yes please join for us it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty because trump [Music] everyone for coming out tonight and those watching at home um appreciate it beautiful day so thanks for uh giving up your evening a little bit so give any we have our director of buildings and grounds dan polloway will update us on capitol projects and our athletic director steve diversity for athletics and activities thank you community members for coming on tonight thank you cea for joining us and we're looking forward to seeing the presentation from our instructional coaches [Music] all right we have one public comment this evening uh john kaneowicz one he said one okay sorry i didn't hear it it's not like you said none yeah you just have to hit the button hit the button on the
mic thank you thank you i am definitely technologically challenged um hello my name is john kenneds i've been a resident of district 301 for 31 years and though now retired i was a public school educator for 39 years it is in regard to two issues that several people in our community have been discussing in public comments here that i would like to address my own comments this evening first critical race theory is not typically taught in public schools and it is not taught here of course we know that crt is really a code word used by those who stand in opposition to teaching about the fact that we haven't overcome racial discrimination in this country and that if we really want to live that professed reality that all persons are created equal we still have
work to do the school code of illinois and the illinois learning standards determine what is taught in our schools regarding race and discrimination teaching black history teaching our students to recognize different racial groups and teaching students how to develop positive relationships with peers of different races are the major instructional requirements of the state of illinois in this regard these are laudable goals that everyone should want our students to learn to translate these requirements into what is taught in the classroom our district uses a curriculum coordinating process that involves teachers and administrators at all levels and at the board committee level parents as well the emphasis in this process is on balance finding an instructional path that does not emphasize any particular political perspective i am extremely impressed at the seriousness with which our district implements
this complex process and i would encourage anyone who really wants to understand how all this works to request a meeting with district personnel so that it can be shared with you certainly instruction regarding race and discrimination is not done with the intention of making anyone feel guilty but black history includes white history and that combined history should not be whitewashed in a multicultural multi-racial society such as ours is important to learn from our past and our present for the benefit of everyone second school boards have historically been relatively immune from partisan politics most who run for school boards want to provide service to the children of their community and thereby to the community at large it is typical that not everyone on a school board is a parent of a child in the district in
which they serve while parents certainly have the most immediate interest public schools serve the larger public good which is not limited solely to the current students and their families we all want good schools in our community and the fact that we all pay significant taxes to support our schools is tangible validation of the larger public good they serve as a long-standing member of this community who had three children receive a quality education here and who believes we have a great school district i believe it would be extremely harmful to our students and our community for the board to become dominated by those who want to push a partisan political agenda thank you for your time thank you thank you move on to action reports now we need motion second to discuss and approve the consent
agenda your revenue and expenditure reports are in your ward packet revenues are currently at 42.53 compared to 48.51 a year ago expenditures are at 49.63 compared to 50.80 a year ago um the district received impact fees for 896.38 with 18 home starts transition fees came in at 9 000 305 and 2 cents the bills payable reports for both northern kane and central are are normal for the month of march thanks to any questions for us all right pam fog yes campfield yes nolan yes yes rabe yes a thief yes gorman yes uh next we have a resolution to dismiss part-time teachers i love to approve the resolution for the dismissal of part-time teachers julia baskin laroya campbell catherine collum christine gatto heckman sandra carreray stephanie henhub hennell and heidi williams at the end of the
0072021-2020 school year a second [Applause] all right there's a resolution in our board packet um this is an annual thing this is an annual process that we go through for all part-time employees by law uh so basically we end up releasing them and many of these positions will be reposted tomorrow to hire back those individuals or individuals that were doing a great job with it so just a normal process any questions uh so this is uh i think maybe the first time uh that i've been a part of that so so could you just give me a little bit more background on like uh like why we do that the illinois school code requires that we release all part-time employees that are certified teachers so it's part of the legal law that they're released and
then we bring them back as part of the resolution so okay thank you but they have to reapply correct they do reapply we post it they reapply and generally speaking we we're ready to go again tomorrow to repost them so we have them ready to go right back out tomorrow it's just a process we go go through for long thank you all right and pill yes nolan yes panera yes rabe yes a thief yes yes gorman yes um i moved to approve the resolution for the dismissal of first second or third year probationary teachers jenna gilardi allison gunther and brian michaels at the end of the 2021-2022 school year second now these uh this is a resolution for dismissal of these employees so these are employees that we are not asking back for next year
uh so they're coming through as we do all first second and third year teachers together in one resolution because they're nine ten-year teachers and they go through a similar process for uh releasing with those three employees we are looking not to retain for next four years any questions and this process is done where they get a letter or form a letter they were notified at the evaluation when they met with their administration we'd not be bringing them back okay they then come forward for a board of approval and they don't get uh sp7 letter which kind of gives them their notification on where they've been what their senior rating is those elements they just don't receive that letter from us and these these decisions to dismiss these first second and third year probation that's based
on performance yes correct exactly [Music] all right nolan yes yes ray yes a thief yes falk yes han pill yes gorman yes next we need a motion second to discuss and approve an optional savings plan that allows members of tier of trs to dedicate a portion of every paycheck to a 457b deferred plan it's all moved second so this resolution you see in front of you is coming from our legal council and talking to them this has been something that's been on the docket for well over a year i did not come forward last year because the teacher retirement system pushed it off as part of their benefit package they're now trying to have it be an a mandatory process that we actually withdraw for a kind of a 403 b through trs it currently
is still in the process but if our legal counsel felt it was important to have this resolution come forward to the board of education if an employee who chose to take this savings plan from trs reached out to us we would have to deduct those payments from their check this resolution allows us to deduct that payment directly from their check we're still waiting there will be opt-out language for new employees that has not been put forward yet we believe that will go into effect for next school year but we haven't gotten clarification yet from trs if that's the case any new employee that would be hired for us we would automatically deduct a certain percentage that trs deems is what the responsibility is unless the employee that was being hired would opt out for our
current employees who are not being hired by us brand new they would have the option to opt in and upon them opting in we would move forward based on having this resolution completed so that's the purpose of the resolution and there's no match it's just straight their contribution their contribution says i think they did it in attempt to tier two tier two has a not as rich of a program as what a tier one trs employee has so it's a way to supplement their income in addition to maybe the 403 b that we offer through the district that's great other questions thanks esther hurst yes rabe yes a thief yes bulk yes and pill yes nolan yes gorman yes next we need a motion in second to approve the annual ihsa membership for the 2022
to 2023 school year so moved second a memo is included in the board packet and athletic director diversity is here if there are any questions okay rabe yes the thief yes bulk yes cam hill yes nolan yes yes gorman yes all right next we need a motion second to discuss and approve the overnight trip for central wrestlers to compete the first annual ihsa girls state wrestling tournament in bloomington illinois so moved second very exciting memo is included in the board packet and athletic director diversity will update you on that state tournament meet um in his his later athletic and activities update the thief yes folk yes cam hill yes nolan yes yes rabe yes gorman yes motion second to discuss and approve delegating authority of grant applications to specific district employees second business manager fluke
the memo is included in your board packet every year this is a new annual thing that we need to just basically read and approve you'll see all of our grants that we have some new grants were added and just updating the director or the department chair that's in charge of writing the grant and approving the assurances award you have both central and northern kings okay folk yes hand pill yes nolan yes yes rabe yes a thief yes gorman yes all right last night we have we need a motion second to discuss and approve the annual agreement with the fox valley vocational cooperative so mama was included in the board pacquiao we currently do not send any of our students to fox valley vocational but i continue to serve on the board of directors work with
the other superintendents enhancing their programs down there looking for various dual credit opportunities if we would decide to sever this agreement i would need to provide notification by january 31st how long has it been since we've had kids there a couple years why would we three years i would say in three years uh i believe that it was this will be our third year this is our third year what's the incentive to keep the existing agreement um continue to look for potential partnerships both to the north and to the south but in talking with dr mongan we're questioning whether it's going to be whether there's a need to continue uh beyond this current agreement and this will be for the 22 23 school year correct yeah this is for going next year you want your
right to give them a notification if we decide to withdraw um would give them january 20. january 31st okay any reason not to continue it well it's just if we're not really partnering and sending students to the program you know at some point i'm i'm providing advice but don't really at some point in the future we ever look to expand partnerships north and south then we would just look to rejoin so you're what are you recommending are you recommending we do or don't i'm recommending that we would renew it and then i would give them notification okay that this would be the final year for participation thank you handful yes nolan yes canara yes rabe yes a thief yes yes gorman yes we want the information items our instructional coaches are here with the presentation
[Music] good evening hello hello i have to go a little lower here sorry maybe not vertically challenged [Laughter] be careful all right i'm gayle stower and this is stacy niemick and reagan excuse me you guys don't get along at all don't spend any time together none at all not at all introduce yourself next time sorry all right so we want to give you a little overview on what um we've done for the year um so just to let you know there are nine of us and we thought we'd um give you a little picture of who they are because obviously we're just two of the nine so left to right we've got vince and rachel and erica kim myself leah stacy dave's in the back and michael has taken a knee there so between us
we're at the high school there's two people dedicated to the high school two from the middle school four of us at the elementary and then dave is more of a special ed um instructional coach and he's definitely from kindergarten early ed all the way through high school um so that's been a great asset it was funny as we were putting this together i'm like how many years has everybody been in education um we came up with over 160 years that um combined that we haven't teaching experience so that was kind of crazy and i didn't bring the bulk of them either just so you know we're tired even though i'm the old one but whatever so um we start our year out with new teacher training this year was a two-day event in august the
fourth and fifth where we had our new teachers come as well as our mentors but what we do is we introduce them to district 301 and obviously were nine buildings but we want our people to know where we are so last spring we went ahead and we did a video um of going between school to school to try and get them ideas the distance that we serve and just give them a little bit of flavor about our different buildings that we have so we went to all the elementaries both middle schools the high school came to the district office so that was really fun so we fast forwarded it to see so they could get a taste of central because it's just not your building that you're hired in it's we are a community we
are a k-12 system and i we strongly believe that everybody is stronger because of how we work together it's not one building alone as each building builds on each other but during that new teacher training we focus on lesson design and one of the pieces this year that we really took a look at was our learning targets understanding what they are and why they're important that our new teachers worked on that to know that they tied right back into our state standards that need to be taught every day and so if you don't have a road map you don't know where you're going it makes your day a little difficult so the learning targets really kind of clear that up we also met with our mentors and our new proteges and went through a canvas
build and we realized that this is just kind of a step in the water to get an idea of how we deliver our online content to our students we also talked about kind of some do's and don'ts a professional responsibility of setting boundaries boundaries and communication with parents and being careful just hand out your cell phone and kind of the do's and don'ts of that and then we wrapped up our sessions with breakout sessions where they got to choose two or three i believe it was between the items there we had engagement strategies they could have taken removing late removing labels excuse me the five w's of differentiation for ell and sped using math in focus tools oda's near pod the 4cs and google slides we video and podcasting so we give them a lot
of information and those breakout sessions they were able to choose what they were interested in in addition um during that program what we do with our mentor protege program not only do we do those first two days but then we meet monthly and we have kind of a theme meeting it might be on [Music] formative assessments it might be on strategies of engagements so each month we have a different theme that we run at the elementary protege and we do it at the middle school high school as well they were given a handbook that's both physical and digital so they kind of had one spot to go to and you can see um we built we again it's the pyramid of with our four elementaries at the base we build from there to go to
the middle school to get to the high school so we're all in this together and that's that's really what we try to make sure people understand how's the engagement from your mentees with our new teachers to the district as far as how they pull on their mentors maybe or utilize them for different expertise oh absolutely um in a mentor um is somebody that they can go to but of course they've got their teammates as well the person across the hallway so very much so thank you very much so um this is kind of a menu and stacy will go into it a little bit later on when we do more of the website but just some things that what we do is we help our teachers plan we can do some co-teaching with them we
help them go through the standards and unpack them so then when they've unpacked them and truly understand the standard then we can go ahead and work on those learning targets and and it's it makes things a little clearer and our goal is to work hand in hand with them not only just our new teachers but all teachers within our district we work with technology that was something that with the canvas and otis and nearpod we help with trainings for that as well and we have coaching cycles so each one of our proteges we require them to do a coaching cycle with us it looks very different from one grade to the other and what that looks like and we really go to the project and say what is it that we can support you in
so not every project is going to get the same thing it's what they need and what they feel would work best for them and then stace is going to talk a little bit about the professional development so every year we review our professional development that we offer our teachers and refine it and look to see what new opportunities we can offer our teachers and i think the pandemic showed us that what we thought was once impossible is now possible and so we wanted to try and capture that momentum for some of our professional development one of our pd's that we started last year and are currently offering is something called a spark box it's sort of like the subscription boxes to fab fit fun that you see on that that people can buy and this
year we did change it a little bit each quarter teachers can sign up for a spark box and the first spark box we did sel skills we did a second one on an instructional strategy called hexagonal thinking a third one on background knowledge placemats and then this fourth quarter we just asked for registrations and that one is going to be a formative assessment strategy the interesting thing with the spark box we kind of have repeat customers because once they do it they really like it because they're getting something that is immediate and tangible and that they can use in the in the classroom we have had 43 registrations for spark boxes with 19 completions the other thing that i really like about the spark box is that it involves the teachers inviting an instructional coach
into the classroom to work with them on that strategy and then to observe the strategy and provide feedback so there's a really nice reflection activity that takes place with that pd and your pjs was our new one this year and um of course um being us we came to esther with um 28 different sessions we wanted to offer and she said slow your roll so we ended up with this as our um as our catalog for this year and pd or pjs is exactly what it would um suggest that teachers can be at home in their pajamas and we log on using a google meet link and provide an hour of pd for our teachers we have had success with this this year it is challenging for a lot of our teachers who have young
children or who are coaching to be able to participate in pd that happens after school and so this is a great opportunity for them to do that and you can kind of take a look and see at some of the different sessions we've offered we just have one more left called reflective practices for the teacher rocket readers was our first ever book study and again delivered through a google meet at night and this was actually led by kim paulus she read this book and really felt that it would be such a great topic for our teachers to participate in i helped her with it and was at the evening sessions there were five evening sessions coach led we had a total of 96 registrations for this book talk and we had 42 completions and on
average we had 15 to 17 participants per session i believe this book was our mentor protege gift last year at the end of the year and so we kind of wanted to continue that discussion and then we still have our online pd i think this was the first pd that the instructional coaching group actually offered for the district uh we continue to refine it we've gotten a little bit smarter about how we can handle all of this and so this year we are only offering four classes first semester and then four different ones second semester and then we will have offerings for the summer as well uh 74 registration so far this year and making questions count is a required course for all our new teachers um i it says 19 completions but i think
that might be a little bit more by now so our pd program evaluation this year has really stepped up um lindsey sharp our 612 curriculum coordinator and shane burkmeyer our ec 5 coordinator are actually doing a really robust job at tracking how we are aligning our professional standards to find gaps in what we are offering to teachers um and so we're really doing a better job this year of continuing to track those participants and then to see where those gaps are so that we can try to fill those in and offer those things for our teachers and then we always survey the staff at the end of the year to see where where they are and i believe that survey is going out this week sometime and then we just threw in a few little
blurbs about what teachers say because we always ask them for for feedback so we wanted to include that now gail is on okay so based on the participation i should say the completion is that what you expected because obviously we're seeing that there's a lot of people that are yeah um yes i think that completion is actually probably higher than what i would have expected the online pd is more robust and it is on their own it's you know on demand professional development and those courses are anywhere from three to five hours and so that does take them a little bit longer to you know pluck through but um i would say i am overall happy with the results we are getting um right now so professional development is mandatory correct for teachers to take
um yes for re-certification for their um licensure not in district right so none of the pd that we offer is mandatory except we we make our new teachers take one online course the new teacher so were you anticipating more people yes in fact we just sent out the spark box quarter four um sign up and it's it's a pretty long list voluntary there's definitely an interest yeah so that is what gives me um you know hope and wants me to continue to pursue different avenues to meet teachers needs yeah sure yeah and like do you use the survey information to come up with the topics for you that's kind of how we came up with pd and your pjs this year because there were some areas that we weren't hitting and if we were hitting
they were at times that might not have been conducive for all of our teachers so for example otis and byoc um which is now embark is our curriculum builder platform and then otis is our assessment platform well not all teachers might have been available after school for help because they're coaching or need to get home to see um you know to attend to children and so we thought let's give it a shot and try to offer something from you know seven to eight hour and um the people who have taken those um pd or pj uh courses have actually really liked and have given us positive feedback and then what it does is that gives us the opportunity to go into the classroom to take it further so it's just sometimes to really take another
run at it look at it and then have that more one-on-one because they're pretty in-depth you're not gonna know everything about it in one hour so this just gives that opportunity to grow that so r.o.e stole our idea for spark box and she does one too now let's just say it so i had mentioned that we do a website um and a newsletter so this is just examples the one on the left of the gray is our newsletter so they've been going out about a month every other month type of thing so it's just a variety of information pd upcoming pd [Music] tips and things about otis that might be about near pod so various ideas we let the new the newbies uh do it that's right yeah that's right and then the coaching hub
is our website so we've had a website um we had one together we broke it apart high school middle school had one separate from elementary but then we would see a lot of repeats so um i know you guys all get a lot of emails we get a lot of emails too and it's like where did i find that where is that information so that's this is trying to pull everything together like a one-stop shop is basically the idea behind um the uh website so they're they're they're pretty inventive and and really pleasant to look at i think so yeah notice that it's all matchy-matchy well and it's rocket blue so that would be the important thing yeah and that's good all right um in addition to um things that we do here we do
um have an opportunity to be presenters outside and represent central um in various different conferences several of us presented at the rsac which is the raising student achievement it was held in [Music] schaumburg okay we've also done ideacon we presented at king county institute west aurora had us in we did power of you illinois education technology conference down in springfield mike and i and leah and kim have presented there for three or four years mike usually does illinois state and then lee and i presented up in wisconsin at a google conference for midwest summit so not only do we go to these and learn information but many times when we go then it's a free conference that we go to to find information so but very much do we represent central um as well and
then this is just kind of like a mashup of different pd and activities that have gone on in the classroom so just to show that we're out and about and do many many different things with our students as well as our adults this represents this year as you can imagine if you look at over time they've done things for students as well they use dumb days sometimes they had a stem activity for a couple days a couple years ago before covert had they were part of foundation presentation for some of the stem activities of students last year before summer they are definitely the extension of curriculum and assessment for the district that goes out into the buildings to make sure that we're moving the needle and continue to support our teachers um in the field
and so they definitely do a great job for district 301 and worth their their weight in gold so we appreciate all that they do so definitely a huge advantage for us here in the district because what number of year is this because it started this is eight yeah so vince and i and mike um started eight years ago and stace came seven and we've added from that so but one of the things i want to add is not only do um you know this is a great program but what we get to see is instructional coaches that our teachers are doing that are so phenomenal that we can go from one school especially i can speak to the elementary you know we're in all four buildings our elementary coaches we're not housed in one building
because i come from one building and see this great idea and i'm able to take it to another building and say hey we've seen this and so our teachers are sharing and it's just i'm blown away with what our teachers are doing are doing the wonderful things are that are happening especially in the environment that we've lived in the last two years so shout out to them because this is um we get to do this stuff for them but they are really um really doing a great job so thank you for giving us that opportunity content seems good thank you thank you thank you right next we're going to recognize our illinois state scholars so um this year we had 49 state scholars out of 302 seniors they represent the top ten percent of all
high school illinois high school seniors um and in their junior they were either in the top one half of their high school class or um they scored above the 95th percentile on the s.a.t so i think that's something that great achievement on their part many of them many of these students are not only achieving academically but also active and activities and athletics as well and some of these some of these students you'll see probably come forward again um related to the wise team and math competitions and things like that that we typically see around april april and may so congratulations to them all right next we have an enrollment update uh the enrollment update is from march 15th and it shows where we're at as a district and it shows that we're up 343 students
from this point last year okay then next year's schedule 22-23 so i gave you a little um just a copy of options so you can look at a schedule um at your seat a couple reasons we really want to go here one of the things we continue to hear from teaching staff is they need time they need time together time to collaborate time to to work at the high school that's really difficult uh with their current schedule current schedule they get in at 7 o'clock 7 15 students arrive and then they're mixed up in between classes doing their sectioning or planning and don't always have that time to really collaborate we did have the early release time that we gave them at the board approved several years ago that allowed them time once a week
on museum monday or tuesday depending on when the first day of school was the challenge was that we have students in the commons area there's a lot of kids that are left behind as we're waiting for the buses to come and it's just become problematic uh it's really not a safe environment some fights have broke out this year we just from the administration standpoint it would be much more beneficial for them to be able to work with teachers they really can't get to them because they're trying to man that group of students that have to stay behind while they're waiting for busing so early release wasn't working so as we were talking and trying to figure out a way to accommodate what our teachers really needed and not to try to lose too much for
our students kind of that win-win situation we're able to develop a schedule that allows our teachers to have a common plan in the morning so when they would come in the morning they'd come in at seven around 7 10 they'd go to plan plan for about 40 minutes it still gives me another about 10 minutes or so as students are coming to get to their classroom the plan time is their plan time but my guess is as they begin to work with their partner in english one or whatever course they're working with there could be some collaboration there um as teachers have needed so that provides that time for them to do that the other thing that we laid in was academic advisory and in the memo you'll see that's in there i said second
period that second period for our teaching staff first period for our students so pure students would start about 45 minutes later that also matches the research that's out there regarding high school students trying to start a little bit later uh they wouldn't come to school until 7 45 almost 8 o'clock which is better for them than what they've been doing i'm sorry eight o'clock instead of uh 7 15. so much better for them to start if they had incentive study hall they could choose to stay home and start even 45 minutes later so almost you know much later start for them to come in at that 8 52 time what i've got laid out here is for you to see four different samples you see a student one sample this would be a student that
would take academic advice for his first period and then they would have of one two three four five six classes which is one less than they currently have so currently our students have seven courses to select from we're proposing that we go down to six courses but have the choice to take a seventh we believe the win-win is a our teachers get more time our students get a little bit of choice so students can either choose to a if they have the incentive to sleep in b leave early because we'll have a a at the end of the day so they could leave early students could choose to take an additional course and not an aaa so they could pick up their seventh course not take an academic advisory at all so that would be
an option for them or students could choose just to take the six courses and then also take that academic advisory especially if it was a need for the students to get additional support in curriculum council today one of the teachers at the high school spoke about the advantages of academic advisory for some of those students who maybe need assistance it provided her time to work directly with that student they could be scheduled into that academic advisory those are the students that our counselors counselors would make sure had aa the ones that maybe are struggling all the time to support them i know dr nolan has talked many times about pushing kids too hard maybe taking too many ap courses trying to find that balance i think here for students that maybe are struggling in a
social emotional context or other contexts where they just need to take not such a heavy load this provides that opportunity too our students who do work based learning could marry up that end-of-day academic advisory to be out for work based learning in our programs that we do regionally like our automotives our welding our veterinary science we do uh one two two which is one period for the first introductory course they take and then two periods for each of the next two level courses so it does it would either allow them to take six periods seventh period for work based learning and stay out for academic advisory for additional work based learning opportunities uh so it does provide a lot more flexibility students that travel to ecc a big advantage for them as well because it
would provide them a travel time because the academic advisor at the end try to schedule either the beginning of the day or the end of the day so some advantages to our teaching staff any questions specific to this if you look at the schedules you can kind of see how we're laying some people in getting an academic advisory in six sections some are getting seven sections you also see the teacher one sample where you see that plan at the beginning and the teacher to it plan at the beginning so you can kind of see where that rolls up and then throughout the course of the day they have their other plan to make up for their 90 minutes of flying time from a counselor's standpoint do we have any ability to not even have it
handily but say hey we're seeing x amount of struggle whatever that means if that's a gpa if that's the most recent gpa that says we're going to require an academic advisory yeah i think they have some students currently that are marked for would be required for academic advising outside of an iep which i know sometimes obviously so outside of that kind of requirement or part of that plan okay yeah we have a list of students who are definitely struggling academically this year uh maybe our target for graduation those students we definitely would require an academic advisory for those students to try to get them to make up the difference to get them graduated in that scenario you're saying that those students would drop down from seven classes to six classes and um okay um so
in this scenario though like um if a student wants to take uh six academic classes and pe is mandatory um then then they wouldn't they would lose the benefit of the academic advisory correct pe is mandatory unless they're a junior senior in a sporting event and or in a marching band uh which they could receive uh exception you know that exemption from pe so i spoke to one of the counselors about this and uh he wasn't clear about um what's how that would work um which would work the exemption exemption we do that now so right so he wasn't clear about it right so i want i would like to understand it um if if a student plays uh football you know like uh is he exempted from pe for just that football season or
for the year not for the year for the semester this semester because remember semester courses right right but then what would you do with basketball and wrestling they could go both semesters i think it would depend on that would be a choice by the counselor the student the parents there'd be a conversation i think it depends on when it's running but basketball usually doesn't start till i mean it's like november-ish right it's getting close to a second i would say it's probably second semester more so than probably first semester my guess is that's what the flexibility if you do basketball then you could probably either take it off first semester or second semester so it's it's it's a it's a it's a decision that the student parents and counselor would make i would have to
ask the high school but my gut would say that would be accurate because you're kind of sitting in between there and i don't know i i would have to ask her administration softball one softball they let him do second semester they think on the fact they're gonna make the team but that was second so that was the second semester sport this is a mid year but you still my point was you don't know that you're going to make it right that's why you take the same leap of faith in the fall they do get the pig and you get one for sports if you do two sports you could use both semesters presumably if you wanted to remember yeah by school illinois school code you can only be exempted for athletics they've narrowed it and
banned okay so now uh marching band oh i i'm sorry and then the other thing was um uh i was told that um if you're exempted from pe that you have to add a class to that as opposed to it and because that that's you know for my my vote if it's up for a vote today that's really important because the way it was explained to me was that if and i'll just tell you for example in my kids like they take seven classes p included and their ap classes i like the academic advisory because you know they're very bright kids but they still benefit from aaa if but they're also athletes so if they are exempted from pe but then just saddled with another class then it takes away from the whole point of
you know being exempted from p i mean if they're going to take another class then from my perspective go ahead and take pe it's it's a nice way to wind down if so i'm asking the question is that required that the pe be replaced with with an academic course no so as long as they're taking six courses um they can take seven if no academic six courses with academic if they have the exemption they do not have to take pe they could take another course in place as long as they have six courses got it got it okay thank you but they need to have six courses yes that that part yeah that's the menu that's the magic number okay sounds good what's busing look like busting is the same as everything so basically uh
currently we run three routes in the morning we run the high school then we go back and pick up middle school and then elementary um in the afternoon we were at high school middle school together so high school middle school run together because they come the same time middle school starts at 8 12. high school would start at eight o'clock so eliminate one time to shift them so we eliminate one route in the morning we actually eliminate one route so we're consolidating middle school and high school at the end of the day correct now is there an additional late bus or early bus no we're not looking at any early at this time earlier because we really want teachers to have that plan time to be able to do what they need to do or
collaborate if they so desire lunch is it always that lunch is this way but those two lunches split up throughout here very simple this is not the real schedule this was just showing you a sample so i made it really easy for you to see lunch is not stagnant yeah it's still cold it will be a lunch though at 9 46. there will be a lunch early i think it's it might be 9 46 it's those are lunch but it might be ten ish so yeah it's always an early election i moved it called breakfast [Laughter] it's brunch see their mimosas other questions thanks for letting this out this is what you it obviously uh obviously information are we gonna vote on this we are not looking for voteless you're gonna say it doesn't uh
it's really just information for you so you understand what we're doing next year in case there was questions that we need to take back this is the other piece yes this is actionable the credits requirements i'm sorry graduation the graduate crimes will come forward they're going to be moved to 20.5 that would be informational coming back next year or next month sorry to be voting yes 20 we're going from 23.5 to 20.5 how does that compare with the surrounding areas it depends some districts have more saint charles has more uh we have two districts that are similar to crystal lake in geneva both have 20.5 the reality is our students are generally going to do more than that anyway um i think that we just want to make sure that we can get our kids
the best education we can get them make sure they're successful uh we're six at four it's 24 hours so it's there's plenty of space for students to get way beyond that it's just that it's we're not making mandatory and it makes it easier for some of our students who are struggling through high school or having some other elements of you know hospitalizations which we're seeing on the rise some of those challenges for some of our youth to help them families to help them uh manage in a more productive way to get them to get a high school diploma how does this change uh enroll well not enrollment but class selection for next year so like eighth graders they've made their selections already they've made their selections counselors are meeting with all of them to let
them know that they're going from seven to six which would they like as their first choice uh we'll still try to do first second choice trying to get them the choice they want freshmen and sophomores are pretty locked in anyway they don't have a lot of movement based on the mandatory courses they have to take really a lot more choices come at the 11th and 12th grade level but each counselor is meeting with each of those students to re-talk through those options so it's the council going over to the middle school yep i think they are going back over the middle school so if they have seven now they can maintain that organ and not be asking that question so at the next board meeting they'll be uh something to actually vote on in terms
of changing the graduation requirements and so i um to think about this okay thank you all right next we have an athletics and activities update all right it's kind of lengthy because i'm going to cover quite a bit so it's all good stuff so i'm sure i won't lose anybody along the way last time i was here we were kind of getting ready for the postseason of winner and we'll we'll kick things off with girls basketball uh they finish the season with you know with a record of 23 10 and 10. it doesn't sound like i mean it's a great record but with the 10 losses but all those were 4a powerhouse and a lot of them all went downstate they did win the regional kind of some other girls basketball accolades becca karani was
all all area honorable mention for the daily herald northwest herald riley duvall was all-conference all all area honorable mention for the daily herald of northwest herald and then taylor charles our princeton uh commit one player of the year for the king county chronicle and the northwest herald she was also first team all-state for the illinois basketball coaches association second team all-state for the ap and finally she was all-conference fox valley all area daily herald as well so as you can see a lot of accolades for girls basketball and we're going to just keep that rolling right in the boys it was a great season uh heartbreak loss in the sectional championship lost by two but you know it was just one of those we missed you know some free throws down the row and you
know it's hard to come back from those but we had the ball with less than four seconds left and took the final shot it was either tie win or you know we lose but they broke the school record again with 31 wins which is phenomenal uh another sweet 16 finish loss to saint francis by two they were regional champs conference champs back to back has they have not lost a conference game for two years so that that's a big feat um all conference all five starters received all conference accolades gavin sarvis drew sharnowski zach schmidt carson seiler and nick carpenter um then daley harold all area players gavin sarvis zach schmidt carson seiler and then nick carpenter and drew sharonowski got honorable mention and then gavin was our northwest player of the year and then
coach porto got northwest herald coach of the year so this was the first time we really got recognized by the northwest herald because they always told us we don't service your area and i push back with how many people get printed newspapers anymore it's all online and if you want to read the articles you got to buy the subscriptions look at your numbers and then all of a sudden we started getting the accolades because last year you know we should have had the players of the year coaches of the year but we were told we weren't recognized so but that's a great for boys and girls basketball um as as usual girls basketball have a little bit of reloading but we got a lot of girls with experience coming back boys basketball uh we're going
to lose some good talent but we're all we're reloading our lower levels were great um exciting and you know just just the venue at south elgin i mean they sold out i think there's like 50 tickets left to sell i mean it was packed a great environment for that boys boys wrestling we kind of covered some of that but there are some new things that i got from coach gouveia as we know nathan kim finished in the top eight at the state tournament was one match away from bringing home a medal top six he was also fox valley all-conference wrestler and was nominated to the all area team doug phillips austin lee sammy winstrom qualified for the iwcoa frost off state tournament all three had some great matches but came up short nathan kim saif
of thief have been nominated by the iwcoa academic all-state wrestling team and this qualification for the nomination is any upperclassmen who received a varsity letter and has a 3.7 gpa or higher those boys don't know they're going to find out tomorrow at awards so if they're not watching it'd still be a secret [Laughter] all right girls wrestling you guys approved the trip uh it was it was a great event it was piggybacked with team duels i'm not sure it's going to stay in that format but the way they're talking they're going to try to they want to make sure that the girls get what they need and it's not overshadowed but i mean our two girls soraya and tori went down and tori ended up finishing fourth place and she was also selected and i
wrestled this past weekend i believe yes for team illinois all-star team duels and they beat indiana 54-12 and she won her match torrey was also nominated to the all area team and soraya was honorable mention and these two girls are freshmen and most of the girls down state were all juniors and seniors so they did a great job and you know the sky's the limit you know for them as well all right so that kind of wraps up our winner now we're kicking off spring you know feels like spring until it rains the next three days but it's what it is it feels spring boys and girls track has been going now since mid-january we we've made it through our flurry of indoor meets we've hosted five of them here and they're bigger than ever
but uh starting with boys track uh they won indoor conference beating huntley again and uh there's nothing better than than that yusuf begg won the 1600 the 3200 zack schmidt won the 400 meter and set and set the indoor school record as well grayson burton won the pole vault and our boys track team is currently ranked fourth in the state by the mile split illinois so they have uh you know high hopes as well they got about one more week and then indoor state down at wesleyan and then they'll transition to outside girls track is in a rebuild year and i kind of laugh because i say vince rebuild they just finished fourth over this past weekend with 16 teams and like neuqua valley was there i mean some big horses and we still finished
fourth so i'm like rebuild come on so but they're doing a lot of things we finished uh third third or fourth in the indoor conference meet as well and so they're getting ready to transition you know for indoor state and then outside as well so baseball softball baseball was playing today their first game south elgin we were up 2-0 when we left to come over to the board meeting so not sure how they finished out softball hasn't played yet and soccer played naperville central and they got two division one girls and they lost six zero but it's you know we play anybody and go anywhere it's we play better so then that way we get into conference it's it helps us out so all right that's it for athletics moving into the fine arts so
math contest so we have four state qualifiers trying to read all this without butchering names but shabbat shah play part of the third place algebra one team in the fox valley competition ninth at the ictm regional so he qualified for algebra one in layman's term that's the easiest way jackson whipperfurth part of the third place algebra one team for the fox valley competition eighth at the ictm regional for algebra one young woo cho did not place in the fox valley competition but took ninth in the ictm regional and qualified for algebra ii daniel de la cruz didn't place at the fox valley competition but finished ninth at the ictm regional for pre-clouk so those are our four math contest state qualifiers their test is either the 29th or 30th they don't go anywhere it's going
to be done at school so their coach palmeter is working with the kids which works better for them and how we're going to set up that environment for them our aces or wise team update we knew they got through regionals uh is doing great again we just won the sectional and the whole team will compete online the first week of april for state so in april we'll get all of those accolades from there as well so those are our two our our scholastic bowl team they won the regional and they did not place for sectionals but another great year you know for them as well um the play i'm not sure if people made it out to see the adams family but that was of recent it ran march 10th through the 13th they were
excited to have their second production this year in front of live audience the audiences were great they're fortunate enough to have an extremely talented cast and crew and from what i'm hearing i talked to mr strike today hampshire and huntley both are doing the adams family and we've had people that have gone to the other ones and we've heard ours is by far way better so they they've kind of well they've kind of kept it more on they struggled with using more artificial sounds where we actually had the kids that you know could sound like lurch and you know some of the other characters where they had to impose that in and our sets they said was just phenomenal so kudos to them what's coming up for for concerts we we have our may week
stretch you know may 3rd we got our wind ensemble and win symphony may 4th we got our chorus and corral may 5th is jazz band and then we're throwing in another night because we have the drama club and we have such great talent we're on may 6th it's a friday we're doing a theater night so kind of like an improv let's you know give him one last hurrah and then monday we're gonna finish it off with our most spirited group in our percussion concert and they're fun um i know the kids love the state send-offs just because the percussion and the drummers love being a part of that too um the last the last club that has some big things coming up and they're not the only one but things that i know will affect
the community are our service club i know they just finished their great uh feed my starving children on last friday when we you know the kids were off we had 51 volunteers which included students parents teachers and staff and great turnout i know mr thief was there and then they're having their second annual color run coming up on may 14th it's only a mile so anybody of any condition could come and walk you could walk you can run you can it's just a fun thing that we have going on we actually have a baseball game we did last year we'll have another one this year it just happens to be that saturday um so don't worry all the powder washes off so it's and all the proceeds are going to go to the national alliance
for mental illness in honor of mental awareness month and then basically the five colors they picked red is for drug addiction and dare yellow suicide green for eating disorders blue for depression and pink for anxiety and i really i know uh mrs zagorski and the kids are going to promote this more but i figure this is the largest public venue to promote it we want to get as many community people as we can come in i know last year when we ran it we did it through copen and succeeded but we kind of had a limit starts and everything else and now that we're kind of more back to normal it's like we want to get all of central involved and like we said it's a mile everybody can make it so that's all i
have any questions yeah i have a question um about the wise aces uh competition that's a team um is that uh like a team that uh students have to try out for or is that a team that um how does that work so mrs stoner is our she's like our coach sponsor for that and i know she works with math and science and they try to take the best of the best but it also comes down to who's available you know because these kids you know doing other things outside because some of the tests are on saturdays yeah and they may have to work so i know they try to keep a very large group same thing with our math team because i know for the one regional they were struggling with are we you
know who can come who's got to work and try to fit all the different pieces but they try to take the best of the best to compete so okay at all okay and then uh my other question slightly self-interested what is this iwcoa al illinois wrestling i know i know what it stands for but you said something about uh like you're on the all-academic team i didn't know about it until coach covea told me this afternoon oh okay so this is something new and he's like he goes they don't even know yet okay but my guess is they're not listening to the board meeting yeah i know myself he goes so it's safe to say so yeah he's going to he's going to present it tomorrow at the awards and give a little bit more
background to it thank you so much don't say don't go home and say anything i'm not going to be a surprise lots of good things going on yeah and i think i think spring's going to be great and it's gonna be action-packed there's only seven weeks of school following spring break 35 baseball 35 softball and like i said we're halfway done with track beats because we do more indoor than outdoor hosting wise but i mean our facility was great we get kudos like last saturday we had 16 girls teams here and if anybody walked in they're like this is insane it's the most organized chaos but our first field events are 8 30 we were done by 2 o'clock so it's very efficient you know how we run things and you know all the other
ones are 14 teams so it you know we're well oiled machine and we want to do more so thank you thank you thank you right next we have a capital projects update i think next month it's always kind of like a big letdown i try to make it um so yep we're cranking along um our first summer projects of the year are going to start spring break just because that's what we do in the construction world start as soon as we can so spring break week the pk and ct cafeteria expansions are going to start so we've got some construction fencing been working with our construction management company and the building principles get those construction areas fenced in start doing concrete get masonry up and try to get those exteriors up and going so then
we can just knock out walls and finish the interiors when summer gets out contractors were very happy to get that opportunity to start because obviously everybody's busy in the summer even though the earlier you know last day of school so those will be starting spring break a couple other things we'll have some still have a few bids that'll be coming in the pv parking lot expansion the ct entrance drive and the lilly lake generator are still projects that we're working on with our architect to get those out to bid and we hope to get that done in april the transportation and buildings and grounds building we're still working on design for that and that'll be another project that'll be going out to bid the paving and earth work and underground work for that project um
that probably will be after april that'll probably be more like may but that's a project we'll work in towards the end of the summer and that's back on the central campus and away from school and everything so we could work on that in the next school year some of the other things that we'll have going this summer we'll do a lot of our typical hallway bathroom school painting wide paint hallways getting things cleaned up floor tile replacement carpet replacement we'll be looking at a remodeling project here at the district office on the daycare side of the building we'll be doing some seal coating and crack filling on a lot of our paving areas that we've paved over the last couple years we'll start getting those seal coated and crack filled try to get that pavement
to last and then some parking lot repairs at pkms we kind of have pushed off that parking lot for a couple years we're still probably another year or two away from a replacement there but we'll get some repairs done down there and kind of get that cleaned up and then i think we're in good shape as far as our parking lots and then along with all of our usual summer cleaning and all the other fun stuff in the summer any questions i know the mobiles are done but um i don't know if you know lily lake has like still cones and a little fence yeah so we so the final punch list will be done over uh spring break um we have to still have some skirting and some odds and ends of stuff to
do and then we have a lot of asphalt repair a lot of that around yeah around the mobile and then alongside the building we had to go through the asphalt to get the electric and and data and stuff to the building so that'll all be taken care of same with country trails the sites are kind of rough in those two areas just because they were on grass and you know where they were at so that'll all be remediated over the summer you know grass planted and you know site repaved and cleaned up and by next school year it'll be in really good shape any other questions thank you thank you thank you that wraps up open session in motion second to adjourn the executive yes rabe yes a thief yes bulk yes and pill yes
gorman yes like a five to seven minute break
