001let's call tonight's meeting to order uh pam can you take roll call brown yeah johnson here kellenberger nolan here here rave here gorman here we need a motion and second to approve tonight's agenda second brown yes johnson yes nolan yes yes rabe yes gorman yes well thanks everybody watching who uh tuned in to get a little update about our in-person learning that'll be very shortly we have no public comment this evening so we'll move on to action items need a motion and a second to approve an updated school calendar second so for the board's consideration i've brought forth two draft calendars uh to make adjustments so i'll be providing the rationale for for this as i give the back to school update but we are planning on to move forward with bringing back students on
002april 5th therefore um in consideration we think it would be wise to take one of the teacher institute days from the end of the year in june and move it to this friday friday the 26th of march so that teachers have a chance to prepare for the influx of additional students on april 5th then that would change the last day of student attendance uh to tuesday june 8th and then the last teacher work day would be wednesday june 9th so the two options that i have in front of you the the only difference is that with draft one uh monday the seventh and tuesday the eighth are full days of student attendance and on draft two uh monday the seventh and tuesday the eighth are half days for student attendance for the boards of discussion
003so i brought this up to todd last week just given that next year our last two days are half days last two days next year's calendar that we approved correct correct right and so like we had talked about with the two orphan days last week in the board meeting um and just that just based on where finals are likely to be our eighth graders seniors all that stuff and just for the teachers as well to cut down on their um you know giving them extra planning time end of year stuff getting grades together for two half days um i thought that it was a reasonable thing to to suggest so curious other people's thoughts i think we've lost so much it seems crazy but on the flip side they're not going to do anything those
004two days but not learning new content maybe is a way to put that so certainly however bring that up to me that yeah we're not going to learn new content they could review they can play games and learn not that there's not learning going on but new content i would assume at all levels is is not gonna be going on todd with this revision when would do we know when finals would be scheduled for at the high school level finals would already be concluded at the high school on the fridays like are they right we have high school we have senior graduation on the 27th of may seniors don't make up emergency days though seniors last day is likely set so they would never be part of emergency we would have finals before that no
005they usually whenever my kids were in it the finals just went up to the end of the school year finals don't happen before they just get moved along with the days that's how it used to be it's about so i don't think what happens is the seniors end up not making up those two emergencies or if they need to take finals based on grades well their finals so when my daughter did it they came and had to take either they were given the final early or they came in and took finals when the rest of the class took finals um but the regular final schedule just moved with the extended days which i i wish i would agree with but i don't think that i don't think the vast majority of students are going to
006be receiving finals for seniors for seniors that's that's fair but the rest of the students so when would freshman sophomores and juniors take finals basically the last three days so that again that's what i'm saying that can be adjusted though i mean the high school schedule that that's not insurmountable right but usually it always ended up like when my daughter had snow days their finals was always the last three days which it's always the last three days personally these are i look at these as emergency days like any other year where we've had snow days and we just tack on a full day i wouldn't treat it any different than what we've done in the past because that's how we've always handled emergency days and then in the future if we have emergency days they
007would be full days of school and the only reason i brought it up is because next year we have half days already so this is we already made that decision for next year this yeah and that was to maximize the some of the end-of-year activities and things that had to be ramped up even on the staff end so the question then next year if you were to do emergency days with those half days then would get extended they would all extend it still end with two days of course you'd insert all full days and you would just end with the two they would be extended out yeah you'd have to fully you're not gonna have four half days at the end of the day that's that's the only reason that i even thought of that
008just because we already had an approved operation i think one concern that the board at least has to consider and i don't know to what extent that would affect but well child care issues related to those those days that's something to at least consider i personally feel like it's been such a crazy year and we've kids have missed so much already i would like to extend that those two full days you know for a lot of purposes i get eric you brought that up and i would say if it was a regular year i would say sure um to give that time to a lot that time but this year has been so crazy i would just love to see them in school those two full days this year personally yeah i kind of agree
009with that yeah my kids aren't going to like me but i agree so is there a consensus then to move forward with draft one amongst the board then yes yes i think you'll want to do a formal yeah just the motion someone will want to amend the motion make the motion to approve draft one of the calendar yeah that way the the high school exams the finals could be that monday tuesday or friday monday tuesday otherwise because if they were the previous they already have days anyway the second third and fourth what's the point of if your finals are done yeah teachers are planning collaboration dr mangan said last meeting so that was the whole point of this coming friday and personally i'm not too keen on the idea i voiced my you know my
010opinion before but i thought it'd be great if the union or some teachers could share how they collaborate with this the next born meeting and show us the positives to it um some parents might be interested too on what they did um with their great levels you know meetings that they're gonna do on friday but you know i don't know if uh i thought president chapman might be here but maybe he could share or anybody else just an idea i can follow up with our team on that so i mean i guess for the for friday knowing that a lot of their sip days and other days are a little more structured just given what we've talked about i'm guessing this will be a highly unstructured day from the administration level so will admins just
011kind of be checking in with the different teams to see what their goals are at the building level they will because we're now working um and i'll give that update later on with the return to school but we're going to be working diligently at the end of this week next week uh with staging staging areas and classrooms and stuff so administration will be out and about throughout the building yeah even if they you know one or two of them came to so very good all right so we need to amount the motion to go uh you know motion a second to approve draft one of the schools yes brown yes johnson yes nolan no gorman yes all right informational items uh full in-person learning update so first of all i'd like to thank all of
012our um parents who participated in in the survey last week to assist us in our planning uh to return the full in-person instruction on april 5th for whoever wanted that so the survey closed on on friday of last week we did have 54 families that chose to go from currently in person to remote and we had 217 families who chose to return from remote to in-person instruction we're pleased to share that we're able to bring back all students who wish to attend school in person on a full-time basis right so that's that's something i think that's really impressive and we've worked hard to accomplish that so uh based on this on the survey results in our return we're looking for a return for five days a week in person at the elementary level and the
013school day will be from 9 10 to 3 35 in four days a week monday tuesday thursday friday in person at the middle school and high school level leaving our wednesdays under the current schedule where we have a synchronous instruction in the morning asynchronous student instruction in the afternoon which still allows those teachers to be time to collaborate develop their lessons for the integrated instructional approach that we use with simultaneous learning that takes place at those levels um in looking at our data there there there were four grade levels uh two at howard b thomas and two at country trails and out of those four grade levels we have uh 15 students and we will be reaching out to those families tomorrow um we will we will be able to accommodate those 15 families for
014in-person instruction uh but they would need to attend at a different school for the remainder of the year and provide transportation so they can choose to either stay remote or they could choose to provide go to a different school provide transportation in some cases with these families we're able to keep one sibling at the home school and not the other so those families would be given the choice to either stay remote keep one sibling at the home school and put another different one or move both siblings to a different school so we're gonna try to give them some flexibility and choice to the greatest extent possible um our busing created some challenges and we're fortunate to have um well over 200 families reach out and say look if you need help to make this plan
015work we'll help with transportation so looking at the preliminary data today we have 79 bus routes we have currently seven of those buses are over the 50-person capacity so first of all i think we've done a great job when you're thinking 79 got 79 routes and only seven are over the 50 capacity director porto and the transportation department is going to continue to work and see if we can bring that down even a little bit more and then after that we'll be contacting some families of those affected routes to see if they can assist us with transportation so um the board did revise the calendar and that that information will be going out tonight um that said there was a calendar revision we'll send out the updated calendar to families tomorrow uh staff and families
016will receive an email from me a little bit later this evening outlining some of the changes and some of the things i'm sharing with the board right now including what our instructional model will be looking like um so we're pleased with that one of the other areas that that brought us um some challenge is how do you coordinate feeding these students throughout the day with six foot social distancing and again the administrative team um and their and the food service staff really stepped up um lunches will begin at howard b thomas at country trails and at prairie view at 11 40 a.m and they will conclude at 1 20 and 1 20 p.m at lilly lake lunches will begin at 11 10 and they'll conclude at 1 10. at pkms lunches will begin at 9
01751 and they'll conclude at 12 12. and you have to remember that those students at the middle schools and the high schools they begin their school day earlier so then it's cms uh lunches begin at 10 30 and conclude last appeared to be 11 20 and then at chs just because of its size they begin at 9 45 and they conclude at noon principals were also able to work out schedules for their buildings that they'll be sharing with their staff at the elementary level that provide recess time both in the morning and in the afternoon for a mass break so that the students can go outside socially distant six feet and have that break period so those are some of the highlights of the plan are there other questions the board has at this time
018oh i know something that's very important that was very important to parents as well students that are are currently remote will maintain their same remote teacher students that are currently in person will maintain their current teacher of course students transferring from remote to in person will have we'll have some changes but we were able to keep keep that that was important to families and we were able to hold on to that for them firstly good great job to everybody for that huge juggling act amazing amazing um can you clarify the purpose of wednesdays again for me please so at the at the high school level and to a certain degree at the at the middle school level we have simultaneous instruction that takes place so at the same time that the teachers are teaching their
019students in person they're teaching their remote students at the same time and that brought in some extra planning and collaboration issues so we put that in place for for those levels after the school year next looking at to afford to next year is that going to continue or is it no um so our current plan in you know things can change but our current plan for next school year is to have a full return of students in the fall and the only remote sections would be due to uh documented medical exemptions okay good thank you have you had any pushback on the question transportation people actually providing or no parents have actually been very supportive and we're still trying to work we're still trying to work through to maybe even get the seven buses maybe
020down to six or down to five okay but we we've had um an outpouring of support from our community to try to make this plan work so then the next step would be um after transportation takes one more look at it reaching out to those families on those affected buses that said they'd be willing to drive to help bring those numbers down and just just so just to clarify for for everybody but um students making the change from sort of in person to remote and then remotely in person this is a one-time deal right this is we're done now for to the end of the year okay okay so i mean unless there's something in the circle that's why we we had to take a heart stance that the survey actually closed at noon on
021friday because uh we have to there was a lot of work that had to go into this and this is the the decision that was made um through the survey or through not making change then you stayed put will be in effect through the end of the school year and we're not we're not loosening any of the the um arrangements for people having to wear masks for the cleanliness in the buildings and all the other all the other items that are currently in place with the exception of three feet right so we're going to continue to do proper sanitation and disinfection on a daily basis for all of our building facilities um we're able to maintain the six foot social distancing when students are eating it's important to realize that that families need to continue
022to be diligent about the self-certification process because if if someone comes to school and they're symptomatic and now you have students within that radius there could be a greater number of students that have to be quarantined so it's going to be really important that if someone's exhibiting symptoms that they do not come to school that day another piece of information that was just shared with us today officially by king county health department is that the quarantine period for for individuals is being lowered from 14 days to 10 days as long as the individual remains asymptomatic throughout the entire 10 days and that would not require a test then it's just the tendency that does that require testing and there's no way to shorten that with any sort of testing correct just want to be sure
023yeah because the cdc would allow for a shortened time period with testing king county health department has not adopted that guide in line but they did reduce from 14 days to 10 days as long as the individual remains asymptomatic on a daily basis for that time period and as always that's 10 days from the day of exposure date of exposure find out about it correct and that's that applies whether you're vaccinated or not or not correct well if you're fully vaccinated if you're fully vaccinated you don't have to quarantine after exposure so let me let you know if sometimes yeah if you're fully vaccinated you're gonna have to quarantine after so we're talking about our teachers who would be potentially exposed to a student or university or other students well you know if there's a
024student who if there's a student who tests positive right yeah then you're gonna have to have other students quarantined and right my point is we don't have students who are vaccinated yet so it really just correct for that vaccination purpose is really protecting teachers yeah from the need to quarantine theoretically excellent correct do we have we do have any feedback at all and they definitely never asked this last time but how what percentage of the of the the teaching staff have been vaccinated um we know that the majority of our staff has been vectored but we do not have official numbers because uh we're not requiring people to disclose that yeah that information there's been a good take-up generally you think [Music] yeah and the information that will be sent out to staff and families
025later tonight with more to follow from their school and the transportation department great brown yes johnson yes nolan yes yes gorman yes fabulous thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you for all your work hard yeah it's amazing well i wish i could take credit for it but it's a team you know everyone
