001here here need a motion a second to approve tonight's agenda yep yes yes please join us in the Pledge of Allegiance for which it stands one nation like to recognize any visitors register thank you for coming out tonight I see many of our staff their presence tonight thank you for being here many of our administration some of our community leaders Mary members thank you for being here I also would like to recognize mrs. Sofia Mills who is on our personnel report for eel director and grant coordinator Sophia could stand up so thank you as I understand it the living skills is no longer part of our curriculum and middle school I haven't really looked into it but I heard from one of our younger sons for eighth graders that he said that he wished that
002they still had that in school you know support learning cooking and so it's very basic stuff but he thought it sounded good I did learn how to cook as a kid I did have ho MEK all through middle school I'm not a chef by any means but I can prepare things and I think there's a whole generation that is not learning that and I mean I'm guilty as anybody of buying kraft mac and cheese in a box and using a lot of convenience foods but the fact is that that is the least healthy stuff for us and if we learn how to cook and prepare foods from scratch with fresh vegetables and things you know buy the components and make meals it takes a lot of time and we don't have time especially with both
003parents working but I think the exposure to those skills is a big benefit for our kids that you know we we keep telling them eat healthy you know do this do this the right way but then we're not giving them the skills that they need and it's harder for them to get them at home when we're so busy at home all the time so you know I try to teach my boy I have four sons so I don't have anybody that's really excited about cooking and washing dishes and that's but you know that it's the whole thing it's the buying the food learning how to prepare it cooking it cleaning it up it's not easy it's a lot of work it's a lot of time but you know there's so much benefit to that for
004our families and I think for our community our families are just really important and the healthier families are the healthier community is overall so I would really like to just put that out there for future classes you know my boys are gonna be in high school next year but I don't think it's too late for our kids to to learn those things or to maybe put it back into the curriculum even like the the sewing just exposure to a sewing machine or you know the older boys made a pillow and things like that just threading a needle things that they they might not learn at home like they used to so it's my two cents for the night thank you thank you we need a motion a second to discuss him the revenue expenditure summary
005reports are in your board packet revenues are at forty four point seven six percent compared to forty seven point forty one percent a year ago expenditures are at sixty one point seven five percent compared to sixty two point twenty four percent a year ago this month we received two impact fees April's came in at seventy nine thousand one oh nine 7422 new home starts May's came in for twenty seven thousand one one nine eighty four four four new home starts bills payable report is normal for the month of May nothing out of the ordinary there and then we did get our first early tax payment for next year's expenditures so in May we start to get a little bit of our tax revenue June will get another payment but we did get our first little
006payment there our total school tax rate decreased eight cents it went from six seventy eight to six seventy and that's what we projected so it's still coming down King County school districts we're discussing the topic around a county school facilities tax is the one percent tax as a County thing great benefits to school districts if it ever got passed but realistically it's not probably going to pass so conversations been put to bed and we're not going to discuss it for now just there's too many other things going on we would be the first caller County to get it to go through agreed and then the newest the biggest things in our world part of SB 690 there's a property tax freeze legislation it passed the sentence went to the house they're proposing that in beginning
007in 2022 if the state of Illinois fulfills its obligations to fund the and contribute 350 I think it's we 350 million dollars to the evidence-based funding then they're going to put this property tax increase so if this property tax freeze went in huge very devastating for us and most of our surrounding school districts there was a survey that had that went out to that I projected out the first year yes yes yes the motion of second order to discuss and approve the textbooks for algebra 1 & 2 that department review materials from many companies the Glencoe series so the memo is in your board packet last month we talked about it you reviewed the textbooks they've been on display for 30 days so any questions for me relevant to l1 and l2 textbook yes yes
008yes motion and second require discussed and approved textbooks for the veterinary science one and two Elsevier's veterinary assisting textbook provides the naps of guidelines for gaining the information necessary to pass the urban area system certification exam in this memo was in your board packet last month regarding the veterinary science as well as you saw the textbook and it's been unjust wait for 30 days any questions regarding the textbook actually this will cover us for a projected growth six years well food you grow so we got 360 electronic licenses we only have about 120 in there and we can use those licenses as we go through right and a huge discount to get the licenses so that's why we learnt and purchase those 75% reduction so we figured it's best to buy them now and then
009extend them as we use them yes yes motion and second are needed to discuss and improve the fuel bill districts three vendors petrol choice is our current provider was Louis second so mama was included in the word packet along with the fueled vid summary to recap we've actually worked with each of these companies that put in for a bid and petrol choices our current supplier is president Worman mentioned and they came in with the lowest bid yes yes yes motion and second are needed to discuss and approve disposal services for the district flood brothers was the lowest response for a two-year contract so again there's a memo and the bid summary and the board packet we were surprised that her current supplier group did not bid I was also very surprised by the numbers that
010came in from flood brothers they do business around her area including pinger Grove their bid came in lower than what our current contract is so I was happy yes yes yes yes motion second required to discuss and approve the company supplies just natural gas and requested proposals from six vendors were received by responses so Vanguard's our current supplier and they're making a recommendation in the constellation energy for next two years second so everything exactly what Jeff just said there's six different vendors they're the same six that usually give me some prices five of them came back one of them couldn't because she was it was already better than through somebody else so they wouldn't compete that way constellation we did have them before they do other school districts surrounding us they are they also do
011the part of the IEC which is a consortium people that are getting paid so it's kind of cutting out the IEC and that's what we had last time that got locked into a three-year Auto renewal and not so positive stuff happening so but they did come in with really the cheapest price and they had a credit just for switching to them for forty to four thousand two hundred ninety dollars so our recommendation yes yes yes yes motion and second recorder to discuss and improve the general trade bids trade trades bid work high school capital projects so a memo from the construction company search amazement proof shows with not including word packet along with the summary of word recommendations and then a breakdown of the bid tabulations behind every action item coming up director Paulo is
012president we have questions regarding scope a bid in the word but this is for the renovation of the original wing of the first floor adding two of the CTE labs at the end and then that brings to a conclusion any questions for Dan there's no change from what we discussed last meeting a month ago okay I'm sorry yes motion second or need to discuss and approve the aluminum and glazing associated with high school second we had to responsible bidders and it's recommended that the bid be rewarded to reliant contract glass big mushrooms on that same question all these bids as we go through them everything is unchanged yes yes get a her grave builders package at the acoustical tile in with their bed so it was a better price yes yes motion secretary needed to
013discuss and approve the flooring associated with my school in this case we had three responsible bidders we're pleased to announce that vortex came in as the lowest responsible bidder for Texas the company that we've worked with both on the phase one and phase two addition so they kind of know our site and got a good price on yes yes motion second required to discuss and crew the painting associated with high school projects and we had three bidders kept singing we had a second we had three bidders for the painting on new drove a painting out of rural a motion second are needed to discuss and improve the plumbing work associated with high school second again we had three responsible plumbing bids come in Joe borough plumbing out of Elgin was responsible yes yes yes that's
014motion of the second needed to discuss and improve the HVAC work second we had six mechanical contractors bid for the HVAC work one source of mechanical was the last responsible yes yes yes last one second I need to discuss and improve the electrical work in this case we had four electrical contractors been to work this is a company who I do not believe we worked with in the past but they have a good reputation Swedberg yes all right need a motion second to discuss an approve you overnight trip for those central football team to go to Knox College from July 31st you know if it's an annual trip No yes yes yes a second are needed to discuss and approve overnight trip for those high school cheer team to attend a summer camp at Carthage
015College second yes yes all right emotion seconder needed to discuss and approve the overnight trip for the Central High School girls track qualifiers HSA state competition so moved even though the the meet has already occurred I did notify the board the sectionals were just the week before and so there wasn't a board meeting in between when they qualified and when they went so notified the board of the trip and they're asking for official approval tonight yes yes yes another one happen we were told about the motion in a second to approve so moved yes all right a motion and second or equator discussing approve the revisions to the middle school we just added today the emotion and second to improve Boise State tracking overnight trip we went to Charleston Illinois so in this the boys
016track team members qualified for the state tournament this weekend how we receive the moment today so the yes no yes yes now I needed motion in a second to discuss the middle school I do have one question yes yeah my daughter's tall two hours she gets it from clothes I buy a whole maybe for my children so the irony is we have track clothes that don't meet that right so they can't I mean honestly we can't wear track shorts at school and I'm assuming during the school day I mean I think even back in the day 20 years ago I think it was basically kind of like people like hold their shoulders up right I mean that's what I think what I known into my point being I think there was something that you know
017teachers is still at the high school teachers would still kind of call you out in a wardrobe or whatever you call it you know a dress code and it was something along those lines like you couldn't even be much I mean you could be about like anything and now this seems to me even less restrictive than what I recall I wasn't amount of situation so I mean I think the lack of subjectivity is probably important because you would get exactly that one person thanks out somebody else got it because thank you yes yes yes now we also need a motion in a second to discuss in a food aversions to the high school second we have assistant principal Terry Stroh with us to answer any questions the board may have thanks : yes yes yes
018motion and second I needed to discuss an approve the renewal dreaming there's details in your in your packet they've always there whenever I have a question they provide exceptional service to us they do rotate their auditors every they went to a five-year but I think they're back to a three-year so they rotate their honours within there so I think this is the last year for the current Auditor but yes their motion second I need to discuss and approve numerous veterinary science affiliation agreements second so this is similar to last month we just have additional affiliation agreements coming forward month by month as amber is out working so this month we have four coming forward for you to look for this is to get us a hundred hours we need for our clinicals for next year
019for the program so the one memo covers the various ones there's four of them Carol Stream Animal Hospital and then Dundee Neil Godwin site but they should be separate motions motion a second to approve the affiliation yes second to yes yes yes the motion a second to approve the affiliation agreement between northern King County region 110 and Spring Hill veterinary clinic yes yes and finally a motion second to prove the intergovernmental agreement between section 301 the county of chaos second so this agreement has come about its but our work in the making ever since sheriff Kane was elected and some recent events not only some of the events of curtain schools and other places across their country but most recently there was an event that occurred at Batavia High School where the school was put
020in a lockdown situation they thought there was a student with a rifle end up being a student with a baseball bat and the backpack coming to do hitting practice and because of the agreements that being in place they had a hard time like looking at the footage and rectifying the situation we're with this agreement in place for emergency situations emergency calls law enforcement would then have a live feed access to our video cameras and would in the event of another type of emergency like what occurred at Batavia would be able to look at the footage determine if there was a viable they can do it remotely we worked with the words legal counsel to provide this memorandum this agreement and do we do we find out if they access the feed for some reason do
021we have to grant authority remotely do they determine that unilaterally no they would have to would have to be for a viable emergency like when students are now when students are present they have to notify super attentive to notify administration you know a reasonable time frame size they're not just going to go in and hey I'm not sure what's going on I think I'm gonna go and look at video baggage they cannot do that has to be tied to an actual emergency or an actual threat when students are not present in the building like in the evenings late in the evenings if if there's like a central alarm that goes off like in a corridor and a patrol car was in the area then based on that without students present they could access a feed
022just to see if they're seeing anyone their computer exactly and then an emergency situation they would have access to our radio frequencies you know for communications and then be able to see things are going on live and then we would also allow them when students are in that present to be able to use the video for their training like on-site training we had today the we discussed course two courses being dropped one of them being tech engineering and the other being to consolidate new courses that we that were approved tonight or today during the meeting was transition to stem which Alex peel came in today and explained to us that the state had deemed that students were leaving high school not just ours but in the state I'm not ready in college so they made
023this a fourth year math course instead of them taking college algebra or a trig class so it's basically gonna be required by law next school starting next year and the other new course at the high school beef video production - it's basically taking what they're doing in the video production one but taking it to the next level of editing the there will be a subcommittee from CCC it's the P gap committee so there's going to be something sent around looking for people who want to be part of that committee they will meet approximately three times next school year for one hour apiece so there will be a survey for people who may want to participate in that and then the last thing was keyboarding since it's been going on all year so we've heard from
024all the elementary or review HPT and Lily Lake so we talked bicycle way out there's jungle junior that's pre review the kindergartners did their hbt and like they basically had really good things to say about typing Club versus take to learn they've been using although there's some glitches in there they said that's more gamey and the kids are engaged so it looks like they're gonna go ahead and continue with that as of right now we left the meeting saying the free version is gonna kind of go through K through two but there's gonna be a paid version for three through fifth grade that the teachers can track more of where their needs may be in things like that as of right now but we're still looking at that the other thing I just want to
025clarify is on Laura kind of raise your eyebrow so transitional stum the math class is part of that post-secondary workforce readiness Act that we talked about the PWR and that's the requirement for students who are not performing at the level we would think they are they meet me aren't we ready it's a different way to instruct them it takes a place of most students when going to college algebra and trig these kids would still take college ultimate treatment in a different format that's done through a transitional stem AG peel who's our department chair has been working directly with LG Community College teachers as well as the other three districts that feed into ECC to write the curriculum have common assessments across the region you'll see that there's actually an intergovernmental agreement we're gonna have you
026guys look at for information tonight so that you can see the intergovernmental agreement and the requirements by law that are required to offer this course and there's many requirements as to what students actually are targeted to go into that course so college outspend sure it's still here yes kind of does the senior year math class that we had gone with about five or six years ago at the high school this will be replacing this senior man like the most part much higher rigor like that Senor Mac its higher than that so they're anticipating that they can go in and not have to take any remedial coursework so as long as they get a 70% or higher they automatically go into a college bearing course no you just have to have a 70% or higher Annie
027Annie do any junior college and some NIU has accepted in other four universities are jumping on board yes they take it without a test they're automatically guaranteed yes so we held our final deal team meeting on May 6th and we received feedback from various buildings on a learning days so under the under one of the the state laws is that in our calculator build in five emergency days if however an emergency day would have to be used an e-learning day could count for that student attendance and I have to make it up at the end of the year it's only allowed for those five emergency days and the overwhelming feedback is that step one take advantage of those elearning days and that would be working out procedures on how that would occur including paper packets
028for families that may not have access to the electronics so exactly how that will look how that will be flushed out we'll have to come back and at a future meeting but this meeting we received the feedback instead but this is something they would like then our instructional coaches prepared a canvas course our campuses are very management system and it's of course for teachers to gain skills in social emotional development dealing with students who have anxiety or similar issues we've had quite a few teachers go and look at it we've had some teachers complete a couple of the modules the initial feedback from teachers is there's a shared warrant for ideas and then there's like a library of resources that are out there that are grade level and age appropriate and that'll continue to be
029tweaked one of the things we discussed earlier around the year we had a Dan Peterson with the nurtured heart approach come and present to the district leadership team dan is out of Naperville and we have some of our teachers who have experienced over his workshops Gillian LaChance key and Xander McGuire the high school are very passionate about this we're looking at putting together like a train-the-trainer model for step that are interested in in this to add to your repertoire of skills and then we had members step down and there was the deal t me see epcr final EPC meeting of the year was held on May 15 and we had our emergency responders from Elgin PD from Kent County Sheriff's Department in the Burlington Fire Department were all present along with our administrators that make
030up the team and principal Rebecca Jersey chairs the committee we we were able to look at our district safety guidelines to make sure that they align with the FEMA protocols which they do we are waiting for a few room numbers for a couple of the schools and we're adding a few minor typos but if the plant is ready to go and we're ready to report to the Regional Office of Education every summer we have to report out to the regional office of education that were in compliance with all our safety drills we reviewed our protocols which we have we also talked about currently we have a reciprocal reporting agreement with the King County Sheriff's Department but we do not have a reciprocal trade agreement with the elgin police department so that's something that we're going
031to need to work on and explore and then at that time we were just working and consulting with the attorney and the inter governmental agreement that we believe would offer safeguards for both our emergency responders for visitors or students and her staff collecting protecting student privacy in the case of an emergency and the board just approved that we are looking at lunching in the fall we want to get the feedback from our new SEL coordinator but some type of a tip line or some way to report if there are certain issues how do we go about doing so it'll be something that we're going to be working on so we did not have her last meeting we still have one more but may was spent so the foundation has agreed to be an incubator Board
032of Directors which means the money that we would raise and donate back into the incubator through our school the new curriculum that just started this year will be acting as the governing body for their judging pitch night so we had our first successful pitch meeting last Wednesday Marguerite she came as a guest judge and when she was but I know she I talked to Mitch afterwards and she talked with the judges and felt that the projects that our students brought to the table were far exceeded what she'd seen in other districts for their first year for their first year just in general yeah so she's used to seeing much smaller vision where our students had they did that pretty large vision products whether you thought you know it's they were looking at a large section
033of population that could benefit from them so the students did a great job very impressive I don't know how many of us in high school could have done what they did so we did a war to two of the groups did win a grant seed money to start their business it was chameleon containers containers elk and elk they will be going on to the course next year which allows them to use that seed money to start their business so the second year they'll be charged with starting their business getting everything laid out so I know we as a foundation look forward to further to finding how this works for us is helping them grow in their projects and then can't wait to see what next year's class brings it was really cool anybody if you
034didn't go see it I highly recommend going for the evening in there was an open house before to see what all the projects were and then the top four including the model makers including the mold maker was part of that too so it was what our high school students are doing is pretty impressive so high the country trails thank us tonight one of the first things that I wanted to highlight was the most important that country trails was that our administrative team was new and we inherited some of the processes that were already there and we have found that over the past several years they have had site and risings to our school improvement team as one committee to kind of give you a little bit of an explanation on what that means is that
035the site team kind of looks at procedural things when we're gonna have our classroom party we're gonna have things like that kind of and then very early on when we I asked for a represent representative from each grade level and when they came one of our first meetings was more of a get to know each other so I kind of asked them why did you volunteer to be part of school improvement team what did you what made you passionate about improving country trails and as an admin team we actually had a PD very early in the year with a StrengthsFinder Lipo came and talked to the entire admin group and so then I got a chance to reflect and share some of my leadership traits with the team so that they had a better idea
036of working with me only a month what kind of educational leader I will and so that was how we started the year kind of getting our conversations rolling with some of our school improvement agendas if I want could highlight a few of the goals that we had we had an e l goal for English learners we wanted a growth in our imagine learning software that the classroom teachers use that they have we have had Kate hood is in in the building she was the Yale coordinator for the district this past year has several years and she had discussed with us and that had been brought to the team that the more that the teachers are using that in the classroom the more successful students are and raising their scores and hopefully graduating from the program
037so we kind of set out and had conversations staff wide to increase that usage and if you can see highlighted in your brochure that we went from having 30 percent of the classroom teachers utilizing it weekly 480 minutes or more in second quarter all the way up to 60% in quarter four and we exited 14 students from our deal very successful with those with that kind of conversation communication goal we had to maintain we wanted to maintain the website have current events curriculum corners also something we sent to he newsletters out on the 15th on the last of every month and one of those is more of just what's coming up important dates and some fires and the other one highlights a message from the principal different areas what's going on in the classrooms normally
038have pitchers or any events that are tied with the community for that upcoming time and so we have been very active we have a Twitter that we try to get to you where well we have an achievement goal we wanted we actually had a discussion I can highlight an example of 3rd grade math so I our is the new PARCC testing and we were talking about the students being exposed to questions that they don't necessarily if we don't ever expose it to them throughout the school year when they go to take this one standardized test they don't know how to answer that question they're not very successful and that seems kind of crazy to have the end-all-be-all beyond one standardized test and they're not being shown examples of or had opportunities to discuss and have
039questions about it and so we as a whole SIPP team one of our meetings we brought in a just a couple questions practice assessment items and looked at it and that really had the conversation so the teachers were like holy cow we have to go backwards and talk to our students and show and get that discussion up now we won't see if the benefits of that are if there were until we get those results next year but we're hoping as a team we definitely set a focus on having conversations with on that another one that we in English language arts goal was the use of extensive vocabulary for reading and writing and to develop an instructional vocabulary common vocabulary if you will one of the other things this is supposed to be interdisciplinary so how
040it started was a multi month process was as a SIF team we decided we wanted there were several vocabulary words that the students they could transcend all content areas but that they should know and we thought we should develop a common list k5 and build upon it so our kindergarteners are only asked to know two words and then first grade they get two new words so they'd have four and so on and so forth right now it would be twelve we then went to the whole staff and had a working staff meeting with outside of the SIP team and said could you as a grade level team identify some words that you think are important for your grade level and they put it all down on paper we collected that data and then the fifteen
041re met and and put some together some examples of this are all listed in your brochure you can see that for kindergarten they think the word sharing is very important obviously to learn and then as you get into some of these upper grades they're like fourths talking about citing and evidence and fifth with evaluated expression these are just examples our school psych put together a fantastic resource talking about prefixes and suffixes and if they learn these it was about forty roots of those they could be exposed to a hundred thousand words so this conversation and country trails is far from over what we are trying to this is the in its infancy this is where we started with that social-emotional though this was important as well dr. sternal I already talked about nurtured heart my
042first-grade teacher that is on the school improvement team is also on the DLT team with us and we had some fantastic conversations throughout the year about some of the social emotional needs of our students and talking as a team we really have noticed that our students need to show some more perseverance and grit trying to find ways for them to deal with adversity several things we've been having conversations with teachers on how to have those conversations about it's okay to fail failure is one of the greatest tools of teaching we developed a bulletin board in a common area in our school that is a perseverance bulletin board talking about it's okay if I gave it my best and it wasn't it's still we put it forth our best effort and that it's gonna be okay
043and continue to have those conversations if you flip it over the back this is not necessarily tied to a goal but something that I wanted to highlight is a success of our building I feel that we are very connected to the community have a lot of community engagement several events our PTO has something about once a month there's an argument to be made that that might be too much but that's neither here nor there today but one of the ones that I really do want to highlight is our Family Literacy night when I first was hired for the job and I got a chance to build those first relationships with my teachers I asked in the building level what is one thing that is an untouchable for country trails and they said Family Literacy night
044that's I know I'll be all here it's we're the most proud and that they showed me how big country trails can do it we had three tractors and hay rides and we transform the gym into an enchanted forest we had 30 staff members do it in about an hour you wouldn't believe what how fast they transform some of the rooms and we had over 600 people walk through the doors that night 400 students so 600 and some students 400 came we tracked by giving our little penance to the students who came every student who came got one and it was just over 400 actual students with their families little siblings got stickers or suckers and any questions alright thank you much thank you they say how every time a school improvement plan so principal Gerard
045already here guys better bring is not quite there with DC but we're close HPD staff members will continue to implement a PBIS light program with fidelity or actively teach and recognize behavioral expectations so this was a major goal area for hbt and for our staff to identify expected and unexpected behaviors especially during non instructional time such as assemblies and lunch and recess so the HVT character committee has taken the initiative to ensure that all staff members had Twister tickets to pass out plan monthly school-wide incentives and shared a video that the staff created of expected and unexpected behaviors and that was done at our beginning of the year assembly so students can earn Twister tickets from any staff member by demonstrating these behaviors and representing the hbt care code there are school-wide incentives and rewards
046such as lunch with the principal we have doughnuts coming up soon reward assemblies like where mr. Gerrard and I got to eat a bug that was exciting and and other ones like chalk and bubbles outside games outside things like that classrooms are also encouraged to utilize classroom incentives to promote expected behaviors at the end of the year awards assembly this year we'll be recognizing one overall terrific twister for class and this is something new this year and we're looking forward to recognizing those students that will be nominated by their teacher or their peers social worker will continue to utilize the character education lessons with second step and a variety of other resources with students teachers will also use second step curriculum to support the social emotional needs of their students so this year we focused
047on lunch and recess expectations and this will continue to be a target area for next school year as well and we have ongoing communication with families regarding bullying prevention expected behaviors at HB T and social-emotional support next up we have our ela or Language Arts goal which was this for this year for hbt staff members will work to increase the number of students meaning expected growth targets on state and local assessments so what you have in your brochure is kind of a drill down version of those goals we wanted to hit the nuts and bolts of our conversations that we had with our Rising Star team so those include for ela students will read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently students will write arguments to support claims in an analysis of
048different topics or texts across the create curriculum and here comes the three most important words citing text evidence we hear this over and over with our Park now ia our and our map assessments this is something our students need to be need to know how to do using valid reasoning and relevant insufficient evidence we also we're going to have a renewed focus on differentiation not only for I one of the things I feel like would you pretty well at hbt is hitting our students with interventions for tier 2 and for tier 3 but how are we enriching and extending so you'll hear that as a theme as we move towards in math and and also with the LA to make sure we're offering those opportunities and know that our teachers have the the tools and
049the skill set to be able to do that also as we move through the RTI process and move into MTS s we need to be driven by student data so that has been done in the past through map aimsweb dll but as we move forward with fast bridge and other tools we want to make sure that all of us have the professional development and the knowledge to be able to utilize those and our data will always be utilized to determine tier 2 and tier 3 interventions for our students moving on to our math goal very similar sounding our math goal is for our HP staff members HPT staff members will work to increase the number students meeting expected growth targets on state and local assessments these include so math a little bit different here that
050we want to continue to solve math rooms with complexity increasing at each of each grade level we want our students to be able to provide examples and also be able to defend non examples so what that means we need them to be able to share if a problem isn't correct what were the errors are the steps of why it's not correct and to be able to defend that as early as kindergarten and it's very very neat to watch we also when it comes to math a reoccurring theme that you'll hear from experts is our students need to be able to share how they solve the problem in pictures numbers and words sometimes as Grady mentioned our students don't quite have the math vocabulary especially sometimes our elo learners with they might not understand what a
051rhombus means so we need to one build that vocabulary in but to make sure that they know that they have those three options at their arsenal to be able to solve the problem pictures numbers and words and then of course with math also using continuing to focus on differentiation and how that looks differently than it does in ela so as we move towards in ela and Language Arts where many of our teachers feel comfortable over the years using small group instruction we're having a renewed focus on what does that look like in math how does guided math work and how are we again making sure we're meeting the needs of our students who may be struggling but also how are we enriching and we're excited as we move towards a new math resource how that
052will look more about that after us and then also using data and also with math a conversation we're continuing to have with our teachers of HBT is that pre teaching and re teaching component and also pre assessment our fourth and fifth grade teams now for quite a while have been switching students per unit by using pre assessment and so those conversations are really rich and robust of talking about how some students are getting it some students are not and how that looks differently from concept to concept so those are conversations that are occurring frequently and that's really what we want their team meetings to sound and look like and less about the field trip permission slip but getting into those deep conversations about student learning and continuous cycles of improvement and the rest is just
053for math using our resources in our RTI moving to mts with map and Ames web and access moving forward action steps he heard some big things that we wanted to really focus on this year and then Megan will touch on future steps coming up in pre in future years so the first one was we wanted to be as transparent as possible with our own goals so our actual student learning goals as part tied into our evaluation were taking a close look at our students at HB tu who fell at the 35th percentile or lower on the map assessment I've always been fascinating fascinated by that growth Matt's metric of not so much are students who are twenty-fifth percentile and below but how do we catch those kids who are in 25th to the 35th percentile
054sometimes we refer to them as light yellow or light tier two and what can we put in place to help really move and grow them as fast as possible with his little intervention as possible and so that's something that we have we focused on quite a bit we had in our data review meetings our school psychologists Amanda Schmidt I would highlight those students who fell below the 35th percentile we would take a look at what kind of interventions they were receiving who needed more who needed less and who's showing the growth throughout the course of the year as I mentioned earlier our fourth and fifth grade math teams at hbt pre SS they switch students for each math unit so they can focus or instruct a specific math concept at that students individual skill level
055our second and third grade teams this year tried something a little new they came to us they said how about four words their way what if we did a similar approach what if we broke the kids down by their skill that they're working on words their way one that keeps coming up our Latin root words how are we really tackling those and by splitting those students into specific skill level not so much ability but specific skill that they needed to focus on they've really been impressed with the growth they've made and it's been very developmentally appropriate for a second depth and third they were kind of our guinea pigs and we'll see if grade levels if we roll that out to other grade levels next year and then last year is I I'm sorry lastly
056as I mentioned earlier our team meanings and as we move forward with our class grade level of discussions we really want to focus on those four essential questions of a professional learning community what do our students need to know and be able to do how will we know if they learn it how will we respond when some don't and how are we going to extend the learning for those who are already proficient and then I'll turn it over to make it we're moving towards from our current RTI process another change is that fast fridge is replacing math testing and one advantage and questioning technique and lastly well have a continued collaborative conversation with them between teachers and students which will be key to making progress and sustaining a positive school environment and fostering a growth
057mindset and then lastly in conclusion we thought we would share just as mr. Engel mentioned some of our special events we've had out through the course of the year so sorry to Crane your necks but we're going to run through a quick photo story yep and we will be really fast on this so first up we had something unique to hbt is Grandparents Day we had a great turnout in September it was very well lieutenant we only had one grandma stuck in the mud in her car Thank You dr. Noland and dr. stairs it all comes back thank you for helping us and director Paula way for helping us out pennies for pumpkins is a special fundraising event it's unique to our second grade team students decorate pumpkins based upon popular children's stories and then
058they put that money towards a special cause in this case we have a third grade student with cerebral palsy and he has limited mobility and they raised the funds to purchase him a mobility bike and so he rides that bike as part of his Oh teeth throughout the course of the week and through the school day so it was really special for that to come to fruition and for us to have been able to help make a difference in his life and the other part of this was we also raised enough to purchase a wheelchair ramp for their van that make transporting much easier Veterans Day assembly always very well attended a unique thing I know other our other Elementary's have special partnerships with their police and fire department we are very fortunate that we
059have a very very strong relationship with our Burlington Fire Department they love to be involved every year they organized a special fire truck ride with a few students from HBT who exemplify our hbt care code and so that was this past fall we had a fantastic turnout this year for our Girls on the Run program huge shout out to Maggie Smith and to our many hbt staff volunteers this they're run on a rainy day in Chicago we there's some guy I'm not gonna name any names but as I was coming up with the announcements this year I stumbled across the phrase let's go twisters just helps me finish the announcements and so we had some staff members who painted a mural and so we have really enjoyed utilizing that for pictures and our our students
060enjoy looking at it we had some special guest readers this year dr. Sternin reading Polar Express which has been a kindergarten tradition we had a staff member whose brother was a professional actor who showed up as the Grinch one day so we had him read The Grinch we sharing the love with a holiday coffee and treat cart here is the infamous bug eating assembly which we won't go into details but we survived and this is one of our ways throughout the course of the year that we really tried to refocus on our terrific twisters and recognizing their good behavior we had a very special Howard B thomas 100th birthday celebration he would have turned 100 this year we had just about all of his family members join us we had cake we sang happy birthday
061it also coincided with the hundredth day of school so it was a very special celebration and they really responded they were touched by us honoring him there's our hundred day of school and these are what mrs. Moretti shared our monthly twister rewards which changes every month we had a first grade stem day this year this was the first time we've done this here is also our literacy night as mr. Hinkle shared I was so impressed by the decorations all the activities we had a fantastic turnout and look forward to expanding that next year we have several grade levels that partner up to do activities as anybody who knows mrs. Musial knows her love of science and here's some erosion experiments and lastly there's the hbt family and mrs. Moretti and I feel honored to be
062a part of it thank you very much does anyone have any questions all right thank you one thing real quick that I want to say to both of the four principals and assistant principals just because you know bsdl stuff is in particular I think it's really important that you know we work to to model that as well right so that I think CT has a perseverance board or something like that so teachers being okay with saying man I tried XYZ over the weekend I was really frustrated but I couldn't get it I think that the modeling component will be huge which won't be natural for most of your teachers by the way to talk about failures but if that's really the way that you want to go there has to be a push especially with
063our elementary school kids less concern about older than that there really needs to be a push to kind of have to just work on finding something to talk about like that so they can model that behavior and hopefully math series Elementary stack team has been reviewing textbooks over the course of the school year brought in various vendors and through lots of work and study and taking a look at each of those different materials that were presented that the team has would like to move forward with Nansen focus single format just kind of run through some of the key components of math and focus Singapore math which is based on improving both a part of the series they will have the print as well as the digital format so kids will be writing in these working
064it to work as well as that will be as well you can see in the memo that was presented the breakdown of the cost per grade level as well we do have I think it's 350 or 385 in the budget for big textbooks of adoptions like this so we do have this in our budget to take care of it this year yeah it was a vision math and it was Kathy probably memo he did that was like six six years ago five or six years ago was that right after everyday math or no yes yes now envision really focused so they'll be able to print it off or the kids actually can work on the okay in Jeff any engineers so the budget will show our curriculum budget will show run in the textbook line
065in them but we have other dollars within our textbook that will be black in our overall curriculum budget it'll just be read in one line item and then black and the other so if we have dollars that we're just shifting with our own department to make sure we have the dollars to do this that Dena's got money she can help me with one thing that especially the elementary people that we have here you know I think historically especially for my kids like the parent day is during the day which especially if there's a huge curriculum change like this gotta be put at night and I know you're outside so I understand that but like you have a dad three o'clock to meet the teacher especially with this I'm going to talk a little bit about
066the structure of the textbook and why it might be different than what they're used to see it starts off with a problem the teacher is not going jumping directly into this is the concept that we're learning but rather setting the environment so it's inquiry based from the get-go so students get a chance to read through particular problems work together with their peers in the classroom and getting idea the concept then the very next activity will structure pulling their prior knowledge taps into where what knowledge they already have on a concept then it jumps into the engaged try and learn which is the gradual release model where students then have that direct support with the classroom teacher using virtual manipulatives hands-on manipulatives so they're walking through that and then again that gradual release so as they're
067more comfortable with the materials that teacher steps back and so was this even on the table ten years ago or whatever was not when we had envisioned okay that's like we adapted when we first went into common core and teachers really wanted a resource to assist them with the Shinto common core and that's why we purchased in vision it was really the first textbook out that was out there we looked at three or four textbooks and that's when the teachers had selected I think at this point that teaches about grown envision and they're really looking for something that's a little bit more profitable thinking and some components all right director building dollars four dollars with Dana our that the bids that you approved today was the final of our large capital project so that's for
068the high school renovations with the two roofing projects high school renovation along with those we'll be doing all of our other typical other projects painting floor tile all those things we're working on getting all that stuff together but it's going to be another busy summer for our staffs two weeks shorter than a typical summer so we'll have challenges there but now we have calendar for meetings from the this year to June next year on triple-i 24th begins in June so we need to register the triple iComfort still that weekend before Thanksgiving the Thanksgiving holiday but also next year the National School Board Association in April is holding the national conference and the national conferences in Chicago this year so too the word for information is that in June if we would decide that we want
069to again attend a triple a conference like the board normally attends in November that's when the registration would begin but there's also an opportunity if the board members wanted to experience a different type of conference the National School Board Association conference is in Chicago so we're looking for feedback from the board do you want to forego triple-i just do the National Conference they try it out do you want to run on a year where you do both conferences and kind of see how they compare they found it to be meaningful but again it kind of depends on the session so some sessions structured similarly we're similarly with seminars you can choose to go to correct so the structure is right key notes basic summoner's various topics that I another the only benefit a local one
070is kind of partnering with people if we see interesting things and so I think the ease of communication with people is there if we were to come across what a tremendous upset we really enjoyed and I think you know whether we present something let's say this next year about the animal science program starting I do believe that's just I mean a meaningful locally as well so we couldn't try the second one but I thought that if we want to continue with one warrior triple I and also maybe any board members a dress attending national conference and employee kind of them can do a comparison was in Pennsylvania this coming year it's [Laughter] so what is there a significant cost difference to do each so does that mean we should all know how much the national
071one is though it's 11 months away but there should be like prices for that spreadsheet with the couple together we'll send out that information on the board that's fine all right so high school graduation is Wednesday May 29 sexual high school graduation is coming up quickly with the board members that are attending the the event you have packets in front of you thank you to assistant principal McCaslin putting it together with your parking passes your wristbands for entrance but I know dr. Noland your regalia should be coming in this week yeah oh my hug all these kids that I've known since they were five if you split me up thinking they want to hug you back they do it's a lot of presumption I ask permission ahead of time you left I'm asking all these
072parents permission to hug their children put a red dot on you if you want a hug [Laughter] yeah okay I can go around and hug them all but I do have to hug my child all the other ones are just right I do have to hug my daughter though cuz that's the only reason I need to be the ladder that's right I have to be bit towards the back that's what we're saying I know she's on the left we will take care of every snacks on stage you don't know what's underneath my row this time of the school year Kerry lives and breathes high school graduation there is this binder the principal tests Tony turds with his life do you take out a page very good I know you'll take good history textbook adoption so
073we have a new AP we would like to have an option so currently our textbook is the 12th edition and we are currently at the 17th edition so we need to update it really came about while Mike was talking to our instructor for this next year we recognize that we only have 60 textbooks currently in our inventory we have an anomaly group with a much larger group of students who are taking this class so we needed to purchase additional classes i mean additional textbooks with 115 students it's a 1 year i'm requesting at this time Mike Schmidt who's the department chair really believes this might be an anomaly group we don't know if we see a large Bush next year it would come back for additional licenses we are looking for digital licenses and you
074will see why it's a very very heavy book but we do want 30 books for a classroom set and then digital licenses 415 students they like to give out assignments over the summer for any AP courses usually in June we're gonna be in our tight timeline here in terms of being able to do that so they're gonna try to make some adjustments and they're all curriculum and then figure out how they might get some of those materials to them but our recommendation it is eighty-eight thousand eight hundred dollars roughly for this adoption but I think it's necessary these typically sophomore junior typically typically it can be yes it but we have it all the way from we have sophomores and juniors so for that track it's easy sophomores we do we do all digital licenses
075but most teachers like to have at least one textbook in their classroom if they want to work with this we get one class set there's only one teacher so we're asking for 30 hardback books to keep in the classroom but then all the rest are digital licenses do we need that many I mean it's really clear that all 30-plus students are gonna have it look in front of them I think it's their preference at this point so as we're trying to shift this just a teacher's preference is to have one class site usually there's a break once you pop by extended licenses but when I talked to Mike he just felt that this is really an anomaly group so he hated to expend the dollars if we didn't have that many students for the year
076after so we're looking for a one year license usually when it's one year they don't give you a much a break when you go to you six year adoptions that's why you see us do that a lot we get a much better break but we'd also don't want to purchase license we're not going to use an anomaly group we're like let's just hold off for one year purchase what we need and then we look at it if we see the numbers stay there then maybe we would look to go for a six year it writes what it's electronic for one year the licenses are no longer any good right so we'd have to up my anyway we want to see how many students are actually gonna take it to fall here so we talked a
077little bit about the transitional stem math that went to CCC for approval it's an additional class that's required by law it was not required for next year although we decided to go ahead and go with the rest of the district five or nine schools which is u46 district 300 st. Charles and ourselves we've been working with Elgin Community College to get the requirements of what's part of the law and what we have to do and you can see within the agreement the Memorandum of Understanding more than one of the last districts to actually bring it forward we had some issues in terms of what we wanted to share in terms of students records some student record information yet out there we were able to clarify that this really lays out what the expectations for both
078Elgin Community College is what the expectations for central district 301 is what the qualifications first our teacher qualifications are the eligibility requirements for students and so it took all of the law that came out of the post-secondary workforce readiness Act and we made it into the transitional math outline here and the agreement that we've got with LG Community College you can see we did not put in the second class the quantitative literacy statistics we're looking for approval for the transitional stem class as well as we're looking for approval for the technical math that's really going to be instructed out of Fox Valley if at some point we think we need it at this point it's really not relevant to our student body some point it may be it's much more aligned to our career tech
079fields and students that maybe are going into a lower technical field that maybe doesn't require a lot of mathematics for the most part our math department feels that the stem hits most of the students for our population and then we'll discuss the quantitative literacy one which is kind of a step down at a later date but at this point we really don't look to offer that for next year so our enrollment report was taken from May 16th and the change from last month is that we've gained two students a year and our total district enrollment now is four thousand two hundred and ninety two students I think it's interesting to note in comparison at the same point last year we have four thousand one hundred fifty six students so it's we're up a total of
080136 136 students from this point last year and we gained 28 students during the course of the year that number of gaining 28 students over the course of here actually makes me a little bit happy because um that means that we can control a little bit of growth and subdivisions come online and we start seeing the new families coming in throughout the school year then that creates a little a few voices I would receive poor flows between the April board meeting and the main board meeting Tony Malay requested communications invoices and contracts with Blue Point alert solutions smart procure which is a quarterly Froy that we received for purchase orders student advocate Laurie McDevitt question information of percentages of special education students under which other programming and then John lat requested information on charter school
081applications district has received and we were able to respond to all four yes
