003to have to do with them Eagles are coming into this game uh after a pretty good regular season if you told me that we would have gone six and three at the beginning of the year I think I would have understood it but I think I would have had some questions and Jared we talk a little bit about the uh the week nine game that we had last week against Jerseyville Eagles lose it 19-0 get shot out I mean and it's tough because we came off that 385 yard performance out of Dom vaguely and last week only 96 yards rushing 56 passing only 152 yards on that offensive side of the football what are the Eagles gonna have to turn around tonight um I know Murfreesboro is going to have a lot of athletes like
004last week that number 11 Chase with her he had 33 carries for 245 yards so if we can stop the run and force them in like like we've been saying all year I get to stop on first down and just force them into those second and long and third and Longs that that's going to be the biggest thing tonight you look at last week in that first drive of the game game it was a pretty good drive had some things going for us and then all sudden just kind of petered out there in the drive and then we couldn't really get much of anything going after that you look vaguely only nine for 20 passing for 56 yards one interception just really nothing going for the Eagles we were trying to run right run left
005and nowhere to run yeah and it was senior night uh there was a lot going on if you win that game you most likely get a home game and you're hosting a week 10 so it was kind of a heartbreaker but we're still in the playoffs and that's all you can really ask for you look at the defensive side of the ball you already mentioned it a little bit Withrow had himself won great game we knew that he was going to be tough 356 yards for the Panthers who improved to four and five on the year and I say improved because the week before they shut out Civic Memorial 42-nothing and then they come and they put up 19 nothing against us so they finished the year 61 to nothing in their last two games
006but uh 356 yards on the night 282 rushing 74 in the air somebody that we mentioned all the time but we don't really ever talk about them we just talk about all the tackles that Logan Hicks makes but the sophomore he gets the job done yeah and he stepped up ever since Brandon Jackson uh got injured Midway through the season had to miss a couple games um really started playing well we had to play some at Center and then we had him at middle linebacker as well and he's been getting almost eight nine tackles every game so now having Brandon Jackson back um we can move Don vaguely back to safety a little more and if we want we can go three linebackers and bring vaguely up as a linebacker as well so um coach
007Germaine's definitely gonna toy around with that tonight I would I would imagine Hicks leading the way last week 13 tackles Mason Schnabel nine Dom nine Zach Wetzel eight Joe Kish with seven tackles and then the one sec from Brendan White and you look at the year the stats on the defensive side of the ball leading the way is Hicks tackles 70 tackles on the year and a very very quiet kid with those 70 tackles yeah and we don't talk about the line enough too because that line has to set up those linebackers to get those tackles uh Tom canning Steins had a great year um I know Antonis had a great year until he was injured schnabel's been in the backfield all year Carter Hicks as well just opening up Lanes so those linebackers can
008float the ball and get as many uh hats as you can so we talk about the season that the Eagles had we'll just recap it real quick the nine week regular season let's go with uh started off lost against Mascoutah and that was at mascot a game that we knew was in a world of hurt we knew that mosquito was going to be playing well come back week two win it nine nothing to Forfeit against Alton Marquette Roxanna the late victory that we had 28-27 then the Freeburg 24-nothing game and I think right there was a pretty big point in the season whenever you get to that four and one Mark and then you shut out Freeburg is pretty big as well yeah was that Roxanna game was that the one when Dom had that
009punt returned late in the game minute and 28 left yeah that was that was pretty awesome and then having Freeburg anytime you play have Freeburg on your schedule you're always looking to beat them um then we went to Wood River and that was probably the ugliest game we saw all year round I'd say I'd say even uglier than last week um we couldn't get anything going and part of that was they didn't have school that day and we didn't have school today so we'll see uh if that has anything to do with it well the Eagles end up in my book we're conference Champs the Cahokia conference says one tie all tie we tied Breeze but that victory in week eight 28-27 overbreeze with the stop two-point conversion with about three minutes to go that
010put Columbia at 4-1 in the conference Breeze was also four in one so if if we go head to head and Colombia is going to be on top of that Wood River three and two Roxanna three and two Salem one and four and Freeburg Owen five so like we said at the start of the broadcast doesn't matter what you did the last nine weeks week 10 your goal you got to go 1-0 yeah nah I believe if we win win this game I'm not looking ahead but if we win this game I think we would host in week 11 so um that gives the guys a little bit extra motivation um to play one more home game in front of their home fans now did you get to host a playoff game whenever you were

012the zoo for the week 10 matchup and Sam you had your fair share of games in the postseason when you were in the CHS uniform I did I was uh fortunate enough to be a part of a couple teams that had a little bit of success um and had the ability to host a playoff game at home on my senior year so uh these kids are coming out tonight it's week 10 playoff football can't ask for really much of a better atmosphere if you ask me so and it's a great night you know you look at you get that feel of a Saturday game typically when you talk playoffs but tonight we'd elected to go Friday um let's talk a little bit though when the last time you play on a Friday night though it's
013that road to Champaign and it is that champagne game let's go back to the 2007. we talked a little bit you uh you say you remember you're a little bit on the young side but uh talk about those guys who played in that game and what you know about them and still keep in touch with them oh man uh I think I was like five years old in 2007 when we went but it was definitely an experience I'll never forget um a lot of those guys played their butt off that season to get where they were um and champagne's a great atmosphere to play at I just remember it being uh it couldn't have been more than about five degrees there at the time I think I had about three layers on um but yeah

015playoffs there's eight classes of 32 one through 6A gets separated North and South they go 1 through 16 seeds in the north one through 16 in the South seven and eight a typically all those schools are up North so they just go one through 32 up there you look at the teams whenever coach Jermaine we were watching the pregame or the pre-game Pick'em show I guess you would call it we were looking at the five and four teams all five and four teams made it this year one of which was five and three and there's also a four and five team in there wow with 56 playoff points and they were not a conference winner so they just made it wow because they're going I bet they gotta drive about eight hours yeah I wish
016I would uh could remember what the name of that school was but I can't off the top of my head so we'll break it down to the 4A playoffs which is where the Eagles and the Red Devils of Murfreesboro will be in goes from anywhere from 854.5 students to 562 students Chicago Noble is the highest with that 854.5 and Chicago Urban Prep Brownsville County or Co-op rather is the lowest at 562. um currently there is a official shortage is what they go with so nine games will be played tonight on Friday night and seven games on Saturday and you get this feel right here yes it is a playoff game but it kind of feels like a regular season game too with it being played at night yeah I mean I I think whenever I
017played at Herscher Sam right we it was uh that was a Friday night um I think the last Saturday game we had was when when you guys played um but I mean yeah you kind of get the same atmosphere as a regular season game but coming in you have to know that uh this could be the last game of your career for those seniors uh so you got to let it all out there on the field and um just do all you can for your team look at this game when you look at the season for the Eagles in their schedule the five teams that made it in 3A Roxanna will be hosting Hillsboro that is a 8-9 seed and then the 4A um a little bit of thought was going to be that we
018were going to be hosting Coal City if we would have won the game last week unfortunately we did not so East Alton Wood River will be going to Coal City Mountain Zion will be going to number five seeded Breeze Central the 10-seated Bulldogs will go to only tomorrow a 10-7 matchup and then you go up to the 5A bracket where Marion will be going to the seven seeded Mascoutah and Jared we were looking at the 4A bracket what do you know about the top or is there anybody that you do know anything about on who would make their way to Champaign um well not I don't know too much about a lot of those Chicago schools I do know Juliet is usually loaded with a lot of talent and you were talking about that whoever
019wins between them and I think you said Richmond um and uh what would that be the semis we'll probably go to State and win it all so um we'll see uh we'll see what that top half looks like then you go down to the bottom half Carterville and Geneseo Geneseo plays a bigger conference uh talking to a couple of the people here in Murfreesboro they play Carterville said Carterville is a pretty good team but Geneseo they're playing in a five six eight conference so Ian aren't they all the way like way way up yeah they got a five hour trip tomorrow to Carterville two Carterville they play at one o'clock tomorrow then you look uh at Coal City Wood River they play tomorrow at two Rochester the four seeds so if you look at you
020know you break down the bracket here Rochester um they got a way to get to the semi-finals at least we'll say Breeze in Mount Zion that could be an interesting game Breeze very good team but Mount Zion they can sling it yeah and Breeze will have that home game being the five seed so we'll see how that one plays out but I'm I'm betting coach short he's gonna be ready for that one at home then you got Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin which will get the winner of only and Waterloo Waterloo still looking for their first Victory um in the postseason I don't know if they have one at all and then the winner of this game will play the winner of Macomb Quincy Notre Dame and again talking to some people around here they said

022coming in this year 628 students so we're right in the middle of everyone in the 4A bracket and then you look at coach Warner and Coach G 18 times they've been in the postseason now out of their 22 Seasons but let's just call it 21 because that 2020 season there was no postseason we were still 5-1 and this is the 12th time in a row that the Eagles have made the 4A playoffs dating back to 2011. wow that's that that's a real record right there 12 in a row wow the only one I know decline when we played them I think it was 26 times whenever they were doing it so uh you can definitely get in there a bunch into coin they still have a good program whenever you talk about them Colombia three
023teams did not make the playoffs this year Marquette obviously had a down year as Salem did not make it Freeburg starts the year 3-0 and then go oh and six unfortunate for them uh just to start on start out strong and can't make it and then Jerseyville obviously so I guess four teams didn't make it um Jerseyville four and five but they played a tough schedule and played at the end of the year played pretty well looks like uh we got what five and a half they just add a little bit more time here five and a half minutes now uh both teams are about to about to run out right now onto the field before Murfreesboro takes the field they're coming into week 10 their program dates back to 1914. 108 years old 20
024times they've been in the playoffs their playoff record 17-20 they have won second place finish back in 2019 and they had three of their opponents make it into the postseason play they had Benton who is in 3A and I believe it was who else do we have here Carterville is 9-0 they are the number one seed in for a Benton 8-1 the number two and three a and then Harrisburg was five and four in there the 13 seed in 3A Carterville hosts Geneseo which is like we said five hour ride Benton hosts Stanford Olympia should be a win and Harrisburg goes up to Tolono unity in Tolono Unity is a team that's been playing in the state championship for years on yeah and as I'm looking uh at Murfreesboro schedule I had this year I
025remember a couple of those teams that we played back in the day um in the playoffs I see uh West Frankfort uh ducoin like you said earlier I think we played Heron and Carterville that was the most hostile environment that we've ever had to play in so uh We've we've met up with a lot of the same teams um so tonight we're going to face them and see what we can do against Murfreesboro well the Eagles just took the field the fans came across made a tunnel for the players pretty good showing for the Columbia fans here the parents brought a bus down here to Murphy and now as you can hear the Red Devils are about to take the field like we said already once before pretty good atmosphere down here yeah we said
026we wanted we said we wanted to hear a little bit of the game I think we're hearing a lot of it now yeah you look at Murfreesboro will be coming in tonight seven and two four and one in conference play 588 students so they are smaller nuts second place in the southern Illinois River to River conference and put some points up on the scoreboard 41-17 is their average score let's talk a little bit about the players that we're going to mention 2 000 rushing yards form a thousand yards passing they got some playmakers all over the field yeah I think uh Sam was talking to me a little bit too um was that number two number four number four the wide receiver who's gonna be catching a lot of passes um got a lot of
027speed so we're probably gonna have to do a lot with him tonight yeah I just was watching watching him a bunch pre-game um and they got a lot of athletes out on the field a lot of speed so our defense has got to do a pretty good job tonight setting the edge and forcing them back inside so our defense can make a tackle yeah and I mean looking at looking at this whole atmosphere right now I don't think Columbia's played in a game like this all year so they're gonna they're gonna have to come out ready because I mean Murfreesboro looks like they're ready so right off the get-go we get the ball we're gonna have to have a good drive to start off the game and try to get some early points yes sir

032we're gonna go doubles to the left side tight end sniffer back right running back to the left of vaguely and the emotion man likes the motion man Eagles are looking deep down the middle of the field and they're going to stop short it's going to be wike on the catch and it's going to be a first down for the Eagles good job protecting there by the Eagles offensive line they need it all the time in the world for vaguely and he gets it and if you look at that play right there that safety was cheating all the way over towards this side if vaguely could put his feet down and maybe uh slinging across the field it's a dangerous throw but it might have been there yeah and coming in I mean if you watch

037making the tackle going to be good for five light flag in a late late flag after the play officials getting together talking about it now and it's like do you like him throwing that ball there third and two um I don't know if I really like the match up there yeah I think Abernathy's got some size on Wetzel see if I can figure out which piece of paper to look at for that uh what do you got for Abernathy's size it says six foot 160. wow he looked bigger than that to Wetzel penalty is going to be a personal foul on the Red Devils so it's gonna be a 15 yard penalty pushes them back to the 50. there's just some extra blocking after the play out of bounds yeah looking back to that uh
038interception I think uh Dom had wike out there in the flats that he could have dumped off and and maybe helped work the clock up a little bit but I'm not against taking a shot um in the first quarter I know we talked about keeping the clock rolling um but sometimes against teams like this you got to have a big play that could get some momentum going so three down linemen for the Eagles motion manual left side it's going to be a jet out to the left side gonna be caught by number 22 and what do you know there you go Hicks on the tackle seven yard gain but good job by Logan chasing from behind and that's all you want to see as many white hats to the football as possible uh coach Germaine

040one-on-one matchup with Zach Wetzel um which is a matchup that we're gonna have to watch all night um so we're gonna have to definitely watch out for number four yeah great defensive stand here from the Eagles on the first drive did exactly what we've been talking forcing them into those uh third and long and we were able to come up big there for a stop so Eagles forced to punt fourth and 13 from their own 42. vaguely standing in about the 10. gonna be a running kick nearly runs into an eagle and Hal wetzel's got to get out of the way as the ball was just low Line Drive Wetzel nearly got taken out but the Eagles offense will come back out at the 18-yard line we're gonna stick right here saying we come usually

042we'll do pretty good defensively I also think uh offensively if we can establish up front running the ball I think that will give us a huge advantage to milking that clock tonight and and moving the ball up the field seven minutes to go in the first quarter tied in right sniffer back right we're gonna hand the ball off to the left and it's going to be nothing going for the Eagles that time as Janet got back to the line of scrimmage and you look right there I don't know if Nick Janik or uh yeah Janik no who was it Cameron yeah I don't think if he got it right away I don't know if he was expecting in it as quick as it got there or what but just an odd play yeah you really

193out man [Music] they're gonna take their time and I would imagine that's all they're gonna do so with that being said Ben Scott Carter Hicks Zach Wetzel Nick Janik Dominic vagley Hayden hoppermill Brennan wike Aiden Gaither Cody Tudor Mason Schnabel and Tom kenningstein the seniors this year as they're gonna run good job Mason vaguely making the tackle on the play for zero yards good contact there by Mason so we named those 10 seniors who are going to play their last game here at Columbia they came in with a tradition that they had to uphold and I think they did a good job getting to the playoffs once again they're going to finish this year at six and four and for those seniors you know you play your whole life some of those guys for 12
194years only one team gets to celebrate in week 14 and that's not going to be us this year yeah unfortunately not but uh these seniors have had a lot of heart this year uh you know coming out like you said six and three I'm not sure a lot of people expected that kind of record from the Eagles this year but I think it kind of just defines what kind of team these guys are and what kind of guys they are um you know never forget never you know count themselves out of games and and just fight until the end give themselves a shot so the Red Devils take a delay game on the play and there's five seconds on the game clock now as the teams are making their way to the 50-yard line so

196will come back wrap up tonight's game wrap up the season and we will do all of that when we come back to Murfreesboro right after this welcome back to Murfreesboro where the Eagles lose this one and end their season six and four they lose this one 41-28 on a great game Jared your thoughts on the game I think overall uh that first quarter we couldn't have come out and played any better anytime they scored we had an answer um and we it was it was Loki a dog fight in that in that first half um it was coming down to whoever has the ball ass is probably going to win this game um but what it really came down to was like you said um just giving them great field position on almost every time
197they had the ball um early whenever Dom had that punt maybe went out at Midfield um almost we had a kickoff that went out of bounds um and they had a lot of run backs with Don vaguely being your tackler on the kickoff team um you can't really have that but I think overall uh it was it was just it was a fun game to watch kept us on our toes a lot but sad to lose sadaluzzo seniors but um like you said there's only one winner at the end of all this yeah and it's just a great fight by The Eagles I was talking to coach uh Horner and Coach Jermaine before the game and one comment that they made was you know if we can keep them to 28 points I think we
198can give ourselves a shot and that's right around what we scored so you know I think I think coming in we had the right mindset but sometimes you just gotta tip your cap to the other team when when they got athletes and and they just make plays and their coaches make good calls so um you know I can't really fault the Eagles much here for this loss um they played really hard and fought until the end but you know sometimes you just got to give credit when credit's due and that's the the main way to break it down I mean that's all you can do at this point of the game so uh Eagles end their season six and four another good year 12 times to the playoffs in a row for the CHS Eagles
