001for the last 12 weeks these boys have been running sprints running routes on air offense first defense games against each other for some of them it's been 12 years they've been working for this moment for their senior season and it all gets kicked off here tonight welcome into the asus wild pregame show presented by asus wild video game and parlor for the 2022-2023 high school football season jared germain and alex schlemmer here with you once again to bring you eagles football and jared pre-season's over it's time to get the regular season started yeah you're right alex and uh we got a pretty tough one here in muscuto to start the season off so hopefully the boys are ready for this game and hopefully they're ready for this season you got to be ready at this
002point i mean you've been working for 12 weeks and i talked to coach warner and jermaine and said how do you keep the guys ready but you've been working this long and this hard it shouldn't take you anything to get ready for tonight yeah especially when you you've been going against your buddies all summer long you're ready to go against somebody else for a change so um it's nice to finally get the week one and we're here alex it's uh it's week one of columbia football and i'm i can't be more excited talk a little bit about last season whenever we uh we came into last season we kept saying you know no ex no experience no experience well you know what this isn't the case anymore this year coach warner and coach remain both
003said last year about 70 percent of the guys were getting their first snaps at the varsity level and this year experience isn't going to be an excuse as this team went five and five last year uh lost to the powerhouse springfield sacred heart griffin who made it all the way to the state championship like we expected them to and you know you go into that game last year first quarter it's close second quarter it's close i think we had a turnover late and uh sacred hearts scored but that experience from last year's five and five teams got to be huge for this season oh most definitely um and in the season up at shg uh like you said on your coach's corner the other night uh drawing shg in the first round that's never uh
004that's never fun but i mean that first half almost first three quarters of the game we were in it and we had shg a little scared so last year yeah not a lot of experience but hopefully going on into this year we got that experience under our belt so you come into this season this week week one you got to have expectations obviously and you know you never know what to expect we're up here in the booth we've had our week one uh hiccups already if you will so we got them figured out when you come out and you're coach horner or coach jermaine you know you're going to have those hiccups but you just hope that you have yourself a good first week yeah and it's always nice when you have uh those coaches

006who's done a lot for the football program and other programs at the school district jared you come into this season it's the 51st season for the columbia varsity program here at columbia 290 wins 198 losses in the program history and you look at the season openers 31 and 18. so columbia typically gets it uh gets off on a good foot yeah and they're usually not even conference games so we're playing out of conference teams i remember back in the day uh i think whenever you were playing you would play teams like only um i think we did have moscuta like in the late game of the of the year but and some of the first we played teams like uh morton um i'm trying to thank other teams we played but the first game of
007the year you got to be ready uh you're not playing a team that you're usually like want to play or normal to playing so um you always get a little mix of athletes and a couple different formations and a whole lot of different things going on with it too so uh week one's always uh always fun for the eagles coach warner usually gets the teams ready to go for that week one he's 15 and six on home openers and uh i remember whenever i played we played sparta actually i had a guy send me some pictures this morning of that week one game and coach horner like i said those week one expectations he said i don't care if we got to win tonight three to two let's get a victory and uh we actually
008left that game a winner of seven to six so you know you come into those weak games week one games with sparta the scooter's a little bit different though coming in 1100 students and that's the highest enrollment that a uh hokia conference team is going to play this year so pretty neat that we're getting that big one out of the way and go back to the most recent meeting we had was in 2021 last season not good for the home team for the eagles losing that game 42-14 yeah they came in and they stomped us around a little bit i remember they do have a couple guys well i think they said coach trumaine said they have 22 players returning this year so that's equal to almost every player on each side of the ball
009so that's pretty special last year i know they had a receiver that had alan middleton he's a senior this year 10 catches for 208 yards yeah you think they're going to key on him tonight i think so i think coach tremaine's got a little tag on him so uh i think they'll be a little bit more ready than they were last season well last year it started off with the bang for the eagles big man owen brewer gets that 55-yard fumble recovery and we're thinking all right looks pretty good and uh well then after that it was a lot of moscuta so hopefully this year gonna have a little bit of a different outcome can't go too much worse we're down i think it was like 35 to 14 or something like that at half
010so hope for a different outcome tonight last time that the eagles were in indian territory though here in muscuta worked out pretty well for us on one of our first games i believe we did it was it was a i think it was actually our first game a wonderful game going back and forth back and forth close game comes down to that final field goal attempt that's blocked the eagles win it and we never hit the record button who didn't hit the record yeah there's no we in that i never hit the record button all right you're right oh man there's a reason i'm not in charge of the computer anymore so that was a fun game you like to come up here this place is packed and it's a beautiful complex you got here
011they just redid this all i think in the 2017 2018 area and uh you know the stands are full here for moscow to columbia's starting to filter in and uh it's exciting to be back here for week one football yeah and in moscow it's always a it's always a good environment no matter what sport it is i feel like whenever back when i was in high school you come to a volleyball game or you come to uh you're playing at a basketball game but i don't think there's anything i like playing in moscow for a friday night football game their fans are always have the most energy their band is great and they always uh they're just ready to go on friday nights well we get to this season now let's talk a little bit
012about our returners and uh it's all going to start we're going to start on the offensive side of the football and it's all going to start with number 12 at the quarterback position and dominic vegley yeah dom's dom's a player he's been starting on varsity for four years now three years as a quarterback so uh he kind of knows what he's doing back there coach horner has a lot of faith in him and as well as the whole coaching staff and his players and all of colombia because i think everybody knows that there's no denying how good this kid is how special he can be and one of the best athletes we've ever seen go through columbia so back with him in the backfield it's going to be a kind of a platoon if you
013will at the running back position hayden habermill and dalton rainwater will be coming in they'll be your running backs hudson bryant he's going to be in there as well and then at the wide receiver portion you never know sam denny's going to be out there zach wetzel um mike bike yeah they talked on the holton meets coaches corner last night not gonna run away from you but you better be ready to tackle he's a tough physical kid yeah brendan like he doesn't have the the most speed on the team uh but he's gonna lower his shoulder he's gonna hit you he's gonna let you know uh who's got the ball so then you go into the big uglies the guys in the trenches another guy that you're going to have to start the play with
014is going to be the special guy from last year was a skilled position player and brandon jackson this year he's going to move down to the center position yeah we got a lot i know coach baker talked on that coach's corner he's really excited with the depth that he's got this season um he's i think he said he's got almost what eight or nine guys he can substitute in and out on the offense and defensive side of the ball so uh i think that's that's really a plus for uh coach baker and the offense and the defense you look at a couple other linemen to be on the offensive side uh tom kenningstein coming in at 285 schnabel 235 kish at 260 and then you got the sophomore antonis at 240 so pretty good size
015across the board maybe not the tallest but they're going to be pretty thick so uh coach horner said in that coach's corner not going to have the most speed but we could be pretty physical this year yeah and carter hick is another guy we could throw in there too uh for the dn wise i think coach germain said he's going to hold down that d-line front and we can move him on uh offensive line as well we can move him in a little sniffer back if we want he can even go play right wide receivers six foot six throw him out there by on an island with somebody let him go up and get it so i think there's a lot of big guys up here that we're looking forward to this season so we're
016about five minutes away from kickoff here in the aces wild pre-game show let's flip it over to the defensive side of the ball again a lot of guys coming back returning from last season and uh once again it's going to be number 12 last year started a safety moved up to a linebacker he was your leading tackler and then they put him back again at safety this year so who else you got on that defensive side of the ball uh you got to start off up front i mean we already said carter hicks uh if you can win the battle up front it makes it a lot harder to win games so um for the other team obviously then you can throw guys in like zach wetzel who was all-conference corner last year uh started
017off the first two or three games he was struggling a little bit but towards the back end of the season he really picked up his game and started to be in the right spot at the right time so uh yeah i'd say zach wetzel and carter hicks will look out for on the defensive side this year and then like we said brandon jackson he's going to be alignment on the offensive side of the ball and then he's going to flip over be your linebacker and your sometimes it looked over here when we were doing scout defense he was even playing a safety position so kind of odd whenever you see a safety with number 54 on it but that's a guy that can do it all and like coach baker's been saying very unselfish of
018him to be able to do it all looks like the lights are coming on now alex everybody's starting to stand up i think both teams are about to or mosquitoes walking their way down now so the new thing with the lights is jared's saying and not really taking effect right now we still have the sunshine out but the new thing are these led lights that flash and i think this could get interesting by the end of the night if they're starting to score it could be kind of interesting to see so hopefully we see some zeros i don't want to see no scores up there on the mosquito side yeah we don't need that so the mosquito indians are taking the field right now they've got their cheerleaders holding up some signs watch out eagles

021are your three keys into this game and what's going to get this season started off on the right foot i think you got to try to win the uh upfront battle with coach baker saying you got about eight or nine guys you can substitute in and out you're not going to have a lot of guys tired i know it's the first uh game of the year but um you got a lot of guy a lot of depth there um on the front line and then i also to break down and tackle i know they got a couple athletes out there um and last year i think they had three other three or four other touchdowns were 60 yard plus so and that those went off break broken tackles that us not breaking down and um
022wrapping up so i think that's those are two of the really big things and then i think uh coming here ignoring the environment but also embracing the environment you got to kind of block out everything whenever you're on the field but enjoy it and have fun because football's back and friday night football you can't there's nothing better man nothing better well the eagles will be returning the opening kickoff so we'll see what that offense is able to do and get kicked off with a bang here number 27 for muscuda we'll be doing the kicking tonight and that'll be senior braden christian back deep for the eagles looks to be number 21 hudson bryant and i believe that's number three zach wetzel back there deep for the eagles so ready or not ladies and gentlemen week
023one football is coming at you right now here we go it's gonna be a deep kick gonna be recovered at the five yard line by bryant he's gonna pick it up try to make something out of nothing now mosquito almost loses contain but they're able to keep it there and it's gonna be a good for about a seven yard return and the eagle offense is going to be brought out on the field and starting at the 13 yard line look like brian on that play didn't know if wetzel was coming over to catch it or not he kind of literally looked at him right when the ball was in the air and thought wetzel was coming over so it kind of went over his head lucky to pick it up and get get the drive
024going at the 13. looked like a lost play right there almost at the start to the way he was bouncing around but he was able to get a little bit of something so eagles are going to come out and they're going to have two tight ends two sniffer backs quarterback dom vaguely is going to be in the backfield by himself and it's going to be a quarterback run he's going to get back to the line of scrimmage and that's it nothing going there for the eagles on that first play of the game and that's something we're probably going to see a lot more this year than we did last year we're going to have a lot more up front guys losing mcconaughey who last year you could hand it off to him and he could
025get 30 yards anytime he wanted now we have vaguely back there uh by himself with which could be a major problem for defenses um having lead blockers in front of him hayden habermill's gonna be split out wide by himself to the short side of the field tight end to the right sniffer back right running back right bigly's gonna take the snap fake the throw to the right side he's gonna run left he's gonna follow his lead back get a couple yards there looks like about three and it's gonna bring up a little bit more of a manageable third and seven but still third and long it looks like moscow is just going to run man-to-man straight up with their wide receivers so far on the first two plays maddox stefan comes out along with carter
026hicks those are your two big guys that you're gonna have so it looks like now we're to go more with a wide receiver set [Music] running back hudson bryant in the backfield haberman down here closest to us brennan wike split out wide with two other receivers so we're gonna go trips right running back to the right side it's gonna be a snap to the right vaguely gets it looks across the middle of the field and it's gonna be picked off on the tip by brendan weick mascuta is gonna run it to the right side of the field and the scooter's gonna get in for a touchdown just one minute 30 seconds into the game looks like vaguely made the right read there just ball was a little too high tipped off eagle fingertips and right

029try it again see what coach horner does coming out here on first down first two plays there he kind of just wanted to get don vagley set in and get him the ball only got about three or four yards on those first two plays but see what he's got drawn up muscuta coming out white helmets purple jerseys white pants and they're only going to have three men down which kind of surprises me i think i throw more guys in the box and say you showed me that you're gonna try to run the football right now but i'm gonna make you beat me passing trips to the right side empty backfield sniffer back to the right time out on the field by the eagles that's not what you want whenever you're coming off of a uh
030a switch of possessions right there definitely not and i mean on that p-a-t there's usually not a lot of guys on that offensive squad they're usually on the sideline wrestling so they should should have been talking over there going over uh what they miss and what they're gonna formation they're gonna be in whenever they go back out there so um using a timeout not even two minutes into this game you know coach horner's got to be kind of furious over there and like we said this is that week one game that you're expecting to have some hiccups you just got to try to minimize those hiccups and uh not a good start right now but the scooters loving the start that they have they're going to come back out still with three down linemen three
031linebackers and it looks like it's just going to be man-to-man across the the wide receivers here i'm trying to figure out carter hicks in that uh uh sniffer position who's got who's over the top of him might be a linebacker motion man's number 11 for the eagles next yannick it's going to be kept by vaguely he's actually going to lose a yard did good job trying to get back to the line of scrimmage and it's going to bring up a second and 11. some with having a hicks in that position there um it's kind of hard for defenses because if you uh know that you're going to run the ball with don vaguely a lot you can lull your defense to sleep and then right over the top do a little play action to six
032five uh hicks there so be ready for that at some point in this game hudson bryant comes on carter hicks goes off trips to the right side it's gonna be a rollout to the right vig he's gonna throw it to number three wetzel it's gonna be good for about eight yards and a quick simple hitch but that's a good positive play for the eagles and get up to a third and three and that was a good rollout play there and wetzel just getting to his spot i think coach horner teaches on those outside routes you know you only got to go six seven yards create a little separation then break down real quick outside shoulder and get as many as you can and for little guys like me and little guys like zach wetzel gives
033me you can go down little confusion here now for the indians trying to get their linebackers set up the way they want them trips to the right side running back sniffer back right we're going to run it to the right dom gets up field he's going to get five and that's going to be good for the first first down of the year for the eagles and a good little response to that pick six on that first drive i think we're gonna see a lot of that this year i know i said that earlier but uh you're gonna see coach horner working the clock a little more this year we don't have a ton of athletes that we had compared last year but we do have number 12 back there and he can he can really
034set the tone and run his own game he's kind of like a point guard out there and he runs the show um so it's it's gonna be nice to see uh every we've got the third down every single play so we're gonna be running the clock a lot this year and letting vaguely do his thing on third down gonna be trips left fake it to the left side we're gonna run up the middle good job good hole there for vaguely and he's gonna lower the boom get an extra three yards and a 13-yard run getting into indian territory for another first down columbia that was just did you ever do any play like that back in the day just a simple quarterback power at the middle yeah it wasn't that fast good job by the

036showed here tonight we're gonna run the ball up the middle here it looks like we're gonna have double stack out wide and it's gonna actually be a pass to the right side good move there by number 11. nick janik he's going to gain two yards as mosquito made their way out there but it was a good move to make the first guy miss and that's just a simple little screen pass out there to the outside receiver have your uh inside receiver go block the corner and vaguely caught the ball turn real quick and chucked it over there for a good four or five yards we brought two guys out two guys in we're going to be bunched up once again everybody's in the box now for columbia and for moscow and it's a hard count

038and it's going to be a gain of nothing bring up a second and 10. yeah it looks like so when every time there's a play you have the opposite running back standing right next to coach horner so he's got different personnel for different formations so uh this year we're gonna see a lot of different formations i have a feeling i try watching who's coming in and coming out but sits every play yeah doubles the right side ball in the right hash sniffer back right coach horner says nope we're gonna go sniffer back left running back left three down linemen three wide receivers three linebackers they're gonna fake it roll out to the right vagley's looking for wetzel and it's a good decision there by vaguely just throwing it out and throwing it away third and
039ten now for the eagles and jared what are you going to call here on this play well you don't want to sling it down the field really like last play like or the last time we uh threw an interception but um i think you run the ball here i think their mosquito is going to be expecting pass they might bring a little blitz um so maybe get a little outside outside zone um get get to this side of the field got a lot of room to work over here and if you can get to a manageable fourth and five fourth and four and that's when you can take a shot maybe downfield and try to score and catch the defense off guard wetzel jannik and wike three outside wide receivers hicks comes off trips to
040the wide side of the field to the left side it's gonna be a straight pass play it's going to be another quick pass it's going to be high once again for wike and it's going to fall incomplete bring up a fourth and 10. and i think you're in four down territory here looks like we're going to send the punt team out be a 52-yard field goal attempt we did hear coach kendall say uh don bagel's been working on placement punts putting it out of bounds in certain spots so maybe he can show us a little something here and pin him inside the five or maybe even the three i think it's number one the senior alan middleton the guy that we said to watch out for is the deep man for moscow vagley gets it
041off gonna be low bounces at about the 12. wetzel was in the right place at the right time and it hits him at the 10. and that's where mosquito will take over they're going to move it up to the 12 it looks like now so first time we get to see this eagles defense jared what are you going to be keying in on here now i think up front like i said earlier i think uh any any defensive coach and offensive coach i mean you know the game starts up front um you look over the years um you have guys so so many guys going back to 2007 um that can that can wreck the game up front and i don't think going into tonight we've never had a freshman like last year we had
042antonus coming in and um he's a big boy up there and i think he's going to clog up the middle for us this play down we're going to have kenningstein kish and hicks your three down lineman looks like we're going to send a blitz on the right side all of our linebackers are up close and they are going to blitz to the right side he's going to be picked up quarterback's going to have to roll he's going to throw against his body across the middle of the field it's going to go incomplete intended for number five quincy hall good job by the quarterback making something out of nothing but good job by the defense on the secondary for the eagles yeah good job by beltsome in there uh he was that i think he was
043that backside corner and that i think he's garden middleton over there so middleton ran a poster out that ended up all the way on this side of the field and he was still guarding him so looks like bilteman's gonna have the job of uh guard middleton tonight 5 45 in the first quarter big drive here for the eagles defense try to get that offense back on the field under 10 seconds now on the play clock doubles with a sniffer back left running back left sending a man in motions number five they're gonna hand the ball off nearly fumbled he's got blockers downfield he's got the edge he's gonna have to be stopped by number 12 dom vaguely and he is but not after a 20-yard gain and a first down for the indians i don't
044know if you saw it but beltaman just put middleton on his butt middleton went up to block him and he put him on his butt there i know they got a 20 yard gain there but i like to see the physicality from biltman over there guarding their best player trips to the right side running back right three down linemen for the eagles with three linebackers it's going to be man on this right side gonna hand the ball off up the middle this time great job there looked like number five maddox stefan the junior coming up and making the tackle and keeping it to a five-yard game on the first play of the game they were chucking it down field so you never know you got to be ready on the defensive side of the ball
045doubles to the right side sniffer back right running back right eagles are going to be blitzing off the right side they're going to hand the ball off and they're going to run right up the middle and what do you know number 73 tom kenningstein doing what he was supposed to do and making the play in the backfield had a basic slant to the right there and running back ran right to into his arms and he said hey thank you thanks for that tackle i'll take that brings up third down [Music] first third down for the eagles defense we'll see what happens here the ball at the 41 yard line get a stop here then force them into punting the ball that'd be nice to get that offense on the field double set three down lineman
046two linebackers look like they're blitzing and here they come doesn't get picked up they're gonna have to throw quarterback scrambles again he finds number one going across the middle of the field he's gonna make one man miss and brought down by number three wetzel and that's good for about a 40-yard gain and a first down there for the indians it's pretty quick man he's pretty quick caught that across the middle and that's another play right there quarterback just scrambled to the right side indians get up to the line of scrimmage real quick running back they're going to move them to the left side it's going to be a quick handoff to them running back up the middle kingston kenningstein once again if you get in his bear paws it doesn't seem like he lets go
047got to eliminate those big plays especially on third down let us know where you're listening from tonight comment on us shoot us a text we'd love to hear where you're coming from blitz picked up this time fake the handoff they're gonna throw out wide and it's gonna be a great chime by biltman making the tackle on quincy hall and it's gonna be a gain of four and another third down for the eagles defense and middleton was going out to block block him there and he made a good evade move and made that tackle if he doesn't make that tackle he might that's another touchdown for the indian so great job by built him in to shed that tackle or shed that block and go right for the ankles indians are two for two on third

077of a shocking loss to see on that schedule yeah it's nice playing a bunch of those teams that uh you don't really get to play i know i said that earlier but um i know moscuta and waterloo play each other they're in the same conference and we play both of them so uh and jerseyville and jerseyville so yeah we got a lot of teams from that conference that we play so uh i know some of those coaches may be sharing a little bit of film don vagley's gonna be doing our kicking it's funny on these special teams the coaches on both sides of the field are lining guys up and week one there you go you'll you'll have that on that game coach kendall putting everybody in the right spot so is muscuda vaguely sends

110but um i think overall they're doing a pretty pretty good job you just on the defensive side you just got to stop big plays um know where middleton's at we've we said that from the beginning and i bet he's already got eight nine touches um in this game so um as long as you can limit their athletes touches and wrap up and tackle um try not to get as many uh delay game calls or stupid penalties i like how this one's looking offense is looking pretty good don begley's running the ball really well and connected with yannick on that beautiful ball from about 30 yards out to end the half so that was a great way to end the half and you can't really end it much better no and you got to feel good
111about that like you said it was a rough first quarter second quarter you turned around and if you're coach horner you got to go in and get that cross to the guys hey you know what we didn't play a perfect first quarter but we're down two scores you get a stop and a score anything can happen you're in it yeah one play can change a whole lot of things here so so not a bad first first half i'm not not too disappointed not uh what one or two penalties yeah i think we had the one hold on a kick off and that was kickoff somebody that's a game that coach horner is not too happy about it yeah that's a tough one and mascuto had done that too and that's just a week one kind
112of deal um you don't want to have them but those kind of mistakes are gonna happen and uh we talk about middleton he's been a big threat and even hall quincy hall number five yeah last year three receptions for 41 yards and this year i bet he's doubled that already oh he had himself a heck of a first first half so defensively we haven't given up too many big plays i like how we're getting into that third and medium third and long occasionally we just can't get off the field yeah and that's i know that's gonna eat coach germain alive tonight because any time you can get in a good third down on defense on the defensive side of the ball whether it's third and three third and fourth third and five those are those
113are great things that can happen on the defense so we just need to be able to make the right make the right calls and get in the right spots and try not to let those big plays happen and um maybe see a fumble or a big hit interception something to get that defense going because uh mosquitoes kind of made the columbia the scoot offense has made the columbia defense not look too great tonight but um coach germain's gonna make some adjustments at halftime i know and um we'll see if he gets vaguely we haven't really called vaguely's name too much on the defensive side of the ball so we might see if you put him over middleton i know you want to save him on the offensive side of the ball and not waste all
