Columbia Eagles vs. Freeburg Midgets Varsity Football

001[Music] wow [Music] good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to another exciting edition of columbia eagles football coming to you live from freeburg illinois for another big cahokia conference matchup here and it doesn't really matter what happens the last two weeks it doesn't matter what happened last four weeks we got a big game here tonight for cahokia conference matchup both teams coming in at two and two and [Music] the ace is wild pregame show behind the mic contractual obligations freeberg has with the nhs which is where the game will be streamed from tonight we cannot show the game on our camera so behind the mic jared here we are this is something new i like it um yeah coming in freeburg um it's always a big game when especially when you're coming to freeburg um

002big conference game it's going to be a rowdy one tonight so i think columbia needs to come in ready and ready for a tough one tonight freeburg they won the state championship in baseball last year so they're going to be doing their ring ceremony tonight so that's one thing going on you also have the homecoming going on as well so going to be a lot of people and freeburg this is their super bowl teams like pretty much in every sport when they play columbia you know they can go saying football they can go one and eight if they beat columbia that's a good season for them yeah and especially for a lot of columbia kids just me being one of them um freeberg's always a a game that you kind of circle on your schedule

003kind of that in waterloo is the two that i always circled um especially just coming into this type of environment and the fans are always loud and they're always ready for for a good game and i just think tonight's gonna tonight's gonna be a good one to watch yeah this is a game that you don't really wanna match the intensity because the intensity is there you're gonna be you wanna set the toner you're gonna set the tone early so a little bit about last week columbia coming off the 21-0 victory over roxanna it is the uh a pretty much dominant game all along the columbia eagles plate from opening kickoff to the final victory formation defense only given up no points obviously yeah too many yards mistler started the game off defensively though with that

004scoop and score and that got us going from there yeah anytime your defense can put up boards or put up points before uh on the board before your offense can that's that's pretty nice and coach germain and coach horner have it a little bit easier when their defense can put up points on the board so um i think that has was definitely a plus last week our offense came together a little bit more and our offensive line is starting to run their feet more and our defense is starting to make some plays i think last week it was more of a test with a different offense that we don't really see a lot it's assignment football that coach germain talks about each week and i think last week really really validated the columbia defense because

005i think that was uh it's tough to play against the defense like that but i think when you when you get up um 21 nothing whenever you're playing against an offense like that it's it's hard to for a team like that to come back so great job by the defense yeah you see vaguely they're eight rushes for a couple yards there and mcconaughey was right there with them vaguely eight for 55 mcconaughey nine for 65 so pretty even there and then vaguely throwing six of eight 84 yards the one pick was a bad pick he just under threw megan said he had him open and he had a touchdown out of it just under through him and missler there three receptions 53 yards did a little dancing down in the corner and uh to get

006into the end zone defensively again mistler saying his name 22-yard scoop and score coach jermaine said he actually missed his assignment didn't do the right thing but when you score that doesn't matter so mcconaughey with a pick hicks with a tackle brewer once again leading and tackles with 8 10. denny we say his name all the time the linebacker turned safety eight tackles in the sophomore and brandon jackson with eight tackles so everybody did their job last weekend yeah and i think something that we've said with that that we've seen the last two weeks is vaguely and mcconaughey coming up to kind of get more of those guys in the mix you have up front on the d-line like um on who was that owen brewer my coach germaine said last night he said he

007was the one that set that edge and was the one that kind of forced it back in and kind of forced that fumble and that first score last week for the eagles so i think as uh as long as everyone keeps doing their job and doing their assignment i think uh we could we could keep getting some w's and on that running play that vaguely we just showed right there he could have gone left right middle wherever he wanted to go it was open and this is the play here with mistler new form new play i believe had a little bit of a wrinkle play action froze that guy enough mistler makes a good play to catch the ball and then right here as he's down the sideline has to do a little sidestep and

008a little dancing to get in and that's what put the eagles up 21 nothing and you know after that scooping score we didn't need anything so i was just icing on the cake and all of that was done in the first half you go to that second half they had the ball for almost yeah i think it was ten minutes in the third quarter we ran four plays in the third quarter and then we only kneeled the ball at the end of the game that's the only offensive plays we had we had seven plays in the second half so so coach germain talked last night in the holton meets coach's corner at ben don't break mentality we had it last weekend and we're going to need it here tonight hopefully we don't even have to

010asus wild pregame show here at freebird alex schlemmer and jared germain here conference uh standings week one of the conference is out of the way so that puts columbia at 1-0 freeberg lost last week to breeze central that was a good game so they're 0-1 so salem's leading the way 3-1 overall 1-0 in the conference they're putting up the most points so they get to be that's their uh tie-breaker breeze central 3-1 like i said they beat freberg last week columbia goes to two and two with the win over roxanna freberg owen one roxanna 01 and wood river 0-1 1-3 overall so you look at that that's a little bit more of what we used to see in those first couple of weeks when it was just the overall record columbia's down the bottom we're

011not used to seeing that yeah and coming into this one this can be a very big game if you want to get in the playoffs at the end of the year i think this one is going to be a tough one to win but i think looking kind of down the road you've got east almond river and salem who can be winnable games very winnable games and i think if you sneak this one in there then you can have yourself a playoff berth right there so along with central and jerseyville is our last game of the year so those can be very tough games so i think this one could could potentially be a must win whenever it's all boiled down to it so i'm hoping these these guys come in ready yeah you gotta

012get to that five wins as the the number that can get you in then it comes down to playoff points i think this year we will have enough playoffs probably pretty good with those now the problem is you go five and four you're facing some big dog up at nine to know and typically it's going to be somebody like a rock chester team who's got a dynasty going on right now so like you said must win game i think i would consider it that um just because it is freebrook it's a must yeah now you throw the playoff implications and in the end you're gonna need it as well so this is the one conference game going on this weekend uh you got us in freeberg then you look at the rest of the conference

013schedule you got bree central at east alton wood river i would assume bree central wins that and then roxanna goes to salem and again i'm going to assume that salem should win that game there so you're you're not going to have any movement up top yeah and or at the bottom really either but so just got to get the job done here tonight and that takes us into tonight's game where the eagles and the midgets are facing each other this is the longest consecutive series that we have had in our opponents it dates back to 1975 i believe it is and uh it's the longest series that we have haven't missed any games in between that stretch but columbia 26 and 21 coach horner 17-4 with the one meeting um coming in the 18 playoffs

014i believe it was um i asked coach warner last night in the coach's corner i said what's what's your favorite victory he goes i'm going to need a couple he was my first one my first one's going to be back in the 2003 season it was the first time columbia had beaten freiburg in a while so he was excited about that and then he said that 2018 victory in the playoffs was good last year columbia wins 44-21 and this win streak that columbia is on dates back to 2011 had 11 victories in the 10 years the last loss came at columbia whenever we bid on a hitch and go we ended up losing the game 13 to seven so not that i'm bitter about that girl or anything but you know hey that happens that's

015just what what it boils down to so i talked to coach kendall tonight i said coach how are we going to get a victory here tonight and he said you know we're going to have to match the tone we're going to set the tone whatever you want to call it and like you've already mentioned once tonight you mentioned last night that's the biggest thing you can do yeah and definitely coming in these guys are going to be ready 11 straight years i think like you said columbia has beat freeburg so um columbia has always seemed to have have the target on their back in this conference and um i kind of like that because everybody's gunning for you gives you more competition each week and i just think uh freeberg's gonna gonna be really ready

016for this one especially with all their extracurricular stuff going on so um gonna be gonna be a good one tonight i asked him on the offensive side of the ball i said hey you know two weeks ago we were told we were going to start in a hurry we did last week we were told we were going to start in a hurry we did and you know i said are we going to do that again tonight and he goes absolutely we're going to have to um coach warner said in the score early yeah yeah in the houghton coach's corner he said you know they've got the ability to give up big plays so when we have that opportunity to get a big play we've got to take advantage of it and i'd like to see

017columbia slinging around a little bit tonight yeah and on their defensive side of the ball i think coach germain and coach horner both said last night they're going to have seven guys in the box and just playing man-to-man across the board so as a wide receiver i'm loving that because i'm getting to run any route i want and with bob vaguely back there if you can give him enough time like the last two weeks our line has given giving him just enough time to throw the ball and run a little bit and i think if don vagley just has enough time we can we can see some big plays tonight from the columbia offense he's coming in tonight completing 56 of his passes 41 of 73 387 yards four touchdowns and two interceptions so that

018gives him an 87.95 passer rating whatever that means uh we talked about that last year we still don't know what that means so then defensively i asked coach kendall i said you know freeberg's coming in their quarterback i believe he's only completing 42 percent of his passes yeah 38 of 84 for 508 yards with four touchdowns and six interceptions so that's what i asked him i said you know what are we going to do to stop their offense he goes if we can get them out of a running situation and have them sling the ball around i like our chances take our athletes and that's that's that that's something that coach horner has kind of done over the past couple years taking taking our athletes over a lot of other teams athletes and um just

019having having guys that you can spread the ball around to and having guys make big plays so i think tonight that's going to have to happen make a couple big plays and get out of here with the w so one of our guys that makes all those big plays jay mistler we talked to him this week and here's what he had to say about tonight's matchup a lot more turnovers are going to happen and more defensive scores two scooping scores touchdowns on the year i guess just block everything out i almost see there's a little bit of motivation kind of stick it to them pretty exciting to get a win on their homecoming on their home field during their ring ceremony thing so that'd be pretty exciting so it's almost motivation just kind of blocking

020out play how you know how to play i think everyone knows about what it's going to take to get when this win this game everyone has their own thing of to get them ready i think it's pretty cut and dry you don't need much motivation for a game like this it's a very good point you don't need much motivation for a game like tonight yeah when you have freeberg on your schedule uh it's it's gonna be a rowdy one and a good one no matter what so i'm looking i'm looking forward to this one tonight and this is one of those games you know you don't need the motivation you know what's at stake you know that a conference championship could be on the line you know that a playoff implication could be on you

021get on twitter you see all the trash talk already i mean i i see it not i know i'm only three years out but i got on twitter last night and i already see trash talk going on between both fan both fan bases so um tonight tonight should be a rowdy one and i'm excited so were you a trash talker yeah absolutely yeah of course all right jared we're about five minutes away from kickoff as uh freeburgs coming down onto the field right now they just got some guns going off with some blue smoke that's pretty cool and all but what do you think what's your prediction for tonight's game oh well i think columbia's got to come out and set the tone early but i'm going to take the eagles 2014. i i don't

022think it's going to be a high scoring game i think both defenses are going to play really well and i think columbia is going to come out on top by a touchdown columbia by touchdown i'm going to go a little bit closer i'm going to say columbia 27-24 i wasn't sure about that 24 how that was going to happen but i just watched her kick her out here booting 50 yard feelings and that wind out there is a little uh it's windy out there so if you got the wind at your back you'll get a couple yards extra on that on that wind yeah in this place there is nothing around us it is nothing but fields in a school around us so that wind will be a factor as you can already hear the

026game and getting a victory well i think just coming into to freeburg it's always going to be a rough environment so you gotta you got to come out early and be ready and i think you got to prevent the big plays if you can take those away you're always in a good spot to win the ball game and i think you got to set the tone early coming into a hostile environment tonight and with everything going on all the extra curricular activities during halftime and just a big crowd i think you got to set the tone early and let them know that you're here ready to play doubles to the left side going to be a run to the left side they're just going to try to follow their big men and they're not going

027to be able to get anything as it's going to be about a two-yard gain and a great job by brandon jackson getting up and clocking that hole right away and something we didn't really have in the first two weeks was those touch backs that we've got the last two weeks from dom vagley so that i remember the first two weeks versus moscuto and waterloo they were getting kick returns all the way back to almost midfield so it's huge whenever your defense can come out on the 20-yard line doubles tied for freeburg it's gonna be a pass play then go across the middle of the field caught by number 99 big boy running down he's going to get about 12 yards and he just ran a crossing pattern and it was caught number 99 on the

028play jacob carmack he has three receptions for five yards he just got 15 there freeberg's gonna go tempo he plays in that little sniffer spot like jay mistler does so we'll see more of him out of the backfield motion man was going to be number 85 but there is going to be a false start first we've got an officiating crew coming from massachusetts new jersey ontario i think there was one illinois guy in there but for some reason i don't think those are the real hometowns if they are they're getting paid mighty fine so that's going to bring up a first in 15 now with 11 minutes to go here in the first quarter trips to the left side running back left ball on the right hash thunderberg's gonna fake the handoff gonna be caught

029again by number 99 who's gonna get about 10. that was a quick release there by thunderbird getting the ball out to number 99 carmack and just from based off that last play there you see mcconaughey kind of playing more of a safety position in that middle of the field was kind of wide open all you have is jay missler and brandon jackson and their first first thought is run so they're they're head down see what we got here going to be another run play and it's going to be sneaky oh yeah that was brandon jackson was it brandon jackson comes up fighting off a block well that is kaczynski it is kachinsky the number's jackson i thought 42. oh he's 42. well good job kaczynski you did a great job too big third down here

032football there and that's something coach germain always expresses in practice getting more hats to the football and saw that there on that last play freeberg's got four rushing or running backs with 25 or more carries haven't seen much of them tonight look like a quick start but they're gonna go verts down the middle of the field they got a guy down there and it's going to be caught at the five just over the fingertips of a jumping mechanic it looks like number seven holcomb is their number one receiver we'll have to hone in on tonight with 12 catches 160 yards and two touchdowns on the season mcconaughey was fingertips away from breaking up that pass but now they got inside the five yard line number 84 your motion man they're going to try to run

034a lead block and they're going to get in for a freebird touchdown [Applause] [Music] they had a motion man coming from right to left sometimes motion can confuse the defense a little bit because if you're in man-to-man most likely down there uh inside the 5-10 yard line you're most likely going to be in man-to-man um and when you have someone going in motion and you have to account for that guy sometimes you don't bump and sometimes you uh don't communicate with your other guy so they don't know who's supposed to take care of him but great play call there good snap good hold and the kick is up so freeburg is going to take a lead seven nothing with seven minutes and 57 seconds on the mandy mcguire group scoreboard we are going to send

036that next drive but um a couple opening drives this year i don't think our opening drives have gone really well i don't i don't think we've scored on an opening drive yet this year so we'll see if uh what we got tonight gonna be seven in the box for the midgets like we expected it's going to be a stretch play to the left side and mcconaughey and not going to get anything on the play there's actually three running backs in the backfield on that play two of them standing next to vagley and mcconaughey was the pistol back behind him we're gonna have doubles this time second and nine once again freeberg's gonna have seven guys in the box and like jared was saying earlier in the game man-to-man on the outside is how it looks

037right now gonna be a quick right pass to the right side gonna be caught by saigon he's gonna get six that's gonna bring up a manageable third down and two that's something we've seen probably every week with these corners and linebackers and safeties playing six seven yards deep we've seen those arrow routes thrown don vaguely has thrown them on the dot every every single time and you're getting four five six yards every time you run it so if they're going to sag off like that good call coach horner to keep throwing the ball to his receivers in the flat double side left side sniffer back left middle of the field is wide open we're going to put mcconaughey back to a pistol back now going to take the snap going to hand the ball off

038to mcconaughey he's going to go up to the middle he's going to run into a guy he's going to keep his feet moving he's going to get enough for a first down great job kyle mcconaughey that second and third effort got him that first down he wouldn't have had it if uh that first guy held on to him but broke a tackle or two and ran into the back of kaczynski there kind of stood him up right at the skyline he had to work to get that extra yard so we're going to go with this new formation it's going to be that looks so confusing back there doesn't it it's going to be vaguely with mcconaughey behind him hicks to the right side of vaguely and missler to the right side of hitch it's going

039to be a stretch i like that side it's got a lot of blocks i like that good to keep the ball and he's going to run good for eight yards and i like that and coach warner talked last night in the uh holton meets coach's corner first play or first down play is the biggest play of this game right now and i think the first first down is the biggest biggest down of in any football game because i think if you get a penalty or if you lose some yardage on that first play second and 15 is a lot worse than about second and six so false start on the play on the eagle so it's going to bring up his second down and eight so what were we just saying about that first down

040i was saying i think first down is the most important important down in any football game because whenever you if you have a a penalty or uh get get a sack or something on that first down it's hard to come back from uh when you lose yardage on that first down bring it up at second and 15 or second and 16. it's hard to come back from that gonna be the same formation going to be a run to the right side where mcconaughey's running hard and he's gonna bring back to a third and two he ran downhill in a hurry on that play i kind of like that formation coach horner put in though having missler and carter hicks two lead blockers for don vagley at the quarterback position i'll probably see a lot more

041of that tonight you might probably see it right here on this play third down in two gonna be a counter play this time with mcconaughey he's going to keep his feet moving i think he's going to be short they're going to give it to him i think actually yeah i like that spot up top great spot first down eagles wow cunning stein comes off the field lost his helmet number 72 i believe is kish coming in and something you just saw right there the lineman all moved around so think about that's a great big great thing about our lives one lineman gets heard or one lineman yeah has a helmet malfunction you got to move a couple guys around because if you take a center out or a guard got to be able to know

042all the spots on the offensive line trips left they're going to have mccoy down the middle of the field that's going to be intercepted interception by number 80 84. eli horner the big player that the freebird midgets have and it's going to be picked off at the 23-yard line [Applause] wasn't a horrible ball just mechanically got out jumped he was kind of he was kind of playing a free safety like almost all the way over here and he i think we ran three verts right down the middle of the field and he kind of just drifted all the way over to the middle of here where mcconaughey was and kind of just robbed that one from him just took it away so the defense back out on the field doubles the left side running back

043left sniffer back left they're going to run it to the left they're going to get six yards [Applause] in on the play columbia is rolling with four down linemen it's like four of the other guys as linebackers and it's pretty much everybody in the box for the eagles defense tonight you almost have mcconaughey playing like a inner mid [Music] he's whenever they have doubles he's more kind of playing on these receivers but when they go more inside he's playing more as a linebacker corner is the motion man they're not going to hand it off to him though and it's going to be a quarterback keep he's going to get five that's going to bring up a first down [Music] reminder ladies and gentlemen we're just going to be doing nothing but behind the mic as

044we cannot show the the game as it's happening and we're also running off of a cell phone tonight so we've done that a couple times before haven't we if coverage is spotty we uh we're given a wi-fi password that didn't work so we're trying to do what we can and we're going to take all of our sponsors go on the fly there's an injured eagle on the play can't see a number so we are going to head to a break just under five minutes to go in the first quarter here at freeburg high school the high school [Music] first and ten for the midgets with four minutes and 52 seconds remaining in the first quarter motion man's going to be horner this time he's coming at us going to be a pass that we bid

045on the hitch and luckily it's about two yards over the head wetzel was the closest man there but he was still probably six yards away from the ball yeah that's what you call getting burnt but hey it happens whenever you see that that run flow coming coming your way sometimes you might bite on it and if your guys running a hitch acting like he's gonna block and then whoop slides right out next to you um i'm sure wetzel won't let another one get past him second and ten gonna be horner in the motion man again they're gonna hand it off coming towards us this time boy denny and it's a great job denny forcing it back to the inside gonna be good for five yards he's playing in that safety position so he had the

046when you're in that safety position and you see it's run you have to fly straight down field and sam denny did that there force it back in only two yard gain so it's going to bring you third down and five in on the tackle there was hicks he's the defensive end so great job for him to run and get the football after getting blocked doubles for the midgets try the hard count nobody moves sending a motion man horner number 84 five seconds to go on the play clock running out of time hopefully they don't notice but they do they're going to take the snap going to be a quick slant to the middle of the field and it's gonna depend on the spot no i don't know about that questionable spot this one doesn't help

047us though first down for the midgets that was a generous spot if you ask me but first and all they're doing with that that carmack number 99 they're just putting them right there on that uh where jay mister usually plays in that sniffer position and when they fake that run they're just tossing it right over the middle be a trap play to the left side he runs into his own man and that's where the columbia eagles defense is just gonna swarm fish is the first one to make contact and it's gonna be a gain of a half a yard kish and brewer in on the tackle freiburg once again pretty big offensive line got some good sides there left tackles a pretty big kid over there you usually have their average their average height and

048weight but we didn't have the roster today did we trips to the left side sniffer back left they're going to run the stretcher left and a run going to get about four yards he's going to keep his feet moving and get another yard out of it eagles defense there looked like they just kind of snapped a little bit on the play vaguely comes up to make that tackle had a couple angles that could have been taken a little better there too a couple linebackers went more downfield than taking a good angle two minutes and 40 seconds remaining ball on the eagles 48-yard line third down and three send motion man again in horner they're going to run the ball up the middle though and they're going to get enough to at least make it close

067is the worst rule ever because i mean what else do you want him to do whenever you want him just to run down the field with him and not do anything like you want him just to skip like yeah just let's just hold the hands and run down the field while we score on you but no great job there because usually when you see those screen passes like that there's a lot of things that can go wrong the quarterback doesn't drop back far enough you have linemen like i said that can run down the field and cause you a penalty even not getting the ball uh because vaguely has has to let that defensive line through and then he just tosses it right over the top and that's what we did there and mcconaughey found

101team so we are going to send it into halftime and we will be back in a few short minutes as they go all the way down the uh the sideline on the fence and they got everything filled up here in the stands chris smith the midgets baseball team is now getting their state championship ring and they beat the eagles in the sectional championship beat them 11-1 then they go into the super sectional game i think they win that one 15-8 all members and they go into the state tournament and dominate those two games so congratulations to the midgets baseball team on the state championship i think they just said they were 38-3 on the season so heck of a season there for the midgets and they were solid from the first lead-off hitter to the

10212th hitter i feel like they they were a good team and that we actually streamed that game i think that was one of the last games where we only had one camera angle so maybe we had oh no we did have two cameras we had one side view and one from behind the field so hopefully that's something that we'll be able to do again this year and maybe we'll call the game a baseball game oh man i don't know about that well you get to get a previous baseball player up there i don't know about me i'll fall asleep in the box i'm sorry this baseball's just too slow for me man too slow really yeah i just mean there's so many good storytelling times in there between you know 40 second pitches it's great

103yeah that then what's the point of broadcasting you're not even talking about the game then a little bit so i guess that's going to be be the next thing we're going to have to have a press box for the baseball games now i'll do some basketball i believe next week we're going to have um graduate adam i believe next week will be our sideline reporter so that'll be kind of neat to uh and i believe they will be that's all in the works right now with the basketball season we're going to try to stream all those games and i believe jonah james and adam willimei are going to be the two calling that game um i think foot or basketball is a little too quick for me and especially you don't know the players or

106the what we've been doing um on the defensive side we're uh i think we're going against the run pretty well as long as we can take away some of those big plays that could have been big plays we got a couple wide receivers that got past us got burnt on a couple go routes but i think if we can clean those up and clean a couple penalties up on the defensive side i think we'll be all right but on the offensive side i think we just keep doing what we've been doing and giving our athletes space to run and having mcconaughey be patient and don vaguely being patient i think i think we'll be okay teams are making their way out to stretch right now columbia here trying to go 2-0 in the conference freeberg

107trying to get that first conference victory again we look at the uh you look at the playoff picture in the future you need those five wins and this is one of those games that you need to go your way in order to get your fifth win um if everything goes the right way and if you can get six lock yourself in get yourself a better draw that's gonna help you out in the future as well yeah because i know we talked about it earlier in the in the pre-game we said central and jerseyville those will be those are always two pretty tough games to win uh no matter what year it is but um salem and east saltwood river those may come a little easier but you can't go lighter on those teams because you
