001[Music] good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the week five coaches corner presented by houlton meats trap house steak burgers here at aces wild we figured we got a big week got a big game we're gonna have a big crew tonight we got coach warner coach jermaine jared germain myself alex schlemmer thank you all for tuning in and thank you guys for joining us this week coming off the uh big week four victory at roxanna the first conference game of the year always good to get off on that hot start in the conference and roxanna we took care of business from opening drive with the defense starting the scoring off early coach germain yeah i mean you know they're a team that's going to run the football and you know it's assignment football up

002front our guys did a good job and jay mister was able to uh you know see the ball laying on the ground and obviously picked it up and ran it back for scoop and score so we're expecting big things out of our defense this week as well but it's just assignment football everybody's gotta do a job and now that makes your job a lot easier too coach warner because once you get on the board early you've got a lead and you can play with the cushion you can play with and makes your play calling a little bit easier as well yeah for sure i think that's the third defensive touchdown of the year and uh i think they're i'm better be careful they're gonna score more than i do but uh no yeah i mean

003it definitely makes a big difference and really what it does i think for the whole team is uh kind of gets everybody to kind of settle into the game early whenever that happens and so that's a big part of it and obviously it's a momentum shift for us when the defense can score because you know it doesn't happen as often so it was was a great way to get the thing started offensively we came out didn't really light up the scoreboard or the stat sheet once again i mean we haven't really done that this year we do enough we get the victories uh 120 yards rushing the night or last weekend though you have kaneki nine rushes for 65 yards and don vagley eight rushes for 55. both those guys averaging seven six yards a

004carry it's a lot easier on second and three rather than second and ten or even just getting that third down and manageable as well yeah i mean we we actually moved the ball pretty well in the first half offensively against roxanna and uh you know what probably doesn't show up in the in the uh in the box score if you didn't watch the game was uh our defense had trouble getting off the field in the second half and uh we had ran uh up until the very last series of the game before we took a knee we ran four offensive plays in the entire second half and uh credit to our defense for standing strong and stopping them on the one yard line stopping them again inside the 20. uh so that was huge but

005uh you know the offense starting to click a little bit more i think i mean it didn't seem that way in the second half because we didn't run the ball that much but uh you know we're getting into some more of those manageable second and third downs and you can do a lot more stuff as a play caller whenever you're in those those positions so uh but but we'll have our hands full this week freebird's good defense uh uh we're gonna have score early let's go early and you said that a couple weeks ago you said we're going to start off early or we're going to be thinking oh shoot here we go again and last week you did it two weeks ago you did it so that's starting early thing something makes it pretty

006easy and whenever you can only rush the ball 120 yards you pass the ball for 85 makes a pretty balanced attack you know might not be the 100 100 but it's still pretty balanced uh last week dom vaguely once again he had six for eight for 84 yards the one touchdown pass went to missler down the left side and uh you know going first six for eight and throwing the ball to four different receivers nobody can really hone in on one guy you're gonna sling it around to anybody on the offensive side of the ball efficiency is important and you know when you uh when you throw it you want to make sure that we catch it and and we we did that last week and uh you know minus minus one mistake that dom

007made on a ball that he under through and and uh one that he overthrew you know for his his two incompletions were probably uh he played pretty solid game yeah an offensive little line once again giving you plenty of time giving you plenty of holes to run a couple highlights from the week um on one of the russian plays dom cutter ran left he could ran right he could have ran up the middle he had down field blocking all the way around and that makes it easy too for him yeah i think one thing that uh that you lose sight of all our offensive lines starting to gel and play better and come together is uh the job that our receivers are doing on the perimeter block and that's been a big part and you

008know that's a tough job out there when you're in space not only to tackle but the block is it's tough and yeah jared you know from your days of playing wide receiver and those guys have been doing a really good job of that and you know all it takes is to kind of get in the way sometimes but to be in the right place to get in the way is important and to give dom and kyle just a little bit of space so they can go make plays is really really important now it takes a split second that's what jared said before he's like all you got to do is just get one hand on him push him off his line get in one step and that's right that's all you need so now we'll

009flip it over defensively pitching the shutout uh had the shutout last year to open the season at redbud or against redbud last year then we had another one back in i believe it's 2019 also against red bud so three years three shutouts for coach duran no pressure we need another one this year but you know like coach warner said you get a stop on the one yard line you get however many plays they ran they had the ball for 33 minutes i believe in that in the game so your defense had their work cut out for him and they answered the call for you this week we have nine kids that pretty much go both ways you know a lot of them are skilled positions but a lot of those kids are down people as

010well so especially midway through that third quarter the offense we played last week you know it's two yards three yards four yards and they bust one for five so it's the mentality of bend but don't break and uh you know we picked up a couple i think silly penguins on that last drive in the third quarter face mask or something kept kept the chains moving forward we got to clean that stuff up but uh we've got to get teams in situations where it's second long we can't let like coach knows he hates to be second long we can't let it be second five second four we've got to get people in those situations and now you love that second and ten because you can pin your ears back and let the boys go play and

011they love it too i know i told jared i think it was this past week i said i got 11 guys on the field right now i'm sending all 11. i'm calling it geronimo you know it makes a little bit more fun for everybody involved um mistler in that first drive i think it was the third play of the game we were just talking a little bit ago on that play it's all set up by your defensive end doing their job the linebacker comes up to do their job and like you said jay kind of got away with jay got away with uh shooting the closed window he went to the wrong window there but uh owen brewer did a great job of setting the edge up and then even brandon jackson from the backside

012linebacker was able to close the window and i think it was dom and i think he might dom might have had three strips in that game the other night and we got credit for one the dom stripped the ball out and jay was in the right spot at the right time kind of like you know being at the casino he was the right spot at the right time was able to pick the ball up and found the way to get in the end zone so i'm happy we practiced that uh every friday and then pre-game scoop and score so i was happy to see jay get in the end zone not only on the offensive side of all the defensive like you said he made a little shifty move there juking the guy out to

013get into the end zone get that on his on his touchdown catch too so yeah we give him a hard time all the time you got to love him he was he was an offensive lineman when he was a freshman so he's he's been wanting to be a receiver for a long time so it was nice to see him catch a touchdown and get in the end zone on the tumbling cover bruce's time to shine as we as we would say in the longest yard mistler led the tackle or led the team in tackles with 12 owen brewer another 10 tackles and then meganson with uh eight there looks like sam denny coming in with eight as well and that's a kid that was a linebacker and now he moved him back to a defensive

014back and he's still making the plays when you need him to as well yeah we've had after the first two weeks we had to move some people around just from the you know standpoint of putting some people in different positions and you know credit to all of our kids they've learned new positions and then they're adapting to those positions and uh you know we're trying to put people in the best spot to get give the defense the opportunity to do the best we can on the field well there's not too much to talk about second half like we said roxanna had the football we had seven plays three of which were knees correct uh correct so not too much to talk about we kept the shot out good job you kept them out of the

015end zone when they had the ball at the one yard line so we're gonna head to a break and we'll come back we'll talk conference standings conference schedule and the big cokia conference vic or uh match-up hopefully a victory against freeburg this week so we will be back with the holt meets coaches corner after this [Music] welcome back to the holton meets coaches corner presented by holton meats chop house steak burgers here at aces wild we got kokia conference week two match-ups here this week in the conference standings so far salem leading the way they are 1-0 free central 1-0 and columbia at 1-0 salem brie central are both three and one on the season columbia comes in at two and two freeberg wood river roxanna all took the loss last week going 0-1 freeburg

0162-2 wood river 1-3 and roxanna 1-3 so big pivotal match-up here for the eagles and the midgets this week coming in fairly even freeberg scoring 33 points a game giving up 21 and columbia scoring 22 giving up 26. so you come into a caocula match-up what's the key to getting another conference victory and working your way to our conference championship go ahead coach uh well i guess you're gonna get the standard answer but it's uh blocking and tackling better than they do no i you know games like this you're gonna go into a hostile place uh it's gonna be you know it's gonna be noisy like it always is they haven't beat us in um uh ten years eleven match ups so you know it's it's uh they're gonna their kids are gonna be fired

017up and so with their student section and so you know how can we uh how will our young kids uh handle that that atmosphere you know you gotta be able to keep that even keel and then you know the obvious with turnovers and things of that sort but honestly it's going to be how are we going to respond because their kids are going to be super excited they're going to come out ready to smash us in the mouth and we're going to have to match their intensity and and their aggressiveness if we don't it'd be a long night if we do then uh you know i like our chances and you know that's something like you said all the extracurricular i believe it's their homecoming i heard an ring ceremony and they're getting baseball yeah

018they're getting their rings so like you said you're gonna be you're gonna be behind the eight ball right off the bat so i have to come out once again quick and score in a hurry so offensively what are we expecting to see or i guess free briggs defense what are we going to be doing offensively well i mean you know we for us with having such a young team we do what we do we can't can't change a whole lot but uh what you're gonna see from their defense is what we always see from them they're gonna you know they're a seven in the box style of team they're designed to stop the run and uh they're gonna send guys all the time and they're gonna be aggressive they're gonna take chances so it opens

019them up for big plays there's an opportunity there for big plays if you can execute them you have enough time throw football you know we put in a few new formations and little gadgets i think this week that could lend itself to us but there's some big plays but again uh until you you still got to establish the line of scrimmage if you don't do that none of those plays work anyway so i i foresee uh uh i foresee it being a being a tough game but you know we were talking earlier about the stopping teams on fourth down and you don't like second long you know the most important down in the night for our team anyway i don't i think all the coaches think this way uh it's not when you convert on

020third down or when you stop a team on third down it's really first down first down's the biggest down in the game football in my opinion because if you can be faced with a second three a whole lot different than second ten or second eleven you stop the other team on the decent side of the ball and at second and ten or eleven for them rather than second four you know you've got them where you want because now you don't have a lot of plays in your playbook if you're hoping to get ten eight nine ten yards you know you want three or four yards so that'll be a big part of the game to uh to tomorrow night and their defense that is pretty solid i mean they gave up six in week one

021versus sparta 21 points first nashville uh then they gave up 40 and 20. so their defense like you said they do give up points but they do have the ability to not let up any points either so uh going to have our work cut out for him with the 11 game win streak like we said on the line the last loss came 13-7 loss in 2010. we were just talking we bid on a hitch and go late in the game and we had the ball at the two-yard line had a personal foul down there at the two we don't score we end up losing the game so these are free bird game it's always one play away from something changing and the outcome changing in the game so defensively coach germain got your work cut

022out for you typically at run heavy offense 308 yards out of their lead back with 34 carries 160 out of their secondary back but they got a couple guys who have getting 25 23 carries so seems like there's gonna be four guys that could get the ball at any given time yeah they've played you know four games just like we have and uh if you look at the stat sheet the quarterbacks passed the ball about 80 times and the running backs you know carried the ball 40 times they've got several running backs they've got a puff they've got they've got an abundance of kids who who rushed the ball for them it's going to come down to assignment football like it does every week all right i mean we've talked about this before alex and

023jared if the guys up front do their jobs and linebackers do their jobs in the secondary they've all got jobs to do you know we've got keys that we're going to key in on you know certain formations we're doing certain things but it's the ability to understand when they're in this look we've got to be in this level so we've got to give ourselves the benefit of the doubt that we're going to be in the right spots you know and if they're fast-paced hurry up quick tempo type team which i couldn't really tell on film if they're that way our kids are going to have to make sure we're in the right spot so it boils down to execution no different than on the offensive side it all starts with the guys up front doing

024their job and then that makes our linebackers and secretary's job a lot easier so what's your favorite coach warner favorite free bird moment out of 21 seasons now is there a pick two yep okay so probably 2003 would be my first one whenever we beat them at their place the first time we'd beat them in a long time with your brother's group uh and your cousin nick that that ranks up there but probably the best moment was the playoff game at home in a game that some would say we probably shouldn't have won but uh you know we pick up a big play get a uh get a fourth and short get him to jump offsides and then come up with a gadget play and ronnie hunsaker runs over a kid in the end zone

025to win it for us so that was probably my biggest moment coach g what do you got i would say 2008 both of those were right up there but i would say 2008 kind of like when the uh the defense scores three pick six is you know 20 points puts 20 21 points on the board for the uh for the offense and coach is kind of looking at me like i want a chance to play so yeah we had three pick sixes in that game uh that was pr that was pretty impressive in the first half yeah and both both teams were undefeated jared you got a favorite game right now your senior year i never really i never lost so they're all my favorite there you go i remember coach hoyner my senior year

026he came up to us we knew we were in a dog fight we knew that uh they were just massive across the line i think it's about the second half i looked at you you looked at me and you said i don't know what to do right now i've tried this i've tried that we ended up getting in the end zone um went seven nothing they scored luckily they didn't have a kicker made it seven six and then they had the ball within the 10-yard line late in the game and ben don't break mentality coach germain keeps them from getting in the end zone we win the game seven six and you know a win is a win we don't tackle we didn't keep them by the end no the kids the kids the kids

027did yeah but no yeah good yeah there's a lot of great memories um playing free burgers let's hope that we can make another good memory tomorrow night we were gonna be live tomorrow night at 6 30 once again we're gonna have a modified broadcast um we're gonna have we'll figure out how we're gonna have it's gonna be a modified broadcast but we will be live with the aces wild pregame show at 6 30 and coach fermin you got a shout out for a new fan we have two weeks ago my daughter works in the hospital here in the area and uh has a kid that our football team signed a helmet for and he's been watching us for the past two weeks so i just want to give a shout out to tony and we're

028all rooting for you buddy and hopefully everything works out well for you and we we appreciate your support and go eagles there you go well that's going to do it for us this week five coaches corner presented by houlton meats coach horner coach jermaine good luck tomorrow let's bring home another eagles victory and let's get above 500. thanks alex thanks alex thanks jared [Music] you
