001hey let's drive to shop here yes right here um oh let's go go go oh hey come here [Music] good [Music] to evening here at the columbia multi-purpose field we've got first responders night we've got highlighter night it looks like out in the student section and it's good to be back here at home and try to get it on the on the wind train here and see if we can get something rolling here for this season that's early here we've got the columbia eagles and the explorers of alton marquette both teams exploring for their first victory yes they are uh columbia coming off that last week waterloo loss not a very good uh score that columbia fans would like to see but you got you got to put that behind us and you got to

002move on to the next week that's the good thing about sports you get to hop off that loss last week you got a new night ahead of you here a beautiful night we're finally getting fall feel in the air last week or last time we were up here is 110 i think maybe that's a little bit high but it's got fall feel in the air you got sun starting to set right now and it's starting to feel like a good a good fall night for friday night football and i'm pretty excited hopefully we got a night here we can get a victory on on under our belt yeah i'm hoping so and you know these coaches they're they're not very used to being down at a 0-2 start so look forward to for these coaches

003to pump up a lot of these kids and um hopefully columbia will come out with a little more fire tonight fire's what we need we were just watching the guys here in pre-game and uh we saw something that didn't look too fire-ish to us and i don't know a lot of walking around yeah a lot of walking around so hopefully they've got about 20 minutes to get it figured out but a little bit of a shaky start for the eagles this year like jared said not used to being in this position it's first time we've been owen two since uh 2005 season where we finished the final record of three and five so uh not something we're used to doing coach horner not something he's used to doing last night when we talked in the

004uh holton meets coach's corner it was kind of tough for him to you know he was trying to find out what he wanted to say and it was just it was tough and it was an odd feeling and not something that we're used to and hopefully we don't have to be used to it but shaky starts or not you got to persevere and power through tonight yeah definitely and this program is so used to to just the w's every every week and every year and i think coach warner and coach germain have the right game plan and they'll have these guys ready tonight because that's what that's what all these columbia fans are hoping for so i think we'll be ready well it's easy for us to talk up here in the aces wild pregame

005show but you know they're gonna have to get it done here tonight and a little bit about last week coming off the 49-6 loss it's the largest lost deficit that the eagles have had and it comes at the six points is the fewest we've scored since the 2009 season we played central here at home um 16-6 a complete mud bowl and columbia you can see they're only at 234 yards of offense giving up 389 yards so you look at it though vaguely 17 for 29 156 yards the one pick that was a pick six early in the game and uh but it scores that touchdown for the 31-yarder to meghanson meganson leads with yardage four receptions for 60 yards missler reads with receptions six for 47. mcconaughey in there five rushes for 36 yards one

006big thing uh six different receivers with the reception so that's good that we're able to sling it around to different guys are on the field yeah and early in that game i mean i thought we were gonna stick with them for a little bit they their low line definitely looked a lot bigger waterloo's and they were a lot faster than us up front but i think if you have like you said if you have a couple more athletes out wide that can catch the ball having five or six guys that can put a lot of defenses in a bind and i think coach horner will go back to that drawing board tonight i hope so and defensively like we said gave up 389 yards coach germaine knew he was in a bit of a pickle

007waterloo's offensive line they were just bigger stronger faster they're meaner than us we've talked about that a little bit too you know they're putting up 389 yards and they did pretty much whatever they wanted to yeah 200 269 of it was on on the ground rushing so coach tremaine doesn't really like the sound of that giving up almost 300 rushing yards in a game that's something you don't hear much from columbia football but um hopefully tonight we see more of our linemen and linebackers get a little more action i mean don vagley led the team in tackles again with nine tackles so it'd be nice to see one of our big guys to step up i know we say it every week but it's kind of going to have to happen one of these weeks

008talked to coach warner last night too a little bit in that coach's corner and he had said that there was going to be a little bit of a switch it sounds like mcconaughey and vaguely might move up more towards linebacker role so you know that a little bit susceptible in the in the back half of the field but you know if those guys are going to come up and make a tackle now they're going to make a tackle three yards deep rather than seven yards yeah and that's that's huge for coach tremaine's defense because if you have some of these linebackers that are still make getting in the right spot but you have guys like vaguely and mcconaughey who are so much quicker on their feet and they just have a nose for the football

009so i think that could be a huge addition for the eagles defense like we had said tonight is first responders night we'd like to thank all of our first responders for uh going out putting their live on the line and when a lot of people are running out first responders are running in the columbia quarterback club this year donated 500 to the columbia police department two years ago donated to the ems last year donated to the fire department so pretty neat of the fire department or the quarterback club to donate to all the first responders so thank you to the columbia quarterback club and for everybody who supports the quarterback club and they just finished up their uh presentation of the check now so with all that being said we've recapped last week we've started

011brees centra freeburg i'm sorry up there at 2-0 they're at chester tonight and then you got bree central sitting at 1-1 at rad but so you look at those two teams you expect them to get a victory and then you got wood river roxanna and salem all sitting at 101 with nokomis civic memorial and harrisburg and then something that again we haven't said before columbia sitting at o-2 versus marquette so talked to coach horner last night he's like i said he expected chester or freyberg and brees to beat chester and redbud and then you get into the wood river nokomis game don't know too much about them but this new conference that we have in the conference standings you don't have a week off anymore like we used to there's a every week is going

012to be different and there's some with having new teams on your schedule that just makes it a little more difficult for the coaches and the players because you're going up against a personnel and a bunch of different things that you've never seen before so i think columbia is definitely going in the right direction with having different people on your schedule i think it makes makes the team look just i i don't know how to explain it but like whenever you play team's more of your higher up than you i think it's a lot looks better on your team makes it gets you ready for playoff time i agree with you there i mean you look at her non-conference 5a muscuda 5a waterloo i believe marquette here is a 4a school with the multiplier and then

013you go to 5a jerseyville late into the year so you know there's no more to a 3a games anymore and like you said that'll get you ready for week 10. now columbia though you lose two more games you might play in week 10 you might not you need to get that six and three to for sure solidify yourself in that week ten match up yeah and a lot of these guys uh have been never played varsity football like we said but these first two weeks they've got a couple couple games under their belt so uh tonight we're looking to see a lot more um aggressiveness and fire fireness out of the columbia eagles yeah you can't have that first snap anymore we talked earlier in the year you know these guys are playing their first

014varsity sample that was two games ago yeah that first varsity snaps out of the way yes it is you just got to be a man got to get it done and you got to be that guy that gets it done so conference standing wise though trying to get back into that and trying to don't give up too much ground yeah early into the season so i don't know how you're going to have to get it done but one way or another you got to get it done you talk about the new conference and totality though you've got the large division the medium division and the small division so large division still sits with columbia breeze and freeburg we pick up east alton wood river and roxanna salem was in the kokia conference already there that

015last team in the large division your medium division now carlisle chester oakville redbuds sparta westland and your small division dupo marisa new athens steelville lebanon valmeier now you look at that medium division oakville does not have a football program you look at the small division dupo does so dupo now bumps up and plays that medium division uh football schedule so yeah it's uh i talked to coach moore last night like i said in the halton meets coach's corner and he said scheduling-wise not too big of an issue especially for football everybody's just going to play each other once and then there's no inner conference games that you have to play so just a new look to the kokia conference you still have the mississippi division and the kaskaskia and then you just saw that other

016division which i like it a lot i like i think it makes it a lot tougher for teams and i think it's going to go be really good one thing i am going to mention we don't have ralph stone on the pa this anymore this year he gave his ten years i believe is what it was and now we have mr winter's coming back after he said eight seasons so he came back and he's going to do the season so i forgot how good his voice is oh you can hear the power in his voice definitely yeah and he's always like you were saying whenever he did the uh basketball lineups oh my gosh oh my gosh so coming into tonight we're about 12 minutes away from kickoff here chs versus the marquette explorers are

017one in three all time currently have that one game win streak here with coach hoyner going 1-0 last street last year was a 35-14 victory for the eagles and that had marquette going two and four for the season so they've got that big play ability that coach warner was talking about so it's going to be something where that our defensive backs and we have to limit those big plays yeah and you've got to contain the athletes coach coach germain and coach warner have talked about it all year if a team offense has one or two athletes you got to key in on those guys and guys up front have to be ready tonight i think up front we've looked a lot slower than usual and we've looked just a step behind so tonight i'm hoping

018to see the the front line work a little harder and push us to a w they're coming off the week one loss i'm saying uh marquette week one loss i think it was 48-10 um so they give up the points and then 48 20 or 40 to 21 last week to say so we're both in the same spot right now we're both giving up a lot of points they're putting up a little bit more than us so it's uh every team's exploring for that first victory so hopefully the eagles can fly a little higher tonight oh i like what you did there there you go that was nice that was nice so what are your expectations for tonight well up front like i said i think that's going to be the biggest thing i'm hoping

019for the eagles to come out 21.8 um but like i said it's going to all have to start up front so you're saying 21-8 your prediction for tonight i'm gonna go 35-14 i think we're going to get it rolling we're gonna get the offense going hopefully we can get them down in a hurry get their heads down rather than getting our heads down and keep putting it on them a little bit more and hopefully we have those big plays coach horner said without giving too much away he goes we're gonna start out pretty quick tonight so hopefully we're able to get that done and uh and something last week also um that we saw a lot of week one was the penalties there was not as many penalties as there was in week one and

022to play on turf that shows how old we were talking earlier we say that the eagles are the first time they're on two since the 2005 season and i asked jared i said how old were you then he was i was six so you're probably a water boy yeah i was probably down there on the field running water around now you did that with the horner boys correct yes sir all right we will send it here in a bit send it to the band for the national anthem good crowd here again for the columbia eagles once again everybody's on the fence line marquette didn't travel the best but they do have a couple people over in the stands with them columbia's going to come out blue tops blue bottoms and the white helmets with the

024coin toss just so we know what's going on looks like coach kendall's out there getting kick return team ready might be the kicking team it is the kicking team kicking team so columbia will kick off to get this game going and gotta get a little excitement here and the fans and the stands and the cheerleaders and when it starts out on the field if the guy on the field is excited that's going to push it off to the sideline to the cheerleaders cheerleaders to the fans so somebody's going to have to give somebody some excitement here tonight and it's going to start with the opening kick let's see if we can get it back deep and pin them back into the into their own territory pretty deep and something that surprised me this year is

025uh dom vaguely uh his the leg that he's got on him some of these punts and kicks that we've seen um this year by him it just shows he's a great athlete and he can do pretty much anything that the coaches ask of him explorers are going to send three guys back number 13 number five kick to the right side of the field that will be caught by number 13 he's going to take it up the middle of the field there's a little bit of a seam tries to spin out of a tackle and it's going to be brought down by number 34 though for the eagles so jared what do you have for your three keys today i think coming off an o and two start you gotta come out pumped up um you

026can't be down on yourselves you gotta come out and just put those previous weeks behind you and finally i wanna see a linebacker alignment like i stated earlier in the pregame show lead to lead the game in tackles um we've seen dom vaguely the first two weeks lead the team and tackles both games so let's see one of the big guys step up for a week columbia switching to a 4-3 look here four down lineman it's going to be a fake hand off kept by the quarterback he's not going to get anywhere looks like none other than number 65 owen brewer that's something that we're going to have to keep doing all night stuff it up in the middle and force him to throw the ball around a little bit so our athletes can make

027plays but great job there on first down to push them push them back a yard and a half start with a second and 11. [Applause] that's one thing last week getting them back into the negative hard situations that's something huge that we need to be able to do and throw them off their game and be the same formation for the eagles sniffer back to the right pistol back would be the running back he's going to take the hand off run to the right side one man's going to miss and it's going to be about a six yard game like you said jared arm tackle two yards deep then it can't get anything looked like jay messer was right there in the right spot just didn't get his head across where the guy was running to

028and that's something we've seen a lot of this year with the eagles a lot of these safeties and linebackers come up and they'll lay a big hit on you they're just not wrapping up and you're allowing these running backs and quarterbacks to get loose and gain extra yards third down and six [Applause] here for the explorers from their own 46-yard line gonna be the same formation for everybody pistol back is running back he's gonna draw it's gonna be a pass play to the right side and it's gonna fall incomplete intended for number seven that's gonna be a three and out for the eagles defense great first stride there by the eagles defense on first down whenever on first down if you push them back a little bit that puts your offense in a bind because

029then when you have a second and 12 second and 11 and you don't get any yards there then that puts you in a tough third down spot so great job there to start off hot on the defensive side of the ball and hopefully we can see mcconaughey give us a good little run here to give us some good good yardage good position mcconaughey sure is fun to watch on kickoffs and kick the turns let's see him have a little bit of magic here on the punt return might not get to touch it gonna be a good punt it's going to be received at 22. he's going to make some moves gonna try to get up the middle of the field he's gonna get probably a good 10-15 yards and the eagles will take over from

030their own 38-yard line so let's see this off and see what they can do this week and get last week we saw a little bit on that uh first couple drives vaguely was able to throw a couple slants a couple of out routes to his receivers and threw some great passes to his receivers and megan connected with megan said on what was it a 26 27 yard touchdown pass across the middle on a slant see what we open up in here sniffer back right pistol back is mcconaughey it's going to be a quick hit drop to the left side meganson's going to make the catch he's going to get nine he's going to get close to 10 and i think he's going to get 10. good for columbia eagles first down and just off that

031first play i'm seeing these corners playing off six seven yards and all megan did there was run a little three four yard hitch route turn right around and vaguely put the ball right in his hands and get good yards after catch there pick up the eagles first down tonight same formation once again four down night before the marquette explorers columbia's going to go temple it's going to be hand off he's going to try to get to the edge he's going to stiff on one man he's going to get another 11 yards and that's going to be good for another eagles first down so that's not going to mean anything look at jay missile he said come on coach let's go let's go let's do it pretty good open field tackle there by uh number five

032though we mechanically got them wheels and he could have busted it up field but five was right there to push him out of bounds let's change it of course chains are just now moving got the same chain gang that you always call out every week start we had a week off same formation for the eagles four down alignment three linebackers for the explorers gonna be another hour on that deep corner he's gonna make one man miss and he's gonna have four guys bring him down three plays 33 yards three first downs and basically just give giving that to you and then whenever you want the corner to come press up that's when you run right by him and throw a little go route right over his head so coach horner's great play calling right now

033by coach horner to get the ball in meganson's hands and get the get their athletes in the flat and make make some good plays columbia's got it on the explorer's 30-yard line we're going to go hard count don't get anybody to jump sounds like coach hunter is making a switch at the line of scrimmage gonna get a handoff to the right side mechanic he's gonna fumble it a little bit but he's gonna keep it he's gonna get about five or six standing up pretty straight whenever he made i'm liking this flow and tempo of this offense right now we haven't seen it at all this year we've been all out of sorts all out of whack so it's good to see a complete drive and hopefully we can finish it off with a touchdown here

034empty field right now we've got hicks as a tight end sniffer back is going to be muscle it's going to be a straight run to the right side with dominic vaguely he's going to lower the shoulder get the boom get the first down and enter into the red zone it's a new formation we haven't seen before i like that play just get it in your in your best players hands and put your head down and run we've seen it i know we've talked about it every week but you've seen it with these quarterbacks that we've had over the past if you can just get the ball in their hands put their head down and run behind these lead blockers i mean you'll get six seven yards for play if these guys are blocking right and

035everybody's hitting the right holes and gaps good blocking they had a pretty good wall there for vaguely and he took it to the right side sniffer back to the right side running back him to the right side we're gonna run it to the left he's gonna cut back up to the middle gonna gain a couple yards don't do anything to screw it up your pistol back behind quarterback on mcveigh gonna fake the hand off dom's gonna keep it he's gonna make one man miss great block there by mistler it's gonna be good for another five yards good job james will stick it with your block that's just straight rpo right there you see vaguely faking the handoff to mcconaughey he's reading that defensive end or that outside linebacker he goes with mcconaughey he's pulling it

036up he's giving it up great job there by vaguely to read that play and pull the ball and get a couple 55 this week is brandon jackson he comes on to the field as saigon comes off they're gonna go heavy heavy heavy for this third down and three from explorers eight on the opening drive for the eagles moving down the field bigly under center turns around he hands it off to the right side face mask [Applause] gives up on the play because his helmet ripped off going to be good for an eagles first down so being as his helmet falls off typically that means he's got to come off but i thought since it was for a face mask coach kendall out trying to fix the helmet so that's going to bring up the first

037down and the goal for the eagles we'll take it brandon jackson [Applause] it'll be half the distance to the goal first down and goal from the four 740 remaining on the pulley pharmacy on the scoreboard here at columbia's multi-purpose field sniffer back right tight end right running back in a run to the right he's going to run into his tight end and hicks and kaneki keeps his feet moving still got his feet moving he's got himself into the one-yard line nearly to the end zone looked like his knee almost touched around the two or three that's what i thought too it was just too quick that i guess the reps can't even see that great job by mcconaughey keeping his feet moving i like seeing that he ran right back in the power back but

038he looked good there and he ran right in the back of carter hicks right whenever he got the ball so he brings up second down and goal from the one [Applause] punching eagles heavy heavy heavy [Applause] that first time we did heavy somebody missed the block and they had linemen in the backfield in a hurry but that doesn't matter we're into the end zone this time touchdown eagles [Music] great job there jared on that opening drive getting into the end zone best drive all season oh absolutely great job getting into the end zone and starting this like coach when he said we're going to start with a bang didn't have one play go for negative yards either and it is good [Applause] in the backfield in a hurry but that doesn't matter we're into the

039end zone this time touchdown eagles [Music] basically walk into the end zone for the eagles first touchdown of the night [Applause] so that takes the score columbia seven east alton [Applause] marquette zero andy mcguire's scoreboard we do play them later here don't worry assault river we do play them yeah i'm ahead of myself for three weeks [Applause] so great job by the defense 473 great job by the eagles offense getting down the field i believe we started that about the 35 minutes a good drive there for columbia team remaining in the first quarter [Music] kick will be caught at the 18 this time on the left side of the field number two is going to try to reverse the field and he's not going to get anywhere he gets into the grips of number four

040sam denny and he's not going to let him go [Applause] see him danny great job there just fly down the field and that's all coach kendall really asked for on the kickoff team guys that are not scared to fly down the field hit a couple guys and make big plays because special teams goes a long way when you really think about it i mean p-a-t's you got punts and kick-offs can help a lot on the field position so great job there to stop him around the 30-yard line [Applause] we've said sam denny's name a lot he moved back to the safety position with this switch of mcconaughey and vaguely at linebacker going to be a straight hand off to number two he's going to run to the right side he's going to get through a

041couple guys and he's going to get lit up looks like one thing we have seen a couple times this year and i just saw it on that play our defensive end underneath going to hand the ball off again same play to the right side going to be sniffed out by the eagles and a great tackle by brandon jackson [Applause] man it feels like i'm in a college game with this announcement let us know where you're listening from we've had a couple texts already former trainer james evans guess this is a good way to watch my first home game from home in over a decade man i bet that feels weird shout out to you know where you're coming from and let's see if we can give you a shout out third down and eight we'll

042call it four alton from their own 31-yard line gonna fake the handoff gonna be a pass down the middle of the field it's gonna be nearly intercepted oh brandon jackson right here again good coverage there by jackson and denny was about half a step away from getting a pick right there and setting us up with good feeling and that's something that is very difficult for these linebackers because sometimes when you have to guard these slot receivers obviously they're probably going to be a little bit quicker than you and they're probably going to get down the field a little faster than you so great job by jackson to stay with his slot receiver and kind of keep a hand on block the him come up at the fourth down eagles get the ball back mcconaughey had

043the good return on the first punt let's see if he can do it again as he's standing at his own 31-yard line punk gets off it's going to be a side-spinning punt gonna be muffed by mcconaughey he's gonna pick it up and he's not gonna have anywhere to go but he's still on his feet he fell on top of the defender he made a man miss he had two man miss and now he's gonna get brought down at the 40 with the face which way he's gonna go it's like a video game tackler there almost made that tackle but mcconaughey fell on top of them there must be something in them controlling they had in pregame from tiniest times must be getting them that extra juice okay what if it works we might have to

044do that again let's keep these drives going get this second drive let's see if we can cap it off with another touchdown see if this offense can keep it moving so that's a 15 yard penalty so it started instead of starting at their own we will start at the explorer's 45-yard line [Applause] trips to the right side into the boundary vaguely he's going to look to the left side he's got mcconaughey open to the left side he's going to have a jump on it's going to be caught incomplete by mcconaughey great read by don great ball by dom just good defense on those double double moves it's especially with a guy like mcconaughey who is coming out of the backfield there you have that backside corner who's guarding the running back so that's that's kind

045of tough as a cornerback to notice the running back as if he's going to pass block if he's if he's just going to stand there um a great job there by the defense to be aware of the number 21 coming out of the backfield and making a good play tight end left running back left running back pistol back as well there's going to be a pass play this time they're going to give it to him he's going to stiff on one man and he's going to get brought out of bounds at the 30. good for another columbia eagles first down there's no one in the flat we're giving it to you run that same play i love this so far going that deep play there we're taking what they're giving us but then we're going

046to look at that deep ball good job by coach horner i like let's keep taking some chances deep i'm saying here comes a vaguely vaguely going to take the ball and he's going to run with it here trips to the left side vaguely he's going to run the ball to the left side he's going to have to have some good stalk good job by mcconaughey as this guy fought off of him that's going to be a good six yard run look like mcconaughey was kind of pushing him to the outside and he wanted vaguely to kind of cut it up right behind his back and vaguely kept going outside still gained up about five yards second and five vaguely averaging 3.2 yards of carry 55 yards rushing on the season on 17 attempts a little

047bit of a speed number though because those socks go down it's like tight end left this time we're gonna fake it's gonna be a bootleg to the right it's gonna be a quick dump route to jay missler who makes the play and great job jay fighting for another columbia eagles first down as we enter into the red zone once again coach horner is pulling everything out of his playbook right now i mean he's throwing the ball a little bit he's getting the ball mcconaughey's hands on the run he's spreading the feel out and making vaguely just run wherever he wants to go so all marquette defense kind of on their heels right now they're just keep backing up 335 remaining on the corey pharmacy scoreboard here at the columbia multi-purpose field there we go going

086remember playing blue jays below me like they were like three or four years younger than me so it's just now it's so weird seeing some of these guys like play high school football and um whenever i used to watch him back in blue jay days like i remember london little like he already graduated and he in blue jays he was scoring like seven eight touchdowns a game and now he's already graduated so it just shows you like time goes fast and columbia football i mean they keep you ready for years to come i mean they get you going from kindergarten and they keep you ready all the way till your freshman year and i think that's a very special thing about columbia football as as a whole program and the blue jays and eagles always

087just being a being a great program talking to coach horner last night in the holton meets coach's corner and he said you know you're only guaranteed nine games at this point of the season you know and now you're only guaranteed seven so he was that was the message he said he was trying to portray to the kids you know you might think we have all the time in the world but these tonight's quick yeah and i believe in uh the boys at fall music video i think they say that sean payton he goes they go by they go by they'll go by so and all those i mean all those summers and all those i mean all the times you hate waking up at six in the morning to come up here and run sprints

088and lift weights and just run practice against your own guys um but i mean i know me and you could probably both say it ourselves i would go back any day and just to come out here on a thursday practice and then get ready for a friday night game like it's just something everybody every football kid dreams about so yeah i'll come out on the thursday afternoon yeah there's thursday afternoon uh practices were pretty laid back and those those monday afternoons when you're running spirit sprints and for anybody that doesn't know 40 yard sprint jog back 40 yard spin jog back 50 yard sprint drop back all the way down to 100 yeah and i always thought the sprint was the easy part it was that jog back that killed dude and when it got

124some time out and coming up and talking to us this is one of my favorite things to do we're not lying what did we do this about four or five years ago we had you up here well we had we got bench last year we didn't do the show so i would say a couple years before that yeah before that so yep for sure well you're getting a lot of tv time now i mean you go from fox 2 this morning to now you're here so i mean you're getting all sorts of tv time if you want we can flip that camera around we put it on no no no no no no no all right no man well if you're going to do something people got to know about it so you got to

125get out there and do it and you have an awesome organization and like we were just talking you know you can't get to where you are today without getting out and people helping so hopefully here everybody's listening get a little help and we'll start off let's go back 20 years ago yeah you said you were sitting in class on september 11th and it's funny i mean i was in second grade whenever it happened i was gonna ask that you you know exactly where you were i can tell you i was in ms worsham's class but go back to september 11th of 2001. i remember it being like a very nice day i was a senior columbia here at columbia high school i graduated that following year 2002 and i had just signed my army contract

126in june 2001. so i was i had signed it three months before the attacks had happened and i was doing this thing called the delayed entry program so your senior year counts towards the year of your enlistment right so you join and your parents got to sign off and but i was just thinking this is great just reserves it's not gonna be a big deal it'll be fine you know and then i remember coming out of uh probably whatever first hour was walking into mr nail's class who's taught government class funny enough and he just had this like ghost look on his face looking up at the tv monitor when when they were remember the box tv monitors that were mounted like watch channel one on channel one yeah wow and so uh anyways um

127he's like hey guys just sit down i mean it was like a movie and then so we were sitting there watching this the building on fire one building thinking well it it seems like that that could happen a plane could hit a building by accident and in real time bam the second one and i remember thinking what did i sign up for just right because this just changed dramatically and sure enough it did and graduated high school did basic training and within gosh i was only 19 when i got to iraq i guess wow turned 20 over there so that sends you into the e4 specialist role in the army when you're over in iraq yep we've talked before and different stories that you have and some of them i mean yeah we don't have

128to jump into them right now but some of the stories that you got thank you for doing all of that stuff and one of the guys that you met over there was one of your buddies and matt maupin yep and he was a pow yeah bmw over there and he's kind of one that helped spear into songs for soldiers pretty much i mean you know when when i was over there uh unfortunately i was in one of the worst attacks on a supply convoy the history of iraq or afghanistan wars and um we we escorted fuel convoys and uh we ran into about 250 insurgents and um just got completely picked apart you know i was only one out of six trucks to make it through it and i was the only truck without dead

129or wounded in it and so um but matt was a couple trucks behind me and uh we lost him to be honest with you we just got the kill zone was huge and we all got pinned down and so a very few of us made it through it and yeah he was the first pow that iraq wore and so um unfortunately an execution video appeared three months later and uh but it wasn't conclusive enough to say it was him and they didn't have his body so it wasn't until 2008 three years after we were home a raid turned up his remains in a you know shallow grave so um yeah that whole experience man you know and then getting through all that unscathed and coming home to a good family and a good job right

130away i just like no most veterans don't have that when they get back you know and so that's what kind of got me going towards the route of this and then eventually it all just kind of snowballed into 2013 starting songs for soldiers but yeah i mean what happened to matt was a big thing his families they fly in for the concert here to columbia every year so um yeah it's it's a big part of the story for sure yeah so now we have the maupin challenge that you do every year so yeah we we created he was he was a really fit dude and so we created a crossfit workout they call them hero workouts they just did one for officer hopkins as well and we submitted it to in his name and we

131made it symbolic with the dates and everything and uh crossfit that's my daughter uh crossfit headquarters in columbus ohio adopted it as an official hero workout so it's in there it's an official crossfit workout now and people do it all over the country man i've had calls from new york hawaii santa monica uh england like so people just pick it and do it man so yeah and it's all for something that you started and that's that's awesome to say that you're worldwide yeah well the whole point of it all doing that workout and raising money doing our concert and raising money is we take 100 of it and 100 of our donations and we've what we've done in the last eight years is we just help combat veterans on a daily basis with whatever it

132is they're facing um as you can imagine after eight years we've run into everything but here we are we've spent over seven hundred thousand dollars on over 600 families now in eight years so so let's talk concert before the second half oh yeah we gotta go yeah we gotta talk football now i could sit up here and talk to you for days but i mean we're winning 48 to zero should we just keep talking it's gonna be we got a running clock here in the second half so it could be a little bit quicker so we're gonna get through right and uh we'll power through this but let's talk concert september 17th gates open for josh turner josh turner is coming to town yeah see the graphic here on the screen where are you guys

143raise money for different organizations and different charities and stuff like that as well [Applause] so just on that as far as raising money make sure you're coming out to all the fish fries at columbia days and good friday the fire department knows has their their fish fries as it's going to be a first down after the penalty same formation once again same play once again this time the quarterback's going to try to run to the right side he's not going to get anywhere as brendan white comes up steps up to make the play with joe kish as brandon and joe kish make the tackle and it looked like sean horn was in there as well so yeah make sure you come up you're getting to the fish fries helping the fire department they help you

164i mean from the from the start i mean that our offense was had something in mind tonight or up front they definitely looked a lot faster and they looked like they knew what where they were supposed to be and it just looked like our athletes were able to make a little bit more plays than they were tonight and our defense i think like we said earlier that scheme that we got in now with vaguely and mcconaughey coming up making tackles a little earlier than they're used to i think that that makes a huge difference on the defensive side of the ball but overall i think the offensive defensive line deserves the mvp for tonight vaguely had pretty much a lot of time to throw and mcconaughey was finding any lane and the defensive line was
