really did a great job in trying to recognize you know the senior class obviously the eighth grade also the fourth grade promotions I mean you know I mean it definitely took a little bit of creativity on everybody's part and uh and that I think was well appreciated I you know I also think that the communication that was put out by the building principals the superintendent tap into it it was it was very well done it was very well him everyone knows I'm a big communication person and it was handled it was everybody knew what was going on at least not from what I understand at the high school level and middle school level so the communication was was very good well it was the FSA's they you know the principal's whomever it was getting the

Shaw all right mrs. day yes the meeting is open to the public for comment on items on or off the agenda hey there's one person who'd like to make a comment give me just one second to find you and I will unmeet you Sam and I'm just using your name cuz that's how it's coming up in the chat hold on just one second and me a second here a second there's different names here here we go alright Sam I am going to unmute you if you could please state your first and last name and your address and then you can proceed thank you when you say dressed like my dress home address right oh you cut
out like home address yes yes all right cool this is Samuel I'm a tow bar my home address is 41 hilltop Drive Cedar Grove New Jersey zero seven zero zero nine great thank you welcome thanks for joining us thank you okay let me introduce myself so hi my name is Sam and as an alum its own saw his family in the school district I'm concerned about the lack of diversity and inclusion education in our curriculum give him light to an email shared by the current a current student in Cedar Grove high school I wanted to read a letter that I had sharing my experiences and concerns so Fong is dear mr. Michael Featherman miss Christine died on the faculty of the Cedar Grove School District has come to my attention that students have been actively
bullying and harassing people of color through social media and school emails in regard to the recent email that was sent in on the morning of May 29th the students of the faculty to the students of the faculty in Cedar Grove High School Shannon Berlin was not the first nor will be the last students who experienced racial discrimination in the school in their lifetime as a person of color and so heartbreaking - I read her experiences and given like - the political climate I'm not standing on say anything I could remember crying in elementary school because the children will not associate with me because I was had a Tanner complexion I wish every day I was white so that people would like me I was bullying for bringing quote-unquote ethnic food shamed for not liking American
music and attacked for speaking Spanish to my mother while she helps serve lunch at the other with the other FSA moms people yell at me to quote-unquote stop speaking Mexican because we live in the United States my family did not immigrant to this immigrated to this country seeking for a better future for me to be disrespected by white people in middle school people tell me go back to my own country ask me if I had to add was a police officer to smuggle drugs and claimed my mother was a stripper because she was younger than most parents when I spoke up to teachers I was immediately dismissed and nothing was addressed I stood by and see my fellow black and brown classmates being called the n-word monkeys terrorists and much worse floors during high school
I was referred to as quote unquote one of the good ones and not smelly like the rest of the illegals people would openly say offensive things to one another and not a single faculty member corrected their behavior his school suspension was a place with other bigots faculty included to share their thoughts and talk quickly about other minorities quote from a CJ chess teacher that haunts me every day is that if an Indian person were not bored to wear jeans in a sombrero I would probably think they were Mexican too not only is that statement incorrect and ignorant but after disagreeing with them no one stood up for me when I and other classmates asked him why we didn't learn about the history regarding other people of color and the lgbtq+ community he replied and I
quote oh because that's not important the discrimination experience naturally and especially in Cedar Grove is because the school system fails to acknowledge other prc's besides Martin Luther King jr. Rosa Parks and Malcolm X another alumni has been a token black person that everyone worships because he was great at football but we fail to acknowledge the other POC alumni in their accomplishments although I do not speak on behalf of all the people of color I can say that we were tired of the discrimination being gaslighted and needed to advocate for ourselves the education system is broken at the foundation we need diversity curriculum intertwined with all of our classes need to celebrate all cultures and not rely on students to educate each other I'm not asking for a diversity class or just another black person in
the district but an over reconstruction of the entire education system white people will never understand the experiences of people of color and I would never want another humans undergo what I and the rest of the students of color of experienced I might not have all the answers but I know change needs to occur from people have color understand racism at the age of six while white people have to wait until they're quote-unquote mature to learn about it if my family can have mature conversations of me about the sad reality of life and so can the rest of the student body one email one class or online modules can't fix this issue it has to be ingrained into the young people that all lives matter and that we have discussions regarding the current political situations and
educate people on microaggressions covert racism bigotry and other forms of prejudice don't leave her tragedy to start thinking of solutions I had sent this letter to the Board of Education the principal's Vice Principals and the HIV counselor and I've received no response at communication with other alumni many of us have spent similar emails sharing our experiences and we've received no responses however only two white women acting as allies received a brief email quote-unquote thanking them for their feedback while we've seen little to no concrete actions regarding these topics there was a diversity including diversity and hardness initiatives that was implemented in the school system and none of those addressed any of the plans regarding diversity and inclusion as we created our network of alumni and a petition circulating within the community and I've offer some
solutions to the problems to the school district I like to give space to my team members Caroline and Brianna to further discuss what we have accomplished and hope to see in the future thank you Sam hi I'm Carolyn Maxwell my address is 67 Elmwood Road um can you hear me I can thank you okay so hello my name is carolyn maxwell and i am a white alumni of Cedar Grove School District you're speaking on behalf of a collective alumni concerned about diversity issues within the school district you're worried about the overall inclusion and want are currently taking action on several points as Sam mentioned we have already curated a position which has accrued over a thousand signatures in just one week from students and alumni students alumni in Cedar Grove residents as a group we
are working on a list of curricular changes we want to see at every grade level sending out a survey to teachers to measure inclusion efforts within the classroom and collecting testimonials of students and alumni who have experienced discrimination within Cedar Grove School District you're also spreading awareness for this issue over social media I'm gonna give space for Brianna to speak now hi my name is Brianna I live at 1:06 Stevens Avenue in Cedar Grove I made 2016 graduate of Citigroup high school and today I'd like to read to you the seven main points we have on our petition we'll be sure to share the petition with the Board of Education at the end of this meeting we ask that you consider the following actions implement implementation of anti-racist pedagogy by means of including authors of
color artists of color histories of oppression and other critical works at all levels of education students must learn about the legacies of indigenous genocide slavery wealth accumulation segregation immigration and war in the United States they must also learn about the histories of resistance and organizations led by black communities and other marginalized peoples the implementation of anti-racist pedagogy would be a concerted continuous effort anti racism should not be limited to an annual talk it should be a part of a student's daily learning experience it should include the racist segregationist eree of New Jersey and Essex County and how it continues in today's local and political geography provide professional development for staff and teach students about intersectionality theory in order to promote inclusivity and a greater understanding of privilege hi we new superintendent committed to anti-racist pedagogy
and creating a more inclusive school environment training faculty on recognizing their own implicit biases and on taking responsibility for correcting students who commit micro or macro aggressions or promote racist behavior in the classroom an active attempt to hire and train more black Latin X indigenous and POC teaching staff development of a series of take-home suggestions for members of our community hoping to teach their children about racism the one that we would like to emphasize to you today is the issue of hiring a superintendent I know that you are currently in the process of hiring a superintendent so I want to stress the importance of asking tough questions about initiatives that they will implement to combat racism homophobia and other other forms of discrimination in the school district the superintendent sets the tone for the rest
of the school district so it is imperative that you consider these issues we are not prepared today to present the exact curricular changes that we want to see in the school district I am asking for time on the agenda at the next Board of Ed meeting to present the changes we want to see we challenge you to also come up with ideas for more inclusive education during this time hopefully together we can work to create a better future for Cedar Grove Thank you Thank You Brianna and Thank You Carolyn and thank you Sam mr. Federman did you want to address them and I think you're still unmuted yes I I would like to say it is a topic near and dear to my heart and one that I would like to comment on for starters
Sam and Carolyn Breanna I can thank you for your courage and stepping forward speaking to elected officials and community members about this difficult topic and considering anything less than a difficult topic would be misunderstanding what's going on in this country and around the world as an educator myself for 27 years I too have seen and heard inappropriate inappropriate reaction inappropriate levels of support too much people standing by and doing nothing about endemic racism the sneaky stuff that lurks beneath the surface of of our schools communities cultures and as someone who stands together with complete disdain for for the ignorance and folks inability to appreciate our similarities and rather focus on surface differences drives me has driven me crazy well my entire educational career so I stand with you and I'm eager to assist in transitioning
this district into these conversations prior to my departure in August and so some of the thought that I had in terms of what needs to be done no surprise run parallel to the things that is Sam and Caroline and and new Breanna has conventions we need to elicit student parents and community input period post-op before we can act locally and in a manner that we can we can have people moving forward with us because I can tell you from my experience over the years if there's nobody following you nothing not going to work and so we must approach this in a manner where we listen we take the time to try to understand the perspectives of others in the room in our schools in our community it's terribly disappointing to hear Sam you know cite
instances where you felt unsafe unprotected in our school district the more I said and many other sent in defense of so many staff that I've worked with over the years it's intolerable I'm not going to use the phrase well there's a new bad apples it doesn't apply here what we're talking about is a much much greater presence of people's inability to understand what's at stake here in terms of a child feeling whole and feeling as though his race his his orientation has meant something to the world in the community they live in and it's time it does stop just so going beyond looking student power and community feedback we need to commit to a full audit of our curriculum ensuring inclusive and diverse perspectives and voices are heard we've been hearing this for years a
new jersey credit we've got the amistad Commission you've got the Holocaust Commission now we're moving into the lgbtq+ set of standards and lesson plans we are required to embed within our curricula effective this fall this shall be done here in C or Grove the value to that the power of enlightenment the power to make folks of diverse backgrounds within our classrooms feel as though it was though to know as though their ancestors have contributed to our society to our world caramel helping folks understand that the kids sitting next to them that doesn't look exactly like they do it's just as important as they are that in my view is what these new standards but these new efforts for lesson planning that will mean baked with in Marion curricula will do for us I go further
we need to eliminate materials in our courses that don't reflect our commitment to this endeavor that's no easy task we're talking about a heavy lift here it won't be done overnight but we must commit to it what else long as the day we don't always get it right and they know that I know that so professional development must be the cornerstone of more equitable more culturally responsive teaching period we need to expand school and district committees and deal with this issue of equity and social justice we will do that we need to further our dialogue we need to expand our circle of influence in partner with folks across the county state to secure resources and materials to provide our school community with the ability to address these topics including social injustice systemic racism civic responsibility
and civil rights at the end of the day I as a representative of the Cedar Grove School District pledged that we are steadfast in our belief of inclusivity diversity acceptance and equity for all students do we hit that mark every day I don't believe we do we have work to do but we're not going to throw the baby out with the bathwater either we've got great people here among us that believe as Sam and Carolyn and Briana and myself do and those are the folks they're going to bring others into their circle of that I am sure we know moving forward ask ourselves the tough questions and answer them honestly so we can better serve every member of our learning community our mission as educators cultivate environment in which each student is respected and valued
and we should not stop until we've achieved that mission thank you thanks mr. Federman I appreciate it I just wanted to add as mr. feather and was talking about adding adding committees we've talked about it and the board will be forming a diversity and inclusion committee and I'm not exactly sure right now how this committee is gonna work but at a high level it's going to address and talk about those conversations that mr. Featherman talked about in terms of curriculum and programs and MPD and also hiring and you know we'll have a this committee a little more formalized after you know we have our new late leader in place because I think you know as we as we move forward and we want to make change I think our our new superintendent should be really
be part of that change and not playing catch-up so as a board we've worked very hard in our search to try to find someone with a diverse background who will be able to assist us you know in these efforts and and we really have we've asked those hard questions and we've given different scenarios and I'm not gonna say exactly what we've asked I really think we've done a good job and we've really focused on the issue of diversity and inclusion so just bear with us in our search and we hope to to be able to announce something soon but in the meantime we still have mr. Featherman for another 49 days but who's counting so it looks like mr. Cannella would like to speak so I'm going to unmute him so give me just one
second [Music] we've been talking about today and that is going to address these problems and I really appreciated I am so sorry that you have had that experience and that others like you have had to had that experience 15 years ago I understand I see you when I hear that story that you told it breaks my heart I think you know exercising this right is important and so we asked for a review of district Ritalin and we asked for you know we also pledged resources time to help you know to bring voices together and so and um thank you Thank You mr. Cannella appreciate your comments I'm just looking to see in the chat if anyone else would like to make a comment I think somebody was trying to ask to be made presenter by
accident and we're not making anybody presenter so does anybody else would anybody else like to make a comment before I close that portion of the meeting there might be some people on the line I'm not sure I don't know how we would handle that if we can only do it through a computer so what I can do is I can unmute everyone and if you want to say something just say I'd like to make a make a statement and I will call on you so we can we can do it that way if they are muted and can't say anything so give me one second and I am unmute everyone so give me a moment okay everyone should be unmuted so would anyone else like to make a comment moment okay seeing none I'm going
to close that portion of the beating I'm going to mute everyone again and then I'm going to unmute our board members so just bear with me one moment I just I actually wanted to make a comment Oh short I'm sorry can you say you're I'm sorry I didn't see her I just saw your note just now if you could state your name and address please I'm so sorry it's Leslie Andrews 11 I'm so mild that was my home address as a child sorry 35:35 upland Way in cedar brew okay go ahead I just want to just say real quickly first of all on my heart totally broke hearing Sam's experience Sam that makes me so sad and I kudos to you and to Carolyn and to Brianna for speaking up and putting this together and
setting this forth I think it's super important I embrace all the principles that you've discussed and I just want to point out I mean I think it's important in terms of considering minorities also religious minorities so you know in our town I would say it's mostly Christian or Catholic I am Jewish and this is gonna sound small but when I went back to back-to-school night at the high school and my husband's not Jewish so we do celebrate Christmas and enjoy it but I am Jewish but I went to back-to-school night and I just noticed that it really struck me that every single hot Sun seemed like every single hallway was full filled with Christmas decorations and that was it and it I just felt it I really felt it I felt like you know not
totally included and I imagined how someone who's Muslim or Hindu must feel - and I don't want to take away from celebrating the holidays but you know just it kind of reminded me that Cedar Grove there's a tendency I think to just assume we're all the same and we're not and maybe just consider including you know being open minded about presenting discussion about other religions or having decorations you know relating to Judaism or Hinduism or muslimism so that was just what I wanted to say and but I mean I do love this town I really enjoyed the education my three kids have gotten I am so impressed with what's happening right now and and mr. father man I so appreciate everything you've just said and that's that's just the point I wanted to make thanks
Leslie we appreciate okay okay I'm not quite closing that part of the meeting yet because we do have somebody else would like to make a comment just give me one second I just want to make sure I didn't miss anybody above you okay so one moment Mayra Medina you'd like to make a comment yes I live on 76 Old Orchard quarry I actually was coming in to say certain things but I actually wanna say thank you to Sam Kalen viana because they actually did the job for me and I want them to know as well that I I am definitely grateful for them to be part of this meeting because they actually like I really do hope that everyone here on this call really listened to what they had to say because they definitely presented
our at least my message as a parent to you guys and I really do hope that the change is coming so I want to say thank you to all three of you I appreciate all three of you and I thank you deeply deeply deeply for all that you have said today that's it thank you thank you very much and I just want to say I mean a special thank you to everyone who made comments and and especially you know to Sam and and Carolina and to Briana it's not easy to come up and and and say obviously if you've had issues and that's part of the thing is that people do if they're if they have an issue they need to feel that they can stand up and they can come and say something and
then obviously you know these are graduates but but our current students and and we need to make sure we're providing an atmosphere where where these kids feel comfortable doing that and to that end we will keep working to make sure that we do that and when they come forward that we will absolutely do something about it because it's mr.
