001Good evening everyone. My name is Dr. Lynn Zeter. I am the proud school board president of district 230. At this time, I'd like to call the May 28th meeting to order. Lisa, if you could take the role. >> Member Hamad >> here. >> Member here. >> Member Sarah Tori >> here. Member Dolin >> here. >> Member Danlow >> here. Member Kelly >> here. >> The member seed >> here. If we can all rise for the pledge to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Um before we begin, I want to officially welcome Mohammad to sitting at the big table. Um he is so thank you for joining our team. Mo has stepped right in and
002went to all three graduations last week and has started to attend other committee meetings. We were very blessed to know um Mo and his work and the contribution and collaboration by being part of building and finance. Um, conversely, it's always sad to tell people no. We are blessed that many people did apply. Um, the applications are open online if people want to serve for any of our three committees. We have education, building and finance, and student support and development. So, those are open and that's where we got to got to know Mo and we're looking forward to seeing you participate tonight. You get a onetime deal that if there's anything when we go to vote on anything you're not comfortable because you're not caught up to speed, but I think you're well caught up to
003speed. If you're not comfortable, you can abstain. Okay. All right. We'll start the meeting. Superintendent opening remarks. >> Thank you. Uh I'll keep them brief. Uh first of all, as we know, the uh school year has officially ended. Um, as of yesterday, we had our staff coming in and and clearing out um their their their year, you know, recordkeeping and everything like that. Our seniors um had been gone for a little bit, but we just had graduation a week uh week ago uh three in a row. And um congratulations to all three buildings. An excellent event all three of you had uh celebrating our our class of 2026. Um they are incredible kids. They they did a lot of outstanding things for our all three of our schools. Um and and all I can say
004is as a principal, former principal, current superintendent, having all three scheduled and go on the same night that they were scheduled to go on, that's a win. So, thank you for that. Um but, uh also walking out the door, um and had the pleasure of of of talking to many of them yesterday where are retirees uh at all three schools. It was a little bit of a shy year in terms of retirement. Um but it's never without uh a celebration of a long career that um our our schools um have enjoyed from uh teaching support staff, food service staff, and this year uh administration. Um so I wish every single one of them the best as they move forward and thank them for what they've done for district 230 for all these years. Um we
005did do some work in in in in May. It was in all celebrations. Um, so my my uh um hat goes off to uh a lot of our folks that work through AP exams. Uh, I do want to say that that uh district 230 at all three schools um I think it's almost a major it seems like it's like most of our kids are taking an AP exam. It's it's a huge number and it's a lot of work to put that together. So, thank you uh to our administration, our counseling departments, our our our teachers to prepare those students. We don't know the results yet, but um based on what I' I've seen the last few years, I'm I'm looking forward to some great results there as well. Uh and of course, our final exams
006that ended on Tuesday um that I I'm sure our underassmen were were very happy to get out of their way. So, great end of the year. Um great year in general and and we're going to celebrate a lot more in June once we get all the the final numbers and everything. But, uh I I can tell you right now that we're very optimistic. We're going to share a lot of great news um within the next couple weeks as far as uh district 230's perform. So, thank you. >> Thank you. Do we have any amendments? >> No, ma'am. >> All right. Next, our student staff spotlight. >> All right. You are going to have a a a parade of probably half of our entire enrollment and Dr. Smith will be kicking us off. >> Love that.
007Love that. >> There you go. Hello everybody. Uh it's my honor to kind of kick off our student recognitions and I'm going to invite up uh Jane Chan and Grace Worster for our first two rounds here. All right. Um Jane is part of two uh or a few Skills USA recognition tonights. Jane have you guys just stand right here. Yeah. Jane is been part of Skills USA. She's been an active member. She's had some leadership opportunities at state level in skills. And here to celebrate Jane as a state be in first place in extemporaneous speaking. So round of applause for Jane. It's it's hard to be surprised by Jane's been super active uh in the group and had some leadership opportunities. So, kind of great to see that work kind of pay off with a
008kind of a first place. Uh this was a serendipitous timing for tonight's recognition because I believe she's headed to nationals tomorrow to continue some of that competition. So, round of applause for Jane. >> All right. >> This spring at Samberg, we've also had some economic successes. N201, Miss Christina Simpson's class has become a hub for the stock market game and all types of stuff. And our second uh student to recognize tonight is Miss Grace Worster for her achievement in the Sithma Foundation's Investor Wright competition. So, round of applause for Grace. It's a program where uh Grace finished in first place in Illinois for the writing competition and third place nationally. So super proud of all those things for Grace. Dr. Nelt and myself uh were able to kind of attend a little bit of a
009party for Grace on all the things. So we were able to have a representative from the group kind of zoom into the space who just spoke so highly of Grace's writing and uh the the the representative from Sithma who was with us just talked about how Grace's essay just come kept coming to the top of the pile. So, um, round of applause for Grace for that recognition. Same room, same group with SIFMA, but we also had a team of San Bergians take first place in the state of Illinois with the stock market game. So, it's busy times here in finals week. So, uh, recognizing tonight also Brady Honig, Maline Casmmer, Foster Luckard, and Mark Ruer for their achievement in the, uh, stock market game, finishing first place for the high school division in the state
010of Illinois. >> Kennedy Bart also couldn't be here tonight. She also was able to achieve some great things within the um, Skills USA program. She took third place at the state level in fashion design. So, round of applause FOR 2026 GOAR GRACE, if you guys start your own investment firm and call it N201 Investing, um, I want a little cut of that. So, round of applause for these guys. >> I think there'll be a bunch of us who >> There you go. There you go. CONGRATULATIONS. >> POWERLIFTERS, please enter the premises. Yeah. >> So, I I say at this time of year, it's May board meeting and I kind of it's I always say this each year like in mid '9s, you know, there's going to be a party in Grant Park with the Jordan
011Bulls with the super fans and all that. And that's kind of how I feel about Samberg Powerlifting and D230 powerlifting who are all doing great things uh at the state level. So, I'm happy to recognize our uh boys team for state level recognition, our girls team for state level recognition. I'm going to pass the mic to uh coach Carrier here uh to kind of talk about what these guys have done. So uh as usual, you know, you know how to do this, coach. Come on up. >> So, thank you very much uh for taking the time to recognize these these very strong, powerful young men and women. Uh they did very well for themselves this year. Um so we're really grateful and I'd like to thank Dr. Smith as well and our administration. They've always
012provided us every resource we've ever asked for, needed to help them be successful in the weight room and beyond. So, we're really grateful. And then one thing that I should probably also do for parents that are here is thank you for delivering them like you did because God, their work ethic is outstanding. They're super high character kids and they made our jobs very, very easy. Um, and to you guys just and I know you know this, but we probably don't say it enough. Um, coach and I are super proud of you. your character, your work ethic, your grit, your ability to endure a lot of discomfort over a very long time to get strong is uh is very commendable and you're just great kids. We love being around you. So, thank you to you guys.
013Um the other thing I have to say too cuz he's here and he never he always makes me talk every year. It's it's not a joke. Coach Zimmer, uh, the best coach that I know, best teacher I know, best man, father, and, uh, makes every kid better, but more importantly, he makes every adult better. So, I appreciate him, and and I know the kids love him as well. So, thanks, Coach Zimmer. So, what we're going to do really quickly is just have uh you guys, if you just step forward, say your name, and if you placed um first or second, you can make mention of that as well. But I do want to say one thing. Whether these lifters placed first or second and received an individual award, um every single one of them contributed
014in an enormous way leading towards a team victory. Girls first place, guys second place as a team. and and truly every lifter that total score. So while they do recognize first and second place lift lifters with individual meetings or medals rather, every single one of them is critical and uh they're really really strong. So why don't you guys just go ahead and start? You can just say your name and and if you got a first or second place, you can say that as well. My name is Alexander. My name is still So, the girls program is on quite a roll. I was just checking in with Molly. She's been with us, this is her third state meet, state champion, three consecutive years. She uh she holds multiple state records in multiple weight classes. And uh
015this year she was also um the lifter of the meat on the female side, which is calculated by a Wilks formula. So, it's body weight with the total amount of pounds lifted and she won it by a huge margin. So, that's another really, really cool award. Congratulations, Molly. >> All right, gentlemen. Why don't we start down by Steve? I play second. >> My name is I place third. >> My name is Nolan Tor. place first. My name is >> my name is >> my name and I play >> just just a just a quick note and Aiden says I did not place. Well, coach and I talked about it and we talked about it with Aiden. He certainly did place. And we've known lifters for many, many years. And this just happened to me and
016we told Aiden, "My god, any other year you're a first place lifter, a second place lifter across the entire state." It just so happened it was a crazy crazy year in his weight class specifically. So, he'll be back with us for at least another two years, and I'm sure there's going to be a a medal under his belt as well. >> There you go. Great. There you go. >> So, that's pretty much all we have. Um, thank you guys for your time. >> We appreciate it guys. Thank you. >> We look forward to seeing you next year. >> Become an annual. >> Will all these students be coming back next year? >> So, everyone on this side. Yes. >> Um, and actually everyone on this side. >> Absolutely. Yeah. So, >> we'll see you back
017here next year. >> Yes. >> Thank you guys. >> Thank you. What a great guy. Great. Mr. Olsen, I believe. >> All right. He's going to do >> at the end. Sorry for all powerliffters. Get out of the way. >> Uh good evening everyone. Um it is my pleasure to um present to the board of education yet another or a couple of state championships uh from Stack High School in esports. Just to give you a very brief history because Stag High School is the state powerhouse in esports. Um, in the past five years, Stag High School has brought home eight state championships and two runners up in four different events. Um, and this year, um, we have two state championships that were, um, presenting you with both the Madden State Championship with Ryan McNelte, who
018is a twotime state champion in Madden, couldn't be here today. Um, and then also our Super Smash Brothers uh, uh, crew. um uh also um state champions this year. So, I'm going to hand the mic over um to Jonathan McGriel, our illustrious coach, um to share a little bit about this amazing team. All right. Hey guys. Uh so, we've been here before, uh but this time with fury uh because this crew right here last year sectionals got rocked. Uh we got sent home fast actually uh which was a learning experience and it really uh was the flint and the ignition to the flame that was this year. Uh true dominance. Uh they had the hardest sectionals in the state that was a hands down um I would say unanimous like decision among uh all coaches
019that Andrew was just a fierce team. Manuka, TF South. We had four strong state contenders all within the same sectionals to which only two can pass on to state. Um, it could a win in any direction truly. Uh, the bracket rolled at sectionals and lo and behold, Andrew may have some arguments against it, but I would say that we had the hardest sectionals bracket just just right away. We had to just go through the gauntlet. And they did. They did their homework. They did their research. Uh and I would say I don't know countless hours, countless nights, uh just making sure the matchups look good. Okay, if they open up with uh their pit, how do we uh counter with our gaming watch? Like the number of uh maps that you can I think of
020like just the classic like uh all the different yarns on a on a on a on a wall of just how many different routes you could possibly plan for. and uh they found the the the secret and we hit it. Um we took a loss and uh we did end up winning it giving us a pretty decent seed but is still pretty rough state as well. Um but just by the kind of calmer, relaxed, cooler, composed nature of the squad. We flew a little under the radar, but uh you could you could almost tell that as the hours went on at state say 8:00 it's like oh maybe maybe SAGS wash. We don't know yet. They they had their winning squad two years ago and then all of a sudden like 10:00 rolls around, 11:00
021rolls around, 12:00 rolls around. You hear all these pockets of kids just saying, "Okay, wait, we really need to pay attention to this." And sure enough, they are the only team that to have won a state of all our four team state wins um to win a state championship without even taking a single loss. Uh so this is and that's a serious accomplishment that you guys seriously earned. So uh this team has been a it's been a really fun narrative. You know, there's always narratives when it comes to competition and uh this one I've been particularly attached to. So, uh we're honored to be here and they are truly a squad to be um feared. >> Um and who will be back next year? >> All of us. >> Okay. All right. Well, then we'll
022see. >> Can we get a quick quick name run? >> Yeah. I'm >> Well, you you guys aren't like first name famous. Give us like >> they're actually brothers. >> I was sorry. >> Congratulations, guys. I saw Mr. Olson recruiting a couple Andrew kids. I just want to tell you that the transfer request will not be granted. You got to keep separate. But congratulations. I just want to just add in relation to Andrew. Um, one of the coolest matches that I saw um at Evergreen Park High School was um watching Mario Part Andrew and Stag. I mean, and and like wild like there was a lot yelling not at each other, >> right? Um but it was just the coolest thing to see within the district, right? And after it was done with, right, it
023was all handshakes. I mean really kind of a district 230 family and even in there they're in there talking with each other and everything. So it's just a a really cool thing to see within the district, you know, such powerhouses like that, but yet clearly being friends or at least friendly frenemies. >> I I loved seeing your faces. The pride when you were talking just says it all at the hard work that you put into this and the enjoyment that you're having with this. So we will see you next year as well. >> So thank you. >> Right on. THINK we've got some more uh heavy lifters coming up. Right. >> We do. All right. Strength. If I can bring coach Dich and our so obviously you have seen our powerlifting teams here before um
024and uh this this year our women's team was exceptional um this year placing second as a team in state um and we also had let's See, we had uh a second pl two two seconds or one >> Two second place and one individual um champion. Um over the course of the years, the last couple of years, they've been coming in third. Now they're in second. So, I'm feeling really good about where this these guys are going, these women are going. Um so, I'm going to hand it over to Coach Deutsch um to share a little bit about the team. Um, hi everyone. Um, I'm Coach Danielle Deutsch. Um, I want to apologize on behalf of Coach Brian Buglio who really wanted to be here um to recognize these amazing athletes. Um, whoever put us after
025Samberg. It's always a tough act to follow. Um, I know I'm wearing yellow and blue, but my heart is really with the Chargers. Um, we did beat Samberg though at our regionals. I do want to point that out that these ladies did beat them at regionals. Um, but no, second place at state is an amazing accomplishment. And those unfamiliar with the association, um, we're a separate entity in terms of the IHSA. So, it's the IHSPLA, which is the Illinois High School Powerlifting Association. And I've been a part of it since 2019. And since then, it's grown so much that they've actually had to split the state competition from a 1A to a 2A. um instead of all being together. So, we were part of the 1A state competition um which just shows the growth and
026how quickly this sport is growing, especially at the female level. Um and to see these athletes do what they do is amazing. Who's ever been able to come to one of our events knows that it's so special. Um it's unlike cheer, which I also coach where you're like, "Oh, I hope like there's somebody that touched touches down on tumbling or something like that." you're always rooting for everyone who's competing and it's an amazing thing to watch, an amazing thing to be a part of. Um, and for some of these athletes I've got to watch from their very first year like Vicki Kenobko who has been an athlete of mine since her freshman year. Um, she ended up earning second for the second year in a row in her weight class which is an amazing accomplishment.
027Um, she's also an amazing person. and I always tell her mom that I wish if my daughters end up anything like her then I'll I've done something right. Um so that's just she always tugs on my heart. Um and then we also had Alexis who placed first in the 123 weight class which was another amazing accomplishment. It was a pretty deep weight class in terms of the competition. So to place that the first year out is awesome. Um me yes and Mina Lara also placed second. She's not here um tonight. But again, all of these ladies standing up here, we wouldn't have gotten the score that we got to play second without each and every one of them. So that deserves a round of applause. Um again, I'm just really proud of this team. I'm
028so glad that the board chooses to recognize them because it's so much hard work. It's more than just a regional competition and a state competition. It's from the start of January until May. And it's been really amazing to see how far they've come and what they've been able to accomplish. And I think each and every one of them had APR that day. Um, so again, really great job and I'm super proud of you guys and it's been an honor. >> My name's Victoria. Isabelle Telson, Stephanie Chandler, Julia Martinez. >> And then not with us tonight was Eliza Ketta, Mina, Lara, and >> Kayla Castillo. >> Yes. >> And will we all get to see you next year? >> Yep. Okay. that one. I was She's looking at >> we can fail you. Like the grades
029aren't in yet. We English P. >> Sorry. But thank you for coming. Thank you. >> Thank you. >> All right. Thank you for all you do. >> CONGRATULATIONS. >> Uh I'm going to ask uh Mr. Olsen to Sorry. I'm gonna ask Mr. Olsen to hover around a little bit. We have one more kind of unique recognition for Stag High School. Um, SAG High School was recognized by Learning by Design, which is a uh national publication for architecture in schools and and and uh uh SAG um based on the project that of course this board is fully aware of um that was completed about um about a year ago. Um >> um that uh expanded um classroom space um um a lot office space and and and hallways as well. um we know on the on
030the floor level how impactful that's been, but it's also equally um impressive and and and we're very thankful to have a uh national recognition for that project. So, uh Mr. Olsen and uh our our crew from GC Studios, Studio GC, sorry, I always >> I know Anita, it's like I've been I've been mismanaging codes all week. CVS is not C. Yeah, we're good. Um but uh Mr. Olsson, please u share some thoughts and and invite your your friends, especially the the former stag grads. >> If we can get Nikki Bridges and Brian to come forward here. >> Dave, please join him. You wereave >> I think part of that >> you know Dave, Mr. Dave, um first of all, I just want to say um uh first thank you to the board um for funding
031this project. as you know, it was so so needed in our building and it made such an impact. Thank you to Dr. Nolting um for listening, for coming in and and really kind of getting boots in the ground to kind of see what we were experiencing, right? And and certainly um support and investigate what kind of options that that we had and certainly with the support of Dave. But the really really cool thing um with Studio GC is we had two architects who are stat graduates. Um, so both Nikki and Brian graduated from Stack High School. So, it really makes it really special for our for our community, right? You know, they were super successful students, right? But to see them come back, right, and then really pour their creativity into the building, like certainly
032we felt the love in that, right? And I guarantee we wouldn't have the same product if it wasn't for the fact that we had two chargers just really kind of leading the way on it. So, um, so certainly thank you to to all of you, but thank you to you guys, um, for taking care of your home and helping us with the addition. Um, so I don't know if you guys want to say anything. >> Nick, are you you're not you're not afraid to speak. So, I I'll call on you, Miss Bridges, for just a brief statement of behav. We've had a great partnership with your with your architect firm for as as far as I could recall. Um so um this was a I think a a great um integration of what we needed
033based on what you guys were able to create for us. So thank you for that. But also I just want to give you an opportunity to to share with the board the the the purpose for for why this recognition was so special. >> Yes. Well, thank you. I mean, we're here on a night of celebration, which is the greatest thing to be here, but we're just so happy to be able to celebrate with you and present you with an award instead of the students or in addition to the students. So, um this award is um for uh outstanding design. It is presented by um learning design, learning by design magazine and the project is featured in the magazine um which we have copies for you today um to share with you and um it is
034the 2026 um educational facilities design outstanding project award and um for the CI expansion project it's awarded to projects for the innovation and design and um for expanding um collaboration and communication and community within the school and built environment. So, we're just um so honored to have been able to work with the school district. We want to present this award to you and share this award with you and it was just such a pleasure to work with the administration and staff. Um such a great great opportunity for us people who are so dedicated to their students here at District 230. Great job. >> Sure. >> I don't have much to add, but um yeah, it's just a pleasure to work for a board of education like you guys um approving a project like this um
035both being stag grads um and just kind of giving back to the district that I think kind of shaped us who we are as well. Um and I want to thank uh Eric and his team and then Dave uh Keading and John Connelly and and and everybody else. I know I'm missing some names, but um it's just a truly an honor. Um and uh yeah, just happy to be here to present this award to you guys. They have a picture of Stag on there. >> So, we'll leave everything. >> And I I also want to thank the board members that preceded all of us. Um there are several of us who were not um on the board at the start. I came on when it was in the middle of construction, but we've seen the
036benefits um every time we go into the school and see what it has done for the climate, the safety, the appearance. I was saying that at the conference last fall, the triple eye conference, Sue and I stopped at your table and there we were um front and center. So, it's definitely a showplace and we're very proud of everybody's efforts to bring us to where we are today. So, thank you. >> Yeah. And and I just I just want to say being there when you just brought the initial pictures to building and finance, Nikki, and we sat there and looked at it and said, "Oh, that would be kind of cool. That would be great." And then we said, "How much is it going to be?" And then we figured that out. But it the thing
037that was most amazing about this project and and Dave, I know you'll agree is that every month as we monitored this from the very beginning until that final piece was put in place, it just seemed like it almost was going too smooth. Every month we're like, "Okay, something's going to happen." And it never did. It was such a seamless project and it just rolled from beginning to end. We know it came in sooner than we thought. It came in under budget, which was great. Um, and it's beautiful. Um, and it served all the purposes uh that Stag needed. So, I mean, to get an award, I think kind of justifies how that whole project worked. And I think you guys and Dave and everybody who is involved in this and Eric obviously you spent a
038lot of time in this. You guys should also be congratulated because you put a lot of time, a lot of effort, a lot of work and and the proof is what just happened. So thank you guys so much for what you did and it it is greatly appreciated. So thank you. I just wanted to add also that the collaboration on the onset of finding out the ideas, what our problems were, what we needed, um the listening from um you was wonderful because you took all that back and you figured out solutions to problems that we didn't even know could be solved. And I think because of that is why it went so smoothly and so quickly. I as a board member was like, "Oh my gosh, we just saw drawings and we've already approved the
039budget." Like this is going way faster than I had ever expected it to, but it was the good communication, the sharing, and the collaboration. Um, and then finding us top talent to put those build, you know, put that addition on. Um, the communication with Dave and, um, John and and Eric. uh just thank you so much because it was seamless as Tony said and it started from listening to what our needs were and addressing them. So, thank you very much. Well, thank you and uh I think we have the uh the southsiders here for little recognition and um >> yeah, we went >> we do we have an announcement. We have we have a we have a showdown, a district 2:30 showdown as as we learned. >> Dr. Smith, we will see you at 11:00
040a.m. Baseball on. >> Yeah, we're going to have to we're going to have to control the the audience on the uh >> Yes. >> And that's at Andrew High School. 11:00 a.m. Samberg Stag Regional Championship baseball. >> I'm glad we've got I got a I have a district t-shirt so I don't >> Yeah, we're going to we're going to figure out we got to get some passes worked out. We got >> We got some board members skipping their kids' graduation just for that event. So, you know how important that is. >> Absolutely. Good. I am proud to share with you tonight our Super Smash Brothers team who earned an incredible fourth place finish at the IHSA state finals. Competing at the state level, as you know, not only requires strategy, but teamwork and dedication. With
041me tonight is coach Amy Lystra, who's very familiar to this group as well. Coach Swick was not able to attend as he is celebrating his daughter's own recognition this evening. We're extremely proud of our team both representing Andrew. Um, I'm going to call up their names and step forward so that you can be recognized. Uh, Nathan Bed Bedia, Owen Murray, Joseph Schultz is a senior, so he's not here with us, and Cody Trong and Gerald U. Derby. Congratulations to our T-Bolts. Um, since the inception of esports, the Andrew team has gone every single year and competed and won some type of level at state. As soon as the IHSA called it a an activity at state, our school has gone every single year. So, kudos to our coaches and our kids that are committed and
042perform in the top four yearly. Congratulations, T-Bolts. information. >> Yeah. >> He's the captain, Amari. >> He's the captain coming to support Amari. What year did we start Amari? He was giving me a history. >> Oh, yeah. Uh, we started in 2022 with Zade and >> Dr. Principal. Yeah, he's our surprising again going to the Mark team. 25 was also the art team and alumni Matt Dominic Sim. And then twin 36 was the mark team and the smash team. But Smash team is farther than us. >> So congratulations to your captain. >> He knows it all. >> He's our historian. >> I hope you're recording that. So when when you're not here, are you still keep coming back? >> Oh, he'll keep coming back. Yeah. Yeah, we'll we'll bring him back here after. >> Thank
043you, gentlemen. You guys congratulations. Next is our uh early childhood skills USA. Some familiar faces as well. Uh I'm very excited tonight and proud to recognize our outstanding Skills USA competitors. With me tonight is Miss Nez who is their sponsor as well as our fax uh teacher. Uh please join me in congratulating um the state winners. So, first off is Sarah Oman. Kind of looks a little familiar. Um, Sarah placed third in teaching and learning portfolio. We get teased a lot. They say cut and paste over here. Copy and paste. >> Could you tell her how to do her job better? Cuz I mean, I would really appreciate your support on helping. >> Well, she is helping and >> she's looking her career aspirations is to be an educator and she's looking to be a
044fax teacher and probably one day looking to take over my job. So, there you go. Yes. Are you >> I have no doubt. >> Yeah. Sarah has been a three-year repeat uh state champion at Skills. Uh so this is uh her uh senior year. She is going to, like I said, pursue uh fax teaching for her career. Also with us is Emma Stanazookuski. Uh Emma received first place in early childhood education. Emma's a junior, so she'll be back next year and this is her second year repeat as a state champion as well. Yes. Congratulations to both of them. We are super proud of them. We also had Maggie Brower who earned third place not with us tonight and Cassie Nepari and Maggie Brower both scored second place in their preschool interactive display. Their accomplishments, hard
045work, and talent obviously with the support of their incredible sponsor and teacher. Congratulations to our Skills USA repeat winners. Congratulations. >> And future 230 staff, right? >> Yes, >> that's right. It's just a pipeline. >> Yeah, it's the pipeline. Yeah, >> Jen Nez is too. >> Got to retire sometime. And so you need that, you know, little, you know, >> little bit. >> Not not by the minute, but by the >> He's got five of them. So, they'll keep coming. We're okay. We're okay. >> They'll be here for a little bit. Also with me is uh recognizing Come on, Coach Short. uh Andrew High School. I am so proud and honored to share this recognition with our school board tonight. Coach Elizabeth Short for being named the National Wrestling Coaches Association Illinois Coach of the
046Year. This is a national recognition. Wow. This prestigious honor recognizes coaches who demonstrate exceptional leadership, dedication to student athletes, and outstanding contributions to the sport of wrestling. Coach Short has been instrumental in strengthening our D230 wrestling program, creating a culture of hard work and resiliency as well as providing opportunity for our student athletes. this incredible recognition. In addition to it, uh, Coach Short has been selected to serve team USA at the Paname Games in Mexico City this summer. So, she's an extraordinary accomplishment. Yes, that reflects the respect that she has earned, not only statewide, but nationally within our wrestling community. We are incredibly proud of Coach Short, and congratulations on this welldeserved honor. Congratulations, Awesome. >> Good luck. >> Congrat tips and tricks in Mexico City >> in July. End of July. It'll be >>
047Mexico City in July. It'll be wonderfully wonderful weather, right? >> Mine is hair tie just like you've got your hair pulled back. >> I think wrestling a different kind of wrestling is popular there. >> That's right. That's right. Congratulations. >> Yeah. Wow, that's great. >> Great things to celebrate. Next we have our curriculum spotlight, Dr. Huffman. >> All right. Uh good evening. Uh tonight we're showcasing our industry credentials. They have been a cornerstone of our career and college readiness here in the district with staff across academic departments coming together to provide opportunities for our students. Last year alone, more than 2,000 credentials were earned by our students, offering them opportunities to earn industry recognized credentials from OSHA to Adobe Certified to Microsoft Office Specialist to Lifeguard and CPR during their high school years, which provide
048measurable benefits that extend well beyond the classroom. These credentials distinguish our students among college applications, scholarship opportunities, and certainly the workforce. The real world value of our industry credentials was demonstrated most recently, if the board remembers, when one of our students used CPR to perform the Heimlick um to save a friend, while a former student uh recently rescued a woman who was drowning in Lake Michigan and she had received her CPR certification while at STAG. So these credentials provide our students with employability opportunities and life skills that extend far beyond graduation, deepen their engagement in our local community, and prepare them to contribute meaningfully for whatever task that they lead. District 230 uh with our staff looks at providing a wide variety of different uh student certifications that they can earn while being a part
049of uh the regular curriculum process uh in their classes. >> We normally do it through PE classes. Um there's times where kids can sign up and I will also certify as well, but for the most part it's pretty much during their PE classes that they can get certified. >> It made me feel prepared. It made me feel ready to go and respond to these emergencies. You can know what to do with like bystanders of if someone else is like trying to crowd somebody or calling like this especially like 911. Somebody can panic in those situations. >> It's it's just a small snippet of what they will have to know. Um if the kids are are lifeguard certified, they're a professional rescuer, not a responder. >> I'm looking also into the medical field. um continuing a
050career in nursing. So, um I feel like what I learned in the lifeguard like class and becoming a lifeguard is very important for nursing. >> We even had a situation a couple years ago in which one of our CPR certified students uh was able to implement those skills and to help save somebody's life. So, uh, we're we're not only just providing student certifications that can help, uh, prepare our students for their post-secary endeavors, but we're also providing skills that these kids are going to be able to take with them long after, uh, they get done with their high school career. >> Math and construction is definitely one of my favorite classes. I just love how like the math you learn is stuff that you actually apply to real life. We are very proud of the
051fact that we have students that are going to be earning student certifications uh in the area of uh OSHA certification. >> Earning the OSHA 10 certification definitely changed my outlook on this course. I always thought building construction obviously there was safety measures to it but there's a lot of deeper safety than you would ever think. And all the students that complete the OSHA certification receive an card which shows that they are they're trained and certified in the OSHA construction certification which in the future will help them be employable. >> I'd say the most challenging part of earning certification was definitely it's a 10-hour long safety procedure. So it's a lot of nittygritty safety stuff you have to remember. gives them a taste of what they'll what they'll be doing as soon as they get into
052the union, as soon as they get into the trades. >> The ECE level one credential is offered in ECE. The mandated reporter is offered in all classes. So, I've learned the ECE level one credential on the school age youth development credential and the mandated reporter. They have nine modules and in the modules they cover topics like child development, guidance, classroom management, working with families and the community as well as professionalism. I want to go into elementary special education and these credentials really taught me about diverse learning at times and talking about accommodating different students. It's kind of a college course. So, they are way more confident and when they're confident then they are way more likely to succeed. >> We can help to prepare them that they're making more confident choices with what they want
053to do. >> It just made me feel like this was the right choice for me. These credentials have helped me when it comes to my future courses and knowing what I already have and how that will help me prepare for what I do need to take in college. when I was being interviewed and they were like looking over my resume. They saw that I had my reporter and the credential and it was part of the reason I actually got hired on the spot because they saw that I was already prepared. Learning these skills now will definitely help prepare me for the future is so important. We also have our business classes are providing uh both QuickBooks certification as well as Microsoft essentials that we had a student from stag who placed in the top 10
054in the state of Illinois uh with the Microsoft essential suite. for the certification. When the students get that, it just can open up. Um, while in high school or college internship opportunities, you're pretty much telling the employer, the college, um, you know, how to use those, you know, the three, the the word, the Excel, and PowerPoint. Um, so they don't have to worry about going in and taking a test. I apply to multiple summer internships and having these skills already knowledgeable. Um, I don't have to spend time learning them at the place. I already have them on hand. So, I definitely think that's important. It doesn't matter if you're going into an internship, into a trade, into college directly into the workforce. Uh it applies to a wide range of students. That's what makes it
055so great. If you have, you know, two candidates going for the same job and um you know, similar experience and background and one uh of the candidates has has the certification, it could kind of put them over the edge. And we do auto certifications. Uh the three programs we primarily use are AutoCAD, Inventor, and Revit. the students, I mean, they're learning throughout the entire year and semester just by being in the classes and using the programs, but when it comes to time to actually take the certification test, there is some specific things they need to know. The most valuable skill I learned is probably like the ability to adapt cuz often you need to use different tools and it's like trial and error. I use one tool and it helps me lean to another tool
056that actually helped me find the correct answer. >> It's it's hands-on, so they're actually using the software. Um, it's a lot of problem solving, design work. >> We had to have it hands-on. It wasn't like questions where it was multiple choice. It was we had to actually um perform and alter different files. >> It's builds confidence, you know, it enhances their skills by doing it. >> Taking this class and taking like the Revit and even the CAD one definitely made me realize I like architecture. I even any like worry I had that I was unsure of is gone cuz this class like very interesting very different and it's like a skill that you wouldn't learn elsewhere. >> One of the things that we were very proud of here in district 230 is that last year
057uh we had over 1,200 student certifications that were earned uh across all three buildings. In my classroom, I have an entire wall in the corner with all their certificates, and they always like to to see those up there on the wall. It's just, you know, again, it's build confidence. It's something to be proud of. >> I do have one question. Um, as I was reading through this, um, do we have a food certification, sanitary food, >> the sanitation certification? Yes. So, um, we are working on that in our culinary pathway, um, adding that for, um, some of our new culinary courses. So, that is definitely on the radar and we're always looking for ways that we can expand our industry credentials. >> Okay. Thank you. >> All right. Thank you. >> All right. Next we
058have the committee reports. Member Gasmmer. >> Uh the education committee met on May 6 to review three major topics. Districtwide institute day, the new state accountability model, and key legislative updates. First, Dr. Huffman reported on our district-wide institute day themed evolving excellence. The day featured district-wide updates, sessions on AI implementation and curriculum alignment, and breakout topics from wellness to technology skills. Next, Dr. Dr. Huffman presented Illinois's shift to the final accountability model. The state is dropping school rankings in favor of a simpler, fairer system. Core indicators will uh measure proficiency, growth, and graduation rates. Elevating indicators like attendance and English learner progress can raise a school's status, but never lower it. Schools will fall into one of five designations. Exemplary, approaching exemplary, commendable, developing, or comprehensive. Applied to 2025 data. This model attempts to produce
059a much more balanced distribution than the previous systems. The new accountability system is set to take effect with this year's data and is pending Department of Education approval. Uh then Dr. Noling shared three legislative updates. Public Act 102-0551 establishes revisions and exceptions to the 2-year world language graduation requirements starting in 2028 to 2029 with CT coursework as an allowable alternative. Senate Bill 3669 would move the multi-ter system of support framework from special education into the regular education code covering both academic and social emotional interventions. And Senate Bill 2427 outlines a student cell phone ban during instructional hours by 2027 to 28 with scheduling flexibility for high schools required exceptions. >> Excuse me. I thought I was almost there. I thought I was going to get through. Required exceptions for medical learning emergency needs, mandated secure
060storage, and an explicit prohibition on fines or police enforcement. Finally, the committee conducted a first read of policies 665, 6100, 6145, 6170, and 6180. Our next meeting is this coming Wednesday, June 3rd, right here in our learning center. >> Any questions? Member Kelly, student support. The committee meeting began with a strategic framework update highlighting year 2 efforts targeting chronic absenteeism and discipline safety referrals for English teachers from Stag High School, including committee member uh Shelley Thos. Then presented on the college essay boot camp, a title one funded program that provides targeted and personalized writing support for students navigating essay writing for college admissions. The teachers shared a vision and evolution of the program as well as its impact on students. The committee also reviewed the district's school resource pro officer program as presented by Dr.
061Carr, noting recent alignment to Senate Bill 1519 and the use of educ use use of the educated counselor educator counselor officer model. Miss Lisa Schulman provided an overview of the updated special education procedures based on the March 2026 revision made by the Illinois Council of School Attorneys. highlighted revisions including include timeline changes, expanded parental rights, and updated transition planning. Mr. Oando then provided state legislative updates, including pending bills related to district's multi-tiered systems of support, MTSS, plans, and regulations regarding student cell phone use during instructional time. The legislative briefing also touched on mandate reductions, traumainformed training, and provisions for students experiencing homelessness. Finally, the committee reviewed the first reading of press issue 121, policies, which primarily featured minor language updates, legal cross reference adjustments, and five-year reviews. Next meeting is going to be on June
0629th. Thank you. >> Any questions? Okay. And we did not have building and finance, >> right? So >> thanks graduation. >> All right. Next we have the teachers association and we have Mark tonight. >> Good evening. Mark Loes. I'm the new vice president of the D230 um uh teachers association. I just want to be very brief tonight. Uh the teachers are look forward to a summer of refresh and renew and we will be back August 10th with the first of our two teachers uh institute days. So a happy summer to you all >> and to you as well. >> Thank you >> Christie from ESP. >> Good evening. Thank you for having me as always. Well, we made it to the end of the school year. Um, I'm grateful for the opportunity to um be
063able to attend these monthly meetings and to use my few minutes at the podium each month to recognize the many accomplishments of the approximate 240 ESPs that work throughout District 230. Um, on May 16th of this year, in conjunction with Teacher Appreciation Week, the National Education Association also celebrated World ESP Day, an opportunity to acknowledge the education support professionals who help strengthen schools, communities, and unions nationwide. In district 230, as I've mentioned many times before, our ESPs provide essential support throughout our schools and buildings in roles including clerical, financial, security, and paraprofessional. uh services. Any chance I get, I will gladly express my appreciation for the hard work that the ESPs do each and every day to support our students, our schools, our fellow staff members, and of course, our community. The ESP association also
064says goodbye to several ESPs who have recently retired or who will be retiring in the coming days. combined, these ESPs have an average career time span of about 20 years, which I think that is really fantastic to have such a long career here. Um, they've undoubtedly made a significant and positive impact uh during their time here, and of course, they will be greatly missed. Lastly, on a personal note, I would like to thank the school board and all of the administration for the cooperative working relationship that you have shown me um as I've navigated my first year as president of the ESP Association Union. I look forward to continuing this positive and productive momentum into the upcoming school year. Best wishes to everyone for a great summer. I of course will be around and I'm
065sure I'll see you somewhere along the way. But I hope you all have a fantastic summer in the meantime and I thank you so much for your time tonight. Thank you for all you do, >> Jennifer. District 230 foundation update. just like to quickly um add that the foundation board um reviewed about 20 teacher grants last month and they decided and voted on 14 to fund for a total of just over $34,000. So everything from fine arts to postsecary to social emotional needs. Um I we can look forward to a lot of good work being done next year. >> Awesome. Thank you. >> Thanks. >> And thank you. I was able to attend that meeting and I saw the hard work that they put into reviewing all of those applications um and more to come
066about the process and they had a course on that at institute day so people could know how to apply for it so they could be successful. So it's a kudos um to a hardworking group of people benefiting our students and staff. So thank you. Um at this time we do not have any public comments. Correct. >> Okay. All right. Next. Could I have a motion for our consent agenda? >> I move that the school board approve the consent agenda items as presented. >> Second. >> Any questions? All right. Lisa, will you take the role? >> Member. >> Yes. >> Member. >> Yes. >> Member Sarah Tori. >> Yes. >> Member Dalton. >> Yes. >> Member D. >> Yes. >> Member Kelly. >> Yes. >> Member Zer. >> Yes. Motion passed. Next, we have our project
067report day. Good evening everyone. Um report as of yet, but construction starts up first thing Monday morning. So, um we're ready to dive in with all of our projects. The roofing, the HVAC, uh track repair, lighting, we've got lights and all over the place. So, uh we're off and running, very busy. So, hopefully next month I'll have uh some projects finished and project reports on where we're at with all the other projects we have. So, but maybe has any specific questions on any projects. >> You keep us updated every month. So, thank you. >> All right. Sweet. >> All right. We have no new business or no old business. So, superintendent updates. >> Yes. Uh again, I'll keep this uh brief and and as always, we'll answer any questions based on the information provided. If
068I could um uh attract your attention to page page three, which is actually on the second page. So, it's page three on the bottom. Um, just a a highlight of of the work that um and and again, I I feel like I'm talking on behalf of people in this room that should be probably talking in behalf of themselves, but um Charles and his team did a lot of work um with regard to EL as our board has known. Um since we focused on our strategic framework, you know, we we do have uh an area with our EL population that we need to address and and one of the big shifts is uh the EL program review, which um is going to generate, I think, a a really um a great opportunity to start um working
069through some of those uh gaps. Um so, uh we we did a lot of work on an institute day with our EL teachers and Kota teachers, especially at Samberg and Stag um because that's a new model for them for the next year. um information coming back from um all involved was was positive uh which is always great when you have kind of a significant change people feeling good about it is is a good thing. So uh really proud of the efforts that were that were done uh within our EL program review and looking forward to seeing the results. Uh if you jump to page five. Um so the um uh obviously we spent a lot of time in this month unpacking ACT results although ACT made a little bit more complex wrong results and we're
070waiting for the new results to be right. Um so we're still unpacking that. You know nothing could be without a little bit of a pickup here and there. >> Do we know do we know when the new scores are coming out? June 2nd is when we're supposed to receive. >> Thank you. >> Y >> like I said, I probably shouldn't be presenting this information. I I do none of the work, but I get to present it to you all. Um but um I do want to give compliments. Our curriculum advisory committee and division chairs um put together a six-year uh cycle u for continuous improvements within our uh curriculum process. Um and and you could see the details in terms of the phases of the process. Uh all I can tell you is as a
071superintendent it's it's a much needed thing that we haven't had for a very long time. Um we kind of uh pardon the expression we kind of use a dartboard approach in previous years and I think Anita and her team has done a wonderful job putting a systems in place um that has uh a lot of um opportunity for us to continually revise and and update our curriculum. Um again one of our pillars is relevant curriculum uh responsible responsive excuse me curriculum. Um, and this is really a big step forward to make sure our curriculum is always uh fresh, updated, and and connecting to kids uh post-secary opportunities. Um, so you can see there'll be some piloting process with some of our courses in multiple departments for next year. Um, so we're looking forward to that
072as well. Uh, the last thing I'll highlight is on the very last page, page 13 of 13. Uh we did a lot of work this month uh in terms of wrapping up, if you will, our curriculum, excuse me, pardon me, our strategic framework process. Um next month at the board meeting, we will be unveiling a lot of the things that we'll be looking forward to as well as infusing that within our uh committee um uh processes as well. Uh but things that I think you'll anticipate um I think at this point in in the process our teams whether it's administrative staff um to some extent students um have looked at what we've accomplished with our freshman on track process as uh an opportunity to maybe offboard that as an area of focus because we put
073systems in place and the results are there. Uh but as we have discussed um at at great lengths, obviously ACT is presenting a challenge that we think um might take the place of freshmen on track. Uh so we're going to do some work in the next couple weeks within our leadership team actually Monday. Uh we have uh all of our administrators together at Andrew High School to start to go through that process. But uh we uh hope to bring to you in a month from now um some some of the trajectory some of the the trajectories that we're taking um that might be a little bit different. um including offboarding uh freshman on track and revising our teacher retention metric with also consideration for uh how we might uh move forward with ACT. Um so
074again I can answer any questions from uh the information provided. This is my last presentation of this kind for this year and as you all know um and we'll talk a little bit about it in close session in terms of process. Um this will actually feed into the board goal setting meeting that'll take place a month from now as well. Um where we will refresh, revise and refocus some of those goals based on the board's um uh f board's interest. >> Thank you. Any other questions? >> All right. Hoya wasformational board comments. We'll start with member Kelly. >> I always do that. >> I I look at the glasses. first read. So we don't have >> we don't Yes, we do have to have a motion >> motion or motion. >> Right. >> Okay. >>
075Could I have a motion? I move that the school board approve the first reading of board policies 2200 2250 2260 4165 7130 720 750 7100 7185 7240 7260 7300 890 530 550 5250 5330 7220 7230 7280 665 6100 6145 6170 6180 22 220 and 214 40 E. >> Second. >> Who' you give it to? >> Sue. >> Okay. >> Sue. >> Yep. >> All in favor? >> I I >> I motion passes. All right. Next. Boya. Informational board comments. Member Kelly. >> Um, just one comment. I uh just got a text from Miss Spendellski today about meeting June 10th. Uh and I just think it's really cool that you know uh there's so much work going behind the scenes and we'll be meeting soon just to talk about where the district is headed and I
076just appreciate you guys taking the extra effort. That's a lot. I'm sure last thing you want to do is have another meeting. Um but I appreciate you guys taking the time. >> Thank you. Yeah. Um I'm glad the weather uh cooperated for us for our three commencement ceremonies last week. Um obviously congratulations to all those students and their families. Um but especially all of our 230 staff as well. Um our committee members um my fellow board members as well. Um just what a privilege it was to be a part of those celebrations and uh welcome our new member uh board member Mohamad. He's going to be a great board member and excited not to be the rookie anymore. Good point. >> Uh I just kind of offer what Tim said. Just congratulate all three schools
077on the great job with the graduations. Uh everything went very smooth. Uh the weather held out for us. I know Monday was very questionable, but it evaporated and it turned out to be a great day and uh you know once again uh everybody did a wonderful job. So, uh, you know, we should be proud of what we do every year and, uh, thank God we had good weather this year. So, that's all I got. >> Right. Member Don, >> May is a month of celebration. Um, as we are winding up a year when we started out with the scholarship nights at all three schools. um to see our students get the scholarships and to hear the great work that they did to earn those scholarships, the number of service hours, their grade point averages, um
078their dedication to their schoolwork and community is a great pride to our district. Uh and then we can swing into the graduation where we are um going to each school and having them walk the stage. Um it is such an honor. it is um it is the cherry on the Sunday as a board member to be able to present those uh diplomas. So uh it was a wonderful three schools. Thankfully again the weather worked out. Um, we had a a difficult year this year um as a board with numerous things going on and I'm very proud that our teachers and our support staff and our administrators and everyone that focuses on the kids so they can do what they're here to do um to learn to participate in co-curriculars to do athletics to be a
079part of the school community. So, I am very proud of um what our co kids were able to accomplish and I thank all those um from uh the top on down that made that possible as we went through this year. So, thank you very much. >> Member Kazard. >> Uh in addition to welcoming Mo to the board, I just uh want to say how grateful we are for all the applications that we got for that vacancy. um to see that we have so many people interested in serving our community and serving our school district. It's uh inspiring and so we appreciate everyone that um made the effort and especially the finalists that we brought in to interview. Um even though you didn't get appointed um it's it's great to see that much interest in our
080communities. So thanks to those people. >> Member Hermad. >> So thanks for the welcomes and I appreciate being here. Uh being appointed in May really was like baptism by fire a little bit. It was kind of a lot going on, but honestly, everyone was so helpful and supportive. I really appreciate every single one of you reaching out and providing any sort of uh help and assistance in any way that I needed. So, that was really helpful. Um, also, I noticed in the first month, obviously being May with a lot going on, ju just how how much we appreciate what the administration and staff does, um, especially during graduation. I think that goes underappreciated too often. So, I just want to say thank you for that as well. >> And I want to say thank you.
081I also um in addition to the other events, I did the trifecta and got to see all three school plays, Matilda, Mean Girls, and Mama Mia. And each one was outstanding. And as much as we try to attend events that could that could be all in all consuming because there's something going on every night. So when I see the building principles here and know when you're talking about going to see the Mario Kart competition and the and your game that you give a lot of yourselves all of our staff and administration at every level beyond the clock you put in you bleed black and gold blue and gold and orange and blue. So thank you and every day it's proud to serve as president. So >> all right with that being said we have monthly
082calendar of events that's informational. So next, if I could have I will read this. I move to enter into executive session to consider information regarding the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of a specific employee or legal council for the public body. to discuss student disciplinary cases, to discuss matters relating to placement of individual students in special education programs, and to consider other matters relating to individual students. To discuss collective negotiating matters or deliberating concerning salary schedules for one or more classes of employees and to discuss pending or probable litigation against, affecting, or on behalf of the public body. >> Second. >> Okay. >> Well, okay. I mean, she's not supposed to make a motion as the president. >> Well, she can't. No, she can still make a motion. >> I've done it before,
083but if you >> No, it's fine. >> We We had the discussion a lot. >> Okay. Because I've done it. I know Chris has done it this a couple times. All right. Lisa, I want to take the role. >> Member. >> Yes. >> Member. >> Yes. >> Member D. >> Yes. >> Member Dan. >> Yes. >> Kelly. >> Yes. >> Member. >> Yes. >> Member. Yes. Okay. All right. >> I voted twice. >> You voted twice. All right. It's 8:10. Um, we are going into close session. We will come back out and vote and that will not be live. >> And I will we will check on that to make sure. >> No, I thought the president
