014joining us from Guyana and she is a unique individual ual uh she wears some outstanding outfits every day as evidenced tonight uh she is very friendly outgoing uh has made a lot of friends as she has been here and has been a true Delight in her classes working with her teachers and the other students so congratulations jazaria our 11th grade student is nandini gotra [Applause] and nandini could not be here this evening but she also is one of our quiet leaders that we have in school uh when I told her she was selected as student of the month she was very surprised and said well why me and I said because all of the teachers have great things to say about you she's one of the top students but does it in a very quiet
015unassuming Manner and she is just an a fantastic out standing individual so we're happy for our 11th grade student of the month nandra and finally our 12th grade student of the month Tyler [Applause] Mayer Tyler is a senior at dellan High School uh he also is a quiet leader throughout the school uh he is heavily involved in the in dellan high school he's involved in the fall plays and spring musicals uh he is one of our top students he reminded me that when he was named the student of the m month that name that made it the trifecta with his two other friends that won it this year as seniors as well so we were happy to do it uh Tyler has big things ahead of him in the spring as he has been of
016Varsity tennis player the last few years and will be so again this year leading the tennis team who has shown huge Improvement the last few years and he and the team are going to have a great season he also works in the recck department over the summer for years originally as a camper and now one of the people who runs it with Kelly Cedar over the summer and he does a fantastic job so congratulations Tyler [Applause] parents thank you congratulations students congratulations you're making us very proud this year we're very happy to have been able to recognize you this month um we do have a board meeting uh ahead of us so uh we're certainly uh you're welcome to stay if you'd like but uh we will also break for about five minutes if you'd
017like to to take the time to to head out at this point so thank you and congratulations again [Applause] know for e she love you she did she did e e good evening welcome um and wanted to take a moment again to congratulate all the students who were just recognized this evening we are very proud of their work and their accomplishments so keep it up um I did want to mention uh uh I know there are a lot of things that are going on but I did want to mention recently we had a talent show and um very successful I know there's lots going on but I had to call this out because just so in case you weren't aware the event raised over $1,800 um and as I understand it and please Miss Moore
018correct me if I misspeak um that PTO contributed to the balance of that to make it an even 2,000 which was then split evenly between the choir and the band so which is amazing that's an amazing thing thank you to PTO president Nicole Moore talent show chair Rebecca Stark gendrano the whole PTO membership Mr SATA miss pieno Mr petsinger our custodial staff the student volunteers the supportive parents the engaged audience and of course the Dillan students who shared their talents with us to make the E the event such a great success so thank [Applause] you cannot miss that that's huge I got it I got the numbers right num right all right better next year oh yeah that's yeah yeah we'll do it we'll do it all right so um just a couple other things
019to mention so again staying healthy you know that the weather's cold now temperatures dropping we got to underscore that healthy kids and healthy healthy kids means healthy schools which means a healthy community and um as of the week ending February 3rd there were 17 seven covid-19 outbreaks and one nonflu viral respiratory disease outbreak reported in 23 K through2 schools located in Atlantic Bergen Mercer Mercer Burlington Mercer pic Somerset and Union counties not middle sex unfortunately though um as of the week ending February 10th in the flu was reallyu influenza activity was really high Statewide um there were two confirmed influenza Associated pediatric deaths reported the season so far and of the 94 influenza outbreaks we've had so far this season 14 were just in the last three weeks so we're kind of like at a
020peak and I guess kind of getting over it and heading downwards we're not out of the woods yet but we're getting there um but that means know we you know we need to keep encouraging to the common sense practices you know like um washing hands well covering up when sneezing keeping sick kids home keeping current with vaccinations and minimizing to minimize the spread of infectious diseases and uh that could really impact our our students and and their um ability to to to learn um February monthly celebrations what do we have so of course Black History Month is this month uh there also Lunar New Year there's Al there was also National Freedom Day at the beginning of the month on February 1st which Comm commemorates the signing of the 13th Amendment which abolished slavery in
0211865 and again as I mentioned last time the school board recognition month which was signed uh by Governor Murphy last year or two years ago sorry so all this again is to underscore the importance of diversity equity and inclusion in the fabric of our daily lives and the impact that has on our community open honest and Equitable communication that's respectful positive supportive fair and most of all kind goes a long way in strengthening a community so uh we are about 4 months until our seniors walk the 2024 graduation stage and there are a great many things happening in our district and Community I would encourage you to be an active part of it thanks everyone for your time and listening I'll keep it short here moving on to uh Mr Ross thank you Dr gendrano
022so we'll start the superintendent Report with the student representative uh report so I'll turn it over to Sophia hello can you hear me okay so now that most college acceptances have been sent out the scholarship applications are in full swing and most of the seniors are like really ankled deep in work and essays right now and I think all of us are excited to finally be done with all the applying process and enjoy the rest of our senior year speaking of scholarships ardan varchenko was just named a National Merit Scholarship finalist which is awesome cool there are a couple fundraisers happening right now the black student union just had a fundraiser where by scanning a QR code you can order some delicious Jamaican patties uh class of 26 have uh 30 burgers and Carl's Corner
023tomorrow uh at 11:00 a.m. to 900 p.m. and the seniors have the third annual volleyball tournament Friday March 1st this friend maer always attracts a lot of people and gets students really amped up and into the school spirit there are always so many students signed up and we anticipate more to come my class is hoping to beat this really strong team of Juniors that won last year and they they they're talking about this comeback like I I'm I'm no that's not g to happen the drama club's musical Greece is coming up in just over three weeks now and the show is slowly but surely coming together the club's biggest money-making fundraiser the scoop dinner is this Thursday the 22nd from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. so if you don't feel like cooking for a night or
024SP an arm and a leg out somewhere else you can get some delicious homemade food for $150 a scoop there is also a grease sing along Along movie night on March 8th to get everyone excited for the upcoming show and if you don't know it's March 14th 15th and 16th if you want to mark that on your calendars last week there was an assembly where Mr Dr Mikey Fallon shared his own struggles and life experiences through his acting and storytelling I can definitely say it was very engaging engaging and impressive assembly and I no doubt would want to see him again I know my friends and I couldn't stop talking about it and it was very moving and Ruckers also had two assemblies there was one related to cyber bullying and how your words comments
025body language and physical actions can affect others not just in person but also over the internet and their other assembly taught us how about cyber safety and how you should be careful of what you're doing online and what you share with others you never know what piece of information could get you in trouble or put you in danger sports are about to come to an end or already are ended I'm not sure the girls basketball team tied for first in their division and they ended with a record of 17 wins to eight losses and the guys basketball team had a tough season and should have and they should have one game left I'm pretty sure but they're currently tied with 11 wins and 11 losses so I I think that's a win in my books
026yeah thank you awesome thank you Sophia um so I'll just uh touch upon a couple of additional items and then just circle back to a couple things that Sophia mentioned um so first of all we have the enrollment report enrollment actually has leveled off a little bit this month I think this is the first month since I've been here that uh it has not increased so we're down slightly we have 41 prek students 96 kindergarten students which is down one we have 89 first graders 97 second graders 903d graders 100 fourth graders 119 fifth graders 123 6th graders 105 7th graders 111 8th graders 103 9th graders 122 10th graders 93 11th grade students and 88 12th grade students so current District enrollment um prek to 12 is 1,377 students which is about 50 or
027so above last year so we're we'll we'll look to see what happens in the next couple of months but it's it's nice to at least have leveled off a little bit um and you know whether that's a trend or not we shall we shall see um I want to shout out the folks who have been recognized by the DEA um for uh make a difference Monday um and if you don't remember this is a weekly shout out that um the Ed Association has shared it's a staff member who's made an impact in the building um it's a super fun wonderful thing that sent to everybody in the district um since our last board meeting there have been three make a difference Monday shoutouts the first is Mr Valenzuela who is a high school math department
028teacher um we also had Mr guer this was the week of the 12th um we all know Mr Geer uh Faber music um and so much more um and then this week um is Debbie prek who is a par professional at Faber and so those three individuals um get a shout out that goes out to the whole District staff um get recognized by your colleagues which is certainly the best type of recognition so congratulations to those staff members um we have a budget uh update brief you know uh a brief update we've been talking a lot about the budget um internally we've also been talking about it in many of the Committees the governor's um budget address is scheduled for next Tuesday as of now so we anticipate by next Wednesday the 28th we should
029have a sense of what our state aid will be for the 2425 school year um our board meeting schedule for the 2024 calendar year is specifically designed to ensure that we have the right pacing of our meetings for the budget and so our next meeting is is actually relatively soon it's March 12th and at that meeting we will provide a tentative budget presentation we have been working very closely with all of the um budget managers we have a good sense of what the needs are and where the areas of improvement can be um or you know growth of Staff or other types of things so we'll share the tentative version of that in um at the March meeting which is just a couple weeks away um with regard to uh ardan varchenko the um the
030merit scholarship program is um highly competitive um across the country and it's based on the PSAT um exam that students take in 11th grade so there are many steps that have to be sort of gone through in order for a student to be recognized as a finalist um but basically in terms of uh how important this is or the type of recognition um a student who has been recognized as a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship is basically the within the top 1% of all um High School seniors in terms of uh the the numbers so this really is an amazing accomplishment we're very proud of of ardan and her representation of of dellan high school so we're excited to see what happens next for her um and they award um scholarships to certain a
031certain percentage of the finalists so we'll get more information about that and certainly happy to report more on on that moving forward with the end of Athletics um we also had some students and some staff members who are recognized um for for good work within their particular Sports so Ryan Hutchins and uh vibert Reynolds were named all gold division for boys basketball uh Sophie Jimenez and Wendy wall were named all gold division for the girls basketball team and um Keith connory was named um coach of the year for the gold division um girls basketball so congratulations to those students and uh to Mr connory coach connory for for his recognition as well we have uh schoolwide Title One stakeholder meeting taking place next week and this is part of our movement towards um having Faber
032uh considered a schoolwide title one um program what that means um again is that we have funding that can be widely used throughout the school for all students and it frees up our ability to provide interventions and provide financial support in the areas that we need so it really it opens up our our available use of those funds so there's a stakeholder engagement process and that's really what we're going through the second meeting will be next week and that's being led by uh Mr drapkin we have a couple of Department of Education grants that were uh moving towards two of them are on tonight's agenda we have an AP course expansion Grant which we we've already submitted and the goal of that is to get um funding to provide additional um professional development to the
033teachers of AP courses and also to provide additional AP courses to the extent that they can fit within the schedule so that's a technical service a technical support type of Grant we have uh a grant called expanding access to climate change education and New Jersey student learning standards through interdisciplinary learning and Community resilience projects Yep this is actually the name of the grant uh and I just I wanted to read it because it's such an absurd name um there isn't um I I can't even try to make it up this is the climate change Grant as we've been talking about it and um with our new stem lab we were able to receive funding for Hydroponics so we have a Hydroponics wall um within the the fa stem lab and we're looking to basically add
034hydroponic um Gardens throughout the walls of the Faber preschool Edition so that as students can sort of walk through they can interact with you know live plants and obviously having plants around is just good for for sort of everyone um and with that there's obviously curricular tie-ins and other sorts of things we've also talked a fair amount about elementary Gardens and if you've been in the fa Courtyard you know that there are garden beds that are already there um that were used in the past and so talking about Reviving those and trying to get students student programming and science classes to engage with that is something that we'll look for um for next year so very excited about that Grant the third Grant is expanding computer science um High School courses opportunities which in this
035grant is also due by the end of the month so the department has just really come out with this slew of sort of technical support grants so um Mr Santiago is working with M drapkin on completing this Grant and this is part of our redesign of K12 um stem education we have have a consultant uh Jason ERD that you've heard a lot about who we continue to work with and this is going to be another you know 50 to $75,000 of additional support to be able to to help that work so very excited about the grants hopefully we'll get one to all three of them um and you know provide more revenue for the district to you know improve programming for students um and then the last thing is the um the sessions that Sophia
036spoke about the student sessions for for um cyber bullying and social media safety are part of a three um a three training package that we have with nj4 s which is the Statewide student Support Services um sort of Hub and spoke model of services so we have one coming up that's that's still remaining these are next week There's a student session on the 27th which is interpersonal and Community relationship skills and then there's one the day before that which is the same session that's delivered to parents so that's the 26th for parents that's going to be virtual at 6 pm and then 27th for students which is going to be delivered in English and in Spanish as well and with that that concludes the superintendent report hi Mr dougen good evening Mr dougen okay thank
037you Mr Ross So moving on to or any any questions we good okay moving on to uh item number nine public comments so the board invites at this time um uh public comment on agenda items only from members of our community in accordance with board policy 0167 public comment sections are intended to provide an opportunity for members of the public to express themselves on school matters of community interest the board and administration will be taking notes during public comment but will not provide substantive responses to questions or concerns raised by individual speakers if necessary the superintendent May provide a brief response after the entire public comment period is completed the board appreciates and welcomes feedback from the community but is not at Liberty to engage in a back and forth dialogue with members of the
038public during this portion of the meeting prior to making your public comment please make sure your name and Municipal uh please state your name and M municipality please note that all statements must be directed to the presiding officer please come to the microphone at this time if you would like to make any comments on agenda items only last call okay moving on to item 10 uh education uh education committee report Mr dougen are you okay yes okay awesome turning uh turning the floor over to Mr dougen for the Ed uh as committee chair for the education committee the education committee met on February 12th and discussed a number of items including an update on a wide range of curriculum and instruction items presented by Miss drapkin including vertical alignment of ela and Mathematics in grade
0396 through 12 the starting of the Spanish language Heritage class at LMS the upcoming adoption of a new core resource for middle school and high school mathematics which will be supported by an introductory PD in late April the second title one parent event which will be held on March 7th with the theme of March Madness and the second schoolwide Title One stakeholder meeting which will take place February 27th and will involve a review of current goals and datas also discussed was information about testing related to the Seal of biliteracy the district submission of the AP course expansion Grant to the NJ dooe the district's upcoming submission of the climate change Grant which is slated for the end of February and the differentiated PD sessions scheduled for March 8th which will now be moved move to
040another date later in the year due to the calendar change related to inclement weather that is all okay thank you Mr dougen uh moving on to item number 11 education action items looking for a motion to approve items 11 a through e as a block move 11 a through e second okay open for question questions and comments um i' just like to note that for uh B this is the uh second reading for those those two um uh those two documents p2270 as well as P&R 5116 and first reading for um uh the board policy and regulations en closure uh PNR 5111 questions comments okay last call all right um did you say you discuss the calendar with the inclement weather no just the PD date was being changed you got to use the microphone
041just so that the people at home can hear it no it was just the PD day had to be moved because it was a snow day right on okay any other questions comments okay uh Mr Pepe can you please call the RW Mr Anderson yes Mrs Condit yes Mr dougen yes Dr jeno yes Mrs Howard yes Mr satoi yes Mrs Shep yes Mr Walker yes motion passes okay excellent moving on to item number 12 Personnel discussion items um so um I'm I'm the chair of that committee so I'll read that read out here so the Personnel committee met on February 13th in attendance were myself U Mr Anderson Mrs Shep and Mr Ross and we discussed a number of items including personal requests related to the 2024 2025 District budget updated job descriptions related to
042District level secretarial positions policies and regul s we discussed open positions in the district as well as a number of confidential items uh so that uh that concludes so what the readout for that at this time now moving on to item number 13 Personnel action items um looking for a motion to approve items 13 a through M as a block move 13 a through M second open for questions comments I'll just I'll just speak briefly about um items J and K so item J is the uh abolishment of a board policy this is a board policy that is uh right now in conflict with some of the non-aligned contracts that we have so um the contracts are um you know the the language of the contract is what we want to move forward with so
043we're abolishing this policy so it doesn't create any confusion item K you have the job descriptions in front of you I believe those have also been posted now on the website um and these are uh the split of a position that we currently have um in place to provide a second um secretarial support position um in the area primarily within the area of need of curriculum and instruction we've really expanded the curriculum instruction offerings that we've been able to to provide this uh you know since m drapkin came on board and since last school year we feel that we need um uh additional support in that area and so we've sort of split those positions so that one uh secretarial position is dedicated to cni and then the other is dedicated to additional support being
044provided to the business administrator and so um so that's the the purpose of those and obviously you can read through the job descriptions and if you have any questions certainly happy to answer them questions comments I'll just say that I I like to keep uh every time coming back here and remarking it how I love the fact that there are so many PD items on the agenda uh 25 this time um I it's yeah I just think it's great that we're consistently doing this questions comments guys okay um Mr Pepe can you please call the role Mr Anderson yes Mrs Condit yes Mr dougen yes Dr gendrano yes Mrs Howard yes Mr saoi yes Mrs Shep yes Mr Walker yes motion passes okay wonderful moving on to item number uh 14 uh operations I'll turn

046lot of weight uh within the state from the administrative side um I'll be attending my first meeting of Garden State Coalition of schools tomorrow um so I'm not 100% sure that the district will be joining but this board resolution allows us to join in the event that this does seem like a a meaningful um use of time and and funding okay and just to reiterate the uh items andf for the new Grant applications that Mr Ross was talking about earlier um any questions comments okay Mr Pepe please call the braw Mr Anderson yes Mrs Condit yes Mr Dugen yes Dr gendrano yes Mrs Howard yes Mr saoi yes Mrs Shep yes Mr Walker yes motion passes all right wonderful moving right along uh moving on to item number 16 old business is there any business
047from previous meetings we need to bring back up rehash okay I'll take silence as a no moving on to 17 new business and is there anything new that anyone would like to bring up uh in this section okay moving on to item 18 president's remarks part do uh no I don't have anything to add here more than what I had said earlier um and at this point now moving on to item 19 public comments the board invites public comments on any issue any topic from members of our community in accordance with the board policy 0167 public comment sections are intended to provide an opportunity for members of the public to express themselves on school matters of community interest the board Administration will be taking notes during public comment but will not provide substantive responses to
048questions or concerns raised by individual speakers if necessary the superintendent May provide a brief response after the entire public comment period is completed the board appreciates and welcomes feedback from the community but is not at Liberty to engage in back and forth dialogue with members of the public during this portion of the meeting prior to making your public comment please state your name and municipality please note that all statements must be directed to the presiding officer please come to the microphone at this time if you'd like to make comments on any issue any topic last call for public comments okay so uh item 20 Executive session so the Dillan Board of Education will now adjourn into executive session to discuss items that fall within specific exceptions to the open public meetings act C njsa 10
0494-12 B the confidential matters discussed by the board during this executive session include items related to Personnel um any discussion that does not need to uh remain confidential we made public as soon as it is practical minutes of the executive session will not be disclosed until the need for confidentiality no longer exists all individuals who may be discussed in the executive session have been adequately notified action will not take place after the conclusion of the executive session uh so we'll you know head to adjournment after the executive session so at this time I'd like a a motion to move into executive session please move to Executive second all those in favor I I opposed okay we are out see you guys in March e e for
