oh god she doesn't have any change it works it works says what do we get good evening everyone and welcome to stag and uh tonight we get to meet our three student representatives so we're looking forward to that um but uh let's begin tonight with the roll call please denver o'sullivan here member murphy peterson here member o'connor here member heartick here member dalton here member gracias here member seratori here all present and accounted for all right do we have any amendments no sir okay then the first item of business is uh dr nolteam who has a few comments that he would like to make at this time yes thank you so we are now officially reopened for school so our first couple weeks uh were uh well one is is it was really remarkable to

see the kids return uh in full force our staff returned the festivities that went on the activities that the kids were engaged in and the energy was was exceptional um myself and many of the district office folks were able to be in the buildings on numerous occasions to see freshman first day and to see how the lunchroom looked and how passing period was going and get in and out of some classes and um all in all given given the journey that we've had from essentially march of 2019 to or 2020 to now um where we do have all of our kids back in the building and our staff is ready to go teaching in a in a mostly traditional way has been um has been a huge success so far uh those successes are never

met without challenges right so we have um a lot of uh things that we're still working through as we open a school year in a very unique circumstance i i reported to the board on numerous occasions that we're still doing our best to try to shore up our transportation situation um you know that is as you have probably seen that is a kind of a national crisis it's definitely a statewide crisis in terms of bus transportation services bus drivers specifically so um we're still continuing to work work through routes we're still continuing to try to onboard drivers uh to get fully staffed as as quickly as possible but that's that's definitely been um one of the challenges that we faced um and clearly um you know staffing at the support staff level is is a

constant process trying to make sure we're fully staffed with special services aids dean's aides and other staff members but we are essentially as of tonight going to be fully staffed and our teaching staff our teachers have been an incredible support network for our students their spirits are tremendously high i have not had one conversation in the hallway or in passing with a teacher or support staff member who is not exceptionally glad to be back doing what they love to do with the kids that they love to work with we are really looking at a new world when it comes to what we were managing last year with close contact uh quarantining um and things of that nature um the two things that we were really different from last year um one is that the the

guidelines change for our favor with regards to social distancing particularly if both individuals are masked you know that's helped reduce significantly the number of close contacts we would have otherwise had in the past week we did have 25 students last week that were held to close contact it would probably be closer to 65 without those mitigations changing to our favor in addition to the the fact that we removed several individual students from having to quarantine because of their vaccination status uh and then the third piece is launching the vianex testing has removed several students from from that that potential need to to quarantine so those have been um been successes we're still not wanting to have 25 close contacts having to quarantine so week by week by week it'll be a kind of a measurement

for us to see how many students we could get down below a certain amount of time because they are missing class time uh this week monday we launched our first uh version of our covid dashboard unfortunately we had three of our our seven metrics that were considered in the yellow category based on cdc guidance we had four categories in orange so that puts us in orange as a school district for the next uh hopefully short period of time ultimately there's really two things that are impacted one which has not changed ever since the governor declared a mass mandate for public schools on august 4th that would have been one mitigation we would have shifted towards in orange we're already there because of the governor's mandate uh the second piece is we we do need to

then be more conscientious within the lunchrooms of guaranteeing six feet of distance between students eating lunch because clearly they're on math while they're eating lunch so those guidelines are important to to try to adhere to most of the other guidelines um were were not major changes but those two are uh and another update which um unfortunately is fresh off the press and something i could say within the meetings and in groups that i networked with within the the the world of school leaders superintendents and others um did not find out until a few texts at about 6 15 this morning that we were getting a press conference today at 10 p.m 10 a.m from governor pritzker which is now um uh adding it a layer of challenge with regards to now our staff uh has

to be vaccinated by uh by september 5th so we're working through that now i wish i could unveil a plan to you tonight but between 10 a.m this morning and 7 p.m tonight we still have some things to work out so we're in the process of doing so um but that is that is just kind of a a signal of how many changes and how quickly they happen and our staff has been great our administrative team has been outstanding of of rolling with those changes and making sure it goes back to our original reopening plan 100 of our days intact 100 of our kids in seats activities intact and all those things are are what we focus on continually so thank you for the time and and uh that's just a quick update all right

i hope well thank you and uh once again it's great the kids are back that's what we want and hopefully as time goes on uh things will get better so all right then uh our next uh item on the agenda is the uh consent agenda so at this time i would entertain a motion uh to approve the consent agenda i move that the school board approved the consent agenda as presented motion made by member murphy peterson seconded by member o'sullivan uh to accept the consent agenda any comments or questions all right let us vote remember o'sullivan yes member murphy peterson yes member gracias yes member yes the motion passes and the old business okay and we will get to the board committee reports and our first report is uh the education committee and uh kate

uh who subbed in very well for pat and it was a uh quite an evening so uh kate it's all yours well thank you um so we met um education committee met um we talked about initially the school improvement plan um dr nolting gave a transition update um back then we had just received word that masking was going to be mandated um a lot of our plan that has obviously been ongoing um but the foundational elements of our plan have never like the goal has never changed uh which include 100 on-site attendance with no interruptions in class time curricular co-curricular programs or social events and to minimize student or staff absenteeism due to illness or quarantine and to increase and maintain a high degree of local control we have been advocating for that all along

although sometimes we don't always get what we want mitigation specifically masking social distancing and testing protocols will be adjusted when community and campus metrics allow as dr nolting just indicated in his report this is all based on cdc guidance and instructions from the state superintendent and the isb um we did have a public comment which was nice uh we had three individuals there we had a pretty lively conversation um all very um it was a very nice conversation people were very respectful of one another a common common issue that we have is parents being concerned about students having to wear masks so i think we clarified that for them and the roles that we have to follow and penalties that we face if we don't so everything was i think happy at the end then

dr mcmillan talked about curriculum and instruction specifically summer school she provided the committee with a summer school update accelerated and credit recovery courses were offered to students in an online format as well as in person non-credit driver at an extended school year um an established in-person help center it's carl sandberg high school was available for students who asked for help or students assigned to come due to falling behind or pacing at or below 70 percent summer school was a success with a pass rate of 96 percent that's pretty awesome dr mcmillan also shared with the committee the draft proposal to add a co-op girls wrestling team beginning with the 2021-22 winter season um they have a number of um female athletes that are interested in participating and andrew is going to be the host site

um the district has proposed a budget which obviously will need some staff and coaches and officials and some equipment but we're all heading for that so pretty excited about that and then we also talked about some policies we did the first reading of several policies and um in addition we also talked about the five-year review of a couple of policies that we kind of look at from time to time um using animals in the education program and our title one programs so we had a pretty lively meeting a lot of um uh conversation a lot of people contributing so uh it was great and we joined the meeting at 8 10 and our next meeting is september 1st at 7 pm in the district office any questions for kate all right kate thank you again

and uh you did a great job that night i think in all the years i've been here i don't even remember public comments at a uh board committee meeting so uh thank you very much all right uh and now we will move on to student services and melissa yes hi um we covered a lot in this month's student services we started with dr nothing he provided us an update on the district opening plan and we'll go into all that since we've already covered it twice now um the professional development opportunity we added more professional development opportunities um the goal is to provide support for our students and their needs coming back in uh into the buildings uh we also are using binex diagnostic tests which are elective on-site cova tests these are open to all

students and all staff who may have been exposed to covet this test will help us with less quarantine time and out of school for students and staff if if elected they could test on day one three five and seven plus we have added extra help in our intervention room it's been set up to help those students who do have to quarantine and miss some instructional time mr ovando and dr dreyer presented professional development activities that ran over the summer the focus supporting our students now that they have returned to our campus the topic was what is trauma understanding trauma how it impacts student learning what practices to engage in class with and we partnered with better lesson trauma informed workshops for staff teachers and pps participated dr dreyer has created the trauma informed practices cohort

there are 50 people from all of our buildings and these practices are important in the classroom because they will encourage a sense of belonging and a sense of safety for the students mr riley updated us on the pals program which is open to the speed students school links in panorama school links is now replacing the long-standing career cruising program school links is interactive forward-thinking and student-focused all students can all students can check out career options help with selecting courses there's a parent dashboard and students can use this platform to request letters of recommendation from teachers they can build resumes and portfolios and there are internships listed on this site so this is very exciting and this is this is a long time coming so we're excited to launch this panorama is a platform that stores

our interventions the pps team will utilize this for sel survey data and it'll all be under one platform which would allow us to really dive deep into our data and and uh have a have a better handle on our um [Music] our surveys this replaces the dap survey mr ovando presented our partnership with moraine valley uh for the first summer session the the students that enrolled in this earned a credit at moraine valley this is a bridge program for el students and it exposed them to college 101 and it was highly successful and we're really excited about our partnership with moraine valley mr riley gave us an update on our esy special ed summer programs that ran at stag this summer these programs help extend the school year for altima students and help maintain their

skills there's theme days daily living goals this this year this summer was the largest group to date with 57 students seven teachers and 22 paraprofessionals it's a community-based instruction with traffic signals buses cooking consumer math and of course our ever famous charlie charger dog treat business the bridge program had 14 students eligible from the 8th grade ieps offering instruction and support in reading and math this helps their executive functioning skills and communication skills as they transition into high school uh then we went into the six-minute solution lisa shulman presented an overview on this program which helps students k-12 with their fluency needs we covered house bill 40 which extends students eligibility for all all iep to continue the full school year even if they turn 22 mid-school year house bill 2748 extends eligibility for a

student who turned 22 during the covent pandemic in the first three months when the schools were closed we had two policy reviews and then dr nolting shared with us um the passing of bill donovan and we recognized him and the effect that it had on our our sandberg community he was a beloved member of that family and he will be greatly missed and our next meeting is september 14th okay any questions from melissa all right uh i do want to just comment on the esli program every year it gets better and better and i mean we go back to when the summer program was they went to the zoo where they went to the park and now they're actually learning skills and and and uh it's just a great program and every year it's just

better so i i love it and it's great too that the attendance keeps improving too so obviously everybody's hearing about it and it's it's fantastic so i really applaud the people involved with that great job okay and then last but not least building and finance sue another busy meeting thank you um building and finance met um on august 17th and we had a nice turnout with our committee members uh all the new principals or all the principals were in attendance along with dr wheaton who is going to be joining us from time to time at our meeting and then we had mr steven and mr lavelle share their information as well mr keating as we always start out with our projects uh he shared with us the committee that not all the projects have been

completed uh due to material shortages that are going on and delays in labor so um we are not too far off of our deadlines but there were some shortages and some delays i'm going to keep some of that for him to share with us later on so he can give us a more up-to-date report but he did share with us that this solar project is completed and currently working as sandberg and stagg and andrew had a defective part that caused a delay and was probably up and running at this time he can let us know that for sure one of the nice things that was reported the system um i'm sorry stag was approved for solar for all program this is a grant that [Music] you need to have specific credentials in order to qualify

getting this grant will allow the district to be paid up front instead of having the money that we get for these grants um brought to us in installments so that way we don't have to lay out that capital and we'll have that money up front so that was good news to hear we're glad that stag qualified for that the roof phase ii project has begun at all three schools and was close to completion i expect when mr keating comes up and reports he will tell us that our schools are complete or near completion the elevator renovations at samberg is complete and the elevator run renovation at andrew was completed but waiting for inspection these will be the last elevators that need to be updated in our district they are now all ada compliant and brought

up to the um standards of today we were reported that the hvac pool and gym update we received a new bid package for that there was an increase more than what we had expected due to various reasons that expectation was something that we expected just due to how much work is going on out there and the demand for getting this work done this is caused also by the ussr's funds we received um we're working on making sure that the funds that we're going to receive are spent within the time frame that we have and so not only us but all school districts are making sure they're using those funds and so there's a big demand to get construction projects done mr lavell shared with us that due to the delays of the cook county office

the county clerk's office we have not received any of our property taxes at this time as you may notice the deadline for your taxes is october 1st so they have moved that back a little bit and due to that we haven't received uh our property tax income at this point this is usually about when we start seeing some monies coming in so that is to be expected we talked about our tentative 2020 budget it's that time of year um this is the second time that we brought that to our committee and we are we have that budget on display we will be voting on that um in our september meeting and if there's any changes that will be brought to our attention before then we talked about transportation and the issues that are going on

with transportation right now with the shortage of drivers as dr nolting brought up how are this how all three schools are affected by that and having the a b routes put in place to make sure we get all of our students in on a timely fashion we are hoping that in september or october that we might find some new drivers coming into our [Music] our bus vendors but time will tell on that we also discussed our hazardous route resolution something that we do every year there were no changes to that they are the same as they were last year we discussed the reopening plan as the other two committees did as well and we talked about a new proposal for girls wrestling um girls wrestling beginning in the winter session of 2021 being that this

is a new sport we would be having all three schools combined at this time and then as the program uh with fun coach and as the program expands then we'll look at adding another coach in the future one other action item that was put into our packet was the district vehicle surplus sale we have a good handful of old vehicles that are on their last legs and we will be putting those into our surplus once approved tonight our next meeting will be on september 20th at the administrative center at 7 00 p.m thank you sue any questions on the women's wrestling um i assume we sent out a survey of interest yes um do you think we're going to feel the full squad probably i assume 12 to 14 weight classes and is there more

than one level is it just one level is it varsity software jv freshman yeah so so we anticipate that this year this first year will be there's 12 weight classes that are approved through the ihsa competition committee uh last year as as uh there was a girls wrestling platform there was 11 girls that were actively participating last year so we're hopeful i think that the survey effect my recollection was roughly about 35 to 50 girls that were interested highly interested in participating district-wide so we're hopeful that we'll at least maintain uh a level um in in wrestling many times when you're kind of building you you match up kids in exhibition matches based on those those kids that are over so i don't anticipate a full jv level this year um at least one full

i think we'll have a full roster right yeah absolutely thanks okay any other questions for sue all right thanks again sue okay then our our next item on the agenda is uh any comments from our teachers association and michelle i i think i saw you out there are you with us okay wonderful next month we'll bring the mic out to you thank you michelle and do we have any okay hi buddy okay thank you for joining us buddy we appreciate it all right and now at this time is one of one of my favorite times of the night is when we have our student representatives to tell us what's going on at the schools and tonight we get to meet our new reps for the year for the first time and normally uh we oh

okay we're gonna have to flip a coin we're gonna have our first trip come on up and i think mr olson probably said you're coming first good evening everyone and welcome back it is my uh honor and pleasure to introduce the bulgarian powerhouse representing stack high school julianna petra now we talked about um our girls wrestling program which we're super excited about having you know bulgarians and wrestling are big i asked juliana if she would be interested um in this her senior year she declined um because what i'm going to share with you right now is she's involved in a lot of things um you know really she's in wynn's symphony she's an advanced percussion i asked what's the difference between advanced percussion and percussion she told me in advance percussion they give you two

sticks um social action club yearbook nhs spanish honors society she's one of our ambassadors here at stag high school and and you know uh not only is she busy in all of these co-curriculars she's really busy during the school day she's one of those students who had opted to not take a lunch um not only not take a lunch but also take a zero hour so that means she takes eight classes here every single day um you know absolutely just amazing her she she loves english particularly particularly she loved english with mr wendell and last year and in the future she's looking to either go into medicine or looking at potentially health care administration she's looking to say relatively local um in in looking at uh you know her post-high school um uh institutions looking

at depaul looking at loyola looking at uh urbai and and really you know that goal that she's shooting for is is northwestern so it is my pleasure to introduce the board of education to juliana petrov [Applause] evening my name is juliana petrov and i'm thrilled to be here tonight sharing the exciting events that have occurred throughout the month of august at sag high school to start off august 2021 has looked very different from august 2020. students have gotten the opportunity to be present on campus for events athletics and most importantly in-person classes august was a busy month for stag students as it was full of events to bring students and the community closer and reconnect the theme for the entire stag community this year is hashtag recharge our school staff and student leaders are making

deliberate efforts to build relationships among students staff families and the community after the physical and social distancing we have all experienced this last year and a half making these personal connections is so important and it is incorporated into everything we are doing every student and staff member at stag even received a recharge t-shirt as a way to show we are all doing this together during the summer our courtyards were renovated to make it possible for staff and student students to use this past pathway as a sidewalk instead of using the hallways teacher teachers have also used these courtyards to take their students outside and even teach class from outside we love going outside for some fresh air while it's the warm-up stag started off by hosting a two-day chargering in event student leaders and staff

welcomed our newest charters class of 2024 class of 2025 and as well as the incoming transfer students onto campus on august 5th and 6th for the afternoon approximately 400 9th and 10th graders were guided by dozens of student volunteers and staff in a scavenger hunt around the school games and much more to prepare them for their first day of school we have also had assemblies each day awesome food a dj and inflatables it was a fantastic day to meet new friends learn about and participate in some of the amazing activities at staff and to get a good feel for the entire campus stag's fall athletic tryouts began on august 9th this year in order to promote engagement and involvement in school for as many students as possible shaggs girls tennis team had no cut tryouts

that focused more on where students as placement on the team would be based on their skills rather than if they would make it at all numbers have significantly increased among our entire fall athletic program at least 490 chargers are involved in fall athletics and we anticipate the numbers will go up even more when our cheer team finishes their second round of trials later this week there are now 132 players in our football program and 53 players in our tennis program for girls alone teachers and staff were welcomed into the school on institute day which was on august 11th and 12th teachers were eager to begin the school year and have the chance to work together to get ready and welcome students back they have done a tremendous job teaching with the challenging circumstances online and

we can't wait to see what this year has in store for us on august 13 we welcome over 600 new students to staff for their first day here they did a trial run of their schedule got to practice using their locker met members of their pps team and even had an assembly and spirit training stag high school ended its first week of school with its orange and blue celebration to kick off the 2021-2022 athletic season fall sports held open practices and skill competitions there were merchandise giveaways and free food and a huge turnout from our students and their families this friday night lights preview was a huge success and we are thrilled to kick off the official season the next morning we had a full house for our fall orange and blue athletic parent meeting

the support from our charger families is phenomenal with the school year beginning we have also started our mandatory drills our school has practiced the evacuation drill in case of a fire we have practiced the lockdown drills for students to familiarize themselves and how to protect each other in case of the threat of an armed intruder we are having another fire drill friday morning to practice evacuating the school as if it were a wheel drill during a passing period we use our advisory time for these exercises and have the chance to ask questions and have discussions about them with our teachers as the first week of school ended teachers have been engaging with students after months of feeling unmotivated and disconnected teachers created activities to connect students with their peers and as the second week approached

we have started learning and participating in class discussions teachers have done an amazing job treating the situation as it were a normal school year which helps students adjust back into their regular school routine on tuesday we had our annual back to school night for our parents to be able to come into the building to follow their child's schedule meet their teachers and learn about the curriculum for each class the parents and staff both reported how nice it was to get to spend time together and the parents couldn't believe how many steps they got in that night our stag marching charter chargers have been practicing all summer for upcoming competitions the marching chargers are having their first current performance on the football field tonight stag is also excited to once again host the marching band jamboree

and we are thrilled that our fellow schools in the district will also be in attendance it's on september 11th to save the day thank you all so much for your tish attention and support and i look forward to working with you this year thank you adriana okay who is that i think uh dr smith are you and oh of course of course of course as they're walking up i just want to note that the representative from andrew is a legacy you'll probably recognize the last name four years ago miss nala hamdin was uh presenting to you all year and now we have well i'll let miss good hoffman i'm excited to introduce aya hamdin president of student council here at andrew high school aya is very passionate about volunteering for special olympics and she's committed

to our restorative circles group she helps out regularly with that group i takes rigorous classes at andrew and is very involved with nhs and spanish honor society she's not only president of student council but she's also president of our sports medicine club she has not yet committed to her school post high school but she knows that she wants to pursue a career in sports medicine as dr nolting shared uh nala her sister legacy was uh five years ago also that stood before you um i am so excited to introduce aya to you she's not only an outstanding two bolt but an overall outstanding and amazing human so without further ado it is my pleasure to introduce aya hamden to you good evening ladies and gentlemen my name is ian hamden and i'm the student council

president at andrew high school for the 2021-2022 school year it feels great to finally be able to plan our normal activities and we've already dived right in beginning week one over the summer i along with mr dalton and miss othman have found uh ways to ease the transition for students to be back in the building full time we focus on students who are either fully remote last year and have not been in the building for over a year or those who are new to andrew and have never been in the building at all the theme the seniors the senior leaders selected for this year is bring back the thunder we have been apart for so long and missed out on so many favorite events so as we're bringing back our students and staff full-time we're

also bringing back the energy the spirit and everything that makes andrew andrew in order to begin this transition we invited students of the class of 2025 along with the remote sophomores in the class of 2024 and our incoming transfer students to our bold bath bolt bash was an opportunity for incoming students to meet fellow peers that they may not have known before and to learn more about the extracurriculars offered and become acclimated to our andrew community as a whole we successfully ran two days of this amazing event wrapping it up by teaching them our traditional chants cheers and our fight songs the first week of school ran very smoothly and it is apparent to all that we're already bringing back some of that thunder that we've been missing monday and tuesday we held our annual

welcome back assemblies where we introduced our theme to our students and did our traditional tears that same friday we had our senior leaders hold our senior sunrise where we had almost 200 seniors come out at 5 30 in the morning for some pancakes music and to watch the sunrise on our football field that night we had our popular black and gold showcase where our fall sports teams were spotlighted followed by a flag football game and a varsity football scrimmage the energy of our student section was incredible and a big welcome home to everyone in addition to sports many extracurricular clubs have gotten together to plan as usual and our fall sports have begun competing this week we wish them the best of their seasons thank you so much and i cannot wait for the rest

of this year okay so that would mean that isabella is next good evening everyone it is my distinct pleasure this evening to introduce sandberg super senior isabella torres uh to you this evening as our student council president um bella is a highly involved sandberg student new alpha theta nhs relay for life global connect our club green team and a gamut of probably some other activities that uh i'm actually forgetting uh she takes a highly rigorous course load with the gamut of ap courses um when i think about bellator as though i come back to we had some re-engagement events this summer we brought in students from the class of 2025 our incoming freshman and our incoming uh in some cases uh incoming sophomores from the class of 2024. bella was one of our student ambassadors

of that event and if you watched how bella went about that event she ensured that no student left that event without connecting with her but then also connecting with another peer at the event she forged connections between students at that event that i'm sure carried them into their first few days of school and uh will continue to carry them into their future sambar experiences uh so that's what bella does and something i've talked about with our staff and our students this year are our three weeds and i set this out from the start that i say our three wiis our tenants are we learn we grow and we inspire and i don't think i've come away from a bellator's interaction or watching bella torres as a student or in the hallways at sanberg high school

uh whether that's been talking to our friends whether that's been talking to students at a re-engagement event or whether that's been in a student council meeting asking uh the principals and principals questions about uh how we can do things better at stanford so bella embodies the that tenant of we inspire i'm inspired every day by watching bellator torres is a sandberg student i can't wait for you to learn a little bit more this year about what's going on at sammer from having hearing from bella and i hope that you're as inspired as i am from having the opportunity to hear bella's work so without further ado bellators [Applause] good evening and well-met my name is isabella torres hey it's me bellati your student council president of sandburg i'm honored to be here and especially to

represent a community so close to my heart august especially has been an exciting month of transition exploration and reconnection for sandburg's community and it seems the districts sandbridge transition began two weeks ago on august 4th and 6th sandberg hosted our re-engagement days for freshmen sophomore and transfer students alike groups led by staff and student leaders introduced the new students to sandberg they were given the opportunity to explore the building ask questions speak and party with other students a few a week later on august 13th the freshman first day started and thus the official beginning to our school year the guidance office has since continued to support all students through the adjustment class schedules are settling early college applications are beginning and students are always welcoming every day more transfer students begin their journeys at sandburg

and our counselors and tour guides have been wonderful at guiding each of and every one of them through our school throughout this month i've personally connected with so many students that i had in the entirety of the previous school year i'm watching them learn to love sandberg live and in person one of the new students like in sandburg to a college our culture is diverse inclusive proud and spirited of course the students are not the only ones transitioning tuesday night parents have the opportunity to walk our schedules and meet our teachers families are readjusting to consistent school schedules among the staff there are so many new faces and in new places um it has always been an honor to work with dr smith and even more so now as our principal like him so many

staff moved positions this past year it's exciting to see them grow alongside the students i believe every staff member continues to do their best to help and connect with the students i think it is safe to say that the transition to in-person school has been a welcome adjustment for everyone we have even had our first fire drills off as unpleasant as the alarm may be it is also very concrete reminder that we are finally back in the building and it certainly beats sitting at home waiting for teachers to return with enthusiasm i am also happy to announce that sandberg will have a homecoming following current guidelines we will of course be outside so long as weather so long as weather permits sandberg can expect a homecoming dance spirit week and assembly student council's planning is

underway and the student body is buzzing likewise other extra curriculars are returning in full force over the next few weeks clubs continue to host informational meetings and their first events of the year perhaps my favorite thus far has been the summer show too much light makes the baby go blind without without surprise the incredible cast crew and director put on a comical performance or rather performances the premise was 30 shows in 60 minutes a feet they pulled off every time and always got the audience off on the athletic side of activities our teams fans marching band cheerleaders and color guard are off to an amazing start last friday on august 20th sandberg hosted the blue and gold scrimmage game the cheer was on the excitement strong tomorrow night sandbrickfest begins to celebrate our first home

football game the game against prospect starts at 7 pm if anyone would like to go additionally both our golf teams have already begun winning boys golf won a quad against lincoln way west like white central and homewood flossmoor last week girls golf defeated bradley the rest of our fall sports begin competitions this week throughout it all sandberg superfans have been right there in the action they assist their freshman first day and continue to hype the entire school it goes without saying that we're all excited to be back and in person and in the wise words of dr smith we're learning we're growing and hopefully we're all inspiring it's looking like a great year to be an eagle thank you and sincerely isabella for us [Applause] well ladies thank you very much it's a pleasure meeting

you i look forward to hearing from you every month this year and hopefully uh we'll get to see your smiling faces soon okay the next item on the agenda is public comments and we have one mr brian roland sir if you'd like to come up to the podium okay thank you for coming tonight um you'll have five minutes and uh afterwards uh we will be no conversation it'll just be you know your comments and whatever you'd like to say so i'd like to get a little bit of clarification here just to make sure i'm up to date on what i've got uh in terms of information from you guys uh so i've seen so the contact tracing and if if a student is positive test positive there's two different guidelines if you're vaccinated versus understanding

if you're asymptomatic and you're vaccinated you don't have to miss a thing you continue through school normal day normal everything co-curricular activities if you're not vaccinated you're out for 14 days or you get spit in the cup every two to three days until the 14 days is up so i have that correct has that changed yeah so we we are um we are utilizing a binax test which is a nasal swab and that would allow a student to stay uh stay in school assuming that they test negative throughout the process and it's a 15 minute turn on the test if they is that for the unvaccinated kid or the vaccinated kid as well that is only for unvaccinated students so at that point then you're you're segregating the unvaccinated student for a virus that the

vaccinated student is still walking around and spreading which then creates a circumstance that my child becomes a close contact and then is again subjected to normal monitor is that a fair statement so my child has a close contact with a vaccinated student who's tested positive because now they're in the same class because the vaccinated student doesn't have to stay home at cert at this point we just like your comments well these are these are my comments i'm just making sure we're understanding each other clearly it's funny that that makes sense okay you can continue so okay so we're not gonna there's no there's no discussion um okay so we're going to segregate the unvaccinated children for a vaccine that is not fda approved for at least at this point half of the half of the

student body and overall that's kind of amazing that it's approved when it's still two years out from its long-term clinical trials so i'm not here to argue to debate vaccination statuses or what's legal or not but i just want to show the hypocrisy and the problem here of exposing non-vaccinated students to vaccinated kids that are apparently positive and walking around with the virus system so you really ought to rethink that whole process there because you're you're subjecting unvaccinated students to positive tested kits there should be a equal distribution there uh aside from that that's kind of my main thing so you guys have confirmed what i understood um i understand the mass mandates and you've had your discussions uh with parents uh on a side note i would like to urge the board uh there

are a lot of parents that would like to have the option for themselves of whether they put a bacteria mat on their kids face or not for five to six hours a day i walked through andrew for two and a half hours yesterday and by the end of the day i was struggling myself with i don't wear this um you're going to subject our kids to this without any consent of the parents um we know this virus to be 99.9 safe for our kids they're not going to die from this that's not a that's not a that's not a statistic that you can really refute um [Music] outside of all of that what i want to urge this board to do is talk to other boards there are a lot of other schools around here

that want to do optional masking but we've got the dictator in springfield who's swinging his hammer taking away funding from schools if enough schools stand up for it and join together there's going to be there's going to be limits as to what he can do he can't discredit half of his state illinois is largely a pro-choice state parents want the choice to do what they what they want with their kids so i'm urging the board to talk to other districts district 230 shares the share schools with payless tinley and orlando within that there's elementary schools and middle schools where they're getting the same feedback from parents that they want optional mastery talk to the boards be the leaders that you put in your mission statement join join forces with the other schools that want to

allow this that's really about all i can do is urge you to talk to other boards and see what can be done in order to give parents back their choice so that's really all i have to say thank you so no discussion we will take your comments into consideration and and i i will just address quickly uh your point about joining with other schools um the one thing that you need to understand is that your issue is not with us with other school boards your issue is is with the governor uh our hands are tied and and our hands are tied because if we don't follow what the governor says regardless of what you think we may be able to do we won't be able to do it because he can do what he wants

and the amount of time we would spend fighting the governor if the mass mandate if we didn't follow his mandate the children in that time frame would lose their ability to participate in extracurriculars would lose their ability to play sports and potentially we would lose funding none of us here feel that that's worth it sir we're done okay sir sir that's it your time is up thank you sir please sit down or i'll have to ask you to leave be the leader sir thank you we're doing what's best for your children whether you believe it or not okay at this point um we would now go to the curriculum spotlight john i believe that's you is that correct oh katie hello good evening it's great to see everybody thanks for having us um as you

know district 230 has eight technology innovative innovation facilitators they are affectionately known as our tips and they are led by chief technology officer john connolly a portion of their day is spent dedicated to the classroom but the other part of their day is spent working with both staff and students on leveraging appropriate technology for benefits both in and out of the classroom tonight three of our tips are here to highlight the authentic experiences that technology has offered in our current and recent past and how the growth of instructional technology will continue so please welcome mrs soucallo mrs borst and mr rodinez okay well we're going to start off by introducing ourselves so we're going to skip that part thank you dr mcmillan um i'd like to point out that um dr nolting has a history

of timing my speeches um because he usually has a hook and yes he's starting the timer right now um we're told we have seven minutes but we haven't started yet so okay we're ready to go right now um so first thing you want to do is just kind of talk a little bit about um how proud we are of our teachers and how they really kind of stepped up um during this pandemic and all the wonderful things that we've seen i'm going to start with um a world language teacher her name is gabby whitie um she's spent the last two years really working her butt off to just make such authentic learning in her classroom learning flipgrid learning paradigm learning all these great things for a classroom and i think our kids have really benefited

from this but i'm just so proud of what she's done and we feel like there needs to be a personal touch to what we've done this past year and a half hello um i'd like to talk about one of our world language teachers as well um suzanne reedy um she's a phenomenal spanish teacher and she has taken the technology and she's made it her own and the things that she's done with it are amazing she shows us things that she finds in the programs and she's really wanting to share and she gets legitimately excited about the authentic learning experiences that she's able to provide for her students i'm going to talk about a friend of mine lisa evans and um she is she is what we would call a traditional teacher and she she knows

that right and she she embraces that um she's a math teacher so she's very linear isn't it yeah okay i need two of those things right okay no that's it that's all i get okay but anyway um pre pandemic she she really enjoyed as our most of our math teachers do they like writing on the board they like showing examples on the board um you know the and and so but she really had to transform her teaching and she embraced it wholeheartedly she was super excited we're talking today she's telling me how you know she was making her own videos using screencastify she was uploading them into ed puzzle pre-pandemic she didn't even know what those words meant you know so she's doing all this and she's super excited that this year for as hard

as she worked last year these are awesome resources that she created that her kids are going to benefit from this year so really focusing on like the great things that came out of this pandemic that we've lived through or are still in i guess um but anyway um so pre pandemic just a couple of things that you know we kind of struggle with all educators kind of struggle with and who doesn't love a good sponge about me so on the left right engagement engagement has always been a struggle in the classroom right you have 30 students in front of you how are you actively engaging all of them all of the time right so that was one thing that we kind of struggle with on the right one our favorite things absenteeism right because the

kid comes in the next day and they're always like did i miss anything i said no we canceled class and waited for you to come back for today um but that student would be at home and they would really be missing out on what was happening in the classroom and it was a struggle um it was a struggle so the pandemic kind of helped us up some of those problems though pre-pre-endemic we had tons of teachers that would come but not not the size of what we see in the last year and a half and we would have small meetings um and we'd have small groups and it would be kind of the same groups that would come month after month um but the amount and the number of people and people we haven't seen

before during pandemic and after pandemic has been amazing and the way that they're reaching out and trying to learn more has just been amazing after the pandemic so we're just going to pretend that that's where we're living right now um but during the pandemic and i know that we talk about learning loss and things like that but the level of engagement that our teachers here at district 230 were able to get the increasing engagement was absolutely amazing um and and we're not gonna go through all of these but um as a teacher i like to say thank the board for their support because these applications were what were able to make help our district 230 teachers be so successful so you know them incorporating learning management systems like canvas and google classroom purchasing paradox for

us to use to make sure that we have 100 engagement with our students screencastify so teachers could be making their own videos at home posting them an ed puzzle with questions so that they know their students are actually going through um step by step and answering questions that go with it actively learn which is increasing our reading comprehension so all of these applications is what enabled our teachers to have so much success we have some fun data to share with you because it can be fun data can be fun yeah the the data is good so um one of the one of the cool things is that um from 2015 to uh the fall of 2020 just like the number of assignments were published in canvas we went from five thousand seven hundred and fifty

five to forty six thousand and that's not like that's like a flash in the pantheon that's a demonstration of this becoming part of our culture and the teachers grabbing on to it and the best thing about this year so far is we can see if the teachers recognize the value of it they're running with it and it has become part of the regular classroom routine which increases transparency and again additional opportunities for authentic learning for the students um also between 2015 and 2020 you saw the number of courses more than double from 331 published courses to 700 and again we're seeing that continue that that momentum is continuing now because people are grabbing the best things that we took during that difficult time and we're still using them and leveraging them leveraging them to increase

uh student learning class discussions they increased five times the 5506 separate classroom discussions which gives even the quiet students the opportunity where they have to participate so you can hear every single voice and then again continuing at this trend of flexibility and uh rapid growth in google classroom we experience a 28.7 increase in teacher usage and again very similar the same thing it's become foundational it's not it's one of these things that's just what we do and once that continues it just makes the learning more authentic and more constant for students um the other thing that really changing christine kennedy touched on this a little bit is um you know last year what our professional development looked like so before last year it was very tip driven right it was very much kind of a

lecture style and really not quite not really like how most of us actually teach what was so cool last year is we had other teachers stepping up taking leadership roles and running these professional developments they were becoming so comfortable with the technology and i don't think i would have said this before pandemic that they were comfortable enough that they would step up during our profession professional development and they would lead it and that was something really really cool to see now i put after because we put that in quotes the pandemic after dependent on it but where we're seeing these trends what we're hoping that is going to kind of continue here um and this is kind of goes along with our spongebob meme at the beginning these are agendas that teachers have created pre-pandemic

writing everything on the board during the pandemic putting together these awesome resources for kids so they are not skipping a beat when kids are absent they're not missing out what was written on the board they have hyperlinks they have videos they have ed puzzles um everything is really accessible to them 24 7 on their phones where they get most of their information i mean teachers found such value in this in the work that they put in last year that the teachers that last year was their first year doing it they're continuing to do it this year because they see how good it is for our kids if you were to ask my students they would think i'm sponsored by paradigm because i talk about paradigm all the time so this we do get some i

get some free slags so i do like the swag but one of the things about pear deck if you don't know what peridek is when you when we were in school you'd ask a question you'd be like please don't ask me please don't ask me because one person got asked where paradox it's every kid has to respond on their computers so you're getting a response from every student in class every single time so they have to stay engaged because then if they're not answering i could be like well why didn't you answer bob why didn't you answer the question um so you can you can then work with them and then it drives such discussion but you can see how far we've come in 2021 um 2020 2021 that the amount of engagement that has

happened and the number of times that we're asking students to respond to us that has been immense and the number of teachers using it are like oh my gosh we would have told them before but part of pandemic had made them use this and it's been amazing in our classrooms pre-pandemic as far as growth and understanding tools and just overall use i think we're all seeing the same thing in our buildings is that you know we had multiple users working within these systems and sharing them and trading information um but then during when things started to happen even our most reluctant users were pulled forward there was no choice we had to adapt and the best thing about that because you know through every trial you do take some good things from that trial is

that now as we're moving beyond these systems have again become completely normalized and just a standard part of our school culture uh everybody now pretty much has some presence in classroom or canvas and they're using these things and that provides again additional continuity for the students additional opportunities for learning and definitely we're able to make sure that all the students are participating at this point that's great um some of the things that the authentic learning that our students have been able to use in the last two years have been amazing um from the call that i had with john and the people who did our solar panels and my students were able to see you know and talk to them and ask them questions was unbelievable um to pulling and my kids don't want to

hear twitter ever again because i i go on twitter to find physics videos and that's one of my favorite videos of a helicopter going up and the blades aren't it looks like the blades aren't turning because the frame rate is the same as the helicopter blades so the helicopter blades look like they're not turning and then it spurs discussion so that's all stuff you can bring into the classroom that's real the life i have parents out that have contacted me and they're like i'm a crane operator i can bring in video like it's all those things that have just spurred us and i don't think that we would have been there if it weren't for not that i'm saying i wanted it but it has pushed us forward to make so much more learning opportunities

for our students and the students have stepped up and the teachers have stepped up so we're proud so i think we're at six minutes and 30 seconds we're right there okay we're right on track okay so perfect so we're just going to kind of wrap it up we just wanted to you know um on behalf of us and the staff that we're here representing think the board for their support um all of those applications that were purchased to help us do our job especially during a pandemic were essential and the staffer could not have been as successful as they were without that support so we appreciate that and we also want to say thank you for the time because as you know um time the time that was given to us in the morning to

be able to create these lessons teachers could not have transformed their curriculum like they did without being a lot of that time in the morning so thank you on behalf of i'm just going to speak for everybody what the heck on behalf of everyone we want to say thank you for that support and for the time that you gave us in the morning to make these things successful so thank you no no no but if i could say it was a great job three things just uh about the tips and the presentation one i took the spongebob meme personally just for the rest um you know i i think the the three people that you are talking to today i've had actually personal experience working with all three of the incredible uh educators they're they're

they're teachers before their tech folks and that's a very important thing and i think that's an important quality is uh people are are connected to how they teach and how they how they bring energy to the classroom and all the technology is kind of part of that and the third thing is that and i don't want to speak to you but i know it's a goal you know when when tif started i think you guys were speaking to the to the crowd if you will you were finding the teachers that were attracted to technology that were working with you predominantly and over time and then i think the pandemic accelerated that but over time you really started teaching people or working with people who wanted to learn and develop and grow and i know the

next challenge for you as we do move beyond this pandemic is to keep those people engaged and keep them moving forward because the power of what they were able to discover is is there so my compliments to the three and your counterparts who aren't here today because i know you're representing them too does any does anybody have any questions that's great stuff like that oh for tony so fast for tony only i guess no they're back that's true okay no question once again thank you very much thanks for everything you guys do we appreciate it all right then the next item on the agenda is the tentative budget always an exciting topic so do you want to stay there do you want whatever you prefer john it's up to you uh it's more of a

summary page if you look at uh stage two of the budget back this is gonna be this entire [Music] currently it does reflect [Music] almost a 3.6 million dollar deficit which impact is going to be able to you know negate and have a balanced budget between adjustments to revenues and expenditures there were some numbers um that were still coming in as we mentioned there's uh we're starting to see how much energy the solar panels created energy bills [Music] um [Music] numbers [Music] this year last year this in the last couple of years [Music] i just wanted to add something i didn't put into my report was that we will be reporting our student activity and athletic accounts as well going forward um that is something that the state has mandated so when you see that

on this on the reports um that is uh new legislation that we're complying to and that's why it looks a little different good jobs okay thank you john uh we look forward to seeing that deficit uh disappear okay next is the uh the vehicle surplus and john i think that's you sure we normally do this once a year um [Music] okay can i have a motion please go to school board declare the list of vehicles presented as surplus and authorized administration to sell the vehicles okay motion made by member o'sullivan seconded by member hardik for the surplus vehicles any comments or questions for john john i hope it's the blue van on the side of stag that sits there year after year i've never actually seen it move i've asked eric olson about it several

times maybe you should please have it out of here you could put in a bid [Laughter] all right any other questions okay let's vote lisa o'sullivan yes member murphy peterson yes remember o'connor yes yes remember dalton yes remember gracias yes member serratore yes the motion passes uh are you going to do the pooling gym or is dave okay dave good evening everybody um to answer your question no that was not one of the vehicles it's not we've got something worse we had a different parking spot just for just a different view oh wait everybody background is on on thursday july 15th at 1 pm we receive bids for the 2022 hvac pool and gym upgrades this work includes the installation of new pool dehumidification units new heating and cooling units for the gyms that do

not currently have any and duct work where needed we had 14 contractors pick up bid documents we received seven bids bids from this work range from four million fifty thousand to four million five hundred forty nine thousand five hundred dollars the work will mostly likely be done during the summer but we will try to get some of the gems done during the year if possible the lowest bid for this work was see acetely heating and piping bid four million fifty thousand dollars we estimated the work would cost 3.5 million to talk with contractors and architects about whether or not they breathed pricing would go down we did it out later all estimations were that it would not with the demand load like some said and with the estimation of how increase of materials architects have

reviewed the bids and contact the references and are recommending their bid for approval our engineering team has worked with the team this team in the past and they're happy with their work i recommend the school board award the 2022 hvac upgrade project to see acetale heating and piping for four million fifty thousand i've attached the bid results for your review i i have a question oh wait let's do the motion first i'm with the school board we're the 2022 hvac mechanical upgrade project to see acetely heating and piping contractors of bill park illinois in the amount of four million fifty thousand dollars a second motion made by member o'sullivan second event member hardik to accept the bid for the hvac pool and gym work okay now questions like uh quick question so here at the

stag building we have a gym called the rug room correct the rug's gone now but it still doesn't have good ventilation it doesn't have air conditioning it doesn't even have a fan so does any of this yes will that help this is part of this zone correct this is part of those gyms i'll have air conditioning now in that section of the school as well as the pool here as well thank you any other questions for dave all right let's vote for o'sullivan yes member murphy peterson yes yes member of harvard yes remember dalton yes member gracias yes members yes the motion passes okay the next item is the demographic study john i think that's you yeah um [Music] would like [Music] the so there's several components that go into this they have a template

phrases um okay can we get a motion please i move that the school board authorized the district administration to order the generation tables from rsp at a cost of ten thousand dollars with five thousand dollars being paid by district 230 with the understanding that the remainder is to be paid by district 135 second a motion made by member dalton seconded by a member of gracias to authorize uh the demographic study any comments or questions quick quick question john approximately how much do we generate on an annual basis from these builders site of the fees is considering i'm i would guess i would guess okay so over here over here and what we're doing here is we're paying to change the charts is there any idea that they in doing this they may look to change

the ordinance audience like they actually change what they're doing here is are we leading to them actually trying to change their contribution levels uh yeah the summer market that they change it's totally fairly complex but basically by having an increased career market value of land and accurate generation okay those two two things we're going to get what we're supposed to get and it'll be dependent yeah and does 135 agree to pay their 5 000 of this um yeah i'm not sure um thanks okay any other questions okay let's vote yes member murphy peterson yes remember o'connor yes yes remember dalton yes member gracias yes members yes the motion passes okay dave do we have any other updates on our construction projects yes i do have updates i don't do you smell that too yeah yeah

that's part of our construction going on here um currently all of our back order materials aside from a few odds and ends are in so we're going to be working second shift starting next week to finish up door projects at stag and andrew the baseball field is really close they've got the last couple loads of the red rock coming in they're finishing upgrading around the outside and when that's all finished then they can come in and do the final approval and give us the permits and be done with that field and looking really forward to that um i would say the roofing at all three schools aside from the metal flashing work all the tear off is done now at stag so they have uh top coating to do and then there's a final uh

liquid aluminizer you call it that goes over the top to keep all the the roof from spreading around um little granules that go on top of it uh as far as the alterations go yeah aside from the doors there's a door here at stag a few door parts need to be done that'll be done next week on nights the tennis courts with finally got all the parts and pieces in for that all the liquid they need to finish then we get stuck with all the rain so hoping to have stag complete next week and sandberg shortly after that probably the week after let's see anything else here the solar power yes they did have that part come in they put it in yesterday and now currently all three schools have their solar power running um

hoping to get the uh portal up shortly so we can see and we'll get some sort of presentation so we can see how actually how it's generating it's can't wait to get that finalized so that's another project i'm pretty excited about um i'm waiting on simplex to finish scheduling to finish the elevator at andrew and once we get all that scheduled that should be no problem it just needs to be tested with the inspector there so once that's done all those projects will be complete the window project is complete now that the hvac upgrades have been approved i'm going to push off to find out how quickly we can get these units and see how what the timeline is going to be for installation it may prove to be all next summer or if we

can get some in earlier we will try and i think that's it does anybody have any questions on any projects we have going at the schools everybody good okay dave thank you very much thank you good job all right then it gets us back to dr nolte so uh policies yes so as you can see on page 84 there are several policies that are uh presented to you for first reading all of those policies were based on press review and language legal updates so since this is a first reading all we are going to need is a voice vote so all in favor i move the school board approve the first reading and public display the board policy six two 6145-6160-6235-6255 zero two one zero two one three zero two two four zero two two

six zero two three zero five one zero five two zero and eight nine zero thank you sir very clerky we need a second second motion made by member o'sullivan seconded by member dalton now all we need is a voice vote so all in favor opposed okay motion passes all right sir all right goals yes sir so in uh at your station extra areas you should have a a very colorful breakdown of our goals for this year as as i think you'll hopefully note that most of what we've been presenting at committees in previous board meetings regarding our reopening plan as a significant portion of our goals so i'll just quickly highlight those as as you know those three areas we've we've talked about quite a bit but within obviously maintaining our school programming at 100

is one of our reopening goals we're monitoring that obviously by looking at our uh at our calendar and our ability to deliver a traditional uh academic program throughout the year uh after school in athletic programs as well uh you heard from our tips that's one of our areas that we'll be continuing to monitor is how we're supporting our staff particularly with instructional support and technology support as we continue to integrate some of the positive lessons learned from last year's format we'll also be monitoring academically how students are doing academically within their grades and grade distribution um and within our graduation rate and freshman on track data the the theme of those two data points is essentially we want to get back to what we were where we were at prior to the pandemic if not

better so those goals were established based on those um based on those standards from 2008-2020 uh the second goal within the reopening plan is obviously looking at students uh physical and emotional health as well as our staff um so we're gonna be monitoring attendance and and the mitigations that we talked about at the beginning of this meeting are helping us maintain um student and staff attendance at a rate of 90 or higher again that was what we were at with uh in that 2019 that pre-pandemic year uh we are also looking at this goal to to engage students in our co-curricular program as you heard from our three student speakers we're off to a great start we want to continue that to maintain opportunities for kids to participate in things connections social health and wellness

are big parts of the co-curricular program we're also looking to to monitor our student and staff emotional health and then make adjustments throughout the year as well as uh providing them done being our staff with professional development to help them manage trauma-informed instructional practices in the classroom and supporting students who who may have need and then our final goal really falls into involvement at the state and local level to re-engage our local um officials and all the way down to springfield ideally on on reengaging local control um so that includes working within our state associations our local superintendent group um and obviously within the construct of the board and some of the interactions you have to the statement made earlier in public comment obviously we have been and we will continue to be highly engaged

with our communities with our state level organizations and with the individuals we work with in springfield and and continue to exercise our voices uh i'll pause for a moment at the first goal but those are our three main points and obviously a big portion of this year is reopening so that's why it's significant part of this plan all right a second part that you'll very well recognize because you've been actively engaged in this is is this is the year that we were building our strategic framework uh clearly uh our our work that we've done thus far is to build a mission and vision and strategic pillars which you have all been uh participating in and shared our progress our first and second and third goals are really almost a timeline um in terms of how

we're going to engage a collaborative process of students and staff uh board members and and community members and building um what would be essentially uh our action plan moving into uh the second half of this year and then our 2020 to 23 school year and it's a work in progress to to to establish benchmarks for uh identifying goals and metrics uh developing capacity and and organizing resources um with with the idea that when we get into the later part of the school year where we're able to kind of design and implement uh moving forward so a lot of these goals are what we're going to read more as benchmarks uh and in fact on september i plan to share with you kind of a an outline or a timeline if you will um to kind

of correlate to the to the at least the first portion here of how we're gonna frame this out and then our last goal is really about um community engagement and rebuilding one of the areas in which uh i think identified through our uh through my listening tour if you will prior to um starting on july 1st um this was one area that came through and i think there's two parts to this that that really resonated first uh anytime you experience something like a like a pandemic and a disruption that we saw you're going to have a cultural rebuild that you have to engage in so that's just a part of the dynamic of having the experiences that we had so the second piece is our community uh is looking for us to look at our

communication protocols our how we communicate what we're communicating um and how we're engaging folks in the process so the first goal is really about um the communication platform and taking a look at that if um if you're not following me on twitter you should start following me because one of the the first pieces of that actually came out two days ago when we are featuring impactful students and humberto from sag was our first student and he did an excellent job and we're pushing those out on a weekly basis from a district level in a manner that we think people could digest it social media platforms um you know websites uh you know one to two minute snippets uh that's kind of what we're hearing from our community and then the other three goals are really

connected to our five essentials uh we did it um over the summer uh we did break down the five essentials data there's three areas that we think we could improve on that i think fall under the the guise of rebuilding culture and communication so we're looking for gains within the areas of effective leadership collaborative teachers and effective instruction the other two areas on the five essentials were rated as the highest possible rating in this from the state of illinois these three weren't bad but they fell a little bit short of the highest grading so those are areas we'd like to focus upon so this is the plan as presented tonight and certainly welcoming your feedback or suggestions or any modifications you'd like to see okay well this time let's we have a motion and then

we can get a discussion i move that the school board approved the district 230s fy 2020 school improvement plan as presented second okay motion made by member gracias seconded by member murphy peterson to approve the goals for fiscal year or school year 2021 2022 okay any comments or questions yeah bobby did a really nice job i mean you took that framework and you filtered it down and filtered it down and i really like the mission statement a lot i'll read it real quickly d230 is an interconnected learning community that inspires innovation at the feet and leadership and here you describe what should go into mission state but i think you really filtered it down and got the essentials without being too too long-winded so uh it's a great start and we've got more work to

do obviously on this but the second thing that you'd mentioned about kind of recreating a culture we heard it both times uh twice from our student speakers uh i think recharge and it was mistake and then bring back the thunder or something like that it was andrew so it's kind of neat how you mentioned that and they've mentioned that so obviously something needs to be done but good news is we can start the clean slate and go from there yeah right now these are good thanks thank you anybody else i think these uh i agree with pat i mean this is you know when when we started with with just a blank sheet of paper in uh june and now here we are and uh it's it's amazing how we got to this point but

i think it was a great process and uh i think we have a great result so um good good good work by all so thank you sir thank okay let's vote sullivan yes remember murphy peterson yes member o'connor yes yes yes member gracias yes member tori yes so we have our goals for this year all right sir anything else that you have no sir all right then at this point i would like to entertain a motion to enter executive session to consider information regarding the appointment employment compensation discipline performance or dismissal of a specific employee or legal counsel for the public body to discuss student disciplinary cases to discuss matters relating to placement of individual students in special education programs and to consider other matters relating to individual students to discuss collective negotiating matters or

deliberations concerning salary schedules for one or more classes of employees and to discuss pending or probable litigation against affecting or on behalf of the public's body motion made by member hardik seconded by member gracias to enter into executive session let's go remember sullivan yes murphy peterson yes remember o'connor yes yes remember dalton yes member brassius yes yes we will be entering an executive session at 8 37 p.m shall return thank you to okay all right we are back at 10 20 p.m and uh at this time i'd like a motion on personnel action i moved that the school board approved personnel action including staff co-curriculars licensed staff employments and leaves of absences professional support employment leave of absence and resignations support staff employments leaves of absences and resignations a second motion made by member murphy

peterson seconded by member hardik to accept personnel action let's vote member of sullivan yes member murphy peterson yes member o'connor yes member heartick yes member dalton yes member gracias yes member serratore yes motion passes okay uh so all we have left is board comments so uh mike i have none none okay pat i already mentioned about the uh mission statement that was great and then um just the observation uh tuesday night at san bernardin's open house was attendance was extremely low it was probably twenty percent thirty percent normally was i don't know what's called it i don't know if it's i think it's a i think it's a fluke i think it's important but i've been going for eight years and it's always part of it might be that they weren't giving cookies lemonade out

lunch and gym there's no you know pfsa or you know boosters selling anything um i thought it was really interesting it was uh i think most of my classes i went to four parents and each one um i'm not concerned about just kind of a comment so and then um getting back to the class of 2022 i asked katie um for wednesday's meeting talk a little more about the um class of 2022 and their college preparedness and post-graduate preparedness because a vast majority of these kids you know i talked to my kid where do you want to go what do you want to do i don't know i don't know i thought it was my kid and then i started asking other kids and realize it's not my kid i'm talking to kids in lincoln

east i'm talking kids why every time i hear a kid in 2022 i ask that question and a vast majority have no idea where they want to go to college i have no idea what they want to do when they grow up and i blame it on not being in the building and clever it's not our fault but it's something we have to work on right especially in that intervention advisory um period two c yeah that's right because um i think your junior year you weren't in school collaborating like hey i'm looking at this point walmart university in san diego oh i've never heard of that what's that like oh my gosh that sounds great or i want to go in the underwater basket with you oh i didn't know it was a thing you

know they're not they weren't collaborating and getting ideas from each other so a lot of them are really lost so i don't know what our curriculum is for the seniors for advisory but we really got to press home that college you know readiness you know you used to at your lunch period go in the gym and see all the different schools there that was gone right now we did a career day online i thought it was great but it's just not the same and again i'm not blaming anybody because we did the best we could what we had but i think that really has to be a pretty big focus um and we're going to talk about education next week um man like one more thing i'll save it for education next week as well

so that's that's it hey thanks kate um so glad everybody's back um you know again we're we're doing the best we can given the rules we have to comply with and but it certainly sounds to me like staff students teachers everybody is super excited and i think that's the most important thing dave i don't want to elongate an already lengthy meeting but i do think it's probably worth mentioning that since our last meeting a lot has changed [Music] if you recall we had a number of parents and and public speakers who stepped up and suggested that our best course of action was to ignore our legal counsel's advice ignore the insurance representative's advice [Music] show courage and do the opposite of what everybody is telling us to do and we got a little taste of

that tonight as well i think it's worth mentioning that in your introductory remarks tony you had kind of laid out a lot of our concerns and those concerns included the fact that if we did not follow council and we did not follow the insurance recommendation we would lose our protections we would lose potential toward immunity that we currently have we would subject ourselves to personal liability our students wouldn't be able to participate in extracurricular activities they wouldn't be able to participate in ihsa sports they we could potentially lose funding that includes 16 million dollars in esser funds and guess what every single one of those things that we were concerned about even though we didn't know it at the time came true within a week so for any parents who might have uh might be

insomniacs and actually still up watching this um let me just suggest to you that we really are doing the best that we possibly can and we are truly looking out and acting as fiduciaries for your taxpayer dollars we're doing our best to protect that money and we're doing our best to try to keep over 3 000 kids safe in our buildings including teachers and administrators so we're doing our best to try to figure this out there is no road map but we are not going to act recklessly collectively i think i can speak on behalf of everyone we're not going to act recklessly we're not going to uh start making decisions that are completely contrary to what's in the best interests of our families so i think it's just worth mentioning uh in light of

the fact of how much things have changed since the last meeting i agree with kate and pat from all sounds of it the the teachers the students everybody is rolling they are they enjoy being back it's some step towards um what they once remembered and i can only hope that that continues thank you thank dave sue i'm just gonna say that i agree with what kate had to say and what dave had to say and just uh thank dr nolting for the work that he's putting in outside of dealing with the reopening act or reopening it the reopening plan with our vision mission and pillars that's a lot of work i think that's going in the great great direction um and i thank you for all the hard work you put in from before day

one melissa um patrick said a lot of the same that i was going to say but i did get to go to my very final back-to-school night and it although it was a very low turnout it was thunderstorming and crazy out there so that may have impacted it um i will say that the energy in this building even with a third of the people was invigorating i had it i i had the best most fun evening on a tuesday night right here at stag high school that i've had in a long time it was the first time i was in this building in a year and a half the staff was excited the administrators were excited the kids that were helping direct us i literally had students personally escort me because there wasn't that many

parents sometimes i was one or two of us in class listening to the teacher but they were grateful that even two of us were in there now i do have a senior so it could have been because i was senior parent and most senior parents don't go to back to school night and it was my last one i wanted to be here but i will say that everyone is thrilled even wearing masks to be back in the building and having as normal of an experience as i can for the start of school so i commend everybody recommend the staff the teachers what bus drivers we have everybody like it you know it's been challenging every way we turn and like dave said we really have been stewards for the community and for our students and

i really am proud of us because it's hard when 30 people come and try to get us to do the contrary and we stuck to our guns and we were correct and hopefully we will continue to be correct and i just know that our group will work it's it's hardest to make the right in in just decisions so thank you all for all your hard work every one of you uh it was great to see the uh the three student leaders here tonight uh you know that's a true sign that the year has begun and it was so nice to hear them talk about activities that are going on in school and that they're in school and you could you could tell from their voices their reaction their attitudes that there was excitement uh there's

excitement in the schools and uh you know as as i think you said on institute day you said you never thought you'd hear a 15 year old say god i can't wait to go to school and yet you know here we are and uh they're all happy to be in school and so that makes me feel good um that they're happy and uh you know and just you know one final note on on this whole mask issue or whatever you know that the students tonight talked about some of the sports that the kids have already played some of the games they played already and the fact that they're going to be playing their first football games this weekend if we were fighting the governor right now if we weren't requiring the mass those kids would

not have played those games and there'd be no football this weekend and i don't want to be the person that would have to go to those athletes and say sorry guys you're not getting a play this week um so i'm happy where we are and i think you know everybody uh has done a great job so so thank you all sir you have the final word no i thank you for those comments and and uh i i do think that as uh as was stated earlier you know our many times the the best way to lead is is to not uh is to not pound your chest and show people how tough you are but show people how smart you are and be diligent and good stewards of the community and and as you said

um you know i plan to go to samberg tomorrow night much it's probably going to be about 90 90 student athletes compete a marching band perform a bunch of dancers and cheerleaders be there and probably um maybe a couple thousand fans in the in the stands and and that's not something we envisioned a year ago um and and to do that is it takes discipline to do that takes takes forward thinking to do that takes collaborating with other board members and other superintendents and those are things we're doing and you should be proud of yourselves as a board for um for for i hate to to use a term like this but keeping your powder dry and making the right decisions for the kids that you're um in in charge of their their their education

and their their um their experience and um we'll continue to to move forward and i'm hopeful that next month we're meeting in a building we're meeting with students presenting to us maybe um getting some highlights on how homecoming went so thank you all for your support and and we'll keep moving forward all right and so at this time i would like a motion to adjourn from a second well she made my member heartache second amendment gracias to adjourn it didn't take long please so let's vote remember remember murphy peterson yes member o'connor yes member heartache yes remember dalton yes remember gracias yes member sir tori yes we are adjourned at
