004that was the the cherry on the Sunday it was really it was really fun um so I actually went home and and got my drum to play at the drum circle so that was fun cool any other board updates all of the performances from the students were great okay no further board updates we will move to administrative updates all right under good news we had uh a special young man we wanted to recognize tonight we're going to kind of hold off on that we're hoping that he's going to come a little bit later um so we'll move on for that and I appreciate you mentioning about the juneth we were really excited about the juneth this last weekend uh we just met today uh we're going to start planning for the next one in uh

005SE August September uh to get that up and running so uh we're really excited about that and our I think our students really showcased weal um we had a lot of talent in the district um and so we were really pleased with them so our other good news just arrived and that's G uh Gabriel Gabriel Chapman and I'm gonna have Mr keki give a little bit of information on him this is a young man that exemplifies giving student voice and advocacy for things that he he believed in and um so I'm going to have uh Mr Ki share a little bit more about that how are you good to see you thanks so much for coming in appreciate it um so I want to take a moment here to speak about uh Mr Chapman's component

006and work with getting our boys volleyball team started here at the high school uh Dr koganes members of the Board of Education it brings me great pleasure to introduce you to an outstanding student athlete who recently graduated from high school uh Gabriel Chapman wanted to play volleyball at Creon High School school we did not have a program in place in his freshman in sophomore year he came to the athletic director's office uh inquired about it was given several steps that had to take place in order for the program to be put in place uh he did all those things including but not limited to outreach for our students and also finding a uh coach who would participate in Miss Barb belan uh as our boys volleyball coach through his work over the first two years

007at high school we added a boys volleyball team in the spring of 2023 um I'm proud to announce that through these original conversations and student Outreach that Mr Chapman uh had with our office uh that we now presently have two levels of boys volleyball here at the high school uh both a JV and a varsity team I think it's also important to note that in addition to his work with starting our boys volleyball team uh Mr Chapman was named to the uh inaugural uh Southland Athletic Conference All Conference team as well as named the player of the year in the Southland Athletic Conference for boys volleyball and if that's Lastly lastly that's not impressive enough and I think this is obviously all those things are fantastic all the work that he's done is fantastic all

008the Outreach but Mr Chapman is an ignition mentor and he fully embodies what it means to be a student athlete uh in addition to his outstanding work on the athletic pitch he is graduating from our High School Magna kumlati and he will continue his studies at Rosevelt University uh please join me in congratulating Mr Chapman on his accomplishments at creep Mooney High School Additionally you haven't seen this yet uh and actually no nor of the Board of Education this has been sitting in my office uh so we took the last two years we've added two separate programs uh you know we took an orts team which we added uh at the same time that we added boys volleyball so this will now be this will be displayed uh in the athletic hallway and this is

009a picture of the very first win of the team you see that right there and then as well as number one Jersey and this will be PID shadow box and be placed up in the uh athletic hallway for all people to see as they come through and obviously this none of these things could happen without your original inquiries and you're pushing and a prodding and we appreciate you working towards getting an i HSA San sport added to the high school so thank you very much nice [Applause] job thank you yeah thank you outstanding work yes admire your initiative thank you for doing that that's awesome good job best wishes at Roosevelt too yeah so will you be able to play volleyball there what will you be able to play volleyball there yes awes awesome excellent

010great all right we're going to move on uh to the next item um we have just completed the strategic planning process this is something we've been working on all year we had several um board members that were on the committee as well in our audience we have Mrs Janine galberth and Jay farar they were on the committee as well from and Christine quinland yes as well she she participated as well and this has been a uh a process that was very enlightening it was very uh energizing to really get together with everybody to talk about where our district is going to need to go into the future so tonight with me we have uh Dr mu okay okay U we'll go to the next one and and then if it's all right with the board

011I might text her to find out where she's at okay then we're going to move on to our agenda is teaching and learning and I've got Miss Perkins is here apparently so miss Perkins I want to see you in two places at once she could though she could I'm sure she can but not it's notary we're moving you up a little bit in the agenda Dr Mueller is not on yet so I'm GNA text her to see where she's at I I can I can run in these yes yes uh congratulations again to uh G uh Gabrielle Chapman um one of my uh previous student so that was uh where I was giving um back some love there all right good evening uh to the board and to Dr carlines to our um uh staff

012and um families and that are here this evening um and to our families and staff that are watching um at home this is our academic cohort data uh report that we promised that we would give to the board in June it follows the work of our students assessment from the map assessment um if you remember back in April Mr albre asked if we could isolate our students um from the students who transition in and out of our our schools um because we have a high Mobility rate and if we can look at that data over time and so this is what that report um does give us and so as you look at the report and the report is published um on the website uh it is um a few glossery terms here are our

013cohort growth um and these are our students who were with us for three years and took all segments of this map assessment so that means they have nine pieces of data with us then we have our non-cohort growth which are the students who were with us over that three-year period but they may not have assess with us um at each of those intervals and that could be that they moved in or out um it could be that they were new to the district but that is what constitutes our non-cohort growth and then we have our map RIT score and this is the national Norm that is set um by NWA and it shows how much students have grown um at each segment of this assessment we give this assessment three times a year and the

014teachers use this this data um to help inform their instruction and it individualizes um for the students as you look at the chart it will show you um where students are performing at low low average average high average to high and then it gives you the percentile of where they are and that is a comparison number our students can receive a score a rid score were between 100 and 350 so we looked at the average of how these students grew over these cohorts so on the first slide with the data it shows if you look on the leftand side these are our students who are currently our second graders and so it shows where they were from 21 to 22 from 22 to 23 23 to 2 four the First Column shows their math growth

015and then the second column shows their Ela growth and so if you look what you can see is that every year that those cohort students that were with us again 191 190 students they um grew every year I know the question often gets asked by um the board and and the public like well they are growing but are they meeting um The Benchmark and so an average of where students should be would be we would want we want them at 50% and um as I've discussed before we are putting in platforms and programs and support um at the the teachers um working with our students to make sure that we get to attainment which is at that 50% level but you can see the trend with the cohort is that they continue to grow and

016that plus 29 means they grew 29 as a cohort they grew 29 Points um the second row shows those students who kind of were I told you were fluctuating in and out 206 students um and over that course of three years those um students uh grew uh plus 31 points all students together when we averag them out in math grew a total of 29 Points and so it goes through for each of these components for each of our cohorts you will notice this is our second graders and in 2021 this would have been the year that these students were in prek and we would have come back from the pandemic and were in some type of hybrid um if they were uh able to access our Early Learning Center uh program our Early Childhood Program

017and so it goes from each grade again here's here are current third graders again making growth you'll see that this is the trend um and I think this is what Mr arre was asking um do we see a trend of our students that stay with us do they continue to grow I will reiterate that we know that we need to accelerate that grow growth um and then we have uh platforms and um instructional work that is being put in place to help support that fast rate of growth that we need for our students uh but this is our third our current third graders again our fourth graders broken up again by that cohort to non-cohort and then this continues uh and then if somebody from the tell me if you want me to go through

018every slide okay I no but I had a I had a question um what so under the year uh 2122 you have a you have a score right yes and then under that it says low average so what um I see some of them say average or some of them say low and then low average what what's the difference what's the difference yeah okay so on the Rich score ranges it shows what percentile they're in so if they were low that means Across the Nation scores that are in low mean that they scored Across the Nation lower than the 21st percentile low average means they score between 21 and the 40th percentile average means they were in the 41 to 60 percentile and remember our Benchmark is to get us to the 50 at least

019to the 50 percentile and so what that shows is a comparison to their peers nationally of where where they fall and then that um score of I'm just going to take a score here that 155 to 171 to our second graders uh ending at 184 depending on what grade level you're in um that number will fluctuate for what determines if you're low low average average and so again this answers I believe Mr Au Does this answer kind of what you were asking in that uh April board meeting yeah I think it gets it that and um I'm not you know I'll have to digest some of this I'm not seeing kind of a discernable difference so far you know compared to the average um it seems like in some cases the non-core Hort jumped more

020which means we've done very well with those students maybe they started from kind of a lower base right yes and and and we've improved them but the overall score for our cohorts are higher than the non-cohort yes so in most in most cases and again we have some students um who um have significant scores and that can sometimes um change that non-cohort and so we look at those students and see if there's again ways that to make sure that we're accelerating and giving every student what they need because they have such a significant um score but for example if I'm looking at the eighth grade students yes you know the cohort low average low average got to average low average low average average that's that's exactly the type of improvement we want to see yes

021and and we want to continue to Trend upward and the um higher that we the higher scores that we get will move us into that average range uh and then I will end with you know we've talked about this um all year we'll talk about part of this in the Strategic plan as we move forward with our our district goals um as the buildings are working um on their school Improvement plan plans we had one team that was there today working on their school Improvement plan um and again it's around those um our keyword of Empower engage and impact and so how are we going to do that from an instructional level is that we're building uh the capacity of our teachers and our teams um and our principles that we're uh looking at student

022growth that we're continually uh closing the achievement Gap we have a wonderful coaching program um instructional coaches that we're using to help um Propel our work um we have very targeted focus on what we're going to be working on in reading and math this year we're using evidence-based practices all the things of uh to move us and move that Trend forwards collaborative cultures continuous Improvement making our decisions based on our data having our teams do walkthroughs doing professional development and then incorporating Innovative practices to engage our students um and again we're using all of this um and using feedback and um evaluation tools to help us uh become better at our craft okay well I know this was a lot of work to put together so I really appreciate it yes yes I might suggest

023you know instead of doing this three times a year as you come to us maybe you know once at the end of end of the each year just to I think you just saved Miss Camp a lot of hours yes um any additional questions about this all right thank you thank you all right we're gonna go back and see if uh Dr Mueller's online if not I will jump in there she is hi Dr Mueller can you hear me hi dreller can you hear me okay terrific well it's really great to see you so we've uh shared with the board that we are really so excited about the process that we uh engaged in under your guidance and uh we're really excited to present the Strategic plan this evening so I'm going to turn this

024over to you uh to share the PowerPoint and uh take it from there sounds good and you all can hear me okay yes okay sounds good so first of all I just want to say I'm so grateful again for the opportunity to come and work with your community your staff you have amazing students they're soet and so invested in the success of your district and so I'm really thrilled that the end result here of a plan to help guide you moving forward is really well done and it includes everyone's voice so with that um our purpose tonight is to report out on the process that we used and present to you the main components of the new plan and then outline the next steps that we're going to use to implement the plan that's the

025hard work believe it or not it wasn't getting you to this point but what's next is going to be even more challenging in a good way I want to make sure I give you time to ask questions and then ultimately our goal here is to seek your approval on the components of the plan to help us move forward with uh creating all the additional Communications and tools that we use to implement the plan and starting to roll that out with your community your school community so that's our purpose for tonight again why do we do strategic planning why is this so important it's an opportunity to bring all of your audiences your constituents together to collectively engage about our why our why being our students uh it provides intention and focus for us because we

026continue to think about how do we improve and you know that is that is part of the why for school systems right is to focus on that continuous Improvement it guides decision making often you find yourselves as board members grappling with decisions and sometimes it's nice to have that strategic plan in front of you to say now wait what did our constituents say to be our priorities and where does this particular fall within the priority or decision- making that we're doing here it helps us set very specific actions for Progress to meet the goals that have been identified as priorities and it offers us the ability to monitor evaluate and adjust as we need to it helps us be smarter with the work that we're doing for the benefit of our students so the process

027we use is we we spent quite a quite a good amount of time assessing the health of the district the state of the district and from there we we looked at what you previously had as a mission and vision statement and we we worked them a little bit we went through a process called a SWAT activity where we identifi the strengths of the district places where we know we need to grow opportunities for continuous growth or Improvement and what threatens the success of the school district we took time to Define our values that we hold for our students upon graduation we really Dove deep into understanding the needs that your school system faces and then from there we determine the priorities and and we asked from the community work group what are some areas for

028goals for the the district team to operationalize the plan so that's the process we used and we met over four times and one of the things that we did before we met Community work group and while we met with the community work group is we conducted a series of focus groups and uh before we even met with that Comm work group met with these different um subgroups of your staff but we also spent time talking to your students and I love this photo of your kids and this I'll tell you is one of the highlights of my entire experience with cre which say says a lot because every experience I've had has been positive with you all but these kids are outstanding and uh we learned a lot from them and I think probably one

029of the most things I learned from them is that Co really hurt them and they are eager to be in school and they're eager to gain from their teachers and from the school system what they need to be successful moving on after gradu they see that value and that's really outstanding to then uh what I don't have number of participants that but I would say we were 40 to 60 every night when we came together uh we had four meetings with that Comm Community workers and we also had internal staff that were serving as facilitators and I would say we had really high level of engagement at all those meetings at the last we asked everyone to complete a quick exit slip and to share in one word how they would describe the process and

030this is a word cloud from that where if you're familiar with word clouds the larger words are the ones that were repeated the most participants and the smaller words are like maybe one from um from a participant but you can see really positive experience right for people it good it was productive exciting energizing collaborative enlightening fful is really nice to see in there so really great response from those who participated so let's talk about the components of the plan the first one is mission right and I always like using the slide with groups to help clarify that the mission is what we're doing today it's our why today vision is where we're headed what our future what tomorrow is so I thrilled to present to you after four meetings and hard work from that worker

031the new mission statement is engage and Empower our students to positively impact their community and and future along with that that's our why the day where we're headed what the future is driving communities through inclusivity collaboration and academic Excellence then we identified the core values for our students and again these are values that we hold for our students upon graduation so we think it's important for our students to be accountable that our students have the ability to collaborate we value equity for our students Innovation inte and respect so we ask the group to Define what each of those core values mean for our students and here you will see the collective definition from the group about what of those mean for us so if you look at for example Equity because Equity means so much

032to every for this school district we Define equity as ensuring every student feels see and achieves a sense of belonging in the school community so I can let you take a look here at the others and again these are these are the values that we hold for us what does it mean for our students that's how we Define these may I ask a question absolutely why wasn't educated one of them well that's a really good question and we we will talk about that a little bit with priorities I think when we do strategic planning with groups I'm getting a lot of feedback is it just me talking or someone else asking a question is it just me um when we work with strategic planning groups I am often surprised how education or educ doesn't become

033a core value or doesn't even become a priority in the Strategic plan and I think the reason it doesn't come up it's because it's assume right people are assuming that well that's our why that is our why that's what we're doing back your mission is engaging empowering students to positively impact their community and future education's not in there same with vision although you see academic Excellence with vision hold on to that question see if it shows up in priorities for you so if we look at our priorities we landed on five different priori areas for the district and if you look at yellow one expand student programs and services that's where you're going to find a lot of action around the education pie you're also going to find it underneath the where it says ensure

034instructional quality and Effectiveness the other priorities that came out was we want to strengthen family and Community engagement you can see an attention to the whole child here with enhancing student and staff wellbeing and then the green is optimizing the funding and safeguarding fiscal responsibility and stewardship so often and I know Dr K asked me this question and we talked about this with your group often when we do strategic planning our priorities for guiding us forward over the next couple years usually land in four buckets so when you look at these five priorities I think you'll see that they fall into the typical four buckets the first bucket is around student performance and our student so you can kind of see that reflected here one of the other buckets is around our staff and in

035this case you see that with blue uring instructional quality and Effectiveness the third bucket usually is around Communications or community outreach and you see that with the the red here with the engagement and the fourth bucket usually falls into operation and Facilities which you're seeing with the green bucket so when we think about that question that you just asked about educate although it's not clearly stated as educating that's what the I I would argue the yellow the blue and the purple do right we focus on those priorities that's what we're doing educating now um if I move forward this is how the whole plan in one little nice package if you will uh this is kind of like the aesthetic of the plan right like here are the main components of the plan here you'll

036see the mission the vision the core values and the priorities stated you'll see a QR code that takes that'll take people to the website to see the plan in more detail so this is a really high level this components and that's what we're asking you to to approve tonight you'll see that we landed on a tagline for the district as part of your branding and promoting the district with engage Empower and impact and if I go back into your mission statement you will see those three words in the mission that we're you know we engage we Empower and we impact so when I go back to the poster here um you can see that right above the the 2024 through 2028 strategic plan engage Empower impact and we can really lean into that for a

037lot of your branding efforts moving forward as well as the the that we created for the Strategic plan which is Unified for our Student Success now this is the the high level piece again that we're asking you to approve tonight but this doesn't impact what happens right it doesn't impact education that comes in the actual details of operationalizing the plan so we met with your District leadership team and we asked them to take the components of the plan and map out the strategies we're going to deploy as action to enact the plan for just the first year for the 2024 2025 school year so when you look across the top here and it's probably kind of small for you but you'll see that we set student goals for Education right so um English language arts

038100% of our students can actively interact and comprehend grade level test Tex sorry at least 75% of our students will demonstrate Mastery on our common speci that's a goal for English language arts you can see that we have similar goals for math we set a goal for a attendant the percentage of chronically Trent students by 10% you can see we have some goals for Behavior goals for graduation goals for our operations and sustainability and a goal for staff retention what we like about this as a team if we have many more goals it's really hard to have success get to thin so we tried to keep our goals really tight to ensure success then what we did to operationalize the plan is we listed out how are we going to measure success with those goals

039and that's what's going to get reported back to you all as a board so that you can see are we making progress towards meeting our goals or do we need to you know double down on some strategies do we need to shift the work that we're doing to get a better return on our investment of our time so that's that's work that going to come and be presented to you as we move forward if I continue on the details of the plan you'll see here that your team has mapped out in relation to each of the five priorities from the plan they've mapped out what are some strategies that we're going to deploy during the 2024 2025 school year to reach those goals so let me kind of help you understand maybe I'll pick an

040easy one family and community engagement is one of your priority areas in order to to achieve the goal of 100% of students can actively interact with and comprehend level time under family and Community engagement parent University training will provide sessions to help families support their students interaction with grade level text at home you see how they're lined up to to make sure that they're success with that one goal um if I continue in that same o if I continue in that same area let me go back one um under student programs and services if I'm still focusing on English language arts we're going to ensure and offer programs and services that enrich literacy we're going to offer after school tutoring to reinforce classroom instruction and provide additional practice opportunities and we're going to create opportunities

041for literacy clubs that offer pleasure and comprehension outside the classroom so these are strategies that you're District leadership team has identified um for working towards that goal under the lens of our strategic plan and we Carri that through all the priority areas here you can see how we're supporting ly through funding and fiscal responsibility this is the plan that will be brought forward in terms of monitoring for you all you can see again are we making the progress that we need to make and if not then we we know that we need to adjust our strategies so what's next with all this again tonight is about sharing with you all the main components of the Strategic plan that's being recommended by your community work group that was consistently of 40 to 65 people that came

042over four nights and said these are these are the things that are most important to us in terms of our mission our vision our core values and our priorities for continued Improvement we want you to take action on that if you're comfortable doing so tonight and then from there what we'll do is one of the things that you get in terms of working with us around your strategic plan is you get all the communications and tools to share this work with your community so you know some of the things that we do is included there two of the things that want to talk about is we're going to create a promotional brochure that you can use for your marketing efforts in terms of attracting uh some students and families but also attracting businesses to your

043community as well as attracting hires and so we'll include the Strategic plan within a promotional brochure that includes like points of Pride for the school district we'll also create a video that helps roll out the Strategic plan in a way that's accessible to your to your community and Dr Cara has worked to identify and seek uh interest from those who participated in the planning efforts to do some testimonial for that video and then the hard workk right we operationalize the plan and that's kind of getting into the details that I was just sharing you sharing with you from your District leadership team we're going to do progress reports to you all and to our community we're going to create an online dashboard to to keep track of our progress so anybody can look at our

044progress over time and again we we'll have to monitor evaluate and respond if we're not making the progress that we need to with our investment of time um part of the progress report to the community is going to be through your regular newsletters and we're we're right now working on a newsletter that's going to go out to your community as you know kind of in sync with the start of the school year and we'll be able to not Shar the new strategic plan through that we'll also be able to share some progress already being made in the different priority areas of so I know that I a lot at um I'm happy to answer questions but we wanted to make sure that we say thank you to the members that we could get our hands

045on their names of all the people that have been involved over time um it's been four months of work if not longer and uh you know I'm just again really thrilled to see how this has all come together for you all and I'll pause and let Dr Cara insert any additional information I know we have a couple individuals maybe in the audience that wanted to say a few words but we're also happy to answer any questions at this time I know we have some people in the audience but we're not going to make you say anything um they've been certainly supportive and we do appreciate you being here tonight we're really excited about moving this forward um and starting to get this out there and uh So the plan is for the first year is

046to get this socialized we're going to have posters and all the classrooms all the um all the offices um so that we can start working on the work and communicating that my intent is also to go out to uh various Community venues to share our strategic plan so the community knows where we're going and the work that we are going to do any other any other questions that's yes beond I'm thinking like responsibility sorry my mic's on now um like on fysical responsibility on page 16 you know incorporate preved maintenance practices awesome develop a long-term capital plan awesome but you know something about um you know making sure that you know we're not running deficit spending or you know that we're you know looking at you know surpluses you know maybe there may be a

047year where we need to go have a little deficit spending but on a three-year average or something you know how do we how do we craft that so that we're not uh wildly spending the new Revenue that we have coming in right and I think that's what the the the job of the board is to to set those uh set those parameters as we go through each year so absolutely that is part of your your role I love that I love that the board is willing to engage like that I'm sure Jason will appreciate it too a member of our audience Mr farore uh he was part of the process and I think he has decided he'd like to add a few things so no no Nelson just to to clarify I know one of

048the things that we focus on Ken was at my table uh and was the fact that when we're communicating to the community specifically about financial accountability uh and uh being appropriately use of the finances it's good to let the community know you're not just spending your money on every single thing that comes along as a whim and things like that and so this the the part of that was a reinforcement is it it fares well in the community when they know you're not just chasing every little whim but you're doing things that are structurally needed and so I think that the way that the school district is being run and has been being run uh it it far as well to communicate the fact that we want to point was the other day when it

049was presented regarding the Middle School changes there's a lot of things you could have done but you chose the most coste effective Jason you know you did a great job uh wrapping all that up the other day but the the reality is is you could build another building somewhere you could bu buy more land you could do all sorts of things you're not doing those things you're you're being as coste efficient as possible and that kind of messaging to the community calms people when they look at 70% of the tax bill goes to schooling and when they look at that you're not just being abusive and just saying well we're just we think we're whatever you know you're you're being you're being as guarded about the spending as you would your own finances and I

050think that messaging is what part of the point with this here was the community interaction and letting people know that that was just just two cents in regarding that particular aspect of it thank you appreciate that feedback thank you all right I think Dr Mueller I think we covered everything thank you I look like I'm on the face of the sun I apologize for that I don't know there we go know in two places tonight so anyway thank you so much for being here virtually um we look forward to our continued work together on this project great job thank you yeah thank you thank you again you guys have a beauti beautiful Community I know you serve a number of communities in terms of uniting them it it's been a really fun process you have
