people that may assemble indoors this in-person meeting is limited to the board of education members am i muted i'm muted okay let's start again um we're holding our board of education meeting at anthony wayne middle school again this evening due to the limited number of people that may assemble indoors this in-person meeting is limited to the board of education members some administrators our board of education attorney however the meeting is open for public view and public participation in the same manner as our other meetings using zoom new jersey regulations required districts report graduation results and lee to the district board of education and also aligned with the data that was submitted to the new jersey department of education as a graduation snapshot as follows so i'm going to deliver a required report that is also

has been tracking for the past month with about two to three new coveted cases on any given day this past week however our local office of emergency management noted that there was an uptick where approximately five cases per day were being reported due to the fact that multiple people within the same household became ill with covid wayne is still in his great position due to the fact that while those in close proximity became ill the spread in the community remains low and hospitalizations remain very low this reflects what we've been seeing in our schools up to this point we're fortunate to have four weeks of in-person instruction but recently there were some coveted related disruptions at some of our schools since our last board meeting we've had to take action due to positive co-testing results

of individuals connected to our schools as a result cohort b at john f kennedy elementary went to all virtual instruction for two days due to four cases reported there and a number of students and staff members are in quarantine at ryerson elementary due to a positive covic test there wing township is sponsoring coven 19 testing during the month of october the details can be found at the wayne township website the program is for all wayne residents and also all wayne board of education employees regardless of their reg over their residency testing will be conducted on wednesdays outside in a tent near the health department from 9am to 1pm okay so onto a report about athletics our fall sports programs that are allowed during the pandemic have entered into the competition part of the season this

week we have our traditional valley versus hills football game which will be played at wayne hills on friday with the kickoff at 7 pm based on the crowd restrictions in place there are not nearly enough tickets available when considering the thousands of people who would normally attend this game we are happy to report that the game will be broadcast live on channel 12. so anyone in the area interested in viewing the game will be able to do so i'd like to report on the diversity equity and inclusion goal okay at the high school level we're happy to report that teachers in the social studies department are beginning oops let me get to the next page let's talk together we're beginning to use the choices curriculum add-on which was developed at brown university well choices has

been in use in the wayne township public schools for about 10 years this year as part of our goal we purchased additional units that enhance our requirements to meet the amistad mandate as well as address several current issues we're excited that our teachers will be receiving training on october 28th the district will be focusing on racial slavery in the americas resistance freedom and legacies students and staff members are able to discuss a number of critical race related issues but the choices program allows students to make their own decisions program highlights a diverse collection of primary resources that surround each issue a goal also calls for the district to establish a basis for an internal and external review of our district for issues related diversity to diversity equity and inclusion the administration is recommending a contract

this evening that will allow us to bring tamika reese who met with the education committee of the board of education this evening to provide us with that external review and also professional development another contract is included on the agenda to approve gomo educational services to provide the district with a speaker for upcoming november 3rd professional development day gomo educational services seeks to build the capacity of educators to focus on empowering student voice and agency by helping staff to recognize social and cultural barriers to student achievement with board of vet approval new york state teacher of the year alpha son suso will be providing an excellent boost toward meeting our goal by creating a strong connection with our educators around this important effort across all of our schools once the foundation is established for this goal

the district will be in position to take further action on a number of other issues including the discussion about the wayne valley indian mascot as far as a technology update i'd like to provide the board with some information happy to report progress with educational technology especially for our elementary teachers and students the new laptops that were purchased to replace the chromebooks that were originally issued to our elementary teachers have been received in the district and right now some of our teachers at randall carter elementary are helping us by using the computers for a trial to make sure that everything is working properly we the reason we're replacing chromebooks is due to the fact that there is a known glitch with these computers that makes them prone to choppy audio and video as well as drop

google meet sessions we expect that our elementary teachers will have their new computers within the next two weeks the district continues to work toward developing the next phase of our return to school plan we're considering a number of options that will enhance the learning experience for our students and help our teachers work within this hybrid and virtual learning environment as part of those preparations mrs reichman convened the meeting of the distance learning committee which met this week mrs reichman would like to share with the board some of the discussion from the distance learning committee good evening everybody um the distance learning committee met yesterday with myself uh teachers cindy hennen donna del moro lisa klink maria gennart michelle hoover and diane nigro parents enrico leo and brad siegel were in attendance we president ida ferrante

and administrators deborah fodie and matt mcmunelli we discussed the current plan it was our second meeting um and so we started this meeting with the positive and talking about all the success that we achieved first and most important we celebrated the fact that we were able to open school safely our students are thrilled to be back in their buildings with their teachers our teachers are also thrilled to be back with their students it's a very different time but everyone has done an excellent job to keep our doors open overall it was discussed that schools feel very safe um it is nice to know that we are in week four and all of the processes and protocols and ppe that we have put in place has been very successful there have been some glitches with the

technology as dr tobacc just mentioned at the elementary level uh we quickly um jumped to figure out how to remedy and make sure that we had a solution in place so new laptops are on their way the laptops have been super successful at the secondary level in our middle school and high school classes and we're feeling very comfortable that once the teachers have these in place fewer students will be dropped and fewer technical issues will occur during the classroom sessions uh it was also discussed that there will um there are some additional professional development needs that teachers have we have a whole bunch of things planned for our november 3rd in service day and a meeting was set today and there are other professional development opportunities that are in progress and will be offered soon

to meet these needs and we started talking about the next phase of the plan the current plan runs through november 25th based on the city on the committee feedback and the information they gathered it seems like what's most desired for the next phase would be to look at ways to increase in-person and hybrid time learning time with the teacher so we were discussing some of the things that can be considered and this conversation will continue that's it for my report so finally during this reporting period there were no incidents reported as hiv sorry forgot me thank you both for the substantive report i just wanted to add one thing about the uh township testing for employees that don't live in wayne they recommend you bring your id so that there won't be any issue when

you go there not as a wayne resident um but as an employee they'll know that you're entitled to have the free testing like everyone else so and of course we thank the township for this initiative it's great for all of our staff and residents and students um mr moffatt revisions to the agenda please yes we have a few tonight uh in the area of tea emergent human resources items one through ten uh under t4 approval of revised items number one line one id 8508 revise loa to read as follows september 2020 to november 11 2020 paid sick days november 12 2020 through february 16 2021 fmla slash njfla february 17 2021 through april 30 2021 wea extension without pay without benefits another revised item is number seven under the same uh t4 again line item

you um so my name is uh katie cluck i live at 34 hillcrest drive um thank you for your commitment to diversity equity and inclusion i have a few questions about um what's happening um so you mentioned committees before um could you please go into more detail about who will be on them and as well may please lay out your plans to address students statements of experiencing racism and bigotry in our schools as well in relation to the curriculum you said that um the teachers say that we'll be focused on um slavery and empowerment i assume that's about um black history um and specifically history but um is there any plans to address um disparities in the english uh curriculum as well as um there's to certain disparities um with um latino history um asian

american history and um uh indigenous history um i just wanna say um thank you so much for your support and i really all of us students of color and alumni really appreciate uh what you're doing um thank you so much thank you next hi can you hear me yes yes hi my name is lovely medar uh 23 villains avenue so um thank you for committing to bringing more diversity um i just wanted to bring up some points that you guys could possibly you know bring change for um so like katie just said um we like we don't just want black history we want asian history and like other like people of color history in our curriculum and we also want other like marginalized groups such as lgbtq community and like you know just other like

like different cultures and just you know more variety and also um we also want to change the mascot we've brought this up multiple times now and like we can't really be diverse if the very thing that stands for our school is racist and also um we all we also want to i want to bring up i want to bring up some uh discrimination against other religions um for example um muslims are very disrespected uh jews are very disrespected six are very disrespected in our school um i've gotten told that jesus is the only way and i'm not i don't practice that religion and that was kind of hurtful and also that like you know includes um anti-semitism islamophobia everything else um also i also want to bring up fat shaming um that's also a really

big issue where um students are made fun of by others like for example in this one group chat um a boy was like um yes you girls better start um you know getting skinny because no one's gonna want you if you're fat um so that's a really big issue too um so and we also i also want to bring up something else um there's a lot of ableism in our schools for example um students say that our slur like it's nothing and you know we become like more educated about why it's not right to say the arsler and we also want to um you know just learn more about that because i haven't learned about that yet i haven't learned about other like you know disabilities and how i can help or whatever and also

it doesn't help that um i don't i i haven't had a class with anyone with a physical disability and like there's no contact between us and them and i feel like that's wrong because they're like just as human as us and like we should we should be allowed to have the classes together and interact and also i also want to talk about the sexism in our schools um boys often make you know dirty responses and like comments about girls as bodies at school and it's it doesn't feel safe to go to school like like when that like when that happens then yeah that's about it thank you for committing to you know more equality thank you for your input next hi my name is marissa budnik and i live at 38 clinton lane like they

said before i'm very happy to hear of your commitment to diversity inclusion and equity um and to hear that teachers will be receiving trainings to diversify the history curriculum and i'm sorry if i missed this but who will be leading those trainings and like they asked before um is it just for black history or does it also include latinx asian or arab history as well um something else that i think is important to discuss is diversifying the english curriculums and what is required for students to read so i guess i'd like to hear more addressing that we also need to talk about teachers playing into racist behavior in class like singling out muslim students out on 9 11 or teachers saying the n word to prove a point um so how will you how will

you address that with teachers um plus over a hundred stories told on the wayne for on the racism and wayne school's instagram page so again i'm very happy to hear of the history curriculum trainings um and i'd love to hear more on who's running them but i'd also love to hear more on diversifying the english reading curriculum changing the mascot which is also very important what we've been bringing up for a while um in addressing past students experiences and how you'll make wayne schools a safer space thank you thank you hiya this is alan tampesqueue41 gibbs uh i have a comment in question relating to the superintendent report you had mentioned a covet case in quarantine at a school in wayne apparently when this occurred a notification letter appropriately went out from that school's principal

to the school students and parents but not to the overall uh wayne community the wayne school community um my question and comment uh knowing that such incidences are occurring at many schools and not many but several schools in new jersey and that it'll probably make the local newspaper and that students and parents will forward such notices to neighbors and friends who go to other schools is it possible and have has the district considered sending out such notices to the overall wayne school community and not just to the school that had the incident um this way we're proactive about it and it it you know we're going to hear about it anyway so that's my uh comment thank you thank you i don't see any more hands can i get a movement president see no one

else in the queue i move to close the public session mr bubba okay moving on to the j items can i get a mover mr share mr bubba before we call a roll we'll do our committee reports at this time i'd like to volunteer to go first this is albany's thank you the finance committee met tonight and attendance were the business administrator willie moffitt and as well as the assistant business administrator cheryl lady board members eileen albanese matt giordano catherine kazan we reviewed the agenda items for tonight there were no budget transfer items to be reviewed under purchasing updates uh the amaresco or ec2 plan the paperwork has been is in the finalization process and is now being reviewed by council or we've reviewed the 20 2020 2021 budget update uh we got some additional

figures as far as additional cares money uh that will be awarded uh we don't have an exact dollar amount yet we did receive some coronavirus relief aid into the district yesterday that's additional grant money we had a discussion about our on an employment update we do have an increase in our unemployment charges that are being uh that are being challenged at the state level and we have not yet seen our second quarter uh bill to see whether or not those challenges have been accepted uh we received an audit an audit update the auditors have been in-house for two weeks they believe they'll have approximately one more meet one more week to come in and then they'll begin wrapping up so they do expect the deadline has been extended till january 8th for them to provide

a final audit report but based on their trajectory we do expect they'll be finished before that we had a discussion about food service guarantees um and there's still an ongoing negotiation with the food service company relating to last year we got a final report on some grants issued and the business office has a position open for a purchasing agent they've received some applications and they're in the process of interviewing for that position and that's concludes our report thank you okay mrs put up thank you mrs albanese thank you madam president the education committee met this evening at 5 00 pm um our administrative liaison mrs reichman was there in addition to board members mrs cher mrs kumar and myself uh in attendance um excuse me we reviewed the minutes of last education committee meeting um

we discussed uh student placement within the district we examined the district's dual agreements with passaic county community college and bergen county community college we were introduced to tamika reese via zoom who will help guide us through our diversity equity and inclusion committee uh there will be a town hall meeting for special education parents on october 19th it will be presented by dr dana sur and mrs jennifer verano members of the district special ed team uh the distance learning committee met yesterday and dr toback gave you a report on that as well as more information about our diversity committee thank you very much thank you mrs puttup is there anyone else that has the report mr duffy good evening thank you mr president uh today the technology and safety committee met with uh myself mr bubba

mr padlock and mr bashard um i'll reiterate what dr toback had said in his administrative report that the chromebooks are going to be updated they are new laptops that should be here within the next two should be in the teacher's hands for the elementary schools within the next two to three weeks 325 of those devices the uh updated chromebooks will be used by the paris and we are also looking into something called a swivel for math and science which i'm still learning what that is but that is it for the technology and safety committee thank you thank you mr duffy was there anyone else that needed to report this evening okay i think we got everybody roll call mr moffitt roll call on item j mrs albanese yes mr bubba yes mr duffy yes mr

giordano yes mrs kumar yes mr pavlak yes this is put up yes mr shearer yes and mrs kazan yes motion carries okay at this point since this is a public works session i'm trying to find the item [Music] where we approve this to be carried over or or yeah thank you trying to find it okay approval r can i get a mover i'll move this is albanese mr bubba was that you okay roll call mr moffett roll call on r yes mr bubba mr duffy yes mr giordano yes mrs kumar yes mr pavlak yes mrs put up yes mr sheer yes mrs albanese and mrs kazan yes okay moving on to the emergent items education yes can i get a mover mr duffy mr giordano any discussion okay that's something here it's gonna say one

of the items we're approving this evening is the structured learning experiences for our students from members of the community businesses in the community and if you go to that item on the agenda you'll see a list of 18 that are willing to give our students job training and i want to thank them roll call on s items mr duffy yes mr giordano yes mrs kumar yes mr pavlak yes mrs put up yes mr sheer yes mrs albanese yeah mr bubba yes and mrs kazan yes motion carries thank you human resources t can i get a mover i'm loaf this is cherry second second i think that was mr pavlak first mr pavlak yes two seconds discussion anyone okay well mr mr giordano yes mrs kumar yes mr pavlak yes mrs puttup yes mr sheer yes

mrs albanese yes mr bubba yes mr duffy yes and mrs kazan yes motion carries okay nothing under policy we'll go to u any discussion okay i'm all calling mr moffat on v mrs kumar yes mr pavlak yes mrs put up yes mrs sheer yes mrs albanese yes mr bubba yes mr duffy yes mr giordano yes and mrs kazan yes motion carries thank you and now for our second public portion this portion of the meeting is open to citizens for any comment on any topic residents are to state their names addresses and subject matter comments may be limited to five minutes in person members of the public are discouraged from speaking negatively about an employee or student the board bears no responsibility for comments made by the public comments regarding employees or students cannot be legally

responded to by the board other comments may be responded to tonight or at subsequent meetings under all business mover mr giordano mr bubba okay i see a hand hi can you hear me yes okay hi my name is katie clock i live at 34 hellcrest drive um i called in before about um diversity equity inclusion um i want to talk right now particularly about english curriculums um there are certain disparities um in them and certain books are left out um some that are actually of like extreme note in our society um there's no james baldwin books in the english curriculum there's very little tony morrison some of the only harlem renaissance writer is langston hughes there are very few asian and latino writers and um there is also its gender disparity in them which is

um concerning because we should be hearing from a variety of voices as well there's um some significant disparities in the history of curriculum as they have brought up before but um for example the philippine american war is completely absent except for um discussion in the opposition of it but not actually what happened um which is um of extreme concern considering there was um a significant death in the philippines and um students should be educated on that and there's a variety of other issues similarly that have been overlooked as well as just similar concerns about what is like what is happening and they're often addressed as current events issues but these aren't um not just current these are very old concerns that have been around for a very long time um and uh there's the way

that the pacing works is a lot of modern history gets skipped which um can be an issue because like people will miss things about what happened in the 80s and the 90s and that is that is both history and incredibly important and it shouldn't just be an elective considering that is incredibly important and history we should acknowledge these people and um as well as in the um discussion of uh japanese internment um they uh this is a consistent issue as we'll talk about um something bad that happens and then how it went away but we don't really go into who was leading these movements like um yuri kojoyama was one of the leaders in the um redress movement to address reparations for japan being turned japanese americans so i just have some concerns with our

curriculum and i really want to make sure that our everyone is not only represented but taught because this is accurate history doesn't just benefit the people who relate to it it is benefits all of us because to to teach history accurately is just simply to teach it correctly it has to be diverse because otherwise it's not history thank you so much and um i really appreciate what you guys have been doing thank you thank you next caller hi can you hear me yes you're on all right i'm lovely medar 2017. um so i just wanted to like ask some questions um that could like possibly you know answer later or something um do you think that the current staff is representative of the community um of our schools and um do you think there's any

biases within teachers because like someone had someone mentioned before um they do say slurs my own a push teacher my apus history teacher said the n word without hesitation and that's just that's so wrong that's completely wrong and um those teachers are the ones who create the culture of our school they're the ones that you know students look up to they're the ones who you know like run the schools other than like the administration they're the ones who we like see on the day on a daily basis so you know we should really be looking into that more in you know solving like problems like you know teachers saying slurs and you know being disrespectful towards your margin marginalized groups um i also want to point out the fact that i really hope that your

commitment is not performative um because some of like the way you just look i hope that the way you discipline students about racial issues about you know um xenophobia about you know homophobia um anti-semitism whatever um i hope you actually give proper consequences for those students because in the past you guys haven't like i'm going to be frank with you guys that i i haven't seen that um i've had i have personal stories about that too um and my friends have like you know spoken up about that and it's like discipline like the way discipline guy people should be similar to like the values you want to uphold like you can't say oh yeah we commit to equality but then not you know somehow you know punish students who endanger people of color or you

know marginalized groups um so yeah are our schools are our schools discipline policies consistent with our schools district goals um also i have another point um we have to you know be sensitive to how like like when marginalized groups speak up because we're often lost and pressured by you know the majority of people because in our schools are 85 white um so we have to you know listen instead of speak over them and um in the same way you have to have a high expectation for other students you know other students should be listening they should be you know involved you can't just you know listen to people of color and not you know expect students to do the same um that's like that's just like the basis of inclusivity um everyone has to be

respectful of differences and especially when um minority like speaks up about it um you have to acknowledge like the differences like students may possess so a culturally culturally responsive curriculum encourages like students you know understanding where other students are coming from and recognizing that we don't have the same privilege like you know we we all you know go through different things we all identify as different you know individuals and um that starts in the classroom you know we we should be allowed to have a sense of identity in our classrooms um without you know teachers or you know other students you know stopping that because our classrooms play the biggest roles in our students succeeding through the establishment of um equal and safe and just like diverse you know inclusive classes um and yeah so

we don't want to be um not racist we want to be anti-racist so the difference is that like you can't just say i'm not racist you have to actually like fight against it to be like to bring change so you have to be anti-but a bias you have to you know yeah it's gonna be a lot of effort to do that you know um you can't just say don't do this you have to like actually you know enforce that and um that's that like a lot of that comes from self-reflection so you understand where you're you know coming from and where other students are coming from um as the board of education you guys are a role model for this mission and that means you guys also have to you know without the school values

like authentically that's your time all right thank you i'm sorry to interrupt but anyone else that presidency no one else is hand raised they've moved to close the public session mr giordano okay dr toback here to address any of the questions raised okay so for our students and former students that spoke um when it comes to the social studies curriculum i encourage you to log on to the internet and go to choices.edu and that'll give you a very good overview of some of the types of lessons that will be taught so for example i just pulled up one of the um the lessons it's a collection of lessons but um one of them is united states and afghanistan another is a brazil a history of change another is china on the world stage laying the

u.s response there's another lesson about climate change questions of justice colonization and independence in africa history revolution and reform new directions for cuba immigration and the u.s policy debate and indian independence and the question of um partition so let's just give you a sampling of some of the lessons that are available in this program and like i said i encourage you to go take a look and um if you come back to the next wording you can tell us how you feel about the information that we shared as far as i believe it's choices the choices program we have a person from the program that will be doing the professional development the next question is from mr tempescu and it has to do with the incidents hovid cases where we notice notified school communities so

we do work with our department of health and we kind of gauge um from their response about whether a community response is needed so in other words do we notify the entire community about a particular situation at this point the the district has not gone to nor have we needed to go to a community-wide notification however mr timpesky's point is noted that ultimately there are different ways obviously that people find out about this because ultimately letters are sent to the school communities and so perhaps we can do something with our website where if there are letters that are sent we can have an archive of the different letters that are sent out um so we'll have to look at that and certainly that's something for the school district to consider did you want to address

the uh the committees mrs freshman and how we're starting news informing them first of all sure um this week we did our first intake session there were oh i'm sorry this past week we did our first intake session myself along with several administrators joined depauw with two of our former students who had expressed an interest and shared some concerns and ideas over the summer we could speak with them over the summer and let them know that they would have an opportunity um to speak with some administrators so that we can gather some of their ideas because obviously we wanted to consider all that um beginning next week all of our committee chairs will be identified and they will be working to put together their subcommittees and we'll start addressing curriculum instruction um we will be

talking about symbols and mascots and we will be looking at our hr department and as it pertains to hiring and just even diversifying as we interview are the questions we ask and the information that we see so more information will follow and as the committee starts meet we'll get more and more involved and we'll continue to provide updates and just one final note um ultimately we have a one-year goal and so we've made quite a bit of progress but there are other things that the goal calls for and so all those things we hope to have done by the conclusion of the school year so it will take time not every aspect of the goal can be completed but we are certainly well on our way sorry any old business hi oh hi yeah um

i just wanted to add um as far as some of the students talking um we did mention as well that we're on boarding uh miss tamika reese as a um to help with training the teachers on things like implicit bias which is something that they were mentioning not outright but that's what you're talking about when you're talking about um favoring certain things over other certain and having certain stereotypes so we are bringing on someone to train the teachers so i just wanted to mention that as part of kind of one of the questions that was asked thank you very much anyone else new business board member comments okay well then i'll finish up real quick uh thank you all for your input uh you have definitely given us some food for thought and i'll be
