we've received okay so we have a lot of people here for public comment tonight thank you for coming um I'm going to limit since we have so many limit each person to five minutes I will raise my hand when you have a minute to go if so uh the first up is um Bob or bab and the topic is Staff safety yes come down here please right there right here like all good teachers I'm gonna make do with what I have hi I'm Amy Bob I am a teacher at cre money Middle School I've been there for six years this is my 24th year in education I'm going to need a little crowd participation I would like you to participate as well everybody put your hands up ready put a finger down if you've been
asked to do someone else's job more than 10 times this school year put a finger down if you've had to break up a fight and put yourself between safety keeping a child safe and someone else put a finger down if you've been told F off shut up talking to me who is you talking to when asked to follow Basic School expectation put a finger down if you've been sworn at by a parent for a comment or a phone call home regarding their child put a finger down if you've been given less time to complete the work and more work in which to do with zero compensation in time or money put a finger down if you are expected to have math and reading test scores go up but you have less time to teach math
or reading put a finger down if your ability to do your job is based on how someone else does their job on one test put a finger down if you are the last to know Vital Information about someone that you work closely with but at the same time criticize for not getting to know them well enough or not understand what they're going through put a finger down if you had to console Comfort support a sobbing coworker because they are so overwhelmed and stressed out they cannot possibly face another day doing doing what they have to do put a finger down if you have had a weapon such as a loaded gun brought to your workplace the halves and the Have Nots we are the ones that have to live the daily reality of the decisions
you are making based on student discipline and student consequences we are the ones that put ourselves on the front line every single day and have to face the ramifications of asking a child to put their Hood down put their phone away pick up a pencil why do you not have a pencil and come to work and yet still justify why our test scores are low to you and to the parents we are the ones that are being questioned all the PBIS in the world is not going to correct its students behavior who has over 80 tardies over 15 discipline referrals a bag of chips is not going to make them get to class on time we are denying them the support and the love that we need when we keep them in the building we
want to know why MEC is not up for consideration to send a child that needs additional help why are we told no that they should be in a building of 1,200 and walk around in an unsafe environment and not be sent somewhere where they can get one-on-one time and attention I've heard um additionally another question I would like to ask you do you have any idea how many students are coded eo2 which is an administrative decision but not an out of school suspension but in the place of an out of school suspension just so when you run those reports in Skyward it doesn't come up as an out of school suspension how many students in the high school have been placed on distance learning for over a month without getting the time attention and education
they deserve how many students have IEPs that are then being home and not getting the legal minutes that they deserve and the education that they deserve because we don't want our numbers going up I apologize I'm getting a little we are losing fantastic staff every single day because they are so beat down that they cannot face another day fantastic people and we are lowering the standards for some fantastic children that deserves so much more please consider all of these questions hear us get beside us come walk a mile in my shoes I will be happy to show you around and help you out thank you thank you [Applause] okay next up is Christine conin um and the topic is Mooney education [Applause] center I'm Christine Conlin and I am from MEC this has been an
extremely trying school year for the staff and students at MEC various scenarios have been given and changed repeatedly which has caused a lot of stress no one needs that but especially those in a therapeutic environment it has caused students to consider dropping out of school vote no and allow MEC to remain open as is until the new addition is completed let us continue to support students with significant social emotional needs help those students who are falling through the cracks be a safe space for kids that learn differently and are not successful in the general School environment transition is hard for many kids but especially those with trauma and instability having students leave their space space save space and temporarily return to a place where they are unwanted unsuccessful and unloved is a recipe for disaster
in The Last 5 Years the staff at MEC has supported countless students and seen over 50 students graduate that probably would not have if they were at the high school MEC has more from an alternative severe Behavior placement to a therapeutic environment many fear that if you keep MEC open next year it will turn into a place for kids with severe behaviors to be sent and forgotten about something needs to be done for these physically aggressive kids having con consquences would be a great place to start the kids that are out of control need more support the current staff and student population at MEC is not the appropriate place for many of our most violent students anymore as it was in the past this is because we have been staff has been taken from MEC
and others have resigned and they have not been replaced we support those that need the social emotional aspect and have a background of severe trauma now if you vote to keep our school open and turn into a Dumping Ground of severe behaviors which is the newest rumor you're going to lose an incredible staff give the staff a choice of where they go next year no matter what the vote brings when we were reassigned months ago before the board meetings we did not get a St in our placements we were told where we were going so give us a choice next year at the high school there will be one special ed room and one janed room our kids are going to be segregated by disability instead of ability one Middle School room will start empty
even though there's middle school students that would benefit from the Mec program instead they're going to be struggling again and probably disrupting the learning of others we keep hearing about this low enrollment at MEC well with two years of covid most students were online and the behaviors were not an issue like when they were in person were there kids who would benefit from MEC then yeah there were the high school is out of control and the possibility of a mass Exodus is looming however students are not being sent to MEC why is that well rumor has it it was to keep our numbers low and make our building close and here we are tonight a few of the more significant issues at the high school are multiple fights a day a shooting in the school
parking lot pepper spray being released in the hallways and staff and students needing medical attention our Middle School had a student bring a loaded gun students were sent to MEC unofficially without paperwork this year did you know that to serve time in lisis suspension or expulsion referrals and behavior issues are supposedly down 51% how I will tell you how referrals aren't being written or they're not being entered things are not miraculously better the numbers are made to look good so people don't know how terrible things really are things have gotten so out of control lately I can't even begin please come to our buildings I've invited you many times this year I even invited Zoom meetings but no one took me up on it more students at MEC would substantially lower the operating cost per
student at least by 40,000 that's what y'all want right the money to be lower give us some more kids there are so many students at the middle school and high school that are struggling with trauma and having behavior issues that we could support plus the cost of Outsourcing students to other programs where they can be supported appropriately is a hefty cost unless they're going to be dumped back like the middle schoolers and they're just going to get thrown back to where they are maybe that's what's happening move kids to the high school next year will be more restrictive than it is now so imagine being in a building where everyone knows you're there and not being a part of the building our kids will have a different bus schedule bell schedule lunch and gym schedule
and be stuck in one room the rest of the day so now kids will do Plato every day except for English and PE math on Plato is terrible I'm The Playdoh teacher our special ed students will not be receiving individualized instruction but instead be doing math on a universal program that's even hard for our gened kids is that the same as everyone else no it's not and it's so much worse than having a separate School a community a safe space to experience their high school years with the guidance and support that is needed how will our kids get their social work Services when a social worker has 100 kids on her case load the word of the year is equity do you somehow find this to be Equitable if this was your child would you
want this for them or would you want better closing and relocating the alternative school and the multi- needs program it's a reason to be ashamed of yourselves these are kids that need the most support to be successful and they can and will be successful with that guidance so I ask you about next year how long is it actually going to take to build this Wing what about all these design flaws tiny classrooms and glass rooms and an alternative school what about loud noises coming from this manufacturing area disrupting our kids who are trying to learn has anything been thoroughly thought out and considered I don't think so have you talked to your teachers Have you listened to us where is our voice because frankly it matters most we are the ones in the trenches we
are the ones that the decisions impact and we are the ones that look at our kids every single day and the odds are already stacked against them thank you [Applause] uh next public comment is from Kristen uh Shreffler and topic is cmea [Applause] concerns good evening my name is Kristen trer and I'm a teacher at the middle school I wanted to attend tonight's meeting to speak on my firsthand experience with PBIS behavior issues and the need for intervention I was disheartened by Miss Riley's remarks about behaviors being the way they are because teachers are not teaching PBIS expectations I have been a member of the PBIS team at the middle school for the past four years and a data analyst for the past three for those not familiar with PBIS it has broken into tiers
and the tier one universal team is supposed to focus on the majority of students about 80% through teaching of expectations and celebrating those expectations as a member of the team I know the planning that goes into advisory lessons back to school lessons boot camp lessons PBIS challenges and celebrations while I am not in every teacher's classroom I do know that the expectations are being taught I know this through conversations had with staff from observing many of our students and inart from the data reports I prepare for the PBIS meetings while analyzing that data from the May report the Middle School numbers of referrals may seem high but if we break it down we see that 144 total students make up almost 70% of the referrals this means approximately 10 to 15% % of our student
body accounts for 70% of the referrals in our building if we break that down further we see that 70 students account for 48% of the referrals if we truly analyze those numbers it shows that the majority of students green level are doing what they are supposed to be doing and meeting those PBIS expectations while this seems like great news uh we have seen a massive uh Behavior issues this year unseen before I believe if we are using PBIS as the model for solving these Behavior concerns then we are looking at more of a yellow and red tier Focus the students with the repeated behaviors are not responding to the universal expectations and therefore need further interventions one such intervention is MEC while MEC may not have met the needs of all of those High referral
students there are definitely students on that list that would it would meet their needs and hopefully allow them to transition back into a universal setting this however is not an option for us any longer so where does that leave us as students behaviors continue to escalate we see more of the universal students slide into those yellow and red tears we continue to see educational time interrupted and we wonder why scores drop we see good teachers become frustrated and leave and lately we see fear we have good people in the district who love our students and want what is best I implore the board and other decision makers to take a hard look at what we need here we don't need less intervention we need more CH closing MEC is a disservice to students in our
district and putting another burden on already over tired staff thank you thank [Applause] you um next up for public comment is Marne niss on topic of safety [Applause] my name is Marty n I'm a p teacher here at the high school good evening to the administrators and to the school board members couple of months ago fellow colleague of mine and I were on our way out to our driver Zed cars with two students and we were shot at and my colleague was hit in the face with an air pellet gun could have hit him in the eye could have blinded him on April 12th another colleague and I were in the Fieldhouse and we walked through a mist of pepper spray to break up a girl's fight so on April 13th I filed a grievance
against against central office for safety in this District I've been in this District 19 years the last 18 and a half years I felt totally safe the last 3 four months I don't feel safe in this building at [Applause] all why I filed agreements is for the sa safety of every teacher teachers Aid substitute teacher nurses custodians food workers secretaries maintenance workers and especially every student who goes to cm201u that's why I filed the grievance we had a grievance meeting what came out of the meeting at the high school we've had 28 students who have been in multiple fights multiple the thing that shocked me the most was that we've had over 40,000 tardies so far this year 40,000 that's right 40,000 tardies at the High school that's from the beginning of the school year
till uh up to the date these are the tardy slips that the students get one student I won't mention name he's got 248 tardies so in this meeting the administrator that was running the meeting made it out that the teachers were at fault because we didn't call home I as a union rep in our building said I will take that teacher that gets called in and I want to rep why because in the bottom of the tardy slips these say intervention with Administration parent meeting and school intervention I've asked every one of these students and said when did you meet never met with an administrator I understand fully that the high school is down one and a half Deans I fully understand that the high school needs an attendance Dean that can address this I
fully believe that okay um in my 19 years here the last couple of months like I said I don't feel safe in the building um in a time where and I met with Dr koganes yesterday and she we had a great conversation in a time where the nation is in turmoil scrs are in turmoil why are we closing MEC when we need it more than ever now we need we need that support we have teachers that are this is my last year I'm leaving I didn't have to file grievance I don't have to be up here speaking for our teachers but I have no repercussions and I I commend the teachers that got up here today I'm not asking I'm begging I'm begging you and the majority of you know me because I've been on
committees with you I know you from insurance committee negotiations seeing you in the in the in the in the grocery store um I'm not asking I'm begging keep MEC open when did MEC change from a therapeutic school or from a tu a therapeutic school from a behavior school when a fellow colleague of mine taught there with me at the Sixth Grade Center when he was there we were just talking before we came in seven years ago it was a behavior school he remembers some of the fights and some of the situations so I'm begging you please keep MEC open and make cm201u the best school in the south suburbs thank [Applause] you uh next up is Teresa is it graen and topic is safety [Applause] good evening my name is Teresa graan and I have
been a teacher at the high school um in the math department for 5 years during my first year at cre I was extremely happy compared to the district that I last taught in sure we had our is issues high schoolers can be a handful but overall I felt we had a good handle on safety in that first year I had a fight between seniors in my room in which I was physically hurt once I was able to call security about the fight in my room it was a mere moment before two security guards and a Dean were at my door and were able to restrain and remove the students who were fighting my division leader then checked on me and covered my next class so that I could take care of the paperwork involved and
still have my lunch break it was obviously not an ideal situation but it was handled well and in a timely manner you may be wondering why I'm mentioning something something that happened 5 years ago let's fast forward to this school year one of the main struggles that we have noticed at the high school this at the high school is lack of security there have been multiple instances this school year where security was called and there was either no answer or security never showed up to the classroom as teachers we should not have to worry if we are going to be able to get a hold of security in an emergency situation such as a fight we were told that there was a shortage of security officers in the district and then started to notice security
officers in our building from an outside company at first I was thrilled to see that steps had been taken to fill the need to ensure that security was on site but after a few days that excitement faded because those other security officers were not the most helpful we often saw them simply standing in the hallways and not really moving from the spot they were standing even after the Bell had rung for the next class to start they wouldn't say anything to the students still in the hall or attempt to Usher them to class it was apparent that our security officers were still overworked and stretched thin because the other officers weren't pulling their weight we've had multiple days in which security officers were severely understaffed and we as teachers were asked to be even more
Vigilant in the Halls during passing period as a result students sought out the hallways with no security officers and teachers found themselves in the midst of student altercation since there were no other staff in the area to deescalate the situation lack of security in the building has put a large strain on teachers but more importantly has created a larger safety issue for everyone in the building the other main issue that I wanted to address tonight is the processing of referrals as a teacher when I write a student a referral for an infraction of a school rule that referral goes through Skyward to their Dean it is my understanding that the dean reviews it speaks with the student and issues a consequence we've noticed a huge delay in referral processing this year due to only having
two and a half Deans at the high school we know that our Deans are stretch thin however students need timely interventions in order for them to be effective I wrote a referral for a student for ditching class on January 28th and the referral was just processed yesterday May 16th speaking with many of my colleagues this has happened to many of us for referrals of all all types students are going weeks and sometimes months without consequences or interventions for their actions it's even more disheartening when that consequence is a phone call home considering it's an expectation placed on us as teachers that we make a call home when we write a referral this has led to an increase in discipline issues and a larger safety concern since the students aren't receiving the needed interventions is also
putting a larger strain on the teachers who are doing their absolute best to manage their classrooms personally I try to manage as much as I can within my classroom but when Behavior escalates I need to know that I can write a referral and that it will be dealt with in a timely manner with appropriate consequences during my first year in the district after being physically hurt from a student altercation I felt safer on a daily basis and still looked forward to the next day and the next school year this school year I'm genuinely concerned about the safety of my of the students myself and everyone else in the building I'm already anxious about next school year if we don't get a handle on this now as a former PBIS member and a huge supporter of
encouraging positive behavior I can confidently say that our PBIS lessons simply are not enough support and intervention for some of our students I know that this year is much different from 5 years ago I'm aware that we have students that re have really struggled with behavior since returning to the building full-time we need need a better system of interventions for these students in order for them to be successful and to keep everyone else safe for these reasons which are only the tip of the iceberg we urge you to vote no to closing MEC thank you thank you um next up is Ryan Simpson in the topic is safety [Applause] hello my name is Ryan Simpson and I'm currently a sophomore at cm and HS I've had a few things happen to me and close friends
I have had made me worried about my safety in the high school some examples including fights happening in the hallway that disrespects their learning environment when those fights occur occur it causes students to relate to class and have been times where other students almost get attacked because they're stuck in the chaotics even though the students that keep getting into fight keep come coming back to school I have seen kids videos of kids that are not involved in the fights that are being shoved by the security guards although the school has hired extra security guards it is not affected these guards are in the hallway but majority of the time they're on their phones talking playing games or anything on their phone there are some security guards that have bonds with their students and they block
out the bad things that are happening 2 feet away from from them the back the back checking is for our safety but why all of a sudden are they worried about our safety it seems like these efforts are a little too late in the school most of the students don't even know who the administrators even are administrators are barely seen in the hallway unless something terrible happens during the school day how are you supposed to feel safe when your principal and other administrators are walking into the building with us at 7:20 and are never presented in the hallway or classroom another attempt to help improve safety are the announced Hall sleeves although this helps with the movement in the hallways there are no real consequences for being slept students get put in a room their
names get ran down sent back to class with the past and parents are supposed to get called I personally have been verbally harassed by another student I informed my teacher what was going on and my teacher emailed administrator multiple times for assistance never received a a reply back the teacher even went down to speak to an administrator who said it would be look into but again nothing has been done when students that constantly cause behavior problems know that they can't get away with any punishment they continue to act out and each time it gets worse something must be done to deal with increasing students that are distru disrupting the learning environment for all the other students in the school thank you [Applause] uh we have one more public comment it was emailed in now um
I've received emails from many of you I appreciate the feedback and the input uh I have read all of them uh I see that there's a couple more that have come in since 5:00 since I've been here in this building so I've have not read those yet but this one was um specifically in the title said for public comment at the board meeting so I will read it um and this is from um n nicholet Schmidt um and uh don't just says public comment for board meeting uh good evening Dr Cara and Board of Education members my name is nicholet Schmidt and I've been one of the Middle School PE Health teachers for the past 11 years here at the U I am contacting you because I've been pushed to the boiling point mentally with
my career and changes need to occur changes that benefit our students for the better changes that will actually help them be successful humans to the current board members I've had the pleasure of teaching many of your children throughout the years I've worked here and I've I've had the pleasure of teaching many of your children throughout the years I have worked here and know that I was able to give your children the best education that I could as an educator unfortunately I am not sure that I can say the same as of late the reason our students have lost any sort of respect for anyone or anything in the building because they know that nothing is going to happen to them or their parents/guardians are going to come and save the day they know nothing will
happen to them and they aren't afraid there's no more fear and they simply do not care because there are no solid or consistent consequences we have children that need our help children that need an alternate place to better suit their needs yet we are closing MEC sounds like a solid plan let's close the place that are at risk students need to be successful that is our job as Educators to help students be successful but just keep taking away the Necessities for that to happen no student can be successful when when you aren't giving them what they need nor can the teachers be successful either we need MEC here are just a few few of my encounters of last week at the middle school today had to call uh for 911 to be called because my
co-teacher had a kid bust his head open on an electrical wiring metal box in the gym with blood everywhere while he was saying I don't want to die over and over again Wednesday we had a fight in the gym with one trying to stab another with a pencil Thursday a loaded gun yes a loaded gun plus being told to and I won't mention the word uh for doing a job that I need to calm down by a student because I told him who's an eighth grader he couldn't hit another student with a ball numerous times this is not my first second or third experience with being told what I should do by a student that is the next problem the communication relationship relationships between the central office and teachers is not there I'm tired of
being the one being blamed because I am the teacher not having the support I see friends have in other districts not pushing PB in the classroom please come visit the middle school and see the amazing PBIS stuff we've been taking place all the time all the lessons we go through and incentives all of our staff work on uh for them to be successful unfortunately Behavior start at home and in the community too not just the classroom with PBIS we as Educators can only do so much when more and more is being put on us including the blame how about some support and come to our buildings to see what is happening and how we are trying to trying but we are being failed as Educators the one thing I can say is that when Laura
hirs was here she always made herself present and did what she could to help us I wish I could say the same for the rest nikolet Schmidt uh well thank you all for being here and thank you for the feedback and input um that is the end of our public public comment and now we'll move on to administrative updates in closing out in closing out the year we just had uh two um items we wanted to share about some events that were going at the school uh the first one if I could have uh Heather godbout and Mark hok Conor are you here they're going to say just a few words um they've been doing some fabulous work with their students um they teach the africanamerican studies group and I know their students it was
the last day for seniors today but uh their students have been working on a fabulous magazine and I wanted them to just talk a little bit about that that really emphasizes student voice um okay I'll turn that over to you Miss tap it and see what I think it turned off I'm too sure okay now it's working thank you uh I'm Heather godbout um I'm here with my co- teer Marco Connor we both um are privileged to serve the students at our high school um this is the third year that we are teaching um the African-American history class that we created uh well four years ago I guess that would be um so this is the first year we've actually gotten to teach the course as we designed it because it's the first year that
we've had school regular school all year long um so we were glad to finally be able to hit that Milestone um the magazine that is being passed around to you is a literary magazine that our students create based on our study of the Harlem Renaissance um we start the year um with talking about issues of identity and diversity um and then go all the way from West African culture um before the slave trade began all the way through the present day in fact we just finished screening a film called just Mercy um which is about mass incarceration um and the death penalty it's a great film you should watch it um so as part of our study of the Harlem Renaissance we learn about the amazing art and music um and drama and thought and
writing that was created um by black writers and artists who left the South the Jim Crow South and traveled North to the northern industrial cities and to California in the west um in order to escape the terrorism and violence of the Jim Crow South um and to try to make a new way for the African-American community in the United States um as part of our study we learn about a literary magazine that was published um during that time period called fire which had some notable names such as Langston Hughes um who was a part of that and then we asked our students to take the themes from that time period and to update them for the current moment um and if if you've been paying attention to anything that's happening in the world the last
few years you know that there's an awful lot to say about racial Justice in the current Mo moment um and so what you have in front of you is our students original work they can create any kind of original work they want poems short stories essays uh photo spreads drawings illustrations paintings um basically anything that they um feel expresses their ideas about Pride empowerment um diversity inclusion Equity Justice um and that is what you have in front of you and we really hope to have students here to read some of their works for you tonight but it turns out that it's a really hard cell to get seniors to agree to come to a board meeting on their last day of school so unfortunately none of our fabulous students are here with us tonight but
they are here with us in spirit and they are always with us in spirit um we love this it is my maybe my favorite thing I've done in Education ever in 28 years um and we hope that you enjoy it so well thank you very much yeah I would just like to commend you I would like to commend you very Noble feet fe uh feet that you embarked upon very good I really appreciate from your students okay thank you so much they've really done an excellent job I certainly encourage you to take this home tonight and and do a quick read on it it's really well done and this is this is a I've seen several other magazines come through and I want to make sure that we highlighted it tonight wow great yes um
the second um uh special presentation to have um I've invited uh Mr Adam to come on behalf of Bel moral uh to talk a little bit about what they were doing uh with the students I had a chance to go out there and uh enjoy some lemonade the students read a book and they partnered they went out into the community and I'm going to steal your thunder a little bit but they went out into the community and found um a way to give back and so they contacted the president of uh Angels On Assignment she came out to the building she talked about um where the proceeds go she spent quite a bit of time with that and um they put this lemonade stand together so it was one of those hot days um so
we it was very successful so Mr adamy I'm going to let you fill in the pieces I so a little of it but well thank you so much Dr K you pretty much did it all for me so um Mrs Perez is our elll third through fifth grade teacher so she was working with our fourth grade elll Scholars they were reading a book The Lemonade War so they were inspired by the lemonade stand and they decided they wanted to do a lemonade stand they decided they wanted to give back so they start calculating the quantities of the prices and they created posters to publicize working on their math and their um marketing skills SKS and then we was was fortun to get um wall generously donated the supplies for our stand sem Mr Perez included
the rest of the third and fifth grade elll Scholars to run the lemonade stand Thursday May 12th my mar Scholars was able to purchase a cup of lemonade and a chocolate chip cookie so our Scholars like Mrs cogley said we um angels for assignments was the local charity that we wanted to work with um it it was it's a organization that experiences for people with families who are experiencing serious illnesses and our Scholars on one day they raised over $670 so our scholars in our school were so overwhelmed we looking to make this an annual thing most likely we going be doing an annual thing thank you thank you great thank you for sharing this evening okay next up under administrative updates teacher teaching and learning end of your update you guys here okay good
evening uh to our Board of Ed education Dr koganes to our students our staff our families and our communities on behalf of the office of teaching and learning we will be presenting our end of the year update um and and I brought with me this evening uh Debbie Caserio our literacy coach at Moni Teresa peterin our math specialist at Moni Elementary Lamont holfield our division leader at the High School for Math and CTE and Dr Sarah marer our coordinator of OTL and so we will be presenting data and information on our dashboard our strategic plan our committee work for Math and Ela our building Equity plans professional development Community Partnerships with Educators rising and our Orchestra program last week the Donovan group um when they took the information from the parent survey mention that parents
wanted to know more information about our dashboard and our strategic plan and I want to uh remind our families that this information is on the front page of the website and it lists the updates of what is happening at the schools and gives an opportunity for the district uh to show information uh this first page shows that we have 4,400 devices that have gone out that we have given out uh 4,000 o over 4,000 hours in professional development to our teachers and staff and then it gives information on data of course we have not taken the standardized test which is calculated into our report card um but that information will be uh updated and it gives information on the learning environment the other portion of the district website is the measurements and metrics of how
we are meeting the metrics on our plan on the Strategic plan and this is the breakdown for every percentage and where we are with those goals and so if um we give this report at the end of October at the board meeting for our academic update from the office of teaching and learning and then we give it in May and so if the board based on the information they came in for our families would like an update more often we can off we can offer uh to do an update three times a year instead of twice but on this page it shows for each of our goals uh where we are in the metric and measurement of Meeting those goals and now we will have our team come up for the math and Ela committee
update good evening tonight we're going to share an update on the curriculum committee work that has taken place this year starting with an update on the work of the joint math committee during the 2021 school year The Joint math committee completed the task of prioritizing all math standards kindergarten through grade 12 the prioritization process requires Educators to identify the standards that are most most impactful to student achievement identifying the priority standards was just the first step in addressing the Strategic plan goal of ensuring a vertically aligned curriculum I'm going to pass the mic over to Teresa peterin who will share out on the second phase of work that the joint math committee completed this year good evening my name is Teresa Petland the math specialist at mon Elementary I have been part of the math
prioritization work from the start of the process as Dr Mamer mentioned during the 2020 2021 school year The Joint math committee's task was to identify priority standards in math for grades K through 12 this year the task for the joint math committee was to unwrap the standards and create I can statements unwrapping standards help teachers have a clear view of a standard and create an agreement regarding specific learning targets overall we needed to find what each priority standard really means this un raffing process was to prepare the team for eventually creating Comm informative assessments so the team was broken down into grade level bands the steps the grade level bands took to unwrap the priority standards were if you look at the screen there's a priority standard at the top so we used the priority
standards to focus on keywords within the priority standard we looked at each standard and we found and circled the verbs what students should be able to do after instruction found and underlined the nouns what students should know found and highlighted the prepositional phrases how students are to perform the task next we mapped out each standard by filling in a chart based on the keywords also shown on the screen finally we analyze the target into level of rigor or complexity based on this information grade level band then created I can statements for each priority standard I can statements are student-friendly statements for the standards they are created to help students understand what the lesson is about and to help them understand what they are learning during the last two during the last two joint math committee
meetings we took a look at each priority standard and determined when each priority standard should be assessed can you flip the slide please thank you we created a viewer friendly table to map out an assessment schedule finally we took a look at each party standard and determined the best way to assess it paper pencil online platform or Project based are a few examples Lamont will now talk about the work that was done at the high school level thank you greetings and I'm happy to be here again at the high school level we also unwrap the standards using a similar process as K to 8 we wrote I can statements because at the high school level the standards are not comprehensible by most high schoolers so we rewrote the standards in student friendly language but we
still pay close attention to the complexity and the rigor that students will encounter as they move forth with sat act and most importantly college level mathematics one of the things that we realize at the high school level is that standards must be spiral throughout the year meaning if I'm an alge one and then I have this break with geometry I will be the first to admit that geometry relates to algebra but it's a task to get students to recall once they get to junior year to Algebra 2 all of the algebra 1 so we are also looking at how we can reverse The Ordering of the curriculum so that we have Algebra 1 Algebra 2 then geometry and it also matches what Happ happens with sat if you look at the SAT 70% of the
exam is algebra so we see that need uh We've also worked on a common formative assessment schedule and we're going to use Atlas and partners to add the assessments uh by semester and we're projecting that we will get through four units per semester because there are so many standards in mathematics at the high school level we are going for depth instead of breadth because sometime we try to teach everything and then students leave knowing nothing so we have to identify a few things that we're going to teach more in depth and we believe that we will see the growth and the development and conceptual understanding that we want our students to walk away with with we're very confident that the unpacking process will benefit high schoolers and we looked at we flipped it from 12th
grade and worked back to Cas so that we could build the model in a suitable way the only difference at 12th grade the way the standards are written they do not match the courses that we offer because we offer a statistics course AP C AB BC so we will be aligning to the College Board standards instead of Common Core for those courses simply because statistics in common core has been spread uh throughout algebra geometry and Algebra 2 so we we are excited about this work and we're looking forward to presenting further as we move along I've also been on the committee since the Inception and Barb belan and Jeff Noble as well as Tommy Connor has done a lot of the heavy lifting in getting us to where we are today thank you for your
[Applause] time phase three of this project will start this summer and we'll focus on creating short assessments of the priority standards these brief assessments called common formative assessments are administered by teachers to determine their students level proficiency of the priorities and will give teachers and teams ins into the best ways that they can support their students learning all of this work could not take place without the efforts of the joint math committee I'd like to thank the members of this committee for their dedication to the process [Applause] SL so I'd now like to share the work of the joint Ela committee this year the joint Ela committee took up the work of prioritizing the English language art standards I'm now going to pass the mic over to Debbie cerio who will share out on the
first first phase of that work good evening my name is Debbie cerio and I'm the Reading Coach at mon Elementary and I've been involved also with the English language art standards prioritization work since the beginning so I just want to give you a brief synopsis of the work that we've done so far and where we're going after after this work is complete so almost a year ago District reading coaches and teacher leaders began looking at nearly all of the ELA standards those standards include informational reading reading literature language foundational skills and speaking and listening this was the first pass our first look at the standards with our eyes on prioritization we've done a lot of work with standards through the years but this time we focused on prioritizing the standards it was a smaller group
made up of teachers from prek to 12 and we chose the standards that we felt were most vital to Student Learning based on our experiences as well as some of the as the the professional reading that we did so that was our first step several months passed and then our second look was broadened we brought in other voices around the table more teachers from a range of grade levels joined the work so that we could get more eyes on the project they looked at the initial decisions that were made by the smaller committee and they gave feedback some standards were prioritized some were given less importance so we listen to them more people with different levels of experience so that we can kind of make changes and and alter the work that we were doing
the final examination took place just in the last couple of months when the work was brought to the individual schools the members of the committee explained and summarized the work that we had done thus far and this was really a vital step in the process because the group that we brought it to the teachers they're doing the hard work they're in the thick of things doing the work on the a daily basis so each time the standards were reviewed and conversation took place and and it allowed the committee members to see things with fresh eyes and to look at standards in new and impactful ways the meetings that we held were richin conversation a lot of debating and talking and And discussing the standards and it allowed teachers to have an have a voice in
the matters that impact their day-to-day instruction and it was a great way to honor the teachers experience in their field so our work next will continue this summer and into the next school year as we move into phase two the the math committee is already done we're going to focus on unwrapping the standards that we prioritized and as a committee we'll also create I can statements that will use student friendly language and that will make the standards understandable and attainable to children so that they can achieve those standards thank [Applause] you so as Debbie stated phase two of this project will start this and again this work could not be completed without the hard work of our joint Ela committee and i' like to thank them for their efforts I'd also like to thank Lamont
Teresa and Debbie for presenting to you tonight thank you very much uh before we move on to the equity piece uh one of the things that I I like to often talk about is that we do have the beauty of being a prek program to grade 12 and being part of a unit district it gives us a great opportunity to align our curriculum and I'd like to thank again those committee members uh for working on that work um I will also uh take a moment to thank all of our teaching staff um all of our certified and non-certified staff because as we do go into buildings and as we are in classrooms uh teaching and learning is still still happening in spite of the challenges that we have so we thank everyone um for their
work that they bring um every day to the table as we go into our Equity um plan uh we have been on our own um cm201u District Equity work for about four and a half five years and with that work uh the state has now said that we will have on our Illinois report card um an Illinois equity Journey Continuum um that we will gauge our uh student achievement gaps and they we will be able to track that progress and so for the past year um I have been attending meetings and presentations on what we are to expect in the fall and what that work will look like uh we had started that work uh within the district and this year one of the goals is that that each building would build their own Equity
plan and work with their teams we have a district Equity committee which has about 50 members on it um and then those members and their building principles take that work to their individual teams uh we will post this presentation um on the district website but this is the information for the individual uh building Equity uh work in their plans and again this is part part of their uh School Improvement plans as well yes the entire presentation yes professional development on that first dashboard update we were able to say that we gave out about 4,000 hours of professional development uh one thing that has come out of the pandemic is that we have been able to do um a a lot more around professional development with virtual time uh as we come back into the 2223
school year uh we will do uh in-person learning and have a hybrid with virtual also but here again is the list of professional development that we were able to provide the staff this year finally um the office of teaching and learning had has uh been working with the high school and particularly uh Mr hollyfield and Mrs Joan Thompson for our educator Rising program this is our students who are going to have a pipeline into teaching um over the past probably month we have been working with students in this program and we are proud to say that we have hired five of them um the office of personnel and culture went over with me today and we have five students hired to be our summer Junior tutors and so they are coming straight from our program
and then our last partnership that we have been working with is our e Orchestra program um from my understanding it's been about 15 years since we've had Orchestra in the district um and so we have worked with principal cros Miss Carter um from Creek Methodist Church uh Cindy Westerman from the creek Women's Club Janet kuster from the symphony Youth Orchestra Mr grib at the high school myself and Dr Cara have met um in order to bring a string uh program back to the district we are starting this summer uh with an enrichment program at the Middle School uh and then we will look to the fall to developing the pro program to continue at the middle school as an after school program and uh possibly bringing over our fourth and fifth graders to start as
part of the phase and then building the program up until we have orchestra and string back at uh the entire across the entire District next month um usually we are able to give our academic report uh during this meeting this year it will be delayed to our June meeting because we're waiting on some of our assessment data to come in um as you know Illinois report cart was released three times this year we will present that information uh at the June report uh we also do an annual professional development needs assessment that will go out this Friday to our staff uh we will present the findings of that study and then uh we expect to have our special education audit findings and results come in from um our current audit that we're having needs assessment
that we're doing that concludes do we have any questions thank you and thank you again to all the presenters [Applause] thank you Mrs Perkins I wasn't on mic when I said Thank you before so um next up is the consent agenda hey before we get to that um under administrative updates we can usually talk about stuff right y so when can we I guess I don't know the best time to bring this up but listen I think everybody I think everybody understands there's a bunch of teachers here right and they're addressing they want to address a problem and I think for the last three months I think it's no secret that I've Beat to Death communication but at the same time discipline how do we ask our staff members to come to the buildings if
they don't feel safe so the other question I have for that is how does I if I heard one of the speakers okay I I understand that as long as you guys understand the seven of us you know we come here and some of us you know we have other jobs and we're doing the best we can but if I've heard it once I've heard it five times they've asked Administration to come in the rooms how do we make a plan to fix the problem if we can't see what it is [Applause] yes I mean [Applause] if I go to the six of us here how many emails do we get today with specific examples and then I mean the next thing we have to work on is discipline and I understand that this this
board we no different than this is a society problem right it it has happened after Co but there is no reason why cm201u cannot find a solution it's not going to be the end all solution but we can't find a happy medium to make it work so everybody feels safe it's not just our staff what about our students yeah we've had some incidences that are terrible and I'm just saying that we have to listen and I mean discipline I understand Senate Bill 100 handcuffs certain things but there are other ways that we have to make it safe because I don't know about the six of you but I don't want to be addressing an issue in the public on something that happens here I [Applause] don't I mean I know this is not the popular
conversation I'm having right now in in in certain in whatever light but if you ask a teacher what does their certificate say I got a certificate in teaching math I got a certificate in teaching uh language arts I got to teach uh certificate in teaching science okay we heard that teachers are frustrated they have this there's more responsibility but I will go back to it I'm a parent myself of a student in this District I had two before and one now what are we doing to get the parents involved in the students I mean I think Dr Hall said it best when you walk into the classroom the teacher sets the expectation but I still think that it's some point it has it has to be drawn from home and we have to help curve
that I mean Dr Hall was on the right he was on the right path with that that teachers you know have to set your expectations but at the end of the day it's the same thing with the cell phone policy we said that and that's great but if someone doesn't support the teachers and the people doing that what good is a policy I mean I'm sorry for talking so much but if we don't talk about it we're never going to get through this I mean I mean I'm telling you right now we in a 70% plus minority based District last year and a half ago when we had George Floyd we talked about it I sat down with Miss Mitchell who was in Dr Hall space we went had coffee we talked about it you
have to talk about the conversation we're never going to be able to fix it and right now what are the teachers asking for safety I mean think about it I mean look out there safety we're not even talking about uh and don't get me wrong we're not talking about other things that are important but safety is important I mean there's other issues but look it yeah I'm sorry but so Mr oh go ahead finish up I'm just letting you know that we are out of school in a week okay this is not October and they have to come in every day and Dread that every day it's we have a week we have to come up with a plan we have to be prepared and I'm telling you right now there's no way you're going
to be able to come up with a plan if you're not involved not meaning just you right your team so so let me kind of address that and certainly I want to thank our teachers for sharing I read as many of the emails that I could and I we are listening to what you're saying we're we're knowing that it was always tough anyway but I do think it has gotten tougher I think the last few months I mean we're hearing it we see we hear the phone calls we are hearing and having conversations with our our um our Administration do you know what's going on in the schools we may not be out there every single day but we are hearing that it has gotten a lot rougher for teachers we have been doing some
things behind the scenes to get ready for next year and I I was actually going to share that in my June board meeting some of the things that we're already working on um we have started a community uh mentoring program with the community folks out in the community because they want to have access to the families because they agree our families are not involved so they know the families they know the students we are working with them to help bring them into our schools so that our students see familiar faces so when there's perhaps some discipline issues they're seeing some friendly faces out in the community we are bringing them in we met um out at the middle school right after that that gun event that we had and teachers had said we are frightened
we brought our mentoring team out to that building I think that week to listen to teachers we had about three or four teachers that came and were able to come because it was short notice uh to come and share some of their concerns so we're not done with it though we're not done with it that was just the beginning because we are going to come back and next year I am going to help chair a safety and discipline committee at the buildings with the administration and with teachers because I want to hear from you what are you seeing what are the specifics because we're going to have to work on this together and you're going to have to share with me your suggestions so that we can move Administration in the building hey so so
hang on just a minute so understand that's that's the point so I'm going to use my job if I send my foreman out to run a job that's a million dollars and he's having issues I can't sit in my office and argue with him if I'm not on the job seeing what he [Applause] sees I my my point is Mr uh president alre read a letter uh a um public comment from the last person and had it had a swear word in it right and she was she was depicting a situation that happened to her how is someone in if there if everybody's asking for administration help how are they supposed to if they're not in that classroom or in the hallways hearing that to understand how that feels that's just I'm like I said
I'm sorry to keep talking like that but it's the only way it's going to get across is the disconnect I think Miss rup and I were were on a committee last year and and the one thing I said in it there's a disconnect between central office in the buildings there has to be a way to to bridge that guap and I think this is a good start for us for next year in in breaking down some of those barriers so we will I we need a plan in place before next year we we will have one we will have one yeah and I think it needs to start with MEC because I think a lot of the discussions we've had and decisions we've been making we've been making without all the knowledge and all the
information that we need it and we're and we're seeing that and I and I apologize because I I guess didn't I I didn't have a clear understanding of well I still don't have a clear understanding like like one of the public speakers said of when it changed why it changed and I really think we have to go back and kind of start over because a lot of things we've talked about a lot of decisions we've made have been based on inaccuracies so um I think we need to start there really and I I would I would also like to add to that we hear you I want you to know we hear you um it's been a frustration of mine as well with the Mec building um I think we have to have a more
definitive of what exactly MEC is what our qualifications um you know who gets to go there who doesn't we don't have a clear picture of all of that and that's something that I think we need to know and we should be packing the house as far as I'm concerned it shouldn't be getting the numbers down it should be with all these social emotional needs after the pandemic especially we need to get it filled up I would like to encourage board members to go to the buildings and most of you know me I'm out in the building whenever I get invited I go I talk to you I bring it back to Administration you don't need inv anytime well I do I do but the thing is that the board members need to see what is
going on in the classroom I'm appalled at some of the stuff I'm seeing in the younger grades we need to nip that in the bud somehow we've got to start at the bottom we're always at we're starting at the top we need to catch it and work with it before it gets to the top the little kids need the help just as much they they were they were bothered by Co just if not more because how do you teach a 5-year-old to learn on a computer with somebody they don't even know they've never even met the teacher so that was one of the things I heard loud and clear as you all know when you email me I do take it on to the superintendent the other issue is that we don't get all the
truth because the superintendent isn't getting it when things happen at your schools she has not given all the information and I know that to be a fact so many times we can't address things because what we're addressing is not what really took place so I encourage you to let your and administrators know that they need to be thorough with letting the upper Administration know what's going on because I know for a fact that that is not taking place all the time all our job and and I get it she knows that but you guys I I don't know if you get the information that they sign n or night like if you have an issue but somehow we have to connect we have to fix that connect also because that's another break in the chain
um and last but not least least we can't pick and choose who gets accountability pushed on them and who doesn't accountability is not across the board we're not I I know for a fact we're not dishing it out the exact same way and this young lady who said she filled out a a form on January 28th and it was just dealt with today that's unacceptable in my [Applause] book and I know the Deans are over worked we I mean unfortunately we we do know it and we're doing everything in our power to keep pushing Administration to fix these things as far as I know we're all going to continue to do that I think we have a pretty good solid board who is constantly saying the teachers aren't getting this or um Food Service needs
this what they've asked 10 times or work orders aren't getting fixed if if we don't know the top of the command here is this the superintendent if you're going up the chain and you have to get to the superintendent then we're going to know because she's going to let us know that somebody came to her and then we're going to get involved if we have to but we shouldn't have to and that's that's my key here is that unfortunately I believe that the board has had to be constantly involved because things are getting broken the chain is broken and I think that the seven of us are going to be working very hard to fix that chain and we need your help I'm sorry I can't hear you she said show with the unanimous vote
to expel the student oh well I can't I can't make somebody vote a certain way so okay EXC excuse me public comment is over okay so so can can I uh sure I'd like to say something uh fortunately I've and I say fortunate I've been able to be a classroom teacher a Dean a counselor and an administrator over discipline as well as over curriculum um and I I look at this and I understand where the teachers are coming from and I understand as well where administrators are coming from I feel bad for the Deans who may have gotten that received that referral and I understand when you have a stack of referrals and you have to prioritize so you may not get to a referral to late not not acceptable but that's kind of how
it is you have to prioritize and go with what you think is make a judgment call so get pushed to the back I U look at this and I and I you know that I I think that we should keep MEC open for at least a year at least because that's what it sounds like the staff is asking for and I believe that it's the best thing to do now I've heard heard two things one I've heard that the staff at MEC if they re start to receive troubled students then they they may not want to stay and and I hear the teachers at the at the the reg the buildings sorry for saying but regular buildings I don't know what else to say um that they may leave so either way there there can
be some trouble had um I think at the end of the day we're all here for students if we and if like Ross kuio said if you if you work from the heart you can't go wrong and that's what I hope that each one of us does when we look at this um I a lot of you know that I've had students go through I've had good and bad um I I must say my my children probably had their best time when they were at at the middle school um they they they did and that's not well everybody knows that me and Miss brag have had some issues but the one thing I can say about her is that she's always been consistent she's always been she never took anything out on my children never
she she was all my kids can't say anything bad about her I can't say that she did anything so that's what I would hope from everybody now you've heard my story about the high school um one teacher asked what would you do if that was your child basically was the question to paraphrase well I had to take my kid out because of the way she was being treated at the high school she didn't feel comfortable every day she was sick she didn't want to come she didn't want to be there blah all of this but when she transferred she loved it she was back to being herself so I I've SE so I say all of that to say if I'm looking at it from a personal standpoint you have heard me say that before
I would say give them what they have coming to but I don't feel that way I don't I really believe that we have to do what's best for our teachers so our teach can do what's best for our students I I remember working at Target when I was just fresh out of high school and they would always tell us the one in C City we may not have the best prices but if we treat our employees good they'll treat our customers good and our customers will want to come back and I just think that we we as we have said need to listen to what our staff is saying and do what's right by the staff they do and this trickles down for them to do what's right by the students um will will we
always give them will they always get what they want desire from us no but I think they're all adults and they understand that and but that doesn't mean that they shouldn't fight for what they want um with the complaint with it starts from the top yes it starts from the top um I've gotten to see Dr cin do a lot of good but for them the top is the building and and if they're not seeing their building Administration in the hall and supporting them then with that need now that comes from the top to go down where I think that they can work together they they really can um have if they and if they can't then we need to make changes at the top of the buildings uh that that's the way I see
it I but I I do know that I've had four children go through not completely through but I've had four children go through this District as some point in time and the teachers have served them well and I and I just hope that we can serve the teachers well so that they can continue to serve the students well now I do want to say this about those tardy slips yes I would you I I I'm being over over over um attendance we beg teachers to call home first yes and then sometimes with those slips it'll have each step this step that step this step and it just goes on to Hero goes on to just the next step regardless of if the teacher called home if what whatever but please please please your your contact
with the with the parents um is Al is a great step for hopefully deterring some of those issues but I I thank you all for coming out tonight I really do appreciate you all and we do hear you all because at the end of the day I am still proud even though I work in a different District I am still proud to see to see some of the great things that are coming out of cre school district 201u and it's not because of us as board members it's not because of Dr KAG it's not because of your building Administration but it definitely is because of you all working together collectively um and I I'll tell you the grass is not always greener and I definitely think that you all do a a a great job
overall so you can um that's that's what I have to say but we definitely want to the only thing last I want to say is if we don't support each other at each level it's never going to work it's not never going to work so board if if we could appreciate this discussion i' like to get kind of on the other side of the consent agenda and then I've got a thought an idea recommendation maybe how we move forward so yeah okay okay well if okay um for the consent agenda approval does any board member have an item they would like to take off for separate vote okay no hearing none uh can I get a motion to approve the consent agenda moved second any discussion or questions on the consent agenda roll call please
Brown is an i Dr Hall I Mrs galbert hi Mr swales I Mrs Walters I vice president rub I president Albert I motion carries okay next up is action reports and I think we all know what the first first item is under that is regarding the closure of Moy education center um I think we've heard a lot of good information tonight a lot of good input from the staff um what I would recommend is that we table this item until June and that because even well if even if we even if we voted to keep it open tonight there's a lot of contingency planning that has to be done to for that for that event and so see you can either table it indefinitely we can either table it indefinitely Or V be done with
take a vote and be done with it okay okay I think same emails we've heard pretty much from them the same thing we've got emails um we knew that we were going to vote tonight so hopefully everybody on this board did their previous work we took in what we heard today and we should be ready to go okay okay okay okay does any board member disagree with that that what I said thank you I think there's still a lot of questions I think there's a lot of questions um cuz we also had talked about the reasons we were going to close it and I don't mean closing it permanently because I obviously feel it's something we need and we need like I said we need to pack the house we need to get these kids
that need the help and are disruptive out of there and and put into an M MEC program but until I can have a clear I want to see it written down what is MEC who gets into MEC how is this all done and I need to know the solid plan moving forward of what MEC looks like in between you know in this transition period that's exactly what I'm talking about I need to know that to make because there's reasons we did vote to close it as well and I don't think we can ignore that but after hearing all of this and my own strong feelings about the Mec program and its necessity you know especially after Co like I said with the social emotional we need to not have five kids we need to have
a lot more kids attending but we have to be able to present a clear plan so that people are confident in that plan and there's not uncertainties so I don't feel comfortable myself voting for that reason it's not that I want to close MEC I need to know going forward what this looks like and that we're doing the best that we can for everybody and I want everyone to feel confident with our plan so I haven't heard that plan I haven't heard a definitive plan so for me that's why because I know we have reasons of closing we we have reasons for cloning I know we've been talking about it but we also talked about closing it at one time and we voted that I mean we we did say that so we have reason
ask all those questions and I totally get that and obviously we have a lot of passion this last couple days coming out and until I know I can't vote on something I don't know and I have not seen a solid plan because I can't tell you that it's going to be staffed appropriately to deal with the issues that that I can't vote that if it's not I have to know going forward on this vote the teachers have what they need that we have a plan in place a solid plan that they feel safe that they feel good with we have to have some type of great transition we cannot just and we could bring it back up in June and have that certainty we have enough time if we vote in June will we have
enough time and contractually do we have to give them a u um a schedule like a schedule before they go out yeah I think my my concern here is um you know delay sometimes delaying a vote either way if we keep it open I've got to get an administrative staff in there I got to go out and do interview we got to pull staff and we probably have to set um uh post more positions so we can't that take some time we can't really delay till June though if they have to know it'll be it'll be really rough right I not really rough but we'll it be against their contract to wait until June because won't they be out of school what do you mean out of contract because uh I go ahead I still
don't know what I'm doing next year I'm doing something at the high school not quite sure I haven't seen anything but I was supposed to get a list of what I'm doing two weeks before school gets out so I can make an decision on what I'm doing and that's what I mean like do we have that either way we would we will we'll have to figure it out so but it's easier for me to know up front [Applause] okay let go as as we have it on the agenda can I have a motion to approve the closing of Moy education center as a school let me start over can I have a motion to approve the closing of the Mooney education center as a school building in the creek Mone School District 201u effective at
the conclusion of the 20121 22 school year moved second any further discuss discuss required I I I do have a question so Dr cognise and your cabinet you said you have disseminated all the information necessary for the board to make a conscious decision on this is that correct I believe so and we have some board members that disagree with that is that what hearing that you don't have enough information to make a conscious deliberate my point was that the information that we had just doesn't seem to tell the whole picture and so what we were making a decision on doesn't seem to be what we were making a decision on and like the the Mec that we have is not what they're describ even as it stands now is not what they're describing and that's
my and that's my problem we would have to design a new MEC for next year that's exactly right so it's a therapeutic program not a discipline program like it was it would no longer but then Dr Hall asked a question last week who changed it from a discipline to a therapeutic and that's why I'm saying there's too many open ends to this you know is it is it discipline is it therapeutic is it just the verbiage I mean I don't know you know I think there's even teachers out there I've heard teachers say you know what if I have disruption and behavior issues I want to be able to send the kids so that I don't have the disruption then you talk to someone else and they said no it's therapeutic so I just feel
like we have a lot of open-ended you know unknowns because when I my kids were going through the school it was for behavior and at the time there was actually quite a few kids there then all of a sudden that number was decreased because there was um some board members that didn't like the idea they thought it was more of a like a discipline I never looked at it as a discipline I looked at it as a um restorative thing you know you're helping those kids you're putting them there for a reason to help them it's not a punishment but for some reason we were trying to lessen the numbers and I think we should increase the numbers because like I said we are dealing with a lot of social emotional needs and these teachers
are feeling unsafe they're being disrespected we need to do something yes and you know but I don't want I know we had reasons that we were you know trying to you know close the building and and it's not that we want to do it the program we actually want to provide that at the high school but there's just a lot of open you know for me to make a so so what I what I would say even with with MEC I I don't know how the program changed but I guess my question would be was it changed via policy or was it changed just via action because that that's that would be the question because if it wasn't changed if it was just changed be action then it shouldn't be a issue changing it to
what the policy says is there a policy I've never seen a policy is there I don't know I don't know so there is nothing there's nothing written there has to be something written that says the guidelines forc regardless of what happened in the past I think what's at the table is what do we do with MEC do we re keep it open and we we fully staff it over there and we start changing the criteria so that it opens up more and more students but that would just be for the one year because then we when we open up the new Wing it'll look different again speak well at that and I what you saying one of my things just to be clear is to make sure we're not violating the teacher's contract but two
making sure if we do keep it open that we put it um do it the correct way put it in writing create the policies for it and then transfer them over knowing that we're going to transfer them over and have a written policy or written guidelines at least written guidelines for like CSK because we have no idea like you said we have no idea teachers send recommendations and they're denied why and and that's not fair to the teach because they're that's exactly what you're asking I mean why well we would have to change the guidelines is what it is the existing guidelines would have to be changed how did it ever change how I don't know how when or who changed it the the criteria had been set by Administration do we have the criteria
written anywhere is there anything written that says I guess I just like there's such gray area with who's right who's accepted the again regardless of that I think moving forward we need to have them we would have them written and transparent so people could see them end of story yeah so so we got a motion on the floor yes and the motion is to approve the closure of approve the closure of of MEC wa the motion is to table it is that what you said no it's not to table it okay wasn't wasn't there discussion on the table was there ever a consensus right now we have a motion on the floor to approve the motion as written what's on the agenda that's the motion so the table wasn't involved in the discussion and we
went to that we haven't tabled anything we just going with what's on the agenda nson did say do we want to table it so that was no ever made a motion to table okay that's I'm just double checking that we're doing motion is to approve it as as it reads then the president asks is there any discussion and I asked a question and it still appears to me that Bor members is wavering I don't want to say wavering I don't want to say vacillating but there's some un there's I there's some unnown questions and answers out here and I heard from the audience and some of the board members here let's either make a decision to close it or keep it open and then figure out the rest yeah here's my fear my fear is
we keep it open and then we don't do what everybody wants it to do so then we are keeping it open going through all the Motions spending the money and it's not meeting the need so I need to know if I'm keeping it open that it's going to meet the need I don't want to just keep it open to keep it open it we need to know that what what we're keeping it open to do and that was something that we would have to hurry and come up with to decide what are we keeping it open for are we doing therapeutic Behavior we would we would have to figure that out okay I I have a question um and I I think that somebody mentioned that we have been um talking about this for months
and it seemed like if we've been talking about this for months that we wouldn't be saying table it to next month because we need to come up with a plan because we knew what the options were we knew that it was either keep it open and have a plan ready in place in case we or close it and already have a plan in place so I guess that that's my question is why don't we have a plan in place for if we vote to keep it open like why do we have well I think the plan is in place around closing it right I know but I'm saying why don't why why if we knew that this is coming up for a vote there was no plan in place for just in case the vote
fails that's that's my question turn up [Applause] Mr Brown who who first and who second yeah Bill Bill motion and Janine okay so we do have a motion on the table we do okay and it's been moved does any anyone want to amend the motion or go forward as it stands okay I I personally would like to amend a motion to postponing for if we have to have a special meeting I know we our public wants to niping in the butt tonight but from what I hear again as a board member I'm speaking personally and we're talking about some very serious issues here and it affects our students affects our staff it affects our financial position and much more and for all of the UN uh you know the unknowns here for us to make
a decision and it goes either way I don't think that's proved it's me for tonight so if we get you know if it takes a week for the board to really come together collaboratively some of us again board members already know what the direction they feel pretty good in their decision making tonight if it takes a week to have maybe a special board meeting just to talk about this issue you know get more information from our superintendent come up with Plan B so be it that's me so when that's the question so when would we have a special meeting cuz if we're going to do it I'm not I'm not I'm looking at when would we have this special meeting because there are answers for sure that we've been asking I mean we I I
think I brought up we need to make sure and are the students being taken care of it's no disrespect or no I'm not dis counting the staff but the idea of MEC is the students and what they need yeah so we need to figure out that's the key of what they need so can we handle that I mean that was the question on the table can the three rooms is that going to be enough I mean just think about it the middle school has its own issues that's just real I mean I mean I'm not going to sugarcoat anything we're having issues the high school and the middle school do we think that one room I mean realistically if more kids and again I'm not talking highly disciplined or whatever the rules are that we
can send kids there and we don't even know how that's established but I mean you're going to have to give us a date and then we need to know or you're going to get all your information together because at that point we we're making a decision correct I think what you're asking if you know I think more of the question is if we keep it open I think what that plan would look like and what that plan would keeping it open right now from what I know right now where to keep it open as is we talking about about five students right okay this this is this is just what's been conveyed about five students we're talking about we're talk just from a monetary point of view we're talking about five paper five students I'm
sorry on paper on paper okay no I'm just agreeing with you sure that's all like that's what what been given yes and communicated to the board and we're talking about again don't take this the wrong way but this these These are factual data that's been given to the board we're talking about it cost about 70 to $75,000 per student over at me to educate right roughly it depends on the number of students it depends yes that's what it was okay so and now if we keep that as right now right now the plan that's the plan right now as you see it if we decide to keep it open right now five students x amount of dollars to educate our kids and that's all we have been given so far and as our vice president
has said you know what about the other stuff that's why I'm saying there's just too many unknowns at this point for us to keep it open and I'm hearing my colleagues and the audience to close it so we had our last meeting last week committee as a whole and some of these same issues that was conveyed and talked about last week has been brought to the table today and I don't think we got any further so I guess I guess what I'd be looking for as a board member if we close it we I think we kind of know what the cost savings are we know what the impact is where the where the students would be how it' be staffed what we don't know is if we kept if we keep it open what's
its purpose how's it going to be staffed can we find the staff and what would that cost that's that's and that's what we need for one year for one year for one year just one year but those are those are big big questions can you get that information in that amount of time there's a lot of what ifs in the variable I can give you a hypothetical you know and again I I don't think we need hypotheticals or what if we need concrete answers well I need to know how many to staff for I yeah that's what we need um this is an ultimate Challenge and again I said this before that's why you make the big bucks that's why you make the big bucks so we need we need if we look to bring
this back to the table in a week you know with a special board meeting that's what I would recommend and give us those answers give us the plan B as dror Hall and vice president alluded to a plan B you know what's what is other than the four or five students and the X amount of dollars what else is it if you can't come up with anything I'm okay with that if that's it this is all I have right here this is plan a and this is Plan B but they synonymous somewhat yeah I mean that's that's for I mean that's that is the whole thing here you know even with our mission statement that our vice president always read out is is first and formost it's our students that's first and foremost thank you
it is and and and it's not just dollars and cents it's a balancing act you know it's a balancing act we need a definitely we need a direction yes okay so right now we still we still have yeah vot to vote to close so the question is can you get us the answers by next Monday or Tuesday or whatever day it is to see within there I mean I need to know like I said I can I can go back with the team and try to come up with um some hypotheticals of what a hypothetical building could look like in a couple months I think the motion if we chose not it has to be rescinded by the person who move the motion I think our so Mr Wallace you'd have to you'd have to
withdraw your I know I won't be here Monday so what can you call in huh you you said can I call did you um I could I'll be celebrating my son's graduation from Mr Brown let's just vote and we'll we'll play the cards where they they fall okay Mr zalles we'll we'll keep your motion on the table let's vote tonight okay okay so the motion on the table is to approve the closing of the Mooney education center as a school building in the in the creek Moone School District 2011 you affect at the conclusion of the 20 2021 2022 school year so an I vote is for closing a n vote will is for keeping it open okay okay is that is that clear to everyone so eyes is closed open okay Mr Brown roll
call all right Mrs Walters oh God million this my name the rookie you know okay make Clarity yay is keeping it open no I I I to close voting nay would keep it open yes well without a solid plan I'm going to have to go a well that make sure to keep it open that's without a solid plan moving forward I'm going to have to say nay because I don't have enough answers to close a building until with all of this going on I don't feel I have enough information I now in saying that I hope we follow through with uh increasing the numbers over there so that financially it also makes sense that we need we need to get kids over there that if we're going to keep this open we can't have five
kids nine kids whatever it is we have to utilize this building and get kids into it okay Dr Hall hey Mr swanes nay let me Mrs galri [Applause] nay Mr Brown I vice president rup nay president albre I motion fails 5-2 thank you thankk [Applause] so okay thank you okay uh next up under action reports can I have a motion to establish the date for the 2021 22 amended budget amended budget public hearing as June 14 2022 move moved second let's see any discussion yeah uh Janine moved bill seconded so any questions on establishing this date June 14th Mo are you ready for a roll call yes sir okay roll call please Brown is an i Mrs galbert I Mrs swales I Mrs Walter I Dr Hall I vice president rot I president Alber I
