order at 7 33 if we could all stand for the pledge of allegiance please i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all let's say you can call the role miss egan here miss fahey here miss marcus here mr pirati mr rubinich here miss calderon here miss skelton here mr stampone here miss rodriguez here okay uh notice of the march 1 2021 meeting of the board of education was emailed to the clerks of the boroughs of essex fells north caldwell and roseland and to the township of fairfield and to the editor of the progress on january 7th 2021 and the star ledger on the same day okay i'll be quick because i know

we have a couple presentations but i just want to start off again by acknowledging our amazing administration um administrators and our supervisors really always stepping up to the plate um they've been so proactive and have gone above and beyond and you know finding different ways to keep our schools going um even stepping into classrooms when teachers are teleworking so i really just you know wanted to say thank you again to their dedication uh to the students and you know making sure that we can continue our school year i also want to mention that starting this evening we will continue with our department supervisors giving their presentations so moving forward at each public board meeting we'll have the supervisors give their presentations and updates on their departments uh tonight we're starting with mr greg aschoff who

is our supervisor of mathematics and business uh at our next meeting on march 15th we will have kimberly westervelt who is our interim english supervisor april 14th we will have jason lerner who's our science supervisor then we move on to may with laura drago who is the social studies and world language supervisor and then on may 24th we'll have lisa sweinick who is our supervisor of the arts and then the last thing i just want to mention is that we will be moving our monday april 12 meeting uh to wednesday april 14th the meeting will be at the same time 7 30. we're moving it because um you know we're just coming off the spring break so we just figured we'd give it like an extra day or two to make sure that everyone gets

back into the grind of school um and that's it that's all i have uh damien you want to take over uh yeah thank you uh mary okay and right there thanks melissa um before i get into my report i do want to just mention that one of our most dedicated and long-time employees uh mr anthony mannella our athletic director he was injured in a motor vehicle accident on friday and uh he sustained a number of injuries but fortunately mr mannella was released from the hospital he's home he's recovering well he's received a tremendous outpouring of support from the west essex community so i just want to thank everyone in our community for the support that they've shown to him and we wish anthony a safe and speedy recovery um with that said uh i'm just

gonna get into my report here um as as you know uh the board we started our new cohorts on um february 1st for the middle school in high school we did uh run into some uh challenging weather early on um hopefully the the worst of that weather is behind us but we are often running with our um with our one cohort at the high school and our two cohorts at the middle school and i know the principals will touch on on how that's going a little bit in their reports uh later on um i just want to let the board know that beginning the week of march 8th we will start meeting with all of our reopening committees okay we're going to kind of check in um with our committees building operations distance learning kind

of see how that's going and believe it or not we're going to start our discussions and our pre-planning for market period four so what i would um tell the board is just be ready for uh middle of march um some different communication uh will be going out as we start to get some preliminary plans together for um marking period four spring recess is uh right around the corner friday april 2nd through sunday april 11th as mrs wadjuwicz mentioned this is just another reminder that we are moving that monday april 12th board of ed meeting to wednesday april 14th and we will make sure that our website is updated to uh reflect that change and just a reminder here just um as we are planning forward uh marking period four does begin on monday april 19th

okay unless you can go to the next slide okay just a little bit of covet information here um as you go as you know i do send out the weekly covet activity level reports in our northeast region which is uh which is essex bergen in hudson county we remain in the orange high risk category um however um the numbers are trending in the right direction okay each week uh the numbers are declining they are moving in the right direction and as of yet as of uh the last report four of the six new jersey regions are now in the yellow moderate risk category so um hopefully that that trend will continue and um we're looking forward to the northeast region hopefully moving into that moderate range as well definitely just want to clear up some

guidance this is the latest guidance from our local health department with regard to travel okay i know that um we have spring break coming up and some questions are are starting to come our way about about what is travel um and what does quarantine look like so right now as of as of march 1st okay um individuals who have tested positive for covid19 in the past three months and are recovered do not need to quarantine um individuals who do travel outside of our region are still required to quarantine for 14 days okay our health department is um holding us to the 14 days so we will follow their guidance and at the moment there's no um exemptions for anybody who's been vaccinated so if you've been vaccinated you're still uh required to quarantine for 14

days and then just one other item that i wanted to just remind our board of and anyone else who's listening is that we are still following six feet social distancing okay and the two um organizations that we follow the new jersey department of health and the centers for disease control are still um recommending six feet so all of our space instructional and non-instructional space we're still setting everything up in accordance with six feet social distancing and um that's all i have for my my report um but we will um switch gears now and we are a little bit right past the midpoint of the year and um mr gupta and i tonight are going to give the board an update on the progress we've made towards our district goals and uh just for the board

and for the public this presentation will be posted as we always do the following day on our district website okay so um i'm going to start off with this first slide here and one of our goals was to increase student growth and achievement with a focus on improving school climate and culture and just to kind of give you an update on some of the items that we've done this year and that are in motion as you know our high school participates in the sustainable jersey for schools program and one of the major components of that is working towards climate change so that that program is off and running this year our middle school dr dunleavy initiated a new multicultural club for students and she implemented a social justice committee for teachers also we had an

outside consultant come in this year um cheryl rosario from cgr consulting and she provided uh our entire faculty with diversity equity and inclusion training for the entire faculty early on in the school year and we do plan on working with ms ms rosario moving forward our case managers they connected with all students and parents within the first two weeks of school to build rapport and relationships our social emotional learning committee which is one of our reopening task force committees um they've met three times this year and have put together a variety of district-wide initiatives to address scl and um this month we have jenny mills coming in who will be training our all of our staff on effective strategies to promote health and wellness in themselves and their students unless you can go to the

next slide brian you're up yep thank you damian good evening everybody uh in continuing with the increasing student growth and achievement uh you know there are a lot of different places where we have different objectives on some of these you're going to see repeated because they do um help us achieve uh goals in multiple areas so if it's a little redone then i apologize ahead of time um just to date back i know it's been a while but if you recall we front loaded all of our pd this year we revised the school calendar so that we had four days of staff development to get our teachers practice ready to go in the classroom ready for hybrid we gave them mandatory training on screencastify goguardian and zoom all in preparation that we knew was coming

for the remote instruction we did a lot of uh we provide other pd opportunities so it's not just the focus on technology you know you see it every you know board meeting in the agenda you'll see professional development approved so we appreciate your support for all of these it's the only way really to help our staff including admin um learn and and think of the new ways to handle everything that's going on here without the pd days remaining for the year we've we had to be a little more creative we've had faculty meetings we've used apartment meetings plc time and as you know this has been an issue ongoing since back in march but a lot of that time recently has been dedicated to assessments it's been a topic of discussion among stakeholders and obviously

within our school district not only discussing what's working what's not working but actually developing effectiveness it's a challenge it's it's never going to be perfected um and we're constantly pushing to you teachers to use a variety of assessments it's not a one-stop shop it's not just okay let's do open internet every assessment it's using a variety of different assessments so we're going to continue to work on that and continue to improve in that area um and we've had joanna bacette do several workshops we talk about increasing growth and learning and sometimes we often forget the piece on sel or social emotional learning so we do make sure that that's factored in as well with our staff we've provided workshops on sel including topics like self-care trauma and coping and as damian mentioned we have a

upcoming mindfulness training workshop this coming monday actually the eighth and it's gonna provide teachers all staff actually tools to handle stress and anxiety not just for their students but also themselves if they're going to be good instructors they also have to be able to handle the stress and anxiety that we're all going through the next slide now so now we flip over to the students um again some of this is going to be review so i apologize in advance if you've heard this before but if you kind of rewind a bit one of our biggest goals this year for increasing student growth and achievement focus around the increase of accountability and support for our kids so um we went to synchronous instruction um we we put in the all classes meet wednesdays to help provide

support for our students and there's some you know some other things we added i'm not going to steal mr asheville's thunder he's going to talk a little bit about enrichment tutorials which we offer to our middle school students but some of the other things that were on the top of our list going into this school year how are we going to identify learning gaps how are we going to assess our kids what are we going to do for the kids that maybe didn't learn as much from march uh to june of last year so all teachers had to pre-assess their students all teachers and staff developed student growth objectives to measure students and how they're achieving as you know at the middle school we do map testing so we continue to do that and identify

learning gaps and the high school we we piloted a program called linkit so we used that in high school some high school math and ela courses those are diagnostic tests we gave it to the kids um to see where they were at and you know it basically measured their skills and we could see where are they ahead of schedule where are they behind schedule where they're lacking and again mr aschoff will talk specifically about lincoln in terms of math and the important part of that is basically analyzing the data testing them giving them diagnostic tests are one thing but if you don't look at the data to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the students then it's really just testing for this uh sake of testing and again last but not least when we talk

about student growth and learning we gotta factor in the social emotional piece so some things we've been doing and this is these are just very general as you hear the department presentations you'll hear more specific things that are going on but we offer presentations support for our students through a variety of different ways pe health classes they have focus on that dating back to last year our guidance and special services offices are constantly providing support for the students and of course we have a lot of sel activities that are just infused in classrooms whether it's brain breaks whether it's breathing exercises you know those things are are built into the classrooms and you're not going to see that in a formal program or presentation but our students get to experience that as well next one

i think i could get back over to you damien yeah so our second goal was promote the health and safety of our students and staff and part of that goal was upgrading our facilities to provide a safe and healthy environment and to be in line with all of our cdc and njdoe guidelines as the board knows we spent a lot of time in the summer preparing for this school year to try to make our facility as safe as possible equip it to the highest level that we could so you know within our buildings plastic barriers were installed in offices behind teachers desks case managers guidance counselors all of our instructional and non-instructional areas and common areas signage throughout the entire district to promote safe practices related to covid throughout your hallways again in all of

your instructional and non-instructional space entryways to buildings and all the common areas uh hand sanitizer dispensers throughout the entire district always common areas and everything within every classroom and office and then we um added the placement of temperature screening kiosks at our entry points to um our buildings okay go to the next time less continuing on the health and safety goal uh providing our students with staff students and staff with personal protective equipment also known as ppe um all of our employees were provided with face eye and hand protection we provided everybody with every um employee with two face coverings we provided each employee with one face shield which was an option for them to wear again with the plexiglas barriers installed in all classrooms and offices hand protection is available in every area for

both students and staff gloves again in all the instructional and non-instructional spaces and again with the hand sanitizer and all of the common areas and classrooms and you go to the next slide and then continuing again on goal number two with the health and safety of our students we did a lot of work preparing for the year to implement safety procedures for our students and staff and i'm just to name a few staff members students and visitors to the buildings must receive a temperature screening and they also have to complete a monthly screening questionnaire okay where they're screened for signs and symptoms and anybody within their household travel questions et cetera um our district has uh three school safety specialists on staff um which is great the department of ed only requires one we have

three and um they completed all their training and are current on all the updated guidance from the department of ed um we have uh still an obligation to conduct all of our mandatory screening and drilling and we um i believe our safety and security committee was given a briefing on that the other day some of our staff members completed a covid19 contact training tracing course nurses assistant principals and our school safety specialists and they've been working closely with our nurses to assist them in any way that they can uh throughout the school year we did start to um read in january we started uh cpr aed and first aid training courses we've taken the direction of the american red cross with following their enhanced safety precautions when we run those programs and they have limited

limited attendance but we are running those programs and then on consistent meetings with our local health officials okay not only our health official from north caldwell but we also meet with um the health department from west orange which covers essex fells and we meet with the health department from east hanover that covers roseland we also meet with the caldwell health department so when we have some of these meetings we try to make them regional now this way myself and um our for sending districts as well as caldwell since we all work together and we all seem uh share the same public health officers myself those officers and those superintendents we've had a lot of joint meetings over the last um several months and then going on to goal number three um this is a also

a really important goal on communication strengthening communication among stakeholders and one of the things as a district we wanted to do was improve communication within our school and within our in in throughout our community and um i think we've done a great job of that thus far um with our 64 member reopening task force that included stakeholders from every group multiple committees parents students um just a great way to improve our communication and improve our collaboration um since july we've had you know consistent uh reports presentations we've tried to keep the public as updated as we we um as much as we can full transparency from the from the onset of this school year with everything that we've done as a district we created a section on our website devoted to reopening and every bit

of communication that has gone out from the summer is posted on that website all of our letters our plans uh links resources etc all relating to reopening uh consistent email blasts um uh hopefully the members of the community you don't mind seeing that dean michochi at westex.org coming up all the time the days of the board meetings we try to send out a friendly reminder make it user friendly so we can put the zoom link there as we encourage members of our public to to come to our meetings um weekly newsletters from the principals to families and then all of the superintendent email blasts where we try to give you the up-to-date weekly covid reports um anything having to do with anything we try to keep the community updated weather communication uh text message email

social media phone website we've tried to take advantage of every every outlet that we can this way everybody can get all the proper messaging um all at all and make it as convenient as possible for for our community members and our stakeholders and ryan you're up continuing with our golden strength and communication that obviously factors into every aspect whether it's admin to staff schools to parents teacher to parents so you know here are some of the things we've tried to stress and we're always going to work on this like damian said transparency is key um as you recall we've sent out a lot of surveys we've surveyed the students the staff the parents asking for feedback we use that information for decision making uh some surveys you've gotten in the past about school climbing culture

we surveyed about distance learning and hybrid even genesis grade book bell schedules again transparency keeping you up to date in a timely fashion is what we're trying to do with all these methods of communication uh some other things we did that maybe you weren't not aware of especially if you weren't at the middle school the middle school didn't implement wellness calls several staff members including secretaries were making calls to families from april to may during the last school year when the closure happened and they did that again this september to october special education parents you may remember receiving a welcome letter from tanya simmons our director specifying who the case manager was going to be and going over any update updated uh logistics and procedures the case managers also connected with all the students and

parents right away to start the school year to build rapport and those important relationships that are much tougher to build now that we're uh virtual and administration we use google me zoom a lot of email communication um we meet with committee members that damian mentioned union members all the union representatives uh teachers predominantly use google classroom to communicate with the students but they also go with uh zoom uh they can meet individually they can communicate through goguardian provide input that way and of course emails as well that's a huge step from where we were last march when you might recall most for all of the communication was done by email and everything took a little bit longer to respond to so we're much happier using all these different forms that are much quicker and then

the staff to communicate with parents genesis portal of course email you may have set up video conferences phone conferences to speak with staff keeping that line of communication open you know again you don't have to wait to reach out to us if you need to communicate if there's any issues or concerns reach out directly to the teacher um supervisor you know whatever the chain of command might be for the particular incident but please please um don't hesitate to reach out to us next slide and then part of that communication is is using technology to make it more efficient and um one of those is you know we did a lot of training and again administrators were involved in this training too but it was all staffed on the different technology applications i hadn't learned zoom

before all this training that was just one of many applications that i've learned to use and get use of we created a staff the tech department created a staff service portal where we put all the information for our staff the how-to guys video tutorials troubleshooting quick fixes um anything you could possibly think of a pd library on all the different programs and apps that the teachers and staff use for a variety of different occasions and purposes we gave we went with the zoom pro licenses as you remember when we were being very careful with the safety and security of the information google forms we use a lot again those surveys that you may have seen um and you know access to the internet again we've handled those cases of anyone who's had trouble accessing the

internet have reached out to us and please continue to do so our tech department continuously is you know fixing replacing student chromebooks i'm providing loaners uh parents have come in to pick up loaners as needed and then just don't forget and anything and everything dealing with a tech issue whether it's wireless whether it's a microphone a zoom issue just email tech at westex.org and we'll get back to you as soon as we can with a fix we'll troubleshoot we'll give you a phone call whatever it is to work your way through it um but please don't hold on to that and and and just say oh it's not working and going on the route please reach out to our tech team and they work around the clock to make things happen in a quick way

so um i believe that is it before we uh move on to principles reports is um any questions from the board maybe about any of the goals or the information we just presented no okay and i'll kick it over to dr dunleavy who who has the middle school principles report thank you ryan good evening everyone i want to first start off by saying how wonderful it's been third marking period having two cohorts in you know coming into the building obviously we'd like to have all of our students but um we've had about 100 on average about 150 students each day which was pretty much what we expected it's been really nice more students in the classroom more rumbling and noise in the hallways um we've been playing some music in the hallways a little bit

too so it feels like we're gradually starting to get back to some normalcy so it's been it's been really nice and i've even had some teachers tell me you know god i forgot how much do i really love teaching because teaching in the virtual world is so different and that when you go back in the classroom with kids it's just you know they it's like they're reinvigorated and uh you know remember what their passion truly is so that's nice to hear um i would like to thank superintendent michoji for guiding us through this pandemic uh making difficult decisions always uh with our in mind and doing what's right by children um and i also want to give a shout out to my secretaries in the middle school working really hard um our unsung heroes so

thank you to them an update from our counseling department the scheduling season is officially underway at the middle school and we are welcoming our newest addition to the family the class of 2027 um which makes us all feel old back in january our counselors michelle lombardosi and carly davis visited each elementary school virtually and engaged in a q a session regarding the registration and scheduling process and along with our counselors the administration prepared a sixth grade parent night video that was sent out in lieu of our traditional evening uh the middle school's model this year has been let's roll with it and we you know made that commitment to the current sixth graders that regardless of what next year looks like looks like we will roll with it we'll make it a great year and

we'll make it the best that we can so if you'd like to see that presentation that's on the incoming seventh grade page of our website in multicultural news this year the middle school is utilizing our virtual morning announcements we have homeroom every every morning in the middle school we do it virtually view via a zoom call um so it's kind of a nice way to stay in touch with our kids and we've had our students kind of participating for various days to help us recognize and celebrate days the theory is that we we believe that kids will are more likely to listen to their peers than they are to adults so in january members of our student council gave a touching speech to celebrate holocaust remembrance day the students provided details and encouraged their classmates

to imagine what it would be like to have lived through such heinous crimes so that was a very touching speech by student council in february we in recognition of black history month i'm proud to report that our middle school clubs are actively engaged in conversations and activities on martin luther king jr day our multicultural club addressed the student body during our homeroom and provided personal thoughts on what the day meant to them each as individuals um and so that was read aloud complimenting them our save promise club provided a full week of daily quotes from dr king that were read aloud during homeroom and i want to thank all of our students who participated and to remind them to continue serving as role models to their peers and as i mentioned we've been playing some

music we've tried to play throughout february um blackmart celebrate black musicians and black artists and then going into march we're going to try and recognize um some women we've heard some alicia keys earlier um this morning we also want to let everyone know the barbara brushak hero assembly promotes social and emotional learning qualities such as character and empathy as part of our seventh grade health curriculum the class of 2026 that's our seventh graders they wrote letters of appreciation to their real-life heroes they're all obviously encouraged to share those letters with their loved ones or whoever it was that they wrote about and a select group of students were chosen to read their story aloud during this year's pre-recorded uh hero assembly additionally the health and pe department selected our school nurse denise logan she was

our honoree this year for her tireless efforts supporting all of us teachers students administrators through this unprecedented pandemic so that video was sent out earlier this morning and it's also posted as an announcement on our website if you'd like to view it and that's all for the middle school at this time i will turn it over to mr d libero thank you dr dunleavy hello everyone out there it looks like there's about a hundred people out there watching so hello to all of you i hope you're doing well uh first uh big congratulations we've identified our valedictorian and salutatorian jonah finkelstein and morgan cindell both great kids um and i will say in order to achieve at that level that the valedictorian and salutatorian achieve that you need to be motivated by a little bit

more than just wanting to get good grades and a little healthy competition with your friends you really need to foster a love of learning and education in all its forms so congratulations to jonah and morgan just like i said great kids both very humble we will also um have our shoprite stars for third marking period and again we have morgan sindel there for academics for athletics alexandra jesus for the arts george ashey for leadership briana poro and for service to the community we have sam prince we also have a few student athletes who have already committed to be uh to play in colleges chris bell is going to play football at montclair state university and his teammate jake cusano is also going to play uh football at montclair state university and we also have abby

lonergan who is going to play soccer at bloomfield college in new jersey uh next slide please meliss [Music] so we have been on our one cohort our single cohort uh for the past few weeks now uh and to echo some of the sentiments of dr dunleavy the hallways are lively again it feels like school we actually even have a few students that are leaving class to roam the hallways um which is kind of one of those things you didn't really think that you'd miss but then you see them out the room you really missed it um i know a few people out there were uh concerned about our satellite rooms and what those would look like but the number of people that the satellite rooms are where we send the overages you know if the

rooms have exceeded capacity um we're really we're getting between 15 and 40 a day combined that's all from all the blocks we're really only getting between 15 and 40 and each room only has about three to six students in it each period so the library will have three to six and the black cafeteria would also have three to six we have also used them sometimes as a a holding place if a teacher is absent where they can't really be in the classroom like like the wood shop um we we don't uh permit students in the wood shop if the teachers out so it would just be a holding location for them um so i i am very excited about our one cohort and again to even to echo the sentiments of dr dunleavy a little

further i do want to say it just feels really great to be part of a district where we can get it done and we can open for in person and stay open with some consistency and it's really to the credit of the the entire community uh the board for all their support the teachers uh the parents of course for trusting that that we're doing the right thing and of course the kids that come in and they do the right thing when when they're in the buildings always wearing masks so i just want to thank the whole community because it feels really good to be part of a district like that um junior junior prom and senior bowl uh i know that people were concerned about this this is information that went out friday i'm actually

just going to read a little bit of what went out friday because i think it was uh pretty clear and and concise uh so administration is committed to safely providing the closest semblance to traditional events such as junior prom and senior brawl i understand that students and parents are anxious about details for these events so they can plan accordingly for entire appointments etcetera however we cannot provide all details at this time as of friday we have made some adjustments to the event dates and we will continue to update students and parents as soon as information becomes available here's a little background information that i'm sure everybody is very familiar with the state of new jersey currently mandates that the maximum capacity of any indoor gathering shall be no larger than 150 individuals if junior prom

were held within the upcoming few weeks only half of the junior class would be able to attend covent 19 cases are decreasing and restrictions are loosening however it seems unlikely that an event that includes the entire junior class would be possible on the originally scheduled date prom date of april 22nd weather is also unpredictable which limits outdoor options senior bowl is scheduled for june 16th there is reason to be optimistic that events scheduled for june will be able to accommodate the intended invitees however despite all safety precautions there is still a possibility that a student at senior ball could test positive for covet 19 shortly thereafter if that were the case it would be just about impossible to contact trace see a senior bowl and the entire class would risk being quarantined through our scheduled

graduation date of june 22nd which would just be an absolutely devastating end to what's already been a challenging year so for those two reasons the dates for both events have been adjusted senior bowl originally scheduled for wednesday june 16th has been rescheduled to tuesday june 1st this greatly reduces the risk of a school event it for seniors causing unintended consequences junior prom originally scheduled for thursday april 22nd has been rescheduled to wednesday june 16. okay so junior prom is taking the senior ball date restrictions on gatherings at the time will determine the size of the guest list the priority attendees are the juniors if restrictions allow the guest list will be opened for juniors to invite dates from other grades at west essex high school if restrictions allow further the guest list may be open

for juniors to invite dates who attend other high schools but these details will not be available until after restrictions on gatherings have changed students who are under quarantine will not be permitted to attend any school events if restrictions allow and seniors are invited to attend the prom those seniors will risk quarantining during graduation if something were to unfortunately uh if someone were to test positive at shortly after prop both events are scheduled at the legacy castle in pompton plains the capacity at the legacy castle is enormous and even at 35 capacity the facility can accommodate most events the 150 maximum number is the prohibitive variable and that is the number we hope will change we will consider outdoor options if they are less restrictive and details about the dance floor and food service will not

be determined until we can make better informed decisions but i am very very optimistic that that in june we will be able to have these events um and like i said we will put publish the details as soon as they become available but um i think uh most uh the people that i spoke to uh including uh class advisors and and class officers are optimistic that that these events really can happen in june and so that's it for me hey mary i'd just like to thank the high school administration mr d liberto the advisers for for putting their heads together and trying to be proactive here and doing their very best to try to make these events happen and and i do think june is is um a much better um alternative for us you

know um further into the year and more likelihood that that they can run and you know instead of taking the path of least resistance and just waiting it out i'm really happy to see that we're going to really try to make these events happen so i agree that's why i was thanking uh the administration ahead of time i didn't want to steal caesar's thunder um and i that's why i'm saying you know being proactive and things so yeah i you know we can't thank you enough for looking forward and taking all that into consideration so doing a great job thank you absolutely my pleasure [Music] okay um awesome okay good evening everybody oh very great um everybody can hear me okay i don't have my little green square but i think i'm okay perfect uh

so i um i i suppose the math and business department presentation is going to be a little anticlimactic after the prom presentation i didn't realize that was the act i had to follow but i'll do my best to to keep you riveted tonight and give you a little bit of information about what our department's been uh been up to before we um get into some of the details uh if we want to go to our next slide you can see it's very tough for all of us to get together but we were able to jump on zoom and take some pictures to say hello to everybody so we have a couple of repeats here we have a holiday picture and then another these are not all of our teachers but a good amount from our

high school and then on the next slide you'll see also uh we have our team at the middle school uh if i if i may say i think that the west essex math and business department um has some of the best teachers at the school and and i'm really proud to be working with a really dedicated group of professionals that uh that that have done i think very well uh in general and especially this year under the circumstances that have come up uh and then a couple of changes that i also want to tell you about uh which are on the next slide as well miss karen hudson has just joined us at the uh middle school computer science um position uh she replaces mr david samaya uh mr david smaya is still with us

fortunately he's gone down to the high school and uh he is replacing um ms emery uh and i'll be talking a little bit about her later um you know but basically he's got a couple of moves in there so you may have uh you may have the opportunity to meet those two new teachers through your children's schedules uh and we're very pleased to see them in their new roles and we wish them a lot of luck and great success in those positions so the the three goals that i wanted to to talk about uh tonight um relate to the district goals that um mr gupta and mr michochi already discussed and also some individual department goals that were that were set at the beginning of this year based on the uh the environment that we

were going to be teaching in uh so obviously we want to increase student growth and achievement as a district and we've been looking at that um as a department through that lens and then in our math department we're we're attempting to use as much as we can uh data to drive our instruction and also to try to use as many authentic assessments in real world applications both in our coursework and um and in our formative and summative assessments as we go forward [Music] uh i would go to the next slide if you don't mind thank you so uh to increase um student growth and achievement uh the the first uh point of note actually started last year confusing to this year our seventh grade people evolve with a special focus on our math 71 program

uh we are uh incorporating uh new material from a program called open up resources uh whose goal is to prepare students and give them a very abstract and critical thinking approach to to algebra so that our students who take math 71 and move into algebra in their eighth grade year are prepared and that's been uh a big priority and something that that we want to set our students up for success as a very quick plug in a circle back to uh what mr gilberto said earlier uh our two uh valedictorians and salutatorians have both taken calculus they are both taking calculus three and if i think back i believe five out of seven years or six out of seven years uh one or both of those students were in that class so it is uh

i don't know if it's a you know the cause effect relationship there but i definitely want to see as many students as we can be prepared for that course and part of that journey really does start uh in seventh grade and sort of building that foundation uh additionally in uh our our seventh grade as well we've introduced a new course called academic foundations this is a new um approach that we're taking for our students who struggle in mathematics so uh it traditionally or in the past we've used a leveling technique and um heterogeneous sorry homogeneous grouping um which has been shown in some cases to not be as effective we've moved to a more heterogeneous approach not just in mathematics but in the majority of our middle school subjects over the past year and uh

in our math program specifically we offer a course now for students who struggle called academic foundations and mathematics uh and and that course so far has been a great way uh for students to work in small group instruction uh you know in some cases three on one two on one four on one with uh with a with one of our certified math instructors uh to develop first a great relationship with a with a really dynamic teacher uh and second hopefully an ability to work with the mathematics they're struggling with in a smaller environment and get that attention they need uh it is hard to say obviously and evaluate the the strength of the program at this point because of the other variables but we're hopeful uh going forward that uh it yields kind of the

benefits that we're that we're predicting uh and that our goal of the program was uh additionally we've also done some uh professional development for our teachers in hybrid and online learning uh we are definitely an interesting spot not many schools uh or not many uh pd offerings uh existed prior to this year and it is hard to tell who's who's kind of uh you know got good quality and and who is just trying to throw something together so our teachers have been taking advantage of programs uh when they're able to uh some have had uh some really great interactions uh and have brought that back to their classroom so we you know continue to empower our teachers to do that and encourage them to find programs and and professional development that that yields those kinds

of results um in school year 1920 um i think i'm just mentioning this because we didn't have our presentation last year we were also able to host a middle school round table uh where several neighboring districts came together uh and we had an opportunity for the middle school teachers to meet with some of their colleagues at other schools uh and talk about some of the difficulties and trials and that in some ways actually gave us a little bit of a leg up on our distance learning approach because many of the discussions were focused around online programming which we ended up adopting in in in different ways as we transitioned uh into our our remote learning uh and lastly uh in terms of student growth and achievement our third uh mathematical national honor society inauguration happened

this school year uh the the that program continues to grow when we think it's a great opportunity for uh students who are gifted into mathematics and who have worked very hard in their courses uh to be recognized and honored for her for that um and you know and so it's a positive program and we are looking forward to seeing that continue on the uh the next slide um mr groups already mentioned that we've used uh linkit and map testing um to sort of get a baseline for where our students are at the data is uh is is telling for us for sure there's definitely opportunities for growth this has been a hard year um without having a broader look at how other schools in in our state in our district factor group have done it's

hard to pinpoint for sure exactly where we are in the continuum i would like to think that we're doing as good of a job as we can under the circumstances and i think that we've we've brought in innovative teaching strategies our teachers have worked very hard to to try to iron out as much of the uh difficulty uh as we can it this has been a challenge and i think anybody uh everybody knows that it's very hard to learn from home and it's very hard to learn when your teacher is not next to you encouraging you to work and um and stay motivated that being said uh our you know the data that we have and the data that we'll use will continue to inform us um and and we do use our year by

year comparisons as well be through the gradebook and also through the performance of the students on some of these standardized tests to sort of keep an eye on our performance and then use that to guide our decision making and then we continue to do that uh and it's been valuable um on that topic of comparison because we do have uh you know a little bit of difficulty finding out where we're all at uh i personally have been attending uh interstate supervisor meetings um with uh with districts in our district factor group it's a great opportunity for us to talk about the challenges that we're facing and i've gained a lot of insight into what some of the other schools um have been facing and and sort of ways they've been addressing it uh the good

news uh to our board uh is that our challenges are similar uh that that generally speaking we we have uh we have very similar experiences to those schools in the district factor groups that we uh that we sort of compete with and i don't mind you know don't want to make it a competition but uh but the um you know we're in the same boat and we're also here to support each other so so we have a very positive collegial um uh respect for one another and and that kind of opportunity and conversations can i think help all of our departments both here and in the other schools that i work with uh continue to grow and that's a good thing i'm also proud to announce that the year before and again only mentioning it

because we didn't have an opportunity to talk about it last year uh we were actually the host of one of the northern new jersey supervisor in person meetings uh it was attended by over 30 districts across new jersey um actually uh mr michochi saw his math teacher there which was especially exciting um from when he was in school so it was it was a neat opportunity to to have that group of professionals with us and i think also feather in our cap because i can confidently say having attended these other meetings that our campus is one of the most beautiful campuses and so i i personally have a lot of pride when i get to invite people and to show it off because i think we do a great job of of having a really

great place to work and to uh and to teach our students and last but not least in the data to drive instruction category uh we have an end-of-year assessment of some sort uh i i actually i may be in the minority on this but i actually hope that we have an njsla this year because i think it will give us the opportunity to to have a benchmark of how we're doing compared to uh our peers that being said uh if it is the case that new jersey does waive the requirement and at this point there is no decision one way or another um and in fact technically the decision is that they are giving the test uh so at this point if that is the case we'll be uh we'll be will be proceeding with

that test if that test does get cancelled for some reason or change uh then my hope you know in our department is to provide some sort of benchmark assessment for ourselves so that we can have some kind of internal measurement and use that to guide our future decision making um our last goal that i'll talk about uh we can go to the next slide if you don't mind melissa oh perfect uh is some authentic assessment application so uh in computer science we actually have two new courses that launched this year uh they've only been running for about uh about a month and a half now but um i understand that they are actually just a month uh but i i'm excited to to hear about them more as they continue to progress uh animation and

game design and cyber security having these two focus courses in the program i think will help give students a huge leg up especially if they have an interest in this as a career uh because it's exposure that many schools don't offer additionally in computer science i didn't put on the slide but i thought about it actually while the presentations were going on last year we offered the fbi teen academy which was a focused program in um basically law enforcement's relationship with computer science uh we had uh i believe somewhere around 30 to 40 attendees and it was uh extremely interesting uh they actually brought a a dog that could sniff out uh electronic parts including usb drives and uh computer hard drives uh and the dog was able to find in our school library three

different usbs that they had hidden uh prior to the presentation and it was like remarkable uh how you know how you know obviously that i wouldn't call that technology necessarily but how you know law enforcement is using uh state-of-the-art um approaches to um addressing things and for our students to see that i think can be really inspiring for any of them who are interested uh in that sort of career field or just in general uh we have been using many pbas open-ended projects and questions and creative assessments that has been especially our focal point i know that um it is hard in math especially to give assessments that are that are not just copy and pasted sort of things um especially with all of the online access that students have now to different apps their

computers etc etc and we also want to try to balance the book as much as we can between students who are virtual only and students who are going to be in school especially at one cohort in our high school it's a challenge that we continue to work at and i think each of our courses depending on on what they're teaching has different levels of success with this and i know it is certainly a point of contention for for many probably parents at home and it's something that we're very cognizant of and continue to grow from and we appreciate your feedback as well as we develop because i know that that is an area that we continue to grow and improve um in the business universe we have um some new courses that have been overhauled

and updated to reflect a little bit more of our modern times our virtual enterprise course focuses on e-commerce and our students there are working together to develop an e-commerce site our digital marketing and social media course has a little bit more focus on some of the digital aspects of marketing uh my wife actually just got a job in social media marketing so there are lots of careers out there and it's something that is an exciting field that is continuing to develop so giving our students an opportunity to see that is is exciting uh and uh and the introduction of business and business applications course was new this year and we're going to continue to develop that um but basically use that as a tool to sort of greet some of our freshmen and sophomore students

who haven't taken a business course into the into the program and hopefully get them to take more and more with us because that is one of our goals is obviously to continue growing the program um in our extracurricular universe uh our math counts in our middle school one of our students qualified to advance the chapter invitational which is very impressive we wish her a lot of luck uh in the math league actually i believe the chapter invitation already happened so i'll have to find out what the results were but hopefully it won't go far uh our math league competitions are ongoing and in our business um uh extracurricular activities the fbla had 12 students advanced to our state competition which is our highest group i think that we've had in many years so that's very

impressive and our deca regional competitions just concluded uh and so the results i believe came out uh either later today or will probably come out early tomorrow so we'll be getting some information there typically we do uh are able to send several students to the state competition and i'm hopeful we'll be able to continue that tradition um we go to our next slide so i wanted to share just a little bit of some student work talking about the assessments and you can see our teachers have been focusing on creativity i have two geometry assignments here uh one on the left uh demonstrates some graphing that the students have been doing and then applying some of their knowledge and the reason why i chose the one on the right uh was because what stood out to

me about this one was not only did they use a computer program to write their answers in which i think is a skill that can be really valuable to our students learning how to use different means of communication and especially things that may be you know more easy to hand write but um but but can be designed on the computer they also typed out their thinking which is a huge skill in the njsla and uh and one of the uh the one of the areas that that that our district and other districts do have a little bit of difficulty on some of those open-ended questions and so to actually increase the the amount with which we kind of expect them to do this i think is a positive overall and i hope we continue to

use projects like this and some of the teachers that have been giving these have said that this is great and that they do want to continue having them even as we return to a more traditional setting uh in the next slide you'll also see that in our precalculus course that we're still able to maintain um you know rigor in in our courses uh the students again on the right that was an example of some student work there using computer programming that the students are figuring out and learning on their own to submit their work uh and so the the the assignments can still be challenging and the assignments can still ask a lot of our students while at the same time being creative um and i want to continue that tradition i think we've done

a good job so far uh i'd like to take a moment as well to talk about uh some some former graduates and and kind of allowed them so a couple of snapshots of success we'll call them i actually uh happen to look at the participant list i think the entire feldstein family is here tonight so uh so thank you guys for uh for coming to to look in uh this is miles he graduated in 2019 and some of you board members may recall that he actually did an independent study presentation with mr carchetta on app development um so miles uh who is a student uh i'm like 90 sure at syracuse university um uh actually uh started a company called other side ai which is um an innovative tool to help uh professionals uh and

i imagine lay people as well to write emails um i'm very excited about actually so if you're looking for uh investors let me know um but uh my my a lot of my money's signed up in gamestop right now but uh but if um but uh but yeah so miles uh and his partners were able to raise a substantial sum of money uh from some uh some investors already uh and his success story you can google other side ai is is very impressive i don't want to put them on the spot now but he's really a a great example of sort of what our students can be capable of uh when they carry their um their knowledge with them and move on uh and so we wish him a tremendous success and a lot of

luck on this venture um the experience itself whatever the outcome is going to be incredible i'm sure and uh and for him it's great to see that another student who we're particularly proud of uh that i'm i actually had in calculus 3 and um is is amanda garafallo she has recently graduated mit but uh was uh part of the mit 2s009 final project uh in which she designed and launched a final project i did look at the website but i think because of covid they haven't updated with the 2020 submissions i can only find the 2019s so i don't know exactly what it was that she you can see with the masks it's recent that's how i knew i had the right picture but uh i don't know exactly what it was that she had

presented but i do know that um you know it was an application involving computer science and mathematics and so it's great to see another one of our uh students kind of take their knowledge with them and continue uh the last slide in my presentation uh is as a fun farewell to janice emring who i mentioned earlier janice emery has taught with uh west essex uh school district for 40 years uh she retired this january uh after a very long and storied career she she has been an incredible asset to our business department uh whether it was the first day she started working i i wasn't uh even alive uh or whether it was uh the um the last day of her her time with us her enthusiasm and love of learning teaching and and being

with students uh was unmatched uh we were very very fortunate that even with social distancing we were able to give her a really great send off the end of the day uh complete with a full staff clap out for our math and business department and i don't imagine she's listening tonight because i'm sure uh she's got better things to do on a monday night in her retirement but uh i think it's it's great that she was with us for so long and we appreciate uh her her hard work and we wish her a a great retirement and a well-deserved rest after a great career so thank you very much for listening thank you mr aschoff for that presentation um okay are there any um comments uh from the board members on any of the couple

presentations that they've heard mary this is debbie yes i just want to say to uh greg i it was a wonderful presentation thank you and i know it's difficult during these times to go do a presentation without being in person but i also want to just say that and these students that you highlighted at the end um i think that's a wonderful little segue into something that maybe all the departments can do going forward is to you know i know we all have our hands full but just to every once in a while if we know of a student you know in the past who has graduated and um who's bringing so much more out there to the public that it's something that we could highlight going forward great idea yeah thank you yeah that's

a great idea we'll move forward um okay are there any other board members do you have any comments this is tony i'd like to comment unless someone else has is ahead of your head tony so um thank you i i came here um looking forward to the meeting one of the things i was really interested in hearing about i'm so glad it was it was discussed because i don't have any visibility beforehand was about student academic progress and performance and progress where we are and i'm thinking there must be data that's available and i was so glad to hear that both ryan and even and greg they remarked about the baseline effectively baseline performance tests and data student growth objectives i think i think it's important after last year and knowing what where the where

the students are it's tough enough these seniors are having almost a whole year out of school right but behind them the students where they are where they should be and what where they need to be and i just think that it's that proactive effort is important for west for all schools but i'm so glad that west essex is has that on the on the um as part of the plan to assess that so i want to thank you as i was looking forward to seeing if that was coming up or if not i was going to ask questions and i heard that that's part of the plan so thank you all right anyone else okay um are there any board committee reports oh i'm sorry go go ahead dad and and go ahead you can

go first with policy okay are you sure you go you go okay fine okay so we had a um safety and security meeting on friday and uh lisa swanig was uh available as one of the organizers and she was able to go through all of the securities that we have in place um that have the end uh njdoe even though we are hybrid and we are not on site for the whole uh day or the whole weeks and everything how the drills have to be continued and how that we have to keep monitoring um we also discussed um all of the other areas of programs that they have in place to stop the bleed for the new jersey schools which we are in partnership with um the njdoe and the university hospital and which is

ongoing training um so we talked about contact uh contactless communication software our secure radio and phone communications our sandy hook promise of cease we are continuing with we are continuing to conduct k-12 site assessments with nice assessment tools and the teachers and staff coaches advisors first aid certifications um there was also discussion by um our business administrator how we are going to partnership with the rec departments and continue to have our outdoor facility oh deb i think you might have gone out oh i'm sorry can you hear me could everyone hear dad i think you announced it okay so the last part was just that we were going to be uh working with the rec departments and having our outdoor facilities available for the spring and summer for their usage okay great thank you for

that update any questions anyone have any questions for uh safety and security okay and you're up policy okay so the um policy committee met on um february 24th as a i think we were zoom it might have been google meets but i'm not 100 sure we were virtual um and we met from 6 p.m to 7 18 p.m um the attendees were myself frank karate anthony rubinich melissa kidna damian and melissa um let's see so the agenda included a number of um of policies um some of them were revisions some were adoptions and some were abolishments so um just so the public knows all the policies once approved you get put up on the website so you could always read these policies if you so choose to do that um but i will give you

a brief brief summary um so policy zero one four five board member resignation and removal is a mandated policy and is revised um it now says that any board member um who doesn't who fails to attend three board meetings in a row is cause um to be terminated it doesn't mean they will be terminated is they could be terminated and the real change is that it used to be three main board mem meetings but now they're considering committee meetings as well so any three of any type of meeting in a row um can be a cause for determination policy zero one six four point six is the remote public meeting door and um during an emergency it's a mandated new policy i don't know why they resent it but it was sent in january and

we adopted it on january 25th 2021. uh regulation 1642 is earned sick leave law it's mandated and was revised and you cannot penalize an employee for using earned sick leave during a public emergency so this really was a change of um putting some covered language in there uh policy 1643 is the family leave uh mandated policy it's new um family leave now includes foster parent and also uh can be used uh for any state of emergency so besides coven it now includes any state of emergency uh policy three four three one point one the family leave mandated was abolished so some of the policies that i'm going to let you know that are abolished though it's not that we don't have the policy anymore it's just that it was moved and incorporated into other policies

policy 4431.1 family leave mandated was also abolished policy 3431.3 new jersey family leave insurance program mandated was abolished policy and regulation 53301.01 administrative administration of medical cannabis mandated revised so first it says schools must have a policy that allows for administer administering uh cannabis on school grounds a school bus or a school sponsored event the administrating person must be designated caregiver so it's not like the kids can just give it to themselves and the word marijuana was changed to cannabis so they're not saying marijuana anymore policy 7425 lead testing of water in schools is mandated revised instead of doing it every six years schools have to do it every three years and that will start in 2021 22 school year and the results must be review reviewed in 72 hours regulation 7425 lead testing of

water in schools mandated it's new and just that regulation just says we have to have a schedule for testing lab results and analysis policy and regulation 7430 school safety was mandated and abolished um the next group of policies is is a change of no child left behind is now changed to every student succeeds so a lot of this is just word changing policy two four one five every student succeeds act mandated revised and in that it's the wording is changed and um no child left behind behind is now taken out and exchanged to every student succeeds acts which would be e-s-s-a policy 2415.0 academic standards academic assessments and accountability is mandated and it was abolished policy 2415.02 fiscal responsibilities mandated revised and that's just the language change adding in essay policy 2415.03 high highly qualified

is mandated policy which was abolished uh policy 2415.05 student surveys analysis and or evaluations it's mandated revised and that's just the language changes to essay policy 4125 employment of support staff members mandated revised language changes to essa policy 636 political contributions mandated revised the language was changed to federally funded programs which includes essa policy 8330 student records mandated revised we will provide student records to military now and the language changes to essa policy 9713 recruitment by special interest groups mandated revised students can opt out of having information sent to recruiters with parents permission and parents must be notified of this option annually so that is all our policies some of these are um when a policy is mandated we can um we can approve them in one reading by um um taking out robert's rule

of order and that's in the agenda tonight you'll see that most of these are going to be approved with just one reading so we also discussed our board procedures for um for our board committee reports and this is really internally for the board but we just wanted to re-emphasize for board members um that after a committee meeting the chair must send out the minutes to the committee within 48 hours using the provided format which i had emailed everyone in the format and the committee members have 24 hours to respond with questions or changes after the 24 hours the chair will send out the minutes to the whole board and donna coco to put the minutes on the board portal um for board members only it's just our notes and um the chair will report to

the public at the next board meeting and that is all i have and thank you to all the people committee members um for joining me in the meeting and getting through all that [Music] i have a quick report mary shark ed um i just wanted to update the board um ann and i met with mr d the birdo and mr mitchoshi regarding the jersey schools sustainable new jersey schools and just to get a little update so as you know we achieved our bronze award um last year and we're working towards our silver certification and we receive many points for the curriculums that teachers have placed in all disciplines so it's not just science it's not just there's a lot in math and in english so we're receiving many points for those appreciate all the teachers

work on that many of the plant activities that we had this year like the the garbage audit and stuff were pushed off due to covid so hopefully we'll get back to those in the next coming months and we can move more towards that certification um also they're planning or in the beginning stages of a tree planting project for the district so um mr g alberto will update us on that once they get a true plan in place and what they're going to do so i just wanted to thank them for all their work and continuing that and miss of all the other chaos and it's greatly appreciated so thank you very much thank you cindy i have a report mary okay great a lot of reports tonight yeah so uh i'm reporting on the finance

committee uh so we met on february 17th at 6 30 our meeting was actually held in person in the middle school library so it was really nice to get together we kept social distance but it's nice to be face to face so um what we discussed was uh we talked about the facility upgrades so the high school cafeteria uh was upgraded with new led lighting new ceiling and paint um the other led lights were free due to a state rebate program looking to do now is upgrade the floor in the kitchen and looking at options either ceramic or epoxy we received one estimate for an epoxy floor and waiting on another one so more to come on that uv disinfectant system so as we know we're currently using merv 13 filters in all our ac

units looking to go back to a merv 8 or to remove the strain on the ventilator but in order to do that you need something in place to protect the school so we're looking at an ultraviolet light system for both schools the system will cover the classrooms hallways bathrooms basically every place in the school and what it is it's a uv light that gets mounted to the ceiling and will sanitize the whole room so you know with the ac unit just filters the air coming in and around this will fill this will sanitize all the surfaces so um there's a company called pure um that has provided us an estimate and we're going to do a zoom meeting with them with the whole board to present the details that they can have presented to us

so we understand exactly what this is uh but it sounds like a really good system so more to come on that as well uh unit ventilators so um you know ventilators have been upgraded over the past um past several years at a rate of four per year in the middle school so we still have 29 left to do so we're looking to go out and try to purchase them all at once and uh receiving estimates for those um as well as an electrical upgrade so the middle middle school is in need of an electrical upgrade we're going to be planning on going out for bid in the march time period uh with the quick turn for the upgrade and when we do it we'll take into account the new unit ventilators that are being installed

uh we'll be putting in new electrical services panels um and a new generator because the generator that's presently there has been there since uh it's the original one it's been there since school opened so um and it can't not really power the whole school so we're looking to do that and then we discussed the budget briefly as of the time of the meeting the governor um has delayed his budget address making it difficult for you know melissa to finalize um her budgets um but one thing we need to take into account is we're going to have to upgrade around 900 chromebooks across three grades for the students so um the budget has to be approved by march 15th board of ed so what we're going to do is we're going to be meeting together as

a committee again on march 10th to review the budget that's all i had okay great thank you ray um are there any other board committee reports are there any comments from board members on any of the reports they heard no okay um then at this time we will move on to public comments i will open the floor for comments on agenda items only in accordance with bylaws0167 a copy of which is available on our district's website the board is now opening the meeting for a period of public comment please remember to announce your name place of residence and group affiliation if appropriate your statements will be limited to three minutes in duration the board will of course consider your comments as they relate to its obligation to effectively govern the west essex school district so

at this time i want to remind um the public that uh this is just for the items that we will be voting upon uh this public comments section any comments on any of the presentations um that were uh given this evening uh those comments should wait or any questions should wait until the second public comment section also i just want to remind parents that specific questions concerning their individual child should be directed to their teacher or supervisor or the building principles and okay melissa will set the timer for three minutes if there are any questions you can raise your hand um i saw let's see i swear that we prince had her hand up that was a mistake sorry about that oh no problem okay so then i do not have any okay then we
