022would love to have you say or we understand if you would like to leave as well so i'll leave just a couple of minutes for you to do that if you would like and then we will move on to the next part of our agenda thank you thank you thank you everyone appreciate it [Music] congratulations okay yes okay i think everybody's moved in thank you the next item on the agenda is public comments to the board this is the part of our regular meeting where we allow the public to give us comments that they would like us to consider please remember that comments are limited to three minutes per person and that we try for privacy's sake to not uh mention in public names of students or administrators or teachers staff so with that i

023will open for public comment yes sir could you stand and give us your name and um address my name is gregory mess it's m-o-e-b-s and my address is one zero eight blender thank you i wasn't aware of some of the restrictions so pardon me while i edit as i speak sure of course and i will do my best to fit within three minutes but there's a number of items from this past semester to work through good evening i'm a parent of two students within the avon school district even though the focus of this evening's discussion is looking forward to what plans should be in place for the upcoming school year it is still important to review the prior year and learn and understand what went well and what did not i would like to share

024with the board some information specific to our experiences and the impact to my family as background for the issues i'm about to present we do have a family member who was at high risk relative to severe coveted illness as such my wife and i remained cautious relative to risk exposure and also conducted as much research as possible to maximize my family safety one of the decisions we made in 2020 was to keep our two children at home for the fall semester for e-learning my daughter was a sophomore at avon high school this past year and have been accepted to the wynn symphony which could be clear as the highest level concert band at the high school with avon offering no hybrid options allowing her the opportunity to play with the wind symphony was one of

025the factors that informed our decision to allow her to to attend in-person learning for this past spring semester for the most part we were satisfied with how the school operated coded protocols with the notable exception of the high school band department our first observation in regards to issues was with a concert hill in january this event coincided with being in the middle of the surge in code cases in indiana it was reassuring that there was going to be limited audience attendance and that the event was going to be streamed via facebook live however as soon as the concert began we were shocked to note that the students were seated in a normal art orchestral arrangement spaced immediately side by side with rows faced immediately behind each other obviously students could not be wearing masks while

026playing woodwinds or brass instruments and the shooting arrangement would dramatically increase risk of exposure our concern was heightened even further when my daughter reported in the following days that several members of the woodland section were missing from band class the second issue occurred throughout the spring semester when the state health department announced in february that schools were going to be permitted to follow a three-foot rule for facing in the classrooms the band directors decided incorrectly that they could take advantage of the three-foot rule my wife and i exchanged several emails with one of the directors who is part of the wind symphony in an attempt to have the in-classroom seating arrangements during band change when we stated that they were in violation of the coded spacing protocols we were ignored when we emailed that director

027and copied the principle the direct quotation from the state directors is explicitly stating the band programs were not permitted to follow the three foot wool and was still maintained six foot spacing the only concession given to us was that our daughter would be singled out and allowed to sit six feet from the other students in the band room the rest of the band would maintain a three foot spacing the third and most egregious issue stems from the planning and execution of the end of year concert in may when our daughter reported that the directors were again planning to use standard orchestral seating arrangement we reached out to the principal who had the final say relative to the school code of protocols to have him intervene following several discussions by phone we believed he had secured

028an agreement between the principal and the band director that the students would be spaced as far as possible given the auditorium space constraints this should have meant approximately five foot spacing in all directions given the limitations of the auditorium space instead the director completely disregarded the agreement just four days before the event on the monday before the concert we learned that the shooting arrangement would be unnecessarily constrained by the addition of risers with minimal space into either side within the rows and less than four foot space in between rows mr monis your time is up unfortunately is there a way that you could summarize for us um and then if you would like to turn that over to us we'll be happy to put that fully in the minutes i can do that yes um

029basically in summary what we are concerned about is the in particular band directors not following the we are one engagement respect and accountability throughout all those issues and you'll see in the minutes the additional details that i outlined where the director failed to meet those in particular and we just wanted to make you aware and ask that perhaps something could be done in this regard appreciate that thank you so much and if you wouldn't mind giving those to stephanie and or dr windham um all of that information will be put into the minutes thank you very much other comments yes sir basketball did you say nick nick basketball okay thank you my attention here is for the following upcoming school session my intention is to bring awareness to the unethical and dehumanizing potential of segregating

030students that have not participated in an intervention involving an experimental drug that is not approved by the fda also to uphold my duty as an american citizen stand up against policy to challenge our freedom of choice medical freedom and the ability to make private family decisions without having to explain oneself to state or government organizations as a public school this is not your right to police medical freedoms according to the vaccine adverse reporting system as of june 7 there has been five thousand children eight deaths reported potentially from the copenhagen vaccine one might say this is far less deaths than hospitalizations that has been contributed by the wild virus but keep this in mind this is supposed to be the medicine not the problem i will refer to 17 year old utah native and school

031basketball player everest romney and his family that was impacted by the copa 19 vaccine and shortly after getting the vaccine he experienced experience swelling in his neck and experienced headaches which was dismissed by the pediatrician that was diagnosed with pulled muscle but shortly thereafter ended up in the icu with blood clots the whole point of this record is in someone's authentic choice to get vaccinated um if they're good with that then that will be good cosmos if you're being forced or threatened to be inoculated and you become verbally damaged by this unimproved drug this is this is immoral many levels so segregating the definition of segregating the action or state of setting someone or something apart from others this was pertaining to the indiana board of health recommending segregating unvaccinated kids with additional policies such

032as mass wearing excessive social distancing and mandatory quarantine in 1954 the landmark supreme court ruling groundwork board of education was an initial win in order to begin to put into racial segregation in public schools this was a huge move towards ending graceful segregation public schools although this was just the beginning and after this decision it took two to three more decades and several other portlands to really solidify the actual integration of all races into the same public schools the reason i bring awareness to this president in this present moment is if you decide to set these policies and take away the freedom of our amount families and ultimately the children in our schools where does it stop it took 30 years or more after groundwork board of education in the racial segregation if you begin

033this ideology where will our freedom be in 30 years from the next step for the next generation i'm asking that you take a leadership role and say no not on my watch i will not perform the political propaganda that can shift the psychology of our children and will protect the freedom of choice for our avon families and i pray for you and i hope you make an ethical decision [Music] other comments if not oh i'm sorry yeah right oh i'm sorry i will let you go first pardon me i was not planning on saying anything today so i jumbled it all over the place i apologize uh i know everybody here is under immense pressure hi kim this is greg i can't hear the speaker can you move her forward oh sure yes [Music] okay

034um i have two sons in avon schools thank you um and both are under age 12. i i realize that there are a lot of people who are hesitant about mass wearing and also about the vaccine i am not one of those people so you know but my current concerns are my children i think hovered i don't want that to happen i've done everything in my power for the past 15 months to keep that from happening and i i know that it's coming up of optional masks i know that that's a thing that that could happen uh i also know that in order for masking to work it has to be done by everybody who is unvaccinated that said those 12 and over they have had the chance to get a vaccine and they're they

035can rest easy my children can't so what i ask is a compromise that until the children within avon school systems can receive the vaccine and those who are under 12 that the intermediate and elementary schools do enforce a mass mandate now it's looking like it's going to be in september or october that that is happening give us till november i don't i i don't feel safe sending my children to school with that not in place this past year we had we had an online e-learning action and it was very limited but i certainly appreciated it and we took advantage of that um but we're not going to have that this next year so in order for my children to be in public schools you're taking away the only option that i know that would make

036them safe i don't like masks i hate them i think we all do but i'd rather have something that is an annoyance for for a few more months than something that is potentially giving my children problems with their lungs with their hearts something for the rest of their lives [Applause] do i come forward or if if you can because we have a board member that is uh dialed in remotely so he can hear from that microphone okay my name is stephanie bates and my family represents 20 years in avon schools i've compiled a list of actual problems and symptoms of students in our very schools these are real testimonials from the parents of students right here in our hometown and the symptoms are a direct result of mask wearing nose bleeds having to stop your

037emotions chronic rash under bottom lip mask filling up with sweat over the course of the day the parent discovered the mask skunk after just one day of wearing though it was a fresh mask child came home crying over mask wearing and mask enforcement sore ears teachers constantly babbling with kids mask wearing headaches nausea feeling faint this is called hypoxia and it's caused by oxygen deprivation constant nosebleeds irritation under mask six-year-olds with daily headaches nausea abdominal pain exhaustion long naps immediately after school and this is a 17 11 and 9 year old set of siblings uncharacteristic malaise irritability and education masked acne tired irritable and hot breathing difficulties chest pains heart palpitations serious and debilitating panic attacks never had them before personality changes one high schooler witnessed two separate friends having very serious panic attacks which

038rendered them incapable of going in the school building these are top notch highly motivated top of the class students and i'm positive the school never knew these students um even had this problem and they just did their school online and um so they were invisible to notice ten and eight-year-olds with headaches fatigue sadness blues lack of connection an eighth grader with severe panic attack after repeated prompts to put masks over her nose expressed she was panicked and asked to go to the um to the hallway to breathe and she was told no panic attack high achieving kid but hadn't even had a panic attack prior fifth grade with anxiety headaches very irritable tiredness not to mention all of the other psychological issues these are causing more angry now and irritable a fourth grader with headaches

039every day anxiety tiredness loss of focus a great um a fifth grader with headaches anxiety fatigue depression apathy not wanting to go to school fourth grader with migraine level intensity headaches regularly depression loss of focus confusion a seventh grader with increased acne in um in their mass covered area apathy depression inability to see value and peer friendships somebody says my children were tired and they were sick and tired of being yelled at in the hallway about the mask they cried in the morning having to go their main symptom was tiredness they would sleep a lot after school a 9th grader with acne headaches i think you get the impression i have more there are my list goes on i'm scrolling down i want to read them all to you the unfortunately i understand and so

040um this is just a small sampling in our community our very community and this is absent of long-term effects it's not even going to indicate the brain development the respiration the mental and sociological health outcomes so i say avon school board you you have the power to make the decisions for our community children these are our actual children your children you have the responsibility in the state to make these changes if you're going to be the power over our children then be the ones who make the responsible caring choice for your charges don't pass the buck don't wash your hands of this and say those over you will tell you what to do i am asking you to allow the children of the avon school system to breathe unmasked avon schools good evening my name

041is john pedro and i have a under 12 year old daughter in avon schools i came here tonight uh first of all to hear a compelling argument of why we should press forward from what has been a successful plan and to go against not only the cdc but the department of defense uh in an approach and a plan just to appease uh some people that you could probably see in this room very evidently let me tell you appeasement does not work going with a plan that's proven until the cdc will come out with new guidance i don't really know who here thinks that they know more than the cdc okay as as almost 20 years of defending this country for the department of defense i can tell you that we took this seriously from the

042very beginning secretary esper on federal installations kept us when we put in social distance indoors and maps i thank you for the school board for the wonderful plan that you accomplished last year and kept us in person this would be a decision point for my wife and i uh this this fall if it were not to be put in place uh a plan that was safe thank you [Applause] yes that's really unfair because you know i want to comment on another topic this has been a long-standing rule for our school board so well i know would you like to speak now would you like to speak somebody else talk twice so no i guess they won't okay any other comments yes hold on just a moment she's first oh i'm sorry no go ahead she'll

043be next my name is angel thank you and i'm a wife a mom a small business owner and a taxpayer um i have lived in ammon community for nearly 20 years and i love this community um i want to start off just by saying a big thank you to all of you for um what you have done you've done an amazing job in the face of incredibly difficult circumstances um and i applaud your determination to move forward with in-person learning this year you know many other school districts chose to about to the pressure to keep their kids at home and i really think it will prove to be to their detriment that they did not do in personal learning you showed much courage and boldness in the face of a lot of fear and fear-mongering

044in my opinion in the same spirit of courage and boldness i am asking you to decide to give parents the right to determine whether they want their children to continue to wear masks or not you teach our children to be critical thinkers and i'm asking that we do the same the data shows that children are not carriers of this disease they do not and will not contribute to widespread outbreaks of cobalt among teachers and staff the stats from the cdc which are continually being revised by the way now show that the survival rate in the 0 to 19 age category is 99.997 in the 20 to 49 age range which i'm sure covers probably the largest majority of school staff is 99.98 um you have more of a chance of being struck by lightning or

045getting in a car accident than you do of dynamic um yet people do not let this detour them from living you know they get in their cars every day they go places the fact is that the side effects from masquerading are i think more detrimental to our children than kobe the countless instances of psychological physical and emotional side effects that mask wearing um have are much more difficult to ascertain and may sorry let me start that the countless instances of psychological physical and emotional side effects of mask wearing are much more difficult to ascertain and may have much longer lasting side effects than culvert itself will these side effects should not be underestimated and i'm asking again that you allow us to be parents and to be the decision makers for our families please choose

046the wise decision to make masks optional for all april schools thank you [Music] hello um everybody my name is i'm sorry my name is corey girvis 1392 run i have two daughters one is just finished third grade the other one finished kindergarten i was very glad that yvonne decided to go ahead with in-person learning my husband and i were very happy about that we moved here from northwest indiana a couple years ago and the school district we came from was doing like a hybrid cycle thing so we were comparing those with friends and they were all jealous i don't wish my kids could go back in person so i do appreciate that that was implemented and i think considering all the contentious arguments from both sides i think you know overall it was a positive

047thing but i can tell you as a mother my two girls every morning they were scared to put their mask on because by lunchtime they were both like out of breath my younger daughter complained of headaches all the time my same younger daughter was being bullied by a kid in her class they did nothing about it didn't take the kids to the principal didn't have that conversation another kid in her class put his hand down her pants forgive me i'm sorry if there's children here they did nothing about it it took my husband threatening to call the police before the principal got involved what happened earlier in the same school year the principal was involved because a kid in her class didn't have his mask on properly now i i understand everybody has a view

048on all this okay but as a mother of two impressionable children it infuriates me that that's where the priority lies i perceive that the priority was oh let's make an example of this kid for not wearing his mask properly oh but this little kid could touch this little girl under her pants and be you know perfectly fine so as a parent of a couple kids i just had to share that i had to speak out for my girls and for all the other kids that you know come home and they're upset or they're distraught or my my older daughter's on the autism spectrum she has sensory issues doesn't like things too close to her skin or too close to her face i had to fight tooth and nail with her teacher in order to give

049her just an opportunity to breathe during the day and it i felt bad because it occurred to me there are other children in her class who probably looked at her and thought well what makes her so special why can't i get a chance to take a mass break and so you know just just you know take it for what's worth it from one human being to you to all of you i just ask you to please consider all of this the best interest of our children i agree with many of the comments i heard regarding cbc stats it's out there on the website and mainstream media is not necessarily putting in your face and single by the way revise the number but it's a simple click and search away i promise you so that's all

050i have to say and thank you guys very much for your time [Music] um mrs grina sweet we're going to need contact information from you before you leave if you wouldn't mind maybe dr sullivan could you um handle that for us please thank you other comments yes not about the same issue i wish i could comment on the mask issue but unfortunately i feel like there's a bigger issue of play here your name my name is brianna george give me my address please governor south carolina 625 east um i've been dealing with you guys for a while been a few school board meetings for them this is half of my academic time every month just half a day because i couldn't carry the rest i've been here a long time i've let my kids go

051to these districts i've asked you guys i've come into these movies and i've fed you guys you guys not you do you or you you guys you are our elected officials i thank you to do your job i've fed you i've asked you i'm not the only person in this community okay we cannot have a person at the high school in charge of sports who gets a demotion that makes the same amount of money for your contract we cannot have have a principal at the high school who is not doing his job and did not do his job for four years on top of the athletic director you guys cannot look at this and do nothing and what i see right now is you were doing nothing and there are comments that have been made

052since last week that i don't have a child in the districts okay fine i'm taxpayer i paid my tax dollars go with this district i'm 100 percent positive that i'm sure the four of you and mr dana you guys didn't bring my hands on capacity okay my daughter doesn't go to this district because there is no way that i could let her go to school in these districts i wouldn't i didn't she's a banana she's in the online program at big davis because this school this high school has become so toxic that i can't let her go here and and she comes from a school district in texas that's much larger than any of you guys can probably envision she she's got four of this high school in her building that's where she came from

053so my issue with with you guys is this i need you to do your jobs and if you don't want to do your job then there's no there i'd like for you to use it you can step down you can resign or i will make it my life's goal at this point to figure out how to move forward i will petition senators and congressmen and our state legislature to instill a referendum because we don't have one in this state i knew that when i made that comment that everybody got an email but i will make it my life's goal at this point to make sure the people on this school board do not get reelected as for the paid officials in this room you know do your job and do it the way community wants

054you to do it because you're here by our leave not yours we take your salaries all of you guys in this room it is that's where you that's where our tax dollars go that's where tax dollars go that's where our referendum goes and mr dana that goes for you too sir i know you're there i'm not going to play around anymore but i'll tell you what i would be here for every single board meeting until you guys do what you should do thank you um are you coming forward okay you and then you um i'm kaden stobbs i am currently a student at high school um sorry i have severe asthma and we're in math i'm going to get overwhelmed i'm sorry hold on no you're fine you just take your time you're a student

055but um i am constantly up and down stairs you know and i can't breathe i really cannot breathe and by the time i get to my costume i'm sitting now i'm sweating and i'm pain panting because i cannot breathe and getting a drink of water is not going to do anything for me it's just going to make me feel even worse um and somebody in here i don't remember her name but she said about her some little boy putting her his hands on her pants and nothing's being said about it i myself had been sexually assaulted school did nothing i go to school and i get yelled after not having my mouth i have it like this trying to be able to breathe at least with some fresh oxygen and i get yelled at that

056i'm gonna get a detention that i'm going to be in some severe trouble because i cannot breathe and the fact that i have a mask on and i'm breathing out and i'm breathing back in the air that i just breathed out i get lightheaded i feel dizzy i just i can't process and i this year i probably got better grades but i know for sure the information that i got i could not really focus on i could not take in because i was too worried about not passing out in the middle of class to not fall asleep because i can't breathe and i just feel drained of energy i can't go to school and enjoy school i feel attacked every time i want to sit and actually take moments myself take a breather and not

057feel like my world is being shrunk i i would just like to go to school and go there have my schooling and my learning and remember it and like just how do i actually want to do good in school and not want to feel claustrophobic and just drain all the name time i i would love to go to school and enjoy it not feel like i'm pressured to do something else not be told every little thing to do i don't want to be controlled by everybody i am 18 and i would like to have my freedom especially about a mask a little piece of plastic that's just going over my face and honestly it's not doing anything i hate wearing it and i don't wear it as much as i like if i don't have

058to wear it i don't wear it and over this year i have been quarantined so many times and i have not once got copic over actually more than a year me and my family none of us have gotten covered and it's been a year and a half of wearing our mask when we don't like not wearing our mask when we don't need to and wearing it when we absolutely have to going to school is the only time i wear it and i've been quarantined five six times and nothing like it's it makes no sense to me yes okay hi my name is michelle i live in abel and i have four kids who attend avon school i didn't plan on speaking so bear with me as i fumble through this my heart goes out to

059that girl because i suffer from those same things i pulled my four kids out of school last year not because i feared coveted i don't but because i didn't want my kids to suffer with the dumbass stuff it's ridiculous there are options out there for families who want to not or who want to not be around other people i sent my kids to indiana online connections academy it's a free public school i was home we didn't have our mass on my kids did better learning actually their grades all went up we had a great year unfortunately all their all the activities we were supposed to do were cancelled because of colvids so they've just been stuck in my living room and while i love my children they do need to interact with other people i

060don't want my children feeling like that little girl over there but they have a hand over their mouth so they're trying to learn they're here to be educated their body their choice leave their faces alone they're allowed to breathe while they're at school again there are options for you that are free public school offers you everything that avon offers in the the same tv of your living room i know my children have been in it because i was fearful so you have options and i would like for you to know that leave everyone else's mouths alone let my kids breathe please thank you yes my name is danielle larimer i have sent many requests for copies or links to educational materials provided to my child in regards to sel or case i have been told

061that the materials may only be viewed in person in the school which violates the no visitors rule i was falsely told that to provide me with additional viewing would violate alleged copyrights and or vendor agreements i say closely because even my request to review those alleged restrictive contracts was denied please provide me with copies or links to these educational materials to allow me to review thank you thank you [Applause] other comments yes sir [Applause] like to uh first uh what is your name oh my name's aaron browder okay with the 1066 spanish lake drive okay um like many of us i'm here in regards to match for the upcoming school year but i would like to say a thank you to all of you for the courage to go in person and keep the kids

062in person last year they took a lot of courage i hope you'll have the same courage and go mask optional for 2021 mass were intended to be a mitigation to risk before we can discuss them i think it's vitally important to discuss the risk after 16 months we've learned a lot the science is clear on a few things namely the kids by far the least affected by covid i recently read in the scientific publication that an unvaccinated child has roughly the same risk as a vaccinated 30 year old for severe disease put it simply kids who literally have no risk for perspective and to those who argue that kids have died from cobalt there are 80 million kids in the united states under 18. the last 15 months for cbc david we have 47 000

063kids that have died from all causes of the 47 300 under 18 have died with covet and with is a key word as all hospitalized patients were tested there was not a single not one death without a comorbidity and most had multiple so these were sick kids of these 300 roughly 40 percent this is from the cdc didn't even have a symptom of coping so over the course of the 16 months total of cova cases were less than a half percent of all adolescent deaths 99.5 percent of desperate from other things the science is clear the kids aren't at risk so if we go back to mitigation since kids are not at risk they argue we need to do we do not need to do any mitigation strategies for children including mass however to the

064question of mass effectiveness a recent study from brown university for massachusetts new york and florida schools that is currently being peer reviewed stated there was no correlation of spread in schools with mass versus schools without them put simply massive kids made no difference and even when avons and even avon's own data there was no increased spread from kids in person versus kids not a person schools were as safe as they were in their homes in regards to adolescent spread to adults vaccination rates have went up among adults kids rates of infection have dropped even faster thus kids are not the vectors of this disease they were not and are not spreaders through other kids or adults every adult working in avon schools has them continue to have the opportunity to be vaccinated to reduce their

065own risk i ask that we follow what we've learned the kids are not risk they're not spreaders and masks are not effective and avon should make mass optional as the seven one let our kids get back to normal school let them live and let them learn like kids again thank you [Applause] other comments go ahead uh my name is jennifer smith i live at 8 27 foreign [Music] i can't tell you how these masks affect these kids lives they can't see each other they can't see emotions my kids hate where i can't tell you how much money we spent out my ass that were lost i had to wash them every night even if they washed it still didn't do the best i actually have been researching this a while um the ex vice president

066profiler has actually come out and said the vaccine is not safe it causes blood clots he has also said that children do not do not transmit coded i really and i work in healthcare i wear these things all day i actually last year had a major surgery in both my eyes because i bent over and this mask put me right in my eyeball they're not safe these are they don't protect from anything and i think as parents we know what's best for their kids and i think we should have the option to say whether or not they should have their mask or their parents we know what's right for them and i know you guys you guys work for us we pay you and if there's another referendum i can tell you if you do

067not go with mass optional everything about 18 years gonna pass that referendum again so please please do the best for our kids [Applause] someone in the back here of a child who had a severe vaccine reaction it is not fair to think that everyone here just needs to get vaccinated all the kids need to get vaccinated because the reactions are real my son had to have brain surgery and um so we no longer ask me because of that reason and i would not be okay with him going to school with people knowing our medical information because he has a higher mass because he's not vaccinated he's going to be eight years old he's actually in special needs classes he doesn't like to wear a mask he can't see he he stopped wearing his glasses all

068last year his vision is really bad um but he can't see because he can't wear the glasses with the mask they fogged up so he gets really angry he's broken them several times um so now he's gone all last year with having no glasses we're trying to get him back on wearing glasses because you can't see the board and it's just been you know the masks have just created more problems i get people are worried they're scared you have every right to be but it needs to be optional it needs to be a parent choice as to whether or not your child wears a mask in the same with the vaccine you cannot push somebody to do something where there is risk there has to be choice 100 and it is it's not safe i

069believe vaccines are not safe to each their own i don't care if you do but if you're getting the vaccine then you shouldn't be worried about those who do not get it uh are there any other comments i'd like to say something sure i wasn't even gonna say anything before what is your name sir my name is tony tony and i prefer enough to give my address that's fine my son's coming here he has a csl he's moving here to avon school from atlanta and if anything i should be more worried about you know him contracting coded because he's high risk but i'm not worried about coping because i call code and i took black seed oil and vitamin c and it was gone first of all you know you have to look at some

070of the stats right and then you have to ask yourself how many of you guys have kids how many of you guys have kids in a-box schools then how many of you guys wear these masks for eight hours a day or even longer you know that that piece that goes behind your ear hurts after a while and you guys are subject to kids to walk around and wear that all day long now at the gyms like the ymca i'm a member of that gym they they have rules where they ask you you know we have a mask but when you're working out you take them off right because if you put on a mask after you've worked out for anyone who works out you're probably gonna pass out kids are high energy they run around

071all day so they're out of breath but they're wearing a mask on their face and you guys are asking them to do that all day for eight hours just you know just think about that dr fauci and bill gates or whoever you know i'm not even going to poke stats those guys are making a fool out of everybody okay now he's on the fire because of his email dr falchi right and this is the guy that everybody is choosing to follow the girl that was uh that was here the avon student i feel bad for her look at what she's going through and you guys are making the decisions you have to make the decisions to whether whether you know allow the kids to either unmask or mask and if you're all parents and you

072know what the kids are going through i'm sure that you guys will make the right decision you know i'm a little nervous for standing up here and talking to you guys because i'm not the kind of guy that you know like to stand and talk to people i'm not a public speaker kind of guy but i feel like you know if you guys are all parents and you know what kids are going through that you will make the right decision because it's a little crazy to have people walking around with masks all day you know it doesn't make any sense i mean covet look at the stats no i mean how many people how many of you guys really know anyone who will die from coding maybe just a short you know percentage of people

073i don't even know if this thing is really what it is you guys remember the video with wuhan china where everyone was passing out in the streets that wasn't happening here so what was that this scared the hell out of everybody with that video so i mean i i i don't know you know if this kobe thing is really as serious as they say it is but cdc is changing stats all day long you know and now they're talking about zombies on cdc's workshop these are people these are people that we have to follow someone is making a lot of money to make a fool out of all of us thank you your time is up [Music] okay hi there sabrina halter um i do have four children two of which who are currently enrolled

074in avon schools and i do want to thank you guys for allowing us to come in and talk i've spoken with a few of you via email and i appreciate your candidness with us and i just want to quickly bring attention to a statement that was made by westwood washington's superintendent um thank you he said on his release that masks would be optional for their school district i don't think it's the school's role to encourage or discourage coveted vaccinations that's a parent's choice and it should remain to be a parent's choice and if we are looking at guidelines and facing whether our children will be forced to wear masks based on their vaccination status i just i can't say enough how that continues to remain a parent's choice many of us have talked this evening

075about how our medical information should not be made to isolate our children any further also i do want to bring attention to local schools that have already released statements for the upcoming school year unofficially brownsburg superintendent has recommended making masks optional again that is unofficially state malachi optional center grove optional westfield washington optional jay county optional south mo optional in tippecanoe county optional and those are just the ones that i've heard of and the ones that have made decisions thus far thank you thank you uh any other comments uh okay and we're going to move on with the rest of our meeting but i do want to thank everyone for being here um and for providing such um really food for thought for our administration and our board to consider um you know we've done

076our work a lot of times with no audience and while um a topic like or topics like the ones that are discussed are sometimes difficult for us to hear the fact of the matter is that we do our job better than we hear from our parents in our community um on what your sentiments are so our emails are all available i know that i've heard from many of you i try to answer each and every email as they come although with a busy schedule sometimes it takes me several at least a couple of weeks sometimes to get back with you but i do appreciate you being here this evening and for expressing your comments and your concerns thank you so much we're going to move on to the next agenda item which is uh unfinished

077business dr terhune our enrollment report please sure just really quickly just to point out we are in summer so we've taken out our graduating class and started replacing it with our incoming kindergarten so you'll notice a little drop kind of typical in the summer as we continue to enroll more and more kindergartners i think i'm looking for carry all day i think we're at 5 43 the last i saw is that about right close not sure okay so i think what i saw friday was 543 kindergartners so we've got a little ways to go that will pick up at the end of june beginning of july as we get closer to the school year which is typical and that's our enrollment report for now thank you board members any questions or comments about the enrollment

078report any predictions on other grade levels of the moment um the other look i mean look relatively normal uh right now we had a five grade level report that came out this morning um i will say first grade's a little smaller than what we would normally say it's like 645 644 and then kindergarten is in the 540 by 443 range and we have suspicions that both of those will jump up as we get closer if you think about this year's first grade or next year's first grade class were kindergartners last year with covid and things we wonder if people didn't keep kids home uh because of the situation so we'll just see how that goes as the summer continues on and you might have stated this dr true and i noticed that the enrollment decreased

079yeah and i think that's part of that that that large we had a large you know we have a kid that graduated that's what i figured out in that smaller kindergarten class so it'll be a little mid-year kind of mid-summer drop and then it'll pick back up okay and again i think we even said something here was moving into avon thank you for that but we have a lot of that too we have a lot of ins and outs during the summer too people a few moving out many more i think we're going to see movies as housing developments for those in our audience just because i know you can't see this number there are ten thousand one hundred students planned to be in avon schools in this upcoming year um that's our enrollment answer

080now as of today this morning yeah and that number will go up uh i would say go up quite a bit uh before we actually enter august in september so yeah in preschools part of that number yeah and they're pretty full uh they are i think they are maxed out at this point i think [Music] thank um next item on the agenda also under unfinished business is cost savings and efficiencies dr sullivan working with dianna kitchener brown and brown were able to procure a 100 345 pharmacy rebate this rebate comes as our pharmacy plan are down 8 and it will be credited to avon schools and the savings passed on to all avon employees who use the pharmacy benefit very good thank you we'll move on to new business and i would like to start

081with item a which is the school safety update i will turn i think i'm turning the meeting over to deb swain bayless as well as chief lighting all right so i'm deb slain bayless and i'm the school safety coordinator and i was just going to give an update on some of the things that we've done safety initiatives since july of 2018 up until today so as of july 2018 we had a cube a community meeting and there were 17 groups that included parents community members and the format of this was questions concerns and ideas so the common concerns from the groups were procedures building design school resource officers seemed to be a common theme throughout for all 17 of these groups the comments from the community where procedures need to be consistent throughout the corporation

082they want to know more about building access how we managed it how we can improve it safety training for staff and students securing fund entrances and increasing the number of sros to reduce the student tester ratio so the safety initiatives that have been put in place we've had a lot of things that we've put in place i'm going to highlight kind of the big stuff right now so we standardized our emergency procedures with a common verbiage so we now have flip charts for all of our teachers and all of our staff and we train on it and so the verbiage that we use is called the standard response protocol so it doesn't matter what building you're in we call it all the same thing so it's locked down secure the building shelter evacuate and hold

083and contour so those five things get applied to most emergencies that we have in our buildings so again it doesn't matter what building you're in the verbiage is the same and the flip charts are the same um and i've been in front of you before advocating not only for increasing the number of sros but that we needed our own police department because i wanted officers who were passionate about kids who knew they were going to be working with kids and that was hugely important we have 26 staff members who have completed basic training in the indiana school safety specialist academy so that academy is run through department of education and you do basic training and then you're certified and then you have to take 10 hours or two and a half days worth of training

084to maintain your certification so that's a legal mandate and that academy is nationally known and they they set the standard there are other states now looking at how that training is done they train about 2500 people i believe a year in the state of indiana with just fabulous national speakers um could i interject something there i believe from indiana school board association that avon was actually recognized as a leader in attendees at that particular conference i believe that our attendance vested all other school corporations in the state of indiana as of last year so it's a high level of achievement on our part and certainly training like that is is very important in our state in our safety efforts yeah absolutely we had five that completed basic training this year in the year of covid

085where everything was virtual so again i think that's fantastic um and then this summer we're going to secure our front entrances so we're going to lock our doors we're going to install buzzers and cameras we're also installing window foam on all of our exterior doors that have glass it is not bulletproof but it's bullet resistant and there's just a lot of benefits to fortifying the outside of those entrances so the safety initiatives we have in place for 21 22 supporting consistent safety practices in all of our schools so district-wide implementation of response protocols for threat of violence and suicide ideation we had a soft roll out of that this year and we tested it in various schools that had a need for it and it's worked pretty well so we will do some training in

086all of our buildings and we will do a full roll out of this program starting beginning this school year the goal is also to have safety committees in every building that meet twice a semester i should be able to get those scheduled and should be able to attend about 70 to 75 of them but between me and our sros assigned to the buildings we will have unified agendas and we'll have topics that we're discussing on a regular basis in all of the buildings written reunification procedures and staff training so we have pieces and parts of reunification not a solid written plan with people assigned so it's going to be a goal this year that we do that we have off-site locations um but it's all written people are assigned and we start training baby stepping

087into what that looks like and having parents help us out as we train through this and then upgrading our door access this summer actually it'll be early next fall so all of our employee badges are going to be switched over to smart badges so it's the same chip that's in your credit card that you put into machines so it's really advanced um and we're super excited about that the other thing we're going to be moving to is the digital platform for our for their chart right so crisis go is going to allow us to put all of our safety plans in one place we'll be able to have building maps and the big thing is we'll be able to do communication within the building and outside of the building so we'll have mass notifications and

088various levels of who's receiving what within the building and we know exactly what the notification is and this will help us again communicate with our sros on what's going on and teachers will get better communication within the building if radios aren't working or telephones aren't working in safety the one thing you have to do is redundancy so this is going to be another level of redundancy that allows us to alert people and to ensure that we're consistent in all of our buildings and then the certified indiana school safety specialist so with all of the redistricting we're gonna have three schools that doesn't have somebody in them that's certified so they'll be a focus on those three buildings to ensure that they figure out who they're going to send in the academy so that we have

089one person in every building as we build those safety teams up so that's my part of it i'm going to hand it over to chase you have any questions for me you want to wait till the end thank you thank you thank you all right well i'm going to say i remember my son being five years old and i was walking his chubby little hand into kindergarten for the first time and i let go of his little chubby hand and saw him walk into kindergarten for the first time and i realized that for the first time in his life there's somebody else in charge of my son's safety other than someone in his immediate family and so our officers who are here in this district take that charge very very seriously and so to the

090school boards of dr windham it's dr sullivan who oversees us on a daily basis i want to say thank you for your support because i know in some places that's not the popular thing to do but here in avon we have a team of highly trained uh very decorated officers who are here by choice now who are not here because they didn't have somewhere else to go something else to do they were here by choice and so tremendously excited for the work they did this year thank you very much for that i appreciate it very quickly officer terrence smith is our lead officer officer smith this year led implicit bias training uh for our district and always in an effort to be culturally competent and to work with all students of all kinds and colors

091he also completed a very prestigious leadership academy this year with a lot of other law enforcement leaders in the business did an incredible job and by the way he was voted esro of the year for five states by the national association of school resource officers so we're tremendously proud of him officer sharon is at the middle school uh south and west officer charon built and managed our fleet of police cars if you've ever seen a police car you know it's not just when you pick up off the lot it's one that has a lot of tools and technology in and he's responsible for that and does an incredible job with that he's he was certified this year with the highest level of certification possible in the state he was also certified with the highest level

092certification possible in the nation uh so officer shron is highly trained and and very very proficient in what he does officer craig is assigned to middle school north uh he completed indiana law enforcement academy this year which he has already been a police officer for a long time due to a loophole in state law he had to go back and do it again out of a class of 135 he was elected class president so he led all of those young men doing and young ladies doing that work so he was also certified as an advanced school resource officer this year tyler jean is in the hospital right now she just had a little baby jean this weekend so i tell you this is one young lady that i could not get to stop working we

093tried to put her on light duty a long time ago she refused uh she wanted to be a part of what we were doing here in the district so she worked well past her uh necessary requirements to be here by the way she earned a couple master's degrees this year got her license in social work in addition to being a police officer she wrote public safety curriculum for our students we will implement next year and she saved two lives by the way with a big old belly uh saved two lives of narcan who happened to be overdosing she just got the call and went there again with her uh big pregnant self and did an incredible job did did an incredible job off campus yeah off campus sorry thank you for saying that was off

094campus it was not our kids and not affiliated with our school district thank you very much for that clarification thank you uh oh my goodness we got another problem [Music] officer rooks joined us this this year from the avon police department he and tyler both assigned to the high school he directed our field training program with all of our new sros took over project lifesaver which is a project that helps us keep track of kids who um need some keeping track of and so he does a great job with that and he was voted the 2020 esro of the year for the state of indiana here are some of our major wins uh this year we set up the infrastructure of a police department we're not just a unit of the avon police department we

095are our own entity the school board or our bosses dr sullivan doctor windham oversee us directly so we set up the infrastructure of a police department which is a much bigger job than you can imagine all of our sro has completed over 160 hours of training that i'll share with you briefly later all certified staff this year and the entire district was trained on alice and what our sro is doing i'd like to take this time to recognize again dempswan bayless who is the school safety coordinator we would not be here if it wasn't for her she has been an incredible partner in safety and incredible asset to our school police department team and just does awesome work and is a part of everything we do and so she certainly was a part of this

096training as well we have a consistent sro in each of your child's buildings so if your kid is here on a daily basis they would know the same officer who's in the same school every day our model is a school resource officer program not a regular police department so we base everything we do off of this axis of relationships we want to build relationships with students with staff with you so that you know the same officer every day in the building so that you can have that relationship with them and understand that when we do law enforcement we do law enforcement in context we have very special very carefully selected sros who have been very specifically trained to work with students and properly equipped with people who like kids and so that's a a huge

097plus for us and then we have significant reduced juvenile delinquency uh in the district because of some programmings we have dr sullivan encouraged me in october this year to take care of some data or to to pay attention to some data for things we do maybe that has never been aggregated before and so we were able to quantify some of the work that we did this year even though our officers get tired of keeping track of their data all the time i think they will see why it's beneficial now here's our cumulative data since october we had over a thousand calls for service saying we need uh some help or support from our school resource officer we have 616 classroom contacts which means the teacher invited us in most of the time we have some

098that pop in every once in a while most of the time we were invited in to either read present some curriculum do a presentation talk to the class about police 616 classroom contacts this next data point is one that i'm um most proud of uh probably we have 14 criminal court diversions which means one of these officers had the opportunity to refer a kid to criminal court because of a criminal law violation that occurred but instead of referring them to criminal court we found a another alternative for them to deal with the same issue to provide a consequence to handle the issue with discipline or some support of some kind but we did not refer that to criminal court uh bogging down the court making the kid check a box the rest of his or

099her life that they had been arrested that was a significant reduction maybe from years past because of a new model that we have implemented community resource referrals at 23 so we come across a kid we say hey this kid may need some extra services counseling or may need some support at home or dcs or someone in the life of this child to support them that's what that is and then we dealt with 154 dcs reports uh this year that's not always because of something that occurs here on campus in our district but because of what goes on that we hear out in the community that gets reported to us we deal with 154. of all calls for police service this year .003 of them resulted in arrest we ended the year in a year 10

100000 students with three arrests that is a small number regardless of the size of district you go to but to have ten thousand kids in the district only having three uh that is an important statistic then the last full school year that we had before our police department was implemented because of the model because of the rotation maybe lack of consistency of officers our partners who are in hendricks county are incredible they just may not be using the same model we did the last full school year there were 18 arrests by way of context this year we had three uh for granting cost savings we have been awarded a hundred thousand dollars this year to pay for one of our sros so uh we are trying to be frugal and stretch uh money and get

101grants as much as we can to fund this effort to be responsible with your tax dollars we were awarded five thousand dollars uh by a local court um fund we were awarded three thousand dollars make sure people stop at bus arms to make sure your kids are safe uh when they're getting on and off the bus and then we are currently applying for a 500 000 grant to help support our communication system in the district via radio and another hundred thousand dollars for a school resource officer a couple programs we have going on is a reading program where we go around to elementary schools one of our officers gets a book reads to a classroom answers questions mostly about donuts and coffee but still still enjoy the time the proactive time with the kids we

102have a lunch program where we go bring board games and ask them questions they ask us questions that's an incentive to do well license plate art project if you see our police cars around town you may see some drawings on the front of them officer strong led that project this year that was our contest the best pictures or the winners placed on a license plate on the front of our vehicle it's really fun for our kids to see us and then public safety education we just go uh tell kids uh about public safety this is the last slide our goals for next year is to have a pre-arrest diversionary program where we can really formalize what some of those other consequences and results from criminal behavior may be our goal is to have a prevention

103education program where instead of just arresting kids or writing tickets for possession of vapes or possession of um low-level misdemeanor crimes things like that we want to prevent some of that by sharing the legal health and social consequences of engaging in that behavior and then we have a vaping reduction program that we are hopefully used we're gonna have some vape detectors next year in some places some of them are going to be real some of them uh not but you never know because we're gonna change them all the time so uh we're gonna we're gonna be sneaky about that uh and help support kids in the best way we can we're so thankful uh to the school board dr windham dr sullivan for having us every day certainly thankful again to death for all of

104her support and partnership with slack uh well i'll just make two quick comments about that first of all thank you as always uh deb for all of the support the guidance the work that you did bring us to this point um as chase said um we wouldn't be here today with the safety programs that we have in avon that are second to none literally second to none in the state of indiana without your guidance uh chase for you bringing your energy and your absolutely fabulous team of sros to us we sincerely thank you for that um it was only three years ago that we sat in a room upstairs and contemplated for the first time whether or not um having our own police department was in our best interest and there was there were a

105couple of things that were said in that meeting that really for me personally tipped the scales the first thing is that in schools enforcement is not just going in and finding kids doing wrong it's a lot lot about relationship building and about finding kids doing a lot of things that are right building on that sense of community that sense of safety and for that you've made a marked difference in not only our schools but in our community the other thing that i want to say personally one of the school police programs that you didn't put on here which is particularly important to me is that mary lee mayor community pantry which is a pantry that art doll i'm glad to see you here this evening that we have been feeding hungry kids in avon in

106a pantry in our community schools that most peop most people don't know about we're proud that most people don't know about it because that means that potentially the need for you to use it isn't there but there are a number of children that are in our school corporation that face hunger as their primary issue each and every day of their school career and as a result of that need a group of parents and teachers got together along with a community benefactor i happen to be blessed to be part of not only the donation side but also the philanthropic side and our officers made it a point to be at that community pantry on donation nights to help guide traffic in and out because it's pretty significant but also just because that is another connection point

107that they can have with children in our community um so that though they may be um fearful or reluctant about that need they see a bunch of smiling sros they're happy genuinely happy to see those children and their parents there so i want to just say thank you again for such a great effort on behalf of avon i would hold our safety program up as second to none as i said in the state and it isn't it isn't because of your training it isn't because of your background it isn't because of any of that it is because of your hearts that we have a successful program thank you very make much so i am i heard them back to the night we all were over at south and we had the community input session and

108i just really respect and appreciate that we took copious amounts of notes and we looked at what's what is our community saying they want because historically that was right after a couple of school shootings and we felt like we weren't as safe as we needed to be but we felt like our community because so many of our parents are in and out they're involved in activities they probably know and see things that we don't necessarily see and know and so we we sat down and for hours we just listened and then we it took time because it was so much it compiled it and got out and it get off got out all the great points you know aggregated it and here we see the next step in that whole process we're not finished i

109mean mr owen will have always have work to do right but that was the really kind of the beginning of that meeting and then um the avon police department they came alongside us and said yes it is time you are heading towards 10 000 students it is time for you to have your own place and we will mentor you we will walk with you we will we'll be your partners and boy they sure have been and they even they still come around and which is so great so just thank you so much for um now we're on to the sequel right and thank you for that thank you and then we'll continue to take input from our community because literally that's what helps shape us and shape our our tracks and shape our safety thank

110you true thank you and i too would like to thank everyone involved it's good to see the officers out and about with the kids being a former teacher retired those kids really respect you and you can tell you guys respect them and that they need that they need for someone you know to talk with them and you know just understand them and they love that so thank you for being there for the kids also mrs swain bamas thank you for all you have done for all this if it wasn't for you we wouldn't be looking at these guys and getting us going so thank you that one other thing i'd like to comment when you were talking earlier i appreciate that you send all employees the i'm not sure what you call it the test

111that we have to take is that you deb or the background checks yeah no no no it is the fear yeah i think it's terrible karen okay well thank you karen where we have to like we did one on racism and no who did that thing and thank you for all you guys do thank you we'll move on to uh oh unless you have anything to say item b which is a curriculum highlight um i need to jump off so oh yeah i want to thank you for letting me zoom in while i'm on vacation it was really important for me to both recognize your orioles and also hear that public comment so i'll follow up with the rest of the agenda with the staff and dr probably have some questions on your presentation as

112well but appreciate you guys for letting me zoom in and have a great customer thanks greg um okay item b is this curriculum highlight and update on virtual learning are you allowed to ask questions i'm sorry that's only during public comment well we're available though on email or or you can call us we our phone numbers are certainly available um update on virtual learning and cares and esther's funds where'd you go there you go we're here i came over here just like to see the board a little easier and dr lemay was over here also so i felt come over here with them a little safety of numbers thank you chase complements chase and officer craig and smith and sharon they're all here tonight in debt twain bayless there's been multiple times where i've gone

113to one or all of them and said how do we do this or how does this work or what do you think about this and um they have a lot of grace and patience with me and i greatly appreciate that so um moving on to our curriculum highlight for tonight we're going to talk a little bit just briefly about our virtual learning for next school year and some of our thoughts and direction we're heading and then dustin or dr lemay will dig into some of our esther's funding and what we have done with that so if you remember right after spring break we sent out a survey we reported that at one of our previous board meetings the results of that survey and that really directed how we were going to implement virtual learning for

114next year and that survey said like 36 of our respondents said yes i want to do virtual learning 47 said we're not sure yet we're waiting and if you think about those numbers we sent that out to 1100 people we were really overwhelmed with the possibility of having another large group of students virtual learning again this year so that's how we started planning part of that planning was ms alday put together a really great handbook and an application process for our students that wanted to apply to become virtual learners again next year and once we sent that out reality did not match the survey results from the spring i believe we had about 90 students respond that they were interested in some form of virtual learning much smaller than what we had anticipated so that

115really helped us focus and change how we're going to approach virtual learning for the 21-22 school year starting with elementary and intermediate we're going to have students zoom into classrooms that's our plan at this time and what we're looking at is still maintaining our referendum numbers of either 22 or 25 depending on the grade level in grades first grade through sixth grade and what we'll do is we're still working on but what's a virtual learner and i don't know what you want to say but the worth in other words it's a virtual learner can't just be one student it needs to be because there's a little greater need there there's a little little higher time on task for the teacher to help that student so is that student going to be worth like two regular

116students so will we decrease our classroom or his classroom by two students that's we're still kind of trying to find that right number right now to to make sure that we have the correct impact on the classroom but our in-person numbers will be smaller for teachers that are going to have zoom students we do know that and then we're also looking at other ways to help aid those virtual learners and and kind of kind of try to i guess uh finalize those details right now by looking at do they do we need an extra egg to pop in once a while help them or check on them things like that that's still kind of in our discussions right now but we're working on those and settling that down that's kind of the elementary intermediate version

117the more interesting one is where we've moved with high school and middle school cisc we looked at a lot of different options what we did last year was some virtual learning and edmentum was one option we felt like having our kids zoom into some of our high school classes was really difficult last year and we had some zoom only classes is the way we handled most of that and we didn't have enough high school students this year to have a zoom only class and as we were beginning to discuss this central education service center central indiana education service center came out with an option and they have indiana online and indiana online academy and the academy is now a synchronous option for students to have so in a little bit we'll ask you to approve

118a mou for us to join and send our middle and high school students through indiana online academy where for the four core subjects math science social studies and english they will have a live classroom teacher and they'll zoom in with that teacher that teacher will work for cisc but have students from all over central indiana as part of their classroom due to our small numbers that will work better for us we believe and probably more cost effective for us at this time too and so that's kind of where we've settled and then outside of their four subjects they can still take indiana online kind of self-paced classes or work through the high school through edmentum or some other options like that right now but those are probably the two primary other options to go with

119the synchronous learning we are also still going to hire and we're in the process right now hiring a virtual coordinator that will help us part of our agreement with cisc is if we approve if you approve the mou shortly we need to have a liaison between our district and cisc to help oversee concerns they may have with our students such and primarily they just want to make sure that our attendance is okay and so this person will help us with attendance we'll interact with families make sure that everybody gets enrolled in the correct classes when it's time to enroll and things like that we also have the virtual coordinator oversee our elementary and intermediate uh attendance and work with families there just like just like mrs froster did this year and she did a really

120good job with that this year and similar processes like that and then finally the part we're excited about is to join our curriculum team and help us develop opportunities to people what we call accelerate learning for students people talk about the achievement gap we're talking about accelerating learning to make up for anything any deficits that may have occurred through this year and this person will have a big role in that and help us coordinate through our schools with that and work as part of our curriculum team in creating opportunities for our students and our teachers to uh to make up for some of those potential losses and our next steps right now we are they actually mrs alday dr lemay interviewed for the virtual learning coordinator last week so we're moving along in that hiring

121process pretty quickly they have started contacting every family that signed up for virtual learning and reached out to them directly actually as much as earlier tonight i think just a couple hours ago is when that actually started and then the virtual coordinator will also start working with mrs alda and dr lemay probably dr sullivan a little bit in my absence on some of those initiatives i just spoke about and that person then will also collaborate with the high school and indiana online academy to roll out and they'll have some parent nights and zoom with our parents and say this is how this is going to work and explain that and so that our virtual coordinator will uh move forward with that right now i'm going to turn it over to dr lemay and let him

122talk about hester's thank you gary uh yeah we wanted to provide an update on our federal fund funding that we uh started last year and we'll go through the next few years or paul mentoring secondary school emergency release summary we'll start with tesla one which we received uh last year uh total allocation was over three hundred thousand dollars um that little share uh means that we share some of those dollars with our non-public schools so they receive 18 000 of those dollars and then you can see the liquidation date suggest suggested uses were remediation technology ppe seo and we are at this point we have 90 of the dollars allocated by the end of july will actually probably be a little bit higher than that and then we'll have to do some amendments and determine

123the need for the rest of those hours 183 approximately 183 thousand dollars working on went to salaries and benefits we hired temporary teachers to support virtual classes so we didn't have a negative impact on our in-class students we hired instructional assistants to support high school credit recovery i'm talking to mr shopley and his team that made a big difference and we'll continue that next year we're also based off of need we hired a temporary high school counselor to support scl and this summer his all day is supporting the kindergarten camp to support the runners at our title school about 150 thousand dollars with the technology and supplies and then you can see uh some of the breakdown of where those dollars went um curricular materials and then when you see uh closer to the bottom

124uh we did have a need to purchase additional laptops to make sure those students and virtual had access to two laptops so that was tester one now onto so2 and the dollars do go up total allocations of 1.8 million dollars one of the differences that you'll note between sr 1 and 2 is that there's no equitable share all those dollars stay in our public schools and then you can see when we receive the dollars in march and then we have until september 23 to allocate those dollars now allowable activities all as their activities all same activities plus improved air quality and accelerated learning uh were two differences between one and two you see some of the highlights um we're spending uh when you see that figure the four hundred thousand dollars for high school social

125workers and moving uh social worker off of uh project aware that's over a couple years so those salaries are uh it's not just one year we're supporting that over multiple years and uh big difference is to put uh more laptops and uh hands of our elementary students uh intermediate uppers one to one and our elementary uh schools um we don't have enough laptops for any more access and then we have uh 250 000 for instructional resources and to support remediation and acceleration that's three again uh the dollars go continue to go up again you'll note that there is no um no evidence shares so get all the dollars stayed in our public schools the application is due soon uh 6 25 and then with that return in person school is posted on our website on

126by the 24th another difference is there's a 20 percent set aside for that remediation and acceleration that doctor turkey talked about and then we have an additional year uh to spend uh s or three allowable uses all sr1 activities plus improve health air quality and accelerate accelerated learning you can see we are we have a solid draft of our application and our needs we should continue to have some discussion about prioritization uh but a big chunk of the money is report for staffing to support remediation acceleration seo and credit recovery uh we're hiring additional yale teachers and there was that also supported uh making sure that our title one schools those title one teachers were there to support those students only so uh you can see that the dollars also went to social workers uh

127virtual teachers and or assistants instructional assistants again to report support high school credit recovery uh we have set aside a million dollars uh for a capital improvement project uh there's a variety of ways we can spend that one what we're talking about uh most recently is addressing hvac issues again that combines with that air quality so that's something that we'll continue to talk about one thing that i'll note is you know when you see dollars allocated and you see that you have several years to spend that we can have dollars allocated for a specific use and then if those needs change we're allowed to do amendments throughout the process i think we may have set a record and necessary one and we amended that grant eight times so just making sure the dollars are going

128to the right places and then we have 500 thousand dollars for technology and software oh sorry and that that was it so that is our update thank you dr terharian dr lemay thank you very much for that presentation um we will unless there are any questions or comments on that we will move along to item c which is oh yes go ahead dr do we know about how many are enrolled virtual learning coming up um we had 91 or 92 actually apply i think we'll end up with right around 69 or 70. are they all grade levels all grade levels and they're i think in middle school in high school if i remember right there were 25 to 27 somewhere 25 or 26 in the middle of high school and then kind of on down

129from there fairly equally spread out i'd say kindergarten yeah kindergarten was very sparse like we're not gonna offer it actually so okay i was just curious we really just didn't have much response okay thank you thank you other okay questions move on to see uh dr windham this is the timeline for decisions for uh cover 19 protocol for the 2021-22 school year i think our agenda is wrong here but the presentation is correct let's not go backwards let's go forward all right um yes and i just want to thank uh everyone who spoke and we have heard and received multiple emails uh on this topic so i we just wanted to include on the agenda and stephanie can you pull that just click quicker oh how about i do it there we go thank you

130as as you may or may not know the governor has left the decision for covid protocols for the next school year with local school boards so that means means that each local school district is going to be handling this decision differently and will lead to inconsistencies across the state a couple of our speakers mentioned that some school districts have made those decisions and i certainly understand the desire to make decisions now but we want to make sure that we have been as thoughtful and deliberate about this decision as we were about the decisions we made last summer that paid off for our students that allowed us to open school in person on time and remain open all school year with over 90 of our students being in person our students had incredible opportunities this past

131school year because of the thoughtful and deliberate way and i appreciate those of you who complimented the board and and that action that was taken last summer if we've learned anything from the pandemic it's that the guidance changes often and a couple of you even mentioned that the cdc guidance changes regularly i can't make a recommendation to the school board until we have all of the information that's needed and time to collaborate with the professionals and our principals and the administrative team at our schools about those recommendations to determine what's best for our students and we know that additional information is going to come out in the coming weeks so this is the current snippets from the current executive order of the governors um and just to to kind of emphasize this what the governor

132has said is that through june 30th uh which in the state of indiana's eyes is the end of the 2021 20 20 21 school year through june 30th schools are required to continue to wear masks in their buildings and their facilities that's why we we still require masks in this building when we come to work every day the only exception to that is face coverings outside when our students or or staff are outside for different events that expires june 30th there is another provision provision in the governor's executive order that is specific to school buses and there there is no limitation on that one other than the governor's entire executive order expires june 30. so part of the unanswered questions that we have is what does this mean for school buses what does this what

133how might this guidance change as we talk about next school year and what what recommendations uh might exist so that we can make recommendations to the school board so the timeline that we have that i know everyone is very interested in is laid out and this hasn't changed since the communication that i shared with parents before the end of the school year we said at that point we'll share more information in july because we knew there were going to be so many changes and so many additional guidance coming out from the state so the reality is we've been out of school for just over two weeks and there are some important steps that need to take place for us to make a recommendation and so mid to late june we expect additional guidance for schools

134to come out from the state of indiana some guidance came out last week that was labeled preliminary so we want to see what's the next version of that guidance late june we know the governor's executive order will expire and he will most likely update it in some version by the end of the month we have collaboration already scheduled with the hendricks county health officer and other other hendricks county school districts we need to review the recommendations that we have received from the state and from our local authorities with our principles and decide what do those practically look like in our schools and that's where we will work in early july on finalizing those recommendations for the next school year to have those prepared for the school board at your july 12th uh meeting which was

135would which is when we would be bringing you a recommendation of here's the recommended protocols based on the feedback loop that we have heard and the guidance that we will continue to review of course then that next day we would want to be sure to communicate that with our parents and our staff as to what those guidelines will look like and all of that happening a full two weeks before school starts so that we know what whatever protocols are in place we have a time for parents to have conversations with their children about what those protocols will look like when they return to school so that is uh the timeline that we had laid out before the end of the school year and the timeline that we still feel is the most allows for the

136most thoughtful and deliberative approach to making what are clearly very tough decisions and decisions that there is no um clear agreement on other than every person you ask has a different opinion about it and that's what what is challenging about this situation but just as we did last summer we will take everything into account and make the best decision that we can that supports our students and their success in school and we just want to make sure that we have as much information at our disposal to bring you a recommendation in july and certainly glad to answer any questions from the board about that timeline or any information that's been shared thank you board members do you have any questions about that i'm happy to see the timeline so we see where we're going and

137our parents here so thank you for that okay thank you um i think for the sake of that we've been sitting here for two hours and five minutes let's board members let's take a quick break and we will reconvene in about five minutes thank you [Music] you okay we will reconvene the meeting at 9 00 12. and we'll move on to the next item which is the item indeed an approval of the memorandum of understanding with indiana online academy dr curtin uh yes that is the m-o-o-m-o-u excuse me that i referenced in our presentation uh just a few minutes ago and it is to allow us to partner with them to provide services for our seventh and twelfth graders to receive receive online virtual services will the teachers have any training on this yes and

138that is through cisc okay yes and they will manage teachers and have a there correctly okay so i recommend that the school trustees approve the mou with indiana online academy is presented second question by anita seconded by cindy is there any discussion all those in favor that motion passes five zeros thank you i'm sorry i said five so many times great yes textbook and material adoption doctor turkey and dr levine thank you i apologize if this was on our previous board agendas high school was working on a curve an additional career pathway so they needed one additional resource as a recommendation from avon high school assistant principal dustin mckinney family consumer science department teachers to purchase the curriculum and online support for use in avon high school family and community community consumer science classes okay

139so this was an item that was just admitted from the last section of the materials and the reason for that was because they had finished uh it was something unique for the high school the career pathway okay thank you all entertain emotion excuse me mr lamenda um what is in in this book that yeah it's really highly career of exploration okay thank you i moved that the board of school trustees approved the adoption of the ahs fac as textbook as presented second motion mike kim seconded by anita is there any uh additional discussion all those in favor the motion passes four zero thank you next item on the agenda is f dr sullivan please talk to us about the 2021-22 student textbook rental and fees last board meeting you've actually approved the textbook running fees

140and along the same lines of what dr lomazia said we continue to take a look at what we are charging middle schools high schools and intermediates and elementary schools and trying to find ways in which we can lower textbook rental fees for our parents we found a couple more than what dr will may just said one of which is at the middle school we were able to take off an arc charge that we were not actually using right now we changed the adoption cycle we actually also found a way in which um we could reduce what textbook rental fees would be for our parents by taking on in our education fund and increase from lobbying software so instead of the parents having to pay an extra three dollars the education fund took that off and

141one of the initiatives that both mrs alday and dr lemay have been making sure that they take a look at is how can we reduce textbook rental fees as much as possible so thank you we've been continuing to work on that and they found several things excellent thank you okay i hope that the board of school trustees approved the 2021 2022 textbook rental and fees for preschool through grades 12 as presented second a motion by anita seconded by ann is there any discussion all those in favor motion passes 4-0 uh thank you dr solomon appreciate it next item we're going to turn it over to ms ewing to discuss the approval of a resolution uh electing to join perth great remembrance you have a handout as well doctor wizard asked me to give kind of

142a two-minute summary of what this resolution is um and for your approval um and there is the resolution is a template from in first indiana public retirement system and so there's quite a bit of legalese in there so i will do my best to kind of summarize it in just a couple minutes and i appreciate um any feedback questions that that you may have um if i've missed anything and um this has been something since i started working at avon that um was charged with are we offering the best retirement benefit to our support staff are we are we using the best use of our dollars and doing so and it's been a project that we've worked on all year you can tell because mr carr created a beautiful new template um with our beautiful

143new logo and i have yet to use that so i apologize for that and but just to kind of get everybody on the same footing our current per benefit and so perth is the public employee retirement fund for our support staff teachers get turf support staff get perk and currently there on the left-hand side you can see basically broken down by the type of employee you are the benefit that you receive and right now for the most part everyone is receiving a similar benefit and that they um are required to participate if they are working more than 28.75 hours um it's a hybrid option that um and that's defined by in person that's the plan that they call it and it's an 11.2 contribution by the corporation and then the employee is then required to

144make their own contribution of three percent to that and then those working under that there's an optional um benefit well emperors have made some changes to the options that they offer and i'll come back to where and their resolution now is suggesting but what inverse has done and this is something they did for teachers on the turf side uh two years ago i believe and we are required to offer both options both the traditional hybrid which we are currently doing and a new my choice option and looking at our dollars and how we spend them and what's the best uses for our support stock we felt it important that we offer then we make a shift in that retirement plan for our support staff so whereas we're currently offering um the hybrid option which is

145that 11.4 contribution as a defined contribution account and a defined benefit where employees have to be with us for 10 years of service and to start seeing any of the benefits of that meet a minimum age requirement if they do they get a great retirement lifetime monthly retirement benefit from that however a lot of our support staff do not stay with us for that amount of service and so those funds simply stay within first neither the corporation nor the employee receives any benefit from those so the new my choice option um is more of a retirement savings plan with a more traditional vesting schedule that you might be familiar with where you can see they're about halfway down if you're with the corporation for a year you're 20 invested in the corporation funds and after

146five years you're 100 vested you can roll over the funds with that so it's it's a little bit different benefit but it's more accessible given our support staff and our retention with that and again this is a newer option that we've had available in comparing what other districts do and you'll see westerville and zionsville do not participate in prayer for their support staff and plainfield and brownsburg do participate in perth and currently they are making both that employee and employer contribution so we're a little behind um plainfield and brownsville currently because we are requiring our employees to make that three percent contribution so with all that information the new proposal benefit in the resolution that you have it makes a few shifts what we have asked in the resolution is that our 40-hour employees who

147are full-time employees and they will have either of those options so they can really choose which one works best for them um kind of what we're currently doing or that new my choice option um but in addition to that the corporation's gonna start making their three percent benefit so our current employees will automatically see an increase on their paycheck for that which is a huge benefit and then those moving forward hiring at 40 hours a week and we'll also see you know very significant retirement contribution for um for our employees and a recruitment tool i believe that we can use um then that middle group and you may have like why did you choose those numbers the state actually has some parameters that we have to abide by if an employee is working more than

148a thousand hours a year they have to participate in perv that is something that they've dictated for us and um somebody working 29 hours a week which is typically ours this are a lot of our classroom instructional assistant they work 1044 hours so by the state they are required to participate but what we're going to do now is shift them to make it for the my choice option which you'll remember is the it's the lesser contribution the 7.4 percent but it is a lesson lesser it's a five-year investing schedule on that so what we feel like is what happened is even somebody who's here two years will be forty percent invested as opposed to um you know you're not here ten years and you get zero dollars and then you'll see the optional um really

149the only change there that they'll ship from that hybrid to my choice option as well so kind of to summarize all of that i think the pros are that employees are going to have more choice in their retirement option at the full-time um level because they will have either that hybrid or that that new my choice option and full-time employees are going to get that employee contribution paid by the employer and that three percent um which we think can be a great recruiting tool as well the corporation is no longer going to see those contributions going into in person staying there because employees aren't staying 10 years with us and they're just staying in the fourth in the in person counts and we're staying competitive with leads schools and increasing that three percent benefit um

150admittedly that part-time employee um is now shifting from 11.2 to 7.4 but um in my opinions how it's better to get a percentage of the the my choice is seven point four percent than zero percent of the eleven if they're not here for those ten years that was really fast um a lot of numbers and i am still proclaimed not a numbers person um but uh hopefully that kind of summarize what what that new resolution looks like in the proposal moving forward we ask questions yeah yeah and i do just want to say before you do that to one thank mrs woodward for coming in and kind of talking this through with kristen and me a while ago to kind of give a board perspective an hr perspective on that can you also clarify kristin

151that this option would be for new people coming in versus kind of the um grandfathering of people that have already made a choice for retirement can you talk about it yes so so for current employees the full-time employees will start to see that that employer contribution um that they're currently making the three percent but the um they're all in the hybrid they're all in that plan right now and um that will not change they will stay in the plan that they're in and if you're a current employee and that's um you know there's there's pros and cons to that but really that is an inverse um requirement that they'd be granted and we couldn't make a change in that even if we wanted to so this would just be um shifting which plane you participate

152in would just be for new employees moving forward and it's something that the um again the certified staff and the state required that we offer these two options that offer the options um two years ago when they started so this is for new employees yes and then current employees can opt in if they want they can make that change no if you're a current employee you can't make a change to the plan that you're in okay well turn the current of the 40-hour a week current employees they will start having um avon make an additional three percent contribution that they're currently making on their themselves the corporation but in terms of which plan you choose and all of that if you're a current employee you can't make a change and that's their impulse guidelines on

153that would only be for new ones moving okay that's i just want to make sure i understood that and though that wouldn't it won't affect our current employees do we get any input from them on that is that something that they believe that our future employees would help be more of a driving tool to come and work for us yes we did yep and so i tried to i tried to reach out to a variety of different employee groups because it doesn't impact them all a little bit differently i'm trying to think um i had to i talked to chase and his sro because they are full-time employees and so he's like that feels great i'm going to get an additional you know three percent that contribution there so they were excited about that um

154i talked to some support staff at the building level and and um they also felt like it was a win because that offered um a little bit more flexibility uh with the point four percent and knowing they may or may not be here that full amount of time with that so saying hey you know i don't know if i'm gonna commit to being here for ten years if i know i'm gonna be here a few years and be able to get some of that that retirement back um that's a great deal for me so overall the feedback was uh was positive okay good thank you and could you just give a snippet of the overall comparison we did a little bit of discussion about what the impact to the school finance would be i did

155yeah and i debated about again i was trying to try to find that good balance between giving you enough information but not and this is something we've been working on for the last nine months trying to coordinate with our current um plan with what um mprs allows us to do um so what it what it boils down to is when you when you think about kind of that shift there is certainly going to be an increase in cost because we're adding an additional three percent contribution that we're making to full-time staff yes but the offset of that is the a little over four percent um that we because we're shifting from 11.4 to 7.2 for the part-time staff so we're shifting that four percent so the the cost differential it's really a little over it's

156old dad i mean because we looked at 2018 2019 and 2020 if we had done this model for those years what would our first contributions look like um and it was just a little over a hundred thousand dollars in savings each year when you kind of make that shift in um contribution announced so so and i think you know mrs woodward as you and i as we had talked about this the goal wasn't necessarily to make a huge cost savings to the corporation it was to better use the dollars that we were spending uh to have a little bit of a savings um uh potentially as we do this is a win to that right right i think it is important to note that on hybrid because it is cliff vested at 10 years if

157an employee is with us for nine years and 11 months and they leave we get zero back we get no money back and they get it and they get yeah so that money is just going into the per fund um and we get no benefit to that and clearly i see though retention is an issue that we want that everybody is facing but it's um it certainly is something that if someone does choose to leave us that with this incremental vesting schedule at least they get some benefit of that contribution i don't love sharing this statistic and you know you um but we look back kind of since 2014 and roughly um 11 of our current population have been here more than 10 years so i would like to see that number way higher it's

158not something i'm you know super thrilled to share but at the same time i think that like this that kind of points to so we're putting in you know for 100 of our employees right now we're putting in this money into a retirement account that they need to be here for 10 years and right now about our 11 percent of our support to that population has been here for more than 10 years so let's make our money work a little smarter for us thank you other questions board members if not then i'll entertain a motion on the approval i move that the board of school trustees approved the resolution electing to join perth as president and authorize the superintendent to execute this necessary documents specifically motioned by cindy seconded by anita is there any uh

159discussion although it's in favor motion passes four zero thank you kristen very much yeah you know much better use of those funds and it just works smarter you know and that's just that's what we need to do so thank you and it helps our employees which we want to give them any benefit possible so thank you yes thank you next item on the agenda is h which is the approval of the contract with rollins group dr sullivan dan rollins has worked with avon community before previous build projects i think most recently he worked as an employee of k2m designs before he started his own rawlings group he was the one who helped with the maple and white oak projects last friday dan myself and our legal representatives from cch revised this contract to make sure

160that avon schools is receiving the best service possible from dan as we issue potential debt and board members just a reminder that mr rollins is an independent contractor and that he would prepare information for us to be ready to have a competitive bid should we proceed with our building project so we're under no obligation to proceed with him um just by virtue of the fact that he'll do the study i move that the board of school trustees approved the agreement with the rollins group llc and authorized the assistant superintendent to finalize the agreement pending legal review second most of my city second and my anne any discussion all those in favor she passes 4-0 we're happy to have him on board again to help us through this item is the appointment of the technical review

161committee dr sullivan as part of working on the project again dan is going to be part of a technical review committee on that committee will be uh dan myself mike rollins mike moore and an engineer it's the same engineer actually who worked with us on the projects of mabel again and white oak and that committee's first meeting uh will be on the 17th okay some of the board school trustees approve the technical review committee members as presented second motion by anita second invite and any discussion will this uh committee keep the board up to date definitely okay definitely and this will be the committee that will kind of vet any potential contractors okay that are his are interested in being a part of our project thank you and that is certainly something that if a

162board member wanted to attend any of those meetings okay thank you now that process has served us well with our previous projects and so um thank you for putting this together against the committee you know just really kind of is that outside looking in and not necessarily so deep into it and it seems like they've always proven to be a good benefit to us okay the uh motion has been moved and seconded all those in favor ocean passes 4-0 thank you item j is the resolution to transfer funds dr sullivan uh this of course is a resolution that will allow our treasurer to transfer funds between accounts to cover necessary expenditures i move that the board of school trustees approved the resolution to transfer funds as presented second question by kim seconded by anita is

163there any discussion just a reminder that at the end of the year this gets settled up and that fund gets paid back right and it's a not to exceed 18 000 yes it's got a lot of bound you know parameters on it so true all those in favor motion passes four zero thank you okay item k is the first reading of the section 1000 board policy updates dr windham some light reading that uh you have had over the last couple of weeks as the board knows when we moved to the isba the school boards association platform for board policies we really have been using them for new policies but we really just took the old neola policies and just moved them over into isba and so miss nelson has been doing a great job navigating

164old versions and new versions and we engaged julie slavins at isba to say okay look at our old neola policies and review them and give some recommendations as to how they could uh be adjusted to match isba guidance and so we tried a couple of things to chunk this in sections so tonight we were just bringing the 1000s to not bite off too much uh at one time and and you could see most of the changes that were recommended here were um not repeating things that are already specified in indiana law which neola did all the time so if it's in indiana law we know we have to follow that and we don't need a board policy to tell us to follow it and so most of the re the deletions from the policy were

165because julie an attorney knows that that is reflected in indiana law she also went through and made sure that if it was repetitive if it was listed in one policy we weren't also repeating it in another policy that's where you run into sometimes because your policies don't always match up so she really looked to make sure that's already been addressed it doesn't need to be addressed again so you have before you the recommend recommendations of both revisions two policies as well as the deletion of several policies because the entire policy was repetitive of what is reflected in indiana law or it had been moved to another section of the policy manual and so we are recommending uh the adoption of the one thousands updates and the recommended deletions of policies uh for first reading i've

166been the board of school trustees approved the updated policy section 1000 um upon first reading as presented and repealed policy zero one zero zero zero one one two zero one three zero one five zero one two one zero one three one point two zero one three two point two zero three three i'm sorry sorry zero one three three zero one four one zero one four two point one zero one four four point four zero one five one point one zero one five two zero one five four zero one six one zero one six two zero one six three zero one six four point two zero one six four point three zero one six five point four zero one six six point one zero one six eight point two zero one seven one point two zero

167one seven one point three and zero one seven four okay uh most of my and segmented by anita uh any discussion i like the simplicity of what this has to offer because i do feel that in some situations our board governance documents are mired in that repetitive that doesn't make them very clear and concise so um and as we all know we were not enchanted with it neola at all and i believe that isba offers a much better solution for us for board policy clarification so thank you for engaging them doing this um all those in favor okay motion passes four zero on the first um reading of section one thousand thank you um item alice the first reading of revised board policy 3430.01 dr windham yes and again thank you to miss ewing well

168this is in the 3000s section uh so we we're not going to make these updates until a little bit later this policy our fmla policy uh does require that we give some notice to employees and so ms ewing suggested that it would be good to go ahead and make this update now so that when we do our beginning of school notices to our staff this has been updated again much of what was removed here was removed because it's repetitive with federal law that governs fmla and then it also seeks to just make some some of our practices consistent with what the policy reflects and so i appreciate miss ewing and the hr department kind of looking this over and giving it uh their perspective because they are ultimately the ones that our staff reach out

169to when they have leave questions and so we are also recommending this for your approval and first reading so many times too the staff doesn't know what i can do and what i can't do especially when you have to take a sick leave and do i use my sickly days and and you know like that i was in that situation and uh it was explained very well to me so thank you for that too so that the employees know where they're coming from on this day and that day good night congratulations our benefits coordinator and she has really kind of been instrumental in reviewing the policy making sure it's being implemented correctly and communicated well thank you that the board of school trustees approved the device board policy three four three zero point zero one

170a phone first reading is presented second motion my anita seconded by kim is there any discussion all those in favor that motion passes four zero thank you item m is the um 2021 nope sorry 2022 2023 crazy school calendar doctor it's hard to even say those years isn't it yeah yes you have before you the recommendations of uh the school calendar for 22 23 it is basically identical to next year's calendar so you'll notice the three teacher work days that are at the beginning of school um that is consistent with what we will be doing this year the three-day thanksgiving break martin luther king day being a vacation day which is also consistent with this calendar i appreciate dr trahoon he does most of the legwork on our school calendar and works very closely with

171our teachers union and presents some different options to the teachers union to get their input on so they have been very helpful in crafting this as well and we recommend it for your approval i hope that the board of school trustees approved the school calendar for the 2022-2023 that's presented second question by anita second in my aunt is there any discussion the only question i have is the last day of school is may 26th so is that also commencement on the calendar it's not marked i do not 180 days of instruction end 26 that's why okay yeah yeah and that's on thursday that's a friend [Music] so once this is approved then we'll work with mr shockley and get that so it could feasibly end on the 26th because it satisfies the state's requirement of

172180 days of instruction that knife is a lot of stress right it probably would not be that easy all right so that's a pretty i have a quick too none of the holidays are going to be used for a makeup day correct they're going to be tacked on at the end president's day president's day that's going to be your makeup but none of those i know the biggies not but yeah just president would be as a makeup that's correct thank you well that's nice because that's in february so yeah but then you you kind of have an idea of what your winter is going to be like you know if we have to have too many e-learning i can't use those too right okay uh the motion has been moved and second and all those

173in favor that motion passes four zero thank you uh item eight is other is there anything else to add to the agenda if not then we'll move on to board member items mrs ecklehart well it was a great evening as usual it was so fun so great to honor our valedictorian our salutatorian um our national champion we should have played that you know queen song you on the um the all a student just to stellar young men and women who are going to go out into the world and do great things and i'm so proud of them um graduation was excellent it was so well organized and it was so avon we had a two window two hour window of rain we got it in and literally walked into the car and it was started

174to pour it's just so a1 but um but graduation was so well done and so kudos to the high school staff i know it is very challenging to graduate 800 students and and what i was so grateful for is up until the end they were trying to maximize capacity and you know they kept incrementing how many family members they could bring and so it was just really nice that they just said no we're just leaving it too but they really wanted to make it as special as possible so i thought it was a great night um i appreciate so much the update on security again i think it's just so important that our students come to school and our staff come to work and they feel safe and they know we're that's the front of

175our minds that um we've got the training we're doing everything possible for everyone to feel safe when they're in our buildings and so i just really appreciate keeping that on the forefront of our of our of our thinking and our strategies um i really like the new brand it's that turned out really great thank you mr clark for the it looks great on everything if you know it's so crisp and clear and easy to see and i just thank you so much for all your work on that so thank you for letting us have a little input on it and so it looks great um thank you to aef for their support on an audience you know three dollars a student that's that's pretty happy at the high school so thank you to them for

176taking that on and really supporting them um we had a great donation report um never want to take those from for granted and we have such kind generous community members and just want to say thank you to them for that and last but not least um just appreciate the parents sharing their perspective on the mask and the and just all the um all the concerns and all the items we have to think about as we you know navigate i mean i feel like we're constantly navigating 2020 even though it's 2021 but we're constantly having to navigate through all that and so you know just like last year we took lots of input on opening school and it went very well i truly believe we will put together the right dynamic for our students and staff

177so i just appreciate the input because it's always it's just you know it's just so vital and it's essential so thank you thank you uh yeah what an honor to have five students go all the way through and end up with all a's congratulations to those five and also to the salutatorium and the valedictorian jacob mills and alicia stockel i guess the sky is the limit for those and also congratulations to the national champion and i'm not going to go any further with that but what an honor yvonne has really go out all the way and it's always an honor to uh congratulate him on that you i too would like to congratulate our seniors um they did wonderful i was so proud of them at graduation the whole senior class they were respectful they

178listened they watched and they were a good group i too would like to thank the donors for their generosity and support for all the avon schools again thank you mrs swain bayless and chief lydae for continuing to keep students and staff safe within their schools thank you for that [Music] i appreciate being updated about safety uh measures that are going on in the school and i know the teachers appreciate it too and the flip chart is that new this year or not okay they always keep it by their phone door at the yes um it's hard it's just you know hard to imagine having to do all that for safety but you got to do what you got to do one thing that wasn't mentioned but i thought was awesome in our notes that when

179we purchased some new books we went to pick them up i'm not sure who it was but they say the school system five thousand sixty dollars to go pick them up and have instead of having them having been shipped here and that's gonna help with as dr sullivan said with the book rental cost so yay for that it's unbelievable that the school calendars 2022 2023 have been decided unbelievable summer activities are in full swing for families enjoy these summer months and finally congratulations tada to dr terhune for being selected as greenwood's new superintendent i thought it was really cool that they said that you were homeboy and that you were the first one ever to be named that so that's an honor right there you are going to definitely be missed here and i'm going

180to miss your pretty ties too yeah all right we're going to have one time all right well you're going to change those colors for you soon aren't you yeah well you are definitely going to be missed and i wish you luck and you're going to be an awesome superintendent for that school system thank you for all you've done thank you yeah i'll start out with congratulations to you although um it's bittersweet because you know as we all feel and cindy has mentioned your contribution to avon has been significant um when you first came to us with your credentials as i recall them at eminence and then at martinsville and then when you came here i thought boy you know that's those school districts are a lot different than avon i wonder what what terry will

181bring well the answer to that is a tremendous amount um just your ability to uh wade through um with teachers and administrators to really get to the heart of the matter has proven time and time again to be just to our benefit you tell those greenwood people i'm tired of training superintendents and they introduced me they mentioned that you had shared that okay and we're done [Music] um but greenwood is not too far away for us to call on you and i look forward to seeing you professionally at school board functions and superintendent functions and certainly well deserved and i wish you all the best right in your new position thank you you will be severely missed that is for sure um i also want to thank um deb swain bayless and um chief lydae

182and all the officers that came to present on safety that is that is one of the things that um i really try hard to keep up on as much as possible because um it isn't it a blessing to us to have all of that hanging out underneath the surface and really not having to call on or use those officers in a major way in our school corporation that just speaks to the foundational element of safety that's been built in our schools and so thank you so much for a great presentation good summary but more than anything else as i've already said for your heart for children and their safety is that's what really makes the difference i want to thank as i've already done already everyone who came tonight for public comment um as i've

183said we've done our work sometimes without any public here and it feels like we really crave that input and the uh information i know that must feel to a public like the school board is intimate with every single detail that goes on in the day-in day-out operation of the school corporation and that is just not true i mean we serve as a governing board um i for one have a full-time job so i can't really be involved in every single thing but ours ours is a role of governance and a decision making and so i i really appreciate when um our users of our school corporation are present in our public meetings and can give us input that we otherwise would not have i respect our administrators an awful awful lot and our school building

184administrators a tremendous amount but even they cannot even give us all the information that we need to know in order to sometimes make adequate and thorough decisions for our school corporation nor would they always give us that information um without a because that is not their perspective potentially so i just want uh to say thank you thanks for an awfully long night but um i do appreciate that we get people who will come and give us their thoughts and sentiments because that is what makes us a better school corporation in general um i also want to comment on um graduation i thought it was awesome i love being outside in our own environment i just i love it i know that the weather was not cooperative there were several children in the front row that

185i thought were going into hypothermia because it how cold it was um but i really think that um our students appreciate being in their own domain in order to say goodbye to avon so i love that uh the last thing i'll leave you with is that i you know as many of you or all of you know i serve on the indiana school board association board as well and i had an opportunity to sit with dr kristen jenner who is the indiana education lead head of education in indiana just recently and i happened to mention to her the white oak renovation for preschool and she not only was excited but she said i am coming to visit avon because i want to see what early learning really can do to transform a school corporation and

186she said you realize that you are at the forefront of this by really paying this much attention to both developmental preschool and non-developmental preschool and so i'm happy to announce that she has contacted me and she wants to come and talk with us as board members and also to tour those facilities i told her it wasn't much to look at yet um but that eventually we would love to do that and she wants to really showcase that to the rest of indiana as a best in practice for um for early education so i was pleased very pleased to be able to represent avon and none and get her buy-in just to see that that is all i have dr windham do you have any items i will just say um i want to congratulate dr

187trahoon and i have really appreciated working with him especially this last school year as uh as a new superintendent i am thrilled he gets to serve in greenwood where he grew up graduated and raised his family and even though he's only been here two years i was just quickly rattling off smoothest redistricting any of us ever remember reconfigured the curriculum team to better support student learning helped us navigate covid help lead the redesign of our k-4 buildings and innovation centers and bringing more consistency in our programming beginning to study how we expand avon high school and support the 21st century needs of our our learners there from a curriculum instruction standpoint and that's just in two years so i really appreciate your leadership and i'm excited to see all the great things that happen in

188greenwood so congratulations thank you thanks what what what parting advice do you have keep doing what you're doing we are doing really great things here uh i i'm very proud of all the accomplishments that's taken place just in the short time i've been here um i really appreciate the relationships that i've developed uh everybody in this room i appreciate everything just talking with you all joking with you all popping in your rooms i will call you probably for hr advice periodically if you don't mind um i've enjoyed our conversations and our debates and it's helped me grow there but i think our curriculum group is in a really good place right now and and i you know kudos a great hire this january with missus all day and i think she and dustin will will

189do great things with dr sullivan kind of jumping in and dr dr windham we are in a really good place right now i feel like it and uh i hate to leave but also it's it's i think i said it's probably the one job i would leave for i really intended to kind of stay here and just you know work throughout five or ten years and be done and and uh but i think i'll go there and work for five or ten years hopefully it'll be done so uh but it was one place i truly uh i've always wanted to work my entire life and i get the opportunity now so uh and we're in good hands i will say scott has become a good friend of mine and um we were next door neighbors

190for about a year or so and now two doors down but uh i will miss the times just popping in and saying hey what do you think about this or hey this is going on and let's talk this through really quick those conversations have done a lot to me and i think avon is in really good hands with his leadership so you all are very lucky and uh and hang on to him so thank you thank you all very much thank you absolving i too would like to say congratulations to terry um been a great opportunity to be next door somebody who i think knows a lot about what should be done in the school district and it's quick to impart it with people so i appreciate that um shout out to jason for camera

191work today i had about three or four texts of people saying they were watching us with their popcorn and seeing what's going on but i'm very appreciative of everybody in this room it's great to work closely with deb kristen every day and jason and to see them present and talk about uh what we're doing and how it's making us a better district i always feel like you have some small part in that so i just appreciate that the way in which we're going and the people who we're going with so i appreciate it everything that's doing on the back just just thank you thank you uh we will adjourn at 9 59. thank you everyone my husband's birthday
