001Yeah. Welcome to the BCSC board meeting this evening. Um This evening we will uh begin the meeting with a moment of silence. Dr. Phillips. Thank you, Mr. Stinner. Some of you may be aware that last week uh we lost an employee BCSC. Uh she'd been with us for about 3 years as a teaching assistant at Parkside working with special education students. She was a mother of three including a newborn son. She passed away unexpectedly last week. So, if you would please join me in a moment of silence for her uh and her friends, colleagues, and family. Thank you all. Thank you, Mr. Stinner. Hayley Mull was the teaching assistant's name. Um and we are Our thoughts and prayers are with her and her family tonight. Thank you, Dr. Phillips. Uh if you are able, please
002stand. Join me in the Pledge of Allegiance. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Thanks to all of you for attending the meeting this evening. Thanks to the folks that are joining us online. Um first order of business uh will be to call the roll and take attendance. Mr. Schultz? Present. Mr. Glick? Here. Ms. Lloyd? Present. Mr. Stinner is here. Mr. Nowlin? Here. Ms. Wheeldon? Here. And Mr. Major? Hello. Thank you. We do we a quorum. In fact, all of the board members are here. Uh Uh Dr. Phillips usually start the meetings by reminding us of our mission, vision, and goals. Thank you, Mr. Stinner. Our vision at BCSE is to
003be the choice to learn, work, and play. We're going to see some evidence of that this evening. Um I think in all three ways, learn, work, and play. Um our mission is to develop expert learners by partnering with our community to invest in people. And that our And our core beliefs are that we all can rise to the challenge of high expectations. That learning is most effective when we have choice, flexibility, and see relevance. That we thrive when our physical, social, and psychological needs are met. That our community and school district are stronger when we partner with one another. That we flourish because of the diversity and variability in our community. And that our democracy and democratic institution are strengthened by civic-minded citizens. Thank you, Dr. Phillips. It's our tradition to begin meetings with celebrations
004of achievements and accomplishments. Uh Dr. Phillips. Thank you. It is uh my pleasure and honor to call on Mr. David Miller, athletic director of Columbus East High School, who uh looks like we'll start with >> [clears throat] >> uh our most recent from Saturday's uh state boys swimming medalist, Mr. Josh Pinney. Thank you, Dr. Phillips and uh school board for recognizing um our two athletic programs tonight. Um really my job as athletic director tonight is I get to brag on our coaches a little bit. Um and I'm going to talk about Coach Trueblood and his staff and and Coach Cooper and his staff together tonight. And and one thing among many many things that they do very well is they do a great job of having our student athletes doing their best, performing their best
005at tournament time. Um and that's tough to do. Seasons are long, offseasons are long, pre-seasons are long. Um keeping kids hungry every single day getting that 1% better every single day is is is not easy. And and they've done a great job of getting our student athletes performing at their best come tournament time. And that was evident this year. Um if you look at the wrestling program, uh dominant performance in sectional and regional, uh competed very well in semi-state against a a very tough semi-state. Um and then obviously having six um guys qualify for state. Um and and swimming's the exact same. Uh not just Josh, but the swim team did a great job in sectional. A lot of guys um PRing in sectional. Um and then Josh breaking school records in sectional and at
006the state meet. So, that's really a testament to the job that Coach Cooper, Coach Trueblood, and their staffs do to get our kids um prepared and ready to go for the state tournament. Um I'm going to turn you over to Coach Trueblood. Thank you, sir. Hello. Uh appreciate the opportunity here to recognize Josh and his achievement. I think the first swimmer of an individual event since 2015, I believe, to medal in swimming. Uh we've had relays, but uh and this is the first Columbus East person to medal uh in the state meet for uh I mean, it might be since '84. I'm not exactly sure. So, a great accomplishment for Josh. And and Josh has worked his tail off all season. He works in the off season. He has high aspirations to to swim. He
007is only a sophomore. So, he still has a lot of time to continue to improve. Um the work that he has done with roughly 11 practices a week um during the school year, that is six mornings and five nights a week. Just to give you an example of of the dedication that these kids have and I know the wrestling program is very similar. So, we don't take these things lightly. But the the biggest thing for Josh I think is he exhibits and portrays what the Columbus East administration and athletic department have been striving for and that is the athletic department. We want to make our athletes as successful as they can and build them as athletes, but we're trying to build them as people. And to be good people that bring and elevate others around
008them up. And Josh had a small team this year, did not have the group of of kids to help push him that we had last year as far as a larger team and and a definitely a little bit more experienced team. But this group of seven we were able to finish I think fifth in the sectional with we were the highest team with seven kids in both our conference and our sectionals and and that is due to Josh's ability to not only be the best that he could be, but to bring his teammates along with him. And I think Dr. Parsons tries to drive that within our school as far as being good people helping those around you because athletics is not going to necessarily last. We get old, right? I mean, I I feel
009old every day, but athletics aren't going to be there every day until you're in. But your ability to raise the people around you and the team around you. And I mean, I look at the school board, right? You all have to raise each other up and hold each other accountable, right? So, I'm very proud of what Josh does and how he does it on a day-to-day basis. And we do that the same way as our athletic department with 24 teams and one one athletic department, right? And I think Josh exhibits that. So, I'm very very proud of that. Thanks. >> [laughter] [laughter] [applause] >> Next, we will have two members of the wrestling team, Caleb and Talon, come up and say a few words about wrestling. Uh so, I'm going to speak a little bit
010on our junior class this year. Um starting with Lincoln Cooper, he got third in the state, a season record of 41 and three, and those three losses came twice to the state champion, once to the state runner-up, who he He beat earlier in the season. He is a conference champ, sectional champ, and regional champ this season and academic all-state first team. Cole McMahon also got third in the state with a season record of 39 and 6. He is a conference champ and a regional champ. He's also academic all-state second team. Uh [snorts] Clayton Miller, he got fifth in the state with a uh season record of 37 and 8. He avenged two losses at the state finals from earlier in the season. He is a conference champ and sectional champ. He weighed in at 185
011wrestling 215 all season. And Hank the Tank Redman was eighth in the state this year with a season record of 37 and 9. Weighing in at around 205 all season wrestling 285. He is a uh conference champ, sectional champ, and regional champ and academic all-state first team member. And now Town Justis will speak on seniors. All right, I'm going to I'm going to brag on our senior class and our team a little bit. Um First one I've got uh Caleb Kirkpatrick. He got seventh uh this this season at state. Uh he was 38 and 8. He had 112 career wins, which is 17th uh all time, and he was a conference and sectional champ this year. And then I've got Caleb Cooper. He's a state qualifier for us. Uh his season record was 34 and
0127. He had 117 career wins, which is 13th all time. Uh he was a conference, sectional, and regional champ avenging a avenging a tough loss last year. Uh and he was a two-time academic all-state first team. Uh and at East, especially in our wrestling program, we really drive uh our team first motto, so I'd like to like to brag on that. Uh we got we have eight academic all-state selections this year. We got eighth uh as a as a team in the state tournament. Uh we got fourth uh in 3A state duels, which I think we've got top four in the past 6 years in a row. Uh we were conference team champs with a school record of eight individual champs. We had six state qualifiers this year, which is the second most in school
013history. We had five state placers, which is the second most in school history. And next year we'll have four return returning state placers, which is the most in school history. Thanks. >> [laughter] >> Which one's Hank the Tank? Okay. Congratulations, guys. Thanks for representing us. >> [applause] >> Congratulations to the student athletes. Are Do we have parents here? I assume tonight. Parents, could you raise your hands? We thank YOU SO MUCH FOR WHAT YOU'VE DONE FOR THESE students and these athletes and the coaches. We appreciate it. Congratulations on the achievement. Mr. Stinner, I'm pretty sure that these parents disagree with Mr. Miller that it was difficult to keep these kids hungry this year during the season. Pretty easy to keep them hungry, right? The next item on our agenda, number three, school board member reports.
014Uh I'll start off. I've got a couple. Um Item 3B tonight. Um We've got first reading on a draft policy. Policy D525 is the name it's been given regarding school employee injury reporting. Uh Dr. Phillips, that's been posted. The appropriate notice has been given. Director, according to the board policy on passing policies, we need to post uh any proposed policy 2 weeks prior to the first reading, and that was done 2 weeks prior tonight to tonight. Um And so, it's been posted since that time. Um Next steps would be for the board, according to our policy, for the board to determine if anyone wishes to schedule a work session on this topic uh between now and the second reading. Thank you, Dr. Phillips. Uh we sometimes we have uh work sessions on policies, sometimes we
015don't. What's the board's pleasure on this one? I would like to have a work session on this policy. If there's no objection, Dr. Phillips, could you schedule a work session for us on this policy? We'll get that done. Great. Uh I was able to attend the business advisory group meeting uh last Friday morning uh led by Mr. Edwards and uh attended by a number of uh business leaders in the community. Uh the majority of the meeting had to do with uh early childhood programs, pre-K programs here at BCSC. There have been a number of funding cuts that are impacting those programs this year. I think we had some grant funds from a couple of uh uh major contributors that helped us continue the program this year. Um but the leaders of the program are trying
016to uh and use this meeting as an opportunity to try to develop marketing plans uh that will focus on the positives of pre-K and uh see if we can get the attendance up where it needs to be so that the programs um wouldn't need to be cut. Uh also discussed was the graduation rate, the recent improvement in that, how we'll sustain the improvement, and uh in particular with the new state graduation requirements that are coming online in 2029, how will we keep that work going? Um, other board members with reports, Ms. Lloyd? Good evening. Uh, just a few updates from the School Foundation. The South Asian Gala, uh, which helps provide funding for, um, STEM programming in BCSC is going to be held Saturday, April 11th at The Commons. Uh, tickets are now on sale
017at southasiangala.com. Um, another really important and exciting part of this event is that BCSC STEM students and teachers are acknowledged and celebrated for their efforts in the field. Um, those are awarded through nominations. So, the foundation is gathering nominations right now. So, if you know of a student who's really excelling in STEM or a teacher who's incredibly passionate about this, please nominate them. It's a really wonderful night and a great time to celebrate, um, their work. Uh, another event upcoming, uh, which is important to, uh, my predecessor, uh, the good, better, best 5K run and out of the box award, um, will be held April 25th. So, Todd Grimes is involved in that, um, and it's just a wonderful event as well and celebrates one of our educators. So, April 25th, save the date. And
018we are gearing up for spring grants soon. So, those will that information will be heading to teachers, which is, um, the reason we do all of this. So, that's exciting. Um, the last announcement is just for Council for Youth Development. Um, you may have seen online that 17, uh, Bartholomew County Youth Ambassadors and Echo Teen Council members visited the State House on Friday the 25th for Voice Advocacy Day. If you are not familiar with Voice, it's Indiana's statewide youth empowerment brand, uh, dedicated to engaging, educating, and empowering teens to take a stand and promote a tobacco-free lifestyle. So, pretty great of our kids. Oh, they met with, [clears throat] uh, Mr. Lauer and discussed the importance of schools adopting safe vape disposal boxes and prioritizing rehabilitative approaches over punitive consequences. So, kudos to the kids
019for using their voice. Thank you, Ms. Lloyd. Mr. Glick. I'm going to talk about redistricting and, uh, we will have three public discussions coming up next April or this in April coming up. Uh, first one will be April 7th at Columbus East in room C110. The next one will be April 9th at North in the cafeteria. And then the last one will be April 21st at Westside Community Church. All three of those will be at 6:30 and it's kind of open discussion to kind of talk about where we're going to go as a corporation and our our focus on redistricting cuz we've not had uh, redistricting of this size and capacity uh, in quite some time. And so with the opening of a new elementary school, it's going to change some things up. And so
020we just want to be able to open it up to public and hear some things and talk through things and, uh, hopefully we get a lot of people to to participate so we get a lot of feedback. The next one is the wellness, uh, council. The big piece out of this is BCSE will participate in the Indiana Youth Survey next month as well. Uh, this is for all 6th through 12th graders. And this is a opt-out survey. So, all students will take it unless parents or guardians opt out, which you should get a, uh, notification or letter sent home, uh, to uh, give the consent to opt out of that. Um, and I know that Northside has already sent out, I got it today actually, the notification for that. Um, and if you have any
021questions, contact your school office for any further information. The next redistrict district and facilities meeting will be March 26th and the next wellness council will meet on April 14th here. Mr. Glenn. Mr. Schulz. Nothing to report on my end. Thank you. Mr. Nolan. The um IU Columbus advisory board met on February 11th. Most of the meeting centered around the relatively new athletic programs and its impact on IU Columbus enrollment and also its financial impact on the Columbus community. There was also um they they also mentioned the increased programming around secondary certification program which we definitely benefit from here. And for my legislative liaison report um Ms. Lloyd and I attended on February 17th Indiana School Board Association State House Day. We got a summary of a lot of legislation that at that time was was
022pending. And Representative Lower met with us for lunch and we had a conversation about not just this year's legislation but looking forward the next few years. Um in terms of education's impact on on I mean in the terms of the legislature's impact on education. One of our our first request for him was fewer bills but we'll see how that goes. And the one bill I want to report on um probably the one that's going to be the biggest topic down the road maybe. Senate Bill 78 is the bell to bell ban on cell phones. Um I did have the opportunity to talk with the author of that bill during that day and I specifically posed the question. I said, we have open campus lunch for our 10th through 12th graders. Has there been discussion on
023how this bill would impact that or how it coordinates with that? And And his reply was um what's open campus lunch? And so so we will see. I'm sure there'll be policies coming down the road, but we'll get more directive from the Department of Education in terms of what that might look like detailed. Thank you, Mr. Nowlin and Mr. Major. Yeah, redevelopment met. Uh they talked about their annual report that was submitted to the city council. They also talked about a grant that was for the animal care services building. I mentioned that before. Um but this was they're actually coming in with the plan now. Uh there was a liquor license for Forge on Fourth and ribbon cuttings for Arcadia Drive on May 20th and the riverfront for October 23rd. There was no new news
024from the Health Trust. Riverfront on October? Yep. Um Ms. Wheeldon. Uh the Diversity Council met on February 18th. Um there were several topics of conversation covered. One of them was just reviewing the student actions um around the country on ICE and trying to think through and understand if if something like that were to happen here, what would the response be and and just familiarizing ourselves with with what students are doing across the country. Um and then the second topic was reviewing the graduation rate data that we all got to see um earlier this year. Um the Diversity Council includes a very broad cross-section of people in the community um and just getting their input on how we're performing, feedback, etc. Thank you, Ms. Wheeldon. Uh Dr. Phillips, you've got two items under cabinet reports this
025evening. Thank you, Mr. Stinner. The first item is just a very brief review of the operating referendum survey results. Uh the board held a work session at 5:00 p.m. this evening. Lasted about 35 minutes. Some of you in the room were there for that. Uh the brief summary of that is we had about 4,500 respondents. Um the rough estimates based on the company that administered the survey and uh tabulated the results for us is there's approximately 63 .3% um positive support for renewing the operating referendum at an average of $9.5 million per year, which is about a million dollars less than what we collected this year. Uh and then really not any consensus around any of the three um additional investment items that were included on the survey as we asked the community if they
026wanted to invest additional dollars in any of the additional areas including STEM, safety and security, and early childhood education. And you can see there that uh the there was no majority uh support for any dollar amount $1 million to $4 million on the screen. And then the summary is that um there's certainly enough support. The company that administered the survey stated that with the one other exception, all the other surveys they've been doing for school districts with this same topic had been around uh 50/50 um in in responses for support as well as uh on 50% supportive and 50% probably not supportive. And so the 63% says that yes, overwhelmingly a little bit more than what uh the referendum passed by in 2020, folks still say that's the case today. And I think as we
027mentioned during the uh during the work session, it's probably because our um operating referendum is continuing to invest in existing programs that have shown um positive results for our community, for our kids, uh as opposed to a district that might be putting forward a new referendum, uh but we're thankful for that. I know you had opportunities to ask questions during the uh during the work session at 5:00, but any other comments or questions on the operating referendum survey results? I Before Before I go with that, I would I want to remind everyone that as of right now, anyway, our timeline will be we the board would have to act at the June board meeting, and I believe that's June 17th. I could be wrong. I just wrote down June, but in our June board meeting,
028they'll be back in this room, uh is when the last time the board would need to act to put the question on the ballot in November. And our intention is to work with the board, as well as internally, to make a recommendation during our April board meeting, which will be at Columbus North, uh during that April. So, we would make a recommendation in April, um giving the board 2 months then to discuss and consider before putting the uh the question on the ballot. If there is a referendum, that would be in the November election. Correct. November 3rd would be the election date. Thank you. Uh this is a second reading on the three board policies that were recommended uh by Church, Churchill, and Antrim that we update based on either case law and or uh
029legislation. Those are C525 medical needs at school, D300 alcohol and controlled substance policy for those employees with CDLs and safety sensitive positions in our district, as well as purchasing procedures. All of these are clarifications and or corrections for consistency purposes. We did post this 2 weeks prior to the last board meeting and then did a first meeting. So, these will be on a second reading tonight on approval. Happy to also answer any questions or comments on these policies. Um I I missed the last board meeting and caught up, but I did have a question I wanted to ask for clarification on D300. Um I I believe it says that there's a list of things that employees shall um do. One of them is no employee shall refuse to take a drug screen. Um but what
030if they do refuse? I used to work in an area where this was brought up. I didn't I just wanted to clarify, do we have like an insubordination policy or something that would allow us to take employment position with a person who would refuse to take a drug screen? We would certainly look at that refusal through our other policies and procedures we have in place for insubordination. Any other questions? >> Um I just want to clarify that it's only employees with for a CDL and safety sensitive positions cannot refuse a drug screen. Other employees not under that category, for example teaching staff, that would not apply to. Is that correct? Dr. Stallbaum and Thank you for the clarifications. Any other questions? We've concluded the recognitions and the report outs for this meeting as we transition
031to action items. Um, we always allow the opportunity for public comments before the board makes decisions. Um Members of the public can speak for up to 3 minutes. Uh, we did not have anyone sign up to speak this evening. Uh, speakers uh, when you enter the room at the table by the door or at North High School, it will be by the door to the cafeteria. There will be a blue sheet that looks like this and this is how we gather the names of those folks that wish to speak at a board meeting. Um We can move on, I think, to item number six, old business. Thank you. At this time, I request approval of item 6A, the minutes of the Reedsburg School Board meeting from February 2nd. We've heard the recommendation. Is there a
032motion? >> [clears throat] >> Motion to approve item 6A as presented tonight. Second. Who, I'm sorry. Mr. Nollan, did you second? Thank you. It's been moved and seconded. Uh, do we have any discussion, any questions? We can move on to a vote. Uh, all in favor of approval as recommended by administration, please say aye. Aye. >> Aye. Any opposed, same sign. Thank you very much, Dr. Phillips. We ready to go to number seven? >> [cough and clears throat] >> Oh, thank you. Uh, we did start doing roll call and I will do that. Uh That's that's my bad that I didn't do a roll call. It was uh 7-0 for the record. We did not have anybody vote against that item. Thank you. I now request approval of items 7A through 7I. Item 7A is
033a supplemental contracts, 7B field trips and professional leaves, item 7C school fundraisers. I will note that our team has identified the disproportionate number of school fundraisers that are being approved this time or requesting approval in arrears. And there are folks here in the audience today that are prepared to answer questions and we have some process changes in place to make sure that there's always going to be one or two that happen that you may be in an event comes up. The robotics competition, for example, may not um you know, they may qualify for a trip and they start a fundraiser and finish it before there's even an opportunity for the board to act. That has not been the case with all of these tonight, so >> [clears throat] >> um we we're working working to
034make sure that we correct that. Item 7D claims and payroll. We have two payrolls, February 6th and February 20th, of just over 7.6 million dollars. The pre-runs from January 24th to January 31st, 2026 of just over 2.8 million dollars. And then the docket claims for a March 2nd of just over 1.22 million dollars. Item 7E is the district calendar change. We over communicated this over the last few weeks as a result of the severe weather that we've had and cancellations. We are requesting that the board approve the same change this year that we made last year due to also excessive numbers of cancellations due to severe weather. That change makes the professional development day that had been scheduled for April 6th, a student uh learning day uh and then moves the professional development day into
035that May time frame after students have uh already concluded their last student day. Overwhelmingly, our staff said the the use of that April day is much more productive as it's before AP testing starts as well as other testing. So, again, the same change that was requested last year. Item 7F is the student handbook updates. There's a two-page summary that was sent to the board a week ago Friday uh for review. It is just a summary of all of the changes that will be reflected. The overwhelming majority of those changes were policy number updates based on the policies that were changed uh and updated between the last uh last year's uh handbooks and and now. Item 7G is the three board policy updates on their second reading. And then item 7H is uh awarding the bid
036for Clifty Creek roof replacement. Um And item 7I is seeking the construction construction manager as contractor for building renovations at Richards and Southside Elementary Schools. I request approval of items 7A through 7I. I need to abstain from voting on uh item C. Confirm that with Mike, so. Are there any other uh items that we'd want pulled out for a separate vote? So, I think we're looking at uh if the board is ready a motion to approve 7A, 7B, and 7D through I. Am I reading the room right? Is there such a motion? I move that we approve items 7A, B, D through I at this time. Second. Thank you, Mr. Glick. Thank you, Mr. Schulz. Any discussion or questions? This includes uh the policies, the roof replacement, the CMC. Any questions or discussion before we
037I just want to acknowledge Dr. Bozeman and his team who have come in under budget on a roofing project. So, congratulations. Thank you. Thank you, Ms. Wheeldon. Uh I'll uh if we're ready, I'll do a roll call for the vote. Hey, Rich. Yes. Two two questions I have uh or actually two topics. School calendar. Um I noticed like during July, for example, the 4th of July was not a day off. And I know largely the calendars for during school year. I didn't know if there was a separate calendar for those people that do work year-long. And so, if there is, I'm okay. I just didn't know if that was tracked somewhere else. The other thing um in the handbook changes, uh there was a line about counseling uh before parental permission. Um my question is,
038will the parents be present? So, it's good that parents are given permission for counseling, but are the parents uh do they have a an opt-out or is there some kind of inclusion of the parent in the counseling? That wasn't clear with the lines we had. And then, um the other one was So, that was section B uh four on the list. And then, uh D with two eyes, D2 was students are billed for damage, but we're not going to bill the students, right? We're going to bill the parents or guardians. And so, I didn't know how it was written. I just had what we had, and I didn't know if those were things that we could clarify just so that it's not something that uh somebody would kind of try and skirt, so. To your
039first question, that would be up to the parent. That That line is specific to third-party um and contracted services. For example, Centerstone being the the largest one that works with our students. So, the parent um often times may say, "Yes, it's okay if you meet me with my student during the school day." And they can sign off on that, or they can say, "No, we're going to bring him in the evenings um and do it in an alternative way." >> what you just said, sign off on that was what was important. So, as long as there's a a place to document that a parent knows their child is being counseled for whatever reason, and they say it's okay to do that without them. That's all That's all I was trying to protect. I don't want
040to see a a a student get counseling that a parent didn't know about. And then on the second question, yes, it is uh billed to the family. Parent or guardian. Other questions or discussion? I was going to ask Dr. Phillips, there might be some parents or families out there that had already made plans for April 6th. Can you talk about how that's handled? Yes, if you uh that is uh the Monday following Easter, I believe. And so, Friday is a day off because we're always closed on Good Friday. So, it is a four-day weekend, and we understand some families may have already um decided to make plans for travel on that Monday. And so, if that's the case, please just contact your child's teacher teachers or principal, um and they will make sure that they
041have the opportunity to make up all of that work and it be an excused absence. The whole point of having the school on that day is to make sure kids have access to learning that's meaningful and valuable that day. And so we don't want to exclude anyone from that. Any other questions or discussion? If we're ready for a vote, we'll do a roll call vote. Uh The vote is on item 7A, B, and D through I. Mr. Schultz. I. Mr. Glick, how do you vote? I. Ms. Lloyd, how do you vote? I. Chair votes I. Mr. Nowlin, how do you vote? >> I. Mr. Major, your vote? >> Yes. And Ms. Wheeldin, your vote? I. So I believe that was unanimous, 7-0. After the roll call vote, last to be considered in package or item
042agenda item 7 is 7C about school fundraisers. You've heard the recommendation from the superintendent. Ms. Lloyd intends to abstain from this vote. Do we have a motion? Item 7C as presented this evening. >> Second. Thank you, Ms. Wheeldin. Thank you, Mr. Glick. Any questions or discussion on the fundraisers? I think uh Dr. Phillips noted that we probably have some folks in attendance this evening that are ready to answer questions. Hearing no questions and no discussion, I think we're ready for a vote. Uh Mr. Schultz, how do you vote? I. Mr. Glick. I. Ms. Lloyd, your vote? Abstain. Oh, you abstain. Thank you. Uh chair votes I. Mr. Nowlin, your vote? >> I. Mr. Major, your vote? >> Yes. And Ms. Wheeldin, your vote? I. Thank you very much. Item 7C is passed with a vote
043of six to zero. Dr. Stahlbaum, I think we're ready for human resource recommendations. Thank you. The 10 human resources recommendations tonight consist of two retirements, four resignations, and three leaves of absence. There is one additional personnel recommendation as well. I request that you please approve items 8A and B as presented. A recommendation from Dr. Stahlbaum, is there a motion for items 8A and B? I I move to approve Oh, go ahead. I got I move to approve line items 8A and B as presented. Second. Thank you, Mr. Schultz and Mr. Nowlin. Any discussion or questions? Hearing none, we can move to the roll call vote. Mr. Schultz? Aye. Mr. Glick, how do you vote? Aye. Ms. Lloyd, your vote? Aye. Chair votes aye. Mr. Nowlin? Aye. Mr. Major, your vote? Ms. Weelden? Aye. Thank you.
0447-0. Opportunity at the close of the meeting for board input and review. Start with you, Ms. Weelden. I uh I would just like to acknowledge the work that teachers, administration, and etc. do to pump our kids up. I have had three teachers reach out to me today. Two of them tonight, actually. Mr. Edwards gave me some positive feedback about my daughter. And Mr. Cooper, as he went through the line, also said the same thing. And it has like made my week. Um so, I just you know, you may not recognize the impact that you're having on family members when you share something positive, but it it truly turned me around. So, I had a bad week before that, actually. So, turned it around for me. And then, um the second thing was there are a
045couple things I'm not a townee, okay? I'm an import to Columbus, Indiana. I've been here a long time, but there are a few topics that I have found um create a reaction by people that are open lunches is one of them. Okay? And then the other one is senior projects. That seems to be kind of a thing for people in Columbus. Um and I have been able to um see senior project report outs, etc. and I kind of understood the concept, but now I have a senior going through one and my goodness, she is working her tail off. And um and her group of friends, I mean, they are just phenomenal pieces of work in the community. One um created a 5K race and you think about all the things it takes for a kid
046to put something like that together. It's just really impressive. So, I know sometimes they get a bad rap, maybe there's some easier ways out, but for the kids who really want to give it their all, I feel like she is taking something away from this and I'm pretty impressed with the process. I'm pro. Pro senior projects. In case there was any question. Thank you, Ms. Weldon. Mr. Major? >> [clears throat] >> Yeah, I just wanted to again, I've done this in the past a couple of times, thank Mrs. Haynes and the entire team of teachers and parents that worked really hard with all of our robotics programs that we had this year. There were several events that were both local and statewide and it it takes a lot of work and effort uh to to
047make an event go well and I think our IT team here has done a great job as well coordinating all the cords and TVs and timers and everything, scoreboards and scoring system. It just I I don't know that we had too many issues that were noticeable and I think it's something that's pretty cool to see not just uh uh athletes tonight we celebrated, but we also I people that are doing it with their brains, and so um not that athletes aren't smart, but these kids are all out here trying to solve a complex problem. They're doing it in both a collaborative and competitive environment. And I think that is a really good start for their future. And hopefully we build a lot of good strong engineers, doctors, lawyers, and others. And then, you know, obviously
048those that don't go to college, they can take those problems solving skills and put those to a trade. So So it's a it's a really good program. Hopefully we can continue to do a good job. And hopefully parents stay engaged with it and keep their kids uh focused on having some fun building robots. Thank you, Mr. Major. Mr. Nalen. Um a couple things. Last week Mr. Glick and I had the opportunity to visit Cliff Ty Creek Elementary, um and I just want to give a shout out to the the opportunity that our community has with the Legato program um that's offered there that there are very few places around the state where elementary kids can can begin a an immersed Spanish immersion program that will continue through middle school and high school. So thank you
049to Principal Mehaffey and the staff there for a for a great visit. Um also, I want to thank Mr. Glick and Ms. Lloyd and everyone involved with the survey. Um it was great to see the results. I especially want to thank the 4,518 people who responded to the survey. Um one of the things the consultant said was that that was among the higher return rates of the surveys that that they that they have done. Um and finally, um last week I was at the um Brown County Art Gallery, and they happened to be having a a student art show. So, there was from high school and middle school students around the region and quite a few of them were from our high school students, but particularly I want to give a shout-out to CSA New
050Tech. Um there were several paintings that were detailed pictures of of flowers and and I suspected that they came from a combination science art class that they offer at CSA New Tech. So, I checked with Mr. Gable and he said, "Yes, in fact they do." So, it's Bridget Steele and and I'm going to apologize ahead of time for the pronunciation, but Vanessa Flut- Flutterman Gutierrez, they do a class called scientific illustrations, which it just is exciting to see. It's not just art, it's not just science, it's art and science that the kids are doing together. So, if you get a chance, I don't know how long the show goes on over there, but it's worth a trip to Nashville. Thank you, Mr. Nolen. Mr. Schultz, any closing comments? I'm drowned. Yes, I did. >> Threw
051me off there. I just want to congratulate the East athletes and also thank Dr. Bozeman's team for the detail level on all these bids especially as they're coming in under budget and appreciate all the due diligence. And then also just thank all the staff today that scrambled to a 2-hour delay with the weather and I know the forecast changed three times I think between midnight and 6:00 a.m. so, I'm just appreciate everyone being nimble and supporting the students. Thank you, Mr. Schultz. Mr. Glick. I apologize in case he switched it up on me again. Uh like Mr. Schultz said, congratulations to the East athletes. I can attest on Josh's behalf. Um there's nothing more lonely than being an individual continuing to go on by yourself. I did that when I was in high school and
052it it's kind of miserable to be pushing yourself the whole way and it's a testament to East wrestling program and the six qualifiers that they had and five placers and again four returning next year. Uh for and and on top of that I looked through their roster of their 14 starters 11 of them are returning. So there's a high probability of them being state dual champs as well. Um on the other side of the school or county excuse me Cowan Long also represented Columbus North at uh the wrestling finals. So congratulations to him as well. Um congratulations for the gymnastics teams. North won team sectionals and next week is going to be regionals and there's no semi-state correct it goes straight to state after regionals. Am I right? I think so. And if you didn't
053know anything about North gymnastics team they're among the best in the state and have been on the podium I think the last four or five years. So good luck to them and then congratulations to East gymnast Bethany Lewis who was the all-around champ uh for sectionals and so she will continue on as well through regionals and hopefully state as well. This Friday is going to be a barn burning rematch of North versus East if I remember right that one went to overtime. And so uh that starts the sectional tournament. So nothing like certain sectionals in the state tournament where you have your cross town rival. So and then on top of that this weekend uh 25th Street is going to be pretty busy. Uh the Indiana State Wrestling Association is hosting uh the state wrestling
054meet for folk style so probably all six of those individuals that were sitting over there are probably going to be wrestling again this weekend this weekend. Uh season never ends just like how uh Coach Trueblood talked about all the off-season work that these guys put in. It It's never-ending, especially if you want to be successful. And congratulations to uh I think he said eight uh all academic all-state for East. And North, to my knowledge, had at least four. So, uh it's pretty nice to see not only they're succeeding in athletics, but they're doing it in the classroom as well. Mr. Blake? Ms. Lloyd? I certainly echo everybody's comments. It's really nice to see East back again so soon. Um a few things that maybe haven't been mentioned. Congratulations to Coach Branham and the Northside Spartans
055on their first place team competition win at Mathcounts. It's really exciting. Um also, congratulations to the CSA Elementary students who won the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Symphony in Color Art Contest. Um their some of their art is online and it they did a really wonderful job. Um the last thing I just have to mention and I was interviewed recently with some of the Central Charger students in their new green room um for my day job. Uh so, it was just a bonus that I got to see behind the scenes and it is amazing. Real green screen, incredible cameras, and a student anchor who did a fabulous job. And I just I walked away being reminded of the endless opportunities that our kids have in this corporation. And it was it was such a great day. Made
056my month. So, if you ever get a chance to watch the Charger News, um those students do a really good job. So, kudos to them. Thank you, Ms. Lloyd. Uh in addition to the East students that we recognized this evening, that know North had additional good news that Dr. Phillips shared with us five national merit scholarship finalists from North High School and four US Presidential Scholars recognized at North High School. So, lots going on at all our schools. Uh we do have the best students. We've got the best teachers. We've got the best parents in the state. We thank them all. Success is not a possibility without everybody pulling together. Uh upcoming meetings for the board and for the school corporation, we have an executive session on March 23rd, 4:00 p.m. Uh that will not
057be a public meeting. Um but the board does advertise executive session meetings just like we advertise our regular school board meetings. And the next regular school board meeting will be after spring break, Monday the 30th, 6:30 p.m. And instead of meeting here, that meeting will be at Columbus North High School. Kind of sound like my voice is changing there. I might be going through puberty. Um Dr. Phillips, is there board members, is there any additional business to come before the meeting? I just wanted to say I I just wanted to echo the senior project. Um I was I was just having dinner with family members last night and there were some mid-20 year olds. The other thing that's unique about them is that no one in graduates from BCSE without remembering what they did for
058their senior project and they can tell you about it 10 years later, 15 years later, they can tell you exactly what they did. Might forget a lot of things they did in school, but they almost always remember that. And Mr. Major, the there's a picture up there from the robotics competition or one of them. Uh the end of the day last Saturday on the final uh match to go, the kids rushed the floor. That's how exciting it was. It's the first time I've ever seen the the judges had to keep kids back from hitting the table. It was It was crazy exciting. Uh and then I want to congratulate This is a strange one, but congratulations to the eighth graders at Northside who are going to move into their uh permanent home for the rest
059of the school year. And I believe for those students it's the first time since maybe if especially if they went to Parkside or Schmidt that they haven't been in construction. They'll be in a new area for the first time in maybe 4 years of their careers. Um and then if you haven't been out to the Westside to see the structure coming up around uh the Maple Grove building coming together, it is quite shocking how quickly that is starting to look like a school. And the last thing I just want to say is please everyone be safe over spring break and come back uh ready to go um at the end of a well-deserved break. Thank you, Dr. Phillips. Meeting is adjourned. Here's where I'm leaving my binder. I leave.
