Board meeting board meeting of the Miss B school board of education will now come to time is 63 >> Mr. Randy President, >> Miss Strong Martinez present, >> Mr. Pedro Valdez, >> present, >> and Miss Sandra, present. >> Thank you. Moving on to our pledge of allegiance, Mr. Pedro. Pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> Thank you. Going on approval of agenda. Is there any changes? Not that I'm aware of. Okay. With that motion motion to approve. >> Motion by Sandy. >> Second by Miss Lucy. All in favor? >> I. >> Motion carries. Moving on to approval of signature minutes from regular board meeting December 9th, 2025. Is there any questions?
>> I move to approve. >> Okay, we move to approve of motion by Sam. >> A second. >> Second by all in favor. >> Motion carries. Moving on to public comment. Is there any I I didn't think there's any >> I mean I left. >> Yeah. So moving on to presentation open for discussion. Mr. Kush presentation I believe let's see the staff reports are going to come under the next session. So no there's no separate presentations. Okay. Going on to board information, discussions, teacher presentations, my book, Miss Kelly Sanchez. >> Sorry, my tea is working on it. >> If you could come up to the front, too. >> Yeah, I will. It's just got my here. I can't get the link. It's not coming up on the website. So, sorry for the delay. It's a
scam. >> Would you like to work on it while we go on? >> You could. That's okay. >> Okay. Okay. >> Just get the link. >> Okay. We'll move to Moses and come back to Miss Kellis. Miss, are you on? >> Yes. Can you Can you all hear me? >> Yes. Yeah. >> Okay. So, we're uh on our way home from Las Cusus, so I'm hoping the internet uh cooperates with us. So, I'm trying to uh share. So, Sean, I don't know if you received the share request. >> Yes. >> Okay, perfect. >> Thank you very much. Uh again, thank you for for having me and uh let me just go ahead and get this set up. Perfect. So, um I'll go ahead and begin with our CT program updates. And as always, I like
to uh focus on the end goal of uh the Leopard graduate. And so this is our graduate profile where our goal ultimately is to um create creative and critical thinkers, active and culturally aware citizens, resilient students, ethical and effective communicators, and socially responsible students. So um in taking a look at our CT programs of study, our ultimate goal is really to enhance the career connected learning opportunities for our students across all courses. So that cross-curricular approach. Uh we're focusing on incorporating more application uh throughout our academic opportunities. Uh focusing on increasing employability skills and workforce readiness. uh and also looking at how we can go about this effort as an innovation zone. So currently the state of New Mexico is providing updates um across the board across all uh career pathways and uh we can
look at them as career clusters. And so these are the current pathways that we're offering at our school. Also we have the health sciences, skil trades, film and digital arts, hospitality, culinary, engineering and STEM. So that's under the advanced manufacturing section and egg science. And so through the statewide approach uh in fact we just attended the egg science review. And so the ultimate goal is really to align uh the course of study in all pathways so that students are engaged in relevant and current uh standards. And so that's really understanding like the goal of the new framework uh with the way the market is changing and evolving uh looking at how to update the course sequences using labor market data. We're looking at job growth um and livable wages. We're also looking at increasing the
number of uh opportunities for our students by creating relevant course descriptions um again that are applicable in this day and age. And so um the the first section that we went to was for the egg science and it went really well. uh we'll be continuing with the other areas. Um another aspect of the uh CT component is really the student voice. So uh we've engaged in another round of career interest surveys and this is offered by the P2C platform that is utilized by the state of New Mexico. So it's the pathway to careers. So we'll have that data available uh by by next week. uh we're attending P2C meetings held by the public education department to support us with our efforts and uh again using data to to provide relevant offerings. Um a lot of
these initiatives are are part of the Carl D. Perkins uh pathway the innovation zone uh which is a grant we just received as well as a disability innovation fund. uh this is really enhancing the math aspect so it becomes more applicable. So how can math be used in all of these uh career clusters and uh the other is the STEM grant which is supporting our advanced manufacturing the systems go uh courses. Um we're expanding our workbased learning and internship opportunities uh as part of the innovation zone. So, we're looking at in-house internships. We have students that just completed their semester of virtual health internship. Uh, these students will be participating in an advocacybased capstone project. Uh, and their proposal will be presented to administration and the ultimate goal is really providing mental health first aid
to all staff. Uh we've partnered with the department department of workforce uh in providing uh quality work-based learning opportunities and our students are currently uh sophomores through seniors are learning how to fill out their W4 form. So uh that's the first step and then we'll be able to begin that process. Uh we have uh our CTSO leadership. So um we have our business professionals of America state conference happening in February. FCCLA will be at the end of March or the April. HOSA April 9th through the 11th. FFA will be having a New Mexico leadership conference April 6th through the 8th. And uh as part of the advocacy uh project is uh the CTS roundhouse advocacy trips for our students to share their CTE journeys and it's really important that they hear these messages from our
students. So FFA will be participating on January 7th at the capital and HOSA BPA and FCCLA will participate on January 30th. And so again, these students will be engaged in legislative advocacy uh and leadership development. Uh we have some highlights. Our business professionals of America students uh Coronado Middle School and Liebrook. Uh this is a list of our students have qualified for uh state conference. So we have Coronado Middle web design, Kyra, Austin, Bailey, and Laya. Our visual design team, we have uh team one, Gabe Bentley, and uh Richard Madrid. We have visual design team number two, we have Jordan, Adam, Alfred, and Dominic. Uh video production, Visenth, and Richie Garcia. Coronado High School, we have our virtual 2D animation team that will be competing nationally. Uh presubmissions are due for them this week. uh
that involves Corbin, Malays, Juan, and Jonathan. Our visual design team one uh that advanced to state, we have Rocky and Julio. Visual design team two uh advancing to state, Rowdy, Raiden, Marcos, and Jared. Video production team, we have Martine, Malachi, Aiden, and Santos. Uh as part of the economic research individual uh we have Malays animation, Ethan, Skyla, Janelle, Naomi, our parliamentary procedure team, Analysis, Ocean, Tracia, Ariel, and Mia. And another virtual promotional photography individual, Malachi again will be competing nationally. And virtual multimedium promotion Analysis Garcia nationally. So, the virtual competitions uh compete nationally and uh we're hopeful that they'll be called for a second round for presentation. If they complete top 10, they're invited to the national conference. Whitebrook Middle School, we have the digital game design team one, Ural, Alexander, Trey, and Deshawn. Digital
Game Design Team 2, Kingston, Daryl, Jason, Amari, and our voting delegates, Tanisha, and Ray Lynn. Uh for the HOSA regional competitors, all these individuals advanced to the state competition. Uh we have Lenio in research poster and CPR and first aid. Aiden, public service announcement, CPR and first aid. Malay, Mariah, Sen, Santos, and Martin. In public service announcement, we have Ocean and Alyssa and Ariel in public health and M and Natalia. In community awareness, >> I think they decided after they got that. >> What's up? >> Not sure who that is. Someone needs to mute. Oh, okay. Um, for FCCLA, uh, they just got the regional competition on Saturday. These individuals advanced to state competition. We have Malaysia and Marcos. Uh, in the fashion design and in focus on children, we have Ariel, Ariel, and Analysis.
Uh, FFA, we had Hunter Suski. He was able to observe the creed competition. This was held in Grants. Uh and then currently again the egg and energy core standards convening. This is the one that Mr. Ol and I just attended and we're on our way back from. Uh we have our professional learning and collaboration. So we have our rural CT alliance meetings that we're a part of the pathway to careers initiative with the d disability innovation fund program. So this is providing professional development. Uh we have our statewide and regional collaboration webinars. Uh we've been invited to present for future focus ed and uh we're focusing on continuous improvement through our uh partnerships. Uh we're currently uh focusing on our facilities and program growth. So we have a few images from our students working on
the greenhouse and the kitchen development phase. Uh so our students have set up tables and sections uh within the greenhouse and the culinary room is being revamped. So as you can see we have the commercial commercial commercial appliances. We'll be working on uh getting uh that all set up. So in closing for the CT updates, we're continuing to strengthen our programs. We're seeing great success in our CTSA programs. Uh focusing heavily on those employability skills uh that will transfer over into the academic section. Uh expanding internship opportunities and and just really looking at providing the best opportunities for our students. And so that's the CT updates. Uh do you want me to go ahead and go into the act recap? >> Yes, go ahead. >> Okay, perfect. So, as as part of CTE, uh it's
important that we have uh professional development opportunities. And so, uh we were fortunate enough to have funding to attend the ACT vision conference in Nashville. This was back in Denver. And so, we have uh Miss Irish, Miss O, Mr. Mamemik, and Mr. talk is uh that we're all in attendance. So a quick synopsis again tying to our graduate port portfol or profile. This is what we're looking at providing for our students. Uh so the ACT conference is one of the largest uh national convenings for CT leaders uh with a focus on uh aligning workforce uh development opportunities and innovation to provide opportunities to uh rural students. um back at home. And so the national CT landscape uh we're we're again seeing uh expansion at the national level for focusing on rural communities. So um they
have an entire section focusing. Uh every session provided throughout the conference there was always a strand focused on rural communities. Uh we were able to learn more about the Carl D. Perkins federal updates and how that funding has moved from uh the education department to the department of labor. Uh we're focusing on our comprehensive local needs assessment again focusing on data uh to support uh our programs and ultimately focusing on the high skill, high wage and in demand careers. Uh some of the breakout sessions we attended focused on rural CT innovation and equity. How do we provide equity for all students? Uh we learned you know of course transportation has been a barrier for many. And so that's something that you know we're hoping to uh eliminate as a barrier. uh some of the sessions
focused on uh work-based learning opportunities provided in-house again because we're rural and so sometimes it's not easy to to transport our students on a daily basis uh into some of the larger areas. Uh industry credentials, this is where um our ultimate goal is to graduate students with industry certifications. uh we had some sessions on artificial intelligence and the emerging technologies and how we need to incorporate uh those teachings into uh the CT programs and then another aspect was teacher recruitment and retention. So how do we recruit and retain teachers when individuals in the industry um earn more uh money? So uh those were some of the sections. Uh we also attended sessions focusing on the pathways and career clusters that we're currently offering. Again, health sciences, skil trades, digital media, culinary, engineering, and agriculture. Um
many of the common themes really uh internships are important. Uh this helps our students uh go out into the workforce, but it also helps them in the college aspect so they're prepared. uh credentials that are tied to the workforce demand. You know, we have students uh certified in first state CPR, OSHA 10, food handlers. So, again, really focusing on those important industry credentials so that they're employable upon graduation. Uh looking at data to support sustainability, uh being innovative and again how rural districts can lead innovation because again we have to think outside the box. Uh so in closing the vision conference was uh definitely um helpful as it allowed us an opportunity to engage in meaningful collaboration with other individuals from the different pathways and different areas across the nation. Uh we learned about aligning
uh our programs of study with national best practices to provide stronger student outcomes and uh really just preparing our students for college career and life. Uh so again, thank you for the opportunity and uh we're excited to continue the work at home. >> Recording some technical issues with slow internet today. So, do we move to do we move together? Yes, I think we're good. Well, mention Crystal's travel will be later in the agenda. >> I think we got my permission to share. >> I think it is. Some people were able to get in without a passcode and others it said it was required tonight. So, >> all right. So, I'm in here to share for a live book. Um, we are eagles. That's one of the themes we have in my classroom when we do
our affirmations and stuff. We started off with we are equals and then from there we built up we are scientists, we are this and they've just kind of built on that. So that's just kind of the theme for my classroom. So all right so capturing kids hearts is something that we've all been working on and some of the good things we're seeing um at Liebrook and in my classroom are daily check-ins and greetings between the teacher and student. So, when they come in, there's always a handshake and a good morning. Um, if they've been absent, kind of checking in on them, glad to have you back. Those kind of things. Just a real quick check-in every morning. Um, good things are being reported in my classroom at least two times per week. We stop at
the end of the day and we kind of say, "Tell me something good that's happened." And so, and then we have a wall where we we post our good things and we share a few out loud and then if not, the kids can always go read them at a later time. And so we've been doing that. Um, frequent reminders and references to the social contract. When the kids leave my classroom and they're going to another class, I remind them, be on your best behavior. Make sure you're following your social contract. And so, it's consistently reminding them of that. Um, if we have visitors, anything like that. They hold each other responsible for following the routines, which is exactly what we want them to do. Um, refocusing and behavior reminders have have been very effective. All
I got to do a lot of the times is just say, "Is that part of our contract?" And that kind of stops everything. You know, they're like, "Um, yeah, I guess not." And they'll kind of just go back. Um, we've had very few behavior referrals um from this group of kids. They've been doing really good about catching themselves and fixing it. Um, now they have started and when I made this um or started making it, they hadn't really started yet, but they are taking on those first roles. So, we have an affirm and a contract um raider and a good things leader. And then we also have a greeter. So, now not only do I greet the students, sorry, not only do I greet the students, but now I have a student that greets them
as well. And they're rotating once a week, I mean every week. And so in my affirm they look for positive things that are happening and they tell the kids at the end, you know, we do it at the end of the week and they say, you know, I noticed so and so, like one of the ones now was, I noticed that this student was being really positive this week and that was something that we had been working on. And so that was perfect. He felt really good about that. Um, and then the contract reader, what they do is they look at our social contract and check, are we doing what we're supposed to be doing? Where do we fall as from a 1 to 10 this week? did we follow our contract as a whole
group? And then our good things leader, they check in with the kids and see what good things they have. Um, continuing, one of the strategies we have is the students are partnered together when they need to present individually to offer support for each other. So during our Christmas or our winter program, Christmas program, the kids recited poetry and while they were doing that, they went up in groups of three and only the center student was presenting um out loud and then they would rotate and so that they always had a support person on either side so they didn't feel alone, they didn't feel um nervous. It built their confidence, helped build that public speaking and that was one of the strategies they had given us and it worked really well. They did really good about
standing in front of people. They didn't seem very nervous. They did a really great job. So, we just wanted to kind of put that into action and show that. Moving on. Um I work as a site test coordinator out at Zbrook. And so, I just have just a quick um positive note there from for us. um back at the beginning of the year on our Amira testing in K through eight, we had 15% of our students, nine of them at the time, at a level four or five um in reading. Now, at our middle of the year in December, we had 19 students testing in K through eight at a fourth four or five level. And so they we basically doubled that. In math, it's a little bit lower, but we had four students, 7%
testing at a level four or five. and that increased to eight students testing at a four or five. So we also doubled that one. So we are seeing increases. We are seeing some of that middle of the year and hoping just to continue that as we go. It's just kind of a quick thing there. um our ELELLL class or EL class is something new that we started um back in November I believe we started it and so the pro program goals are to attain English proficiency and meaningful access to the general curriculum and so we have 12 students in K through 8 we have them in one class and um they work we work together the focus we've been working on is participating in oral and written exchanges so they're having conversations and we we
are doing them around specific things. We talked about introductions. We've talked about vocabulary, school, things like that. Um adapting that language for purpose and audience so they know it's okay to talk one way with peers versus in a school setting. Um creating clear speech and text. A lot of the pronouns do the younger kids will say me went instead of I went things like that. So, we're working on getting those that um clear speech, the clear text, making it kind of um that good English that we're looking for. We're using culturally responsive classroom, incorporating the students native cultures, making connections to the students lives. We're using those vocabul. um comprehensible input and scaffolding. Use visuals, graphic organizers, organizers, sentence starters, and then interactions and collaborations, peer modeling, the structure talk because it is K8. Um
at the beginning, we had three eighth graders in there with us and so they would work a lot with the younger students and so they would help correct the younger students whereas they were fixing theirs at the same time. So they were they were doing a lot of that and so that that peer has been really helpful and the younger kids really love working with those older ones. They just feel so good to be around them. All right, moving on to the next great things. The tortoise in the hair um was the program that we did with Misola's children's theater and we use that performance to assist in fulfilling our literacy benchmarks. These are the benchmarks that are mandated by the public education department. These are including the ones you see here. Those are just
a few of them. But we figured it's a good fun way to incorporate some of those and to um get together with the community and give our our students a chance to do something a little bit different. And so I'm just going to kind of share through here some pictures and things through the week of how it went um for the performance. So this is just kind of real quick. So this was our audition day. They have them sit in a circle and they just kind of test them out. They kind of have them speak um do little games till they can see who's a little bit more outgoing, who's the shy ones and things like that so they can find the appropriate parts for them. And so that was just them kind of all
participating there. This was rehearsals our second day. Um and we used the library and we used the gym. And then in the in between rehearsals because we have three rehearsals a day and so in between we did a mind workshop with them and the kids really enjoyed that. They were surprised at how much they could understand through the mind just without any words how much they could still understand each other. So it was a really neat experience for them as well. So some of those pictures are from there. This was our rehearsal day three. They had just set up the set and so they were just kind of getting excited and checking in and seeing how it was going to look and go. So here was dress rehearsal and our first performance. Um there's our
little prek students enjoying the show. Um and just kind of everybody you can see the smiles on their faces and the excitement. And then this was our the part of the performance as well. um just kind of an overview of the entire cast. Every almost every student participated. I think we had two that didn't show up the day of the performance. Other than that, every student participated in one way or another. We had um three boys that were our um they were kind of director's assistants, so they helped through the rehearsals, but then they did our sound, they did the light, you know, they helped with all that other stuff. They videotaped for us and different things. So, they were backstage, but they did a lot. Um, so we had a really good turnout with
um the participation. All right. And then focus on academics, math and science fun. During our Christmas party, we still tried to include a lot. So we did some math and science fun um reindeer games is what we call them. So they were doing some games with um the marshmallows. They had to figure out fractions as to how many they were able to pick up with candy canes like chopsticks. They had to count get them as fast as they could. It was like a minute to win it type game. And then once they did that, they had to figure out a fraction of the total amount they had to begin with and how many they had gotten and who had the most. So we still incorporated some of the things that we had been working on.
So we had been doing some fractions. Um the ramp you see in the middle, they had to make reindeer and the reindeer would walk on their own. We had been doing science. We had been talking about gravity and so it was a way to show that the gravity works, how it pulls us down. And so it showed how the reindeer would walk down a ramp. And so I have some videos to show you real quick of some of those. Hopefully the internet will let it work. Um, of those kids with their reindeer. See if I can turn it up on my hand. And you can see it how it wobbles down. It depends on how they Sorry, I'm going have to turn off the volume so it doesn't echo, but depending on how they bent
the legs back. And there was a lot of different things they experimented with to get that to go. So then I had another group and these guys were really competitive. They had that big long ramp at first and then they realized that was too difficult so they kind of kept it. But um the excitement and I I really wish I could play the sound without it echoing. But um just the excitement that of them actually seeing it work and knowing that they weren't just pushing it down because at first that was the thing. We're just going to push it down and make ours go fastest. And then they realized, oh no, it moves on its own. I don't have to push it. Then it was like really exciting. was real different. And then this student
continued working even after the fact. He um decided that he wasn't done with it. He wanted to show me his own and do it differently on a different size ramp. So he continued to redo it a few times there on his own afterwards. And so they enjoyed their little reindeer games um during our Christmas party and stuff also. All right. In the new year, semester 2, we've been working on math adoption. We've ordered samples of approximately 10 high-ranking math programs for the teachers at both campuses to review and compare. Our goal is to meet at our district in service this Friday and begin the conversation about what we need to help our students be successful. We've sent out a form for everybody to keep track of the ones they're reviewing so that we can really
look at it together and make sure that we're meeting those needs um for both the teachers and the students, what we need to teach it and what they need to receive it. After the initial meeting, we're going to work on filling out finishing filling out the worksheets and be able to compare them. Um, place our order by March or April to ensure delivery before the school year begins because in the past that's been a big issue. Um, we didn't have a good process and so a lot of times we wouldn't get our materials until late. We wouldn't place our orders till May, June, and then we wouldn't get them by the time school started. We'd be starting without. So, we really that's our main focus is getting everything in everybody's hands before the school year
starts. So, and then my class having some updates there. Um, kids enjoying the different activities throughout the year. Um, reading in ELA, we're doing a novel study on gamut there. Continuing focus of science of reading, utilizing strategies and skills from the PED required AIM pathways proficient reading for secondary students class that I'm taking. Um and then math both works both groups will be focusing on different working on fractions in different ways. Um and then moving into geometry shortly after and equations and expressions. Um utilizing test results to guide interventions and assist the students to advance to where they need to be or beyond. science and history. The same reading strategies from the reading to increase understanding of the science and social studies curriculum helping the students to better understand the academic language and the reading
skills necessary to dig deeper into their text. And that's it. Just an overview of my class and things that are h great things that are happening out of >> any questions for Kelly. >> Thank you, Kelly. >> Thank you. Very thorough. Thanks. I hope >> principal reports, Mr. Huckus, >> good evening everyone. Um, so I just got back from a training that's why I was not able to make it in person. Uh, we had a CSI training today in Albuquerque. So, I want to start off with, uh, with staffing. Again, we're still pretty good on staffing on the enrollment. As you can see, the total is 124 kids at uh at the Guyana campus. Uh and you can see the breakdown from preK to 12 12th grade. Um we've been holding steady at a 124.
Uh the building, the custodians have been working pretty hard on maintaining it, keeping it clean. Uh, as Miss Gigos mentioned a while ago, they worked real hard on uh setting up that uh culinary arts uh classroom, removing uh old u countertops and just moving things around to set it set it up uh where the new equipment is going to go. So, it's coming along good. Uh in December, um our Christmas uh uh play uh was a big success. Um, you know, I'd like to uh recognize the Miss Sheli Pia for her hard work that she did on setting up that play working with the teachers um and her uh high school student council. Really um worked hard to to practice with our kids to help set up the the different uh backgrounds. Uh they worked
really hard and um it was a pretty good uh a pretty good play for those of you that weren't able to to go. It was uh it was real nice. Uh we'll be meeting as a CSI committee this week uh to review u the the grant uh so we can start putting some of those uh POS uh to so we can start ordering some uh some supplies and stuff for the teachers in the classrooms um to that's part of that grant. As I mentioned just now, we were at a training today at uh myself, Miss uh Tanya Gyos, and Miss Crystal Chavez. And uh we got a pretty good start today at uh analyzing our the elementary's uh data and uh so we can start uh revisiting our 90-day plan this uh this week. um
starting we will be looking at uh at at redoing our uh our goals uh to make sure that we kind of follow uh the the kids uh progress. Um then some of the upcoming events uh the Cuba both the girls and boys will be at Cuba invite this uh this week on Thursdays their first uh game. So that should be a pretty good tournament. On Wednesday, I'll be meeting with uh Capturing Kids Hard. We have a a check-in uh meeting Zoom to kind of go over what we've been doing with capturing kids at the in our district. Um on Friday, we have a inservice uh staff in service. On that day, we're going to be uh again, we're going to be working on uh on data to start working on our 90-day plan. Avid's going
to come in and work with our teachers and uh CES uh is going to be coming to work with our elementary staff on uh and math and curriculum alignment, standard alignment. Uh, and then you can uh see that I'm not going to go through every uh all the games that are coming up, but we have a lot of games this uh this month at uh at both that Gina and uh and away games. Uh on the 27th, uh Dr. Matt Williams will be on site to pro provide some uh professional development on the standard alignment with our elementary teachers. again uh moving forward uh our IMAS uh MOI testing window has opened. We've done some testing already. Um one of the things that we uh worked on is we created a new master schedule and
the master schedule was created to uh be able to put in a lot of those CT courses into the master schedule for kids to have more opportunities. Uh there are some other courses that we added to the schedule for uh some of those students that are getting ready to graduate that need to take a foreign language or a health class that they had not uh previously taken. So we added some classes so they can be able to uh to take those classes to uh make sure that they're in compliance for uh for um a graduation. Uh, that's about all I got for you folks uh tonight. I stand for any questions. >> I have a question, Mr. Who uh checks on the greenhouse during the weekend. >> I couldn't hear you. >> Who checks on
the greenhouse like during the weekend to make sure everything is okay? >> I'm not sure who's checking the greenhouse over the weekend. Uh, Miss Gyos, do you know who's who's uh checking the greenhouse? Is is that Jason >> over the over the weekend? Is that >> Over the weekend. >> Yes. >> Uh I'm not sure, but we can go ahead and and follow up on that. I'm not sure if we have anyone. Uh I know Mr. Occasionally checks on it as well. Uh but we'll go ahead and follow up on that. See, >> and if we have to, we can assign someone to uh to make sure to go in there and make sure that u there's no water freezing or nothing like that. >> It would be really a simple thing to get a
sensor that's in there that would automatically notify one or two people if it got too cold in there. So, >> any other questions? And it does have a thermostat that will uh be so it'll help regulate the temperature. >> Yeah. >> So I know that you on the last meeting we said about the cell phone policy and you said it was you know slowly getting implemented but like on average how many phones are being turned in? >> Excuse me. I couldn't hear you. >> On average how many cell phones are being turned in by the students? Um, I'm not sure the average I would say probably in the neighborhood of uh 20 phones, but we're uh pushing that right now. Uh, we're we're pushing it to where in the morning we're forcing the kids. Um,
I talked to a staff member. We're going to be working on some incentive to see if we can uh up that uh the amount. Uh the one thing that that I can say is that not everybody's putting their phones away, but there's they're not using them in the during the day at school. So we we've the issues that we had last year with cell phones, we're not seeing them uh right now. So it's been working >> even though they're not using them. Our policy states they need to flee in lockers. So, the thing is is that I don't see the cell phones out. When we ask them to put them away, they say they don't bring them. I can't search them to uh to see if they have a phone or not. The only time
that we make sure that they're in the box if we see the cell phones out. >> And then are we holding them responsible if they are caught with their phone? Like are they >> We are We are the cell if they if they if we see a cell phone out, the cell phone is taken away. And then are we is there a reason why we're not using the auditorium? >> What do you mean the auditorium? The conference room? >> No. So I play and I'm just wondering why we didn't use the auditorium. >> I I don't know anything about that other than that building. That would be a Jeremy question. I don't know if we can use that building. >> Wasn't it closed officially? The whole building? >> Not that it been used in the
past. Um, Jeremy, do you can you answer that? I think he's online. >> I can wait for you. >> Okay. >> I was just wondering. >> Yeah, I had thought of that. Didn't know he had used it in the past, but my assumption would be that the building was closed for student use and has been closed for a few years now. >> A long time. >> Closed since I've been which is four years. Is that because it's condemned or something or is it just simply because there's not facilities the district chose to close it all students into the other facility. So >> nice to have back in >> even after the building was closed. Um, I remember when it was last time they used it, but I don't know. That's I had thought of it.
I don't know. I can check into that cuz I did some work to the plugs on the floor to make sure they were up to date. Um, okay. >> Yeah, I was just curious because I attended the Christmas play which was very nice. Um, but yeah, specializ >> we have something for this. That's >> Thank you. >> You're welcome. >> I can't answer that. Insurance is listed as an empty building, >> then we probably shouldn't use it. >> I think it's non use. We could run into issues with insurance. >> Yeah. Public school facilities and insurance, but I'll I'll check. >> Yeah, I'll just go ahead. Okay. Um, good evening and welcome to new board new board members. Um, so on on my report, oh, sorry you can't hear me. On my report, I usually
have the goals for 2526 and as of January, I'm happy to say that we've been meeting the top four. um staying in traditional and imped status, improving school climate, public relations with the school and the community, and then increasing Navajo language use and cultural awareness. And also having students teach me Navajo because I'm still talking in Apache to them. And then improving attendance with um math and English proficiency rates like you just heard from Miss Sanchez. So um that will be on each uh of my reports so that way we just have it in the open and we can see it every month. So the important library and JMSD dates are written there. Um the beginning of January testing has been completed. Uh we just need to do the WEDA testing for access for EL
students and we've scheduled that February 17 and 18 uh for Ybrook. Um, and then the uh, equity council briefing happened. That was 1 p.m. and that was uh, Mr. Hawkins and myself. And um, we volunteered to be the leads for the district's equity council. And we got the, um, specific requirements for who's supposed to be on there. So, that'll be coming out. And then, um, January 8th is the, uh, was the power school training for admin. And then, um, our in services Friday like Mr. Hucka said, "So, uh, there's a tenative schedule right now. So, Liebrook will do, um, we're going to go, I can't remember now. I'm the one who wrote the agenda." So, um, Lie Brook is going to do the NM Dash with Denise Woody for a little bit. And then we
also talked about doing a deep dive for our data. And as soon as I find it, I can tell you more. There it is. Okay. And then we're going to do uh there's an NMPED required course for EL uh identification because I I'll look tell you later in the report that we had uh the state visit us and then the whole staff are going to do a we're going to have a working lunch and so Mr. Rammit's going to give the test security training which is needed every semester. And then we're going to do the math curriculum review like Miss Sanchez uh discussed. And so if if any teachers or Mr. Hawkins if you could tell your teachers they have to have their notes from their review for their top three choices. So this will
help us move this along. And then at the end is our monthly um science PD. So, um, we're trying to do a district PLC group so that way we can all be tied in together for science. And then this year, uh, we're going to work really hard on having the math, um, completely aligned with both campuses from K through 12. So, if you didn't know that, we have different curricula that we use. So, hold please. Okay. Um and then uh the JOM meeting, we've had two and we've had one person come. So we rescheduled again and we've been telling the Navajo Nation um Department of Education Adobe that this is what happened. We're going to reschedule. So there it is at January 21st. We're going to reschedu for Zoom at 12 PM. I do have
a few interested parents who have been asking me uh via email and texting and asking if they can come and I'm like, "Yeah, it's on Zoom. You don't have to. You just need your phone." So, um and then of course there's no school February 16th. Um our NM dash is being written for this next semester. So, then I'll uh give you the critical action for that. Um let's see. And then the list of positive things going on at LRO. There was one student with perfect attendance for this fall semester and she was a prek prek student and so her prizes were um a blueey toddler scooter, a blanket, some school supplies and her certificate. And of course, if you remember, we give the kids with perfect certific attendance for the month. We give them the
coin for the book vending machine. And it's it's really fun because they come to our secretary, then they put down their certificate and they wait for the coin and then they go right out to the um the rotunda the lobby and then they go to the vending machine and then they select their book and it's really loud and it says uh one book coming right up and then it says keep up the good work and so it's really neat. So they they really love that and so she got her coin. Um we did get some A for Applebee's voucher for free kids meal and mozzarella sticks. So, that was going to be awarded to the um kids who had A's for fall semester. I think we have enough for spring semester, too. Uh capturing kids
hearts, you already heard Miss Sanchez's update, so I'll go by that. Um morning announcements are also part of the CKH um uh program. So, then now the pledge is in English and Navajo. And then it's evolved to have the Navajo word of the day. And I have my notes in my notebook because I'm a notekeeper. I have uh I have I actually write it in Apache and then what they say in Navajo. So I'm learning Navajo. So and then we have a CK statement of encouragement. Um the new pre preK playground was installed but I I just need to let you know that it was what was ordered was not necessarily for preK students. Um it does say I think it was um gosh was it ages three to to eighth grade through something with
it or something. >> Thank you. And so the contractor who came in said he lowered it a foot and so that way the prek kids could get onto it and then everything else is okay. So um that's that was the same foot playground for um Lebrook and for Gina and that was ordered with prek funding so you know and um water security electricity is has there's four spots now at the library school. So there's the three trailer spots and then my little RV spot which I'm super happy I'll be moving there pretty soon to have water and sewer and you can't believe how happy I am. So, um, Denver's Denver December's attendance improved. We were really happy to get 25 perfect attendance certificates for December and then 18 near perfect. That means they missed one
day. And so, that was really exciting because that's 43 certificates out of 62 students. And there's our enrollment. Um, our average attendance at our enrollment is still the same. So, you guys know >> that I don't have the screen. >> 62. Sorry. And, um, the average attendance is 56 per day. So, um, and we did just gain a student yesterday. So, now that's 63. So, um, we're excited about that. Things that need improvement. Um, after the state visit, uh, our Navajo language class needs more structure and more preparation. And so, we're updating our resources for the teacher. And then the state also sent us some updates from inped and Navajo Nation Do the bilingual teacher should be offered updated training and has not completed her teacher training to keep her certification. So we're following up
on that. Um the district is encouraged to purchase an EL curriculum for EL classes. And um FYI, it's supposed to be at both campuses. So there should there are EL students on both campuses. So there should be an e class on both campuses. So um Miss Sanchez has what you would call it first hour 8 to 9 um as the eel class and all of the Yale students are in her class so that way we're in compliance at Brook. So um she has a possibility of three curricula that she's going to purchase now. Um and then all district staff worked working with EL students are required to complete an annual um training for men and ahead. It's on Canvas and I just sent that out. I think I think it was last week I sent
it out and then we're also going to give time to have uh staff complete that for live book and our professional development day. Um duties and everything every day things are refreshed. Um, so I I sent out another email to Kitty about that. Uh, and then staff, we still don't have the seventh eighth grade teacher. We still have the long-term sub, but she's required to put the class agenda, lesson plans, and she has a mentor and she has a teacher of record, so we're in compliance for that. We are also encouraging this EA to become a teacher. So hopefully Johnson Ali update. Um, again, we had the two meetings and now it's rescheduled. the meeting um the bylaws um state one thing but then I made sure with N and Nation DoD that we have
the one person because that person was the last officer so the other supposed to be three and so we have one and I said the reason we don't have three is because the other two became employees of the district so they can't be officers and they can't they so anyway long story short we're going to do another one and we'll elect officers the surveys went because we're supposed to have surveys go out. The first time it went out, just a couple got returned and so I used the winter performance again. I kind of made it a business meeting a little bit before we started the kids singing and I did attendance, right? So we handed out the little prek prizes and then the second part was um the um JOM surveys and so 23 were
re received. So that was good. And so now we'll start looking through that and see what parents want. um bus routes. They're they we do have two bus routes, but they're currently fluctuating. So, I'm sending out daily um robocalls. And then I sent out a weekly note today so that way our our parents know. And you've already had the last two bullets of my report from last month. It's still the same. So, I stand for questions. >> Any questions? >> Thank you. if it's all right with our board as soon as Mr. Sanchez is down with his report as well tonight. Well, moving on to number three ad report. >> So, we have a couple of updates from our last meeting. We had our scoreboard that was giving us some trouble. That has since been
the controller has been replaced and the best way I can summarize is the people who are helping with that said that that was the best Christmas gift they could have ever had. So, thank you to you guys who helped with that. It now works beautifully. Uh we've had a couple of games. We have one right here in Lightbrook right now and I I apologize. I do not know how to pronounce the name of the school. It's uh DZ is what they call it for a short and we are knocking their socks off right now. So we're doing really really well here. Our girls beat them by a good amount. Our boys is 57 to 19. So we just finished the boys game. We did really well there as well. Uh Coronado, we're looking forward to
going to the Cuba tournament that's starting on the 15th. So we are excited about that. Our first game is ladies at 5:30 on Thursday. BPA finished up their regional competitions for both our campuses. So that went really well. We're excited for them. We Sorry. >> Oh, >> feel free to stop me if you guys want. Um BPA regionals went really well. They're moving on to state. that is going to be uh February 19th through the 21st at the Marriott Pyramid in Albuquerque. So, we're looking forward to that. We did have our online streaming at Coronado um was giving us some issues. Elite and Sean worked on that and it is now working beautifully. We are able to see it. I was able to see it at our la our last game. Thank you. Our last
game went um online. So, we are good there. We're keeping track of everything going on, making sure coaches have what they need, advisors have what they need. Uh, let's see. Overall, things seem to be going really well for the athletic and activities program, and I stand for questions. So, my understanding is that we're having practice during the school day to help like with the library kids and stuff. So, are those athletic kids missing out on anything that they should be in class for? >> No. So, they're in they have a class their actual class is assigned to be athletics. So, those kids get actually get a credit on their high school graduation credits as athletics. >> So, I brought that in for the schedule for middle school and high school. Uh most of the small
districts around New Mexico uh will typically have an athletic PE 7 period. So it counts if we label it correctly and Mr. Mic has worked that out with schedule for high school and mid school. So we get them home at least an hour earlier. So if they're varsity sports, they have seventh period athletics and then a shorter period out of school after school. The idea is to try to get the high scorers home earlier even if they drive still and then the kids mid school get the practice in sixth or seventh period. >> Yeah. Because then I've understood that they're having practice again after school. >> So they're doing both. >> Yeah. We're trying to iron that out. But that for varsity that's typical. So I can give you an example for my prior district.
All the varsity sports started seventh period. So if someone was in volleyball, say they were in volleyball seventh period and for an hour, hour and a half after school instead of two or two and a half hours after school. And then if they didn't play basketball, that young lady would go to either PE or another elective. And Mr. Manny's trying to make that work with our schedule. And we had some difficulty in the fall semester, but I think it's ironed out. >> Yeah. >> So that is a credit, four credit at the high school level. keeper places be at the mid school. >> Okay. I was just wondering if they weren't missing out on anything because >> and if we could afford it, we would run activity buses after school or after practice, but that's
out of the question right now. >> Thank you, Muff. >> Thank you. >> Moving on to it, Mr. Sorry about my voice. It might be hard to understand me. >> Um, so they're having internet issues here in Gina for the past couple days. Uh, we believe it's due to the weather with the snow melting, getting into the lines and, uh, that kind of thing. So, we have contacted Elite. I contact A and we worked with them and we're uh talking to Win Street to figure out what we could do to try to alleviate the issues here in Gina. Um now for Live Brook we are um we're working on getting Winstream up and running over there. We're still running into the issues of the firewall. Windstream doesn't want to allow us to use our own
firewall. They want us to pay $7,000 to use theirs. And it's not on 7,000. It was less than that. But basically, it would come out to it was bunch more. >> Yeah. And we already own a firewall that we paid a good chunk of money for. Um, and they don't want allow us to use our own firewall. They want us to be charged extra to use theirs. So, I talked to Bill today. He said he's planning on getting ironed out within the next couple weeks. uh talking with back and forth with Windstream to hopefully get us up and running on Winstream in Lightbrook with uh and so we could get off Starlink out there because Starlink were on a data limit uh in Light Brook and obviously we had issues with the Zoom today. Um
I'm going to work with Anna. We're going to try to figure out what went wrong with that today and ironing that out. So, we don't have any issues uh moving forward with that. And as far as it, that's all I got. >> The issue at live work with the firewall is not just us fighting with windstream. It is rec several other districts are having the same issue and Bill Mundy is now representing those as well. And uh it's the same issue at Chama Chama Valley schools. And that's fortunately because Anthony Cass is the RC president put some real force into getting it resolved. Thank you. >> Thank you. >> If it's all right with you, we'll send Sean home. >> Have a good night. going on maintenance update. Mr. Jeremy still on there. Jeremy, apparently
he's not there. I can tell you that you already heard about the sewer and water out at my Brook being completed and uh we're going to be adding some gravel uh around the RV spot. We don't want to do anything too permanent because once PSFA approves our match money, we'll do more permanent spaces for those mobile homes or modulars that go out there. And uh that'll help at least Montoya to have a little bit more comfort with the water and the sewer and and not have to fight the mud so much. So, and then you heard the update on the playground out there. So, we're pretty happy about that. and the kids are wanting to get out there and play and now it's too cold. Same thing here. This one is not completed on this
campus and uh just other than regular structural issues and finding the snow and leaks in the building, that sort of thing. That's why we got the bond pass. So, we'll just keep chipping away at it. That's all I can tell you about maintenance I think off the top of the head. >> Okay, moving on. Finance committee is solid. Good evening board. Welcome Mr. Valdez to the board and board. Um we've just had a has a busy um month even though it seemed like it was a short month in December, but um we've just been working on trying to close out the year. We've got um of course all the W2s 1099s that they've been working on. um and also doing a bunch of midyear um um budget revisions and adjustments. Now that we've got most
of the grants in place, um we'll be able to spread some expenditures across those grants. um we tend to um in order to to um get moving on those. We begin usually um spending the money some money out of operating and then we're able to move those expenses over once we get the the u grant um we get the awards but then it has to go through the process at peed. So um that's why you see some bars coming in with increases and adjustments. um as far as the committee report. Oh, and then um you'll see number nine on there. Um we're just asking for a continuing resolution of the um preapproval of the bars where we can submit them to peed after Mr. Kushman's approval and report those back to you at the next
board meeting. So, we would request that that be um accepted and approved when you um accept the finance committee. I'll leave it to Sandy or Lucy to address the committee meeting um and report on that. >> So we had another committee meeting. We support the reports that were shared with us. We had um minimal questions. I guess the concern that um is still ongoing is the cafeteria and the funding for that. So, it's still a big issue of ours and we discussed it in last month's meeting. So, still looking for some alternatives to help us um make cafeteria more affordable for the school. That's it. That's the big budget gap and will continue to be for now and I'll mention it during my presentation as well. >> Okay. Thank you. >> Thank you to superintendent
report. Mr. Krishna. >> Okay. We'll start with cafeteria. So this morning I did a presentation well Q&A and presentation with two other veteran superintendent at CES. It was for first and second year superintendent as well as the aspiring superintendent group. Probably about 50 to 60 people there. And the big question was cafeteria for rural areas because the cost of cafeteria and transportation had become exorbitant and generally the money coming in is not enough to cover what's going out. Um both of those both to and from bus routes. Many districts are struggling there. We are not. We're fortunate in transportation that we're able to cover our expenses right now with the transportation funding for the state. But the cafeteria, we're going to be seeking out uh vendors as we go forward this spring that might want
to come and uh provide services or piggy back off of Cuba or one of the other nearby districts and see if they're interested in helping us with meal preparation and bulk purchases, that sort of thing. We're going to have to get creative going forward because of the amount of money going out. We get the legislature to bring some money to rural districts. >> So that you would just have people just serving it here. >> Basically, there are districts and schools that have a central cafeteria to prepare the food. They bring it in a food service type truck or trailer with the trays made up or you know the food kept warm, that kind of thing. But uh it may not be possible here with the distance. I don't know. Yeah, we need to look into
it. I've experienced in the past that major food service companies often times don't want to serve or to contract with you if you're too far out because they need to make the profit as well. So, okay. uh had some ladies come uh through one individual come and ask if the ladies could continue to walk around in here uh in the mornings and I've tenatively approved that said as far as I know there's no policy against having the public use the facilities we've discussed in the past that this is public buildings like 4 or those ladies coming to walk in in the warm weather just want to give you information on that u we have them sign a waiver were just saying we're going to use it at this time and then provide a card key
that allows them to get in. My past experience, I've requested it be two or more individuals at a time if they're coming in to use the gym to walk or use the waiver, that sort of thing, and that cannot interfere with school activities. So, they're pretty happy about that. uh mentioned that uh next week the REC is having a legislative dinner in Santa Fe where the superintendent from our region along with the rec staff will be hosting our northern New Mexico legislators in Santa Fe or smoozing that's what we're doing. So um just keep you updated. We'll get to know them a little better. I meet with PSFA hopefully next week. Had an informal meeting with one of the directors today and we're just moving forward with the legislative session trying to make sure the
money stays available for all the matching that we're requesting and just uh we'll keep you going keep giving the information on that. They're not likely to see much movement on the bond and the match meetings for another two months, probably sometime in March after the legislative session is over. Okay? So, if you go to Santa Fe, just make sure you mention we need that money, especially if you talk to Joe Deian or anyone else on the committees. Okay. We had a very successful concession with central office. did the concession at the Dulcei game the other night and wore us all up. I'm getting too old for that, but we were on our feet the whole night, but Anna and Patricia with help from Beta and Sean and Bongo and who else was in there. Two
really good helpers in the elementary school. These little girls are all excited to help us. And the highlight of my night was standing over by the door uh early in the evening and a young man came up to me, Mr. Kushman. It was a a kid the first kid I ever suspended as an administrator at those schools and he's 40 years old. So you know older Mr. Maddox. So but uh he's doing great and it's always good to see former students when they're doing well. So um let's see there's an REC meeting tomorrow where we'll address the uh issues with Windstream and the elites helping with that as was mentioned. I did put in I may have mentioned this last month but I put in two legis uh legislative requests for capital funding. I requested
two suburbans for the district from the legislature. We'll see. I'm told that there's a good chance we we'll get approved for that, which would mean we could add to our fleet, better transportation for staff and students. Let's see. I'm talking on it and we apologize for not getting the minutes in the original packets to the board, but we're working on some changes to the agenda. And I would like to make a change if you all approve it where we have uh we combine presentations and action items. So if it's an action item, you have the presentation and then immediately take action instead of Yeah. Instead of having two separate places on the agenda, try to streamline our agenda. And then if you notice the minutes that you approved tonight were much shorter. There's no reason
to do the AI recordings and kill, you know, 100 trees to print those backups. >> That's okay. >> Okay. Well, maybe we need to kill I don't know with all the the kill off with the bark beetle and stuff. We'll have 20 if if the forest service will free it up for timber production. We'll see. But no, we'd like to streamline the agenda and also keep the minutes and just to what's required and not all that extra in there. Okay. And let's see. Uh lot of meetings going on. I'll be back and forth to the legislature. Um leave again first thing in the morning to go to the RC meeting in Espanola. I will be out of district Thursday and for the inservice working from home on Friday with medical issue on Thursday. So I'll
try to keep you updated on all that. Three of us are going to Washington DC here in two weeks, one week, I don't remember, two weeks and come back and go immediately to the school board conference at Santa Fe and we'll try to keep you posted on those dates. So um a lot of good things. Our enrollment, as you heard, is up. That's 187 total, which has been consistent all school years. I really do think the uh kids coming from Whitebrook has been successful overall. We did have a little bit of an attendance issue with a couple of them, but I think that's been resolved. >> It's been resolved for a week, >> but >> and I think if we had a bus that would run down towards Abby on that side, I think we
get more. >> Well, we do have a bus that goes well actually to the interchange. >> Yeah. But we can make it like pasties or somewhere. >> We cannot go into the neighboring district. We're not we're not supposed to go into the neighbor, >> you know, but uh but if we got the word out that the bus is already going to the limit, that would probably help. >> Yeah. Because I know there's people are thinking about or wanting to bring kids here, but transportation. >> Yeah. There's all kinds of restrictions on going over your district lines and that kind of thing, but if we can work it out with Espanola schools, they may actually like that with been a lot of talk about closing out a few elementary. So, um, if some of those kids
can come our way, that would be a plus for the district. So, we'll keep that in mind when we talk PSFA about the building. at the uh CES presentation today. We also discussed all the CTE programs and the success there and I got a chance to uh mentioned Miss Gyos to all these other superintendents and the programs that we're doing and uh CES is very grateful that Miss Gyos is able to present at the different events and talk about the success of all of our career and technical ed programs. So that's a fender and our cat and there's probably more but that's about all I can think of right now. So any questions? >> Any questions? >> Okay. Thank you, Mr. Pushman. Moving on to policies updates and discussion. Was there any updates on policies?
>> Well, I should throw in there that I think we need to go. We've mentioned this before. After it slows down, if it ever does, uh, but after we get through the legislative session, I think we still need to have a retreat and spend two two days probably, uh, going through ever all of our policies and procedures, updating them, and and do the strategic plan. And I'd like to get someone like David Chavis or Bobby Gutter to moderate that, keep us all on track and just push us through that process. Okay, discussion the next items number one just thank you. Hi, how are you? Good. Good. Good. Um so New Mexico PED of the education department uh changed the uh graduation requirements um in terms of they used to have what is called demonstration of
competency in the graduation requirement and that usually consisted of you had to score a certain score on like an ACT or an SAT junior test and you had to reach a certain score that was you could then that and show your demonstrated competency or if you took advanced placement courses or dual credit courses will have done away with that and now what they want to do is just every school district has to decide upon themselves um two elective credits that of their choosing uh to meet the meet this change that's the change instead of the demonstration of competency we're moving to two elective credits. And so as a team with Miss Gay and Mr. Hawz, myself, uh we discussed this and we came to the conclusion that probably two electives that we think would be
of value would be uh intro excuse me introduction to Microsoft Word and introduction to Microsoft Excel. And the reason being is those those two things as you hope I know many of you probably know come ac you come across them in many professions and so all the CTE pathways we're looking at many of those professions have uh I mean if you have those skills that's a plus for you if if you can if you can demonstrate that you can run a spreadsheet or you're very you know you're very efficient on a word processing pretty documents. Well, so we decided that just would be a good fit for our school district, especially since we have such a significant career and teched emphasis. So, that's we are asking the board if you guys would approve the choice
of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel as those electives. >> I have a question. Would it be just those two or would it be the whole Microsoft Office package? Uh well in our discussion we just those two were the two we decided upon. Yeah I mean could do a suite but we were just thinking um you know you do one elective one semester and then the other the second semester and another piece I need to add to that it's it starts with this particular ninth grade cohort. So it starts with that group of students who are in ninth grade currently. So it doesn't go across all grades. It's just that we currently have it's just the ninth graders start this year. So we're putting that in place this semester. >> Okay. Recommend approval of this change.
Motion >> motion to approve. >> Motion by Sandy. >> Second by all in favor. >> Motion carries. >> Thank you for appreciate you. >> Thank you, Mr. Mr. President, the next uh item covers several out of state trips. Um it wasn't I apologize for not listing them individually, but uh this is where Miss you had asked her to come back this month and discuss BPA OSA and FCCLA. And then I have a couple more additions after that discussion. So is that the only table for >> Yes sir. >> last meeting right? >> So the question back in last meeting was uh the longest was the number of students going to I think it was national. >> Yes sir. the dates. >> Yeah. So >> 40 BPA at Coronado with 11 from LI and 12 participating
in and six in the FCCLA. >> Yeah. And but I I think the board started to discuss a little bit in the table that that to cut the number of students attending the nationals because of the if you have 40 kids going on to nationals have the school. I mean so right you also discussed limiting it to upper class or unless they're on a team that makes the national competition. That's that's your discussion of this diagnos. >> Yeah. I know that's what I think that's what we're discussing the cutting it down to 10 or whatever amount of students that make it the top 10 and then uh try to do the junior seniors possibly not top and the alternative that we had discussed I did discuss it with this guy again is having uh rather
than a specific number, maybe just limit it to juniors and seniors who qualify for nationals and then it's something for the underassman to look forward to when they become juniors and seniors but also build the program in such a way or change it so that you say you have to participate, you know, three of your four years of high school to be able to go or some something along that line. Again, I was asked about that and Miss Gangos, can you hear us? Okay. Uh yes. Um and if I may, uh the um proposal is a blanket approval for those that qualify. So the number of students included in the letter uh reflect the number of active participants. So, for example, the first round for BPA regionals, we didn't have all students uh move on
to state and uh we won't have actual numbers until February 21st. This is the a proactive approach that we take every year uh to prep in the event we have students qualifying. I know uh I've mentioned before, we started out with two students in our organization and our first year no one qualified. Um competition is is really stiff. We're competing against large uh school districts. And so uh currently the request is a blanket approval for those that qualify. And it's our hope that we have students qualify to represent our our school in our state. Uh it's pretty competitive. It's a co-curricular organization that's an extension of the classroom. Um, and so I hope that that provides some clarification. Uh, BPA National Conference Registration opens February 15th. So, registration will already be open uh, 6 days
prior to us finding out if anyone qualifies. And so that puts us at risk of not um being able to register immediately if we don't have approval prior to um and so uh currently we're assigned to the main conference hotel. Uh and if we register late, it could jeopardize us staying at the conference hotel and uh transportation, additional transportation would of course add to the cost uh the overall cost. And so every year we ask for this blanket approval in the event that students qualify. And once we know who qualifies um I I report back to the board with an update on those uh qualifications. And I don't know if that helps. >> Did they compete like uh Zoom or something? Because I remember last year Estanola schools they didn't allow some or they put
a number of homes could go and the others were competing through Zoom. >> So we do have some uh the virtual competitions that I mentioned earlier. We do have a couple individuals that compete uh virtually um in order to be placed in the top 10. They have to go through their first round. If they make that first cut, again, because they're competing against the nation right off the bat, if they make that first cut, they'll be called for an actual presentation, which is done virtually. if they make that next cut, then they qualify for top 10 in the nation and they present uh in an expo setting. And uh we've been very successful. We were excited to, you know, again uh highlight the successes of our students. We've had many of our students as finalists
uh in the nation. We've had two championships in the nation. And so uh it just proves that the work that we're doing with our students uh is working and uh you know ultimately these are skills that they're able to carry on into college and careers. Our students have been successful with the Lannel scholarship and um several committee members that are in disbelief that our students are excelling at that level. Uh so you know it's a win-win situation for our students. Uh and it's our hope that we can support all students. Uh especially you know our goal here at the school is to you know empower our students to dream, believe and achieve and that's what we set out to do every year. Our students are setting goals over the summer. They're revamping. They're strategizing. They're
um creating different teams based on what worked and what didn't work. Uh and again these are all competencies that align with CTE uh the CTE framework and this data is uh reported to peed. So, um, our data looks really good and so again, it's it's our hope that you can support our students in their endeavors, especially to to compete at this level. >> Can you find out when who um qualifies? February 21st. >> So, our students will be competing February 19th and 20th. The awards ceremony is on the 21st. Registration opens February 15th. So the minute that we know we have students qualifying on the 21st, um it's recommended that we register those students immediately. And so it's helpful to have this prior approval so that we can begin that process to avoid additional costs.
So I think when I came in last spring there was a lot of discussion about I guess in the past if you take an alternative or alternate students and other students that might just be interested because there was discussion about the cost involved for the district and then the other concern is that you have students who do not participate in BPA but when you have most of the school gone what are those kids doing when they're left behind? And so again um the if this is an extension of the classroom uh we've been uh I mean excelling that those have been a couple of instances our numbers went up they decreased our involvement this year. Uh we don't have the same numbers as in the past. In fact our membership has declined because of the
cost involved. our students raise uh you know pretty much all their funds and I've had some students work the summer prior and they're saving their money in the event they qualify for nationals and they're paying for it uh upfront. Uh so again you know this is uh you know just another opportunity to to excel. >> I don't know. I personally think we should just approve it because it's a blanket and then she tells how many kids qualify and then we have another discussion at that time. >> The only thing Well, I mean it's up to the whole board I'd say but I think what Mr. Kushman said sounds >> yeah upper classman top 10. So >> how many uh kids are in BPA right now? Um, >> well, not every not everyone uh advanced to
state. So, we had students that did not advance from regionals to state. So, automatically they're um they won't be able to to qualify right now. >> How many have qualified for state at this point? >> Uh how many qualified >> per state? >> I want to say maybe about 20. I didn't actually count the numbers um but the list that I provided prior uh are the ones that qualified for state for the exception of the virtual uh competitors. Are we looking at 20 kids that might have a chance to go to nationals or is it >> they may they may um now you know the the other piece is uh let me consider I feel like if we limit our students, we're not providing access to all students. And and that's one of our goals
is uh to create equity. And so if we limit uh to only juniors and seniors, uh we're not providing equal access to all of our students. So, it's my hope that uh we'll recognize the the talents, the time, and the effort that our students uh put into their competitions. Uh and it's our hope that our students succeed and I hope that you can support us with that. >> Oh, I I would just to play devil's advocate here, there's a difference between equitable and equal. And so equitable would be setting a standard whatever that standard is and saying everybody has the opportunity such as um if you're uh if it's equitable you compete for two or three years and then you have the opportunity to travel later that's equitable. Equal is saying that how low a
grade that everybody can go and and and so on. That may not be equitable because maybe an underassman's uh knocking out an upper classman. I don't know if that's the case in BBA or not. I'm not familiar enough with it to know that. >> And it's typically for judged events, first, second, and third place advance from competition. >> What's the lowest grade? >> If it's a test, if it's a test, it's five. Um, it's grade level 6 through 12. just make it high school. I don't know. It's up to you, but it sounds like she's not. What's the most What's the highest number of kids you have this year? >> You You're frozen or locked out. I don't know if you can stop and find a slot where we can communicate. But did you hear
the question? What's the highest number? >> What's the highest number? >> Yeah, the highest potential number this year of students that could qualify for nationals. >> Oh, the highest number that can qualify this year for nationals. So, out of Liebrook, we have a to we have a total of 10 at the Liebrook Middle School. At Coronado Middle School, the highest number would be 13. And at Coronado High School, the highest number would be 14, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26. >> Uh, 28, >> 28, 57. So you're talking about 50 talking about 51 or two students could qualify. Uh there is a possibility and it's our hope that our students will do well. But given the level of competition, uh like I mentioned before, we've gone from maybe two students qualifying uh to a year where
we were successful and we had 30 plus 40 plus students qualifying with Coronado Middle, Coronado High, and Liebrook. >> I I would recommend that we just do upper class because if we're looking at library, we're looking at eighth grade. plus six plus six to eight >> six to eight that's 10 students >> or the other possibility again devil's advocate on the other side would be to say that we approve the blanket approval for travel tonight and then we'll know by the next board meeting how many qualified >> we won't know until after the next board meeting because the award ceremony will be February 21st >> I the >> I don't know what the answer is but we do issue a budget >> you know and I >> that's you know I can see both sides
of that argument the budget or we setting an amount in the budget that was the top that we would be able to >> but we don't you did last year >> we did last year >> but I I I mean I I don't know. I just wonder like you have half 40 students. Well, half of the high school, how many students we have in the high school or the middle high school as well? >> You said there's 28 in the high school >> and 13. >> So 136 about 54 total. Yeah. Well, I guess if they're doing the fundraising, if we want to kick the can down the road and say we're going to really address this for future, that's a possibility as well. But >> well, I think that has been an issue before,
too. It's the fundraising where we have, you know, the majority of our school is going to BPA and they're all fundraising and we're just bombarding the community with candy and you know all these >> Yeah, I know. I heard from numerous parents uh last spring, late spring is the new guy saying why does it cost so much and I didn't have answers. I I didn't know what was contributed in the past from the school operational budget or just was it all fundraising. What was the total you received from the school budget last year? Do you remember? >> Uh we we didn't receive anything from the school last year. Students fundraised um their entire part and so they were depositing money and everything. There was >> they paid for they paid for everything on their own.
including the sponsors travel. >> No, the the uh teachers that were uh they were funded through uh the school employee travel as shepherds. >> So yeah, what is the date you need to know? What is your drop down date that you need to know that kids are going to be approved to go? So the day that we will know for BPA will be um February 21st for HOSA um our students for their regional competition uh advanced and we'll know on April 11th. For FCCLA we'll know on April 1. And for FCCLA, we only have four students that advanced to state. And so, um, for HOSA, we have 12 that advanced. And, and so those will be the dates that we'll know. But registration opens early. If we miss those deadlines, it adds uh cost to
to transportation and and late registration fees. so much. >> What is your drop dead date that you need to know if the board is approving >> a limited number? >> If she finds out the 21st, who made it for for BPA? She finds out the 21st who made it to nationals. >> We decide we can decide on the 23rd or 24th. That's the Monday or Tuesday after she finds out the registration. >> Yeah, but she won't know until after the >> Yeah, that's what I'm asking. You understand what I'm asking? So when is reg so we'll need to register immediately when uh we find out. So we'll have to register. >> Okay. When does registration close? >> Uh it so uh registration uh ensures housing is at the host hotel. So this year New Mexico
will be placed at the conference hotel. um if if we don't make registration on time, we jeopardize being moved to a different hotel and having to uh cover additional transportation fees. And so, um it's recommended that we register immediately once we find out who qualifies. >> Yeah, the next board meeting is the 10th and that's why I'm asking. So, we do have one board meeting before if we want to try to seek u more information. Yeah, we won't find out until after the next board meeting. >> But if we're going to do that, I would recommend to the board that uh you choose two of you and we really sit down and hammer this out on what's going to be best for the district as a whole with Miss Gyos and the other BPA sponsors.
unless we move our February meeting to the 24th. >> But then well, you could always have a special to do a final approval if something changed or whatever for just that. >> I don't see an issue with the other members. They're low. >> No, >> so then can we approve this and then on the understand we'll go back to it or not? Well, well, you're going to probably some kids travel. You just don't know the parameters, right? >> I think >> unless we wait unless we wait until the next board meeting on the 10th. >> But we won't know the numbers then. >> I'm like, how about >> But you would know how many you want to approve or if you want to just do upper classmen or kids on registration. >> Yeah, but she
can't register till the 21st. Anyways, that's what I was saying. It was if we moved the board meeting to the 23rd or 24th, we would know the numbers that we could do an approval then on the numbers at that time. >> What date? >> It's a Saturday. the 23rd >> Monday >> because come February 10th we're going to be the same but we're not going to have numbers >> you want to move the whole board meeting so the 23rd miss are you hearing what they're discussing Uh, I'm having a hard time. I'm hearing something about the 23rd. >> Well, we're talking about moving the next board meeting to the 23rd or the 24th when you would have numbers. >> Okay. So, the the 23rd would be helpful. Um, it's always recommended that we have our
purchase orders uh ready to go so that we can register immediately. So, if we could do the 23rd, that would be helpful. And it's again our hope that we have students qualifying. >> Okay. So then with that we'll table it to the 23rd. >> You would need a motion for table. >> I motion to table this discussion till the 23rd when we have actual numbers of >> have a motion from Sandy. >> Second by Bill. All in favor? >> I. Motion carries. Okay. So, let me just clarify now that you approved that if you're honest, she's going to have to put out an announcement that the next regular meeting will be moved to February the 23rd. >> Okay. >> And regular time. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, Monday the 23rd, that'll be right after the
Broncos have won the Super Bowl. So, >> and what what's the the outcome for the FCCLA and the HOSA transportation request as well? So >> is everything tabled? >> 12 qualify for state. I mean right four qualify for state grants. How many qualified fora? >> Uh 12 12 >> 12. >> I wouldn't have issues with those moving with those. Those are reasonable numbers and the check rooms, right? Oh, but those are out of school, right? >> So, why don't you all make uh send we'll we'll talk individually. You can give me the questions you might have that we need to answer for that next meeting. Okay. >> So, I think the only problem for next meeting we're concerned is the VP numbers. I think the other two are fine. Correct. >> Everybody okay with >>
So, I motioned that we move forward with the approval for and FCCLA as is for out of state travel. Is that to include Oh, sorry. Sorry. Is that to include like the middle schoolers for wholesome MCCLA and everything as well? >> Numbers. >> So then if we for BPA if the board decides they're only going to do upper level people. Is that only specifically for BPA or would that be for all for HOSA and FCCLA as well? Yeah. On the middle school, right? Yeah. Let's see. We haven't discussed that yet on the middle school. So we have to on the 23rd We'd have to discuss that, >> right? I'm just worried about like 50 policies for BPA, FCCLA, >> right? Saying, okay, we're only restricting BPA kids to >> So, Miss, do you have any
uh middle school students in HOSA or FCCLA? >> Uh, no, we don't. We only have uh high school students. So, we haven't developed the middle school programs there yet. >> Okay. because it's only high school that >> and I'll throw another one that you mentioned that it'll also apply in the future. You want to be consistent with FFA as well going to nationals. So that's where this whole conversation started. >> So okay. >> So I think we're okay if you choose to approve those individually the way it's listed on the agenda. If you want you've >> so yeah. So Sandy made a motion to approve travel for HOSA and FCCLA >> table >> and table BPA to 23 second. So put in a second. So we have a motion by SI and a second by
all in favor. >> Motion carries. Okay. So to her going on the other out of state travel that would be under this is I got good news in the district office this few days ago I mentioned a grant that I applied for that was a little over $100,000 or up to $100,000 for um ex exposing upper classmen juniors and seniors to various career opportunities. And we were approved for just over $40,000 on that grant. And so that money I'm asking for the okay from the board to do out of state travel or include out of state travel possibly Arizona, Colorado, maybe even Wyoming to school like Wyotech. Mr. Mammoth would be involved with that. It would be for juniors and seniors only to go visit various universities and tech schools and so on. Um, but
we need to start planning. So, if you're willing to approve up to three separate trips, we would try to do those late in the week after basketball season's done. >> That would be the whole all juniors and all. would like to I would like to encourage all juniors and seniors to travel with those, but we have to work out a lot of things in the schedule with conflicts and so on if we can get them done during the school year. It might even be after BPA hosting FCCLA or the travel for their national competition, but the idea is to expose them to the various opportunities that they would have at these institutions. Uh it would be New Mexico State. I know that's not super popular around here, but UNM, maybe Highlands, >> actually have a
couple seniors interested in New Mexico states, >> but to hit other schools as well, you could go over to Lach to hit uh the Texas Tech campus over there, Eastern New Mexico, UT, that kind of thing. And have regional type trips. That's why I'm asking for three, just to make it three different regions. go over to Nappy and say these are career opportunities for some of our students, those sorts of things. Fort Lewis. >> So, but that money has been approved and Dice, I know you're on there. Do you remember the total that we got approved on that? >> I think it's 47,000. >> Oh my good. >> But it has to be spent this school year, which could move through J. So >> have a motion. >> A motion to approve. >> Motion by
Sandy. >> I second. >> Second by all in favor. >> Motion carries. >> Moving on to journal entries. We'll take number three. >> We still have >> school housing policy. >> Okay. The school housing policy. Um my discussions with PSFA is they would like to see that we are actively um uh pursuing what's best for the district on the match and be prepared to hit the ground running on the match monies in our housing areas. You've already approved some housing to go into upgrades here on campus, but it also we need to be proactive in allowing only certified staff at this time in school housing. um that would affect uh two of the residents right now. One is owned by the individual and the other one we have an employee that is in uh one
of the housing units. But going forward, it take effect July 1 should you approve it. Uh and then start cleaning up the areas of the campus so that we can be ready to break ground as soon as we get approval for PSFA. and that may be just leveling and putting in a new infrastructure with sewer and water at both campuses. So, that's part of what we're talking about here. And then also, we need to make sure that we're um actually carrying out the housing inspections, which we have scheduled, by the way, and I need a volunteer from the board to participate in that uh in February. >> All right. We'd like to send out notification to the residents, all of us that are in school housing that we would be doing housing inspections and I
recommend twice a year. We discussed it before. So that's what we're ask. What I'm asking is that we change our policy to allow you an issue with this. I guess when Dr. Carol was here. Some some superintendents have allowed like EAS to move into housing or maintenance and so on and it causes a problem when they're trying to get teachers certified teachers on campus and um so unless we specifically build units or allow units for other employees but the main concern here is certified staff. So yes, I'm looking for a change to the current policy. This is why you have to do three readings to say that effective July one. We uh allow only school owned modulars on the on school in the school residential areas and then only certified staff be in housing units
>> and and yes housing inspections is already part of your policy but we need to carry it. Did you have a motion? >> Motion bye. Second >> second by Sandy all in >> favor. That'll give me the opportunity now to notify those individuals well in advance. So hopefully transition on journal entries. >> No. >> How does state travel approval for CTSO national international conference? I guess that's different uh for miss. I don't know what that is. She >> I think she lost her. >> Okay. So, do we have any idea what that conference is or when it is? >> No, I don't. I wonder if that's not to all that. In her presentation, she talked about BPA and was at FCLA. >> Do you know anything about this? Is that just her? >> Tell me
that title again. >> CTSO National Conference >> conferences. career technical student organization. >> Yeah, I was asking about I thought that was some for just her. I thought it was separate. >> So I would recommend table or >> I may be at a staff conference possibly. I heard something about a state staff. I don't it was well yeah I heard something late this month that's all I heard I don't know very information >> Mr. Hus are you still on there? >> I am. What is that conference that Miss Gyos has her name on? CTSO national international conferences. Did you approve something like that? >> I'm not sure what that is. >> It's like that. >> It's CTSO is what it says on the letter. I think it's the same thing. >> Says BPA >> BPA
FA. >> Hey, can you hear me? Okay. we have on the agenda. Is it CTSo National International Conference? Is that what we've already been talking about or is that something else? >> That's the host. >> Okay. We weren't sure. So, all right. That's all we needed. So, we're >> Okay. That's all we need. So, we're good with that for now. Okay. Thank you. >> Okay. So, we've already >> general entries. We'll take letter A through H. Mice, is there any changes? >> The journal entries number 340 through 392. >> Yes. We're requesting approval of those. Did you have questions? >> I I have a motion to approve. I second. >> Motion by Miss Sandy, second by Miss I. >> Motion carries. Budget journal entries. >> Motion to approve. >> Sandy approves. Makes a motion to
approve. Second by Mr. B. All in favor? >> I think you need to turn in a new board member to be faster. Moving on to discussion approval of bars letter A to Z motion Lucy motion by M. Lucy second by Miss Anthony. All in favor I >> motion carries. Moving on to executive session. Mr. We have session. >> Yes. Um but we have some things to discuss. >> All right. Executive session notice is hereby given to the Himmons Mountain Public Schools Board Board of Education will meet in executive session pursuant to section 10-15-1 H2 of the New Mexico Open Means Act limited personnel matters to discuss personal personnel and personally identif >> personally identifiable PI and potential pending litigation. How do you vote Mr. Pedro? >> Yes. >> Miss Lucy. Yes, Miss Sandy. Yes, Mr.
Randy. >> Yes. >> And Miss Yes. >> The time is 8:00. The board will not go into execute decision >> and for the information of the public that are on there will be no action after session. >> Thank you everybody. >> Okay, so we're back in session. Time is 1842. Signing. >> Executive session notice is hereby given so that His Mountain Public Schools Board of Education has reconvened from executive session p executive session pursuant to section 10-14-1H2 of the New Mexico limited personnel matters. No action was taken. How do we vote? Mr. Randy, >> yes. >> Miss Antimate, >> yes. >> Miss Sandy, yes. Mr. Pedro, >> yes. >> Miss Lucy, >> yes. Okay, moving on to uh announcements. Next board meeting is February 23rd here at the board meeting. Have a motion for motion
by >> second by favor. Motion carries.
