It is regular board meeting of the Gimenez Mountain School Board of Education will now come to order. Time is 60. Uh okay. Uh, Sandy, could you call the attendance? >> Yes, sir. Mr. Robert V. Hill, >> present. >> Mr. Randy Cordova, >> present. >> Miss Sandra Emler Hawkins, present. Miss Lucy Morphine, >> present. >> Miss Antonet Serrano Martinez, >> present. >> Thank you. Moan. Uh, do you want to do the pledge of >> allegiance? Okay. To the flag >> of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> That's Dice trying to get in. Sorry about that. Okay, thank you. Moving on to number four, approval of agenda. Anybody have any questions or changes or no? Okay. Seeing that

there's no changes, I have a motion. >> I move. >> Motion by Miss Antonet Serrano. Second >> by Miss Lucy. All in favor? I >> I >> motion carries. Moving on to number five. Approval and signature of minutes for letter A regular board meeting April 15th, 2025. Is there any questions? >> No. >> Robert, Sandy, >> no questions. I motion to approve. >> I'll second. >> Motion motion by Sandy, second by Robert. All in favor? >> I. >> Motion carries. Going to number six board recognitions. Mr. Sprint recognitions. >> No recognitions. >> Right. That's down here at the on the presentation. Okay. So, moving on to number seven is public comment. And if you're standing any comment, you have three minutes. So, >> request president. >> So, this other individuals that they're signed up Oh,

okay. Okay. So, it's Vicki. So, Leo, you had requested to speak during public comment. Are you online? >> Can everybody else hear me? >> I can hear you loud and clear. You're loud and clear on my end. >> All right. She had requested to be on. I guess if she's not on. >> Okay. Moving on to the presentations for an open floor discussion. Number one, BPA. Miss Crystal Gagos. Okay, let's see. Can you hear me now? Okay, so we'll start this again. Uh, Mr. Chair, members of the board, Superintendent Kushman, um, it's an honor to be here today and we're getting a lot of feedback. Yeah. Are you on mute? Okay, how about now? Okay, let's get there's a charm. Okay, so um it's an honor to stand here before you all. Uh we just

competed at the national level um our members for business professionals America of America represented the state of New Mexico with class as well as our district. And so um I went ahead and sent a share request to to share a couple of pictures And so, um, I'd like to to recognize our students for the great job that they did at nationals. Uh, so this is our entire group. So, we have our, uh, library students and Coronado Middle and High School. Present in this group picture. We have here we have our computer animation team. We have a visual design team or actually their website design. We have video production team, our sack and visual design team and uh we also have a combination here with our digital game design. And so um looks like we have

a group of students missing on that one. It probably didn't catch. So then we have our other visual design team and you can see them right back here. Uh so I'd like to recognize all of our students. We had three teams in the top 10 in the nation. So we had Liebrook placing ninth in digital game design. We had our Coronado Middle School team in visual design placing fifth. So they were also top 10. And our high school video production team uh placing seventh. And so we have a couple of our representatives here to to share a little bit about their experiences. uh and we're hoping that they can uh share some of their projects as well. So hopefully the technology will cooperate. But again, we want to thank everyone for for the support throughout

the year and uh we're just excited to see the success of our students. So we have Ethan the Alpondo. He's representing the computer animation team. where he starts. I want to say the most important job in the district. He delivers coffee to my office almost every morning. All righty. Um, I'm going to request to share a screen so I could present my video that got us to nationals. Um, So, >> I'm just going to play it without audio. It does have a voice over, but I'm not sure if it'll catch I first decided that I wanted to continue my 3D animation team when the senior that introduced me to it graduated last year and I had to actually make a swath swap from Blender, which is a free to use for everyone modeling and animation

to Maya, which is a more industry standard version that is free for students but around $200 um for like outside use. So we first had to draft it in a storyboard to see what our idea would be. We were given a prompt of a future Martian city. And so we made it uh where they live, what would they eat, and how would they get around? And then it went through a few ins and outs with deciding if we wanted to have a rocket go to Mars and then first colonize it or if it should be like a fusion a future Martian city. We decided on the future Martian city. I then modeled and animated everything through Maya until I had to add everything and transitions and the voiceovers and music in Adobe Premiere Pro which

uh sadly you cannot have heard through my screen sharing sadly but I had me and each of my team members do the voice over. I had the introductory and ending of it introducing and exiting the Martian city which we named the Red Horizon. I had Santos Martinez explain the agricultural and societal effects of architects and the jobs that were needed. And I had Naomi talk about the whole um moving aspect of hoverboards and teleporters. And I had Malays introduce and show off one of the apartments in the Red Horizon. After all of this, we then had to create our script and competed in state, which was the first time I've had to beat it, and then went on to nationals where we competed as well. Thank you. >> Good job. So I was a part

of the video production team and on my team it was me, Alicia Gyos, Chassen Hario and Ocean Morphi. And so for our project we had to create a 3 to five minute video on a certain topic and our topic uh that was provided was on um the farm-totable movement. And so we knew of the restaurant Farm and Table in Albuquerque. And so we contacted the owner and once we got her approval, we then went out to her restaurant to then capture um the farm and then like how they um the movement, how it goes to the table to then like as dinner and stuff. And so we competed in that. And so at regionals we placed first. We went on to state. We competed again. We placed first at state. So then we made it

to nationals and at nationals we competed again to make finals round. And so in um this specific uh subject the video production once you make finals round you have to the next day you have to create a one minute video um in four hours. And so you don't get your topic until that morning. And so you have to kind of plan it all out, record, um, edit and submit all in that four hours. And so this is our video that we created in the 4 hours. And so our topic for that our topic for that we had to create a one minute pro promotional video for the hotel and that's where the conference was held at. >> Thank you. Thank you. >> And so that's the sort of nationals will kind of use is um

so that was the pin. So, uh, each year for nationals, all those schools will get that pin and that's kind of how we all like start out and everything is with like each kid gets like five or six pins and then we go around with other schools from like different states and stuff and we just trade pins and each state has their own unique pin and so it's kind of all just about like talking with people and getting different pins and stuff. So, it's one of the fun things you get to do at nationals and everything. It's it can get competitive sometimes too and stuff, but so that's one of the fun things and experiences we get to do. But me and my team this year, we're the website design team. Uh this includes Malikai

Valdez, Adam Vondo, and Alfred Gonzalez. So um our theme this year was our local BPA chapter. and we had to make a website that included different things from last year's BPA and um what we kind of did that year. So, we included a bunch of pictures, a bunch of information about BPA, different things we were doing around um Gyena for BPA, like whether that was fundraisers or like events just trying to help BPA. So, we had that. Um, we didn't place top 10, but I think we still did pretty good this year. We had done it last year again, too. But I felt like we did a lot more better than we did last year, and so definitely improved and everything. So, it was it was pretty fun and everything. Got to learn teamwork with

all my friends and everything and kind of learn each thing about them. And with the website, too, that was a challenge because you have to really make it so it impresses the judges. But sadly, I don't have anything to show you our website, but um we did put a little bit of effort into it and everything. So, it was pretty fun. >> Thank you. So again, I'll just go ahead and and thank everyone, the community, uh families, parents, everyone who who make this uh >> recording out loud >> reality. Um at this time, um Miss Alberta will be online to to say a few words, um on behalf of the library chapter. Alberto. >> Yes. Yes, I'm here. >> Okay, go ahead. You can go ahead and and highlight the successes there. >> Hi, good

evening board members. Um, my name is Alberta Julian. I'm an EA at Lbrook School. Um our I'm happy to say that our our students uh made nationals and um uh and they were it was an exciting trip for them. Um there was a few new members of B for of BPA um which they you know finally got used to you know being far from home. Um, but I think it was a really good experience for uh our students. Um, they got to see a lot of things um out there um in Florida and then a few of them don't didn't want to leave, they said. But I'm like, uh, we need to come back to school. But um, they enjoyed everything. They went to the workshops. um they they dressed out professionally the whole time

and um they just ultimately didn't know that that was what BPA was about and there are many things that um they can do and uh accomplished through BPA and um I did um communicate the meeting for tonight through to the parents and the students as well through email and text. Um I don't see I think I see a few but um yeah so our sixth, seventh, and eighth graders they enjoyed themselves and I'm thankful that um we have BPA and for you all to actually um have us actually go on these trips and um uh this is going to be the second year for digital game design. Um they they made state and then they made finals. I believe they made ninth place and overall 12th in the nation. So that was good. And then

our digital our digital citizenship made I believe the um I don't remember but it was high up there but they still tried their best and then they got to where they got um being in BPA and thankful for Miss Crystal for everything she does. And um if you have any questions for me, I'm I'm here to answer any questions at all. >> Thank you. >> Mhm. >> So I have a question for the students. Is this something you guys will pursue after you leave school? like when you go to college, if you go to college on what you're working on. So, I do not plan to go into any 3D animation or any branches of work that involve it sadly because I believe I want to go pursue a airline career as a pilot. But

I believe the opportunities that BPA provides to all its students, whether it be the array of competitions or the socialization and workshops you get to attend and the opportunities to branch out are unlike anything else that I've ever done before. And I'm grateful for the opportunity and support from all of you guys. And I would also like to thank the Skyos for allowing us to do these competitions. So even though I'm not going to go into a business or 3D modeling animation job, I'm still thankful to be able to build these experiment experiences of being able to speak up and give my outlook and everything to help me prepare for the future. >> Thank you. just say that I think it's amazing these opportunities our students get across both campuses and I've really enjoyed watching

the LIbrook cohort grow um and just you know embrace this and take on more and I think it's really exciting that we're able to include both campuses in these nationals and state and and all that. It's really awesome to see the difference it's made over the last few years. So, thank you, Miss Julian and Miss Crystal. >> Thank you. You're welcome, too. >> Thank you. >> Safe. >> Okay, moving on to number two. OSA Crystal. >> Okay, we're uh excited to announce our successes in HOSA future health professionals. Uh back in April, we uh competed at our state conference in Albuquerque and we had a total of eight students qualify for our international competition in Nashville uh now in June. And so I'd like to recognize those students for the community awareness competition. We have

Melody Chakon and Aiden Chakon. And we have our public service announcement team. They place first at state. Um and in that team we have Ethan Vielando, Ariel Salasad, Analysis Garcia, Osha Morphine, Alicia Gyos, and Malaysia. And so um again, they'll be competing at the International Leadership Conference now in June. So again, thank you for all of your support. Um we're excited to see uh again the success of our students. It's amazing what they're able to do um you know within these competitions. So thank you again. Thank you. >> That uh one of the things I asked to implement was whenever we send staff or students to an activity that they present to the board. And we had a group go down to southeast New Mexico about as far down southeast as you can get to

jow and watch a rocket launch and possibly consider this program for the future of our kids here in campus mountain. >> All right, members of the board, our superintendent, Mr. Kushman, our um school principal, Mr. Hakus um teachers and staff community members um and to everyone who's here tonight. Good evening. I'm Miss Irish Judet. I'm a middle school high school science teacher. Apart from that teaching steam elective and hydroponics and it's my pleasure to be here today presenting and sharing with you all our experience during the 2025 rocket launch um in J New Mexico held blast April 23rd to 24th. So these are the freshman students from Corona Coronado High School who had an exciting and wonderful opportunity to attend the rocket launch event in Jaw which all the way to south um part of

New Mexico. This was hosted by um Valley Rec 8 and Systems Go New Mexico. It was a two-day event with about 12 participating teams from different schools such as Jaw Hubs, Logan, Mute Tech um from Texas and others. We are very um fortunate that we aside from we are the only visiting team where um the team the systems go team were able to tour us around even at the area where they launched the rockets. So as you can see we have Mr. Dave showing he's what he he was a former superintendent and friend of Mr. Kushman um showing the students the basic parts of the rocket, how it is structured. And then we also have um freshmen looking at because before they launch the rocket, they have uh each participating team had to undergo different

stages um making sure that a rockets are good to go. And they were able also to um meet other teams from different schools where this is uh the team from Jaw High School shared how they come up with the strategy and modification of their rocket. And I'm going to there's also some videos. We had an opportunity to be up close um in the rocket launch. That's the rocket launch area. And that's the student created um engineered rocket and a different we came in day two so we had about five or six schools participating >> able to make this screen size >> very thank you >> uh you can click present >> full screen okay there you And there are videos in the next slide. So usually they don't allow the students. Here they go. We

couldn't even find it. >> There's one more video. So, so those are all um student made uh rockets and they have different strategy as to how they can make it fly as higher as possible. as like 15,000 or 20,000 ft and we were so amazed because it looks like we were been like um astron astronauts or something like that and students were really I was there um and here are some student feedbacks um from Martin the chair um we have watching rocket launches was not only a very fun experience but it was an also uh it was a it was also an educational trip learning about how the rockets work and all the work that goes into them that's from Martine I think it was a very cool and fun to go watch. I think

it would be a fun experience to actually make a rocket and see how far it would go up in the sky from Skyla. It was nothing like I had expected. The environment is very supportive and just seeing all the work people put to create a rocket is jaw-dropping. Overall, my experience at unforgettable. I would soon like to participate in the competition like that from MIA and it was very impressive in the rocket launches. I didn't expect how far and cool it was. It launches. It was unforgettable overall. They had a really wonderful and unforgettable experience when but by the time we came back here they wanted to build a rocket. So that's the goal. Um this is part of the program systems go and that's the goal this year as a science and steam teacher.

I wanted to have the opportunity to the kids to bring that program in our school aside from competing you know that's the students that we saw and observed there. They're really like they've done this many times. So we were we've we've done rockets but it's made by paper. But I told them, you know, this can be an a a stepping stone um to go that far. So this hands-on experience gave students a firsthand look at real world rocketry and engineering through a program that is quite literally um rocket science. Students observe student engineered rockets by different school teams and they learn about design principles um safety protocols, flight physics and importance of collaboration in science and engineering. So the experience sparked curiosity, inspired future career interests and brought learning to life outside the classroom. And

before I close this one, a heartfelt thank you to our administration team, Sir Mir Kushman, who invited us to be part. Actually, Mr. Dave told us they've been inviting the the school, but this is our first time to be there. Our principal, uh, Mr. Gos, our CTA coordinator, and Mr. Mafet for the logistics um in order to make this trip possible and you know your support gave students a rare and unforgettable opportunity to connect classroom learning with real world applications. It is indeed rocket science and our students were thrilled to be part of it. So the systems go experience has left a lasting impression and marks the beginning of what we hope we will be more STEM opportunities. So hopefully we will have a teacher training in July and then that's the start and hopefully

we can implement this program to our students as an elective next school year. Thank you. >> Thank you. >> Weldon is the gentleman that owns Elite Services that handles our technology in the district. He's the one that founded this program when he was the rec director and uh Spaceport, Virgin Galactic, NASA are all involved in the program. Any student who participates automatically has a scholarship. It's a small scholarship, but a scholarship available to New Mexico Tech and uh it opens up all world and it's for all levels, multi-age classroom, and they can choose between science or math credit if they do the course throughout the school year. And uh it's also good because you can start it at elementary level with the little coke bottle rockets and then CO2 rockets and just kind of build

it as a a program throughout their school career. So it's a lot of fun, too. Moving on to number three, student achievement award. And this award for excellence in student achievement goes to Miss Alysia Gos. >> She's online. Okay. Okay. She's online, but this is for the board. Wanted to recognize her many achievements in high school. Okay. The other award we have for excellence and student achievement also is for Mr. Sean for all Moving on to board information discussions under board information discussions letter A business office report Darice Sutherland. >> Good evening board members um Superintendent Kushman and attendees. Um tonight my report um includes just some information regarding um the business office um weekly meetings. We are continuing to meet weekly um focusing on um issues that are surrounding um business the accounts payable

payroll the day-to-day operations as well as working on um developing plans to work on the corrective actions that we submitted u in response to the audit findings. So that's one of our main priorities. Um, also we're currently trying to get all the grant applications submitted um and um finish out the the grant year um current grant years as well. Getting all the um reimbursements requested. Um we have um budget adjustments of course you can see those at the end. We're working on those. We're looking at outstanding purchase orders to see um which ones are still um in effect and which ones we no longer need so that we can actually determine our um cash balance. We did um we are as I mentioned working on our budget that is due to peed on Friday. So

we were um getting all that information together to get to them. Um we did have a community budget planning meeting and um I think it was successful. I think it was mostly staff. I think we had one or two parents um that attended and we um had it live at the boardroom in Guyana and we also um zoomed it out uh live to live feed to Liebrook. So we had about four or five people from Liebrook that attended as well. So, I thought that was was good and we intend to continue those kind of um opportunities for the staff and the community in the future. Um our budget timeline like I mentioned is um it is due to peed this Friday. So, we will be working on um finalizing that. Um also, we have to

submit our calendar and I know that's on for discussion. I have it now. I don't know if that's something that Mr. Kush wants to address at this time or in his report, but um that is due when we submit our budget. They want to make sure that we are meeting our um >> We can discuss it now if you'd like. That's fine. >> Okay, that's fine. As you all know, we have a mandate to meet um the hours of instruction, not necessarily days. So we have to balance the hours of instruction with the our teacher contract days which is 162 and a half um and get personal uh or professional development built into the calendar as well. This is the calendar that we um developed at this point is just a proposal and I know

Mr. Krishma will talk about that because they've been having some meetings um today regarding um some of the is changes and some of the suggestions that we have regarding the the uh calendar. Mr. Kushman, >> hand it out to the board. Um this is really still just a draft until we get it approved, but uh we had the initial meeting on the calendar. And the way I've done calendar um planning in the past is to find the end date that we want and go backwards with the number of required hours. And so I had a proposal that we brought uh to the union representatives and we sat down late this afternoon. In fact, we ended probably at 5:30 this evening. And that's partly why we're a little discombobulated. But uh we came up with this

rough draft. originally you can if you look at the month of May uh well let me go back when I first started in the district in February one of the uh first things I heard from parents and community other community members was why are we going so far into the summer? Another uh common concern or complaint was that we did not have a traditional spring break. So, we listened to those comments um and took those into consideration in planning and the calendar I had originally proposed took the Memorial Day weekend in May and worked backwards from there. Uh you'll see here though, it shows three extra days beyond that holiday because we had to add these days in somewhere to meet the new requirements. I'd also like you to note that their inservice days are

not on this current calendar and we agreed uh with union representation there that we would uh meet again in the next few days and plug in the required inservice days. There's a lot of debate across the state right now what the new regulations uh or how to interpret the new regulations as far as required inservice days. A lot of disagreement between school districts and the peed. Uh, as you know, the governor is um pushing to get rid of 4day school week and she's challenging her loss in the lower court at the appellet court level. And um that had a lot of impact on the way inservice days are counted. So for instance, we can't do certain inservice days on regular school days if we're on a 4-day week. They cannot be held Monday through Thursday

if you're a Monday through Thursday week. So, we're going to have to come up with Fridays uh before the school year, after the school year, th those sorts of things. So, uh consider that when you're looking at this. So, this current calendar has the correct number of days, 152 instructional days, and that's considering 7 and a half hours of instruction per day of school. That just meets the requirement necessary. uh it does not include um snow days or emergencies like the water break you had or a power outage and those sorts of things, but I was sharing that there's plenty of ways around that, especially now that we're able to teach virtually. So, if we have a snow day, we still try to meet virtually and not have to make those days up. So, I'm

not too concerned about extra days on the calendar at this point. This would show the last day of school being May 28th. Uh three days of school that week. U and then going backwards from there and you can see the totals at the bottom per student. Um I would not pay much attention to staff days at this point. In April, we have sovereignty day is listed as uh the 27th. Although we had a discussion, is it actually the 27th or the 16th? We just said we'll be flexible on that. but we believe it's on the 27th. Um, we also discussed removing the holiday the Monday after Easter, but uh, consensus was that much of our community and especially staff members would take that day off anyway. And that leaves a short staff because it's around

Easter and with church activities and so on for a lot of our um, clientele for lack of a better words. Um, we decided to keep the Thursday uh before Easter and the Monday after Easter as a break. Go to March. This adds in a traditional spring break. We did uh consider the schedule at Cuba and Bloomfield schools as well as Northern New Mexico College and their spring breaks. This matches their spring breaks. In February, we still have President's Day holiday on the calendar. in January, a lot of discussion, but we decided to make Martin Luther King Day an actual school day because it's so close to Christmas and rather than taking it off and having to add it back at the beginning and so we would require some cultural activities and so on in the

curriculum revolving around that holiday. The Christmas break or winter break uh is two weeks and it falls naturally this time. It doesn't always do this, but it seemed to be a natural break there for Monday the 22nd of December through uh January 1st. Still getting the two weeks. November has a slight change. Uh Thanksgiving remains the same. Thursday, Friday off, but rather than taking Veterans Day off of school, we are required under state statute to have election day closed. Schools are required, all public schools are required to be closed now on election day. So doing that on the 4th and then on Veterans Day, uh we go back I've been in districts that go back and forth on whether to have school, we would again do some special activities for our local veterans at the

school and honor them in the curriculum and throughout the school day with presentations and so on. So we would have school on Veterans Day. uh going to October. Um let's see. Uh we're looking at October 9th as parent teacher conference. Uh depending on where you fall on what to call uh Columbus Day, Indigenous People's Day, the fall break, we took that off of the calendar rather than adding that that extra day to the beginning of the year. Uh, and so of course that's open for discussion, but um, we would still we would call that a school day. And then in September, ignore the lines around the 17th. None of us know why those lines appeared. I'm not sure there Monday the 1st is Labor Day. We wanted to protect that because most families consider that

end of summer and have family activities at the end of summer. Keep that federal holiday. And then school on this calendar would start on August 4th for students and it would start on July 28th for staff. So staff would come back uh well on this calendar the 29th. We I I have requested from the union I want three days of inservice at the beginning of the school year and we would plug our other inservice days in throughout on Fridays and dates we agree upon. new employees would be required uh to add an additional day to their uh calendar to no matter what experience they have in other districts. That gives us a day at no extra cost to the district. We agreed that uh we would require all new employees to the district to come

in and do all their paperwork and so on and a day that didn't affect being out of other inservice and we all agreed upon that. So, uh, another couple things to note on this calendar is, uh, trying to plan kind of a mini conference for all staff members together, uh, at the beginning of the school year. That's why I'd like three days from the staff on th on those three days and they can we'll plan in the day of uh, teacher preparation room preparation prior to that, probably on that 28th. And then um for the parents sake and something you all might be interested in, I've uh approached the union and the teaching staff with the idea that the first day of school at least for secondary that's listed there on August 4th would start

late in the start at about 2:00 in the afternoon as more of a open house kind of day where we have tables set up all like in the Gomez gym and so a parent comes in with a a child. Let's say your child is enrolling in school. You go to table one, get all the paperwork done at one time for enrolling your child. You go to the next table to do the income paperwork we need for free and reduced lunch. Um we have a session with all the coaches about the requirements for activity and athletics that anyone considering athletics for the year is required to attend with their parent an MAA required meeting at on that day. Um, and then we would have a mini schedule where the parent and their children have the opportunity

on the secondary level to go to period 1 for 10 minutes and then the bell rings, go to second period, go to third period and so on and have the teachers talk about the requirements that they're giving that year, kind of a syllabus that you'd get in college, the requirements for the school year. And we would run that many schedule two or three times for parents that have more than one child in school. elementary could start a day or two later because they're not required the same number of hours. So, um that's this basic schedule and so I'm asking for your approval with the basic schedule and the flexibility to add the required in service days once we agree at our next meeting which we set up for next week on Thursday. So, this meets

the state requirements for time in the classroom and it will allow us to get um the calendar submitted with the budget should you approve it. >> Any questions? >> Is it on the action lands? >> It is. It's part of the budget. So, it can be as we look at the budget and uh it would be added in one way or the other. you can make the comment along with this calendar as presented or your choice on that. >> So the seven and a half hours uh starting time of school and ending time of school >> it has to change a little bit. It would start the first bell to be in class actually in class would be 8:00 rather than first bell at 8:00 and a few minutes later and we would have to

end at 4 to meet the requirements. And keep in mind that we did not put any half days of school on here, short days, because if uh the state regulation considers it a full day of school, if you go through the lunch hour at school, they still count it as a full day hours wise. So, this this meets all of those requirements. Uh field trips have to be uh are supposed to be on outside of the Monday through Thursday, even if they're instructional trips. There's a few caveats to that that we're trying to iron out with peed, but that's part of that discussion statewide right now. So, okay. So, the when's the last day of school this year? >> It for staff it's June 12th and for student what is it the >> So, are

you guys going to have summer school or So that's going to leave the kids pretty much full year, you know, just going to school because you're going to start August school in 20 days. >> So of course that's not required. That's for parents who choose to have their kids come for the literacy program in the summertime. And it this if we go to this for this next school year, next summer, a year from now would be a more traditional summer. >> Yeah. I mean, just cuz people I mean it seems like they'd be the students would be burnt out. I mean they'll have like what couple of weeks off before they go back to school. >> Yeah, there are parties in Santa Fe of course who have been pushing year round several years. And just

for your information, many of the school districts, large and small, across the state, are dropping out of the extended learning opportunity. It it's not bringing in the income to schools as it was promised um by the current administration. And it's also burning students out. They're finding attendance uh rates are dropping like a rock. And so the last one I heard about was down in uh Clovis schools is dropping their summer program completely. I believe it was Clovis something to think about for next year. >> That's all I Dice. Is that clear enough on the calendar? >> Yes. Thank you, Mr. Kushman. Um, we will bring the the calendar back at the next meeting because we still have some input to put as far as the final um calendar for you to vote on. So, that

will be presented and it'll be on the agenda on a June meeting as well as the budget. the final budget approval. So, we'll be presenting that in June. >> So, so when is the budget due? >> The budget is due Friday, but the calendar can be submitted um later if we have a draft. We can present that and then have it approved for the bud along with the budget in June. If they choose to tonight, they could say it's approved with superintendent being able to add those days as negotiated. >> Okay. Add it in with the budget tonight >> and just say approve the calendar uh with those caveats that I mentioned if you're comfortable doing that. >> Otherwise, we can wait and just submit the draft to the state with the budget. >> Okay.

Is there any discussion from uh Robert or Sandy? >> None from participated in the community meeting. >> Okay. Okay. Moving on to letter B. Principal report. Mr. Hawus. Can you hear me? Can I get the mic? Can I get the mic? Good evening. >> Live Brook. >> Good evening everyone. Um, yeah. So, my report it's kind of the same as uh as last month, just a couple of changes. So, we did uh send out the survey letters for staff uh last month as but we have received them all. We've already sent out our letters of intent. Uh there's a few uh that came back that they're not returning. So, we'll be those positions have been um posted. Uh we'll probably be looking uh I've been starting to look go look through reap and uh see

who's available and we'll start setting up uh interviews for those positions uh here pretty soon. Hopefully starting uh in the next week or so. Uh as far as the building is concerned, uh right now everything seems to be okay. Uh last uh week we had a little issue with our uh Starlink, but that was taken care of with our internet. Uh transportation. Uh we're still looking for bus drivers at Lightbrook. We're still having to do a double route. Uh we do have a couple of drivers that do activity bus drivers for us, but um they're uh one of them is considering to uh come on board full-time as a bus route driver. So, we'll be working on her to make to make that uh decision and hopefully she'll come back. >> Is that is that

for Lbrook or? >> Yeah, for Light Brook. >> For Light Brook. And then we're looking like Mr. Cman said if we can pull it off so we can do a route from Lightbrook to uh to Gina and we have one person that's interested in that. Uh she's kind of going through her process of uh getting her license. Uh student enrollment. It's kind of stayed the same. Uh we've dropped a couple of students, but we're pretty much 64 at the Dbrook and 112 in Gina. Uh professional development, we uh took about 10 staff members, including myself and Mr. Kushman, to Albuquerque on April 9th and 10th to Albuquerque to a special ed conference. Um the special ed conference, uh some of the teachers were said, "Well, I'm not a spec teacher." But they but we felt

it was good for them. They went over through a lot of uh sped a law which I feel like every teacher needs to understand the the laws on sped on um they got into a suspension. How many days can a student be suspended? How can they be removed from the classroom and so on. So there was a lot of good information there for uh for myself and the teachers. Uh testing, we're just about finished testing. We got one more test coming up and that's the IMASA and then we'll do our end of our end of the year uh testing on our station and then NWA once we get those results and then we'll kind of take a look at the data. Uh hopefully for the next board meeting I'll share that data for you guys

and see what see the improvement or or no improvement but I'll share that data with you on the next uh board meeting. Uh so we had uh the 14th we had field day here at Gena and uh everything went pretty well. Um there was no issues to to report. Um graduation was uh this past Saturday. Um it went great. That was a a real nice graduation. Um for the field day, I want to acknowledge uh Michali Pia. she really took the lead on that and uh in organizing all the events and she really uh did a very good job and Miss Edith for uh doing taking care of graduation. Graduation's uh it's a lot of work to uh to to schedule the every the guest speaker to do everything that's uh setting up. It takes

a lot of work. So I hats off to her. She did a very good uh job. Um, that's all I got. I stand for any questions. >> Well, I I want to also thank whoever did the Miss Edith probably the the decorating and the seniors. They did a senior. Yeah. >> Yeah. I know they did a very good job >> and all the staff that was here at graduation. >> Yes. >> And I sent them an email and thank them all for appreciated that they were there. I mean, like I said, the the graduation uh uh that's my first graduation that really graduated seven kids, but it was very nice. Very nice. Hopefully, we can build on those numbers and graduate a few more next year. So, >> so I don't have question or questions

per se, but I do have concerns that have been brought up to me. So, I just wanted them to be put on record. Okay. Well, apparently our school from elementary to high school, we have a bullying problem here. And I don't think they're getting addressed. And to me, it's very important because you hear all these stories of these kids that get bullied to a point where, you know, it's not a very good thing. >> There's a few uh issues that have brought to me. Um we're try we're meeting with the kids. Uh right now, uh we're good this summer. That's one of our uh priorities is to really work on our our handbook to be able to address those with a little bit more of um stiffer consequences. Right now the board the policies there's

not a whole lot there. We're bringing in the kids. We're talking to them. We're having uh in fact this next week we have a mediation with a couple of students. So we're trying to address those issues. >> Okay. Okay. I just wanted to make sure that they're getting addressed and they're not just put it on hold >> under the rug. They're not. We're take we take care of those all those uh concerns very seriously and we are trying to address them. >> Yeah. Cuz like I said it's I know what's happening in elementary and the last one that I was known was I mean the student got physically hurt and it was recorded by another student. So I mean >> we have to do something. >> We're we're we're addressing those. We're trying to put

some a plan together with a with a counselor and the social workers and just trying to we we will address those. We are addressing. >> Thank you. >> Anything else? >> Thank you. >> Question. Do we not have didn't we have a policy um >> the bullying because I think when I started it was presented a bullying policy. >> That policy was presented to um by Mr. uh but I don't know if it was ever approved or not. >> I believe it was >> because I I have not seen it but if it hasn't it will >> it should have been approved because if it was on the action item it should have been >> then we'll have to take a look at that. I remember when that wasn't uh presented to you. >> Yeah.

So we should um make sure we >> Oh yeah. No, that's it. Like I said, we take those pretty serious. >> I interrupt for just a moment. So, we we did have a meeting this morning where we were discussing this issue administratively and with our counselor and others in attendance about enforcing the bull anti-bullying policy. uh as well as part of that staff in service at the beginning of the years uh will address how to be proactive on this issue because it is a concern throughout the district. >> Maybe one of the things that we'll be looking at is even providing some kind of a professional development training for teachers to be able to identify those uh those issues. Well, >> so who who are the social workers that work here? We got Monica Garcia's

one of them and then of course Mr. uh Mic is a counselor. >> I just want to add that my concern is also when the parents or grandparents get involved because that seems to exacerbate the issue and make it worse to the point that kids don't want to report it. Um and it's not just in school, it's on buses and um >> I know you're working on it, but it's definitely something that needs to be to be addressed. We'll uh we're working and we'll continue to work on that. >> So the cameras are installed on the buses, right? >> Yes. >> So then they should be record of whatever goes on. >> Buses. >> Yeah. Yeah. They should be able to uh would be the one to uh to view those cameras to see if

there's any issues or they report any issues of the bus. He's the one to contact. >> Yeah. >> Do we have cameras on activity buses? Because if not, I think that's a another place we need cameras on. >> We can certainly install. >> Okay. >> And we did talk today about a little bit about maybe taking a look at maybe installing more cameras throughout the the halls in the school as well. We uh asked Sean to kind of take a look and check see what uh what kind of funding we're we'll be looking at to install some cameras in the halls uh just to kind of keep a little more eye be able to go back to see exactly how things started. So a lot of times you by the time you get those recordings

it's the issue has already started. So sometimes you don't get to see the beginning of it. >> I think we need to develop a way also that our students are going to feel um safe or want to report it because if if we have something in place that the students aren't going to even want to, you know, like Sandy said, um they won't even want to report it because it it just gets blown out of proportion. But we need to set something in place that the kids will feel safe and secure in reporting if there's bullying. >> We can see if we could set up something where they where it will be anomalous where they want to know who reported. >> There are systems that are approved by the state at peed that are available

for anonymous reporting. So we can look into that bringing it to our district. >> Oh, I'm going to change the subject. So go ahead. No, no. >> She wants to think. Go ahead. >> Yeah, I I know. We >> I thought we had already >> Yeah, we I I know. Uh I think it was last year. >> What were the comments statements? State your state your name for the record. >> My name is Carmen Branch and our son Rafael. He was one of the students that was attacked last year last week. Uh we had to take him to the emergency room for stitches under the eye. When I asked for surveillance videos or whatever security conveniently it was in a place that it wasn't available, but students at McCertie and Paka High School had videos

of what happened. >> So it was recorded by the students. >> And it's it's all over. >> I wasn't aware of this. So, I think I think that goes to our cell phone policy and I think we need to get a more strict cell phone policy for those reasons because uh videos like that going out into the public. It's not okay. Um, and I think we need to look into video cameras in our hallways to get a bigger picture of what's going on in our school. >> But it doesn't help anything if the student reports it to the principal or to a teacher and nothing is done. Well, and I think, excuse me, um I think if a if uh a video is out there, um staff administration, they should have been able to see

that video. If that video is floating around, then we should have had proof. >> So, I was told that he hadn't seen. >> So, was there any >> We're treading on ground right here. I'm going to advise the board. We cannot discuss um personally identifiable information of students dis at this point in public. >> So that's that's what I was going to advise. >> Thanks. >> That's what I was going to advise Miss Branch. Um if you can get with our superintendent, schedule a meeting with him and discuss it with him. Um and then we can go from there. If if it doesn't get resolved, then uh you can request to meet with the board and and we'll go forward from there. But I agree 100%. If the kids are safe at school, we need

to figure this out quick. >> And it's something that needs to be addressed when it happens, not after the fact, too. >> Well, that's part of the issue that we're trying to be proactive on this. And Mr. Hawkins, in all fairness, is trying to get to know the students still and being fairly new to this campus. But, uh, that doesn't excuse students, uh, misbehaving the way that we're talking about. But, uh, I welcome you to my office and I of text messages sent from I don't know what you call it from Google or whatever from students threatening sexual assault on another student. >> Well, you and I can set up a meeting and I'd be happy to meet with you all. Okay. >> Oh, that was my next question. I don't want to change gears.

So, I know that the cell phone policy is supposed to go into effect. Do we have a plan in place of what we're going to do, how we're going to handle these? >> We we have discussed it and we're going to over the summer, we'll put something together >> because at the conference that we attended, I mean, there was a bunch of tables that have I mean, vendors like crazy, but I mean, different options that they had. So, I was just wondering what what our plan is. >> We're we've got like So, we kind of talked about it and and pulled up put something together over the summer >> because I know in uh some other states for the national uh board uh conference we had. They're doing away with cell phones for students and

and for teachers unless it's used for educational purposes. >> There's a there's several and I've talked to different uh administrators. Some have like a box in the front office where they turn them in every day or the teachers might have something in their classrooms where they walk in and they put them away. So there's several ways that we can handle that but uh most definitely we need to address that. >> Um I know you think >> so. I agree. Go ahead. Sorry. >> I know you say that you guys are going to work on it. When can we have uh when can we know what plan you guys have? >> When when do you think we can get started on working on those uh cell phone? >> That would be part of our handbook planning.

We had an administrative meeting this morning where we're bringing up several issues such as this. The summer is early summer. We're working on the cell phone plan. We need to revise our student handbook. I've noticed several things in there that are uh outdated to say the least that we need to address and being proactive with the new principal on board as well. >> And some committee members in fact >> last week even having a couple of student representatives in that meeting those meetings. So, as far as a cell phone policy, as far as a cell phone policy and really any policy in the past, what we've had is of course we have policies, but they're not enforced. So, if we're going to make policies and stricter policies on cell phones, on bullying, we need to

enforce those policies to ensure that our students are safe. If we're not ensuring those policies, then why have them? So we if we're going to if we're going to make our our policies stronger or more strict, let's make sure we enforce them and hold not just our kids but teachers just the same accountable. >> And for the sake of the public and the staff that are here, uh this is part of what you as a board discuss with me bringing me on board and it starts at the superintendent's office, no matter who that is. and uh making sure that it's enforced, all policies are enforced uh at the administrative level at the buildings and then on down to the staff and so on and students. So, you need to hold me accountable holding the rest

of the staff accountable. >> So, is there a way maybe we could set up a some kind of board retreat or what with a to go over some of these policies that are outdated or whatever and try to refresh them or bring them up to date? Yeah, we have several policies uh that are like I said outdated that we need to bring up to speed and then enforce them as you said and you've had some turnover that we're hoping to resolve going forward. >> Then last year we had like mid year that's when they decided we're going to have clear backpacks with no knowledge to the parents. So, are we going to do clear backpacks next year or we >> That's a new one on me, but there's other I mean, we have to be

practical, right? And uh the reporting system is a good system in some schools, other school districts have had over reporting or false reports made. You've got to protect against that when there's when they're anonymous, those sorts of things. But this boils down to uh being proactive with the security in the school and the consequences when bullying happens or fights happen. or breaking of rules in general. Uh the consequences need to be firm and swept and uh we need to be serious about that but interventions as well. So uh I think there's some good programs. There's we don't want to just keep adding program after program, but we need to be uh aware and the training of our staff and then on into the classroom of u preventative measure measures as well as uh um after

the fact measures. So I'm I'm losing my words right now. So, >> uh, my my name is Ferisa Lassar and, uh, here's a suggestion, uh, maybe put into your, uh, financial plan for the following years to come. uh hiring a security guard to, you know, or a couple of security guards to control the hallways during uh the exchange of classrooms and stuff like that. That way there's no um about that get you in trouble. Anyway, um so uh you know that way there's no Can you keep a straight face? >> Change the whole vibe, right? >> So, back to the topic. Security guards uh would be implemented not only in the hallways, also it'll help with uh situations where the teachers, let's say, get ill or something and there's a few of them that are

out that day. um you know maybe help patrolling the hallways in that instance as well to where you guys have extra staff even if it is a security guard. I don't know if that makes sense. I hope it does and I hope that uh reaches out to through uh the budget as well. >> Was it with the putting video cameras and that in the hallways and then >> I'm sure some of the staff monitors the hallway in between classes, right? >> Part of staff development and I don't want to spend a whole lot of time on this now, but certainly that is an option. It is a very costly option I might add, especially when you're already already budget strapped. But uh another thing is enforcing having staff standing in the hallways during passing periods

being observant and also accountable to report and deal with these issues uh as they arise and being proactive. If you see any just even joking around that's uh not appropriate could lead to bullying and uh will it ever be foolproof? Not completely. But there's certainly things we can do to address it and that's one thing that we can consider especially with the sheriff's department. local law enforcement is often involved or if they have staff will uh at times down south I had border patrol that volunteered and they came into our schools and so on and uh it wasn't all the negatives you hear about in the news. It was actually very effective but we weren't in a position to pay employees. So, we worked with our local law enforcement as well the sheriff's office and

border patrol and I don't know if Rio Reuba County Sheriff has those resources or not, but uh certainly we can reach out to them. >> Okay. >> So, we we had something similar um that came up earlier in the year and Mr. Limblad was the principal. We we addressed it with them where we said teachers can be placed in the hallways and outside for duty times. Understand that the teachers have their times their lunch and their and their uh the period that they they have to do their paperwork or whatever. I can't remember what it's called at this time. But other than that, teachers could be placed to do duty in between classes um before school, after school, lunchtime. Why aren't these teachers pulling duty? Why aren't they giving assigned areas and why aren't they

pulling duty to make sure that again our students are safe? >> So the the staff they they're there they are staffing doing morning duty. Uh they do their staff on lunch duty and the staff are required and to they do go out in the halls during passing periods. So that that is being done. Mr. Thank you. >> Moving on to literacy school health update. Miss Vil, most of the report is in your packet on the school health update. So unless you have any questions, recommend you drop down to it with Mr. percentages. >> Okay. Uh moving on to letter D, information technology, Mr. Sean. >> Good afternoon, members of the board. Uh so I wanted to update you guys on the windstream uh progress out at Lib Brook. So we have uh had them in

the school and they have installed the fiber optic there. The issue I'm running into with them is I'm trying to contact them to figure out our pricing and where what we need to do to move forward. I've yet to hear back from them. I've left multiple messages that sent multiple emails to the uh guy who is supposed to be our representative. He has not gotten back to me in the past couple weeks and I haven't heard anything back from him on that end. Uh so I'm going to keep trying to reach out and see what I could do. Uh I know that some of the staff talked to the people installing uh for the windstream out there and they said that it was not the service wasn't through Windstream, it was through PNM. So I'm

going to start reaching out to PNM and see what uh if we have to go through them or what the process is on that end as well. Uh the second part of my technology update is the speakers in the gym. uh during graduation whenever we were setting up and getting things ready, we noticed that uh was uh two of the speakers had are blown in there. Uh two of the ones that we have up in the ceiling for music and announcements during the games uh they have been blown uh due to people playing music and they're too loud and so on. Uh so we are looking at pricing on getting them repaired or replaced just to see what it would cost us to get them fixed. So we have working uh sound system here in

the gym. >> So is there any way you can set the volume where they can't go any higher? >> Yes, we're uh we had a lock on it on the system and at some point uh well there was a lock on the system before I was here and at some point whenever uh before I came they I guess have broken the lock on it. So, we are getting going to get it uh relocked up and get it so that no one else has access to it and set it to a certain level because uh I guess from what my understanding is there's some people from the community that go in to that uh where the audio is and change it, which they shouldn't be in there. They shouldn't have access to that room at all.

>> That was going to be my question. Who has access to that? >> Um I believe the janitors are the only ones with the keys. So now we have the door locked but is also in the changing area for the referees. So during games you have to have it unlocked. >> But only the referees can are supposed to go in there, right? >> Yes. Only the referees are supposed to go in there. >> And I don't think they'd mess with it. >> No, that they >> So what about coaches? Do they have access to that room? >> Uh as far as I know, they do not. I don't have a key for it either. Um, I believe the janitors are the currently the only ones other than uh VA who has the all the spare

keys that have access to. >> So I know for practices uh coaches have gone in there and play music or or whatever not. >> So I know I don't know if the locks are already broken or if the coaches actually do have keys. >> Can we code? Can we instead of putting a key lock, can you code it and give every individual a different code? That way, whoever goes in has to enter their code and if the speakers get blown, you can see who the last person was in there and they could be held accountable for >> Yeah. I >> for any damage. I will reach out to Elite and see how much it would cost for us to get the uh the the code door locks on there just to and we might even

be able to use our access keys. So we could give access to only certain people with the key itself um that way as well. Uh that way we just keep one system with our the key cards that we currently have and we could just do it that way as well. But I will reach out to you uh tomorrow and start the process of figuring that out as well. >> I stand for any other questions. >> Any other questions? >> None for me. >> Thank you. Okay, moving on. Larry, maintenance update. Mr. for Jeremy. >> Good evening everyone. >> Good evening. >> Can you hear me? >> Yes. >> Okay. So, tonight for my uh maintenance report, we have uh the gyena showers. They are working on both sides minus a few more valves in the

girls restroom that we have to get because they're leaking. Um, but we did uh so now the hot water heater in the gym uh took some type of uh electrical surge is what TLC is telling me and the transformer fried. So we now have no hot water for the gym showers or anywhere in the gym leopard's den. Um so they're in the process of getting me quotes to see what that uh damage is going to be. And when I have that, I will let you guys know. Um, moving on to the housing and improvement. Uh, we have some quotes for the housing improvement for the Teacher Ridge. Uh, we're going to we just need to pick and see what we're going to who we're going to use there. Uh, we also got a few quotes

for some trailers so far. Uh, but we're still working on that. Uh, let's see. We also have at Li Brook campus uh the firewatch situation. We are off of firewatch. We finally got everything we need to be online for the alarm fire alarm system to communicate with the authorities and everybody that needs to be alerted. Uh that's really all I have for my board report tonight. I stand for any questions. >> Lucy, so um of the showers, how many showers do we have? How many are working? Okay, so we have 12 showers in the boys' bathrooms, locker rooms upstairs, downstairs, six upstairs, six downstairs, and the same in the girls. All the boys showers work right now. Uh the girls showers, most of them work minus three. We ran out of shower valves uh there

cuz there was six missing off the bat. There was no valves and then we replaced another two, but there's still a few that don't work. >> Okay. So, thank you. >> Yes. Any other questions? >> Thanks to Jeremy and his crew for sprucing up the campus for graduation. It looked great. Um he gets and weeds. I watched them out. They're pulling weeds. I did not offer to go help, but they did a good job getting ready for graduation. Thank you. Thank you. >> Moving on to letter F. Finance committee is Southerntherland. >> Yes. Uh the finance committee met yesterday, I think it was. Seems like a long week. Um yesterday Sandy and Lucy were there and we had a a good meeting. It was a good discussion. They asked good questions and um we didn't

went over all the different reports. Um and I would let Sandy or Lucy um jump in and um make a recommendation for approval of the budget items or the finance committee item. I have a question on one of the on the what is it the number check number two 23436 for 11,82240 is it uh it's for what professional service what what's that >> which which check number I'm sorry I didn't hear you >> 2000 uh 23,436 >> yes it can be professional services or it could be another invoice. They invoice uh it's CES and they and they invoice um several things at once on a on an invoice but that is professional services is included in that. Yes. >> Okay. So, I'll add that we did meet and I would recommend moving forward with approval.

>> Okay. So, we'll take that up. It's not. >> Okay. >> Hey, Randy, real quick. >> Real quick, since we're under the the financial committee stuff, I know it's not >> on the agenda, but just so the board knows, uh, Mr. Kushman and I uh had a discussion in reference to Linda Paul and Mr. Sullivan um about the contract we had we had made with him for 13,000 for uh look helping us look for a superintendent. Uh they didn't come down as they said they would. They didn't come to our district like they said they would. So after uh we made our choice for superintendent. After we hired superintendent, I emailed um Mr. Sullivan and Miss Linda Paul and uh voiced concern. Um they they took it. They emailed us back. They came back with

a with uh with a different price, I guess you could say. And they actually took $2,000 off of it to make it $11,000. Um so the district actually only paid $11,000 uh for their services, just so you guys are aware. Okay, thank you, Robert. Moving on. Letter G, superintendent's report. >> Approval on the finance committee report. I think not yet. It's in the >> or later. Okay. >> Yeah. >> Uh you've already heard much of what we uh what I would have reported out on. Uh we are advertising for teachers and bus drivers, actively advertising. We have uh at least I think Mr. Hakus alluded to two people for bus drivers, but I counted four later this afternoon with uh Patricia uh people that are interested in and good chance of getting some new drivers

on board so we won't have to uh rent services from the neighboring school districts hopefully going forward. Um, teacher applications are coming in for the positions we anticipate are open or know that are open already and we hope well we are going to start interviewing uh week after next for those positions for next school year. The let's see I don't have anything new at Liebrook school at this point. Well, other than uh we did hire a principal. We will formally introduce her at a later date. Um but uh she'll be coming on board. It was a unanimous recommendation by the interview committee who was involved there. Uh I have anou that I need to have a board signature. I guess uh before I forget, let's pass that down instead of the president. You're the acting

president tonight or running the meeting. So if you can sign thatou, I'd appreciate it. Um, we already mentioned we're trying to get an act or a route established from the library school uh to our main campus uh in the mornings and afternoons. We've had two three parents reach out to us that I think it was six or seven students who uh parents want their kids to come to the Guyana campus for high school. So, that's good news for us. And if we run that bus, then we would uh we would still keep middle school at the other campus. But of course, New Mexico is open enrollment. So, if a parent chose to send a seventh or eighth grader uh over on that bus, they would have that option as well. So, uh that would be

up to parents and and us to work out. So, uh one of those parents did request that all four or five of her kids, how many was it? Five, I think we counted up, uh would be attending the main campus that are from the Live Brook area. So, uh, we're working on that actively. Uh, Jeremy's already mentioned grounds and maintenance. I am working with public school facilities authority. There's more information to come. We have not heard about a match on the mobile homes that we intend to order. where we are still getting prices uh getting uh some good competition going through three different vendors right now on mobile homes for the teaches and we still hope to add at least two out at Liebrook and two here on the campus and uh the quotes that

Jeremy got uh on remodeling the house one of them is pretty high but it's one that broken down where we could pick and choose the items for remodel of the house that I'm camped out in right now legislative updates. We've already covered the calendar issue. Uh the uh day week, school week is set to go to the uh next level. The appellet courts, I think I shared with you before stand rounds said we actually got a refund from the previous round. We're talking statewide on that lawsuit. So right now he is not assessing the school districts to help with that next round. So that was good news. Uh that's all I have specifically under my Well, I should mention that we did have a student who was lifellighted out. Uh I I sent you all

an update on that. The same student had another medical incident a few days later and they had called the helicopter and then canceled the helicopter and she's improving but undergoing some tests and of course I won't share the name but uh that's on an issue of concern but we had EMS and we had a flock of people show up very quickly to address the medical situation and staff responded to the emergency alert that went out very quickly. We do need to address the looks that come out and uh keep people back and away from emergency personnel, but that's a normal thing. And just a reminder to staff and the public. And then I guess under my report, we can mention don't forget the school law conference is coming up and Patricia is going to keep

trying to get you in at uh rooms at the hotel where the conference is, but right now we're scheduled where we have rooms down the street. So that's all we got. >> So just to add on to yours, um I sit on the Northern New Mexico College Board for the um dual credit stuff that they have here. So we met on April 23rd and they were very excited when they all found out that I was from Coronado. So they were very impressed with Crystal uh to a point where they said our district is so involved and so great that they are um I guess we're eligible to be I didn't understand what kind of site. So I don't know if you want to elaborate >> address that that's part that's an upcoming that we were

going to bring to you in June but since she's here and you're mentioning it we'll have her break the news to you now with the microphone. It was very exciting to me. So I was like, I got to share this. >> Yes. So um through our collaboration and our partnership with Northern New Mexico College, our students, majority of our students are earning 50% of their credits toward a degree program offered through Northern. And because of the success of our students, we qualify. Actually, we're not even under the qualification status. We're being appointed as an additional campus. So, we will um and that's anou that will be provided during the June meeting. Um we have to have that submitted to Northern prior to the June 30th uh deadline that they've set for us. Um it does

not entail additional costs to the district. What it does is it allows us to continue our collaboration with Northern and it also provides opportunities for adult courses particularly within the mixed traits program. So um it's exciting news. Uh our students are doing really well. They're earning credits in welding, plumbing, pipe fitting. Uh those instructors are coming to us on Mondays and Wednesdays. Northern has added construction and solar classes as well. So, we're excited uh to grow um the opportunities for our students here. So, thank you. >> And in June, the president Baldera's asked to come speak at our meeting in June. Um so, I had talked to Crystal about maybe we as board members come in a little bit early to tour like where all the stuff's happening. I went one day into Crystal's classes.

She was like, "Come look at this." and I was just blown away by all the things our kids are doing. So, um he will be here in person at our jun. >> This is it's a big deal. David Javis at Cooperative Education Services uh is course in charge of the CTE programs and you were out of state and I wasn't going to say anything tonight, but um he said we have the best in the state on CTE and our teacher here. So, um that was coming from Mr. Travis. Um, it's kind of full circle for me. I didn't know what I was doing at the time, but when I was serving at dual city schools, I was told that I was serving on that original curriculum and um, requirements program when Northern became a college

and teaching school. And so, it's kind of neat to be back here in full circle seeing what's happened over the last 20 plus years. >> And just to piggy back off of that, I don't know how many you guys are aware, but Mccertie came down They had heard about the programs that Crystal has as well and they toured uh Crystal's classrooms and the stuff that she's doing with the students and I got some feedback from the teachers and they were very impressed with what Crystal has going on. >> Thank you. And then um I'd also like to add um during June uh at Northern New Mexico College um CES is helping the rural CT alliance establish a think tank session where we're inviting stakeholders from all districts and uh this is to participate in table

talks so that we can as an entire network provide more opportunities for all students, not necessarily just here at Hemis Mountain, but throughout the state of New Mexico. And so, um, we'd like to invite a board member to be part of that, uh, table talk on June 12th. And, um, you know, I can provide more details on that. >> Good. Thank you. >> Thank you. Just have a question for you Mr. Kushman from Li Brook. So if the if those kids come over here and say they want to participate in sports, it'd be high school for practice. How would they get be getting back? >> That would be probably at this point a parental transportation issue or car pooling. And um we might be able to uh get a coach in a suburban to transport

him after practice or work it out with the schedules. But um there's some other options that I don't really want to discuss right now. We'll have to discuss at a work session with the board to see if uh you all would be on board with adding basically having to do with some practice during like seventh period of the school day and that kind of. So, >> okay, >> which would also include counting toward an elective for their high school credits. >> Thank you. >> So, moving on to audit committee update. >> Um, >> go ahead. >> Um, we have not had an audit committee meeting. Um, we plan to have one um in the near future because we will be starting the um FY25 audit um and soon as we can get on the schedule

and um get the contract which is before you tonight for um action. Okay, >> moving on to our policy updates and discussions. >> Nothing new updates other than what we've already discussed. >> Have a question. So, I I wasn't able to attend graduation, but I did see that our graduates were in white gowns, and I'm not sure when our school colors turned to white, but as far as I know, we were always black and gold. Just a question. >> Yeah. Hi. >> And we I know we it's been brought up before in the past, so I'm just curious where or who dictates what colors they wear. All I can tell you is I was at our our son-in-law's graduation from college in Chicago and he was wearing a black robe with gold cords. So, okay.

>> My understanding is that the kids are the ones that chose the colors. So, I don't know, maybe that's something we can discuss for next uh graduation. >> I know like well when I graduated um we had to wear our school colors. I mean, we could have our our class colors like in other ways, our flowers or decorations, but our class our school colors, which were black and gold, where we wore black gowns and I don't know what was gold on us. >> I I know it used to sometimes it'd be like the girls would wear gold and the boys black or >> vice versa. I mean, I was a little surprised with black, but I guess that's how they did it. I I don't I don't have an answer for you. Well, I think

if we're going to give him a choice, we can give him a choice either black or gold. >> Just kidding. >> And then another school asked me about um about our graduation policy and I was like, I'm not sure. We haven't looked at it in a while. >> I don't know. >> Because they asked me about about decorating their their caps and stuff and I said, >> "Yeah, you can't." >> Oh, yeah. At that school, they can't. And I'm like, >> "These are perfect examples of things we need to address in the student handbook." And uh do you remember Mr. Hawkins what I told you Henry Ford said you could have any color car you wanted as long as it was >> black. >> I think it's a good idea to go over like Antonet

said the board policy as well. So if we could get a first reading and make any adjustments that we need to that way next year we're scored away as well. Well, there was a a modification to the graduation for the they could wear like be >> native native regalia uh under state statute now is allowed no matter what the school policy is. Yeah. So, >> okay, moving on to discussion and action items. Number one, the Leopard Leopard's Dam boiler hot water heater. Jeremy, you Jeremy, are you still on there with the price? >> Did he say that he was waiting for them to get back with him on the price? >> Well, he was trying to get a circuit board, so I would say let's pass on that one. Um, we also I think it

was Patricia brought up Orveda that there might be a warranty on that. So, we're trying to find out more information. So, let's go ahead and table that item. >> Okay. Uh, do you have a motion to table? >> A motion. >> That. >> Okay. A motion by Miss Antinet, second by Robert. All in favor? >> I. >> Motion carries. Moving on to number two, housing and improvements. >> Okay. and I asked him to put uh this agenda because we had a quote for a complete remodel of the the house that I'm in. It came out to a total of I believe it was $35,000 and because of the amount I thought we needed to bring it to you for approval even though you approved a set a set amount of money and then allow us

to u pick and choose items that would be necessary in that house. Even at that price, it's uh probably worth Mr. I house together >> the funding. So >> So is it going to be put out? >> It was he got three quotes is what he did. So >> set up >> uh at that amount that's pricey. >> Oh, okay. >> So I would ask the board to $35,000 and allow us to um pick and choose the items. Okay. So, do I have a motion? >> I move. >> Motion by Miss Antinet. >> Second by Miss Sandy. All in favor? >> I. >> Motion carries. >> Item three, future housing units rental increase. Our prices, our rent prices are quite low, but I would like to table this until I have further information. And I

I am going to bring a request to you to raise the rent prices and the deposit of notice that units I've been in uh have been trashed frankly by past uh residents tenants. >> And I think if we we need to significantly increase the deposit amount and then I would like to round all of the u rents up at least for new tenants as they come in. Maybe we consider grandfathering, but I'll have more detail at the next meeting. We don't have that. >> So, is that another We had discussed that because of the fact that they were trashing them about um revamping the contract and about when they're checking out that somebody be with them before they leave. >> Um that needs to happen. And also expect this goes way back. I've been four

districts that had two bridges and have had to implement a program representative administrator along with maintenance inspect the housing once or twice a year just like you would if you just for example the house I'm in right now it's happened over the years the carpet's trashed every single door house has doors. Mic switches are literally broken. Lines don't work. Um they've been really poorly taken care of. Part of that would be the inspection and also the deposit. So >> okay, sorry about that. So anyway, we'll bring you more detail later. We are needing to increase the rates and we'll maybe we add that to our work session. Okay. Thank you. >> I move to table number three. >> Okay. There's a motion to table. Is there a second? >> I'll second. >> Second by Miss

Lucy. All in favor? >> I. >> Mr. President, Vice President, I would like uh Dice to address number four, the general obligation bond. Yes. Tonight you have before you a um an agreement a contract with um RBC Capital Municipal U group um in order to I've worked with them in the past for many many years and I know Mr. Kushman has worked with them. Um they're very professional firm. they do a go above and beyond to educate the board, help educate the community um regarding the options we have as far as uh bonding capacity and bond election. Um I know we talked to Mr. Valdez um that presented and he was um under the impression he advised that we might have had to have done something in April um and May in order to get

on the agenda or to get on the election in November. However, after we've talked to RBC, they said that we did have time and they will begin working with us as soon as we can get the agreement. Actually, um when you sign up with the municipal advisor, um the cost comes if the general election bond passes and they're paid um at that time out of those u proceeds. So, there's no cost to the district upfront um for any of their services. and I definitely vouch for their uh ability to really work with the boards and would be great to help us um if we pursue this general obligation bond. They've asked to be on the June meeting agenda to present all the financial data, the bonding capacity, the rates, how it'll affect um the property

owners um so that you have all the information you need to make um a decision a decision on actually approving a resolution to call for an election. So I'm recommending um approval of um the advisory agreement and disclosures with RBC capital >> and this we're one to do what >> you all do my first meeting with you had Leo come and present and it was about it could be for housing it uh several of the funding opportunities we have require us to go out and prove that we have bonded for the match And uh it's kind of like the mill levy. There's different requirements and items that can be used for remodel um our schools. I'm looking into the possibility of money that uh costs us nothing but directly but from the state to level

some of our old buildings because the maintenance costs are more than what the buildings are worth or the possibility of someday reopening them. It can go toward housing. I I don't know what items you had discussed prior to my tenure here >> because I thought we talked about building a new school because since now we have the elementary incorporated with the high school of building a new school that better fits that. I thought that's what we had discussed. >> Yes, PSFA has recommended the campus here is in the top 10 all the buildings which means they're recommending a new school building. But we have to show that we've gone out and done our part on the bonding. And even if we don't have the capacity to meet the full match, once you've done the max

on your bonding capacity, then there's monies available to come back and make up the difference for our share of the PSA. >> I I mean, I know that it's kind of hard to sell the community because that school was built in 2000. >> Yeah. And I know other places, districts, their buildings are a lot older and I think it it's it's going to be a hard sale. I I mean that's the way I think. I might be wrong, but >> I would recommend doing the contract with RBC and listening to the presentation in June on the financials. You don't have to approve the bond, but at that point, you could make a decision and certainly we can get input on the pros and cons. And we'll try to get a PSFA representative here at the

same time if we can. they have had high turnover at public school facilities. So, it's very difficult to reach them, but um I'm not sure what all issues you have discussed prior to my tenure here. So, so the uh library school is considered one of the top schools in the state of New Mexico designwise and style. Um, again, my experience shows that the oldest of buildings are the better quality of buildings, but when you're in that top ranking, they will not do a match to remodel in most cases. If you're in the top, I forget what it is now, 40 or 50, it's very difficult to get remodel money. Um, they want you to level and start over because it's more cost effective. >> Yeah. And I think it'd be good for housing. It can

be all of the above in a general >> we definitely need >> those houses. >> We need different housing. >> Yeah, >> it definitely can approve help that. And also as Mr. Kushman addressed um in order to qualify for any additional funding from this any additional funding through PSFA um they do require a match and you can use this general obligation bond to for that match. So, it's a good um parlay onto using that money in order to really gain some additional funding to do. It can be maintenance, it can be remodel, it can be equipment, it can be um tractors, it can be vehicles, it can be anything that you put on a general obligation bond. Um question. Um we'll it's pretty broad that you can be able to use it. even if we

don't use it to totally level the building. Um it it can be used for all the kind of things that we're having issues with that's costing us so much this year as far as repairs and and um equipment replacement. >> There's there's such as the track inside track where tiles are lifting up, things like that where you're replacing the floor. It it is a sell to the community and I'm not real thrilled with bond elections in general, but I am about local control. I think you figured out and this is investing in your community and it's our job to sell the community on the value of the investment for long term for the our kids and our families. Districts such as TRC many years ago had bonds fail and then when they went out and

did their football stadium with a track that was open to the public for exercise and walking the track, an allseason track, that's what sold their bond years ago. And since then they showed a commitment to the community as a whole, not just school age children. But >> well, see that's what we were trying to do out here, but it never got done. >> We wanted our own track, >> right? But th those are just examples. And then RBC, uh, again, I've worked with each of these bond companies over the years, but RBC is the most professional of the current companies working with school districts, and they do a great job of helping you prep your community and giving you advice on open houses and things and showing the community the importance. It's not a guarantee

it'll pass. >> Yeah. >> But it's worth a chance. >> And so, I recommend that you approve going into contract with them and allowing them to come and present in June. That's my recommendation. >> Okay. I have a motion. >> I move. >> I second. >> Motion by Minette. Second by Sandy. All in favor? >> I. >> Motion carries. Moving on to number five year 2425 audit contract manning account services. >> So I have a question before you start during it for bids. So, usually we get bids before we select a new contractor. So, I'm not sure why we only have one. This is a continuation of the contract. You can do the contract extension up to three years uh without rebidding since it's um under the $60,000 limit. It's 32 I think it's $32,000

um contract. Um, so we didn't, personally, I didn't feel that it was a good idea to change auditors with the situation that we've had of the findings and trying to continue to clean it up. So, um, I'm just recommending and brought to you just an extension of that contract. The state auditor um has approved us using Mannings if it um is approved by the board. >> I just I I'm with Anton. I I'd like to see it open up for bid. >> Okay. Um the time >> I mean I'm I'm I'm hoping he's going to >> well, you know, apply for it or bid on it, many, but it's always the risk you're taking is uh you don't know what bids you'll get. And then right now there is still a shortage of qualified auditors

and with all the findings, Manning has a good reputation. You don't have to renew it for three years. You could do one more year. uh they they know the district, you're taking a a big chance of getting a much higher bid coming in um if it's opened up, including from Manning, he could turn around and and increase it. So, that is a ch a risk you're taking. And I just want to add, considering all the findings we've had and um them not being fixed the last couple years, I kind of agree that it might look a little suspicious if we suddenly change auditors considering all that and just I mean um I'll go with majority, but I I just think it's it might be better just to stick with Manning one more year. >> No,

I'm not against Manning. I'm just saying in the past we've just every time the contract is up we just get >> bids. >> So I just was wondering why this year was different. >> So the bid is typically for three years or or I think it's three years typically and then the state is allowing that extension because of the shortage of qualified auditors. Um one of my prior districts we failed to get any bids when we went back out and we got we were almost stuck. we had to um come up with an alternative plan, but then that's another risk you take. So, if he's willing to do it, I uh I hear what you're saying, but I would recommend at least approving it for one more year. >> Okay. So, I have a motion

to approve for one more year. >> I move. >> I motion by by Robert, second by Sandy. All in favor? I I >> motion carries. I would like to hold off on the Well, no, this is the new policy. I do you have a copy of the graduation policy? Okay. >> So, I don't know if you have any questions about that, but this is the one approved by the state of New Mexico and the schoolboard association and uh we just need to approve it to update our policy, the service. So, >> so I have a motion for approval. >> I so move. Motion by Miss Antinet, second >> second by Miss Lucy. All in favor? >> I >> Okay, moving on to number seven, reorganization of the board. This is done pretty much every year

and it it's up to the the board if they want to reorganize or leave it the same. And uh I leave it up to the rest of the board, whatever. >> I would like I would like to reorganize. You >> like to reorganize? Does anybody else Whatever. Reorganize. Do a Bible vote or how do you want? >> Yeah. Well, nominations I think, right? You have to nominate for >> But do you want to take a vote to reorganize or >> Yeah. Well, yeah. >> Well, I was waiting. Uh, Robert, Sandy, >> however you guys want to do it. Don't matter. If so then we can reorganize. >> I Yeah, we can reorganize. I >> what the board wants to do. I support the plan. >> Okay. So, is there a motion to for approval to

reorganize the board? >> I move. >> Motion by Miss Lucy, second by Miss Antier. Hi. >> Hi. >> All right. So, >> so we will open it up for uh nominations for uh president. >> I nominate Randy Cordova for president. >> Okay. There's been one nomination. Is there any other >> I close nomination. >> Okay. So I I have a nomination of uh myself as president. Is there >> what's the word by >> nomination? >> Acclamation. >> That's the word I was looking. There goes the word she's looking for. >> I'm looking for it. >> Okay, we'll open it up for a vice president. >> I nominate Antonet Srano Martinez. >> Have any other nominations? >> I see his nominations. >> Okay. So, seeing that there's no other nominations, uh, Miss Antonet as vice president

for secretary, >> I nominate Lucy. >> I nominate Sandy. >> Come on, Lucy. >> Honestly, I feel like I'm still too new. Um, I'd like to learn the ropes a little bit more. And I think Miss Sandy's doing a great >> There's nobody sitting in Lucy's chair, though. >> There's Sandy tonight. >> My Sandy, you've changed. >> So, is there no other nominations? Uh Sandy as secretary. So, this is the new officers. Randy as president, Miss Antinate as uh vice president, and Miss Sandy as secretary. Okay, >> thank you. Moving on to journal entries. Number five 26, cash transfers. >> We're going to do them all. >> Well, we'll just take them all. >> Yeah, I recommend you approve number 526 through 575. One swoop. >> Okay. have any nom. >> I motion to approve

journal entries number 526 to number 575 for approval. >> I second. >> A motion by Miss Sandy, second by Miss Lucy. All in favor? >> I. >> Motion carries. >> Recommend you approve number 56 through 7070 budget journal entries in one swoop. >> I motion. >> Motion by Miss Lucy. >> Second. Second by Miss Antinet. All in favor? >> I. >> The motion carries. Same for uh this number 0 number 0070 through 0077. The other recommended. >> You have a motion for approval. >> I motion. >> I second. >> All in favor? >> I. Oh, it was a motion by Miss Chandian. >> I second. >> Oh, and second by Miss Ant for the record. So, next item is executive session, Mr. Yes, I guess, Mr. President. Now, I have a recommendation though that uh

on the record that I know your policy over the last few months has been to not allow attendees by Zoom. However, tonight we have uh some personnel and legal discussion and I'm recommending you uh I think it's I don't believe it's a policy. So, it's a procedure to allow our school district attorney and uh our other board members to attend by Zoom in executive session. And we have another link set up should you allow that. >> That's fine. Okay. Okay. >> Loretta, before you log off, can you add President Balderas to the June agenda under presentations before I forget? >> Yes, I've already made a note for it. >> Thank you. >> You're welcome. >> All right. >> Um, executive Oh, sorry. Go ahead. >> So, when we log off, we'll Do you all have

that link? Sandy and Robert, do you have the link? >> No, it'll have to emailed to us. I don't have the link either. >> Sandy will have to read this. >> Okay. Sean will be sending it to you momentarily. >> Sandy, you have to read this. >> Yes. >> Yeah. >> Go ahead. >> All right. Um, executive session notice is hereby given so that Heims Mountain Public Schools Board of Education will meet in executive session pursuant to section 10-15-1H2 of the New Mexico Opening Meetings Act limited personal matters to discuss personal matters um personal identifiable information and potential pending litigation to executive session. How do we vote? Uh, Mr. Robert Vill. >> Yes. >> Mr. Randy Cordova. >> Yes. >> Miss Sandra Hawkins. Yes. Miss Lucy Morphine. >> Yes. >> And Miss Antinet Serrano Martinez.

>> Yes. >> All right. >> So the time is 8:08 and we will be going into executive session.
