008I'll call this meeting to order I only have to do that one more time the vision for our school corporation is posted here on the screens and is in front of us as we do our work here each evening guiding the school corporation our mission is listed as well as is our core beliefs we're excited to start this meeting with very special Human Resources approvals I am going to turn to Dr pleake and Dr Roberts I request approval of the HR administrator recommendations as presented do you want to do you want me in motion first yeah let me um speak up there thank you Dr Fleek for that recommendation we do have two uh of those approvals in front of you from an administrator's standpoint tonight director of secondary education and director or excuse me
009Columbus East athletic director so those two individuals Charles Edwards who is currently our director of title services in the corporation is the director of secondary education that's our recommendation and David Miller who is currently working as a dean and athletic director at Columbus East High School looking to move him into the full-time athletic director position all right if you approve those I'll give you some additional information here in just a little bit all right so I'm going to accept a motion from both but we're going to vote individually if you will so is there a motion to approve both of these positions recommendations our director of secondary education and our Columbus East athletic director it's almost thank you Mr Brian is there a second second thank you Mr hofdwyer so are there questions is there
010more that you'd like to share with us or should we go ahead and approve all right I'll take the vote if I may or a recommendation of our director of secondary education all those in favor please signify by saying aye I as opposed all right Charles you've been approved unanimously says David so we have both of those thank you uh Dr shed and board members for that approval um you know we had to slide just a second ago that references bcsc being the choice to learn work and play with these two individuals are our choice uh to you to serve some very important positions and we thank them for choosing to have for having chosen bcsc some time ago and choosing to move into these again very important positions with us now um Charles Edwards
011is currently our director of Title Services he has a 1990 Bloomington High School South graduate here see does Bachelor of Arts in secondary education with a concentration in language arts from Miami of Ohio he received his master of arts and secondary Administration from Butler University Charles joined us as a corporation chose bcsc back in 2002 as a Dean at Columbus East High School he became the assistant principal at Columbus East in 2005 and served in that role for 15 years for the past year and a half he has served as the Director of title services so his current role he has also been co-chair of our diversity Council since its Inception but Charles if you come up congratulations I'd um I'd like to begin by saying thank you to the board and thank you to
012Dr Roberts and I'd like to say thank you to the countless mentors that I've had along the way I've worked in a leadership capacity in bcsc for a very long time almost 20 years and as Dr Robert said it's because I I chose to be here in it's because I I wanted to be a part of the work that bcse was doing I wanted to be a part of it then I continue to want to be a part of it now it is truly Progressive and this is where I cut my teeth as an administrator um and it's really where I learned the the art and the the soul of of leadership so I've I've always been appreciative of my time here appreciative that I've been able to work alongside and learn from some very
013talented colleagues and mentors Each of which who has been responsible for helping me develop my passion earlier tonight I ran into lots of Administrators from around the district and I could point to each of them and tell you something that I learned from everybody um and so I I I think that I've been lucky in that um really I've been able to humble myself and and learn from those around me and and then use that to offer better opportunities for our students so really again I've been blessed to be around some some great people I'm excited to lead and to serve in a new capacity I'm excited to have new old conversations about teaching and learning but most of all I'm grateful for this opportunity so thank you again to the board and thank you
014again Dr Roberts um I'm excited to get started [Applause] congratulations all right and then our second recommendation that was approved was is David Miller as athletic director at Columbus East High School David is a graduate of Goshen High School he received his bachelor's degree from Ball State University in physical education and then a master's degree in educational leadership from American College of Education after a couple of years of playing in the NFL David played with the Detroit Lions the Chicago Bears the New York Giants over a period of years he joined bcsc in 2006 as a strength and conditioning teacher at Columbus East High School and served in that role until 2014 from 2014 to 2020 he served as a Dean at Columbus East High School and since 2020 he has served in a split
015position as Dean and assistant athletic director at Columbus East High School thank you David for accusing us back in 2006 and thanks for choosing this athletic director's position this evening David Miller thank you Dr Roberts and the school board this is an amazing opportunity I'm truly excited I'd like to thank a few people tonight first and foremost my family my wife Julie son Jackson daughter Maya they've already always supported my career and have put up with my crazy schedule sometimes so thank you for that I've had some great leaders in my life who've made me the person I am today and bcsc has truly provided me with some great leadership and I'd like to thank those couple individuals tonight one is Bob Gaddis Bob gaddest is the reason that we came to Columbus in 2006.
016next is Mark Newell Mark has been my principal almost my entire career at Columbus East and he is truly a great leader that leads by example and then the next and again very special night for for him and myself is Charles Edwards I spent a lot of time with Charles in the Dean's office at Columbus East and because of his creativity splitting the Deans and assisted athletic director job put me in the position I'm in today so I'm truly grateful for those three gentlemen I'm excited I'm excited to take over the role and truly serve the coaches and student athletes at Columbus East High School for many years to come so thank you thank you excited too congratulations foreign [Laughter] [Applause] okay well good evening besides that awesome few minutes there to bring in two
017new leaders into our school corporation at least Elevate them into new positions we have some additional recognitions this evening students in the back we're going to recognize you here in just a little bit I thought for a moment a moment with having these great spellers in the room that before Charles and David were approved we were going to ask them to spell some words but I decided that we wouldn't do that so Charles and David you have to you owe me later that we pulled back on on doing that but we have three board members here to recognize tonight it's been a wonderful evening thus far we talked about at Columbus North High School the last board meeting with all the students that we were recognizing from Columbus North just the the Joyful Noise that
018was in the room that evening it's been very similar here this evening with again recommending these two individuals into their new positions as well as celebrating three outgoing board members and so those who are able to be here for the reception that start at six o'clock thank you for doing that I need to give a credit to like sector cleaning up but our food service department which is the biggest restaurant in Bartholomew County they serve about 8 000 people per day they cater these kind of events and just did an outstanding job so if you had a chance to get some food and drink that is our food service department from bcsc so thanks to them again thanks to all of you for being here and then thanks to the three outgoing board members that
019we have here this evening so these three individuals have a combined a total of 35 years of experience serving this board Dr Jill has been on the board for 16 and a half years Kathy day off Dwyer for 14 and a half years and Doctor builds for four years so 35 years between the three of them and serving this community and the kids of our community and that's what I'd like to thank them the most about is this is a position that is a heck of a lot difficult than maybe what it looks like although with covet maybe it did show how difficult position can be with all of that that came about over the last few years they didn't necessarily sign up for that particular situation but they had to make tough decisions through
020that as they have to make tough decisions all the time and my experience with each of the three ladies that we were recognizing tonight is it's all it's all been about kids they've challenged me with recommendations that I'm bringing forward in terms of how does that recommendation fit the best needs of our kids in our school corporation so as I work on recommendations and if you're not familiar with how a board works the school board reacts to the recommendation the superintendent so I don't want to bring bad recommendations forward because it's not going to work and allow us to move forward so I have to work through a process to make sure that when I make a recommendation I believe that we're going to be able to move forward with that and so as we're
021talking through those we take time to develop those again I appreciate your challenges to me to make sure that the best interests of kids were always in sight and then the next thing is that and related to the best interest of kids I see the heart of an educator in all three of these individuals Kathy during her Reflections talked about special needs and special education in her love and passion for that department in our school corporation which I believe is is an excellent one and maybe one of the best in the state and then Dr biltz has been a classroom teacher and has been involved with preparing kids college students for the workforce and Dr shed has spent much of her career at Indiana University I think IUPUI and then IU Bloomington in the school
022of education preparing our educator leaders for for the state of Indiana and elsewhere so they have that heart they've demonstrated that I just want to thank them for their time here serving the board so I'm just going to call each of you up to get your plaque and if you wish would like to say something you have the microphone to do that if not that is totally up to you and you also have Reflections later and I know sometimes that's when the words all of a sudden start start flowing so Dr bilts if you come forward to me that's very good job [Laughter] next is Dr Jill shed I'm downsized doctor should ask what does it say so that's a good idea doctor said I will read what the plaque says on behalf of the
023students faculty and the community Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation would like to recognize and then name years of devoted service and valuable leadership to the bcsc board of school trustees this particular black goes to Kathy day off Dwyer foreign yeah so it's all about focusing on Learners so I'm excited to ask Mr Payne and Miss Mindy Summers to come up that we can celebrate our state champions from Central Middle School so I'd like to thank you for the opportunity to recognize some of these amazing students at Central Middle School just to give you a little background since Mrs Summers has taken over our spell Bowl team they were state finalists in 2015 16 and 17. 2018 they were state champions 2019 State runner-up 2020 State runner-up and that again in class this year in 2022 were
024again considered the class state champions they changed it up a little bit we are a large school and they divided into classes and we were the large school state champion and so I will let Mrs Summers go from there thank you Mr Perry okay so we're so happy to be in person can we say that so happy to be in person we had over 20 people come out for this billboard team this year just huge so I decided for the first time ever at Central to have two full spellball teams so we had two teams of ten a blue team and an orange team so in-person competition was at Brown County junior high and both teams if we were allowed to take two teams to State we place first overall of all schools of all
025sizes in the state and our other team placed sixth in the state so top ten for both of them but blue team actually took home the state championship for that performance which was awesome and I do want to recognize at the regional competition at Brown County we had seven students with perfect or near perfect scores so as I say your names just take one step forward so we can recognize you for that okay Isla ronit sanjit Ali rajvi shreyan and Crystal so congratulations for that that's a big deal awesome awesome um I first told my teammates that I was having way too much fun with this group and I wasn't sure how competitive we would be but it was going to be one of my most fun years and then we went and took the
026championship so next we were invited to go to Purdue to compete with the top 30 teams in the whole state despite the size of school there we had a solid top five finish we ate good sushi drank boba tea um made some good memories right and we did have six students who had perfect or near perfect at Purdue so those students are Ron it sanjit Ali Ava rajvi and Crystal congratulations for that [Applause] all right and anyone who had a perfect score at either regionals or at Purdue was invited to an individual competition for state so we had students enter that we had six students actually and Ava ronit and Crystal so if you want to step forward Ava and Rana are here they earned silver medals in the state missing only one word of
02750 words in the state so it was awesome and SRI and who's not with us tonight he won the bronze medal missing only two words in the state so Champions then champions again and champions again so these are some awesome kids congratulations thank you congratulations [Laughter] foreign thank you so very much I almost asked what the hardest word is but I won't do that I will I will offer though if you and your families would love to go home we'll give you a moment to do that that we can continue the meeting or you're welcome to stay many takers congratulations again thank you oh sorry all right we'll go ahead with our presentation for this evening at each of our meetings we strive to identify to learn more about best practices and our presentation this
028evening is from Columbus East High School Mr Newell and Ms shambly all right thank you very much Dr Roberts and the board those of you know me though I'm pretty quiet and don't talk a whole lot but tonight talking about Columbus East High School I'm very excited about that I'm a cease is very near and dear to my heart so Lori and I are going to talk about the culture of East and um we think that's a really strong suit of what East has to offer when I look at tonight we have Charles Edwards who was a leader East is now here we have Kristen Beck who is leader East now here we have Bill Jensen who is leader East and brought me into the East culture we have Bridget Van Horn was in the
029counseling department East is now over here and all those individuals that have the DNA of East culture running through them and the beautiful thing is that every school in bcsd has his own culture and all that is flowing through us and we're all together as one bcsd culture okay and it's all different makes it beautiful makes it strong and that makes us able to serve this community stronger through our diversity we've got in our different cultures um so we're going to focus on the East culture tonight and so the first thing I've got again celebrating 50 years in 1972 and how you Define culture and so it's hard to put a word to it or a phrase to it and we believe in student voice and so Brianna Ballard was the yearbook editor in 2009
030I apologize for the length of the quote but I think she really nailed the East culture with this um Leo episcopia once said 11 relationship is one in which the loved one is free to be himself to laugh with me but never at me to cry with me but never because of me to love life to love himself to love being loved this quote symbolizes not only a wonderful relationship between two people but a motto followed by the students and faculty at East at East there were people from all different types of backgrounds none of that mattered when you stepped in the doors at East everyone was treated equally and clicks ceased to exist as an e-student you share a special bond with your classmates that no one else can understand whether it was going
031off campus for lunch together or spending resource library with your friends we always had a good time at East this is powerful you were not judged because the activities you participate in or the clothes you chose to put on that morning at East you could choose your own destiny you were free to be yourself free to be whatever you wanted again this is student voice very powerful notice I bowled it at east you could choose your own destiny we'll come back to that here in a little bit so where does culture start so officially September 11 1972 was the first day of school we just had sophomores and juniors when we started the East so 1974 was the first graduating class you can see the teachers support staff administrators many teachers at North were part
032of this and spent the previous year planning for the new school the first day student meeting was held at the football field due to the fact that where's Dr Bozeman there was no gymnasium no Auditorium no planetarium no science lab no Greenhouse no swimming pool and the music ring wing was not ready for students so basically had just a shell for the students to roll into that first day it was a week late too on top of that so they started a week late all the students are on the third floor those are only rooms that could hold students and Mr Jensen can tell you that that time the third floor was small group rooms with no doors on them so they had homeroom for three days on the third floor the large group downstairs
033was the only classroom available it had two hanging lights from it and folding chairs throughout for that classroom PE was used in the Commons since there's no gym choir was used in the stairwells in a small room off the cafeteria no digital cameras back then so you need a dark room there's no dark room so they use a men's bathroom on the second floor for a dark room um just as you can imagine total tools construction workers were all replaced clutter everywhere and I bet money Dr Bozeman there was no fire watch going on at that time either like we have had in the past on that part if you look at the picture on the left that is going to be from the commons looking towards the cafeteria we now have a library and
034part of the commons so that was wide open to the cafeteria there was no Library there at the time on the right is the resource floor you can see the tables for individual study this is hard to see but these were carols that teachers had individual carols that teachers were there and then this was like office space on that but there are several of those on the resource floor and this is from the from the first year book these adverse conditions created Unity among students and staff enthusiasm ran high makeshift facilities were set up and school began the new modular system coupled with the spirit of cooperation precipitated by the attempts to overcome the problems of new school helped to create a school a different type the closest of the student body and its extreme
035enthusiasm helped the people of East to overcome seemingly instrumental odds and Achieve many things during the maiden year so that was a facility situation we had the flood in 08 we had construction 0-9 16-19 but nothing nothing like this okay so that's what they started with so the second part of the facilities is the program design and they actually started that in 1966. um they had a school board presentation with the new to work with Ohio State as a consultant so they made a presentation there I pulled this from a promotional again this was a vision that they had at that time in 1968 all schools had a potential to prepare students academically they also have facilities to encourage the spirit of individuality responsibility and remove restraints to learning which could slow or stop educational
036growth the development self-direction initiative and deciding one's own destiny cannot be met by curriculum alone the building program and faculty meet this important goal of Education that was 36 years between when that was written and when Brianna Ballard wrote that in the yearbook I thought that was really powerful that they had that vision and that's coming to fruition 36 years later um so this program when you stop to think about it especially if you're trying to schedule this they had 15-minute modules that they that they assigned you had 29 mods for the day some mods were some classes were two mods long so you had 30 minutes for class I talked to Danny Dixon about this he said 30 minutes but they took five minutes out for Passive here so you had 25 minutes for
037class on that part um but they have flexibility with that so some classes were five some classes were 250 on that that led to a six day and then a three day cycle three-day cycle happened quite a bit day one a day two and a day three science like that a lot because you have a day one in the classroom day two you could be in the larger black shirt day three you'd be in the lab and just a very like college-like feel to that piece so this this picture on the far left is a large groups large group room here's what was on the third floor those were the small group rooms that the students were in for three days for home room so you can imagine what that looked like so here is
038what Dr Conroe Ohio State called the air program action learning independent study interaction small group reaction larger group those three things kind of early precursor to udl in multiple means of Engagement you could look at it that way the big emphasis from teacher directed to students taking responsibility students owning their own learning students being architects of their own learning was a big key to this resource and laboratory became very important because that's where a lot of this independent study was taking place each department had its own resource on the second floor if we take a look at the far left that is wooden deck they are on top of the roof of East High School and they're with Mr Danny Dixon he was a student teacher at that time doing their math on the on
039the sun deck together um I know we couldn't get away with that these days but they did have a sun deck on the second floor and the third floor had a sun deck as well in the middle picture this young man was interested in math and science math and computers and so he is designed a computer game on it's a telephone with a modem hooked up and he's doing this during resource time it's on that part our science department chair Aaron Lanai is considering the same concept because there are so many certificates that students can get online now through computer science and worry about that resource time if we could have students working on certificates for different Computer Sciences during their resource so very soon what they're doing back in 72. the last picture I
040disliked because she's very comfortable doing her independent study on the resource floor so what's the impact what has this done for us again coming through those circumstances um a sense of unity a can-do attitude that's what our staff is today they work very hard they work support all the students we have a very great culture you've got to be very flexible to teach at East if you look at how this whole started the whole thing started you have to be very flexible be teaching East with situations that they had developing there we look lots of creative ways to support all of our students Chuck Rhymes an educator writer had a lot of respect for was working as a casa volunteer with one of our families and he noted all the things that our staff were
041doing to support students and he made the comments something along the lines if you can't graduate East you're not going to graduate from anywhere due to the efforts they saw on our staff now are we perfect there's no way I can give you names of students right now who we can't engage and they're not going to get a diploma okay but we're working hard to get all those kids here at East High School and it came from that first group of Educators at East High School another way that our East staff has stepped out of the comfort zone Mr Jensen gave under his leadership we're looking for a different way for students to show what they can know and learn and demonstrate an authentic Manner and so they went out the East Coast into the
042west coast and came back with a senior project model we're now our 24th year of the senior projects that's impacted hundreds of kids on their own career along within the community lots of impact senior projects here our own community demographics obviously have changed with the community and over the years Hispanic Latino group is growing the fastest for us that's a challenge for us our level ones have gone from 15 to over 32 now and so how do we meet the challenge of supporting a student who has minimal English again our staff is reaching enough for that challenge stepping up that challenge to support all the students that walk through our door so again relationships were big back then relationships are big today for East High School another part of the impact with that flexible modular
043program design they gave lots of autonomy to students we do the same thing today to the Eddies we treat them as young adults give them much more trust and freedom than most schools do um students have a choice which resource to attend to get help and that's one way we do it what's come out of this uh culture our academic team has been the most successful okay over the since 2014 state championships Mr Greg Lewis is our lead academic coach and he was also academic coach of the year for the state of Indiana you've got students earn lots of college credits and lots of scholarship money every year we've got students who are on track to graduate who are heading to track graduate and so they'll work their schedule so they've got afternoons off and
044then go work in the community so again all this started back with those group of teachers and when I talked to Mr Dixon he said we were very young we were very young and stepped into that and so we owe our current culture with young Educators who are willing to step out of their comfort zones into the unknown of a new unfinished building coupled with a radical modular learning program that focused on the students as architects of their own learning and so we're really grateful for the culture that they established 50 years ago and Lori has worked on a lot of then and now which I thought is very interesting so I'm going to turn over to her at this point I started working at East last school year and when I was out on
045the roof inspecting a few things somebody told me that there was a sun deck where they held class and I thought it was a joke working on this project and saw the photos I was like Wow East has been a very welcoming campus and I knew that from day one when I stepped foot on there and just getting to know the faculty and the students has been just a pure joy and going back through the albums and hearing testimonies from former students as well as former employees at East High School just talking about the culture it is truly a heartbeat that has continued over these last 50 years so when the building was first opened as you heard from Mr Newell a lot of the facilities were not complete and so the students and faculty
046had to make do and be proactive and think outside of the box for example the PE and physical education classes they didn't have a gym so they use the Campus Commons as a place to have their class and they had dance lessons ping pong tables set up and even a trampoline in the Commons where they would have their physical activity classes now the Campus Commons is still a place where we express creativity unifying our student body for example our English classes hold Shakespeare performances our care our choir do care Christmas caroling we have the art Bowl and we also conduct the traditional paper toss with our seniors every year at East high schools supporting creativity individuality and artistic expression are essential components of the East High School's culture then when the school first opened students
047were introduced to a variety of visual art programs such as Pottery weaving and print making the choir while they held classes in the stairways to rehearse they consisted of 15 girls in their swing choir they had their performance in February through March and May and because choir Halls were incomplete they rehearsed in the stairways the band had a nickname called mob marching Olympian band now we are providing I have a very large visual arts program that includes 2D 3D art and photography many of our students are recognized annually in the Scholastic Visual Arts competition as well as showing in local art exhibits including in Nashville our East choir program has grown into three competitive choirs they're award-winning and we have over 110 students performing in our choir program and the band as another example is
048a combined band now of north and east and they have a Competitive Edge this year they moved up to the Grand Nationals bands of America competition which is a real big competition throughout the nation another way that our East culture continues to shine and grow and in keeping our students engaged our our student clubs and organizations then they had a Spanish club a chess club student assembly office Education Association Humane Society Deca and a sunshine Society now this is just a sample of all the clubs and organizations that we have we provide a wide variety of organizations meeting all different student needs and special interests as well as demographics we have a growing Multicultural Club our HOSA health science programs continue to flourish we have a key club that does a lot of community service
049where our weight lifting Club is continuing to grow and talking about health and fitness and just today somebody presented to Mr Noel about having a happiness club and so that kind of connects with like the sunshine society that used to be there um so this is just a sample of ways that our our culture continues to shine and grow and how we continue to engage students in our campus questions from the board at this time I thought it was interesting Mr Noodle to see Danny Dixon and student teaching I then taught student taught under Mr Dixon yeah in math some years after that a pair of shoes like that I did not have a pair of shoes I'm curious if you could talk a little bit about how over the years I know sometimes we
050move best practices from one place of the corporation to the other as things have moved back and forth ideas and Concepts and techniques from east to North or even to uh new tech do any stick out for you as something that you're really proud of that started at East that's now implemented somewhere else or vice versa something I think senior projects will come to mind immediately is that he's part of the senior projects and then that has flowed out to the other schools in senior projects it sounded like go all the way back to the beginning of the building no that was in 20 it's been 24 years ago is when we started senior projects thank you I'd say it's nice to see the evolution you know over time and it was a Showcase of
051what I would say creativity and inclusion and there are lots of examples of that then and now a culture can be fragile though sometimes and so what what do you feel like has been the key of keeping some of those old core beliefs and things in place so many years later through pandemics and technology and all of the things that can kind of draw us away from some of those important aspects I think it's the students I really do I think the students some I just keeps like transferring from student to students the years through I mean when I first went in the east as math department first I went to East I was at Northeast math and I went over there for textbook adoption I was like this is really different I was up
052on the resource floor on that and then I was fortunate to be a math department chair and just how the students created you and talk to you it's just a very very mature feel to the building and I think the students have helped carry that along with the leadership of the adults in the building foreign but I have a comment thanks for taking us back I'm a graduate of Columbus East High School I remember the six the the mods I remember going out and working in the afternoon I was part of the office Education Association so it wasn't back in 1972 but a little later than that but um I I've always been um I've always had a special place for Columbus East High School since I am a graduate there so I think that
053I think I love that you showed that then and now pictures that was great but um I really do think from like I guess I'm going to kind of build on a little bit maybe what uh maybe Dr Stenner and or Mr stunner and Miss wielton ask is are I know they don't have the Six Day schedule anymore but what are some things that you that you feel like you've improved or changed over the years since the early days so when I look at that and when I talk to some other folks that early model was really good for the students who were really motivated but the students who needed more support it wasn't as good a system on that and so that's why you seem more structured when you come into places support all
054the students and the piece I think that's probably the evolution that we've seen through the years is how do we get support for those students who aren't being successful in this model and at the same time don't take away the students are doing fine with that that freedom and responsibility don't take that away from them but how do you bring in the more support for the kids who aren't being successful in that model and I think that's what we've been working towards thanks I was going to ask I'm curious what you look for or what your special question is when you're hiring a new teacher for East I forgot to say in my in my Spiel there but one of the questions we ask is how good are you living in the world of Gray
055you know can you can we explain to what this is what this is what it means there's no Black and Whites here are you good with gray and having some some mixed things there and it's not cut out and dried and then um another question always like does fair mean equal and just add them straight up do the how burst are they in equity and that we always have that classic example of their standing in the Outfield and they need to look over the fence you've got some kid staying on a ladder a box another person's telling a steer the fence you know does fair mean equal no fair does not mean equal fair means every student get what they need to be successful so those are two questions that we always look for okay
056thank you there are other questions yeah yes yeah I don't have a question I've just got a couple comments and just wanted to thank you too for sharing about the rather unique culture that exists at Easton and sharing the history lesson of East 50 year history it's it's kind of cool to look back at some of the old pictures and see how things work but I also wanted to just say that I I you know really appreciate the forward thinking that goes on at the East and at least in my opinion while the Forward Thinking goes on you're still able to manage to hold on to some of that old-school approach with a particular emphasis on I think relationships and and responsibility and I particularly like what you said there Mr Newell at the end
057about uh you know asking prospective teachers about how well you know they might exist in a world of gray and I I think that's very important so thank you but both very much ahead thank you it was lovely foreign agenda are opportunities for board commendations so I'll turn to colleagues I know Mr Grimes will have some you need to speak all right well I'll go I'll try to get through these quick I'll start with a couple that I sat on from our last meeting um for the sake of time but uh so I'll start with some comments from Mrs sprawl the principal at Mount Healthy who we heard a presentation from at our last board meeting about their intentional efforts this year to include uh parents and families at their school and Mrs sprong just
058wanted me to pass on publicly accommodations to the office staff the classified staff and the teachers at Mount Healthy all for their uh dedication and going overboard making field you know students parents feel welcome and you know showing students sincerely how much they they care about kids on a daily basis and also Mr sprung wanted me to share specifically Mount healthy's day shift custodian Ryan Carter who she had Oodles of compliments for said he goes out of his way to Mentor students in their school job each day never complains responds quickly to the various demands of his job on a daily basis so thank you to all those the staff and uh students of Mount Healthy next Mr Gable the CVP director Columbus virtual pathway wanted me to share a couple things accommodations to Mrs
059Caruso and Mrs Terry who took a small group of students from CVP to the Indiana Historical Society where they were able to visit the exhibit on documents that shaped American history also accommodations to miss Rydell who has worked hard to have various in-person experiences for elementary age kids at CVP this year so even though it's Columbus virtual pathway the importance of occasionally meeting in person with peers and and getting out out of the you know the four walls of I guess this case their bedroom living room wherever they're learning and experience in the world is very important um also Mr Newell um we just heard from from East wanted me to share a couple of accommodations the two Bartholomew County winners of the Lilly scholarship this year are both from Columbus East seniors Ariana Simpson
060and Hallie Randall congratulations to them and Mr Newell said it was great to surprise him with a room full of family friends in the Lily committee it was very heartwarming to see the opportunities opened up for them through this scholarship and then also for Mr Newell e senior Sage Saul who's headed to Indiana State on a basketball scholarship next year just recently named district District 3 girls basketball player of the week by the Indiana high school basketball coaches association and what Mr Newell had to say about Sage is that she's a quality person both on and off the court and when he sent me the email he had just come from the math resource where Sage was tutoring appear in math during their advisory time again one of those uh unique things about East the
061next two accommodations I want to share I think are exceptional and I think they're ones that can real easily fly under the radar at times they're sports related but yet they're much larger than that the first goes to the Columbus North boys basketball team and uh and their coach Paul Ferguson on receiving an exemplary behavior report following a recent victory at Seymour and part of the official Tim Cody's report to the ihsa read and I want to read it it says I wanted to acknowledge the coach staff and players for their outstanding sportsmanship I've had coach Ferguson a couple times in part in the past and he always asked questions in a professional respectful Manner and focuses his attention on coaching his players the players exhibited polite respectful conversation and handed the ball to the
062officials every time I admire the way coach Ferguson his players and staff conduct themselves and then nextly along the same lines if I can find it sorry goes to Columbus East girls basketball team and their Coach Danny Brown who also received an exemplary behavior report following their game against Brownstown November 22nd and Joshua's fear is the one of the games officials he wrote the entire Columbus East girls basketball team exhibited the epitome of sportsmanship the players always offered a hand to help out a fallen opposing player always thank the officials every time they were handed the ball and treated every participant with the utmost respect if all teams behaved in this manner there would not be a lack of officials Columbus East girls basketball program represents everything that should be represented in Scholastic Athletics and
063they bring great credit to their school and community so thank you very much to those those teams um next the Columbus North Beta Club which I was unfamiliar with the assistant principal at North Jennifer Hester uh shared with me that the Beta Club is focused on academic achievement and character building and students meet regularly as a club to prepare for competition in their areas of passion and so congratulations to seven students who were recently first place in their state competition one second place one third place sponsored by Robin crew and it's just a plethora of academic subjects that they compete in everything from science to speech to painting to drawing to biomedical Health Sciences and everything in between um uh three more quickies my family and I had the opportunity to go see elf yesterday
064at North so just commendations to all that the cast and crew and everybody else who was involved on putting putting on such a good show and then um accommodations to Mary Hamlin uh Mrs day off Dwyer mentioned her earlier the bcsc transaction transition coordinator who recently received the Arc of Indiana's Champion award the award recognizes an individual organization or business who makes a positive impact in the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities Mary was chosen for her many years of hard work and dedication to Bartholomew County Special Education efforts as well as their work in spearheading the start of the Empower program and then lastly accommodations to Dr Roberts who at the recent Indiana Association of public school superintendent's annual meeting was given the uh was awarded with the Indiana edtech Trailblazer award
065and the award honors the Indiana and Indiana superintendent or assistant superintendent has promoted who has promoted and supported Innovative uses of technology in their district and Dr Roberts just a note that Dr Roberts was was rather quick to deflect credit to Nick Williams and his uh technology team and all their hard hard work in in regards to technology throughout the district so that I believe concludes it thank you thank you Mr Grimes are there others I I would like to commend the team who put together the formal at East this weekend I had a participant she had an amazing time and I can't imagine the amount of work that goes in to putting something like that together for all those high schoolers did a really great job all right thank you so much others I'll
066just yeah add on to what Mr Grimes was saying about technology is apparent I've seen technology improve with the way that things come home and the newest version parent square is pretty amazing so congratulations to the people that picked that out implemented it and keep it up and running thank you awesome all right we'll move on we don't have anyone that is signed up for public comments so now's an opportunity for colleagues to share reports our committees our work that they've been doing in the name of our Corporation thank you okay go for it thank you doctor so I've got three uh Street thanks here um one is a high ability stakeholder team uh just met on November 21st where we reviewed and discussed um the current counseling guidance plan for the high ability program
067and and you know changes considerations to make moving forward and just uh I wanted to make special mention um of a senior at Columbus North Isha Eris who has been with us at each of our monthly meetings evening meetings and has provided uh endless valuable input from her perspective as a student regarding the program and then we will meet again the high ability team we'll meet again this Thursday night when our topic of discussion will be professional development moving forward secondly the school Foundation Saturday put on cookies with Santa event um I had the opportunity to take three of our grandsons and I know they had fun getting pictures with Santa and coloring pictures and decorating cookies but there was a rush at eight o'clock as the doors opened and it was a pretty steady
068steam of bcsc families uh throughout the morning until 11 o'clock when the festivities concluded it's a little ways off but it'll be here before we know it the Harlem Wizards game which is the foundation's biggest fundraiser of the year has been set for Sunday March 5 at 2 o'clock I still need a lot of volunteers for that event and anybody who's interested in considering that can email the foundation directly executive director of the foundation Nicole Cunningham would like me to also report that the foundation is still very gladly accepting any end of the year donations that may come forward that will be used primarily to fund lightning grants and last one I was able to to attend a webinar on December 8th that was jointly put on by Indiana Association of public school superintendents and
069the Indiana Urban School Association of which bcsc is part of the 35 largest school districts in Indiana it was a essentially a brief presentation on the legislative priorities as we head into this upcoming session of the general assembly that's set to convene on January 9th and conclude by April 29 I'm sure there will be oodles and bills that will be released by the last of this month the first of next month December 15th Thursday fingers crossed we get to hear a revenue forecast for the next biennium and again fingers crossed that that is deliver some good news and just a few other items highlights that are priorities for both is PA and iusa heading into this next general assembly session currently most school districts across the state are spending four more far more dollars on
070edge special education than they're receiving and so isba will be certainly advocating for increased special education money in order for those programs to be fully funded they'll continue a push to increase the tuition support at a percentage that at least matches the rate of inflation isba is going to push to bring back a mentor program that existed a ways back that would help approximately 3 000 new teachers in Indiana each year by providing them a mentor and hopefully giving them the support that they may need in order to help the retention rate and encourage newbies if you will to stay in the profession you know that would be a thousand dollar stipend for mentors for a total of three million a year and then uh lastly the Family Social Services Administration their data set as
071compared to the Indiana Department of Education data set there's going to be increased efforts to make sure those Jive if you will and they share common unique identifiers to facilitate the matching of students as identified in the current complexity index because as things currently stand tens of thousands of students across Indiana are not being correctly identified consequently School corporations are not getting the funding that they otherwise would get at nearly four thousand dollars per student each year and that's probably again primarily affects the 35 largest school corporations in Indiana bcsc being one of those and then last thing the isba does plan to acknowledge the general assembly's efforts in the last two biennia in in terms of their help to help boost the state tuition support thank you thank you very much others the education
072Hall of Fame committee met at the end of November and we have um reviewed all the nominations and this year we'll be presenting to education Hall of Famers and that will happen in early 2024. sorry 23 let's try 23. sorry I discovered it's like okay I'm getting ahead of myself so in 23 so um notices will be going out we'll have a reception for our two individuals and we're very excited on who they are so thank you all right um the Bartholomew County Redevelopment commission actually met today reviewed budget they're starting to accumulate some funds which means they need a lawyer and a Financial Services Group to help them manage that okay so so I think they're going to vote on those contracts in the next meeting January 9th if anyone's interested in that okay
073thank you anyone else districting and Facilities committee met recently uh we have two main agenda items one was to review the Parkside School renovation program in progress and then the second was to continue our work looking at the demographic study that was done and looking at capacity and plans for in particular elementary schools I think we meet Dr Boseman said we'll meet again maybe before the end of the year maybe in January awesome the bcsc advisory committee met on November 18th it was an amazing presentation thinking about um what is special about bcsc it's really hard to name one thing but we had an excellent presentation by Rhonda Laswell and Tina green on udl and they've come up with this fabulous way to integrate all of the issues all of the approaches that we have
074to our Learners here in bcsc thinking about udl PBIS our inclusion efforts all of these things you've already heard this evening and they've put together this very effective graphic that is just wonderful in how it speaks to Maslow's hierarchy Bloom how all of those are integrated and and how udl and all of our work here at bcsc integrates that for those of you who will be new in these leadership roles I highly recommend that you learn about these things and everything that's going on here in bcsc and I noticed in my notes that um It just fits what we've been talking about so far one of the last quotes that I heard in the meeting was you can't teach the Mind whose heart you haven't touched we get to hear our transportation report next I
075will turn to Dr Bozeman good evening thank you for making some time periodically from the operations Department we like to bring our individual departments to you for a presentation and an update on happenings tonight we'll hear from our transportation department from our director AJ McKean and our safety coordinator Lisa Wheeler who will highlight uh what they're focusing on within the department and how they work with more than 100 of our employees at tnm as to keep our kids safe on the way to and from school as those are extensions of the classroom so I will turn it over to AJ thank you for the opportunity to come speak this evening I would like to quickly recognize these folks these 16 folks work in the office building they're behind the scenes every day working diligently to
076make sure our 8 500 kids that we transport every day get to and from where they need to safely not to mention the 140 bus drivers and monitors that work every day to transport those students safely so I just want to recognize these folks that do an outstanding job just these 16 folks in the office have over 200 years of experience in student transportation so that's it's a huge huge deal for them so what I'd like to go over first and as Kathy stated earlier Bartholomew was the first School District in the state to get three point seat belts on school buses and we continue that today and I'll have you to report that we only have five buses left in our Fleet that do not have seat belts and those buses will be going
077out of service shortly they're on the spare line right now so we have been able to replace all the buses and have pretty much the safest buses that there are available to transport our children every day this 360 view camera system is something we've had put on the buses here in the last couple years as you can see from the picture on the left it's an overview there are four cameras around the bus when a driver pulls up to a stop extends their stop arm it will show all four cameras at the same time in the rear view mirror of the bus so as the bus drivers stopped they can see if a student is walking around next to the bus it will actually show up in that camera that could possibly be in a
078blind spot while they're doing that also while they're driving down the road if you're making a right-hand turn the right hand camera will light up same for the left and if you're backing up the rear camera will light up as well it's it's pretty neat feature you can't really make out what the person is you can just tell there's something there moving so it's really hard to see but you can definitely tell that there's something there we did a very big upgrade over the summer for stop arm cameras uh to help eliminate drivers running the stop arms or the buses are picking up the children every day as of right now this was put out in August when we started the school year you've had 60 plus tickets issued and this number goes up daily
079it's kind of been a learning curve with the bus drivers too as to when this system records the the entire stop so if the bus driver doesn't properly do a bus stop which that doesn't mean that they're they're breaking any laws but if they have not come to a complete stop before they extend their stop arm or something that's that's minute it's not when they say somebody's ran their stop arm that's not a submissible stop arm violation in court so they have to the bus has to be completely stopped before they extend their stop arm and at that point if somebody proceeds to their stop arm then they have they have broke the law so it's kind of been about training issue on our end but it it's worked out really well and it's a
080officer Q has got her work cut out for we've actually had so many violations that we've had to actually hire somebody else to just deal with stop arm violations and that's what she does every day one of the new technologies that's on the buses it just came on the 12 that we received last month is a collision avoidance system as you see the picture on the right it's a little black box it's in the front bumper and this actually will break the bus for you it will take control of the bus and to avoid a rear end collision if you get too close to the vehicle uh in front of you the screen to the left is part of that system I mean it can actually tell you the speed of the vehicle in front
081of you it can this system also has rollover control so if a bus driver is entering a curve too fast it'll actually take the the bus take control over the bus and make the transmission go on free fall and it will put the brakes on on the bus to keep the bus from rolling over we have also upgraded the internal cameras this summer the new buses have the cameras on the pictures to the left that are actually in the side curtain of the bus we've decided to go with a different setup for the cameras because as you can tell with this the seat height and the bus we don't have that you can't there's no way that you can get all the dead spots in the bus so we've decided to put them down the
082curtain which face across the bus that way it shows all the seats you can look down each Road seats of the bus and so there's no dead spots so any issues that we can see on the bus or happen on a bus we can see at this point and we do have forward-facing cameras now and windshields at the buses so if there's any instances any accidents that happen on a bus or any of that sort it also helps with stop arm violations at this time I would like to introduce Lisa she's in charge of our safety for the school buses and she's going to talk about our safety team and what they do with the kiddos I'm in charge of the safety team and our safety team visits each Elementary and parochial schools each year
083to do bus safety with a pre-k through sixth grade we've been doing this now for about 20 years maybe a little more than that our goal is not to show the students why the rules exist but I mean we want to show our goal is to show students why the rules are there instead of just telling them this is the way it is there's a reason why every rule is put in place on the buses grades pre-k through third we watch they watch a video or a puppet show some of the puppeteers skits includes the bus rules the point in motion signaled across the street if a child has to cross the street we want him to be able to cross safely and that point in motion is something that we started several years ago
084that not every school in the state of Indiana they don't do it that includes the point to the student and the direction to go across the street if a child does not see the point and the motion they do not cross the street so we instruct all of our drivers to do this there's our new little friend Buster this is our puppet show here that we give to the students grades four through six have classroom time learning how to properly wear the seat belts why we shouldn't eat on the bus and there's a lot of reasons why we shouldn't do that where to stand at the bus stops is going to have a wreck and then all grades uh pre-k through six go out to the buses and we do a bus evacuation and learn
085how to get out of a bus safely and the children really enjoy that and this is some of that um going on here with pictures this is bustered the bus he's new to our safety team the kids are going to absolutely love him um he's um he's going to talk he's going to move around sometimes he's going to sit quietly and just listen like we asked them to do on the buses he's going to make funny fun he's going to make learning safety fun and that's what it's all about because if they're having fun they're learning and that's what we want him to do buster will interact with the students giving them information about safety and give the students to us a chance to ask questions [Music] foreign this is him he can um of
086course he can move around he can spray water he has like a gun in the front not a gun but a a little spigot in the front that will squirt water on the children to get their attention oh there you go he has a speaker on him so we can actually put a headset on and we can give our bus program instruction through the speaker to the to Buster and the speakers on him are in the wheels so we're really excited because not everyone has this and I know that the students is going to love it [Music] I think the adults are having a little fun with this too yeah yeah so anybody have any questions awesome thank you thank you I don't think I have really a question I just want to commend you
087both and Dr Boseman on continue keeping our kids safe during transportation to all the events that we go to I know the first year that we had discussions and my kids and husband hears this all the time of the safety belt issue you know it was one of those that it was kind of going south and then I mentioned about I see the bus as the game Yahtzee and our kids are the dice and if a bus should be hit or rolled over when they're unsecure in the in the bus it's like playing the game of Yahtzee whatever dice comes up could mean that that's your child either ejected from the bus or under the seats wrapped around somehow and it would not be a very positive event right and the other thing is we
088were having double standards we wear safety belts in our vehicles personal vehicles on airplanes and such and that there's some reason why we shouldn't have belts on our most prized possessions and we should set the standards and I'm glad to hear we only have five and I really like the cameras and look forward to hopefully less tickets because people will pay attention and if not then I think the fines for the tickets should go at least three to four times higher than what they are if they don't get it the first time so thank you thank you there are other questions I have one sure on your uh Collision control device does the bus have to go a certain speed you know even if it's more like it's just moving it will stop okay thank
089you AJ who gets to drive bus the Buster that's curious hey you guys have a tough job 60 tickets that's scary is that super scary I don't know how much more that would be before we had the cameras you know obviously I think the cameras hopefully make it an easier case but that that's that's pretty scary um and and I'd also say you you have a tough job rules are in place safety rules are a place to keep us safe and we can all appreciate that but kids don't always appreciate it and having to discipline on things like that is not easy like you guys end up having to be the bad guys it's not a fun job it's a very important job I received a ticket for my kids not wearing their safety belt
090so you can imagine the conversation I had with them um when I got those tickets home and my youngest daughter who had been through one of these safety talks she's in third grade got to tell her sixth grade brother what she learned and why he was doing the wrong thing too so your message is reaching some of some of this kids so thank you for that every year wonderful Instagram just yeah just super quick yeah thank you for the updates very informative from the you know the 360 view to the internal cameras and just to follow up what a couple others already said you know it seems pretty sad or maybe unfortunate is a better word to have so many stop-arm violations that you have to devote a person um just to keep track of
091that on a daily basis and you know hopefully as time goes on that will become um less necessary sure we had a car the other day that ran the stop arm come around behind the bus ran the stop arm and did a uni in front of the bus came back and run the stop arm again so we see it all I guess Buster should have been out there shooting water around here thank you so very much thanks for sharing Buster with us hahaha all right it's time for our list of approvals Dr Roberts thank you Dr shitz so you do have a list of approvals in front of you so minutes of the regular school board meeting of November 14th that was our last regular meeting you did hold two executive sessions last week December
0925th and December 9th you have supplemental contracts field trips and professional lease as well as school fundraisers additionally a set of claims from December 12th dated today that's almost 1.4 million dollars then a pre-run for the month of November November 1st through November 30th that was about 4.4 million dollars the payroll total is about 7.6 million dollars and covers check dates of November 18th and December 2nd covers the work periods of October 24th through November 20th and then we did have the additional check last Friday for the teacher appreciation Grant stipends each year you approve the policy in terms of how we distribute that amount of money and so once we get that those dollars from the state we were able to get those out to all staff members on this past Friday December the
0939th additionally we have a other approval of the guaranteed maximum price for educational improvements Dr Boseman keeps bringing those to you we are asking also for permission to declare some C4 equipment obsolete that is a a process we have to go through just from from getting that approval from you than to do other stuff with that equipment and then also we do are asking to reduce the expulsion examiner's determination regarding student discipline you have that information that updated information in front of you this evening on that particular item as well I believe yes those are my list of items thank you very much so I'll entertain a motion for a proven items three a through H as they are presented to us so moved thank you Dr Bill is a second thank you Mr Grime

095hofdwire is there a second second thank you Mr Bryant any questions there won't be a quiz on what we read um all right so if approval if you do approve those Human Resources recommendations that we've read in our packet if you would signify by saying aye those opposed there you go Dr please thank you all right an opportunity for a board input review for Brian I Dr shed Kathy you was here when I got on this port unfortunately you all made a mistake in voting me on but anyway I'm going to miss you the laughter the funds that we have had to stand up and doing the right thing for not just our students but for our teachers it's been fun it's been a joy and it's been my pleasure Dr Bells the four years
