001they're gonna play that oh ladies [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] oh good evening welcome to max andrus field we're in week two of the high school football season for the 22-23 school year and it's the crosstown rivalry the no the host north bulldogs hosting their neighbors across town columbus east olympians coming to town for our first uh post no bad weather no covid encounter we've had here for a while i'm brett bozeman joined by superintendent of bcsc schools dr jim roberts fortunate to have a good sidekick here today dr roberts thanks for thanks for making time to join us and looking forward to a good ballgame tonight bret thank you very glad to be here tonight this uh crosstown confrontation going to be very interesting for us tonight as you indicated this is
002the first time with all the stuff that we've had over the last couple of years two years ago we were here but a more limited crowd with everything that was going on and columbus got the win that night and i think interestingly enough in my time here uh in columbus that's the only win columbus east has had against columbus north so interesting to see two years later what that looks like here at max anders field tonight it's always a good game regardless of who the who is on the field and throw the records in the history out the window as everybody in this town well well knows that this this game can can always go either direction even in a few years ago when east is winning state championships there were times where they uh
003they had their loan lost to the bulldogs that season so always a good contest and as you mentioned it's great to great to get back together and and have uh so many people from the community here here together you may remember last year we had weather matter of fact we had weather issues all all week last week or last year rather with soccer cancellations and lightning delays and so on and so forth and this game was actually played on on saturday morning so good to get everybody back together here and and fill the stadium up with lots of blue and orange yeah you mentioned the competition between these two and you just never know what you're going to get you know both teams going to play as hard as they can and it may come
004down to that last possession whoever has the ball last in terms of of getting the victory but you mentioned the the competition and how close it has been in terms of the the wins and losses and right now as we head into this game tonight it's 26 to 25 in terms of north leading 26 wins versus east 25 over over the period of years so that's about as close as you can get one team having one more win than the other i'd say so with an odd number of total games can't have any closer again can't be any closer that's a math teacher so it took me a moment to clearly figure that out yeah you may recall last year the the dogs defeated the the olympians quarterback luke hammonds and also center or a
005senior as well keegan caster caught fire in the second quarter cassette had three touchdowns in that contest and hammond's had uh 111 yards and and two throwing touchdowns in that 28-0 decision last week both teams had fallen to good opponents north was on the road to a highly ranked 5a decatur central team and lost 26 to 12 although that game was much closer than that school that score would have indicated north had a chance to actually take the lead in the third quarter of that contest and east also lost their home opener last week to whiteland in a case where they actually led that game at halftime and whiteland got the upper hand in the in the second half whiteland also a formidable 5a opponent ranked as well so hard to hard to predict exactly
006what team is where only on week two going into the uh the season here so far but certainly uh faced two good opponents in week one yeah it's certainly the case it hard to tell what we're going to get tonight as as we think back to last week i had a chance to be at the east game and they looked very good that first half and whiteland i think is ranked number five maybe in 5a and and you mentioned decatur central with columbus north ranked number two so both teams playing very quality opponents and holding their own in that game and we'll see how that carries over and what we picked up and learned each team over this last week getting ready for tonight bulldogs are led by quarterback zach horn he's a 6-3 195
007senior looking forward to a good season without injury here he's a good athletic kid comes to north by way of central middle school by way of southside elementary tyler blyth having a majority of the carries last week 15 carries for 66 yards is long being 44 yards tyler you may recall played a lot of receiver in slot last season and had plenty of touches and was certainly a threat on the field so he moves her running back this year looking forward to see how those two connect and then the other standout so far at least cooper horn just a really athletic kid 63 185 senior dual sport athlete ball gets his hand and he he can certainly cause problems for for opponents you look at that as you cite the statistics from columbus north last
008week brett in comparison columbus east a little different in terms of several kids getting some carries and picking up some yards four different kids uh carrying the ball last week led by tyler weller with 61 yards but right behind him ethan duncan the quarterback with 59 and then receiving yards just just the three guys getting passes with with one chase zappy with two catches comparatively columbus north had four different kids with significant number of uh catches led by damon edwards with 10 and 100 yards so a little bit different styles of play perhaps on the offensive side of the ball we'll see how that carries out this evening looking ahead at some of the olympian starters they're led by ethan duncan who was the commander-in-chief last year as a junior this year he's a senior
009coming into the contest here he comes to east via northside middle school via rock creek elementary tailback javion smith last week you mentioned 18 carries had a uh heavy heavy dose of work there 51 yards jay the on former schmidt rocket dr roberts by way of central middle school don't ask me how i know these things but i i just do a few other few of the kiddos that will mention on the the east olympian starting crew chase harrison uh number 34 is a linebacker he's a good player he's he's uh he fills gaps well he's played that position for a while now had five solo tackles last week against whiteland certainly a kid that can that can play at the next level and and as we get in some looks and you mentioned chase
010zaffy he's a he's a senior uh wide receiver um he's a tough kid good athletic kid he's got good feet and certainly is a threat if the if the ball can get in his hands as well you mentioned ethan brett and very interested to see how how he looks tonight after not a lot of throws last year i don't know how many tosses he had last year but it seemed like last week that very first quarter he had about as many passes as he had during the last season a year ago so ethan was five for 17 17 attempts so columbus he's trying to get the ball in the air a little bit more perhaps this year so curious is how that will look tonight as as east approaches the offensive side of things coach
011eddie vogel leads the columbus east olympians it's his second season as the head coach of the east he's been a long time assistant and associate head coach at east high school as we all know for quite a while he was four and seven last year 15 and 30 overall in his fifth season as a head coach but if you go back to his previous coaching experience in evansville before he came to columbus uh jim you have to go all the way back to the 19s when he was at boston high school in 1999 and then uh was there for a couple years until 2001 before he came to luther's family to columbus so on the other side of the field wearing wearing blue is logan haston he's the first year coach first year head coach
012here in columbus north comes to columbus by way of fishers where he was the offensive coordinator for the past few years logan's a good guy he's full of energy and seems to be doing things the right way here at columbus north so far and the kids seem to be responding well to him he of course is owen won after just the one contest that he had last week so looking forward to um i know he's looking forward to this contest and probably doesn't know exactly what he's in for in terms of how many people here but it's certainly going to be a lot of fun and uh something to be memorable looking back yeah you mentioned those two coaches brett and quite the difference there in terms of uh 1999 coach vogel getting his first
013game as a head coach 23 years later luke getting his first one on the sideline of course first game last week second one here but this is uh this is a great environment great contest i'm sure um logan very very excited about getting things going and not only logan you um mentioning the columbus north athletic director brian lewis uh he hosted this game two years ago but again under very different circumstances so brian probably a little more anxious this week getting ready for tonight knowing he has a full packed house to prepare for and and whatever he did he did a nice job ordering the weather uh it is perfect maybe a little warm but uh nice weather this evening a slight breeze out of the north not enough to make any kind of a
014difference but yeah i had a chance to talk to brian on tuesday and and even on that day i had asked him i said brian how many people have told you that you don't know what you're getting into yet and he said far too many he's well well aware so uh yeah ryan being certainly doing a great job at columbus north high school and both these coaches and athletic directors of pete hughes at east high school they they do things well they do things the right way they do things in the best interest the kids and community and and the the the city's fortunate to to have the four of them uh leading athletic programs here i'll certainly second that bro very fortunate to have brian and pete in their positions and uh two positions
015that most people probably don't quite understand that role in the time that they put into it but it is a lot and particularly this week you know we both had a chance to maybe attend a soccer game or two and they're running those and by the way great crowds over those two nights at our new soccer stadium with three to four thousand people i think in attendance each evening and great contest in those zero to zero draws that we had for both the girls and boys games i'm not sure that's ever happened uh in the columbus east columbus north soccer series i would have i would assume not i i don't know much about soccer but uh i i can tell you i would i would hate to be a goalie with on either team
016either either team either either game of having that kind of pressure of having a zero zero game and yeah and they they locked them down both ways it was uh it was something else for sure yeah most games that we pay attention to you can make a mistake and probably get away with it based upon the number of minutes that are still going to happen in the game another number of other situations soccer maybe not so much so great great competition this week in this east north rivalry week number 50. looks like east is going to win the toss and choose to defer to the second half so north will receive north will receive going away from the building facing north towards the scoreboard just getting ready to say dr roberts that uh number 51
017coming off the field right now as a captain save savion miles yes he's he's a talented kid he's one to watch for sure former schmidt rocket former clifty creek cougar but uh savion will he will certainly play football at the next level he has a few division two offers um very nice kid kind of kid that's always got a smile on his face he'll uh he'll bury you on the football field but he'll pick you up and smile at you when he's when he's uh when the play is over so uh but certainly a talent out here tonight and one to keep an eye on yeah definitely looking forward to seeing savion play can wreak havoc in the backfield but as you said just a great kid it's exciting about ready for kickoff as he
018gets ready to tee it up and kick off to columbus north to start this east north contest number three nathaniel hedrick is the kicker for east he's going to move the ball to the right hash get the ball just inside that shadow of the press box a little bit daniel's a senior at columbus east high school he's going to kick away from the board from north to south my left to my right and back deep for the dogs i'm sure tyler blythe is back there looks like he is i'm going to assume that's damon edwards on the other side both of those young men seniors damon edward edwards former schmidt rocket doctor a few schmidt rockets out here tonight blight's going to receive that ball off the two-yard line gonna come up the left hash
019and he's going to be wrapped up quickly at the 17-yard line good coverage there by east high school credit that tackled to devon to colby number eight for east 6-1-165 senior that's where north is going to start with the ball 17-yard line left hash mentioned before that number 18 zack horn is a quarterback he's in the gun with a single setback edward's in motion the give is to blythe and he's going to get a couple of yards up ahead maybe not maybe maybe just one stacked up pretty quick looks like a gain of a yard so we'll be at second and nine conrad eggers credited with the tackle there for east high school number 56 also a senior second nine they will give him a yard of progress here the ball is on the 18
020yard line just starting here zero zero 11 30 to go in the first quarter north with a tight bunch formation to the boundary the pitch to the boundary a little toss swallowed up quickly that time that's by number six brennan cohen senior for east high school bring up third down that's gonna be a loss of about four yards brett so that'll push us it looks like third and 12. he's reacting very quickly to that one it is third and 12 on the board ball in the 15 yard line ball still in the left hash and north is going to come out with a two by two set with a tight end horn and the gun empty with no protection see if these will blitz they will blitz horn's got pressure the ball is thrown short
021and that's gonna be up fourth down yeah more olympians around that ball than uh bulldogs may be lucky to not have that picked off at around the 20-yard line fourth down not a good start for the dogs here that might have been a that might have been an upstairs uh called blitz there because they saw pretty quickly that zach horn had no protection was in an empty set and uh i didn't catch the player's number but outside linebacker was an automatic blitz put pressure on the throw and here we are fourth down back to punts end over end on the middle of the field and this is gonna let it roll and it's gonna roll well it's helpful for the bulldogs all the way down to about the 32 yard line excellent punt there that's
022that's cooper horn he can do a lot of things out there about a 50 yard punt certainly certainly helpful turn the field over flip the field a little bit absolutely so here we go ball's on the 32 yard line left task as we mentioned before javion smith primary tailback ethan duncan out of the gun here double tight formation for east to give is to smith he's going to barrel up ahead and be stopped nowhere by guess who save you on miles miles right into a bunch of uh black jerseys there and they are gonna give him one yard so he'll be at second and nine and he's right back right back to the line of scrimmage no huddle as you mentioned two by two set with a single back to ethan's left he's gonna look
023to throw this time looks left out looks right now looks back left he's got pressure but good protection yeah somebody down field and that ball is just wow sure that's chase zappy we talked about him a little bit in pregame if he gets the ball yeah he got behind coverage and was wide open but uh ethan scrambling there a little bit and a little difficult to get his legs underneath him with that throw gotta expect there's a little bit of butterflies both ways early on here wouldn't you assume it's a lot of buildup for this game for these kids not just this year this is this is a moment for all these kids especially seniors same formation for east here's third and nine balm of 33. ethan's gonna look to throw in the flat it's

025good to begin this this particular game 908 here on the clock in the first quarter no score yet one possession each way no first downs yet for their team north will come out in i think north is they might be missing a kid they only have 10 in the field and pitches to blyth and good pursuit there by east ball might be oh maybe all might be out and it is like and [Music] that is he says yep gonna be considered a fumble and picked up around the two three yard line brett it is it is signaled east ball and that would be first and goal inside the five that's a tremendous turn there yeah so great pursuit again by the columbus east line got to him quickly and i'm not sure who it was
026brett but uh popped the ball loose and were able to chase it down there was about nine kids on that ball so i couldn't really uh in white shirts trips with the tight end formation here they give us to smith he's going to look for room and he's going to be brought down in the backfield there by number 24. that's a cyan guess he's a 511 200 pound middle linebacker senior for the dog second goal started the drive of the four at the five as you said second and goal and we're going to have a whistle flag illegal start it's going to move the ball back to about the nine or the ten here still be second down but it certainly changes things here a bit for coach vogel and the olympians 8 27 to

030yard line i think first and goal from the two of the three to start that off able to push them back and enforce the field goal so nice defensive stand by columbus north given where that that start of that drive was exactly that's a really really good point that was a big momentum change and on the road turnover inside the five and and uh actually a little bit of lost yardage and hold them to hold them to three that's a yes that's a win for the team in black for sure hedrick back to kick again he seems to be doing most of the footwork duties here for the olympians so far it's a good kick that might be in the end zone it is in the end zone and high school football you can't take
031it out of the end zone so north will start the ball first and 10 on the 20. so going back to starting drive position for columbus north it's been the 17 18 and now the 20 yard line so columbus is doing a nice job of keeping them back there to start with i'm just mentioning nathaniel hedrick he's the one to kick the field goal right he's been pretty accurate in his career as a kicker for columbus season showing some some foot there by getting it into the end zone on that kick two backs this time for for north zone re the ball is in tyler blythe's hand and he scrambles ahead for about three yards and call it second and seven yeah maybe besides a one-yard gain earlier the first positive yards on the ground
032for columbus north with starting their third drive i believe that sam armino is a second back there got a fly coming down again it's a false start on the bulldogs it looks like that's gonna be so i'm gonna guess that's gonna be on that tight end that was moving and wasn't didn't come set and erases those four yards they picked him on the ground backs them back up five and makes his second and 11. yeah it'll be interesting to make sure nobody gets somebody gets rattled on some early penalties here because there's certainly a lot of butterflies and these kids are nervous and there's going to be mistakes so the third one of the game two flags on east when they had a ball inside the 10 and first one on on the next set
033again for the dogs they give us to blight he's got a little bit of room again and gets ahead well maybe another six yards and bring it back to call it third and five it looks like he picked up each of the yards that they lost with the penalty third and five with the ball in the 25. i think we have bryce harriman on the turf here he's a 6-2 290 sophomore get him checked out hope he's okay he would have been one of the leading blockers on that on that drive for that rushing attempt well he's a big boy yes he is i don't know i don't know how big you were when you were a sophomore but i was not 6'2 290. i was not very big i wish i was speaking to
034speaking of good-sized kids for and and talented and athletic getting up on his under his own power bret's a good thing he's limping off the field our direction but number 75 is a player to keep an eye on as well it's drew schieffer he's a freshman and he's on the field he's uh he's a he's a great kid nice nice as can be as well but he's 6'3 260. uh and he is a i mean say true freshman like we're in college but he is a ninth grader out there playing uh actually means a heck of a lot more when you're a true freshman as a high school kid playing in a varsity football game there's typically there's a lot of difference going back to what we look like as freshmen yeah i didn't look
035like that no and would not have been able to play on the line i think we have another flag another flag here we're not getting set yeah oh no we got an equipment equipment check okay looks like i don't know my mistake a legal substitution on east yeah east uh defenders motioning toward north and that's not the case it is on them a legal substitution perhaps now that gives them a first down that's actually the first first down i think of the game with even points by east they were starting with a first and goal and uh so first first down of the game and it comes with a 6 27 to go in the first quarter it's not a very common penalty called so usually that that would be when you report into the
036game you have to come inside the numbers and then go back out so that might have been the case on that sideline i'm not sure but uh horn under center this time and they give us to blythe he's going to get some positive rushing yards again about a gain of six bring up second and fourth of line maybe starting to get some momentum this is the third time in a row getting uh winning the the battle at the line and getting some forward progress and that's six yards that time uh largest rush i think of the of the game thus far go back and talk about drew schieffer for a second aside from last week's game his last game that he played was against eighth graders right and now now he's in this one so
037good good for him in the gun this time they gave us to blythe again he's going to pick up the first day again across first down yardage about the 44 for first down that's about a 10-yard game brett and puts them on the 44-yard line first and ten checks back in looks like tyler's going to get a breather and their short one because they had yeah there we go that may be the second time earlier you you mentioned it they it looks like they may have only had ten players on the field when they ran a play i actually won that turnover earlier i i may have i made a mistake but i i was trying to call out the formations last night there's not enough kids on the quick count when you uh you
038said that i didn't get to 11. don't get set mormino with the carries scampering looking for room he runs a little bit differently jim that he's he's a smaller guy he's tough kid but he's hard to see in there and he was just looking being patient and got got about six more yards looks patient uh following his blockers well trying to understand where he can squeeze into and go and picks up several gets on the other other side of the 50-yard line for the first time in the game for columbus north sir they're at columbus east 49 second and three absolutely 445 and counting here in the first quarter east leads 3-0 same formation here two by two and we have a timeout by north take a timeout we got a first time out here
039so far and just i haven't taken a chance to look around but there's certainly certainly plenty of folks here and the bleachers are full and there's not a seat to be had so no i came in probably not too long after you bread around six o'clock for or so and already people starting to fill up the bleachers and yeah there aren't many seats available out there if if any and a lot of people standing as well just a wonderful evening and i love these kinds of situations with our our school system and the columbus north and columbus east thing and so many kids involved besides of course the football game and the number of kids participating the cheerleaders on both sides uh the band that we have that represents both schools we'll have a chance
040to to see them perform at halftime so a really fun evening for all of us it is certainly special and certainly unique we're back at it now yeah so again second and three from the 49 435 to go first quarter blythe in motion looks like damon edwards is a quarterback now and he's gonna keep it for about a gain of two and we'll call it third and one just shy of the first down thought maybe he had pushed the markers forward but they're going to call it just shy that's gonna be a short yard on third and one here same personnel in a huddle now i haven't seen a huddle yet dr roberts the huddle is when they all get together and circle like that and talk about what they do that hasn't happened nobody
041does that stuff anymore it's not cool i don't think i don't know to take your time and talk about things we got double tight formation edward's alone in the gun he's gonna keep it on a reed he's gonna get a first down and more across down to the 35 yard line for a bulldog first down almost tackled for a loss lit by that that attempted a tackle and plenty of yards to move things forward actually gets up to the 35-yard line so a nice drive going here for columbus north start at their own 20. so we're now you know 45 yards into this this particular drive zach horn back in at quarterback edwards goes out to the slot receiver empty set five receiver set trips now they're going to motion to quads horn on the
042scramble to the field side he's looking downfield he's got oh that ball is going to hit the turf second was in the red basket pop back out would have been a short just a short gain but incomplete pass second and ten interesting formation there with an empty set and then motion to quad sometimes uh sometimes coaches will do that just to see how the opposing team's gonna line up to it and usually you know at times one place sets up the next two or three down the road here so there's a lot of that that happens bunch formation of the boundary this time they're going to give is tyler blight he's got a seam he's up the sideline he's up the hash and he's tripped up at the 20-yard line that's another first down that's
043a 15-yard game for tyler first and ten at the east 20. so entering the red zone here columbus north starting to find their groove here a little bit savion miles going both ways i'm not sure i think he started as left guard also but he's certainly in there now edward's in motion they give us to blythe looking for room this time he's not going to go far and he's going to be wrapped up that's by number 85 blake borkhart he's a 6-1 200 pound junior for east he's able to stretch his body forward and get two yards out of that so second and eight at the 18. you know looking at this drive brett last week zach put the ball in the air 35 times and certainly not starting that way this evening this drive
044really any positive yardage maybe all positive yardage has been on the ground yeah it doesn't need to so far a two by two formation with a tight end to the field single back fake the gift ball in the air this time roll out he's going to throw it that ball is going to be complete down to about the 12 yard line that catches made by blake wilson 215 511 215 senior for the dogs blake settling that seam was wide open but he's recovered quickly and kept him from getting a first down so we're down to third and two about the 12. this third and two 148 on the clock and and counting here still the first quarter still three nothing o's play clock down to 13. might need to hustle a little bit here he's
045got a first down i think yes he was able to stay on his feet a little backwards step or two nice dance move to get it across the the marker and get it just inside the 10 yard line for a first in goal is first and goal ball is on the 10-yard line damon edwards i don't know we'll get stats here in a few minutes i'm not sure how many carries he has so far in this drive he had five carries last week for a total of eight yards so certainly already has that trumped here tonight and the dogs seem to like it edwards is going to keep it again looking for space the ball might be out the ball might be out seem late maybe if it came out of there certainly people are
046getting excited looks like it's going to stay with north yeah pickup of about four second and six as we are inside a minute here in the first quarter the the clock goes pretty quickly brett when you're keeping the ball on the ground and absolutely this just keeps rolling no stoppage of time leon brown hustles off the field and subbed in by zach horn who is back at quarterback empty set five receiver set trips to the field horn back to pass does not have much time throws it up to oh was caught i think yeah he still has it but uh called him out of bounds attended was cooper horn no-brainer to try to get the ball in his hands near the end zone oh nice job throwing it up to him and he went up
047and got him pulled it down but maybe carried out of bounds but just was not able to get the foot or feet pretty close we we have the benefit of being a little ahead of what you're seeing and we can see that on replay on the actual youtube feed here somewhere on the field there is there is no replay in high school football that one that one was close so third and goal play clock all the way down oh boy oh that's that's a flag yeah they did not get the play called or get the snap made so that's gonna back them up five it's still gonna be third down it's gonna be still third third and goal now though from the 11. yeah that was a that was a mess he was trying to
048do what north did earlier and stymie a first and goal situation and getting close to being able to do that big play here at third and third and goal edwards motions out of the bunch horn has pressure yeah a lot of pressure he's he's yeah yeah got to get rid of it he's got a good play throw it away nice very nice play by by zach under a ton of pressure if he goes down there they probably push him out of field goal range even or at least it was going to be a quite quite a long one that's a heck of a stop from columbus east they were seemed like they were on their heels all the way down the field until getting inside the 10-yard line and then it's and they really tightened

074your boys have played for east and in these games but from your perspective uh how is that how big of a deal is it leading up to it and all the anticipation and excitement well i'll tell you what brett if anything the motions you see after the game tell you how important this game was to the kids when you see these get kids uh you know how upset they get if they aren't able to come out on top in this crosstown rivalry sometimes it hurts more than it does when their season ends but then about five minutes later you see them talking and getting pictures with their friends from the other sideline um and it really just shows how special this game is and how special this community is to support two high schools the
075way we do it is a unique situation a lot of these kids have gone to elementary school together middle school together played on travel teams together and uh it is a special bond for sure that is damon edwards on the return right at the middle of the field he's got space and he got tackled at first there by number 89 that's jared brooks 511-185 sophomore making good play but a good return overall by north and that ball is going to be at about the 31 yard line 314 on the game they've got plenty of time in this before half time yeah they sure do and and based on how well they were running the ball previously uh there's really no reason not to continue to do so especially as you mentioned given the fact they
