001[Music] okay yes yep um oh [Music] thank you josh josh josh strong what's i so we will go ahead and get started tonight um [Music] born and raised in indianapolis mr vonnegut was a writer with 14 novels and a career that spanned more than 50 years he was a popular speaker at graduations and delivered a number of addresses between the years of 1969 all the way up to 2004. he actually has a collection of some of his graduation speeches in a book called if this isn't nice what is i'll be sharing a few of my favorite experts tonight from different speeches at one graduation he asked what should young people do with their lives today many things obviously but the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness

002can be cured in another speech he said i thank you all for becoming educated by becoming reasonable and informed person to make this a more rational world than it was before you got here i give you my word of honor that you graduates are near the very top of the best news i ever hear by working so hard at becoming wise and reasonable and well informed you've made our little planet our precious little voiced blue green ball a saner place than it was before you got here from a third speech thank you all and god bless those who made it possible for you to improve your minds and souls in the company of other students from across this country and from foreign nations besides most of you are preparing to enter fields which may be

003unattractive to greeting persons such as education or healing arts teaching may i say is the noblest profession of all in a democracy and this is the last excerpt we've got tonight mr bonigan said every graduation pep talk i've ever given has ended with words about my father's kid brother alex monica harvard educated insurance agent here in indianapolis who was well-read and wise my uncle alex is in heaven now one of the things he found objectionable about human beings was that we still rarely notice it when we are happy uncle alex himself did his best to acknowledge this when times were sweet we could be drinking lemonade in the shade of an apple tree in the summertime and uncle alex would interrupt us all to say if this isn't nice what is so i hope you

004will do the same for the rest of your lives when things are going sweetly and peacefully please pause a moment and then say out loud if this isn't nice what it is thank you mr stenner um i'd like now to invite those who are able to stand up of the united states um so first a lot of people in the room um but a lot more people that are outside of the room as we try to manage the number of uh individuals we are going to try to recognize here tonight but we will start off with uh just look at the recognitions on the uh powerpoint we're going to start off with one called the governor's award this is a a new situation for us i think the first time we had an opportunity to

005have someone in our organization given this award so i want to call senator greg walker to the podium of the state of indiana issued by the governor of the state and the award is entitled the circle reported this is in recognition of the early leaders who gathered important in 1816 to adopt the first indiana constitution and to create the state of indiana jordan was indiana's first capital and center of leadership in the early and formative years of the state like the founders of our great state there have been many others who have made remarkable contributions to the betterment of indiana and its people and therefore are deserving of consideration for membership in the indiana general assemblies circle accorded now you've made known that the illustrious benefactions of one kelly thompson for being recognized which she

006has demonstrated in life and in service to the people of the state of indiana the qualities exemplified by our state's greatest citizens henceforth being deemed worthy of such recognition kelly thompson is named above declared a distinguished member of the circle of court actually i just want to say that if i may have this recognition although there are many students and parents who wish to congratulate you on this award genesis 7 is really from your peers it's those you work with those who inspire those that have seen your sacrifice those who see you work above and be on call there are leaders who fulfill the role of leadership and there are those who are inspirational leaders and others follow that example not just the accolades not just the thanks for what you do but try to

007pattern their lives after the things that you have done and it's an inspirational leader so i want to thank you for your service to the students and parents to the faculty the staff and everyone that recognizes your great contribution to educational excellence in in our fair city very much yes oh okay thank you very much very much appreciate everything very complicated by the surprise thank you very much here jesus here all right thank you for your patience with us we want to make sure you get a photo there will kill you senator walker before we continued on and most of people don't know kelly thompson very well look back in the last couple of years in terms of helping us just kind of manage all the stuff that we had to the decisions that we

008had to make with code 19 and just so many other things that affect our kids so just pretty cool to be able to cover her award down here with center walker being able to present it to her so awesome stuff thank you for giving us time to do that we'll keep on rolling miss william and uh we have mr jensen that will come up and help us recognize a tremendous clovis north high school student keeping on the theme of awards from the governor's office uh the governor's stem team is probably one of the most prestigious not the most prestigious academic honor high school senior in the state of the award highlights four outstanding students in state for your exceptional efforts for accomplishments of science technology on math i think as you'll hear as i talk

009more about matthew he could have qualified for science just as well as his math so he is the math team member for the governor's four stem team members so we're really excited that he's a member of our community and our school district matthew's also the uh valedictorian north class of 2022. um throughout his high school career matthew has this is just amazing taking three dual credit mathematics courses at ball state taking several other dual credit courses outside the stem field served as a research assistant at morehouse school of medicine he believed his first authored paper while internet pioneer academic research was a national american finalist and scholarship planner other awards include u.s national chemistry olympiad two-time u.s math olympiad qualifier health occupation students of the students association national gold medal winner and medical math first

010place indiana high school math contest first place indiana state athlete three-time first place health occupation students competition in medical math first place state academic economy just goes on and on and on okay now we get into some of career activities president of the health occupation students association club student bike treasurer member of the student athletic board national hour society captain indiana academic team interdisciplinary teams the bay club key club student assembly triangle magazine captain the boys tennis team their four-year starter for state qualifying tennis statement championships that combination helped him win active call state honors shock and he's also the state middle award leader for the tennis state championships two-time first place scholarships this is crazy two-time first place we started betty brown awards instrumental excellence in piano and played in many piano awards also

011he plans to study chemistry at yale or brown now i think that what captures i think matthew's essence even beyond all these books i haven't gotten those services it'll list those pages but this is the quote that was in the republic at the end of tennessee i wouldn't say that i wouldn't say a feedback validator is my main goal my main goal academically was to go to school and have fun learning i think the most this valuatory stuff came as a result of me just being joined what i'm doing in school as much as me earning this recognition as part of the governor's step team of mathematics i would say it's not only me who deserves it i also think that there are many other people out there who also have been impactful for my

012life because i couldn't have done this without their help and especially the bcsc the corporation even before they gave me the opportunities for academics there were people through elementary school middle school even high school really taught me how to really enjoy what i learned and really pursue something beyond it was to try to make me a better version of myself and not only just academics but also extracurriculars whether it be in sports or also music additionally i would also like to recognize my mom and my dad i love you guys so much even though there's some place where it might be very annoying to you i really appreciate you guys for always sticking with me from day one so i love you guys so much thank you so much and also i would like to

013recognize all the friends or even like past whether they're in college right now or whether they're still in school they really are shaped who i really am they really encourage me in some aspects we're always there during some of my lowest moments and i think that i wouldn't have been able to do what i've been able to do if it weren't for all my friends family and faculty so as much as today is like one day to recognize this achievement i also think that these people also deserve recognition as well thank you yes congratulations matthew outstanding uh school career we now have the south side elementary safety is coming in so turn things over well thank you very much for having us we appreciate the opportunity to share our young students accomplishments so i just

014want to say congratulations to csa lincoln you'll see them next but i will uh stop talking and give it to our coach randy kiel who i appreciate her time and efforts thank you mr brockminer and thank you again to the board for inviting us to be here this evening i want to give a quick shout out to some folks at south side we hosted the first in-person elementary academic competition since 2019 so kudos to our fantastic custodians the wonderful group of teachers who helped things around smoothly that evening our tight crew the wonderful children who helped set up a lot of holding chairs right and mr roger for supporting us that evening when mr grimes reached out to me a few weeks ago to ask what transpired that evening and spoke at the board meeting

015he used the new bcsc tagline together we learned and this was a geometry focus year for us so together we learned an awful lot of geometry right together we learned things like how to use the pythagorean theorem together we learned how to find the sum of the interior angles of any regular polygon regardless of how many signs it has together we learn how to solve multi-step problems in either 30 45 or 60 seconds that's the max amount of time for any given problem together we learn also how to stay calm in kind of a pressure situation and honestly kudos to all of the children who participated in the mouthful that evening and all of the parents and coaches who supported them if you've never been to an elementary magical competition it can be quite intense

016these children achieved a near-perfect score by answering 31 of 32 questions correctly which is really a remarkable achievement and when we got together last friday to celebrate our end of season together and played some games and had some cake i asked them to also jot down on a note card what they were taking away from their overall magical experience and what i found out is together we also learned that math can be fun and exciting together we learn how to stay positive and support one another together we learn how to really collaborate and come together as a team and so i'd like to introduce the team members to you matt stays when i say your name if you could please raise your hand we have a couple of students who couldn't be here so in

020the patience of our entire age adults in the room for allowing us to celebrate the great accomplishments of our kids on that note we are going to now recognize our retirees dr clique good evening at this time we will start by viewing the screens in the room to display the video that mr burnett put together to recognize our retirees so [Music] do [Music] do [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] thank you together we learned tonight how to celebrate and recognize some great amazing students and teachers and support staff members and administrators um really didn't seem like that along the list until watch the video we do we are going to recognize 45 employees that will be retiring 13 certified and 32 support staff members and these retirements could have taken

021any place the beginning of the school year to this point so um but with that what we're going to do is just when we saw the students up here matthew the bowl team all of us it's all possible because of the great staff that we have we all come together together to learn and together to meet the needs of all of our students so at this time i'm going to call up not all good attend but i feel like i want to recognize that still announced their day so i'll be announcing their name in the years of service to bcsc so when i call your name you come up here and we will line up and get recognized by the board and at the very end you've learned the pattern now their bibles stand up

024a total of those 13 413 years 13 years of service the average years for each level 31.8 years of service remarkable our support staff 32 of them there are total years together 679 and a half years average years 21.2 years of service so all together these amazing people and the ones who couldn't make it tonight they have served our students and helped make csc the choice to learn work and play for 1093 years so at this time if we can please congratulate them okay um smarter yes foreign okay agenda is clicky creek elementary school right well thank you and we've done a great job of clearing out the room so excited so many people are here to see our presentation but no we are very excited uh my name is michael larson i have a

025unique opportunity and privilege to serve as the principal of clinton creek elementary school which is also the home of legato spanish immersion academy so we're really excited to be here and before we kind of get in and go through what we like to present and show you today i feel like it's also i believe this is the last school board meeting with students stolen and i feel like this has been phenomenal we have been in school and i know that has a lot to do with the people sitting here in these chairs and just from my heart and from our school corporation thank you for what you've done it has been a wonderful school year with our kids this year and we get to present to you all today because we have our kids all

026year and so kudos to each one of you and thank you for your service it really does matter so we thought our way through our process of what would we like to share about what we do at clip decree because there's such a small part right you get to hear a small part of what we do over 180 days there's so much the one thing we started this process was we love the arts by clifton creek and what we want to speak specifically about today is music and art and how it impacts and drives our school in so many different ways we know that the research behind it from academic achievement through cultural responsibility from the social emotional positivity of embracing it into the school but also bringing equity into students that may not always

027have the opportunity to have a guitar host to give a really high class painting experience and these are such great examples that we've been able to give our students not only this year but we've been doing it for many years um after dr pleacon here for the shout out has hired two of the finest teachers that you will hear from today that are just outstanding um but one thing that i've realized is art and music is about play and one of the things that excited me about bcs is we adopt a division of learn work play the two work and play because as my daughter started playing the piano i realized you don't work the piano right you don't go saying go work the piano what do you say go play the piano because play

028and it's our art in its playful form is supposed to play we want to do that and so far uh at clifton what we're trying to do is stop that bridge that seems to be merging play and work and separate the two because they activate two completely different sides of the brain inside a child and we feel really passionate that we want to activate both that left side and that right side and you can only activate both sides by yes the academic work but also the play inside of the school building and what we do with our music and our art and examples i can give is think about dancing i don't know if you like to dance but when you go on a dance floor and you're with your spouse or whoever your partner

029or whoever you're dancing with you don't sit there and say okay when the music is done we're going to stop right there that's where we need to stop at our dance no because that's silly the part the best part of the dance is to dance and we don't have an end in mind in everything we do in music we use our skill sets to allow our students to activate that left and that right side of the frame so they can enjoy what they do and so the presentation you're going to hear today i hope it also takes you back to some of your playful times when music and art really change your life because as we get older and as we become adults we forget that when the music is supposed to be played we're

030supposed to sing and we're supposed to dance we're not supposed to study the song we're not supposed to analyze the lyrics we're supposed to enjoy the process enjoy the movement because we each have heard a song that has moved us in ways and today you're gonna have an opportunity or this evening an opportunity to hear from two of the finest uh teachers we have how they embrace the arts at clifton creek so we're gonna invite first up our music teacher uh this is kyla liver well first i would like to we'll thank dr jennifer and also i think dr parsons and kelly for giving both vanessa and me the opportunity to talk about our programs it's so frequent that the arts get crushed under the rug so to be able to highlight what we're doing

031is really an amazing opportunity so um we've done a few different things at clifty creek it um arose out of the need to change a few things because of copen and um and also from just listening to what my students wanted when i first started teaching this kids kept asking me why can't we learn how to play the drum center why can't we learn how to play the guitar and so i started listening to them and we now have a full-on rock band at clifty creek and the students are learning how to play guitar and they're learning how to play electric bass and along with strings i mean our music program is thriving because i because of our students and because we have the support to be able to get them the things that they

032need let me make sure i'm holding this directly so this is the music room um because through donations i've done donor's choose we were able to get quite a few things and then through the budget that i had through my school we've been able to outfit our classroom with just an incredible offering of instruments for our students uh our program like i said the main goal of my program of this program is that it is student-centered every student that comes into my room i want them to know that this is their program music is for everyone it is not for the gifted and talented i mean i i truly do not believe that i am quite an average musician myself and as a when i first got started as an educator i saw that as

033my biggest downfall but it is i have learned that it is my greatest strength that i am no better than any of my students that walk in i just had more experience and so with that we learn and then we explore together i did not know how to play rock band instruments until this summer i took a bunch of pd and i could play the guitar and over the summer i learned how to play drums and bass guitar so our end goal well it says our engagement we decided to do a battle of the bands and there was no intent initially on doing a battle of a band we started out writing songs and the students decided that they wanted to have a competition and so we got this incredible man to come in and

034uh dress up as freddie mercury see if i can find it here i'm gonna just bump ahead where did he go oh there he is so we had a freddie mercury impersonator come in he was incredible singing and playing i mean this was our battle of the bands it was a riot and our students just had a ball um and i mean it was the first time i think it's going to be a pattern i'm going to scroll back now i just wanted to make sure that i got that uh i'm gonna i'm gonna i don't think i like five minutes but why am i teaching modern dance um student choice uh it's an opportunity for students to improvise every class from grades two through six this year wrote their own original song and just

035released their album today so you can find that by going to clifty creek music on facebook and you can listen to all of their songs they wrote those songs they improvised the melodies and so the songs are their lyrics their melodies and it's all i mean it is it is there i mean when you read the lyrics you'll know if they are not high lyrics they are definitely the student lyrics uh the great thing one of the many great things about doing modern man is all of these different opportunities it's culturally responsive i think for too long we've had this huge emphasis on western classical music and i mean i was raised i i did opera as an undergrad and there was this uh view that western classical music is the pinnacle of music but

036rock and roll is american i mean it's it's come out of our own country in jazz and when we ignore those that music we're denying the music that they've grown up to they've grown up with and they've listened to and the other thing is that my older students are astounding so much more because we are talking about the music that they love and that speaks to them and they're learning how to write their own music um this i want to talk really quickly about this student right here this is a kid who no one would have ever expected to get in front of the entire 600 700 people and she wrote the melody of the song that her classmates say and she wanted to be the one to sing it and she did that girl

037got up in front and she just nailed it just beautiful job i mean this is a girl that for years would come to my room and um just would be so overwhelmed with the sound that she would have to leave and she was soloing up in front of a rock band so it's been an incredible opportunity for growth for me as an educator and for our students um i don't think i have much time to go on this more but um feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about what we do and i'm gonna pass the mic over to vanessa so she can tell you about art there you go that's the right way she's pretty amazing [Music] this was our amazing rocket show i had [Music] this is actually

038a project that was in collaboration with the fifth grade teachers to bring some color to our corridor so one thing that the main thing i'm going to talk about tonight is how to embrace the culture of our building and how color and art can change an environment and change sort of the climate or create a welcoming atmosphere for kids so these are just some of the projects that we've done some of them are adult-based so the ones on the left are the large mural that my husband actually painted so this sort of started with a project with dr fleet in the cafeteria um she commissioned my husband to do um our school motto which is be respectfully responsible for your personal best and then when dr carson came on and the legato program came into

039play we wanted to find a way or he wanted to find a way to sort of merge the two programs together so our traditional classroom plus our new spanish speaking classrooms and a way to make it a welcoming environment for all of those children and all of those families and so we came up with the idea of sort of taking what was already there in the cafeteria and bringing in the cougar which is painted like an allergy which is a spirit animal from latin america one thing you'll notice is lots of color when working in clifty it's very white and that was something that the architect had in mind so i wanted to keep that i do keep that in mind as we're creating things um the architect wanted to showcase the colorfulness of the

040children and so i think that's important so that's kind of what i'm going to talk about um we've done some eyes fly boxes these are paintings that the kids have done with help for me this is a welcome sign that we've done and we've also this is the back side of the piece um just the benefits of our education before we get to the fun part i guess um students who participate in the arts not just visual arts but vrs like music and other fine arts they have improved academic support performance they are more likely to graduate from high school they're more likely to be recognized for their academic achievement and attendance awards it really gives them a reason to come to school um we have a lot of kids that maybe struggle in other

041parts of academics but in our in the special classroom like she's saying some of the students can always shine and one interesting fact is that 72 percent of business leaders say that creativity is the number one skill they're looking for so as we create 21st century workforce it's important that they have those creative skills and there we just have some kiddos working on some art some color vomiting and some building and crafting and things like that um there's also developmental benefits of art education just starting out small letting kids play talk about work and play they don't realize they're working when they're playing i talk to the kids a lot about that they can develop math concepts language development motor skills self-esteem is a big thing being able to see themselves and artists that we're

042looking at being able to invent new things um visual learning if i would let's just these are the main things that i try to do to promote a positive environment for the kids so it's important to me to teach the students about art and artists from a variety of cultures and backgrounds so that they can see themselves as creators so we do have a diverse population at clifty and it's important for me as the art teacher and our other teachers to embrace that and to showcase art and other things like rock and roll that the students can relate to so that they can really be engaged in what we're doing another thing that i like to focus on is collaboration and cooperation when working on large art projects we just did a mural this week

043with sixth grade um sometimes kids can focus on their own individual work but it's really important that they learn to collaborate and cooperate with one another and that also gives some of those kids that maybe aren't quite so sure about their art skills that they can feel successful after we did this painting this week a lot of the kids that maybe weren't normally pumped up about their work really we're proud of the wall and then another thing that i try to do is which i'll focus on in the next couple of slides is to make sure that we're showcasing that work when the students be proud of the work they're doing and i want them to see that i'm proud as well so these are some projects we've done so this one is about creating

044a welcoming environment um it's really important 850 when you walk in you'll notice the pop of color that's there and i believe that that's really important that really makes it sort of fun engaging um the kids are excited i think the adults are excited i think that's one of the things that art can do and so that's really what we've kind of focused on so this is our entryway here and this is actually something that dr carson has done well the creed which i love okay and then again the fence post bringing the kids artwork here we're just working together and then those large paintings the students did um those hanging libraries so there's also another cover another thing that was a project i took on was to do this peaceful so um it is

045in the four languages that our girl was in so it is in spanish hindi um english one of the things when we were merging the legato program in our traditional classroom was to bring that black american color it really plays well with the white um this is where we do collaborative learning so it's important that we work together create together and learn together make everyone feel comfortable together so that's one of the main programs or one of the main things of my program is to make sure that kids feel comfortable working together so sometimes we're doing lego builds where they're working together sometimes we're working on a large project where it's more learning to cooperate together sometimes we're just peeling crayons and melting new crayons and learning that and then when we showcase the work

046displaying the work makes the kids feel proud of themselves and so all of this is work that is either hanging in the building or um individually and then they've shown or talked about with one another again we do learn about other cultures this is a project to send to sometimes we're just putting some color up there and having some fun so again working playing learning to work and play together and to accept and love one another through the arts sorry next [Laughter] and in closing i could say a thousand wonderful things about our special team these teachers work every single day super super hard um they are proud of their kids it shows in their classrooms but i argue that you could say that about any one of our classrooms at flipping creek and legato

047i encourage you guys to come our school is amazing to walk through it's colorful it's bright it's engaging and i really truly believe all of our teachers embrace the whole child um teaching she's a whole child um because of the importance that that is um embracing music and art at clifty is evident but i i would say that that's evident in all of our classrooms as well do you have any questions the teachers have touched on a little bit but i'm wondering if you could focus for just a couple of sentences on the some of the differences that i might see in the musical arts and visualize programming because we do have the spanish immersion there are some differences but i'm going to actually invite mrs l to come up and speak about that um

048in my program i have i am not a fluent spanish speaker but i have worked really hard talking with the legato teachers and i collect songs and so one of the things that i've done with them is i've collected some of the songs from their cultures i have a lot of books in spanish so with our legato classes as well as our traditional classes i do teach a lot of songs from latin america we also do different things on latin american um holidays and things dia de los marcos talk about the color arts and crafts from there i do try to use spanish and english with all the kids when i'm discussing color and things like that so that as a building it's not these kids go to this school when these kids go to

049the school but so that we're all one family that's what the art is for that's kind of what the music program's for that's what we're trying to do is to bring everyone together and so i'm not looking at them as two separate things but embracing what those have to offer thank you any other questions that's quite an impressive room is there like an instrument of choice is is that those tall drums look really different they aren't very alluring especially with the characters so um i'll just use my voice it's loud um i the students are actually allowed to pick their instrument so i teach them all how to play guitar will focus but then i have students that really like playing on keyboard and i didn't mention this but all of the instruments are color

050coded and i actually brought a guitar if you want to look at it and ukulele and they're all coded they're all color coded with also the letter sign because i learned my first year that there are students with uh that are colorblind so they have the color of the chord so like the g chord is all blue but it also has the letter g and the g the g is also blue on the piano so everything is matched so it's really easy for them to go from guitar to bass to piano i just i have i make youtube videos where they play along and they just follow along with the color code i will say it's very difficult to go into a room and not touch it but i just want to thank you for

051not ignoring music there's research has been out for years many years honestly about the student success and art music and the fine arts so thanks so much for incorporating that into your program i visited 50 creek and i remember now you so much thank you so much [Music] so i think i said this last meeting that i'll go ahead and say it again i i really do believe that um you know in light of the celebrations tonight i really do believe that there are very few other corporations in the state that have as many celebrations and great news to report about student council accomplishments as there are in bcsc and so you know the ones that we mentioned at the board meetings and the ones you see in the newspapers and so forth i sincerely

052believe that those only scratch the surface and there are lots and lots of success stories going on on a daily basis we don't hear anything about um i have three to continue with uh to dovetail off of the success of southside and lincoln for mr payne at central the central academic teams april 30th competed in bloomington and at the regional level central place first in math english social studies interdisciplinary they were third and the math team is state champs at central english social studies both placed in the top ten and thanks to mr ping for sharing that information and beth flemion the math coach in the summer's english coach carly udy social studies coach and vanessa mayaha science coach another bit of academic news the fine arts team at columbus east just on saturday competed

053in the academic bowl competition at purdue and so congratulations to mr lewis in his last year uh i know he might be slightly disappointed but the fine arts team second in the state one point behind the state the state champs members student members of the east fine arts team zoe barnes father lo craft lisa jesus ken smith neal smith and madison valentine and the last one i'll share some news from autumn streetville uh more good news from c4 [Music] autumn street the c4 business partner uh liaison a little bit about career week the last week of april in c4 mrs street shared that over 20 businesses community volunteers helped with career week of which this was a first lots of connections were made between students and community partners many have already applied others are currently

054waiting on tours and internships from businesses several seniors plan to apply for jobs at columbus regional this summer classes during the week c4 classes during the week focused on resume interview work ethic skills throughout the week and mrs trible shared that certainly this event will happen again next year with plans to grow the career week and uh she also shared that there's been a lot of positive stupid uh feedback that the interviews and workshops very beneficial particularly the financial literacy workshops which arguably is one of the areas where you know the adulting 101 skills that sometimes get left out were worked on during that week i would like to share that uh two weeks ago both north and east unified track teams participated in their uh it's called indiana conference uh columbus east received fifth

055place at the hoocher hills and columbus north also uh placed fifth at flemington north at the indiana conference this past week uh north and east 10th dual meet where columbus north east but uh the athletes have actually all the efforts did a very good job one comment that i'll share is that brian north where the coach is a first year coach she was probably particularly proud the fact that they you know they may have gotten fifth at conference but they're a small team and uh having smarter set was [Music] she was most proud that the kids had a great time they can't wait till next year the other thing was that uh majority of the uh north athletes uh received their pr so they were very excited about being faster and jumping longer and shot

056putting further than they have in practice so uh they all both teams north and east will be traveling to wilmington north this coming weekend where it's sectionals and uh wish both teams want to represent bcsc there and i think both teams will do very well and give all the other kids that are in our sectionals thank you meeting it would be on the uh we would be crossing into a territory that i don't want to go to and that would be based off the opinion of our attorney general tom keita and indiana code 20-30 and you know all i'm asking a short comment if you could allow that or if anybody could motion to them allow that i would beg you to do that our policy stands adoption of social studies on there so i

057don't believe that it would fit perhaps under that category but uh ricky was on here again and i think you begin to go down a tough path if every time curriculum is a topic the topic was breaking that i wish to speak on tonight yes right yeah so i would refer you guys to the second amendment of how his parents killed rice for specifically he cites birthday to allow parents to speak at curriculum uh public meetings that are publicly addressed prior to that this is the only forum i have to do that so i just would like i think you have stated the current policy accurately and it does include the restriction that public comments limited and that is the policy that is in place today [Music] facilities just real quickly here at the school

058foundation uh the school foundation continues to be it's a very busy time of year for them successful event uh last saturday april 30th for the good better best out of the box award at 5k held at south side uh very positive event good turnout um let's see oh nicole cunningham the foundation's executive director may 13th and may 18th will be traveling to to the high schools to deliver student scholarships um and then also would like to say the partnership with donorschoose continues to be successful thus far in 2020 two 52 projects have been funded through the partnership with dylan streets one of which you saw tonight music program at clifty uh which is a direct uh you know directly benefits from that program and so i believe that's it mr dyers all right now move

059on to cabinet reports okay thank you mr uh so we have the referendum metrics uh to share with you so as i go through these slides we'll be talking about metrics that we had set up prior to actually having the community public vote on the referendum and we believe it's appropriate to hold ourselves accountable to that given the tax dollars that are being invested in making these improvements and these changes specific tax dollars so i'm going to run through these but certainly rely on my fellow cabinet members to help out if we have questions as we go through each of these slides so just a background back on june 2nd of 2020 a couple of years ago now amazing the times went that quickly 61.3 percent of our voters approved a 15.6 increase in the

060school property tax rate uh published revenues and expenditure budget budgets they've been trying to give you we plan to give you totally board updates that's what this is um and then we provide annual updates for our website uh where the recreative goals and targets are situated in gcses.org one of the goals uh was in regard to teacher retention and it was specifically to increase the percent of teaching staff retained each year the goal for for the current state in 2019 20 got into that referendum was 87 percent uh our target for 2122 was 89 in our actual given where we are at least today and going through the retirees um that was just a reason somebody might um not stay with us but investigations try to at least make sure that 90 of our staff

061are returning to their positions with teacher retention um that may include people perhaps being a promotion for the account of that position uh or retirement as i mentioned we did have a deceased individual and then we had 45 resignations of those resignations the top three reasons were receiving a certified position elsewhere and either as an administrator or teaching relocation or career change so those are the top reasons i had a person from the teaching position another goal was in regards to mental health and specific to mental health providers it was to increase the number of mental health providers in each of our secondary school sites in order to serve more students in 1920 we had seven mental health providers so we had set a target 10 for 21 22 and we actually got a lot

062of work done ended up with 32 we'll maintain that same target of 32 and 20 to 23. uh there'll be there's a shortage of mental health providers and we're trying to seek additional funding though to help out with that this particular slide shows the additions that we had made under uh other things we knew were affecting our students and those highlighted ones are additional positions and as a part of that summer in regards to those mental health health services we have a large increase in the total number of students receiving services that 592 members decided there is the 2020 2021 school year the entire year actually comes from an evaluation we did at the semester so that number is going to be into the thousands over a thousand now [Music] so 592 over two semesters

063913 get a semester some challenges for our kids social emotional learning was something that was addressed in the referendum and we're looking at developmental assets of our kids and increasing the percentage of teachers trained in developmental assets and or social emotional learning six percent of our staff in 1920 our goal for 2122 our target was 16 we actually are 34 or over a third and we'll raise we'll move that up a 10 in terms of the percentage goal for 22.23 to 40 percent um with just a couple of extra notes in terms of the social media learning we have provided quarterly resources to enhance found skills of all our stakeholders and families that increase participation by teachers administrators and our teachers assistants in toronto the transportation side of things this was also likely broadcast in

064terms of reasons that we were looking for a referendum success with running a referendum and that was to reduce the number of buses that are greater than 12 years old so having buses on the roads that'd be more efficient and appropriate in terms of being safe supporting our kids in 1920 we had 41 buses more than 12 years old we hope to reduce that to 32 4 21 222 we were able to accomplish that target our target for 22.23 as we pump that down again and take nine more buses off the road that are 12 years old or older it goes down to 23. it's clear plus driver positions is a challenge for us as well um a lot of challenges in terms of staffing with mental health providers bus drivers at least in regards

065to the referendum here our goal is to decrease the number of driver rods unfilled or had to be filled on a regular basis by sub drivers 12 percent of our routes were unfilled or had subs taken care of in 1920 we hoped to reduce that to eight percent 21.22 we'd actually get that down to six percent so cut in half we had a goal to have 100 of our elementary students attending the weekly stem lab or or for engaging stem opportunities that was less than 75 and 21-22 most of our elementary schools did have a stem lab but uh if those we had a couple were not able to fill that position and or it was not on a routine basis so less than 75 percent of our students 22 23 that's our target 100

066getting back to that goal and we'll see what that ends up being for that year and then we'll take that we'll billboard that we're hiring certified teachers to pull those ten positions and you're all well aware of that for the 20 to 23 school years addressed and taken care of so that on a regular basis all kids elementary will be attending certified teachers there was a connection with the c4 department that's been strengthened by things such as parole and our step kid we have not had a chance to attend either of those look at the calendar pay attention to the county where we can advertise for those and try to get yourself out there we also have a connection with columbus because of an airport providing your non-exploring opportunities community and um classroom activities that

067do include coding and engineering are being introduced i'll have an update on all this information on our bcsc website at fpcschools.org you can see what the reference looks like down at the bottom uh are gives information about the referendum budget uh the referendum for false goals and targets that were covered here and the referendum taxed impact calculator uh that was eight years when we were running sure people knew how much 15.66 is going to cost some other taxes that covers the um update that we want to provide to you in terms of the reference metrics i would ask if there's any additions or clarifications yeah i've got one in regards to i think i remember seeing 45 resignations that was how many um retirements we had tonight the number of you have any sense or

068any idea how that compares to pre uh pre-referendum in terms of percentage staff if that question makes sense i'm not certain um i think before we would be around maybe in the high but i can tell you the year prior um for the 21-22 school years of the 1920 we had instead of favorite retirements again 21 retirements um and instead of 45 nations we had 48 presentations so we had more retirements during that year so hopefully the impact of record and illness allow some people to do of making this comparison um that we may have people staying a little longer instead of retiring given the month of the referendum and how that contributes to the teaching pitch um there is a win there with one of the today let's make more of that situation in

069terms of the percentage of mr drax um i said as soon as i came to the system we started looking at various targets and measures with the strategic plan in place before this one teacher retention was on that and as dr click said that high aids was typically where we were so we had a target 90 percent then target rate in 1920 was 87 percent bumped that back up to 89 so that that percentage for about 21.22 is probably the highest we've had and i've got one more question so you know the mental health statistics up there pretty alarming in regards to students and i noticed the number three resignation uh reason leaving the profession would you happen to have any sense or idea how many of those leaving the profession are related to mental

070health concerns i would not instead of a career change questions nine items in front of you this evening that starts with the basics of business from the last four meeting on april 25th something little contracts that are in front of these field trips and professional leaves that we have school fundraisers as well as claims in payroll we have two sets of claims apparel there one from data may ninth which is a little over a million dollars one million dollars for april first april 30th that's a little over three million dollars and then we also have our payroll display uh in front of you this time it covers the work days of april 9th april 22nd it is no additions to that so that's a little over 3.2 million additionally we have the policy revision to

071number 4434 that is in regard to the holidays for full-time staff 12 months staff for us then the edition of juneteenth as a holiday we also have the internal complaint policy that was revised to more fit internal situations or circumstances uh from an employee's standpoint versus the more generic complaint policy that we had so the internal late policy has an addition that have been placed in front of you and then we also have a resolution for professional development flexibility waiver put that out that is the third time it's actually asked to potentially do this based upon a bill that was in place just a few years ago legislation that allows corporations to request a waiver based upon various flexible items ours is time so we're going to investigate waiver from the state board of education

072and we use time differently instead of days we count them in hours that allows us to have this full day professional development days those days are on the calendar already for next year to first semester to second semester let's take more vegetation let's have to through that waiver that we are increases specifically for high school courses as far as my [Music] so okay all right we'll try this again i request approval to human resource recommendations as presented this evening our recommendations okay [Music] okay all right i appreciate that with these presentations tonight i like the color you know kind of white i understand uh the full architecture of p7 but i also think color tends to as well and also what a great night with stem and governor's awards and retirees may they all have

073a healthy and long life adventure ahead of them thank you yeah congratulations again to the south side lincoln math state champs matthew liu on his almost uncountable accomplishments um congratulations to mrs thompson on her well-deserved recognition into the circle of deported and dr parsons and the clifty clifty creek team excuse me um yeah it's it's very refreshing to see an emphasis on music at art and i think often times those are two of the areas that are oftentimes underappreciated and valued and kind of put on the back burner times but uh it's it's great to see what they're doing with those programs and then congratulations again to the 45 retirees of nearly 1100 years of service yeah very uh yeah that's great thank you also um i'd like to thank my fellow board members for

074their support tonight okay i have a checklist on a list person i went through my checklist stuff reverses i'd like to apologize i got so um worried about my check marks i didn't thank you all and thank you for your presentation today and i just like say today it was a hurtful kind of agenda guys upcoming dates next school board meeting is on june 13th at 6 30 p.m right here [Music]
