002this week on tuesday and last night we had the crosstown showdown and wrestling congratulations to the columbus east wrestling team as they had a big win over their crosstown rival the columbus north bulldogs and we are set for action here tonight for girls basketball and to finish the sh the rivalry will be uh live at columbus east and the gym over there in the orange pit for men's basketball with jv and varsity the fans are slowly but surely filling up here as last year we did not have that many fans so i'm anxious to see how many fans we will have here tonight at columbus north and i wonder if the home court's advantage will be playing a factory at all in any of these games here tonight as well [Music] according to max preps
003north's jv basketball team is their record is 9-1 and max preps is not up to date with the columbus east jv basketball team but i know they were victorious in their last game as they were facing jeffersonville and once again we will be streaming both games here tonight jv tip off is at six and varsity will follow approximately at 7 30 so sit back and relax and watch some good basketball here tonight both games should be a good one we are about four minutes away here from the tip-off for the jv game and we will take a short break and be back shortly so just welcome back to the live stream here as you can see on your screen the columbus east olympians women's jv basketball team is warming up on their respected ends there
004is no freshman game at the girls level it looks like east does not have enough numbers to participate with a freshman team so this is our first action here at columbus north high school this evening two minutes still tip off and i don't know about you all but i'm very excited to be able to call this game and bring it to you if you were the ones watching at home and not able to make it and then you can see the columbus north cheerleaders dancing to their school's fight song [Music] and there your columbus north bulldogs basketball team making their way to the bench that's a good sign for all of us fans it's getting closer till tip-off here at columbus north high school [Music] and the clock is ticking under a minute to go
005and just the feel for having fans back in a big rivalry game like this is there's nothing like it that something columbus is very grateful for is both high schools and the crosstown rivalry it brings to the town a lot of support and there's nothing like it as a former columbus east football player that crosstown showdown against the bulldogs something you look forward to every year gives you motivation in the off season so we should have a good one here tonight and the buzzer will be going off here soon and we should be ready for tip off [Music] uh [Music] [Applause] servers [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] foreign [Applause] foreign [Applause] so there we have it ladies and gentlemen our starting lineups for each team here tonight fans are on their feet coaches cheerleaders and everybody's
006ready to go here at columbus north high school seven minutes is on the clock and we are seconds away from tip-off [Music] and the olympians win that's it see if the olympians can attack first she looks like north's in a 2-3 zone to start out the jv game attacks puts up the floater no good and rebounded by the bulldogs so the first shot for the olympians is up and no good and looks like the olympians will be doing the same here on defense and it is a turnover by the bulldogs and olympians will be looking to get on the board here first once again and the ball went out of bounds will be east basketball as they get it inbounds here and tipped out remains east basketball gets it down low on the low block

027i see on my end a lot of orange and a lot of blue and i don't know about you all but i'm very excited to see that here at columbus north as my senior year last year was cut short due to that crazy thing called covid but now as we got a year through it and got a little bit somewhat under control with vaccines masks and everything we are able to have a full capacity here tonight and i know each of these players are very grateful and looking forward to the experience it's something they will always remember as i'm a freshman now in college and i still remember the high school days whether it was playing or in the student section just having that feel of the rivalry game is something they will forever remember
028looks like north student section is christmas as they have their student section quite full if i can pan the camera over to their section there as you see the north is christmas and east on the far end right across from the their basket there they don't have quite as many people but i asked a few of my friends that are still in high school and they said it's kitchenette uh where and that their theme is cooking up a dub so cooking up a win so some creative themes there and once again it is the northeast rivalry week and tuesday evening we had swimming at columbus east and our girls swimming team for columbus to use the one with a close finish there and our very own columbus north bulldogs boys swimming team won tuesday evening
029and last night i was very grateful and humbled to be able to bring you guys the wrestling live stream as the columbus east olympians picked up their big win in the crosstown showdown and here tonight your columbus north bulldogs jv basketball team is up on top over the visitors the columbus east olympians we are about two minutes and 15 seconds away here and that first half was a doozy east got off to a good start and north came back and closed out the first half on a big run and took an 18-12 lead north really picked up their defensive pressure and east just couldn't have an answer offensively they scored one bucket in that second quarter so i'm sure halftime adjustments have been made from each team and they are looking forward to come out
030and get the hard-fought win as it takes to win in this crosstown rivalry once again there is no freshman game east does not have a girls freshman team but north is playing a decent amount of freshman here in this jv game so as a coach i'm sure you're looking forward so that's having your freshman play up on jv get the experience early and hopefully it transitions over to varsity north has a few extra players on their jv team compared to east i wonder fatigue or tiredness will play a part in the second half we shall see we're underneath in minutes here and we should i'll start this second half and we should have a good one on our hands if it's anything like the first half once again after this we will also be streaming

056blow that up a little bit so i can actually see their names good evening from memorial gym in columbus indiana hosts columbus north high school for the first time that we've been together here in this gym for a girls contest for a couple years it's good to be hosting a big event here at columbus north and good to have stands full of fans i'm brett bozeman joined by nick williams and dr jim roberts nick it's happy to happy to have you here next to me again uh we've done this with football and this will be our first basketball go around so welcome nick and tell tell me a little bit about what you expect to see tonight all right again like brett said it is great to be back in memorial gym watching the girls
057they weren't able to play last year like brett said so it is good to see the crowd the atmosphere some of these girls haven't been in this type of atmosphere ever really so they have the trophy on the check-in box so everybody's gonna walk past that and see it but we have two very talented teams tonight and we're looking for a great matchup east comes in tonight at a 10-2 record coach danny brown is in his 19th season uh and they get up and down the court they'll press they'll trap in the half court and they are averaging uh almost 64 points per game while only giving up 47. north on the other hand is under first head first year head coach brett white although he's been with the program for many years they're 7-3
058and also coming in with some tough-minded defense they'll play man-to-man a lot and they're averaging around giving up around 40 points and averaging 52.8 so brett i think what we'll all expect tonight is to see north and east studs see how they react in this environment with barker and lawson for north and grivey and stall for east see how those role players come out and perform but i'm looking for a great matchup tonight yeah it'll definitely be interesting to see how as you mentioned neither group has uh aside from just a handful of players corrine being one and and kyla being another who have experience in this game from a couple years ago uh most as you said do not so we'll have to see it'll be interesting that first quarter uh jitters probably the
059biggest crowd that that uh either team has played in front of this year maybe last year combined with with cobit protocols in place in most gyms so we'll have to see how uh how they react uh you're right with the with the uh the four four girls that you mentioned uh they are the leading scorers of both teams it'll be interesting to see who produces but from my perspective maybe more interesting to see how how they're defended who matches up against whom and what the strategy is for both both coaching staffs entering this contest absolutely east will bring in a lot of height which you will see right off the bat compared to this north team so north has a lot of really skilled guards and again if if east comes out and does their
060uh full court press and is trapping it'll be interesting to see who wins that turnover game because both coaches probably aren't happy with the amount of turnovers each uh team has had throughout the year i'm curious on on how again the pressure the atmosphere affects a lot of these girls who haven't been in in this environment so brett i know that you are very close with all these players um i'm gonna have you start by just kind of talking about that east roster with us and then we'll move on to north and kind of give us a preview of the players that we're going to see tonight yeah absolutely both both teams full of good coaching and really great kids so i'm excited to be able to talk about them here a little bit tonight
061east is led by karine garivey of course she's the senior averaging nearly 16 a game um corrin's she's an athlete she has been an athlete for a while she's a two-time republic um player of the year and girls basketball in the city um she's all things run through her and they have for a while for this east team so we expect her to to uh to play well albany spear number three senior for for east former rock creek bulldog she she can shoot the lights out if she's given the opportunity matter of fact she had four threes in a row from the same spot within about five minutes on saturday afternoon at the orange pit so she can be dangerous as well sage stahl she's averaging as well as corinne nearly 16 a game sage
062sage keeps getting better the more she plays she's a six-footer she plays like she's 6'4 she's everywhere on the floor she's got good ball handling skills and and as i mentioned she she's a good athlete and good volleyball player and she just seems to keep getting uh better and and lastly mentioned leah bachmann she's a junior player who also is progressing and doing well she's playing more on the perimeter mainly because harley gant being in the center playing at the post and sage stahl playing so well at the post also for east and danny's put the uh put leah out on the perimeter a little bit and she does a good job handing the ball it doesn't get uh doesn't get frazzled at all and and she has a good jump shot for uh for
063a post type body so a lot of athletes on this east team and we'll see how they how they respond here on the road across town and as brett is talking through the talent that's on the east roster it goes without saying that columbus north girls programs both schools have had we've had over 12 all-state girl athletes throughout the years both schools have been to the state finals north winning it with allie patberg at the lead the tradition of columbus north and columbus east girls basketball is well known across the state and it's again a special treat to have two really good teams be playing tonight so brett as we move to that north roster what are we expecting from them north will start three seniors and two juniors today uh emma long unfortunately a
064starting point guard junior for the dogs has a broken elbow and has been out for a few weeks unfortunately she has to miss this one uh that that hurts the dogs but they have others that step up leading columbus north is senior number 11 kyla lawson she's been a three-year starter for columbus north she's she has ability to play at the next level she's everywhere on the floor she uh averages about 13 points a game and she averages more than seven rebounds a game so um good jump shot she's hitting several three-pointers this year as well also a scoring threat most things run through number three lauren barker especially with emma long being out lauren's averaging um also about 14 points a game and she actually holds the single game school record for made three
065pointers in a game early last season as a sophomore so it'll be interesting to see how how east defends uh those two um if they can get andrea justus going on the post she can add as a threat um as well um kayla jones number 21 she's a newcomer to north high school came over from columbus christian she actually scored 17 quiet points i'd say on tuesday against seymour and she she plays similar to kyla that she's just everywhere i think she had 95 rebounds it seemed like on tuesday but a very athletic kid and and giving north a boost here uh with a couple injuries so yeah so we'll see how well they match up together but a lot of good talent both ways we got about two minutes here before we uh before
066we tip uh as i mentioned we we are joined by dr jim roberts so dr roberts thanks for jumping in here with us any uh pregame thoughts that you want to share with the listeners uh dr bozeman mr williams great to be with you tonight i'm looking forward to this game it's been two years since i've been able to see a game like this north versus east and as you've been talking just two outstanding programs teams and uh really excited to see how they how they play tonight yeah we certainly agree and thanks for thanks for being here we uh we'll have we'll have dr roberts jump in here a little bit with some with some questions and some commentary throughout the game so appreciate his his joining so um nick you mentioned east records
067is 10 and two i believe they're ranked number nine in the state last i checked and north coming with a 7-3 record can you talk a little bit about the common opponents that they've that they've had so far this year absolutely it is because the style of plays are so different between the two teams it is kind of hard to gauge what what's gonna happen here because uh they play so different um but there are some common opponents martinsville both of them played martinsville and came away with the win but the most interesting to note i think is hamilt two of north three losses hamilton southeastern and east central uh east ended up winning uh beating hamilton southeastern by two and beating east central by nine so if you look at common opponents east has
068the upper edge there but they they really both start all juniors and seniors it'll be interesting to see north has started wilson as a sophomore and we expect her to get a lot of playing time but that's really the only the only underclassmen that we expect to get significant time so again an experienced group but i think for everyone having it been two years since they've last played it'll be new and if we go back two years ago they actually played twice and split split that series one north winning in regulation a regular season in east winning and sectional i'm going gonna pause here for the announcer to go [Applause] on officials are trained experienced and licensed they are officiating tonight's game because of their desires uh [Music] so [Applause] [Music] special thanks to the

077is certainly bothering north both on the offensive as well as defensive side of the ball a lot of offensive rebounds already for columbus season on the defensive side making it very difficult for north to get any anything inside i think losses take taking three or four little 10 15 foot jump shots not able to get those to drop and stage stall on the east side also getting the rim a little bit and just not getting going i think the offense the balls will start going the basket here and offensive start getting going on both teams here a little bit you would assume that both teams would settle in here a little bit maybe after that first time out and get the jitters out full court trap by east turned over by barker driving might have

099think one of the things you'll notice is how important is how offense leads the defense east is able to get a basket get into that press it really creates a situation where often times they've got a quick basket right back out of that it ended the first half that way and this little stretch here is based upon the same thing basket getting the press get a steeler turnover another basket and again sage just having a great game right now dr roberts you have some family history in the brown county school system and and gyms a couple of robert's names hanging in the banners there tell us a little about without you know humbly of course which i know you are tell us a little about the the roberts family basketball history in brown county the
100roberts family basketball history is my older brother but we certainly spent a lot of time in this gymnasium growing up watched a heck of a lot of basketball games saw brown county high school win the sectional championship against columbus seas 101 to 97 and my my brother was a junior on that danny robertson so yeah a lot a lot of fond memories here had some good games uh playing here i graduated in 83 so a long time ago for our listeners columbus north had really good teams back at that time uh dan daniels and and uh chris conley and i think shawn johnson may have been on that team ron berkley so some really good players back at that time so yeah this gym is special to me i've not watched the game very often

106throws so i know coach white will be looking at that at half and looking for adjustments to make to deal with the east pressure east has 34 points going into half they are led she seems everywhere brett uh sage stahl with 15 points grivy with eight bachmann has come up huge with six spear had a three and gant i don't know how many blocks she has but uh she also has one bucket she has 41 blocks nick 41 blocks and east only has 10 turnovers to norse 20. so east yeah their stars are showing up and really putting on a show and their role players are stepping up north is going to have to have that kind of flip the second half uh i i do think they got some really good open looks uh
107towards the end of that second quarter and hopefully they go down the second half you got to make shots and they're getting some good looks so hopefully that that turns around in the second half here as they regroup at halftime looking ahead a little bit uh east coming off that loss to ben davis here just this past tuesday uh they play eastern high school a 2a school uh looks like a week from tonight then they have zionsville at home and they are at seymour columbus north on the other hand as mentioned they are seven and three coming into the evening tonight we have a contest coming up next week against jennings county at home they host carmel here on the 23rd and they are in a shootout tournament in jeffersonville they play butler high school
108out of kentucky on december 29th then at terre haute north the next day quick turn around there for for travel the next day all right brad i'm gonna i'm gonna ask you this is there's not necessarily an elephant in the room but it's the uh bus outside memorial gymnasium tonight can you can you tell us about the what what everybody's going to see walking in is the new newly wrapped columbus east bust i think if you've been around sports you know that a lot of other schools have team sports buses it was it was really nice to see columbus have one and parked out front of this event tonight yeah it's kind of an interesting story the original plan was to have both high school buses done this week for rivalry week east's bus has
109been done for a few weeks now uh special thanks to bcse transportation for making that happen they've been hiding the bus in the bus garage for a reveal here um but unfortunately the north bus won't be done for a while longer here so the decision was made let's go ahead and put the the east girls on the bus and get them excited and uh and they were it's a good video of it so yeah special thanks to bcsc transportation uh for making that happen and north they will have theirs here in just a short uh short few weeks so just to reiterate to everybody columbus north is getting a bus it is getting completed uh we believe there it did get delayed because of a number of reasons i'm sure so north will have a
110bus here so don't worry but it is it's good to see columbus you'll see those buses around town i'm sure root on those sports teams as they travel really all over the state and support keep continue supporting our kids got a minute to go here in halftime or or so i i see former superintendent dr quick on the other side of the gym over there nick walking through it's special to see uh rivalry week bring out just so many people it's just such a such an important part to the community looking ahead at the sectional here nick these two teams are in the same sectional uh that section was hosted at bloomington north this year and um historically that that sectional is just loaded um obviously it looks like all things have to go through
111columbus east but east is there north is there east central um they won the sectional last year they're a very talented team state ranked martinsville is always good and then bloomington north bloomington south so we'll see we'll see how this one turns out and then we're going to see how the next 10 or 12 weeks or 10 or 12 games rather go here uh headed into a section where these teams may likely see each other again now brett has john harrell's side up and when the bloomington schools are at the bottom of the list you know it's a talented roster talented sectional east has the ball to start the second half they're moving the ball around pretty quickly here let's get settled into the second half gravy with the ball up top defended well by

113a good ball player and she's a force to be reckoned with out there also heard she's a pretty good golfer she is yeah not a bad golfer either sage stall you know we keep talking about her but sage seems like she keeps getting better every single day i mean she she also has some varsity minutes last year uh but she's a good player and she is she is getting better um certainly as things progress and leah bachmann another example for east we're like being able to expand her game on the perimeter a little bit it's going to pay off if she wants to play at the next level which which she is as i mentioned getting some looks from schools to be able to play college basketball north applying some good defensive pressure here this

116a had a collision there and came down with the ball um but oftentimes the referees will blow the whistle when they when they see those posts come down in a downward fashion with their with their arms there so coach brown does not have anybody for gant at this point so she's going to stay in the game with three call hold here on jones jones is playing about as aggressive fronting on grivy as you can get he's done a great job really all game there another quick one oh no they're going to call that on offensively against corinne yeah i think they're getting a little frustrated with each other getting some elbow room in there [Applause] turn her over off the inbounds had some cuts there east comes away with it bachmann up top sage stall
117lost kyla lawson had a hand on that ball and sage stahl just comes through contact and and one finishes and she goes to the line she she was wide open under there nick i take back what i said sage stall gets better by the minute lawson came came rushing down to to attempt the block there but that is lawson's third so it doesn't look like there's a sub right now but four teams here 441 here in the third period 40 to 15. uh dr roberts thoughts on any adjustments that north can do to shorten this this deficit that's a really tough question i mean looking at things so far yeah so so far this quarter um games changed a little bit a few more whistles here in the last minute or two uh i think
118that actually can help north uh given east aggression and ability to get to the basket um a few more free throws being shot i think we're at five fouls this half how many do we have the first half maybe 10 total something like that neither team got in the one on one so that's that's changed things uh a little bit but sage stall is a story continues to be the story right now any run that seems to be made by north she's responding well and has a chance for a three-point play here doesn't look like any substitutions out there so again we have lawson and gant out there with three fouls which could play role if north can go on a little run here as mentioned 4 41 on the clock here in the third
119sage stall finishes the three-point play barker's trapped in the middle stolen by bachmann she pulls up a little baseline eight-footer makes it look easy and north at this point struggling to get the ball inbound and up the floor they get it to their center justice who does a good job of handling the ball and getting up the court that ball is thrown away coach white is telling his girls to slow down and calm down here a little bit inbound to albany spear three guarded by three here alba is another good player who keeps getting better good look in there to bachmann she's gonna pull and get deflected by andrea justice good block there would be a foul on sage stall that is her second yeah the whistles are definitely picking up here maybe trying to
120get it under control a little bit too and in terms of the aggressiveness jones is substitute out now so it'll be interesting to see what north does with grivey ball's thrown away bozeman's the sub for jones the ball gets in the hands of leah bachmann she finishes at the rim two on one here up ahead to justice and kick it back out to bozeman who kicks it over to lauren barker top of the key same defense for east north did a good job swinging the ball there good good there by lauren [Applause] yeah there have been a couple a couple more wheels so that's a good point a couple more whistles after that uh that jones grivey exchange make it sound bad it really wasn't bozeman's gonna pull three and get blocked back up again

122i have the advantage to be able to watch a lot of these games that the girls play and north they just haven't faced a team that's as long as east and you can you can see by so many turnovers and deflections in the passing lane and there they just have it they haven't seen it so um they explained a lot of the turnovers here that ball is up top to harley gantt and what a foul late whistle there but we'll call a foul on catherine wilson that is her first team's fourth harley will go to the line here dr roberts i'm going to cut to you here real quick anything else you're noticing as we two minutes left in the third we're up above 30 there with that shot by gantt um we talked a
123little bit about earlier about trying to get to the line to trying to get things settled down here a little bit but um i'm not sure that that's uh going to be too effective at this point i think we talked to this several times in terms of the offense for east turning into defense and it didn't quite there but each time he scores they're able to get back into that press and that seems to get the ball right back i'm not sure where we are with turnovers but at one point in time i know we're over 20 for north and this kind of continues to build up at this time east goes to a timeout here 48-17 fouls this half north for east three which again is at a little bit higher rate than it
124was the first half [Music] dr bozeman's getting some stats here from old coach mcgee so yeah i do have an updated yeah i think the only thing worth updating here is you got you kind of give me a minute to count these up but turnovers uh for east looks like they're about 13 so that's three turnovers in the second half and north now with 24. so as this game has gotten a little away from columbus north here really last two quarters i i think they'll have to continue to look for things to build on as this is a potential sectional match up for them so look for them to continue making adjustments look for positive things to build off but again another turnover as he springs it down hard again with a good look to
125sage stall in the post [Applause] she does a she does a really good job of finishing at the rim nick lucy norman with a good look and a good move to the bucket that won't drop kyle loss with a strong rebound and put back north is going to need more of that one of kyla's strengths to be able to fly around grab rebounds and put him back up albany spear with a step through tangled up gonna be a jump ball stays with east [Applause] bro you mentioned sage finishing at the rim and i think that's extremely important sometimes you somebody has a high field goal percentage you say well it's because they're shooting the bass basketball around the rim all the time well if you're in traffic that's not an easy shot to make she
126is able to get her body in the right way and get the shot in the right way where she can get up off the glass and and make the shot so a really good quote-unquote layup shooter that's not necessarily easy when you're when you're in traffic good finish there by karen gravy yeah dr roberts it's a really good point and sage another turnover there for north sage is an athletic kid um and i'm not gonna go try to guess weights of girls but she she doesn't have a big frame i mean she plays like she is a much has a much bigger frame on the post uh and she you wouldn't you wouldn't guess but she uh she plays strong at the post and she finishes very well she does her aggression i think is
127a part of that and she just plays bigger than she is i think you said that maybe at the very start of the game is she's uh you know six foot or so but she plays much bigger than that just the way she uses her body uh positions herself and there's another turnover that leads uh leads to the basket games definitely williams you said earlier what can north gain at this point in time and made a really important point this is a potential sectional opponent so as we try to finish this game out is taking a look at things what what can we learn and grow from here [Applause] good rebound there by harley gantz he might have knocked heads with kyla lawson [Music] that clock is running down here 12 seconds left another good
128move by gantt [Music] [Applause] [Music] yeah they will administer a running clock here from from here on out that's the end of the third east leads 58 to 19. north just doesn't uh they just don't have an answer and these keeps running that was that was a 24 to seven quarter for east there so east really displaying some dominance here and i think norris frustration with it and really i think if you're columbus north they've they've done a pretty good job with grivy but in doing so and and again kind of looking ahead potential sectional match-ups they've got to figure out how to slow down stahl uh her her long [Music] frame she's athletic really can uh control her body around the the rim and i think that'll be something that coach white and his
129staff kind of look at moving forward as again they've they've done a pretty good job with their other stargrivy seeing what adjustments they can make and bachmann is now in double digits as well i believe a great point uh nick in terms of of grivy they've done a really nice job there um you know the jones girl has played and played her very tight uh they've got to know each other pretty well this game because they've been so up close and personal so a great job by the jones girl um i wonder as north gets into this fourth quarter and again just trying to learn some things and what kind of engagement are they going to get from each of their players with the score the way it is can they keep them engaged keep
130them locked in play as well as they can try to finish this thing strong that was that was harley gant again affecting another jump shot from columbus north as brett said i don't know if north has seen the size that east has right now and again that takes adjustment and they'll learn from it it's an open look spear knocks down the three you can't leave her open she'll she'll make those shots for sure we talked about leah bachman she finished out that third quarter strong that she mentioned before she does a good job handling the ball but she can pull up and shoot from 15 18 feet consistently and at the next level those are things that those coaches are going to be looking for to expand upon lucy norman with a good cut blocked
131by stage stall parker for three hits it that is the first three pointer for the night for north i believe they've had some good looks there see at this point dr roberts how well how well the bulldogs can stay engaged in this and and not become frustrated and yeah that's key and nice basket there by by lauren i think that was as nick said the first three they've had so they've had some decent looks couldn't get those to go down early and then sometimes those three pointers lead to runouts on the other end so just been a few things that have that early second quarter in particular started to build that lead and and uh getting to be a challenge i think we stall back at the line for a couple more free throws where
