001hi everyone craig smith proud principal at middle school central couldn't be more proud than to invite heath wingler to come up here with me so this is heath uh he's one of our amazing eighth graders at middle school central and uh i could tell some stories because i i don't often get to say that i've known a young man for seven years uh that i've been the principal there because he has only been with us three uh but he's been a gym rat i think for pretty much his whole life so uh i uh had some teachers talk about you does that make you nervous about that we'll see what they have to say all right so here here's what they had to say about heath heath works hard and gives 110 in all that
002he does whether it be in the classroom or in sports you can always count on heath to have a smile on his face heath is the perfect definition of well-rounded young man he's fantastic in his representation of everything middle school central heath or fernando i did not know that in spanish class he is always polite kind caring and ready to learn he is one of the best and brightest students the kindest and most respectful student who stands out the most and lastly the most impressive thing about heath is his commitment to being a good person this teacher is amazed and impressed daily with the patience care and love that he shows every human being in his life he makes everyone's life better because he is in it and i think that that just encompasses everything
003about pete wingler and that's why i brought him here to be our spotlight little uh student our our student he's not little anymore to lead us in the pledge of allegiance so without further ado heath if you'd lead us that would be to the great for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all congratulations [Applause] that's wonderful the first thing we need to do on the agenda is adopt the agenda anyone opposed no but just in case you guys are curious we are down two board members tonight due to uh spring break family vacations and whatnot so hope they're having a great time yeah okay moving on first i'm gonna do is uh do some recognitions and some awards this evening uh the first thing i'm gonna talk about
004is uh i'm honored to introduce these next two to uh high school kids uh the board like to recognize senior drake buck buckingham buchanan man i should have practiced that and hayden watson uh for finishing high school wrestling career state champions drake wrestled in the 182 waypower class hayden wrestled in the 145 pound weight weight class these young men helped lead our wrestling team to a january county tournament championship and make championship for the first time in school history and a sectional title the team broke the mixed scoring record sent 14 wrestlers to semi-state which is a school record and each earned individual state awards drake was also named an ihsaa mental attitude winner and they are not done yet drake has committed to wrestle at the united states air force hayden is committed to
005wrestle at citadel the board like to formally congratulate both of you on your great high school careers your state titles we wish you both the very best of luck in the future [Applause] [Music] director and i just want to you know these are always fun events they've gotten a lot of recognition this winter and deservingly so um but what these guys have done um a year ago they were actually my inspiration for our winter bank our winter awards program and that was redemption because a year ago they finished runners-up in the state and to do what they did a year later and be a state champ have that focus that drive just says a lot about their character their work ethic their discipline to the sport so we are very proud they fin i think
006they both finished with the record of 43-1 correct 43-1 which is super impressive um you know winning a state championship like we did in football this past fall is great and wonderful but to do it as an individual is something truly special because i mean these are the best of the best of the best in the state of indiana in their weight class 145 and the cherry on top the whole tournament was this young man being named the mental attitude award winner goes to one senior in every sport he got it in wrestling it's based on obviously you know his skill set on the mat his academics his character his citizenship and that is huge he's the 11th athlete to to own that title at center grove our first wrestler to to be named a
007mental attitude award winner so i i know it's not much they've been you know uh awarded plaques and whatnot at our award ceremony but the ihsaa who we are governed by our governing body the indiana high school athletic association there's 420 plus schools in this state and at the start of the school year they send every school a box of these pins 20 pins every school gets 20 pins and it says you make our school and community proud and this 25 pin i hope when you look at it you know that you have made this school and community very very proud so one for you drake and one for you haiti all right 178. i'd love to have that waiting congratulations [Applause] next on the agenda i'm going to turn it over to uh amy
008counts this evening the board would like to recognize sophomore mia for becoming center grove high school's first state champion diver uh mia has a oh sorry i'm so sorry i'm not used to turning this on mia i'm actually so my main name is plaguemen so i had to practice saying your name so i hope that i didn't butcher it either because everybody butchered my maiden name just so you know yes okay mia has a very impressive resume after only two years of competition she's earned two sectional titles two regional titles two mick titles and two county championships she's also placed second in state finals her freshman year mia also set the center grove high school six dive record at 316.85 and remember she's a sophomore the board would like to formally congratulate mia on her
009state title we know mia has put in countless hours of training to get where she is and we know she has a very bright future ahead of her [Applause] a few quick things about me and the best thing about her is it was mentioned she's a sophomore so we get two more years with mia hopefully but uh you know mia mia's just an elite diver she's at a completely different level than than what you see at most swim meets and it's just a you know a blessing to have her diving for center grove she sets the bar high she's a very hard worker very dedicated just like our wrestlers they just you know are wired differently not only you know in their sport but in the classroom all three of these students are great in
010the classroom they're leaders in the classroom leaders you know in the diving well on the mat so you couldn't ask for anything more as an athletic director as a high school principal as a school board as a community than these three young people that that wear the center grove singlet and swimsuit so again mia you were not forgotten i also have this you make your school in community proud pin and i will say of the 20 pins we get annually they've been doing this campaign for about four years we don't give these out lightly we just don't hand these out like they're you know candy canes of christmas all right some years i don't even give them all out because i want them to meet something again it's not much but it's a small token
011you can put you know in a shadow box on your letter jacket and uh just think of how proud we are of you so congrats yeah mia i just wanted to tell you in my day the diving board was at a lake on top of the hill that was cinder grove's first swimming the belly flop okay that was that was great uh the next thing we're actually going to skip 4.4 and move on to 4.5 real quick um to the center grove health services team and with that being said i'm going to pass it over to dr arkanov thank you mr herbert um i'd like to have mr taylor and mrs norman come up here we're going to start by introducing our health services team this year and last year and the year before that
012um was probably the worst three years in the history of public education maybe and of course obviously the world but definitely in public education and um i have to say that all of these ladies and this gentleman worked hard every day and put up with a lot and did it with a smile on their face most of the time and you know really honestly there isn't enough that we can do for all of you and tell all of you to really tell you how much we really appreciate the hard work and dedication that you put in each and every day but especially you know these last few years with some really unreasonable expectations from the whole world on you so we just first want to take a moment to recognize you and i'm going to
013ask amy if she would call you each up and we just get a rope picture of you up here and so as we as we start that you know we just want to recognize all the folks for what they've done during this you know challenging time and you know there was a lot going on a lot to figure out on the fly and sometimes people weren't very nice to you and for that i apologize um but uh you know the good news is hopefully we are turning around a bit so thank you all so much and we're going to call them all up and then we'll uh we'll uh congratulate them all right tony newland she is our nurse at pleasant groves [Applause] she's my favorite nurse [Laughter] you better be saying that thank you
014now one more thing before you ladies take off we want to take a moment here and recognize two very special people that wow we all know you were down in the trenches with the with the work they were working super hard to try to make as much of your life as easy as possible and they were making a lot of very difficult decisions as i shared in probably the most difficult time in the world obviously and so with that the school board would like to recognize the both of you and i know jason you're mad at me now but we'd like to recognize both of you with the shining star award and so for those of you that don't know this is a very unique award that the board created a few years ago and
015the primary thing is that you've done something above and beyond um something so significant that you know it's changed people's lives and it's saved people's lives some of the individuals that have received this in the past have done exactly that out on the football field in the stands and other places so with that just thank you both and i think our folks are gonna joe's gonna read this is that right yeah i can yeah ahead so we would like to nominate amy amy norman uh for center girl from center grove health services coordinator and jason taylor center grove assistant superintendent of human resources and college and technology to the shining star award as many of you know these two have been tasked with leading the district's coveted planning for the last two years like rich
016said to echo that the shiny store award is is recognized for employee students or a community member for that matter who has gone beyond the expectations to make center grove community a better place to be eligible for a shiny star war the nominations must have exhibited actions that go beyond his or her normal job duties or daily responsibilities the nominee must demonstrate that he or she went above and beyond in one of the four areas those four years are make a difference in a life of someone else foster a more productive workplace or school community encourage teamwork and collaboration within the center glove community school corporation or community and initiated a positive change somehow so i just would like to personally thank you guys because you know we got beat up and i couldn't even
017imagine what you guys went through so um this is the least we could do to be honest with you i don't know if you guys want to see anything but like this is we're very lucky to have both of you here center grove and i uh i don't know how you guys did it honestly yeah as you know as you can imagine the board was getting a lot of questions shall we say the last couple of years and of course we had to immediately go to the medical person because none of us are medical people and i'm sure we were asking questions sometimes that you thought why don't you know this but [Laughter] you were very even keel with us at all times of course you've had to learn that living with adam but anyway
018[Laughter] but no we really do appreciate both of you how you stayed even keel with us even when we were asking very pointed questions at times trying to figure this all out a major resource to us so we're very grateful i agree i you know joining halfway through i can't imagine what you went through the first half of it but i can tell you that there were long meetings and not only the times that they put in during school hours i won remember one meeting in particular where we were here until 10 15 at night i mean there are hours that you guys put in above and beyond what was you know expected and we appreciate you because we wouldn't we wouldn't have made it through without you right now [Applause] thank you very much
019and so for those of you that don't know uh health services uh supervision switching over to dr long in a little while and dr long said he wouldn't take it until jason cured coke so apparently thank you all for coming thank you very much thank you ladies thank you so much and thank your spouses too i know [Music] i know thank you okay the next one on the agenda we're going to move forward is the uh center of alum and friends hall of fame thank you my name is jennifer royto and i have the awesome job of serving as the executive director of the center grove education foundation and i'm here tonight um to share with the public and with the board and with the administration um a great ignition initiative that we're getting ready
020to roll out and that's our senator of alumni and friends hall of fame next slide please um in looking at this project we came across this great quote from jfk and he said i think the success of any school can be measured by the contribution the alumni make to our national life and that's what we wanted to take a look at we know that we've got amazing people who have graduated from center grove who go out into the world and who are doing really neat and cool things and we wanted to recognize and celebrate those people and that's what we're hoping to do here with this hall of fame next slide please so the center grove alumni and friends hall of fame will recognize graduates and community members for their professional achievements and their personal
021contributions to improve the lives of others in society and our group has worked really hard to formalize this process and looking at okay what do we want the criteria for this hall of fame to be what's the rubric and which we're going to use to judge these potential candidates and then how are we going to go about selecting and then celebrating these individuals next slide so looking at the requirements for eligibility there were a couple of things that we thought were important so for those who have graduated from center grove we're looking for nominees that graduated at least 10 years ago or individuals who have been a resident of the center grove community here for a continuous period of at least 10 years or individuals who have made substantial contributions to the community along with
022that we're looking for nominees who have had special achievement in their area of specialty or received honors awards or other recognitions on either the local regional national or international level and then we're also looking for nominees that have demonstrated leadership character and service to society in general or to a specific segment of the society next slide so we're currently accepting nominations so i hope that you all will think about folks that you know who have been involved with the center grove community who may be a good fit um to be nominated for this hall of fame um we're working on trying to get it out into all of our our public um news sources in terms of spreading the word and we've already got nominations and i'm really excited like i said we know we've
023got great people out here now we're just trying to find them you can complete the application electronically online at centerglovealumni.org there's also a printable version available for folks who might feel more comfortable printing that out and filling it out they can drop it in the mail to us and then we also have applications available here at the reception desk if people want to stop by and pick those up so once we receive those nominations next slide um the selection committee will meet and vote on our nominees um hopefully by late may we're looking at notifying those individuals who have been selected in june and are looking forward to a celebration that we'll hold this fall to recognize those folks so like i said we just wanted to share that with you guys tonight and like
024i said if you know of people who wow you know what they would be a perfect fit for this i hope that you'll con you'll consider nominating them um or let us know and we can look at it about getting them nominated um and if you have any questions i'd be happy to answer those at this time i have one jennifer right up here thank you um are you going to have a specific amount of people that you nominate yearly or is this just whoever fits that criteria yeah we decided um not to set a specific number in that we didn't want to have to necessarily fill a quota if we felt like um you know one year we didn't maybe have as many candidates as another year so we're looking at keeping that number
025flexible at this point and and the nominees that you do not select will you notify them that they release nominated and didn't make it we will we'll notify them and let them know that they were nominated we'll also keep those applications um on file for three years so they could go the next year somebody wouldn't have to nominate the next year that could go ahead and be reviewed in the following year as well okay i think that's great what you're doing i think that's great awesome looking forward to it yeah what do you mean you're gonna think you're gonna get nominated well i appreciate you letting me share with you guys this evening thank you very much public health public comments would be next i don't believe we have any tonight okay uh so moving
026on consent agenda items thank you mr hubbard this evening i'm recommending that the board approve the consent agenda items as presented mr president i move to approve the consent agenda as presented motion has been made executive to approve the consent gen items all in favor say aye hi anyone opposed motion passes thank you let's take a really quick minute um and we'll uh recognize tonight you want me to do that okay um i'm really honored this evening if i could have uh dr nelson please stand come on up here so dr nelson is moving over from center grove elementary which i know her staff is extremely sad but she's coming over to the central office to serve as our new director of human resources and she'll be working closely with uh jason and bill so
027um we're super excited for her to be uh joining us here in the central office we'll be doing this now i'm standing thank you you had like about a nice little speech to you yeah i'm just honored thank you all so much i grew up in this community um long-standing tradition and when i came back to senator of elementary school it was like a dream come true but to know that i can do what i want to do and vision and mission for our community and for our kids and to expand that even more um is just a dream i never thought i would have a chance to do so thanks to all of you for allowing me to give back to a community that i love and kids that i love and family and
028friends i just so appreciate it so thank you absolutely well deserved thank you [Applause] krista why don't you introduce your guest i sure will um this is my daughter carter she is a fourth grader at center grove elementary school my husband chuck i definitely wouldn't be here today without them they've been living through the past four years of a superintendent's license and a doctorate so and then online i think my mom and dad are in florida right now all right [Music] all right yes absolutely chris i just want to say congratulations as well because as you know both my daughters came through your school and uh i'm glad that they're out of there now before you left so they uh every time i went in there it just seemed like you were very you gave
029every person every child and student your time in your face and that is extremely important and uh thank you very much for everything you do thank you next on the agenda is the the hearing for the 1028 correct that's correct thank you this evening's this evening is the hearing prior to selling bonds to finance the middle school building projects um it will be turned over to mr hubbard to run the hearing is that correct that's not correct this is as you see on this yeah it's sugar grove in high school sorry so this evening and that was properly advertised as the sugar grove in high school renovations okay and so now i will turn this over to you mr hubbard to open the meeting yes okay i now open this public meeting i would like
030to turn over to dr gabriel to present the project the financing of the project and actions we are taking this evening sometimes when we read stuff up here i feel like uh anchorman and i i am ron burgundy [Music] thank you if you were with us back in february this is the same presentation we gave then but just want to review quickly the the projects both at sugar grove and at the high school that's me still sorry so at sugar grove we're doing a few things uh uh some some large things in this phase we're gonna uh build a new gym that will be isolated from the main classroom area so when it's used during the weekends like we've done at uh north grove and center grove elementary we'll add some security cameras we'll continue
031and finish the renovation to the south wing renovate the core educational support spaces renovate the admin offices we're going to enlarge the cafeteria we're going to use the cafeteria and the lgi combine that to make one big cafeteria we'll convert the existing gem to the large group instruction space as well as some office space for our sport again talk about the new gym and then we'll add an additional playground for the grade levels that that we're still short one playground over there the nice thing is it keeps the stack tax rate steady we should be able to do this project and with maintaining the current tax rate so just to give you an idea of what we're going to do the the the area highlighted in yellow uh is what we're working on right now
032it's the new edition everything in blue uh to the left and then down is uh the classrooms that still need to be renovated and then you can see the gem at the bottom there in the the yellow square and the playground right beside that go ahead so just to blow that up a little bit so this is the admin area and the the gym the cafeteria and lgi space that we we need to renovate um go ahead then this is the the hallway leading down to uh the the new gymnasium space we'll do renovation in those carpet paint some cabinetry work where it's necessary new led lights just like we've done in all of our elementary schools just to match the what the work that we've done in those other buildings as well so at
033the high school again we'll do some security cameras uh we're going to need to increase the size of the bus parking and uh and some additional visitor and student parking space we'll add a set of classrooms about 25 of them some collaboration space and a secondary food court as you know we're growing bigger and bigger and the cafeteria being in the middle of the high school forces us to have an alternate place to be able to feed staff and again we can do this project while maintaining the current tax rate i do have with us tonight bill payne from fanning howie the architect firm that we've selected to do the high school project so bill's over here thanks for coming down tonight bill and uh jim goalie from aecom hunt is here and i know
034scott's not here to ask you know when are we going to be done so one of you are going to have to ask that for jim go ahead please so at the high school this is on the south end of the the the high school near door three adjacent to the natatorium the the side in color the the um is the addition that we're planning on adding the second phase in black and white it's like the wizard of oz it's ones like what we're going to do and the other one's in black and white we're not there yet so um but those are the classroom spaces go ahead please just from a different view you can see how we're going to connect it to the school and how it connects to the the natatorium and
035where those classes will sit when we do that go ahead please then dr gabriel will talk to you about the hard stuff about the funding if you have any questions though please feel free to ask i think mr golly or mr payne can answer anything too so thank you so uh so we have been working obviously with the architect and with with hunt to develop cost estimates for this project and i know that behind the scenes we put a lot of detailed work into that i think the bottom line here is that the sugar growth renovation proposed cost is 10 million six that includes all of the actual construction costs as well as the the other costs for financing and furnishings and other things associated with that uh the high school project um obviously is
036a lot bigger we're adding on a lot more square footage there you go yes thank you and the the cost of this project again including which includes all the hard construction as well as other related costs is 19 million 750 000 okay uh this is the the legally required information we need to produce i think the key items on on this page are first of all that we'll be selling bonds and they'll be paid back over a period of 20 years and then the information that we like to highlight at the bottom and that is that the overall tax rate for the school corporation will not increase do the repayments to the bonds for these projects go ahead uh this is the chart i know the board's seen it many times but we like to
037remind everyone and this is our attack what our tax rate's been for since uh 2009 we we really believe that um barring any really unusual things happening we should be able to continue that level rate for quite some time into the future and then we also like to do a comparison of how we sit with the other school districts in the county this is our our 2022 tax rates and we're sitting right now just a little bit below a dollar three we've been in that middle category for at least the last decade so so the schedule for this um we had a hearing in february the first hearing this is the second hearing uh tonight uh and after this uh there's a variety of legal steps that have to be gone through we plan to
038come back to the board uh with a third hearing in the regular july board meeting uh and then we would anticipate that bids for this work would be completed would be brought to the board probably in december of this year and and then in terms of the completion of this work um the again the sugar growth project is smaller we would anticipate that being done by the fall of 2024 and the high school project hopefully would be done by the spring of 2025. and the first payment on these bonds doesn't take place until 2025 so occasionally we get asked where can i see this in in the budget well you won't actually see this in a budget until you see the budget for 2025. so with that uh i think i'd turn the hearing back
039over to mr hubbard to ask for comment thank you sir this appropriate time for members of the public to comment on the high school and sugar girl building projects of the information presented this evening are there members of public president who would like to comment no after anybody i now close this public hearing are there any board members who has comments or questions i got my answer okay i got it how are you gonna give his presentation good okay i was listening okay wow you're all going shopping okay so now we just need to move nothing from you okay well bill and jim thanks for coming thank you that was easy thank you all right are we going to be down on time yeah when's this that's the main thing okay okay with that being
040said we're going to need a motion mr president i move that we approve the resolution of proving the 1028 preliminary determination reimbursement and related matters for the high school and sugar grove building projects most have been made as seconded all in favor say aye aye anyone opposed question passes thank you thank you gentlemen basketball thank you guys yeah not till tomorrow oh next on the agenda is 7.2 approve a resolution for property purchase thank you mr hubbard this evening i'm recommending that the board approve a resolution to purchase property and dr long will provide you with some additional information so for school corporation to purchase land we have to make sure we follow the the following procedures we have to adopt a resolution indicating the corporate corporation's interest in purchasing the specified land or structure
041we the district should shall appoint two appraisers to appraise the fair market value of the structure or the land the appraisers must be professionally engaged in making appraisals or be trained as an appraiser and license as a as an appraiser under indiana code the appraiser shall return their separate appraisals to the district and the district shall keep the appraisals on file in the purchasing agent's office for five years so in the resolution it authorizes the school corporation to take all steps necessary to acquire the property for not more than the the appraised value and related expenses it's actually the average of two appraisals we the the resolution indicates we're interested in purchasing the property at 49.88 pennington drive and it permits the corporation to appoint two appraisers and it allows the corporation's purchasing agent to
042enter into a purchasing agreement for the amount not to exceed the average of the two appraisals the the the resolution also authorizes the school district officials to execute the necessary documents to complete the sale this is like we've done in the past whenever we've property that's come up that we're interested in but we need the board we're asking tonight for the board to approve the resolution to purchase property thank you so thank you any questions we'll need a motion mr president i move that we approve the resolution improving the um well let me move down got the wrong one we've done sugar grove heavily yeah well where'd it go turn it lost it there we go technology you got it up mr president i move that we approve the resolution to purchase the property as
043presented emotion has been made that won't happen i second motion is seconded to approve the resolution and purchase of property all in favor say aye bye anyone opposed motion passes thank you thank you thank you there it is next on the agenda is the adoption of textbooks and materials for elementaries thank you mr hubbard this evening i'm recommending that the board sorry this evening i'm recommending that the board approve the i think it should be the 20 21 20 22 20 20 23 textbook and supplemental materials for adoption so with that i'm going to turn it over to mr shawstak who's going to present to you thank you thank you good evening i'd like to present the following textbooks for adoption for the 2022-2023 school year in reading in kindergarten through fifth grade there's pieces
044that come in there you go scholastic literacy is a new resource the textbook committee went through a robust process to identify this resource that best supports our curriculum in math kindergarten through fifth grade stavis and vision is the current resource and we are extending beyond the six-year adoption so tonight i am recommending a three-year adoption of this text in music kindergarten through fifth grade it is also a current quaver is a current resource but it requires an updated subscription next slide thank you i'd like to take this opportunity to give you a high level overview of the in-depth reading adoption process that guided our team on the previous slide you heard that was one of our new resources so i'd like to tell you a little bit about that committee the committee consisted of 54
045members who were teachers administrators instructional coaches and parents the team met five times throughout the school year to review materials listen to publisher presentations discuss each resource and provide feedback so they were very busy and you can see they're the composition of the team next slide thank you ultimately like i mentioned before the team selected scholastic literacy it is a comprehensive resource that utilizes authentic literature and will engage readers and foster a joy of reading i've included some highlights here and go ahead and click through each teacher will be equipped with classroom a classroom library every school will include have a school book room every student has student materials with this new series and we also will be gaining an ebook platform with over 2000 titles and with that i'm going to pause because this
046is a separate agenda item so what questions can i answer about our textbooks and materials and the elementary grades this question comes up it seems like every time is how are people informed that you could be a part of this committee whether you're a staff member or community member how's that get out there maybe that's a stacey question sure well we have a process that we have representatives from every grade level in every building so we had a team you could see of 36 teachers and they are typically the teams who also work in that curricular area so they're the teachers who are working together year-round if they are kind of on our math curriculum team they usually work in the math textbook adoption committee and parents are usually involved with the schools and our
047principals reach out to them and say are you interested in participating in this committee and our parents were rock stars we had three that were very very involved in the process this year attended all the meetings all the publisher presentations and then we do um two weeks prior to the board meeting tonight we post it on our website and we send it to the daily journal for anyone in the community to review we have all the materials on display here at central office so anyone can peruse all of those resources okay public or at school they are also in on display in each building so we have samples in each building as well as here at central office great question any other questions okay i wanted to share and this was a very this is
048always an involved process but this reading adoption was more involved and we've put this off for a couple of years because we wanted to talk about how we need to teach reading differently and fill in some holes where we had some gaps where we were seeing some of the students who maybe were struggling readers or not picking it up quickly we needed better resources and better strategies and supports not only materials but how we were teaching and so marcy has worked this is really the end of a three process to get us there to adopt the stuff that matches the student needs and the teacher needs to teach students better and so now it's taking all this stuff and and putting it in action so it's it's a mindset shift and marcy's um you know
049she's licensed as a reading specialist in addition to her regular teaching license and that all has been her work's been the foundation of being able to make this very big move so i i'm really i was her cheerleader because she's the the bearer of the knowledge and so i appreciate that work and our teachers are very excited they know it's a lot of work but they're excited to have what they need and so um we're going to be able to do more for kids with this adoption this may seem like a silly question but when we do adoption it for like math it'll be k through 12 right or we have we have typically stayed on the same cycle but to make intentional decisions we are a little bit off cycle so right now reading
050is adopting in kindergarten through fifth grade and that's why we're separate usually mrs carroll fry will be here with me but we're adopting different subjects this year because we were doing some of that groundwork to lay the curriculum and practices before we adopted so it typically runs on a six-year cycle where you're in tandem but we've gotten a little off cycle to make those instructional intentional decisions we had delayed reading so we were two or three years over that six year cycle and that's why you'll see in the fees our reading fee was much lower because we were already outside of our six-year cycle and the state used to have us on that six-year cycle and that really has gone away and so districts are adopting at all different times um so this is an
051unusual in the state that you can adopt to meet your needs and not when the state says you should be adopting new materials great question any others i just i just like to thank nora and marcy yes marcy for you guys hard work and you're in the the team that you guys put together to make this happen and uh i really like hearing that you involve community members um different staff and uh the transparency of it is wonderful so i think it's great thank you we're excited okay need a motion please i move that we approve the elementary textbook and rental and fees for 2022 and 2023. yep oh no no no the materials sorry even one two four i move that we approve that 2022 no that's what i just read nope okay 20
05222 and 23 textbooks and supplemental materials presented for adoption passes thank you moving on uh the 2022 2023 textbook rental and fees that's me again okay so along with those wonderful new materials we also need to talk about our course fees and kindergarten through fifth grade tonight so due to mainly that reading that new reading resource adoption our grade level course fees have increased across all of our grades there was also outside of the reading adoption that savis envision math adoption was a slight increase as well so the increase ranges between 12 dollars and 24 depending on the grade level however this chart um i want to explain a little bit um and let you know that the teaching and learning team has worked very hard to keep fees low i know we talk about
053that usually every year we review every line item in the textbook fees and what's going into it with extreme scrutiny so nothing we take light-heartedly when we're looking at these fees so i did want to point out something that we came across that even though we've seen an increase in fees this year it is comparable to the last initial reading adoption so as i had mentioned our reading materials were outdated we were about three years over with our last new adoption period in 2015-16 you can see the two yellowish columns you can compare i put last year's fees in the middle so you can see that increase not to be misleading it is increasing from last year to this year but when you look at the previous reading adoption period um and if you could
054click it should come up you can see we are only um from that many years ago it was about seven years ago we are um up two dollars and 27 cents in kindergarten and up 12.29 in second grade and in the other grade levels we are actually lower than we were in 2015 and 16. so i just thought that was an interesting comp to pull that at those initial reading adoption those resources are the most expensive in the elementary because they come with such rich literature and materials for our students so i did want to make a point to mention that and i know you have the chart in your board packet of the fees so if you had any questions about that i did not put that in the slide deck you haven't gone
055to display sure that'd be great so you can see it up on the big screen and then yes that's the one we usually look at here and so this just displays across gears how you can see our fees kindergarten through fifth grade and essential skills and then bridges academy is across the bottom any questions that i can answer about our fees any emotions there's no questions mr president i move that we approve the elementary textbook rental and fees for 2022-2023 thank you jack motion made a segment all in favor say aye aye anyone opposed motion passes thank you thank you yeah uh we only have one announcement tonight that's april 21st will be our next board meeting at 7 p.m right here in this room um and also we have uh spring break starting next
