good evening I have 5:30 so I will call the uh Board of Education regular meeting for May roll call all administrators and board members are present remind everyone that we are a character ccil Corporation and the full of respect is being highlighted this evening so this time I would like everyone to join me in the Pledge of [Music] Allegiance pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America the Republic for it stands one nation under godible with liy and justice for all I have to say that was the best pledge all right the first item on the agenda is Spotlight on Excellence all right good evening everyone um our Spotlight on Excellence this month kind of covers our entire Corporation so something new that we did this year is we wanted every student

student in the corporation to be involved in a service project our motto is enter to learn go forth to serve so it was a nice challenge to kind of put out to our administrators and they took it to their leadership teams and they delivered so every Crawfordville student every building every class every student had the opportunity to be in a service project for our community near and abroad so wison actually Heidi since you're here you want to go ahead and share I prise so um so we decorated some Valentine's Day cards for the nursing home um we had some students paint um some students actually wrote So Co here um actually wrote like a we love you to the nursing homes and so they were able to you know work on their OT and their

writing skills and then Mr brought some examples to some of the doin cards look like this as they painted and then we um went actually my children and I went around to the nursing home to pass them out to the nursing home and it was a great time for them to be in the community so and I have one little girl she's going to show up she just got cine so she might walk in here a little bit too Colton thank you for doing that very nice all right excellent here have some pictures yeah and this presentation was put together by the middle school digital arts class so yeah la H principles I know you weren't prepared but since you're here yeah so um as we had done a little bit of a project I

started with Mrs Cheney reading a story about um families and how you get together and support each other during holidays and different H and there was a student who asked a question of what happens if you don't have family there and that led to what could we do for those individuals so we had um half of our building made cars for deployed service members and those were sent out and um we had I think it was 170 or 180 some cards that we sent out and then um the other grade level made Christmas banners that were then taken around all the nursing homes to add some Christmas cheer to their environment [Music] photos of the activities thank you [Music] hoes all right hey at Nicholson we did a movie night fundraiser for the saers family

um through um student council thank you and then we did a food drive for fish and then we did care packages for soldiers around the holiday time so thank you [Music] um well Hoover we had quite a few um service projects we did a grounds cleanup um in the fall straining out the M The Mulch and uh just making Hoover look nice um we did a food drive during Red Ribbon Week um student council um had a movie night to make a donation to Riley Hospital uh and we had a blood drive um and we also um did building W cards for Wellbrook um and then just recently it didn't make it onto the slideshow that our student council um had a student council Carnival and raised $1,500 for the Mary L Middle School do

a lot um so and these aren't even all of them but our team does an amazing job incorporating all the students and so that they can U learn how to help other people and some of the ones that I'm really proud of that we did this year we collected bottle caps from Gatorade bottles water bottles and they actually turned those bottle caps in the were called buddy benches and uh the family who supports that particular Foundation is to um basically give kids a buddy someone who they can count on someone that they can depend on um because their son lost their or took his own life and so uh we were excited to be able to support that family and it was a really really neat uh ceremony to came and dedicated VES to our

students we raised enough or we've collected enough fott caps for two benches which was awesome uh we have done a lot this year with um also for Riley they did the tab collection uh I've never seen so many pop tabs in my life these kids they they go all in on what they're doing and we also have a lot of fun with our teach teachers they always want to do um silly things to our teachers so we've kissed llamas this year and uh we had a crazy teacher dress up where students nominated and voted for their favorite teachers and they had a fashion show and that raised money for our individual teacher grants so the 18 would get grants to teachers in our building to do things for our students so and you'll see some

of the silly silly pictures of things that we've done so standing and great [Music] pictures a high school so I did not ask the principls to come tonight but we had teacher discussion right before which was very hectic but was kind of nice that you guys all just showed up so um maybe a new tradition um so at the high school nth graders made appreciation notes for service members 10th grade did an animal welfare League fundraiser the 11th grade visited nursing home um and used the jazz band and made some bird feeders so that was interesting exciting the seniors have not yet completed theirs but when they do their um senior March so as they visit the buildings then that afternoon they will have a service project at the high school so helping clean up

so um it really was one of these things that we talked about last July of doing initially some people are like oh that's a lot to do but then in general a lot of people realize we're already doing most of these things but I think it was just another effort just we have so many individuals in our community that support our schools to make the effort to provide a little bit of service back out so grateful for all the efforts of our administrators our staff and our students to complete their service projects so that was our Spotlight on excellent all right thank you very much thanks to all the students for doing these projects as well next item is the building princip C so um tonight we have a group of students here they are

they are our student ambassadors and they are going to share with you what they do um for Nicholson and our new students and community members so they have a little presentation for you [Music] for hi my name is Berkeley Davis I a second grader at Nicholson Elementary thank you for letting us share about a new program at n the student ambassador program is a new club that started to help students parents and community members feel more welcome and connected to our school hello my name is Michael Newton as a student ambass we receive special training to help build leadership SK we have monthly meetings after to school to help prepare to be an ambassador for our school my name is Clayton CER student ambassador is someone who helps the students on their first day of

school we give tours of the building to our new families and answer questions to help our new students feel welcome my name is Jackson Perry I another responsibility of the student is welcome and give tour community members who come and visit our school we take pride in what our school and school and what other good evening my name is Elizabeth my favorite part of being a Nicholson student ambassador is helping and caring for new students and fames being a student ambassador has been my favorite part of [Music] hello my name is I can speak Spanish so so I can help St and fames who who does not who do not speak Eng we we want our all our things you feel included and welcome my name is p thank you for letting us share about

our new program if you ever need a to help welcome a group through our school give us a call we want all of our profs with families to feel connected in okay so the neat thing about this is that they each wrote their part and decided what they would share today and what you all needed to know so that is another thank you Jill and Mary shler part of her Outreach kind of work school counselor great job guys [Music] bring it down like memorandums all right next is to approve the previous meeting minutes any addition all in favor there no business to business consider mem the Cal adult resour Academy that is a mouth so um yeah theou that you see there again is between North Montgomery and car what it is for um for

Cara and they will be adding a welding certification uh to their program so uh with that already occurring at North through the CT program um so with with that partnership there this will allow us to use the facilities there and the equipment there um to be able to offer um that certification through car so um the development Workforce Department uh offers funding for high demand areas and and needs and and Welding is one of those so Kathy ADV does a great job of finding those those funing opportunities and and then being able to turn that around and offer that to our adult program so um we are currently looking at somewhere between 10 and 15 um that would be taking place with this with be in after hours um as well and um the current

CTE um instructor uh you will see on the list down layer for hirers will be the one that will be doing this too so with that I would recommend approval of this uh any discussion why is it under Cara regular CTE so the CT it's the adult program versus the CTE is so we offer their welding programs through CTE but the adult ed is trying to expand their offerings so thanks yes so curent role in the G program or school okay any other discussion I would entertain a motion to approve I Mo approval this second all in favor I next item is to consider a school-based mental health provider Grant this grant is provided by the office of Elementary and secondary education it's a 5year grant it's designed to support schools to ensure we are

able to offer Mental Health Services for our students the Grant's focus is on providing staff um to provide counseling therapy and essential resources within the educational setting the primary objective is to ensure that students have access to the necessary resources to support theal health and overall wellbeing we use Esser funding Co money to cover social workers um and some of those type of positions that funding um is ending and so this is our opportunity to not only try to continue to have our Mental Health Providers but also to grow our program so I would recommend the approval of the Grant application any discussion very much motion to approve second all in favor I next item is consider policy 437 Wireless Dev is the first reading not require any actions yeah so the policy you see

there um is a required policy that comes out of CER Bill 185 on um basically coming up with a policy that governs the the use of um wireless devices so um this was initially drafted uh with isba with their sample policy and you'll see policy there that it kind of outlines um the the definition um prohibition piece of that um and then there's also some some areas where the rule does not get VI violated so a teacher does still have permission to implement the devices and use them for educational purposes so they still have the flexibility to do that um if it's part of their healthare or um it or 504 um diabetes is a good example some students that used their their devices to to monitor their blood sugar that would also be still

okay and and possibility for those students to use that as well so um we are working um with trying to gain some some insight with our our networks too with this being a new policy and um seeing what some others are doing as well so they seem to be navigating the waters similarly um as as we are so I would point out that the word possession in the policy is likely one that will um will get removed so it is not required from legislation um it is really the using that it's not language from legislation so when you throw things like smart watches into the equation and thinking about managing something like that just possession on the classroom becomes a bit of a test so um happy to take any any questions or or thoughts

or back as where that stands now and it's position in the classroom not what what I'm passing per is on one strikes that sort of thing so that is our understanding as of now is um basically instructional class instructional but uh there are a couple areas we in teacher discussion we talked about this evening I want to give a little bit more clarity on with the educational purpose um what exactly is the definition of educational purpose and where it's within the school we're not we're not talking about going to like expanding a program like you saw the article about the Connecticut bu school that uses couches that if not I'll forward that to you [Music] rob to just to it locks them it locks them during the day and magnetic to un we're not talking

about that we're talking about more H system and honestly a lot of the things that are in place with this are already things that are happening that are part of our student handbooks and stuff I don't know how if it would be better to introduce it kind of stage the phase at end but I I would be strongly favor just phone free phone free school day not have them not even have access during perod how different is is this than what already exists in the I assume it's fairly similar it it is yeah um I mean you know our high school and middle school um operate a little bit differently but as you know you work with the ages of the the students that that changes a little bit there um it does filter into

ele a little bit um we've got the watches and devices still showing up it's early second grade things so it is there um but but yeah I would say mainly what what is is here is already kind of what's in place and happening it seems to be working I mean is it happening I think there's an issue of enforcement right so um I was the speaking wheel for a while came on wants to speak this wheel with me thank you um and there was a time when it was kind of like I just sort of throw up your hands honestly like it's just too prevalent um and then the BYO d right your advice allowed for more anyway right people bringing this cell phone uses high school has signally improved in the last two years

um it's but it still will vary room to room but I think I can do my labs now in on the two floors and maybe see see one kid with their phone out um and different classrooms will come along this I think will give a little bit of support I think the legislation when it first came out was was going to be really strong and it wented back to something is very similar but we have to have it so that is good but I I do think it is there I the opportunity I actually sub to Kelly Bowlings class and um the students come in and they go put their devices is in a tray um or you see him put them away now did I see probably once slip out of a bucket probably

but um texting the Mom it's always the mom right um trying to get the mom to call in sick for so um yes that is there but definitely what you would see at the high school two years ago compared to now it's dramatically improved obviously the middle school has been in a very good place for while but I would you want you know it has improved so maybe you could introduce phone free school at the middle school and then they are their behavior is modified by the time they get to high school I would also not to just RI bandage right off no no phones at all put in the legisl right sorry well we we're smarter than legisl we should be local control local control um so when you say that do you mean

not even bringing them into the building I'm thinking of like a 15-year-old who is going to have to arrange a ride for practice at 6 o' but is that we did it all before certainly did we certainly did all there were payon right with bring back pay yeah bring back pay haveon in every room all right any other discussion on the wiress device [Music] prohibition we will move on to the next ad Food Service management company contract R yeah so this is our renewal for U chart Wall's uh food service so um it's been a been a good partnership and and appreciate that partnership Tiana is here with us back there and so looking forward to continuing uh with that partnership so I will note this is our final renewal and then next year we

will fill out for bits and and do our Fe process um but for now I would recommend approval of this renewal contract so one thing I notic in there was a 4.8% ra increase um and think about the cost of food the grocery store that's probably very reason yeah so um Amber and I work worked with um work with them on that and again one it's a great partnership it works but um you know pulling the the Consumer Price Index in those areas and is right in the middle so yes okay any other discussion I would point out that's two years in a row our contract does say the Consumer Price Index and it's two years in a row that they've actually come in lower than where they could have pushed by our contract so

they have been a very good partner any discussion hearing none I would motion to approve the Food Service management contract I approval second all in favor okay consider resolution for scholarships and awards all right this is a great one with Awards coming up this uh resolution gives us permission to provide students with the funds provided by donors so the 13 scholarships that we will give up this resolution allows us to do that and to create a nice record for Board of accounts recommend approval most very long time but this is new I think last year maybe we was our first year um yeah we bring in Andrew from State B count so he want sub trct every dollar and have a reason to do it so it's a good practice so all right any other

discussion approval second all in favor hi hi employe Chop care rates priority uh gold and blue right excellence and achievement and caring um so we have the opportunity through the fssa employer Child Care Grant to provide child care for our employees um so we need to kind of set our rates and our priority our uh Child Care rates would be $225 per week for infants $190 per week for toddlers And $62.50 per week for preschool but due to receiving the fssa employer Child Care Grant it's recommended that our employees um are able to have their first child free um second child would receive a 50% discount third child would receive a 25% discount and the fourth child with not receive a discount so um you know this it does make work easier for our folks

to attend so I definitely think this is a very important um with space and with an interest um you do need to set kind of a priority of who gets to fill the spots first I would recommend that first come full-time staff um so that would cover all of our our teachers um our front office staff and those people who work full-time and then second would come part-time staff so AIDS and part-time drivers and some of those things we do have full-time bus drivers that would be in the first group and then third would be administrators um so I think that there are reasons that administrators may be able to make use of other advantages out there um but hopefully we'll this is able to continue continue and we'll do this um these discounts think

are very fair and be very well received and this is just an amazing opportunity for us to provide and I think we have we have retained some staff because of this and um one of our new hires with this was able to balance us out with a larger Corporation Indianapolis that you know had different benefits so would recommend that the board approve the rates and the priority for employer child care any discussion do we expect um will the center be for employing children only do we expect that we would at any point open it up if we will below capacity to open it up to the community or is it would be strictly a benefit for in the infant care and the toddler care will have to be employer only and we will be full

that's why I wonder I figured or we were staff based on what our expectations would be yes I think um we will see where this world goes um but yes we and then due to certain the regulations and everything we can only offer it to employees currently so um if we expand it to community then different standards there are preschools open yes I just like to offer payroll deduction on this it's a great question um and not discuss that to be to do it I just think it's conversation that's why we have a board so it's just a really um just so smart to thank you for developing this and having this in place because the all of the economic development so much not all so much of the municipal economic development focuses on um

employees and the employee base and just this puts the corporation in a strong position to retain and attract I think it's a great thing Heidi and Britney and the Wilson Staff have had a lot of conversation tra it's definitely changing the world of Wilson everything we got going on um but I think that while change is hard they think they've all they've done very great of being like this is an amazing opportunity and adjusting so um a lot of people put a lot of time into it and I agree this is something special that we can do anything else of the motion to approve so move second all in favor okay personel in yes um yeah start uh yeah start with retirement so Shelly Drake um 47 years with cill school and 52 years total

of teaching um W yeah so I think as a young principal one of the greatest things I had was that Shelley Drake was the building rep and uh she would come in give me hugs and kind of just so kindly redirect me kind of like she did her High ability students um did she sing to you no but she just turn her head Happ me so um and was always so supportive and but yeah I think so many of our kids come in one of our teachers that we are hiring in the interview asked her you know when did you know you wanted to be a teacher and she mentioned when she had Myer so I think that that's just she been amazing to our school Community she's been an amazing part of our high

ability and gifted program um she's just kind woman who has been an amazing teacher and will be missed but it is time for her to you know make a little bit of time for herself so with complete respect uh recommend the board approve her retirement I make a motion to approve second all in favor all all right um yeah let's do b c d e f g h i together so they are resignations um and I recommend the board approve these resignations I move approval second all in favor had so many LS minute ones added in I make sure okay all right a good one here all right right Adam welsher so um our host principal search included uh 25 applications we brought in eight candidates for interviews we had three rounds in our process

we had nine host staff members involved five principles Britney Brent Kathy Brown joined us um so we went through the process and the committee um is presenting Adam welchire for the board's consideration he's a member of our communi with Southmont graduate he's been working at North mcgomery High School um he has an elementary teaching license began teaching in sixth grade great yeah I I got them all over the place a good way I think good yeah yeah so he had various roles at the middle school then became assistant principal at the high school he presented himself as a very passionate caring and respectable young man very energetic and positive um he communicated his understanding that he need to listen and accept ideas from staff members well yeah just don't listen to your own thing and

that generally works out it's good I've learned under some pretty good people so I uh I'll no one ask questions excellent there yeah see two daughters but they're young yeah permission to go get them I will but Lucy just turned three and we're doing the potty training thing and I think she needs to go more than she does so I'll be right a and then we can go play you guys can come up here you sure all right so have to overstep bals here this is my beautiful wife Jess um this is my cor will you turn around this is my daughter cor she'll be in kindergarten next year can you wave to The Crow and this is my daughter after mentioned daughter Lucy he City you turn around and W these people back here

so I am a very humbled blessed man with this opportunity for Jack have to be getting started so I recommend the board OFW Adam welshire is our next post principal I move approval second [Music] I appreciate i v that I would say this so cor see I want you to look at Mr Kent over there his wife is actually who helped Mommy bring you into the first time it was just by chance and the second time we went there [Music] saying I hope Eric is there and then she just happened to be there and she stayed after her shift and Lucy came into the world so full circle moment and tomorrow and I hose has a little welcome Brent and I will be out of town so we will not be there but now you

go enjoy your family okay I appreciate thank you guys so much all right um thank you sir next yep recommend Eric G for CHS social studies teacher um I has local connection coming back has been teaching at North Montgomery as well so see anybody here he's ceral graduate yeah so um cousins Brad buch and all sorts of connections there so recommend Eric Dan for CHS social space also will'll recommend Elizabeth Aron as a speech language pathologist recommending Lindsay Johnson as Slinger um is H resource teacher so it's excellent to have Lindsay back um Olivia Barnett another Crawford Z graad as a Nicholson elementary teacher recommend Chase McMurray um Hoover Elementary teacher recommend Brian Bartlett is CMS part-time band teacher so bring a part-time band teacher to the middle school to allow our band teacher to

be full-time at the high school our Band program is growing and doing great things so this allows that to continue the Middle School programming um has every sixth grader involved in music so this is a great need and Mr Bart brings great experience and I think um I mean amazing I think he can a be great for a middle school program and B I think he's going to be a great mentor and adviser for Mr tby as well so um and I'm also recommending Susan seore to move I we'll stop there so I recommend these hires as teachers and speech language pathologist so my question Mr Bart what are you going do with all your Southmont here it's stor I'm Mo approval through second all in favor I I uh Q through CC don't know

that we've seen that one before um these are all the added positions to get our oh sorry let's go Q through a are for um Wilson preschool so you can see there's minus Z there we go okay I recommend the hiring of Q through CC um the majority are there for Wilson at Z we have Paige lovess is our new Hoover nurse um and BB Kelly Murphy to take care of the adult education welding program that was mentioned earlier also another teacher hire it's Whitney cosr Uber whose father and mother are are longtime leant teachers um I had the privilege of coaching Whitney in travel basketball and she was in high school but um she's been in Florida and um is it's time for her to come home so that's a great opportunity and it's

wonderful so I recommend hiring a q through CC I'm of approval of these hires in favor right I don't see Andrew this even buiness [Music] manager yeah um so I'll start off in the operations world and specifically with Transportation so um May is a very busy month uh for transportation so we've got 85 trips scheduled so wanted to note the appreciation there for everything that betssy and Herson does uh gave students from events and activities safely so it's a busy end of the year for uh Transportation April 23rd was a stop arm violation survey day for the state so um we had 10 violations on that day which we did submit um to the state so um we currently have five of our buses that have that camera um on them so um 10 in

one B 10 in one b [Music] third year I believe that we've submitted so so yeah 10 in one day oh five buses five buses um admin building progress so if you've been by there or taking a look it looks a little bit different since last time we were together yeah so uh current work is focused on finishing the foundation so um hopefully later this week for the rest of this week uh we'll see some 4ot Foundation walls begin to be formed up and then hopefully bo uh late next week so back filling would would hopefully soon follow but certainly weather dependent um uh as the weather is speaking to us today so um so the goal you know once we get the the foundations up become a little bit less dependent on the weather

and able to to keep moving so but those the next um week or two are the the main focuses and hopefully goals that are that are reached there um technology um just wanted to kind of to note there that we've been working with blo uh marketing on our Athens Virtual Academy of Indiana on the website and the startup uh Doug has done a great job navigating the implementation of these things some of this is is new for us in terms of some of the things we're we're going through but we're getting to learn a lot of things that I think you know we'll we'll be able to implement to Beyond just just our um Virtual Academy so some things that we can begin looking at across all our buildings and and websites so um kind

of with that we're also seeing our um Ava numbers uh with involment um triple in and and pick up some speed uh which is uh a good thing so it's good to see that moving and picking up um really where I would consider probably early in the enrollment game too so we expect that to only continue summer school working through planning there um so we will be running a uh 3-we uh Elementary and secondary um summer term that'll go from June 3rd through June 21st Elementary will be here at Nicholson and uh then the secondary will all be at the high school so I not that's half day so the the instructional time itself runs from 8: to 11:30 and then students can stay for lunch from 11:30 to to 12: so um and lastly

curriculum instruction assessment um we are wrapping up our uh standardized testing so this is the last week for the window of eyer so um buildings have hold in a really really good job and it can be a stressful time but we're really in the last week of just kind of getting the makeups um in in place cre as the window does close this Friday so um again it's a busy time it's a stressful time um and so appreciate what our our building administrators and teachers are doing to get those tests uh completed scores have started to come in they are embargoed um and then a parent notification for reso request will go out next month so with that that is your assant superintend thank you Dr bookart all right my link is now working for

those of you who are trying to um Hoover uh received a certificate of achievement from the idoe for progressing as a family friendly School designation they've had this for four years um and you know it's because they are able to evidence their efforts to engage famili students and staff in the administration and fostering strong family school Partnerships um they have several events and it also again is Marcy some of her staff just do a great job of bringing recognition to Hoover um you know we do a lot of great things but sometimes you just got to take that extra effort to make sure that everybody notices and she they have done a great job of that so it's wonderful to have the educational leadership world uh completed the high ability um program evaluation with our

broad based committee um and submitted our grant um our grant availability was up this year so um using it for professional development of teachers and staff were um and to take care of our testing that we use for identification um in the personnel management World um we're working on our staffing and we're working through the three major factors of SRA funds Co money coming to an end our student enrollment is has come down gradually since about 2019 um so that's created some issues that we have to address and then our fund balances are place where we don't have as much wiggel room as we've had over the last few years so um those things were're working through I did have Bron I and Andrew met with Steve and Monty and went over some things we've

had discussions with teachers and with admin kabet and I we have a good plan for next year to a add in certain places and to you know reduce in certain places um basically really just looking at where the student need is at where student numbers are at um it's it's one of those things before you're a superintendent you're like oh you just do this this and this then you know when you're working it is good um with people and their lives it's a little different so um but currently we've been able to to find a place for everyone we got a few pieces we're working around hopefully one of these grants will take care of the remaining um areas of uncertainty um and the organizational management um last month you approved application for a common

School fund loan to take care of Wilson um and to take care some of those needs um we did not we were not able to we submitted the application and we're quickly denied um the fact that we do not have that we only have preschool there um does not allow us to use the common School fund loan um so what that means is that next month we will come back and um look at a bond to take care of some of these needs and other facility needs um we are at a point where our tax rate is going to come down and so we can join right in that so we'll both be able to say we are bringing our tax rate down and addressing facilities but we will show you those things next month

which also means that our the extra board meeting we had set for May 13th is not needed um celebrations you know please take time look at the Oracle it's just it's amazing it truly is outstanding what all we have going on with our students in our staff um some heading pag yeah yes and yeah and the buildings do a great job of getting that information and then Christie Strickland just does phenomenal things with it and then I go to her and I'm like hey I'd really like to move this here and this here and she does it while she's taking care of everything up front um you know and we do all these other marketing things maybe someday that's what she can do for us so um but not what have and figure everything else

out okay um we did get our award for the 2023 best overall campaign Award of Merit for from the mcgomery county United Way so um for our employee range I think we're in the 51 to 299 category um so we had 127 per increase in participation in our Muffy giving the old Muffy giving United Way um that was in a 64% participation in staff um we're second in total employee giving and total campaign so we got a little ways to go there but just again we're serving we're giving back to our community um because again though as much as we raise to give to the United wayag they still we it's still unbalanced of what we received from them so they help us at Wilson they help us with K Camp um they take care
