fresh off the press senator niemeyer says he's uh sends his congratulations but he couldn't make it they just got out of session at four o'clock and if you know traveling to indianapolis it's like two hours and 15 minutes no stopping 80 miles an hour not that i would do that but so let me read this to you this is house concurrent resolution number 31 introduced by representatives julie oltof and mike ellsworth sponsored by senators eddie melton and rick niemeyer adopted by voice vote on march 18 2021 during the first regular session of the 122nd general assembly a house concurrent resolution congratulating crown point high school's jesse mendes on his third state wrestling championship that's quite an achievement whereas jesse mendes won his third consecutive state wrestling championship on february 20th 2021 whereas jesse mendes finished
his junior year wrestling season undefeated with a score of 34-0 whereas jesse mendes became the 39th wrestler in indiana's history to bring home three state titles whereas crown point high school boasts 14 individual state championships since 1955 whereas coach brandon loreck led the entire wrestling team to success while safely navigating the covet 19 pandemic and whereas jesse jesse mendez's hard work and determination continue to bring success and pride to the crown point community therefore be it resolved by the house of representatives of the general assembly of the state of indiana with the senate concurring that the indiana general assembly congratulates jesse mendes on his 2021 state wrestling championship win now this will go into the state records so your name is held right there as of today because it passed the senate i have copies
for you like and your coach if you could give it to your coach that would be great and i'll give you the original congratulations so much we're proud of you i think we want to get a picture of both of you while we're doing that i think we would be remiss if we didn't also acknowledge that jesse is the number one ranked wrestler in the country in his white class it makes it a lot easier to keep working hard and you know keep striving for the state titles when we know you have a community behind us supporting what we're doing i mean hopefully we'll be back with a full team with blue rings we just like to thank you guys [Applause] families thank you just giving everybody a minute to settle in all right let's
move to item three patrons comments uh this evening pages comments we have uh we do have christian washington uh written in to speak mr washington i believe you were given a little bit of preview of the guidelines correct please step forward state your name and address and uh you know the mic is yours welcome thank you very much my name is christian washington 8810 doubletree drive north is my address crown point indiana uh so good evening to the school board school officials as well as parents and fellow community members i've been a part of the crown point community it's okay about let this down okay all right that's good i've been part of the crown point community for the past seven years or so my wife and three children all school-aged and for the most
part it's been a great experience we come here from st louis missouri and uh it's been a a really really cool experience it took us a second to settle in uh but for the most part we were able to find a really cool network and support system as we transitioned here i will say this is that we have come across some things that have rattled our family just a little bit we have seen some racial inequality uh as well as some some racial concerns um and at first i i looked at it and i saw it as isolated in incidents and events but the more and more came it seemed to be systematic and inherent to the community it's tough when you have a five-year-old that comes home and says dad mom someone told me
that my skin looks like boo-boo and i probably smell like it too you can imagine you know that look in their face and now you have to tell that innocent child about society and the things that they'll come across for the rest of their lives it's kind of difficult when you have a teenager and they come home and they're angry and frustrated because they have people around them that will make racially driven remarks my son there was one incident where he was uh called a and the the young man would blast the black people song that's riddled with stereotypes and uh biases and he had to keep his cool uh and he didn't do too well with keeping this cool uh but it's tough to address those situations with a teenager i guess the the
where the rubber hit the road for us is when i overheard a conversation with my son and his friend that happened to be african-american and they were totally frustrated because they had to deal with the racial remarks and it was no jokes that they had to deal with from day to day and uh and they got tired of being that voice of reason they got tired of being that voice saying hey it's a different way that we can approach this um and it was super frustrating so from that standpoint i stood back and said something has to change enough is is truly enough so before we move to crown point i'll be very honest i spoke with friends and you know they advised us not to move to crown point crown point if you don't
know is not considered to be a minority friendly community but my wife and our family we're always up to the challenge and we believe wherever we go we can make a difference so i'm here to say that i'm here to stay and i'm ready to meet this head on so i'm reaching out to the school board i'm reaching out to the administrators i'm reaching out to the community and say can we come together and make a change can we do something to open up the lines of communication can we have the tough conversations and get to the very root of things let's stop treating the symptoms and get to the very base of things and make a change in our community because i love crown point uh for the reasons that we saw tonight man
these students are so amazing and it's a product of the community that we have so i believe if we fix this facet of our community it will be attracting the diversity the prestige and the people that we need to in order to see this happen from generation to generation so again i'll shut up and i'll sit down but i'll post the question uh what do we do next because it's time for change thank you man thank you thank you mr washington as you know the the comments are meant to be a comment this evening i just want to say appreciate your concerns and your thoughts and the angles that they come from and hopefully we couldn't work together in the future we can move forward to the consent agenda uh item 4.01 is a regular
business meeting of board of school trustees held in public i'm sorry i'm going to hand this over to dr terrell the consent agenda hand it over to dr terrell there we go thank you for your consideration this evening we have 4.01 the minutes from our meetings we have 4.02 the south lake career cooperative agreement 4.03 the approval to apply for grants for our ap exams for our students 4.04 donation for the industrial tech department at the high school 4.05 another purchase for the music program at our high school 4.06 the athletic booster donation for football uniforms 4.07 the personnel agenda and then 4.08 the voucher checks as listed this evening thank you thank you dr terrell for the recommendation to approve the consent agenda as presented we have a motion to approve so moved second
moved by mr hoffman second by mr angel do you have any questions or comments for dr terrell on the consent agenda one question todd on the grant for the ap exams is that a sufficient amount of money i am going to defer to mr hardiman he's wanting to push your button i was ready when it was my turn to press the button supposed to ask me a question ahead of time now we've this amount we've uh we've applied for and received uh for the last three years i believe and so uh the allocation has uh has seemed to have met the need they've not increased it and that's the only thing i can base it on um so i will pose the question though to see if there's i'm not sure how many applicants that
are submitted for this and if all of them do receive a portion of the funds or all of the funds if there if there's an additional lead please let your need please let me know okay thank you your questions or comments for dr terrell if not all those in favor signify by saying aye aye opposed emotion carries five zero thank you dr terrell and uh action items this evening 5.01 resolution number 795 opposing the hb1005 education savings accounts esa's and voucher expansion dr terrell so just to give you all a little bit of background and for those who are in the audience or watching online so the resolution we bring to you tonight is resolution 795. i'm not going to read it for you it is posted on our website but basically just brings to
light that we are joining several other school boards and school corporations not in our just only in our county but also in our state letting know letting the legislators know that we do not approve of the expansion of school vouchers and then also the education savings accounts and a little bit more background for you when this first came up we talked about it tom i think you brought it back in from the school board association meeting and at that point in time i then contacted all of the other superintendents throughout our county and asked them if they would be willing to join with us many of them had passed similar resolutions already so all of them have agreed and tomorrow morning brooke allen our director of communications will be putting out a press release that
indicates that of the all 15 school districts who have elected school boards and i think that's an important piece there the elected school boards have joined us in opposing this bill putting it out there that we do not support what they are looking at doing right now as far as the budget goes with expanding the voucher dollars and then also adding an education savings account so what we're asking for tonight is for you guys to pass this as a sign to our community to our county and to our state that we are joining so many others uh in opposition to this as well thank you dr terrell you've heard the recommendation to approve the resolution 795 which is opposing esa's and voucher expansion house bill we have a motion to approve so moved second i
said moved by mr angel in second by mr hoffman we probably should have brought this up while our state representative was there we uh we'd had that conversation and she had to get back to indy tonight so this is for discussion so i would just like to say i vehemently oppose any of this voucher that's hurting the public education in the state of indiana so i'll make sure that's noted for the benefit of the public one of the things we're talking about in these educational savings accounts is giving money to parents to administer however they see fit whether or not their child gets an education there's no accountability of the funds there's no accountability of the education and they're just handing out this money and they what's the what's the top dollar amount the expansion
threshold income threshold for voucher dollars would go uh from a family it would expand it by uh from 150 to 300 percent so a family of five could have an annual income of 170 000 and qualify for voucher dollars to go to a private school and again our concern with that is um they're going to schools that don't have the same accountability standards that we have the same requirements that we have to meet and the transparency just simply isn't there i i shared with todd something that we had gotten from the indiana school boards association and as part of this publicity push to oppose this i had a picture about the regulations for indiana schools and the book is about inch instant a quarter thick or inch and a half thick and for private schools
it's 50 pages so that's that shows you graphically kind of the difference in what's going on the other thing that i would bring up because so many school boards and school corporations are speaking out on this issue um what has happened most recently now is the house and senate have decided to move this out of house bill 1005 and senate bill 413. and move it right into house bill 1001 which is the state budget which is like a 2 to 300 page document and they're going to put this in and then just slip it in that way they don't have to have individual hearings on this matter so it's almost like they saw all of this pushback so rather than deal with the pushback and have the conversations they've now slid it into the back
of a much larger bill and my concern and i shared this with brian we were talking texting back and forth today a little bit when you look at the state budget it looks really good we've got low taxes the forecast for the budget looks really good the what we're gaining as a state and coming in looks really good and so of course the budget's going to pass we're in a really good spot the key though is that we're slipping this in rather than having the difficult conversations about the true reasons behind what's happening and how we can come alongside and and fix it with them so that's the concerning part every professional organization from school boards to superintendents to urban to suburban to rural schools have all joined together to iasbo our business association leaders
have all joined together saying that they don't agree with this and they'd like to have conversations and at this point in time that's just being shut down and and they're going to move through it and actually end the session early as opposed to going through it this way any other questions or comments i do if i can figure out oh i figured how to get the button on all right um i i just want to you know on the record just agree with all the comments here i think it's well stated and in addition that you know one of my concerns is just the funding to cut public spending on education and simply shift it to the vouchers from minneapolis when they really have no idea what's going on in the local school corporations cannot
be in the best interests of our school corporations if i recall a few years ago our legislature had cut our funding and indicated that we should move to referendums and we should be more locally governed just eight years later to cut us again after we go and ask taxpayers to help fund our school corporations and i so one of my largest concerns that wasn't stated previously is that you know it's just a funding aspect of it and i agree with what dr terrell said which is um they were not willing to have the difficult conversation take a public vote and or raise taxes and this was done to avoid that and so it's going to put pressure on the local school corporations throughout the state and i just don't think that's proper governance you know
comments yeah i mean i that's very disappointing what you just shared with us that they uh you know apparently there's room for pork at any level whether it's national or state to just kind of slide things in and avoid um facing issues head-on so disappointed to hear that but i am i did want to say uh dr terrell that i'm i was impressed with your leadership through the process and working with the surrounding school corporations to kind of build that alliance against this bill so wanted to thank you for that and i i'd be remiss if i didn't thank our superintendents and fellow school boards for their willingness to join alongside of us and uh make this push so they actually were like yes how soon can we do it yeah so good all those
in favor signify by saying aye all right opposed that motion carries five zero thank you dr terrell and move to 5.02 is approval to accept funds from the blackbaud giving fund is that correct blackbaud giving fun mr hardman thank you mr president i learned quickly [Laughter] we have a donor from uh wheeler braider uh i believe this no marathon petroleum company uh that uses the blackbaud giving fund as a vehicle to donate funds to colonel wheeler middle school they have allocated or donated 74.50 uh on december 3rd 2020 and also 65 on april or august 18 2020 for a total of 139.50 we're seeking your uh approval to receive uh the funds in the amount of 139.50 this evening from the marathon petroleum company through the blackbaud giving fund thank you mr hartman you heard
the recommendation to prove to accept 139.50 from the blackbaud giving fund on behalf of the marathon patrolling company for colonel john wheeler middle school we have a motion to approve so moved uh moved by mr hoffman and second by mr smith any questions or comments for mr hartman if not all those in favor signify by saying aye aye opposed vote carries 5-0 thank you mr hartman we moved to 5.03 is the new crown point city school corporation website design agreement miss allen thank you thank you good evening i'm bringing a recommendation to you this evening to develop a new corporation website which is very exciting and analyzing our current site and our needs we determined that going with a new vendor would be the correct choice this new website will have completely different look which
i think is great it'll be mobile responsive ada compliant new training for our staff as well as enhanced customer service compared to our current vendor i'm seeking approval this evening for the contract with final site the amount of 88 800 over the course of the next five years uh thank you very much for the recommendation approve the contract with final site for retroactive through the data and contract signature to build a new corporation website and a five-year hosting agreement in the amount of eighty-eight thousand dollars eighty-eight thousand eight hundred dollars do we have a motion to approve so moved second i'm gonna turn my mic on for that second journal published by mr angel and second by mr babjack questions or comments from miss allen long overdue yeah i i think some may look at
that in 88 000 but i just want to um contribute a little bit i know about this that i think it sounds very reasonable actually i i think that's a that could be a i don't know for for anyone not aware i think it could be a sticker shock number but i would like to just add that i i think it sounds fair for um for hosting for five years but with that said do you have any idea what our fee may be right now on an annual basis okay i didn't got it i would have thought it was built on uh do it yourself any other comments david the sticker shock was when my hair broke and her salaries this is peanuts compared to that we got off cheap okay we don't have any
other questions or comments it's a move to vote i was in favor signified by saying aye aye aye opposed motion carries 5-0 it's pretty exciting thank you miss allen 5.04 policy revisions and additions got the second reading and adoption mr akiva thank you mr president board members follow up from february's meeting again we are presenting uh from our partner neola who we utilize to keep our board policies up to date we have presented for you this evening our updates which are just revisions and keeping us in code with state policy the policies presented here are from volume 33 number one and what we are recommending this evening is uh in the end approval so what i'd like to request is a waving of the second reading and moving to the approval for these policy updates
volume 33 number one thank you mr q for the recommendation to prove to waive the reading of the policies in adoption by title only do we have emotion move to approve and wave the reading although we would certainly like to hear hardly read all almost and move by mr hopkins second second by mr angel i believe um you have questions or comments about uh only one comment and that is and we've had some very preliminary discussion about this before but i think we need to evaluate and consider a move to the indiana school boards association and have our policies more tailored to our our needs versus an adoption of neola that just cranks these things out for all the states so and we point in the future thank you we appreciate that and actually we
are looking at that possibility we're kind of letting the dust settle on several other things that we've got going right now but that is in that is the plan and in the process that we'll be bringing to you within the next several months you know comments if not all those in favor signify by saying aye aye aye opposed welcome carries 5-0 thank you mr akiwa and we move to information items for this evening we have superintendent discussion discussion groups um do you have anybody have anything to report um hey mr hoffman i know you've been out of town um crown point uh rdc is pretty much business as usual nothing nothing real major but still handing out funds for facade improvements and street repairs and still working on the kind of a wall honoring jerry
ross over by the tennis courts on north street and some things like that yeah they're working on little league fields so money money continues to get put back into the community about uh chief academic officer mr hartman this evening i wanted to just give you an update on our significant and i think it was illustrated this evening this significant need that we have to look at an inclusive culture in the school corporation we are we are moving forward with a an organization uh that is uh works with school districts uh within uh the united states and abroad in 50 different countries and so at some point in the future we'll be bringing to you a contract with this organization and it's a it's an area as was noted in our audit for inclusion that we
needed to uh we need to address some situations even though it stems from special education we know that it's much broader than that and hopefully this will be a step that we will be able to take to be a more inclusive school corporation and and community thank you thank you mr chairman you know the director of elementary education ms ramirez thank you mr president and board members i would just like to follow up from our february meeting to share that we have had a successful kindergarten pre-registration moving it to an online platform that took a lot of work from chantal peers to our office staff in the buildings and we are very excited about welcoming the future class of 2034 so um lo and behold they are going to be registered and will be able
to start in the fall so we are very happy to hear that also happy to celebrate that last week concluded our i read three windows this was one of our first high stakes tests that was administered and really again another hands-on effort from everyone from central office to building principals teachers to our food our cafeteria staff to our transportation for making sure that all of our students including our distance learners were able to come in to take this test that must be or this assessment that must be done in person we had nearly perfect attendance from all of our distance learners which is really encouraging and really sets the table for then our move into ilearn i read three scores will be um the preliminary kind of unofficial scores will be released tomorrow so we're
very excited that given kind of the landscape of which we are in that we were able to have a successful assessment administration and um our full participation of students both distance learning and in person and lastly i would like to thank our elementary schools for their focus on disabilities awareness month they have really done yet again and continue to do a great job of raising awareness and celebrating inclusion and you can see the character development that is happening with our youngest students and this is really important work needed work and it's really a true testament to our building's desire to drive inclusion to do better as we know better and to continuously move forward to make sure that all feel included and celebrated if there are no questions that is it thank you mr ramirez
now chief human resource officer mr akiwa yes thank you mr president i'm just two items to re report on one is staffing you know as we continue with our analysis of rollup for next year um i just need to take a moment to thank all of our building principals mr hardman mr g infermia and mrs ramirez and mrs pasquez for assistance and helping us frame up you know what our needs are what our targets are so we can begin our interviewing process so we're we're right now identifying targets uh to interview as we return from spring break so it's going to be very active april uh here as we position ourselves for staffing for the 21 22 school year uh and i'd be remiss if i didn't thank also here uh dr terrell and uh
katie dowling for their assistance as well because these budget conversations are difficult um and you know enrollment's been a little bit elusive you know sabrina was there talking about k roundup and and k registration and uh they kind of came to the table here a little late but we're in a good position right now so um very encouraging to have healthy enrollment for next year at least at this juncture so i thought i would share that update with you um one final update and just a a thank you uh goes to our director of transportation and and sometimes these um situations really go unseen uh but karen toth is phenomenal for these existential changes she has to make in particular with kovid we've had a number of families um become displaced become homeless have to
go move away from their for their homes for you know unforeseen reasons and unpredictable reasons and she has done a phenomenal job working with other school corporations to get these children bused to their schools even if they are displaced outside of our district which mckinney vento you know requires that we work with other school corporations to keep that home school sound i just have to take a minute to just thank uh publicly karen toth for her wonderful efforts supporting uh all the fluid situations out there in our school corporation thank you thank you mr aquila so that's funny you know it's happened to all of us at some point you know you say or do something and you get a reaction you're like what did i do wrong i realized when i went to mr
akiba so uh thank you dr chill i forgot somebody director of secondary education mr g and fermi thank you mr president um i just did a few just informational items we do have another state champion from crown point high school i want to make you aware of that our latin club once again went down to the indiana junior classical league state convention and brought back a state championship i'm sure we'll have those students here and recognize them shortly but the thank you to mr walker miss weibrick and miss tereshevitz the sponsors um that's just kind of an annual event you know they go down there and do well also our academic super bowl team brought home a couple of first place victories uh lowell invitational they bested 17 teams and then uh the following week
followed up winning the deck invitational first places in team titles including english science arts and math mr lambersy is gearing up to go down to state where they did a really fabulous job in the past and it's just good to see that our teams are out there being able to compete in these things whether it's blended virtual and in person but last year a lot of this was not accomplished and our kids missed out so it's good to see them having those opportunities do want to make sure you're aware that the spring musical the show will go on we will reschedule that to april 8th 9th 10th and 11th 7 pm showings in april 10th and 11th of for matinees big thank you to mr degenhardt the families of the cast and crew for for
just kind of hanging in there we know last year that that was pulled the rug was pulled out the day they were going to go that was when everything shut down so excited to see they're going to finally get their opportunity to get that spring musical off and it's high school musical this year so that'll be fun and then finally this is just interesting to me the taft 8th grade girls basketball team won the conference title so hey maybe as we know success breeds more success throughout there so maybe in a few years they'll be up here in that big trophy as well so there any questions the secondary end of things isn't uh our primary competition for the latin group brownsburg that's correct thank you mr gene fermi and we can go to chief
financial officer ms dolly thank you mr president um in case the board wasn't aware there was a petition for a variance for apartments over by beacon hill over by striken van till the broadway at 109th corridor about a month ago now i think it was actually your last meeting um we were fortunate that the bza was not in favor of this and gave an unfavorable recommendation to the city council who also would have not supported it had the petitioner not removed it from the agenda for consideration that's a positive for us 250 apartments and that space is diff would be difficult to manage from um an enrollment and a transportation about a zillion other but the community was very much against it as well so just as an fyi as of right now that's not
an issue but we'll keep our eye on it um the most recent extension of cares act 3 monies included an extension of meal support so through september 30th we'll be able to continue to provide free breakfast and lunch to all of our students that will include meals throughout the summer for pickup and mrs maloney will be coordinating with the community health network with miss bonnie meyer to coordinate so buddy bags can distribute at the same time to assist get pushing food out within the community so people have proper access lastly a preview for april you will see the first set of resolutions to start the bond process so we had no remonstrators against our issue when it was put out there so now we'll start the process of issuing the approvals and the things that
the board needs to do procedurally to move forward so we'll start with that in april finish up in may thank you mister i mentioned karezak three uh just a maybe a personal request or but as things come come forward there um if you wouldn't mind sharing with us it'd be appreciated some of the and we see the information in the news but if there's something particular pertaining to crown point and maybe even next board meaning planning an update of you know the funds that are you know potentially coming um or what we may be eligible for i don't know if i'm saying that properly but just you know keeping us in the loop there uh thank you appreciate it go to uh superintendent of schools dr todd terrell thank you i want to begin by
thanking mr washington for being here tonight and his comments are heard and you know one of the things as we get ready to use we talked about strategic planning and what we're looking at with our district as we continue to grow as mr hardman mentioned with inclusion and looking at that full continuum of services for our kids we also know that this is a crucial piece that we need to address as well and we'll be working through that with strategic planning so mr washington we hope that we can count on you to have some help with this and appreciate your willingness to do so also kind of interesting the way things work out this is also a movement right now amongst the superintendents of lake county that we're all getting ready to begin with the
direction of dr tony lux who you know well and spent a lot of time in maryville schools as well has really kind of taken this on as kind of his retirement project if you will and we're working together right now actually just late last week i received the book that we're all going to be using all of the superintendents in lake county going through a book study together looking at our cultural diversity and how do we increase or help move along that inclusion process to where everybody feels welcome and that we can continue to provide services and meet the needs that we need to there so timely comments this evening and we look forward to being able to address some of those issues as we move forward next week spring break you know when you
look back at where we were when we started this thing in august as was mentioned tonight with some of the athletic teams that were here uh you know there were times we wondered what it would look like to even get to this point and we're rounding that corner and getting ready to head down the home stretch so with that we're looking at end of year activities trying to make those uh as appropriate as possible working through the guidelines that are coming from our state house from the governor's office also from the health departments really want to thank the patients and the support of our parents and our students and let me go back in students you know i know as parents they've had to deal with having kids at home but when you stop and
think about the things that we ask our kids to do and the changes that they've been uh making along the way also i just appreciate the approach that our administrators our teachers and staff have had throughout this whole thing i know denise jansen's here with us representing our teachers union tonight you know there's a lot of other districts where it was constant pushback from the teachers and staff members about what do we need to do to get our kids in with denise's leadership and partnership you know we really appreciate the approach that our teachers took and that was yes there are concerns yes there are things that we need to talk through and figure out but it was that let's talk through and figure out so we really appreciate where they are and uh the
way that they've handled this entire thing so just as we look forward to the spring coming you know hopefully things will continue on that uptick and we'll be able to our plan is right now for the 21 20 school two school year that we will be in person full in person back at normal pace and ready to go in august so summer schools will help us ramp up with that with being in person and really put us in a good position and a good place to move forward next year so thank you guys for the way you've allowed us to work through this your continual support and input as well and we appreciate that thank you todd i have a question yep um since they haven't been around for a while what what is the
status of teacher vaccinations in indiana so right now as of last week is when it was opened up for all teachers to be on the list to have access to the vaccination the key was it wasn't always available and so being on the approved list to get them is one thing having uh places within our our community where that can actually happen was the challenge now at this point in time mr aquila you want to give us kind of an update of where we are yeah currently right now um other taxes i think today in general the population i think we're fourth 20 40 and above double check but i do believe in this quarter just in general um you know going and more people rush just the general public to get vaccinated on addition
to our staff hopefully the supply can be there for us so that we were able to do this i asked that question i shared with todd the indiana school boards association periodically has they what they call a president's round table and it's a it's a online conversation with any board presidents who wish to participate and because of my role on the on the board of directors i lead those conversations and one school corporation indicated that they were able to partner with a local i believe it was a walmart and arranged for their teachers to go to that walmart to get their vaccinations unfortunately we don't have a walmart and there's within our school district or other big organization who's able to provide those vaccinations but those things are happening i would say that fortunately the
other school districts within our county who have been able to host those maryville and then who was the other one we just had i think there's about a field house but it was maryville and then was it lake uh no new tech yeah so they hosted a large scale and but they gave us that information before it went public as well so we were able to share that out uh mr kiewa shared that out with our staff members as well to try and get them on the list so we try to whenever we find out about those opportunities we try to get that information out as quickly as we can our nurses have been amazing and how they've worked with getting the information and facilitating that too thanks to everybody involved in that okay thank
you dr terrell and then uh other business of the board of school trustees does anybody have any anything you'd like to discuss this evening mr smith oh there we go jeez i'll get it um just i just want to point out that uh in the consent agenda we didn't get a chance to speak about it but i think to shed public light on it that the board that is part of the agenda the board in that that was approved is the board members themselves individually are able to be offered health insurance now and i just want to make sure that we shed light to that that it's not shoved through in a consent agenda the reason for that is that um you know i want to make clear that people understand the general public knows
that the families are not part of that plan it's for the individual board members as part of their service and i just want to thank the administration and dr terrell for looking into what other school corporations are doing making sure we're staying competitive making sure that individuals are interested in running for school board that we get the best candidates possible and as we all know and the public generally knows that health care costs right now and to be competitive out in the private market is very very expensive so this provides an opportunity for several board members and i just want to say uh thank you and be transparent to the public and that was approved today and i think it's the right thing to do whether i'm here sitting here now or four years from
now whoever it is i still think that's the right thing to do and i just think it needs to be stated so along those same lines i think it's real important to point out that we're we have a really healthy insurance fund right now in plan and so we're in a really good place with that and being able to provide additional employee groups with insurance not just the board but other groups as well this year and so you know it's just about treating our people right and providing opportunities for them any other business uh to discuss i got something else um i too just want to say thank you to mr washington i know it's not necessarily business but he and i have been longtime friends i coach his son in football and he's just
a great family great people and i just hate hearing the stories that you shared today and i just you know i know dr terrell recognized that and you and i have had discussions about this and and uh i just want to thank you for being here it takes some courage and boldness to to express that but you know conversation has to start and it has to start in the public and i appreciate you being here my friend thank you mr smith both points well said thank you anything else to uh discuss if not we'll move to uh four statements of appreciation and recognition and uh how about we start back down there with you mr smith anything to uh i'm getting better with the switch so that's helpful um yeah i i want to apologize
for everybody being a few minutes late tonight but uh tonight we started a flag football league over the first inaugural season through the crown point junior bulldogs and i know everybody's saying what's have to do with anything coach buzz has been tremendous in supporting our youth football program and we have seen a significant difference already i think we have over 60 football players out there volunteering their time helping to coach the youth football program coming around refereeing in the games um and so i think we got 240 kids sign up in the inaugural season for flag football in the spring over there so that's a lot uh for something we threw together in a short period of time and i'm not sure uh this would be a success without just coach buzz's support so i
want to recognize him and the difference he's making in our community not only just in our program but our community already and his staff and those around there that they're willing to get involved and engage so we've always felt that you know our schools our community we want them involved in the community we want to make a difference our community and impact our community and uh he's taking those steps right away so excited for that and want to thank you mr baby uh brooke is it safe to say that you kind of had a hand in the recent upgrades i've seen on facebook posts by the individual schools and okay so that's good because i wrote your name down on this piece of paper i wanted to make sure that you were the right person
but i figured it was i've i've just noticed a general um i guess improvement in quality of the post and some very good information posted about the individual schools you know everybody's got their each school has their own facebook page i don't know if they used to always have one okay i didn't that's good because i never noticed anything but i'm starting to see some really cool stories now and i think those play out really well and people are sharing them and and recognizing and noticing them so thank you for that that's that's another thing that has been long needed here so appreciate that i don't have any specific individuals other than everybody in this room one of the most difficult things that two things that i've been involved in in my years on this
board one was moving a former superintendent out and selecting a new one and after we had made the decision to hire dr terrell i had a lot of nights where i woke up in cold sweats thinking did i make the right choice thanks that was yesterday not not because of you but just because of the pressure the enormity of that decision well we made the right decision and what i am feeling and i've expressed this entire number of times but i know mr hardman was around when i first came on the school board but i think we're returning to a camaraderie an atmosphere a team effort that existed during my first term on the crown point school board and it's very exciting to me it's got to be very exciting for the people working for
us and for the community and i just see all sorts of positive things happening even even in the niola to know that there's conversations on going there that was something that was brought up a number of times and just dismissed and so it's it's good to know that we've got a lot of things happening i'm getting a lot of positive feedback uh we had an incident at the high school and because of the manner in which it was handled positive manner in which it was handled i i called the the principal and he says tom something wrong and i said no i just wanted to call and tell you what a great job you're doing appreciate the effort that you're making to handle things like this and then in that conversation he thanked me and
the board for hiring dr terrell now the other thing that i wanted to pass on was it was very encouraging i haven't been around the board many years i've got friends on a lot of other school boards and i got a text message from from one of my other school board friends congratulating us on our basketball championship and saying it's always nice to keep that trophy in the region so good things thank you mr hoffman mr angel look at that first try um i would just like to a lot of the individuals that are probably watching online and so forth uh don't always take into account what's what and how decisions are determined and there's a lot of work that goes behind the scenes whether or not it's a grant that we need to file
for or a 200 and some million dollar project that we need to file paperwork get bonds approved to make sure that our students are being educated to the fullest and best needs and i think and i want to make sure no one goes under appreciated that includes our cabinet here dr terrell and everybody else underneath including our support staff and all those individuals you know sometimes we just take for granted of how fortunate we are being in the financial situation we're in here at crown point that you're able to do a project without any tax increase and be able to do what's right and not everybody agrees with every decision you're going to make you need to know that ahead of time but when you keep in mind that the decisions we're making are what's
best interest for the students the taxpayers and all those involved it's nice to sit up here and smile and make a few cracks during a meeting because i think what's being done is right and with what mr washington sometimes not everything is being done right so when those issues are brought up you address them you look in the mirror and you make the next next decisions to improve where you might be lacking so uh no real individual ones but to all of you that are facing me here tonight those that might not be here and dr terrell i do greatly appreciate is i know the rest when we have conversations it's hey not one of us might agree on everything but when you keep that in the back your mind that are we doing what's
right for our kids a lot of the decisions are easy and we move forward with that and that in mind so that's my legendary jack too mr angel does not have the game pulled up on his laptop for those wondering well you can't see everything thank you mr angel you know and to keep it short myself uh to echo part of what you just said i think in a year like you said going back to august the year that we've had it's not a normal year it's not an easy year the kova distractions the culvert obstacles it would have been really easy as a corporation to say okay pause we're going to fight all these other challenges and we'll pick up everything else where it may have left off you know in march of 2020
but and almost the exact it's pretty exciting to see with everything that's taking place in the last nine months what could happen in a more you know normal knock on wood year so you know kudos to everybody for continue to move forward and and and we all know how much how many extra hours you know our nurses and administrators and teachers and the cabinet has put into to make that happen so it's appreciated and uh echoing the comments of the others uh thank you um would anybody else like to add any comments before we look for a motion to adjourn if not we have a motion to adjourn second race by mr hoffman with a motion to mr angel for just a second all those in favor signify by saying aye aye these new microphones
are like you
