001Any patrons in service this evening? All right, we've got uh approval of the minutes. Any questions or comments on last month's minutes? If not, need a motion to approve. I make a motion we approve the minutes as presented. I have a motion, do I have a second? Second. All those in favor say I. I. I. Opposed? Motion had a chance to look over the treasurer's report. Any questions or comments? None. Need a motion to approve. I make a motion to approve. I have a motion, do I have a second? I'll second. All those in favor say I. I. Opposed? All right, I now turn the meeting over to Dr. Young. Thank you, Mr. President. So, the first of all this evening, uh we have uh consideration for proposals of the custodial services. Uh if you
002remember correctly, we began this process uh due to Senate Bill Act number one that uh reduced uh property taxes coming from our constituents. Um we looked at uh outsourcing because mainly we had had a good um experience with Aramark, who provides our food services. And so, we thought that this could be a possibility to reduce some cost. Uh we received three proposals. Um those three companies that we received proposals from were uh the Perfection Group, the EMS Group, and Vonachen. Um we opened those um proposals, and Mr. the President was with us that day um in a public forum, and um read those um proposals out loud and after going through those proposals as well as looking at what we are currently spending on our custodians, um Mr. President, I would make the recommendation that
003we reject these proposals and move forward with negotiations with the International Brotherhood of United Mine Workers of America for a custodial contract. Great. That's my recommendation, Mr. President. Any questions? And now I need a motion to approve that. I move to approve Mr. Gavin's recommendation. I'll make that motion. I have a motion. Do I have a second? I second. All those in favor say "Aye." Aye. Opposed? Carries. Thank you, gentlemen. Appreciate all your support and everything and you guys coming out. So, uh Next up this evening, we have a quote for $46,500 to replace um locker room doors on our boys' locker rooms. Um if you remember correctly, you um approved a quote for our school safety security grant last month and that quote actually came in less um than we expected and we received
00492,500 in that grant. And so, um I contacted um Stefano Rue as well as the uh company Thomas Commercial Glass um to get another quote on these two doors to to spend the remainder of the uh school security grant and then also the some of the remainder will come out the operations fund. Um so, you have that quote. Um I need a motion to approve um the replacement of the locker room boys' locker room doors for the cost of $46,500. Do I have a motion? I'll make the motion. Okay, I've got a motion. Do I have a second? >> I'll second. I've got a motion second. Any further discussion? All in favor signify by saying "Aye." Aye. Opposed the same. Okay, it got five to zero. Next up this evening, uh uh Mrs. Lee um
005brought um got three quotes for the replacement of another oven um in the kitchen. Um she would recommend um purchasing the same oven that we got last time at the cost of $5,999. Um and once again, she's I she's had very good success with this oven and um she feels like it'd be easier just to have all the same ovens Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Um I think last time and I'd have to check, but I think we may have paid out of the kitchen or we may have split it. So, a lot of times we'll split stuff. So. If we do pay for it out of any of ours, it would come out of operations funds. Okay. Um I need a motion to approve the purchase of that oven.
006I make the motion to approve it. Okay, I have a motion. Do I have a second? I'll second. I have a motion and a second. Any further discussion? All those in favor signify by saying I. And opposed the same? Okay, that carries and the board I will update you guys where we're buying it from. Next up this evening, um we were very fortunate to receive a grant from the Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Southwestern Indiana in the amount of $150,000 to fund a brand new preschool playground. Um this preschool playground will go in the courtyard at Woodlawn Memorial Primary School. Um and so, uh we worked with Kaplan Playgrounds who specializes in preschool. Um this is who we also bought our furniture from last year and um they designed they also work with Building Blocks who
007we're working with overseas uh the preschool program in the area. Um but anyway, we worked with them to come up with a quote. Um and so, this evening we're bringing that quote to you. Um we're at a cost of $149,061.95. Once again, this will be paid from the grant by Toyota Motor Motor Manufacturing. Um so, I need a motion >> They're going to install there install Yes, they're installing it and everything. Yeah. Um the only thing we're going to be doing is we're going to take out the rock, um we're going to do some leveling in there, and then we are going to come back and put some sod in um you know, some of the places there that's low and stuff. Okay, do I hear a motion? I'll make a motion. Okay, I got
008a motion. I need a second. A second. Got a motion and a second. Any further discussion on that? Is it I don't know if you looked through the plans, but it is it's it's going to be really, really nice. So, Hey, all those in favor signify by saying I. I. All right, all those opposed by the same. Okay, that passes 5-0. Okay, next up this evening, I'm going to turn it over to Mrs. Clark to talk to you a little bit about the home entry uh reading adoption. So, we started about a year ago um looking for a new reading series, and we created a committee for to review the different textbooks. We were definitely looking for a series that the IDOE had approved on the high-quality curricular materials advisory list. Um and we came
009up with two different series, and we um just kind of researched those as a committee um and voted. And so, the winning textbook was McGraw Hill Wonders. Um and I put some samples up there. I also um Mrs. Trefa Edwards, she was kind of the leader of the committee, so she gathered some thoughts together, and we put it on paper just listing the reasons why we felt like this was our best um option. So, one of the things that the intermediate level that we were really looking at was that it was aligned to the checkpoint. Um and this series is aligned. Um it follows the flow of each Indiana state checkpoint. Um and I know at the primary level they were really wanting to focus on phonics. Which this series does a good job at
010focusing on phonics. Um It is aligned with the standards. It had a lot of We were looking for something that was more rigorous than the series that we had and the questions that went along especially the reading comprehension questions that went along with each story. They were created to kind of mimic the questions that are on the checkpoints and that's what we were really looking for. So we just felt like that was our best option. How long does this last? Six years. Uh so the cost of the reading adoption is approximately 151,537.07. And we will be taking this out of the education fund. So I need a motion to approve that. I'll make a motion to approve. Okay, I have a motion. Do I have a second? Second. Okay, motion second. Any further discussion? Uh
011paid out of what? Education fund. Okay. All those in favor signify by saying I. Opposed the same. Who seconded? Roger did. Sorry. Yeah. So that's a That's approved. Madam Secretary, taking notes on the project. Good job. Okay, this evening we have personnel recommendations. Just wanted to point it out a couple of things. We The board just received this morning the recommendation for Cameron France as the Wood Memorial High School girls volleyball coach. Wanted to make sure that you everyone saw that. Also I want to say take just a moment. Mrs. Engstrom is retiring this year as a second grade teacher at Winona Memorial Elementary School after 40 years in education. I'm sure some of you sitting at this table have had her as your teacher. So, but anyway, I just wanted to bring that forward
012and thank her for all of her years of service to the kids in this corporation and we wish her the best on her retirement. We will be recognizing our retiring teachers at the May 4th meeting with the corporation again. So, just wanted to make you aware of that. So, anyway, also Mr. Bingham is here this evening. We are bringing forward him as the new Winona Memorial High School boys basketball coach. Also, the other only one I didn't mention was Dustin Hizer and he's taking an FMLA for the birth of his child. He had a little girl. He had a little girl. So, very beautiful. We'll hear personnel recommendation. Personnel recommendations. Do I need a motion to approve? I'll make the motion to approve. I need a second. I'll second. Any further discussion? All those in
013favor signify by saying I. I. Opposed the same. Okay. This evening really quickly just to let everyone know, we're missing a couple of our principals. They are at a career fair at USI. So, just to let you know that. They did skip out. Steve is with the golf team. Steve Rose with the golf team and Allison, her daughter had her first softball game tonight. So, So, lots of things are going on as we go into the spring and I know Mrs. Rose is going to go to a baseball game. So, you have there my report. A couple of things I just want to point out. One is beginning May in May I will be introducing a new program called Trojan Ambassadors. This will be a program to invite parents, business leaders, and community members to
014join a group of about 15 to 20 people. We'll meet monthly to learn more about the corporation. This is just a a reach out to our community. We'll We'll talk about different facets of the corporation each month to allow people to get to know more about the corporation. A couple of the other things too, I attended the Indiana Association of School Business Officials meeting as well as Superintendent's Study Council. One of the things that came up and I think we definitely need to be watching this is House Bill 1242. It directed the Department of Education to complete a report a study on school corporations around the state. They're supposed to be looking at test scores, enrollment within the county, enrollment in the school corporation, how many school corporations there were in the county. This is
015mainly a consolidation report. So, just be aware of that. The state is moving and pushing towards consolidation. So, just be aware that we need to be watching this very closely because in my opinion, you consolidate um community small communities dry up when they lose their school. So, we don't want that to happen. So, just be aware of that. Also, summer school has been changed a little bit. We'll be receiving funding based upon per student per course credit hour. For priority reimbursement, we'll get $160. So, that would be like our IREAD kids. And then just reimbursed courses, we would receive $135. So, just be aware of that. And then we'll be submitting through Data Exchange and Harmony, which is a little bit different than what it's been done in the past. I also gave you a
016little bit of an financial update down there at the bottom. We are right now below appropriations what we thought we were going to spend. So, we're spending less, which is a good thing. We have about half right now in our education fund $933,903.84. In our operations fund, we have 1,396,674.01. So, we're doing pretty good. Do you have rainy day in? I do not have rainy day in there, but I think we have about two 2,634,000, I think. Um lots of upcoming activities. Um as you guys know, we're coming down to the end of the year. So, um I've going to keep that on your um weekly newsletter, those different activities. Um 4T graduation program coming up May 11th. That's when our next school board meeting is. That'll be at 10:35 in the morning over at
017the Toyota Visitor Center. Um and then you have graduation on May 23rd at 11:00. And have we already did the uh bleachers out there? We need to get them out. Yes. We don't pay them, but we're not signed up on them, yeah. Okay. Yep. Yep. Yep. We're okay on that. So, what we're waiting right now on the bleachers, just give a quick update on that. Um Jeremy is down at the baseball game, otherwise he'd be here tonight. Um we have drawings on those. I believe you and Jeremy checked them today. They the measurements didn't match up with our current aisles and stuff, so we're sending those back. Once we get the the drawings correct and we've signed off on them, and approved them, um then they'll give us an actual uh production time and when
018they will be they'll be installed. At this point in time, it's now looking like we won't get it this summer. So, it'll probably be sometime next week. That's when they would be installed. But anyway, Okay. That's all I have, Mr. President. All right. Uh vegetables You've done reported yours? Um we've had some events going on. So, we had parents lunch a few weeks ago, um which is just a good way to get the parents in the building. So, that went well. We just had our spring fling last Friday, this past Friday. It was amazing. >> Yeah, they didn't hear it this time, did they? No, they got it. They got it mastered. Yeah. Um we used the whole school. They had a tent donated for Aker Industries that they set up. So, I felt like
019everything was spread out and we could accommodate everyone. So, it went really well. It was It was very impressive. Yeah. The halls were amazing. Everyone worked so hard. >> one I've missed in a long time. Where was I at? And it was the best one yet. I know. We were there for you. Don't worry. We planned it out. We planned it out. I was there, too. Yeah, it was 50 or 60 bucks, so. No, it's always a good time. Always. Always. >> was great. So, um we finished up I learned checkpoint three and we just keep testing. Today we started the summative, so. This will be it. Mr. Bingham, you got anything to say since you're here for your You got to be here for a principal tonight. Yeah. She was interested. That's kind of
020my thing, too. Seems like it never stops, but yeah, we finished up checkpoint three in the middle school as well for I learn. We started the summative with the sixth grade today. Sixth grade will be all week this week and then seventh and eighth grade will pick that up next week. Um following that On the 27th I got it set up on this campus to do a two-hour delay schedule so that we can do what's called the ELA PT portion of the test. It's the writing. They write a long essay. Um so 6 7 and 8 will all be um in a testing location typing up essays and actually high school biology I learn will be happening in the school in this room probably. At the same time, Uh everybody else will be in their
021Trojan Pride for the first 2 hours. We kind of set it up that way so that in the past we've done it where we had students in holding tanks and it's kind of hard to manage them what not. At least I set it up this year so that every teacher still sees every student every day. Uh so it's not like the history teacher has to not see them for a while they're doing English and and math testing. So I I hope that works out better. Well, it's not going to be your fault. If not, yeah. We'll regroup. We'll try something else. As a former teacher, I applaud you for that. All right. I'm looking at you. Board members, you guys got any hang-ups? Congratulations, Mr. Bingham on the new boys head coach here at William
022Byrd. They're busy. It's about that time, man. All right. If not, I need a motion to adjourn. I'll make a motion to adjourn. I need a motion and a second. Second. All in favor say aye. Aye. Now, you guys all need to keep coming because the planet sounds better when you guys are here. That's right. Second Monday. Second Monday. I want to say something real quick about two months ago. Hey. I'm not a mind reader, but I am a leader. I appreciate all you guys coming to me. You know, what I I appreciate you guys working And I appreciate the work you do.
