board for have for all your support and helping to make the Arts and Victor an important part of our students education I'm sure that many of you already know that art education is so much more than just learning how to make you know pretty pictures you know art education is really about language it's math it's science it's art history it's culture it's all of those rolled into into one so just like how our youngest students first learn how to hold a pencil before learning how to write their names in and then ultimately learn how to express themselves in art they have many different drawing tools that they have to learn how to manipulate also before they can learn how to express themselves um so with that you know I I'm I'll shorten this down because
I want to get long-winded here um so with that we are not just teaching how to make pictures we're teaching students how to think and how to express themselves in a variety of different ways and there's a lot of connections in what we do to the different core content areas so with with math or science in third grade we learn about negative space we learn how to make some simple molds and that becomes an applied science when they get up to high school they learn how to do things like maybe glaze calculation where they can apply some some learning from chemistry so um so I am I am truly honored to be here to present these certificates to our young students I'm going to be presenting first to our ECS student who is Estelle Chapman
she's a kindergartner and she made the beautiful owl that is on display out in the um in the hallway so if Estelle can come on up do we have our certificates over here [Applause] there you go all right and next up is Anna Orton who's also a student of mine she's a second grader at the primary school and Anna made the beautiful Jim dine inspired heart where she learned how to do highlights and shadows to create a three-dimensional surface on a two-dimensional paper so if Hannah can come on up here [Applause] thank you all right and next up I'm going to present for our art teacher Victoria Rosati who's unable to be here with us she has some stuff going on with her kids tonight in school so if we have Priya is she here
Priya can you come on up and so Victoria wrote that Prius painting was inspired by the late great artist Alma woodsy Thomas Alma was an incredible artist and is well known for her Alma stripe style Priya was to create her own artwork inspired by Alma she had to choose colors from nature and use a variety of brushes to complete her work I'm so happy it was chosen to be a part of the permanent collection at Victor schools well deserved and congratulations [Applause] and next up is Leah cernick is from the Middle School I am so excited to present the Victor Junior High permanent collection award to Evie Wick Evie come up here Evie created a photorealistic colored pencil drawing of a snail for our careers and art project students chose a career in the art
field and Evie chose nature photography when you get a chance to see her drawing you will find yourself wondering if it is an actual photograph or a drawing Evie has talent and artistic maturity far beyond her years she is hard-working dedicated and strives for for Perfection I feel so lucky to have taught Evie this year and I'm so excited to see what she does in her future years in our art Department [Applause] Adam Spector will now present the senior high award thank you hi everyone my name is Adam Spector I am the new art teacher at the senior high school I'd like to present this award to Anna kalumbai Anna will you come up thank you a couple things about Anna so we start school very early at the high school 7 30 on a
rolls-in ready to just participate do incredible work she never stops she asks for extensions so that she can make her work better and better and better after far surpassing expectations you've been fantastic to work with you I'm very proud of you for this okay can I turn things over to Mr DeLucia please okay yay for our artist huh isn't that great I'm loving it okay now we got another important person to call up here Dewey Weimer please thank you good evening everyone Dewey Weimer director of health physical education and Athletics at Victor Central uh first congratulations to all the Art Award recipients my kiddos are much more artistic than I am and I'm in awe and what you guys do out there so congratulations I would like to thank the Board of Education Dr Terra
Nova all the building and District level administrators for your support throughout the year we're not done yet in the athletic world we still have teams playing um I would like to say all of our spring teams once again scholar athlete teams which makes our district fifth year in a row School of Distinction congratulations foreign this year this 20 22-23 year we had 1953 participants nearly 1 000 individuals we're getting close to that 2000 Mark um and we are going to surpass that uh thanks to the uh the passing of the last budget which includes a modified indoor program so our Athletic program is growing and thriving you're going to hear some numerous conference selection and accolades today uh with some of our recipients here tonight but I do want to mention some other programs our
unified basketball program did fantastic this year was the largest team we've ever had our boys tennis team were in the A1 semis uh fantastic season boys golf Monroe County Champs in uh unsuccessful in the double A semis but you're going to hear a little bit about them tonight track and field girls third and A1 boys second in A1 baseball second in double A so they lost in the championship softball second and double-a lost in the championship so close for both of those programs boys lacrosse Monroe County Champs a Class B Section 5 Champs Western Regional Champs and they play tomorrow night five o'clock versus West Genesee at Tompkins Cortland Community College for the far wet or the Western Regional for a birth into the state championship girls lacrosse also plays tomorrow Class B Champs they
play A Bethlehem at 11 and then if they're successful it'll be an 11 30 Championship Saturday at SUNY Cortland so we're not done we got a long way to go here a super successful season we're really excited about it but I do want to bring up some special people um so we would like to recognize Johnny Hagerty as part of our Alpine Section 5 composite state championship team and his coach Jen Haggerty come on up please [Applause] um I'm Jen Haggerty thank you Dewey um I'm the Victor Alpine ski team coach and I would like to thank the Board of Education Dr terranova and Mr Weimer for recognizing all the athletes tonight as well as the artist um I'm here tonight to honor our athlete but I also wanted to tell you a little bit
about our season we had 20 athletes on our team that comprised of girls and boys varsity and JV we also had the pleasure of having two West around equate skiers who skied with us as what they call a team of one um our girls Finish First in the Monroe County Ski league and second in sectionals our boys finished second in the league and seventh in sectionals this was an extremely hard working group of athletes they all competed to The Highest Potential every time they skied and they were hard-working and great teammates this was our I think this year we had the most Awards we had three athletes make first team Monroe County to make second team Monroe County and three athletes make all Greater Rochester um at sectionals we had three athletes make the New
York State Alpine Section 5 team made up of 11 girls and 11 boys they were picked based on their performance at sectionals Victor had two girls and one boy and tonight we would like to congratulate Johnny Haggerty who was part of the section 5 boys composite team that won state championships Johnny placed six in the Gs and seventh or sorry eighth in the slalom at sectionals to make the State team at state championships Johnny placed 13th in the slalom and 12th in the giant solemn helping Section 5 team win the state's championship Johnny is a six-year member of vast Victor alpensky team he's a six-year scholar athlete as well as a captain for the last two seasons in 21 and 22 he was named to second team Monroe County this year he made first team
Monroe County he was also named to the fir what first team Monroe County he was also named to all Greater Rochester in addition to being on the state championship team Johnny will attend Hobart William Smith colleges in the fall and study computer science as well as be a member of the hws Alpine ski team congratulations [Applause] [Music] so Jen Johnny's the Third Hagerty to come through the program fourth Hagerty in final Hagerty to come through the final Equity congratulations um the next program we'd like to bring up here is our boys golf so we have Coach Trevor Sousa and second place State finisher and class double a section 5 Champion Brody Burgess come on [Applause] thank you Trevor Souza the Victor Varsity golf coach I'm honored to be here tonight thank you Dr Terra Nova
the board admin Dewey and everyone for recognizing all of these special people the obviously the art collection and our fellow athletes and coaches that we're here with and special group the newly tenured staff that's here as well a special night for them in their career [Applause] to my right um is sophomore Brody Burgess who is now a two-time class double a sectional Champion he wanted as a freshman and then defended his title as a sophomore this year which is pretty impressive he shot two even par rounds over at Clifton Springs over the course of 30 36 holes so those of you that are familiar with golf yeah you shot even par for two days which is pretty impressive and I think he defended his title by about seven or eight shots over the rest of
Monroe County in section five that was competing that day so Brody has obviously had a pretty amazing career this is his third year as a varsity golfer and I was just doing some of the math today he is collectively 62 one and one uh in his career so far as a varsity golfer and obviously a huge reason for not only his individual success but our team success over the last couple years as well it's been an honor to coach him Brody just got back from Mark Twain Golf Club down in Elmira we bought we got back Monday night where Brody finished second overall in New York state and Brody was about five back with about five to play and he finished with a really strong finish on the golf course um he shot 76 on
the first day and then two under 70 on the second day to get him in the mix the leader made a couple mistakes coming down the last few holes and we found ourselves waiting to see and he ended up in a playoff unfortunately on the first playoff hole the other competitor made a really nice birdie Brody was right in it there till the end but to be number two in New York state especially as a sophomore is definitely something that he should be really proud of and the way that he carried himself represented our program in a really positive way so with that the top six go to Federation so Brody is going back to federations he actually finished eighth last year overall but a few people couldn't go to Federation so Brody is heading
to Bethpage black for those golf fans they know that course the Ryder Cup is going to be there in two years so Brody's going to warm it up for him and who knows maybe we'll see him on the team as a late edition or something like that but he's going down to compete with the New York public State High School um and the federations uh with six other guys from uh the section or sorry from the state um to try to bring back a title from them which actually no pressure Brody the public high school section is never lost so he was down there last year he's looking forward to getting back at it but again Brody is not only a great golfer he's a great young man I've learned a lot from him it's
a privilege coaching him I love going to the course with him every day even though he beats me um I got to work on my game to give back on him but congrats congratulations Brody on a great season [Applause] thank you before I bring up the last program we're going to talk to tonight I would like to mention that our Athletics College commitment ceremony is scheduled for this Tuesday in the senior high gym at 3 30. it's open to anyone who's interested in attending we do have 24 cons confirmed uh participants in that so the last program I would like to bring up tonight is our track and field program so we have all of our individual and relay sectional Champions if you could please come up with Coach Bobby Goodell and Coach Ross hankovic
foreign when I was up here in the winter time I talked about the growth of our our track and field programs here in in Victor and um the indoor program did grow in in much to our surprise the outdoor program grew as well we saw 115 athletes um in our program in the varsity level and 150 I believe at the modified level so things are are trending up in in the track and field programs and a lot of that has to do with the the support we get from our Administration in the High School athletic department as well as our community parent support and again I would like to thank the community for their outstanding support as well as the board of education for having us here tonight to recognize these outstanding young athletes I'll
take this time to to um to recognize our boys in coach hunkovic will talk about the females here in a moment we had a relay team that won the sectionals this uh spring not all those members are here tonight do other commitments but I would like to take the moment to recognize cold and chiricella Lucas Hillman and Quentin Slaughter three outstanding young individuals two of them coming back next year and they will certainly make a lot of noise both indoor and outdoor and I'm sure they will be here being recognized for being champions again next season I have Pat Purcell who was also the fourth member of that relay team and was also crowned in individual sectional champion in the 400 hurdles an event that's dear to my heart as a former hurdler Pat was
one of the first individuals I met on campus when I arrived two years ago as a track coach and he was very welcoming to me and like a sponge one to soak in everything I could offer him and it's been a pleasure to work with with Pat and go on this journey with him and watching him improve immensely over the last two seasons he was named a team captain both indoor and outdoor and uh just in an outstanding individual one of the true good guys you like to have on your team and Pat you're going to be missed by your teammates and and me I'll miss seeing you at practice every day next year um so congratulations to you on on this award thank you I'll get to the cert here the next individual is
not hard to talk about because I I live with them it my son Andrew Goodell here um this is one one of the the pleasures that I've had in coming to Victor and I'm appreciative of the opportunity I have to be here every day with both my son and daughter not a lot of people can uh say that they they get to watch their kids grow up and compete and it's been a blessing to get to spend the the last two seasons with him and this year bringing my daughter on on board but Andrew had an outstanding season um a lot of times he jokes and and kids joked that we wouldn't even know we were related at practice because we really don't don't communicate like like Father and Son there but um I I
do ride him hard I think he had a he had a broken elbow as a freshman due to some hurtling practice on a cold snowy day and got through that and as a sophomore athlete did an outstanding job for us um third on on the team in points he was a county champion in the pentathlon sectional champion in the pentathlon which is a busy difficult gruing day for an athlete next year he's going to be called upon to replace a lot of our outstanding young individuals Like Pat and Colden and um and in Tariq and some of the other guys that are leaving us this year and um we're we're proud of him and his accomplishments and uh he's I'm happy to to be able to coach him so congratulations Andrew [Applause] and now um
I'm going to turn it over to coach humkovic and he can talk about the ladies here hi everyone so these are not just some of the fastest athletes in the section in the state but if you ask any other teachers they are some of the hardest working nicest people that we have walking through the halls of the high school so you know to mirror what coach Goodell said it's a tremendous honor to work with them every single day uh before I talk about uh are three sectional Champions who are here that actually represent five sectional championships from our meet a couple of quick thank yous uh in addition to thanking our board and Dr Terra Nova uh we have a phenomenal coaching staff of Gerry O'Dell Ryan horse Ryan Ellis and of course uh coach
Bob Goodell that do a phenomenal job uh none of us individually could do what we all do together and you know it's it's truly an honor to work with people who know the events so well but really care about the kids and are always going above and beyond in addition we have great boosters and big shoes to fill because all three of them are leaving but Cindy chiricella uh Meredith Ferraro and also Michelle Schroeder did just a great job and in addition to raising funds as all boosters do they didn't just work for their own kids they worked for all the kids in the program and with over a hundred athletes you know it's a lot of work behind the scenes so we couldn't do what we do without them uh big thank you to
Dewey you know we're in his office a lot and in talking about growing the program we asked for a lot and he's been really good at showing up and not just getting us the funds but kind of sharing the vision with us so tremendous thank you to Dewey uh just for you know believing in coach godell and myself to lead this program together but also uh to be there down with our kids at the meets and showing up on the track and you know prioritizing tracks so and then finally the parents you know it kind of dawned on me coming in that these are some of the last generations of athletes who had to sort of compete and train and even have some of their Seasons canceled throughout covid so I think there's an extra
level of perseverance within this group and it's going to be sad to see them go um our parents are phenomenal I think collectively when you get our program we have a ton of character and that really starts at home so thank you to the parents who are here okay we had a 4x4 team win the sectional championships and a School record that consisted of a Tasia Williams Robin kratke librazakio and Melody harloff so to tell the story of that 4x4 you have to talk about everything that happened that day so first Tasia Williams couldn't be here she had a conflict but I want to talk about the whole relay uh atasia when we got to the relay it was her third event of the day she did the 200 and now she did the 4x1
and previously at the county championships you know she had some sore calves she was all wrapped up in KT tape and we had a lot of people that were hurting but as a true Captain does because she was one of our captains that was selected by our teammates she showed up and she ran out of her minds and it was a huge contributor to that sectional Championship uh she's really the glue that held us together uh often with the team it's a hundred athletes are hard to keep track of so we kind of look at our captains as an extension of our coaching staff so if you see a Tasia wish her congratulations okay our first athlete president Robin kratke she is our sole under underclassmen on this sectional champ relay team so she's a
sophomore running with Juniors and seniors and you know I think there's a pretty good chance like some of these other athletes are going to see her up here again so quick story on Robin she was one of the best 400 runners in the entire section but before the sectional championships and we were doing entries she came up to me and said hey you know what I think I just want to focus on the relays for sectionals so it takes a special type of athlete especially an underclassmen to say you know what I want to sacrifice my individual event because I want to be in those relays and it's really rare to find someone as young as her who really wants to do something for someone else rather than themselves you know and she's a testament
to the fact that even though it's individual events it's not an individual sport so I'm really excited I just met Robin this season but she did such a phenomenal job she works hard but she also is a lot of fun to be around so big round of applause for Rob and cracky our next athlete is Leah brezakio so when you look up student athlete in the dictionary Leah's picture is there I can attest to this because I have her in U.S history this year and I'm going to have her next year in AP Government she is an absolute pleasure to have in class and she works as hard in the classroom as she does on the track she holds me accountable in the classroom she had an outstanding season and you know she has very
high expectations she trains hard and she expects to win it was really cool talking to her throughout the season and one of the things that we always said is you know you can't be so hard on yourself she really expects Perfection and that sectional she literally was perfect before she got the Baton on our 4x4 relay she was already the 400 hurdles sectional Champion so she won two championships individual and relay within about 90 minutes so I'm really excited to see what she's going to do next year as a senior and I know the best is yet to come so Leah brezakio [Applause] sorry we got a lot of certificates over here and last but certainly not least we would need a separate ceremony to go through all the accomplishments of Melody harloff so I'll
just give you a quick highlight reel she is five-time Monroe County Champion 12-time sectional Champion seven-time New York State medalist including the anchor leg of our state championship indoor 4x4 she is the most decorated track and field Sprinter that Victor has ever seen on the day of the sectional Champions she won the 100 meter dash the 200 meter dash the 400 meter dash before she was the anchor leg of our 4x4 so yeah 14 years of coaching track and field that's the most impressive single day performance that I've ever seen out of any Athlete on any team and when you hear about this you might think to yourself man Melody's a Terminator she's got to be very robotic when you get to know her she's kind she's fun she says thank you to her coaches
and she's just been a truly great Ambassador for the sport um you know she's got a huge scholarship from Youngstown and they gave her that money because they're impressed by her times but I think they're going to be more impressed when they have her on the team and see what a great teammate she's going to be so I'm tremendously excited for what's going to happen in the future so congratulations on your four sectional titles Melody [Applause] foreign did you get yours in school well coach it's tough to follow that radio voice that you have um now I'd like to call up Dr terranova for recognition of our tenure recipients thank you Mr DeLucia it's not sure how you can top that amazing student athletes amazing artists and that's what we're about at Victor Central School
District so I want to recognize uh an amazing group of teachers who have earned tenure this group and the big key word is earned uh this was not just given to them first and foremost they're one of those uh top groups of teachers in the area because they were hired in Vector with some significant competition I want to thank Dorothy D'Angelo who is our assistant superintendent for personnel who's really in charge of the hiring process and all our leadership staff who supported that and found the these great candidates uh three to four years ago and then I want to also thank all the leadership staff and the teaching staff that supported and mentored them through their probationary period which again is either three years if they had tenure in another place or four years if
this is the first assignment that they've had one special thank the thanks to Linda izo and Jan Saucier who are the two mentors that really work with these teachers throughout their probationary period uh great big thing Round of Applause for them [Applause] uh and so with them and the other teachers and are certainly our leadership staff they've done a great job supporting them and the third thank you besides the HR office for hiring them and our mentors and our leadership staff would be to them because these individuals are growth have a growth mindset they're absolutely completely dedicated to kids they believe in all kids and they have that balance of us great social emotional intelligence and creating a warm positive culture but they also have a rigorous environment in their classroom and they can teach
highly effectively so we are so thankful to have them I'm going to list their names some aren't here most are if you hear your name would you please just keep stand up and then stay standing don't sit down because we want to make sure everybody's standing up at the end so first I'm going to announce that I don't think these individuals are here but if they are would love it if you stood up as well uh but I'll I'll start with uh Jocelyn Daniel look from the The Early Childhood school she is earning tenure tonight Holly DeVito is earning tenure from The Early Childhood school as well and so is Naomi Foley from The Early Childhood school I don't believe they're here but they are outstanding teachers Deegan Voorhees from the primary school is in
addition is earning tenure with this group as well and I don't think any of them are here at this point but this morning I was able to go to all five buildings and give them boutonnieres some it took till two o'clock to find them but that's okay because they're really busy but I was able to interact with all of them and it was just a great honor to say hello so in addition to that group from the Early Childhood school we have Stephanie Bock Stephanie's here big round of applause Jessica Sapp [Applause] and Ashley Wiest early childhoods will stay standing though from the primary school we have Hillary Ross hell yeah I already mentioned deegan's name and then from the Intermediate School we have Anna Atwater Anna you're here Kyle pecora Lauren spittleari an assistant
principal Stacy Thibodeau [Applause] just so people know Stacy's leaving on Monday I believe uh Stacy was hired as the head of special education in the Marcus Whitman School District which is a huge promotion a great achievement by her and hopefully someday we'll get her back but a big thank you to Stacy for great work from the junior high you already saw her up here recognizing kids Leah zarnekis thank you as well as Ashley van callenberg [Applause] and from the senior high we have Sarah annley Sarah's there not sure if Emily's here but I want to recognize Emily Dietz [Applause] Gretchen judge uh Peter pulliat from the school counseling office Benjamin Ramo [Applause] and somebody who makes my life easier every single day Brian siesto principal of the high school okay gosh did we did we
forget anybody hopefully we didn't forget anybody these are our 10-year candidates another big round of applause and then they can sit down [Applause] you want to just keep going all right so the next thing we want to do is uh two quick recognitions and then um Mr DeLucia will come up and also talk about these two individuals we have two individuals leaving the Board of Education this year one uh is Debbie Palumbo Sanders who who just got back from vacation I think and I'm glad she's here big wave Debbie let's see so so Debbie was uh Debbie was on the board when I was hired in February of 2020 she was actually the president and somehow she convinced the other board members to hire me so first and foremost I am so thankful for that
appreciate that uh she was amazing that year then left to run her small business and we are really thankful that Debbie came back this year to help us out uh when Karen Ballard left the board and so I just want to thank Debbie you've been an incredible resource to me I always uh always has what's right for kids in the top of her mind and always is focused on what's best for the district a legendary name you know Palumbo Sanders a great family Incredible family all the way back in history of Victor and always put Victor first so just a big thank you to Debbie and for all her work [Applause] and then uh Trisha Turner uh Trisha Turner came on the board in uh July of 2020 it was her second stint as a
board member I was lucky to have her for work with her for three years uh Trisha is decided not to run uh for next year and we are going to greatly miss her a couple things about Trisha Turner and three things actually that you need to know one she is absolutely passionate about doing what's best for kids all the time she is always has our kids all four thousand three hundred of them right at the top of her uh priority list and will always do what's best for kids second she's an incredible advocate for kids and has many connections at the state level in government that has allowed us to get some of that money back that we needed to support this district and has been a liaison to many of our legislators to get
them get them to come to Victor so that we can have one-to-one conversations with them and advocate for this district and those relationships have been incredibly powerful and last but not least just a great understanding of the board's role in relation to the superintendent she is a true team player for three years she's been nothing but supportive not afraid to give her a sense of what what's right what's wrong and what we ought to do but which is critically important but an incredible team players so for her expertise or collaboration her advocacy and her belief in kids we are going to greatly miss you Trisha and I just wanted to thank you for your service so now call up our board president Mr DeLucia who also has some words yeah maybe not wisdom first Debbie
Palumbo Sanders um her service service to VCS has been significant she led us in our superintendent search as you heard Dr terranova talk about um serve together as on a leadership team for the district and learned a lot from Debbie she's she offered to step in when we needed someone to join the board when we lost one of our board members who resigned and um she's a wonderful person to work with she always is searching for more information searching to make sure she understands the district understands the needs understands what's best for the kids and the staff throughout Victor so happy to have served with Debbie proud to have stood side by side with her serving the district thank you Debbie Trisha um where's Trisha there's Trisha lady in black today again service to VCS
has been significant decisions have been measured and in the best interest of students teachers staff administrators um and uh in school in the school Community always had the best decisions for our district my interactions with with Trisha have always been meaningful and constructive and she's been a great sounding board we've had a lot of conversations has helped significantly with connections to government contacts for legislative issues and advocacy for the district issues you can't measure that but it's it's truly something that was of value to our district you will be missed but I know where you live and I have your phone number um so on behalf of the board for both of you thank you for your service to VCS and Trisha don't change your phone number thank you [Applause] okay ladies come on up
just a little thank you [Applause] okay before I introduce the last person for this portion again uh want to congratulate the artists the athletes the uh all the folks that received tenure and of course our board members so one last chance for Applause thank you now I'll ask Karen Fincher to come up and talk about the visual performing arts hall of fame recipient program I need my glasses now hi everybody my name is Karen Fender I'm the assistant superintendent for instruction here in Victor and I have lots of opportunities to work with wonderful people across the district but one of the Committees that I have the benefit to serve on is our Arts Hall of Fame committee and it's a committee made up of a variety of stakeholders there are staff members that represent music
art and theater there are students that represent those same three Fields as well as the Board of Education member and Kristen Elliott and other staff across the building in the district and we collect nominations for awards and this year the committee received a few nominations and painstakingly took time to go through them and while we want to recognize the individual that will be inducted into the Hall of Fame formally this fall when his family is in the area to be able to receive the award I just wanted an opportunity to let you know of the hard work of the committee and some of the things that they recognized about this year's recipient Mr Benjamin barbash the students in particular were especially moved by this nomination they remarked about how Ben's contributions and involvement while at
Victor Senior High School propelled him further to study theater and to return to this area with the intent of making a theater Corridor um connecting both Community groups higher education programs and school programs now unfortunately before Mr barbash could realize this he passed away and so this award will be presented to his family posthumously earlier or later rather this fall and so please welcome Mr barbash into our Arts Hall of Fame and I look forward to celebrating that moment later in the fall thank you [Applause] okay that's it for the cool part of our meeting tonight we're going to take a a brief recess and reconvene in the boardroom thank you okay we are back um before I turn this over to our superintendent I want to read this reminder persons wishing to address the
board must sign up prior to the start of the public participation speakers must register on the form provided by the district at the entrance of the boardroom to maintain a first come first serve process for purposes of following up with speakers the speakers must provide their name address telephone number and or email address to limit comments the matters which may be properly discussed during public participation the speakers will provide the topics any group or organization wishing to address the board must identify a single sport spokesperson so if you haven't signed up yet you have an opportunity the next couple of minutes so with that on item four is the superintendent's update Dr terranova thank you Mr DeLucia I'll be brief because really the update was what just happened in the auditorium which is amazing I
do want to give a big thank you to all of our students who are recognized for their efforts as well as certainly our our teachers who were recognized for tenure as I said in the auditorium 10 years earned not given and they're going to make a huge impact on thousands of kids for the next many many years so we're really excited about that uh actually the one thing I want to talk about tonight is our summer programming we have continued to develop thanks to the leadership uh of our administrators under Karen finter our principals a robust strong summer program that involves as many kids as possible and families as possible so that they can have that connection to school throughout the summer I'm just going to list them and briefly very briefly describe them this
is also thanks to the leadership of Derek Felice our assistant superintendent of her business because we have used significant amounts of federal stimulus funds to cover the summer programming but he is incredibly skillful at now being able to take and budget for the summer programming as we move forward it's something we're continuing to look at all the time but it's been such a success that we need to figure out a way to do it and he's the one who figures out a way to do it so just big thank you to Derek so here here's what we have the 2023 summer opportunities include uh Summer Academy the Summer Academy has 225 students registered in grades K-8 which is an increase over last year this is where we focus on remedial skills in reading and math
we have transportation that's provided to the primary and the intermediate students and we have 27 skilled instructors as well as additional support helping out in that program we have a variety of Summer enrichment programs happening it includes 184 students registered in grades K through 6 which is also an increase over 2022 focus on providing enriching experiences in the area of stem arts or Humanities scheduled based on grade level again we transport our kids in the primary and the intermediate building have to have a big shout out to to the um Camp invention which is under the direction of the PTSA that's another enrichment opportunity I encourage people to look at that that's a great Camp uh we're lucky to have it and also the Victor Parks and Recreation has a significant amount of summer camping
and enrichment opportunities that are collaborative on our district campus many times with us we have the extended school year which is a program for specific students with disabilities determined through annual reviews and or this committee on special education and our goal is to prevent regression so that we can keep the momentum going with our kids transportation is provided it's a wonderful program and more and more families are obviously interested in participating in it we're trying to accommodate as many that we can with the specific disabilities and again through the annual review and CSE process but it's critically important to have that extended year program right on our campus to support our kids and this year we're hosting the regional summer school which is a in top on top of all the kids that we just
talked about we have students who can take required core courses grades 8 through 12 or prepare for Regents exam there's hundreds of kids coming to our campus it's enrollment through the school counselors the program dates are July 5th all the way through August 17th and it's not just our Victor students it's Bloomfield red Jack at Honey eye and Canandaigua students as well so between the regional summer school the extended school year for students with disabilities the summer enrichment programs and the Summer Academy along with our partners through Parks and Rec and Camp invention through the PTSA it is just going to be a really busy summer for kids great opportunity for all our community students in our community to get some either extra support or enrichment or both and we're really excited to have a
busy campus this summer just a quick note on some important dates coming up we uh certainly is a big one is this Sunday June 11th we have our high school graduation at uh Innovative is it Innovative or innovation thank you Innovation field formerly Frontier field uh we asked the kids the seniors to get there right around 6 30 and the ceremony starts at 7 30 p.m on Sunday June 11th we have the amazing Elementary Special Olympics tomorrow starting at 10 A.M I believe we are moving them indoors to make sure everybody's safe especially those who might have asthma and other potential physical health needs so but we are going to have the Special Olympics tomorrow at 10 A.M big thank you to our special ed department and people services department for organizing that and our
phys Ed teachers and um two other quick ones I we can't I can't attend this I'd love to do it but uh the alumni dinner is also this Sunday I believe it starts at 6 p.m that's a huge event for our alumni uh it just happens to coincide with our graduation this year but I know that'll be a a big attendance is that at Ravenwood do we know Ravenwood Country Club for the alumni dinner and I just want to do a shout out to one particular senior his name's Jack West he's a good friend of uh High School principal Mr siesto Jack West uh was able to do a music video in our high school this over about three months the video will be coming I want to give the board a heads up too
just in case the video is coming out soon Jack is no ordinary musician Jack has traveled uh the world he is a lead singer in a band and again he's graduating this year I had him on the town hall that we're going to be showing on Monday just an amazing young man and basically shot a music video in our high school that of course we ran by our legal team first and they approved the music video is amazing this kid is amazingly talented he's played with famous rock and roll musicians all over the world and I think we're going to probably hear from him but I know he appreciates Mr siesto and the high school staff for really supporting him and I don't know if that was part of your uh campus news but big
shout out to Jack so that's my superintendent's update okay thank you Dr Terra Nova item five is our public participation although the board's work is open to the public this is not a meeting with the public at this time privilege of the floor is offered to those who have signed up to speak I'll be happy to recognize those of you who wish to speak when you approach the microphone please identify yourself before presenting your thoughts please note issues related to specific School District Personnel or students must be brought to the attention of superintendent of schools privately as they are not discussable at this venue thank you for that and I have one person signed up John and I'm forgive me I'm not sure I can read your last name so I'm going to let you
Walkman Buckner and yeah John please come to the podium thank you is that is that turned on is it red or green just a couple issues I've got three but I'm only allowed a couple of minutes the first issue is who um say owns the crosswalk as you come up the hill here does the school owner does a village owner or who owns it where they're flashing light is and then there's a crosswalk well you realize this is not a dialogue so ask your questions and we'll well my question is that it's in my opinion it should be moved the crosswalk should be moving forward more towards the blinking light because you've got a curve you got a hill and a curve and if you could no matter how fast you come up that hill
that blinking light you got a telephone pole in front of that blinking light and then all of a sudden you come up on that uh crosswalk and you have kids walking across there and you don't have a a speed limit sign anywhere in the district in front of the school so my point was can the boardwalk or a crosswalk be moved forward a little so it comes away from the hill like yeah at the risk of violating my own rules here I'm going to say that because I sit on the planning board in Farmington I understand that road issues are are um are under the control of the Department of Transportation dot so those types of things have to go through the town and Dot to make any kind of changes to Road crosswalks signals
speed limits Etc I will say that our superintendent has been in contact with the town over uh potentially getting the speed limit to a school speed limit which we have never had so that's in the works but knowing how dot works it takes some time so these types of change requests don't happen quickly but certainly can be added to the list of things that we're asking for okay fair enough fair enough it and the other issue I had is um a couple weeks ago I was speaking on my granddaughter or by E4 and this other student this little kid came and threw a breaker switch it was not in a lockout position um what's protocol to to bring that to somebody's attention the boxes say no like some at all but the very next day
they did but the day that I was there and I don't know how long before that they had no lockouts well you just brought it to our attention so thank you for that okay yeah but I I you know to answer it more specifically uh you would contact either our superintendent or the administration of the building that it's close to did you say E4 E4 right thank you all right thank you for that all right I got another one I'll come at the next meeting okay all right thank you okay we are at adding item six acceptance of consent items we have six a through r okay so I first need to entertain a motion to accept these consent items a motion please Lisa second Elizabeth sorry any comments or questions regarding these items I
have a quick comment um I'm super excited uh to have on board Adam Snyder and Brian Adams and I'm ex I'm looking forward to getting their feedback about their mandated training and sharing with us any new tidbits but uh more a warm welcome to you Dr C because you want to say something there's nothing in the Personnel agenda to specifically update I did recognize Stacy in the previous assembly and we're going to miss her but you can do a great things in Marcus Whitman okay anyone else Dean not all in favor say aye aye aye any opposed and Kerry thank you 7A campus news good evening I'm Heidi Robb I'm the principal at the primary school and it was really hard for me to believe that here we are at the end of the school
year already I just want to say congratulations again to our newly tenured teachers including Mrs Ross and miss four he's from the primary school one thing you might not know is that Hillary Ross this is her second 10-year appointment here at Victor first she was elementary education and now reading teacher so congratulations on that great accomplishment tonight just before this meeting we had our sneak peek for our first grade students at the primary school we had third grade student leaders running the entire event so first graders and their families were in the building and our third grade leaders were stationed around the building almost like a scavenger hunt kind of activity and at the end PTSA provided a popsicle on the playground so it was a pretty exciting event for our first graders but honestly
it was even more special for me to see our third graders as leaders around the building welcoming our our newest Primary School students to the primary school I want to say thank you to my colleagues Mrs Byrne Mrs akola Mrs Reynolds Mrs Tripp Mrs Venter and Mr DeRose for helping out tonight at the sneak peek without them that wouldn't have been possible and thank you to PTSA for the Popsicles last week we finished we deliver at the primary school which is our student-run post office all of our students staff and families had the opportunity to write letters and our third graders along with some parent volunteers ran the student post office where they would collect and disperse all of the letters and throughout the two weeks over nine thousand letters were delivered at the primary
school they learned the process of a post office and it's really great for our third graders to all have that leadership opportunity as well as a work experience PTSA was instrumental in making that happen so a big thank you to them it's been another great year and I want to thank the board for everything they've done to support us at the primary school thanks thank you whoops I just remember how much good evening I'm Ashley sokola principal at the intermediate building as we approach the end of a school year we have a lot to celebrate at VIs during the past few months our PTSA continues to support our district in school they coordinated several events for our students staff and community they made staff Appreciation Week extremely special for our vas team providing pizza and
treats at our school they also hosted a staff appreciation luncheon it's always a huge hit every year are building and District would not be what it is without the support of our PTSA we're very lucky to work alongside them our music department has been working tirelessly preparing students for Ensemble concerts to celebrate the hard work and dedication this past school year our concerts give students the opportunity to take risks and showcasing their learning we are so proud of all of our students and staff although we are nearing the end of the school year we still have many exciting events planned next week Vis students participate in our annual Field Days this event allows students to collaborate have fun and celebrate a successful school year with their homeroom we are also looking forward to the sixth
grade celebration on June 21st it's truly a special day that serves as a reminder of the significant growth our students made during their three years at VIs finally I want to take a moment to celebrate and congratulate all of our staff who received 10-year tonight Lauren spitaleri Anna Atwater Gretchen judge Kyle pecora and Stacy Thibodeau I'd also like to recognize staff members who are retiring at the end of this month in addition I would like to congratulate Stacy Thibodeau who received who recently accepted a position as you heard earlier tonight at a different District as the Director of special education to say we are going to miss Stacy is putting it lightly she has been an asset to our school and district for the last 15 years well we are so excited for her to
begin her new chapter in her career you're going to miss her tremendously Stacy's impact on students staff parents and our school Community is immeasurable and I'm grateful for the opportunity to work with her and learn with her learn with her since I started at VIs thank you Stacy and thank you to the Board of Education for your help this year good evening my name is Rob DeRose the principal at the Early Childhood school congratulations to all the 10-year recipients 10 years of great accomplishment and I can share with great confidence that the teachers from The Early Childhood school reflect the care compassion skill set and love for teaching that's needed in our profession our students are in phenomenal hands thanks for their work and that of their colleagues here at Victor Holly DeVito Jocelyn danieluck
Naomi Foley Jessica Sapp Stephanie Bach and Ashley Wiest received tenure from the uh and work at the Early Childhood school spring kindergarten screening appointments have been taking place over the course of the past several weeks meeting our new families and their incoming kindergartners has been a joy we're thrilled to welcome a new class of Victor's youngest and newest Learners in the fall you may have seen the front Bus Loop filled with families last week as our preschoolers participated in the teddy bear parade and picnic event this event was brought back to this year for the first time in four years it was amazing and a great reminder of why our school is such a positive and happy place to work learn and connect whether it was marching around with wagons with Teddy Bears or singing
the going on a bear hunt song or eating on blankets and picnic and with all sorts of picnic goodies it was just a fantastic family and teacher and staff event with our amazing preschool learners the ECS also had its first family dance thanks to our PTSA the Aloha family dance was so much fun and was well attended students and their families are making crafts playing games enjoying popsicles and showing off their skills on the Dance Floor during the event and we look forward to continuing this new tradition in the future the end of the school year is nearing but we still look forward to many fun events including our field trips to our Victor Farmington town library and the zoo as well as our annual Flag Day celebration and Field Day events the year will
end with one last school-wide Community reads event as we focus on the joy of learning and growing as one year ends and a new one is on the horizon students will enjoy a staff skit sing an original song written by our general music teachers Mrs Foley Miss DC and Mr Boucher and read the story The Magical yet we can't wait to end our year the way it began the joy celebration and so many smiling faces and a thank you to the board for your support and for another fantastic school year and for my first year at Victor as a principal it's been a joy thank you great thank you hi everyone my name is Brian sies I'm the principal at Victor Senior High School I want to start off by recognizing seven seniors in particular
Ethan Madrid Grace Woodworth Emma Wood Justin nowicki Katie Ginther Alex Novak and Eileen Kopp those seven students are our winners of the scholarship for academic Excellence from New York State they've been released each of those students is getting between 500 and 1500 a year for each of the next four years if they go to a college in New York state and it's based on their academic performance or regions performance so they only give 8 000 of these out in the entire State and for us to get seven speaks a lot to our students and in their academic Acumen so congratulations to them we also want to thank primary teacher Steve fish a third grade teacher and Jeff Shriver who is a chemistry teacher in the high school they have done for 16 years now what
they call Chemistry connection and Steve will bring his class up and work with Jeff's AP Chemistry teachers where they go through some stations of chemistry experiments and they they were up here earlier this week like I said it's been 16 years running it's such a great partnership and it's something that I know Jeff and his students look forward to every year and obviously Steve and his students they get you know to walk on the field trip up to the high school and they're really engaged with some some older students so I just want to thank Steve Jeff and Heidi Robb for allowing this to happen it's a great tradition that we have and finally wrapping up I want to congratulate all of our teachers across the district especially in the high school who received tenure
this evening and here are some activities that we've done this past month we did our senior cap and gown campus walk last Wednesday we had senior breakfast in ball last Friday we hit our Awards night on Tuesday night our fltcc graduation is on Tuesday the 13th senior bash on June 22nd and graduation this Sunday which you know what could go wrong there it's going to be a great night so um thank you and uh it's been a great year appreciate it all right all right that's positive thinking it's all good evening everyone Brian key the principal from the junior high school a few things I want to highlight that have kind of taken place over the past couple weeks first of all you get to meet or get to read meet Leah sarnakis tonight one
of our tenure candidates and she along with Christy Gordon put on our first studio art show this afternoon we had 68 students who were in our studio art program literally displayed hundreds of different works of art in our cafeteria completely driven by students completely student organized with the help of their teachers so it was a really nice event and they're looking to kind of expand upon that next year I'm happy to share that our music program traveled to Darien Lake on June 2nd for an annual performance it's for our Ensemble group so chorus Orchestra and our band programs head down there and our student musicians performed in several different competitions this year Victor Junior High School took the top honors in all categories so that'd be chorus Orchestra and band first place for each and
that's against other schools from Monroe County and I believe even some from the Buffalo area might come into town our student council partnered with our PTSA and hosted a hugely successful end of your dance we had over half of the student body show up so those are what around 300 students came to that event they danced they laughed they generally had a very good time and now the kids are already planning for a Halloween dance in the fall which is great to hear and then lastly as we reach the end of the year I just want to take a moment to thank the board our PTSA Partners the spot which is new to us this year voice and pie for their support in our programs that we run all year long we've had a very
good year and it's thanks in large part to the support that we get from folks like yourselves and in our community that allow us to do the things that we do for kids so thank you very much have a great evening great thank you okay so there you have it campus news the last addition for this year at our last regular board meeting thank you all item 7B is a textbook presentation and adoption looks like Kristen Williamson and Leanne birkmeyer come on up hi good evening Kristen Williamson director of humanities and professional learning I'm excited to be with you tonight to present for your consideration for textbooks for our fourth grade classrooms they align to the fourth grade unit first inhabitants of New York state which is not only a social studies unit but an
integrated unit in which children address some of the social emotional learning standards and the New York State Next Generation Ela standards so in this unit students learn about the culture and history of indigenous people in New York state but they also really um key in on key ideas and determine Central the central message from both fiction and non-fiction text so the four books um we would like for you to consider tonight are all um ways in which our children can better understand indigenous culture while attending to the central message so they're all fiction books highly engaging and intended for modeling those skills via a read aloud so I know you have all of the titles but I will highlight just a couple so we have Turtles race with Beaver which is such an opportunity for
kids to think about some life lessons what's what's more important wisdom or strength and they'll kind of analyze the key ideas in that textbook and draw their Central message from that and the second text I want to highlight is Hiawatha and The Peacemaker this is a wonderful book about the formation of the Federation which is you know the foundation for our own government and so children can really dig into that but also examine those key ideas and determine the central message regarding peace over um you know fighting and the idea of forgiveness so those are the four we'd like you to consider for the first inhabitants of New York State unit in fourth grade and Leanne's going to talk to you about a book we'd like you to consider for our 10th grade unit hi
Leanne birkmeyer I teach English nine honors English 10 Regents and AP Lang and comp but my daughter is also graduating and the teddy bear parade just put me over the edge so I'm like every discu everything they all said like I'm just so thankful that my daughter went to school here so back to the teacher hat not the parent hats um I'm really excited to be able to teach the Memoir just Mercy by Brian Stevenson for 10th grade regents during our unit called the fight for justice it pairs easily with the play 12 Angry Men which introduces students to how a jury analyzes evidence and testimony and how things are almost never just black and white the main thematic Concepts we would focus on when reading just Mercy are human compassion our connected humanity and
the ways in which we judge ourselves and others focusing often on Stevenson's assertion that each of us is more than just the worst thing we've ever done this book has been a part of the AP Lang and comp curriculum for several years now and it tends to be the most remembered book of my AP lion kids it used to be night and this has kind of replaced it uh two responses from students written to me anonymously in a survey after reading this book in AP one is the main idea idea I took away from this book is that there are so many unrecognized people Stevenson included in the world who makes such a difference no matter how small their achievement may be Stevenson's work has helped me to realize how we need more people like
him who are willing to dedicate their lives to fighting for those who cannot fight for themselves and another student wrote despite individual situations we are all struggling in some way this promotes a sense of unity and creates promise for the idea that change is possible together the action of joining together against Injustice is one of the main intentions of Stevenson's book after walking away from this book I am inspired to treat others with more empathy in their struggles I have a better understanding that just as I have experienced obstacles in my life so have others this makes the idea of going through struggles a little easier knowing that you are not alone so I thought those were I mean I have a whole list of things the kids wrote but those two really stood out
to me so although Stevenson writes from the perspective of a lawyer this book is about so much more than the justice system it is a unique study and point of view perspective characterization and most importantly empathy the book helps us to contemplate what we can perhaps do as individuals when we see an injustice in our society to support others and opt for change our thematic unit will end with a rhetorical analysis of Stevenson's writing style and themes specifically in the chapter called broken and I just want to read two paragraphs from that chapter I guess I've always known but never fully considered that being broken is what makes us human we all have our reasons sometimes we're fractured by the choices we make sometimes we're Shattered by things out of our control but our Brokenness
is also the source of our common Humanity the basis for our shared search for Comfort meaning and healing our shared vulnerability and imperfection is what gives each of us our capacity for compassion we have a choice we can embrace our humanness which means embracing our broken natures and the compassion that remains our best hope for healing or we can deny our Brokenness deny compassion and as a result deny our own Humanity so that's just two two paragraphs of why I love this book so much but thank you very good okay before I go to questions I'd like to ask for a motion to adopt these titles so emotion please so moved Dr Parks second Kristen Kristen any questions for these ladies I'd just like to say in gratitude thank you for the level of specificity
with the proposals that we get prior to the meeting just doing the Deep dive so that we have a good understanding regardless of what the grade level is I very much appreciate the Hiawatha The Peacemaker and the focus that was here and I was going over it again about talking about Union because our students witnessed so much dis Union and the world around them so I just want to say thank you for the the depth that you went and putting all five of them together thank you and we will let the teachers know because they start those forms and do an incredible job that's other questions or comments and all in favor say aye aye any opposed motion carry thank you thank you thank you um item 7c review the implementation of the 2223 management
plan Dorothy Karen Karen Derek come on down gang's all here all right everyone as we close or approach the closing of year one this is just to serve as sort of a final summary of our work on the Strategic plan implementing all of the wonderful things in that stepwise manner of our year one management plan taking those pieces one step at a time so as you know this year one plan has really led the foundation for a great deal of our work the focus in uh three particular areas around culture learning and instruction and student supports and opportunities has driven the work this year it really is the underpinning around shared ownership and responsibility to come together for the Strategic plan itself there was a variety of stakeholder groups we've shared the management plan even
in its Inception with many stakeholder groups to get feedback to refine and tweak and as we continue to wrap the implementation of year one looking forward to year two also getting additional feedback because there are some good there are some carryovers as you'll hear tonight of things that we've started we've gotten a good foothold in but we need to continue into the next year and certainly this year as you've seen whether it's through the the glimpses of the things that are happening in the building and the campus news your visits to the building and talking with each of our phenomenal building leaders this management plan really comes to life not as a document that sits on the shelf that that is just sort of there to to take up space but it really comes to
life because it's so deeply embedded within our building goals and how we're looking to continually improve year after year and not just at the building level but even to the department level and so as Kristin and Leanne so eloquently shared the perspectives on text you can see the pillars around culture and learning and instruction that those particular texts are really anchored to so as we continue with our year two management plan we'll anchor even more deeply into those building and Department goals so now I'm going to turn it over to Derek Felice who'll fill you in on our first pillar thank you um unfortunately for me this was uh I had one of the easier roles thanks to the leadership of the Board of Education and Dr Terra Nova when I got here we already
had a lot of shared decision making that was required for year one but as Karen just shared we're always committed to continuous Improvement so in the pillar of culture I had two responsibilities overseeing operations the first one would be facilities and the second one being budget and as the board is well aware during this year we have worked diligently on developing a capital project and that was brought to us for culture inclusive community using a lot of feedback from our staff to develop that Capital project so that's how that was an important role for the facilities piece also Chris Marshall our director of facilities has implemented a process for com for staff members to share daily minor repairs and cleaning issues for the buildings so that is how we have implemented culture for facilities in
addition we worked on the budget again we had a lot of well-established shared decision making teams prior but we have increased and communicated while our budget development process we have tapped on staff and and asked them to provide feedback for the the budget so again my contributions to well the business offices and the operations Department's contribution to culture was much easier than the next groups so next is Dorothy hi I'm Dorothy d'angel the assistant superintendent um for personnel I had to think about that for a minute um so I'm going to speak tonight about the staff Wellness portion of the culture plan Andrea Tate who is our Wellness coordinator does an outstanding job and one of our goals this year was to send out a survey which we did in the fall and the focus
of that survey was to look at two different aspects of the staff Wellness one was around feedback regarding the types of Wellness experiences that staff would like knowing that we want them to build that into their naturally occurring lifestyle and then how to make experiences more accessible to staff and as a result of that survey there was an increased number of offerings before and after school and Andrea offered some new sessions for example she did a meditation and relaxation session that was four different sessions that she offered to staff another indicator of Staff Wellness is the VTA Wellness survey and that's a really great piece of information for the District administration to have and really drives our conversation around staff Wellness because it not only looks at Wellness experiences but really those things in the
workplace and those things that are positives in the workplace and those stressors and how we can really help support them in that and then another piece of data that we gather throughout the year are those administrators that are closest to the source or building administrators touching base with their staff and those individual conversations that the directors and the other assistant superintendents have with staff and I know Dr terranova meets with staff on a regular basis as well so there's been a huge Focus this year and certainly there will be continue to be next year on getting feedback from staff so that we can Target how we're approaching staff Wellness another area that we wanted to shore up and expand was our Wellness committee and the wellness committee has been expanded to include so we pre
we had a wellness coordinator and two Wellness ambassadors and then anyone else who wanted to be interested in helping to support that work but through a more formalized process and I'll talk a little bit about the teacher leader job descriptions that we worked on this year we added members that were already teacher leaders they already hold that role that can support this work that just made sense so the k6 and 712 PE and health teacher leaders will be members of our Wellness committee next year as will the k-6 health teacher and the nursing K-12 teacher leader and we're really going to be looking at our the next piece of this puzzle is really what structures can we put in place to increase engagement and wellness habits and just access to experiences so really looking at
that data and our goal was also to just expand the team in a way the committee in a way that we had more representation across all of the buildings Andrea is amazing but there's a lot of people here and so we want to make sure that we have more more members on our team staff attendance is certainly an indicator of wellness and this year attendance Trends have been reviewed monthly across the year and systems have been put in place to support this realm as well as individuals and their needs so that we can make sure that we're putting supports in place so everyone feels supported another goal this year was really to formalize gathering information that would support staff retention and support for staff so an exit survey has been implemented it was drafted this
year and it's in our new Frontline system and that's been sent out to any retirees or any staff that are resigning for other reasons and retire people have been invited to have in-person interviews but I mean I don't know why they wouldn't want to come and meet with HR but if they don't want to come and meet with me they can fill out that survey but we're really encouraging them so we'll have data on both those in-person interviews in the exit survey and we'll look at that Trend data again looking for those areas that we're doing really well looking for any departments for example that we might be seeing and exodus from and then looking at those areas that we really have to shore up and then a lot of our work this year has
also been around organizational systems so really working on getting the organizational charts in order we had a new administrative structure this year so it was really looking at how those administrative positions feed into each other and then we also did that work when we were looking at teacher leader positions so instead of looking at teacher leader positions just in terms of the building because we do have building level teacher leaders how do those feed into let's say you know the ECS into the primary school in the intermediate and then across case six and then at the secondary level the same thing seven eight into nine twelve and then how do those all feed due in into each other K-12 and then how do we work with our teacher leaders to support the work of administration
so we've done the cursory work around that we we know how things fit together and next we'll come working on the plan of creating opportunities for that work to happen across the district between those groups and then I have to thank all of the administrative team for all of their work on the teacher leader job descriptions so we have 44 teacher leader positions in the district that can really do a lot to support our work and we really need to clearly Define those positions so that we can maximize their potential to support the work of the district and that was really a collective effort of every single administrator so hats off to them so we have created job descriptions for all of the teacher leader positions in the district those have been shared out with
all of the teacher leaders so that piece is done in terms of job descriptions we have a lot more to do another responsibility that I had was to come up with a plan for how we're going to address job descriptions across the district and right now I'm trying to determine what's the next step for next year because it's a big job and we want to do it well so I'll continue to enlist the help of my administrative colleagues as we move forward with that work Karen is going to speak next so you can kind of see how this year really is around some of those basic needs right making sure that Wellness is prioritized some of those systems are in place because when there aren't those systems that that spikes areas of need areas of
stress that's unneeded another foundational area in the under the culture pillar is the um uh start of the district's diversity equity and inclusion committee and so over 30 stakeholders over the course of this year have come together to really unpack what we mean when we say diversity inclusion what does that look like what does that mean for us here in Victor and thinking about the recommendations because the ultimate goal of this group is to forward recommendations for a multi-year plan to the superintendent and so they're working through some of the components in the Strategic plan really unpacking them and thinking about how this work will be best accomplished what are the recommendations that they can make there's an upcoming meeting next week on the 14th that will wrap some of those important strategic plan items
and we anticipate coming together again throughout the summer to further deepen that work to really help produce that that multi-year what the outcome would be in terms of a multi-year plan the second pillar of the Strategic plan all centers around learning and instruction uh last month you heard from me about all of the phenomenal curricular work that's happening across the district this year in support of the management plan it really was about getting a sense of the State of the State what is what is the current state of curriculum where do we have curriculum that's documented that's guaranteed and viable and where don't we and what can we do in terms of developing the plan to really make sure that across Pre-K 12 we have a guaranteed and viable curriculum and a process that's consistent
to support the development of that curriculum that really grounds work in research in standards in planning backwards if you will thinking about what are those outcomes how we're going to measure them and then what might be the learning experiences that we would use to achieve those so the curricular work is ongoing lots happening this summer in all of the areas really and some exciting projects that I shared with you last time in terms of instruction really anchoring again back to that Foundation thinking about how are we approaching goal setting how are we using data both as a system and at the classroom level to drive our instruction and that frankly is is a new approach here to really hone in we've had some interrupted years in terms of data covid kind of skews some of
that information so coming back to that basis and really seeing where our kids are breaking down our kids into all of the different types of Learners that we serve and really using that information to better our practice thinking about instructional leadership how we're informing instruction in the classroom how we're using structures like PLC our learning communities of teachers coming together around a common goal how can we bolster the the impact of that work so lots of instructional leadership helping to support that and then we know that there are with five wonderful buildings across the campus there's a danger of having some islands or silos and so really bringing consistency to some of our processes in terms of academic intervention in terms of how we promote literacy best practices how we're using inquiry in classrooms and
so this year has been really again laying a foundation for some of those practices and all the while because these things don't happen great curriculum work and strong instruction doesn't happen unless we attend to the teacher as a learner so how are we growing and helping support our teachers whether it's diving into some of those research-based breast practices using the new contractual professional learning time and finding the right fit when we ask teachers to extend their day to come together around a specific topic or theme how can we really maximize the utilization of that time to grow them as professionals so that they can be as aligned to what our students need as possible and that work again it's it's cyclical it just feeds into one another and the and the management plan this year
really helped to kick off the work on these systems to forecast for next year we'll continue with that curriculum review process and continued curriculum writing we do want to begin looking at programs as a whole so it's not so much now about patching the holes in the dam but looking at the whole structure I'm looking at our programs and seeing how we can best review those definitely want to dive in more around instruction now that curriculum is established in places how is that curriculum really being implemented in the classroom and how are we measuring that implementation using formative assessment and feedback as a way to drive student learning grading practices is in the management plan breaking down and understanding what are some of those best practices but that is work that's a marathon not a
Sprint and so we really need to be mindful in making sure we have strong assessment practices as as we dive into grading and then instructional best practices continuing that professional Learning Journey really making student-centered instruction come to life and then last but not least to forecast for next year when we have that curriculum when instruction is solid in every classroom across the district if students don't make progress then what can we do differently and how do we really hone in to some of our response to intervention best practices I'm going to turn it over now to Karen Ryan who'll fill you in on the third pillar student supports and opportunities good evening everyone um our first pillar under student supports and opportunities was really around processes and supports to support student growth so we look
at four areas and we the first area we really looked at was evaluate the committee on special education and as we analyzed that area as a department we identified the roles of the committee on special education members and in defining the rules we shifted our initial referrals and our program review csc's to the directors of k6 and 712 so all those CSE meetings will be chaired by our directors we continue to use a team approach for our interviews that includes our school psychologist artosis and directors we also really worked with the Department around using data driven decisions to determine our extended school year the least restrictive environment programs for students as well as the aid support a student may receive throughout the day um in addition to all of that we built in some compliance
processes in meetings to ensure that we were meeting the deadlines and the regs and we were determining as a team what evaluations need to be done for reevaluation and as those meetings evolved throughout the year they turned in problem-solving meetings as well especially when we were trying to determine what programs students need for the following school year another pillar we looked at was evaluating our current gaps in the Continuum of special education so as a department we looked at the Continuum K-12 and from that we added our integrated cotop program at grades K through 9. we expanded the 12-1-1 at the primary to a full day program it was for it had been housed or was delivering mostly Ela and math but we realized that some of those students needed a more supportive program throughout
the day we expanded course offerings of our 15-1 program at the 712 level to social studies and Science and then we also expanded course offerings 912 to allow for students with disabilities to take more courses and Achieve that Region's diploma when we looked at evaluating existing resources and trainings we really um and that went along with our Continuum of services we made a decision as a department and District to add teacher assistance to our integrated co-top program and to our 1213 program this will allow for instruction in the classroom to be elevated teachers in the in the ICT the Gen Ed and the special education teacher we'll plan the instruction and the teacher assistant will be able to implement instruction under their guidance to small groups of students and that will be similar to what
will happen in the 1213 we did shift some additional supports to our 811 and our 612 program we added an additional program Aid to be able to support consistency for those students who need those positive feedback around pro-social skills being able to implement some of their behavioral intervention plans and also to support with instruction we did Implement some instructional professional development to our 1213 teachers and we paired our school psychologists and our behavioral specialist as a team to support our high needs classrooms to support students who are struggling with social emotional needs we used our tosa and our team leaders to implement application from our department meetings so that teachers would be able to put those practices in place in their classroom we did analyze student programming through a data review we used multiple data
sets to look at this we looked at our the least restricted environment we looked at our independent um evaluations that were done by outside Consultants we looked at a regions data we looked at Benchmark data k6 um we've implemented 912 cohort reviews and that really is looking at students with disabilities in terms of how what pathway and what track are they on for graduation and the goal is that we're able to intervene and provide supports and services so they can really achieve that Region's diploma and we built supports within our high needs classrooms to be able to support students to stay in District and also to return students from out of District we have our out-of-district placements continue to have some wait lists so that is it's not a challenge to us because what we
really did look at is if these students had remained in District and they couldn't access an auto District what do we have to do for next school year so with the support of the leadership staff and the directors and discussion with parents we have plans for at least four students who right now are kind of influxed between an in-district and add a district placement but the plan is for them to start with us if a placement on the outside opens up we will be able to transition them the next pillar that we talked about was really in Sharing High effective supports to our students and really looking at the procedures and the philosophies around that so we evaluated our related Services K-12 and as a result of that we did add some additional staff to
be able to support the caseloads and be able to support direct instructions to the students we added an additional psych at the intermediate level we added an additional speech position K3 we add in an additional OT position that would allow for intermediate to have a full-time OT part-time at the high school and pick up any overflow of the caseloads at the OT level if needed we did do some research around related Service delivery models and we've worked to adopt a three to one model this model allows for direct instruction from our otspt speech music therapists um and counseling to provide direct instructions to students for three weeks in a row that third week is application or consult that allows for our providers to go into a classroom to observe student plan a co-teach model with
one of their colleagues Observer pull a small group do a class lesson and so research is really showing that that is an effective way to take the pull out services and really integrate them in the classroom and get a higher level of growth so we're very excited about that and then um oh I should have switched I'm sorry and then I apologize and then and this one here what we're really doing is looking at student social emotional well-being and so and that's K-12 and that's for all of our students so we've added to our SEL survey questions that we give a survey in the fall um and in January and at the end of the year and now surveys around our social emotional learning but we added for the 712 level questions around belonging because
we really wanted student voice in terms of how they feel they belong in their school community and then though that information will be analyzed this summer so that we can plan supports and classroom lessons from our counselors at the 712 level in addition we participated in the Ontario at-risk youth assessment grade 7 and 12 that data will give us individual student data from our district around some of the at-risk um Aces that are against our students or our students are facing along as where we sit with the county that survey does two things it gives us information how we can support our students but it also helps the county plan for services we added um uh we're in the process of hiring a drug and alcohol counselor for K-12 that person's position is really designed
to help us analyze the data that we know about our students and really help the district identify proactive interventions to support students and those who are demonstrating substance abuse needs we can connect them with the right resources provide supports in school helps with Transitions and so that is an exciting position that we're looking for and then another area that we looked at was shifting some supports to add an additional social work at the high school to help with that overall social emotional well-being for our students when we look at our strategic plan and areas of folk of continued Focus we really want to look at our CSC pre-referral model if we this summer we're looking to analyze the initial referrals to CSC this year and really look at patterns and trends of what students were
brought to CSC and when they were brought to the committee on special education what were the interventions that were in place and this will really inform some of the RTI work that Karen spoke about so that if there's trends that were missing then we can work with our whole school to be able to identify earlier interventions for them and then in terms of professional development for our ICT we are on a three-year plan for our professional development all of our integrated co-taught teams have provided have been engaged in a full day planning around what is co-teaching what are Best Practices how do you co-teach and then they're going to be provided some summer planning time to be able to work is with their co-teachers and then next year BOCES two we've contracted with them they're
going to come out and be instructional coaches and use a coaching cycle with our teachers as well as our administrative staff we've done some work with instructional reading and we're pairing with our as partners and that will continue next year and our student social emotional well-being we're going to analyze like I said that at-risk behavior in our social emotion learning Behavior to be able to support programs in interventions for our students last little bit I promise after listening to all of the work in uh the umbrella of students Awards and opportunities it's pretty amazing all of the all of the work that's moving forward as we wrap the year one management plan we have conducted the analysis where we stood with all of the indicators how did we do what are those evidence of accomplishment
that you've heard about tonight and so much more and looking to see what are those things that we didn't quite get as far as we thought we would to roll over into year two we're starting the process now to work with stakeholder groups the admin team had a first crack at it to take a look at what are those areas that we are writing action steps for for year two we've started that work and we'll continue to use our wonderful shared decision making teams and stakeholder teams to continue to refine those action steps we'll have a draft ready by mid-july for administrative retreat in hopes that we'll you use August and some of those shared decision making teams to finalize to bring to you at the August board meeting that year two management plan to
really kick off the year so with all of that we thank you and ask if you have any questions for any one of us questions board I think this is a Karen Fincher question so when we're looking at the great sorry I remember looking at the grading practices and a lot of that revision work that's being done is there any thought as to a timeline or possible revision of report cards so yeah that is Elizabeth that's a great question so there has been some work already this year so under the direction of Kristen Williamson really working with our k6 teams to look at the standards within the ELA component of the report card to really hone in and refine those particular standards and to also take a look at the way non-standards are reported you
know how how are some of the behaviors reported on the report card effort and and attention those kinds of things and so that work has has started it's gone to school tool edge attack who will upload the revised template for us to start the year next year math science is starting to have some collaborative teams come together to further refine those standards since k6 those report cards are standard based they're they're just in that revision process 712 it will be a much heavier lift so we're starting some of the work but look to really dive a little more deeply even next year and expand to areas like PE art music Etc other questions all right thank you for that review and update appreciate it em 7D are we gonna we're gonna get a copy on
that I don't know uh question are we going to get a copy of this presentation I'll put I post all presentations the day after the board meeting yeah thank you here's your answer thank you okay where was I 7D first reading of the following policy code of conduct policy I had a chance to take a look at it any comments or questions at this point okay seeing none item 7e mentors for new board of education members we've got two new people and let's talk about who can be mentors for these folks you don't have a say in this I'm sorry yeah I'm gonna say um I I found it very beneficial to have Elizabeth as a mentor of my first year because she had just completed her first year and I think having that kind
of knowledge is really helpful to our first year board members so I would volunteer to Mentor Brian for because I believe uh Christopher Adam had spoken about you mentoring him I'll just say Adam did Cyrus spoke to me about that I'm more than happy to Mentor him officially and also just from the fact I mean I remember my first year you have an official mentor but really we are a collective in that regard it's a package deal you're stuck with all of us pretty much is what I said I'm happy to yeah okay we have two volunteers for two new board members anybody want to arm wrestle the matter one of these I'm good I think you have our full support thank you um item eight is meeting reports Monroe County School Board Association committee
reports anything proud well we did have the end of the year Monroe County School Board Association of the Year recognition dinner and it was nice to come together and say a bit of gratitude to Trisha and some of the other board members across the county that have been doing such great work advocating for our part of the state and some of our our surrounding districts struggle with the same problems and and those who don't support Victor in their in their fight for you know the work that we're doing so that was a that was a great evening yes uh Kristen Dr Terra Nova Patricia and myself attended that uh annual meeting this was the 54th annual meeting of Monroe County School boards Association um no remarks by the outgoing president and then election of the
new president who is now Matt mattress who was vice president last year um and then of course some updates by the Committees um I even had a message from New York State School Board Association Barry otherwise who is a director of member relations so we still have that connection to New York State School Board Association through this organization there's no question that being part of Monroe County School Board Association is in is good for Victor right so anything else any other committee standing committees audit committee met today and we did a review Lisa you want to go further with that we did a review of the reserves officers and thank you to Derek who and Maureen and everyone who contributed to the graphics making it very simple for the non-budgetary people to really understand all
the different buckets and understanding how monies are disseminated and how you can't dip into one to solve another problem and how we are fiscally I mean that's our charge to be fiscally responsible but to really understand how far we have come and how we can look forward to Capital Improvement projects where there's very little impact on the community and it it supports all of the work and the Strategic plan and the management plan and the curriculum and building classrooms and I mean this we are it's I feel like we're in this train pulled out of the station and we are moving and it's really it's really great but to be able to understand budgetarily what's going on we appreciate all the work coming out of the financial office okay anything else I have actually a
question just with the financial piece being brought up not for this meeting but at what point or in which venue I don't know would it be a workshop or a future board internal board meeting for this group in partnership with the superintendent and Mr valise to look at what are if any options for us to pursue the approximate 170 million dollars that the district did not receive since the freezing of state aid and if that's just I'm just became the Chief Executive Officer of Fantasyland or if that's something that you know we the district could look into some sort of whether it's advocacy or if I know Dr Young going back years brought it up at prior board meetings and I just wonder if that's a place that we can revisit well absolutely we can
revisit it the likelihood of ever seeing that money is probably fairly remote um uh I don't see much success going down that Avenue however we could still kick it around see if there's any opportunities open to us yeah we could do that I would think Workshop would be a good venue for that thank you you can still still keep advocating for it I mean no you got I live by that no you got and if we keep going with that who knows they may they may do something something's better than nothing okay anything else for the good of the district item nine upcoming events meeting reports we've got the organizational meeting July 13th May 23. as was mentioned earlier graduation this coming Sunday we have one more group next week yes Transportation yeah we do
yep Wednesday Transportation building Transportation facilities and the Operations Center buildings yeah you people are going to make me get up early again aren't you unfortunately 15. as early as like yeah it's not too early 15. on my calendar yeah no it is just the time later start the normal okay do I have a motion to adjourn Trisha uh best thing she wants to do second I'll second Lisa all in favor say aye aye any opposed we've had a meeting thank you everyone
