which is phenomenal uh and and kids who not just are academically proficient but show service towards others and High character and ethics so that's a large number 96 kids being inducted into our National Honor Society before the holiday five singers participated in the Rochester holiday Pops at Eastman theater with the RPO they're uh Isabelle bright Katie Carroll Enzo De Jesus Ian Pritchard and Anna Lee Van manen they were as part of the if anybody was able to see the holiday Rochester pops actually Mrs Elliott was yeah was with was near me actually when I came in I saw her but our five of that incredible chorus were members of the Victor coral corral so they did a great job so congratulations to them we're continuing to prepare for competitions in areas such as first robotics
which is occurring soon the DECA competition where we actually have 80 students going to the states Winter Guard and vipe they're going to have an incredible home show on February 4th and uh the Scotts on Memorial Tournament which was going to occur in December uh was was postponed because of the weather that's shifted to January 21st where it's going to be a girls and boys basketball game against Canandaigua and it's at uh it's at the college right yeah it's in it's in Canandaigua I believe it's January 21st I heard so we'll get we'll we'll put that all over the internet in terms of the location um I might be at flcc but that's January 21st and again it's in memory of Scott son who is an incredible uh person in this district and in Canandaigua
and in his memory uh and uh lots of uh fundraiser money goes to Great organizations also a huge thank you to all of our service uh that our staff and students have done towards uh helping others during the holiday season including food drives can drives raising money for special events special thanks to the high school cares Club the student governments of both the junior high and the senior high and our Key Club we have one of the largest key clubs in New York state so they do a tremendous job as well so huge thank you to all of the service done by our students second update diversity equity and inclusion committee we are starting that off on January 23rd it's a committee of staff students community members three Board of Ed members and the committee
has over 30 individuals in our first meeting like I said is January 23rd this diversity Equity inclusion committee comes out of our five-year strategic plan and it was one of our first year objectives of the 2223 management plan the charge of the committee includes analysis of multiple data sets to determine the extent of Equitable and inclusive access to a variety of areas such as AP courses dual enrollment courses music ensembles performing groups and participation in athletics field trips and other extracurricular experiences we're also going to look at special class enrollment and certainly graduation outcomes additionally annual student subgroup performance data will be analyzed so we can look again at the extent of Equitable and inclusive access to these we also are going to review and recommend hiring practices that are supportive of building a diverse
Workforce that represents our school Community unpack the New York State culturally responsive sustaining educational framework and we're going to review District curriculum to ensure that both content and instruction aligns with inclusive and Equitable research-based practices it's a lot to to bite into but it's a really important committee it's a committee that will advise me as superintendent on both what's working in areas of growth and recommendations will be made to me and we're going to keep the board constantly updated around the work of this committee so we're excited about that third quick update today you're going to see another and I don't want to steal anybody's Thunder but we've been doing a lot of updates every month on our management plan which again comes from the five-year strategic plan that's focused on culture it's focused on
learning and instruction and it's focused on student supports and opportunities we've heard updates already this year on curriculum and instruction and some of the improvements we're making in those areas certainly special education and all the work that's being done there social emotional social emotional learning as well as social emotional supports that help with that we're also those are all initiatives major to our management plan in addition you're going to hear us discuss and we've heard you've heard some of it around facilities planning Safety and Security and certainly our budget preparation which also has specific goals tied to our management plan so everything we're doing is related to the work that was done by that large committee and through the community input in the creation of that strategic plan and then over the next two months
this month and next month we're going to put a little bit of a Twist to the presentations where this month it's going to be focused on all the work that's being done at the elementary level and next month it'll be all the work that's focused on the secondary level tied to the management plan and that work will cross culture learning and learning and instruction and student supports and opportunities but we want to make sure that by the time we get to the end of the school year you've had a comprehensive focus on what we're doing and what we're trying to accomplishment accomplish in relation to our management plan and my last update is really just a reminder to everyone and I know you know this that Monday is Martin Luther King Jr Day Martin Luther
King Day honors the slain civil rights leader who dedicated his life to achieving equity for people of all colors he wrote spoke marched and stood up for what he believed in now what's unique about this holiday and I said this last year at this time is that it's the only holiday that we know that's designated as a national day of service and that is really important because it not only honors the life and work of Dr Martin Luther King Jr but encourages all Americans to volunteer and improve their communities which is a great thing so Monday we celebrate the strides our country has made with racial equality and also reflect on things that we still need to make in terms of progress in these areas so it's an incredibly important holiday and I just hope
that everybody gets a chance to reflect on what a great person Martin Luther King Jr was that's my superintendent's update thank you Dr terranova item four presentations recognitions none at this time I always like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues on this board for the work you do to do the business of this District always impressed with your contributions and talent and certainly I appreciate it I appreciate sitting adjacent to all of you at this table thank you uh public participation we had no one sign up that's the reason I didn't read the reminder so hopefully uh we're still good with no one wishing to speak okay item six acceptance of consent items we have six a through wait a minute I can look at this h so first I'll entertain a motion
to accept the consent items please a motion Debbie second Christopher any comments about this item on our agenda these items uh I just want to mention the Personnel agenda um so we are losing Deborah push to retirement who is a credible Secretary of the Early Childhood school and I don't want to obviously steal any of Rob's Thunder at all so I'm just going to mention how much she has supported me personally as superintendent she's fantastic she's actually retiring at the end of this month uh and would love it if she decided to sub for us after that but that's really her call so I just just a big thank you to Deb she's just a fantastic person and has done a great job at the ECS okay other comments yeah and just again thank you
to the community for donations and considering our district and helping our students uh in the music department French horn was donated and a five-foot score table was donated as well and what moved me personally I just um it's just very indicative of the care and the culture of our community we had two Anonymous donors um put money into the district cafeteria fund to help offset some student debt for students who had outstanding balances in the cafeteria and again taking care of our own so whoever you are are grateful thank you for that other comments see none all in favor say aye aye aye any opposed extensions motion carried thank you item 7A campus news I bring you our famous and talented administrators who will be first foreign good evening everyone Heidi Rabb principal at the
primary school good to see you local author Elizabeth fock will be visiting Victor Primary School on February 17th she will speak to being an author she's also going to talk a little bit about writing and Publishing her latest book mirror mirror is on display at our library at VPS it it's displayed as a story walk and the special thing about this particular story is that it's Illustrated with lap size art quilts so the librarian Michelle Lindsay installed this exhibit in the first week in January and when you visit our library you can see all of the quilts around the entire Library it's quite a spectacle it will be up when you visit the primary school in February so I'm very excited for you to see that it'll be hanging until February break many classes are
enjoying both the Quilted story walk and her other books lettuce North Star and Council fire the message of her current poem book that is up around the primary school or the library is about self-acceptance and it's based on focusing on our abilities instead of criticizing ourselves Ms Falk says saying kind things to my face and body made me feel so much better that I decided to write a book about it that suggest such Daily Mirror comments as my you look smart today or which friend will you laugh with today our librarian says the children notice the art immediately as they walk into the library and are amazed with the details the message of positive self-talk is needed and sweetly delivered it's been wonderful and it's a colorful gift to have in our library right now
I look forward to you seeing that soon I also have Brian Gee's update from the junior high tonight to address the social emotional needs of our students they're focusing on tools to build relationships starting tomorrow they'll be working with small teams of teachers to provide them with concrete examples to intentionally teach and assess how students can build positive relationships with each other the goal is to focus on relationship skills throughout February and work with their teacher leaders to identify the next social emotional learning competency that they'll focus on as a building there are student council met today with members of Building Council to talk about creating a series of events and activities for the third quarter these events and activities are designed to be inclusive of all Victor junior high students and to serve and
further strengthen the connections at Victor Junior High and his last update is that the junior high staff just wants to thank all of you for visiting the school and taking time to go into all of the classrooms Mr gee said that he hopes that the visit provided you all with a snapshot of the different programs and courses throughout the building thank you good evening Ashley silicola principal at VIs it's been an exciting start to the new year at Vis we welcome students back to the building by kicking off our character trait of the month perseverance one of our assistant principals Tom cheevers starts each month by sharing the trait and definition on the morning announcements and our student council partners with our administrative team to create challenges to reinforce the character trait throughout the month
this opportunity allows our students to lead and serve as positive role models in our school while also being part of the decision making process students are already impressing us with their ability to work through challenges and obstacles it's also a busy season for our music department at Vis fourth fifth and sixth grade Orchestra had their first performance of the year last month a highlight was the last piece where all the students grades four through six all performed together that group is comprised of over 200 beginner and experienced students it's pretty amazing and talking with the teacher that even within our fourth grade group we have quite a group of beginners very first time they've ever played mixed with fourth graders who are returning to us with quite a bit of experience and the group started
the year in separate ensembles and then recently came together to make up one Orchestra which is really unique to watch and the teachers did an incredible job merching them together but so did the students so the beginners really took a lot of the learning from the older well in this case fourth grade students but experienced students and they came together to make up one fourth grade ensemble um really amazing to have them all on stage at the end of the song playing together and this past Tuesday the sixth grade band and chorus performed our music and technology department worked together to live stream the event which was great for everyone watching at home we're so proud of our students and our staff members for all their hard work and effort and their recent performances they
continue to grow and amaze us in their dedication and progress today our talented sixth graders perform for their peers in their first in-school concert in the junior high Auditorium their peers clapped and cheered at the end of the performance enjoying each moment of their classmates success and finally I just want to share a quick update on the construction project of the new library at VIs the walls are starting to come in and we can begin to really visualize the new space right as you walk into VIs very very exciting and a huge thank you to Chris Marshall in campus construction not easy on their end to work through a construction project at the intermediate level in any school and they just a lot of hard work and effort and Partnerships I think them and we
are very excited in a couple short months hopefully by March fingers crossed that we will be going into our new library very soon thank you thank you good evening my name is Rob DeRose the principal at the Early Childhood school since the last board meeting the Victor Early Childhood school has been filled with joy throughout the holiday season we've had many events bringing families fun and new learning together within the walls of the Early Childhood school our Universal pre kindergarten school and our teachers hosted their holiday fun day and the holiday sing-along the holiday sing-along was a fantastic show and the dedication commitment and Excellence of our entire upk team was on full display kindergarten celebrated the holiday season with a winter wonderland which took our students and many family volunteers on a journey around
the school visiting different classrooms to participate in a variety of winter themed activities games and projects first graders participated in holidays around the world by visiting different classrooms throughout the school to learn about holidays their games and their traditions looking ahead to the coming weeks The Early Childhood school is excited to begin sending home positive behavior postcards to our families to celebrate and recognize the amazing students that we have here in the Victor Early Childhood school Laura Reynolds our assistant principal and the school Community team are working hard on a new community reads event which will happen in February focused on random acts of kindness and of course we're all really excited for tomorrow's PTSA family night which is pajamas popcorn and a movie in our Auditorium we're thrilled to have the first family night
back at the vecs since the 1920 school year and finally I'd like to recognize like Dr Terra Nova did Miss Deborah push for her amazing contribution to the Victor Central School District she's had a Monumental impact and while I've only worked with her since August 29th I will very finely remember all those days she brings to our school such kindness selflessness organization she's knowledgeable she has been the heart of the Vex for many many years and she will leave a Long Long and Lasting positive impact thank you you hi everybody I'm Brian ciesel principal at Victor Senior High School I've got a couple of updates that I want to share with everyone from this past month the first is that one of our world language teachers Jackie boss is being honored by the Salvation Army
of Greater Rochester at a breakfast on January 26th at the Hyatt Regency Jackie's husband Thad passed away of colon cancer on December 20th in 2008 and as the anniversary of his death was approaching she said she knew it was going to be tough for her and her for her children she had twin seven-year-olds and an 11 year old at the time so while she knew that she said that she knew the family would be feeling sad that they wanted to make sure that the day would be important for another reason so every year on December 20th her entire family goes and they rang a bell for the Salvation Army and I didn't know this but the Salvation Army has like these friendly competitions so last year Jackie and her family took first place in what
they call the family and friends category for the amount of money that they raised so that's why she's she and her family on behalf of her late husband they're going to be honored uh in the in January on the 26th at the highest so I just I wanted to make sure that we that we honored her for that our school nurse Kim Spitzer and the middle medical Explorers Club hosted a group from the imals to speak with our students we have community members as well as family members of some staff and students who are affected by ALS otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's Disease and about 60 students from our medical Explorers Club med tech class and our hockey team attended the presentation this afternoon Dr terranova was there as well it was a live Zoom
interaction with not only people who have ALS but as well as caregivers and those who have lost somebody to ALS I mean I would encourage anyone to go to their website their website is extremely powerful it provides interesting facts and statistics and although they have a place to donate it really encourages and promotes Community Action to help educate and fight against ALS and it's definitely worth visiting their website so I do want to thank Mrs Spitzer for helping to raise awareness and action here at Victor and the last thing I want to highlight is an academic piece this year I've had the opportunity to make a few visits to Mr honkovic's law class Mr honkovic's been a member of our social studies department for about 10 years and he's doing an absolutely amazing job with
this course he's had it for about two years now and he's totally revamped what the course is all about it's now a choice based approach to learning for all levels of students from those who might struggle with school to those who Excel so when you go into this class you would think that it's an AP level course with not only the engagement but also the work product of the students this class is proof that learning can be engaging intrinsic intrinsically motivating and that research can be fascinating and I've sat in on a few sessions of student presentations on personal research topics of interest to them topics such as the look back a lot the impact of what they call look back laws and statute of limitation when it comes to assault cases how the medical
industry bills for prescription drugs as well as the influence of drug cartels this shows the impact that it has on our citizens fate and federal and state checks and balances and interest groups and the kids absolutely love it so I just want to highlight Mr hongevik as a great example of promoting Civic engagement educated participation in education for our students so those are my highlights for this month thank you great thank you and thank you to all the administrators you uh with sharing this information you give us purpose for sitting here so we appreciate that thank you um item 7B now is new course approval it's actually two courses AP pre-calculus and the history of sport so we have Karen Kristen Carrie and Don presenting good evening everyone and thank you so much for hearing
about these exciting new courses before we launch into the overviews though I do want to take a minute just to recognize the hard work of the Victor curriculum Council the council over the last few meetings this year so far has really looked to revamp the course proposal process to make sure that courses coming forward to be included in our course catalog really Foster not only deep content knowledge but also build some of those really critical skills for high school and Beyond problem-solving collaboration communication writing speaking presenting and so as I stated to my memo and Dr to Dr Terra Nova curriculum Council heard both of these presentations and was so thrilled to endorse them and bring them to you here tonight so I'm going to turn it over to Carrie and Don to tell us
a little more about AP pre-calc hi I'm Dawn Knapp I am the senior high teacher leader in the math department um so as you can see what we are proposing and would like to look at doing for next year is to offer in place of our current pre-calc and pre-calc honors an AP level course and um sure do you mind going to the or am I really you didn't tell me I was doing that where am I I learned a lot about technology during the pandemic I do want you all to know that and I am competent um but I am kind of the old lady in the department Liquor on Kia I apologize we should have turned that on for you this is not how I planned this gang all right fun to watch
so far wait till the show really gets going okay all right look at that all right okay so um just to give you a little bit of history and kind of why and and hopefully between Carrie and I you'll get a good sense of that but also to share a little bit of history with you this summer it became known to us that college board which of course is the organization that oversees the AP courses in AP testing was going to start offering this coming school year in AP pre-calculus so of course we always want to pay attention to New Opportunities and new offerings for our students and so that really caught our attention so Carrie Karen and I and with Brian support really started to dig in and say let's find out about this
course and see what it can offer to help you understand of where would it fit into our current programming in the top row there you would see a student who is considered on grade level right taking math eight and eighth grade and then a very typical pathway through high school there through the top and so at this point you can see we currently offer for our 12th grade students we offer a pre-calculus course that is a Gemini course which is dual enrollment with flcc we are really interested in keeping that pathway it has been a very productive and effective pathway for our grade level students the opportunity to earn some college credit through the dual enrollment through the pre-calc Gemini and honestly as a parent of two children who went that pathway I know it's
very beneficial and that transferred nicely to their college is then in the second or the bottom two rows that would be our students who are accelerated and take algebra in eighth grade as they move into high school they either go into Regents geometry or geometry honors and there are some protocols and things in place to help kind of decide which is which way students go you can kind of see the Continuum there and so where you see the pre-calculus and pre-calculus honors that's what we have right now that is exactly where AP pre-calculus and AP pre-calculus honors would fit in so we're not looking at a major change or shift in our programming they would fit very nicely into there and then as you can see in the middle row students who have taken our
current pre-calculus go into AP Calculus a b precalculus honors into the BC the difference for those of you who do not know AP Calculus a b is basically calc 1 and BC is calc 1 and calc 2 combined and part of what makes that possible for us to do for our students between September and may when that testing date is to get two semesters of calculus then is the honors component does cover some of the calculus curriculum so the pre-calculus honors teacher so if you're wondering kind of what's the difference between those two to the honors goes a little deeper with some topics and actually has a couple additional units so that when the students that are coming into BC start the year they can hit the ground really running and be ready to get
two semesters of calculus in so that's what we currently offer and again what we're proposing would fit right into those current spaces so when we sat down with the math department to talk about um whether or not we wanted to engage in this course change for this upcoming year we kind of went through some of the advantages and disadvantages just of making this shift in the first year of college board offering this course we could wait a year kind of hold out or do we go right in kind of full bore at the beginning of it and kind of talk through some of our pieces and what we started to really kind of realize is that there's a small amount of misalignment between our pre-calc courses and our celt courses because those are AP college
board based very application and contextual and you know our pre-calc courses border more on the line of procedural so we also came across some data that resonated pretty strongly with us so um you know this was kind of a good Tipping Point for us to make that decision so we have a lot of students at Victor that head into a STEM related pathway around Sciences math technology engineering and there's a lot of research that shows that one of the biggest barriers to students maintaining and staying and completing those programs is around some of those Gateway courses one of which being pre or one of which being calculus in college and just because they take calculus in high school doesn't mean they're necessarily going to get that calculus Credit in college you might have to repeat
that piece but it was it was hard for us to kind of recognize that 40 percent of students who enter with a college I'm into a college pathway is a stem major 40 switched to a non-stem major or fall short of the requirements and for us that was kind of a Tipping Point recognizing that if we can make a change to potentially better prepare those students to be successful in that pathway of programming around stem careers then we had a duty and a kind of desire and energy to kind of do that change sooner than later feeling like delaying that one or two more years wasn't something we wanted to do for our students we wanted to make sure we were giving them access as early as possible to aligned kind of rigorous contextual based
program so some of the advantages that we identified to moving to an AP pre-calc and AP pre-calc honors is its very next Generation kind of based it's wrapped around phenomena you're not just necessarily learning about a concept and just focusing on the five steps around it it's really learning and exploring that math concept through application it's exciting and very rarely do students come across you know um don't recognize where they're going to be able to use that kind of mathematics which is an exciting shift in our AP in our pre-calculus courses um the framework for the ape pre-calc also focuses on a lot of those functions that will be foundational in some of those other stem-based programmings around physics Health Sciences social sciences and data Sciences so some of the advantages that we felt like
a lot of it is preparing our students for what they'll encounter after Victor High School which was nice knowing that we were kind of filling in some of those gaps early one of the things I'd like to kind of help explain is Kerry mentioned you can see there on that fourth bullet about a shift from more of a procedure-based learning to application-based learning so you might ask well why is your precalculcus right now just procedure-based learning and pre-calculus is kind of a funny course right algebra geometry Algebra 2 all have a very prescribed curriculum through the Regents and and the state pre-calculus from one school to another school there's always some commonality but it's kind of well this person taught this for a lot of years and they really liked this topic and they included
it and for us part of our history we of course offered the IB diploma for quite some time and so part of our issue was our IB math was actually co-seated with pre-calc and calculus and really precalculus took most of the weight of the IB curriculum so if you look for the past 15 to 20 years at the pre-calculus here at Victor you know we were fitting in IB and then just within the last year or so we've started to say hey do we still need that because we don't offer the IB diploma we've had curriculum changes so when Common Core shifted some of the content that used to be in Algebra 2 kind of got left out of Algebra 2 but it was still kind of important for high school math so it kind
of got pushed into pre-calculus we had for and no disrespect to some of my colleagues but we had some teachers that had taught pre-calc for a little while and sometimes in a course that doesn't have a well-defined curriculum if somebody likes something that topic stays or oh we should always do this because it's always been in pre-calcan and what was happening is maybe some of the adjustments with technology and newer teaching techniques and more of a focus on conceptual that kind of got lost now within the past couple of years with some changes in Staffing and switches we have three relatively not necessarily new to the district but teachers new to the course over the last couple years teaching it but if we think about what happened over the last couple years that whole pandemic
thing they walked into the pre-calc at a time where it was a little disjoint they were kind of adjusting to hybrid learning and teaching and so um and without being a Regents based course there just wasn't a lot of time at that point allotted to the pre-calculus curriculum so we've kind of got to a point where we're like we need to look at our pre-calculus curriculum and then College Board comes out with this announcement in the summer so it seemed like a really nice time to fit those needs together so I just wanted folks to understand not that anybody's been doing things wrong or not great in pre-calc but it's been in need of a change and this seems like a really great opportunity and time to look at making those changes under the guidance
of a really well established set of standards that are coming from college board and so along with that besides being a nice set of Standards to kind of outline what a pre-calculus course could and should have is also aligned very nicely with AP Calculus because obviously college board has developed those standards as well and of course you know the standards are all being developed by a combination of people at College Board High School teachers and college professors so they carry a lot of weight and I think I have really been kind of looked at very carefully um as far as when we think about opportunities for our students potentially and and this is always going to depend upon what their course of study is where they're going to school the college's policy but now some
of our students that have been in that accelerated pathway they could potentially earn college credit for two math courses pre-calculus and calculus assuming the next year they go on and take the calculus and receive the score that they need again that's highly dependent upon major schools and those things but it's certainly an opportunity okay and I think kind of based on what I've said as far as the history we've also looked closely at what we have been teaching and pre-calc and most of what we've been teaching is what is outlined in college board standards I think big changes we would be actually taking out some of surprisingly I think sometimes people will think oap does that mean it's rigorous or harder should kids be nervous about that I actually think it's going to be a
better course more conceptual and applications so kind of the how we're teaching it some of the very tedious tedious algebra that's very old school we could maybe be pulling out of because it's not needed as much with technology and some of the other Concepts so not a big shift and what we're teaching although we would take some things out only a couple um standards from college board would be new to the course and they would fit in very nicely and I think also then just kind of an overall flow of the course with greater focus on applications and Concepts make it potentially a really great opportunity for our students so as far as our proposal and needs and what that looks like kind of from The District's end and what we would need support with
um you know just kind of an understanding of course where it fits into our Pathways for students and you know as far as what credits it could bear um our expenses really the primary expense is for some time for a group of teachers ideally the three pre-calculus teachers a calculus teacher there are two calculus teachers at the high school so one of us that does that and then an Algebra 2 or Algebra 2 honors teacher who would know where these students are coming from pre-calc does often kind of build well obviously build right on the algebra 2 so looking at an opportunity for that group to do some curriculum writing College Board does provide very high level professional development opportunities so the idea that ideally one of the three pre-calc teachers would attend a two
to three day summer Institute early in the summer um go get the learning get some resources materials bring back TurnKey share with the rest of the group and then kind of help as we went into the curriculum writing and as you can see um as far as our next steps carry is our K-12 math director is working on communication that we would share with students and parents because you know kind of that putting the AP label on might feel a little um you know daunting to people but we want them to understand we've looked really closely and really think the benefits outweigh anything with that and I think as far as the rigor it would still improve the teaching and the overall flow and then of course curriculum training would need to and training would
happen in the summer if we are approved for this thank you any questions for either me or Carrie um Don or Carrie um the chart at the beginning where it shows the three different tracks for students depending on if their grade level or Advanced um are there any exits or entrances into alternate programming so like for example if a student starts in at algebra geometry then Algebra 2 pre-calculus so that middle part of the chart are there exits or entrances that they could if they take algebra in eighth grade then potentially be eligible for geometry honors in ninth grade yes yeah so they're Pathways in and out there are there are yeah so that's kind of the nice piece about this new course that that doesn't change we've always offered that some are a little
more you know you know I'll take the top row actually sometimes you have a student who doesn't get accelerated in junior high math 8 goes pretty well they get to high school and they really kind of come into their own and Blossom so there are some opportunities we've had some students double up on Geometry in Algebra 2 and be able to then get into pre-calculus and then calculus as a senior we've had some students in that top row after 11th grade take a summer course of pre-calc and go into calculus so there's ways in and there are also Pathways that we have students sometimes who um maybe find that the honors path is too rigorous or just based on their schedule in their life they're saying you know I'm going to step back somewhere so
you know a student maybe after geometry honors might move into algebra 2. now that student is still on a pathway and an opportunity you know currently to take AP Calculus a b even if they move into that middle pathway you know with the new programming they'd actually have the opportunity for two AP courses or credits but yes we do have you know sometimes we have to get creative and kind of work with the student schedule and meet their needs and meet kids wherever they're at but there are opportunities just because I knew um from being on curriculum Council a couple years ago as a parent rep when we looked at the science path in the high school there were like ins and outs so I just wanted to make sure that was preserved for me
great thank you great question yeah yeah great question other questions I just in addition to the presentation and going through the course proposal form that you all had to to complete and fill out I appreciate the the focus and the depth you went to I mean all the explanations of what the student learning outcomes are going to be because of this and I know you didn't get to talk about all that but even but the document that we got to see yeah and I've done a great job of homework on this one right to be completely honest with you too A lot of those outcomes were you know part of what college board is bringing forward with their new program and providing those standards and here are what you you know you should be working
towards you know and so we were able to kind of build on those really easily so the really the quality and the the level and the amount of resources that come with offering the course at the AP level college board has done a really nice you know even pre-covered but even more so since covid they've stepped up their game of providing great resources for schools and teachers to make sure they're providing good courses this this is very well done okay anything else just one other question and I apologize if you covered this on one of the subsequent slides but how many sections of pre-calc and pre-calc honors would you be able to offer or does that based on enrollment it's based on enrollment but just to kind of tell you Trends recently so I can
tell you this year in that middle pathway we have three sections of pre-calculus so Juniors who are prepping to go into AP calc a b next year and there are three sections of pre-calculus honors um and then kind of where we are with Calculus there are two calc abs and two calc BCS being offered this year as far as students who have pursued all the way through got it thank you yeah yeah is that a general trend of three to two usually moving on to that fourth year yeah some years so that I'll tell you where the fluctuation usually occurs is with the calc B calc BC since we have offered it has held at two sections this year there's a total of 45 students between the two and that usually runs anywhere between 45
to maybe low 50. so two has been very consistent the calc a b is where you see fluctuation always two some years three depends on the group of students we do have some more students pursuing AP Statistics sometimes a little bit more after pre-calculus which is super relevant and makes sense for a lot of students thinking about future courses but so that's just where that fluctuation is and this is to to keep it clear and how I'm seeing it progress with that being pre-calculus AP pre-calculus honors being the prerequis reserve for AP Calculus BC let's see you have three sections of that all of the students demonstrate capability to offer three sections if they so choose to subscribe right if they do because I know initially it's no need for extra Staffing right are we
equipped with enough staff to continue to offer three sections without somebody having to I think again I think you would just maybe have a shift between like I said some years there's three in a b and always two in BC if there were three in BC most likely numbers wise when we think about our number of students have been accelerated it would it would go to two to a b um and probably you know with one extra section of something I think we have a little bit of wiggle room with maybe other courses you know right now this year we have four sections of AP stats if more students chose you know went the calculus route instead of that that might give and take a little bit there so um it should it's usually pretty
steady so that we as a district aren't and don't find ourselves in a position and actually it would probably really be more Dr turnover question where we wouldn't have to turn a student away from taking right continue of course yeah we can see too much of a change because again we are all sort of looking at putting these classes into where our current pathways are and they've been they've held pretty steady yeah students who um challenge the AP calc and the AP stats in the same year yes we have students who are enrolled in both yes yep other questions comments this is I think for a future meeting not this one In fairness to you when you told me when you said about 45 students and combined two sections of BC calc yeah that that's
a lot of students in BC for two sections it's just an opinion but it's not it's not a topic this year to teach those two sections and they're really they're doing great this year oh I don't doubt that I'm thinking of the teacher too I mean and and probably depending on who you talk to when they be like oh but I'm not sure what they'd say but I I'm really excited to say one thing I can share just from a teacher perspective my last my groups last year were great but they were students who their pre-calc gear was in the hybrid year so This Crew this year I'm already starting to see a little bit of recovery for um you know again I'm talking about some of our best learner or you know our strongest
math students but you know they had a more regular pre-calc last year and I see them coming in a little bit stronger and some more confidence and they've rebuilt some of those skills where there were some gaps so um yeah they're they're doing great and they're a great group of kids as you can imagine thank you of course uh you know we'll get back to you in July but we get the AP scores back that's right okay thank you very much for considering this I think it'll be a great opportunity for our kids in our school hi Kristen with school social studies Department to present to you the course proposal for history of sports which you guessed it is about the history of sports so this course is being proposed to really look at multiple
dimensions of social studies but with the sports lens to that so we can look at sociology we can look at history we can look at economics we can look at government but all with that lens of sports in mind also with diversity thinking about race gender class issues in the athletic Arena um so our rationale is that you know the diversity equity and inclusion focus of the course would align with our strategic plan so we can think about how have um Sports reinforced stereotypes how have they broken down barriers is one Avenue for the course we will of course align the course to the New York State social studies framework so we can look at those enduring issues we can look at the New York State social studies practices things like contextualization point of view
bias document analysis cause and effect so this course will still be aligned to the social studies framework but will hopefully relate to student interest as well you can see the the learning outcomes up there um obviously the curriculum's not written yet but the team has just sorted started to think about what the course could be should it get a get approved um so things like looking at the Miracle on Ice and looking at the Soviet conflict um things like looking at um the World Cup um let me make sure the Rugby World Cup how to get that right um the first cup after in 1995 after apartheid ended in South Africa so really just looking at you know the history of sports through that lens of diversity equity and inclusion as well as aligning it
again with those social studies practices this would be an elective so a half year elective offered to students in grades 10th 11th and 12th grade are estimated costs are around two thousand dollars and that is predominantly for curriculum writing we are not looking to adopt a textbook for this course um we also aren't necessarily looking to replace other courses but when we look at our electives we look at enrollment numbers and really just making sure that as a social studies Department we're offering a wide variety of courses that will interest lots of students and really keep them engaged in historical thinking with social studies our next steps pending board approval would be again communication to our students and our families and then we'll get started with curriculum writing any questions on this elective [Music] be
offered like twice a year like for each semester yeah I think it would depend on the enrollment numbers um so it could be something that we offer you know both in the fall and the spring but again it'd be dependent on student interest as all of our electives are there a district that's currently running this particular course that you could collaborate with and or is it yeah that's a great question we looked into um honestly what we looked more into college level courses so um the the teachers who are really interested in this course looked at Nazareth runs a um in a similar course MCC but that's a great point to maybe even look at local high schools in the area that might run a similar course thank you I didn't know if it came
organically or if it was I don't want to call it an adoptive practice but if you had seen it and then saw wow this could be a great application to our Dei and our strategic plan what a great opportunity so I was just curious where it came from yeah yeah I would say more organically yeah long term where they're potentially I know an opinion question for so what your opinion might be a long term would you think there could be a possibility once let's say you get board approval tonight this goes forward it's amazingly popular and well subscribed to get dual credit for our students that they might be able to apply to a college like Nazareth or you I know that's that's a ways down the road but if maybe that's something Mr CS
I'm sorry you might go into a microphone just so they can hear you on the uh thanks marketing class in the business department so there is so if there's a student who's looking to take a pathway this adds to another dimension in another discipline it becomes a very very well developed program before they even step into college so to answer the question about the dual enrollment the opportunities that we have right now are primarily through flcc we do have some through MCC so it would be contingent upon if they have anything similar and very often we we do find Opportunities where um where students have those chances so to answer your question I don't know off the top of my head what the correlation would be right now with the community colleges but because we
already have those established Partnerships a strong one with up also see with flcc and a growing one with MCC I would imagine to answer your question Dr Parks that we would most likely have that opportunity I can't say definitively right now because we we don't know what what their similarities is in their offerings but we are always looking to grow that opportunity for for the community college credit opportunities for our students thank you other comments okay so we have an opportunity to approve these courses so I need a motion for approval motion Dr Parks and second by Lisa any other comments or questions before voting these are both incredibly exciting offerings to our students it's it's great to see especially the focus on AP Calculus I've worked in higher education for a long time it
is an area that professors are constantly saying that we are lacking and seeing when students are coming in as freshmen so that is going to just change the game for our students moving into college and and to have a course where we're combining things that students love today with something they don't love as much to learn about gives them an opportunity to see how important our history is so this is just really exciting great job guys great other comments all in favor say aye aye aye any opposed abstentions motion carried thank you folks congratulations okay now we have item 7c management Plan update Elementary update at this point some of the same players with some new friends but some additional friends yes [Music] um our elementary leadership team with the building principles uh Rob DeRose
from ECS Heidi Robb from the primary school Ashley sicola from the Intermediate School along with the two directors of instruction Kristen Williamson and Kara Goodell and it's our pleasure tonight to update you on the work so far happening at the k6 or pre-k6 level in alignment to the management plan we started this work as the management plan just was solidified in the summer at our Leadership Retreat and the team really came together to look at what are those pillars Incorporated within the management plan and how can we work together to craft goals so that we don't have well across the district five buildings operating in a silo but really have some areas of focus together that we can collaborate on be because we know we're much much stronger when we're working together so that leadership
treat Retreat really kicked off the work tonight you're going to hear really the focus on goals one and two that the three buildings have in common goal three you heard a bit about back in December and in November around student supports and opportunities and I know there's more to come certainly in those areas as well but goal one the three buildings have a focus of creating that welcoming safe and inclusive community where all members are valued and the wellness of each individual is at the Forefront and then goal two developing comprehensive systems and practices for Learning and instruction that positively impact all students academic social emotional and behavioral success so at the bottom of the screen there is just a bit of a snapshot of what the goal templates look like each building has under
those two goals action steps that they worked first as a team together to sort of craft out and see how they fit with one another where are those points of intersection where are those places where this might just be a focus at ECS they talked through what it's going to look like when we achieve that goal what are those tangible pieces of evidence we could collect what resources might we need and be thinking forward around what our staff might need in order to make these goals a reality and then what's an appropriate timeline for this work so each building has a goal document that has that same structure in that same format and had plenty of opportunities to collaborate not only amongst themselves but with their building leadership teams and with their faculties to enlist
them in really stepping out what those action steps are what those pieces of evidence would be and coming back to it with their faculties through the year so we're very excited tonight to share this work with you and I'm going to turn it over to Rob who's going to overview a bit about goal one thank you as Karen mentioned I'm going to share with you an overview of what Ashley and Heidi and I are going to talk about regarding goal number one to create a welcoming safe and inclusive community where all members are valued and the wellness of every individual is at the Forefront so what we'd like to highlight are three areas of many that are focused on goal number one and what we decided when we got together is the six of us
got together we decided we really wanted to highlight and celebrate the consistency that exists between the three buildings so we have three areas that are consistent from each building we'll zoom in on each one and then we'll take a little bit of a journey specific to each building as we go through so we'll be discussing a professional learning structure through vertical teams the common expectations that exist for our students and our tier one activities that are helping our buildings our students our families and our colleagues grow toward goal number one to start with vertical teams it's a structure for professional learning and at the Early Childhood school the primary school and the intermediate school every monthly faculty professional learning meeting uses this vertical teaming structure which consists of teams of teachers from different areas of
expertise these vertical teams of teachers are the same for every monthly meeting and they're designed to Foster and maintain positive relationships within and across the school to share strategies ideas and resources to help all students so every monthly faculty meeting if you were to walk into the ECS faculty meeting the Primary School faculty meeting or the Intermediate School faculty meeting you would see groups of teachers seated together in a thoughtfully designed manner allowing teachers to collaborate connect and talk with their colleagues that they may not see on a day-to-day basis from a variety of expertise and backgrounds these teaming structures have led to joy laughter and deep connections and having many year years of faculty meetings to describe a faculty meeting as joyful and filled with deep connections and laughter I am sincerely saying that
if you were going to walk into one of our meetings it would be a very positive atmosphere filled with a lot of deep connections and a lot of smiling faces we've led to meaningful conversations that have each faculty member closer to our building and District goal so as we zoom into the ECS what we want to share with you is some learning that our building at the ECS has has participated in focused on adding cool down spaces sometimes referred to as peace Corners to every learning space So at the ECS we had a faculty meeting designed on adding or enhancing a cool down space in every learning space and it was an incredible response we had faculty leading the learning in the front of the room we had vertical teams reading articles together discussing and
identifying their own personal next steps faculty with an existing cooldown space considered and discussed ways to enhance that area and those that didn't yet have that in their classrooms discussed their first steps and the response like I mentioned has been so impressive and I truly believe that it's through that vertical teaming structure that allowed our staff to have vulnerable honest and open conversations about what obstacles they saw what dissonance did it create as we did this learning and why is this an important addition to our learning spaces to help our children have access to spaces that they may need as they process and work through big feelings we discussed what we do as adults when we go through big feelings and consider what can our children do within our classrooms I have a few quotes
about the impact of vertical teams from faculty in our school as a new person to the building meeting with my vertical team has allowed me to create connections faster with other team members that I may not see on a day-to-day basis I appreciate the opportunity to learn across other grade levels and content areas working with my vertical team allows us to share strategies ideas and resources that may not otherwise receive we my vertical team laughs a lot and supports one another when we are challenged with student when we are challenged with a variety of situations connecting with my team allows for more intimate relationships that can be harder to Foster in our larger community and lastly meeting with our vertical team has provided me with an opportunity to connect with my colleagues who may not
interact with regularly it allows us to share differing perspectives experiences successes and challenges in a non-threatening way I've enjoyed getting to know my vertical teammates better both professionally and personally this year and we've went around and took a few pictures of some of those cool down spaces within our classrooms and you can see what a nice comfortable and calming area it may be for students if they need to process through big feelings next I'll pass it along to talk about some common expectations with Mrs Robb ie for clarity when you're speaking is it a faculty meeting of professionals from all three buildings in the same space having it or is it within the building within the building yeah so just the faculty from the ECS so when our building leadership team met shortly upon my
arrival here at the ECS one thing that our school is really striving for and longing for was consistency between the three buildings but also to what I was hearing was shrink the size of our school they wanted to get to know one another in a deep and professional manner but both professionally and personally so we decided to have consistent groups that were beyond the colleagues nearby those are who are going to gravitate to we're going to see them every day because of the proximity and just the organization of our building but if we design an intentional professional learning structure such as a vertical team we're going to expand that that that zone of uh you know close relationship within our faculty so it's just within our school thank you another way that we're working toward
that goal of having a welcoming safe and inclusive community is to share common expectations within a building so you'll see the the three common expectations between the three buildings but I want to First just start by sharing what is the purpose of having common expectations and really it's so that students have a clear understanding of expected behaviors and also so we can use consistent language with our students ECS did already have some common expectations and Vis had what they called a motto which is you know their expectations and Victor Primary School didn't have those expectations clearly spelled out and that was one of the things that the staff was really hoping to do is to look at what the expectations were and so this not only in the end created some consistency within Victor primary
school but really amongst all three schools because you can see the similarities so to zoom in a little bit with the primary school and what this looked like last spring I think I shared with all of you that we did have a committee for common expectations and one of the first things they wanted to do was look at well what does the ECS do and what does Vis do and so it really aligned nicely between those two buildings so we kind of knew we were that middle middle one and we wanted to align nicely with that however when you think about that goal of having a welcoming and inclusive community we wanted the students to be a part of that so this fall what we did is we looked at okay if we care for
ourselves we care for others and we care for our school what would that look like and sound like in all over these locations you know in the cafeteria in our hallways in our classrooms and so that's the hard work that the students did they brainstormed what that would look like and sound like and this is some of their examples we hung them all out in the hallway for for students to look at one another and they could do kind of a gallery walk around the school and then one weekend my children and I came in we took down all these posters and then we found some well I did that part they'd helped me take them down and then I found some of those similarities here's some more examples and then we are able to
create this Matrix and certainly is every little thing that the student said there no but it uses a lot of their language um and there were as you can imagine a lot of similarities we tried to phrase them in a positive way so it wasn't don't do this don't do this as best we could and and so here is the Matrix we have and when you think about the similarity between the three buildings this is also work that the intermediate school did this year was defining that for students and so this helps us work toward that goal because now not only just within the primary schools they're that consistency but we know there's transitions in their Elementary years and so they're hearing that consistent language all the way from kindergarten all the way up in
all the different classrooms so it's a really great way to work toward that first goal foreign not to be cheeky but I mean there are a lot of parents that if you were to put it up at home you could you know couple that and now your your students are seeing the same language all the time yeah a lot of our Focus has been um you know bringing together that k6 especially considering upk6 especially considering the Transitions and what we can do to help facilitate that um and thinking about our staff members too with some of the consistent practices but really keeping students at the Forefront you know what does it feel like to go from one building to the next and consistent language consistent expectations um has been has been a major um a
source of what we have been trying to to work through as a k-6 team so um as previously shared we're working to create that welcoming safe and inclusive environment in all three buildings and one Focus area um this year is implementing tier one strategies so right in the classroom for all students to access what are some strategies that we can offer to our to our students and we know that student connection is really at the heart of social emotional learning so our students and our teachers and staff members have been you know working through different ways and providing teachers and staff members providing ways to connect at early stages it may look like check-ins at the door ways to be greeted and providing some choices with that and ways to say hello whether it's a
high five or a hug but that warm greeting at the door as the students get older it may look like the clip system that you see in the on the left here where students are able to designate each morning how they're feeling so how are they entering the classroom What feelings do they have you'll see that a couple students in this particular day were feeling angry or feeling sad in talking with the teacher who facilitated this in the classroom she's following up always in the morning with students who fall into that those two categories you'll see that and it's a little bit hard to see um from your from your seat but each clip has a number to it so it's um it's a way to also ensure that that check-in is private always maintaining
the Dignity of the student and then having that private one-on-one conversation after as one again one way to do that check-in you may also see as the students are getting older that check-ins done electronically perhaps a student doing a Google form or sharing it privately with a teacher or even email some of the teachers are trying to teach students how to write a proper email and while doing that it's also a check-in on how they're feeling for the day so different ways to again to provide that that check-in first thing in the morning and how students are feeling what they're bringing into the school day and how how we can help support them with this process students are also utilizing self-advocacy skills as well as promoting really self-awareness and through again that connection when I
was thinking about talking today I thought about um just how important again the connection is and what teachers are doing and staff members are doing every single day knowing that it's critical for our students to feel connected in our schools and I thought about the first day of school this year uh there's actually two pictures that I saw on Twitter Dr Terra Nova posted um two pictures from the ECS and it was a student who was walking in one of our youngest Learners um I'm assuming walking into a classroom and he's walking down the hallway and he's with one student one adult hand in hand and then the other one is showing where to go and then the other picture depicts the same student walking into the classroom and one of the staff members who
is actually a mentor teacher who helps support um you know all staff and was probably here this is an exercise of hands the first day of school she was at the door crouched down eye to eye with this student welcoming him to the classroom as well as the classroom teacher again I'm assuming holding the door with that warm hello very first day and um Dr terranova's captioned that day read the first days can be nerve-wracking for our youngest students no better place to diminish anxiety and build trust than our ECS with our amazing staff I think that's evident um you know throughout our campus and whether you enter a kindergarten classroom or a fifth grade classroom you'll find teachers masterfully creating a safe and welcoming warm safe again environment through those connections in addition to
connections we also know as Heidi shared those school-wide expectations are crucial for our kids they have to know what to expect we also know that within their safe space within their classroom Community um they working together to create those those co-created rules Norms um but together that co-create is the um emphasis and what it what it means what does it mean to feel safe in our class what does that look like what does it sound like what can we agree to in our classroom we know that's important so our teachers again k6 have been focusing on um yes the expectations but also what are we going to accept within our classroom Community to ensure that that safe feel um and then our teachers are also and our staff members are also um celebrating when our
students are making those great choices um we we have those rules and expectations and Norms in our classrooms and our kids are excelling and they're doing a great job and they're making Positive Choices so whether it's a student of the month celebration a positive phone call home catching students doing the right thing and celebrating those choices is an emphasis as well thank you turn it over to Carrie Goodell hello again everybody um so I'm happy to partner um with Kristen um tonight just to talk to you about some of um the work that's been occurring around goal two of our strategic and management plan really focusing on learning and instruction so we would just want to highlight for you some of the examples that um of some of the quality work that our amazing teachers
and teacher leaders have been engaging in so looking at tier ones folking focusing on that core instruction that all of our students receive and really we're trying to to make sure that we can ensure that all of our students have access to that guaranteed and viable curriculum which is really a message we continue to reinforce with our teachers um and so the work that we've done really kind of strengthens that instruction that every student's going to get so for curriculum development and instructional supports at the humanities um for the Humanities side of things our fourth grade a fourth grade team of teachers worked really hard this summer to create an exciting and dynamic Humanities unit so kind of breaking down those walls between Ela and social studies so it's not hey we're doing Ela during
this time and social studies here but blending that and finding a way to kind of marry those content areas in a way that was really meaningful and relevant for the students so that group of teachers created a powerful unit on indigenous people they implemented the unit this fall um had a lot of conversations and collaborations during the unit just to kind of bounce ideas off of each other that unit is complete now and they're working on kind of collecting feedback analyzing student work which then they're going to use all those pieces to kind of engage in that reflective phase so that's what gives our curriculum that viable aspect making sure that it doesn't just stay stagnant and how can we make changes to improve that learning experience for students so an exciting opportunity for our
students at the Intermediate School in science we've had a lot of curriculum writing and instructional development happening our teachers K5 have been engaged in using the BOCES science kits for the past few years and I think it's finally they've gotten so familiar with them that all of a sudden something's kind of clicked with some of them saying hey we can do that we can plan this instruction we see what this looks like when you take those three elements of science instruction between the content the science and engineering practices and you combine those with those cross-cutting Concepts and and behaviors in science and we can develop instruction that's very um Victor focused so what it allows you know those kits are made in general for every school district to utilize no matter what their schedule is
how much science they have how many days a week they get to do it and so the disadvantage for a district is that it might be difficult to implement that within their structure so our Victor teams have been excited to kind of specify that for for our structures so at the kindergarten level we had a group engage in a unit about weather which was exciting that it was this fall one of the teachers when we were engaging in the writing was saying we can do this we've done the BOCES kit on weather for years we're ready to victorize this I didn't want to burst or bubble letting her know that wasn't a very scientific term but she was they were just excited to put their own stamp on something and the teachers and students responded
really positively we have teacher leaders and teachers at the primary school engaging in the development of lesson guides basically to take those big kits and put them into digestible chunks for teachers so that they can make sure that the prioritized learning for each kit is being implemented for our students and we have a team of fifth grade teachers currently working right now on a spring unit around space exploration and they are very excited they're using a technology resource and trying to find a way to kind of mirror some of the learning that the kit did and how they can do it in a fashion that works for their kind of instruction so it's energizing to see these teachers who saw you know an example I guess of how you can design science instruction aligned with
Next Generation and kind of when I want to put their own stamp on it and of course for our newer teachers we have our instructional coaches working with those new teachers around Math Science and Ela Humanities just to kind of figure out how we can support them access resources and see answer any questions that they might have in regards to any uh in regards to the resource Pilots that hit a tier one instruction obviously you're aware we have our um our literacy pilot happening and Kristen will speak more to that in a bit I don't want to steal her Thunder and pretend I can speak to it at all if she can so but we also have a lot of work happening at our Intermediate School around with some spelling and word study resources just
to increase the awareness around some more morphemic awareness just kind of developing that word study aspect for students our sixth grade team of Math teachers is engaged in a sixth grade pilot with connected math it's exciting connected math is a very interesting program where it really um teaches math concepts and practice through exploration and real life application and it's exciting way for students to kind of learn how to discover how to do the math rather than just being shown how to do the math it's an exciting idea and the feedback that our teachers are giving back to the connected math program will help to shape and develop that program so that it's a quality resource for Victor and for other districts across the country exciting work so after we spent some time kind of looking
at the tier one instruction then we have to look at those tier two um students who might be in need of some more intensive supports around tier two who might not be able to fully access or grasp that tier one instruction it might need some supplemental support just to fill in any of those gaps that they might have so we've been working to formalize some consistent k6 practices around those intervention supports for our students and we do this for a few reasons one we want to ensure that we're making some data-driven decisions about our students and making sure those decisions are justifiable with evidence um we want to know that all of our students have access to the support dependent on their needs and then we want to do anything we can to create some
consistent practices from building to building so that a family teachers don't feel like they have to kind of relearn a different process and system at each building it kind of minimizes the impact of some of those transitions so we can create that consistent experience for our families so this year each building has developed a team and that team is comprised of Administrators and our AIS providers and they join together to engage three times a year in what we call data days and so on those data days those teams will come together and they'll review student performance data so we spend a lot of time giving benchmark assessments to our students and if we're going to give those assessments we want to make sure we're using that data so it's not just lost time so we
use those benchmark assessments we combine them with teacher observations teacher feedback different pieces that they can pull in terms of unit assessments taste state test scores we compile all that data together and we analyze it using our criteria per grade level for where we feel like students should be functioning and Performing if a student falls below one of those criteria areas we look at that student and try and look at them holistically to say is this just a one isolated snapshot of how they're doing or is there a broader level of concern where we might need to enroll 11 intervention to give them some support so those teams work really hard on those data days to categorize our students based on do they need to start AIS services do they need to continue in them
have they performed at a level where now we can exit them from those services or we do need to monitor them to see they're right on that cusp and we want to monitor them for a few more weeks or collect some additional data to see if they'll eventually need that support so we we identify students in those different groups so that we can make sure we're continuously monitoring them and how they're doing once those decisions are made about what supports a student might need we have similar and consistent structures for communication now we generate the a letter for the parent and guardian letting them know the status of the student and what service they might need to access and the letter explains that decision explains how the decision was made and then indicates who they
can reach out to with any questions or concerns we had our first round of data days in the fall they went really well we learned a lot we reflected as a team between leadership and providers made some changes to the process and now we're just getting ready to gear up for our next round of winter data days in February and so we're excited to look forward to the way to collaborate to come together so we feel like we're making those decisions as a team and it doesn't ever put just one person on the spot and it's based on a spectrum of data so Kristin's going to take a few moments just to talk to you about the pilot specifically hello again before I dump and jump into the pilot I actually get to talk about
my favorite topic which is literacy um so in Victor we are engaging in a really comprehensive um training program for our teachers so when we think about that goal too learning and instruction we want to make sure that our teachers are well equipped to teach our children how to read write and spell and so when we think about if you've heard the educational Buzz science of reading that really is just a term that means the body of research that tells us exactly how children learn to read spell and write and so our goal with bringing this research to the hands of our teachers is so that we are all consistent in accessing the same body of research and also building a common language in Victor so if I say phonics phonological awareness phonemic awareness or
phonetics we're all clear on that so we're working towards that goal last year we had over 40 teacher leaders come together to receive this training through a series of modules offered throughout the year we are using a resource called letters it stands for language Essentials for teachers of reading and spelling it is just a professional development resource so it's it's not like the pilot that I'll I'll speak to in a little bit but again it just takes that body of research eye movement research brain research and puts it in the hands of people who should really have it which is our teachers that teacher leader group that came together last year to study those modules they gave some amazing feedback on what they felt their colleagues which modules they felt their colleagues needed based on
their role or their grade level so we took that feedback and thank you to them and developed a plan moving forward so this year you can see what the modules are and you can see the yellow is the focus for this year and hopefully it looks really impressive because we're getting a lot of the modules that we guarantee to our teachers done this year thanks to the support of our a building administrators in our HR department because these do happen as part of release days the modules in blue are the modules that will be the focus of the 2023-2024 school year and again this came directly from teacher feedback and we thank them for their thoughtfulness and thinking about what their colleagues would need to be most successful in teaching reading spelling and writing in
addition to the training that I offer via that those modules we have teachers attending lots of other trainings I am most just blown away by our teachers here in Victor they are eager to learn they are inquisitive they are just hungry and so we have um this little uh sort of a lesson template on the on my left here that came out of a training that our academic intervention specialist went to in which they really out of the reading League which is a non-profit in Syracuse great organization right near us but they went to a training to really think about what should their intervention services look like and you know when we pop into those rooms k-6 they're really consistent attending to the individual needs of students but aligning their practices with research several of
our teachers and teacher leaders and administrators went to see Natalie Wexler we also had teachers go see Dr um Willingham and both of those Minds really highlight the importance of background knowledge and vocabulary Larry to children's reading comprehension and we also have our instructional coach Lauren Les she's done an amazing job offering additional PD to help teachers Implement practices that align with the research that they're learning about all in all we're really putting so much effort into training our teachers because we know that programs don't teach the teachers do so we want to make sure that they're well equipped no matter what resource we put in their hands they can use it well and they can they can modify it when when they know what their kids need and yet at the same time I'm
going to toe dip into the pilot but I will be back in March for a full presentation so even though we know teachers teach not necessarily about the program we do know that our teachers need the appropriate resources and so we've spent a lot of time on that professional training um and you know out of that using the body of research we've chosen two K2 Ela resources to Pilot we have 17 classrooms piloting um between K2 we have CT 1211 enl classrooms represented General Ed classrooms represented and just kudos to these teachers it was voluntary we didn't we didn't force anyone but they really are putting their all into this they're going to additional trainings this week we completed our first round of formal feedback so they're just really spending a lot of time vetting
these resources the two resources were chosen we did look at the Florida to Center for reading research rubric making sure that they align to current research so they're both quality resources and they're really doing the hard work of trying them out and letting us know their feedback so just a huge thanks to them we like I said I hope to be back in March with a recommendation for a research resource to implement next year but again really making sure that not only are our teachers well trained in literacy instruction they have the appropriate resource to use to enhance that student learning and any questions for any of us I have a question about what you just said Kristen what are the two resources that you're currently looking at yeah we are piloting um super kids
and we are piloting open court again both in a K2 setting um both of those resources the teacher request was not just phonics but to have comprehension vocabulary listening writing and hand just a small request in handwriting um so we really only looked at resources that were really comprehensive and not just sort of that word study spelling phonics lens thank you other questions well these updates are informative meaningful and appreciated so thank you all for bringing those to us yeah that's great all right 7D would be the budget status update transportation and it looks like we have who's the binders book of binders as uh Mr police passes out the budget binders just uh um overview we are going to use the next six board meetings two in January two in February two in March
to present the board the uh proposed 23-24 budget that ultimately the board would vote on uh and approve and finalize in April so just a big thank you to Derek Felice and his department and all the work that they're doing with our leadership staff to uh to really build this budget and try to keep the main objectives in place that he's going to talk about in a second so thank you Derek thank you Dr tanova uh two things first of all uh I apologize that the binders are thick binders we are repurposing the binders that were used for the Strategic plan so they're a little bit larger than necessary but it was an effort to uh save money and second of all I would like to thank Sherry Laskey for making this presentation look much
better than what I created so um thank you so uh today we're going to talk about we're we're going to start the 23 24 budget development specifically tonight we will be talking about transportation uh so our agenda is to refresh ourselves on the goals of the budget talk about the trans the transportation budget in addition to our transportation budget we always have uh propositions to purchase new vehicles so we'll talk about uh what propositions we are exploring and then the budget calendar review what to expect in the upcoming meetings like Dr Taryn oversted so the goals of the budget are to maintain a comprehensive education that the VCS district and our community have come to expect improve alignment of resources towards the district's strategic plan maintain stabilization of Reserves maximize the use of every dollar
that we spend maximizes the ability to generate aid for future years and of course transparency so to begin this is the Personnel budget this represents just a rollover budget there are several efforts that the district has made to try to attract and retain bus drivers we have implemented we have worked with the Union to allow bus drivers in other districts who may not be happy that we're not trying to steal bus drivers from other districts but other districts that are looking to join our team in the previous or in the current CSEA contract before the Moa they would have to start all over with no experience so we had an MOA that would allow anybody with prior experience to to not start at the same rate of pay as somebody who just got their license
yesterday we have also brought in and it started using part-time employees these are employees who may not be able to commit the five days a week to us but can guarantee us two three days a week to try to curb the the bus driver shortage and then uh and again in full try transparency when I did the budget last year I had dialed back the salary cost because the historical information I was using during covid wasn't there so I had learned that I had taken away some routes that were not being utilized such as activity periods so we had to layer them back in because they're necessary so the increase in change seems a little high but part of it was because we dialed back our salaries last year and we had to bring them
back in we've also experienced that some routes based off student needs we've combined runs in the past and we still are doing it a little bit but some students might have been on the bus too long or they weren't compatible with kids in two different placements that were on the same run so splitting up runs and just a variety of needs of students so this represents pragmatic changes Mrs D'Angelo had a meeting with Mrs clink earlier this week about an additional ad that was possible from uh I for the transportation department but that's not included in this that will be included in her March Personnel update to you guys so this is strictly representing what is needed to run the district as of today with no other changes equipment and contractual so we have a
budget line for sixty five hundred dollars for equipment this is typically used to purchase uh more expensive equipment such as a brake lathe which ultimately will save us money so as a as in lieu of buying all new brake pads they buy like a brake lathe I'm not a mechanic so I'm not going to pretend to know what that means so it but it's more geared towards buying the more expensive tools needed to repair buses in additional we have contractual costs which are repairs sometimes there is body work that needs to be done to to buses and other and um such as their software Conference travel the the office of the transportation office goes to Saratoga and there's a big nyapt which is a New York State Association of people Transportation I believe is students
stands for to get caught up to date on changes coming down the pipeline and Law changes uniforms such as the mechanics because of what they're working with we we contract out with Cintas to clean their uniforms to make sure the oil is all off it has floor mats so when bus drivers are coming in and out they're not tracking salt and destroying the the facilities auto insurance electricity this fuel and gas represents heating fuel and gas uh phone water so these are the utilities minor increases when we're looking at our year-to-date expenditures specifically really right around now represents about half a Year's usage so if we look at what we spent to as of right now it kind of doesn't warrant too much of an increase in any of these areas outside auto insurance uh
the costs of things are going up so if there's an accident there's a replenish cost that goes up with it so I know personally my homeowner's insurance has seen the spike because of increases there and then utilities are going up Plies and BOCES so supplies include office supplies such as uh paper sheets that are filled out for like route sheets uh gasoline and diesel oil and parts and tires as you guys are very well aware we've seen a spike in diesel so the largest part of that increases to keep up with Rising diesel cost costs and then BOCES we have one student I believe that had moved into the district they had a Monroe one placement typically districts have um just a tuition cost Monroe won Boces in an effort to help districts actually carved
out the transportation piece from the tuition because some districts receive higher Transportation Aid than they get on BOCES Aid so it's a separate line item on the BOCES bill just in an effort to increase Aid so the only line we currently have one student I believe there and that Bose design simply represents a component of the tuition that is separated out from the tuition purely for Aid purposes so just a year-to-date comparison um the the spike in salaries is mostly due to attracting retained drivers our equipment stayed flat contractual is primarily auto insurance and slight uptick and utilities supplies again goes to diesel and BOCES there's no change when you in your book in front of you I I we have if you look at the drivers you may recognize some of those names in
there in different areas so you'll see some office staff and some of the mechanics listed in the driver page and I just want you to know that right now on most days the transportation office and the and the bus garage actually is pulling all of their driver all the mechanics all the office workers except for one mechanic and one office worker to drive routes right now so those people are actually acting as a placeholder so hopefully the goal is not to keep continuing paying mechanics in the the office workers to drive bus but they represent a route that hopefully we can replace in the future with a bus driver so it is not an error that you may see a bus driver or Kelly Klink listed in there twice they are actually driving the bus
right now so any questions on Where the budget is go ahead um on the page that lists the drivers I think it's page three without naming specific names there are some that show like a negative change yeah so what some of that could have been was in that line before was a driver who might have left and then I just replaced that name with a new driver that may be making more than the other got it it was previously there okay that makes total I just was curious yeah any other questions in regards to the budget so this year we're looking at two propositions the first one is the our standard proposition to purch to refresh school buses um we're looking at five to six large buses and two to three small buses because this
is actually a couple years out the mechanics are still assessing the needs looking at what the mileage of those buses may be um so we're hoping to get that number determined um and the next proposition is a proposition I'm not sure if it was tied into the annual proposition in the past but we haven't purchased these vehicles in 20 plus years and these represent uh we have a service truck that is no longer operable so when a bus breaks down on the side of the road it has all the Mechanics Tools the mechanic two mechanics usually one comes with a bus one comes with a service truck they give the bus driver get the kids onto the new bus so they can continue on the way if the mechanic can troubleshoot the bus on the
side of the road great and then the mechanic the other mechanical drive it back if not it does have the towing capabilities to bring it back that that with a 19 late 1980s model service truck so it is it's been a while uh in addition there are three vans that are in need to be replaced they most likely will not pass the next D.O.T inspection in June and is not saying that there's anything wrong with those Vehicles when you are transporting students they have a higher expectation of these buses I personally sometimes drive this bus because we're short on drivers because I don't have a CDL and I can tell you that the one that I drive the handle that to close the door is being held together by electrical tape right now so again
it's been these are 90s models uh Tahoes that are they're just at the end of their use for life and because of the timeline of the need of it we can't do that in the 24 25 and meet the needs of our students so a second proposition to refresh those uh Vans would be required just to maintain our operations obviously the Vans are more of a small cost than a bus would be are these available we are currently working with them trying to let them know that we're interested in them um Kelly believes that she we can get them yes we actually are eyeing a service truck we're just hoping nobody buys it between now and then yeah good luck yes any other questions on potential propositions Woody's truck in the old buses are they
scrapped or like what do you do with them so it we have a variety of options for that um but so for example on your agenda today you approve to declare Surplus buses we could put them list them on Auctions International and sell them on the open market via an auction and surprisingly those yield much higher results than I have I would even expect if you ever in your home if you're on Auctions International you'll be shocked at how much that you can get for them so that's an option you can scrap them as well but either one so we got to determine what will get us the most money I also want to say uh the 24-25 buses are still diesel buses and it's purely because we do not have the infrastructure in place
right now as we develop the capital project and start getting we have to put a generator over by the Tran or a Transformer over by the transportation building because you're going to get a large amount of electricity and it has to break it down we have to run conduit under the parking lot and install charging stations and we're just not in a spot to start purchasing the electric buses so these buses on the proposition will be diesel at this time until we get past that Capital project and have the infrastructure in place for them budget calendar review so uh two weeks from today we will discuss operation maintenance this will also have Security in there it's just the coding thing on the state comptrollers on Thursday or on Thursday February 9th we'll start looking at
revenues including the tax cap calculation on the 16th we'll start on non-personnel budget in the buildings we've already started discussions with the principals they have a plan on how they plan on tackling their budget for this year now so we're making good progress already on that on March 1st I have to file a preliminary tax cap that the State Comptroller wants to get an idea a sense of what all the districts are doing it's a preliminary filing on Thursday March 9th Mrs D'Angelo will provide you with a Personnel update on Thursday March 23rd hopefully we have our final uh budget based on known state aid numbers we have a projection that came out in December February 1st is around when we start getting the official state aid runs the the number that I'm working off
of is an estimate by the Association of school business official that has been confirmed by the the association the superintendent group um I also believe that they those numbers are fairly accurate earlier this week Kathy hokel has announced that there was a three percent hold harmless for some of the districts in the state aid run that I have there are some districts getting zero so it's to be seen if that three percent comes from the other districts or if the state's going to Pony up the other three percent so we're still trying to figure out where that three percent is going to come from uh on Thursday April 13th we will be looking to finally formally adopt the budget on Friday April 14th is your final day to submit petitions for anybody who's interested in
running for the Board of Education on Monday April 17th in the business office we will be drawing uh names to decide the order in which the names will appear on the ballot on April 24th we have to file a property tax report card May 2nd we will have the budget hearing in the junior high Auditorium followed by the meet the candidate sponsored by PTSA in pi uh in district office on Tuesday May 9th we will hold voter registration because we do have uh voter registration not poll registration and then finally on Tuesday May 16th we will have our budget vote any questions for Derek thanks for the binder yeah they already just because it came up on in that Transportation section I noticed that the last like five or six listed seemed like I thought
those were raises it's the yeah the um print is really tough to read in the white so those are awesome right salaries yeah those are full salaries of new positions yes they're new some of those are positions that we're bringing on because of the changes in our and with just working with the Union there's nothing in the in the last year's column that's why it's the white the the any of the content just isn't a point of reference under 22 23 23 24 all of the the salaries are in white or against the gray yep that's perfect yeah we're trying not to show you the numbers but but there's evidence that the number that it pulls at the bottom is substantiated by a number I get it but I mean but I mean in terms
of is that of our interest to see it at all if we look carefully yes I mean at the end of the day all of our salaries are foilable if you want to file a Freedom of Information Act and plus there is a website see through New York just for people's comfortability I tried to redact that but there's evidence that that subtotal isn't just an arbitrary number is comprised of actually figuring out the salary of any every individual employee for next year yeah thank you okay thank you all right we are at 7e to um approve the following field trips Victor robotics to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania April 5th through April 8th to attend the first Greater Pittsburgh Regional and then Senior High School Art Club to New York New York April 21st through the 23rd I
need a motion to approve these please motion by Elizabeth second by Trisha yep thank you any comments or questions about these in New York yeah I'll be there probably yeah perhaps yeah okay good luck to our teams that's all I don't think I can reach the pedals on the bus okay all in favor say aye aye aye any opposed extensions motion carried thank you okay item 7f policy review it's the second and final reading of the policy relationship with booster organizations policy one two two two a motion please Debbie Debbie second Lisa any comments or questions we've had this before us a couple times seeing none all in favor say aye aye aye and the opposed abstentions motion carried thank you okay number eight is the meeting reports Monroe County School boards Association committee reports
who would like to begin if I can do the information exchange Okay so yesterday a few of us in in joint with Dr terranova went to the Monroe County School of Association information exchange it was specific to the interactions and tabletop exercises is what were conducted with legislators in preparation for legislative breakfast that's going to be held upcoming in February and it was very it was quite enriching from the standpoint of we had mock legislators with some pretty interesting names we had Senator I hejelot was the character that was at our table the but what it did it was a tabletop interactive exercise for board members and superintendents who were there to get a taste of what it's like trying to speak to our talking points for our district specifically but also jointly with the
Monroe County School Board Association and you know one of the one of the tables actually there was a lot the very real experience of the person who was there for that legislator was actually well the the senator couldn't be here so the senator sent me and I'm the aid where they would just take notes and again putting the board members and superintendents in the experiences that the potentially are gonna see an experience in in February so it was it was fantastic and then they also put together it's on the Monroe County School Board Association website not just the the points that we will be speaking about and trying to to advocate for our our district but also General lines of etiquette so that you can make some Headway have a meaningful conversation where they're you
know the legislators are just going to tune you out because you're coming across as a buffoon who doesn't know how to put a put a point of emphasis on something so it was good it was very well very well done oh okay and uh our superintendent behaved himself but I can't say that for all the superintendents that were there at our table I'll talk about the legislative committee meeting which was the day before um I attended that and there's a couple of things that everyone here should really take a look at on the Monroe County School Board Association website there is the position paper for Monroe County School Board Association and the talking points that Dr Parks referred to those would be meaningful to review if you're planning on attending the legislative breakfast which date
I don't remember February 4th thank you um and uh and if you are planning on going on the Albany trip as well so those are two important documents to make sure you review and it's going to be our charge especially for the legislative breakfast to put together our talking points for Victor so that we can provide the legislators that we visit with our folder that incorporates some important things for our district and perhaps some examples some stories to to support those uh those needs so I'm going to contact Tim and we'll work together to try and put that together I've asked Maureen to look for some older documents that we could probably pull from so those are things we need to do okay would we get together prior to attending the the event on Saturday
the 4th to talk about that like those of us who are going or would that just be sent through email I I would send it through email I would think if we can find something to get the other that would be preferable but if not potentially I know we're after the after the budget oh sure review on the 26th I know then we're going over our self-evaluation but depending on the end time and who's registered and is going to be attending on the fourth that group that'd be great it's good potentially that time just stay there sure just good idea in mind it would and it would be an open meeting so we'd have to make sure that we hold that as a meeting right so if so I guess my question then would be
because we obviously we'd have a quorum depending on how many of us are able to go to that right would we be would we be able to divide in half and just have two conversations of the points and just like we would maybe if like we were at a workshop and we'd break into two tables I don't know if that's I don't know if that aligns with nervous okay I'm just thinking about it simplify it if if Maureen says though we have it as a general yeah we have it as a general but it would have to be okay you know it's certainly something that we can send out through email that you can just take a look at if you want to meet and discuss it it would have to be pulled together as
a meeting okay just and it could be done that night after this I mean timing-wise we'll we'd still be okay we could you know stop the Workshop open a meeting you know Aaron's live streaming the workshop we could live stream that for whatever you decide you wanted to have what you want to talk about so we would tag it on to the budget Workshop it would have to come before though if it would be a moot point if we didn't have Quorum in that legislative discussion group right if we don't correctly it's a movement correct yes and right now you have a quorum yeah great housing for my suggestion to those who may not be attending it would be very valuable to hear the Victor perspective on many of these advocacy points okay other reports
I attended the tech meeting um and a point of note just to continue with the themes from tonight one of the things that we explored was something called Panorama Playbook it's a library of resources to support SEL and academics and it gives teachers the opportunity to kind of I think track students like across classes and so we spent a little bit of time with that and also just the flat panel rollout there's 50 that are in and several are set up and ready to be rolled out into classrooms there's still many that are going to be set up for the high school and Junior High School and there's trainings that will be done as well for those to support the staff in using them to dovetail on the technology piece from our visits one of
the groups we went into an art room and they were using the iPads and using a new software Pro procreate program and they were teaching the students how to use that and it was again a really exciting implementation of the technologies that are being used in the district but we got to see it firsthand so that was really kind of neat okay and also we had our audit committee meeting this evening prior to our board meeting uh myself Lisa and Kristen are on that committee we went over in the internal audit um the claims auditor gave a report and then the extra class audit and the single audit you'll receive all of those prior to our next board meeting I believe so that we can approve those some minor recommendations and the last one the
single audit there was nothing identified so Derek and his crew frustrated those folks so good job by Derek and your staff in the business office and you'll have a chance to see those reports next time anything else I had a facility got involved in that meeting and Dr Parks and Dr terranova were in attendance are are on that committee as well I'm just gonna quick update on the current capital project um the majority of the work is complete and the library media suite and the PPS Suite conversion is almost there and the PA clock upgrade and the Junior and Senior High I'm gratefully looking at the summary that Mr valise put in exciting that the there was some issues with the internet fiber cable connecting the Transportation Center and the operations center and that was
uh it was severed at one point and it has been repaired so that's a very exciting piece so there's no longer a concern there and the Huddle cameras uh were installed on the soccer fields and those are the cameras that will allow for live streaming when adults and parents and families are not able to attend in person so those are all up and running and uh our athletic director gave an update on that the second thing we reviewed potential leasing opportunities for the 200 High Street Building another piece is we discuss the community survey for the next Capital Improvement project and we're in that planning stage that particular community service only survey only received 80 responses and so there the committee is considering sending that up on parent square and possibly adding it as a
pop-up to encourage more interaction with the community and get more feedback of concerns and so forth and then the last piece is we got an update on the status of the upcoming Capital Improvement project that will be expected to be vote on in July and that a lot of that Capital Improvement project is stems some of the development comes from a big survey that was done on enrollment projections projections and we hired an out am I correct an outside agency to look at a whole host of statistics about live births and building projects and town planning and looking at our potential enrollment and without letting any of that information out and that'll be in an upcoming presentation so a lot of good work in the facilities committee thank you anything else um just as our
group yesterday our our team toured the junior high school for our first building visit and um you know I think we all walked away with just um really uplifted and a lot of gratitude towards the administrative team The Faculty the staff and the students um it was very enjoyable to spend first period touring multiple classrooms across several disciplines several programs and to just have a chance to talk with teachers and students and and get a glimpse of what a day looks like in the junior high school was was very special so um we would like to thank the administrative team for all the scheduling and and planning behind the scenes and for the staff and students for welcoming into welcoming us into the classrooms and having a chance to speak with them it was really
um a great shared experience for for our board I think we were all in attendance and so we all got that great experience that was exciting too so all right anything else item nine upcoming events meetings our budget Workshop Thursday January 26th next regular board meeting is February 9th and then um behind that would be the board of education budget workshop on February 16th so be there or be square right just a reminder to my fellow board members I'm not going to be present at the Thursday the February 9th meeting so if anybody else is out of town got to make sure we have a quorum okay thank you for that if nothing else something ocean to adjourn my Christopher second Elizabeth all in favor say aye aye aye any opposed there's no polls out
there uh motion carry thank you thank you for uh coming thank you staff
