012board when i was hired in december of 19th so welcome back debbie glad to work with you and certainly to lisa kostecki coming on our board of education uh appreciate uh the the uh efforts of you being on the board and look forward to working with you as well so thank you uh just uh actually i'm gonna give three brief updates first uh as we have uh especially the last two summers we have tremendous summer opportunities that have just started for our students it's almost like the campus hasn't stopped if you think about some of the things we're doing we're currently having an extensive extended school year program for students with special needs across the entire district that goes for six weeks from july 5th to august 15th we also have a specialized reading program
013that we started last year that we're continuing this year for many students currently uh needing additional reading support between grades three through eight that's also six weeks from july 5th to august 15th you'll we also have the summer academy you're going to hear that mentioned by every principal in my campus campus news update a little bit later in the meeting but this is where some of our students both gen ed students and students with disabilities who might not qualify for the extended school year program we've enabled them to get some extra support especially kids who are transitioning between buildings that's occurring july 11 through july 28th monday through thursday and we have a tremendous number of students involved in that in addition we have summer enrichment both through here as well as the parks and
014recreation department as well as through our ptsa an example of that is fun friday summer in richmond available to all students not already enrolled in friday programs which is a lot of kids those occur right now three fridays july 15th 22nd and 29th so if you come by our campus during the day you're going to see a large number of kids participating in summer experiences through also the collaboration and support of our community and our ptsa so that's wonderful to see second update between now and the august board of ed meeting we will have our leadership staff administrative retreat we call it it's august 1st 2nd and 3rd and we're going to have a heavy emphasis on two things we have new members of our leadership staff coming in we want to make sure we
015build that team approach and team culture so that's going to be a big part of the three days in addition to and you're going to hear me talk about this in a little bit around our strategic plan and management plan we're going to really focus on that management plan for 2223 the change process and how we lead and specific areas of learning tied to the management plan that will then be incorporated into our school year this year which i'll talk about a little bit later but that's going to be a heavy emphasis of our leadership retreat it's a huge uh important event because it really sets the stage for how our leadership staff is then is then going to collaborate with our fac with our faculty and staff for the rest of the school year
016so we're excited about that and my third update i was able to attend we actually had it on the victor campus which was neat on june 28th we had a meeting between the ontario county superintendents jack maron who's the chair of the ontario county board of supervisors along with members of the ontario county leadership team to really focus on how can we collaborate at a much higher level around especially two or two areas the first was collaboration between county and school districts regarding therapeutic counseling services satellite counseling clinics as well as prevention clinics across the school districts and across ontario county one of the things we're going to have to do to make this happen the county has a financial means to help us do this which is tremendous and and incredibly positive we are
017going to have to collaborate to get the staff necessary to help with this but um we are in the preliminary stages of really coming up with ideas that would include additional family support services for every district community prevention programs for every district and school-based mental health clinicians and counselors in every building in every school district in addition to our current staffing and this is something that again through the efforts of the ontario county superintendents and jack and the county leadership is is we started the discussion on june 28th it's about a two-hour meeting and uh we made some great headway in fact because of that um we are august 5th we are going to have a mental health suppose symposium we're not exactly sure where the location is yet it may end up being victor
018if we have enough space and that's for staff members small numbers of staff for the from the ontario county school districts as a means to share community-based resources for mental health substance and prevention as well as case management at the school level for students who and families who may be challenged at that time so we're going to start this off with an august 5th mental health symposium it's going to be supported through the folks from ontario county mental health center who are going to assist in presenting the presentation again this one's going to be small for about three to five members of each school district of ontario county we're finalizing the location and then there's going to be another one which is much larger for school districts on the conference day that is similar for
019every district in ontario county in october and in addition to that then we're going to do the specific work around trying to find personnel to be clinicians in each district each building in each district to support our students mental health that was the major focus of the meeting we also talked though about the collaboration between the county and the ontario county school districts regarding potential financial sharing of services for school resource officers currently we pay for our outstanding school resource officer in victor and every district is paying for that in the past the county government has supported some of that uh for for uh school resources uh resource officers um we're looking at ways to potentially increa or have the ability to do that again that's not for certain that's a discussion right now and
020we also preliminarily talk very briefly about sales tax and even ways to think about in the future and these these have been discussions that have happened for many years is there ways to to share the sales tax with school districts or at least portions of the sales tax revenue with school districts so it was a very very positive meeting again the major focus was that collaboration around getting county supports working with school district supports for student mental health and family support and i look forward to giving the board more updates on our progress as we move through the fall so that's my superintendent's update for july are there any questions from the board yes um would the mental health staff would that be start september or not this september no this could be for the
021following year well we're yes that would be the goal i mean potentially it actually the goal would be to see if we can do something before the start of the before the end of this school year but you know the biggest hurdle right now is finding the staff right the people to actually fill those positions because the county has made it clear and i we greatly appreciate their leadership around this that they have the financial means to help support this type of initiative so with this i'm sorry just to follow up um then would would the staffing be based off of student enrollment we haven't gotten to that uh level of detail okay i was just curious thank you that's great news it's very exciting would the funding of this be long-term it's not like
022a one-time it's not a one-time thing they believe that this could be long-term support and collaboration through uh i'm not exactly sure where the county is getting the funding i know some of it's through grant grant work but i the the group that i mentioned before the ontario county mental health center and the ontario county mental health leadership they um are very positive about this initiative and the ability to have it long-term long-term yes okay yeah i would hate to see some you know program start that's benefiting family students and then have the and again because to be clear this is this would be in addition to the incredible staff that works works with our students in our related service department in every district in ontario county so this would be an addition to that
023that would then really work closely with the school district staff to make sure everybody's aligned and who and understands roles and responsibilities related to it so this would be more of a a wrap around service for families so it's it's both it's it's bringing actual clinicians into each building that would work with kids and and really be kind of a combination counselor and social worker to work with most likely you know designated students ultimately then their families as well in conjunction with what our current what our counseling staff and social work staff is currently doing so there would be additional support for that and then the idea would be also to do two things have more of a family support system and center potentially built in each district along with a prevention type setting especially
024for alcohol and other drug needs in terms of families and really wrap that as well so that we really talked about those three different things more of a family support piece which we currently have we're using we're actually utilizing more from monroe county and rochester right now but it would be you know if the county could support us with some financial needs around that that would certainly be costed advantageous to us as well as you know tied right to our county but the the actual idea is to bring in people train clinicians and add staffing in each of our buildings to support our counseling and social work staff that's that's the main focus area would our current social work staff be the referral source yes okay well it wouldn't even but they'd be these would
025be individuals that would be here you know maybe not five days a week but two to three days a week right in our buildings and yes they would be driven and we talked about this their decision making and work would be driven by our staff and that's where that collaboration would set in and and that's what would need to be worked out specifically as we move through that and one that's one of the reasons we're having the august 5th symposium to really focus uh again on what does the county have to offer and that's why they want three to five maybe six people from each district to be there who are working some of some administrators some counselors and teachers just to make sure that they can work some of these details out through that
026process it's definitely exciting it's it's very encouraging to see that partnership happening and it's very critically needed right now yeah and it was the idea of a couple of the superintendents from the county um we all then talked about it and the first move was to go and uh reach out to jack baron so i uh jamie farr and i reached out to jamie far as the superintendent of canada reached out to jack marin he was more than gracious to set up a time within two and two weeks he brought in his team and our superintendents and hammered out this meeting in june so that's really just shared leadership across the county and the school districts very impressive with with with their and they're so open about trying to support us and help our kids
027one other question tim when you mentioned um shared sro funds would that be additional sro or would we reconfigure how that one is much definitely more uh a general conversation there's definitely not a it's a maybe right now okay we're even if we were i mean the best scenario would be we each district would get an additional sro but even if there was some support financial support of our current sro from the county at each le at each district that would be really really helpful but the for our first priority is the student mental health and then we're working through some of the concepts around potentially helping us with the school resource officers because there's some i believe there's some districts in the county that don't have a school resource resource officer right now although
028that's becoming more prevalent especially after this last spring and this has been a conversation that has been going on for a very long time i know it back quite a while ago it came up and we were all very hopeful and it didn't work out so i'm happy to see that revisited again even if the conversations are just beginning um i think that's it's you know encouraging to see that um being revisited as well because i think right now in this climate it's critical for us to really be looking at that and safety and security for our schools definitely okay thank you dr taranova for that update and thank you board members for your questions next item is organizational items i'll first ask for a motion and a second to approve these organizational items and
029then we can have a discussion and the organizational agenda has uh number one appointment of district officers two appointment of other positions three bonding of personnel four designations five authorizations and six other items so a motion to approve organizational items please comments descriptions anything understood we all saw the uh agenda right we're good with that okay uh then all in favor say aye aye aye and the opposed abstentions motion carried thank you everyone item six do we have anyone signing up okay predict it and sign up huh all right item seven is acceptance of consent items we have um item seven a through j first i'll ask for a motion to accept the consent items motion by someone please elizabeth can't hear you [Laughter] second bye any comments or questions on these items please i
030have a question okay in 17 the personnel agenda it's a question actually to our athletic director there has been some recommendations for coaches for the spring specifically lacrosse coaches yet i don't recall that there's been um a release of some of those evaluations athletic and parent parent evaluations of those coaches i'm not opposing any specifically but um those recommendations and our approval is coming off of um surveys that haven't been uh we don't have access to those at this time so so two things on that uh number one there's been a shift and this was actually um it was actually a recommendation from karen ballard when she was on the board last year which was a good one in terms of we've been historically approving coaches by the season but our coaches in victor central
031school district work year-round and are constantly doing off-season workouts and otas with kids out of season but yet they weren't approved technically for that time period because the approval would be for one year and so for one season so we made the decision to then take our the coaches that we know that are coming back um uh you know in terms of the fall winter and spring season and put them all on the july personnel agenda so that we are more legally able to then have them work with kids in the fall and the winter for example if they're a spring sport and in the in the fall if they're a winter sport so that's why we put because you're correct that's why we have the large number of coaches on this particular personnel agenda
032in terms of the survey you're right we we completed a spring survey that i look at along with dewey and that i certainly have given to the board and will continue to give to the board and i take a look at that in terms of feedback and try to you know and dewey and i talk about that that's one piece of information that our athletic director utilizes to make decisions on coaching and certainly i will share that with the board and from my understanding you know there's going to be some concerns raised which is why we have that survey around certain aspects of certain coaches and certain teams which is typical but i feel comfortable right now with the approval of the coaches on this personnel agenda and i'd ask the support of the board
033around the approval just because of the fact of what was mentioned earlier which i think is a good shift which is to approve ahead of time so that our coaches are able to legally under the authorization of the board of education to work with kids throughout the year and then i just have a clarification question from our hr to dorothy and i apologize i i it was just something that came up there's a lot of transitions in our personnel uh resignations for various reasons people are shifting uh taking other jobs and other districts and you know moving forward in their career are you doing exit surveys with these individuals and are um i guess i'm just sensitive to meeting the needs i mean if there's anything that's flushing out that aligns with our new strategic
034plan and how we can be meeting the needs of our staff and do and and and bring it to our attention so you you're not in your head yes so you you're doing it okay thank you so much okay any other what's yeah i just want to highlight going back to the personnel agenda uh highlights some leadership staff hires as well as teachers on special assignment very pleased to recommend the hiring of carrie goodell as our director of math and science for grades pre-k through 12. uh we're very excited to have her take that role she has been a long-term time member of the assistant principal ship at victor senior high school and she's going to do a great job there also we are recommending karen ryan as our new assistant superintendent for pupil services
035karen has over 20 years of experience in leadership and we're thrilled to have her join our team as well that will happen in august and then um yeah and then the appointment of caitlyn mack elliott as a teacher on special assignment for our elementary special education and then leah daniels farron as a secondary special education teacher on special assignment this is going to really uh strengthen our leadership team around special education and related services because we'll have the assistant superintendent for people services and we'll have the two directors uh that we've hired both at elementary and secretary and now we're going to have to teach you on special assignments who are going to support the directors so we really feel like that's going to be a strong system in terms of of of moving our
036special education forward and last but not least just a recognition of brian siesto who is on the agenda for achieving tenure as a school building leader after a successful and continued successful experience working as a high school principal so great thank you any other comments i just had a question from e the memorial tree from class of 2000 do you know where that's going to be planted or i don't but i can find out i was just curious i know there's a grove across from the aquatic center okay that's been started uh mr derek do you know okay yeah that was uh one of the donations the memorial tree valued at 700 and the other one is forty dollars from kristin neenan to the intermediate school in support of the inquiry program so thank you
037for those donations anything else okay all in favor say aye aye aye any opposed extensions and motion carried thank you item eight campus news anyone actually have uh updates from our five principals oh good good news is after august you won't hear me do this but i will tonight promise yes i promise uh campus news victor junior high school is excited to welcome our two new teachers for our 1213 and brand new 8-1-1 special education program as well as a new school psychologist to support the new programs victor junior high also as mr gee wanted to remind everybody which is a great honor was officially honored in late june for being a schools to watch in washington dc so um great news from our victor junior high school in terms of the victor primary school

040mention that we have all the probationary teachers hired as that at this moment at the ecs and now are working to fill our long term substitute and teacher aid positions victor senior high school three three campus news items first profound congratulations to the 343 members of the class of 2022 who graduated on friday june 17th the victor senior high staff recognized emma werkmeister and andrew kovaleski is the two outstanding senior student award winners for the norma olney award and walter henahan award we are so proud of your accomplishments class of 2022. special thanks second update special thanks to those who are supporting our students in a variety of ways this summer those include mrs joe arnitz who's working with students in our 1213 extended school year program and the students and staff are having an
041absolutely great time we also want to thank our summer school teachers and administrators who are working with over a hundred and forty high school students from five districts victor canandaigua honey eye red jacket and bloomfield victor's hosting the summer program this year the students are working hard are succeeding in their coursework as they look forward to earning credit to be ready for september and then finally a big thank you from mr siesto to mrs carrie goodell for her nine years of service as an assistant principal at victor senior high kerry has been his most trusted confident and is confident and has made a permanent mark at the high school kerry improved countless systems in our building including special education master scheduling discipline online learning and credit recovery and as well as how the district works
042with students and families regarding gender identity kerry has always been the champion voice for students who needed someone in their corner she has been a co-worker advisor problem solver problem anticipator champion for the students who need a voice and a friend to all especially him mr siesto mrs goodall could be tough as nails but she is that way because of her boundless empathy ability to develop close relationships with staff families and students and capacity to believe the good in everyone so he she has had a major impact on all our students and we wish her well as our new director of math and science and last but not least the intermediate school it's a busy summer there intermediate is hosting not only the extended school year summer academy program but also victor parks and recreation
043summer program as well as camp invention which is a program for students involving enrichment experiences so the intermediate building is really hopping students are learning growing and having fun together while enjoying our campus and facilities also several intermediate teachers and staff members are collaborating and learning through our professional development opportunities in summer planning as well as participating in the hiring process for new staff members that's campus news for july okay thank you dr taranovo you did a nice job representing your administrators thank you for that okay item 8b is a new pilot course overviews karen finter you are on good evening everybody how are we um i am pleased to be here tonight just to share with you um some of the great work that's going into thinking about how we can best meet student
044needs particularly at the high school by taking some of our existing courses a line to state standard and adapting those courses or tweaking those courses so that they can flexibly meet student needs and so i have three courses that we're piloting if you will next school year to really ensure that the development and design of them is supportive of what we want to accomplish that they help to really provide students with that pathway to a diploma whether it be a local diploma or a regents diploma and to provide opportunities for students to really engage in some real world learning so the first course a pilot course is introduction to optics prior to this coming school year optics course information was built within a year-long course that had a semester of study in chemistry in sites
045in chemistry a non-region space course and then a second semester component that included optics and so students would take that as a third credit of science what we've done is taken those two components and broken them apart to give students a little more flexibility and in doing that we're able to offer introduction to optical technologies as a three-credit college course offering for students through partnership with mcc it is targeting students predominantly in grades 11 through 12. it is one semester about 20 weeks because of the emergence of this particular field there's lots of grant opportunities scholarship opportunities so the cost for students for these three college credits is nothing mcc is confident that you know over the long haul they'll be able to support students and i had the opportunity to visit mcc with our
046physics teachers who will be teaching the course at the end of june and we were able to see the program at mcc and students are in such high demand out of that program it's even they're taking a few courses and then going right into work and having opportunities through their employer to then further their college education and so it really is a tremendous opportunity and i think this week in the news corning is expanding their fairport operation 160 million dollar 139 million dollar expansion over 200 jobs will be added in the area and so we want to provide our students this opportunity and so it's really this course will give kids an opportunity to not only go to mcc and visit the program we're trying to build that in as a field trip but then
047also going into different companies in the area partnering with them or even doing some kind of exchanges in order to really see what this this emerging field is all about so that's an exciting course to share again it's a tweak it's it was the content was embedded already in an existing course but breaking it apart allows us to partner with mcc and really provide great opportunity for our kids the second course is a consumer mathematics course we're projecting this to be a co-taught elective course for a third credit of mathematics um certainly as mr siesto was describing carrie goodell mrs goodell's influence on some of the special education programming at the high school this course is really building into a pathway opportunity for our students in 151 1213 and even in general education settings to
048seek that third credit of mathematics so that a local diploma pathway is available to them the emphasis of the course is on just real world practical applications of mathematics to build financial literacy and con and consumer understanding of mathematics and so um the teachers met and sort of talked about what what would be some of the guiding principles for this course and that quote at the bottom of the slide is really what they developed as the that guiding focus for the course that it's really on the the courses steeped in relevant problem solving and decision making so that students will be best able to inform their future financial decision making and again looking to build in ways to partner within the community and resources within the community so that students are engaging in that real
049world exploration of what's available to them here in victor and the third one again goes into that same program for 15-1 and 12-1-3 students but also offering it and providing it in a flexible way for a local diploma pathway for our general education students looking at a year-long earth science based course that doesn't have the 1200 regents met laboratory minute requirement but does provide engaging in and hands-on exploration of the study of earth and space and so again this would be a a course that was two out of four blocks as opposed to three out of four blocks which is what the regents level earth science course is like in that way it really will seep students in engaging in some of those memorable and meaningful learning experiences predominantly this course is for those 151
050or 1213 special education students but there may be students that because of their programming and because of their needs they may need access to this course again to open up that local diploma pathway for them so those are the courses that we're we're in development of and i hope to bring artifacts and information about the implementation of these courses to the board next year any questions about questions anyone i i do because i'm all over the science piece quick one about the optics there is equipment requirements i'm sure that the science department has a lot of those materials is there anything that needs you need for those teachers to get that course up and running because there is some specificity to that of course they're they're um the way they're um provisioned right now they
051do have resources and materials that they could use to successfully implement in partnership with dr alexis vogt who is the optic optical technician program coordinator at mcc she is a wealth of information as and has provided us with some grant opportunities as well through the through the corning foundation and so we are in the process of sort of taking stock and looking at okay we have the basics we have what we need but what would make it all that more engaging and relevant for kids how many sections are you looking for the optics and how do you get students registered for that there are currently two sections one in the fall and one in the spring school counselors we talked um pretty closely with them all through the initial development of of this idea especially
052when it came to splitting apart that one section and so they've worked to really individualize in some of their conversations with students to attract students but we know that we have to do some more connecting with kids to really hook their interest and to see what kind of opportunities a course like this would provide so that's why this year it's it's really kind of starting small and running it even though i think enrollment the last i looked it was about 11 in each section fall in spring knowing we might get some additional students as the summer progresses or even as the year goes on but we really want to build build the build the course because it's a great opportunity for kids it's great i have a colleague who just she just retired and she's
053i can i you probably know her i do i i've met with her years ago yeah just a fantastic resource i mean really just outstanding um the consumer mathematics two sections of that i miss currently right now there's one okay yeah yeah and that's being taught by um a special ed instructor called it's so it's co-tactical there'll be a special education teacher as well as a now general education mathematics teacher okay and then the earth and space science and cotat cot earth science and a special education teacher right uh but they still need to take the biology they yes they do so what would be their second because you suggested this would be their third credit of science what would be their second environmental science and their um or any of the other rich electives
054that are semester based at the high school thank you other questions i just had one follow-up to the optics program any possibility of i know that mcc has a very strong optics program any possibility of our students going there for a session or two or haven't even thought about that to go in to go and visit there to visit and maybe use their lab for whatever yeah we've um so uh as we met and actually dr vogt had all of the high schools in the area and webster gates chili penfield west irondequoit all came together all the teachers of those courses came together and kind of had a meeting of the minds and were so welcoming to uh the victor teachers that uh that were there um kind of learning the ropes and sharing resources
055and she will do two things she'll come out and she brings some of her students with her to meet with our students they do she does a presentation with them and and even is willing to come through our college and career center at the high school to connect with kids in that way too but then she wants students to come to mcc to see what the program is and so we talked about building that in as a field trip and then connecting it with a visit to somewhere in industry some of the local companies are very receptive to having students student field trips come through kind of take a look at the operation here from some of the students or the the employees rather that are working as optical technicians all the way through to
056the are their advanced degree students so this really is a is a course for students who might not be thinking about a four-year or a phd program but really want to just get into the world of work and work with their hands work in a very creative and emerging field and this would be a great opportunity for them great wonderful thanks anything else thank you it's exciting yeah thank you for this new course it's awesome okay hc is a professional learning plan overview slash approval karen again and kristen williamson and uh i'll let you do your thing and then we'll make the motion for the approval so annually um we come in front of you to sort of share the professional learning plan it's a state mandated document that we have but it really does
057help provide the firm foundation for professional learning across the district and this year it's even more exciting as we're really anchoring into the work of the strategic plan and our management plan for year one and so the professional learning plan really has to provide information regarding what are those areas for need-based professional development what are our victor expectations for participation in professional learning how do we align professional learning to standard need and the principles of effective professional development how will our impact be measured or that impact of professional learning will be measured and then what are the components of the mentoring orientation and induction programs so those are some of the components that this plan is mandated to have we wanted to share with you tonight just an overview of some of the components of
058the plan that we're we're really focusing on and aligning to that strategic plan and we also wanted to recap a bit and share our progress from last year's plan so you can sort of see where we've come how far we've come in working with the plan from last year and then how that springboards to this one this year hi nice to see everyone so like karen said we'll take a peek at some of our progress from last year so we had lots of goals last year one of which was working around that guaranteed and viable curriculum so with our curriculum council we really revise the process that we use pre-k 12 to develop curriculum as well as the template and so once we did that work we of course wanted to prepare and make sure
059that our teachers knew how to use this new curriculum development process so we've been training teachers starting in the winter including administrators into the spring in regard to this new process what process we'll be using that will lead to a curriculum that focuses on depth of understanding we people are really excited they're really excited to know exactly what the expectation is how it will work and that it's consistent pre-k-12 it will look the same so we've been doing that training and we are quickly also writing lots of curriculum this summer already using that template again great feedback teachers are really feeling valued being a part of that process writing their own curriculum another one of our goals was around effective instructional strategies so that included our work around learning statements which all of our educators
060pre-k 12 engaged in that learning in the fall and then we had follow-up sessions whether it was via faculty meetings professional learning community meetings as well as our new teachers engaged in a session really just for them to kind of support their learning in that we've been working on the science of reading which is really just the body of research that tells us how children learn to read and spell and so we've had lots of our educators engage in that learning and that will continue into you'll see it in the in the plan for next year as well we have our one-to-one technology integration so casey wagner and angela afranti have been giving lots of training not only on the hardware of the technology that we now have but also the software that we can
061use with that to accelerate learning we have wonderful coaching cycles um with amazing coaches julie johnson lauren less and holly knox so those were a big um you know impactful strategy last year for our teachers to engage in those cycles and then we've been working with our math and reading intervention specialists so making sure that they feel well versed in the strategies they use for intervention identifying the skills that children need to work on professional learning around progress monitoring things like that and then we use our boces science kits so we've been making sure that our our teachers are well versed in those how to use those kits and really dig into those new standards again technology being a focus so we talked about that a little bit with the one to one that will
062continue our multi-tiered systems of support all of our buildings have engaged in that training via boces the high school is engaging in it right now they have three more sessions with their teams and then we'll be coming together to really synthesize that information and create a plan moving forward another goal we have lots of goals last year another goal was around the new york state social emotional learning benchmarks so we have our comprehensive guidance plan so our school counselors have been thinking about those standards embedding them in the comprehensive guidance plan through panorama we did a student survey so we have information that can again inform their instruction and we've also begun to integrate those standards just this week with our fourth grade curriculum in particular they're writing an in an integrated unit with social
063studies and ela and they're really looking at indigenous groups and one of the social emotional learning benchmarks in new york state is identifying and recognizing the contributions of different groups of of people so it fit really nicely and we were able to embed that naturally into that unit and then this past year we had those new physical education standards so our pe teachers have done an incredible job unpacking those standards karen and i recently had the pleasure of training them in the curriculum development process they're a really fun group and so they'll be taking those standards and embedding them in that curriculum development process so as we take the work from this past year and and move forward um we're really looking forward um to aligning to our year one management plan and so this
064professional learning plan we've really tried to identify those areas within the three pillars of our strategic plan where we can look to provide professional learning support for our teachers around the culture pillar around the learning and instruction pillar around that guaranteed and viable curriculum and then our student supports an opportunities pillar really understanding inclusion and understanding social emotional learning at the highest level so that we can continue that work to integrate so they're not standalone silos so we're going to share just a quick overview of each of these these pillars how professional learning will will support this work and what what we hope it will look like for next year all right and so again these are aligned to our strategic plan and specifically that year one management plan um so we're looking at cultural
065um culturally affirming awareness and practices that goal really comes right from though that strategic plan so the goal is to make sure that all of our staff much like we did with some of our other work around learning targets and the science of reading building that foundational understanding in that foundational language in regard to the state's culturally responsive and sustaining framework ensuring that our teachers are well-versed in inclusive practices and then that our teachers understand and our administrators understand culturally responsive practices when it comes to in particular that curriculum development process so in terms of learning and instruction kristen talked a bit about how we've started the process to train all of our faculty and staff on that new process really leading to a depth of understanding we're certainly going to be continuing that work
066as new curriculum is written and we want to ensure that as curriculum is written we're really keying into those components that help drive learning and achievement in the classrooms and so how are teachers using things like enduring understandings and essential questions within their instruction to really to really spark student engagement and interest and then how are we using assessment information not just summative assessments but also formative those day-to-day assessments and information that's collected how are we using that to drive learning aligned to our curriculum and we certainly don't want to lose sight of the great work that was done this year around learning targets and clarity and we want to continue to focus on that throughout the year and again we'll continue to focus on high levels of student achievement so we have a plan
067for this coming year and the one after to really continue that learning around the science of reading that two-year plan will actually guarantee that teachers get all of the modules that they need in that that body of research we will also be engaging with number talks training so that teachers are prepared to help students think through their mathematical thinking and then when we think about those new next generation science standards we'll be providing support with our teachers with phenomena driven inquiry and of course the technology keeps coming so we're adding two more grade levels to our one to one so we'll continue to support teachers again with how to best use the hardware and then also the software and the applications to accelerate that learning and then that last pillar student supports and opportunities we
068want to ensure that not only our special education classrooms but our our buildings are inclusive and that we are ensuring that we're all supporting student growth and achievement and so providing those that understanding of best practice providing that understanding of really whether it's therapeutic crisis intervention or or just plainly the function of behavior making sure that we all have consistency and our language and approach in working with students in that way and then also the the sel benchmarks really you know when we unpack sel what is it that we're really looking at and while each of these are are seemingly separate items it's really about connecting it all together that it's not about sel as a stand-alone technology as a stand-alone curriculum as a standalone but it's as as kristin mentioned how are we putting
069it all together to integrate so that that that plate of learning that has academics that has sel that has student support embedded within it is seamless and that teachers are confident and competent in meeting student needs and thinking about that integration and so our professional learning plan really helps to highlight highlight those components within it it also again from new york state we have to include our mentoring program we have to include some of that mandated training of that every year um as staff come back we provide and and in addition to our english language learners and and how we're meeting those needs within our classroom so that's within the plan as well and we thank you very much we know we've provided lots of information to you you do have the full plan so
070you can take a look at some of the pieces that that we've mentioned tonight and as always if there are any questions we're happy to i'm happy to entertain you let me let me get a motion on the floor in a second and then i'll ask if we have questions for you so a motion to approve the professional learning plan by elizabeth ii bye debbie okay any questions board members clarification well you must have done a wonderful presentation we're all set good job all right thank you so seeing no questions all in favor say aye aye aye aye any opposed extensions motion carried thank you item 8d strategic plan update dr taranova i'll allow that that's a tough fact to follow um this should actually mirror what you just heard so um i want to
071give an update on where we are with the strategic plan and the one-year management plan again we have a five-year strategic plan that's been created this past school year we are now focusing on the one year 2223 management plan that will really be the foundation of what we focus on throughout this school year just a quick reminder of where we've been last summer and then into the fall we created a large strategic planning committee that where the the authors really uh through just a ton of information from the community and the staff and the students around what we value in victor central school district and what we want to focus on in the future this group put everything together all that information and then use the leadership of the facilitators from the university of rochester
072to work through all that information in the fall and then the winner and to ultimately create a draft which ultimately became the final document that is our five-year strategic plan so that was work that started about a year ago and culminated probably in february of 2022 with the strategic plan if you remember and you've heard it multiple times already tonight three main pillars of the strategic plan involve culture learning and instruction and student supports and opportunities as part of that process last school year we really tried to identify what were our year one focus areas out of that five year plan it doesn't mean we'd finish everything the year one folk in year one but at least start certain things in year one that was then turned into more of a management plan for 2223.
073these were the steps that we followed through march uh and june of 2022 again uh dr lynn ertle and bob mckeavny both retired superintendents fantastic consultants from the university of rochester worked with us this spring and are continuing to work with us as we speak i'm actually meeting with them tomorrow regarding the final makeup of our one year management plan that rough draft has already been created and now we're refining it and we're really going to work through that so what does it really mean so what we did is and this is what you kind of heard from karen and kristin we took culture and really specified it more more directly to the areas that we want to emphasize for this school year 2022-23 that so these are our goal areas around culture for 2022-23
074reviewing and revising the district's mission and vision that'll probably take place in the second half of the school year because of the amount of work that we're doing in these other areas at the start of the school year but definitely that's an area to focus on we have a great mission and vision that has really aligned us well and far long before i was here we just want to take another look at that with uh with constituents and make sure that we have have the proper mission and vision going forward we're going to focus a lot on staff wellness not just physical and emotional wellness of staff but the wellness of staff in terms of their relationships with kids and how we capitalize on the on the um the positives that occur as staff work
075with kids and the importance of what we do every day and influence our children's lives there's a lot of specifics around that certainly district safety as you've already heard is a major emphasis we're very proud to be hiring a coordinator of district safety hopefully in the next three to four weeks at the latest along with two full-time security guards to support our district's safety and then of course the coordinator of district safety will then play a huge role in creating the safety plan moving forward working with all constituents whether it's during the school year in the summer and increasing the safety of our district long-term budgeting as well as facility objectives right after this you're going to we're going to have a conversation about the y building that's for sale that's going to go into
076the work we're going to do this year around just long-term objectives around budgeting and finances as well as facilities and certainly uh you talk you heard kristen mentioned cultural culturally responsive education and instruction uh it's really focused on diversity equity and inclusion and we have diversity across the world across our country and across our community it's really about making sure people feel uh included and have equity and how do we make that happen over time and work collaboratively with all kids to make sure they feel welcome and a part of of a district community every single one of the over 4 300 kids so that's a lot to tackle in the first year around culture but and again we're not going to finish all these in one year but those are the major focus areas
077in terms of learning instruction karen did a much more specific job that i could ever do around this this is all building on what we've really started last school year with the hiring of the two directors and the work that they've done along with our leadership staff and our teacher leaders around curriculum instruction and assessment we're going to continue to build an understanding of the most effective way ways we can develop and revise curriculum we're going to really dig deep into using data to inform our practice not just quantitative data but qualitative data especially around our subgroup performances which also leads into that concept of the diversity equity and inclusion a strong alignment of our professional development development with curriculum instructional needs and supervision and evaluation of teachers and achievement data so they're all aligned
078and certainly an alignment to our management plan and building and department plans and again social emotional learning and its alignment to not only academic learning but also equity and inclusion we're really trying to build a culture where we build social emotional skill sets with our kids in the midst of building academic skill sets they're not separate certainly you have to focus on on each at different times but they go together and really when you're when you're teaching kids resiliency or perseverance or self-awareness a lot of that happens obviously while they're working through academic challenges with their student peers so that's something that we're going to really heavily emphasize and it's tied directly to learning and instruction and certainly student supports and opportunities you see the major emphasis special education you heard me talk earlier about
079our new leadership structure around special education and related services starting with the assistant superintendent for pupil services a lot of work around vision and mission a lot of work around really taking a deep dive in our programming that we offer kids elementary through secondary what's working what's not working so well how do we improve that so that all kids are able to be successful in victor and then what are the resources necessary to support that programming and certainly our committee on special education and the great work they do how do we continue to improve that process moving forward again these are not going to be fixed and improved at the level that we want them to be in one year but we're going to make significant headway we believe this coming school year around those
080areas and it starts with a vision and mission of special education that leads to response to intervention especially the work we do with our general education our students in general education who are struggling whether it's academically or social emotionally there was a strong emphasis in a strategic plan around english language learners and programming related to that we are increasing our numbers of english language learners in our district how do we make sure that we support them and support our staff in doing so related services such as speech and language psych social psychologists social workers counselors otp etc they're so critical and how do we make sure we maximize that relationship between those professionals and the teaching staff and certainly again you've seen this across all three culture learning and achievement and student supports the whole
081concept of social emotional health and how do we build upon that moving forward as well so next steps again continue to work with bob and lynn in july to include more specific action items and evidence of accomplishment for the management plan tied to the areas i just discussed we're going to utilize the 2223 management plan then to drive everything we do whether it's the objectives for the three-day leadership retreat august 1st 2nd or 3rd certainly then that leads to work that we are hopeful that we can accomplish the second half of august with our shared decision making building councils as well as our teacher leadership teams from each of the five buildings we want to get them together briefly in august to really go over the management plan and make sure they have a strong
082understanding of their role their important role in leadership around that and getting even more granular and specific around what it might look like at each building as well as each department level moving forward and that's how we set the goals for the for those areas and certainly also to frame individual goals with our leadership staff in august as we move forward and then utilize that 2223 management plan and all the work that we're going to do in august to have a really firm understanding of how we want to work collaboratively with our faculty and staff in those first three conference days before kids come in september everything is aligned it's all about really building that system of alignment across from the strategic plan all the way into these individual meetings with staff members uh ma
083really making that management plan come to uh fruition so that's where we are in terms of the management plan right now are there any questions from the board related to our progress and next steps anyone okay okay we're good thank you so the next one is uh yours as well the ymca building discussion okay no i'll i'll i will allow that as well okay thank you so uh we just had uh a visit of the y building which to give a quick real context and i'll be quiet and let the board talk because um we just did a tour of the y building it's uh the y is selling that building which is on our campus you see on this slide if there's a lot of ifs here if the boards decide decides to pursue
084the purchase of this uh facility then we know actually taking a step back we know as you heard me earlier talk about facilities planning and financial planning that a that we have a district that there's a strong strong likelihood it's not going to get smaller over the next five to ten years and in fact there's a strong likelihood it's going to increase probably not to the level in terms of student population that we saw 20 the last 20 years last 15 years because it's been relatively flat the last five to seven years but we know that housing is building rapidly in the town of farmington especially in the school district of victor and victor is victor the victor town is not getting smaller either so we anticipate that we're going to start to see at
085least some increase in student enrollment we know the five buildings right now are packed whether it's over a thousand kids in our intermediate building or even over 600 kids in our early childhood school we have jam packed buildings we've had them for a while and we're also looking at more innovative ways to bring kids back into our district uh who are involved in out of district special education program so that space is going to be a big need some of the other areas so so we have that and then we have you know concepts how can we take this building if the board decided to purchase it and use it to our advantage based upon those needs in some of the areas we've talked about continue to expand our upk program professional development space one
086of the one of the concepts is bringing some of the programs and where we do professional development now which is currently in normally in the five buildings that we have kids putting them into some of the space at the current y building so that we free up more space in our five buildings for kids in classrooms as well as a pretty big need right now for our kids who are out of district right temporarily out of district for for various reasons right now they are getting a bare minimum of education if we're lucky we're able to get res uh tutoring from boces and it's not boces fault it's just the fact that there are no tutors out there so some of our kids who might be out two weeks six weeks 20 weeks are getting
087extremely limited tutoring and education during that time there are other districts around us that have done some innovative things around full day programs for kids in those situations both academic and social emotional support this building would be a great area to to do some innovative things tied to to really keeping our kids engaged who can't be in the regular classrooms for the time being and certainly other needs such as daycare robotics storage space that opens up other classrooms so those are just general ideas concepts that we could use that building for um the reality is what we learned today and correct me if i'm wrong but the sellers of that building the y are asking for proposals from anybody who's interested in buying the building by a week from tomorrow which is friday july 22nd
088and so i think and correct me from again correct me if i'm wrong or lead it in a different way mr delucia one of the things we want to talk about tonight publicly is just the the feeling of the board regarding whether we should pursue purchasing that building and if so do we want to take a look over the next week at a potential offer for that since the deadline is 5 p.m friday july 22nd yeah i i guess i'll begin i certainly would support the purchase of that building i mean it's it's right on our campus uh it could fill some needs um that we have now and in the in the future so i certainly would like to take the opportunity to provide an offer i know that we just walk through the
089building it you know it has potential and we do know from talking to the realtors that they do have one offer currently couldn't get them to name the who that was but i wasn't big enough to convince them apparently so yeah i would support that i'd like to hear from other board members as well please well i would just say you know i'm not opposed to purchasing i think it makes sense it's on our campus i'm more concerned with what it's going to be used for you know some of those things that are listed up there are things that we could use this current space we already have so i want to make sure it's being used for a unique thing that is not something we could use our current campus for because i i
090think you know this is taxpayer money you know and we have to justify that where it's a need that we have for the campus and if we have current existing space within our building that can be used for some of these things it's hard to justify buying another building and um but i think that there's plenty of things we could use it for that i think we could justify for i think it i want to know like what would be the process of how that final selection would actually happen um so it i mean i know there's a committee that's working on it but what would be the final decision of how that space would be used because i don't want to just vote oh yeah yeah let's let's buy this and then it's used
091for something that to me i don't i didn't see the need that we we purchased another building when we have after school plenty of open space around the campus that could have been used for that purpose so what would be that process i think is it facilities committed well the facilities committee would play a huge role in that process um i think part of that is narrowing it down to these items right now and a combination of those four but yeah it still needs to be it still needs to be the process needs to be further defined of whittling this down to actually what's going to happen with that building and and we certainly haven't made that final decision yet so when you talk about unique uh things i mean i do think i agree
092with you and i think this concept of using at least some of that space to support our growing need around kids who might be out of our district temporarily for periods of time and right now don't have a place to be educated is is a great thing that's i would call that a unique talking about that that would that would make sense to you yeah and that's that's some of those things i would think would have a hard time justifying to be honest with you um but but that would be a unique need i would consider that a unique need serving our students that you know we don't have a place for right now to come in and or possibly creating another program for a need that we have within our district that we're not
093servicing appropriately or we could service better i should say um that would be a unique need and so that's that's my concern like so before just voting i just want to make sure that you know i just want to know what the process will be that where we would finally determine that so that i know that that's the direction we're going to actually yeah and the challenge is to finalize that is the timeline we just heard about today which is we need to decide whether to put a proposal together by next friday which doesn't mean we you know so finding the actual you know deciding on this by next friday is probably not necessarily practical but the concept of these types of er of things especially like you said unique experiences that we aren't able
094to do and also again i also think bringing certain programs like potentially the teaching learning center and some of our technology over to that building frees up space right now that we don't have because it would free up space in the five buildings that we're currently using for those things which then could create uh opportunities for unique things in those five buildings as well as as we get more kids and bring programs back with special education it allows us room to do that so that's why that's also on there the concept of shifting some things to this building which frees up space in our five buildings but i think it's probably going to need to be a combination of a couple things like that so how would that process look moving forward to come to
095that final determination i think we we have a facility when's our next facilities committee mister 27th so the 27th of july july july july we have a facilities committee where we're going to i think one of the major emphasis points would be trying to whittle down those needs but also we need to get input from our staff and our leaders our leadership staff and our teaching staff around that too so it's something that would probably i would say take a couple months to to really nail down i think we have the concepts already but we want to really nail it down both through the facilities committee and getting some input from staff and making sure that we have that to make final decisions around it i think i think what we need to consider tonight
096however is is that deadline of a week from friday to figure out whether we even want to go in with with a with an offer because subsequent to that i mean should we be successful with an offer then we have a process that we have to follow you know we have to get um certainly it's board approval then it's the community would have to vote on it so it's not a short process for a school district to purchase a building but what we need to consider is and give the nod or not on whether or not we want to consider putting in an offer by a week from friday and then i would ask derek for some advice in terms of how that would work what that what might look like so is the currently
097in real estate market the big thing now is the delay negotiations is that what is this a part of the delay so what they generally do now for real estate at least in home purchases is they name a very specific deadline and all the offers come in and then they open up all the offers and then they depending on if there's many of them or whatever they can go back and then ask you would you okay this is the highest will you go higher than this i mean have they did they discuss that process with you well they did mention that at our tour that they would take all the offers that they have and then consider all of them they didn't say specifically that they would go back to each entity that made an
098offer and barter i guess was what you're describing i didn't hear them say that but they did say that their process would be to then open up all their offers and determine which ones would be acceptable to the why i want to offer a little clarification and it's it's it's a subtlety the y is not currently on our campus the y would allow us to expand the footprint of our campus so it's not something that they have been rent i mean it allows us our campus to get bigger so in the future if any other properties for example between our two entrances become available it's a consideration we're i don't want to say we're landlocked but in a growing community we have a growing school district for a long time we had a footprint that
099could accommodate our our population so at any opportunity to expand our campus footprint is an opportunity that we need to consider the fact that it is adjacent we have control of what goes into that space control of how to use that space the fact that it is adjacent to one of our entrances is a very very positive opportunity for a lot of different things and i totally appreciate what you're saying trisha there's a definitely has to be a process in how that space is used and going back to what uh mr delucia was saying this is this first decision is are we going to take this opportunity to ex very rare to have this opportunity to expand our acreage to utilize in whatever needs that our our district demands and i think it's you know
100prudent um and it's kind of a unique zoning uh it's not it can't it's not zone residential it's a very unique population or uh consumer that could purchase this space it is it is residential it is residential yeah it's an r1 zone yeah okay was that changed right it can't be commercial yeah can't be commercial right it can be a not for profit it can be a house or a school so but the fact that it is so visible as you enter our campus and then it's not just the building itself it's the land and the space that's around it that in the future that particular building could have be expanded upon and we could move into the existing grassy area that's behind it so it allows really allows for more expansion in that space
101in that that whole acreage so so bottom line you would support absolutely i i toured the the facility some time ago last year uh when it had kind of started becoming conversation as the facilities uh and it's a great i mean there's so sky's the limit in your imagination of how creative and again a lot of creative opportunities i look at the fact that you know some of our students whose needs can't be met special ed students whose needs can't be met on campus are i correct me if i'm wrong i think it was a 3.5 million dollar budgetary item of students going to boces services where we might be able to bring some of those services that would be i think 3.5 million just bought the building and that was one year in our
102line item budget that definitely buys the building and then some and now you're talking about savings and transportation being able to provide some of our local staff integrating those students into activities on campus when they're when they're off site they wouldn't be able to participate in the senior walk on campus and all of the activities and the pep rallies and and so it it's it goes back to our strategic plan that we're we're bringing those students back to back to campus which i think is if i had to pick how we use that space yeah that would be top surprise and i agree with you on that actually you know that's my my concern is when i see like storage space like i buy you could buy a shed and stick it in your back
103i mean that's just absurd okay so i mean we have students i have needs we we just talked tonight about all the needs our students have like that's that's what should be the focus i would just say this that it's more of a semantics the storage space piece would be to free up the storage space that we're currently using in classrooms that can't have kids in them because it's storage space so it allows us to we have storage that we're we're using in every building that currently we can't now we can't take classrooms that are already fitted for classrooms and use them as classrooms because we have more and more things to store because we're getting bigger so part of this one idea might be and again this is this is a concept to use
104part of that building for storage space so that classrooms that are already coded for kids can be utilized for some of the programs that we're talking about now that's the difference in that's why that was up there i guess is what i'm just trying to clarify okay again at the risk of stopping any brainstorming on acceptable uses on the table tonight is do we want to put in an offer by next friday so that's i'd like to hear other comments thank you um i'm interested in putting in an offer and i understand that the facilities group won't be meeting until after the deadline for that offer and i'm terribly sorry about my voice that being said touring the building tonight it's obvious that there needs to be some work done bringing the building up to
105code cleanliness um you know a variety of things i'm wondering if between now and next friday if it's even possible for us to not only consider the price that would cost to purchase the building but the amount the initial amount that might be needed to make to bring the building up to code and create usable space regardless of what that space is going to be used for um just so we can see the building price tag but additionally what could be projected to get this building ready to use on campus i can and i'm going to speak really generally and then let the person who knows more than i do speech mr police but the concept is right i mean there's going to be a cost of the building and then there's going to be
106a cost to renovate the building for kids and that cost would most likely come out of the next capital project that we're currently working with the facilities committee and i'll through a process over the next year to really define but it could be anywhere between a million to two million dollars to to actually put that building into shape in terms of what we need to serve kids now that though would be a perfect opportunity as part of the cap the next capital project to support that not all of the next capital products because we got some significant other needs but certainly a portion of it did i say that correctly but you correct me anything i just said mr veliz oh thank you just so that we know that part of the utilization because i'm
107on that committee depending on the utilization there's more or less funding if students are in the footprint of that building we get far more state aid to renovate that space to bring it up to code so for example the concern that it's storage space would be extremely costly because it's not aidable but if we can create an opportunity where kids are actually in that space it actually brings that additional ticket item down from the purchase price and then a follow-up question um what academic year would we anticipate being able to utilize the space so 23-24 okay okay thank you um how many square feet is it and relative to what if it's a new build at the way of the land but 5 080 square feet okay so the cost per well that that would
108be dependent on the purchase price cost per square foot are you saying i correct me in like the cost per square foot if if there's a purchase as compared to a new build yeah it's certainly less i'm sure right that that's what i wanted to hear what you know what the difference was okay that's interesting and just so you know too the land is um it's a little over a half an acre that's it okay yeah okay other comments i think it would be foolish not to make a proposal it's not on the campus but it is adjacent we're growing i mean right why not take the opportunity to get grab that building now so derek what would this look like i think we could also from a specific standpoint derek and i are going
109to sit down depending on if you want us to proceed with this we'd sit down tomorrow and work out some of the details of what this offer might look like and then um i would put it into my board of ed update for saturday okay so that the board could weigh in on the concept over the early part mid part of next week to decide if uh it's still a go or not okay so i'm just looking for a a nod do we want to do this or not yes excitingly yes okay i'm seeing everybody nodding right am i hearing everybody's head shaking yes yes all right derek do your thing man yeah thank you yeah all right thank you uh where am i i'm at 8f approved the following field trip senior class of
1102023 to boston mass from 323 23 to 325 23. uh motion please bye elizabeth second by lisa any comments have fun class all in favor say aye aye aye any opposed extensions motion carried thank you uh item g is second and final review of the following policy weapons on school grounds policy 1611. we all have had the opportunity to look at that for a couple of months now any first i'll take a motion please to approve motion by debbie second by um kristen any comments questions seeing none all in favor say aye aye aye aye any opposed extensions motion carried thank you eight h review and signed policy 2160 school district officer and employee code of ethics so we will need to sign those we'll do it at the end okay uh meeting reports the
111first 9a is monroe county school board association dues for 22-23 i'll let maureen give us some details perhaps so last year the dues were i think i put it in here yep for 2122 the dues were 10 660 and this year the dues are 11 191.50 so a difference of 531.59 um because it involves money i'd like to to take it as a motion to approve the um to approve the dues and and the payment of the dues if the board so chooses to continue with monroe county school boards association which i think you've already said you would so i just wanted to make sure that you knew what it was going to cost this year okay so i'll entertain a motion to um i'm sorry absolutely did you make the motion [Laughter] motion by
112kristen second second uh lisa can i now we can have discussions yeah thank you i i know that um when maureen gave the balance difference between the years um there were i believe it was one or even two years where there was no increase during covid they've made a move they've restructured they've gotten zoom and technology up and going they've done a lot of improvements to be able to reach out to districts that are in are so i just wanted to it seems like a big jump but um from year to year there there wasn't an increase for a year or so yeah and i i truly support uh us belonging to monroe county school boards association it's it's been good for us they do very well at um government relations and advocating for student
113needs so um i think it's it's a benefit to our district uh better than ones we have belonged to in the past sure any other i agree any other comments i think it's good too it also supports our district clerk so i think it goes beyond us as board members okay all in favor say aye aye any opposed extensions motion carried thank you item 9b monroe county school board association committee reports uh none from me hasn't had any um standing committee updates anyone kind of quiet okay um upcoming events next regular board meeting will be august 18th 7 15. uh b is new teacher orientation august 22nd 8 to 8 30 a.m right here right here i don't know who i am at that hour in the morning and then superintendent's conference day is august
11430th from 8 to 9. okay one thing that's uh not on this agenda but i'd like to just mention that's in the works is maureen and i have been talking about the board retreat we're trying to find some dates in august looks like early august is probably not doable um i i'm starting vacation tomorrow i'm going to be gone for the balance of this month so um i certainly don't think i'll be prepared the first week of august [Music] we know that tim is on vacation in in august from eight to twe august eighth through the twelfth and i think lisa is on vacation the week of the 15th so we're trying to find out yeah so we're trying to find some dates laureen is going to be reaching out to you folks it's always
115a challenge trying to find a date that we can all meet and um and the other aspect of this is we've reached out to sarah visinggar who can do who can facilitate the retreat for us it's at a cost of 1800 i think that's reasonable if you agree we could pursue having her help us in can i ask what she would be would she be like in a workshop teaching setting like or are actually facilitating i mean is she bringing like a workshop where we professional development is that what you're thinking that yeah that plus the the couple of things i'm thinking about first of all is you know certainly we have our board goals and our progress against them so that can be an item also the results of the board self-evaluation identified a
116number of areas that we certainly needs to pay some attention to and sarah also has offered some programming that she can deliver for us that would be like learning like professional development so any and all of that maureen is is working on helping us to identify what that agenda could look like uh so we'll continue to work on that if you have suggestions you know please send them in i would because i'm not here for a couple of weeks i would recommend that you send them to maureen and copy the rest of us in so that we can take a look at what those items could be i promise i'll take a look even though i will be corrupting my grandchildren and fishing on my vacation i'll i'll take the opportunity to you know look
117at email and you know if there's something urgent send me a text and i'll they'll point me in the right direction um so that's what we're thinking at this point and maureen hopefully will help us discover a date that will work and we're looking at either day time or maybe a couple of evening so i just i think i want to take a kind of a straw poll to see what people would prefer what works best because you know end of august people are going to be going back to to school as you know the teaching staff um and people do work so the thought process and i talked to sarah is we could do a full day or we could do like two evenings say 5 30 to 8 5 30 to 9 i
118think is what we talked about 5 30 to 9 2 evenings so if you'd rather do the two evenings versus the full day then it would be good to know because then it might add a little more flexibility i just don't know what people's wishes are either is fine with me just it's a matter of laying out the calendar and color blocking who's busy when there might be a day it flushes out where there's a day during the day if that works but i'm i'm flexible up until before labor day okay depends with me i have jury duties i don't know how long that's going to go oh no i've never had jury duty in my life so i but it can last it can really i was on for eight days it could also
119be very quick yeah yeah i have a feeling like excuse me quick excuse me i'll just yeah you could be bored for like half a day and then released yeah so thank you in advance maureen because i know that's a huge task to lay out who's available when yeah evenings okay yeah oh yeah evening evenings is fine evenings would be safer for me because i don't think what time does jury duty end usually 4 4 30 or earlier yeah depending on the job is does monroe county school board association have any kind of specific work um what do you call it workshops workshops i'm sorry i'm tired workshops that they have that they offer that is you know pretty i'm sure that they must i'm just yeah they did it for us last year um
120[Music] and that was uh sherry oh that's right that's right yeah um and it was free there's a new executive director i'm not sure if she is qualified or experienced enough to continue that service i haven't talked to her we could certainly reach out amy thomas yeah um who knows i mean it's worth asking him yeah we could reach out and then if if we choose to um go with sarah she's also offered their facility so we can do it on their site and they have staff that could help us with you know things like catering and that kind of stuff to bring in coffee and goodies or whatever and then if we choose to go with sarah i think we would need a motion to approve that that expenditure which we can do in
121august i believe at our august board meeting so um you want us to reach out to monroe county school board association first i think we should okay that's something you could do for me maureen yep yep thanks i mean sherry may come out of retirement and do it again that's a possibility as well yeah i mean she's not she said she isn't going away she's just changing her role so she may be willing to come back and i think if she's in retirement though i don't think she would come as free i think that would be a concern right right but i know i mean that's a benefit i mean amy thomas would be a good resource yeah at least check in tonight yeah definitely okay um that's all i had anyone else for the
122good of the district are we going to consider um assigning a mentor to our new colleague for the year oh thank you yes and i heard someone might be possibly interested but i don't want to like hug her so if anyone else is interested or you know like i nominated elizabeth to be the mentor thank you would anyone like to second that a second all right well thank you i think we have a mentor for you yeah thank you for stepping up and doing that but certainly you know yeah my phone is always available i'm i think like i told you i well i'm an old guy i'm in awake a lot during the night so very supportive i could attest to that with a 12 15 text that i got one time right right
123what are you doing that's when i start sometimes okay if there's anything else if not a motion to adjourn elizabeth second lisa all in favor aye aye opposed we have had a meeting thank you very much you
