is approval of this evening's agenda i will entertain a motion to approve the agenda please motion by kristin second by elizabeth any comments or questions on this evening's agenda i just asked for clarity about the senior trip and i got that it's the trip to boston but their lodging is in burlington so thank you for the clarity i'm there very good we have a motion in a second so all in favor say aye aye aye aye any opposed extensions motion carry thank you item three superintendents update the floor is yours timothy thank you mr delucia uh i will be brief i know we have some special guests here tonight that we want to get to i have four quick updates first of all i want to thank everybody for for their involvement in the strategic
planning process we've talked about this every month as you know um we had our fourth meeting a full day meeting this past wednesday where we actually have completed a rough draft of the strategic three to five year plan it's been a it was a tremendous accomplishment there still needs to be work but there's still work to be done but it's absolutely i believe an awesome document that's going to help lead this district and focus our district over the next five years in january district leadership will work to review the plan and especially look at some timelines around it and some other little intricacies of it and then the plan will be presented to the board of education towards the end of january and through february so the board of ed can review it and then
our hope is that through march from march through may we'll be able to do committee presentations using the group from the planning committee that created the plan from all the information gathered from the entire community groups of those individuals will do presentations to all stakeholders between march and may and obviously we'll also utilize that information to support the 2223 budget process as well and then in may and june the university of rochester will come back and work with us to create a one-year management plan because the goal is to take this larger strategic plan create a specific specific yearly management plans with actionable and definable goals that we can then evaluate our progress on on a year-to-year basis so a lot of work still needs to be done but an incredible job by this community
and by the 36 i think members of the committee that worked over four full days to create the plan so i want to thank everyone for that and i'm really excited about the work we're going to do coming in january quick covet update we currently have 25 active student cases in the district and seven staff members from my understanding thankfully everybody is okay that's not no one is seriously ill which is obviously our number one priority our active cases have actually decreased since last friday i did put in my memo to the community uh that the state department of health is not allowing us to test students out of quarantining for extracurricular or co-curricular events including athletics what does that mean that means we're we were one of the first districts to be able to
test students as long as they were asymptomatic out of the ability to have to quarantine but be in school and we were also doing that for after school experiences as well the state has told us we're not allowed to do that so we are still allowed to test students to stay in school but we're not allowed to test them out of extracurricular athletic events music events those types of things as i said in my community message it does not make a lot of sense to me personally to to not allow kids who were together all day in school because they were able to test out of being quarantined to then have to quarantine after school so we are doing our best to try to formulate a logic to the state department of health around this
and hopefully we'll see some changes but we're not sure also there are going to be some venues and i want to make sure people know this for different events such as rit is one of them that are going to be requiring vaccinations for people to participate in any events in their locations right now rit i believe is one i'm not sure if there are any but we anticipate there could be some other venues that's going to be a challenge for us especially with our student performance and our student athletes who are not vaccinated so we obviously want to give as many kids an opportunity to participate in these events and these activities but we are dealing with the challenge of having certain venues that are now requiring vaccinations so we're going to be as clear
and transparent about that as possible and make sure people know that what their options are around that but i just want to make sure people understand that that's uh that's something we're dealing with two other quick updates before we get to the uh special guests wait uh thanks to the human resources department we had our first in a long time full day job fair today as you know we're significantly challenged by staff shortages due to covid in all areas there were multiple districts today unfortunately they had to close down because they didn't have enough transportation thankfully we're not one of them but we continue to look for ways to add staff so um so thanks to the human resources department dorothy d'angelo our assistant superintendent for personnel and then katie liu and kate selleck the
three of them did a yeoman's job to to bring in a large number actually of candidates for bus drivers food service cleaners teacher aides along with teacher candidates today we think that this will help it won't solve any everything but it's certainly going to help a little bit in terms of our staff shortages and we hope to have some really fine people come out of this job fair and work for us so especially in some of the most difficult positions to fill so i want to thank our human resources department around that and then lastly just some reminders around some holiday events i can't tell you the music concerts and the and the um level of performance that i've seen so far from whether it's our vocal groups or our ensembles we also we we
have a variety i think we have 15 total concerts throughout the month of december there is two more next week the senior high concert on the 13th in the intermediate on the 15th we are also proud to have our junior high ensembles playing at the east view mall tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock so uh hopefully none of our seniors will be there but any adults that have some free time around the east view mall at 11 a.m it'd be great to go see our junior high groups play it's a great thing for them to do also i want to just put a shout out for the scottsdale memorial classic that's going to be december 22nd in the senior high gym where we're going to have both the varsity girls and varsity boys basketball teams play
canandaigua um and it's certainly beyond that it's just a it's a real tribute to an incredible person that unfortunately i wasn't able to meet because i started after he passed but he was a beloved coach and mentor to thousands of kids in both victor and canandaigua he passed away far too soon in 2019 this classic is a memorial to him and it benefits the canandaigua churches in action and a huge benefit for the victor farmington food cupboard and thanks it's sponsored by the lions national bank and the basketball boosters and um again we are playing against canandaigua in the basketball game but we're for them and with them in our tribute to uh mr zhan and that's december 22nd the festivities start at 5 45 then the girls varsity plays and then the boys varsity
plays so i just want to again lots going on for the next couple weeks before the break and that's my superintendent's report mr delusion thank you for that important update dr terranova appreciate that okay item four is our presentations recognitions i'm going to ask stewie to kick it off for us thank you this is dewey weimer as everyone knows our director of health physical education and athletics and he is going to recognize uh some incredible athletes but more importantly better people both our sectional winners in swimming as well as our sectional and state championship girls volleyball team so thank you so much for having me again dewey weimer director of health physical education and athletics um before i introduce our guests of honor tonight i do want to publicly thank dr terranova the board of
education our teachers uh building and district level administrators and parents for your support um it's been a phenomenal fall season super successful both in competition and in the classroom and in the community um so all things to be proud of coming out of the athletic department and it's all because of your support so thank you and what i'd like to do right now is i'm going to ask head coach of the girls championship volleyball team matt glover to come stand with me i'm also going to ask assistant coaches beth beau and freeman fessler and i'd like the team to please stand over here so we could recognize you as well notice they're wearing their medals with pride which is amazing so before i go into some of the amazing accomplishments of this squad because i
know how humble coach glover is and he may not say certain things so i'm going to say them on his behalf this is a scholar athlete team not only were they the new york state public high school athletic association class double a champions they were the regional champions the section five class double a champions and they were a scholar athlete team uh second highest ranking scholar athlete team in our our school and that's only second by two one hundredths of a point so really their their top dog in everything uh as i say your name just please put your hand up so everybody could recognize you first team was emma workmeister alex mckenzie and helen sheehan emma was also the mvp of the uh monroe county division second team was emily willow and caitlin murphy
we had honorable mention ava pezzimenti our section five class double-a all-stars were emma werkmeister alex mckenzie and helen sheehan and emma was also the mvp i'm seeing a pattern here new york state all-stars this is new york state our entire state double a first team we had two representatives emma and alex once again second team helen sheehan in our class double a new york state sportsmanship award and i hope i don't mess this up you lets go fargo did i do that all right she's our sportsmanship recipient for class double-a congratulations just a few more few more honors i'd like to mention this is also the sportsmanship award-winning team so not only did they win all the accolades in the on during competition on the court they're also the sportsmanship honorees emily willow led new
york state and assists helen chen led new york state in hitting percentage emma led new york state and kills and was on the second team all-american and then where's coach glover get over here mr glover again he's humble he will not say this but he was he reached the 800 win mark for his career 800 a tremendous tremendous achievement and was named the american volleyball coaches association region 1 coach of the year which means he will be honored on december 17th at the ncaa convention in columbus ohio so that's the north east so lots of accolades couldn't be more proud of this team we had a lot of fun watching you throughout the year and traveling around to watch you i'm going to hand it over to coach glover thank you so much for having
us here tonight i also want to thank all of you who participated and watched this team and traveled out to the new york state championships to watch these girls play i know i saw a lot of you guys in the stands and i'm sure a lot of us watched on the streaming as these girls won their state championship i am very humble with these girls um they they speak loudly on the floor um but tonight i want to talk about who they are as people which means more to me last night we had our banquet and i honestly thought was probably one of the last nights um i'm gonna get to spend with these 12 seniors and it was an emotional night um but it was a very amazing night that was packed with a
lot of memories from all of our parents our families and our players i'm going to read a little bit of what i wrote last night to some of the board members so you guys can kind of feel what we went through at the beginning of the season we had a goal we called it unfinished business after winning sectionals last year they were hungry for the real season to begin the season that allowed us to compete for the new york state championship two phrases came to our mind as i as i run a program this is um this is my personally my third program that i've taken to new york state championship and third team that has won a new york state championship with me this team is probably one if not two of the teams
i will remember the most for what we've accomplished on and off the court two things come to mind to me is culture and communication if you can do both these things you can be successful on the court and off the court we embraced the saying we not me so many teams so many players say that but it means a lot more when you live it this team each and every one of them they lived it they accomplished something only few teams can honestly say our culture on this 2021 team was incredible every team we played wanted to be this team they wanted to watch this team they loved this team yes we were a new york state champion but at the end of the day these kids were winners in life nobody ever pointed a
single finger when we made a mistake we owned it we had each other's back it was one of our sayings all season long that we have each other's back and i honestly loved every second in practice and every second in the matches that i spent with these kids they will forever be remembered not for what they accomplished on the court but how they handle themselves off the court um i do i do want to i want to do something i think it's pretty cool and i think the board i think you guys would uh appreciate seeing some of this and hearing some of this if you guys were a one-year senior raise your hand a one-year senior play for one year okay um they finished league play 9-1 21 um match play and 49-1 overall
um if you're a two-year senior raise your hand this this group finished 18-2 uh league play 38-2 match play 67-2 overall if you're a three-year senior raise your hand this group finished 28-2 match league play 56-3 match play 108-5 overall if you're a four-year season a senior raise your hand this group finished 38-2 league play 76-4 match play and 151-7 overall those numbers speak volumes to the dominance that these kids had on the court but again you heard mr weimer speak about the 12 seniors that we had on this team and the ability for this team to have every every single kid standing here be a scholar athlete which is incredible for me in a proud moment as a coach going forward some of the things again that we did this season is that we
had four tournaments we played in a very competitive penfield tournament with 24 teams and won it they finished in a very competitive uh victor tournament with 32 teams and they won it they finished in a baltonsville tournament with 20 teams and they won it and then they finished in the shenandoah tournament which the board graciously lets us go to every year and they won that tournament as well so we played a grand total of 12 of the 20 teams in the state championship and beat all of them all year long these are memories that these girls will have for the rest of their lives but the most important thing to me is the fact that they're family i'm going to miss every one of them the last thing i want to say and i apologize
um the last thing i want to say is that ironically um this team has always put themselves ahead of accolades and that's just something that's so special about these guys that i had these two trophies last night at a banquet and i put them in the podium like this and we went through the whole banquet and i went home and i forgot him and i forgot to give out our most valuable player and our most improved player and i would like to take the opportunity right now um why i have another podium and a microphone in front of me just to say that um i have two awards i'm a work meister you are our mvp of the season you were our leader you are inspiration you are the player we all wanted to be
around [Applause] um and the most improved player was hard we have a lot of kids that worked hard every day a lot of kids that if you heard these kids speak in their senior speeches they got their roles they understood their their parts they they got what a team is about and again that's why i keep saying they're winners in life and i hope my kids can grow up to be like you guys our most valuable player our most improved player goes to a kid who had choices and last year she had a choice to play lacrosse and miss part of volleyball because the seasons overlapped but this year she made a choice to come back and start something and finish something that this team wanted to finish and we couldn't do this without her
this year and her presence on the court her leadership her voice and her just being who she is and this year's most improved players ava peziment thank you so much for inviting us to here tonight and thank you so much for honoring these girls we're gonna have to stay there for a picture so if we could have you get a little closer together and then coaches come over as well gosh that's right you guys can get that [Applause] once again congratulations to our state championship girls volleyball team [Applause] next i'd like to introduce coach brett leader head coach of the swimming and diving program along with our section 5 champions if they're here aaron to hollander maddie sargent meredith hogan and eileen kopp eileen is here to represent the whole program thank you um before
before i hand the podium over to coach leader just a few things similar to the the volleyball program i'll start with aaron to hollander she was uh our 200 individual medley and 100 backs um aaron won the 200 individually medley and 100 backstroke maddie meredith eileen and aaron won the 200 and 400 freestyle i actually had the opportunity to witness those events which was pretty exciting um these four athletes plus zoe uh prezinia placed fourth overall in the new york state championship amongst public schools and that includes advancing over pitts for correct coach all right we had several monroe county first team honorees aaron hollander meredith hogan eileen kopp amanda miller zoe presidia sargent scarlett aldsoldski morgan waify and emma wood second team grace flansberg and olivia worrell i would also like to say that
aaron hollander was the monroe county division one swimmer of the year and she was interviewed by nbc 10 for her uh fantastic crocheting i don't know if you got the chance to watch that and we had five all greater rochester selections on this squad which has yet to be released so i don't want to name them at this time but without further ado coach brett leader i will thank you guys for having me here tonight i just want to point out eileen is here to represent the group the other three are actually at swim practice right now i just passed them on the way out of the pool so should give you some idea of how and why they're accomplishing some of the things they are but but thank you very much for having me
here this evening i'm honored and excited to have the opportunity to speak on behalf of maddie sergeant aaron hollander eileen kopp and meredith hogan for extraordinary young ladies whose praises i can't sing enough and who are truly the driving force behind our competitive success this year this group of athletes runs the gamut from freshman to senior from primarily high school athlete to seasoned club swimmer with 10 years on the varsity team ranging anywhere from two to five years the combination of these personalities talents and very different backgrounds lent itself to a unique and truly special core around which we were able to construct a remarkable team this season two years ago the victor women's team broke a three-year dry spell by winning the 200 freestyle relay its first class a sectional event since 2015. only
one of those athletes was on that relay last year victor chased that success by claiming seven sectional titles out of the 11 swimming events two of these ladies contributed to that win total this year with these four athletes at the helm victor continued with its newfound streak of sectional success by winning four more titles also boasting three incredibly competitive second place finishes to other very worthy competitors this group accounted for over 64 percent of our total points scored at sectionals leading victor to its fourth straight second place team finish along with another teammate zoe president who is not here tonight this team also wrote the sectional momentum to break three of the four longest standing school records remaining two weeks later at the new york state championship meet these athletes again represented themselves tremendously erin
de hollander made the podium in two individual events finishing fourth and fifth in the 500 freestyle 100 breaststroke with literal minutes only between all four of her swims while maddie sergeant also contributed to victor's point total finishing 13th and 15th in the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle eileen kopp and meredith hogan also qualified for second swims at finals in all of their individual events the 400 freestyle relay finished fourth in a very competitive race and in the most exciting moment of the entire meet at least for me was these four athletes coming together to finish second in the 200 freestyle relay representing the highest relay finish at states in the history of the victor program and dropping nearly a half second from their sectional winning time which is something that is largely unheard of at
the state meet all of these incredible performances together resulted in a fourth place overall finish at the state championship far and away the highest finish by any team in section five the competitive accolades for these young ladies obviously speak for themselves they played a central role in a season that i will never forget and one i enjoyed being a part of as much as any that i have ever experienced as a coach it is not the victories the points nor the records however that i will remember most about this season or about these athletes it is their ability to accept the high bar set by their predecessors and to set out to equal those efforts and best those accomplishments as daunting a task as that might be which set this group apart there is an
energy surrounding the women's swim program here at victor it's been growing for several years now as the excitement about what might be accomplished if we continue to work hard and trust each other is realized and embraced year after year these four athletes were the stewards of that energy this season they curated it expertly and the results have proven to be wonderful and rewarding girls congratulations on all of your well-earned success thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you've done for me for section 5 and for the victor program this season thank you thank you so much and once again congratulations to all of our champions i'll have a further update during campus news thank you that was great thank you very much maureen do we have a sign up mrs sheet can
you check and see if anyone's signed up nobody no one okay so public participation uh no signups we'll pass over that item um yeah after after those uh wonderful recognitions uh the rest of our meeting is kind of boring so if you ladies don't want to stay you won't hurt our feelings [Laughter] but if you want to stay in and watch important work being done stick around thank you thank you congratulations [Applause] thank you okay so we continue item six acceptance of consent items we have six a through h so i will first entertain a motion to accept the consent items a motion by christopher second by tricia it's letter i that's actually letter i sorry through i okay thank you my apologies all right any comments or questions on any of these items i
just want to uh mr delucia recognize on the personnel agenda uh the retirement not till the end of the not till june 3rd thank goodness of an outstanding school counselor david roderick from the intermediate building he's been a fixture at victor for many years and he is retiring but we wish him uh health and wellness uh in his retirement but really want to thank him for the incredible work that he's done for just a ton of kids and their social emotional well-being so he'll be greatly missed at the end of the year thank you for that comment anyone else seeing no others all in favor say aye aye aye any opposed extensions motion carried thank you 7a campus news tim would you like to assign people or are we going to it looks like uh
mr weimer will be going first okay thank you rob said i had to go first i'm just kidding i'm just kidding good evening uh my name is dewey weimer director of health physical education and athletics uh once again thank you for the opportunity to give a brief update of our athletic programs one thing i i wanted to certainly mention is that we were once again a school of distinction where 100 percent of our varsity athletic teams met the new york state public high school athletic athletic association scholar athlete status um that's the tenth season in a row where 100 of those varsity squads have met that um met that honor 72 percent of our varsity athletes had a 90 or greater gpa they did all that while balancing their academics athletics clubs jobs and other
activities during this fall semester we had a cumulative gpa of 95.42 which is absolutely amazing i have to thank our coaching staff student athletes teachers administrators and all the parents for taking ownership and continuing to keep their academics their paramount priority during their high school careers last year we actually earned the school of distinction honor which is our fourth time in the last 15 years uh third in a row where all of our varsity teams earned that honor which once again is absolutely amazing and it's all due to our fantastic support so in addition to the the honors that you heard here i also want to mention a few highlights from our fall season from some other athletic programs which were all tremendously successful cheerleading i'm going to mention just the first team honors we
had first team sarah perrone and jordan schaefer we're first team for cheerleading uh cross country adam barbado and tim summersono qualified for the state championship we had four first-team all-stars for football nick leonard joey hawk truck casey kejone and broden o'leary girls golf also had first team honorees of caitlin keenan and kiera lally both agr representatives soccer andrew dempsey and thomas gravino were first team and that team also earned the sportsmanship award that's the second team earning that this fall paige ford was our first team honoree for girls soccer maggie galewski was the all-tournament selection and coach o'hearn also earned g g coach of the week girls tennis uh lumia everybody knows lemia and natalie pipes they were first team and they went to the new york state tournament for doubles interestingly enough similar to
the crocheting with aaron de hollander i also convinced nbc 10 to come talk to lemia because she published the book last year during the pandemic so if you check on news channel 10 we had two of our student athletes represented for things that they're doing in addition to all their academics and athletic accolades volleyball we had first team honorees rohan chitri and dylan mcfadden dylan was the co-player of the year moving forward we're really excited to to be starting it's an incomplete team right now but it at least gets us starting with a nordic mod a program that's cross-country skiing so we do have a couple interested student athletes right now who are competing with the pittsford squad um and we're just getting rolling with that so the interest is starting to grow a little
bit i'm very excited about our coaches level up program this is where we've paired head coaches together based on similar interests and abilities and what they do is they visit each other's practices and they give each other ideas um and they also are support systems for each other so if someone has a question they can rely on those other coaches it's a six month collegial program that we started back in september it's been great it's all about relational leadership and moving from coach to a leader our participation numbers are continuing to climb and we're always actively recruiting students so if they do not perhaps make a squad we always offer other opportunities to participate in other sports where we don't necessarily have to make cuts so we're always doing that and trying to find other
ways to make sure that our student athletes have an opportunity to represent the great school community of the victor blue devils that's the athletics campus report thank you thank you mr weimer thank you hi good evening keri pender from the early childhood school great to see you all we are really excited about the month that we had last month as well as some upcoming events we're just wrapping up our parent teacher conferences which have been such an invaluable opportunity to partner with our families and better understand and support our students i think we're realizing that more now than not than ever after the last couple of years we had how truly important that partnership is and how those chances to communicate really strength and what we can do to support students speaking of our partnership
with parents we also have a really strong shared decision-making building council that's working this year with a goal of focusing on the social emotional learning and wellness of our students and our goal with that team is to really focus on how we can support families with supporting social and emotional learning the parents that have been a part of that committee have recognized similar to how we have in school that this is an area of need both at home and at school and would love to have those suggestions and guidance around what they can do at home to support our students so each month as we meet we are putting together some tips and ideas that we can present to parents in our newsletters we're rooting that in our work or the work of the collaborative
for academic social and emotional learning also known as castle which has social emotional standards in several different areas the first one we're going to focus on is social awareness or excuse me self-awareness which is all about the ability to understand one's own emotions thoughts and values and how they influence the individual's behavior across context it's a really important foundation for everything else that comes after so we really appreciate the partnership that our families are showing for that building council around the building the season is certainly in full swing everything from practicing storytelling skills with the classic folktale the gingerbread man to designing stem projects to help him cross the the river and hide in a fort we also have students learning about holidays around the world i got the chance to don't be surprised here
but i got to the chance to smell sauerkraut for the first time today learning about how the dutch tradition of eating sauerkraut around welcoming in the new year and the kids of course really love that we're very excited to try sauerkraut not so much but what a better way to experience that than to smell it and of course everyone's enjoying the chance to play outside in the snow our the construction of our new wing is also very exciting we have five new classrooms and a small instruction space that is going to be opening um it should be ready in mid-january which is really exciting and the recent walk through we saw that they were putting finishing touches on the floors and walls and it really was coming together beautifully furniture is arriving mid-january and we
are ready for some moves in a january um late january which speaking of some moves in january well some of those moves are going to surround some very exciting news we have which is our new pre-k grant that we've obtained so special thanks really needs to go out to dorothy d'angelo derrick belisse dr terranova and deb lay for their support with us acquiring that expansion if you didn't know children who attend preschool are less likely to repeat a grade in school have stronger social emotional outcomes improved long-term health and improved academic outcomes so we are very excited to be able to offer that for 40 additional students in our victor community starting in january so we're just very excited for that opportunity and thrilled to have the support of the community in bringing this program
to ecs thank you gary i just had a question how are you advertising for these 40 spots that's a great question so deb lay is going to be help us helping us with oversight we're meeting on friday and we're going through some of those details so we can definitely get those details out soon there is a current waiting list karen and that will partly be some of some of the the resources we'll be using is looking at that current waiting list part of this grant was really looking at is there a need for pre-k in this district and we certainly always have a pretty significant waiting list and so that's always where we're going to start especially since we're here mid-year you're welcome anything else great okay thank you good evening heidi rob principal at
the primary school sticking with um some of our sports teams this evening the hockey team the varsity hockey team came down to the primary school i think this is twice that they've come down so far this year and they've been working with our sec a second grade class in miss mrs zink's classroom and it's i had the opportunity to go the other day i would say that that partnership is mutual it it's positive for both our second graders and the hockey players it was so great to see them working together and i know they're coming back again at the end of next week to do another activity together so thank you you know to the athletes for coming down and being such great role models to our second graders it was such a cool experience
to see we also are going to be restarting the mentor program at the primary school that's something that's happened in the past where we have some students that may or may n you know they just don't have quite the connection that some of our other students have and so our teachers kind of put in a referral to say these are students that would really benefit from a connection and so now we have staff members and administrators you know everyone around the district that can sign up to be a mentor to some of our students this is a program that's happened in the past but did not happen last year due to covid so we're excited to have that up and running in january there are two students in our multi-age program that have in the
past asked for donations for the food cupboard and that had just happened in the multi-age program and this year they opened it up to the entire primary school so they did the advertising and they did all of the work with collecting the food and they brought all the food to the food cupboard so what a great experience for these two young students and they collected over 600 pounds of donations to the victor farmington food cupboard and that was donated right before thanksgiving so not only was it great for the community but for these two leaders at such a young age to organize something so exciting for our school community i have been working um through an entry plan as i've started you know many of you know i started in july and i've had the
opportunity to be individually with the majority of the staff whether it was small groups or individually and from that information that i gleaned i was able to create a survey and that survey went out to teachers this week and and to staff and the surveys really around you know what are some of the strengths at the primary school and what are some areas maybe that we need to improve and so i'll be working over christmas break to really put all of that information together and i'm hopeful that'll give us some direction as to what might need improvement and what's going really well there so i'm very excited to take a look at those results so that we can move forward with some great building goals we also have been doing the parent teacher conferences which
gives us some time without students in the building we've had one half day and one full day without students and then we have a half day again tomorrow we've used that time at the primary school to provide some training to our teacher aides amanda byrne our assistant principal has organized that and it has been so well received not all of our aides were able to attend that training on the first session of it so she's running it again tomorrow and i've heard nothing but great feedback that training is around a little bit with a responsive classroom it talks a little bit about some of the morning meeting and the purpose behind that it also goes into some of the child development so you may have a second grade class with a seven-year-old an eight-year-old and
a nine-year-old and maybe even start the year as a six-year-old and there's a big difference between each of those developmental ages so we spend a little bit of time talking about what it is that makes a seven-year-old really special or what it is that makes an eight-year-old special she also talks about some of the teacher language that we can use with students that's more positive that will help them grow socially emotionally and then she ends the training with just a little bit about how to support some behaviors that we may see so it's been really well received and we're excited to continue that training tomorrow two last quick things one i have to thank karen ballard she sent an idea for a bulletin board around what brings you joy and so some of our teacher
aides have put those up around the school and some of our students and staff have begun to write in the words joy what brings them joy so i'd invite any of you to stop in our building and take a look at what brings people joy bring a marker and you can write what brings you joy as well the last thing i have to share which is just such a sweet little story we have a little third grader who's just had a tough week and he came to school the other day dressed dressed as dr t and he had a tie on he had a dress shirt on and for whatever reason when dr terranova goes around the school he's just he just adores him so i emailed dr t and asked if he was around
to stop by and it was just a highlight of the student i wish i could show you all the picture but it just made the students day and then we talked about this mentor program and dr teronova is going to be this child's mentor and and he's just so excited so you know it just goes to show that we all have an influence on kids and we show up every single day and and just you know be the best person we can because you don't know who you're gonna influence so thank you to dr t for that that nice little visit and doing some weird work with them thank you everyone thank you very cool he's the same height as i am actually [Laughter] so before speaking of bringing joy i mean part of it's
joy part of its frustration but kevin schwartz is coming up to the podium to give his last campus news for the intermediate building and i have to need to thank him for everything he's given to this district he is very soon to become the superintendent of the naples central school district and when i think of kevin i think of the his his absolute dedication to kids i think of his ability to balance the needs of kids and the community that he works in with the needs of his staff and making sure that his staff feels valued and understands that he's there to support them but also to work with them together towards continuous improvement he's an incredibly strong strategic thinker which is really important in education and i've just absolutely enjoyed working with you and
learning from you and having our conversations around just education and leadership and i appreciate everything you've done for thousands of kids and victor so i'd like to give kevin a round of applause and appreciate thank you tim i appreciate that and i've got a few thank yous too i'd like to share in a minute but just before we get to that um a few updates from the building um i wanted to make sure that i extended my thanks to our vis staff for their generosity and participating in our annual giving tree event which supports hundreds of local families every year i think we all know this year given the state of covet and the economy it's probably more important than ever so special thanks goes out to our main office clerical staff for the many
hours they spend organizing that and distributing all those supports for our families so thank you for making that program a reality and i also wanted to mention too november and december are often the months where from the administrative perspective we're spending lots of time in classrooms during doing our observations and i just continued to be so impressed with our teaching staff both our veteran staff as well as our new staff with their commitment to creating engaging lessons you know using learning targets the success criteria we've talked about and they're doing this in a time when it would be really easy to say let's push that to the back burner we've got teachers out with quarantine their kids may be quarantined there's different kids in the classroom each and every day because of quarantine but despite
that our teachers continue to set the bar really high and i attribute that to the fact that our kids are really beginning to settle in now to get back into that routine this year even though it's taken a bit longer than previous years with covid so i do appreciate that and as tim mentioned again this meeting is bittersweet for me as it's my last year as a victor administrator and over the past eight years i feel so blessed i've had the opportunity to work learn and grow here in this caring community i feel i'd be remiss if i didn't thank a few folks as well so first and foremost i just wanted to say how grateful i'll always be to our vis staff their willingness to embrace change to collaborate and always put students first
that's going to continue to serve vis very well certainly michelle maloney for all her years of outstanding service and i was so thrilled that she's going to be stepping in for several months while the replacement is found i think that's going to be great for the building stacey thibodeaux as well along with michelle for the support knowledge and their consummate professionalism i could have never asked to work with a better administrative team i have no doubt that tom cheevers is going to step right in and fit that role too and also mike i want to thank you for your leadership in vta um just for your advocacy your dedication it's always been easy to work with you so thank you for that i'm equally grateful for the many support staff members especially marianne wake up
jody drew and hoddy pionee in our office our aides maintenance employees cafeteria and transportation staff who work tirelessly to support our students and they've done this during some exceptionally challenging times the last few years they really are the unsung heroes who make all things possible for kids every day of course our students and families and all the support they provide we've been so lucky to partner with such dedicated people through our building council through pta and other collaborative committees many of the successes i think we've experienced in vis never would have happened without that trust and collaboration and lastly i just want to extend my thanks to you the school board and my administrative colleagues both past and present who've always been a source of support and insight for me it's been a privilege to
work with all of you you're all dedicated leaders and servants and it's my hope that many of these relationships can continue moving forward so while my role as principal comes to an end i just want everyone to know that my family and i will continue to reside here in victor and we look forward to supporting this district in any way possible from the perspective of parents and community members so it's been my privilege to serve here i'll always be grateful for the opportunity i thank you and wish you all the best [Applause] that's fun to follow up good job kevin thank you for the time we came in together at the same time and it's great to see uh that you're kind of moving in a new direction for yourself you will be missed uh
certainly from us as an administrative team and the support you've shown us along the way so thank you very much um so i have a few updates some of which we've already heard um but they're important to remind us and kind of talk about again we've had a great concert season just kind of culminated this week with our vocal performance on tuesday night and our instrumental concert last week and to kind of tim's point earlier you know our kids really performed at such a high level and i was particularly impressed when we looked at some of our eighth grade ensemble groups and their ability to play at that level knowing where they were last year that's a great testament to the kids but also the teachers who were really very creative and innovative when many
districts kind of backed off things like the arts and the performing arts and music because they couldn't figure out how to do that in a remote capacity so that was a real thrill for me to get to stand up on stage and introduce you know getting the band back together and having live music and also our community support we had a lot of families show up to really support our kids live and for aaron being able to put together the live cast which i heard from a lot of staff members really enjoyed being able to see that um even though they weren't able to be there in person so that was fantastic and that continues tomorrow i think it's time mentioned also we're sending a group over to the mall we haven't been able to
do that in a couple years and that's a real highlight for our community and i think it's a really good sign to show that you know our kids are willing to give back to the community which where they belong to and bring some joy at a time when people want that and again it gives them a nice platform and a chance to showcase their talent so for the kids and the teachers that are headed there tomorrow i want to thank them we've got a couple other things that kicked off again that we're bringing back you know things we missed out on we had our first math olympiad competition was today and it was a packed house in terms of students who wanted to participate our geography bee program is back up and running again and
we really had started that just before the pandemic hit and that's something that we're able to continue so it's nice to see our sports teams back on the playing fields and in the gyms it's great to see our music program back on stage and performing and and our students who are interested in the academic side being able to kind of push forward in that way as well too from an academic perspective we're looking closely at our program of studies right now at the junior high school from a special ed program perspective and we're really looking hard at what options we may need to consider adding next year or maybe in a year after that and so there's been a lot of work done around kind of planning for for students in that regard and our
science department in particular this past month has been working very hard on kind of adopting the new standards and doing a lot of curriculum writing and i say all of that because it comes at a time when working in a school building is not easy it's very challenging trying to re-regulate an entire system you know we've been a dysregulated organization and i don't mean victor schools i mean education kids and people it's hard to get back to what we think is going to be normal school and i think we all came in in the fall thinking it was going to be much easier than it has been and we're making great progress but when we hear all the highlights from the campus news understand that comes with a tremendous amount of day-to-day effort on the
parts of our kids and our families and our staff and our teachers to continue to kind of provide these opportunities for kids so as we go into the holidays i'm really hoping people get a chance to reflect on the progress we've made i also get a chance to kind of reboot and regroup and come back in the beginning of the year ready for a really solid spring so thank you for all the support you've shown and uh hopefully get a chance to see some of these great things that our kids are all a part of over the next few weeks ryan yeah i had a question about math olympia and geography is that after school they are after school programs yep and sue i has found ways to make the for the math olympiad students
in particular alternative ways for them to participate if they can't stay after school because of transportation yeah i was going to ask if transportation hinders those who don't have access to yeah it probably does to some extent but i think what the teachers are trying to do is be creative for those types of opportunities the kids can you know utilize a study hall during the day where they might be able to complete some of the the competition side of things so that they're if they're not able to stay after school we're finding alternative ways for them to be able to try to do that can you see this number of students that are participating in yeah i can look that up for you yeah i don't mean i don't know the top of my head
no no but you can just send it on to us yeah absolutely yeah and i would just say that one of the consent items that we have that the board approved tonight is to work with a transportation company to increase the substitute bus drivers and that would go directly towards our work towards rectifying the after school activity runs and that was one of the things that i think was really important that mr velis worked on and was able to secure so we hope to see that uh really influence things uh thanks to the board's approval tonight i think it'll help with the academic support that's needed yeah yeah and we've had we have had some great derek and success and the district on our wednesday evening wednesday after school program the three to five the
students who have participated now we are able to get them transportation home from an academic support model and right now we have about a four or five to one ratio of student to teacher support which is fantastic and we have a wide range of content so students in the course of two hours can work on two or three different subjects maybe not with their specific teacher but someone certified in that area and dave and i have been kind of tracking the progress of those kids to see is that turning into higher performance and it absolutely is turning into a higher degree of work output and that work is at a higher level we're hoping to expand that and get a few more kids to be able to stay right now we see somewhere in the
neighborhood of about 40 every week that are staying and some of those are taking advantage of the transportation and others or not others are able to kind of figure that out with their families as well so thank you great thank you evening everybody brian siesso principal victor senior high school um thanks for allowing me to be here tonight have a as i've been kind of doing every month an academic a professional learning and then a student group update followed by a couple of quick thank yous so i want to start in the academic realm give a highlight of something i think is absolutely incredible one of our special ed and english teachers amelia poss has a reading class and i found out today that they've been doing a whole class study of the novel make
lemonade by virginia ewer wolfe and the students have really taken to it there's some some pretty tough uh discussion topics within the novel uh along with ebony empathy and understanding they've been navigating some of the topics such as homelessness and poverty uh as it impacts society and the students have been so motivated by the by the book that they want to put their learning into action and the students have suggested that they do something uh to make a difference in society and to serve the homeless and youth in our community who are underserved so they researched as a as a class some local agencies um to help find uh one that would help service teens and young adults and they were drawn to the center for youth which is an agency in rochester that serves
homeless youth in western new york and the finger lakes it was established 50 years ago so they've decided that during the month of january they're going to raise awareness and collect personal hygiene products at school and then they're going to donate them to the center for youth and they've reached out to one of the directors for the center a woman by the name of kathy cummins who's going to come in and talk to the students about the organization and the other ways that they can help contribute to make a difference in society so um this connects directly uh with how you take a piece of text and apply it uh to everyday life and they're actually doing that uh through their their learning and then their action and their follow-up so i wanted to start
off with that tonight because i think that's just an incredible example of what a teacher is doing to inspire kids to really make a difference we're continuing with our professional learning for our staff this wednesday we had a faculty meeting where we did some learning about lgbtq plus terminology for our staff we're trying to continue to work to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all of our students and staff so it was a great educational opportunity for us to work on building a stronger culture at the high school and this falls under our larger umbrella of one of our building goals this year revolving around diversity equity and inclusion i've got to give a shout out to amy shannon our one of our assistant principals leah daniels farin a school psychologist mallory horsfall one
of our english teachers and todd forest the social studies teacher for putting together this presentation we're going to do a little bit more of a follow-up next month as well and finally finally i wanted to talk about one of our student groups this this month the victor winds project they were on display uh monday night at our winter at our winter concert the victor wins project is a student-led ensemble group made up of musicians from our symphonic band and wind ensemble it was started two years ago by emma bentley who just graduated this past june emma is a music education major at case western reserve university and what she really wanted to do is have a group of students that could get together learn how to conduct and just play some music that they really
liked on their own almost like a jam band so they would meet once a week mrs brewer was kind of like the unofficial advisor to the group but it was completely student-led and on monday night the group has continued and it's led right now by carly bentley and owen healey and mrs brewer just kind of advises the group but really the group kind of runs itself and on monday they did a medley from charlie brown christmas at the concert was absolutely fantastic so they meet every tuesday during the activity period in high school band room and students can join the group at any time and attendance is flexible because we know that students are busy so every week it's kind of like a different mixture of who shows up to play one instrument and they
just to kind of take it from there so i want to make sure that i highlighted them and finally just a couple um quick thanks this one's going to be tough amy shannon one of our assistant principals is leaving we couldn't be happier for her she's become the new principal at bloomfield high school she's been with us for five years she's made a huge impact in our school culture she's instituted uh the phrase choose kind which is one of our hallmark phrases at the high school she's going to be greatly missed she's going to be with us uh through most of the holidays but she's going to just rock it at bloomfield so we're very happy for her i want to say especially thank you to kevin for your leadership everything you've done for us
helping me as a as a new principal we're going to miss you too and finally i have to give a huge thanks to the high school staff with the absences that we've had for sickness and covet and everything else there have been some days where we've come in and we've wondered can we cover all these classes and whenever we reach out to the staff and tell them here are the open spots that we have that we need covered they've stepped right up and we just can't thank them enough so thank you for to our our faculty and staff so those are my updates thank you nice thank you heidi first off kudos on the survey i think it's a fantastic idea and i would ask dr when it would be appropriate to get the general
results of that survey not not to get into a question by question but if there's anything then that would rise to your level or the board's level from a standpoint of how we plan on supporting the different buildings and if something from that came out where we need to look at was that something then that we have to consider from a budgeting standpoint specific to a building and then you know how that extrapolates out to the district yeah so that's a great idea so i'm very and so uh what i would say to that is the multiple buildings uh actually all five of our buildings are doing different things to get feedback from staff and their their community some are doing surveys some are doing focus groups um you know and there's multiple ways to
gather that information uh what i typically do is i have uh monthly meetings individually with the principals but we also have a monthly meeting where the five of them are meet with me so what we would typically do around that information is share that out either individually and or in the group in terms of themes some are specific to the buildings so that would be related related right to those conversations with the individual principal and some are more thematic based across the district and certainly we would use that information towards the budget development process because some of that will be resources and some of it would just be other areas that we need to focus on but i can certainly inform the board of the general themes around each of those and and like i
said every building is doing it a little bit differently and it's great because we're trying to get more information that we can then use to better you know teach our kids so it's really important thank you okay any other comments thank you looks like we've completed campus news so now we have 7b review the 2022-23 draft budget derek hey could i say can i say something first real quick very quickly though i don't want to steal your thunder mr veliz uh this is the first presentation for the 2223 budget development process so we're pretty excited and as you know this will go through the spring as well i want to highlight three positives about the budget moving forward because we have had a lot of conversations about the financial picture of victor central school district
but um and and and obviously today this evening derek's going to talk specifically about the general themes of the budget what we focus on uh and also get into some specifics around the covet relief funding so everyone understands how we're using that uh one-time revenue money but the three positives to me are two years ago this community came together and made a decision to exceed the tax cap with a 60 positive majority vote and that made a huge impact uh on our revenue and really helped rectify some things that were missing in terms of a financial stability so i can't thank the board of education or the community enough for that vote in 2020 it was a collective effort and leadership not just from the board but from the community itself and without that we
would be in significant trouble right now the second thing that is very positive is last year thanks to the advocacy of this board and board members before these board members and advocacy from boards all across the state we were able to secure a significant increase in state aid that was really promised victor central school district for many many years that we went without and we're not exactly where we need to be there but we've made huge progress significant progress around the state aid revenue piece and so the combination of the state aid and the exceeding the cap two years ago has really gone a long way in rectifying our revenue we're not and you know obviously home free we still have to be very diligent around that but those are two major major accomplishments and
the last is what we talked about just a little bit earlier is the development of the strategic plan to really help hone us as a district on what we value in terms of an education in victor central school district which will then focus our money and resources in those areas in a much more targeted way than we can right now and so the combination of knowing what we want to spend the resources on and how to utilize those resources and the additional revenues through state aid and the tax base has put us in a very favorable spot there are many challenges ahead uh you'll hear about those uh through the next few months but i just want to make sure people understand that uh with the collective effort of this community we are in a
much stronger financial state than we were a couple years ago so thanks to the board for that and the community and i'm going to turn it over to derek who's going to go with the opening budget presentation yep thank you dr taranopa uh is this for this presentation okay great so uh thank you all for having me here i'm derek vallis this is superintendent for business uh this is just an introductory budget presentation as dr terranova shared and also just an update on the cove relief so first thing for tonight's discussion we're going to go over as we always do with the budget development as the goals of the budget a budget philosophy components of a budget the idea of a balanced budget and then i will give you an update of where we are
today where we are in the budget development process our next steps and then that covert relief update so just like last year you guys saw many of these these are very strong goals of a budget to so we've continued these goals into this budget development to maintain that comprehensive education that our vcs district community expects we would like to stabilize reserves and develop a consistent budgetary practice maximize efficiencies in the spending maximize the ability to generate aid for the futures while being transparent to the community on how we are using these funds so when you get build a budget especially when for myself i'm new to the district you got to think about what do you want our programs to look like for our students in this community a lot of this is going to
be achieved thanks to the work of the community the board of education dr taranova our staff and through the strategic planning process so once we get this idea of where we want to go my goals our initiatives for the the upcoming school year we got to look at the costs i mean you got to consider everything from personnel non-personnel transportation and whether or not we have space within our buildings because that will incur future costs if we don't have that once you figure out what the idea is we have to look at what our revenues are there's two main sources of revenues for us and that would be our state aid and our tax levy and then as we compare those revenues we have to we have to go and strive to maintain financial stability
so what do i mean when i'm talking about financial stability when i first got into budgeting uh this was the analogy that was given to me to help me better understand the budget and this is called the three-legged stool analogy so when you have a budget you have revenues expenditures and then we we use savings and when we talk about savings we're talking about unappropriated fund balances our reserves so in order for this stool to stay level we need all three legs of the stool so now we get into the stability in the in this little teeter-totter things so when you have your revenues and your expenditures balanced we stay kind of even and then we have our savings in our home we can protect our savings we can protect our home when you happen
to exceed your revenues with expenditures it starts to flip and that house of savings and fund balance slowly starts to diminish so what happens when our savings and so when our revenues and expenditures don't match we have to steal from the savings and put it into the revenues and now we have a balanced budget but what is the trouble when we start taking away from the savings and fund balance we start to develop a two-legged stool so as we go through this budget development processes i like to always keep going back to this three-legged stool and the idea that we have to kind of keep a balanced budget because in the long term as we deplete our our savings and our fund balance we'll get into a difficult situation where we're only on a two-legged
stool and that's not a good situation for us to be in so as we're building the budget i'm going to be continuously going back to a two-legged stool or the three-legged stool analogy so i just want to give you guys that quick analogy is there any questions on that part what is the percentage that we usually keep in reserves is it three to five percent in our budget the contingency so our goal for this budget development is we would like to still maintain that three and a half and four to three and a half to four and a half percent contingency fund which if we don't go using it throughout the year that would go to fund our reserves in the future if something happens in the middle of the year we also have that
as a fall back in the fall safe for the district where we don't have to do an emergency use of savings so again the goal of our budget is to keep our revenues and expenditures level while maintaining our home our savings our fund balance so just an update so currently i have developed uh budget worksheets and they have been pushed out into the buildings the principals have them uh and we have started to do some department levels so in addition to the buildings we have pps we have special education so those budgets are out there in the administrator's hands with the conversations i have happening meetings are happening planning is happening so that's part of our budget so that's the non-personnel side the goals for that the timeline for that that's happening now ideally by
middle of january i'll be able to provide an update for you on our non-personnel items come right now for the personnel side the personnel discussions are happening within the buildings and eventually mrs d'angelo and hopefully myself time permitting will start meeting with department chairs building administration and start looking at what type of staffing we need for our programs look at our student enrollment look at grade levels cohort survival model and figure out what type of staff we need to maintain our program or as we're building programs what type of staffing we need for that so that time like oh sorry go ahead um with your enrollment project projections is that one year out or do you have like a couple years out of what your projections are i do my projections currently out seven years
but further out you get the less reliable they are so we really hone in like the three to five year range but i have models that go out for about seven or eight years and then um development within farmington and victory like current houses being built is that factored into the enrollment at all or is that not really are you talking about the savings the house model no no no um like enroll like student enrollment oh yeah is with new builds going in i mean my neighborhood is just exploding with new houses going up is does that factor into enrollment projection or is that not really accurate okay so one of the when they do an enrollment projections they actually look at live birth rates and that helps in projections um and obviously growth within
the community is a big factor that will come up in a later discussion of revenues because the state actually gives us a number on growth on that as well but yes we take all the considerations we we actually use forecast five analytics who is a great software who helps us with our enrollment projections and for the most part outside of pre-k kindergarten with the cohort survival model we kind of know what the the number of kids are going to eat be in each grade level uh with high school they're going to start putting out the course offerings and then we can start deciding within those those core the the specific uh courses that we offer and then it gets a little tricky in the in the pre-k kindergarten but the good news is with this
new upk grant future years our kindergarten numbers are going to be a little bit easier to project because they're going to now be identified to the district so that's good news for us thank you yep next steps so at our january 13th board meeting we are going to i'm going to give you an update from the buildings and departments on our our non-personnel items these are our supplies material contractual and equipment january 17th we're going to start getting a better idea hopefully that's going to be a budget workshop by the way that we'll start get a better idea of state aid projections hopefully the state will issue their initial budget by then and then we're going to have a little bit of discussion of tax cap scenarios we're starting to get a better idea the
tax growth factor has been issued by the state of new york cpi is determined at this point so then we'll get a little deeper dive into different type of tax cap scenarios where we would like to go in the tax levy on the february 10th board meeting we'll give you a preliminary update of our personnel most of us roll over new programs that we're looking to add and what is going to look at for expense wise on personnel items and then in february 17th we had we'll give you a budget update and at that time we would like to get a preliminary tax cap submission so on march 1st i have to submit a preliminary they don't hold our feet to the fire on this but start giving the state an idea where we're going
on our tax cap so that is the next two months of the budget development process just to let you know that january 17th date is the 27th oh sorry make sure you show up i will be there sorry about that it's not pivotal oh i took the february 17th day so i apologize for that immediate calendar yeah so is it update for our stimulus funds carissa it's a little over 3.6 million dollars and this goes back to our budget goals so a little bit of strategy and planning went into this one what we did is we took what's already in the general fund budget for salaries and benefits and we moved them in to the grant and the purpose of doing that was i freed up money in the general fund and we're actually using
the money that was originally assigned to salaries and benefits for these teachers to start purchasing chromebooks and devices for our one-to-one initiative that we're starting to roll out the reason for doing this little shell game is when you purchase uh technology through boces and you use the federal fund or stimulus grant which is under the federal fund you do not receive boces aid but if i do it out of the general fund it will produce boces aid and we have a reimbursement of about 65 percent so essentially we're using the stimulus money to buy chromebooks but we're doing it in a way to maximize future revenues so with the one to one we're gonna start purchasing more devices as in part of the refresh model so we're gonna use the seamless money to kind of
offset the additional devices through bocesade to make it more sustainable so this is a little bit of a shell game but it was a way to increase future revenues and then in addition to that we pulled out fourteen hundred fourteen thousand dollars which is pre-kk 12 for kobe related supplies uh as needed uh such as like band flutes and ppe and such things like that if anything were to come up and they were to need it we would have funds available to them so that was how we use the carissa funds there yes so the carissa funds of the 3.6 million how much is it says the majority used i'm assuming that social emotional health oh yes yes okay how much is how's that spread these are funds that go over spread over a couple
of years correct so is that just spread out over three years the three six uh this one i believe we targeted it all this year to free it up because with supply chains issues we're actually doing two years of purchases so we're trying to purchase chromebooks to be delivered by july over the summer so then we can re-image them and get them deployed by september 1. so we front loaded a lot of these tech purchases due to the supply chain issue so a lot of this 3.6 is occurring this year okay and we have in the majority set of the three sixes salaries and benefits yep okay yep okay thank you gears two of the smaller amount is 476 thousand dollars uh what i did with this one i again went along with the social
emotional health very similar to the carissa funds i put uh social workers and psychologists in here and we're doing the same thing that we're doing with the carissa and we're just being creative with this one so with that i pulled out salaries out of the general fund we put them in the grant and then the same idea with the chromebooks but we're buying flat panel displays to go in the classroom a lot of them are starting to get deployed as they're coming in so and again the idea was to make these technologies purchases generate boces aid to soften the blow on the tax levy in the future years and make a more sustainable model so we did that with the gears money as well arp we got a little bit more into what people would
have expected with the funds so we did additional support for quarantine teachers and students so that included additional substitute salaries teacher assistance as needed we added a nurse and some clerical into the nurse's office due to contact tracing the the testing requirement for unvaccinated employees we allocated additional funds for supervision in the cafeteria because at a certain point we didn't know what that was going to look like additional day cleaners so this was what we had last year through csea we offered transportation staff that were between their morning run and the afternoon run to come in and start sanitizing highly touched areas so we put money aside from the the stimulus funds to cover those expenses working with our new k-12 directors we added additional professional development hours for for teachers to possibly learn more
of a technology-based focus instruction and pd supplies for any special needs students who was quarantined uh mrs mendel wanted about 200 000 over the two years to if a student was quarantined we can contract with a service who provides related services so if a special a special needs student was quarantined we'd be still be able to provide related services to them and as mr g shared we have put junior high after after school homework help this is five teachers two hours a day every wednesday and then the next one is for the summer enrichment but we went above and beyond our what our requirement was for the summer enrichment so i also included 270 thousand dollars to be able to do the summer enrichment again next year was a very successful program it will it
proved to be beneficial to our students so we're using this to fund the rest of this year because we again we went over an additional summer enrichment opportunities like summer academy for next year after the last summer in richmond run by the same teachers same types of programming i budgeted a comparable dollar amounts how that program looks is up to the administrators of the program the teachers and everything i just put money aside how they want that program to look is up to them i have a question can you go back sure so the related services for quarantine special ed students yes you're saying we're paying a source outside of the district the goal was to to do a source i mean we can always do an amendment if it ends up being somebody in
in district but it was more of like because our caseload of our related services employees to be able to do a remote instruction uh for these services wasn't ideal in mrs mendel's mind so this was a basically a service a contracted service to provide these services yes have they tried the using the teachers i mean they at least try to see and it didn't work so that's why we went this option or uh i believe so i would have to check with mrs gomendal and so what are the relayed services like speech otp speech counseling yep and we signed a contract with several agencies i take it it was really it wasn't assigned to a specific agency it was just a blanket amount we reserved money for that support potentially if we needed to contract
out with outside providers because of the challenges of trying to do remote remote instruction what i can do is give i have to i want to do an update to see specifically how we're utilizing that who we've contracted out with and if if that has occurred we don't know if we've actually used i don't know off the top of my head if we have it now but that's something i can check into would yeah or no i think this is more around if we have a student who's quarantined for example who who needs otp or speech and language typically we would try to provide that with in-house with our existing staff but if the challenges are too great in terms of you know they're trying to support the kids that are in school and the
time frame is not applicable to that then the idea was that this was going to support some outside services to come in and provide that support if available but i'd like to i need to actually look into that and see if we've been able to do that because it is it was a great idea to do this because we were thinking outside the box based upon last year's issues with the hybrid model and some kids being virtual so um the plan is it's a way to to get the outside services either via zoom or in person most likely if it's quarantined it'd be through zoom at a higher rate if we can't find the people within our building to do it because of their responsibilities i mean they normally have time blocked to service them
anyways right so you're saying if it was a one-on-one service or if they had a group of kids that obviously oh what i don't know if this is for derek or dr terranova the first of the could we get an update what the 270 000 will translate into or i know that isn't your forte yeah i do have a breakdown yeah that'd be yeah in terms of the junior again this is the money we're allocating for this coming summer and so that has got to be still planned we we had some successes this past summer hasn't been identified proven that's not going to be planned out until we're not there to march because we want to target what the needs are but we want to mimic you know our goal is with the with the
money that we have available to mimic the big picture from last summer because if you remember last summer i had three components we increased support for students with disabilities beyond the extended school year model we offered enrichment opportunities for kids at all different ages and we had the summer academies at a variety of buildings that was targeted support for kids who might be needing extra support at the elementary or secondary level so those three concepts enrichment summer academies and increased support for students with disabilities is not going away those are going to be the three major focus areas but the planning behind it and what it's going to look like still has to be done because we're going to take what we learned from this past summer and make sure we expand on that but
also some things that didn't quite go the way we wanted to we need to adjust so but it's still those three areas and that's why this money's so important and then we need to think about how are we going to budget for that after this is the trouble with there's a challenge of stimulus money is you know it goes away it's not extended revenue so how do we maintain those types of programs when the stimulus money is no longer there to do some of the good stuff which is part of the right the hope is that yeah the stimulus is coming during this period of time of extreme need so hopefully it won't be to that level it's when brian gee was talking about the junior high after school homework help that sounded like a
really positive thing that kids are taking advantage of one question is what about the high school is that something that could be expanded there and can it be more than absolutely just every wednesday so again this is right now uh mr ghee mr clearing we're we're piloting this program okay so with this being a two-year grant if it is successful we could always do an amendment to the stimulus and so there are some of this that we put in there and it's it may not get used completely such as these related services the additional date cleaners are it was budgeted and it's not used to the level so if it gets to that point and we find that the junior high after school homework program was successful i plan on submitting a uh an amendment
to that grant to possibly push funds down into there but right now mr thering and mr gee are piloting to see how successful that program would be okay thank you derek yes isn't the county um refunding us the addition the money for the additional nurse and clerical all right this is above and beyond this is more for like contact tracing in and nurses in the office so the nurses are just dealing with a lot of extra hours and stress and this wasn't a way to help lighten the burden on them and then there was i believe we have one of our nurses if i'm not mistaken down there helping with administering the the testing as well you asked i didn't hear the question karen are you talking about the grant money that this county got
from the state so yeah that's separate from this okay that's mon that's that's directly goes to ontario county who then supplies us with staff and materials to monitor and do the testing and the additional supervision in cafeteria is that district-wide or a certain building and are those like additional hires that we did so this was actually written over the summer so at the time we didn't quite know what what school lunch was going to look like was it going to be where they had to be spread out in different classrooms or if it was because of teacher sickness and quarantines that we we would be able to bring in additional help to help supervise the lunchroom and again that's one of the ones that when we built the stimulus grant we didn't know what it
was going to look like and now we're starting to get a better picture so that one a lot of that money will probably be remained unused to be redistributed into other buckets but at the time it was ideally like if we had the social distance in the cafeteria we had to be creative in spaces such as eating in the classroom so then we would have to have additional supervision to cover the classrooms to watch the kids so that was what those funds were for so derek if at the end at the end of this year we then to use your terminology you know the money might have to go to different buckets what would be the timing and maybe doctor turnover this is for you and derek jointly what would be the timing of an
update of the unused funds and where they are reappropriated probably is that going to tie in during the budget workshops or is that after that or probably afterwards because it's hard to tell right now with the numbers i would feel more comfortable like may or june as we're getting close to the end of the year talk about in june about where we will want to do it and then be ready to go come july august september okay and you also write to dr parks that we have to anticipate some of this during the budget process as well so derek's completely right we're not going to really know until the end of the year it's kind of like the surplus at the end of the year but as we build the budget we need to be
thinking about some of the stimulus money that may not be used and where we could potentially reappropriate it again with the concept of are we going to use it for sustainable expenses if so how sustainable is it or are we going to use it for more one-time expenses so we can give you we can definitely give an update during the budget process but then a final uh final information would be may and june thank you derek i i have one question also um so this operates like a grant you said yep it runs right through the the special aid fund which is the f code yes okay so then if you have to redistribute funds you would have to amend the grant and get some kind of approval yes the whole process has been a
approval process and that approval process probably takes some time uh yeah about 30 days yeah okay yeah thank you although they're a little behind this year but they've also had these additional ones so we'll see and then the last one is the arp 10 set-aside this funded pretty much 65 including everything that dr terranova spoke about but also the transportation transportation aspect of the summer programs and funded about 65 of this year and then probably that 270 because it was about 110 000 and then the other part of the 270 that i just spoke about before will finish up this year and for next year as well any other questions for the use of stimulus funds or budget development process currently or going forward questions looks like we're good thank you thank you so much
for your time tonight thank you thank you okay we're at 7c which is to reset rescind the following field trip senior class of 2022 to manhattan new york city 324 to 326 of 22. so i'll first entertain a motion to rescind this trip a motion by christian second by elizabeth any questions or clarification needed seeing none all in favor say aye aye aye any opposed extensions carried motion carried thank you item d then is to approve the following field trip senior class of 2022 to burlington massachusetts on those same dates 324 to 326 and then the indoor track and field athletes do staten island new york from 1 7 22 to 1 9 22. entertain a motion to approve these trips i'll look to my right this time christopher and trisha motion and second okay
any questions or comments on these two seeing none all in favor say aye aye aye and opposed extensions motion carried thank you okay we are at 7e policy review the first reading of the following policies public participation at board meetings policy and board meeting procedures policy 2350 these two policies are connected um because one is the our agenda basically and the other is a specific part of that agenda and my thanks to the committee for the hard work they put into updating offering suggestions for updates to this policy and we're calling it elizabeth's committee what i think is chris eckert's committee i want to second the uh the work of that committee um in the first read uh some very good suggestions um and in light of some of the things that have come up
in the past that we've never had to experience i think it's going to make for a much more equitable clear for our community of how we engage or receive information live from our community and even though we are live streaming it we still encourage the community to come in and participate if you have something public and this is a very nice guideline so thank you again well thank you for those comments are there any other comments or suggestions or questions regarding these two um without getting into the wii and i'm and i'm just reading again so i left my notes was there a conversation about public participation being of community members who hold a stake in residency was that is that something we we had some conversations around that and elizabeth correct me if i'm
wrong but we are of the opinion that anyone who shows up to a board meeting is allowed to speak so you know legal advice is not to put that kind of a restriction on it so yeah anyway i think we talked at the meeting about um or at the subcommittee rather that if there was someone like a stakeholder with the district like there wasn't a residency requirement necessarily because of the staff member who lives out of district we would want them to still feel welcome or someone who has um you know a vested interest in the work of the district even if they didn't have a residency requirement i like that term stakeholder i think that's great thank you elizabeth any other comments okay so we finished the first read they'll come up one more
time for approval meeting reports item 8 monroe county school boards association committee reports anyone i've got a couple here um information exchange committee of november 10th it was really uh a description of a of a program called civic readiness that was piloted in a couple of different districts and the holly central school district for instance chose to require students to complete a research project that could include aspects of a high school civic project and then would expect students to also engage in extracurricular work based learning experiences which many of them were already doing and the substantial difference now would be the reflective pieces of their work in some form of a presentation so these are programs where students actually earn credit under civic knowledge and civic participation kind of a interesting presentation okay and then
also dr terranova and i went to the executive committee meeting on december 1st and the agenda included the update on the organization's move i don't know if you've seen the new monroe county school board association new scope but it has pictures of their new digs i guess their challenge was trying to get phones installed but it seems like you know they were actually running out into the parking lot and flagging down phone trucks to try and get help they also talked about um the act for education coac and sit and those stand for act for education was presented by the regional committee the let's see what was the other one coc coac is the community outreach advisory committee that gave an update on their progress and sit was the system integration project talking about rotating
off the implementation support team for this in january after a two-year rotation she also reported that they've been working on many things even though there was a summer pause and the project will really start moving to get fully back on target so those were updates and we are still they're still trying to find the new executive director and they also have announced let me make sure i get the name right pickering took over for uh program director is now nancy pickering who is formerly from uh hilton on their board she's taking over for becky for becky okay that's all i have for this evening any standing committee updates doesn't look like it not hearing any flip the page and public participation we still have none right so item 10 upcoming events the next regular board
meeting thursday january 13 2022 can you imagine that clicked off another year all right uh jingle bells everyone happy new year if i don't see you item 11 motion to adjourn motion to adjourn by christopher's second by karen all in favor say aye i've always wanted to do this [Music] ocean adjourned thank you meeting you
