I'd like to call the Lancaster Central School District Board of Education meeting to order. In the unlikely event of an emergency, if we have to evacuate the room, please note the locations of the exits. At this time, I ask that you silence your cell phones and rise for the pledge of allegiance. Please remain standing for a moment of silence of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, liberty and justice for all. Thank you. >> Okay, welcome everybody to this meeting tonight. Um, before we get started, I would just like to uh quickly excuse Miss Siobhan. We're going to move on to presentations 4.0. 4.1 we have our K12 district art show presentation. Before we call up our artists, we have a few things that we would like to celebrate cuz the art department has experienced a lot of growth. We've been really working hard and we thought we would showcase some of the things that we've been doing at our schools. I like. All right. So, in our elementary buildings, uh, Mrs. Tamsul Pello had an article published for the NISA. That's our New York State Art Teachers Association. 004for the new greenhouse. that's being built in our courtyard. Um, all of our eighth grade students participated in lessons about emotions and color with our counseling center. And select middle school art students attended a field trip as mentors with our self-contained class to the Buffalo AKG. Um, our secondary teachers have been working. So, jewelry class ran for the first time in a decade, which is great. Um, our gallery internship held the first ever studio and art exhibition as well as the digital art exhibition. And all of our families, you guys are welcome to come to have ice cream after we give out awards. And you can see the digital art exhibition is still up as well along with the K through 12. Um, Mrs. Dempky's art honor students are creating a legendary mural in Mr.
Moore's class. graphic design created brochures and posters for unified basketball and they also took over the newsletter. This is fancy. Are you ready? Um, Miss Carly's portfolio classes participated in their first ever portfolio education at the high school, featuring feedback and evaluations from 11 local artists and educators representing organizations such as the AKG Art Museum, Boseies, and Demon. Um, Mrs. Carly's kids are also creating a mural with Mr. Moer's Life Skills Kids for their garden. AVPA had another successful art festival showcasing work from all grade levels. Um and the art department paired up with the sea gallery for a mobile dark room which will run a workshop at our festival as well. And then there's wait there's more. Um collectively the art department has over 25 pieces of student work featured in the Earing Boseis
art showcase this year which only featured 100 artworks. So it's pretty awesome. Um, some of our students won awards. One piece of artwork will be at Alman on display forever. Some will be featured in their Boseis mini art gallery and some of them were chosen to be featured in the Boseies um, offices. So, lots of awards were given out. CONGRATULATIONS. 009much. We hope you have a wonderful summer. HEAT. HEAT. HEAT. HEAT. As everyone is kind of shuffling out for the art program, um I just want to say this is always one of my favorite board meetings of the year just because it's so much fun to see all the stuff that the kids are doing. They're also very talented. Um, and again, tonight it's going to be a lot of fun to appoint another art teacher to the staff. So, very excited about it. Our our program is incredible, and the students really show off all their talent. So, I love it. They did steal the ice cream joke, though, which is fun. All right. Next up, we have another fun presentation. 4.2. We would like to call up uh Mr. the director of athletics and the coaches
of our state champion show. So, uh, I'll do my best and thank you for that. Um, so good evening everybody. I just wanted to take a moment and recognize and celebrate our incredible spring athletes and coaches. We had a historically successful season. And I want to start where our students excelled first and foremost in the classroom. This spring, every single one of our varsity teams achieved a team GPA of over 90%. What makes this even more remarkable is that this isn't just a one-time achievement. This marks four consecutive years that all of our varsity teams have accomplished this amazing feat. The students here at Lancaster define what it means to be true student athletes. I would like to extend a big thank you to all of our students and our teachers for their hard work
and dedication. Across the board, all of our spring teams competed at an incredibly high level this season, representing our school and our community with class, grit, and sportsmanship. Two programs in particular had truly historic seasons. First, I would like to congratulate the outdoor track and field team. This spring, 17 athletes qualified for the state championship meet. To put that into perspective, our school had the most representation of any school in all of Western New York. A few individual standouts from the state meet include Noah Ok, who took fifth place in the state for the boys 800 meter run. Carson Zula placed sixth in the state for the boys 3200 meter run. And freshman Charlotte placed sixth in the state for the girls class A 3000 meter. The future is incredibly bright for this program. And
I also want to recognize our incredible coaching staff, Rich Kuka, Brad Mandell, who is alumni, class of 2016, and the rest of the staff work as hard as anybody in Western New York to elevate these athletes every single day. Congratulations, tracking fans. Next, I would like to congratulate Coach Wattowski and our varsity softball team. It is incredibly difficult to win a state championship, but to do it in back-to-back years is a monumental rare achievement that secures this team's place in our school's history. This season brought a very unique situation. Essentially, our entire roster returned from last year's championship team. While that sounds like a luxury, it actually brings an immense amount of pressure and sky-high expectations. Every team gave us their best shot early in the season and we faced some real adversity, dropping a
couple of tough games in extra innings. But looking back on that, the adversity was exactly what this team needed. It taught them lessons that proved to be beneficial when the stakes were the highest. Just look at their playoff run. In a far west regional game, we found ourselves down one- nothing in the bottom of the sixth. The pressure is on. Win or go home. That's when Alyssa's runner launched a massive game-changing home run. And pitcher Maddie Matthews was a rock, earning the win by pitching all seven innings with eight strikeouts. In the state semi-final game, the girls had to endure a 2-hour rain and lightning delay. But instead of losing the momentum during the delay, they erupted. They came back out and scored 12 runs in a sixth inning to secure a dominant 17-2 win
over Saratoga Springs. Then then there was a state championship game. This was an absolute ESPN instant classic. It was a game of pure heart, execution, and nerves of steel where our girls prevailed in 12 innings to bring the state championship back to Lancaster. My cell phone almost died as I was sending updates to everybody back home and they were anxiously waiting my text. But if you ask me what I admire most about these girls, it isn't the trophy or the rings. It's the fact that they define what it means to be a team. They are an incredibly close-knit group. If you ever want to see pure joy, you need to attend one of their games. Every single batter has their own custom team chant, which is shouted by their teammates. Some are better than others,
but no matter the circumstance, no matter the score, these girls supported each other through thick and thin. They are the definition of a complete team. They boast two absolute stunt pitchers where most teams struggle to find one. They play flawless lock down defense all over the diamond. They get vital contributions from everybody in the lineup, including underassmen, as evidenced by sophomore Abby Demino's unforgettable walk-off win to win a state champion walk-off hit to win a state championship. Finally, the heart of this team was anchored by seven incredible seniors who provided steady veteran leadership all season long. Emma, Alyssa, Payton, Brena, Brianna, Bella, and Ava, thank you for everything you poured into this program. We are all so proud of you, and you will be deeply missed. To all our spring athletes, coaches, and parents who
supported them, thank you for making our community so proud. board members, teachers, and administrators, thank you for your continued support of our athletic and academic programs that make moments like this possible. And congratulations to all of our athletes. And congratulations to our back-to-back New York State softball champions. Now, I'd like to introduce the coaching staff. Coach Rich Winnowski and Stephanie Young. Thank you so much, coach. Um, before I start and introduce my team, I'd like to send out a couple thank you. First, I'd like to thank the board for recognizing our achievements this year. It means a lot to the girls and to myself. And also, I'd like to thank LCTA uh for their continued support of athletics. So typically what happens when this team goes to states, you're fortunate enough to make state championships.
They often step up and uh really generous donations. So thank you LCTA as well. So ladies, if I could come on up and remain standing till the rest of the team gets up here, please. Our first uh player is senior. Elizabeth, senior pageant was unable to attend this evening. Senior brand Senior Briana Dejako was able to attend this evening. Senior Deino, excuse me, senior, Junior Lead. She sophomore Lily Gazar. Sophomore Manny Matthews, junior, and assistant coach Stephanie Young. Nothing has been ready. Heat up here. So, for those of you who were here at the meeting where we awarded them for their first championship last year, uh I was basically told kind of like uh Mr. Rob said that they were going to bring back the entire team and I was told that there's a very
good chance of repeating uh essentially I was promised it. So I'm super happy to say congratulations again backto back champs. It is a huge accomplishment and for those of you who are moving on and graduating um written in the history books forever here at Lancaster. So, it's a huge accomplishment and it can't be done without the hard work that we know you guys put in. And on the back end, continuing to have excellent grades. Super important. So, thank you guys for your hard work. Congratulations again. You deserve it. Congrats. If you would like to, well, I'll let Dr. Google say to work with him once he's done. I will uh let you guys graciously exit if you unless you want to stay for the rest of the meeting. >> I just want to say how
very exciting it is and the magnitude I'll talk about that you saw the standing ovation that you got and and I don't know if you'll you'll recognize and realize in this moment but certainly unprecedented to win one state championship let alone back to back. So that's uh that's fantastic. end of the calendar year. I think we started our our board meetings in September honoring you and you're going to end our our uh season of board meetings with honoring you. So, that's quite quite special. As Coach Rup did say, he was updating a few of us uh back home with how things were progressing and tied up top of the sixth, top of the seventh, and there was back and forth going on. At one point, I think uh we had a pretty advantageous situation. I
don't know if it was the ninth in hitting, bottom of the ninth or whatever it might have been. So, I think I had said leave legacy time, right? And then I stopped texting because I got a little superstitious. I think maybe if I stop texting, they'll finish this thing and end it. Um, and then about 30 minutes later, I got the text that you guys had won on a walk-off, which is just unbelievable way to end the season. Uh, to highlight the magnitude, this past weekend, I was at Mr. Wild's retirement party, okay? And I met an individual there for the first time. And within the first minute and a half of meeting this individual, one of the things that he mentioned to me was that he was a state champion uh 40 plus years
ago. That was one of the things that he he knew I had a connection to basketball and that was in where the state championship was in, but that was one of the things in the first minute and a half. I know we have a lot of coaches out here, athletes, former athletes. The magnitude of what you have done will sink in at some point, but it's something that you group of young ladies and this team will have for the rest of your life that that bonds you together that you can always be proud of and you 100% have left a legacy. So, congratulations once again. I know that some of your family is here and I just want to remind them that you're never told to go and you guys are in. So if you
guys want to stay for the rest of the meeting, you're more than welcome to. Um if not, I will give you the option to gracefully exit at this point. I won't be offended either way. So congratulations again. All right, moving on to 5.0 correspondence. 5.1, we had an email received from Karen Durkin on June 5th, 2026. 6.0, Approval of minutes. 6.1. Can I have a motion to approve the regular session from June 8th, 2026? >> Any comments or questions? >> All those in favor? >> Anyone against? Motion carries. 7.0. We have items from staff organizations. Is there anybody from the Lancaster Administrative and Supervisory Association? >> Thank you, Mr. Mayor. Anybody from the Lancaster Central Teacher Association? Right. >> Good evening. Congratulations to all of our artists and our athletes. They're all having ice cream
right now, but we do congratulate them. Um, as another successful school year winds down, the LCTA would like to provide just a brief year-end overview. First, as a service organization, one of our most important goals is to support our students and community in ways that extend beyond the classroom. Through donations from our members, totaling nearly $10,000, we were able to provide funding to multiple organizations, clubs, and community programs. We donated approximately $1,000 to sports teams such as the Lancaster football team, Lancaster Ponytails, Lancaster Dew Baseball, and LHS flag football. We provided dinner at states totaling $750 to girls soccer, volleyball, and softball teams. It's probably why they won. It was at dinner. We gave $1,000 for building level activities such as CKSO antlers, block L birthday bags for the Trinity food pantry, lap graduation, LMS
and LHS musicals, and 8ighth grade uh class activity day. We were able to help multiplemies such as LHS leadership cooking marathon healthcare academy donation to city mission western York foster closet from the healthcare academy Lancaster youth bureau Christmas and Easter drive and we also donated nearly $4,000 to for community outreach program including programs including boys and girls club dinner Lancaster youth foundation rotary club hockey nope rotary club holiday decoration ations and we sponsored a Sunday at the Lancaster Library. In addition to the $10,000, individual buildings collect donations and participate in numerous charitable efforts, including the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, the American Heart Association collection, purchasing hospice bouquets, planting flowers in the village, and creating gift baskets by our CARES team that support students and families experiencing hardships and tragedy. These efforts reflect the
compassion and commitment of our members and they are something we are truly proud of as an organization. Second, we would like to congratulate all of our LCTA members who are retiring this year. We thank you for your years of dedication, service, and commitment to our students, and we wish you all the best as you begin this new chapter in your lives. Finally, while we are disappointed that we are unable to reach a contract agreement before the end of the academic year, we remain committed to continued discussions and look forward to working toward a fair and equitable agreement that reflects the dedication, professionalism, and hard work our members demonstrate day after day and year after year. We wish everyone a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable summer, and we'll see you in September. Thank you, Mr. and another
excellent year. Appreciate the effort that all the teachers put in and uh I hope you guys have a good summer as well. Uh, is there anybody here from the Lancaster Association of Service Personnel? >> Thank you. Anybody here for uh from the Lancaster Association of Substitute Teachers? All right. Uh, moving on to 8.0 board reports. Uh, 8.1, we have uh the review of the 2025 2026 district. I just wanted to read a quick aside on that. So the initial goal along with a reflection on the progress made towards the goal attainment will be posted on the district website by tomorrow for review of the community. Okay. So, um, continuing on with board reports, tonight is a, uh, special night, bittersweet night. There's been a lot of celebration. There's been a lot of great things that
we've talked about. Um, but there's a couple things I wanted to go over. There are two members of this board who are actually participating in the last meeting. Um, so our first one is Miss Michaela Hz who was our first ever exeicial board member and she did an excellent job. She was here all year providing insight into students, insight into what was going on from perspective of a student. Um, and I for one will say you did an amazing job. So I'd like to congratulate you again. You're the first one that's ever done this. you spoke uh so incredibly well all year and we couldn't have uh couldn't have done it without you. You really did the the mission of what this was supposed to be proud. So congratulations and uh congratulations on what you
did for us and we're looking forward to seeing what you do in the future. I'll chime in as well. I'll just say over the past two years, it's been a joy and a pleasure to get to know Michaela um at SSAC first and then which is superintendent student advisory council and then as an offshoot of that and in collaboration with that as uh as Mr. Kelly said our first exeicio student board member. Um I will say that you know we would prepare before the board meetings to make sure that she was comfortable. She always was well before we got together. um she always did a fantastic job of representing the entire student body K through 12, which is what she was tasked with doing in a very thoughtful uh manner. And Mr. Telico said it's
a great public speaker. She does a wonderful job. After one of the first board meetings, I remember kind of asking, you know, come to you and say, "Wonderful job, Michaela." And I think her response was something the effect of how nervous she was and certainly never could tell or notice that. um wish you the best of luck as you are heading Niagara next year. Correct. Uh for education, you will undoubtedly make a wonderful educator someday as I'd like to to watch you up close and personal. Wish you nothing but the best of luck. And I will say little shout out to Miss and Miss Jen. Um really cool to see your mom along on this journey with you in the front row uh today literally for parts of it. So uh congratulations. Thank you for
everything and good luck. And next, um, I'd like to say a couple words about Mr. Mike's age. So, today is Mike's last board meeting. Um, so I'd like to say that you they say you should never beat your heroes. Mike Bettney, May not of 2019. And um it's a little bit of a joke, but um Mike has been instrumental in helping me along uh the last seven years that I've been on the school board. So Mike has served this board for 13 years, right? >> 12. Okay, good enough. Uh feels like Baker's. Um Mike's done a wonderful job serving as president. um helping me in my first year as board president. He's always been a a steady person, a steady hand on on the gavvel, there to remind me of what our real mission is.
He was one of the first people that I met when I joined the school board who helped me along. So, I want to say Mike, I I've really appreciated your advice over the years. I appreciate your friendship. I've appreciated um all the words of wisdom that you've shared with us. You will be sorely missed. And um again, it it's not easy to be a board member sometimes, especially in difficult situations and difficult times. Um you've obviously dealt with quite a few of them over the years. Um and you've handled them with nothing but uh grace and um just stoicism. So, thank you very much for all your work. Appreciate you very much. We have a little gift for you as well. time in as well. I'm going to put the readers on for this to
make sure I capture everything. As Mr. Telico said, about a dozen years of service to Lancaster, which is an absolutely amazing run. However, I'll say that it started well before the PTO parent coming to board meetings, supporting the district, going to games while before and while a a board member, tweeting things out, just supporting every facet of Lancaster. And I would say, Mr. Sage, you've always led with integrity, thoughtfulness, kindness, and compassion. Um, I've been around Lancaster for quite some time, some quite some time, and you care about Lancaster, the students, the teachers, the administrators, the community as a whole as much as anyone I've ever known. Um, your perspective is always appreciated and you have a your heart for people is absolutely unparalleled. Um, I I just am so thankful and appreciative that I
had a front row seat to seeing your leadership and then working alongside you. Um, so thank you for your many years of service to our school district. Thank you for your leadership. Thank you for your friendship. I'll say congratulations. Enjoy life after the board of education. Enjoy your family. And as uh as I like to say, you have undoubtedly left your legacy. And uh maybe there are some nice students in the hallway over there, too. All right. I think it's only appropriate I say a few things considering when I first decided to run as a board member. Mike basically had to convince me uh to run because I was unsure of what I wanted to do. And just everything he kind of talked about and spoke about, you know, in my opinion came true. You
know, he's he's a great person to get to know. And I just think you look at the reason why I came to Lancaster, you think about the fact that you've been doing this for 12 years now. I'm the result of what you did. You know, you brought someone new to the district that wanted to come here and want to be part of it and you know, it good with you. We've done a great job and it's been great getting to know you and looking forward to uh seeing you on the other side. So, and then kind of on my other side here, I figured I'd look together Michaela, you know, congratulations and excited to see you next. And I was always jumping around with um uh John and Mike a little bit saying that I
I speak for a living and I think you might be a better public speaker than me. So I remember when I was your age I I don't think I could put two words together without saying h or yes. But just hearing you talk it's in my mind that's something you can it's difficult to teach. So in my mind it's a gift that you have and it's been great getting to know you and hearing you talk about all the stuff going on really in the loop and I'm you know at the younger generation still. So, I appreciate it and the best of luck at Niger. I just want to say a quick uh thank you to Mike as well. Just a couple quick just a real quick story when I was thinking about joining the board
as well. Um just like Tim, I was on the fence and um got Mike's phone number from a friend and called him and Mike didn't know who I was. I introduced myself and he not only answered the phone but stayed on the phone with me for well over an hour to talk all about the district. you could tell how passionate he was and he's a big reason that I'm sitting here today. So, thank you Mike for for everything you've done for me in my first year. Um, and Michaela as well, I just want to say done a fantastic job as well. Um, my oldest daughter is a rising junior and aspires to sit in your seat hopefully as a senior and um, I've told her multiple times if she wants to do it, she should
go back and watch the YouTube videos of how Michaela did it. So, um, just a fantastic job and you'll be missed. Okay, I have a couple things as well. Um, I do have a couple updates actually for just like school things first. Um, so uh, grab walk took place on June 10th. All of Lancaster graduates loved it. I've got a lot of um, great feedback on that. Um, all of the students got to visit their old teachers and students from William Street and their past elementary schools. Um, senior recognition night was also highly successful and we received a lot of positive feedback on that as well. Um, many seniors were recognized for their accomplishments through um, leadership academically and athletically. And then graduation of course is planned for this upcoming Wednesday and the seniors um,
all can't wait to celebrate all their accomplishments one more time together as a class. Um, as far as updates go, that is all I have. I do just have one more thing as well. Um I as this is my last board of education meeting um as the student exit this year board member, I just want to thank um every single one of you for making this experience so incredible for me. Um Dr. Kufel, thank you so much for always supporting me and pushing me to reach for my goals. U Mr. Telerico, thank you for always encouraging me to speak at each and every meeting. Uh Miss Payne Smith and Dr. Crazman, thank you for both sitting by my side every single day and um at each meeting, supporting me, making me laugh, and always giving
me the best advice. And lastly, to my mom, thank you for showing up to every single meeting. I wouldn't be the person I am today without you. I've been so honored to sit on the board of education for my senior year, and I truly couldn't have asked for a better group of people to do it with. The lessons I've learned, people I've met, and opportunities I've been given because of this amazing experience are ones I plan to take with me wherever I may go, both in college and my career. I truly am so thankful to have been able to represent the Lancaster student body, and I can't wait to see what the next year board member accomplishment accomplishes. I will always miss speaking at these monthly meetings, but I have no doubt in my mind
that the voice of the students will continue to be heard because of this amazing position. For one last time, that is all I have today. Thank you. just quickly jump. So, uh I you know a couple of people um you know mentioned um you know this isn't always easy but but I will tell you that it's usually easy. It's usually easy to to be a board member in Lancaster because we have uh the most amazing teachers. We have the most made amazing administration. Um we have the most amazing, you know, peer board members, right? So, yeah, there's a few things that are tough and you know, some decisions are tough, but it's a fun district to be a part of. you know, um you know, just all the sporting events, all the art, all the
music, everything that happens in Lancaster because of the hard work that uh all of you do, right? Um you know, I you know, want to thank all my my fellow board members over the the years and all the administrators that have been a part of this the entire time. Um but you know the hard work really gets done when you're when you're working with kids. You know uh it's easy for me to stand up here or sit here most of the time and you know make some you know moral decisions here and there and those are typically easy for me but you know educating kids is what this school district is about. So I want to thank every single employee um and all the the people in Lancaster because It was it was easy for
me because you all made it easy. Thank you. Thank you all. Um again, uh there's there's not much more to say. I appreciate you both so much and um you know, it'll be it's going to be different without you guys next year, but thank you so much. Uh, moving on to 9.0 superintendent administrative report. I'm going to turn it over to Dr. Kufel. I'll just briefly highlight a few of the uh the things that uh haven't been discussed yet, maybe one that has. Um, slow roll new tradition that started at William Street this year. Uh, fantastic tradition. Um, I know that Mr. Harris here, his administrative team, Officer Zimmerman's in the back, uh, and the PE teachers, but I'm not sure if any of them are here right now, but, uh, fantastic job organizing that
event. I think there's about 70 or 75 students who participated early uh uh last week one morning started the youth bureau and uh see at the bottom there and over 20 faculty um and faculty and staff participated to help organize uh make sure the fourth, fifth, sixth graders or they needed to get um make sure the book pads got to back to the school arranging the bikes back and forth making sure the students had breakfast. It was an unbelievable um example of what Lancaster is about and creating that student experience. So, it was a a really fantastic one. I got to to to ride along. Officer Zimmerman was kind enough to let me use one of his bikes. Um so, that was appreciated. But a a tradition that that started and I'm looking forward to
how that grows in the future. Um and so much hard work by so many people and a great vision. um flag day. Each of our K3s in William Street put together a unique and special uh event that shows off our students, our faculty, staff, administration's patriotism, the community's patriotism. Um each one does something different. I was able to get to all of them except uh except Hillier this year. Uh and my my first grader uh was a little disappointed, asked why I wasn't there, but I was able to get to all of all of them almost. and our students are on display in terms of singing at different grade levels. Uh chorus um you know the the what they're wearing um they celebrated our veterans some some calling out by name giving them a standing
ovation. So a beautiful beautiful day uh either on the the Friday before or the Monday after flag day. Uh and then lastly the grand walk miguel already mentioned this. That's just an example of legal legal legacy. one of our uh current um uh staff members, Ally Titman, uh started that as one of her projects in uh leadership and action with a few other students in 2018. It started pretty small with maybe two or three buses and now on average we have six or seven buses. Um what goes on that day leading up to that day um and then that day is just absolutely magnificent. Uh, I'm not sure who enjoyed that day the most. The seniors who are graduating to go back to their stomping grounds. Our youngest folks who look adoringly and with reverence
at our seniors or our teachers who will prepare by looking through old photos of when this class of 2026 was walking in their classrooms and hallways. Um, as our youngest students, they find their photos. Some of them uh have their their kindergarteners and first graders give them the photos. I know teachers have written letters um to their graduating seniors. It has just blossomed into this wonderful um celebration of the hard work that goes into a journey in Lancaster. So those are just a few of the highlights. I can go on and on and on, but uh you've heard enough from me this evening. So uh that's all I have. I'll turn back to you, Mr. President. >> Thank you, Dr. Approval 10.0 Old business. Does anybody have any old business to discuss? 11.0 new business.
