over here all right can I get a motion to come out of executive session at 6:36 I'll make a motion second Katie all in favor iOS 70 thank you all we're going to call to order the Tuesday November 12th regular meeting of the board of ed at 6:37 and we'll begin with the pledge please okay just some housekeeping please take note of the emergency exits on the side and behind you there's no smoking anywhere on school property rep planing to address the board there's a sign in sheet on the table and the meeting is being streamed on our uh District YouTube page uh we're going to begin with correspondence okay so the asbo next meeting is for the delegates meeting is virtual and it's on Wednesday December 4th at 7M that's all I have commendations
commendations some honorable mentions that I have valy Central High School College and Career affir was on Wednesday October Valley centr High School senior faculty te was on Wednesday October 16th the high school national French Honor Society induction was Thursday October 24th the high school's Shakespeare club presentation of A midsummer's Night's Dream was October 26 Julet oh it was Romeo and Juliet so sorry um Valley Central's National Spanish Honor Society induction was Wednesday November 6 and then the Valley Central High School National English Honor Society induction was Thursday November 7th that's it all right thank you very much all right next we'll move on to our student presentation we have our middle school students with us today welcome thank you from the principal of the middle school I just want to do a quick introduction um
when we had do our board presentation tell you these three teachers Miss Robinson Miss n and Mr Cummings uh our seventh grade teachers jumped on the opportunity to show fortive education um how they engage students in science all right one of the focal points this year is about student engagement of course it always is but primarily the areas we've talked about in our presentations and so the kids are here to show what they did with the bird be lab right I got it right say that five times fast it's really hard um so I'm going to go ahead and turn it over to our teacher for the presentation hello how are you sure okay so I'm Miss Robinson um once again this is n and Mr Cummings um our presentation is on student engagement in
science so just like Miss um baxer pointed out we have been focusing on student engagement throughout the whole school but science for us seems to make the most sense on how we can get the most um engagement because when we do science we learn science better so we are going to focus on on three priorities this year one is provide more opportunities for students to collaborate throughout their school day using handson student centered activities two use abstract science Concepts to elicit questioning and discussion and then three Foster a supportive environment for students to feel comfortable to discuss these abstract Concepts so one of the ways that we just finished doing this is in our natural selection lab which Mr Cummings is going to talk about everybody um so the natural selection standard is uh we
feel best learned through Hands-on Physical experiment not all standards are best learned that way but this one in particular was um since we were't able to study the effects of natural selection on evolution in a short period of time we did um we do have to kind of shorten into a period or two um no pun intended um but this was a great way for us to get the students engaged with about that and as you can see my assistance de assist are passing out um the actual lab materials that we use um and in addition to this we all also have um vering lab uh as a digital um lab uh Hands-On activity for uh students who maybe um are able to participate due to attendance or um other areas that they need um
so on your tray you should have um multiple different tools you'll have some uh beaks right now we use some household items we use a closeth pin a spoon and Chopsticks and then in that little um cup and everybody can do this now you can open up the lid off that cup and pour the contents just in the middle of the tray and yes those little rubber bands are um used brace rubber bands up on the floor so so as you're using your beaks U to try and pick up the food and simulate these Labs that the student stud um conducted we're going to have them explain to you a little bit about the lab and what they learn for so we are going to hear from a couple of our students about what they
learned what they enjoyed about it and I'm G to invite up Nadia to come and share with you I and this is Macy by the way and [Music] Josh beneficial traits due to the animal surviving and reproducing over time during the birdbeak lab I learned that the three different bird beaks all had different shapes and structures which which made them all be able to eat different foods easier than others during the bird beak lab I enjoyed the interaction of testing the different beak and how well they can eat the different foods provided and to see which one adapts best to the environment during the bird beak lab I enjoy trying to see which types of food would be best for different types of birds also enjoyed hearing about what others did like what beak they
used what foods were the best and how successful they were so as you can see um the handson approach is something where the kids can actually liit being a bir and trying see get the food off of the plate um sometimes we want to collect real world data sometimes we want to collect data that we can't do in the CL so that's where we use our gizmos and so we have and Emily who con the Gizmo and they're going to speak a little bit about that I learned a lot more about natural selection and how it is important to have the favorable tra in order to survive during the bir week lab I learned that there has to be special adaptations made to species for them to be able to survive in changing environment completing
a b Beek lab online was a way to get the exact information needed to learn about natural selection the lab Gizmo made it easy to see the way the Beak was increasing and decreasing size what I enjoyed about the bird beak lab was the fun activity on Explorer learning it helped me visualize the actual event of natural selection in its survival in survival the fittest I'm good opportunity for the kids to come around and assist the board members with maybe as wrapping up if you guys would mind growing up and helping the board members figure out what do with I lost it my keyboard I got a oh I got rice I got rice I got rice I got [Applause] one a kid you're just not good at it see [Laughter] so one two three
eyes on um so as we wrap up um we just wanted to uh pose the question to the board members which be they thought was the easiest to pick up f with chop yeah the chop so um inverted Clos Okay so um we talked about that so when we give the students the close pin the natural thing is to pick it up and use the spring but there were a lot of students that realize the other side is thinner and easier so you get you got a little help so just to wrap up um using Hands-On activities to study science not only makes abstract Concepts more tangible for students but provides opportunity to increase engagement and so that's what we are trying to do using the science curc just give the students more time and
more opportunities to talk to each other and work um with each other in science so thank you so much for your time we hope that you enjoyed being Birds a fantastic job there are ice cream CES waiting for you guys outside um and thank you so much yeah to eat it with your beak all right all right we are G to move on to our proposed consent agenda before we get begin we're going to pull co-curricular number 13 to do separately so can I get a motion to Pro approve the consent agenda less number 13 Fran second Diana all in favor oppos pass 70 uh motion to approve Cod number 13 Sarah second Angela all in favor I hos I passes 61 thank you next we're going to move on to reports and we have

sports the sports at Valley Central has thrived this season many teams have qualified for sections such as soccer and cross country and additionally our soccer team has um made it all the way to the Championships where they had went against Goan at walkill which had unfortunately ended their season but they had an amazing run as well as the girls swimming in diving team at on November 8th at 4 pm they had two girls actually ended up qualifying for States Elanor O'Neal and Riley Kinsley for diving and the swim and diving finals was on Saturday November 9th um for volleyball they had went to the semifinals against FDR which had concluded their season and the last varsity football game against Goan was on November 7th 20124 and they won 34-3 with the fall season ending um
the um yeah winter sports are going to begin starting November 18th and Elanor ornal is here so sorry I had to do it thank you all right thank you very much you're welcome to stay if you'd like or you can depart as well all right next we'll move on to the superintendent of schools so I had the pleasure of joining our board to go to the nisp conference and we learned a lot of different um information that we um will discuss and and and share among each other um to meet other boards and meet other superintendents and think about and learn about things that they're doing in other districts and for us to also share what we do on October 23rd and November 4th were two Walen mentors that was happy that I was to
attend and be able to have the opportunity to share Walden with our community members um I attended the Shakespeare production of of um Romeo and Juliet thank you Romeo J on October 26 and had the opportunity to speak to our students prior to the performance and they as always have done an outstanding job um in their performance um able to attend the Spanish Honor Society induction on November 6 where the guest speaker was one of our own new Spanish teachers in VC alumni that was able to say some inspirational words to our students and our um football game that happened on October 27th um I was happy to attend that game as well uh an important night that's coming up is our town hall on November 14th it starts at 6:30 if anyone is interested
in sharing their questions prior to the town hall they can email VC Communications bcsdny.org that is also on our website and you will be happy to share those questions um and the questions will be able to um we'll take questions up until the meeting up until 6:30 and I will send out another communication probably tomorrow to remind everyone of that fact we encourage people to attend the town hall to ask questions about the future of Walden and any other clarifying inform information that we can provide um we encourage to hear your feedback and hear your voices so hope you can attend great thank you next is the assistant superintendent for business thank you Mr President a few things tonight um thank you very much with your approval of the consent agenda we do have some
new staff that will be joining us in the business office um Moren uh who will be taking over a vacant account clerk position that we've had in the business office and many thanks to uh Jackie and the business office staff that have filled in um over the last few months while this position was vacant um public service announcement is um it is often very hard to hire Tied by the Civil Service rules and regulations I think a lot of people in the public don't know to go look and take civil service exams uh we should encourage them to do so because when we are tied to hiring off of these lists um a lot of times this don't exist but they're very very hard to get from civil service so uh we had a vacant
position back there for a few months we are not an office that has a lot of extra fluff so it was a t task for everybody back there also Shannon who will be taking over registar duties um from Janine Maro who's retiring in January uh Shannon will be beginning with us in December for a couple weeks of overlap and then we'll uh see what we can do going into January next is we've had some uh meetings with faculty uh related to the impact of the upcoming construction project we went to the Berea Elementary School faculty meeting uh this morning as well as we've had conversations with the high school science department also the high school English Department regarding the upcoming projects down there um we are considering moving the esy program next summer from Berea
because of the amount of construction to another building final decision has not been uh made at this time but I think we are leaning towards East coldenham would be the most appropriate place for that program this summer um because the bulk of their work uh ventilation project will not happen until next summer so that's kind of where we're at with that um next week I do have a meeting with CPL to go over um it's kind of a kickoff meeting for the fleet electrification study that they are doing for us which is uh as I told you before funded by nerta so I can give you an update after that uh thirdparty review for the 2024 voter approved Capital project uh great news we are currently under review up at Ned so uh show cost
us a little bit of money but it was uh well worth it and we will without a doubt get our get our approval time to do that work summer uh today I attended the town of Montgomery Ida meeting on behalf of the superintendent so the board received presentation by an energy storage company regarding a proposed project on 17K in coldenham which uh I will just note um does not appear to create any permanent jobs um and lastly the uh tennis court um uh board awarded contracts at the last board meeting and it uh it looks like the contractor will get started um November 25th with mobilization of equipment on the 21st and 22nd uh we have the potential for if the asphalt plans shut down we may not be able to complete the asphalt this
winter we've talked about got it with the athletic department and uh everybody is on board with going forward at this point recognizing that we may have to pick it up and complete it in the spring because it will hopefully allow us to get in uh the spring or at least the the second half of the spring season on those tennis courts so um both uh Rodney and Mike are working on some plans to have some practice facilities and to move some uh the first events to another site if we have to rep play them on the road but we are moving forward and that is all I have tonight thank you very much next is the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction um we had our superintendent conference day on November 5th I'm pleased to
share that we've received uh overwhelmingly positive feedback we had over 30 different sessions for teachers to attend um at on this day and we launched our online modules that were very specific for the roles of our PR par professionals and that was also well received and we'll continue to Target and differentiate the sessions as for Priority One in our strategic in regards to um some some things that I've attended specifically I attended the Blue Ribbon commission Forum at bosis on October 21st where there was an overview of the proposed changes for graduation for graduation measures and we were able to provide feedback on that forum for in regards to the opportunities and challeng Alles for those proposals um and what that would create there is nothing s uh set in stone uh it is simply
recommendations and proposals by the state this has not been approved or anything along those lines but it was definitely an opportunity to share where we can see some of those highlights as well as challenges that we may face as school districts across the state that's all thank you next is our assistant superintendent for human resources evening everyone we've recommended five pair of Professionals for hire on this agenda as well as one food service worker as Brad uh commented we've also recommended a new Central regist and a new account clerk in the business office so like to welcome all of our new employees I'd also like to welcome our temporary athletic director Rodney Weeden who's over here in the audience tonight uh as he works with our athletic department and Mr steer's absence I had the
pleasure of attending our Spanish Honor Society induction ceremony at the High school last week so I'd like to congratulate all the students who were inducted and uh during the days of October 20th to the 23rd uh I had an opportunity to attend the New York State Association of school Personnel administrators conference in Syracuse New York uh that's com for all HR administrators across the state uh to learn about legal updates in the field as well as discuss pertinent uh School HR issues uh that come across so um that is PR all right thank you okay next uh as said we all went to the Schoolboard convention so I'm just gonna ask R Robin if anybody has anything they like to share about the convention or any of the sessions they went to I want to
say that as much as I enjoy meeting other board members and people from different school districts I think my favorite session was with the commissioner of Education Betty Rosa it's always very interesting to me you know to interact with other board members but to hear about things that are affecting people on the state level like that's a lot more interesting to me because it's stuff that's going to trickle down and it kind of gives us a clue of what's coming so that was probably my favorite thing I agreee it's just such it's such a bigger issue than just schools it's legislature it's so much affects all of us sitting at the at on these seats um and it was interesting to know I also attended Blue Ribbon Commission and um on graduation requirements and it's
going to be interesting for sure reimagining um what graduations don't look like maybe not for you guys you guys are still have to do have to sit for those regions exams um but maybe for younger siblings or neighbors or who knows when your own kids one day or maybe your own kids honestly you never know State could be your own kid that was very um I thought the opening presentation was um very eye opening there was an AI robot that address the the crowd was her name like you know were not pre-programmed right I mean I didn't make sense they were pre-programmed questions so she was flirting with the guy how weird it is to see a robot flirting with someone very weird it was weirder to see him FLIR her there was one other
presentation that I went to and I think you attended as well was the um talking about the classrooms of classrooms of the future because they're you look at classrooms a 100 years ago and look at them today they really haven't changed much um and even though they say 65% of um what you guys are going to be doing uh those professions have not even been invented yet um we need to have make sure our learning environments are adaptable for those jobs in the future so not talking about desks anymore we're talking about collaborative spaces and forward all right very good all right next we'll move on to the guidance advisor committee report well I'm on that committee however that committee met while we were at the convention so all right check uh health and safety
committee so I attended that meeting um one of the highlights not highlights one of the things that was discussed was our procedures for Mass event sign-ins um things like concerts open hous conferences we were just discussing a little bit about how we could have people sign in just to know who's in the schools who's walking around um some Pro and cons about how we can even do something like that if it's feasible or not um just thinking ahead and thinking about where some of our um weaknesses may be within the district um we also did a tabletop exercise is that right Brad so it was it was super awesome um you're given an emergency situation and you need to just talk through what should happen at the building level the admin level the law enforcement
level um I as a board member I'm not privy I wouldn't be in that situation necessarily so it was interesting to listen to everyone be like H what should we do right because you're giving all these policies and procedures but it's not very often that you're actually put in that situation so it was very interesting to kind of hear people like oh yeah this happens then we do this then we do this and then be corrected um it was a good refresh of procedures and protocols um prior to being in in hopefully no one's ever in that situation but it just kind of makes you prepared for if you ever are so that was it was really fun I did that's it unless that wants to add anything I think you did a great job
next is the technology planning committee that was I attended that um so the um the first thing we talked about was how how to disseminate the information that's discussed during the committee to um not just building leaders but really to everybody in the district because it it really is important for for everyone to know all of the the items that we talk about um for example um the multiactor authent authentication um and um passwords um you know and the reasoning why we have these things in the school district um we also talked about uh the new software request form which is a um a Google um form now that any um staff can fill out for um software that they requesting the district take a look at um although we do already have um multiple
pages of software that the district already has um that um staff are able to use to to help with their instruction um so um a lot of good things and then um the last thing that we had is we had uh one of our gr teachers demonstrate how generative AI can be used to enhance uh lesson quality which was pretty amazing so you want Sophia in the classroom no clarifying a computer exactly all right next we'll move on to we move on to community participation Fran to report angrew yes I the span Society Juliet I don't know one more thing yes that's what I have um I attended the um volleyball the Varity varsity volleyball team sectional um game up at FDR um Unfortunately they did not win but it was the end of a
Seas okay s um yes I was able to attend the oxa meeting meeting on November 6 and we heard from lcy Trimble who's the commissioner uh nor County Department of Social Services and mental health and she just gave an overview of all their services I brought home a bunch of pamphlets and I will pass along her presentation to you um on November 18th at 2 o'clock for any board members interested there's a B's tour of the amable Chris campus in gold if anyone would like to go to that what date November 18th at 2m and um they also sent home from to us for board appreciation week last month um some nice note cards that were made by these special education students Andes to share with you guys so I'll pass them out later gift
cards yeah um that's it I was able to attend some sporting events some football games soccer games volleyball and swimming and Diving sections that we hosted at Valley Central great Diana umid the nma convention I also attended Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare production I'm always amazed that of of the talent that is always exhibited at those shows I'm always really impressed by the attendance and you know as a former teacher I get very excited to see that kids are excited about Shakespeare and they do such a great job in bringing Shakespeare to life and make it relatable to everybody where everyone can really enjoy it and appreciate you know that art ktie um I attended bunch of modified boy soccer games they had a great season ended with a winning season um I attended Romeo and
Juliet and as Diana said they do a good job of making it modern um and relatable so it's not so stuffy and listen I'm not a huge Shakespeare person I don't really it's like they're speaking Greek to me but I will say that because I had a child in the production I went both nights and I highly recommend it because the first night you're kind of like okay yeah I kind of follow the storyline know what's going on but then by the second night you're actually understanding the hieroglyphics that they're saying and you're like picking up on jokes and everything so it was it was very well done um that's it for me I got it all the first night show off I did not yeah all right so I stopped by senior night football
game but it was cold and we were winning by so much I left so that was a nice feeling so great season for them and uh nice to see a few changes can go a long way so um next is community participation nothing all right we're going to move on on to new business uh first um and take a motion for the approval of the 2425 District internal audit scope and focus Jane second Sarah all in favor I oppos 70 thank you next is the approval of the certification of uncollected school taxes motion to approve I'll second Angela ktie second all in favor post 70 next is the approval of authorization of capital project 2023 and 24 change orders can I get a motion to approve Fran second Diana Diana all in favor whoever I
hear gets it approval of Paving and seal coding bid recommendation for advanced Paving markings can I get a motion to approve Sarah second Jane all in favor I oppos 70 thank you next the approval of construction trats Apprenticeship Training requirements motion to approve motion Andrea ktie second all in favor I oppos 70 thank you next is the approval of the 2526 budget planning calendar motion to approve I'll make a motion it's budget season rad knows Shrek was putting on the play all in favor hi 70 next the approval of agreement between Valley Central student district and epic Athletics motion to approve question just I didn't see a location on the contract Middle Town there's no address yeah oh yeah I had to look it UPC I had to look it up Drive Sarah second second
Katie all in favor I posos 70 thank you um notice of review of High School curriculum Next Generation geometry is available and that brings us to our presentations for Club Charters and first we have the high school book club these are my people right here book nerd so while they're getting out ready I'll talk so my name is k o I'm the English department chair at the high school and I brought three students with me R who is on the board of education with you Isaiah and and basically what happened is they sabotaged me last year um and got me in my classroom and asked me what it would take to start a book club at Valley Central and so I explained the process to them of creating a charter and they were they're actually
um we missing one of our kind of founding members Jody um I just didn't bring everybody tonight and I explained to them the charter process and they ran with it so they actually wrote this Charter last year and proposed it to run but we had missed the deadline because you know we didn't know and so what the kids are asking to do is run a book club kind of like we do in our communities if any of you are involved in them I am in one I think that they have heard me talk about it and I find it very re rewarding and um enriching and so we looked at what that could look like for Valley Central and so they worked together to make a slideshow and then we adjusted the slideshow a little
bit to incorporate some of the charter for you in case you hadn't seen the charter and so we are very hopeful that we can maybe get this going this year we did create a Google Classroom just to see if there was expressed interest in students we do have over 20 students and that is without any um announcements in the school because it it technically does not exist yet obviously it's at your discretion and they are already like trying to do things and I'm always talking like we have there's a process and we have to do that and so I'm going to allow them to run and I'm happy to answer any of your questions do you guys need a clicker or anything or is that as a slideshow or is that a PDF it should
be slides it's a CA slid my get just right um so we plan to call our club talk so how will our club work and what are summer goals um our primary goal is for students who love to read step outside of their comfort zone and read and discuss a book that they have never read before um we hope to create a space where students are able to have light-hearted or even more serious conversations about topics that we read in our books um our goals one we hope to foster a love for reading kids who maybe want to read more but don't really know where to start um to expose stud to diverse types of literature so whether that be romance novels or Mysteries or Thrillers or classic novels um we hope to encourage respectful
discussions around expressive topics like um domestic abuse and other things like that um and we hope to make connections between literature and the real world so between what we read on paper and our real expences so how do we get our books to read um each book is randomly picked by a generator suggestions everyone gives um students can suggest one book any genre but only one book will be chosen for every together this is honestly a great opportunity for students to read a genre they have never read before um they explore topics that they traditionally wouldn't have um get to explore their comfort zone really fun so discusses how they go um we will start off by letting each student share reading on the book afterward you'll start to discuss thought on the book which
from De um this a chance look at the book in another perspective and we feel this often offer students the best to get most out of their book um story might not have TR so stud we want to make getting these books easy and Equitable for everybody so it doesn't have to be a costly Club so we're trying to pick books that students can find in the library Sora which are both digital to expand the the club hopefully so we could organize book um have speakers and question I have a question how many books a month do you read right now one one yes hope me every no I mean you personally oh well it's school right now it's tough but you guys doing this over the summer um I would say like at a
good time to Yeah question a week AEK one a week a week and they're like I've never me too roor me too can board members be part of this club yes [Laughter] okay oh any other questions how many books do you read a month Joe how many I uh use the cliff notes yeah don't catching up I do just want to tell you one thing when they came to see me last year I haven't had that much excitement and positivity about the students wanting to read books in a very long time so that was really like really spoke to me as an English teacher but also as a mom like to have kids that were passionate about it and this one in particular has not let off so she created the slideshow she started to
organize stuff and I was like no no no no we're like we're not a club yet like we're not allowed to do anything and then when you drive through our Villages you see that all the elementary schools have Book Fairs and they were like can we have a book fair so I said okay we can add that as like one of our future goals but the high school used to have an oldfashioned Scholastic Book Fair and it actually did quite well and also was a great Community event and there you know these are things that they want to do Beyond just a group of students reading which you know already has my heart but they also want to bring in the younger kids they want to bring in the community members and invite other people
to come in and read with us and talk with us in that non-educational setting so that you know they can just enjoy it and so I was like okay don't really need to do another thing but I will and so my um partner retired in the meantime So Lisa paus was going to do it and with me um if it is granted and so we have started to prep our new library media specialist to to kind of ease him in as well um which I think will appeal to a larger group of students as well so thank you so much um before quickly sorry sorry sorry um I would like to add that you know we also to have teachers read with us and bond with them as well it's not just for the students
um and it's a great opportunity for seniors to get to know freshman you know get to know other students that we wouldn't talk to and other teachers as well um they also want me to read books like scary books I don't want to do that's open your mind thank you very much all right next we have have the high school HOSA club for future health professionals did I say that right HOSA so I'm Mariah I'm a science teacher at the high school and we have Isabella and L here we're gonna talk about the H Club they'll give you a little bit more in depth information on it but it's geed towards students interested in health occupations After High School and really has them get hands-on experience talk to other students not only in our school
but in schools around New York about their passion for science specifically working in the healthare field so them hi I'm and interested in because I inure and I know a lot of kids who also want toal field whether it be not even just Medical but science maybe a science teacher or researcher or a nurse and so I found was researching what I to start learning about high school was so I found it's a national organiz useducation and it introduces students to the health commun at an early stage SOA introduces students to the health when I wascha I found that it had four main goals these goals were leadership career exploration competitions and community service so the leadership as aspect was that students can hold leadership position at a local state and National level they also
develop leadership skills through a variety of activities programs and competitions these competitions and activities are designed to challenge students to take initiative and manage teams and also make critical Decisions by participating in these activities students not only enhance their communication and time management but also develop confidence and Leadership skills and these are skills that they're going to need when they're in these positions because you're not only helping like yourself you're helping other people charge of their lives so the career exploration aspect was that during these competitions um there's also a big Community aspect so they're able to explore their interest through the different competitions there's over 50 competitions in different um categories and so they're able to really expl and understand what they want to do and they're able to compete in that scholarship spr
