005of fifth grade moving up ceremonies um all of these ceremonies um were the last week of school and also had award assemblies through the month of June and then our special wonderful event of our 66 and commencement ceremony happened on Saturday 200 um 24 and on um and that was just an awesome expression of of a of all of sorry she stole my mouse okay um expression of how wonderful not only our students are but the staff and parents and everyone who came and and uh coming all together to celebrate our students as they move into the next chapter in their lives and so I shared details and commended those involved and shared her I shared my appreciation to the board members central office administrators and routinely attending the wonderful event so thank you everyone

008time um I actually beat student in in arcade game so I'm very proud of that um she was very surprised that I could do it but I didn't you s karaoke I did not see karaoke listen to the karaoke ha they never heard of it so um the the children had a wonderful time and um we're very excited there were over a hundred uh Raffles that were prizes that were given away um and they just were having a really good time and uh earli today I sent out the last newsletter for this school year um the Viking voyage and I U sent out a text and a email um with celebrating our year so just want to make sure everybody takes the opportunity to read that um there a lot of good information in there
009okay great thank you next we'll move to our assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction um so I have I attended my first senior award ceremony I have a lot of first still uh rounding down I know I'm getting close to August which is my one year anniversary but um I also attended the Walden Elementary School moving up ceremony and it was a very beautiful ceremony um and our design two of strategic planning and as well as my very first graduation uh which was also a beautiful beautiful ceremony and luckily we weren't rained on and it wasn't too hot it was a beautiful day beautiful morning um and just in regards to kind of our data teams and the focus for cni we are drafting our updated plans for uh mtss and professional learning that will
010be um hopefully coming to its end or at least a draft of that moving coming soon and I've been working with Dr Felder and Nick specifically our our Consultants around our Advanced courses and opportunities as well as Master scheduling and the data analysis of multiple measures um in AIS mtss as well as our courses and advanced placements and last but not least we have finally identified our literacy pilot uh for next school year and with a majority vote from the committee um a very long process of collaboration though um thorough debriefs and and presentations and such in addition to to school visit to Virtual visits with other districts we are using amplify ccla um for our literacy pilot for next school year that's all I have all right great all right now we're going to

012capacity as a board members it's always a very special meeting of the Year this one and the one that you approve the budget results are the two special ones for me um just wanted to acknowledge um you guys don't know how much work goes into this agenda because I was on the board and I didn't so Ellen um please give her a thank you for this this is a very very heavy lift and it is a little bit earlier than it is normal but it is a lot of work and I just just share that with you so you know that so all right so moving forward capital project update so on the agenda tonight is for you to award contracts um for what we're call in phase three and this will take care of
013the parking lot and uh which I call the gym Lobby entrance on the east side of the high school it'll be great to have that area refreshed as well as um some reconstruction on the Middle School side of the parking lot um we're going to redo the sidewalk around that side of the building so the small buses will be able to park on an angle make sure that that area is properly lit um and has adequate drainage a new refu enclosure um and also included on this on the high school side of things is an ornamental Gate entrance onto our athletic fields so um um we're looking forward to moving forward with with that and then um you know we'll talk about the final design on what the word are on the uh the letters
014over the top so want to come on that but um should see some nice improvements uh at the high school um the ARP and Carissa Grand projects for room 96 and 100 this would be an art room and a tech room they uh began in Earnest today with demolition um the 2023 Capital project this is the one that the voters approved last May um phase one of the project has finally been picked up up at net the fiscal review is complete it is now on to architectural and Engineering review uh phase two is already up there and phase three is expected to be up there in the fall uh also tonight um you're uh formally appointing CSR for the um architectural designs for the work that was approved 2024 Capital project this work will go
015up to SED in September and we're hoping that their timeline improves enough where we can get at s did and complete this construction next summer uh next is just to make you aware um Central School District will be hosting the town of Montgomery's uh National Night Out on August 6 even with the construction um we're going to manage that appropriately so the back fields will be accessible as well as the concession stand will be uh open and the bathrooms will be usable and then finally I just wanted to talk a little bit about the heat that we experienced on June 20th and 21st as you know we we moved up the start of the um uh end of year half days to include those days it was absolutely the right decision um on those days
016um we were able to get out and just about every building and get into some classrooms and they were they were very warm by the afternoon we did have temperatures in classrooms that were above 85 Degrees uh some at Walden were over 90 um kitchens were were were very hot and miserable as well so many thanks to all the kitchen staff uh custodians bus drivers bus drivers um you know and sitting in those buses waiting for kids to load it was it was very very warm um so um doing those early dismissals was absolutely the right call and um that just kind of brings us to as we go forward into the fall and uh we you know we said we were going to evaluate our facilities plan annually um don't lose sight of what
017we just experienced it's it's not going away you know these these warm temperatures and the school years just keep getting longer and longer so I know we've talked about considering air conditioning as the roofs come up um and we can talk about whether that stays to plan for now or you guys want to modify it a little bit as we move forward so yeah can we um look back at like the last five or six years and just check temperatures during like I'm just curious like the trend this year we were a week later than normal so like I am curious right because it's a lot of money yes and I'm curious if we're talking about four days or are we talking about 14 days right like so I think it'd be interesting because I
018think we're GNA have to talk about that more and I think we're gonna that would be helpful yeah I think so and as we um as we move towards uh cooling zones right so this Capital project that was approved in 2023 will take care of at least um all the cafeterias at the elementary level and um we're going to have to address the Middle School cafeteria at least then there'll be cooling zones where you can put students in but it's not a whole school so when um I was over at Walden on Thursday and we had classrooms over 90 they did the best they could to move kids into cooler spaces but there's just not a lot so you got you know rooms that are D doubled up the students it's it's just not an
019environment that's conducive to to learning yeah however um and then also you have up at the state level the bill that's on the governor's desk that states uh 82 degrees you've got to take efforts to either bring in fresh air take some you know um action to try to cool things but 88 degrees you have to vacate the space and we did have some classrooms that reach 88 um it's just overall it's just a miserable not not a good environment they're to fund that right yes yes so 40 $40 million is the high level cost estimate to air condition all of our stes didn't it also impact testing yes um so uh I think Thursday Thursday and Friday they moved what they could into air conditioned spaces but also postponed until Monday so we didn't
020have her testing on Friday um it was a local exam that we rescheduled for Monday that um because we had geometry in the morning and on Thursday it we were able to have enough space where the students were in air conditioned spaces so it wasn't um they weren't impacted by the heat in that way uh and and they were monitoring the gym as well so that it would they were able to continue with the region exams right but it's a lot of work shifting and it is it is a lot of work but I think that we specifically we we had a very collaborative approach in the sense of meeting with Administration and with ourselves um and asking the right questions for what would be best for students and how we can keep students comfortable
021as they take Regents exams especially um as they are current you know as they are still graduation requirements and we want to make sure that the heat was something that impacted them in a negative way but the kids the kids were great and and they with and the staff is great as well that supported the decisions that were made okay great thanks anything else for nope that's it all right thank you very much uh next we'll do community participation Fran well I also attended the senior Awards night always lovely to see how much the community gives and supports our students and the hard work of a lot of the Committees you know that spend all year you know raising funds to support students and the appreciation of the students and and Families and uh graduation
022was wonderful Joe your speech you Joe everyone that spoke speeches are great student speeches were wonderful very uh you know encouraging and I was also happy it didn't rain so but I always say if the bazon is not walking it's not gonna rain it rained on my daughter last year both of my kids Andrew uh I attended senior scholarship night as well um graduation and also um I chaperoned all my grad which was fun y Shar um I was able to sit in on the last session of the strategic planning um process and it was um a pleasure to serve on that committee and I'm very excited to see the final project when it or final I guess project comes out playing um fifth grade moving upate at Montgomery Elementary School was very nice as
023usual um eth grade moving up day in the auditorium was great uh senior Awards night was very nice and graduation was wonderful as usual and it was very nice again to be outside and it it is always nice to see what a great job DC does of celebrating our students great di um I attended the senior Awards night also it was wonderful to see the number of students that received the awards and the doners were very generous um I attended Bia FL day that was my first time going that's right you were you were also there I just loved it I love how they sing their school song it has so much um Spirit to it um was just a lovely day um I also was able to attend the East coldenham kindergarten show and
024the also the Walden Elementary kindergarten show and the kindergarteners always make me smile just if you ever having a bad day just visiting kindergarten class you see them as a group they're adorable um also Walden moving up day beautiful I love how they really mirror our graduation to prepare the students for what's to come um I also attended the Middle School moving up day as well as graduation which of course was a beautiful Wonder day wonderful day with walk weather ktie I attended graduation and it was my first time handing out diplomas which I absolutely loved because I get to be be like here you go and they'd be like this and I got lots of smiles so I really enjoyed it I got to go to senior Awards in graduation as well I thought
