001foreign thank you foreign thank you okay both should come out of the executive session at 6 40. do you eat all in favor order the rubber reported that meeting for Monday April 17 2023 at 6 40 and it could be the question in the United States welcome thank you good evening superintendo Villa president Bond members of the board assistant superintendents uh faculty and staff and community members students thank you all for being here tonight we have two presentations here for you tonight our first the business department Valley Central Business department our teachers Nicole fuco Michael Gonzalez and department chair Denise lavali just want to welcome them tonight and we're going to present for us well good evening I'm Mrs Little Valley I'm a teacher at the high school in the business department um tonight we're
002going to talk about some of the offerings that the business department has for our high school students um so I am one of three teachers Mr Gonzalez and Miss Hugo this allows us to offer a wide variety of classes for our students we have introduction to business business ownership Sports and financial sports and entertainment marketing career and financial management and accounting we also offer three college level classes for accounting marketing and macroeconomics um next year we're really excited to offer a happier class in sports management Miss Hugo's done an awesome job building the sports entertainment marketing class and the students wanted more so we are going to introduce sports management next year we have a student who's taken a couple of business classes students Orozco so he's just going to share his experience it helps
003combined Sports and business in one world it helps other people explore job outside leading an athlete I myself Amazon athlete over Grand Valley Central High School I played the football for Mr mcmally and the sports enemy American business class has helped me see ways of sports app never really focus on the career and I enjoyed every limit especially with every project you've done in class such such as various tests of quizzes or even Hands-On learning experiences and what we did in class I think it's really to explore in Business Schools we like to do a lot of projects we really want to develop student soft skills and their employability skills for instance in Grand financial management we spend about half this school year and students Exploring Careers that might be a potential fit for them
004and having them learn how to search for jobs apply to jobs build their resume cover letters we do mock interviews with them and in all their classes we really try to teach students how to conduct themselves professionally in the workplace um and one thing I love about the content that we teach is even if the students aren't going to go into a business major college or own their own business one day they learn how to be they learn good consumer skills and how to be stabbing consumers for themselves in their personal lives is good so umati says in career financial management we're very excited because as the first and second Market period we're focus on the career and then third and fourth we kind of focus on financial literacy um just a tidbit um there
005were only 13 schools in New York state um that have a mandate where students have to take a personal financial literacy class um in order to graduate um there's actually a bill in New York state where it's making it a requirement that every single student in high school has to take a financial support the last day to a proof that was the state of Florida um but we're super excited we're waiting for that um and we would love the valley central party be school number 14 um to include that and the only neighboring school um that has it is High School in Rockland County so Advantage Central could be number one to mandate and it would be the first and only School in large accounting I think that would look great to our district we
006love our financial literacy classes um okay so we also offer workshops during the year and in the summer to any student in the high school they don't have to take business classes to attend um some of the topics that we've done is resume writing how to file taxes how to fill out the FAFSA and scholarships um interviewing skills and Entrepreneurship our department takes two pretty unique and cool field trips in the fall we go to MetLife Stadium and in the spring they go to Yankee Stadium and they get to tour the stadiums and then meet with business professionals that work behind the scenes that help and go to organizations run smoothly so the students are exposed to careers that maybe match their love of sports to actual business profession such as like sales marketing Human
007Resources um and a whole list of others and then we have our business and marketing Honors Society of New York State we have 33 conducted members this year and I love this for our students because um we tend to get students that have done really well in the business classes and have taken a lot of our classes and they qualify for our Honor Society where they might not be in every other Honor Society so they kind of find their Niche there um and then I have Miss Duco she's the advisor for our FBLA Club so the future Business Leaders of America has about 30 members who compete annually in the Spring District competition at mono Woodbury High School I am proud to say that since it was inducted into in 2018 it has since grown
008uh this year we had 12 people compete seven of them placed in five qualify for States um and what students generally love decides a competitive aspect is that they're around students who have similar interests in business and are also looking to expand their Horizons and eventually you know transition into a business career or maybe a business major at the next level and what they can do that's unique in FBLA College sector that are the pretty unique field right away it helps them make those connections connections to the college and then career level and lastly our performance really trying to expand our workplace learning program um it's a unique program in that there's three Pathways for our students to earn business elective credits while interning or working out in their jobs um so our goals with
009this is just to really develop the students employability skills outside of the classroom it helps them be more eligible for Honor Society because they're earning those elective credits and then ultimately we're really trying to connect the community and our students and raise career awareness about the local industries that are here and that would love to introduce our students to the job center right around here and that they need future workforces for um so these are images of all the placements that we have students in currently right now um the one way we're going to start trying to get this ball rolling is implementing trades tables Wednesdays in the high school Lobby during lunch periods where a trades professional will have a table and students during the monsters can interact with the trace professional to learn
010more we're gonna have more guest speakers in our business classes and then ultimately work to build a database where we can connect with community members and the students for placements um I want to thank you Randy picarello a lot from The Business Council Creator Montgomery for helping me build those network connections um so I also I just have two students I just wanted to say quick think about their placement and workplace learning okay so I work at Keller Williams and I love working candy because I can get like recognition for having a job and also get a credit I use my credit doors business hours already which I wouldn't have been able to be in unless I have workplace learning um I like that to give you another trade and it just obviously like opens
011rising to a lot of the kids I think gives like an incentive to have internships and yeah and then let that be recovery it's mostly in the financial Wellness I had the pleasure of working with the supervisor last year to Albany um I've done blood drives with them I did one last year and I'm doing another one actually this Friday and last year I did Valley Central was willing to sponsor and hope their flyer up on the Facebook page um it's really rewarding to be able to work on something and have recognition not only through my job of course but through the school because not a lot of people know about the different things that all of us students do so this program really helps us to be able to show what we do and
012like our work is put is goes towards something and you can see that because on our school records and our own transcripts it shows that we have these other activities that we do that's okay so that's our department thank you for your time questions thank you my snails our business part we're super excited about that all the great things we're doing as you can see it's it's thriving and growing and kids are really wanting to be part of it and our our classes are busting at the team so it's uh and that's as by Design our second presentation is a program that we are also very excited about today's super is tomorrow's teachers um which just started this year and we have our advisors here we have our students here and uh to share it
013with us we have Yolanda Maldonado and Tanisha Ray Parker and our csep students so um thank you [Applause] hello and I want to start by thanking everyone for the competition our students are excited about being able to get this opportunity to present as Dr Burns stated this is the first year here and it's the first time in Orange County so this is the new program for the county is year one of the two schools that are participating a lot is happening a lot is moving quickly and a lot to come the program runs for four years and the goal of the program is really um so Dr Perkins the CEO about 30 years ago noticed that there was a shortage of teachers even way back when and we know what's happening now right so it
014hasn't gotten any better it's actually that shortage has increased and there's a high dropout rate when it comes to the teaching profession so she noticed some of these shortcomings and she decided to focus on the program that call today students tomorrow's teachers which focuses on recruiting mentoring and training culturally diverse and economically challenged student starting from high school through college with the goal of returning them back as very um seasoned effective teachers in their community so we call it the full circle you start here and you come back here to your community it's a community you know you know what it was like to be a student you know what the challenges were and especially for the targeted audience that we're looking at which is that we do have it's like creating diversity in the
015county right so um what we do is lots of different things we do a summer internship and what that requires is 20 hours of actual shadowing for assistant teaching or working in the camp literally having those experiences with students the younger students or students of their own age be in tutoring assisting the teacher so to start becoming familiar and comfortable in the classroom you're gonna the students are going to tell you themselves so I'm gonna try to keep it short because really it's for them to share I do have a brochure for everyone here and look at the board so you can read further on the program um we partner with 21 colleges and universities and they work with us we have different conferences throughout the year they send people they attend they partner with
016us and now we visit the colleges they have previous TST students meet our students they do mock interviews they have questions and answer sessions um it's really very complex so like I said there's so much to tell in a short period but I would like our students to get a chance to speak so I think so we have our first student coming up she's going to discuss the selection process for the TSTC program and learning this entity and admitted Rivera and I'm going to tell you guys about the selection process uh we go through multiple steps first we get interviewed by a school administrator the teacher mentor and the original program manager and then we submit a writing sample answering the question why I want to speak the teacher then we complete a TSD TST
017students who actually commissioner and we obtain two medical centers this is a lot of practice but when they actually go next we have Jaden so in tsct we are trained to be teachers that she said and we'll be focus on is leadership in the classroom and even outside of the classroom we work on being able to express ourselves to students who may have different challenges than we do and try to understand everyone and tsct we want to help push our gender of teachers helping kids that may seem like in different ways and I think that tftt is a great great program to help push out teachers for the next generation of students so here are some pictures um from our induction um the yearbook photo and just different experiences that the students had at the
018beginning of their Journey next we have Alexandria Odell uh we attended the 28th official Multicultural programs in the norfolks University which taught us about diversity equity and inclusion which is we talked we learned about how we can interact more with students and other teachers alike to create a better reading and reading and learning environment for our kids next we'll have Mason will bevilla speak about the Multicultural conference students couldn't make it regards himself during the Multicultural conference the students have the opportunity to witness the whenever Caravan performance and the whenever Caravan performance dancers basically go around different countries in different states and they go into our schools and just show students different cultures and performances so we had an opportunity to see that during the multiple and during the conference the students participated in a
019lot of workshops that dealt with all of these issues and it was all very like exploratory a lot of questions and what was nice is they got to meet a lot of students from other school districts not just here or from all over and I got to meet the other tsct students so I think it was kind of an eye-opener for you guys right they were all full of stories and bubbling where they came out because technology in the classroom every day so let's be um and also exploring literacy hello Empire and you know I'm going to talk about exploding literacy and the trip to Berea the trip to Korea allowed us to have a first-hand experience with the younger kids and teach us how to interact with them how to you know just go
020along with them and also taught us how to read to them how to talk to them because you know they don't understand things like we do so getting that experience allowed us to see things from the way they see all right so we started out actually before we went to the elementary school and we definitely wanted to see here today no well we want to thank him and his teachers they were phenomenal I can't tell you the welcome they gave us the kids the little ones were phenomenal and it was just such a beautiful experience so they're starting right off on the get-go learning about teaching right the first thing I did classroom observations so we did a little activity where they had to you know we talked about what is observation and do we
021really observe our world so do we kind of go around doing everything we have to do right especially now they say click click click click click click you miss half of what's happening so to be good teachers you really have to be good at observing that classroom and not just the one student or something small you have to observe everything at once so we did a little um activity with a video where while they're watching the video a whole bunch of things are changing and when the video ends it says did you see the changes and it was phenomenal because did you see the changes not so much and that's how you learn right you learn like trial and error so um during the classroom observations we're looking for the things that teachers look for
022right physical environment the social emotional environment instructional environment and classroom management we're just touching on the surface of these because it's a four-year program we're able to build each year we'll go deeper and deeper into these topics and then we have the exploring literacy so they've had to um observe classrooms in all grades in the sense of elementary middle and high school and we talk about those differences what about what's going on also it's an experience for them to realize what grade would they like to teach um You probably have a lot of co-workers right who start off in one grade and end up switching to another so uh by giving them this experience I'm hoping that they will go right into the group that they like the most um and this is just phenomenal
023I I can't I can stand here and tell you lots and lots of stories we've been welcomed to come back anytime um probably you know this would be part of well we'll see the rest because I keep going yeah so still to come tomorrow we have a trip to Sunil Paul's where the students will have be involved in a stand workshop with 3D printing on Career Development and also get a tour of some of the reports on the campus they also have shadowing um that they're going to do and then an introduction to tutoring and then lastly just communication skills and team building which will be happening all throughout the four years that they are in the program and we also have Chase um banks that will be doing workshops with us for the next
024four years uh we'll be doing one the following week and then it's all about financial literacy we do things like help them with interviewing skills writing formal um letters such as before they could go to any of these teachers and observe their classrooms they had to write a letter they had to say can I call them I'm doing this and I'm doing that and I like to observe your class so by the time they finish they're really ready to get out there and start working and again with the idea of when they graduate from college bringing them back home we stay in touch with them it's not like they hate high school and it's over no we continue to constantly stay in touch with them we have mentoring programs we have programs within the competition
025questions of the students this is a great program that enthusiastic I know we also have an internship in education class I believe that was all for this year our interview in the class or plan on taking that as an elective just Department build on it I definitely feel like it depends a professionally we want to teach we feel as if you want to be a teacher in English the University of high school today honestly feel like this University yeah we give them a lot of flexibility because it's an awareness exposure it's not you have to be this kind of teacher and I think I think that's what you're referring to right they have a sense of freedom and ownership I'm not saying the other program doesn't offer that in fact I do speak to miss
026Raleigh and she's been phenomenal so she's she's a great program she's a great program that she's doing and what we're doing is slightly different our focus is and this allows them the flexibility to also continue because once you have to schedule your classes you kind of get locked in all of our meetings are after school thank you thank you thank you for your time a couple of changes to note on the agenda on your section five um today and then we're going to be removing the induction 2220 to our budget and a circle of property tax report card for today and we're going to have that on the agenda for approach all right we're going to jump into correspondence I received an invitation to the Valley Center High School as well as honors production ceremony
027which will take place on Tuesday May 23rd 6 pm excited to attend accommodations okay I had a wonderful time at the humanities society that we attended to honor Sierra DeVito and Emily Hogan they were named the Orange County Ulster BOCES senior scholar Cosmetics they will recognize through their achievements a ceremony at the monkey Club at Albertville on April 13th some honorable mentions East Tottenham Elementary School their graduation is on March 20 on March 31st he's holdingham Elementary School Foundation celebration was April 12th and Walden elementary schools Community leader day was April 13th foreign [Music] next we'll move on to our school Representatives Full House tonight a grad member to help them during the period during a period of periods the SE this is very um programs as well this is a very successful and fun
028advantage and currently it's an application for your sophomore juniors interested in being a freshman orientation leader these are the future to do April 19th and 2010 so to continue on the business education the business department went on a field trip to the ECU the students got toured um the ones that were in the educational American classes there's going to be an opportunities expo at high school April 26 from 9 30 to 11 15. high schoolers had the opportunity to explore internships and job opportunities right before it's been great as she mentioned new members included interceptors to be invested and the question volunteer Club still has merch available Revelation literary magazine needs sponsors to help adult magazine and our need of student assisting the art and literary work the deadline April 19th is Wednesday money donations
029are being collected in the donation box in the main office for local pregnancy centers to support women in need all contributions go to providing supplies of care for struggling with others donations will be until April 27th Viking voice paper is that you could buy a hobby for one dollar and all right for girls lacrosse they have a current record of four to two and Senior Captain chairman Phillips and Junior Captain Becky will score their 100th career goal this past Friday and Saturday the boys acrossip record is also afforded him because I'm going against Monroe would bear tomorrow apart and pitched a perfect game against Washingtonville I Believe on Friday or Thursday um the new girls class football team has also has a program record of 2-0 and hoping to win their Championship soon and baseball
030almost has a current record before too thank you thank you very much let's go to the superintendent questions I just wanted to acknowledge that the humanities it was just um a wonderful event to see all of each of the talent that was in the room [Music] as well attended the scholarship council meeting the Walden Rotary meeting and also led to a fourth grade class all right next we'll go to the assistant superintendent thank you so right now there are 17 enrichment workshops scheduled for the summer there's over 400 spots held by our students for those courses the notifications I started sending them out yesterday parents know that they're supposed to be there by May 1st but they will be all out by tomorrow in order for parents to be able to plan a purpose so
031all parents will know by tomorrow in the workshops we only had a witness in two courses so we are randomly tomorrow we are offering 22 Regent prep courses just strength and a number of Saturday practice tests the prep courses will provide to assist students prepare for the Regions exam of course but also to provide them with confidence and to reduce their stress um I am currently working on a draft of an extracurricular survey to measure the impact that clients have on our students we are creating one from high school middle school and Elementary School I've been in touch with the BOCES instructional Council and Cornwall is currently pretty much in the beginning process as our league and then Marlboro is looking into it as well so we will be sharing feedback with other on those
032surveys I've shared a draft of the survey with the cabinet and looking for their feedback and as the kids were talking and I thought they did an exceptional job today and those two programs are phenomenal some of the questions that we're considering are how does participation in the club help you to become more involved in the community and how does the participation because provide you with a job or internship opportunities so we're hoping to get in a great deal of information once the mission Runs Out um just for your information beginning with the 23 24 school year all public schools must amend their safety plans to include plans for remote instruction and these plans must include a variety of different objectives and so we will be working on that this spring and in the summer
033um about a regional job fair uh we met last week uh Personnel administrators meeting discussed different options both these ones to host it um possibly July August September they're just looking at Saturdays for availability and how that would work with everybody and you know they may have them on each of those months they may have two one month and you know one another month but um that still be United I was just trying to work on the dates um we met with Dr Burns the high school principal and I and superintendent Avila met with Jody Clark who's the president of future teachers of color club and Assuming New Paltz along with Kara breidenbach who's their vet coordinator we met with the two of them on Thursday uh the 16th of March uh just kind of
034share the vision as to what their program is kind of our programs here as you saw the today's students tomorrow's teacher program as well as future Teachers program that Miss Riley runs and it was a productive meeting we talked about of some of shared our vision talked about some of our obstacles and then Dr Burns and I set up another meeting with them to come in and to actually talk to our club advisors at the high school that was last week on April 13th and things started to really kind of come together as stuff how we could collaborate with them as far as their students from their Club coming to work with our kids after school there today students tomorrow's teachers as well as our future teacher Club talking about demo lessons talked about sample
035lessons developing a lesson plan all that kind of good stuff that they're all excited about we talked about different options with singing new faults Jody Clark and Care Bradford were really aware of the opportunities we have here with sub-peras substitute teachers coaching opportunities so after that I got in contact with SUNY New Paltz field staff or field event um who are native law student teacher coordinator and we've been working on that to try to maybe see if we can't work with them they work with Wappingers Falls right now and they have a field experience program that they run so we've got looking into that um and talk to them about other opportunities we're going to start a VC recruitment committee here maybe we'll discuss this yet but maybe we have one of them on that
036committee to kind of give us a College Point of View as to what they're looking for so um a lot on the table right now pretty excited about it they're very excited about it so we'll see how it all comes together so on Thursday we have a bid opening here at central office that will be for the right turn only exit out of the high school parking lot um along with that project the contractor will be responsible for some trenching work that needs to go back to the new scoreboard and then also um the storefront here at central office that bid opening will be on Thursday as well so hopefully you'll see some action on those projects soon um last thing we received a final approval for the tech room and art room improvements at
037the high school this is one of the first projects the article projects that was submitted to the state and this is one of the last that we have approved so it kind of shows you the status of up there um I may have mentioned this at an earlier uh board meeting but we have received notifications from dot a while back regarding a culvert replacement that they have planned just west of the middle school as you get down towards the substation there's a there's Culvert that goes through there they had the work scheduled for summer 2023. we are starting to work on our summer school transportation route so I reached out to dot for a status update on that they have pushed that project the 2024. so we don't want to deal with that this year
038and then uh the restroom should be open within the next few weeks to put the finishing touches on that so we're looking forward to having that finally operations community we had a very Lively plan about um miss new technology but it is um so we tried it out during the meeting um asked to write an essay about Westward Expansion written in from the perspective and it was incredible I think it's going to change the way we do a lot of things not only in education within your business and um and everything else and so um the biggest question we have for cutting is what are we going to go on my students use it or not um the stuff that I think that answers that 18 or older to use it so that's kind of
039a no-brainer but um the discussion was educating teachers about existence because at home um it's capabilities I think the stat was given that it's only great about 80 of the time so even if you get an answer it may not be correct your responses um and then we also need to determine how we're going to support teachers who want to introduce their students with some great standards places around it um and I guess this is not the only um AI software out there there's pilot um yes meeting on the 13th we discussed Barbara hackett's memory garden and some obstacles that they're facing with building this garden and also the weekly dreams so the city event is underway through the fall so that that's more information thank you all right next is community participation okay I
040was able to spend a lot of time at Walden I went to uh tour and went to a Steve classroom and go to their Community today it was varsity girls softball and um baby softball and same thing with lacrosse and even black football Powers you know that's nice to see just um I also on April 12th I attended uh EC uh Founders night Where Mrs brown hair brown was um honored and um on the 14th I attended the tricky trade for online grad where the community raised seven thousand dollars for online um yes I attended um is the new bathroom yes sure I was able to attend many spring sporting events and track meets baseball games and softball games and it's just great to see the backfields thank you and I2 toy tutorials Star Wars
041it was really nice this is going to be very exciting is the other one this is a big thing so that was that was great okay next we have public comment uh course meeting um I don't think it's important for us if there's concerns issues please don't support us here listening research we want our school board meetings to serve as an example to our students so he asked to demonstration yeah speakers investor constant or directly and insist that all speakers and members of the United States the board of the services I also want to point out that under the board policy that we cannot contain entertaining any comments or questions about specific Channel s or implication administrative channels or it will now entertain public comment [Music] s or o so each person will be a
042lot of coordinates each High women's main course so then sending members of Republicans public uh first up is Julie Parkington [Music] when we signed up for this emails the answer was yes 24 hours please she received she recently on 328. she is I don't know if something's going on okay if the secretary's getting it so long [Music] left church I got an email from him so communication is very important to community and I don't know if the other parents are going to say if they're going to speak on some topic too but since I committed to being that parent that was saying when I see a problem so I'm here now I'd love you to go back 320 and see what happens in Atlanta because to do that if she's inviting me to come to
043you literally so um this is a picture that we are doing more exciting we're going to do they don't want to become a problem and have parents follow the words for cleaning when it's time to use that energy and we have race honestly the community said maybe you were coming into a hard job and I recommended you for this job so I have my hopes but I don't want that to be where people are on the page complained by The Hip Hop and address their own issues but if I already have an issue this is my issue and that's what I'm bringing Parts here is my leadership and because I just want to make sure that everyone's on the same board our page was that we have concern about and I don't want to have
044to go back to Marion and I don't want to get her involved when I should be seeking with it so um all right thank you appreciate it next is Philip Hopkins my wife and I are on the table in Montgomery I know most of you from the restaurant um in November of this year we started a foundation with the help of the Community Foundation right here in Montgomery where we have an adopted son and we're very proud of our adopted son and we want to help other adopted children we want to help children in foster care and um so this November we've raised 25 000 and we're hoping by the end of May we'll be closer to 50 um and we really want to start with Valley Central as our Pilot School we're hoping to
045go county-wide um and helping these foster kids and the adopted kids in our school system um they don't have the same luxuries that my adopted son has um or the advocacy that he has from us as parents but we want to do things that are joyful for them we want to buy school yearbooks and pay for their Proms and Senior trips anything that they wouldn't get that's my child would get so we're looking to forge a relationship with the school system on how to plan for the 2023-2024 school year on how to distribute funds to the schools tell these kids so we're hoping to set up a meeting create a liaison do something to to to do this I had the luxury of meeting our superintendent the other night and she's a very lovely woman
046and I think we're going to do a lot of things to these kids so we do have an event coming up in may we welcome you all to come um and it should be very fun thank you and I want to say that most of the 25 000 we have raised has come from Montgomery the town of Montgomery so the very generous of this town we haven't even hit other communities to to raise funds thank you [Applause] um let's use um [Music] hello everyone so the reason why I'm here today is because I'm a mother of two my daughter and my son her name is alexandrina she's nine years old and my son is three and a half and today I'm here to speak about our kids from our school everybody's here speaking about kids
047high schoolers were just here talking about all the problems they have been doing in school but today it's more about trying to be the boys for the kids at MPV so um our school it's a very small school you only have 166 kids and that includes uh ubk students and as a parent and I said okay for all these children we are all here very very concerned about Security in our school yes we don't have 300 kids involved in our school because as I said before we are very very small and this is the reason why because we don't have the 300 kids we cannot even think about requesting for us as our role and unfortunately we cannot Envision or imagine all these amazing problems that we have been talking today if we are concerned
048about security we all know that unfortunately this country has a high rate of violence in the schools and that's just part of the life we are living right now but there are many things that I can be preventable and that's why we are here today because we want to be able to tragic another number added into a horrible database that everybody talks about and everybody feels sorry but it seems like that it's not enough that we are doing as a community we are all parents we are grandparents we are very proud of all these wonderful things we have seen today that I don't know if we are doing enough for the kids I care about my kids in my school and as I said before I'm pretty sure we all here hear about our kids
049but there are many things that have to happen to be able to prevent something horrible that happened and as I said it's preventable so unfortunately we have been trying to bring these concerns to the art and we have been advocating only with the Arts but but with the local police involve them because our school gets involved and we haven't been able to get into any agreement and the reason that I think is that is because it's so much bureaucracy behind and again we are forgetting our kids this room is full of kids and I know there are fonts are always Limited it's the word that we are but I also believe and we all believe that our kids in our small school are also important um unfortunately we don't have the big budgets that you
050will have in Valley Central but we are here because we need your help we understand that Valley Central has been allocated 6.3 million in Philadelphia as part of the American Rescue plan Act um for the budget that we all know it's public except for the 2022 and 2023 the Valley Center receives around 3 million 593 591 dollars and we all what we need for the remaining of this school year it's just a tiny fraction of that huge budget because it's really tiny for the rest of this year which is only 11 932 I know we in many ways for many eyes we are not really part of the school district but my child alessandrina is in third grade her child Scarlett and it's sitting in there it's also part of this Jack Sandra and I'm
051just mentioning like my daughter best friends but we are all here because we care we matter and I think it's just a sense of responsibility at the beginning when we started this we set for a when we were doing the pledge we set for a just Nation right and I think sometimes we think that we are different ways correct and I think we are all doing what it's right but sometimes I always wonder if we need to do a little bit more we need to be more human with our public politics approach we need to be more human and focus with what it really matters again our children your children my children the children in the community the kids that are playing in the playground because it's the spring it's here and everybody want to
052have fun the kids that you all want to create books all these kids could be a tragedy because your school is have security minus two have no security I honestly am happy that I drive by your schools and you have a beautiful secure system you drive by my school you don't have that and honestly every single day my parents in here I'm like okay it's gonna be okay it's gonna be okay but what if it's not I would just like to add that uh Most Precious Blood also houses Valley Central and PK classes they are eliminating six seventh and 8th grade next year out of most precious blood school so several of us have been tied to schools for our children my son is starting sixth grade in September he's the only one of my
053children right now schooling so I am looking at a school that is does have an armed security guard I'm still fighting for all the staff and the students that are going to be the most precious wife come September they have become family to us they are children we have been working on this fight since last May I have your email that you sent out on March 2nd talking about a threat to the school district and how there's heightened security and sros in all the schools I contacted John Ramos he has been fighting with us we contact the police department to beg them to please we had a half a day on March 3rd three hours of school for our children we beg them to please send them all to service and threaten the area of
054valley central sent out a letter letting us know there's going to be heightened security they didn't they can't do it they're not stacked enough so I called the dispatcher the next morning I said is there any way you can post somebody there I couldn't EMS my whole career I understand how posting those I said can you post an officer there if they get a call they can go and handle the fall in the area the dispatcher told me I know where you're coming from my daughter attends and he named a Valley Central Elementary School so but at least you have some sense of security your child has an SRO in school and he said I'll be honest with you I didn't send my daughter to school today yet we had to send our children to
055school every day with no security officer and we as families have offered to raise the money we were planning a galliform guard this summer at a winery for the apparents to raise money to provide an SRO and that was shot down by the Archdiocese they said we could not do I need fundraising outside what the Archdiocese has a lot of hours we have been trying to receive donations they will not allow it I the last email that they sent to us over spring break told us that they are sending us their prayers the lives are equally as important but they feel that money should come from the school mission so this is why we're back to you we started with without assemble school district and the Acting Superintendent before you came on board and he
056was very honest with us he said it came down to money he said it was brought up while they were discussing the SRO program for the other schools the most precious blood was on the table and it was removed because nobody wants to take responsibility for the money and as you can see by loading handed out tonight it doesn't cost that much to make sure our children's lives and our staff's lives are productive your OT that sees all of the children in these schools comes the most precious one and takes care of our children your PT your school nurse we share staff with the Valley Central School District public schools yet we don't allow the school district to give us a security officer we did get approval from the Archdiocese to have a security officer
057they're allowed to be armed so we have all those ducks in a row we're just meeting the funding and as Steph had mentioned it's just under twelve thousand dollars we're buying SRO workers which poll antenna from Orange County Sheriff's Department said he has readily available for us as soon as we can have he said if you get it tomorrow 70 part-time office send over to our store so we're looking for help from you guys at this point we're running out of time my husband keeps telling me why are you fighting so hard guys are coming towards the end of the year look what happened last night I don't want to be a mom who sends my son to school to get a phone call that was not coming home and I don't think any of
058you do so we're really asking you guys for help thank you thank you thank you let's use Tara Lafayette I'm going to stand behind the podium I'm six foot one so this is really cool for me good evening for those of you that don't know me my name is Carol of here the current president of the Middle School PTA president of the PTA Council and past president he's holding hand PTA little background of a teacher of 25 years in elementary middle school I have two children at the high school and have been involved in numerous BC activities Sports dance music over the years I spent many hours on fields cheering up athletes at recitals District events and fundraising in the community I pride myself in being a lifelong learner loving my community and being DC
059program we have done so many great things in the district and we continue to do so tonight I would like to speak about the topic of teaching where young Vikings how to read at Valley Central what does the reading instruction look like at BC I've spoken to many parents and teachers in the district that are concerned the way BC is teaching reading many of these people are not comfortable speaking out because they are concerned about retaliation against themselves or their children so tonight I'm here to speak for them I want the best for our children Reading Writing are Necessities in being productive in love everything we do in life involves reading and or writing from very basic to Advanced all students should be graduating high school being able to read on or above grade level
060are they I encourage you to look at the test scores and reading levels across the district I'm sure you could be shocked and how low they are Valley Central has been using a balanced literacy program for the last 18 years spontaneous infernal began with one resource book and a structure to the day that included a reading block a writing blog and a word study book many of the pieces of the writing and word study encourage Discovery for the students teachers retreated as professionals to make decisions Within These blocks at that time teachers continue to teach vibrational skills and Phonics that they had been teaching before the literacy collaborative started after looking through Recent research and understanding the science of reading multitude of Articles from local to National even in the New York Times this week
061I've read that many states have stopped using balanced literacy and immune to a more structured literacy approach the term science of reading is used to describe five components of effective reading instruction bonnets phonemic awareness vocabulary fluency and comprehension science reading has been supported and researched by neuroscientists when they were specifically looking at the brain through the lens of the MRI and how the brain to learn Valley Central is currently using and investing in an out-of-date program to teach our children conscious and Canal needs three cuming system does not align with the science and how the brain works and how children learn to read over time conscious and finale published many more books districts around the country including Valley Central purchase most of them is this the way that learning is good for our children um
062let's be honest there are students that are going to be good readers regardless of instruction we need to have a program that meets the needs of all our children and then provide enrichment to those students that need more why is this so concerning I became very concerned about our reading program when I listened to the podcast sold a story in this podcast Emily Hanford investigates an influential authors to promote the idea and the company that sells their work it's an expose on how educators can be can came to believe in something that isn't true and are now Reckoning with the consequences children harm money wasting an education system upended in the end the podcast was unfortunate what does it teach the three queuing model system says that skilled reading involved gaining meaning for print using
063three types of cues does it make sense word meaning in sentence context does it sound right grammatical and structure features does it look right visually the letters and sounds students are instructed through Francis and finale to use these strategies when they come across a word that is unknown in a level text conscious and canel program is glorified for Discovery reading and writing should not be Discovery but a time to teach explicitly the concepts to teach and create solid readers and writers teaching explicitly develop strong readers and writers will only develop successful readers and writers what are some facts around the country right now in the past two years as of July 28 2022 29 States and the District of Columbia have passed laws to implement new policies regarding evidence-based reading instruction it's for Success there
064is Murray sorry of the reading leave states that have adopted legislation around science aligned approaches to reading instruction have seen significant improvements in Reading achievement case in point Mississippi Mississippi was notoriously the worst achieving state in reading now they have climbed out of the bottom all together and our number one in growth in the National assessment of educational programs for the naeed how did they do it one vertical piece was comprehensive training of their K3 teachers both pre-service and in service in the science of reading the term science we're reading again is used to describe the five components of effective reading instruction phonics phonetic awareness vocabulary fluency and comprehension so what can BC do now I know ballet Central wants to provide the best instruction possible for our children we teachers are hard-working and diligent
065please give them the tools to help each student be good readers and writers I would encourage all of you to look into the most current research on teaching reading a simple Google search is extensive there are numerous articles from 2021 to the present one was published just two days ago in the New York Times a science of reading Revolt that is taking on the education establishment an excellent breed I know seven there are many programs that are based on the latest research just to name a few our foundations with wisdom and core knowledge please look at the monies that we are spending on Francis and its resources look at our reading Data before and after coding the podcast will Enlighten you in understanding how to teach and how not to teach reading to our children
066her supports are not great many students are struggling to become proficient can we continue as a district down the road to being sole restored we cannot continue using a program that does not produce strong vendors and writers I'm looking forward to seeing a great collaboration between our teachers community and parents to research best reading practices to help and support our children okay okay so we're gonna have to kind of pivot here a little bit at the last board meeting we have presented a superintendent's recommended budget at the time which was a 0.42 closed Tax Liberty increase uh budget the budget increase is 7.63 and it's a reminder this is a monthly due to State eight uh which would bring us to a proposed budget of 125 000 or 125 million 500 000. um then the
067board had asked if we considered a higher tax level what are some things um that the superintendent May recommend to use that so so um our goal here is tonight this is uh for her to have a conversation with you and we will come back on Thursday um for the board to approve the budget and uh we'll still meet our debt so that's where we're at right now real quick I just want to mention for the Student Center here in Milwaukee state but if you want to go Ellen's after signing okay so in thinking about some additional opportunities that the assistant can have to really enhance our programs and also to take them to the next level just a few comes to mind and so one of the things as a choice possible is due
068to covid in the last two years that have happened in reference Dakota is that we have an increase in aquatic gas until [Music] so thinking about how we can specifically work closely with the consultant to support the decrease of chronic absenteeism and for people who don't know kind of gas and TSM is when a child is absent percent of the school year so it is approximately 18 to 18 days and so thinking about how can it's important for children to come to school every single day we know that sometimes they get sick and unable to but we need to increase the amount of time children are attending school and that would support increasing attendance family engagement and Community Partnerships would you like me to go through all of them and then ask questions or ask
069questions after each you have a preference no no all right any questions on the first one so I'll just add one thing then consult him with not only work at the district level with this routine that would be created around chronic institution but also at the school levels but is that is that a software no it's a person a person who would would come in to work with us so that way that they can give our team strategies to better support what's already happening because what we're doing now will do a lot of work to support um trying to get some season but it's enough to be producing the address that we look like our attendance teachers physics [Music] on the engagement in Community Partnership having a position that could really increase enforce the family
070engagement and Community Partnership and that is in two ways of one and really thinking about learning opportunities for our parents that would be consistent across the district I know now our schools do different particular events that invite our parents in but really thinking about the needs of how parents can be closer Partners to us so that we can work together more closely than what we're doing and really develop a series of workshops I know that there was something previously that was I believe in American University at one time um but really thinking about that as well as other ways that we can increase family engagement and all levels of our community and then thinking about different Community Partnerships we have a number of Community Partnerships just want to make sure they're strengthened and continuing our
071Partnerships to support our students at these scene leadership development and change management is just oh I'm sorry so that would be a position that would be a position um leadership development is actually an opportunity professional learning to really support the leaders in our district and that would be sort of if you would think about coaching and actually different confidence opportunities that will be consistent among all of our leaders right now relatives have different opportunities that they take advantage of for professional learning the specifically focusing on change management um as we know the law has become extremely complex and we're moving very quickly and there has been a lot of change and so really uh focusing on the level of school leadership but also District leadership about really supporting their ability and building their capacity because
072we really do focus on teachers learning but we also need to focus on leaders learning as well um to really support their their capacity um at the same time so what we have today is they're not leadership as part of that like what do we use today for professional development we have a vendor that we have access to Virtual training or something do we have anything like that online so we use Frontline for them to sign up however for the teacher there's more standardized training that is a superintendent set for our Administration for our directors or for our principal there has not been in place like a you know a focus or a vision from from leadership as to what the training that the principles should be undertaking to become better leaders or the directors
073we have in the history of the central have had different people come in I don't know if some of you remember Connie cam we did have a systematic leadership program where we had to come in and we've had several other other different people that have come in to train us on different methods but we have not had a vision that event that's talking about for our administrative so what we have available today does not have leadership or change management oh no that's an option no they're there are different workshops that they are presented that come from all over from all the different BOCES that talk to leadership to talk to leadership in diversity Equity inclusion because there are opportunities for our administrators to engage in leadership training however it is not they don't have to
074or they it's sort of consistently [Music] secondary advisory curriculum development so that this is just exploratory um and just in the beginning word so we're looking at ways to strengthen a sense of belonging for students and so um speaking to this two secondary principles thinking about right now our children have a nine period a day and and they go from period to period to period and don't have any but I'm holding a gravity period I have period to have either an opportunity to have a small group what we used to call and I'm probably dating myself a homeowner right this is a really good thing about that opportunity or of advisory um they don't call it home anymore and so it might be an advisory so really thinking about it's not a full curriculum it's
075really just thinking about the opportunity is this an opportunity so children can have one caring and doubt that they know about I can go to Nissan every day because I see her for 20 minutes and I can ask her questions so I'm having a hard day just so that they could be grounded about General things and maybe other things that happen during that period And so it's really exploring whether or not that would be able to happen in the in this schedule and what it would look like and so that is something that is Roman exploratory Nation but really thinking about how can we strengthen a sense of belonging um looking at applying and culture data as far as secondary students especially questions on that something that you think that the students would need every
076day or but that's what we're gonna we're gonna play with you know it would be to explore and see if do they need it every day so three times a week and then how would that fit in a scale right it's not that we would if we went along with this one it won't be that we're going to start this you know we're not ready to just started committee at a secondary level to look into it this is three times a week the ones that what's needed and will help develop those can happen Red Rider um so we always can use extra funds and there are a lot of events out there and having a person that has dedicated to not only explore the brands to find out which means that we didn't qualify for
077but also write the grants and then also you know check in to see how they are being grant money is spent in the way that is intended because that's what that's also another piece and it's really important to do that so that you can get further funding and sometimes different funding because we were successful in a particular how great that we might possibly get and so it's really important to have someone dedicated to that so that you could have additional funds as we always can use addition s like outside have we considered using functions we do the processes past um for record retention grants that I'm aware of I'm not sure if there's been any other curriculum development side of things but um celebrity may be a great resource because they're doing all that research
078for everybody they represent right if something's possible I'm not very familiar with the services that they offer but there is companies out there too yeah I mean try to find out exactly um any other questions allocation for a data consultant so um from my understanding in the past we did have a consistent way way of using data data but we need to revisit them and straight through the way that we do that then that's just thinking about how we use data to really use live instruction how do we use data to support resources or not using resources really make decisions in a variety of ways and making sure that we do that consistently across the description and so having an allocation with a data consultant would help us establish those systems and also help us
079make sure that they're consistent and coherent across the district so it is for instruction first and foremost but then also really thinking about resources and the impact of what we're doing with our resources being beneficial is it is a will be observational Factor the losing our resources um also so that's the application for data Consulting that can come and help us to do some initial analysis and then also help us with developing services to do that so do you feel like if you have the data we're just not using it or you need to build the systems to get the data and energy it depends on certain cases yes to be able to continue you have to do that so she can eventually pay a lot which year so we had what is a debit
080driven decision to make and remember I was trying on that because questions is that there's a lot of work to do and you're right I mean I asked Teresa she go out into the shed and see we're out of closer because we were all trained in data driven decision making we were trained and found informative assessments and a lot of that were broken you know there's new teachers that have come in in the last since it went out and the certifications years so when we were trained in Colorado it was good for three years and then we never went back to community this right before covet we had a superintendent of the Year from upstate come down to train Us in professional learning communities and how to use data and then write deals here for
081one year and then quote ahead and so after code definitely necessarily starting with respect but it is that we have to say refresh you guys [Music] uh behavior intervention Specialists and that is as we as this past year and also Nationwide there has been an increase of traveling behaviors for students students in our buildings primarily in second grade level we see it more but it is also happening in elementary school where we could really support students in some regulating and really supporting them with making better choices and really having that time in between before they make a decision sometimes it's just a matter of time you respond to people it just took it they just counted to him just counted you know a little bit longer to really think about so this is an idea
082to be proactive really to be preventative as we look as I'm looking at some of the data around our suspensions like what can be done prior so that we can decrease the number of suspensions keep our children in schools as well and that would really help I believe support that piece of it what this would mean is that they would work very closely also with the guidance counselors but also with the administration and as well so that they can help identify and construct children in small groups and also work with the teachers around behavioral interventions that would support being programmed so right now we don't have a mechanism that when that happens right if they have some difficulty even though they go to the assistant superintendent it's around it's not being proactive in a sense
083that we're trying to get it before it escalates and that's what I'm that's what we need challenging Behavior to have a way to get to that and an assistant director for social emotional would support the fact that the behavior interventions and the staffs could possibly be under so that if you think of a student that's an assistance it's a student assistant counselors if you think about having a sort of an arch to really be proactive then you need somebody that is really supporting that in a way that they can also supervise and monitor and support people accountable about how is that all working in a way that that can be conducive to producing an impact and help us and so that would be fun learning the last one is cultural student Readiness that you heard
084to today two wonderful things that are happening in our school and that is really supporting the next level of getting children prepared when they leave feasting but I think then at a larger scale there's many other opportunities that were missing that and possibly um our children could have support in the preparation piece but also with additional internships and other things that would support me not only just our students but also parents in supporting the journey that they do have to support their children and leaving um to the next level and on College if you're ready this person to help support those efforts mostly and what's happening I have a question about that would that be a School counseling certification that would have a Physicians that division doesn't necessarily happen ing kids would come in or
085they'd have electives that could focus on things at the Anderson Club so that person will help us assign things that would be consistent in the building so for example when does the trial start right in college essay right so that would happen for every student district and how does that happen so would we develop some consistent practices that happen across the high school and even going back to the middle school so that that they're consistent matches happening conference um thank you all right wow don't be shy all right so we have to talk about um how we want to do this if you want to so let me ask this Brad just uh correctly from the 0.42 that we're at right now that is basically to cover the most capital projects essentially a zero percent
086tax level increase however it feels important that the BOCES project is covered under the tax level the taxpayers do have to pay for that project so if we get behind on that that is um so right now we're just covering those exactly so then we have to talk about entertaining the increase above the 0.42 which consensus so anybody want to start a presentation [Music] past in the middle of the Year probably has been one of the previous slides yet um last year I think we were at 0.7 1.76 and two years before that I think it was 2.86 both years to pull up uh look at this so while he's there what is the um test uh um so last year was one point so our average since 2013 has been 2.45 last year was
0871.76 the two years prior to that were identical at 2.86 and 2019 was a 1.05 2018 3.11 2017 2.69 2016 0.48 average is 2.45 since 2013. so yeah and then I found that the tax living is yeah so all these regardless to 1.92 such as um we made a few adjustments but we would if we added all these as presented 1.89 and then so and then keep in mind that we have the capital projects right one third I'm just round here okay length of 39 which really cost the taxpayer anything and another one for 19 or 20 million which would cost around two dollars right and so um as we normally do that I guess we call it the simply put or the house page regarding the budget so at these uh 0.42 if you
088just kind of stay in that middle column uh with the star column if uh your home had a full value of 400 000 and a 0.42 you'd be looking at a 30 increase for the year or two point five dollars that kind of puts it into perspective for you and that's it too right and that's with 42 million dollars of capital Improvement no this is just this would be just for the taxes okay so all right so let's um which kind of talk percentage here Keith what are your thoughts as far as like if you have a Target percentage that we would like to um Target percentage I am concerned increase but I feel like we would be smart as a district and bump it a little bit um I do not have a Target
089percentage I don't know what I want to go all the way definitely looking at some of those conditions I don't have like an exact number but I'm sure I do have my target percentage would be probably 1.42 I think I'd be considerable pumping a percentage that helps okay um I am going to agree with lucasa I think that um I think it's smart too and some of these programs I mean you know data is you can't make decisions if you don't have that um I think um since yeah I think I mean do we need a person or can it be spread out between existing Personnel I don't know it means that something guidance can help assist with um yeah to take you back on that one concern I have is if we add all
090these positions that's a lot yeah and I get you know and I have the same thoughts you to Gene about some of us be covered under around local guidance but I don't know the answer to that but that is from my points too and also just hearing just the district just taxpayers say we tend to be top heavy that that um that expression has been uh thrown around a couple times Etc I'm about at 1.2 so okay Diana I think all of these are great programs for future budgets um what I'm hearing is that a lot of them are in development um you take that year plan them out so that we can hit hit it with it you know in a future budget my number is 0.42 okay Sarah I'm lean towards Diana um
091I was happy with our low tax increase this year and I know without saving a lot of money on the table but I also think that some a year ago increases is important um I would consider I like the idea of grant funding I think that anyone we can do to try to get more money into the district to alleviate that it provide some taxpayer relief um is good and maybe we can find some grant funding for some of these other but I do think um this is very hard because I think they're all hugely important but I live trying to pass two capital projects also which are very important which have very little impact to the taxpayer I still think we should stay closer together all right so I would be willing to go
092to 1.2 only because I think some of these things are very important um also you know the return on the money uh you know raising that for next year because based on that four-year plan that Jason gave us we're gonna have a lot of ground to make up in four or five years so as much as I'm very concerned about capital projects getting through I I wouldn't think about 1.2 just because it brings us up a little bit so but having said that that we do not have consensus right any other discussion okay I don't know okay and so one point yeah okay so you guys want to comment at all okay so it sounds like we have 1.2 okay so and then so you'll look at that figure out dollars and then from this
093big list you're gonna have to decide what what is most important today so okay and I just want to confirm that all positions so I just wanted um as well consultant I mean it's not a long-term position so yes okay okay any other discussion on that um so Thursday would be the day we the board has to adopt about it so um and then just a quick look back at the calendar um so we have a discussion tonight on the 17th and uh it's on the 20th you'll drop a budget in May 8th is our budget hearing here at central office prior to the May 8th board meeting thanks all right we'll move on to new business and the first thing is the professional resolution Declaration of advisor High School athletic track two action we're
094going to get a motion to adapt yeah thank you second Diana all in favor post Sierra thank you uh take note review of curriculums available for the clothing and fashion three class um next is the approval of the apparel construction and fashion uh 1300 or something senior on the Altec can I get a motion to approve Sarah Angela all in favor thank you I'm sorry Diana all in favor aye opposed all right next uh is the consideration of candidates am I covering this or somebody else okay um so this is just a letter from the Valley Center PTA and they're ready on behalf to request the programs of sponsor of the candidate tonight and uh so that will be scheduled for Thursday May 4th at 7 P.M foreign Katie McKnight princess Fox pazonia and Barney
095Zipkin placement of the candidates names on the ballot will be determined by the drawing of lots this will take place tomorrow Tuesday April 18th at 9 00 a.m in the administration building Lobby candidates or their proxies are welcome to observe the drive thank you that's right that's all for our candidate anything else anybody would like to discuss correct thank you very much appreciate it getting a motion to adjourn units yeah thank you foreign
