005when it got cancelled because of the pandemic this year mrs carroll was the musical director of the little mermaid which was really enjoyed by everyone course was very a very difficult course to teach throughout the pandemic and this is perhaps mrs carroll's best achievement thus far students continued to sing remotely during the first year this year they sang while wearing masks and maintaining six feet of social distance after two years of persevering under these protocols students successfully performed to live audiences mrs carroll was able to keep students interested and motivated despite the inability to naturally sing in groups and finally mrs carroll was instrumental in renovating the chorus room to reflect more modern practices we're very happy with all of her accomplishments and that's why we had recommended her for tenure so congratulations and thank

017where she received tenure it was there that she first found her love of some of our most challenging students mrs fuhrman came to the phoenicia elementary school just prior to the pandemic in the fall of 2019. she joined the pbis team here at the building level and has provided home instruction to many students outside of the regular school day for the district she also taught in our summer academy in 2021 and plans to continue this summer throughout remote learning she worked hard to keep her students engaged and was never short on creative ideas or a funny hat or costume to keep their attention mrs fuhrman brings a strong work ethic and is often the first one in the building each morning she's a diligent advocate for all of her students making sure that they have
018what they need each and every day to be successful in the classroom her classroom is centered as a center for explore exploration and creativity each year we enjoy watching the world come to life as our students observes anything from chicks emerging from their eggs ladybugs hatching watching tadpoles tadpoles grow into frogs and even waiting for the praying mantis eggs to hatch she has also enjoyed teaming with other classes to work with students to write and send letters through programs such as love for the elderly this program was dedicated to providing letters of appreciation to elderly people who may not have family there to care for them most recently mrs furman she's worked she's worked to bring back the peer mediation program here at phoenicia while working with our trainers from the morningside program to help
019her restore to help support the restorative approach there's always more excitement she finished reading jan brett's the mitten an all-time favorite ukrainian folk folk tale and our first grader shared their experience by reaching out beyond our four walls to join with another first class off in holly new york and the classes met via google meets to discuss the stories um sorry mrs furman continues to help foster the true love of learning for her students she has consistently demonstrating her own level of learning having completed over 300 of 300 hours of professional development just since she joined us here at the anteora school focusing on curriculum development supporting our enl students reading interventions the use of technology and many more most recently she took on a project of our outside blacktop and as the pictures scroll
020there's some examples that she teamed with our pta to get some i'd call them black black top games painted very beautifully and our pta through the support of the library was able to do that for us so she arranged that with our students and the votes and made it helped bring it to fruition mrs fuhrman is an asset to our school and our learning community she is passionate about her students and works hard every day i look forward to working with her for many more years to come congratulations [Applause] thank you so much what a distinguished and accomplished group of uh educators you're recommending this year may i have a first to approve tenure trustee sherry second trustee story are there any questions or comments all those in favor that is unanimous thank you there's
021another uh thing that happens this time of year and that is where we get to recognize and honor our retirees so uh when i read your name you can come up and i would like to shake your hand and then we have a small token of our appreciation for you so first is uh donald uh donald clark our stores clerk [Applause] our math teacher wendy cohen [Applause] this is music great uh next is uh lou chartrand our technology teacher thank you uh teaching assistant tracy quick [Applause] thank you teaching assistant joanne strapoli [Applause] our secretary to the superintendent and district clerk who is not here fern amster [Applause] teaching assistant barbara krauss [Applause] secretary dianne kane [Applause] principal linda sella [Applause] custodial worker louise van luven [Applause] i know this guy's here paul schubert our

0235.01 um uh deputy sharon and sheriff figueroa of the ulster ulster county sheriff's office will discuss school resource officer collaboration between the district and ulster county thank you for joining us tonight chef figueroa and deputy sharon well thank you for having me this evening i think this is my first school board meeting uh under my tenure here so i'm very happy and honored uh to be here i just also want to explain the importance of what all of you do and i want to congratulate all the folks that were tenured this evening and all the folks that retired i don't know if you know this but when i took my oath of office it was my high school teacher that did my oath at the county office building and i did that for a reason
024i didn't want politicians uh my mom and dad had already passed and he had such an impact in my life that i thought it was important for him to know so i went to his house because he lives right in my same town and i invited him up and he did the honors and uh and teaching is such an important thing for our youth i don't know where i would be if it wasn't for my high school teacher mr john lennio so i'm honored uh to be here today i also want to thank the school board and the students and the folks of the anteora district for reaching out and and calling uh members of the legislature uh regarding the school resource officer program uh one of the things that i uh i'm not a
025big fan of is when people use a broad brush on whether it's a profession or a specific job title that we all have and do i believe like i did back 20 and 30 years ago that we're all responsible for our individual decisions that we make more importantly i believe in that people have a right to have their decisions and their opinions made and we should all be held accountable for anything that occurs uh collectively but also individually and i believe in the sro program as a latino american i understand the issues and the concepts of what happens in other areas my job though is to make sure that that does doesn't happen here our sro program is a lot different than most as you can all uh attest to that but i want to
026again thank everyone from the board that contacted the legislature regarding the sro program and how unique and different our sro program is compared uh to others so thank you i want to turn this over to to the sro so as i was sitting in the crowd i counted how many people were in here and there was 45 and out of the 45 i knew 43 people and i think that's a testament to what our program is is a community and i'm a part of your community and i work with each and every one of you every day i i joke around i just told the sheriff i said can we sit down in the back i did six miles on my feet today walking around the schools i'm kind of tired but i speak to
027anywhere from 500 600 people every day and it's about building relationships and we all know about the incident here at phoenicia a few weeks back and i was one of the first people here and one of the things that really struck me was when i was releasing classrooms later on some teachers came to me and said when we heard your voice we knew there was other police officers around when we heard your voice it just really comforted us and that's what our program is really about so thank you for your continuous support and uh i really appreciate it one last comment i was out in the hallway a few minutes ago i really have to come out here a little bit more often uh one of the tenured folks said to me you know i
028haven't seen you out this way you must work down at the other school district and i said yeah you're right i should come out here a little bit more often but i i introduced myself and she was embarrassed but that's i really appreciate everything that you do i love coming out here even when i was a young trooper when i started out in state police kingston um um i always preferred to work out in shantac and and olive it was just something that i enjoyed doing um but the future of what we do really is the collaborative effort that we all do as as teachers because in reality every single one of us teach somebody something every single day in our position in our positions and uh and i strive to do that and i'm
029also a student i'm a student of life i i learn things every single day like that lady today that young lady today that i really need to get out here a little bit more often but um i can't thank you for having us here today enough and your job as elected officials you make the determination for your own school district and it should be someone uh elected that does not represent you in another part of the county so i just want to underline the importance of your jobs and how you supported us with that vote in the legislature about a month ago so thank you yes ma'am thank you so much sheriff and we are all happy to support this program and deputy sharon i did want to take this opportunity and just to ask
030you if um in light of especially the event that happened here recently and knowing how isolated this area is if you would partner with me and maybe help me even in garnering additional support to try and address the lack of cell service here in this area when we have incidents like that where it's an emergency and people need to be in contact and there is just no way to do that it's it's ridiculous in this day and age that we don't have that ability i will most definitely i have in the past written letters uh both to our assembly and senate and our legislature to make sure that we get uh broadband cell phone service cell towers up in this area it's a public safety issue it most definitely is and i know that the
031those that are elected in public office are very aware of it i know senator hinchey speaks about it i know that the folks in the legislature constantly speak about it i can't stress the importance of that either that's a huge issue when you can't pick up the phone and call for help even for us it's a big issue when i was a young trooper in the 80s i had to talk to oneonta because kingston was unreachable and i had to use a payphone at the end of big indian to make the phone calls that i needed to to make communication in today's world is such a necessity um and i agree wholeheartedly then i will support any endeavors that you have in the school district whatever you need me to do you can count on
032me thank you so much uh trustee dejesus um so the um comptroller's office as emily and i had shared earlier today there's a broadband initiative that the comptroller's office has launched and there's a map of ulster county that people can go to it's on the ulster county comptroller's website and it's on the olive community page it's on town of shandacon town of olive helping hands for all of shandegan woodstock and you can access the map you can zoom in on your neighborhood find your house if it's in red then you can call the comptroller's office or follow the link and it will allow you to log your information or call and log the information so that we can get more broadband build out funding through the state then she will submit that updated map to
033the state so that we can access more funding i can send you the link in the morning and maybe you could even speak to the comptroller and because i think it is very important for this area and we received after the town of olive posted that this morning we probably received at least 10 phone calls right off the bat with people who live right in olive bridge even and don't have broadband don't have phone don't have cell service and it is a problem so and then on the uh my second point i just wanted to really thank officer sharon as a phoenicia parent i was really scared that day when i got the call at work and um and stella was very scared and the two things that she said um that made her feel
034better was that her teacher really kept her calm and that um seeing you made her feel better and that you can instill that kind of confidence in a scared child and thankfully it was a lot of misunderstanding and it was more than it was but to see your child that afraid and that they can't verbalize or talk about it until the end of the day um it's scary you know and it's scary that this happens to children unfortunately it's scary that it happens at churches or supermarkets but that you are able to represent that to our students and staff and instill a sense of um calm and um security without being um over the top about it it's it's just really reassuring that when i was told that you were here i i instantly felt
035a little bit of my guard go down and like okay i think things are going to be okay because tom is there and i just really wanted to thank you i'm i've always been a huge fan of the program and always been a huge fan of officer tom so thank you very much i really appreciate it thank you thank you very much i really appreciate that one last point about that collaboration relationship that our sros have it really is important in today's world to understand the individual aspects of what a tommy sharon brings to a program like this and it's really up to all of you to highlight that and you did that when we needed help and again i i thank you and i also want to add the the comptroller and the county
036executive are well aware of the issues and they do also support um you know getting cell phone service up here so parents can know what's going on when something happens so thank you uh student representative noelle crandall on behalf of student government the student body and speaking for myself i do just want to extend a very large thank you i think your role at ontiara is undoubtedly very critical and you ensure safety in a lot of students hearts as well as teachers and faculty and i just want to say thank you for providing such a safe experience for me as well as all of the student body thank you trusty story thank you um i want to say thank you for continuing to partnership with us for this sro program um i have seen deputy
037tom firsthand in the community interacting with our students on his time off he's they don't just see him in uniform they see him in the public and they enjoy his presence and i think it's something that deputy tom is a very very special sro and i think that's one of the reasons why this program has worked so well in our district if you could keep us up to date when this goes before i think it's the ways and means committee when they start discussing this because i will gladly go and speak in public to support this you know at the committee levels and personally invite the legislators that question this to our buildings and show them what this does so they can interact with our students and see firsthand i think that's i think that
038could be beneficial for everybody because you have to see this firsthand action and then you you get a lot of take away from it in the past we've um partnered with our local pds like shendeik and tana woodstock used to have fobs to our buildings i don't know if they were to police cars or what do they still you know do we still partnership like that i think that's more of a question for tommy so uh actually mr reimer and i've been working on that we've actually collected some back because um they kind of got mismatched and we're going to be redistributing them next school year to all the town pds they do have them we're just uh there's been some changes with our system and uh actually mr reimer and i over the last
039two weeks have been spearheading it so yes great that's because i know that it's something that the kids also enjoyed too it was you know we only have one sro and we have a huge district and just to let you know i work with all those town pds matter of fact i stopped by the town of woodstock today to see those guys because they they inform me stuff i inform them stuff we just keep in constant contact i invite them anytime you know please drive around the building go in say hi go out at recess to all of our town pd's and we're lucky in this district because we do have a town pd in all of our buildings so um officer george for the shandacon police everyone at venetian knows him in the mornings
040when i can't be here because i can't be everywhere at once and uh he makes a huge presence here too and miss valo will attest to that as well yeah they support us greatly all the local pds and we couldn't do that if they weren't here so thank you for everything i just wanted to let you know this is an annual approval that has to go through the county legislature it starts at the law enforcement public safety committee then it goes to the ways and means before it goes to the entire legislature and yes i did invite them to come up to the school district and have the conversations with the elected school board as well as members of the faculty and students and of course i also want to thank the student body for
041what they did with that petition thank you very much trusty sherry um i just wanted to thank both of you for making the time tonight to be here i know that um sheriff figueroa is very busy this time of year particularly and i really appreciate you both coming out and speaking to us and you know i think that our sro program um really is a shining light in the district and i would love to see it replicated in other districts and other places because i don't think that most people understand the sro job the way that that we have it here in ontario and i think when people hear sro they have a different understanding of what actually is happening and i credit you with that sheriff agro because i think you've done a phenomenal
042job in making sure that you've got the right people in the right districts and i would love to see this program replicated because i think it's terrific and i can't imagine sending my kids to school without knowing that officer tom is there and i was speaking to a student a couple weeks ago not my own and we were talking about yvaldi and one of the things that that child said to me was that i kind of understand what happened there and i also know that officer tom would never let that happen here he would never stand outside the building while we got hurt and that to me kind of said it all because their trust was completely in what we need them to have trust in and that they're safe in the school building to
043the best of our ability that they can be safe here and it's it's a hard thing as a parent to send your kids to school after something like that but i definitely rest easier knowing that tom is paying attention and that he's here and that he's working with the districts around and that he's working with the other police officers to make sure that our kids are safe so thank you both i just want to thank you for your continued partnership and i just acknowledge you for being self-reforming and evolving all the time it's been wonderful to work with you we look forward to partnering with you in the future and i was in downtown norfolk a couple weeks ago and i met a guy on a bicycle and i was he he had a job
044clearly working for the city of norfolk and i said well are you a cop he's like no no i have a different job and i was like what's your job he says i'm just here to make sure everybody feels respected and has a good time and i think of your department in that way too so thank you for making our students feel respected i don't think there will be a a better endorsement for your program than you've heard here tonight so thank you we'll look forward to being in touch with you and don't be a stranger thank you very much and just one quick side note the teacher just gave tenure her husband said i cannot believe you called the sheriff a school resource officer i'm never going to let you live that down she's
045like it's never too late it's just a little demotion all right thank you enjoy the rest of your evening we appreciate it uh principal fallow uh it is your turn to welcome the board though we've been here for for a while so thank you it's been an eventful evening already but it's also been an exciting school year since i was last able to talk to you we've enjoyed things like the pta spring dance celebrated teacher appreciation week enjoyed the scholastic book fair the list really goes on and on staff has been busy completing professional development right up till the very end literally just days ago they've been working on teachers college reading and writing phonics our committee members working hard to help us choose a new math program by doing demo lessons here in the
046building and collecting feedback from our staff to bring back from the committee and report cards were almost wrapped up our second graders enjoyed trips to the trevor teaching zoo while our first grade traveled to forsyth park in kingston while many of our classes are now enjoying end of the year walking trips up to the ice cream station just to get a nice little ice cream cone with their classmates a huge thank you to mrs ms payette our art teacher for hosting an art show featuring our students work it was an amazing success the students work was professionally displayed outside after school and also to celebrate our students their work was also displayed about a month ago for the phoenicia library she was quite overwhelmed just to describe the moment in time when the students re-entered
047the building after school had dismissed they were actually cheering as they came down the hallway saying arch and she just was was totally taken back and it was a joy to see families coming and going really for a couple of hours um and enjoying you know each other on the fields and and seeing the kids work we celebrated our kindergarten students on june 3rd in the labyrinth where they treated us to their singing demonstrating their hard work it was such a treat for family and friends we were keeping our fingers crossed there was a couple little drops but mother nature held off for us we welcomed our incoming kindergarten parents for orientation just last week and we had a wonderful turnout parents heard about the nuts and bolts of kindergarten and they were able to
048visit the classrooms meet each other spend some time talking and meeting the kindergarten teachers so it was really a fun night on flag day she's she's gone now but we did as a building honor miss tracy quick who for a long time has organized our flag day festivities we crowned her the phoenicia elementary poppy queen in honor of her long term long time work to help bring our school and community together through the flag day even though we were not able to open it up this year she has reassured me that she is passing the baton on and traditions will continue and tonight we did congratulate her on her retirement we still have a busy remainder of the week we will celebrate our third graders tomorrow evening at 5 30. weather permitting will be outside
049but if not we're going to pull things under the tent and we have our cafeteria here for as an alternative so we'll be celebrating our our third graders moving on we have field day planned for our students on thursday again rain date for a friday uh mr burkha mr burkhart has this ready to go our pta is providing water and watermelon for our players as well as some extra treats actually for our law enforcement to show our immense gratitude for their swift response during our lockdown we wanted our local law enforcement to know how grateful we are and to give them the opportunity to stop by over the course of the morning to meet the kids and have our students meet those to know of those who came so quickly and to make sure we
050were safe we did get to talk about that just moments ago and i anybody i've spoken to it was overwhelming the amount of support we had here oh i would say almost instantaneously i know there were other things going on but by the time tom got here he advised me there were about 30 vehicles law enforcement vehicles in our immediate area i knew our school was safe and it's that relationship i know i'm reiterating but i can't say it enough so we have extended that invitation through tom to our local law enforcement to join us if they're able to come by kick a kickball see the kids and just again a thank you and a presence the kids already have some signs up in the front of the building and again i i did mention
051earlier the our new artwork on our back blacktop where the kids can play it's you've probably spotted the colors up there somewhere along the line but again that's a huge thank you to our pta who supported that as well as liz potter at the library who supported the pta and that as well so again community pieces tight they're tight so thank you for being here tonight and supporting our students and have a wonderful night thank you so much uh principal fallow are there any questions for the principal enjoy your summer uh superintendent district oh no sorry i'm sorry uh the board of education here by accepts the minutes of june 2nd 2022 june 7 2022 and june 8 2022 uh board meetings may i have a first trustee bishop second trustee story are there any
052questions or comments all those in favor that's unanimous superintendent district news well good evening it's kind of sad so um i know that i have let the board know but just in case anyone is watching at home we have discovered that our school calendar for the next school year needs to be revised it appears that new year's day falling on a sunday is not observed in our school calendar currently the holiday needs to be observed on monday january 2nd and this was just i think a function of it falling on a sunday everyone had reviewed the calendar and it was approved but we do need to observe new year's day on january 2nd so we're going to lose a day in session and we need to find a day somewhere else in the calendar to
053make that up it's kind of a tight calendar we now as of this year are recognizing juneteenth which is wonderful and very appropriate it adds an additional day not in session and in conjunction with that we have increased the work year for our ota members so that added another constraint so we need to find a day to make that up right now it looks like that may end up being the day before thanksgiving and that's just kind of a function of the way the calendar is working but we're still very much in conversation with the ota leadership and trying to see if there are any other creative solutions that we can find i do anticipate we will bring the revised calendar to the board at the riord meeting so that we can have it in
054place um the bennett graduation is coming up tomorrow but unfortunately it was supposed to be outside and given the forecast as principal fallow just mentioned it's a little too risky to be holding it outside and so it is being moved into the auditorium at the middle high school so i'm sure it will be lovely and i know the students were a practicing today middle school moving up ceremony was last week and as usual it went flawlessly and the guest speaker was our valedictorian joey driscoll she was she's just a really amazing speaker and she shared some really valuable guidance with the freshmen i believe that her speech at graduation on friday is going to touch on some of what she shared with the students so i won't spoil it but i hope everyone comes to
055graduation and can hear her speech our athletic awards were held on june 7th it is truly amazing how many of our students are accomplished student athletes as well as scholar athletes the awards ceremony was very well attended ryan nacarado our director of athletics p.e and health did a really great job and his secretary leah smith is always instrumental in making sure the event is a success i do have a program here in case anyone's interested in looking at it the senior scholarship ceremony was last week as well and as usual this community has been incredibly generous and awarded our seniors about 300 000 in scholarship awards our students are so fortunate to have such an amazing show of support as they embark on the next chapter in their journey and while the board recognizes and
056thanks all of the donors at each meeting i did want to just reiterate that and thank the community again i also brought that program tonight if any trustee who was unable to attend would like to look at it so our communication survey we have 85 responses as of today so we will send out another reminder asking people to take the survey uh this week and one more next week and then once the survey closes we will compile all the results and bring that back to you i did want to just mention our trustees who are leaving us it's very sad um both of you have been truly valued members of this team you have devoted literally countless hours serving the ontario school district and you will both be greatly missed and undoubtedly called upon to
057serve on committees in the future now that you will have [Laughter] potentially some free time um so just in closing we are wrapping up the school year we have just a few short days left graduation uh is always an incredible event and one that is inspiring every year the students of ontario never cease to amaze me and every single employee is responsible for providing the wonderful education that these young people receive and i hope that we see everyone there to join in the celebration because it's always just incredibly fantastic thank you so much superintendent mclaren are there any questions for the superintendent uh board district news any news from trustees uh trustee dejesus i just wanted to reiterate the um the broadband maps for the district this is only being done in certain towns across
058the county that have issues with broadband um shandagan west hurley olive and um and woodstock fall into these areas of issue and if parents who may be watching are having issues getting broadband we we've gotten complaints from people who have said their neighbor down the street or next door may have a poll that is connected for service but they are being quoted anywhere from on the low end thirty eight hundred dollars to on the high end twenty two thousand dollars just to get hooked up for broadband um one area of interest is right on 28 um between phoenicia diner and the rod and gun club and they were quoted an astronomical figure just to get signed up for um broadband so if there are parents in the district who are watching and you have issues
059you can't you can't make phone calls you can't get any kind of internet service whatsoever i was also told that um one of the dish servers are very backed up and they're not signing people up right now so if you fall into one of these categories you're in a red zone please definitely log on to the comptroller's website you can also find the information on the controllers of facebook uh town of shandacon town of olive and also the library here in phoenicia has a map hanging up that you can go and check if you don't have capability online so it's just very important that way we can get the broadband funding build out great thank you for that and uh when we get to new business i'm going to maybe suggest that the legislative action
060committee work with the superintendent on this and one other issue um yes trustee sherry i wanted to just piggyback on what daphne was saying the town of woodstock does have a map in the town clerk's office and i believe that that the comptroller was directing them towards a digitized version so that they could share it so there is one for the town of woodstock as well and um i did message briefly with the comptroller about the possibility of working with the superintendent to shout point this information out to the community to make sure that everyone is aware that the comptroller's office is doing this and that they have access to the maps in a digital form so they can log on and check their their service possibilities um i think it's a huge issue and
061i think it's a huge issue for the district because of what we went through for the last two and a half years i think it really identified that as as a real problem for our students so i just wanted to mention that and i also wanted to mention that for families who received what would have looked like a medicaid card sometime in the last year a lot of families didn't know what that was for um and i don't you know not to criticize new york state because i think the program is excellent but i don't think the state did a great job of kind of telling what parents it was you know telling parents what it was for a lot of people received them and had threw them in the garbage because they had no
062idea why they were getting them and assumed it was a mistake if you have one they were loaded with money for the summer to offset food costs for children who are home it's part of the coveted funding that new york state did last year for children who were doing remote learning and did not have access to free lunch so the benefits that are on the card currently are somewhat small compared to what people would have received you know sometime in this in the early fall but there is money there and anybody who has one of those cards it does not mean you have medicaid it doesn't mean that you are obligated to anything it doesn't mean you're in the system in any way it just means that you have a child who is enrolled in
063the district every child this year qualified for free lunch and it is a financial benefit for families to help them get through the summer great trustee wallace well uh first of all i just want to say thank you to um the board um i'm thrilled to be here um i'll just add that those folks who had thrown away the card uh should be able to it's a bit arcane but there is a process to get a new one and it it it it it's it's work but uh there there you know there is a you know a phone number that uh should be available and if you give a certain amount of information you'll be able to potentially get one resent to you i think that's interesting because i assume that there was a process
064but some i tried to help someone with that process they had a card for one of their children but not the card for the other because they had thrown it away and when we called the number on the back of the other child's card it would only give information about that child so i haven't quite figured it out yet so if you see something please send me an email and i'll get it out there so may i make a suggestion that uh when we find when we track that information down that we make it available on our website or send it out somehow and let people know yep i think a lot of families threw those cards out um yeah i've talked to a lot of people who said well i thought it was a
065mistake um i don't want to qualify for medicaid i don't qualify for food stamps i didn't know why they sent it to me i didn't want my child in the system and they had no idea that they were throwing away in some cases over a thousand dollars worth of food benefits that they could use anywhere really um so if if we have a way of figuring out how people replace lost cards and we can get it out there i would be happy to to help with that i haven't figured it out yet though trustee dejesus on on that note i know there's um there's a limited window so if people do get that card i believe they need to use it within 27 weeks or something like that so but if they've if they've thrown
066it out don't put off getting the card because it's going to run out even if you get a replacement it's going to run out so whatever we need to do to make that a priority to get that information um accessible to our families fantastic is there any other board district news professor crandall hi so recently in student government we held our elections for the upcoming school year in which i'm happy to say i was re-elected as the student board rep and excited to be joining you all again next year we also had an association of student government meeting in which possible initiatives as well as persisting initiatives were discussed throughout the high school finals week is underway and i can say confidently that many students are looking forward to this upcoming break speaking personally i
067just want to say thank you to each of you for so warmly inviting me to each of these meetings and for providing this wonderful opportunity it's such a special experience and i'm so lucky to have had it and so lucky to have it next year again thank you you are so welcome noel and we'll look forward to having you back next year when um trustee wallace was asking me about the board he asked you know what was your biggest victory and biggest loss and for sure the biggest victory has been watching student government grow so thank you uh thank you for taking that on and we'll just we'll keep our eyes peeled next year okay and in the meantime enjoy your summer and don't think about any of this trusty sherry so miss crondell i
068have a question for you um i understand it from someone in student government that uh they were really happy that you were willing to be re-elected but that there had to be a little bit of a rule change in order for that to happen and one question i have for you that that i don't want you to answer right now but something to think about is how can we help how can the adults help motivate the students to feel comfortable doing the job that you're doing now because it didn't sound like people were really dying to do it and i kind of get it but it's also super important so i just want to kind of have a conversation next year and in terms of like planning for your graduation and you're moving on to
069make sure that there's somebody willing to take your seat and how we can work together to support you and motivating somebody to do that and and having them understand how important your job is perfect that was a commentless comment we'll look forward to hearing more about that um any other questions for noel great um uh the board will acknowledge the public be heard comments from the last meeting uh rick wolf spoke uh amanda it doesn't look like we have anybody tonight um discussion and possible action item 12.01 the board of education hereby abolishes the 1.0 full-time automotive mechanic position to create the 1.0 full-time automotive mechanic helper position may i have a first trustee bishop second trustee wallace are there any questions or comments all those in favor that is unanimous the superintendent recommends acceptance
070of donations totaling seven thousand four hundred and eighty one dollars cash from various donors as scholarship awards for the graduating class of 2022 the superintendent recommends approval of the following following donations two hundred dollars from linda and ralph bonavist five hundred dollars from spotted dog ventures llc fourteen hundred dollars from karen and paul warzinski i hope i got that name right if not please forgive me 250 dollars from southside rod and gun 250 from pika moose trading limited from merrell susan millam two hundred dollars from joe and kim di giovanni thirty one dollars from sarah turk two hundred dollars from valerie stewart one hundred dollars from rebecca jocelyn eleven hundred dollars from patrick and janine burkhardt one thousand dollars from pascal and regina purpura fifty dollars from lisa casey one hundred dollars from anne gillen
071150 from the ladies auxiliary olive fire department fifty dollars from lance edelman fifty dollars from jennifer uh jennifer o'connor one hundred and fifty dollars from darlene julie and kyle biesmer two hundred dollars from the woodstock volunteers day committee two 200 from the uh ocsd high school staff members from the eca spanish club 100 from the eca french club 250 from the eca high school yearbook club 300 from sarah turk and 300 from the woodstock community closet our deep gratitude to all of you may i have a first trustee dejesus second trustee story are there any questions or comments all those in favor that's unanimous item 12.03 the board of education approves the revised inter-municipal agreement with the kingston city school district for girls swimming and authorizes the superintendent to sign such agreement this was a
072date correction um may i have a first trustee dejesus second trustee bishop are there questions or comments all those in favor that's unanimous be it hereby resolved on recommendation by the superintendent of schools that the board of education of the ontario central school district authorizes and directs the funding if available of district reserves as presented in the june 2022 reserve plan as of june 30 2022 may i have a first trustee bishop second trustee story questions all those in favor that is unanimous uh the board of education hereby approves the contract extension for dr donald gottlieb our interim uh superintendent for business may i have a first trustee bishop and second trustee story are there any questions or comments our appreciation to dr gottlieb for for sticking around as we need him all those in
073favor that's unanimous all right discussion of a creation of a board newsletter oh wait there's one other thing we were inching our way to your to your retirement we're trying to go a few more hours um the board of education hereby approves the contract for monica leclair to be the assistant superintendent for business may i have a first everybody trustee bishop second trustee dejesus uh questions or comments trusty story thank you we are so grateful to welcome you back and thank you for for considering us your home we consider it your home too you're welcome great [Laughter] um all those in favor that's unanimous uh item 12.07 discussion of the creation of a board newsletter so first of all i'm absolutely thrilled uh we had a very busy year and the communications survey was a
074bit of a lift to get it done and so thank you to all the trustees and the superintendent and and the interim superintendent before you and our staff in helping us uh facilitate this in in sort of coming up with the questions and in sort of noticing some of the public comment over the past year frequently people would come to us or uh and say this is the first i'm hearing of this and these were things that we had discussed sometimes you know dozens of times at board meetings and so while we'll get a lot of information from our communications survey i think it is clear that uh it would be a a good idea to discuss the possibility of a board newsletter um and the superintendent has done this as a habit for for
075staff over over the years and so i i just wanted to open the discussion about that and and see if anybody had any thoughts about it trustee bishop yes when uh when we met last uh we it was uh trustee salem and superintendent mclaren and me and uh we we were discussing how i thought the uh the notes that superintendent mclaren sent out to i think all i don't know if it was all contacts uh yeah after each board meeting were so useful and if you weren't able to attend a board meeting or if you you know didn't have an opportunity to read the agenda on board docs you could receive that email from her which was a summary of what was discussed in the board meeting and that's sort of i think what we
076were looking at uh in terms of being able to provide a newsletter uh you know to the community so that people you know not not just uh have an opportunity to see it or hear it if they take that opportunity and sometimes people don't have time for that but to receive something in writing uh you know probably through an email or some other way would be valuable to those folks who like getting their information in that way agreed and i think you know the biggest part of the survey that went out one of the big components of it is that it will tell us how people most like to receive information so with that part in focus i think uh trustee wallace is a journalist uh everybody on this board is a good writer and
077i know we have two other incoming trustees who are also have communication as part of their background and so i believe that we have the skill uh to um sort of partner with the superintendent to kind of craft something that is uh short enough for people to read but informative enough for them to know what's going on and then in our discussion i really liked the idea of doing it collaboratively between the board and myself because sometimes i would feel as if i were trying to speak for the board without actually trying to speak for the board i was trying to represent the board's intentions but sometimes it it made me feel like i would rather have the board really lay out their intentions themselves and i could just communicate it so i was always
078sort of walking a fine line of informing and not putting my own opinions in so i would like to do it collaboratively with a board representative so that it was really a true um depiction of where the board was headed and what the priorities were excellent i think that's an excellent idea um anybody else trustee wallace a couple of questions come to mind um what do we and i assume this will be actually clearer once you have the survey back but for those who may not have access to broadband or even some who may not have access to email do we then need to do a printed version of it or is there maybe a best of uh so to speak that would be done on a quarterly basis maybe a print edition and i'm
079happy to you know lend an editorial and to you know taking a first draft from a reporter um and uh and gladly you know working on that fantastic those are great questions and i think we'll sort of solve the physical distribution part of it that's always tricky uh because uh there are two parts of communication we can put something in a backpack people have to read it and i will mention uh that i think it is one of the goals of this uh is that it it offers information it also encourages accountability from the public right so we are giving you the information and uh and and we will remind you that we gave you that information um and once we all develop the habit of communicating uh back and forth properly i i'm hoping
080that uh we will hear a little bit less frequently things like this is the first i'm hearing of that um trusty sherry i think david's idea is a good one i i i think we have a newsletter that goes out quarterly currently so maybe we could provide some kind of a best of or a synopsis in each one of those newsletters um you know just a section of like board news or you know a report from the board of education and with kind of the highlights of whatever was happening in the previous three months and i also wanted to ask you superintendent mclaren if you could think about logistically how you think this works best for you because it can be difficult to wrangle seven of us to get you a yes or no and
081i want this to be easy and efficient so whether it's one representative from the board or the communications committee i think we could agree that either one if we choose a representative to work with you on that or if we choose the communications committee but really what would be best for you um and whichever way we go we need to agree all of us that we will respond to superintendent mclaren efficiently so that she can get the board news out without having to wait for all seven of us to weigh in trustee wallace were you going to add something to that just just to educate me on the current word the the newsletter that you send out now is electronic or is it also print its print to every taxpayer in the district every home
082uh ever every resident so adding either a page or a spread um to that with a section called you know from your board i don't know if that might be the way to ideally i'd love to see that as well as an electronic communication weekly for parents who do use their email um or by monthly sorry each time we have a board meeting so that um so that there is a consistent flow of regular information because that seems to be a lot of the feedback that we're getting and then to also have the updates going into the newsletter i think would be ideal unless anyone disagrees i agree completely yeah trusty story i think a lot of it's going to do with what's the responses back from the survey so i you know in practice
083the thought of this is all good but i'd want to know what the people say that's that's most what we're you know we really we can talk about this all we want but it's what the people want and we don't have the results of our survey yet so that's what i think the most important i mean i think i think the people have spoken and said that what they absolutely want is more communication and i agree with you that we won't know until we get the results from the survey um how they prefer to have it but i don't i don't actually think it's an issue to over communicate um you know i'm happy to get them all the information and and in the ways that they want it so we can post a link
084if they say they use facebook more if they say that they prefer email if they say they prefer text we can always post a link there to the board newsletter but i think that i i would really like us to start communicating more i'm i'm really um i feel badly that the community does not feel as if we are communicating enough with them so i'd like to address that more than anything may i suggest that we uh we don't know how to distribute it yet um until we wait for this but may i suggest that we somehow pilot it this week uh we're you're going to do your update anyway and maybe we can uh send a board representative um may i suggest that we initiate uh trustee wallace in this process and and and
085perhaps uh trustee bishop who has been uh in in the communications committee so may i suggest that we just sort of pilot at least the creation of it this way and then we'll uh you can distribute it to your contacts as as you normally would and we'll we'll uh i think the communications survey closes uh closing it at the end of next week right so you all can figure that out without me is there anything else on the board newsletter i just want to thank uh john rimer for all of his support in in this work and the the survey he kind of whipped it up while we were speaking at the last board meeting and um you know really he's a great asset to the district yes thank you this communication survey is going
086to triple your workload too um thank you for acknowledging that anything else on this topic all right then um the board hereby approves item agenda items 13.02 to 13.19 may i have a first trustee bishop second trustee story are there any questions or comments yes superintendent mclaren i would just really like to take a moment and recognize that we are granting tenure to missile claire and when i looked back at it i realized that when she was appointed first we did a four-year probation not having clarification from the state that an administrator who had previously been granted tenure really only needs a three-year probation so she has actually served three years and 11 months already so so it's well deserved much like those other candidates that we saw earlier this evening who were awarded tenure
087ms claire has really wonderful evaluations in her file that i have written and she was instrumental in really bringing us forward uh ms leclair has just an incredible passion for this district and dedication and work ethic and i'm thrilled to have her back and i'm thrilled to recommend that she be granted tenure and it is very well deserved congratulations mrs sheriff figaro will come around and remove your ankle bracelet at some point in the coming weeks are there any other questions or comments i've reviewed the schedule you and it appears to be in order thank you um anything else all those uh did i have a first oh forgive me this one this one i'm going to abstain just because i haven't had a chance to review it i'm new that doesn't mean i wouldn't
088have probably said yes but i'm just going to abstain on this one thank you for that i think that is the smart choice um did i get a first and second yet i did okay all those in favor opposed abstain that is four one two three four five yay one abstain um all right uh the board of education hereby approves item 1402 may i have a first trustee bishop second trustee story are there questions or comments all those in favor uh opposed abstain perfect thank you very much that's four zero one five zero one i'm so used to not having a sixth trustee it's freaky is there any old business to discuss trusty story um i brought this up in the past but we'll br i'll bring it up again so we can get it
089set up for when our new board is the board having an email address that all it goes to just us so when we communicate within each other we turn around and we get um the email so we can send it so it doesn't automatically get sent out to all or so it does get sent out to our google accounts so like we currently have the on tour board of ed email that also goes to the district clerk i'm talking about one email just for the board members because i know there's times when people try to send emails and they leave trustees off i know i've bit numerous times i've left or have been left off of emails this when we get a foil request it's all sent into our our gmail or it's all in
090our ontario account so one that we can all communicate and it's setting up the our next board for best practices okay um i think that that is so it is an additional on to our boe address that just uh circumvents the clerk so it's for internal communication for the internal board members to send it and it's also for superintendent mclaren to also send us uh information because everything will be on our server that's that's the most important thing i think the only thing that i would want to make sure is that the email that remains on the website is the one that includes amanda um yes because because she needs to get all of the communication from the community to make sure that that we are on top of it and then you're talking about
091setting up a separate email that would be just confidential information shared between the superintendent and the confidential information emails that's what i meant yeah emails that we do not want shared with the district clerk is what you're saying between us yes right so it's emails that instead of sending it to our gmail accounts we're sending it to an onto your account for just the board members but that would also forward to our gmail accounts just to be clear yes but i would not be on it because it's meant just for internal board communication but if i wanted to send a communication to just the board i would use that email right correct okay yeah we're still keeping the public one up so the public gets the district clerk this is just a second email it's
092already done entree new ontario.k12.ny.us that's french sorry um going out in style trustee bishop um just uh while we're on the subject uh for me the the problem of the antiora boe email going to spam is not a problem anymore i don't know what what it was that fixed that but uh uh email seems to be working properly now great any other old business new business new business um i i do have one piece of new business so for the legislative action committee i think it is a fantastic idea to uh work uh towards um better coverage in our district and that is a legislative process but i also i i have not had a chance to review it yet but i did have a conversation with our our former trustee uh ratcliffe who's now
093a council person in woodstock about their housing um uh task force's report i haven't had a chance to read it but he did sort of summarize it for me and he i shared my thoughts which he said he would share and i asked him not to share it because it was not the board's thoughts but i i would say that for me uh one of the issues that i believe we face as a district is having housing affordable housing for families in our district so i believe that it would be healthy for the board and the legislative action committee to craft a statement or a strategy um that we can share with the town boards the many town boards in our district uh sort of um encouraging them to consider the the impact of uh
094scarcity of housing on our school district um and so i i would like to just put that on our agenda uh as as part of our legislative action agenda trustee story you're making lots of plans for everybody who's going to still be sitting on this board but you're not going to be here anymore trustee sally i still got what's today's date the 20 21st i still got nine days left a lot of this stuff can just get done i have new names for each of our buildings too that i'm gonna propose you're laughing like that's a joke um no but i yes and and so while we're on the subject i just want to thank you you guys have been a tremendous source of joy and support sometimes other things but it's been wonderful serving
095this community and i'm not going away i just won't be sitting here but you can definitely count on me for help with issues like that so available yeah i'll be using that microphone i actually have some planned entertainment for you guys little three minute uh routines that i've worked out um and i think it's uh do the rules about uh language apply to public be heard too because i think no one has mentioned that i've gone seven years without dropping the bomb here on the dais and i think that's um no thank you all so much it's it's actually been a pleasure uh and i'm gonna i'm gonna miss working with you in this way but i'll be working in other ways um is there any other new business trustee sherry wondering if we can
096go over the um process for new substitutes coming into the building to make sure that especially here in phoenicia that as part of their you know whatever happens when they first walk in the door kind of thing that they have access to the wi-fi password um to make sure that if they do need to be in communication outside of their classroom that they can be superintendent so i haven't had a chance to follow up but i believe i did send an email last week mentioning that to our tech director he's going to go check his email now after meeting with the pta leadership they brought that up and i also in discussion with the pta leadership thought because i know that we now allow town softball to use the field here so i have also
097asked our director of facilities if it's possible to look into having a phone similar to the one that we had placed at the emerson fields a few years ago outside this building so that on a day say a saturday afternoon if there's a softball game happening and nobody has cell service and nobody has access to the building there would maybe be a way to make an emergency call anything else trustee bishop i wanted to i i don't know i i asked uh trusty's story earlier but i'm i'm not sure when do we approve the calendar the board meeting calendar uh for next year do we do that at reorg so i wanted to have a conversation about um only having one meeting a month in november and december because of the holidays and i know
098that we've we have had a conversation in a recent board meeting about spending uh time prior to each board meeting like maybe 30 minutes in a retreat to orient our new board members that are coming on and i i do want to honor that process and make sure that we give that the time that it deserves if that if that is something that we all agree to do um but i want to talk about that uh the possibility of uh limiting the board meetings in those two months that are filled with holidays if that's possible or at least have a conversation about it you can definitely have that conversation and while we're on the subject i want to mention uh that i i have been busy too so but i did speak with dr christiansen
099today who is working on his uh sort of proposal for your ongoing training and he is going to reach out to trustee sherry uh unless he reaches out in the next nine days i'm not gonna make the joke i was gonna make but that's okay uh um any other new business i just wanna respond to to cindy's query i i personally would be uncomfortable making the decision right now to limit board meetings in november and december but i would be comfortable discussing it and having those meetings be on the calendar as you know as flexible so that as we get closer to that time of year because we don't know what would be happening you know if if the if the superintendent needs us to meet if there are um opportunities where things have to
100get done in november and december i don't want us to be limited by not having it on the calendar i would prefer to have those go in personally prefer to have those go in as potentially as flexible days so that if the superintendent needs us to meet or if there's pressing business that we do have those days on the calendar so the community is informed and that we can kind of schedule knowing that they are there and that we might be needed i i would be more comfortable with that solution trust your story i like that idea also you know keeping them on there but not getting rid of them using them because i'm also thinking of schedule u and that month usually we have um we do reviews you know five weeks in or
10110 weeks in 10 weeks in we're talking about november so we're having program reviews and then the board has to approve any changes to ieps so we would be delaying our students services if we only held the meetings once a month and that's something that i'm not too keen on delaying special ed services trustee wallace would in november in november and december would it be possible to to potentially do a virtual meeting or two this is something we have to discuss at reorg meeting because we there's been change in the open meetings law policy and to do remote i bel you have to have a quorum in person and you have to establish rules of reasons why they have to be um due to serious illness there's a re there's guidelines that the state sent
102out that we have to go through and then we have to come up with a policy to do that so it's something that we have to discuss and we used to be able to do it at remote meetings but now no so amanda do you think that you could get us uh make sure that everybody has a copy of that before reorg so that we can make sure that we talk about it every org and what the virtual the open meeting law is now that allows for virtual meetings because there is some flexibility in there but i think we all need to including sarah and megan make sure that we all have that information prior to the meeting on july 5th so that we can talk about it and see if we want to come
103up with a policy and what that looks like because we did take advantage of it once in the last couple of months where we had to all go virtual because of covet exposure so i want to just take a look at that so if you could send it to everybody that would be great and include sarah and megan yeah so i'll send it to them as well as david they probably weren't included um the attorneys did send out a notice i think a couple days ago maybe so the open meetings law does change the 14th of july so if we do need to um go virtual then we will have to have a resolution for them so let's get that on the on the agenda for july 5th and make sure we all have access
104to that information prior to rework absolutely yep okay and then before we finish this topic i just want to bring up something that happened at our last board meeting um regarding the board of education calendar and the athletics awards um i just think it's really important that we don't have that kind of scheduling again i don't want families to have to choose between going to an award ceremony or a play or any kind of you know school activity that their child is involved in um and a board of education meeting we really want to encourage parents to attend as much as they can or community members as much as they can or want to attend our meetings and even for ourselves as parents and grandparents um you know valerie was in a really difficult position
105where she had to potentially be at the school to make a quorum and potentially miss part of logan's award ceremony and i just don't want to see that happen again so i want to make it really clear with our calendar and with the department heads so that we're all on the same page so that that does not happen again i'd also like to establish a special award for anyone that would choose a board of education meeting over any play at all put on by anybody um uh and just remember with regard to the meetings you can have the agenda can be as pared down as you need it to be so there's always that option too uh are there any any uh any other new business or requests for information may have a first to
106adjourn trustee to jesus it only is fitting may i second that myself there it is all those in favor all right that's a wrap you
