I'd like to call meeting to order Brian check Brandon let me go silence or mr. George Johnson who was a custodian for 20 years thank you right right just a variety of things to talk about the first one we meet on June 5th our normal board meeting and jennasmith Nancy Karen ivy and I are all at a conference so we it would be good if we can find an alternate date so I the way I see it we have three options we have to regular schedule meetings June 5th June 12 June 5th and June 19th so we view options that we have we could go to June 7th which is a Thursday and in the same week otherwise if we push to the 12th then we end up having two meetings back to back on
the 12th and 9th so that 7 doesn't clear 7th is a Thursday or we could have 1 June meeting so those are the three options the 7 the 12th or 1:00 meeting only on 19 it's been the following to experiment and if we did the 7th and then we would have two meetings back to back it's at the 12th in the 1970 the seventh of the Thursday vital link the 1219 yeah I think we scheduled it that way to Monday yeah and then fine we don't have exactly a weekend there's not that we can just roll it into the one right or what would likely happen as we might find that we have a full agenda at 12:00 and nothing for the night and then we right over there we don't have anything for the
main food then I'm gonna cancel it then is everyone free on the twelve so we're gonna go with the 12 to the 19th and we exhausted agenda on the 12th does it probably will be well because we'll be three weeks and then if we don't have anything on the 19th we'll discuss that it's electronically right yeah okay good the next thing I wanted to talk about briefly before I introduce you we do have a presentation tonight yeah we do have a presentation tonight but I did want to mention for those of you who didn't see it already and we'll do something a more formal in a meeting later that Nick little was awarded the Empire State Teacher Excellence Award for this region which is a really great thing and we'll do something a little more
formal for him when we have a little more time to certainly Congrats it's got a lot of really great things at fidget Parkin great example of our teaching faculty and now I want to introduce Catherine's elastic Athanasian of supervises the abroad trips and she's presented to the board before there was some conversation over the last month or so about about this and there were some a lot of talk at the board table and the board request that she do that she does come in and do a presentation and then after some conversation if you want to put the extrusions for that trip agenda in two weeks [Music] so high traffic so less than the environment WebAdvisor and I just thank you before words you know like the advisor for the club for maybe teacher for
a long time and I've done Kapoor ISM with students through the Environmental Club ever since I'd been an advisor I do have with me three students right now who have traveled with me so one two three have traveled with me I have a parent with me and another one that's coming at least one that is interested in traveling with me to South Africa for next summer so I'll try to do this very quickly so just a really quick overview here this club really started out as just an Envirothon review Club which is a environmentally themed academic competition three years ago we actually took third in the States so we do really do really well on the competition but I do try to show education overall I have students in grades 7 through 12 that kind
of gear up for that so I'm an advantage there that I teach at the middle school we do local trips we do do ecotourism and a lot of fundraising for the raising trips and we always do environmentally themed service projects we just birthday this past year we helped clean up race Creek I don't know if you saw it in the paper and there was another glass never ice cream ah so in terms of where we traveled in the past the board has supported us traveling to Costa Rica three different times quert Oh Rico we went to the South Pacific Fiji New Zealand Australia Hawaii we went to the Galapagos Islands the Grand Canyon and we went to Alaska locally we also travel we've been to the zoo Corning Museum of Glass if the kind of
Beaver Lake this fall we went to salmon river fish hatchery and Rice Creek and before you click these are my two teams from the Envirothon this year they did take home two first places and two second places three second places the bottom change of third overall next our trophy and the top team they took fourth overall and they're holding their $100 scholarships of the insurance though nice job to them but I'm here to talk about South Africa we're looking for board approval or a trip to South Africa this year you see we've done some exotic trips before we use Explorer top is our main four company we've had great success with them they really do give us the best price their agendas are really full which is great as a teacher because there's not lun
downtime and even a lot of babies anything - really really amazing tour guides very authentic tour guides and safety is their number one priority so the trip scheduled for next summer hopefully or July 1st to July 12 and some of the highlights that we're going to see Kruger National Park which I'll talk about in a moment going to Johannesburg Boulder Beach only southern penguins and Robben Island which is where Nelson Mandela was in prison so just a really diseased itinerary here we will be flying to Johannesburg and in Johannesburg we'll have a couple games there so gold reef city I didn't realize was a pretty large one of the famous time amusement parks there so I think the kids would really enjoy going to an amusement park there a couple days they're doing a lot
of the city cultural activities and then we'll be driving about three hours to the east to where Kruger National Park is and that's along the panoramic route which is just breathtaking the pictures are just breathtaking using what I've seen well spent a couple days of Kruger National Park you probably heard about it it's probably one of the most famous safari parks that you've heard of we are likely to see the top five animals the rhinos elephants buffalo lions and leopards on safari it covers two million hectares huge huge amount of space so I'm very much looking forward to that we'll spend a couple days there we will be you are going to be doing a soccer match there now when I went to let's rig it the first time just soccer match there and rocky
rocky terrain and kids there barefoot and we thought we had it back and they with they whip their tails and so I wonder how South Africa is in Cyprus that might be interesting we will fly to Cape Town from there so that's the very tip of South Africa and we'll go to Soweto which is the quintessential African village that you can just imagine making the crafts that you see in museums and stores and Cape Town will be visiting museums landmarks Nelson Mandela's home we will take a trip to Robben Island as I said to see where Nelson Mandela was jail and we will be going to see African penguins I'm excited about that an ostrich farm and we'll end with your classic feast South African feast so I'm really excited to bring this adventure to
the students I'm looking for the board approval it is a more expensive trip obviously this trip for students is four thousand seven hundred and ninety seven dollars two other trips that we've done before over four thousand dollars so South South Pacific was about that cost and so was the Galapagos Islands but these are trips that we fundraise for two years for we do fundraisers at least every month we have a dozen on the agenda now and students are able to raise I've had students raise the entire amount and then spending money as well everything is included in the truck sorry god I haven't myself everything is included the only thing students for lunch but they're usually at like little kiosk these things are get like a hot dog or something they're in we have to
have a passport souvenirs I don't think there's a lot of free time on this particular tour and that really does include everything too so I have eight that are interested right now and if I can start advertising more we should get we should get more I have a lot of parents they go to I always travel so students in grades 7 through 12 are always eligible and oh the ratio I think the ratio well it's it's set at six to one but I think we'll probably have to have I touch to the company before unless there's another group that is traveling at the same time we're going to need 12 people people yeah they have like when we go to Kruger National Park we'll have one of the nice buses and our tour guys was
with us the whole time or the bus driver will be with us the whole time except when we fly down to Cape Town that we'll have another bus driver so always on a nice bus the tour people will provide the transportation yes all of that so it's open to all seven to 12th graders and anyone and anyone that's traveled with me before and their family that immediate family parents that are yes and I do usually get adults I mean I always get it Yelp's on my trip so travel winter kids sometimes they they want to do it as a body and experiment sometimes you know the kids with their friends and their parents they cost the same know it so it's more for it I think like 300 dollars more for adults because your room
to to a room with the doubts and for children it's for children any other questions do you have one of those Dakota would like to travel with me and he has traveled with me before what do you think you learn on the trip I think I learned a lot about their culture over there like I traveled to police with Messel us and I learned a lot about like their cultural customs and actually learned a little bit of their creole language while I was there you have other students that travel but you would one of them like to stand up and maybe offer their a brief bit of their experience traveling well I probably better the compost Islands with a group and it was definitely one of the things about my life and it was quite
an experience that we forget in my lifetime and there's definitely summer will you be going on this one I'd really like to I also went to Costa Rica and Galapagos with Johnny and in coop ago they told us the year we went was possibly one of the last years to let tourists go not only did we go to cloud post went to Ecuador the country in South America and then went over to Galapagos Islands and they said they're gonna stop like tourists and pretty soon because of just like the way the environments changing and how that could be the last chance to we're seeing the sea turtles there and getting to learn a lot of stuff about their culture so that was a really cool experience so there's a lot of travelers out Jerry you
know the company is amazing actually we have scheduled to go to the year we went to South Pacific we were actually fundraising to go to Africa and there was a travel advisory and they just never ended up lifting that and and they wouldn't let us go so I mean obviously safety would be their first concern so the places that we're actually going in South Africa I mean Africa there was a political strife kind of thing that's not the issue that we have in South Africa and there are so many safari companies in Kruger I mean it's almost like African lion safari over today I had honestly with all the travel I don't I've never had a safety issue I've never I never worried because our tour directors with us 24/7 and it's a it's a
no-brainer you know not to go with a company like that so I think it would be great for the kids to see the animals in their natural habitat you know we all get the chance to see some of these animals and zoos but it's all good they try to recreate it but it's not real to the board got some guidance documents from legal as well as some guidance documents from our insurance company and there would be some things we would have to put in place and what we're doing by by pushing this and approving that is accepting the liability responsibilities and these kids and whatever happens from the time that they leave here it's at the time that they get back that's right I do appreciate and I like a lot that the safety personnel
that are making the decisions for you and your group is with you that makes a big difference it's their own hide that they have to worry about as well as everybody else so that's we would be watching the travel advisories right up to the last moment right and if the board always has the option of pulling the trip if it's a recommendation from either the government or from the Tool Company you know they're never giving away your right to pull the plug but the urgency now is so they can start fundraising yeah yeah attorneys both liabilities a trip I don't recall anything in there about then mentioning the tour company does it all come back at us or this is the first time that I even heard concern that you were assuming liability although I
mean it makes sense but I do have documentation cleaning company all their safety regulations I can send you a whole pack of stuff actually I'm happy to do that so they have they are used to working with schools and boards and important people so they are seeing a lot more about it than I do I ultimately the bottom line is there are kids exactly Irish and there are responsibilities so we assume that when we endorsed [Music] I have one other announcement that I'd like to make last week it's really kind of quite a big deal we've been talking an awful lot over the last year about our literature our element here that our C task force we've had a group of collaboration teachers and support staff administrators working on our literacy task force on how
to enhance our literacy framework in our district in K through 6 BOCES has been talking about that as well initially there's kind of lit a fire across the city BOCES and so we've been working collaboratively as well and last Wednesday for the very first time in the history of City boasts is really all nine component school districts and city bossy is signed into a collaborative agreement to enter into a pre-k three elementary literacy initiative for the next three years to the reading League which is a national collaborative of reading professionals and that will enhance the reading hook model that we're bringing into the budget which was an additional turnkey trainer for literacy and a very specific framework for teaching pre-k 3 literacy across the county so that's a really big deal so what we're doing
is we're going to provide equality of opportunity for learning how to read and pre kindergarten through grade 3 regardless of what school district you're in so you've got all all ten components working together we're going to have two shared superintendents conference days across the county next year to do a lot of work in k3 carries were working on the this through the CIC which is the rhythm in instruction Council across the county and all the nine school superintendents have been working with Roseanne Bane on this and we signed the contract on Wednesday so it's a really it's really quite an exciting thing [Music] next on the agenda we have the consent agenda so should I just lump us all together the the minutes a special educational for the treasurer's consolidate consolidated report monthly budget status
report and the financial report the fund balance projection the monthly budgetary transfer report extra classroom activities fund report OMS and next is Board of Education so oh thank you yes thank you she has got a remind me so all in favor so next is the Board of Education this is upon the presentation and recommendation of dr. zeger I saw retention school this is for us to approve the dates for our board of education meetings for next year so I know that there is gonna be discussion on this Karen did attach not only the district calendar but also the tentative sports schedule or modified and varsity and I know that through the past couple of years it always seems like a discussion that we end up having after everything's been approved and then everybody's like Oh
Jason we had changed the date so we had changed the time so kind of in discussion when this came up we thought why don't we get all the information out now we can talk about it and then you know it's not like that after the fact conversation so so I don't know let you guys go first I want what your thoughts are because as if it is as of right now with these dates here it's the same exact thing what we're doing right now so I'm Tuesdays at 5 o'clock Karen wanted me to point out you know I know I'm sure you've all looked at the attachments that we provided but and Ryan can maybe speak very still brand-new and speak to this you probably understand the president even carrying those but there's the sports
schedule that's provided as an attachment is very tentative and there's a lot of movement with athletics from season to season maybe you can articulate that better yeah it depends on at times there's things that are put in so for example they're late ads that we don't know about right now so if there's any kind of open houses that I don't know the dates of right now we have to move things around so we don't want to have people have to pick and choose between really important things between athletics and also attending those kinds of important events right so there'll be a little Evan flow also depending on the weather because we cannot control mother nature shouldn't have been that greatest thing but also busing so at times there will be too many buses that are
going out so we need to massage some schedules around a little bit to be able to accommodate a blessing I think it's a very fluid schedule is what it shakes out everybody so yeah so there's nothing there's no on it that has really locked in and something to changes any a lot of the indoor event so like for example volleyball girls and where's volleyball in the in the hall is something that typically it's right now this spring season it's buses and officials so we have to make sure that varsity you know we attended varsity person and we send them off right out so it's previous than that it was the snow try to match up the calendars and make sure we have open dialogues about when things come up like at the National Honor Society
event comes up you know we we obviously will will rearrange things if it's gonna impact kids you know I think he's something like that we already you know plan for but there are some things that pop up every once in a while right after then have a good discussion with but I always when people reach out to us to reschedule I will look at the calendar calendar that we have for next year if you see of anything like half days conference days that we know kids aren't gonna be there we stay away from those days right so you let's say that like there's one day because it's just in when I went through the calendar both calendars it seemed to me and and but when you look at all the dates and I think I
don't know what Samara Brian's brought this up before that that Monday seemed today seems to be rather the day that had the least amount of things on it no matter what you're looking at whether it's a concert or a sporting event so do you think that that's that's true pretty true yeah okay so I mean that's something and I don't remember who brought it up usually the only time according to reschedule money's are the best days [Music] yeah I know I talked about that then there was also the flipside of the conversation where people said well maybe that's confusing to the public and we are slipping it around and I guess my point was that because it seems like you know the first year we were on the board we kept having this discussion then
the second year you know new board members and then we had the discussion again but it was always after the things were you know rejected by the board so it was like all right why don't we talk about this before we accept the dates and make sure you know and then we won't be having the conversation hopefully you know six months from now or even the time I mean because that's the only thing like you know you look at concerts and most of them are 6:30 or 7:00 and most sporting events it's 4:30 or 6:30 so Tuesday's seem to be worth receipt of you well it's the big rush of Monday water my meetings committee Council there's always my daughter's there's probably not gonna be better than one opinion like I said I just want
to make sure that we're all on the same page it seems like a reoccurring and even to your point it's been a reach so rather than reactive yeah it's okay all right so the agenda airfare so they just want permission to be able to start looking down booking flights any other discussion questions all in favor hi KP is my stool or New York state textbook black we have several textbooks that will be used for banned for the ban curriculum and then one lonely Madame it seems like a lot of you have banned books but it's because these are lesson books for very specific instruments yeah and one thing it wasn't like Swiss drug each one or some things that I read that write lists expert yeah I did the same thing I looked robust holy
cow that's a lot but then when you read through it these are lesson any discussion motion no that and second [Music] yes is that why you're bringing we were going to bring it until we actually knew the amounts that we're going to be donated for for the trip and we bring that forward okay we're moving out of personnel with Heidi hey is a professional retirement upon the presentation and recommendation of doctor Dean Superintendent of Schools that the board accepts the following whereas Chris Johnston has served the students and staff of the school district as our incarcerated youth program teacher for the period September 1 2007 to the present and has been a most responsible conscientious and dedicated staff members service to the school district now therefore be it resolved that the members of the Board
of Education of these Widow City School District hereby acknowledge the faithful service of miss Johnston upon accepting her resignation for the purpose of retirement effective August 15 2018 and we express our grateful appreciation - sure so Chris has been as you can see since 2007 a teacher for our incarcerated youth at the county jail program she teaches those students who find themselves in those circumstances how many hours a day are the 200 and so forth she's helping them work for their GED high school so once you've been working with depends on how many students are in nursery at that time what it is is it a six or seven to eight hour program so she's preparing the lessons that they need practice on the various topics they take their practice these are these students are
school City School District students are they just County students or every question because if we're incarcerated students from us for the county then other school districts should be helping to pay this back than they were ranked one would think theoretically yes because it sits in our school catchment mm-hmm okay Carsley 15 services for tutoring yeah what's the salary didn't walk in sorry so she's she's a regular off remember so it becomes it would go back to medical assistance beautiful collecting now I will say that carry doctor doctor you and I have been working with City BOCES in the thought that as the laws change for incarcerated youth it does become a better option for school districts to perhaps work in conjunction with BOCES to provide the incarcerated youth education services as well as a site
for tasks which we don't currently have so that would be like policies teacher would go to possibly ojj as opposed to bringing them Toso so release the City School District from that responsibility possibly we're in very early discussions I'll run it through a closer so that's gonna right if we if we do that then we get a little bit of help that Wes hopefully is our own staff if we are able to generate a Kosar that generates aid back yeah okay so there's a couple options there thing I should point out is that under sheriff Sullivan has agreed to schedule a tour of the program I've never been there but before Heidi that why listen to me and anybody wants to go and obviously it takes a special kind of teacher incarcerated you look into
this then that will determine whether or not this year it's up to 18 and then either in the same kind of building or in the general population because obviously there's some concerns about 17 17 18 or 19 year old into the general population of a county jail and in the hopes that we're really working to educate and rehabilitate that person so trying to find them a different space in which they could maybe see some progress education this is absolutely one hundred percent mandated by New York State this is not a choice that we have this is a requirement that we have to financially and having to pay for students from other like I'm just wondering like have you talked to like other people from other districts like and I mean they're probably other school districts
are in the same situation we are where we have a county jail right within our school district grounds there's two things first of all it's unfair to the pupil desired the school district that one I understand because he'll set some stat line here district we have to pay the whole Shack should be divided up with all the nightmares other thing is we're providing more education to incarcerated students than we do to our own suspended it's two hours a day be professional retirement upon the presentation recommendation of dr. UI then the Board of Education accept the following whereas dagger lab nur has served the students and staff at the school district as a physical education teacher for the period September 1 1986 to the present and has been a most responsible conscientious and dedicated staff member
in service to the school district now therefore be it resolved that the members of the Board of Education of these twiggles city school districts hereby acknowledge the faithful service of miss lavendar upon accepting her resignation for the purpose of retirement effective July 1 2018 and we express our grateful appreciation to Anthony discussion you know we're going with the recovery that we know yes it's not exactly what we've been working on planning that this year as you know two years ago we started the practice of having all the retirees be recognized at the board meeting at the end of the year in addition to reading aloud behind the retirement resolution but we were gonna ramp it up a little bit this year I've been bothered by the fact over the last few years that someone can
serve our district for 20 30 35 40 years and they walk away from that meeting with a piece of cake and a paper for that animal so will happen that it won't be a saturated state it'll be as if it's one of the June meetings I think it's they come in who's recognized them as a group we have a photo op we have cake we typically present them with a certificate which they both still get a certificate of appreciation but also something else and then they get like an invitation to comment some years ago we had a really great turnout last year I was wondering how we do the making no the night was okay that was a separate one yeah well we'll make the invitation to much bigger deal and have them understanding to
come to that yeah and a couple of the retirees that are coming forward for October November we're still gonna pass their retirement resolutions and have them also at I'm not trying to establish a precedent or anything like that but just to kind of back up with who said when I'm retired I was given a plaque and it was really nice one it's bothered me a little bit and we certainly can't go you'll be go back but when people serve our district as teachers and support staff for their careers 10 years even 20 or 30 sometimes 40 and we give them a certificate a beautiful certificate and a really nice cardboard holder but I see districts doing better than that what really prompted me to do it was going with my wife to pick up the
retirement gifts for her retirees in her district my life we need to do this Nancy squirrely about it because I'm spending money but no I think I think the really the things are important we have to say and appreciate and recognize if you don't put in the time you have even mine didn't choke to say get an idea yeah see support staff retirement upon the presentation and recommendation of dr. Qi at the Board of Education accept the following where is anna-marie natoli has served the students and staff of this court that shaped for the period March 29 1996 to the present and has been a most responsible conscientious and dedicated staff member and service to the school district now therefore be it resolved that the members of the Board of Education of these for the
City School District hereby acknowledge the facial service and isn't wholly upon accepting her resignation for the purpose of retirement in the position of Titus effective July 31st 2018 and we express our professional staff recommendations resignations Megan flak teaching assistant at Minato Dennis Pollock out speedy math teacher at the Middle School and Jamie psychic technology education teacher and the high school any discussion all in favor the extra compensatory recommendation resignation for Dennis Pollock Kowski for his coaching positions a professional staff recommendation leave of absence respond to ascend to leave of absence for Chad Whitney social studies teacher at the high school effective name 14 did he actually leave or did he was gone for about a week and then was part of the program okay that's what I thought it was when I read this I
wasn't sure okay [Music] move it [Music] support staff recommendation resignation Rhonda pavada school bus attendant transportation and all in favor each support staff recommend leave of absence for Victoria Green a school bus driver from May 3rd we do exiting interviews just fathers usually a conversation with the director personnel when they hand in the resignation typically our instructional where you stay with us for a career at last day we had quite a bit of movement the support staff sometimes to move on I think we do actual things and interviews like you would in a in industry the yeah the reason I asked that is sometimes you get good feedback on why they're leaving or other things it's something that we could either chew on or look into they might not maternity somewhere else why would encourage
them just would even stay on with ill mother a lot of times you get a dental fight there but no yeah right yeah I think that's a good idea and they kind of we've talked about to doing like kind of on a separate note the exit hopefully get the polling sites to like Oh mija yeah that's good to find out like what people's reasoning was behind us so that we can then you know reflect and readjust and I think that anytime we have an opportunity that I think yes we did discussion was I support staff recommendations Herman Theresa Dowdle a counselor typist at the warehouse Tammy Martinez school bus drivers for transportation and Michelle Matata teacher aide part-time at Riley school any discussion if you don't mind I'll do all of J together as presented
but dads our support staff recommendations for summer transportation or this coming summer programming [Laughter] [Music] emotion yep sure second all in favor for K we have substitute and temporary employees for summer transportation which is separate than our normal temperatures any discussion and L is our substitute and temporary employees [Music] [Applause] alright next on the agenda we have my name is Polly Hayes for the board to accept the transfer of 1718 school tax properties to the city Chamberlin the county treasurer of s we go County and County Treasurer in the community County for collection total is about a hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars turning over for collection including the the city makes us hold and then they end up the motion second B is for a donation for born DonorsChoose which was procured by Aaron Sabatini
for fourth grade fidgets Park School in the amount of eight hundred and two dollars and 93 cents for student books and students evening for her classroom and C is for discussion I brought had given three RFPs to the audit committee to bring forward to the board for votes for internal audit services for this year and my suggestion was to award to Bona do and Company thirteen thousand nine hundred dollars annually I don't know if you want to have discussion at this time so this is just for freshmen members so this is not only we went with previously no we in the past we did Johnny Burke as well as our internal audit they no longer do schools they have a lead partner that had retired and gone to a different job and so they've let
that piece go so we went out for an RFP for the internal audit services and we received three RFPs this is the middle range firm they were giving us more hours for the risk assessment piece as well as for testing and so the last internal audit that was done was done by this previous company correct and when was that done two years ago so then this is going forward is thinking if we choose these people that for the next three years we'll do an internal audit on the District three the next three years yes and what they do is they come in to do a risk assessment so they'll do interviews and they'll go through all of the records for the district to say where are your internal control areas that then are high risk
don't give a report to the Audit Committee and the audit committee will review it and bring it to the board and actually the board will decide which areas they want tested and usually in the beginning of the year that they present that to the Audit Committee or is it the hey whenever we schedule it okay one of the things that they did do separate from the other there was one bit that was just through the roof yeah there was another bit that was lower than them but they had a lot at 85 hours 85 work hours and to achieve the testicle did Nancy do an internal on the other company scheduled an extra 30 hours each year and held their price for three consecutive years and have a little bit more experience than this other
company that's new to the internal audit beef and so they're trying to put their way in and seem absolutely right and they kind of fall short and they they have an unlimited it's this much an hour and we're planning on this bond AO has put together a package that says this is your cap it seems to me at least the way I read it is that there's an opportunity for a refund or less hours or they're good you know there were a mess already there have been bacon but it's not to exceed right and they're comfortable and confident that they can do the audit in this amount hours and they're like obviously when you're right on a syracuse they've been in business for quite a long time actually on a deal took over a test
on marshall in this bantha in their speciality is in school one of their pieces okay thank you the county is used upon their group and they've largely have been successful and professional and so it's recognizing other districts for other school districts that they use i did when i received their peas i do contact other districts that use all three firms so i spoke with my counterparts another district just to hear other people's feedback and help different companies unless they're there are the other countries are other companies are out of town they're actually located out of service so next on the agenda is items from the board members I think what I'd like to start off with Sasha if you're ready we had talked about cheese it was months ago we talked about at a board
meeting I said you know we she sits at the board table here with us and often times pipe standing gives us the student perspective and then I know when I've gone to other school districts to see their board meetings that the student rep would have a actual section on the agenda where they would be able to give students perspectives on whatever it was that they talked about sometimes they talked about you know I went to the such a homecoming and both gave a little I mean it was as detailed or not as detailed as they wanted to make it but I thought what a great opportunity for you not only to sit here but also to actively participate and also be able to give us the students voice so me the ruff truly and snow
what's going on so we're kinda talked about it event on it didn't you know we think between busyness with everything else it didn't happen so we touched base together and then I went away and so anyways so today's a day so to put together a great presentation that [Music] computer okay all right I'll say one other thing you know while we're waiting there so I just wanted to know that thing about me little I was gonna say that I think it's awesome because I'm such a huge fan of his and so I couldn't be more thrilled like this fantastic say that and then the other thing I want to say was Marybeth put together at the middle school a safety summit which was awesome and again too when you have kids in the district you
always hear anything and and I know the girls who came forward the 8th graders and very articulate intelligent young ladies who brought to Mary got that their concerns about safety within the school and still from that she came up with the idea to do a cross-section there was six seventh grade and eighth grade girls and also for moist and then a cross-section of different interest groups and then invited different dignitaries so we had the police chief and other time this department yeah you Dean Nancy Lori Burger King yeah it was awesome it was so cool so the kids all got to give their input on you know different questions you know having to do with security within the school and it was it was really awesome I thought it was a great idea it really
be able to hear again in students perspectives so that was a great thing to be a part of so thank you for thank you for coming [Music] so I am the a swig of rap for the single night school I've been doing shoot McDonald school districts for 13 years and president of student council and I average about 120 hours of community service each year they only use about 25 hours or so for student council or school activities the other 95 hours I you through camp rainbow which is a 75 hours on camp for children who had lost a loved one I'm a big body or like someone who looks after the kids there and also a varsity athlete I'm swimmer and I play golf for sophomore freshman year I've been an attending York College of
Pennsylvania in the fall of 2018 for elementary special education miss Carolyn asked me to do a certain a board of education for the students to have their voices heard and so I put it out 120 copies of the surveys and I got about 175 back from the students I ended up the surveys from 2-4 teachers from grades 9 through 12 I even them out to four core teachers and one elective teacher so I got a wide variety of answers from all different grades the kids that did do these surveys had good answers because they felt like the board would actually hear what they had to say so their favorite core classes were 60% 15 of our math 12 signs and participation 85% were student-athletes 75% are involved in music or band 30% are involved in
clubs and 20 over are in the theater programs such as like the backstage or in the actual almost every single student that did the survey one goes to either a sporting event or the JV show or one of the plays or Orchestra concerts that focus on um also the surveys every student said they felt challenged and at least one of the better classes letters AP or just a regular class the students would like to see different changes such as a water dog cellar an advanced anatomy course more student parking hats like a perfect match in the school district and do something more about like the baby in each site such as like monitor though or something like that and they want the bosses [Music] many teachers have influenced a lot of these students in the
district and I know and from my perspective and a lot of other classmates perspectives teachers have a huge impact on our students whether it's their the way they teach or if it's like just going down like a study ball or something like that having the students that they can go somewhere so they don't have to go to like a lunchroom or something like that a lot of students are collectives such as meteorology chamber TV class or studio sociology or talk to people cooking drama Holocaust the volunteer service Italy and remind us to us thanks the students like about things foods like but we're just our names on the survey sent the teachers then we have legions from for sporting events the military representatives Jimmy class / duty on phones and lunches good opportunity for classes
to take therapy dogs I have a seniors line or like a senior section on the survey and they also the same things [Music] short a but I I come here every day so like I don't even tell Italy to 30 to 35 to 35 bucks I mean unless you are like have your okay but if you're behind [Music] well I can give your mother feedback by several people two-way male one person one by phone about the new ticketing situation an EVs is there anything mr. merry merry volkema dr. Val Kilmer has been working with Tori and I for several months and they did a period of monitoring and talking with parents I'm talking about the OPD right it's been a problem you know the drop-off is difficult at Liberty Street now for students is because
more students driving than they did in our day the same is true of Kingsbury and all the elementary schools more parents are bringing their kids to school right rather than having them take a bus or walk to school it's very congested there I go through there every morning myself and so Tori spent some time with this folks talking with parents morning parents about the dangers associated with that congestion problem and if you go through there you see the manager they drop off their children but then it becomes a bit of a social event and they're gathering and chatting and so Tory decides that this week they're gonna drop the bomb and they started ticketing and we've been asking for their help so and but not without real Otis now they let all the people know
there that problem it it wasn't just they started no dropping tickets they they told the people this is what's coming we massaged it in yeah how do they communicate they were saying it you know they started with a lot of the petition sign and I think they sent all her letters letters and arias done automated messages and then they had officers assigned and they were actually talking to parents about your legally Park we're going to start ticketing you have to move on you have to drop your students between here and here and now they feel that it's time to yeah yeah I mean I think even if Manette oh you know Jenny does a great job trying to keep people moving but I think that probably every school we have the same issue because there
are changed of you know parental involvement and how many parents drive their kids to school but it is a safety concern I mean I know it minato like how you we have the you know walkway where the you know kids are supposed to walk on the walkway and parents are supposed to pull up and the kids get out and you're supposed to keep driving but you always will and you don't have some parents who park their car in the middle of things you know where people and then now people are walking in between nobody knows right it's just that we need to look and I have I'm working with obedience didn't this isn't just something a pop-top randomly are they doing this very good probably know they don't dump on any school they assisted us
at riding a couple of years ago and that was very helpful but Kingsford sits right on and really a main street it has all the same constant but Nano has with people the kids walking in around plus two lanes of traffic and then all of a sudden the parent starts the damned up on the northbound so they on the southbound kids and then we've got two lanes of traffic that are packed into one and a half it's a been yeah no one's like every school needs to have like a like a just a lame like I hope you shake that if you're doing the drop-off you go into the you drop your child off yeah there [Applause] we've learned assuming level with Mary trying to talk about creating different ways around all kinds of things
none of which are easy simple or no pretty clear I can see anybody who is trying to get across it's pretty amazing we had a call last year into super hence office because these summaries that needed to go to their daily was only Kingsford parent wanted us to know that now they're a turn on Varick Street and they take third Street and then we just wanted us to know that they've their travel so that's that's the background okay one other question I have new vision discussion yeah we sent eleven last year we approved five so it's sixteen pole position I'm not with Pat today about that in fact 16 and as a as a Pat's not here comes with the in frightening but as luck would have it as of this morning there were 16
approved students for that were accepted by City I said and not our criteria so he was he was nervous because somebody was telling him that it was 15 and I'm like now Pat I'm a literacy guy but 11 plus 5 or 16 like DOMA 16 and if it was 17 years ago that we're paying for it next year but if it was just huge evolutionary munication yeah and he was 15 in there still some concerns we were gonna leave one one yeah he asked for clarification they're all in yeah 16 then actually the 17th person didn't vote can I just say thank you for the reactor systems yeah what's the pizza don't know I think that everyone appreciates the wraptor system there are some hiccups related to to our clerical staff because we put something
else on them and it's a new technology but really it it's been quite smooth and the feedback on the new credential swipe system here at the Education Center in the camera his pencils great leave me out here little feedback man communication element from the why she was told to go to the old ed building to get her picture taken today before the wraptor system so when she showed up there she called me she says yeah doors locked other kids where do I go so she just read the signs and said I'm down here man if you need to go to technology please call that sign is enough it was on the windows she read that to come down here so she came down here so I don't know if she got a picture taken or
not era Jana we are silver 120 East first but we have signs in the doors they call us if you come there we don't have your locked up though right the doors at La we are we don't have I'm gonna still have the tenant than the basement anymore he's still technically there but I never see him he's there I did too well I wasn't either he was run biggest baby was rarely after married one with higher yeah but it's just so you look good morning about yeah like best yeah yeah but they need a lot of clients it may not be him but he has someone working for him so brandy actually and just has to talk with her Jamie brandy we weren't working on some of those kind of issues well one of the
main things about getting a better system was trying to get anybody in our buildings when school is in session to get them labeled with either an ID badge or one of the reps or visitor badges so you know Rachel's in the building every day so those types of people what we're trying to do is get them a temporary illegal bag because we expect them in our building right so you know we did talk to clinical about that it's all the contact our office to a range of time because we are locked up if that got lost I apologize I spoke we we are we created like temporary yeah contractor badges or contracted services badges for those people so I know 10 months ago we got our acoustic and fried oh you I was under the
impression good actually we didn't start I'll get those to you that's a good idea and I know you've because even go into the middle school not that it was a big deal for me my my license in there but I was like Jesus because we do go to so many things it's a lot easier for us to just have just you can just clear up the communication I think it'd be good so people are driving around trying to figure out where your takers [Music] and did I have a motion to adjourn yeah
