002May I please get a motion for the approval of the agenda? So moved. Thank you. Second. Thank you. Um any discussion or revision? Seeing none, all those in favor? I. Opposed? Abstention? Motion passes. Um correspondence. Um I just wanted to stay here. Um we just wanted to acknowledge the fact that um our music program has been recognized once again as a Remind me what the N A L Oh jeez, I couldn't do it on the spot. >> Yes, me neither. Thank you. Um but they've they've got a lovely, a wonderful recognition. It's it's I'm sure it's the National Music Marvelous Music something or other. So, I I think we're a community of musical excellence. >> Thank you. Thank you, Marion. Let's Let's call it that. >> Where would we be without Marion? And where would
003we be without our wonderful music program? So, I want to shout out a congratulations to all the people that work so hard on that all the time, and the students, of course, who gain so much from their participation in that. Uh I'll just highlight that this today. Um And moving on to my remarks, welcome. Welcome to the people here in the room and the people at home. Um you know, we're coming into a uh nice time of year for the board. There's an awful lot of celebratory events that we get invited to. Tomorrow night we're heading off to honor key at the high school, and then, you know, we'll move on through the months to the moving up ceremonies at the middle schools, and and then on finally to graduation. So, um it's a it's
004a happy time of year as people wind up all their hard work, and and the kids get the recognition they deserve. Um I don't really have anything else right now. I have some nice things to say at Reflections, but I'll wait till the end. Yeah, I think so. Majority of my comments will come along the way, uh Marion, but I did just want to know it's the 15th year, and I believe it's the 15th consecutive year uh that we've been recognized as a uh best community for music education uh in the area, which is just remarkable, and uh a testament to our value for music education throughout Arlington schools. Uh a couple other things, obviously we have some state testing that's begun uh this time of year, and uh that is is going well in
005our buildings. Um I also wanted to note that just cuz I was talking to Mia, the the 10-1-1 girls flag football team had a great win, which was featured in the uh Poughkeepsie Journal uh this morning. I'm pretty sure we have not met since uh Frozen uh was put on by the Admiral Players. Uh what a trip. I I felt like I was going uh First of all, the performance was fantastic, but I I saw the movie Frozen many years ago when my kids were little, and I just What a joy. Only my wife and I went, but to see so many young uh children who were there dressed up singing along throughout the performance. It brought me back to particular time a little earlier in parenthood. So but the cast did a fantastic job.
006Congratulations to them and it was really just a fun evening. I know I saw Donna there the same night we were there and many had the opportunity to attend. It was a full house on on Friday night and seemed to go off just perfectly. With that >> and so many kids involved in that production. You know, at the end when all the kids that are involved behind the stage and you know, all the kids in the pit crew. I mean that's talking about our music program. Not too many music not too many schools have so many students that are qualified to perform in a pit and what an experience to be able to perform with a live show. Yeah and and and highlights so many great things about Arlington thank you for mentioning the pit
007cuz I forgot but to to see the just the fact that we have a space and I know the space has to be altered the stage and we remove seating to to fit the pit in there but the fact that we have such a wonderful performing arts space for our students to obviously put on the the production is is really remarkable and I think shows the the investment that our community continues to make in our school facilities as well. So great show and kudos to everyone involved. All I have a couple of remarks but they'll come up along the way. So I'll stop there. Turn it over to Mia. Okay, thank you Mia. Hi everyone. We have a really exciting week upon us. So as Dr. Benante mentioned we have the honor key ceremony tomorrow
008night which is going to be great for everyone to get recognized for their hard work throughout high school. And then on Friday we have the junior prom which that should be really fun. I know the junior student government has worked really hard on that. Additionally, Friday is May 1st, which is known as National Decision Day. So, myself along with many others are very excited to see where all of our peers will be going to school. So, hopefully people will be showing that off on Friday with some t-shirts or fun merch. And yeah, I know Dr. Benante already said something about flag football, but we did beat the number one team in the state yesterday. So, that was very exciting for us and yeah, just great overall for our team and we are now our record
009is now 10 and one and then one tie. Um and we're going on to play North Rockland on Thursday. So, yeah. Thank you. Mhm. Thank you, Mia. That's great. Thank you very much, Mia. Does anyone have any questions for Mia tonight? Okay. Well, thank you. Um Mrs. Do we have anyone for public comment tonight? No public comment tonight. >> Okay. Thank you. Um reports and discussions. We're We um We're We're just We don't have any reports or discussions tonight. So, let's just pause in a brief celebration of that. Cuz it's been a very long winter. A moment of silence. >> Yes. Deep respect. Okay. Um Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You need a little practice on that pledge presentation. One more time. One more time. Okay. That's exactly right. Um Okay. So, we do have a little
010um Okay. So, um we have some policies up for second reading under um under policy item A, a second and final reading for policies with revisions. May I please get a motion? Thank you. Second. Thank you. Thank you. Get your little routine down there, guys. Um Any comments? Seeing none, all those in favor? Aye. Opposed? Abstention? Motion passes. I think we all have a little spring fever tonight. That's all I'm going to say. There's a There's some bubble in the room. Um the And then we have um item B, second and final reading for for policies without revisions. So, may I please get a motion? So moved. Thank you. >> Second. Thank you. Any comment? Discussion? Seeing none, all those in favor? Aye. Opposed? Abstention? Motion passes. New business. Our new business section of the
011agenda lists several items for individual resolution approval. Documentation concerning these items have been provided to our board members in advance to assure an extensive and thorough review. Item B, civil service creation {slash} abolishment of position. May I please get a motion? So moved. Thank you. Thank you. Um any discussion? I'll just mention that I mentioned months ago that Linda Iverson, who was the longest serving employee, active employee in the Arlington School District, 46 years, Wow. was retiring. And with Linda's retirement, she the county no longer has the title that it's a unique civil service thing that Linda held from for 46 years in the district. So, we are now we have to change the title of that position and we feel a senior typist is the accurate title for that. So, that's what you're acting
012on right now. Okay. Thank you. And congratulations to Linda. >> to Linda. This is her last week of this week. >> And and thank you for her dedication for 46 years. >> 46 years. It's quite an accomplishment. Um so, that said, all those in favor? Aye. Opposed? Abstention? Motion passes. Item C, computer hardware software related equipment lease. May I please get a motion? So moved. Thank you. Second. Thank you. Any discussion? Seeing none, all those in favor? Aye. Opposed? Abstention? Motion passes. Item D, Dutchess BOCES Board of Education component vote. May I please get a motion? So moved. Second. Thank you. Um All those Oh, is there any discussion? I'm sorry. I'm Seeing none. So, we're voting for both things at the same time. We're voting for two of our candidates and we're voting for
013their budget for the year. So, all those in favor? Aye. Opposed? Abstentions? And congratulations to the two people. I think they got two excellent people that are going to serve on their board. I know them through Dutchess County school boards. Um Item E, extension of probationary period. May I please get a motion? So moved. Thank you. Second. Thank you. Any discussion? Seeing none. All those in favor? Aye. Aye. Opposed? Abstention? Motion passes. Item F, resolution of the Board of Education of the Arlington Central School District in support of the petition of the Lower Hudson Education Coalition, case number 26-00643. May I please get a motion? So moved. Thank you. >> Second. Thank you. Any discussion? I'll just mention to Mary Ann if there's anything you want to add to the board. I appreciate the amount
014of time the board spent in their committee of the whole process with examining the feasibility study that was attached to the electrification of our school bus fleet. I thought the board asked excellent questions of the individuals who were charged with that study. Noting notably though, the Lower Hudson Education Coalition of which we are a part, has pointed out things that came up naturally in that discussion specifically related to the capacity of districts to facilitate the change on this change on the timeline that's been outlined by New York State. So, by authorizing your action here gives um, authorization really to to Mary Ann to file on on the district clerk to file on behalf of the Board of Education. Mary Ann has signed uh will sign the letter indicating a desire for the Public Service Commission
015uh to hold its own hearing related to this law. I'm not questioning the merits of the law, but uh districts again ability to meet the timeline given the electrical needs that exist within unique communities like the one we're here cuz half of our fleet is housed here um as well as for us at the Arlington facility. And and as you saw, it's quite a significant level of uh infrastructure upgrades that are going to be needed as well as electrical upgrades that are going to be needed in order to get the appropriate amount of power. Uh this petition speaks specifically to what the utility companies have noted is at least a 2-year uh 1-to-2-year lag time just to get the electricity uh to the locations that would serve our our bus fleet. So, that's what this
016is specific to. Um and and asking again the Public Service Commission to hold its own hearing regarding this matter so that could be further examined. You know, we had a um I think a a a very good uh committee-of-the-whole meeting last week. Um it was a topic that really needed to have a sort of um focused attention. It's a very complex topic um which is electrifying our school bus fleet. I think um uh it's a very admirable goal to want to improve our world in any way we can, you know, but the the devil's in the details as they say, and it's a very expensive proposition for schools. So, um we're looking to educate our legislators and our community, right, about um what what perhaps if this is the goal is a is a better
017way to do it not on the backs of of public school districts. So, um this is one approach, and I know that there are many other um efforts in on different areas to sort of uh maybe regroup on the on the requirements that have us electrifying by 2035. So, um does anybody else want to make any comments about it at this time but our about our um meeting last week or I have one more. Yeah, Donna. Um I just uh just You can like pull that right down. >> Yeah, I just it's Just like it's like a it's like a Gumby. funny and I know I I speak quietly sometimes. I was just really struck um I'm this my second year finishing my second year on the board and there's a lot to learn and
018I I I know I've heard Kevin uh our business business manager VP of business uh get kind of agitated a little bit about just what he sees as the expense and I I I knew that but I I think it wasn't until we really had the workshop and we really saw numbers and the timing so I don't know and I mentioned this to a few of my my my friends in the area and they didn't realize that the idea is we have to um electrify the entire bus fleet meaning change out all the buses by 2035 which is only what eight years away and um it's when you look at those numbers the it's $114 million and you think in capital plus operating expenses. Now, I mean I'm very concerned about climate change which I'm
019sure you all are and and reducing greenhouse gases. I mean these these are vital problems of our day but I mean the it's just I I don't know how you pay for that. Um you know, what what's going to happen to our programs to our our taxpayers? Want us pay more taxes? We're already paying a lot of taxes and we're trying to keep it under control to maintain our programs that we already have. So, I don't know. It was very scary to me honestly and it was it was a big concern so I've talked to Mary Ann since then and she said there was a lot of advocating going on and I'm sure Mary Ann would tell me the same thing a lot of advocating going on that maybe I wasn't aware of before uh
020cuz it just wasn't really on my radar, but um anyway, I just wanted to I told Mary and I wanted to mention it as well today cuz I just I was so struck and I I feel like this is a really important issue we need to have some some discussion at the state level with how this can be done in a manageable way that doesn't really impact the the school districts and our programs. Right. It's not easily explained in a sound bite. Right? And that's sometimes one of the hardest problems to solve. Um not a great slogan. We like buses, but you know, I don't know what I I I don't know what you say. So, um anybody else have anything they want to add right now? Sophia? One thing Oh, I plus one to
021what Donna just said, but I also I learned that meeting that we had already moved to propane. Mhm. I didn't know that before. So, that was a big moment for me too. Like, ah. So, it's good to know. Yeah, uh and just our entire fleet will be uh running on propane putting aside the hybrid vehicles that we have that are smaller uh at the conclusion of this year with the purchase of the next wave of buses. So, that's a conversion of fleet over 12 years that uh Kevin has facilitated and has a significantly reduced our carbon footprint uh over that 12-year period of time. Um so, one of the points of frustration I think that comes through uh at times when Kevin is speaking is the fact that we've made this effort quietly behind the
022scenes uh to shift from diesel to propane uh and that doesn't seem to fit uh it doesn't fit uh within the requirements of the law. You know, and I think too, um as much as if you think look back to all our discussions on budget this year, you know, we're we're always looking at, you know, program and total cost, but you know, wherever possible we've had the the program for years before it was fashionable to you know turn off all the computers during breaks and you know all it and then of course we have overlooked with this new geothermal and we had an opportunity to sort of in a cost effective way change one of our buildings to geothermal. So people shouldn't misunderstand that it's not that we are not interested but it needs to
023be um it needs to be doable. The the thing at the moment is not doable even if it's even if we're there are people who are I'm trying not to say pretending. People who are saying that it's that it is. John do you have your hand up? I just thought it was interesting that you had just said how long it took Kevin to turn our last fleet over Yes. the timeline that we're on is much less at a higher cost. Um plus the added fact that we need more infrastructure. So it just seems confusing to how we can accomplish that in such a short time frame. Thank you. Anybody else? All right then this now we need to vote. Um All those in favor? I. I. Opposed? Abstention? Motion passes. The business consent agenda. Our
024consent section of the agenda lists several items for approval by a single motion. Documentation concerning these items have been provided to our board members in advance to assure an extensive and thorough review. Yeah please get a motion on the consent agenda. So moved. Thank you. Second. Thank you. Um any discussion? If I may. Certainly. I just the board had an opportunity to meet and I'd like to introduce the community to Dr. Matthew Judah. Uh Matt's here in the front row wearing a maroon tie, which I love. Uh Matthew is our recommended candidate with your approval uh this evening to be the next principal of LaGrange Middle School. Uh I just have a few things to share related to that. First, uh we had uh quite an extensive committee process, multiple rounds through that process. So,
025I wanted to just first acknowledge all of the teachers, uh the staff members, uh our our parents, uh our students, and then uh as well as Mrs. Roberto and and Ms. Fuller uh for their facilitation of that process and for everyone's engagement along the way. This started with uh meeting with the staff, and uh Hillary always has a survey to families, and really uh developing the profile of the candidate, and we feel we have a an absolutely outstanding candidate uh to present to you. Uh we say in Arlington that in order to be successful as a a school leader, your your entry, if you will, you you have to do or model three things. You have to model presence, uh you have to model level of emotional intelligence, and you have to have a collaborative
026spirit or way about you. And we feel that Matt uh embodies or we've seen uh reflections of this not only in his um discussions at the committee level, but also in our review of his background experience through the reference checking process. Uh we feel that those three things are are present in Matt. Uh but also uh Matt's uh vision uh for especially particularly in working and his background experience in working with uh diverse uh school populations, diverse communities, really seeing that as a a value and a strength within the community uh based on his work previously in Rochester and in Rhode Island, uh and the way he engaged his staff and his families and community uh was something that really stood out to us, and we feel is exactly what uh the LaGrange Middle School
027community and the Arlington community needs at this point in time. And and there's two unique things that I just want to speak to. It speak a little bit to Matt's character that came up along the way or I heard. Uh one we had a um uh Matt noted on his resume that he's a licensed barber. And which kind of stands out, right? You don't usually see that. You see all these educational things and Matt has his doctorate, so you know, here you go and you're thinking we'll talk about the dissertation a little bit or talk about some things related to English language arts or mathematics. And tell us a little bit you're a licensed barber. What what's that about? Matt noted and it it speaks to him being student-centered in the previous school he had
028worked in. Um students didn't have the ability to get a haircut and and and that was something that was become boys in particular and it was becoming a point of uh you know, vulnerability especially in a middle level. Um so Matt took it upon himself to go ahead and become a licensed barber so he could provide his students with a haircut from time to time and I think that's just, you know, phenomenal. And then second, we had uh one of our parent members is bilingual and she noted on Matt's resume. I heard about this, so I uh uh bear with me, but I, you know, we talk within the process even though I wasn't in the room. Uh that she noted he was uh he was uh had conversational fluency in Spanish. Uh so unannounced
029to the group, she decides to ask him a question at the end of the interview in Spanish. Uh and Matt responded uh very well from what I understand uh cuz I would not be the person to assess the accuracy of that in the room, but the parent was and was quite impressed. He even said he he's more than conversational Spanish, which I just think is uh again really unique, but something that's necessary cuz we have a increasing number of bilingual families uh particularly Spanish-speaking families in our community, particularly within the LMS community. So uh for all those reasons and more, uh uh it's my honor and and pleasure really to introduce you to Matt Chiodo with your approval on the consent agenda this evening. Okay. Any other comments on the consent agenda? Then why don't
030we Why don't we do it? Get this done. There you go. All those in favor, uh I. Opposed, abstentions, motion passes. Congratulations. Welcome. And I'll just note Mary Ann that we'll have a message going out to the community tomorrow just introducing Matt and then we're going to have some time to set up with Matt to bring him over to LMS which I'll organize with our team to again meet students, meet parents, meet the the faculty and staff before the end of the school year. We're going to give him a little bit of time to square up some things down at Rockland BOCES but we look forward to welcoming Matt formally to the community in the coming months. Welcome. I'm so glad you could be here tonight. That's great. You picked a really short meeting. Our
031good luck charm here. Yeah. Come whenever you like. Okay. That moves us on to um Excuse me. That moves us on to item 12, page 17, future discussion items. Does anybody have any future discussion items they like to add today? Seeing none. Um and we have no more we have no public comment I'm hearing. Um that moves us to committee reports. Um advocacy. Imagine that we're still waiting for the state budget. And that's about all I've got to say. We're waiting patiently, impatiently, whatever. Um let's hope there last extender um actually went through yesterday so I waited by my phone all day today for the next one but I haven't seen anything come across the airwaves so maybe they're still locked away up there. And by midnight tonight we'll hear something but again light a
032candle and here we go. Alrighty Roo. Thank you. That moves us to audit. Nothing at this time. Okay. Cathy. Nothing at this time. Okay. Policy. Our next meeting is May 13th at 3:00 p.m. Okay. That moves us to organizational reports. Um the Uh Arlington Education Foundation. Sorry about that. This weekend is the big weekend >> Yeah. the community 5K and walk. Um some lucky participant of the kids race will win a fully funded birthday party. I believe Yeah. >> Really? Um so it you know, it'll be a like a door prize um for our participants. So that's exciting. Today I was out on the course with uh Marissa Strange who does who sets up the course. We spray painted all the arrows. So if you're doing it, you shouldn't get lost. Um and while I
033was there, I had the interesting treat of hearing uh the middle school band under Mr. Stevens' guidance playing on the sidewalk having their rehearsal on the sidewalk. >> Oh. That was kind of cool. Um and then the only other thing is the um scholarship breakfast is May 29th. I've been reading quite a few scholarship applications. I'm not the only one, so I don't see all of them. But our kids are are living the mission. When you read those scholarship applications, you know they're living the mission. That's wonderful. Thank you very much. Dutchess County School Boards and BOCES update. Um there has not been a meeting since our last meeting. Um the next Dutchess County School Boards is next Thursday evening. Um I believe it's the 7th by a Zoom. And also the dinner at the
034end of the year is June 4th. Um it's at Mod on College View. It's at 6:00. I think it's 6:00 to 8:30. Um everyone's invited. Superintendents and boards. Um and I'm sure I think something will come out separately from Kelly about that, but start checking your calendars and seeing if you would like to do that on June 4th. And no BOCES because we haven't met since whenever. Okay. PTA PTSA Council, they actually met last night. That was very nice of them. They moved from tomorrow night because of the honor key and that we could make it. Um Dr. Bernhardt he did a great his his traveling dog and pony show on the budget. You know, he's got it down. He They got a streamlined one. I mean, I think he did that in today in
0352/3 of the time. >> It was it was really it was very good, but you hit all the highlights. Hit all the big big points. Um and they're an they're educated audience, so they kind of knew what they were listening for and had some good questions. Um you know, it's nice to hear they're gearing up for staff appreciation, so I think also I'd like to share, you know, um the board's appreciation for our staff in all their capacities and everything they do. All the different people that come together as a team and a group to support our children in so many different ways. Um and the fact that our PTAs work so hard to uh honor them in the next couple of weeks is is is very very rewarding, very nice. Um uh District Health
036and Safety. Nothing to start. Um District Equity. We had a meeting on the 16th. Um the focus of the meeting, there were two associates from the District Attorney's Office to talk about community engagement and what they do in schools, particularly about their new hate crimes unit. Um they work with the US Department of Justice. Um and they're trying to interface with schools and faith faith-based groups to um just let them know what support they can give in the enforcement and the investigation of hate crimes. So, it was an interesting meeting. There were a lot of questions, so um it was good it was a great meeting, actually. And then the next they'll actually be pushing into some of the social studies classes. I would assume that's at the high school. >> Yeah, we're still flushing
037that out, but um Mr. Viviano, I think was one of the individuals presenting. He's a graduate. Um and uh there's a level of education they want to also be able to provide to our student body around the laws related to hate crime. And um they have some interesting case studies as well. Uh compelling. Uh uh that they're looking that seem to fit really well with uh social studies at the secondary level, particularly high school right now. So, they're still shaping their program and they're working with our staff to uh share a little bit about what resources they have and how they can make that into a student presentation for our students. That's great. Next meeting is May 7th. Okay. Uh brings us to superintendent closing remarks. If it's okay, I'd like to yield my time
038to Mia uh to speak about the unified prom. Oh. Oh, which we forgot at the beginning of the meeting. Well, once we're done with that, reflections, too. Yeah. I forgot to mention it, but on Friday, we did have the unified prom, and it went very well. It was so fun to dance and sing and just have a good time for a few hours. And it's really nice because there's kind of a different group of kids that does the bocce ball and then the bowling and the basketball. So, for all of us to come together at one event every year is really nice. And hopefully in the future we can have more like total unified events, because I think that might be the only one where like all the sports come together. But, it was great.
039Oh, this wonderful. Thank you. Um that brings us to board reflections. Anybody have a board reflection they'd like to share? I have some on my phone. Where's my phone? I'll just I'll just piggyback on the prom. >> Yeah. >> We We went early just to see everybody arrive. And it First of all, the way they get the cafeteria looking not like the cafeteria is just amazing. Um and just the joy of the kids coming in and the parents being there as supporters. Um it's just It's just a great community event. Yeah. So Beautifully done as usual. Yeah, and the dance floor is filled like right away. Like 10 minutes in, dance floor totally filled. You know, just great. So, um No, that was That's wonderful. Uh Brian. Yeah, just one to wrap up the uh
040color guard season. So, congratulations to the cadets and the Admirals that they uh the Mac champions from that. And the uh Admirals finished 23rd, 24th in Dayton. So, just right outside top 15 for finals. So, it was a great season and they both had uh wonderful shows. And look forward to the show next year. Thank you. Okay. Anybody else? I did get to attend the Frozen, the musical Frozen. Um It was It was just wonderful. I have to say um it was uh I went Friday night. It was a really full. I tried to I I have a kind of place I like to sit. And usually I don't have a lot of people around me, but there there were so many people that they were encroaching on my little space. So, I cuz I
041I I like to uh I don't know. I I just I really enjoy being there. And I enjoy um watching all the goings-on. Uh And it it really is a a a a huge undertaking. And And I was very glad that they got back to a a crowd pleaser for the little kids cuz it's fun for them to see what they can be part of as years come as years go by. Um so and and and good for them. They did two shows on Saturday. I mean that is a lot because a lot of these kids, I remember when my my kids were coming through, a lot of these kids these this is tough time of year. They got some big exams coming up. You know, they got work to come up and they need
042some part of that weekend to get something done. And when you have two shows and then and then all day Saturday is their matinee and then their party and then they're breaking down and you know, it's a lot. So I had I my hats off to them and the commitment that they they made to make such a wonderful show for everybody. Um anybody else got reflections? Okay. I went to Frozen on Sunday. Oh, did you? They announced that it was the first Admiral Players show to be completely sold out all four shows in like 20 years. Wow. Wow, that's awesome. Yeah. So that's cool even with the extra matinee on Saturday. Good for them. Yeah. It's quite a feat. Well, look oh, sorry Donna. Yeah, that what you said it reminded me I was I
043was there there were a lot of us film and young youngers especially with their sparkly stars. But I and like what Brian was mentioning in the prom the unified prom like I mean these are just events that bring the community together and I just love that that you know, the school can be a focus for you know, combining students the parents and the the people we bring in like the the staff the the professionals that come in and help run the you know, help teach and and work with our students. It's it's it's really amazing. I think community that you mentioned our community that you mentioned me it was is a great word to to describe it. Yeah, and and and they did such a great job with lighting too. And what's nice is I
044know because I I I have some experience with what they but they bring people in to help the kids learn more about lighting and to design the lighting and they have junior lighting designers. So they're really giving them a broad spectrum of opportunities between being in the pit or being in the costume crew or working on the sets. So um we love any way that that gets a lot of kids involved. One makes new friends, meet new people. Um anybody else? Okay, then um can I please get a motion for adjournment? So moved. >> Thank you. Second. Excellent. All those in favor? I. Opposed? Abstention? Motion
