001so okay uh can I have a second please uh all those in favor I opposed of stage motion passes welcome back to our regular meeting the pleasure to be here can we rise please for the Pledge of Allegiance in the back of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all uh you know we didn't do to our uh as far as you did this do we need to like nominate me as Clerk so we need to do that it's usually later the chair can appoint anyone as a clerk all right that sounds super official does everyone agreed to vote on them excellent then I'm going to take the real account um and McCormick Kelly here here Jeff Hayes here

002Eileen snuck here Mary Quinn here Mark sort of tour I am here Mary and me and I am here sorry I couldn't do alphabetical order all right uh video our mission is to empower all students to be self-directed lifelong Learners who willingly we contribute to their community and leave passionate personal purposeful lives approval of the agenda um can I get a motion to approve the agenda please second all is in favor aye against Saint promotion passes okay I'm gonna um I need a motion to open the public hearing on the code of conduct second when that was Marion okay all those in favor aye aye opposed obsession the hearing for code of conduct is opened now I apologize we opened the room late does anybody have if anybody would like to speak to the code

003of conduct I know we have signed up sheet somewhere but they're a little I have sign up sheets in the bag for the regular meeting for public comments if you if you do want to speak to the code of conduct um why don't you just put your name down in my code of conduct next to it so we know I guess but seeing none I'm gonna uh I'd like a motion to close the public hearing for short of conduct second all those in favor opposed of stains motion passes correspondence does anybody have any correspondences like to share well we did get correspondence this year asking about why the schools will not be closed during the Passover holiday so I just wanted to acknowledge that to Kelly I don't know if you you gave a I

004thought that Dave gave a really thorough response to the to the person that inquired I don't know if you want to because it's been brought up make a little comment now well typically we've tried to acknowledge Passover in our calendar and I I think in most years have done that um this year because of the start of school which our teachers do not report till September 1st and that's a Friday and then we have the opening superintendent's conference days and we start school um on September 6th so we're Labor Day falls we get a little bit of an odd break in terms of when we can have teachers report and when we can actually officially start classes um and then June 19th is now a holiday and every year you have certain anomalies with spring

005break and um the holiday the winter holidays and so you you don't always know exactly you know the calendar is never exactly the same but you try to mirror it and indicate Etc but with Regents testing and the number of days that that we need to schedule for student contact days and snow days we just have very very tight calendar this year where we were unable to um allow for the Passover holiday as part of our school calendar so it was really it's something that obviously we take into account and consider and it was just a challenge this year to be able to accommodate that you know and I just want to add that I liked your comments to the parent about the fact that you know we certainly encourage families to take those days

006if it's meaningful to them and that they shouldn't worry about that they can coordinate with their teachers as far as work Miss during those days that it's that we would support children in any kind of religious holiday exactly there are religious holidays that that are celebrated by families that that our school calendar does not account for they simply need to contact their their building Administration and their teachers and we work with them individually thank you very much for president's remarks um uh I don't have a lot to say tonight I wanna the board had their Retreat a couple of weeks ago I want to thank the board members for taking time out of their summer and their personal vacation times and medications and their busy schedules to make time to really help us prepare for

007the upcoming year I think it was well used um and I want to shout out to all our our staff we have a mix of Staff who are hopefully enjoying a relaxing summer and staff that are working to prepare for the next year and then the hybrid people who are you know coming into work on things like curriculum and that sort of thing so thanks to everybody who's continuing to think about us and enjoy the last two weeks of your summer that's it for me um next superintendent's remarks okay so we have a few uh remarks tonight the first um our new Beekman principal is here with his family tonight Chris carranto so congratulations and welcome aboard very happy to have you back with us Chris was approved at a special meeting in July um

008associated with the board retreat uh we we did that because we needed wanted to get him started as soon as possible so he came here tonight to visit with us so thank you and you don't have to feel obliged to stay but I think you probably already know that um secondly um I wanted to acknowledge our high school we had uh 28 out of our 32 High School athletic teams met the New York state public high school sports Association criteria um for a scholar athlete recognition meaning that the that Arlington High School was one of um I believe 28 schools in the state that um were recognized as a school of excellence so that's that's certainly a testament to Graham and our students our students Families Our coaches um for being able to prioritize and

009balance their participation in their Athletics their participation in their academics rather and uh then I also wanted to just follow up and let you know that we did have a meeting yesterday the board on July 11th asked us to look into the feasibility of bringing graduation back onto campus and we had an initial meeting with several members of the high school administration security sheriff's department and started to run through some of the things that we would need to consider in order to bring bring the graduation event uh to campus and we have a follow-up meeting on September 14th long story short we think it's possible um there are some challenges and some things that we'll need to work through but we would work through a proposal and be able to share with you the pros

010and cons of that and um uh uh where we would shoot for being able and I'll and I'll talk with Marianne about this and Linda about this and uh get your input if if you would like but ideally we would like to shoot for October 25th to either bring a proposal to the board um or to ask the board to approve a proposal if indeed it looks like it's going to be possible for us to do this um so that we have enough time to plan and make arrangements at at the stadium if if we do indeed end up going back there so anyway it was a very initial preliminary conversation with the fact that we were able to work through some of the public safety and parking um concerns that we had it does

011make it look like we could do this but there are definitely a lot of things that we still have to plan for so we're going to work on that and bring you more information and then oh go ahead no I just wanted to say thank you oh yep no problem you're welcome I mean um I think ideally we would all like to have it here it's just a matter if we can make that work so um we will continue to keep you updated on um how that looks now the the thing that I wanted to talk about um has been tonight I I wanted to bring this this forward tonight because it's been um in process going back to the spring a board a board conversation that was had in the spring and we had

012our budget process and some follow-up planning meetings uh with uh vendors and and different groups of people over the course of um late spring and early summer and we're ready to sort of share with you an update on where we're at with uh recommended District upgrades for Safety and Security that we would want to include in our budget planning process for the following School Year's budget so in the information that is in your packet um I explained that that collectively as a team we think that door security should be our initial priority and one of the things that would be most costly would be to double vestibule entrances which is something that we would uh need to plan for as part of um Master facilities plan and any upgrades that come through community support for

013a referendum so while we well that's a priority for us financially that's something that we have to plan for in a different type of way and that's not something that we could include to budget for in the next school year in the next uh the 24-25 budget but before I talk about the things that we do want to plan for in the budget I do want to highlight the fact that there were many many upgrades that were made in this year's budget so for example we are initially estimated that we would want to increase our our video camera capacity by about 75 additional cameras and we ended up um we ended up uh increasing the total amount this year uh by 68. so that was something that you know we had we estimated about what

014we thought we would need um and uh as we talked to all the principals visited all the buildings we did make an investment in this year's budget for an increase of 68 cameras we um also there was um uh there was an interest in moving away from wanting people at athletic events because the lines were long it was difficult to get get people in the doors and uh going to the um uh a concealed weapon detection system where people could just walk through like a gate like an over like an arch so we we purchased two of those those will be here for the football season and those are portable so that we can use those for any any events where we have um the public they're not they won't just be confined to the

015football field or any one specific area on campus so those are a couple things that that we have done for this year um and we uh we would like to propose that for the next school year that we consider in the budgeting process moving to some um door a jar um uh alert systems where if doors are left open in in different parts of the high school building um there would be an automatic notification that goes to the people that are monitoring the system our security people in our Administration to help secure the doors around the building where kids are getting in and out during passing periods or letting other people in entrances where they shouldn't be coming into the building Etc so that's one thing we would like to plan for another thing we

016would like to plan for is something that's called a cast system and it is um a uh type of thing almost like your ID badge would have a code on it so so uh people would scan when they go into the building so they would just you know hit their thing on the way in and it would buzz and it would be very it would be almost instantaneous so there would not be a lot of delays getting kids in the building we uh took a look at different schools that already do this and the recommendation that would be coming forward would be to get seven of these um portable devices in the first year and we could monitor that see if we think we need more see if we want to do that in following

017years at at the middle schools but they would be at domain student entrances in the morning when the kids are arriving and the kids would scan into the building then during the day security Personnel around the building strategically where we have high traffic areas would have these devices during the day because those other doors would be locked and so kids that are going in and out of appointments and things like that go through the main entrance at that point in time and that way kids would scan into the cafeterias or if we have kids that are Meandering around the halls that aren't where they belong we would have the ability to monitor um monitor what's going on in the hallways a lot better one of one of the things we are having some trouble with

018at the high school is an excessive number of students in the hallway um when they really should be somewhere else so this serves two purposes it helps secure the doors at the main congestion times when people are entering the buildings and also would help security Personnel monitor traffic in the building during the day so those are two major purchases that we would want to include in our budgeting for 24.25 and the third which is not part of door security um and is not necessarily um a major expense it's only seven thousand dollars but it would be we would install shades on Doors door windows so that if there were a lockdown situation these things the shades would go down immediately automatically and help secure the people in the building so that Intruders would not know

019where different people are and be able to see into classrooms so those are the main things um that that we would like to consider in our budgeting plans for the followings for 24-25 budget and this was based on information that was presented to the this to the board's health and safety Committee in the spring so much of what was presented was already taken care of in this year's budget um most of the rest of what we are um we think should be priorities we would want to plan for for 24-25 budget so I said I would bring an update to you with some more precise costs and some um uh and after there was some further study and that's what I've done so um I think that we're establishing a district health and safety committee

020we can you know we'll certainly be bringing recommendations forward to the budgeting process and I can answer questions if you have them but I felt that um we've been trying to follow up on that and you know we just haven't had board meetings for a while in the summer Etc and so I wanted to wanted to share where we're at with that I think we have a question over here the 68 cameras are they all for the high school no no there were buildings across entire District summit summit uh some elementary schools but most of them uh were at the high school and the middle schools thank you Larry it mine's kind of a question kind of a comment um I I looking at the brochures it looked like the pictures on the IDS were

021the whole idea it was much much bigger and I really liked that I'm assuming that that's correct because you know I could give my ID to uh to Jeff and you wouldn't be able to tell us a part although he's much better looking uh if you're a security guy looking quickly but if um if it's a much bigger picture I think that that also is a huge Advantage well the the thing is when they scan too the people that are monitoring the door it does pop it does pop up and you know so there's there is a way now obviously um nothing's completely full proof but um we we did observe what other districts who have this system um uh how they utilize it how it works and they are security people in our high

022school administration think that we should move forward with this um we're hoping over time in addition to just the uh um securing who's in the building and where they're supposed to be that we could upgrade the usage uh to be something that would help us uh support our efforts to improve attendance and and um learn how to use this so that we might be able to use it for teachers we might be able to put devices indoors or or have them in teachers hands and and be able to do some things that make it easier to make sure that um kids are excused or um where they're supposed to be in class in a more in in real time and just easier to manage for teachers so there could be some there could be some

023ways we build off this down the road potentially as well okay on the Door Alerts and the cameras uh is there a plan about rotating the people that are watching those cameras because I could imagine I'd get a little monogamous at you know watching them all day long and and secondly the ID scans is that going to mean teachers will not necessarily have to think uh as attendance in as much as they've logged into them no this the the at some at one point there was some talk about trying to get enough devices for teachers get get get devices on doors bathrooms Etc we're not at that point yet so teachers will still have to take attendance but um but they're but we are going to study some potential to increase the use of this

024if we think it's working I think it has some potential in other areas anybody have any other questions so this is like a phase one roll out of this product I would say that was going to be my my question because there were so many so much functionality in the details you know so I think that's good at trying it out best well that's yes so you know if if we think it's working and we think we're getting some benefit from it then then we could look to expand it um to the middle schools the following year and as we use it the people that are using it are certainly going to learn how to um adjust things to make sure that it's as effective as possible um where it's best to um station people

025in the building and and um you know I I think that they will find that once they have them that they'll be able to use them for a variety of different purposes and and um and I and I think that's one of the reasons that they like the flexibility of this particular system is they think there is a lot of uh potential work thank you um does that conclude your remarks it does all right now I don't know did anyone sign up for public time no so I don't think we have one we do wait hold that wait wait wait then you have to hear what I say so you don't say anything inappropriate hold on public comment for agenda items only this is the first of two opportunities for people to address the board

026when your name is called from the speakers list for agenda items you may speak for up to three minutes on agenda items only your remarks must be addressed to the board all speakers must conduct themselves in a civil manner although we do not engage in dialogue we are listening comments about individual District Personnel or students is not permitted if you leave your contact information with Mrs Flynn our district Kirk the superintendent or one of his staff will contact you as soon as possible foreign publicly thank the board Dr Moyer and all the central Administration we're obviously on a short leash in terms of how long we can stay I'd like to be able to thank you afterwards but I don't think we're going to last that long so I am super super excited um I

027grew up in Arlington I went to Beekman K to five myself so I'm really excited to give back to the community that's created who I am today so that's kind of my passion here I'm in Arlington through and through and I appreciate the opportunity to come back and work in my own Community as you can see I have some of my children here who attend Arlington schools and uh that's just some just a few so I'm excited about that piece too like you know they see that dad's a part of the community and giving back as one of the mission statements speaks about giving back to the community that's what I highly value so thank you everyone appreciate it thank you [Applause] that's very nice moving on reports and discussion items first up Dr Moyer

028with portrait of a graduate okay so um the as part of the Arlington connect process we um initiated a portrait of a graduate committee that had 24 uh members uh comprised of uh parents teachers administrators community members Business Leaders local elected officials um very nice cross-section of people with different perspectives and backgrounds and they met four times and the goal of the committee was to develop a district portrait of a graduate that's a holistic representation of the attributes that um we would like our students to have when they graduate from high school the process started with the committee thinking about three Central questions what are our whole streams and aspirations for our children what skills and mindsets do our children need to be successful when they graduate from high school and what are the implications

029for the design of learning experiences for our children based on these and the committee as I said met four times so the topics of the meetings were basically to just have a general kind of um conversation and dialogue around how the world is changing and take a look at what types of 21st century competencies we think our our children would need and then we started to narrow down the competencies and uh ultimately selected A visual representation and a description of each competency the five competencies that we're bringing forward to the board are critical thinker adaptable citizen empathetic citizen Problem Solver and effective communicator and um Dr Gaines was the board rep on that committee so we had um a representative from the Board of Education and um so if she wants to speak to anything

030certainly I would welcome that um what I'd like to do is just show you a video that talks about our oh yeah absolutely yeah I think she was just I think she recalls that she stars in the video I think that's what it is she's got a supporting role in the video yeah yeah no I'm she she doesn't get any she's got no special credits other than being recognized the same as everybody else so she's a she's a co-star or something that's right um so I'd like to show a video that has several of the committee members speaking about the process and and the product and it is on um the agenda later under new business for approval uh before we show the video though Liam I just want to talk about a couple of

031the uh proposed next steps we're working with different groups of people from across the district to develop strategic indicators for each competency and what would happen uh once we have those is we would be able to develop the ability to set goals into that progress to track progress of our students throughout their time in our system and and see what we're doing um curricularly so we can we can create a measurement system but we can also use this to structure our professional learning structure our curriculum work with our um uh teams of teachers that we work with throughout the school year so there'll be a lot of purposes for this portrait and then also we are looking at something called School links which would help with career planning our career Pathways work that we're doing

032at the high school our our career counseling and this is this is a product that is very very rich in its um ability to support multiple functions across the district and this would be something that we would be able to use to help students create an electric portfolio where they could track their progress in these competency areas throughout their uh time in Arlington so so the the Strategic indicators and and the work toward an electronic portfolio are some of the things that would be next steps and an outgrowth of this initial uh portrait so I am um uh very uh thankful for the work that the committee did I want to express that publicly I think there was a lot of energy around the project and um the people uh really invested and I appreciated

033that they did great work and I think we have a really solid product to present to you so ready for the video can I ask a quick question before you see the video would you mind I don't know if anybody else has a question um I guess I have a couple of questions so we know how it is one question at a time right we have those those hard and fast rules um the Strategic indicators what are people currently like who's working on that like what what group of people is now working on that well initially initially um we had our leadership team at our Junior treat developed and draft indicators we got some feedback from you at the board retreat we got an addition around the feedback at the August Leadership Retreat um based

034on the draft based on the draft indicators our directors took sort of a big sort of brain dump of ideas in a Google Document and came up with um some potential indicators that we could use at the different grade level spans K2 three five six eight and then high school and what we want to do is we we want to fine-tune some of the language maybe we add some maybe we um take some away based on the feedback maybe we just revise them a little bit then we want to take them to some teacher teams across the district and work with people that um lead you know the literacy leaders the um different uh coordinators the different curriculum committees that we have so we so that we can get the teachers input on the extent

035to which that these can actually be reflected in the classroom if we miss the mark and it's not something that that you know you know if if we've missed something or if the teachers think that it needs to be reflected a little bit differently based on the work that they're doing to actually get at what we're trying to accomplish um the last the last step once we have a good final draft document would then be to run it back to all the teacher teams and teacher committees over the course of the the next several months and then I think we would have a pretty good a pretty good product to bring back to the board to say this is what we think our indicator should be and then ask you to to ultimately approve those

036okay does anybody else have any questions Ed how do you translate the indicators to the curriculum and what kind of timeline are we talking about well the first the first year I I think we would need to look at getting people acquainted with you know with the portrait and with the indicators and then I think that we could use those to start to be reflected in board goals and uh School Improvement goals and the individual PLC work of of the the different plcs that are functioning across the district what what I would what we initially said is that you don't have to come up with something new there are probably things that we're already doing that we would say these are priority standards in the district these are some um SEL things that we're doing

037with rethink or Panorama or Equity work or we you know one of the things we think this will dovetail nicely with you're gonna which you're going to hear more about today uh tonight is the Middle School advisory so what we want to do is we want to try to build this into the work that's going on and make it authentic for the people uh for the the everyday classroom experiences so um some of them are based on um State Standards some of them are you know can be based on research projects that go on um some of them can be based on future curriculum work where we refine our Curriculum maps to make sure that at different grade levels we have units that actually allow us to um demonstrate that our kids are are developing

038these competencies so I think there's a variety of ways that that the initial list came from but much of it like the responsive classroom and morning meeting work that's going on at the elementary school we try to get people to start with what are some things that we're already doing so they so that they could um imagine how to make the connections between the portrait and and the curriculum and not feel that that there was you know additional layers of things being added to the system anybody else but I may ask the second question okay yes I do right if someone else did anybody else have a question yeah all right bigger the portrait is the vision for the district so it wouldn't be a layer would it be representative of what we wanted students

039to be about who left the district yes I I would agree with that and so if that's the case then if it's for the all students for the whole child how do we ensure that we have a curriculum that would do just that all students and the whole child as as the as a vision for the district as we move forward well that that is part of what we want the portrait to be is is the guiding vision and the document that drives that work so if we have things that we say we want for our students and we start to have these conversations with teams of teachers and we realize that we need to make adjustments in different units or different ways that we um uh uh do things like um ensure that students

040feel welcome in the building or the the school-wide programs that we have about um you know respecting other people in the building and all those different types of things that are tied to these competencies we can verify that we're doing it we can verify that students are growing or if we're not doing it then we would have to make the appropriate adjustments to make sure that at the various different grade level spans these things are reflected in the student experience okay anyone else have a question and when will there be a timeline with the implementation part of it well I I put a draft implementation timeline in the um memo and what I said was fall 2023 we would start to bring this to teacher groups and the goal I would hope that by the

041end of the Fall we could finalize the indicators and that may be a little bit of a stretch depending on when our meetings are scheduled and how much input we need or where we're at in terms of levels of agreement of whether or not these things make sense but if we could get the indicators this fall that would be the goal um and then we would need to get people familiar with the competencies and as we do our work we would need to work with people to to ensure that they're reflected in our units in our in our standards reporting everything that we do um future in our Curriculum maps in our professional learning and then um I I would like to reconvene there were some members of the committee not everybody will be interested

042in this but there were some members of the committee that wanted to be apprised of how things are developing so I I would recommend reconvene the committee for those those who are interested to share with them where we're at with the Strategic indicators as one of the next steps and update them on on where we're at with The Graduate portfolio um and then spring spring and summer um if we if we get the indicators nailed down then hopefully we could use that as a way to guide some of the board conversations going into a board retreat over the summer Administration can get some direction from the board where things the priority should be based on how our kids are currently doing um and then as as we move into the following school year um we

043would want to try to develop a measurement and communication system based on the indicators once we have the indicators we could start that in the spring if the indicators are completed but that would start when the indicator process when the indicators are actually approved by the board and then throughout the next school year with our curriculum work and everything else and then ongoing we would get the electronic portfolio up and running and we would start to um we would start to be able to um get our buildings to establish more precise goals based on whatever direction we get from the board and hopefully all based on the graduate and all based on the indicators that we developed so I think we heard from Marriott do you have a question I just this just a help

044me understand either this past year two years ago at the convention I sat through a presentation by passport is that one of those electronic portfolios is that sounds good maybe I'm not sure but School links is something that um we we had a presentation and uh our counselors are excited about it our administrators are excited about it some of the teachers that were in on some of the early um early conversations about this product are excited about schoolings I don't know if passport does similar things but I think that School links is very very comprehensively probably the same sort of a thing just a different name okay because it did track a student's um extracurricular things or um Community involvement all those kinds of things and it was kept for each student electronically so it's

045got to be probably very similar well when I talked about the indicators and acknowledging the work that's already going on I'll give you one example I probably should have mentioned initially is the idea of seal of Civic Readiness that we're already doing if a student completes that project that's something that's you know completes that um um recognition that seal that that certainly is something that's consistent with um the concepts in the portrait so um that's an example where I would say we don't necessarily automatically we're not necessarily starting from scratch but we do want to have we do want to clearly articulate and make sure everybody in the organization is on the same page about this this is what we're striving for I have a question but does anyone else have one before I do

046um thank you um School School links you know from what Marion's talking about you're talking about it's got elements of Naviance to it is this a replacement of Naviance and would it be only 912 or would it be other grades no this this is something that could be used at different grade levels it wouldn't just be high school and well Naviance does not necessarily have to go away um if if there are people that still see value in it this is a lot more comprehensive Naviance is really more um narrowly focused on on Career planning this this includes career planning but it also includes a lot of different other features that could support uh different work across the district so are we where are we with with uh you said you received a presentation about

047schooling where are we there was a planning team that met a couple times to look at this uh last spring and really the first time anybody outside of that that that small group of people saw it was at the Leadership Retreat in August and so so there it's very much in its preliminary stages but I think that people see a lot of promise and I and I um the reason why I'm giving that as an example and the reason why we're doing indicators at all is because we want to put systems in place to support this so The Graduate the portrait of a graduate isn't just another thing that people stick on the wall and say oh we're doing this you know we we want to we we want this to actually really come to

048life so that as we move forward maybe the bortle hill a little more about schooling Stevie depending on what your proposal is is that what we're thinking well absolutely yeah we're we're not we're not ready we're not ready to bring anything of any sophisticated kind of nature to you in terms of a proposal but it is something that we're looking at and studying that we think has some promise thank you Ed yeah not so much a question Dave the timeline that you just laid out with not people attempt to to count the years seem like you're talking about an implementation of somewhere around 25 26. I would and I only say this because I'm a big fan of pog that I would uh I would be great if you could come up with a plan

049that accelerated the implementation of this because it becomes a vision of the district then it's we're seeing that it'd be worth a resources to accelerate the implementation of it well I'm all for accelerating implementation of it because I think it's important I I can't accelerate anything unless you actually prove it later by assuming that that happens um but I I do think that um I do think that I I would like to accelerate this but I just I don't want to over promise I know that we have teachers that um have a lot of things that they're coming into the school year thinking that they should be focusing on and so I want to make sure that we're sensitive to that and that we do this in a in a way where we can manage

050the work but I think that once we get teachers familiar with this and it starts to guide the work I think it can we can move along at a decent pace um I'm not sure how quickly we could develop the portfolio and I'm not sure how quickly we can make curricular adjustments or or um add or modify or subtract programming to make things consistent with the portrait but I think my vision would be that the work starts immediately this fall but I think I I think it would be hard for me to be able to guarantee and say this will be fully implemented you know by next fall or or you know give you a specific date if if we could have this if we could have like like a year one implementation in 24

05125 and maybe something that's close to a full implementation in 2526 that's something that is is um a little bit of a challenge but but I think doable but I but I I don't want to over promise exactly what's going to happen next year because we we don't have teachers we have teachers that haven't even seen this at all yet and that's what and I wouldn't ask you to commit uh but maybe I'll say his approach is is the right way to go but hey um he just sees if it's going to take on the Mantra of being being a vision for the district then it should be it's been a lot of the work is stuff that we're doing should tab back to that Vision so maybe there's a uh it becomes angle so

052and I don't I know the ton of models around as you said of the modern clgs and uh how they're being implemented etc etc but it would make sense to me that if if we could accelerated at least put a plan in place to show some acceleration into this phase year one year to year three that would be a very visible sign if that's the direction we're moving and everything should be all new initiatives should be vetted against that vision as illustrated by the people well that is a plan I mean I said to Daisy I said every time every time you have a meeting with your curriculum people this should be in the middle of the table you know I mean this would be the type of thing where when when teachers go to

053their plcs and plan their units I would want this in front of people to so I mean you and I I believe have the same idea of what we want this to be all right I can't wait to get to that vote um or the video or the video co-starring well it makes you feel better but it's not working let's move on is it going to show in the video at home for our viewers Liam you're sure okay thank you foreign [Music] ton Central School District portrait of a graduate is a holistic representation of the qualities our community thinks our students need to be successful in life upon graduation from high school portrait of a graduate serves as a valuable resource for educators by providing a Clear Vision promoting collaboration and supporting student development it

054empowers Educators to better prepare students for their future we asked for volunteers to inform the committee the committee included a cross-section of people that represented government business local colleges as well as of course our parents teachers administrators and board members cool and an HR professional the portrait of a graduate was a wonderful opportunity to explore the characteristics that we hope all of our graduates will have when graduating from Arlington over the course of the four Mains the portrait committee identified five competencies these competencies are critical thinker adaptive citizen empathetic citizen Problem Solver and effective Communicator the committee believed that each of our high school graduates should leave Arlington High School with these five important competencies all of these um competencies were whittled down from a larger list but what was so cool was that everybody

055really came together they worked together the way we hope our kids will one day the portrait of a graduate will benefit our district and of course our students by teaching our students some things that maybe not naturally comes easy to them okay so we're not all born knowing how to communicate or uh what Integrity is or problem solving and if this is included in our classroom curriculum or different books that our students read or different examples in the classroom they're going to learn how to effectively communicate for example when they leave the high school so I think all the competencies will definitely impact that younger at a younger age we talk a lot about problem solving even with our youngest Learners communication is something we talk a lot about with our with our Learners as

056well using your words so for a five-year-old it might look different than when you're 17 or 18 years old but when we if we work on and focus instilling it now by the time they graduate they graduate high school we're going to have Global well-rounded citizens that have gone through Arlington Central School District the hope is is that they will take all of what they learned on the academic side and use these specific characteristics the skills that they learn about being good citizen that they will be contributing members of our society many of our students don't leave Dutchess County and they will of course live here and we've quite potentially raised their own family and their students could come to Arlington in the future in this ever-changing workplace and with the Advent of technology and

057now what we're seeing is AI I think the portrait of a graduate is an important initiative to find those core competencies and those attributes that we want our future Arlington students to have in order to make change impactful change in the world and find meaningful work by learning how to collaborate and communicate effectively students can contribute positively to community initiatives and engage in opportunities to address real world problems since this process allowed us to come together and collaborate and figure out what do we really want our future Workforce to look like and as parents what do we want our children to come out of school with and be able to to learn I think the portrait of a graduate allows a road map for kids coming in in kindergarten for the families for the community

058to understand what what is in store for them what the opportunities they have going through Arlington Central School District the portion of a graduate is really saying when our kids graduate of course they're going to have academics behind them but these are qualities as human beings that we wanted to see them portray the portrait of a graduate is about all of our students in grades K-12 not just our seniors some of them our next steps will include working on developing strategic indicators at second fifth eighth grade and Senior grade levels and then working to help develop an electronic portfolio that students can use to demonstrate all the great work that they've done over the course of their career in Arlington so now you understand why I was not accepted into the journalism school at Syracuse

059but um but I think it's um I think it was great work by the committee so once again I want to thank them you know full advisory can you talk a little bit about what middle school advisories are foreign [Music] okay so good evening everyone um I want to give everyone an update on Middle School advisories and you know for those who may not know exactly what we're doing with it and and where we are with it I wanted to talk about what it is and what we hope to gain from the program so Middle School advisories uh the missile advisory program this year we're hoping to further address the social emotional skills as a tier one program at both middle schools focusing on the castle competencies so that's the social emotional learning competencies that

060are um that we that we follow as a district in PPS so some of the benefits of social emotional um learning is that it it leads to improved academic achievement when students have supportive relationships and opportunities to develop and practice social emotional and cognitive skills across many different contexts academic learning accelerates hundreds of studies involving more than a million students worldwide across pre-k through 12 offer consistent evidence that SEL has positive impact on students academic achievement students participating in SEL at school have higher levels of school functioning as reflected by grades test scores attendance and homework completion scl builds uh social and emotional skills that increase student engagement and lead to improved academic performance and scl interventions that address the five core competencies increase students academic performance by 11 percentile points compared to students who

061did not participate so the positive impact on academics lasts long term years after students have participated in Social and emotional learning their academic performance was an average of 13 Health points higher than students who did not participate so in order to promote a greater sense of belonging as a district you know we've weathered a lot of emotional serious emotional issues these last few years much like the rest of the world um what we've done was we have started meeting with both middle schools um in conjunction with the CIA office so thank you to Dr Rodriguez and Dr contest Mr Orcutt it's been very much a joint effort between the offices we started to look with the Middle School leadership teams a few weeks ago right before they left for the summer at some of the

062data points like the Panorama surveys discipline and referrals um the teams are comprised of Administrators PPS staff who um you know are obviously familiar with all this work and we do this a lot and um and teachers and going forward they've decided that um they're going to have an advisory that will be monthly that will be at each building will choose their own goals based on all the data that we've worked through together and that they're going to use their rethink platform to uh choose which lessons focus on which social emotional competencies they are going to work towards so they're going to choose a goal or two based on all that data that we work through with them together that they'll work through with their staff and come up with as a staff as their

063own um you know unique staff which goals they're going to work towards and then they will choose the lessons that will happen each month during the year so as always we hope that teaching these skills which may have been misdevelopmentally due to covid and other issues will help students cope with their struggles productively so um just some of the research again on some of the SEL programs um we're trying to reduce catastrophic outcomes on mods of pregnancies arrests for violent crimes dropping out of high school effective programs are um great for getting kids to thrive and have less stress Better Health and a greater love of learning these programs make adolescents specifically feel respected by adults and peers and offer them a chance to gain status and admiration in the eyes of people whose opinion

064they value Google ah so we went through some of the bullying pieces because obviously in middle school that's a lot of what we see a lot of bullying behaviors because you know it's a developmental time of life when kids are vying for you know where they where their status is in the school so we want to teach a lot of things about upstandard behaviors and how to um you know sort of help someone when you see them in need right so a lot of times people will just walk by when they see something and they don't say anything because they have not yet been taught how to intervene appropriately so being an upstander might be a goal that one of the middle schools might choose to really focus on after they look at all their

065data and how many bullying and bullying incidents they've they've experienced throughout the year um we used a protocol like I said to look at during the planning they're going to then take that protocol and use it at the buildings with their teams to also plan which goals they're going to work towards and you know again we're trying to reduce the referrals reduce the fights reduce the bullying um and through the direct instruction we're hoping to see those Panorama surveys and the feelings of wellness and belonging raise in our students so I think that'll probably be a really um good concretized goal that the schools can work towards because we give those surveys you know at regular intervals and we've been given them for the last few years so I think that you know that might

066be another data point that we're going to look at as evidence of success so I'm hoping that when I come back let's say in January they'll have had about four or five advisories at that point we'll be starting to see some evidence of you know few referrals more students feeling connected to the building and you know fewer fights and fewer other things like that so just so you can see this is what we're doing we're doing this plan do study Act to get to those five Castle competency areas emotion regulation self-efficacy self-management self-awareness and social perspective are the five they're not going to focus on all five each school will probably choose one maybe two to focus on because again we want to go deeper and have the kids really understand and those are just

067some links that I did uh one of the nice things about the rethink program is that it builds in all the lesson plans which I think I've attached to you all at the board but it builds in the lesson plan so once the team decides this is the goal we're working towards this is the we're working on emotion regulation and these are the lesson plans we're going to be using it's all there for the teachers they don't they can use all the resources are self-contained the videos the activities The Homeschool connection links so parents know what's going on um it's all there for them so the teachers don't have to do additional work they can really focus on connecting to the students and getting to know the kids really really well so that's what we're

068working towards in advisors thank you any questions mark yeah uh on the bullying the the term upstander is that something that we've developed or is that standard it sounds kind of clinical it's it's a newer term it's a it's a castle competency term right so instead of you know just a lot of people are bystanders we want people to stand up for one another so we call them upstanders I don't know where it originated from that's a great question but it is one of those terms that is a very um popular Castle term so maybe maybe Castle invented it I don't know Kelly I see you moving um in terms of bullying and also in terms of mental health what are we doing to educate teachers about issues uniquely facing transgender students and then what

069are we doing to address issues you know about bullying with the transgender students so I can say that this past year we've had glsen come in for our PPS staff to start to reignite that work so they came in and did eight hours of work with all of the clinicians you know which is where it really starts from because they are sort of the leaders of their buildings when it comes to students who have you know who are on the spectrum of lgbtq so that's our first step we have several including myself several of us I saw at some of the buildings were doing book clubs for the adults so Equity book clubs I'm doing um an lgbtq book club so we're trying to come at it from a perspective of again who wants to

070be part of this and who really wants to take this ownership um there are lots of people at the schools who are really invested in the work but it starts with their ppsf right now how to get it further out is really you know part and parcel of what CPS staff does with the buildings with their with the kids with the teachers with the we have a GSA Club at the high school you know that's that's the hard part is like you know you have to sort of get everyone who wants to come along and have everybody come along with them but you can't force everything but it comes from a perspective of we want everyone to feel like they belong right so it's not just about this person or that person or that race

071or that gender or that identification it's like we want to stand there for everybody who feels like they don't belong so I think if we come from the language and and the social emotional piece of if you see something say something help a friend you know help not a friend even if you don't know one another but teaching kids to put themselves in that place and giving them the language for what to say when they see something that's wrong is really the first step it's also in each lesson for the rethink there's a teacher lesson so the teacher also has a video that they can watch to help them understand and learn as well how to again proactively when they see two kids you know saying things that they don't like the language they can

072use so we're trying to come at this from a bunch of different ways but the nice thing about everything is that it has the teacher portion as well as the student portion as well as the parent portion it's for it's all encompassing seems like it would be you know a good discussion for the principals to have at the different schools because I know that there are situations where maybe people say things that they think are harmless and I think that everyone needs to be educated if this is a new area so I mean not just students but also yeah adults like I said we started with all the PPS Staff last year was eight hours it was a big lift to get the eight hours um but again that's a group that is generally you

073know really excited about that work um they do great work around the county we've had um I'd like to bring them in more it's hard but you know we can talk about it for other kinds of learning days for the for the adults in the building but it's it's a big lift but I agree it's it's you know like I said I'm doing the book club so if anybody wants to sign up it's in my learning plan anyone else anybody have any questions thank you Jill sure next up is Daisy with Elementary teaming Pilots I was going to say plots but that's not it that sounds like a novel so good evening everyone um in your packets you have some slides um and like a one-page or summary of the teaming model um I won't

074be going through the slides so I'll just keep you giving a brief overview of what was included um so two years ago we as a district partner with the learning 2025 national network uh learning 2025 is a network of over 200 school districts that are learning from each other and looking for ways to innovate the way that we do schooling for for kids last year a team of Administrators and teachers joined the next education learning cohort and the next education learning cohort is led by the department of innovation at Arizona State University and members of The Learning 2025 Network and then through this national network we learned about just different ways that schools across the country are scheduling and looking at schooling differently um so we've all experienced the elementary school teachers in particular have

075been really overwhelmed with the amount of Demands being placed on them we know that Elementary classroom teachers typically teach all subjects and that they're assigned to and they have to find ways to be all things to all Learners Arizona State University has taken the lead nationally to research and support schools and different ways that we can meet student needs they found that students in team-based classrooms have better attendance and they tend to have higher grades than students that are in a traditional one classroom model Arizona State also found that teachers reported feeling more supported and felt a stronger sense that their lessons were stronger because they were able to focus on less subjects at a time when we brought back these ideas to our schools there were teacher teams that were very interested in learning

076more about this model and they found they thought that this would be a solution to some of the feelings that they were having as far as feeling overwhelmed the meeting the needs of kids so fifth grade teachers at Titusville Intermediate School and Arthur S May volunteered to launch a teaming model for this coming school year at Titusville there are six fifth grade teachers and they are planning to form two teams of three teachers each and at Arthur S may they will be forming one team of four teachers um the teacher to student ratio will remain the same because we're had the same Staffing um uh so it'll be about 22 students per teacher ratio in the teaming model the teachers will share responsibility for all the students on their team one teacher will specialize in

077math and the other teachers in the team will teach Humanities and science this approach allows teachers to personalize learning to the individual needs of students and allow students to learn reading and writing skills through the content areas of science and social studies so for example while fifth graders learn about narrative writing in the TC units of study they can practice writing narrative essays about European exploration in social studies or write about Space Systems in science or during the argument and advocacy TSC unit of study students can read about economics in the Western Hemisphere and social studies or they can read about the Earth's Earth Systems and science so we'll be able to see more interdisciplinary projects happening in the content areas um when thinking about the classroom environment the teaming model has a strong focus

078on collaborative and project-based learning students will have access to flexible Furniture which will allow students to move around the room and work how they learn best some students may work fast as standing at a desk While others may prefer to kind of wobble in their chair so they'll have some wobble chairs or even sitting at a couch to do their best work in Titusville we have also opened up a door to connect classrooms on the team so that students can move from one classroom to the other throughout the school day depending on what they're working on we do not plan to have any open concept classrooms since we feel that some separation is necessary between classes academic enrichment we know that all of our Elementary classrooms across the district have 40 minutes every day of

079academic intervention or enrichment time in the teaming model that teachers on the team along with the academic intervention teachers they can divide the students across the entire team instead of just across that one class so this allows students across a grade level to be grouped during this period for targeted intervention or targeted enrichment depending on on how they're progressing one teacher can focus on reteaching that math lesson that some kids in the class in the in the team didn't uh learn well another teacher might go more advanced if the students in in that group um already Master the concepts the academic intervention teacher would still be able to pull small groups of students for more intensive support while the rest of the class were to the teachers on the team so everyone would be available

080during that same time some of the support for the teaming model would be adding a point person so it would be a team leader so every team would have a team leader similar to the middle schools that we have now this would be a stiped in position and that team leader would facilitate team meetings meet regularly with the building principal and the director of Elementary so they're the point person between central office the principal and the team but it's important that the team itself really leads themselves as really teacher-led and that's funded through the district Improvement Grants that we receive um common planning time so part of working in a team they have to really talk every single day to be able to make sure they're checking up on pacing and and the curriculum um

081so the teachers on the team would have common planning time every day to talk about the kids talk about the curriculum talk about pacing um and they'll have PLC meetings um once once every six day cycle so that's when those to start looking at um how students are performing on the standards and make adjustments as needed and then professional learning uh the teachers will have a bill will be able to attend Arizona State University virtual training sessions along with training from from central office as well so that's just a brief overview of the teaming model and I already have any questions thank you very much Larry I know it's early days and just a pilot but do you anticipate that if um if teaming took off somewhat that uh team members would be involved in

082hiring of colleagues that would be joining their own team I know that currently principals do involve their teachers in the hiring process especially if it's someone they're going to be working with directly so that would make sense it's important that in the teaming model that they are a cohesive team and they're working together so I imagine that would take place I think he was first the Duets mark assuming this teaming proposal works out uh do you see in the future are we looking more for people that are specialists uh in in the classroom on a particular discipline as opposed to across the board uh and what about when the uh one of the Specialists is on the long-term absence what happens we're definitely looking for ways that we can relieve some of the the burden

083on the elementary teachers in particular right so as Elementary School teacher I still remember my first teaching job in fifth grade and being very strong in math and science and not so great in social studies um and so we know that naturally we're all stronger in some areas than others so this um this model provides an opportunity to cater to teachers friends right and allow them to work together um to meet the needs of kids because we know that our kids come to us with many many different needs and having a team approach is probably stronger than having just one team have everything and that one teacher um so we are looking for teachers to specialize if that's something that they that they would like to focus on but also be able to look at

084the bigger picture along with with the team absences absences if they're absent long term how do you what happens to the students that they would typically see and also when they're planning with their peers yeah so this model actually really helps with that and that's one of the things that Arizona state had has pointed out because after covet and hearts of Staff schools um in the model these three or four teachers they all know the kids right they all know the kids on that team so if one of the teachers has to go on and leave they still have a connection with all the remaining teachers and if a substitute teacher comes in then they will be supported by the rest of the team so it actually does help us when we do have those

085unexpected absences Ed these are the uh will the seat time change for students so no the school day Still Remains the Same we're just kind of shuffling where they go to for the time subject matter change no it doesn't change so the same minutes for that they're currently receiving They will receive in the in the teaming model the only exception to that we would integrate um instead of having an independent 50-minute social studies block and then 45 minutes separate for writing for example we can put the time together and they have more time to learn about both they're applying their writing skills to science for example and did I understand you to say that the Staffing is a zero-sum game the only um piece that we're adding is a stipend position so the there's a

086thousand dollar stipend that would go along with the team leader position but the Staffing else everything else Remains the Same when we did Staffing at the middle school it was it required more staff why is this different I don't have the exact details but it at the middle school level it it just works out to be different with the the way the the classes are broken up um at the middle school level you have different tracks as well so some students have to go into the accelerated classes while other students um are not um so you have to schedule a certain way it doesn't always work out to be even um at the fifth grade level we don't have different levels of classes so we can just equally divide the classes and divide it equally

087by three or four depending on the number of sections Larry just a comment uh I it was probably shocking but in 1965 uh in the Quaker Hill School uh I was a team student um and I um of course uh loved all of my teachers but you know after my math class I so loved getting into science and I felt like you know that I was not just an idiot um that that having a different person in your life uh during the course of the day can be a real benefit to students um you know when you have you know you have those years where you get the teacher that you just don't click with and I think it could be really great for that yeah exactly so that every every student on the team

088will have multiple adults that they can potentially connect with on different levels and teachers that may be super passionate about science or math or literacy um so it does help with that great I lead well first it makes me sad I retired but how today how are you measuring this program so different ways one of the things that we feel this will do is have students um really get what they need right because we're going to have a team of people looking and talking about every student's progress on a daily basis so we expect to see students reporting higher levels of belonging in the school setting having relationships with adults that they can trust so our SEL data we expect to be higher our attendance data we expect to be higher and their and their

089student and their performance I also believe that the teachers will also be happier because they'll be able to really focus and hone in on the subjects that they're really really care about and passionate about and so are you going to in some way ask them like are you going to survey those teachers or just have them report on on their satisfaction with it yes and and remember the teachers that are signed up now they they're the ones that wanted to do this and they've been really excited about it um so we haven't figured out exactly what kind of survey would ask the teachers themselves but with the students we would use the Panorama data that we already have and kind of compare and I just have one quick question which is so there is no

090tracking of kids so the kids will all be learning sort of tier one at the same but I mean certainly for interventions you might do things differently is that yeah for interventions they would be grouped depending on whatever we're seeing that week right um so the students could be kind of shuffled around depending on what their needs are and then does it I assuming that the time all works out right you know if it uh like your math teacher is supporting is supporting the humanities teacher while they're the Lead Teacher is that kind of the dynamic of the room so the math teacher would have to teach math the whole day just the way it works out because it's 60 Minutes of math okay um and then plus the intervention period okay so that the

091children are rotating through units so that so that the teacher will still get three sections of children but instead of doing several things through the day they're gonna do almost like middle school and they're gonna teach three sections of math correct and those are not going to be differentiated is that is that true so during the tier one the regular lesson they're going to mixability groups okay but then during the intervention period That's when they'll divide them up depending on the needs okay thank you and we have the capacity in the future so if this takes off and those two teams are in those two buildings so excited and happy um is it a top-down approach you start with fifth grade and we go down through the grades yes sir for this year it just

092works it was by chance that it just happened to be fifth two fifth grade teams that decided that they were really interested in this um but ideally we would want to see who's interested in doing this it's important that there's a desire from the teachers to work as a team so we're hoping that during the school year people that are interested in seeing it we already have other schools that have reached out saying asking to to find out more um so we would definitely bring people over to check it out and see if that's something that they would want to do great thank you anybody else okay I'm just old enough to remember that we wanted the middle schools uh did team in any other middle school did not and both swore about what what

093pushback why are you doing a pilot and do you if there's pushback what what pushback would you expect so we were not planning on launching launching this this coming year um but when we went to visit Arizona State and when we brought teachers along and and we started kind of exposing people to the concepts they it really came from the teachers like we want to do this this is going to be really great for for us uh and the kids um so I think the the main obstacle would just be making sure that the team is working together right cohesively you know we know that sometimes that's a challenge so making sure that they're working together as a team that they're constantly communicating and planning together um and and making sure that they're constantly monitoring

094how the kids are progressing um because all of this is Project based they're really dependent on each other right so it can't be that you're operating on your own in the classroom they have to really work together so that would be a a barrier for this to work so so there's nothing functional it's just a calculated implementation right a lot of training as well and planning thank you thank you very much thank you so now we're going to move on to our new business section of the agenda our new business section of the agenda lists several items for individual resolution approval documentation consider these item has been provided to our board members in advance to assure an extensive and thorough review so so great uh Item B portrait of a graduate um we're voting on

095this right yes yeah there's no vote space on this but that's okay we'll just I will just wait I don't know why there's not a resolution attached to a district it's a test I think it's a test because because I'm such a I think all you have to do is make a resolution to approve it as presented yeah um could I have a resolution to approve the portion of graduate as presented slow move second Mark Larry uh all those all in favor I'm really tired all in favor aye opposed abstentions motion passes you know they write no on this thing and they really need to write the words that I need to say because I'm just saying that's going to be a change we're going to have next time okay moving on Code of Conduct

096approval when I get a motion to approve the code of conduct second all those in favor aye aye opposed seed motion passes um okay uh approval of the curriculum instruction committee um may I get a motion so moved second all is a favor oh actually any discussion I'm getting better um I I just want to say you know for all those listening you know we're improving tonight two new board committees which we hope will allow us to do some important work and bring that back to this group it's just a subcommittee nothing gets decided in some committee but they do really important work to collect information for us as a whole so we're excited about this area um all those in favor passes approval of the facilities and capital Improvement committee who who did the

097first one mark all those in favor opposed of sentence motion passes um okay approval of Board of Education committee members there's a whole list in here um can I uh can I please get a motion no move second all those in favor oh any discussion I actually have a comment I want to make I want to thank you all we worked on this at uh at Retreat and I think we're pretty pleased with how it turned out I just want to also say what's not included on this is that uh Mr McCormick has agreed to be our board representative to the new District health and safety committee which is not the same as our subcommittee so I'm happy for that and I'm I'm gonna appoint we haven't figured out exactly how we were going to

098handle Equity but between then and now we did and I'd like to appoint Eileen snook is our District representative to the equity committee so there's just a little information for you you're not really voting on that but what the heck are the interest of transparency yes the technical change this should be that the board members appointed at the discretion of the president Karen so the members are not we approve the meetings the court president performance so uh so do you want me to say that differently or does it require a resolution I think is what he's saying the resolution too I don't think we've done a resolution on this before yeah no I think I think yeah it's been reported before yeah so for people to see but it is a it says the uh

099the assistant reporters sure not voting is that what you're trying to say no vote necessary appointment of the chair and we could just say that in Minnesota support the chairs of uh front the following member City all right excellent so I think we're good then all right great um okay infg decoration of emergency LaGrange element from Lagrange Middle School room 209 flooring can I get uh motion so movement here either yeah second please discussion because uh any discussion all those in favor aye opposed abstentions motion passes we have voting things where we don't need them and you know things that we do we're a little messed up here um future discussion items uh I don't think we have any to go over from previous meetings but does anyone have any new future discussion items they'd

100like to bring up today I have one request and it may be just an amnesty in all of the paperwork but have we seen a report on the uh covet spending the 14 15 million dollars is uh if if not I would request that we see the reporting of uh of the uh spending by um by recipient by a purpose by amount each summary fashion okay we'll put that on um what do we do why don't we do this I think we've done this before why don't we see if that's just readily available information could just be a private Provide support which I think it might be if not we'll discuss it next time at the next meeting I would not think that we just spend it and not have to report it to someone

101correct I don't remember seeing it at the board levels until in summer okay we will get back to you on that I have a question Marianne so for future discussion items I think we discussed having a discussion about Equity at The Retreat did we say that was going to be a cow or I I I I don't have that I don't have that specific recollection in that way but we certainly we are developing our calendar right now and so there's no reason why I mean we certainly have you know uh we certainly hear on uh Equity presentations throughout the year so if we want to do any kind of a review of that we could certainly run it by the group and see where where that flies when we do the calendar the calendar is

102next on my list which is you know laying out the calendar for the year uh so you're putting there that you uh I thought we were just gonna sort of dig into that in a little more detail and that's when we were saying maybe we would have a separate discussion okay why don't we see where that goes okay yeah um the business consent anybody else I don't need to put anybody else everybody else good this is consent agenda our consent section of the agenda lists several items for approval by a single motion documentation concern these items has been provided to our board members in advance to assure an extensive and thorough review can I get a motion on the consented agenda so moved I have a question discussion yes so I'm curious what does it

103mean when for some of these advisors what item can you can you call the item sure so the co-curricular appointments for 23 24 school year Arlington High School no they're not really what oh gee yeah it's under G so some of these advisors says volunteer so does that mean they don't get a stipend and then why would that be that some of the advisors get a stipend and others don't for example Club advisor volunteer jewelry Mission AHS Nursery ping pong say no to animal cruelty science research Club student athletic Council teaching science Asian American Pacific Islander group all those advisors seem to be volunteer Admiral players volunteer so are they not getting paid and why they're not getting paid Paul it seems to have clarification it could be generally speaking each level is allocated a

104certain number of clubs and then when they get to the point where they don't have any more clubs that we can allocate allocate a stipend for then then folks will volunteer sometimes folks just volunteer because they want to volunteer and and they want to participate um it might it would depend I'd have to look into a specific one if you're curious all right that just there just seemed to be so many of them yep yep so I I am curious because I know the kids could go around and start a club because my daughter was trying to actually resurrect the Relay for Life Club you know and that that is potentially stipended actually but it's like a bear I guess to run nobody would do it but they if they get somebody to sign on

105they can start a club right so it could be that they're going to a teacher that they have a nice relationship with or that they've talked about the issues with and that they're they're helping them start a club right but is the issue that there can only be 20 clubs at the high school and that could be something that the board could address by giving approval for 30 clubs at the high school it just seems that if you're you know a teacher hard at work and then you're helping out one of these committees yeah actually the the uh I you know I was involved with the emerald player for a long time on their advisory Council I'm actually surprised she doesn't get a stipend for that job because I know that uh people get stipends

106for set building and stuff and and the music for the production so this is this is a contractual thing and you know since we're currently in negotiations there maybe an opportunity to do something relative to these types of things and so I I we'll talk about another time I would do that yeah I mean but I I agree with you I think that you know there there's there's a need to revisit um what's happening relative to clubs okay let's type in something but we're comfortable are we comfortable moving forward with this list as it is to get things started yes okay so uh on the consent agenda we have a motion in a second already I believe somewhere here yes I have I have a motion in a second um more discussion my bad sorry

107Mark uh I want to speak to uhm um uh this would be this is prolary Roberto uh I've known Hillary for at least 20 years when she worked at the high school you look in the dictionary under excellent administrator to see her picture I want to congratulate her and also uh thank the district in general for uh promoting for move-in especially and that's one person that's my comments thank you thank you Hillary she's also a kidney buddy think about donating your kidneys every chance I get thank you okay any other discussions on the consent agenda all those in favor against abstain motion passes so I was um I was going to say this under superintendent remarks at the end but since it came up and since a certain person might actually want to leave before

108the end of the meeting I will give her her 10-year pin now thank you so much thank you yeah well we're tough Hillary and everyone else we'll keep going for another 20 minutes maybe just one page left but we're unpredictable congratulations um that will be on to number 11. public comment for non-again items I don't believe we have anyone does anyone want to speak do I have anyone on my no excellent so I'm not reading I think that's okay all right committee reports let's see policy nothing at this time um audit Finance uh October sometime in October once we get the reports okay uh advocacy um no we'll schedule a meeting for September after we get the resolutions booklet from Elizabeth excellent other than that nothing health and safety I have been committee there's some

109life support and I lead us to uh to try to uh structure of meeting as quickly as possible to meet the uh I think of commitment to report back to the board in October and November November I think November yeah yeah and we're just moving towards something if it you know we're all busy but hopefully by then that'd be nice and then I don't know if we want to hear from our two newest committees I don't know if they would like to say anything curriculum instructions nothing at this time don't make me say curriculum too many times I'm a little tired I uh Construction or whatever it is financing I believe it's uh facilities facilities that's the word facilities and capital projects um were uh in progress nothing to report thank you you're all going

110to miss mark because he said he doesn't laugh during these things so whatever sorry about that organizational reports here we go Dutchess County School boards actually there is organizational meeting this Thursday night that I'm going to attend I'll let you know what comes to that Arlington Education Foundation our first meeting is September 6th okay PTSA not yet uh that's just kind of BOCES I don't have an update right now wanted to connect nothing at this time excellent uh does anybody else represent an organization that I've forgotten excellent superintendent's closing remarks well I um acknowledge Hillary once again um and also want to say that I am personally very excited about the uh two instructional programming enhancements that you heard about tonight the advisory and the teaming and I want to thank you for your support

111of the portrait um I think that's going to be something that's going to be important to the district and I'm glad that people feel good about the work that's been done so far great thank you very much uh Ford reflections seeing none of calling for a German they have an emotion to adjourn second that was Ed and Mark right all those in favor that would be everyone yes all those opposed of sentence here we are
