a district is have a staff appreciation event for everybody for all of our people and we will be doing that in our schools and buildings this week and so I just want to take this opportunity to Echo what Mark said which is to thank all of our people that contribute to our children and to having a strong community and um so that that is all I have uh tonight okay thank you okay next item on the agenda is the public comma comment for agenda items only and I have a list here uh Jillian Durham and this is the first of two opportunities for people to vote and uh to speak on agenda items only three minutes please Board of Education dear Ms Todd Dr Neuer and the Board of Education I'm genuinely thrilled about the

diversity reading challenge started at Margaret and I'm often we're in our schools Center is absolutely free and science people who wish we were in schools it is so vital to our community as a whole acceptance information and this certainly adds to that effective initially when we were enrolling birdie and I was very worried that place people are in a public school district that the majority of my reasons that she would not get the best education but her science and history follicles would be centered and that certain rules would be paper down often done that diversity is key to a healthy lifetime country by worried about if ASF was participating in censorship then we would face impossible and she would be exposed to the teachings that promotions we were concerned she would learn it would be

unaccepting it's a different team voters cultures and ability to learn better discrimination and learn how to sing with an lgbtq from infancy you sure overplayed birdies in child care and extracurricular activities with higher diversity for all of this members to close or I'd like to add that as a community as parents I believe we should be less concerned about the books on our library shelves about family with two dads or non-binary child less concerned that they will learn the 30 pounds per hundred might have had regarding delivery and more concerned about guns it's easier to obtain the knowledge than obtain environment let's be more than concerned about the child and things that might be cool to bring their parents done on the toolbox then a book about people who are different than ourselves let's encourage

our young lives to help the passionate growth regardless of our differences and ability thank you have a good night thank you the next speaker I get there close and special thank you good evening Arlington Board of Education members and administrators my name is Marie Anastasio I have two kids at Art resume one at LaGrange middle school and one in Arlington High School my comment is in regards to Eden item 7A the arthrs main presentation first I would like to thank you all for your service to the district and all of our students and family I am pleased to recognize the very valuable activity that Arthur S May is providing again this year and that is the diverse post-sweeting challenge the challenge was proposed by a parent member of the ASM Equity team of which I

am also a member the equity team then created a funds big billboard to encourage students and their families to lead and engage with a variety of books within topics including Black authors Hispanic authors Asian American Authors Native American and Indigenous authors world religion youth with disability for differently able lgbtq plus and gender inclusivity the librarian at library clerk along with the f82 facilitators collected virtual Arena Labs from authors to teachers and staff family members and leaving students they were made into Google's lives and tablets for students and families that easily access using QR code on the Bingo boards my2a ASM kids do their reading homework every day but the diverse proceeding challenge is their favorite time of the year for reading the challenge gives incentives for achieving bingos while providing new and exciting stories to

read and discover this challenge was the first time my daughter character Jim's thrilled to finally see her in reflected in the story we discussed how meaningful this must be for their classmates who have two moms or two dads and almost never get to experiences especially as part of the school day this is true of all of the topics including the challenge my kids have a non-binary cousin and they love that either virtual reality of the book neither I can't even imagine how impossible this could be for non-binary kids at ASL I am immensely proud to be a parent of the description pool that makes an effort to fulfill our district goal of a burning students commercial and cultural identity in our state policy statement on diversity efficient prison which says all students must feel that

they are welcome they belong and they are supported in every school all kids enjoy feeling proud about their own identity when they read books and that have characters who share aspects of identity with us everyone should get to see themselves and their family reflected in the most saving when a variety of characters are represented in books especially in their service similarities the schoolmates and neighbors they can become better friends and community members there's been a lot of talk in the past couple of years about book challenges and the alarming attention that made some people uncomfortable I am delighted on the birthday and instead creating such a positive archeology that has provided so many diverse stories provided to enjoy discuss and be inspired by thank you thank you and Erica Wolfe my name is I am

also very proud of the world of Tomorrowland here I love my job and my students however I am frustrated social media but over the past few years thank you I continue to received these messages but I hope by the campus and my friends saying it's everything okay I've heard that there's another problem yesterday just lastly one of my students said during the holy Place can't we just get in one week without dealing with fake bomb threat and it really hit me that I do not want I do not want this to be the norm anymore I'm a proud member of the spoon Community I hear how frustrated and scared parents are they ask you work in the high school what's the punishment for a bomb threat why does it keep happening I'm nervous to send

my kids to Arlington that last statement honestly breaks my heart because I love my school so much this Reckless Behavior on social media has to stop and this is why I'm here tonight as a teacher I am not aware of any blanket policies that support non-negotiable long-term suspensions for threats made on social media I'm asking the Board of Education to pursue a policy that if any student makes any type of threat to our buildings that they should perceive a non-negotiable minimum suspension equivalent to one marking period to start I understand we want kids in school I completely understand that I taught through code in my kitchen I have seen firsthand what happens when kids aren't in school however what we are currently doing in regards to punishing this behavior is not working because it continues

to occur I wasn't as upset when I practiced this this morning I know kids make mistakes however at this point they do they do know exactly what they are doing they do it is not a matter of I didn't think people would think I was serious or even worse I was just kidding perhaps if a child knows their future punishment they will make a better choice if they did this in college or in their adult lives they would be fired and most likely arrested enough is enough we don't need to hire more Consultants form a committee or create a survey to solve this problem we need you all to support us by creating a new policy that will be enforced regardless of a child's discipline record we hear over and over again in messages from

the superintendent and principles that students will get the full extent of the law and school code but as a community and faculty we are never told exactly what that punishment was and for how long it was if I am Incorrect and students are receiving more than a minimum of 10 weeks I believe that information should be made public so that the community hears and understands that just punishment is being served and cannot be altered due to Future good behavior send the message that posting bomb threats will never be tolerated I am tired of it our students are tired of it our community is targeted and you should be tired of it too it has to end please help us make it stop I am tired of feeling unsafe at work thank you thank you yeah

Selena Barrington Selena Barrington hello how's everyone um I did not come here to plan on speaking at all but when I did hear um about the confusion in the diversity reading challenge here at authoress May it confuses me because I'm unsure why people would not want to further expose diversity to our children we can obviously see from what happens at LaGrange Middle School that the children are having a culture shock when they see each other there are and there's an unsurmountable amount of racism happening at LaGrange Middle School where children are feeling defeated they feel as if they have no voice they feel as if they are what they're being called my son was here last year and had pretty much no problems with any type of racism but he goes to LaGrange Middle School

and now the kids who are his friends aren't his friends because they're calling him monkey on a daily basis because they have a whipping app on the phone that they're swiping at the children of color what else is there to do if we are not exposing our children from pre-k if they're not getting it at home then it is our job as a public school to expose them to differences to different cultures and to feel comfortable in their skin and allow others to be comfortable in their skin there's no other way to do it than to expose each other to each other and if it's not through a diversity challenge then what is the answer to that and while I'm up here I would like you all to think about what are you doing tomorrow

to solve that problem at LMS thank you All Right Moving On we moved to reports and discussion items Jerry Todd Arthur S May welcome Board of Education remember from where ASM staff students families and community members tonight's presentation will tell the story of who we are and what matters to us as a school community and as Gators we hope as the song says you see our true colors shining through and that our colors are beautiful like a rainbow Our Story begins with a focus on improving ourselves in the lives of those around us hopefully leaving our community and World better than we found it at ASM we recognize value and celebrate the unique differences and passions within each of us as you can see from this 2122 enrollment data snapshot our community is beautifully diverse

teacher flowers sharing a Makerspace project an impromptu guitar serenade fluency practice with a TA popping into a classroom to share an idea or ask a question reading Deputy Russo as she visits ASM just to name a few at ASM it is important that our students make connections not only with adults but one another buddy classes help this happen and take on a variety of forms one-on-one reading buddies one-on-one writing buddies sight word and fact fluency friends activities led by older students connections with our Admirals is also important we are so grateful for the support and Community give back provided by our AHS athletes who come each month to read with our first second and third grade students the joy and encouragement scene during these times is beautiful our annual give back program with Dutch's Outreach

and others along with taking turns for example when you're building or doing it as a group of five or so people so in order for everyone to be able to work on it and then to take turns I'm sorry I missed um number two so can I say that please I wanted to see what I could learn have some fun improve my engineering skills meet new people and have the experience I like Legos and surprises so it was fun to see what we would do with the Legos would it be a kit or would we just build I wonder what type of Lego they would use so the fact that it was Legos and that there would be a surprise maybe you want to do it good evening I want everyone to know that we

worked so hard at 7 30 a.m on Wednesday mornings student council has made me have an even greater passion for making things Fair fun and accessible I want to be a Broadway actress and joining the student council has helped me to become the best version of myself with the virtues of leadership teamwork and kindness that can help when working on a plot all of these clubs at ASM help contribute to a better school Community we are so lucky here at ASM to have so many clubs and we are grateful for the opportunities that come our way thank you yes so thank you to my student presenters um they have nicknamed themselves what are you so when they thought it was a b-o-e meeting they became the boss of eggs and let me tell you you

will be very happy to have them sitting at your table for whatever company you work with they are an energetic just very um cohesive group who brought the brightest light to my day each day the boss of what eggs right that was really it's really hard to speak in front of all these people at a microphone you all did an awesome job so they did a fabulous job um they do have some gifts for you you do have um a potted plant with a friendship bracelet wrapped around it which was given to our kindergarteners by page page can you just stand up and wait because Paige made those thank you you also have a bookmark that was created by our art Club so some of our art Club students created these and wanted you to

have these um you also have a positive affirmation flower um from students and staff so we thank you so much for joining us I just didn't want you I just didn't want you to leave in case you have to correct me which I know you would love to be good um no I visited uh I visited student council a couple weeks ago and I was extremely impressed with uh your student council I just think that um the students have a true voice in your school and I think that's really really important and it's impressive and I think if I'm correct it was your student council last year that came up with the bus helper idea correct yeah so they they really drive a lot of the things around the school and I I really enjoyed

it and if you guys don't mind I really would like to come back again it was so much fun and I would like to give a shout out I believe they're student counselor Council advisor is here miss lachinski so thank you Miss lachinski for taking it on I'd also like to give a shout out to my leadership team for all of their support and guidance they are an amazing group of individuals my staff that is here supporting tonight thank you so much and families for sharing your children this was just the most wonderful experience we're looking forward to figuring out how we can do another presentation we've had so much fun so thank you and a shout out to our PTA our PTA president for all that she does for Arthur S may not just

the snacks that are here so Marissa thank you so much if these children are representative of our future we're in really good hands thank you everyone thank you that's a new one okay now with the table of eggs we'll move on move on to new business uh our new business section of the agenda has several uh items for individual resolution approval documentation concerning these items has been provided to our AG members in advance to assure an extensive and thorough review and the first item is a second reading and may I have a motion someone seconds okay any discussion I have a discussion sure we uh took a couple of items off right last time at the last meeting just confirming yeah I believe so okay yeah I went back a little because I missed the

last meeting they were like five or six on last time first week right and there's only three on tonight two are off yeah any other discussion okay all those in favor please say aye aye opposed extension motion carries uh moving on to letter C Elementary instrumental music may I have a motion so moved second okay any discussion I just I do have one one question true um under the benefits section um the second bullet I just wanted someone um in the know to comment it said the um six day cycle would allow most buildings to provide instrumental music lessons and rehearsals um in a dedicated space during their scheduled times do we have an idea of how many of the six buildings yeah Dr Rodriguez has been working uh most closely with the principles on

this issue so can you uh respond please but all the other well okay so five of the six will correct and is there hope for West Road or there is okay all right thank you but where what room are they using now if you're saying they don't have they won't they don't have a room thanks I think it's more about a dedicated space that is theirs so Daisy will elaborate right So currently since the instrumental music is on a five-day cycle and everything else in the building runs on a six day cycle there are sometimes conflicts where the instrumental music class may be running in the gymnasium on one side of the gymnasium whether it's a gym class going on on the other side um going to a six day cycle will allow us to

reduce that from happening because we will know exactly what they um of the week they'll be a meeting so this will be a huge improvement over what we have right now so currently all of our elementary schools have to compete for space with instrumental music and phys Ed and other classes right now we're reducing it to one building that we're still trying to figure out so this is a drastic improvement to what we currently have okay thank you thank you any other questions okay and all those in favor say aye aye opposed abstention motion carrying okay letter d health and safety committee and they have a motion so this is a district health and safety committee and Dave Gillard second any discussion yes so we're creating the committee we're just not necessarily appointing a chair

right now it's not a board subcommittee right no I understand that but this was in relation this is a follow-up to the conversation we were having last week so from reading your email we're creating the committee Dave but we're just not well the the internal management of some of the various functions that we have to do with health health and and safety in the building came up at the last meeting and what I was trying to do is to um convey that the health functions are still going to be in Jill's office and that if this committee functions well she and her staff will should be able to focus more um you know more specifically on their on their primary responsibilities without occasionally getting distracted by some of these uh um things that come up

the the person will still technically report to Jill but we are trying to find a way to um uh allocate as many of the day-to-day management uh functions to other people in the district so that Jill's office can focus more uh intently on the student services function which is which is their primary role so the the co-chairs of the committee in this in this proposal I still think that the appropriate co-chairs of the committee are John Wilson and the safety coordinator for the district but um but the the motion is just to approve the establishment of the committee because it is something that is required by Statute right but we established that the safety coordinator can't be directing supervising reviewing Arlington employees he can perform certain functions that he sit as currently performing but he

would not be able to evaluate evaluate the um the the Safety and Security staff because those people are not associated with alteris which is the firm that we contract with but that that is not really related to the health and safety committee function of this committee no I understand what the function is but I'm just saying so you're going to get back to us at a later date about the management of this committee I understand we need to create the committee I understand Jill needs to free up time for all of the other things she's working on but I mean the point I made last time was we can't have an outside consultant manage Arlington employees and I think that the lawyer verified that he will not be mad he will not be evaluating Arlington

employees and he won't be he won't be serving as uh in in sort of in a in a in a role as an Arlington employee or be hired by Arlington but he still would perform um the the functions that he's currently performing and and those functions uh where where they're related to the purpose of the health and safety committee he would then he would then be able to to contribute to those to those things that that's not really would not really be managing or directing Arlington employees by serving on that by serving that function so when if you know when the if the board approves this tonight when that happens then we will solicit interest from people around the district try to get broad representation get various different um uh people that have different roles

in the district technology um Safety and Security administrators teachers parents a board member Etc and try to do what the statute uh recommends is is to make sure that we have at least one representative from every building in the district so that so the the makeup of the committee has not been established I still think that that the two appropriate people to actually co-chair the committee would be the uh Altera safety consultant and the uh director of facilities no I understand that but still the Altair safety consultant can't be directing an Arlington employee to do certain tasks or to do certain things right I mean that's what I understand the well the person is still involved in scheduling um you know scheduling people and assisting when we have a need in a building if we

need to um so for example we we have issues with traffic at Uniondale so he went over and took a look at that with um the school resource officer and they and they identified a Safety and Security employee that is from Lagrange Middle School who starts at a certain time of the day to go over to Vale Farm in the morning during drop off and that person now goes over there so he he would still be involved in in making recommendations and and working with the people he stationed at the high school so he works very closely there's like I had security person at the high school that works very closely with Sean about um our current person's name is Sean Lewis about making these different decisions about where it's best to station people in

the building at different times of the day and all that kind of stuff so his function wouldn't really change except if there are areas where we can take stuff away from Jill and Dr solomini at the high school we will look to try to do that to free up some of their responsibilities but but Sean does not currently evaluate and he would not he would not serve in that capacity okay anything else and if there is an issue it would have to be like Jill or or Don that would actually you know like that you know deal with the actual employee if there is an employee issue of some type performance showing up late whatever those types of things are okay all those in favor say aye aye aye opposed abstention motion carries [Music] okay

letter e expansion of alternative instruction program I have a motion so moved second okay any discussion all those in favor please say aye aye opposed abstention motion curious item F the expansion of the responsive Support Program may have a motion so moved second any discussion I just want to make a comment sure um I appreciate the changes in these programs very much I would love to get an update at the end of next year to see how the changes have rolled out how we feel about them what um they hold a lot of promise I was I was pleased that Jill put together such a nice you know slide deck for us to understand what the changes are going to be from last year and I would just love to hear you know what kind

of benefits we're reaping from this investment yeah I think that um I think that we we certainly intend to do that and and we should uh we are trying to establish some various different types of outcomes associated with these changes and we would report that to you um and I also think that as we identify challenges with with space or perhaps capacity you know we could fold that into other long-term planning if we can demonstrate to to the board and the community that these things are affected so we we also recognize the importance of sharing the information with you uh and there could be um there could be even be multiple times throughout the year that we might want to provide updates and things too as I see it like as a real positive investment

in kids that are struggling for a variety of reasons right some kids are starting emotionally someplace kids are struggling with their relative Behavior but in any case there are kids and they're struggling this is a way to kind of keep them in the fall that I'm really excited about seeing what this can do right and I was going to say I think we will hear sooner as opposed to later because you still have to determine the elementary site for the elementary right right so yeah yeah hopefully we'll be brought into that lupus information unfolds what I do what I would do but I would really like to see at some point and this may have to be tied into a master plan and whatever the ultimate facilities concept is for the district is some type

of a place where we have an alternative site for these programs that that is not housed in a school and you know right now our our current district office we have some of our programming well all of our programming is happening there and it's it's it's admittedly better to do that in a centralized place for various different reasons and I I don't think I really have time to get into here but as we think about expanding this program we just don't have the physical space to do that in the district office so we have to we still have to work that out the I I have a comment so I just wasn't clear I think it was written in the notes that the high school math teacher maybe would have been accessed and I I

thought that after the presentation that we had we decided that everyone was staying um so as far as that justification we have um and I believe it's the consensus of the board that um we were directed that as we developed a staffing plan for this year that we should not reduce any positions um that aren't naturally part of uh attrition meaning people leave the district they retire Etc um because we're expanding this program and because we thought that there was a need to add social workers and because we're trying to um fulfill a state requirement in health and some of those other types of things even though we um even though we had intended not to replace certain positions due to attrition we actually now are at a net positive in Staffing for next year

to do primarily to the expansion of this program so so nobody is being released um unless they're leaving the district through through attrition for one reason or another however we do have some positions that are being repurposed in terms of their assignment to support this program so are we moving anyone out of the middle school and then next year if we have retirements we would in theory move them back that is that is uh that could possibly happen yes I think are there two teachers that are uh that are currently in a different building that would that would be working in this program now proposed is that is that what it is right we need to add two more but there are two people that are being moved from their current assignment this year to

to being assigned to this program okay Larry wait but I'm not he was flushing that out I'm just trying to understand that a little bit better so if if we had decided at the last board meeting that we were going to leave the positions as is so that person isn't staying as is because I thought we had kind of decided that that person was doing a good job there was a need that person was staying there well I think we all agree that that the person has been a positive contributor to the district yes but it's my understanding that the direction from the board when we when we when we talked about Personnel was that you understood that if there was a need somewhere else if we did not if we kept these people on

board that that there would be flexibility to reassign them if we felt that we needed to do that that was the understanding that we had right Larry um so I had two questions but I I'll take turns is one uh Jill it said that uh for the I want to say it was the uh RSP program that you needed to be uh a 10 90 of the time and I I just was curious what's this are you out of the program if you if you're not there for 90 of the time what's the consequence so it's not that it's a consequence it's that the kids who are recommended for the program are kids who are struggling to attend school so one of the goals is to get them back to a 90 attendance rate um

that's one of the things that they work very heavily on is to get kids you know connected back to coming to school there are kids who if they're still not going to connect after that three six week initial period we might look to put them into a more restrictive program in an out of District IDT program but the goal is to connect them back to school so that's just one of the program goals is to get all kids back to 90. and IDT is intensive intensive day treatment which is run through BOCES you know again we had when I got here last year one of the things was that we had tons of kids being referred out to BOCES now we've had 60 kids instead of going out to a BOCES program being here at

our school district and coming back and then going back to their school for the most part some kids a few kids maybe six or so weren't super successful we did have to send them to more restrictive then they came back through RSP and then they went back to their programs at the high school or the Middle School so it's not a consequence to say gold program Kelly yeah so I I got I heard you Dave in the beginning about trying to find a location but I think in your notes you mentioned at the high school two rooms so we have two vacant rooms at the high school right now oh yes we have two fantastic rooms where there's um I can't remember what numbers they are but there's a bus uh that can bring those

kids right there they go right up the stairs the two rooms and it's very secluded which is really lovely so the two rooms you kind of have like a hallway where you can't see anything and then you kind of go split off left and right which is great so again no one really knows who's there it's like a very quiet math hallway there's not a lot of action and it's upstairs so and there's a bathroom right next to it so those kids can be really sort of secluded there as they are at the high school and they would come in a little later and then leave a little later so they're not you know identified as being something in a special program is that unusual or do we have a lot of empty rooms in

the high school I just don't have a sense of our current I mean that's a better question for Don but um you know like I said I was up there that day looking at the room and there was like uh our Boise speech therapist was using the room with one student she kind of borrows the room and then we had someone doing a math AIS lesson with one student if you have a rule they find a way to use it yeah right okay so but technically speaking they they have the luxury of having space to to um to deal with at the high school they're very welcoming um um Sharon Spencer was very excited to bring the program over she's really excited to help me supervise it on site so they're very excited to bring

the program there Larry okay um second question well first I wanted to say I love the idea of the program that is going along and thank you for correcting me I I totally misunderstood the 90 attendance thing and now I understand it um you also on the slide deck As I understood it you described the evaluation process for one program are they the same essentially I assumed they were but I just want to clarify that they're going to be similar we expect that some of the kids who are younger might have some more outward acting behaviors and some of the older kids um we're going to develop an intake process for those kids once we hire the social worker two social workers can get together and we'll we'll look at that process for the younger

students um it might be a slightly different intake process but the the idea is the same that they're kids who are struggling to either attend to stay on task to you know sort of be successful in their current settings they're not students who are really necessarily in need of special education services but there's you know more going on but their families have to be you know supportive of them being in the program um so there is a lot of family um input they have to be part of the intake process you know for it to be successful there's you know an intake process that has to go so it's a recommendation from the school goes to the social worker they do the intake with the family and then we decide together this is this is

a student who's a good fit so so you know that might come with a little push and pull with the different ages but essentially yes we have a lot of kids who again at the earlier ages are just you know still struggling with um coming to school all day and being you know having a lot of pandemic you know leftover holdover they didn't go to preschools and you know so we're seeing some different behaviors because they're younger but the idea is that we can address it when they're younger we won't be addressing it still in middle and high school thank you okay any other questions okay are we on thank you I think we need to vote Yes we have the motion on the floor with a second on the expansion of the rrsp program

you know all those in favor please say aye aye opposed abstentions motion and carriers okay next item item G is a pilot a new Leaf energy may have a motion some moved second okay and any discussion Mark yes I I just want did we do both enf or did we just do one no we did as well I'm having a rough day we just didn't talk about the first one all right I'll be I'll blame the secretary Pro 10. oh that's me all right so uh we have a motion we have a second on the pilot and any further discussion or any discussion all those a favor please say aye aye opposed extensions motion carries and now we are at H the RFP award re award which is for legal services this is the completion

of the process may have a motion so moved second any discussion there being none all those in favor please say aye aye opposed abstention motion carries I thought I skipped some okay future discussion items anyone I'll throw something out there not time sensitive in any way along the lines of the my request from a couple months ago about on the foreign language program I think it would be helpful to have a discussion of the physical education program um curriculum how it's put together programs you know when we took the tour of actually Arthur S May with Dave and a bunch of cabinet members we were just talking about different physical education programs and I had a lot of questions and I don't think we've had a presentation in a while so this would be district-wide

yes okay so um certainly we can do that we got behind in following up on some of the future agenda items when we had some board meeting cancellations and some things like that so I did want to comment I was actually thinking about um saying this later in the agenda but as it relates to this topic we're going to get to the transportation request um about sharing some information about Transportation next week and um we'll we'll take we'll start to try to work through some of the other outstanding ones as well over the next couple months what was the transportation there was there was a request and it was a long time ago uh back in the fall about just trying to get a better feel for you know what's involved in the transportation operations

A Day in the Life a day in the life in the life of a bus driver yeah stay in the life and like the common the man would have to manage and all that similar tone good yes good remembering Dave so next next week well I had to get a list to remember remember so I asked it then I said okay yeah that was one of the things on the list still no we've been talking about that for a while um we wanted to um you know we wanted to try to have some fun with it and maybe get some video from some drivers and some things so I think Melissa's working on that but you know the Arlington connect um process the budget process you know all those things um uh require um you

know require a lot of effort and so um we don't have a draft of anything yet so I'm gonna we'll find out over the next couple weeks what what actually ends up coming about but we plan to do something uh uh at the next meeting okay so again just to flush out my request just to add something so I have had people ask me and I've been curious myself if a student misses PE class in high school the student has to make that up so I just want to really flush that out the origin of that my understanding is it's not a state law it's sort of an Arlington policy decision I know it causes a lot of hardship so that was just one of the issues that I wanted to just hear from whoever

was going to present to us also about the curriculum how we choose what the high school students what sports activities um they do during PE class so yeah I'll give you an example so I was in some buildings talking with some teachers and I I talked with the uh the PE teacher from Beekman came by to see me and the elementary schools at the at the end of the school year their last unit is games and what they do is they try to teach a student how to play different types of yard games and with the idea of going into the summer and being able to have outdoor activities that they can do with their friends and family so I thought that that was really when he told me about that I didn't know about

that but I thought well that that's a great concept like so um we'll try to uh we'll try to give you a better idea what goes on with with the programming and we'll make sure that we fold in the uh expectation for Miss Miss PE classes yeah and that's that's not time sensitive so you know if we have other things pressing okay any other commentary or discussion items okay moving on number 10 business consent agenda our consent section of the agenda lists several items for approval by a single motion documentation concerning these items has been provided to our board members in advance to assure and extensive and thorough review and the first one may I have a motion someone second any discussion all those in favor please say aye aye opposed abstentions motion carries uh

let's see the minutes anyway okay we are now on item 11 public comments uh in the absence of our district clerk we didn't have anybody that signed up because we weren't here to get you to sign up is there anyone that white would like to speak uh during public comment about uh any non-agenda item there being no one and we'll move on item 12 committee reports policy we were due to have a policy committee meeting on Monday night we postponed that because of the meet the candidates discussion our next policy meeting will be Monday June 5th at 5 30 pm at central office okay thank you audit and finance nothing at this time okay advocacy just the comment that the uh the state budget was finally approved a little over a month behind but uh

the money's rolling in okay we're gonna get our salary doubled there you go don't spend it all in one place yeah exactly health and safety I'll be attending the dirt meeting on Thursday and then I'll um report to you regarding anything that needs to be shared with the board okay okay RFP is no longer a commit subcommittee uh moving on to 13 organization reports Duchess County School boards Association okay I got a few things one is um I'd really like to encourage my colleagues and I can RSVP for all of us if you'd like to attend the dinner I don't have it at the top of my head I think it's uh I think it's the first first yeah it's that same first Thursday they always do um this is a nice opportunity to meet

colleagues at other school boards you know so if you guys could cause the most cycle it is a cosmos and Poughkeepsie yeah it's no cost to the district and um they're actually gonna I think that you've been reached out to Dave or maybe someone in the district's been reached out to they're going to recognize students in the five districts in the county that have the Seal of Civic Readiness and they're going to ask um you know so a child can come with a parent and they can present on what the project they did to earn their seal of Civic pettiness so they wanted to have a student-based component in the dinner and then yeah we're already identified yeah no so that's great so we and and of course Dave you're invited as well so um

fun for all so if you're taking names I'll go okay great thanks and if anybody else wants to text me Marion excellent I don't know and you know Dave anybody wants to check their calendar and let me know that would be great and then I'll what what date did you say Thursday June 1st June Thursday June 1st I don't remember the time um I I will I will follow up to everybody with the details if I know you want to go and actually I'll send out maybe just a quick volley to say hey you want to jump on the our RSVP train yeah because I think Linda wanted to go yeah yeah and maybe I would like to go you know meet some people from around because they have a pretty good um it's a

it's a nice group there's a good representation from BOCES there too um and uh Jason the the superintendent always comes you know so anyway um I'm glad that some people are showing some interest so the last meeting that we had they had a interesting presentation about the state of special ed preschool in the county and sort of an alignment of resources and and actually there wasn't a huge amount it was almost like maybe there'd come a point where there'd be some advocacy for us but it was almost like an educational about um there was some somebody there from the City of Poughkeepsie schools there was somebody there from a task force um from Dutchess County and there was somebody there from BOCES and they were all talking about their different struggles and how they could

kind of maybe work together and and some of the things that prevent really meeting the needs of the Learners who come to us when they're younger so basically we were talking about three and four-year-olds not so much the Z you know 18 months to three-year-olds so um that was one thing and then Marianne I think um yeah I caught some of this we our our monthly meeting got changed and so I had a conflict so I wasn't able to uh attend the entire meeting but um of superintendents but there was some conversation that I didn't catch the full conversation that and and maybe you can elaborate I think there's some concern that the funding source from the county is going to dry up for that program leaving districts with a bigger Financial take it did

they talk about that anymore talk about it in that way but they definitely talked about how the funding is like a patchwork and that you know and that school districts interested that have space and could add say a Pre-K classroom won't get the reimbursement they need to make that worthwhile even if they want to which means you have need and you have willingness but why not then pull it all together so it was a question of I think what we kind of ended up with like I say it was more of like this long discussion um among these groups about kind of Gully if anybody knows Gully Stanford from BOCES he's really great at this stuff he sits on some kind of board over Poughkeepsie but he he was talking about identifying places we can

apply advocacy pressure like where are the one or two points that make consistent sense in this sort of it was it was like a lot of information but where can we really apply pressure to get change and it really kind of is in sometimes the funding stream or the approval stream those were kind of the big ones right the Pre-K kid that is usually a county they pay for it right and they have better rates I'm not going to get this right so don't quote me on this but they have better rates through a third-party person than we could get as a school for doing the same thing oh and and BOCES is also willing to I you know for all you out there in radio land I'm getting this totally wrong but um BOCES

is also willing to open Pre-K classrooms for high needs students and can't do it through certain funding problems so there's a question of what can we do through State ad what could they do maybe through the Regents to say hey you're all focusing on Pre-K why you know let's identify where the where the pinch points are right and maybe ease those a little well yeah I can speak I can speak to uh I could speak to a couple concerns that that we have as long as the topic is on the table one is that the grant money that we get from the state is not enough to fully offset the cost of the program so um so it it it it works Dave excuse me are you speaking about General um kind of stuff I'm

talking about not special needs one okay because I well in other words we don't provide transportation um if if we paid our own teachers as opposed to uh paying the the providers that we partner with that you know we would we would have to find Budget sources to offset the difference so there are things like that the second thing I think that's a little bit troubling in New York is that we're not allowed to prioritize and this does relate to special education uh we're not allowed to prioritize uh students for that program based on any kind of at-risk criteria so everybody has the same opportunity to get in and so what's happening now is uh in in Arlington is because of the uh because of the locations where we were able to find Partners some

people in the district it's not very centralized location so some people in the district have difficulty accessing it and um we actually had to give money back to the state because we didn't have uh people take we didn't have uh people in the community use up all of our a lot of slots and uh and I what's what's happening is I think uh some of the kids that need it the most in short aren't getting it and and I also think that in order for us to do it in-house we would not we would not have the physical space so again when we start talking about a long-term Master facilities plan if we want to prioritize PK uh Pre-K we have to think about um the the facility uh aspect of it as well and

it would seem that the money one of the new budget items that went through was an increase in funding for pre-k but it seemed like a very small amount of money like 150 million or something seems like a drop in the bucket for the entire state of New York like I'm not sure how that's getting funneled around but it doesn't sound like it's enough to take care of that laundry list that Dave just mentioned right so I'll move on to my last thing for the Dutchess County School boards which was um one of our members in Beacon they had written a couple of nisba resolutions so we're coming into Nismo resolution season everybody loves that but you know we could also draft a resolution on anything we wanted but we kind of decided as a

group with um Duchess County School boards is that we would we all like the idea of bringing it to our group it doesn't mean you have to sign on for it but if you bring it to The Duchess County if you if you look when Marianne's our has been our historically our liaison with the with the um with the resolution process thank you um when you do that you can have other districts sign on and it gives it more Force like sometimes you'd see four districts that propose a particular resolution right so what they're saying is if we wanted to and we don't need to do it unanimously but so if Beacon comes in with something that that I bring back to everybody here and it resonates with us we could decide to sign on

to that resolution and when it went out to the voting group or went up to nisbah to see if they approve it or not have a little more gravitas so and then if we have things or that we've talked about a couple we did at our last advocacy meeting so I have a little right so I have notes to myself and and it is timely in that you know we get through next week with the budget vote but then there's really only about a month after they so we do need to put our calendars together because I think the resolution deadline is I want to say like mid-july perhaps or something so it's there's not a long Runway here for us to decide what we want to do so right and what we talked about

is kind of taking it out of these monthly meetings and maybe doing just like a you know daisy chain of emails or a flash out to everybody because you know you all get the emails from Dutchess County School boards not just me but when you think about the fact that if that's the deadline we have one more meeting it's the annual meeting it's the dinner right so there aren't going to be easy Hiatus for the summer so if we want to really you know support anybody we're going to be doing a kind of a parallel track so so Dave if you're our liaison to advocacy so if you start thinking ahead of you know a few things I know that when we met last time you did mention something and if I go back and

find my notes um it might have had to do with capital projects funding or something like that too yeah um so if you could start just thinking along those lines and I'll reach out um to my group to see if we can get um either a late or may or early June meeting on the books yeah no problem that concludes my comments okay uh Arlington Education Foundation um their next meeting is June 7th they just uh had a successful although Rainey uh 5K over 200 participants uh it did pretty good all things considered do you have anything to add to that Dave no okay I do not ptea PTSA oh just a real shout out thank you for the meet the candidate tonight what what a well-run event and super important to our community and

I want to thank them very much for the hard work that went into that I know they're struggling to find leadership for next year so shout out to anybody who might feel like stepping forward hey uh update Dutchess County Boces um there's not really much there Jason was there he did talk you know there continues to be um discussion and confusion and maybe we'll we'll table this for now about whether or not they're going to have a koser related to schools paying for dual enrollment classes right so that is something we probably want to continue to follow not we can make our own decisions about what we want to do but um maybe for students who are eligible for free and reduced launch but the new onset of the paying for the dual enrollment so

I that is continuing to kind of plot along I think that yeah BOCES is working on a coaster and it looks like they are going to be able to get one however the the issue of whether or not we can use that is is still up for debate and there's there are different districts are getting some conflicting legal advice but I think that the districts that are paying for for there are some districts that have chosen to pay for this but those districts are paying for every student right not not just select students and who want to participate and that that is where the distinction is on what are the legalities of of whether or not you can um um use budgeted School funds for that purpose so I guess what I was thinking is

that maybe you know Kick the Can a little bit down the road see how the whole process with Jason Plays out and then come back to it and say now that the dust has settled what decision do we want to make maybe for the for like what what you know maybe revisit it with our attorneys and say you know given the now the state dad has approved this coaster that kind of gives it a different kind of a look and then of course understanding what the numbers would be for us and all that kind of thing but maybe that we could at some point um just to revisit it because there were certainly a lot of passion at one point for being able to help kids with that so uh Arlington connect okay um the

all of the community engagement sessions for this year have been completed the facilitation team will be meeting this Thursday um evening um I I I heard from board members that they wanted to know more about Arlington connect and um as I was thinking about it I was just looking through the website and I don't want to read what's on the website but Melissa did just an amazing job of of summarizing everything that's happened so I'd really refer you to that and spare our time just to mention that what's coming up in the fall um will be building visits so individual buildings uh will be available for uh Community to tour and look at the uh what's happening there and what's going on uh and I think that's going to be exciting uh also in the

fall we'll be having a another scientific phone survey you know just to see where the community stands on a bunch of issues that we'll need to make decisions on Melissa is there anything else I should add okay thank you thank you superintendent's closing your remarks yeah I um I commented on the Arthur S May student government um I wanted to do that while the kids were still here um but I intended to do that tonight I talked about our staff appreciation and um I um you know I as it relates to the comments that were made about the diverse reading challenge um I think that um I just want to assure the community that we've made great progress with our Equity work in this District in recent years even though we we readily admit that

there's a lot more work to be done but but we do we do value and prioritize our Equity work in the district and we're actively we're actively uh doing various different things around it that many people may not know all of our buildings have specific Improvement goals we do have people that are are working with staff and students in different ways to support either training or student programming we're working on piloting some social emotional learning um uh types of activities with uh advisory programs and other types of other types of uh things that we're looking to to build into our schools that that we didn't necessarily have four years ago five years ago six years ago and we are very very much uh looking and and Dr Rodriguez has just met um with coordinators at

the high school and uh her office is working with different uh curriculum teams to try to make sure that we have diverse resources in our schools and that our curriculum not just in the library but that our our actual curriculum reflects diversity um as it relates to the standards and and the types of um um types of resources that classroom teachers have access to so that students truly can do some of the things that were mentioned tonight like feel that they belong to the school and they're part of the school community so um I don't I don't want anybody to think I'm saying that we have it all figured out but I don't want anybody to walk away thinking that this is not something that we value and prioritize and are working hard at in

in our district thank you board reflections Dave I never know where to mention things like this so sorry if it doesn't really fit into board Reflections but um I guess it kind of does with all the different buildings that we go to I do have a tendency of going back to Memory Lane down memory lane and reflecting um we lost uh recently another Arlington teacher um and in this past a couple weeks and Sandy house was a teacher in the district for many years he was a phys ed teacher and and she was just we were just all it overlooked recently and she was at Overlook for years she was also a tennis coach and a gymnastics coach at the high school and just just a real sweet woman and I know many who remember

Sandy think of her fondly thanks Larry so I just didn't want to have the evening in without just um you know just mentioning uh about Sandy so thank you Marion since I'm in the Arthur S May space I just wanted to give a shout out um I had the pleasure of accepting the invitation to the Parade of Nations um and it was even more special because uh my granddaughter will begin her career as a kindergarten Gator I guess um in September so I brought her along and she was thrilled by all the pageantry and the uh the joy of the room so I appreciate it thank you and by the way if I could just jump right back in it occurred to me um and I should have said this we actually have our Equity

presentation scheduled for the next board meeting so Daisy can give you an is intending to give you an update on all the various different things that we have been doing this year and some of the progress that we've made so sorry about that but I thought that that was appropriate word Reflections continuing Larry and I'm having that kind of a night Mrs Todd so I need help I I of course first want to just thank you for the Parade of Nations which was just I mean the energy in the room was just amazing and and uh it was great um but today when I was supposed to be in the executive session I was sitting here you know kind of doing nothing and um I did have help with that too uh so thank you

Erica for helping me with the uh signing people up but but also there were some beautiful music as we came in and Jason if I have his name right because it was years ago and I'm having that kind of a day he taught with me at Titusville um the art teacher but I I didn't know the other gentleman and I just wanted to give a shout out to the Beautiful music but what are their names Mrs Chadwick if you're online you're being shouted out now without the mic they can't hear you oh yeah thank you anyone else Kelly um I'd like to wish the Arlington crew team good luck this weekend they will be rowing in the New York State um meet in Upstate New York and I'd like to acknowledge Kara jimik and Mateo

Torres who are the April athletes of the month for the crew team and the other comment I wanted to make is I wanted to thank I think his name is Bruce he's the safety officer who is outside the high school in the morning directing traffic when parents drop off their kids he has giant clown hands he's incredibly enthusiastic smiling at all the parents making sure everyone stops for the kids and I feel very safe with him in control of the situation so I'd like to thank him Dr solomonay anyone involved in this sort of re re-envisioned drop-off situation in Arlington which for many many years was um chaotic and now it is chaos free and a lovely way to start the morning and I want to especially thank Bruce for bringing a smile to my

art to my face and the faces of other parents with his Jolly nature so thank you thank you can I just one more thing and Kelly you might be interested in this because we talked about it health and safety a lot I was annoyed at myself for forgetting what time the dismissal was at the high school and I got caught in traffic on 55 last week and at the roundabout yeah I was yeah that was really dumb move on my part but in any event I was right there two cars back from the roundabout where we taught they cross over to the church parking lot zone and I must say it was pretty well controlled the kids were respectable they were making eye contact with the driver they weren't on their phones like walking across

you know and and it actually was somewhat doable and I I didn't want to look like I was something kind of weirdo and trying to record it for you to show you on my phone but um it was really not bad and um it kind of made me feel pretty good about that because I know you know that we we had a lot of discussion about how chaotic that was but at least the moment that I was there the only time I really experienced it it wasn't chaotic it was it was pretty pretty good I agree that's what I've witnessed it's good okay good so I'm really happy it seems much safer so good Linda nothing okay uh I've got a couple uh I went to the language honor key uh on Thursday they had

the Italian uh group as well as the Spanish and the French and so they asked me to say a few words so I started out with que pasando yo estudia Espanol cuatrosanos and did all right they got it which is what's happening and I studied Spanish uh for a year for four years and that was about 53 years ago so I remember a little bit of it so it was fun to see the all the kids that uh at the honors key for the the languages while I was waiting for uh to see that uh experience and to speak uh I heard some music coming from one of the music rooms and I walked in and uh one of the groups was there the Jazz machine and the music teacher was there so I got

Sarah needed a little bit for a little while they played fantastic as always as we're known for our music program uh just another example of a a great group of kids that are doing fantastic work uh with the music so that's my thing as far as the route 55 uh I've uh I've experienced the same thing I'm kind of close to that and the only thing that I have a bit of a problem is when kids are out there with uh hats and baskets collecting money in the medium they need to be a little more careful about uh that when they're out there uh they tend to kind of reach go for the money rather than watch out for their own safety sometimes so be careful out those kids out there kids anybody else okay

may I have a motion to adjourn Ed okay any discussion all those in favor please say aye aye meeting adjourned
