001This wasn't made for artists. Good evening. I'd like to call the May 19th meeting of the Carle Place Board of Education. Please rise for the pledge of allegiance. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Please stay standing. We want to read the invocation in language today. Please remain standing as we make our community invocation. In the spirit of fostering an atmosphere of unity and purpose, we seek a harmonious existence with all members of our community and strive to bring humanity to our deliberations and our work. Thank you. You may be seated. Welcome to the May 19th meeting of the Carle Place Board of Education. We will start the meeting with comments

002from the board, and I will take the lead. Good evening, everyone. Hopefully, everyone vote for budget and for the board of education tonight. The polls close at 9:00. I would also like to have a few congrats to our athlete, Adrian Futt, who became the new state champion for the boys' lacrosse. Tristan Sidelli, who's representing Carle Place, Nassau County Golf Championships at Bethpage tonight. And also, Madison Reedy and Ava Lomas. Ava from the class B girls varsity basketball who performed to All-State, and Madison Reedy on earning the All-State honors. Well done, girls. I'd also like to congratulate the athletes for their college re-signing. We have Olivia Avitello, Joseph Catalino, Will Futt, Adrian Futt, Isabella DeBrine, Grace Tassitano, Ryan Neary, Vinchenzo Versani, Angeline Kiki Saladis, Megan Rice, Thomas Scotch, Luis Villegas, Alexa Wenger. I'd also like to

003thank Ava Utte, Lila Cavalli, Lidia Necula, and Olivia Billy. Sorry about that. And they are Freshmer students who performed with the Choir Ventu College Review Orchestra. They performed at Carnegie Hall. So congratulations to everyone. I will now hand it over to Vice President Hero. Good evening, everybody, and thank you for coming. I also hope that everybody has voted, because I just want to vote in the primaries. I'd also like to congratulate my fellow board member and board president, Vanessa Talamonaco, on earning a level two board excellence award from the New York State School Boards Association's Board Excellence Recognition Program. This program recognizes school board members who are committed to continually expanding their governance, knowledge of leadership skills, and service to their districts and communities. And congratulations to Vanessa. She deserves it. We had the Gerry

004Lane Spring Concert, our kindergarten students' performance. The kindergarten goes wild, which was absolutely adorable. The students sang their little hearts out and filled the room with so much joy and energy. A very special thank you also to Gerry Lane music teacher, Mrs. Fox, as well as all the kindergarten teachers for their dedication, hard work, and support in making this performance incredible and memorable for everyone in attendance. I just want to mention Carle Place High School is holding a day of service on May 26th, giving students the opportunity to give back to the community through volunteer projects and acts of kindness. Service Day is meant to promote students' growth in accordance with leadership, passion, community involvement, and knowledge, causing an impact both inside and outside of school. It is wonderful to see our students using their

005time and talents to help others and represent the Carle Place community so proudly. And good morning to you. I turn it over to you, Chair. Good evening, everyone. Those who've already come out and voted, please make sure that you do. The polls will open for another minutes or so, so there's still time to do that. There's been a lot going on in this end of the school year and the last couple meetings. It's just always a whirlwind of activity, all good things, of course. Also, that kindergarten celebration this week. The kids did a great job. To staff, to priority, of course. It was a packed house, a lot of energy in that kindergarten class, for sure. And it's always nice to see. My daughter was in there, and I love to see that she's been

006practicing for so many weeks and really excited about it. And when she shot up out of bed that morning, she said, "It's a great day for a concert." That's actually what she said. She was very excited about Kate Perry and all the music and all the selection there. So it was really great. And all of the others as well, the middle school concert recently, and I know we have more again tonight. So there's a lot of really great things to catch and be part of as we wind down the school year. So not really winding down. A lot of things. Thank you. I pulled up my screen here. Thank you for coming tonight. I want to congratulate Mrs. Armstrong on being named- Star Teacher Award recipient of the Long Island STEM Education Research Association. What

007an incredible honor and well deserved. I also want to congratulate all 13 of our senior student-athletes on their commitment to continuing playing sports at the collegiate level, from softball, basketball, football, and lacrosse to everything in between. Our athletes consistently go above and beyond both in the classroom and on the field or the court. We are so proud of all of you and all that you've accomplished, and cannot wait to see what the future holds for you. Lastly, if you haven't voted yet, there's still time. Make your voice heard. Thank you. Good evening, everyone. On Wednesday, May 20th, which is tomorrow, the Honor Society inductions are going to take place at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. Congratulations to all students who made it into the Honor Society. On Tuesday, May 26th, which is next Tuesday, all

008high school students will participate in our Day of Service. This new initiative provides students with an opportunity to step outside the classroom and make a positive impact in their community through both on-campus and off-campus service projects. I want to thank Ms. Roy for leading that. Thank you so much. Next Thursday, we will host our Middle School Senior Scholarship Night. The evening will begin with dinner at 6:00 p.m., followed by the ceremony at 7:00 p.m. Both students and staff will be off Friday, May 22nd and Monday, May 25th in observance of Memorial Day. This holiday honors the military personnel who gave their lives while serving in the armed forces. I hope everyone will be safe and have a nice weekend. Thank you. We will now hear comments from Dr. Fede. Yes. Like I've said before, sometimes

009when you're in an elected position, there's nothing more else to say than positive things said. I will add, "Beauty and the Beast," in case you happened to see the show last week, was a smash. It was a really, really good show, a lot of fun. Students did a tremendous job. We have some hot, heavy playoff action happening. Girls lacrosse turned in a tremendous performance yesterday versus Syosset Valley. Softball and baseball are also advancing to the next round. There's a lot on this input. Lots to write. We are rocking it out there. The Day of Service has been talked about up and down and left and right. It is going to be a really, really good event. It's done in honor of the fact that our students really care about service, the fact that it's our

010250th anniversary of the founding of our nation. And as Lucas said, it coincides perfectly with Memorial Day, with it being a moment where service members in American history gave their lives in service to our country. There are four Vietnam veterans at Clark Hills High School who lost their lives in Vietnam. There's a plaque right outside the auditorium. We honor their memory every year at our celebration with the F-11 and the American Legion, where we celebrate those boys who were just like you were back in the '60s, and they gave it all for their country. I want to remind all of our students as we are coming into the home stretch, time to study, buckle down on your books for all of your final projects and final exams. And just coming out of or still in

011AP season. This is the crunch time where you get to shine and do your best work. And last but not least, I want to pick up where Patricia left off. That is to say that our president, Les Cotton Monaco, has received, earned I should say, this award from the New York State School Boards Association, and it is for education. What a fitting thing it is to be in an organization devoted to education, then have a president who devoted 150 hours of your life to become educated as a board member. And it's these volumes of your commitment, and I thank you for that, and congratulations. Thank you everyone. It's an honor and a privilege. Before we have public comments on the agenda, Vice President Heroden will read the public comment disclaimer. The Board of Education allows

012time at the conclusion of its regular meetings for comments from residents in attendance. Please know that any person wishing to speak during this time shall comply with all conditions of board policy. Although a total of 30 minutes is allowed for comments, the board president holds discretion to adjust the total time. We remind you to keep your comments to three minutes and to conduct yourself in a respectful manner. Please address school matters only and refrain from addressing topics relating to personal matters or individual students. Such concerns should be discussed privately with a superintendent or administrator at an appropriate time. The board is here to listen and cannot provide immediate feedback or engage in open dialogue. Any necessary follow-up will be noted and provided at a later date. Thank you. Okay. We will continue with the meeting.

013Are there any public comments regarding the agenda and agenda items? Now, for approval of the consent agenda. May I have a motion to approve the consent agenda? I make a motion. Second. All in favor? Aye. The consent agenda is approved. Are there any questions or comments from the public? Public, are you going to speak or you want me to thank you? Thank you, Chair. Parker Drake. So I promised my kids I would fight to the end. My last three minutes of fighting. Last board meeting, you heard the parents and community heard a wonderful presentation regarding the rebranding, renovation of Leader in Me at the high school. I'm begging you to, over the summerPlease work with a committee of teachers, possibly the new administration at Rushmore to rebrand and work that leader in me brand down

014to Rushmore. For the last four days of school, I've had the opportunity to sit at my kitchen table with my kids this year, having breakfast with them, and my sixth grader and my first grader are telling me the same videos that they're watching. My sixth grader was like, "Oh, we watched a video about breathing." And my first grader was like, "Oh, was it the one with the lady wearing this shirt and this shirt?" Personally, I don't think first graders and sixth graders should be receiving the same lesson. So I think the rebrand needs to trickle its way down, and the summer is a great time for everybody to work together. The lunch in the cafeteria, I know I brought this up at a previous meeting. Something needs to happen. Students in the last lunch periods

015are not receiving what's on the menu or proper lunch at all. On hot lunch days, there's not enough food for the second or the third lunch periods. So a system needs to be put into place for students who are possibly buying. Something needs to occur because kids should not come home hungry. Yes, there are choices, but when a kid is anticipating a hamburger and there's only cereal, we have a situation. And the last thing is over the summer, additionally, I quote, "What is being looked at is the storyboard mapping." I know that this has been discussed with people for almost a year and a half, and I know administration changed. I do see there's a good chunk of money in the budget for storyboard, and as a parent of a new seventh grader, I'd like

016to know what's happening a little bit before it happens. I don't need to know in December what my child has learned in September. So I think that those are some pretty important topics that are broad enough, people. Thank you. Well, yes. So if you have any comments, we'll pick up on the lunch piece. We are going to be sure Greg will be doing some significant work on the storyboards this summer. That's a good thing to know. And it just so happens, like Laura was saying earlier, we had a significant Leader in Me meeting yesterday at which we said, should we be taking this work that's happening here and running it with our leader in early grades and with one of Greg Parke's teachers who I've been working to help with that rebrand we're doing. Are

017there any other questions or comments from the public? Can I have a motion to take a recess and move the meeting to the multi-purpose room for the election and budget results? Motion. Second? Second. All in favor? Aye. So moved. We will open the meetings back up after results of the budget and the election so that we can move ahead. Thank you for attending our session. The meeting is over.
