001good evening and welcome to the Fredonia Central School District Board of Education meeting for Tuesday November 8 2022. we start every meeting with a pledge of allegiance and I would like to ask my newest best friend uh Jessica Gonzalez Jessica if you would come forward and help us with the pledge to the flag it's real easy you just have to start the Pledge of Allegiance and come right up around here yep that's it come on up Jessica this is this is one of our government students and and you just have to like put your and and say there's the flag right there right it's a flag of the United States of America and into the Republic for which it stands one nation under God thank you Jessica I appreciate that so we have a consent

002agenda for for all the government students I will go through this they're all listening and not on their phones and doing homework so uh the adoption of the consent agenda upon emotion and a second plus an affirmative vote by the members present approves each and every item so designated however prior to the adoption of the consent agenda any board member May remove any item from the consent agenda this item will then come up for discussion as the regular as part of the regular exam dot so if I could get a motion for the agenda and if anyone would like anything pulled out we can do that later don't move Hein and Mr Marshall [Applause] Mr Hawk okay is there anything anyone would like pulled out of the agenda the consent agenda so we can look

003at that further no okay so if not uh all those in favor signify by saying aye aye all opposed thank you um I'm going to guess we don't have anybody to uh you're already smiling okay so uh nobody is here to to ask the board or speak to the board so we're just going to move on to our special presentations uh we have the building building conditions survey young and right architectural so Mr zilliac so do you like to introduce yeah I'm going to do a quick little intro here and I'll touch on this a little bit more later but as you know we have a few different Focus areas for the school year and then we've been trying to follow them up with action steps so one of our Focus areas this year is

004develop a plan to maintain and upgrade our district facilities based on need and preserves an environment that is conducive to effective teaching learning and overall performance one of the action steps within that Focus area is to better understand our building condition survey and the process attached to a building conditions survey through a presentation from Young invite at one of our board meetings and that happens to be this evening so this is the beginning of us thinking about processing and really starting to put a plan together for where we're going as a district in terms of facilities and what that looks like in the years to come I'm very pleased tonight from Young right to have both Jeff and Melissa here to guide us through a presentation share some information with us and certainly have some

005time afterwards to respond to questions comments more thoughts from the group and especially from our Board of Education so having said that without any further Ado welcome guys appreciate you making the trip from Buffalo and uh welcome thanks Brett uh so as Brad mentioned I'm Jeff Hazel I am the project manager for military assigned to and with me this evening to talk about the BCS is Alyssa Catlin she is one of the current Associates and also our resident expert with the BCS so with that I'll turn it over I would say we love questions anytime it's way more exciting to get them along the way than a pile of them at the end so please I love being interrupted anytime uh but yeah we're here to talk about the building condition survey so you guys

006were one of the first people that were on the ball on this in 2019 uh and then the state came out and you know screwed up all your plants um but if you don't know what the building condition survey is maybe not everybody I'm assuming the group in the back doesn't know what the building condition survey is um but it's a requirement by New York state to complete every five years it started in 2000 um and so in 2000 it was a relatively useless document that came out uh looks like this is relatively the same at this point um but it came out with this document there's a series of questions this is how thin and small it is in 2005 young and right realized that this document wasn't doing too much for school districts

007but there's this beautiful thing called buildinging that school districts get for completing this document and we realized that we could help make it more useful for schools and actually processing the information more so than this yes or no black and white packet comes out so we added photos and floor plans to that in 2010 our crew realized we could make it even more useful and we developed a database that organized all that information helped you find it I will show you how that looks 10 years later now tonight but that was the Inception of it was back in 2010 in 2015 that continued to grow and develop and 2020 is when the state changed all the rules on the building condition survey um it used to be that it was a requirement every five years

008so the whole state would do it every five years in 2020 they switched it to being 20 of the state had to do it every year so there's actually a requirement for each school district and they get assignment here now so that's switched in 2020. so you guys were ahead of the ball in 2019 and then the state came out and said oops new rules uh in 2020 and assigned every District a year so I'm going to turn it over to Chapel so it just so happens that fredonia's assigned year is 2023 or here uh so an important thing to note here is that you could do it ahead of time uh unfortunately John Forbes wouldn't like that very much because he would not be dated so in 2023 you would receive uh building a

009uh up to 31 cents per square foot so if you take nothing else away from this presentation John would like you to remember and that 31 cents a square foot is more than adequate to pay all of your Architects and Engineers that help you complete your budget and we'll talk yeah that would only be half of it type of thing and there's all sorts of other opportunities so there's a very healthy Aid equation with waiting until the year that you do and there's some opportunities for additional investigations that you can do as part of that survey and still get building you know yeah is that um starting January 2023 or the academic year so we have to wait till September 2020. very good question so you the survey responsibility is an actual year it's between

010January and December you have to complete the survey but you can choose as a district what fiscal year you want to put the cost so it's kind of a twofold answer it doesn't really thought so every District kind of just has to pick which fiscal year they want it in you can only request aid for it in one fiscal year but you can complete at any time over the course of the calendar year later question all right let's see so this is our crew that does the building condition survey um we wear blue because if you you know we could wear it winter but we wear blue uh it's actually helpful when your school colors aren't cool already um that's because we are all over your building when we come out to do this survey

011there's nine of us and if I slide to the next slide you can see that each person has a different thing that they're looking at so if you sat right here in this room and I think I remember this competition Landing pretty well we're like ants on your building so when we're on your roofs and taking photos of your windows and outside and Milling all about if you sat right here while we were doing that survey the door would open nine times and that's because each time a different person is coming in to evaluate what they're an expert in looking at so whether it's mechanical electrical Plumbing roofs structural each person has a different set of expertise each person is looking at a different thing when they walk in um so that's the team that

012we bring out so the principal crew here we're real we really appreciate when you send the letter that says hey blue shirts are going to be here but we also really know when you don't send the letter because you get about a thousand phone calls the first day that we show it's only has been very rare that we've seen people not send water but when it happens we're very aware because we're pretty much everywhere in the facility when we come out to evaluate it the state has a lot of very good categories there's like 86 of them covers all the basics Roots Windows walls doors doors Etc mechanical equipment but there's a whole bunch of things that the state hasn't caught up to yet whether it's on the technology or just doesn't ask for information

013about every single thing that you see on the screen is something we now evaluate that doesn't make us really coming up with the list that makes us very diligent clients who have called us and said hey why didn't you look at X Y or Z so every single one of those says was uh why didn't you look at our art rooms and we've learned over the years that as you're developing scope and as you're assessing your facilities and what type of work you want to do it's not necessarily sticking just to the categories that the state wants to see it looks at clocks PA Systems Technology secure entrances the forms that the state fills out hasn't caught up to those so there's about 40 additional categories that we look at when we come out to

014make sure that you guys have a comprehensive picture of what you might want to do in your facilities so to get started we will actually meet with the staff that operates these buildings ahead of Maintenance Randy who we've already dealt with but you're building custodians anybody who really is involved with managing these systems and knowing your boilers in different parts of the buildings we'll also talk with principals or anyone else who you know really will know these buildings well we really want to work as a team it helps us to develop the building conditions survey because the people who use these facilities are the ones who know them the best so for example if we come out to do our building condition survey in the middle of summer we may not know of a heating

015issue that you have been wonderful Wings in the building so this would really you know they could tell us that and we can add that to the building conditions survey you know something that we wouldn't be able to see another example may be if they just ceiling tiles we wouldn't know that your roof above those ceiling tiles is leaking and you know next time you get rain you're going to have another stain on those tiles so this is all just like I said helps us to put this whole survey together and get that into the the actual abilities also on the getting started side of things hopefully you guys don't have it done then that looks quite like that photo on the left um but honestly sometimes it's not that far off either uh one

016something that we do that it's twofold it helps you guys long term it helps us short term in doing the survey is we'll take all of your existing drawings scan them and give you back a digital library so that ends up honestly this just shows better in pictures than me trying to describe it verbally what you can expect to see at the end of that process is you'll see a list of all the buildings that you have you could any number of those buildings you'll see a list of all the years that projects have occurred at that if you click any one of those then you'll see a list of all the trades that had worked on at that time so in a matter of seconds you're into the correct role of drawings and looking

017at the 1939 original drawings per facility rather than having to run to a basement in a different building and try to find a role and try to pull it out and look at it and get it out so that helps us when we're when we see an issue if we see a structural concern a source of water we can track back to where it is but it also is super helpful for your facilities people moving forward to be able to access this information super fast and when there's an issue really typically there's not enough time to get to the drives unless you do have them in a digital format yeah is this a new scanning then by the last time we did it that's a new enhancement that you've added to this this process so

018we don't have scam things already I don't know the answer I don't know if you have scannings already or not yeah and so usually there's usually I would say there's a gamut of like the most recent projects have digital files there's some that's been scanned along the way typically what we can promise you is that we'll whatever basement rooms there are if you have digital files you give them us we'll go down there and they're literally page per page to make sure they have it so the goal of what we walk away is that you can confidently say yes we have every single page again whether it's digital or physical however we have to get there early telling us you know if there's a feeling we're on that when you're playing a game you there's

019that fast track option if there's Fast Track we'll take it there's digital bible stuff the end result will be additional one all right so this is where I said that this form is relatively useless I'm going to explain that now um when SED looks at your building they look at it like the top so look that's a floor plan they see it all as one year they don't look at it like the buck which is all of the different arrows that you've conglomerated your building together in I'm going to show you one example of one of the questions from this form I'll just kind of point out how unhelpful it is if you were trying to plan from it um do you have Windows yes or no relatively easy what materials are they you can

020check however many materials you have all right the condition of the windows all right unsatisfactory Windows okay are all the rescue Windows operable yes you're a blast major reconstruction 2007. all right this story's not adding up we got 2007 Windows unsatisfactory not a big time Gap there how many remaining useful life years three what's the cost to replace at 2.1 million oh that's the only information that the state asks for but they don't necessarily say what other years of reconstruction do you have they just want the latest year so if you did a couple windows at a front entrance your entrance of 2007 we have to lock that down but it doesn't tell the story that you have 1960 windows in the rest of the 90 of the building doesn't tell you what the 2.1

021million is for and it tells you have three years you're going to make these blood it's not super helpful when you're trying to plan which is why there's a huge opportunity at least for us to say how can we do this better so when we look at your facility we'll break this down way more we'll look at every single era and every single type so if you're looking kind of from the bottom right hand corner you would see 1969 glass block and then there might be also some 1969 aluminum you would see those two different material types broken out separately because they have different replacement vintages they have different costs associated with replacing them we'll break everything down so when we say we look at Windows we'll show you this in a minute with a

022demo it breaks down into six to ten types of entries for Windows so that you can look and see what when you're starting to look out to a doing a lot of facilities fall for the database to Show an example of how this actually works all right so this is the database that we would collect and put the information into um you can see at the bottom there there's about 400 entries at this building so while there's 100 or so 120 categories that we evaluate there's 400 entries because of that condition we talked about with us if there's multiple types of Windows or errors we'll enter the data center but our whole goal is that when you look at this you guys may or may not know about Lockport High School but you're going to

023be able to understand what Windows we're talking about where they are what the cost is pretty easily so on the bottom right you can see a floor plan you can see exactly where the windows that we're talking about are located on that facility you can see photos of the windows if anybody had any questions wait which windows are they what do they look like usually a photo truly does speak a thousand words in this regard and there's more if you wanted to see them on the left hand side here there's a whole bunch of that information that Steve does ask for so you can see the type of window we're looking at the condition square footage and units Etc and the bottom left hand is one of the very important pieces in this case the

024windows are in good shape so there's no Replacements lost filming look out seven to ten years for that is anything past that your little guess as good as anybody's on one of my thoughts we don't look that far we look out 10 years that's about the window for planning that we would recommend as well but if we flip through some of these other records again you can see where the windows are you can see photos of what they look like I'm going to get to one here that has a cost there we go so in this case you can see that we saw these windows they're in red a little bit of a story behind the red and the blue here we used to do red light green light it seemed really obvious to us

025until a football game on Thanksgiving where the bills played the Jets they wear red and green this is a little bit of a bad story this week isn't it yeah that's a little more painful um they were wearing red and green and the new story actually the day after that one was more about people being colorblind um just up Route 60 here at Cassadaga we had two colorblind clients at the same time uh and so Tom and Tom called us and said hey we can't tell the difference between your writing your green and we switched to red and blue um so just a timely thing but red means we found it and it doesn't look good there's a replacement associated with it blue means we found it and it does look good and there's no

026Costas um but so you'll see the red there indicated you'll see photos you guys can probably kind of instead of tell like yeah those windows are a little outdated um and then you'll see a replacement cost down here on the left hand side so again we're trying to be super clear this is not something that we want you guys guessing in seven years like what's in that 25 000 the goal is that very clearly as outlined what are we doing what's included versus not uh and that that is very we really spelled out yeah how do you know the cost who's doing the work yeah that's a really good question even more so in the past two years um so there's two other twofold one we have a whole team that looks into cost estimating

027and keeping that database up to date is very important to us and something that we care a lot about we take a lot of pride in making sure it's as close to Accurate as possible the other side is that this is labor and material only so when we do this and in the year that we complete the survey so this will be labor material costs for 2023 when we do the work for you guys um but we don't make an assumption about how you're going to get the work done because if you do it with your maintenance department it's a very different cost than if you do it through a capital project so we don't have any soft costs associated with it so there's no contingencies or allowances or escalation or anything like that on

028it so a project say if you said you wanted to do this item in a project it would actually have a different total cost and we would work with you guys at that point depending on when you wanted to do the project if it's next year versus four years from now again two different numbers so it's not like we can predict that at this point so it's labor and material the year that the surface good question because even just doing aluminum windows now is not 70 square foot but it was back in 18 so good question let's see so the other thing is that there's 400 entries here how do you find something when you want to know how some things that comes up you guys are thinking oh about planning a chemical project how

029are our roofs the goal is that you can type in groups and pull off what you're looking for and get on the same page in a couple seconds so again you guys don't know this building but in a couple seconds we can assess how the roofs are doing here so we've got a junk in red here from 1990 for about about half a million dollars so there's 500 000 there we got some here uh from the later 2000s in blue no not too many worries there and then we've got a chunk here from 2011. big portion of the building that's been done we're in good shape we're at the end of the three records so in the next seven to ten years we've got about five hundred thousand dollars of roofs and it's in that

030specific area we can all look at it together in a couple seconds and be on the same page about one so the goal is also that you can run a search for whatever you're looking for and then be able to talk about it quickly and make a decision to move forward okay that's true for mechanical items and site as well if we type in boilers same thing will happen you'll see the boilers you'll see where they are on the floor plan you'll see some photos you can click over the pictures and see some more if you're super interested through the records there we go there's some older ones right now we're looking at some we don't have to be experts to realize that those are two very different vintages and that kind of what what

031consideration is there is there the mechanical engineer that came out put in their information here and said that you guys you know within three to five years should be considering that replacement and then put in the budget for completing that questions when you said there was plenty of money in funding yeah you mean no matter what you find in all the buildings there's enough coverage oh no but I like that person great question no there's funding available to complete the survey oh yes very different very good question I wish it were the second answer would like to deliver that message more um no there's funding available for getting the information about your facilities so New York State AIDS and you guys know this Renovations of buildings more so than additions Etc like it's hard to

032get in addition it's really easy to do a renovation project because of that they also need you guys getting data about your buildings to know what types of Renovations and maintenance or necessary so yeah good very good let's see but this is the type of data that we will collect we plug it into for each building all the categories that the state requires plus the 40 that we found are very helpful to schools how long does it take start to finish off that question last slide covers it but generally speaking it takes us like two months to set up uh get all your drawing scanned walk with everybody understand the facilities there's a whole bunch of other stuff that goes in there we also confirm your floor plans doesn't matter how recently you had for

033your floor plans updated people put walls and doors and sneaky spots all the time we walk through it literally just make sure everything's perfect before we come out so that people that are putting all the dots and red marks have the exact doors and everything you that's two months um field visits themselves typically somewhere between two and four weeks it just depends on scheduling when you want us here but it's around the span of two two weeks to a month and when I say that we're typically on site three days a week and so it would just depend how many weeks we spend across that time but around a month I usually kind of ask for them and then there's two weeks of like qatc we get everything back from the engineers that were out

034here and The Architects and then we make sure I'll tease across pull it all back together and deliver the data data back that's typically a five-month process to start other good questions so all of this data is also mentioned will be put onto an iPad what we have here uh and turn over to the over to the district so it was very helpful for the facilities people in the district to have that information that they can just quickly and easily search know what they need to see everyone has used this I mean it's it's really an amazing program yeah we also give it all on a flash drive in Excel so all of this is basically a very pretty Excel sheet that usually people named John like the Excel side things uh so we will

035turn that data over in Excel as well and then also in PDF so if you're a person like I don't want to touch it I don't want to mess it up we'll give you a PDF you can't mess it up at all and we also give all of it on a flash drive so that your it crew can throw it on the server somewhere that you guys can access I think so is there a way if we have access to this with it between the five years to something happens the guests that work and make real-time updates or is it is it living for the five years yeah so here since the US so if say we replace this uh if you replace this boiler okay it is that easy to update the house um

036and then you could go in and say like yes this is actually excellent now like it's it's truly live in the sense that you can go in and say yep no I've got 10 years so we own that database yes and that's uh this is actually an amazing question there is nothing proprietary about anything we do if you have any questions about that I would highly recommend calling any number of our references but that's one of our priorities is that like this is something you guys need we love supporting you and doing it but there's nothing proprietary about it that and the drawing scanning some people have also run into the drawing scanning being proprietary again something we're not interested in at all this is totally your data and it's so this is like the

037Microsoft Word of databases it's FileMaker a lot of times schools have it already to be honest but it's the Microsoft Word of databases now I'm going to have your picture in there let's see this was the piece that I was mentioning though when when there's 31 cents per square foot of funding available to your district for this type of project uh the services that we're showing typically take off right about half of that but the state encourages you to get any data that you need about your facilities to make planning easy for the next 10 years at the same time as this so that can be bruskins that can be arc flash testing that can be any number of things scoping out pipes that are blocked and have been for years putting cameras down them

038and figuring out what's going on so that's something that we can work with you on figuring out what other types of things might make sense to do but there is Aid available for doing a whole gamut of things that go along with this a good opportunity to get any information you can to help you plan for the next 10 years for your facilities now this is the part that really matters long-term plan so the question was asked you know can we pay for everything and the answer was no so but the long-term plan you know we're looking to look at how many projects we can do looking 10 years into the future there are different ways that you know different projects that we can do whether it be a capital outlay project which I'm going

039to let Alyssa talk a little bit more about it but overall the building condition survey gives us all these items that we're looking at replacing no and how long we have until they really need replacement and we get to enter that into this long-term plan so Alyssa if you want to run through the different ways that the campus Project's done so the VCS gives you half of the equation gives you the honey-do list right like everybody can relate this to their house they have roofs and there's all the things you have to do to keep water out of your building and all the things like that but then there's things you would want to do maybe at home you want to add a sunroom but here you want to add the steam room and that

040but the VCS can only evaluate your existing facilities it can't dream your dreams so the first step of long-term planning is starting on that dreaming the dream side too so you have to take there's a series of meetings and you know this is not a process that looks the same at every District but there is a process of collecting information to start to say what do we want to do not just what we have to do and generating a list of those two things together and prioritizing them it's very important not just to think like what we have to do there's a lot more fun in what we want to do and pairing those two things is a responsible way to long-term plan um so that's really the beginning of the long-term plan once we

041have that list we'll take that information and we'll look out 10 years now this is where I can caution you you never want to get trapped there is a trap don't plan your next project only and the next 10 years otherwise you're trying to put everything in one project and it's all around about date and that's that's not the real success in long-term planning the success in long-term planning is looking out 10 years when you do that start with capital all these you guys are already committed to doing Capital Islands so when you look at 10 years worth of capital is you're getting a million dollars worth of work done that's a substance or looking at that list of the honeydews and the what to do's and pulling what makes sense to do a hundred

042thousand dollar Capital like out of that list and starting the book out across 10 years and say what makes sense to do there um we'll also look at unique funding sources so smart schools is one that most people are aware of every now and then there's a nyserda grant and who knows what other type of arpa s or all those acronyms uh it might pop up but we'll look at those funding sources and say what types of things can we take off the list and put in those okay um then there's maintenance items sometimes things that look daunting on the building conditions survey can actually become great long-term maintenance so exit signs one of the districts that we worked with that was a great one they had three hundred thousand dollars in exit sign Replacements

043oh that's about the boringest item in the world right but when you can do five or ten thousand dollars at them in a maintenance Budget on an annual basis time you're five years in you've made a serious step in that and then you're slowly chipping away at something that was a relatively boring you know referendum item for the public but you can get it done in a responsive manner along over a longer time period s and then of course we'll look at capital projects um those can you know make a whole bunch of items and disappear off the left hand side but that's a partnership effort too we'll work with your financial advisor to say is there a time that we're coming along and debt drops off and there's a right size project to put

044in with that debt dropping off maybe a few years later there's a little bit of debt coming off and there's a little project that we put in the timeline there and but again we're pulling items off the list starting to put them in a bucket for where they can get done across the course of 10 years and this is a living document this is something that when you know I'll go up the street again here on Route 60 when your roof blows off in March uh you know that's a surprise egg but if you ask Jeff Buckner how I felt about that he wasn't super concerned not that he wasn't but he would say that they were planning on doing it just a year later it was still days under warranty if you lose a

045roof people want it to be 11 days left in warranty I'll recommend that um but the board and Chuck were very much so on the same page that look we had this list of items that we were doing that was a higher priority than the roof the roof was scheduled for next year everybody knew we were going to do it but these were the seven things that came before that it got everybody on the same page in a matter of moments and nobody was arguing about well why didn't we know about them everybody knew about the roof they knew when it was scheduled to be done the fact that there was a free vaccinating between them not ideal but it was also they didn't feel like they had done anything wrong or missed anything it

046was a very helpful document if and when things come up yeah I saw it on the listing of your experts that one person looks at athletic fields do you have experience evaluating districts Athletics field yeah so that that's something that's a really good item to talk about in general especially on the want to do side of things so that's something that like kind of like your the Orange Bowl or like the Early Childhood Learning Center that you guys are considering those really come up heavily on the want to do side of things something that necessarily the BCS can't say like here's what you have and here's what we'll replace it with we need to coordinate together so yes we partnered with a fella Osborne they're top tier in the safer working with us they're the

047only person I'd recommend to you guys to talk about that but that's someone that's on our team that's exactly what they look at and they would also be involved in the dreaming your dreams side of things and helping look at options reviewing things with you putting probable cost estimates together for those items so thank you one of the things that we had talked about and we've talked about it here with boards we're very interested at the appropriate time involving the community of conversation when would you recommend that that happens as we look at this super Russians so this hits on the question that you asked and then also this one so this the first five months is everything up to the orange bar at the bottom that's kind of collecting all the data doing the

048actual building condition survey processing what the building producing surveys has to tell you it's really good to understand that must-do list and the dollar amounts associated with some of the big picture items Windows boilers keeping your buildings warm safe and dry we would typically recommend kind of starting that Outreach process at the end of that five months and beginning to pull in the community groups or you know teacher committees or staff committees Administration Etc at that point in terms of the schedule I know Alyssa mentioned you know it's five or six months from you know start until we come over than iPad and before we get started you know I think you guys are pretty familiar with some snowstorms so we want to make sure that we can actually see you know your roofs and

049see the site issues that you may have so we are probably looking at starting this sometime mid to late spring to make sure that we can actually see all of the facilities especially outside that we need to see somebody knows how to hold off the snow in the early part of the computer so so this time schedule starts um with collecting existing drawings but so so the board has been giving your presentation because we've had presentations to the board before and it's really difficult to get up to speed as somebody's talking but having the presentation before we're kind of in the mindset of what you're talking about so we can kind of get in the mood here yeah um what happens before zero I mean are you doing anything with our staff and saying what

050are your concerns what you know what's working what isn't do you have any leaks uh anything like that yeah so typically we typically I would say we scan the drawings so we can scan drawings when it's snowing outside that doesn't have any influence on it it's really just that field visit portion that can't occur so that's the blue bars in the middle so that's the only thing that's weather everything else in there can occur before them and yes one of those gray bars is walking through the facility and Gathering those existing concerns starting to meet with people and understand where there's issues that we can have the team dive in deeply to that so are you preparing them to which may be beneficial as part of the answer to your questions we have regular meetings

051yeah now it's going right okay in those meetings we have not a comprehensive list but we do have a list of different things that hey we put this down we're going to look at that later kind of thing and part of that is discussion of future Capital outlay as part of that is conditions of fields you know all kinds of different things we do have a slowly building list okay another part of this timeline which we talked about was I don't have the budget money and this year's budget for who the conditions survey even though you get affiliate that you have to but by having this kind of wait till the snow's off the ground a couple months to gear up it's going to transcend into the next fiscal year and then we're able to

052okay so once we we get the five months and then we're maybe then starting to collect the the dream list what is a typical time frame five plus what till we actually like this is what we're doing that I don't have a golden answer for um that is something that genuinely looks different for every district and I'll kind of explain like the gamut Productions sure so sometimes and I would say the shortest possible is like two months later you have a plan because you gave it to one person to prioritize all the data and made all the decisions and they didn't involve anybody else um it's happened I've seen it done I wouldn't recommend it necessarily but that's the fastest way sure more likely is that you digest that information you're reviewing it with a

053team that team probably takes anywhere from three to six months to truly digest and processing Nation basically having like a monthly meeting to meet I would say you guys already have a head start because you've been working with us for a number of years I'm outlining information growing a list meeting monthly to review it so that process may take a look maybe a little bit faster but I would generally say like a year from the day we start you will have a plan in front of you that is understandable and digestible I could go faster if you're in a rush I've seen it done in you know record time if there's really a reason to but usually it's somewhere around 36 months as a group we will work through everything the last time we did

054it was about a year start to finish that we weren't meeting you know consistently a few times a week some of them spread out so you have that aspect of it and also you have to take a look or that land with retiring debt you also have to take a look at what the timing is for example you may not want to have it where you land a vote in the middle of January so so I mean that that obviously the next question is to get your plan then we have to figure you know what's the timeline to get funding approved when is anything actually happening yeah and so that's really where we will work with your financial advisors to also just look at when is debt falling off and if there's a then is

055it responsible or irresponsible because if you're going to miss a window to go out to your voters and miss a window of death following up that's not good that's what we would absolutely want to be in front of and there's nothing that has to wait for the schedule we could at least start with that to make sure we're not missing a window anywhere a piece of the equation also is it true that New York State or the state comes in and also does an assessment of new buildings or provide that's us we're their agents okay all right so there isn't a separate entity and I think that's really why they have spread it across you know they only do 20 of districts each year because I think when they first put this out here in

0562000 was it they said everybody needs to provide a building condition survey and then they realize everyone's sending us building conditions survey we don't have the staff to really review everybody's building tradition surveys so that's why they now assign youth in the district uh takes care of that your Architects very much so appreciate that division across five years we're their agents agents that's why they have that criteria just to clarify that because I think this has been a little confusion so when you talked with the district in 2019 it was assumed at that point that there was going to be a survey that following year I would have yes so we were kind of anticipating the blue shirts and all that happening next year and then the state changed the rule to the 20 which

057pushed us to 23. correct and that's why there's been a gap at this point between and I would have lost that conversation and what's happening yes and I would have genuinely lost the bet on the state making that decision in the time that they did um so if you had asked me in 2019 will this change for next year I would have said very unlike in the same way that I you know I would love to see capital outlay projects increase to 250 000 it's been talked about on an annual basis every single year prior every five year window they talked about spacing the building conditions survival because Architects basically said that there's no way we can even help just the clients we've worked with and try to do them all in one year so

058I I was not thinking they were going to help us out and actually space a very was in March of 2020. it was three months into the requirement so there were some districts that even started doing a building condition survey and then the state changed and the change to 250 000 would be beneficial because you could take a look at things like a blacktop at Wheelock you don't get a lot for 80 to 90 000 now after the architecture so if you get an opportunity to vote on 250 000 . and you're still getting back here 82.7 percent but yes that's exactly what happened and definitely caused some confusion for a lot of people in 2020 about when they're both a conditioned survey will be the company partners for athletics does that mean that any

059survey you do all that yeah so as much as I would love to say we're an expert in everything we are not so we partner with a key group of people so we have a civil engineers who's the group that I mentioned uh they do some landscape and civil design then we have electrical Mechanical plumbing and Structural Engineers so it's a team of people that make up that group we're the lead in the sense that the architect hires all of those individual s but that's something that we're also pretty proud of in the sense that we can select the consultant we don't have in-house any of those which means that we can demand the 18 from every entity that we work with or we can drop them so I don't have a C team that

060I have to work with in my own office I can demand The A Team from every office that we work with or they don't get the job so it's something that we're very proud of in the structure that we've set up it's the two owners came from a company that had in-house and learned that they didn't want to do that when they started their own firm and it's worked out really nicely but yeah it's a team of people that come up not just so we don't have to request the Athletics separately that is a part embedded yeah yes and you said the here it says the cost up to 31 cents per square foot the do you ever exceed no I wouldn't recommend it and I've never seen someone even come close to it yes

061even with paying Architects Engineers civil Circle and doing a whole bunch of additional Services only one District I've ever seen even honestly get close to that it's a very generous dial come out from the state for completing an existing region when we do the the want and the dream list are those experts a part of those conversations so any follow-up basically anything that we so we don't I would say we vet it with a group from your Administration to make sure it's an idea you'd actually like us pricing and looking at and developing and designing Etc but yes they're all at the table for them you guys say hey we want to look at chilled beams in our building instead of a boiler system that we have we would then bring that group in and

062say all right let's look at this okay great yeah a group in the back you got any questions all right anything else on this one so so the one question that you have probably never been asked and I don't even know how to ask this okay but we do have a group of I'm going to say a dozen dozen half seniors and back okay you have a very unique um position um and yet you're professional if you were talking to a group of a dozen half seniors okay and Advising them to get into your field um was this your original field um I don't want to say how did you get here but I'm trying what I'm trying to do is I'm trying to engage our seniors yeah and say you know there's there's opportunity

063for for careers out here and to be able to bring somebody in from the outside that we typically don't um I I guess I'm do you have any do you have any words of wisdom sure sure so I will admit that the only reason I'm an architect is because I got in the wrong line at Penn State I was supposed to go on a tour for an engineering tour and got on the wrong line it's the architecture building blew my mind there I was amazed and thought this looks way more fun than engineering my dad was an engineer I thought my entire life I'd be an engineer and I'm so happy I'm not an engineer but when I came home from that tour my dad did buy me a book that's at a thousand and

064one reasons not to become an architect however I would highly recommend considering backfield uh architecture is is a very interesting field in the sense that if you're a jack of all trades and almost an expert of none but you get the opportunity to work with Experts of all Fields it allows you to be creative or Technical and I never knew in a million years that I would have an opportunity to develop a database and be kind of on the I.T side of things too um so if you've never considered architecture or and if you're at all interested I would be more than happy than Jeff to develop we're both licensed Architects um so that's something you know there's a professional accreditation that you can get as well and trans it translates um we don't hate

065on engineers at all though so and they're very critical in our work um so I would say on both sides of that realm engineering or architecture it's it's fun to be a part of because you're developing something that doesn't exist you're helping renovate and you're service based which is you know can be scary in times of downturn but usually mostly good um but you're you're always working for someone which I find very rewarded yeah I mean to me I did always want to be an artist it just was always you know putting the other things and you know I mean building Legos Lincoln Logs you know just drawing different things like just constantly as a kid I was always drawing uh so to me is just always something I knew I wanted to do but

066I do agree with Alyssa I mean to be able to look at a building or look at a site and say what can we put here that really fits here and you know you work with the owner on their vision and really make it come together uh it's a it is a rewarding career here's your interesting fact I started as an engineering student I took the number side that's interesting I always thought that's right we actually uh I mean my personal team in the office I had a couple of people who went to school for cosmetology yeah and they just I don't know what made them switch but I mean it's just no beautiful things and now they just transitioned that from making people beautiful to making beautiful buildings yeah it's definitely interesting the number

067of career trajectories that lead to being an architect because you can become a licensed architect with two years of schooling and then a lot of years of basically like apprenticeship more or less so the paths to getting there aren't all the same and they very very widely at our office it ends up with the same you have to take the same set of examinations if that's the same but the way to get there isn't necessarily like it's not like an attorney where you have to do four years whatever three years it's like there's definitely a lot of different ways to get up so thanks for a good team yeah I think it's been great okay any other questions thank you so much [Applause] and I just want to remind uh people who might be viewing

068this later from a community or a parent or even a student's point of view there are moments when people reach out to myself our admin team our Board of Education of our facilities foreign and listen to that feedback and this is where this begins to play out you know we can't help that we're attached to our condition survey in 2023 so this is really Our Moment to really process all this information and then think about how we best move forward so we're excited about that and just for those of you who have given us that feedback we want you to know we listen and this is uh the beginning of the process to address at least some of those things but then looking at that 10-year plan and when when does that happen moving forward

069so looking forward to getting started thank you thank you great good presentation so we have uh minutes from the last meeting about October 25th I have a motion to bring that to the floor for approval Mr Johnston give me a second thank you Miss Goa any corrections questions all those in favor signify by saying aye all opposed next we have the financial Treasures report and the budget status report uh looking again at June and then July and August Mr Forks I think I said last time or two minutes ago when we did his unit that wasn't final standpoint so we did have a couple of lastmen and Justin's dealing with make sure he has the end cap summer programs correct so basically on the expenditure side it was used from where you saw last time

070by about 63 000 and the corresponding Aid adjustments it's not a significant change in account it did offset but I didn't want to not address the fact that they were a little different than what you saw okay okay thank you for July and August for the budget status reports really not a whole lot going on um is I really mean some of the disorders that you get submitted Supply activities nothing out of the ordinary no I mean just we're seeing the things that we thought were a little bit High to continue to be high some of the utility expenses but obviously in some of the United States and not use as much electric but they are attracting a little bit higher than the start of last year before things so so since we've uh approved

071the budget back in April May uh April for the board and then made for the voters um inflation has continued on do you see any issues John performs yeah I think you know looking down the road and Dr zillock's got this conversation on a regular basis I'm concerned a little more than I normally have been part of it is because group who've decided to kind of reduce the amount of surplus that we've been carry which we did that not anticipating all these other things that happened and you see things like the Articles recently about the potential of a diesel fuel issue which will drive our costs tremendously there we've seen over time you know five six seven years we've had an influx of higher cost students and those require placements that sometimes I'll just replication

072so those are the things that we regularly talk about and you're going to see I think again the impact of increased utility costs yeah but we're trying to keep a handle on it uh now and look at things that we can maybe hold off on or not quite do the same way and hopefully we don't get to a point that we have to have any kind of significant video across the generates this week at this point okay but it's going to require a different kind of tracking than I've done in the past and and David I just Piper before me starts it literally today it's like oh good I think I got a way to do this and then 10 minutes later oh that's gone in some ways interesting but also some question of that

073job invite to our Siemens energy projects ago you know the projects are coming up especially now that we've had those present s that are in the pipeline to create we actually just had a gentleman whose Name Escapes me at the moment he came in and did basically an energy evaluations within the last two weeks and part of that is when we try to tie them to see available on our surgeons the outside wall past the parking lot s yeah yeah definitely okay okay um and that really takes care of the the budget status report and the revenue uh for June to offer Revenue not for July oh so I'm going to use this to July again not a whole lot of activity in July they're always here behind the categorically we also picked up about

07413 000 which was about 10 from BOCES and 2500 whereabouts from our other partners just for school and then August again we had some additional summer handicap money that came in changes all right and typically of that time of year right before school starts to start to pick up non-resident tuitions we had almost twenty thousand dollars of that come in it was a amount that they have to have before school starts or something so I would say all those are normal July August kind of things okay any questions and then the uh if if I could get a motion to bring the treasures report to the floor of the questions how important and a second second commercial Mr Forbes Treasures report no issues there everything else everything yeah plus one still equals two yeah okay

075that's good that's good any questions on that all those in favor of approving the treasury's report for July and August signified by saying not saying hi hi thank you next we have the review and approve the 2022-2023 school Tax Collectors report um if I could have a motion to bring that to the floor and then we'll get some numbers here absolved his hand and it was let's go okay so we're we're a little sort of some numbers here I know that we're working on this weekend so um do you want to take that Mr azaleax or do you want to pass it on to Mr Force well I'm just going to say we're going to pass a number but uh I just I just want to share that um absolutely as we're processing information as

076we're making decisions certainly we do have taxpayers in mind maybe we absolutely appreciate the support from our taxpayers and you know as we're thinking about costs to the district we're always trying to think of how do we continue to maintain our educational program how do we continue to provide a great experience for our students but also do it at a cost um that's reasonable and can be supported by our taxpayers so you know please know we keep that in mind please know that's part of the mindset of our district and obviously there are dollars and cents involved here that do matter but we just want to recognize everybody that contributes to the effort and it really keeps us running and allows our students to experience all that freedomi offers so having said that in terms

077of the figures John what do you have for us yeah I'll fill in the gaps here just a couple of quick things for the word to know our end of collection period is November 1st month that you collected you're entitled to add on a percentage for any legal taxes so for example September is zero but then when you add total repo September and October two months you're allow two percent and then you get into November you're entitled to three percent so typically we will collect one day in November which allows us to get to that three percent figure so by virtue of that being last week in my virtue of the meeting today and by virtue of the fact that the next meeting wasn't until late November that would put a real crunch on the

078county to process the County taxes so I apologize if we didn't have the information for Friday but we wanted to allow the time for the postmark some things to come through especially with the way the mail's been on occasion lately so I think we got through all that on Monday we had a couple of last minute surprises but according to those no problem um I will point out that we did collect 95.26 percent of the local portion of the levy the 9 portion corresponds to 95.03 last year if you take a historical look over a long period of time was generally in that 94 95 collection rate so we're very appreciative appreciate with any supporting that portion of our life so in terms of the numbers under number one the net School tax levy was

07916 million three hundred eighty two thousand one hundred forty eight dollars and one cent the one rounding adjustments across the five towns a couple one up couple went down and made it out to one cent and when the county ran the numbers collections to date locally was 13 million 774 354.50 our unpaid School tax amount therefore became seven hundred seventy six thousand six dollars and seven cents the unpaid star amount is one million eight thirty one seven eighty seven forty four and I will comment on that uh typically we don't see that until mid-January so no need for surprise or urgency there it's on track for normal the unpaid taxes in a star combined is 2 million 607 793.51 [Applause] okay so also if you take a look at number four that is just a

080copy and paste error from previous years when we had someone different so we want to strike back on the agenda because so so we are striking four do we need to change our no no I'll just it'll just reflect okay okay um so um we had a question the other day um of the unpaid tax payments from from taxpayers for property um at what point in time is there a cut off and and we collect that from the the difference from this County okay I have a good question so how it works is our collection period ended on the first of November until we realizes much like our 17 minutes ago that on the first you're not going to be completely cut because you have people that are post more so they allow this year

081it's until November 18th for us to gather any last-minute stragglers which we will not collect and process will simply take after the 18th of November they won't do that any longer and they also sign a higher penalty amount for their collection because I think they were eight percent last year or seven percent so what will happen is they shut off the collection on the 18th maybe in the process of re-levy it goes if you haven't paid your school tax it will go on your county tax bill in January as a separate line indicating a relevy school tax amount as part of that whole process the district has made so look 100 and we'll get the balance of 776 000 plus penalties late March early oh it's that late okay and that's that's the typical time

082frame and so at the end of the day the district was 100 and we don't get into the Foreclosure right that's right that's right I didn't realize yes just so sorry even if the county doesn't collect it they make us whole because then they deal with whatever down the road any questions on these numbers or anything or oh okay okay um Miss Sligo yes Mr Johnston yes and Mr Marshall yes and I will need each of the board members to sign each of the five pages thank you Mr Forbes um next we have the approval of an appointment for personnel for probationary positions Jordan so salgouda as a teacher's aide can I have a motion to bring that to the floor please and a second second go away um oh yeah so this is a

083position that's remained vacant it is not an addition to what we had budgeted we're happy to have Jordan on board and a little bio information a graduate of Dunkirk associate's degree from JCC previous Forest Hill Elementary School as a teacher the teacher also work at Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab Center secretary and also has customer service experience from Dollar Tree so again another quality height look forward to working together for the good of the students great any questions from the board all those in favor signify by saying aye uh thank you it takes us to our superintendent's report resilience a couple things to share tonight again we continue to send out some more either weekly or bi-weekly automation this um yeah um this week we've tried to incorporate this it doesn't always work out but Jack

084tuccio was our guest video recorder this week so he shared a message did a nice job with some information kind of summarizing what is within the s'more in terms of my message this week again we continue to think about those Focus areas and then the action step that back up those Focus areas so next on the list two things and one we've already talked about um the first one to establish an environment that supports dignity for all students and adults by recognizing a better understanding the role of diversity equity and inclusion within our district so one of our action steps is really to create a focus on and kind of rally around this concept of belonging as an overarching theme throughout the district really thinking about that mindset throughout this school year a place where

085everyone belongs or everyone feels comfortable everybody's welcome into our school community that will also we'll start this relatively quickly uh require us to define and explain some relevant terminology across the district so when we say words like diversity Equity inclusion belonging we have a common vocabulary and we all understand that these here in Fredonia what those words mean we're also looking to establish additional Communications that really promotes this sense of belonging throughout the district and the larger Community not just here at the school and also thinking about how we enhance family and Community engagement through increased accessibility and just an example of that is the good work that's being done in terms of our Hispanic population and last year adding at least one position that really coordinates communication and really is the liaison to those

086families especially those who might struggle to communicate English and that's just one example of those athletes also another Focus area again connecting to our presentation at night around upgrading facilities and really thinking about an environment that's conducive to teaching learning and overall performance and there are a few action steps involved in this one of them that actually happened tonight in the presentation from Young and white or really having a mindset and a focus of physical Safety and Security for all our buildings beginning to prepare for the upcoming building conditions survey or ECS sometimes it's abbreviated in the 2320s for school year again the presentation tonight is the beginning of that process we're also involved in an energy assessment and audit as John started to mention as part of that thinking and that prioritization and also

087beginning with the initial planning of a capital project on down the road but also really thinking about that 10-year window that was mentioned today I'm also conducting periodic visual inspections and walk throughs by appropriate District personnel which includes the Board of Education throughout the school year as part of our routine process and really understanding and getting to know our facilities so again just two of the other priorities that we have in place and those action steps that back up those processes um also wanted to just say thank you it is Google psychologist week say thank you to all of our school psychologists for the good work that they do throughout the district and also on a lighter note you might have noticed that we have a therapy dog who is beginning after the board was

088good enough to pass a policy regarding therapy dogs last year uh Mr Wright at Creed six has his dog certified and you know we do go through some rigorous presentations here so I sat down with the dog whose name is Yost which is actually named after a coach at Michigan University from back in the day and we had a good conversation about some of our regulations and some of the things that expect of any employee and luckily yoast was on board and responded very well to those uh those questions and I was able to to sneak through the interview process did you interview him or did he interview you like any good interview is a combination or both of them that's good yeah as you can tell he was very very attentive yeah um I

089also wanted to skip down to our Sports and I don't want to steal any Thunder um from our principles but we've had a great year across the board but one thing that hasn't got a whole lot of detection is that we did have a football team win the championship the Lakeshore Football League coached by our uh school security advisor Tim kathermeier so we won the men uh mentioned the young man you can see him up there in the right hand corner and a nice job and you know not only are we having a good football season at the varsity level but apparently we'll we'll have some up and coming athletes who will carry the torch on from also in the news articles that we include include each week you never know what you might find

090there or what articles might pop up there was a great article on Michael Hawk who is a graduate in 2012 from the district also attended Swedish it only also has some connections to at least one board member here in the room and uh you know I learned a lot not knowing Michael not be here in 2012 but just a great career in the Fine Arts and path that started here in Fredonia and has really taken off a very impressive nicely done but we just wanted to recognize Michael here tonight as a Fredonia grad and somebody who's out there doing great things that started right here at our school district um I also just wanted to mention as we have done over the past couple years the Veterans Day Parade which starts at 1 30 on

091Thursday this is a great event thanks for heading up this effort and being sort of the organizer behind the scenes we're looking forward to that and also just wanted to mention last board meeting you did talk about the health care worker bonus we submitted everything that we needed to submit and that should be a forthcoming in the near future we also talked to him a lot a little bit about test scores at our last meeting and I will have more information on that at our next meeting I thought I might be able to have it for this evening but I was not able to do that so those two things are in the works unless there are any questions or comments that would wrap up the superintendents report for tonight okay thank you okay um

092so we have comments from the audience and I don't see anybody really interested in coming forward addressing the board so we'll pass by that the next regular meeting of the board of education is November 29th that's three weeks from tonight we're not going to meet right before Thanksgiving break so that will be in three weeks uh six o'clock right here in the high school library um you know I appreciated your your um superintendent's report but I would also like to emphasize a lot of times football gets a lot of attention but there's a lot of other athletes a lot of other programs and I'm sure Mr Paskey will hit on some of those tonight that were we've got some great students in this District who are achieving great things so I think that that's a

093wonderful thing um Miss Han do we have do you have any any questions or announcements uh questions or announcements no not really I'm excited about all our sports teams yes and the model un that was exciting also I think we came in second sorry not trying to steal from you either um but I do have an intern who's in the model U.N and another intern on the football team yeah so it's exciting thank you and I thought that presentation was excellent tonight very informative yeah very important first of all uh just ditto with the with all our athletes achieving fine things and and keeping their grades up as they're doing it um obviously to The Varsity soccer team the girls soccer team had a great season football is still going so that's impressive and a

094thank you to the Community member for communion community members for being patient and understanding as we continue to adjust our pickup routine after school all the changes we make we're doing it to make sure everybody is safe so let's talk to several community members and they're very understanding so safety Mr Hawk um proud of all these kids yes I've got someone on sports yeah it's pursuing that you know I just got to say I'm proud of all of our kids yes and yeah get some momentum going hopefully because it's not a short process so let's let's get it going and how exciting exciting stuff all around musical yeah all fun things yeah the same really interesting informative uh presentation that was great great article on your son I remember Fiddler on the Roof like it

095was yesterday it's so good um I had this I was gonna say the same thing about the girls soccer team I mean back-to-back section Champs um great fun player from um Mr Johnston I'm blessed um yeah the presentation was fantastic it's really great to get that going and uh welcome Yost yes good job with the interview yeah thank you standard practice Dr Wright any updates thank you um our curriculum Council um this year has taken a new approach breaking into three subcommittees for other men being the one large group and it's been really exciting to see these smaller groups tribute dig in um and really want to invest and learn you know um to be more experts in them versus The Wider discussion to go back and bring back the representative bodies and so to

096see the different um teachers and staff members William service providers who are committed to their job as instructional leaders and that's who serves on this and it's just been really exciting to dig in deeply with the curriculum work and to see that and to gain some Traction in three different areas so that's when a positive um you know step forward um I'm not don't want to take anything away from Sister John in terms is traveling but the three of us had the opportunity to go to a conference in Phoenix last week all about stem education and that was with was Ed um Steve Wozniak and we had a chance to be on stage and take a picture with the Waze and have conversations and that was exciting and it was really interesting to be with

097the contingency of other Western New York districts and to have opportunities in that conference time to talk with them about their processes or establishing stem in their schools funding opportunities from various places schools from other states were there so we could see the differences and their structures and gain ideas and exchange information and network and you know opportunities to really kind of expand ourselves as we strive to really you know those vision statements of innovation Dynamic Global experiences and to to know that so many are neighbors nearby is just so exciting and to have them say now remember what we presented was you know 10 years worth of work you know what we did to start and that helps us to not feel when you see those finished products you're often like ah and then

098you're like okay and so that was really wonderful to make those connections have those have the time to steep yourself in something for myself not being um you know I'm a Humanities girl English and history so it was really neat to think you know in my role as curriculum how can I broaden myself to be able to support initiatives I need to do my own learning in my own girl so it was a very exciting time um you've got everything in the high school Under Control is it going well very well they break into three parts so first part I just want to talk we're just finishing up the quarter on Thursday so since we have a four day week this week I thought it would be nice to meet with our freshmen on Monday

099our sophomore is on Tuesday in the Juniors and seniors will be coming up the next two days and I'm just kind of giving give it a little feedback a little feeling of hey this is where we are right now and here are some really positive things and here are some things that you can work on so we've been doing class meetings each morning with that and great it's been awesome to get back into that we used to do that before topic and this is the first time we're back into doing this and we're going to do it at the the end of each quarter and we talked about the importance that right now this is the last time we have this three full quarters ahead of us and so there are changes that need to

100be made this is the time to do that but it wasn't you know sometimes you hear stories like oh we heard we were the worst class that ever came through that's not so that was just really really giving them some hope and giving them a feeling of acceptance and belonging that hey we're in this together and a couple of areas that we improve on secondly it's one of the sports day so we hit the girls soccer team fantastic but they they won again uh for for their uh their their sectional title the football team going to Highmark Stadium awesome but a couple that weren't mentioned that I want to make sure that I hit the cross country team competed in sectionals this week uh they're trying to trencher he's an eighth grader but here individual

101states as an 8th grader so congratulations to him and Diving Elizabeth Pucci Shaffer took first at sectionals and Leah Marsh took fourth so grabs to both girls and to their coaches and then the the last piece that I wanted to hit is the model un and uh there's a little bit time consuming but just the amount of time effort and success that they have is worth hearing this so we're working with Pat Newell to give get this information out to everybody tonight so this year we had over 50 Fredonia students that participated in the 70th annual gaming University modeling United Nations conference alongside hundreds of other high school students from across several States each delegation wrote a musician paper this year we submitted 16 position papers since the first week of school the model un

102team meets every Friday after school to work under position papers their dedication has been exceptional and their hard work certainly paid off only three Awards total are given in this category Jenny Jenna truby and Patrick cotter's position paper was awarded second place of all of the papers this is a major achievement several for learning students are recognized for their outstanding effort in representing their their countries at the conference Ava Hartung Andrew Cowan and lupicolo won best delegate awards for their work in ga1 and child labor this is a back to back Wednesday one best delegate Awards last year Ava carer secured a second best or second place best delegate award for her work on the crisis Committee in addition to being recognized for their paper Janet truby and Patrick Cotter were recognized as third place

103best delegates for their work on ga3 South American Rebecca lash's leadership I'm the security Council was acknowledged as she was was awarded third place best delegate Greta frerix Angelina May and Joella Bowser received honorable mentions for their diplomacy and efforts in ga2 on wildfires last year Gannon ended the new committee the Press Corps as students development attended committee meetings and post updates on social media and write press releases and articles writing as a reporter for the New Yorker Alex Weiss received a third place best correspondent award finally Fredonia won a second place overall best allegation from all of the schools that participated this award recognized the work of all of our students who attend the weekly meetings here at Fredonia and they perform their best at the conference so congratulations to all of them sorry

104that took so long but I think very very deserving yeah it's a wonderful program um and I'm going to probably ask you a question you may not know the answer to but um when when this model un started Fredonia not quite 10 years ago maybe oh no no no next year is year 30. you're 30. yes okay so the 29th year so can you can you give us a little bit of uh uh indication of the participation through the years I mean 50 to me is just astounding it has exploded um it used to be a very small eclectic group of students who you know maybe 10 to 12 for a very very long time I think that when Patrick Newell took it over is when it really started to to develop and not that

105it wasn't doing a good job in the past but just the sheer numbers of kids that were excited to be in it it's grown in the past several years he's done a very nice job it's kind of neat that they've taken so many kids and like they have to have like three chaperones that go and because they have so many kids just to watch them all and it's over a Friday and a Saturday it's a trivia competition yeah University so it's nice wonderful program yeah so I what I didn't know yeah yeah well thank you yes before we leave the Press Corps I meant to mention so it was our very own Braden who wrote the article uh almost the walk so well done yeah yeah yeah sorry if I could if I could just

106mention Pat Newell in we added Tom Donovan as a second advisor last year and so now now there are two advisors for the uh the whole show you know they've done a great job thank you Miss Troutman well we have our Washington DC trip let's speak it into the weekend it went very well we had about 46 kids go some mostly seventh graders but we had a few extra seats with some eighth graders went it was a really good time we had about six chaperones that went with them um our Middle School Musical is coming up Friday November 18th and 18th and 19th I put 29th on my paper for some reason Matilda the Musical so I hope everybody can come it's going to be an amazing show we have so many of our students

107involved quarter one is coming to a close at the end of the week and so it's hard to believe 10 weeks are already over um but it's a fresh start for a lot of our kids so we're excited for that to happen and there instilled my thunder we wanted to congratulate Trenton we're going to do a class battle down Thursday for him in the middle school so we're all excited about supporting him important accomplishment Mr drawling Sir oh great so we continue to highlight the positive behaviors at the elementary school with the use of abilities um it's it's gathered a lot of momentum and I'm looking to expand it onto the bus because you know our friends make mistakes on the bus you know so I'm really looking to support um run this program you

108know from the start of the day to the end of the day so I talked to a couple of bus drivers and you know they think it's a good idea so that would be a great way to um continue to highly positive uh month of November we look at gratitude so students are engaging in a gratitude note writing campaign where every adult every adult on a campus will receive a handwritten note from one of our uh first through fourth graders which is kind of exciting um and then we had a unique opportunity with one of our classrooms in second grade it's a partner up with some seniors in Mr haas's technology classroom where they engage in a little catapult building um activity and I I love that because we are a unique campus that we

109are together and I really want to make those connections stronger and happen more frequently because they're so rewarding for I think the seniors but I know our second graders love that activity so I look forward to doing more projects like that and then I work with our teachers we're engaging in just data conversations where I've recently received some access to our state assessment data like wild amounts of of data and we want to just look at it and see celebrate some of our accomplishments and look at some of our areas where um you know we could we could grow and we'll see where those conversations take us so this uh this gratitude project yes um I have heard some very interesting mental health statistics uh studies that that mental health has helped tremendously by by

110giving gratitude not receiving it but by giving it so uh what a great program yeah that's great so thanks for bringing that to my attention but yeah our kids are going to make this project so yeah good thanks Miss Farrell you know I agree with two week is something I wanted to comment on to um it's a November tradition it was really accepted by the National Association of school psychologists and our kids do some active work in that every year and I just think it's a nice time to reflect for everybody on people that have supported our endeavors and just really paid for the simple thank you and just feel that you know understand that a small gesture can really go a lot more so I wanted to touch on that as well and kind

111of a long nap team doctors mentioned this is National School of Psychology week and I wanted to recognize our school sites individually because these folks are amazing practitioners we have Laura wheeler Steve her straight excuse me we have an intern this year Aubrey Cunningham and we also have an itinerant Provider from BOCES that's working with us right now her name is Katie car patero so these folks are doing amazing work so and this week is really to recognize them so well worth the time to mention that just a couple of things from the classroom our middle school special ed teachers have shared some information I think some of this was in the presentation that they're supporting and fostering student literacy in their classrooms using a method called beavers theater so students are reading and Performing

112and are able to share their skills and successes and have format with classmates in a really fun and dynamic way and I just wanted to mention that with our secondary teachers continue to focus on state performance plan indicator 13 also called transitioning the IEP and we are working right now very hard to prepare to submit paper paperwork a lot of paperwork to stay dead for their review we have our deadline next get paperwork in and you know so we're working again on developing goals towards post-secondary outcomes for our 15 to 21 year old people students so great Ms Piper I do have to second the shout out to the school sites Audrey Cunningham that we lack two days a week which is a Fredonia graduate she's just wonderful she's been a great addition to our

113staff that is your internship but she's doing a great job so thank you for that shout out for after she's doing great um I also have to mention that my son's Keith was in fifth grade and Fiddler on the Roof and he still talks about how Okay as a senior um working together that was his first music myself um we are celebrating Hispanic Discovery day yeah we like and it is actually November 19th but we're celebrating it on November 14th as our school um just again just really a sense of belonging for everybody and the way they're really support that population so it's being a discovery day um and we're spending a lot of time in November in our Outdoor Classroom it's amazing how much the kids are out there every single day they're enjoying

114it they have little rakes throughout the week and leave they're spending a lot of time outside so that Outdoor Classroom has definitely been a lot of even number well it's been beautiful weather for that great yeah Mr Forbes are you going to break leaves with the Wheelock students and there's one quick thing we're going to need to audit committee meetings and time before the next four meeting so I'll put it on okay so she has a three member of the week before is Thanksgiving so that's what over the next two weeks okay this Lego for me nothing okay if there is nothing else uh the board anticipates the need to enter in an executive session to discuss matters pertaining to particular Personnel so if I could have a motion to move into executive session miss

115Han and a second all those in favor signify by saying aye aye opposed we are in executive session at 7 35. thank you everyone government students
