yes potential um [Music] um be back [ __ ] we're going to call it so you're very proud this yes um johnson louise florera drew hogan i mean blackson coach juan perez chris and lee win [Applause] um okay so wanted to recognize cole for those accomplishments as well drew he earned academic all-state honors for cross-country he also was going to be representing the ocean on the all-star team on november 20th and he got all-state honors in cross-country you both place you're gonna have to remind me you were 18th and 12th in the state and i think i recognized that it's not 20 to play as i saw a picture of that so congratulations [Applause] we have a certificate for ava because she was recognized for demonstrating extraordinary sportsmanship to a neighboring nlc student athlete and got recognized
for that so we wanted to make sure she also received a certificate um last but not least we have parkside represented here i'd like to call bets mcferrin and scott garvin that's the principal scott is the tosa at parkside found out that parkside was recognized by the u.s news world report as one of the best elementary schools in indiana they placed in the top third actually there were only two elementary schools in our surrounding county that even scored higher than them and that's a lot of elementary schools so we wanted to recognize parkside they brought lots of teachers here [Applause] congratulations to you and the entire staff students parents at parkside it's great when you win these kind of awards because it's just natural outcome of the good work you do every day thank you
thank you i have a little speech [Music] so i just wanted to say i appreciate the recognition we also realize that this is based on strictly task force and that all gcs schools are trying to work hard for student success this was based on the 1819 ilearn scores we haven't taken it since um and clatt were a class school and what i what i found is class coaching helps us to develop the student far beyond a test score so whether your test scores are high or low or doing a great job with their kids [Applause] so all of you who came for recognition this is your moment thank you [Music] as they're working their way out we'll invite our next speaker to come and give a construction update it's been a while since we've seen
it months is [Music] is the punch list wrapping up is it still something also it's not complete we've got some minor tweaks here and there for the heating law and yeah and we got 11 month walkthrough and then assuming that schools yes schedule yeah well i on behalf of the board i want to thank yan for everything you've done here it's been a wonderful process we've gone through i would say it's probably been one of the cleanest build programs that has probably occurred in this district quite some time if not maybe ever you know we remained on budget under budget uh which considering what we went through uh over the last 18 months that's that's remarkable and to stay on schedule uh so we've got each school it was fantastic so kudos to all the
weigan team we appreciate all that effort thank you we'll move on to item 2.3 chamberlain before we get again i just want to say thank you for allowing me the opportunity to chat today and then also to our admin team for the support and help along the way so before i begin basically one of our our number one goal this year is to increase our reading and achieve manufacturing um and so we have three things that we're trying to do we're trying to increase our ilearn ela proficiency by 17.5 we'd like to increase the percentage of students who pass irene 3 before exemptions from 58.2 to 80 percent and the big one which is underlined here because we're going to highlight a little bit is to have our k2 students have an 80 achievement rate
for targeted reading foundational skills and priority standards so how we're going to do that it really takes three things we've got targeted professional development we've developed a response assessment plan and we're working on developing a culture of learning and community the thing that our teachers and staff and everyone in chamberlain is focused on [Music] is every kid every day whatever it takes so we'll highlight each of these three quickly i'm our targeted professional development we have two clusters we have a k2 cluster and a fourth grade cluster they both mean on wednesdays our k2 cluster is directly connected to our responsive data plan that we've created we're focused on the science of reading instruction it helps train our teachers how to analyze identify and react to student needs and it provides us an opportunity to
provide consistent collaboration and follow-up support we'll also have the opportunity to go through foundations training this year which will greatly support those foundational skills our third and fourth grade teachers are going through reading comprehension instruction once again it ties directly to our responsive data plan there's also a fluid connection to our standards and curriculum resources that allows us to target our priority standards as well and we continue to utilize data analysis and intervention for our students there is a picture of some of our staff collaborating and sharing in their learning one of the things i've been very impressed with this year is just how much they have committed to this learning and really focused on that reading achievement our second stage is really developing a responsive assessment plan our goal this year once again is
for us to achieve that 80 percent time so as you see here this data what we started with is focusing on specific priority standards and foundational skills this is an example of second grade so i'm going to highlight those foundational skills at the beginning of our time we started working in assessing on diagraps you'll see that our initial percent of mastery was 33 we provided consistent and targeted intervention remediation and extension for our students and through two weeks of structured time and work we increased that to 85 of our students those remaining 15 are consistently monitored remediated and provided extension activities consistently and they will get to that hundred percent believe sounds is the second area that we focused on so far we started at 31 this took us a little bit longer or three
weeks but we're now at that 81 and we're moving into suffixes this has allowed us to target specific reading foundational skills and standards we've been able to identify interventions and remediation activities and close those gaps to master those standards we are committed to improving those student outcomes this picture here is our second grade team who did that work they are collaborating and making those remediation activities that allows us to utilize our mtss system to target those specific skills which we'll see our interventions teachers working on them here and then our classroom teachers to provide that tier 2 intervention in small group instruction our final area is to really develop a culture of learning and community my personal goal this year was to develop a shared commitment to learning for all of our building we want
to do that through our five habits of scholarship which we believe those habits will allow our students to be successful not only at chamberlain but as they move into the intermediate school in junior high those are integrity courage craftsmanship grid and compassion and each month we highlight one of those and help build and develop those skills to make our students more prepared for the learning so one of the things that we decided to do this year was really make promises to ourselves that no matter what we were going to do everything it took to make sure our kids succeeded so we started the year by being myself making a promise to my staff and if you look at that last sentence it says i am committed to every kid every day whatever it takes from
there my staff made a promise to each other and they too made that same promise about it from there we took that directly to the classroom where our teachers made promises to their students they want to make sure that they have a safe opportunity to learn every day so our staff members made those promises as well and finally we took that to our students who made their promises to each other what you'll see here is each of them signing and this is a group of students who made this promise to make sure that they were able to keep learning at the forefront in their achievement as their number one priority this is one example here's another three office work this is our students they are making that promise to each other um so basically what
we're telling you right now is we've made that promise to commit to every kid every day whatever it takes i'd like to take this time to thank my staff for their commitment and their energy towards us they have adopted this and as you can see it's throughout our building any questions from the board will you run away all right we appreciate all the effort you're putting in uh these are great commitments that you're setting an example from the top down and it built your stewards for all the students thank you guys couldn't do it without my teachers and the support of you guys and our administration team thank you very much we will move on to board committee reports um mr nonstinger is absent tvs with mr elizale so we'll start with athletic council um
our next scheduled meeting is on the 18th but uh the house is uh continuing nicely they are shingling currently so hopefully we'll get it right in for this weekend weather when it gets nasty inside so it's coming along well a 3.5 do we have a child care update okay uh 3.6 goshen community schools foundation we have a meeting in the morning i understand i was not on the trivia team but i understand truly team boss but it wasn't because i wasn't on it because i'm not a good trivial player i understand that you might have cheated on some points there at the end [Laughter] we did all right going in the final we were only two behind he was all right we had a good showing okay can we recognize you at the podium no
we don't need to uh okay uh nothing um much to report i've written a couple emails to our senator and our representative trying to ask our vouchers may be going next year that expansion id but i don't have any answers thank you and 3.8 goes from redevelopment uh we actually meet tomorrow but there's continued discussion about some ongoing uh housing projects within the city limits built to help families move to the ocean uh we'll move on to item four which is consent agenda items in item point 4.1 approval of checks number 39982-40166 and eft's number 4828-4830 and 1932-2044 item 4.2 sx updated mileage 4.3 obsolete materials 4.4 gifts and donations and 4.5 personnel anything you'd like to highlight in that bundle of items on the personal report first i'd like to congratulate trudy hall who
is retiring from community schools after 29 and a half years all of that in class we have a requirements as well jamie layman who's retiring after 26 and a half years she is the counseling officer judy miller energy education specialist who is retiring after 15 a lot of great knowledge it's hard to replace all that a lot of great individuals a lot of great support they have in the ocean for a long time and with that the consent ninja items are approved as presented move on to item 5 action items 5.1 resolution transfer of 2021 budget appropriations so we'd like to ask for your consideration of resolution transfer budget appropriations these are intra fund transfers as we get ready to close out the end of the year so there would be transfers within the education
done within the operations fund etc these are common uh procedures that happen at the end of school i would i'd like to also input that i will give you a list of all of the transfers after they've happened uh with that do we have a motion and a second for item 5.1 please i had a 5.2 resolution authority to reduce appropriations this is another routine resolution that happens each november or december you may remember as we adopted our budget that we advertised high so that we can protect ourselves we expect our budget to come back with our 1782 notice dictating that we reduce some of our expenditures to keep our tax rates level so when we get that notice that we require the board's authority to let me reduce some of our expenditures in that
budget to meet those tax rates we have a motion and a second for item 5.2 please i'll move approval again a second move to second additional comments questions from the board hearing none of those in favor please say aye all right passes 5-0 at a 5.3 grand canyon university dr hope the board members you may recall last time we had a superintendent's report um if it works this could be a great pipeline for bringing youtubers into the ocean if it doesn't work i recommend it see how it goes we have a motion and a second for item 5.3 okay move the second comments or questions from the board so they will help with financial aid or they'll help secure financial aid for individuals thank you and we'll move on to item six uh discussion items
and 6.1 2022 2023 school calendar all right we are here actually we are behind uh we usually are two years ahead when we did this when we approved the school calendar coped kind of threw us all off last year we also wanted to survey our parents and our staff which we did through parents square and what we found is that a lot of changes so um basically i'm i have you have in front of you uh i look at the school calendar for the year 2022-23 with august 5th being the first student day um the last student day is may 25th um one of the reasons we do people say why do you always start so early part of it is is our commitment to having first semester done especially at the high school for
students with finals before christmas so that means we you know um state likes us to have an even distribution of days 90 and 90 to make that 180. we can flex a little bit but when you get too lopsided they kind of frown on that so first semester we'll actually have 87 days in it and 93 seconds semester other than that really it's the only other thing that's odd is that instead of coming back january 2nd we will come back on january 3rd because new year's day is on sunday and so when new year's day is on a sunday the official holiday is the monday after it's on a saturday it's the friday before so students will actually students and staff will come back in june on january 3rd are there any questions i have
questions i always have questions for you guys being a parent i mean i see we're starting on a friday we are i i'd say that's the thing that most parents struggle with is to end you know you're ending a week with the first day of school one of the reasons one of the reasons we did look at that is we started on monday this year and we don't have any opportunity to fix transportation issues before the next day of school so having one or two days of school and then a break gives us the opportunity hopefully we won't have to fix transportation issues but um address any issues that come up in the transportation that is one of those things that this year was hard so the other question i have and i can't remember
from the survey so sure um with how the holidays fall around christmas and new year's was there the consideration to you know split weeks yeah is it it's a long week before the holiday to be honest it is a long week before holiday um really it was uh it was like 43 saying two full weeks because there's an extra weekend in there then there was like 40 percent that said i don't care and then there was that other 20 that said split weeks so really um what we came up with the survey when we look at we look at that in the future is that people are yeah it's it's really based on personal preference but we feel like we we have the ability then to to uh do those flexing pieces which some people
like some people don't like we also you know i know one of the things we asked parents about the split week and the parents survey it ran pretty much right along the lines of teachers about that 40 40 and 38 and then 22 saying you know split leagues are good we were worried about split weeks when it came to child care because there are often times child care providers require you to pay for the entire week whether you use it or not so taking all that into consideration we feel like in the future we can do what we feel is best for the school for the school system when it comes because again going that split week would kick back that start date a couple days so there is yeah that that's what i was
kind of playing with is if you adjusted a few things you would have a pretty even semester yeah yeah you would the court members have other questions or concerns please let us know uh we expect to bring this back in december as an actor i always have to ask you questions you expected something i appreciate it i appreciate it all right we will move on to item seven which is public comment uh so we ask people to please sign in at the beginning of the meeting uh miss falls we'll hold our time we ask you to hold it to three minutes please and we will start with linda hartman good evening everybody back from a forum trip and so we're almost halfway through the school year it's awesome um we're going to start out by
just asking a question did you hear that that was a sonic boom shot across the bottom last tuesday connor defeated its referendum why because the board was told to live within the budget and i think everybody in the whole county is going this direction terry mccullough lost his bid for governor why because he said parents do not have a right to be concerned with what the schools are teaching thus directly with parental rights that will make parents angry one of the reasons i come to the board meetings on one is to talk to people one-on-one and see what they know about issues that they're voting on in our recent discussion discussions with seo apparent it is apparent that there is very small knowledge base and if you have questions about that come and talk to
me because i've got some things that we can discuss my husband approached one board member in august and when a question on sel was told i trust ocean community schools to make the best decisions for its students really i thought i'd miss her so i went back and i listened to it again yup that's what he said in september at the conclusion of the meeting when the board was asked for comments the same number ran it out if i had a vote i would have well sir you do have a vote you relinquish it to the superintendent my question to the wrestling board is this and i know that you guys run for board because you want to help students i know that you don't make hardly anything doing this i know that and i
appreciate the service that you give but have you relinquished your vote to the superintendent he works for you you don't work for him so i'm going to appeal through your ethics and your morality to stand up for what's right even if you have to stand alone and standing alone is not uncomfortable so these things are non-negotiable we will not have our kids sexualized at grocery community schools we're not having we will not allow pornography in ocean community school libraries we will not allow our kids to have seo ran down their throats so that we can reimagine education we want our kids to be able to read and i love that that principle that came up here and tonight and shared that 36 reading proficiency is a dismal failure stop using our kids for a social
experiment you'll need you'll either heed warning or you'll be sitting here on the chairs that we're paying for looking at each other and wonder what happened we teach common denominators math we have a common ending it's our kids if we take that denominator away you're left with nothing are you going to continue to put on this slipper slope are you going to allow parents to decide what curriculum will be taught to their kids they hold the future of public education it was started with limit with an idea and it will end with an idea the choice is yours stand up to the superintendent you're his boss he's not yours and when i come to these meetings i can see him written on your face everything passes 6-0 six zero come on you know there's dissent
but we're humans just do what's right for kids thanks thank you rob rader good evening rob rader knight away south 10th street uh following up with just a little bit that linda said with my previous comments i have a large concern too about the sexual integrity of our students they're already faced with a lot from the outside world and i want to make sure that the school treats them uh properly i have a little uh webpage that i that i subscribe to it sends out daily reminders how to be a better husband better father i look at it and see all the ways that i failed seriously though it says uh said one and i thought it was appropriate five ways porn hurts our sons and daughters the average age of a child encounters porn
for the first time is between nine and eleven and mainstream porn continues to get more extreme violent and degrading the internet and smartphones have opened the door for porn to invade our kids lives hearts and minds and the consequences are devastating here are five ways number one it sexualizes our kids the term teen was the top three searched words on porn sites for years one year it was number one that should make us all sick we were talking about kids this means a majority of people looking at a porn on the internet wanted to watch kids from porn sites porn site visits outnumber amazon netflix and twitter combined think about how many people are looking to watch kids have sex how many child predators are being fueled in them and emboldened two our kids lose
their innocence the culture surrounding porn is reinforcing the idea that kids can be sex objects we i can talk ad nauseam on number two number three they experience shame guilt and depression what happens next is tweens and teens play at being sexy they quickly believe the lie that the best place to learn about how to be sexual is through internet porn which is easily accessible and affordable and large quantities the images of mainstream pornography are burned in their brains forever deep down they know they've seen something they shouldn't have seen but their brains can't make sense of it they're excited and embarrassed but they don't know why they feel ashamed and guilty but too scared to talk to anyone for fear of being in trouble number four they develop an addiction to it the brain
releases large amounts of dopamine which gives a feeling of pleasure in its reward center this gives the this gives the user the urge to come back again and form a connection with the image this causes an addiction and the younger they are when they are introduced to it the more powerfully ingrained it is since this feeling of euphoria helps them to forget about their problems momentarily form becomes an unhealthy coping mechanism to distract them from the feelings of shame guilt and stress number five it continues it fuels disconnection and disrespect ultimately porn leads to relational disconnection and degradation from it kids draw expectations of sex with what sex will be like either where goshen high school like president weddle says outstanding or we're just another government institution i heard this on all in all we're
just uh another brick in the wall i urge you to look out for our kids especially being sexually exploited by our curriculum and thank you mr raider terry hartman [Music] i'm a member of a local grassroots organization that was formed last spring called ocean concerned citizens we have a facebook group comprised of over 326 members as of today i'm an administrator for the group and i approve a new member nearly every day we also have a new website i want to address the board on the issue of transparency our group has filed a number of freedom of information act requests lack of transparency in school system leads to disinformation and falsehoods for example an email from a goshen community schools teacher found in the in the foyers marilyn torres dated june 13th of this year
says ocean community schools created the equity and inclusion council this year i am a member of the council and happy to say we have the support of the school board and central office unfortunately they are hearing negative comments from community members who question its purpose and equate it to critical race theory which is being vilified on fox news if i am understanding them correctly their fear is their resources will be taken away from white students and given to students of color and portland from some of the other documents i read between interoffice communications and school board meetings i know that the school board members are concerned about what the community thinks and uh and they're concerned that the we don't know we don't know what seo is but apparently you got to do about it
or thank you um there's a way to fix all that more transparency so i'm asking i'm asking the board today to do three things almost all sel materials used by the school system on the school website number two make the names of all textbooks and other materials used by our teachers on the school website number three provide access to all training materials for teachers administrators and school counselors on the school website i'm asking that the vote be provided no later than november 30th this year and that the above information be updated monthly on the school website if the board chooses to continue to hide its seo agenda our group will continue to file freedom of information acts and we will get the information and we will post it ourselves on our facebook group and our
website so transparency if uh if seo is a good thing put it out there let people read what's going on philip crawford i'm just going to read something real quick and then i'll get rid of what i want to say it's from the bible a real popular book in public places these days but um so you know there is no separation of church and state trying to find that constitution for anybody who wants to question that but it says hero israel the lord our god is one lord and i shall love the lord thy heart all that soul of all thy might and these words thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children and shall talk with them when thou sittest in my house when i walk is by the way when the lies down
when they'll rise up as i find them or sign upon mine am and they shall be as frontlets between nine islands and thou shalt light them on the host of thy house so basically what god is commanding the children of israel in this passage to do is to raise up a generation that honors god and does not forget that god is the one lord of all creation and unfortunately in our culture society in our public schools we decided to uh attempt to get rid of god in all aspects which is hard watch obash again as i said before because you know without god we can't properly navigate what a society cannot properly navigate without god and the bible our founders knew this george washington said it's impossible to properly govern our nation without god and
the bible because it gives us the foundational truths that we need and so god the grid all things give parents the right to train their kids his ways and to instruct them and unfortunately oh man if you look at our government that says parents no longer should have the right try to tell parents they're domestic terrorists and whatnot for showing up at board meetings like myself oh it's nonsense parents got the right to choose whether the kids wear masks take vaccines learn certain curriculums it's not the school board and uh really this is not a shot at the school board i'm really more ticked off at our governor and our government trying to find parents we're trying to put school boards uh under pressure and find them if they don't abide by certain [ __ ] rules
guys parents have the rights you guys you guys have the rights not the secret thing that's been mentioned guys we were hired to do the job not just sit there just go through the motions raise your hand say hi we can make a difference make that difference today god bless you thank you i have a story to share right tori ken can boom and i quote her so the line had stuck in my head this is cory speaking sex i was pretty sure what it meant whether you were a boy or a girl and sin made tantayans very angry but what the two together meant i couldn't imagine and so seated next to father in the train compartment i suddenly asked father what is sex sin he turned to look at me as he always
did when answering a question but to my surprise he said nothing at last he stood up lifted his traveling case from the ramp over our heads and he said it on the floor will you carry it off the train corey he asked i stood up and took it it was crammed with watches and spare parts he had purchased that morning it's too heavy i said yes he said and i would be a pretty poor father if i ask this little girl to carry such a lowly it's the same way corey with knowledge some knowledge is too heavy for children when you are older and stronger you can bear it but for now you must trust me to carry it for you and that's from the hiding place the triumphant true story of corey kendall so
i'm asking you as the school board as our school board that our children not be allowed to carry loads that are too heavy for them we want them to to be innocent children their innocence is worth protecting and worth fighting for we need to do our part as the school board as parents as grandparents to make sure that the children do not carry things that they're not that they're not old enough to carry we must make sure they're receiving education quality quality education and not being indoctrinated thank you so much you very much that concludes uh public comment this evening we'll move on to item 8 closing items and 8.1 any miscellaneous items from the board tonight uh 8.2 any miscellaneous administrative items doctor couple of items um one our next meeting will be at
the junior high auditorium if we decide to have it somewhere [Music] oh we'll post that also um ushering in the holiday season because our next meeting will be in the summer i'd like to wish everybody and we want to hide 8.3 in german do we have a motion please tell me a second maybe you want to stay all night second move the second hole is better please say aye we are adjourned thank you
