i'd like to call this meeting order at 6 00 pm on monday july 12 2020. 21 please stand and recite the pledge of allegiance i pledge allegiance to the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all just a few opening remarks please this is a meeting of the school board and public for the purpose of conducting the school corporation's business it is not to be considered a public community meeting there will be time for public participation as indicated by agenda item number seven the mission of negotiating schools is to inspire innovation empowering potential and enriching our world and our vision ocean community schools indiana's premier louisville school district of choice item 1.4 approval of tonight's agenda do we have any
conditions or modifications to the agenda the agenda is approved as presented and item 1.5 approval of the minutes from our june 14th 2021 regular war meeting and july 7th 2021 executive session if you have any provisions to those minutes okay now the minutes are approved as presented uh we'll move on to item two which is superintendent's reports yeah the first item is 2.1 stem we have three teachers with us this evening on our first ever stem camp they're going to talk um so we're just trying to keep the stem skills and the excitement going for the students so these are all of our campers that we had um camp and we also had some excellent volunteers through the national honor society and then some of the technology student association members came and helped as well
so just a little bit of background on this stuff [Music] um we wrote that grant and a lot of that grant ties into the system six year strategic plan that indiana has with three main focuses and instruction scale evidence-based stem curriculum in classrooms and foster early stem career exposure so it was that third one that we were really trying to hone in on with the students when we wrote the grant one of the goals was to offer to this summer for those incoming grades seventh and ninth grade as we met we kind of changed that to highlighters as doing all three grades and as a collect experience for so here are the numbers that we had for our stem camp this year um just to make it a manageable member for three of his teachers
so in fifth grade we had 18 students that attended retirement 7th grade had 20 students 9th grade a little disappointed in the numbers um always had six students but then i found out that our scheduling was the same time as some pe and they get a credit for that so definitely understand why that won out over stone camp so that's definitely something that we'll be looking at in the future so we can increase those members so what exactly did we do during this video [Music] um one nice thing about it being a very small group was it was one group and they were all able to work together to get those protocols together the second day we got into some civil engineering they were going to do some drawing which they the next furniture so
they were split into smaller groups that day and they decided they wanted some girls these guys and the girls was very pretty and functional because they just wanted it you know functional so that was fun just to kind of see those different things and we were able to talk about those differences too why why did this group do it this way so they did some cardboard furniture and the last day was experiment so those were always a good regardless is is you are given a simple task and it's how many steps can you make it happen i'm sure you've probably seen the cartoons where um and that's how the by making these cartoons of you know just making most in the morning well he would have contractions going all through the house one step after
another where the end result was make the toast so they had to use all six simple machines which is a huge component for goldberg machines and it had to have a minimum of 10 steps and they had to place a ping pong ball into a cup so simple enough but when you break it down into ten steps and using all six simple machines it it's pretty complicated so i'm just going to hand out to you some of the things fifth and sixth graders so from seventh graders we started out talking about problem solving and teamwork as well on that first day we did some simple engineering challenges uh building cup towers without touching the cubs and uh paper tables the second day we went into talking about algorithms and we used ogobots for that which
meant but they are little tiny robots that either follow color codes which are what they're doing on the right picture um or very simple coding with that so that was kind of an intro to coding on that second day um the third day we talked about currents and circuits so they got to test out different things that different conductors and insulators and then we use the makey makey to build a video game so they got a little deeper into coding and then that attaches so you use controllers outside of the computer for your game um and then the final day they were actually able to explore an area that they were a little bit more interested in so i had an engineering component for air racers um an ozobot battle that they could do or
they could continue working on their video game which is effective a little bit more so they were kind of all over the place with that which is um so when parents came in they got to see a little bit of everything that we did and so those boards that we handed out those all require kids to be able to understand what a conductor is so then they have to be able to connect those to the computer and then basically say this is what's going to happen if i do this so they use each of those boards and then um for fifth grade that was a brand new experience for them because a lot of them have never actually thought about the conductors or what works with that so we'll get the pictures up here a
little bit but yeah really the focus was on uh getting them to be able to build and work together and so each of these three pictures that are up there basically show what we do you see the laptop right here with the it's called voxels and so they are actually video game creators they take their own story they make their own game they are the designer they're the art creator they are the coder they have to have other kids play it and then take the feedback and change it up the vex kits that are on the left there on the left hand picture with the laptop those are kind of like legos and those are actually used in project either way and so that would be something that they use at gis next year in
their stem classes so that's really all this is getting them prepared for what will be opportunities later on and then on the far right that's an actual makey makey board connect to a laptop and they're performing some musical instruments but you see them all touching each other and this is the moment where they realize that they are all conductors and that when one person touches someone else they can actually complete the circuit and so it was a pretty interesting experience for them and so we'll have these things that you see in front of you will actually be at gis next year next year this year four months they'll have that experience but uh we were talking a little bit about what the showcase was for the parents so parents were all able to come in
for guardians at the end of the camp on friday or thursday thursday and uh experience all the things that the kids were doing and the campers all were able to express what they did and uh there was a lot of excitement and that was what the whole camp was about was to create some excitement to showcase to them what the opportunities are later on and so we actually had some of the high school volunteers walk them through some of the different things that were available at high school with the engineering labs construction lab the 3d printers so it was a great experience thanks to the board for supporting that so thank you thank you all so there's some some of the camper reactions that we have up there um really focused on those stem skills
and a lot of the students just having them do those design challenges and pointing out this is why you're learning what you are in math and this is why your science is important for this so just so they can start seeing that everything does tie together they know you will use everything so it had a lot of good feedback from the kids i don't think there was a single time that i didn't see kids smiling and having a good time so that alone just having that positive experience for summer school was pretty cool also so here's kind of our plan um senior camp ran very smoothly huge shout out to jeremy sheets he was our administrator for the camp our camp was monday through thursday 1 30 to 4. so we had transportation arranged for
those students coming from summer school also for students that requested transportation going home jeremy figure out all those logistics for us um you know in the future we need to definitely look at scheduling conflicts because i don't want to be up against summer pe again let me get those ninth graders in so yeah we would like to see the camps expand i definitely want to get the word out early and often next year to build that excitement now that we have a group of students that have gone through it they will be our biggest promoters so and yeah just to keep that excitement going and once we get to the high school we want them selfishly with them taking those engineering classes just so they can see you know some of the other cool things
that they do also but yes thank you for your support in this and look forward to doing it thank you very much we appreciate that uh we're going to move on to item 2.2 which is accelerated learning grant dr mckay and we have a couple guests here kevin and dustin from the boys and girls club and kids care um the state put her out just to worry about uh 122 million dollars for this grant student learning recovery it's to help offset students who have achievement gaps caused by the recent pandemic and so some of the criteria for it was it could not happen within it had to be different from once normally done and happened outside the school day is what they really wanted um so when we brainstormed um as a group we brought
we talked to kevin we talked to dustin about what when could we get kids and what keeps kids from coming to some of our after school tutoring programs and one of the main things that came up was child care it's hard for a parent to wait an hour after school sometimes to come and get their kid that transportation to and from and so when thinking about that what we wanted to do is we wanted to be able to provide child care for that which offered us an opportunity because kids care in the boys and girls club are two places where our kids go um kids care at chandler is our only site we've talked about we've had interest from people on the west side of town people on the south side of town about having
some kind of after-school care for them and so this grant is written that you would actually pay for child care for these students after school and so we're pleased to announce we were awarded right around 750 000 for two years which allows us to have 180 of our students receive child care and tutoring it also pays for tutoring during that time so we're thrilled to be able to have received this i have kevin here and dustin from kidscare um our partnership with boys and girls club and united way um is just something that we are thrilled with i'm just really pleased to partner with you guys good evening i also brought with me vice president julie clark who is somewhere back there which is back in the stream justin he's our air director for for
kids here so it's been 28 years our partnership we are delighted to partner with you we have been partners from the beginning so in 1994 when i arrived we were just one club now we're growing with boys and customers of alberta county uh our number one partnerships with our schools particularly the ocean schools so that is our long-term running also on top of my day job i'm also your eighth grade football coach so so we love the collaboration program and our ocean students you know coming off a cool bit it's going to take all of us to recover and it's going to be one student at a time and it's not going to be easy we're going to have to be focused and dedicated our partnership with the schools is really important because we're going
to be able to target these families picked by the principals and school teachers to say here are the kids that have the largest gap and we're going to be able to focus on the elementary school children that need us the most i'm going to inspire them to also close that educational gap i remember when i was in third grade and i had a teacher who sat me down so you're going to learn how to do addition and subtraction because multiplication next year and you're going to have to learn this i didn't have any gap closer except for teachers so we get to play that role with you we have been host to your alternative programs ocean online academy our transportation program we're so grateful for so grateful for everything that we do we are in
this together and we're in this way it is not going to be easy but we are dedicated we have 180 children located both at our that are coming because of this brand that we're going to be able to focus and close the gap and that's a lot of kids so we're really grateful for that partnership and thank you very much for that partnership everything that georgia community schools has meant to us any questions you have for me at all we appreciate the partnership and we look forward to many more years ahead of that thank you okay thank you thank you very much any questions about the actual brand the additional sites that we're adding kids care is waterproof and models so we'll have some on the west side on the south side thank you all
right we'll move on to agenda item number three which is board committee reports and 3.1 parts department uh we have a meeting next week so not much to report uh other than i know that the um kids triathlon was a huge success again after a year off that happened this past saturday and it's always a highlight just hundreds of of area kids are involved in that and staff does a great job of that so great work by our park department thank you uh 3.2 music council uh we're not meeting so no report 3.3 athletic council uh mr garber is not with us this evening 3.4 building trades um the building trades program has purchased a lot for construction next year it is again out in the uh kind of clover trails neighborhood uh where the
home was last year so they will begin planning uh it'll be a spec house again and moving forward here in a few weeks uh 3.5 child care 3.6 goshen community schools foundation uh we meet in mourning um continuation of the things we've been doing in the past uh 3.78 legislation updates it's a slow time for legislation but we did several of us met with senator dario a little bit ago and we appreciate his willingness to meet with school officials and and what you can do for education so other than that and 3.8 ocean redevelopment we have a meeting tomorrow so they'll report this moving on item 4 consent agenda items 4.1 checks number 39052-39208 one 1416-1419 six zero three five seven three six zero three six eight three zero six three five six through three
zero six five three seven and eft's number four seven nine two three four seven nine six six and 543-927-544-8233 4.2 johnson control hbac service agreement 4.3 7055 p1 state road 119 acquisition 4.4 gifts and donations 4.5 liability insurance and 4.6 personnel any comments or corrections to the consent agenda items retirements tonight that's good uh hearing on the consent agenda items are approved as presented uh there are no action items this evening so we will go forward to discussion items and 6.1 student handbook okay um at the last board meeting there was a superintendent's report concerning the element elementary handbooks now go k through six um to include the intermediate school um the changes um were there were strike threes and read and the changes were in red no real major changes tweaks to the dress
code on the addition of ghost intermediate school the new curriculum material and rental fees and then the daily schedule and how to how parents can find out if there's a delay or cancellation of school we don't not as many people use the television radio as they used to and so we've started making sure they're aware of our social media and our parents where how we communicate it's schreiner for the secondary um so no major changes to that handbook um for the junior high or the high school except for the dress code and that chance to look at that and just recommendations for teachers and just encouragement of how they respond to students and violations of the dress questions for us if board members have any questions please let me know thank you both very much
and we will move on to item seven which is public comment uh just a quick um thing i would like to read although we are not required to hold public comment as the board of school trustees we appreciate community support and we are glad to hear from community members the goshen community schools school board of trustees is by def by definition an apolitical body when people choose to speak during the board meetings we ask that they keep the following in mind those wishing to address the board for public comment we ask that you please do register before the meeting since we have not made that announcement before tonight we will let people speak if they have not registered public participation is permitted at the discretion of the presiding officer and should last no more than
three minutes all statements should be directed to the presiding officer no speakers should address or question board members individually the board and individual board members will not engage in dialogue yet may ask clarifying questions all speakers must refrain from calling out or harassing individual board members staff members or students each speaker must state their full name and home address clearly and slowly so that it can be understood and recorded in the minutes if the speaker is affiliated with a group or organization naming the affiliation is also appreciated the speaker should mention the subject that they wish to address at the discretion of the presiding officer that these guidelines are not hereto speakers may be asked to terminate their statement or leave the premises the content of the statement is taken from board policy zero one
six zero which may be found in its entirety on the goshen community school's website so we do have a few people that have signed in so what i will do i will call you to the front if you wish to speak like i said if you did not sign in this evening we will allow uh comments but we will ask future meetings to everyone please do register and we will be timing it this evening uh so first uh linda hartman would you like to speak please hello everybody um dr pope my husband and i uh met with dr pope and to discuss our certain concerns of the equity including councilman thank you for listening to us number one yes and i appreciate you changing the language that was on the gcs website and on the
narrative nearing the focus of the council to a 2.2 to remove and i really appreciate that when i looked at you i said yes i i see your eyes you care what happens with kids and i really appreciate that i apologize um so but our task is far from over and this is part of our discussion as well we still have a 36 percent reading proficiency problem and our preparation still falls in the bottom half of schools and nobody in this room wants that we all want to fix that so i recommend that instead of getting consultants we learn to think for ourselves hire a volunteer coordinator gets the seniors in the community to come in and help kids read that that's so important to me my my minor is reading like i i hurt
yeah that's my heart there are plethora of things that could be done to raise reading rates we're handicapping kids to a life where they can't where if they can't read they can't learn to think for themselves and rather than they'll be taught what to think and that is frightening to me i don't ever want our kids to be there neither the superintendent or the board can relegate the responsibility put their shoulders up on a council although a council will have input you folks are the responsible parties that's why we elected you my mom and dad taught me to give everyone the benefit of the doubt until people prove otherwise and i'm giving you guys all the benefit of the doubt he took an old to do what's right in the best interest of kids some
of you might be doing what's popular and that's what's right get some courage and do what's right and i feel a little bit like a david goliath i'm only five two but that's okay it's a hill i'm willing to die in and save kids who can't speak for themselves i have five grandkids one black two brown two white corbin and virginia live in the waterford district but their parents are sending them to a public school because they don't trust skillshare community schools and that hurts me because i used to work for you guys don't poke the mama bears when you do you got a huge fight on your hands and i stand for all those kids you don't have a mom or grandma so if you can't or won't do what's right it's time to
get off the board and get off the bus and allow people to put kids first on here our kids can't read if that doesn't shake you to your core you're in the wrong place at the wrong time can we afford to lose another couple hundred kids to private schools do social experiments thank you thank you mrs hartman thank you very much uh next is uh terry hartman um last june 21st my wife and friend attended the south bay community school corporation board meeting and uh i just see some alarming trends around our area and that affect all the schools and i don't think we need to make any mistake that what happens in other local schools doesn't directly affect our own schools by influence and trends and some people want to correct things that other
schools think they're solving um on on that school board meeting there's a lady named dr tessa sutton jesus assistant superintendent of equity diversity and inclusion and student services i mean south bend community schools and uh many of you want to see that it's on youtube that again that happened june 21st she talked about working with the principals there and she's training them and this is direct quotes of her some of it may sound a little it's out of context it may sound a little awkward and and she took referring to them the principles took him through a book called coaching for equity and then what was really nice about this was they had an opportunity to collaborate to collaborate amongst one another they participated in terms of focusing on unlearning whiteness so to speak based
on white supremacy particularly current education system that kind of i would say is something the lines of making whiteness visible and the book she's trained from is this book here coaching for equity and she's training the principals in south bend schools again um just a couple of folks in the book just to show you what this book is all about page 85 is a quote you are either racist or you're anti-racist you're either upholding white supremacy or you're actively participating in taking it apart another quote from page 77 beyond a professional commitment we all need to learn more about white supremacy and racism whether because we are committed to leading an equitable organizations or to heal from the damage of white supremacy and again i know a lot of you're thinking this isn't south bend
schools and i don't know what direction the board's going to go in the future i know that again after talking to dr hope i don't believe he wants to go in that direction but i i just want to caution the board if you ever think of of going down the direction of teaching divisive racist topics that uh there's a lot of us watching you have a lot more people watching you now that you have this time last year right here thank you thank you very much uh next is uh robert all right well good evening i'm rob rager i live at 908 south 10th street here on ocean my wife and i sarah we've owned our home for over 30 years and raised five children that's pertinent because we were homeschoolers i say i say
that now that my children my youngest is 19 my oldest is 31 i'm an old guy i say that not as an indictment against public education or against the board but because i'm privileged a privilege because my my children get to grow up with with one father and one mother and one home and and they were taught by the person that knows them their best their mother and not everybody is able to do that and so i'm privileged i can hear my kids laughing out loud when i say i'm privileged because i've ranked about that kremlin sidewalk at least for 25 years and and it's not easy the sacrifices that we made to do that but my children have turned out great i remember selling the lawnmower by a dog down clarinet you know that's
the sacrifices that you make so i i can say that i'm privileged but i don't want somebody else to tell me that i'm privileged and so i'm here because i'm i'm i'm fearful to the core of this critical race theory now i had a real nice meeting with with dr hope with mr weddle and miss schreiner um and they treated sarah and i very nice and and i hope it's okay that i can say uh they invited me to be on their their committee it used to be the equity and inclusion committee and i'm thrilled i'm just thrilled they've done in the meantime they've done a nice job of of taking away things that might seem confrontational or to stroke that that nerve that it is so fearful uh and and it looks nice and
i'm i'm very excited to be able to participate in this committee um there's a lot i could say about critical race theory but let's just see where this plays out uh i had a teacher a principal tell me to my face uh when we were discussing parents she said um in paraparental situations like this that we were discussing she says that parents think they know what's best for the kid but really we do boy oh boy that just really puts fear in a guy's heart you know he's trying to run under the radar to raise his family to be virtuous people and his big brother going to come and knock on the door and take them away well they're all they're all bigger than i am now my son is six six and he shows
me every time um so um i'm anxious uh anxious excited for the opportunity and i thank you for your hospitality at that meeting and and i look forward to to whatever comes from this so that we don't have hatred hatred for our country so we we don't hate our families with children uh thinking that they're inferior because maybe their their parents are different colors or that that they can recognize god that all these things are critical race uh things uh it seems to be against uh so uh i thank you and thanks for letting me speak thank you very much thank you mr reader peggy garcia hi um thank you for letting me speak and um i want to give a disclaimer here i'm going to call this a rant so that if anybody thinks
that that at the end because i'm pretty passionate about this subject and i have been for most of my all my adult life um and i call this the fight against critical race theory and that's been raised a couple of times already i'm peggy garcia i live at 803 north 23rd street right next to the pumpkin vine trail and i enjoy it out there i taught kindergarten at model half days for two years and then i taught at chamberlain for 17 years before retiring in 2010 and all four of my wonderful bright grandchildren attend ocean schools and i must say my husband also taught tech ocean from um i will begin with some quotes from just a few of the many black conservatives whose voices are rarely if ever put forward as experts when the
mainstream press or other groups address racial issues this quote critical race theory preserves a racist way of thinking that undermines civil rights constitutionally guaranteed equal protection before the law and u.s institutions at large as a black man i grew up in the gym from south i firmly believe it's time to move past this sort of pointless division that's a quote from us congressman and former professional football player burgess ellis then there's candace owens and she's somewhat controversial but um she's the author and founder of blexit which is black exit from the democrat party and she she said in response to joe biden declaring juneteenth national holiday quote june she quoted him first juneteenth is a day in which we remember the moral stain and terrible toll that slavery took on the country and continues to
take joe biden declared and she says doesn't that make you want to celebrate we're just going to look back and ponder the moral stain and terrible toll of slavery on juneteenth we can all get together and think about how awful america has been to black people and that my friends is the point that is always the point the idea is to keep us eternally angry the idea of course is perpetual revolution at its core juneteenth just like critical race theory of the new york times cynical and flawed project is a part of a concerted effort from the democrats to use black americans as pawns and i've often seen that as a agenda in the past there's never going to be a fix whether it's reparations whether it's a holiday they're always going to say that
this is just the beginning there's more work that needs to be done and a quote and a case in point for us is the perpetual calls for ocean citizens to pretend for the sundown laws that most people who came to our town never knew existed they certainly didn't participate in its enactment or enforcement can we inform people as they existed of course but we must rejoice that the laws were ended not continually beat the drug of shame the drum of shame for our racist past i'm sorry that three minutes is up and even passed sorry okay well i have a list of black conservatives that i think have to be included in any race race relations curriculum or uh considerations as we thank you thank you very much janet waldowski and um i am also
a member of the human race which is includes all shades of brown we talked about that last night some of you may remember i'm just happy to be a little paler version i do live in motion and i record my address on the forums um i was i was struck in learning more about the critical race theory um sel which is social emotional learning and uh dei which is diversity equity inclusion and i know that the verbiage has been changed our website as far as the council i know that at the national level the nea that different organizations are taking things off their website so that we are less informed about what they're doing so in fact the verbiage was changed i talked to someone i tend to be an optimist but in this case
i was a little bit concerned that possibly it was not for the altruistic goals that i would hope that maybe you've given up on some of these things but how do we help our kids um a 40 48 math proficiency the people that talked earlier i'm disappointed that they left because as linda mentioned 36 proficiency in reading prisons are built on a second grade reading level did you know that if they don't have proficiency reading how do we inspire potential i'm just i'm just concerned um if 94 that means 94 of our kids don't graduate with a reading deficiency what will they do after graduation we do have the rv industry some consider that slave labor hour and it's dependent on economy i counted up how many of my teachers were white christian men those
are the targets of a lot of this sel dei training because the goal isn't really to increase equality or emotional learning as it would seem the goal is to change the way we think about our country about each other and the council the equity council could be responsible for increasing division in our community grooming the kids for sex trafficking sex trafficking and sexual activity one other thing in the 1990s i'm a nurse in the 1990s we had this big push for pain control and i'm all about pain control i want my patients to be comfortable but we had such a push for pain control every hour to evaluate every four hours at the minimum we still have a lot of those guidelines but come to find out big pharma was behind all that education for
us it wasn't an altruistic goal to have people have less pain big pharma wanted to sell more medication and would you know that big pharma is behind this as well lily grave grant a big grant we use we as a corporation accepted 675 from lilly and from the gates foundation but also big pharma is involved now the surveys i'm sorry i'm sorry your time is up okay so quickly thank you the surveys that seo are giving out that the kids take that they're judged by affect graduation affect jobs after graduation and also affect big pharma giving milk pills and diagnoses so i just really hope that the 63 percent of people nationwide that are against this that the 55th percent of the news next americans do not think this is good for our kids that
you guys will consider that greatly thank you thank you i would like to remind please address us uh do not address the audience uh next uh lori arnold you can't hear very good thank you okay i'm going to read this um last year the homeschooling rates quadrupled in this country the longer you keep dividing people by race the less students will remain in public schools and you may not have a school life what parents need to understand is that massive amounts of data is being collected on your children without your knowledge or consent your child's values attitudes behaviors and beliefs will conform to the communist agenda or else how can we assure that students can get the education they need without putting them into skin color camps how can we give the students a hand
up such as providing additional esl personnel and volunteer support or allowing the teachers to learn about each student and to submit requests for resources for those particular students it makes no sense to me that we have kids reading at a 36 rate how will they become employable citizens and be successful how many students can we lose to private and homeschooling i have been in the community and talked with parents they are fed up with their kids being used as social experiments school board you are the people responsible for the decisions you make you cannot throw them off on any other committee history will remember you do the right thing and fix our reading and math rates we do not want to be in the bottom 50 of the schools in indiana thank you for your
time that was written i have one more thing i'd like to say uh real quickly along the lines of sexual stuff it just disgraces me that in the city of goshen we have youth drag queen show and party down at shanklin park on saturday that is disgusting thank you john hunt when my children went to concord west side schools i just want to share with you all that i just learned about the social emotional learning didn't like what i saw at all my children read were able to read before i realized they could read because i read to them every night that every child has that advantage i get that i think i ran a halfway house it was rather important they would bring bring me children of all backgrounds all colors um i don't
appreciate the divisiveness the divisiveness of like it feels like i remember when we were supposed to try and get children and not see color well now they do and now you're telling them that they have to start seeing color that's a good that's a really great recipe for a disaster if you really want to help your children learn to read you should utilize for volunteers my mother volunteered in the 70s in a reading readiness program and the bullies in the school didn't pick on my twin brothers because they loved my mother because she actually taught them to read undivided attention in the hallway outside the class on a consistent basis and some decent material that's what they needed if you really want to solve the reading readiness and make some differences in your racial relationship
as well that's what you should probably start with sitting over there she doesn't want to have children she never you um barbara botox thank you if you were hungry you would say put luck hi everybody my name is the indiana parents bill of rights page four states indiana mandatory curriculum is to include morals and good citizenship instruction aimed at promoting honesty morality respect for others respect for authority obedience to the law respect for the national flag thank you for how we opened the meeting tonight and and the constitution and lessons that tend to promote and develop an upright and desirable citizen's citizenry unquote but castle which is collaborative for academic social and emotional learning provides sel which is social emotional learning ideologies for goshen and that blatant blatantly contradicts this code here's one example the
tree symbol used in sel teaches connection critical thinking insight mindset etc these sound good but it's a ruse to educate the whole child they use the oppressor or victim ideology and more sel uses propaganda self-criticism finger-pointing isolation repetitive phrases music us versus them rhetoric which causes division and love bonding the goal is to shift the mindset of the children and the culture i fully support our teachers but i strongly oppose all sel and materials that align with crt as it does not comply with the indiana code instead it steals the identities of our children castle competencies are manipulative subversive deceitful and destructive we will not allow our children to be abused and children we will not allow our children in devotion to be abused in this manner now is your opportunity to examine castle's real
agenda and forever vanquish it from motion schools please stop endorsing and enforcing castle stop experimenting with our children thank you for your time and for sincerely listening to my concerns thank you uh tanya hunt no problem uh dave miller i need to make this fun and clear i'm not the nice guy i have three very hard questions for each of you tonight how why and when how did you fail so measurably because everything i've heard tonight is one failure after another we need more money because of pandemics yeah things happen okay you failed you either failed to plan or you failed to acknowledge that there was a risk either way it boils down to everyone who sits in front of me failed my next question is how how do you plan on fixing this problem
i've heard of you know we're going to do critical race theory that's a great step point one of the great tragedy of critical race theory is it was taught by the nazis in 1939 as well shortly before they moved jewish children out of public schools and private institutions into the ghetto scholarships because hey you're not worth the effort that is what i've heard from your critical race through darker my next question is again how how did you get so far from where we began you can call this whatever you want you can call it social justice learning you call it critical race earth you can call it how to stand on your head and leave baskets for all i care it doesn't matter it's wrong now some of you have been you know paying attention
to me others have been sitting there and kind of blazed over and i understand that i'm not the most entertaining person in the world to listen to but again i'm not the nice guy these are the nice people my goal is to become a thorn in your side until you fix the problem now i'm going to replete with a parabola if you call the lamb's tail leg how many legs does the lamb have the answer is four just because you say it something doesn't mean it is thank you could you please provide your address for the record no i will not i am not required by law too thank you that is everyone that signed up this evening but as i said at the beginning we would allow others to speak if you'd like to
but please state your name hi good evening members of the school board administrators and i'd like to acknowledge that the members of community are here my name is caroline garber and my address is 63849 county road 19. and the issue i bring before you tonight is tangential to those that have already been mentioned and it deals with relationships and how important they are and my request is that is in regard to your uh reopening plan for the 2021-2022 school year which i do thank you that you made that um transparent to the public four weeks before the school year so we as parents and our teachers can make decisions about what this school year might look like for them and what i'm asking is that you would remove the social distancing aspect from the requirements
in the reopening plan it's my understanding that we are again going to be asking our students to socially distance and for my five-year-old daughter this meant that she would sit in her desk all day last year and that was a horrible experience she hated school you can imagine that you know and i know that that's not something you won't desire either for your students or for your grandchildren or our students um this is really detrimental to our kids emotional needs to their well-being to their ability to form meaningful friendships and relationships with those other students in their classrooms in regards to the issue of race one of my favorite things is my daughter coming home from kindergarten a wonderful year at model elementary and she had friends that were black friends and brown friends and
said mom i need baby dolls at home that look like my friends and their beautiful skin and then this year coming home and she can't talk to those friends she can't cross the room to say hello to those friends she can't see them at recess instead she is confined to her pot of four and once again now we are creating another issue that was not meant to be this was not an issue that was intended to have but it is a consequence of things that we are requiring of our teachers and students and she a student she has administrators coming in the room maybe just one administrator with a yardstick to make sure that children are properly distanced and that's just a very sad thing and i ask you just very specifically to please reconsider
um your social distancing um this uh social distancing aspect reopening plan and consider removing that especially for our elementary age children thank you so much for your time thank you well thank you for taking the time to hear about your comments i'm marianne alexis at 1238 west report i'm here in joshua and i'm a retired educator and i will be great i'd like to go on record as standing with parents educators and lawmakers and other americans who want children to learn all about america's history without indoctrinating them in a toxic narrative that undermines student community and achievement or implementing crt's racially divisive principles in ways that violate the civil rights act and the constitution efforts to treat students or educators differently based on skin power not only betray fundamental principles but they also violate federal
civil rights laws and other statutes thank you thank you anyone else like to speak good evening taxpayer living motion we made comment at the beginning about uh what we have to give our name and our address that goes against in indiana state law are you aware that you're breaking law by requiring us to give our names there's a lot of upset people here i've had some people bring some signs i'd ask you to hold those up so they can see what they have and pay attention to this they're cartoons but they're not funny there's 65 of the american people are against this if you watch tv look at the internet you can see what's in front of you and yet you have decided to go against what the citizens want we're not going to take
it thank you if anyone else would like to speak this evening all right sir good evening my name is phillip crawford i'd rather not get my address that's all right but um i'd like to speak um on a topic nobody's touched on it too much tonight but it concerns me because i'm a father of two children my one son is three years old my daughter's been two this fall and they're coming up on you know beginning to enter school and um something that that i've been informed of is this public sex education and i just want to caution the board members and everybody here that could hear my voice be very careful because i'm a believer i'm unashamed i believe in god i believe in the bible and i believe our country was founded upon
bible truths god and his word and i'm never going to back down from that and his word says that marriage sex is between a man and a woman that is a god truth this is not philip speaking that's the bible and i know that society has removed god so far from every aspect i'm going to caution the board members god put education in place god put government in place for a reason and that is to teach and train up people and be their leaders and as the leaders you need to be careful that you're not embracing agendas such as lgbtq critical race theory and others i could go on because these things what they do to our children is they confuse them and make them think there's something they're not it's clear in the bible
god made man and woman in his image there's a man there's a woman and you're born whatever you're born with that's who you are and i'm going to stand by that statement until i die because i believe it's a god thing god has my back and god's word is final he's made that clear so i just want to caution you respectfully be aware of this because public sec education is all over the board and lgbtq is one of the biggest agendas in our country right now trying to filter every aspect churches schools government you name it so be aware be aware of that for the sake of our kids the upcoming generation we want them to know the truth of what marriage sexuality is and we don't want them thinking anything else thank you board
members god bless you all have a safe blessed week thank you would anyone else like to speak lessons by now we got all right we'd like to appreciate everyone that was willing to come out this evening and speak to us tonight uh we'll move on to closing items uh 8.1 a miscellaneous board items 8.2 3.28 mislays administrative items i do have one scene confronting the achievement gap that exists in many schools with students of color and students in poverty president george w bush stated that one of the greatest forms of bias is the soft bigotry of low expectations at goshen schools we believe in high expectations for all students all students are capable of high levels of achievement with the right support goshen community schools belongs to the goshen community we respect the role of
parents and believe it is up to parents to teach their children their families personal political spiritual and social values in their homes our role is to ensure that we meet the academic needs of students preparing them for future success this is plenty of challenge for us as we extended to senator dario earlier this evening our purpose is not to promote political groups or agendas we strive to create a safe and welcoming atmosphere for all students all students to learn and as mr weddle said when we open the meeting this is an apolitical body by nature we value the supports of parents and community and we always walk in here but thank you for speaking this evening at 8.3 do i have a motion for adjournment please move the second and favorite
