001um all right I'll call this meeting of a board of education to order Sarah Pledge of Allegiance I pledge allegiance to the flag the United States of America to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God individual liberty and the justice as well all right first item of business is consent agenda recommended action approve the items below which are concluded in the consent agenda hopefully we'll follow on today here you're not so eight or nines eights are nines yeah absolutely have the amount all right recommended action approve the items below six to eight minutes nine a policy second Freedom adoption 9B certification of lead evaluator 9C rehab certification of league evaluators evaluators and 90 special education do I have an emotion yes thank you Colleen do you have a second Ryan thank you
002any discussion subtractions locations if not please vote seven yes okay next sign of business is for the good of the cause do we have any emails all right is there anyone prison who would like to speak all right creation of the public doesn't have anything in it right now if you have any questions so next up is the discussion section for the veterans exemption and firefighter and ambulance worker extensions I will open the floor to we want to do the presentation go through that first okay good um so we are unfortunate that we have a guest here demo from the north Alba office of assessment is here and um that has kindly agreed to um answer any questions that the board members may have with regards to these two provisions I think the more you
003dig into potential resolutions the more you see that there are a lot of decision points for the board and so um having the individual who oversees that for the town of North Alba is an asset for us thank you so much for coming you're welcome um let's talk about the veterans exemption first I took the liberty of putting together just a little bit of information for you that may be different from what Tim's already giving you um I thought it might be important for you guys to see what the lay of the land looks like in terms of veterans extension specifically as it relates to the school district so when you get these you'll see I broke it down there's three two different excuse me three different types of veterans and symptoms there's the general
004wartime exemption there's combat zone and then there's disability and if you look at the numbers these are the number of exemptions in the school district right now so there's 103 in total for the town 62 for the village so a total of 165. the attached sheet shows the different limits that can be set but I put together just some numbers based on the maximum limits so for wartime at 16.5 combat now the way this works is so for Wartime the maximum level that the school district could approve is number k where it falls below where the school districts are all so K is 36 000 for a war veteran um so if you take the 36 000 multiply that by the school tax rate you come up to the 16-5 same with the combat the
005maximum is 60 19 2 disabilities 120 15 9 for a total of almost fifty two thousand dollars based on the school current School tax levy what this is doing is only shifting .03 percent of the tax levy to the rest of the tax base so if you're concerned about oh maybe should we do this because you know we don't want somebody else to have to pay for this the implications are so minimal that I thought it would was good just to give you the maximum so that you can kind of go from there um town wide there's a 221 veterans exemptions 165 in this Lake Placid School District so only 56 are in Saranac Lake now Saranac Lake does have the veterans exemption there at a lower level they're only at nine thousand fifteen thousand
006and thirty thousand um and then I also at the bottom of that sheet I showed you what the town The Village the two villages in the county what levels they're at now their levels are higher than what the school district can approve but both the village and the town of North Alba are at the maximum um actually no I take that back the town is at the maximum level for all three types of veterans uh the village is kind of a little over the middle of Lake Placid and Saranac Lake Villages a little below and this county is is actually even below anybody all of them so I had provided Tim a couple of sample resolutions for the veterans exemption but the biggest component of that is where you want to set the limits so
007that's what really needs to be decided and then I can work with Tim to get the language correct for the resolution that you would then approve if you go with the higher highest Bill 0.03 correct yeah North Alba so this these numbers do not include Wilmington that is correct yeah yeah there'd be a whole town of Wilmington thing yeah so these numbers aren't our final number Bloomington is not being anchored in right yes okay yes and unfortunately I'll have him I don't have access to that information so hopefully you could get that I'm sure you can get that relatively easily from them yeah but in any rate even with the town of Wilmington I can't imagine it's going to be more than one percent no I would guess it would be less than one percent
008so do you have any questions specifically as it relates to the veterans no okay um and then with regards to the volunteer firefighters I didn't really prepare anything additional because I know you've had a presentation by the fire by the rescue squad and the fire department so hopefully they've addressed you know the specific concerns as it relates to the um to the whole you know law I did provide Tim with a copy of a resolution uh you know just a sample resolution and and we did add that one little clause in there because it didn't address the fact that let's just say some a volunteer served for 10 years and then took 10 years off right nine years off and now comes back and says well I've served for 10 years I want the exemption
009doesn't work that way you have to be you know two years and after the exemption has been adopted you know going forward so it's not like retroactive it's an intent you know is for Recruitment and Retention going forward so somebody that served 10 years and has been inactive can come back and serve two years and then be eligible but we wanted to distinguish between that so that's where that that is in red and what this is reflecting is the different levels of there's five different things that you can approve the first one is who's going to be the authority authority having jurisdiction and for the fire department it'll be the village board there be the people that the village that the fire department the rescue squad will go to and say here's my list of
010active volunteers there's a certification form that the member has to fill out and the village Treasurer will sign then that comes to my office along with the application and we're the ones that actually approve it and put it on the role so and for the fight against the ambulance service it'll be the town board that does the authority of jurisdiction uh or authority having jurisdiction so that's one thing that has to be addressed and that is addressed in this sample resolution um the other one is the how many years of service do you want to start with and the town board in the village board I know for sure the town board is going with just two years and I think the village board is also going to do the same both of both entities
011want to provide it to um spouses who's have had their husband or whomever have had 20 plus years of service and they've they've died and we want to continue to extend that to the surviving spouse and then there's also the provision for someone who's killed in the line of duty providing the providing it to the surviving spouse as well so um those are pretty that's pretty much all that it entails you know and I don't think it's going to be have huge implications either with the levy because I don't have a good sense of how many members there are but I I don't think there's going to be that many um you know maybe between the because most of the rescue spot folks are employees you know and there's a fair number of employees with
012the volunteer fire department too but then there's the volunteer base but when I talk to Mike St Louis about it he thought maybe maybe that might apply yeah I think they said and the classes it was 18 phone homes okay renters yeah so yeah actually no that's not right really yeah both members well I got clarification from that with our County director and both members are eligible so there we get two exemptions now if there is one member that's a fire department a member of the fire department one member that's in the rescue squad they would each get the two exemptions same with veterans if you've got two a husband and wife that both served and have the proper paperwork they're also eligible for two exemptions yes that includes that that is not just individuals
013it's exemptions thank you thanks because first of all thank God it's suitable questions [Laughter] pretty much answering 97 and I think we should have waited until the dartation particularly firefighters it was so big to be what's in what's out yeah that's a lot of these sure the answer nine I appreciate that the other thing is I think most people in the town knows that this is a cost shifting the revenue shifting situation um I just felt it was incumbent the board knew if somebody comes up to them at the supermarket and says do you know really what you voted for and now we can say yes we do who is a I think everybody will have a great feel-good feeling about these things but without knowing some of the details I don't think that that's
014the best way for ourselves to position ourselves so I I thank you all for for that I think sure there's a general service that but um one thing that was in the was it that passive uh yeah fast fasting um presentation it was not addressed in what you said and what you answered and that had to do with trusts yes I mean for example I I own my house under the name of John Hopkins irrevocable trust right is that the kind of trust you're talking about yes yes and as far as I know you know typical New York State fashion they put this stuff out there without thinking about the details so we may still have to get some clarification on that but as far as I understand today as long as they're the end
015of see you have to this property has to be your primary residence now many trusts in town are not local individuals um probably 90 of the trust are second homeowners um so you have to reside on the property but if you are a veteran or if you're a firefighter or ambulance worker or your senior that qualifies trust individuals that are part of the trust will that they will qualify yeah kind of addressed and I didn't even think of it as a question right so for example if I'm if I'm in my house with my wife John Hopkinson the third revocable trust primary residents lived there all year round and let's let's say on the scene that would still qualify that's correct yes yes what does it have to do with who the beneficiary of the
016Trustmark well other than the trustee is it has to be the the individual who resides on the property has to be named in the trust obviously yeah amazing yeah yeah so and which is always I mean yeah that's we're going to see that yes right we probably will ask them to provide the trust documentation yeah big stack papers yeah um you know and again the state hasn't really given us guidelines on how they want us to manage it so we're kind of at least probably put into trust I'm the trustee but my kids are the beneficiary unless you see the trust you would not know that right but your is your name or is it in the trust the owner is it of the property will be in the trust so the way in our
017database let's just say it's you know it's the Ron Briggs irrevocable trust and it's going to show your name and then the other individuals that comprise the trust so we do see that the county puts that information in our database when they review the transfer documents to establish a trust so I really don't think it's going to prove to be much of an issue yeah but thank you again for following up well I am going to throw one other little little curveball at you guys um this is information about a senior citizens amended law that just came down the pike and what it's doing is it's allowing us to evaluate income differently than we have in the past the senior citizens exemption is always based on income as well as you know primary residency and
018age you have to be 65 years or older to qualify for a senior exemption in the past had to look at an individual tax return and go through and add up all the various line items on the tax return including non-taxable Social Security which oftentimes puts people over the limit now they're going to let us evaluate income just like they do with star which is adjusted gross and then if they have had an IRA distribution we get to subtract that from the adjusted gross so it's going to end up if we do this which our office has recommended to both the village board and the town board that we adopt this and you'll see there's if you take you know just want to take a minute to read this but there's some really good benefits
019to it you know just streamlines everything you know School star senior we're just looking at your AGI and when we try to explain this to some of our seniors you know how we have to evaluate income their eyes closed over and it gets very confusing because it is um so now we can just tell them or even if they call because a lot of times I'll evaluate income over the phone with somebody to save them the trip in you know now I can just ask them what's your AGI and did you have an IRA distribution and then I'll know you know real quick if they qualify um heart and parcel with this is the state has increased the limits that we can go to a couple of years ago the limit was 37 400 which
020is where the town and the village are now they bump that up to 50 000. that's a pretty big job and our recommendation is we leave the limits alone for now and let's see how many additional people get qualified because of the way we're changing the income evaluation process based on your tax returns so if it's if you file jointly with your spouse then we look at that income um and if you know if you're single individual we just look at your income um if it's in a life estate and we're seeing this more and more where somebody will have the you know the kids along the property but the parents have life use of it um and maybe once in a while one of the adult children will come and live with the parent
021to help them out you know we're cutting people some slack there we're not going to ask for that individual's income unless they're permanent residents taking care of their parents um because this is a really valuable exemption to a lot of people that are really trying hard to stay in their home and pretty much only have social security as income so you guys would if you want to do this change how we evaluate income it's another resolution that I would need to draft for you to get that in place and we're still working on the language for all of that for the town of Village as well as the school um so that's just another thing to think about so you'd be really you'd be looking at adopting three resolutions the veterans the volunteer firefighters and
022ambulance workers and then the senior citizens exemption income limits What entity specifies the minimum number of years of service it was specified as a somewhere between two to five you guys would do that you would make that decision it could be different like I just mentioned the village and the town are going with two years but if you guys want to go with five years or anyone where in between then that's perfectly within your purview we'll just it's a different you know we just have to look at it differently when we're certifying individuals well speaking for myself the whole premise the whole goal for the firefighters the ambulance workers supposed to provide a incentive to get more volunteers right so it would seem to be the way to do that would be the shortest I
023agree that's correct yeah probably the most benefits you can give them right which is what this resolution is reflecting and it definitely definitely from the firefighters presentation here is like like you're going through Kobe semester training and there's a large expense of the individuals so I think that anybody who's trying to gain the system by just getting one year and not doing anything is going to find the Bri on that is not exactly going to work out their favor so yeah I would I would agree I think the two years and then the maximum especially since the I mean for me I think the the overall cost is is less important than deciding whether or not you want to do it because that's absolutely important again if the goal is to get more volunteers coming
024in and the people who stay longer you want to make it as attractive as as you can I should mention that on a tax return you can take a credit a tax credit as a volunteer firefighter 250 bucks these exemptions are going to be more than that if all taxing jurisdictions Buy in but if you've got two individuals about you know husband and wife one can take the exemption one can take the tax credit foreign with regards to the senior citizens exemption um with the other two who are hearing about 30 days prior to action for resolution so kind of is it reasonable to assume that that expectation would be the same yes 30 days yes so any action for senior citizens would come after our September 19th meeting based on our trajectory yeah we
025just want to try to get this in place by the end of October if at all possible um so that you know once it's filed with its state it's done and we start sending out renewal letters in mid-fit mid-november the deadline's not till March 1st but we have found that we do have seniors that actually go away for the winter that do qualify so we want to be sure we capture them before they move they leave even though a lot of other mail is forwarded there's oftentimes Things fall through the cracks what was the date in October that you wanted that but just by the end of the month yeah well the town of villa I'm not sure what the date of the village board meeting is but the town board meeting is October 3rd
026and that's hopefully when they'll do the public hearing on all of this any changes that the town has to make which which really is just a volunteer firefighters and the seniors our uh veterans is all in place and we're at them again we're at the maximum limit and based on the board's calendar if it was amountable for the board to move this Direction with 30 days it would be November 7th as the earliest point of action for us that's fine yeah yeah I think that would be fine yeah but does anybody have any other questions about any of this if you think of anything you know Tim can give you my direct email just email me directly if you'd like or go through Tim either way whatever is easiest for you guys but we're always
027you know we're readily available you're welcome on the exceptions All Right Moving On thank you thank you guys thank you thank you the resolutions just for clarification of the resolutions attached to this action um agenda item are the most current ones that Deb and I are working on so everything that she said reflects What's Happening Here so if if there are no causes of concern or points of clarification these would be the rest of issues for the board's consideration so two weeks before then so any questions feel free to send them okay there's two sample veterans exceptions an A and A B that's right so you'd have to choose that's the one piece and I'll work out because she provided both in-depth said that she would make a recommendation on which of these but they're
028based on the distinction is based on the lemons so this is these are just samples somewhat models that's right one or two of those within our with our Employments and I think it's reasonable um just based on our timeline the fifth that by Tuesday of next week that we could have the draft resolution for the board's consideration and reflection prior at painful time for questions to happen asynchronously and then we call the 19th we'll have some players any questions on that process nope perfect number 10. all right it brings us to reports Treasurer support yeah yes reports halfway that we still have money that's a really short report great that's right thank you I'm done good night no I mean you can see I mean it hasn't changed much um our operating funds and insured
029cash should be open this time of year it goes down because we don't have a lot of cash coming in yet um but we're still pretty healthy at a little over 7.5 million dollars sitting in the bank um you'll start seeing my class that's being increased because you're shifting our money away from our government savings accounts and putting it in our plan right now is you know you can see the eblar the tax history unemployment all three have been shifted over to my class so those accounts will actually go away as savings accounts because that money is now sitting in in the nine class system and we'll start seeing that uh field my class uh increase in terms of what we have there and our goal is to um keep some monkey money in the
030cash suite and operating count and basically use that through the fall and as we start bringing in our property tax revenue that money and that has started I'm back on my daily uh Bank runs um you know Friday I brought about half a million dollars uh in tax payments and today was probably three four hundred thousand dollars and this is just the beginning um I can at any given day in the heart of next spring several million dollars uh today so yeah no this time of year I have multiple cars as much as that money comes in we'll start filtering that into our nine class system um so we'll you know basically spend down the cash Suite to get us through the the fall months because um you know we're back into the session you
031know we're going to be you know paying 170 staff members uh now as a normal year that's an annual about three three hundred thousand dollars every two weeks just in payroll so we'll start spending the cash week down and move all of our excess Revenue as it comes in into the night class um to hopefully generate the larger rate of returns but otherwise you know we are still up you know we're still looking pretty healthy um we are definitely in a good position where we do not have to worry about borrowing money this time of year to pay our bills because we have such a healthy balance oh that's not any questions just report it's always good when Dana has good news uh that brings us to operations report yes so I'm just gonna do
032a highlight of the things that have gone on in the district and buildings over the last two months basically summertime work um with the you know in addition to the normal routine um where the custodians go in and they edit out every single classroom in both buildings they clean them strip them and all that and then they put everything back in so that's an ongoing process they do that every summer it's going to be an opportunity to walk through the buildings you'll see the shiny floors but if we actually look in classrooms you'll see that as well so it's not like they just clean around what's in there they literally pull everything else clean and everything and put it all back um they do that top to bottom in every single classroom so that is
033always a summer project they did some rebuilding of things to go to Pitt at the elementary school that rebuilt uh chairs I didn't realize so important yeah there were uh six classrooms I got moved at the at the Middle High School the installation of 14 ViewSonic boards uh seven in each building these are you know like these right here like the smart boards or the queer touches uh we're putting that um here the gym floor got uh refinished two uh scoreboards were put in as well so if you happen to go in there we have brand new scoreboard um actually two full-size ones on each side um if you remember we have one big one on one side and then a much smaller one on the other side these are two full ones um on
034both sides so it doesn't matter which way you're looking uh the weight room we're progressing there I got everything got moved out walls painted the new floor is in right now the tentative uh installation of the actual equipment is the week of the 18th um is where most of it will start coming in there's some things that are going backward that we probably won't get until October over but the bulk of the weights will be installed at some point during the week we're still waiting on state approval for the odd the auditorium uh repairs that had to go through because of it being a health and safety in terms of what we're doing with lights we had to submit a project and paperwork to the states and you know that's anywhere it's from 6 to
03518 weeks in terms of getting approval so we're still in that process of waiting for State approval before we can move on the auditorium but all said and done our custodians uh over these last two months really did a fabulous job of getting the building ready for everyone to come in uh today and and they're still ongoing so thanks to your staff it's a great job any questions about the operations Tim's Tire radio um so I did put two attachments in there for your reflection at your convenience the first is just the Slate of uh new hires for the district um just so you can see some of the qualifications and backgrounds of the individuals that are starting the year off with us and the second is a presentation that I went through this morning
036with the full staff and um thank you to Colleen and Daniel and Colleen for uh coming in and being in attendance and um you know there's a lot that we can speak about with regards to the summer but I would just like to basically dedicate my report to the palpable energy in the district right now um you go to Locker day at the middle high school and we're seeing the highest number of participants that we've ever seen at the Middle High School filtering in there just today I'm I'm going to the elementary school and we have our open house and the entire gym is filled up with different booths representatives from Florida and boys and Girl Scouts in our own clubs and the Youth Athletic Association and their stations and cookouts and interactive technology stations
037in the classroom and the energy is just solid it's just really positive and my entire discussion with the staff today at opening was to really invoke the Strategic plan as this opportunity for us to move our community in a Direction in consideration of the fact that we touched the lives of over a third of all residents in our catchment and when you're talking about those numbers and you have a plan and you have the kind of people behind the plan that we do in this District we can move our community profoundly in positive ways and so for me it's a Cinderella woman you know after years of planning this Baby's ready to run this classic cars been restored and we're going to take it for a drive and um I I just feel it is
038so palpable so we have great staff starting this is the third year um that I can recall granted this is also my third year so short memory um but uh I've been blessed that in each of the three years that I've been here that we've started with the full complement s for my colleagues around the region that is truly an aberration and a blessing for our students in the community so in all those ways I feel very blessed um just to talk also briefly about some of the energy moving forward um tomorrow is the second day of opening for staff and uh you know we're we're Gathering again as a staff along with community members and board members are certainly um welcome and encouraged to attend the Olympic Center tomorrow at noon for lunch and
039then uh for the viewing of our strategic plan videos and launch at 12 45 in the 80 rink and it is our uh it's our moment you know I mean this this community is so special and uh there's something so wonderful about having this plan uh we're having representatives from the town of North Elba in the village in Florida all in attendance for this moment where we share what our hopes and dreams are for our students and communities so I would just say that my report is one of great gratitude and feeling blessed for the situation and they all be so thank you all right any questions yeah I named his section 10 it used to be Rogers rants yeah I didn't have alliteration for the other candidates so that's why it was clear yeah
040all right thank you very much all right um like nothing in information for the board so that brings us to our next discussion which is our Board of goals and objectives open that document some people just kind of pick down through we have some comments in here I did think that the comments were good about adding the new strategic vision uh adding that language into that opener that would be good to align our board goals objectives along with the new strategic plan that we just voted on so we obviously liked it a little bit so it would be great to roll that in there so I guess I'll go to the first comment we have our next comment is about the uh students first and foremost I think that's a good goal to keep number
041one everybody agrees there hopefully and then we had some comments on the uh the line with emerging from the pandemic Doug Doug you know I think I kind of agree with you I think that maybe we should change the language to reflect where we're at in that process I think there's still some effects so I think that we should you know I think that we somehow that language is there but I think that we could change that language to be more proactive in like the next stage could you add just the words continue to emerge I would say instead of a merge maybe uh individually yeah I think like recover yeah sometimes like we're we're not it's not necessarily that we're emerging from a pandemic but so much as we're dealing with the aftermath so
042do you like the market sure whatever but I think where are we addressing the health the continuing uh yeah are we address is that goal for continued vigilance for health reasons or is that more about dealing with the Fallout from the pandemic because I kind of read it as it's the it's how we are supporting our students teachers and staff from the whole you know our lives being disrupted for several years so that's the way I read it if we're all reading it differently one one piece of consideration is that the the pillars of the Strategic plan really Center on providing the well-being academic success and Innovation for our students and staff and if we're doing those three three things then it will naturally need to contextualize where our students and staff are in in
043this process just food for thought that maybe maybe our current state of affairs is is just being Vigilant to the ever-changing conditions of our students staff and Families in supporting our strategic goals go plus compared to certainly other areas in the state across the country we were somewhat unscathed here we had short periods of time that's certainly not in comparison to what other districts really not a thing anymore and do we need to keep well that was her comment about being in this week it's like yeah she's bringing it up because it's kind of where we're you know yeah it's cold now I mean I wouldn't I would I would say I think it would be better to have a goal of supporting like for example supporting our students in in making up those gaps
044in their education and you know like like we did with the RTI positions and like that kind of stuff would fall under that so I think if we can phrase it in in that and dealing with you know like our staff uh not development dates we would call them self Wellness days yeah that kind of thing uh would fall under like that kind of goal so maybe changing the the wording to be more well should we disagree a little bit because Tim was saying if we're following the first paragraph United engagement and empowered about the kind of meeting some of that in our old statement I think there's always going to be gaps to just in terms of where dance coming from from my perspective our job should always be to have systems in place
045to identify gaps in the learning in the social and emotional needs physical needs of our students and so if we have a system in place to readily identify those and we make strides to address them systematically I'm not sure we could be doing much more in the district and identify issues and plan to address conditions right so it's not that we've uh We've accomplished the goal and that everything has been fully recovered but we have put in CIS in place systems that are achieving this goal therefore yeah bring us such towards greater yeah to me that needs more Colleen I I kind of heard you allude to the fact that like the views of the pandemic is educationally is going to burn for some time here well it is and I think it's not only
046just the pandemic it's just the general social and yeah so yeah the pandemic is is one thing but I think it was just one thing that just kind of triggered a whole bunch of other things so yeah just from what I hear and what I see it's not just that it's just other things too family Dynamics the economy everything yeah so do you feel comfortable then that we've put those systems in place so we can remove that from our goals I would say remove it because we've already got the goals in place to take care of our students we're going to take care of our families we're going to take care of our staff why add language to it that's going to confuse people anymore yeah yeah all right so I think we can I
047think we can we have a a consensus to remove that thing yeah okay so all right easy peasy so we're gonna remove the provided essential support to all students that quote yes acknowledging that the work is not done as a yeah right well and I think that we've we've added we've done our job to put those systems um all right so any other things for uh anything in there in that first strategic goal I don't think I have any more comments that have been made if not move on to strategic goal number two education uh I have a comment there just that that deadline passed so we feel what we can we've achieved that and we can remove it I think so excellent so then the next one would be the receiver report sorry oh
048weird that's all right there we go receiver report on new and continued opportunities offered by the district we're growing diversity and education opportunities and activities available students just looking did we achieve that goal is that something we need to leave in as an ongoing goal or I think we if I'm contextualizing this correctly this came about at the time when the district was working to have the Dei plan put in place and so I know last year the board approved that plan and um diversity equity and inclusion now are veins that travel through all aspects of our district and policy so that's the lens that is applied to everything that we do so receives a report on new and continued opportunities um I certainly don't think that that will Harmon um and having that on
049you know and I certainly think one of the growing edges for for the board could be to receive more reports from some of the individuals who are on the ground as we Implement these key pieces of our plan because you know one of our core beliefs in the plan is that we will honor the people closest to the work the people closest to the work are teachers and directors and principals who are leading these initiatives I think there's value in continuing to receive a report because it will identify opportunities for us to grow so I see no harm there yeah okay any other thoughts on that one so you're going to keep it we'll keep it in Colleen two you had some questions on the biannual reports on student data yeah with the new data
050being that monitoring the implemented that just that might be worth it yeah so we have three data points um so I certainly think it's beneficial my suggestion would be that it'd be done annually um because initially it takes it really takes three data points for it to become data that can be qualifiable until then it's just sort of dots on the plane but um I think an annual report on student data which would show the the initial baselines of students and then the growth in those key areas over the course of the year would be hugely impactful there I mean that would show us where where our deficits are our opportunities and you're just implementing at this time so it's very timely yeah it's it's time so it's an annual we're all in agreed there
051okay uh was the update the next bullet the date you know successfully made that next one strategic goal number three adopt a new strategic plan unless you guys want to do another one for next year yeah it's so much fun doing this one you gotta get product right now that's right and then I had a question on the next one just if we had you know how are we getting this feedback because we you know what it said it's kind of like evaluating the goals that we set for ourselves if we're not actively looking for that feedback then we're going to stop making it go or start asking for the feedback sure um so and it depends uh so in the Strategic plan hopefully that you all have um if you go towards the back
052with regards to the goals there's measurements for all of these and we are going to be canvassing student staff and community members you know through the survey process each year to to let us know whether or not we fit our Benchmark for example under the well-being task force our goal is within five years that ninety percent of our staff will agree or strongly agree to the phrase we will create a school Community where students staff and Families Our United engaged and empowered in a safe and respectful environment and then by that same time frame uh that 80 of our students and families will say that our school provides a safe and respectful environment um so that's that's one example but every year we're going to be sending those surveys out to take the Pulse how
053we're doing with growth if we need to tweak those things so if there are specific areas that we can add to that speak to the board schools that can be thrown into those surveys as well that they otherwise don't mean that's an opera that's an easy thing to do because we're already going through the process okay so I think we can leave that in as long as we're being proactive and including those questions about poor communication with those surveys that we set down maybe to add a little um to add a little ownership to it something to the effect of review the results of strategic plan surveys on an annual basis it sounds like it's part of that yeah a strategic plan surveys to shareholders foreign I guess um so my next one was on
054the opportunity Rises sure representation of the board as part of the Adirondack diversity initiative uh and I think this probably is from a former board member that that was a a very big priority for them so I think um no no it's I think we should change it to District not necessarily the board being present on that board but District representation I think that's important um and then I wonder if either we'd create a new bullet like a new goal to expand that or we expand this to include that around a diversity initiative and other organizations with similar you know like because I'm thinking you know uh income inequality uh housing issues all those kind of social issues that we want the district to be involved in you know is it it's this because this
055is calling out one specific organization so is you know that seems somewhat very narrowly focused for our goal uh for us so is it better to reword that to be inclusive of that but also allow that goal to be a little more far-reaching does that make sense to anybody we should be more inclusive to everything we shouldn't just pin ourselves down to one specific right well and I thought it was I thought it was interesting that it was always just one organization it wasn't just diversity Equity inclusion and place one specific organization but I think that had to do with a member a former member or board members involvement so just take out Adirondack yeah need more lowercase diversity initiatives yeah yeah encompasses whatever organization might be out there correct and then asked to them
056yeah foreign would it be maybe expand it to diversity Equity inclusion not that I want to exclude API all right any other questions on that one or you can feel free to disagree with me it wouldn't be the first time I've ever been wrong all right uh next one Tim I feel like you kind of touched on this at one point and I feel like it was that was a big thing that you just pushed for so I feel like we've I think we're in a good place with this yeah so we can and that I didn't know if we needed to uh roll this one into the one above it or if we should keep it separate it should be said again all righty then I think they change there I think everything else
057is pretty good as goals going forward any other questions on the four goals because comments editions we've removed a couple that maybe frees us up for some other goals so this one here do you want deleted it says um identify key performance indicators well I'm sorry I didn't I didn't go to the next page we're done uh yeah because I feel like this the the dashboard fiscal dashboard was something that never really came into fruition it doesn't seem like something we're going to do going forward because I feel like Daniel's reports are fairly clear in a matter of public records so um we can remove that and most of the information really is coming from the State website anyway I mean our state data go into it and see basically everything that was being asked
058anyway yeah and I because that was when I first came on that was kind of banded about and I think that I mean if you're going to do something like that it has to be like a live update web page kind of thing I don't know if that's uh a real crucial thing that we should be spending our staff time on once we get rid of all the other problems uh we just crossed over yes open at the Middle High School open house technology I wonder if adding some more groups other than encourage student participation identifying technology gaps student staff and family participation I'm sure it's beneficial and I don't know yet if these goals for the board touches on this yet but I know one of the one of the big questions that I
059have moving into the future is what's the balance between soft skills and Technology there's the National Institute of Health put out rather likely study about the impact of excessive screen time and things like that so how are we striking that balance in our district and how are we bringing voices into that conversation so um I'm not sure I'm even posing as a question but I do I do see it as a growing interest industry a lot of investment technology a lot of priority On Wellness where's the compliments those two things yeah so maybe identifying that as a goal would be beneficial s yeah I think so what we word that is evaluate is this a new ballot is this a new I think we're going to create a new one I feel like we're headed
060towards if everyone sees Merit in that I mean you know I'm just suggesting because I just see it as a future item that is well it does seem like there is a lot of talk in those early development circles about even School screen time is not necessarily as good you know the thought is like well they're not on YouTube they're on you know they're playing a math game so it's okay and there seems to be a lot of talk about maybe not you know I don't want to pretend to be an expert and I mean I barely raise three kids so you know we're just spooked by it as best we can uh so you know as as far as like yeah do we want to be a contributing factor to that potential rot that
061it's been exposed to too much maybe just evaluate the implications or how to create a task force to evaluate the implications of Technology on student loading yeah I think that would be a good role specific and actionable it is something that I think is going to computers as we expand the technology available to our teachers and our students you know that's something that we should be cognizant of for sure so how's everyone else feel about this definitely need to find our balance because there's something to be said about technology which is great because I love the Chromebooks I love the immediate feedback from the teachers because as a parent who has a couple kids that struggle you know I like knowing where they're they're at academically and even when the program is going to be
062better because again I struggle with technology there's something to be said about taking a kid outside and doing paper homework and doing learning and stuff like that because right I know that I learned better Hands-On instead of staring at the board one of those soft interpersonal skills I'm sure they're not just brutal it's ridiculous all right so new book new uh new button there what is this being told in order to open the village of Lake Placid responsible to the school district for example there's nothing much of pressure of having to spell with the audience yeah okay so assemble the task force to assess the implications of Technology usage on the overall well-being of our students does that sound okay I think that's good it was a great special on the news tonight that the
063greystones Ireland will Community affects the law that no kids 12 100 could have cell phones smartphones only like just communicating phones yeah and there was a psychologist that talked about the improved the production and uh all sorts of emotional disorders in that great age group and she did a study it was really very interesting there was uh I was notified of a lawsuit of 500 districts across the state um well excuse me Across the Nation who um have filed suit against the major social media companies um we were asked to join the lawsuit with these others for the harmful effects of about the social media on students so I do think that this is the pendulum is very much starting to swing could you include AI um I I think 100 think so like that's
064a major Focus for us as a district um so similar task force or similar implications of Technology usage and the applications of artificial intelligence yeah perfect including the staff on that too London well I thought Tim today that you spoke really well about that topic that is aware of it not fearful of it that we need to be educated pros and cons of it or whatever but I thought that was really really good when you talked about that today in the opening meeting at the college yeah it was just sort of the notion is that the toothpaste is out of the tubes yeah we can't on AI now so how do we leverage it but not uh you know be overtaken by it right it's a useful too very easy so just to harness it
065yeah absolutely but with AI being such um a new topic I think the inclusion of uh staff to this makes a lot of sense though except there's value there right now now and I don't remember where this one came from I think this may have been on there preview so I mean my comment was just I feel like the the language of it is a little adversarial that's what I thought um I think that we could probably cool a bit and maybe make it a little more Cooperative yeah yeah especially given the strides that have been made in the last two years and how much more improved communication has become yes uh I think that maybe making being a little more conciliatory there instead of at the cereal I think the board especially yes so
066I think I think that's good um I had I suggested a uh a change and then kind of lost the plot halfway through writing it so I think it's finished yeah just something to the effect of being collab collaborating collaborating um and operating in good faith with our regional Partners while protecting our interests accountable diplomacy that's the blast of my comments anyway so anyone else would like to take over would be painting oh shoot we're supposed to be professional and ethical too so excellent sorry everyone you're doing great it's like you're taking a typing tests begin how many words per minute do you guys all take Mavis Beacon typing courses I remember that yeah okay so um the district shall work collaboratively collaboratively in good faith with our partners while preserving the interests of our
067students and facilities yes or something you said about having a conversation with somebody well we're not doing yeah perfect that's good perfect excellent all right excellent work everyone um so um we will Let's see we vote on this next or is it one more discussion I think the goal is to have it in by October right right so we should adopt it at the next discussion so like we've made all the changes what I'll do is I'll just clean it up um and then um send it out and then we'll adopt it at the next great so everyone will have a chance to look it over yeah excellent thank you everyone all right 6A was in consent next is an executive session recommended action motion go into executive session to discuss the employment history of
068a certain person a certain Personnel do I have a motion thank you Ron second thank you Ryan won't discuss it yet but please vote thank you foreign yes great uh so we will enter an executive session at 8 18. foreign
