Good evening and welcome to the Peekskill City, uh, school board meeting. Uh, we've just left our executive session, and if everyone could please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. Pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United Kingdom of Ireland. Oh my God. Oh! And I'm now going to turn it over to Doctor Mauricio for the superintendents report. Thank you, President Valon. Esteemed board members. Uh, thank you for being here tonight as well. And members of our community and staff and administrative team, we thank you for being here as well. And we will begin with, uh, Peekskill Pride and seven recognitions as well. Uh, before I begin, I would love for our, uh, Board of Education members who may or may not all know our community partners, but Board of Education members. If you could

please stand. Let's give them a round of applause. That's where you may put a face with the name. And thank you for your leadership. And community members. All of our board members are volunteers and they give of themselves and their time, uh, with the spirit of Peekskill Pride. But they do so as volunteers. So we say a very special thank you to all of you as board members. Uh, we also have some administrators here, but administrators can stand up. We'll give them a round of applause and say thank you. And we have some staff members here as well, so we'll recognize them later. But if you are a staff member, please stand up, let us recognize you and say thank you. Great. And to our partners, we're going to be bringing you up one by

one. And so we'll recognize you at that time. But thank you for being here. Normally we would have this in our administration building where Phil's heels so packed because it's a smaller auditorium. But we wanted to give you dinner. And so, uh, and thank you for all of your partnership with our Saturday academy, our community schools efforts, and so, on behalf of our Board of education, uh, 3600 plus students and all of our families, we say thank you. And that was a wonderful way to say thank you. So, uh, let's give our Saturday academy team. Uh, let's have you stand up and say thank you. Let's thank them for setting up the dinner. Iris and velvet back to Rome on the Mary Mendes battle film Stand Up. They pulled it all together. We began cooking

this morning at 5 a.m. and it all came together. So hopefully you enjoyed your very special dinner. You are always serving our community and that was our opportunity to serve you. So thank you again. Uh, just a few slides I'd like to share with you as a community. And then we will go into our recognitions. Uh, and then we'll have a pause and say thank you. And then you can make your way to enjoy the last bits of sunlight. Uh, that's, uh, there now. So, uh, first and foremost, April is autism acceptance Month, and we want to, um, thank our team here in the special education and special Services Department. Uh, special education parent teacher organization, and all of our students who represent autism. Uh, and thank them for all that they do to make

sure that our students belong in our schools, belong in our community, and we have moved from autism awareness to autism acceptance. And that is something that we have been educated as a leadership team, including myself, by our parents and our children. Um, as that we are no longer being aware of autism. We are accepting it and it is part of who we are as a community. So let's thank our team, our special ed, uh, team who is here today. We thank all of our wonderful students and teachers who lead this effort. Uh, Hillcrest team want to say thank you to our steam fair, uh, team who set this up? Uh, doctor Mujica, Mrs. Rossi, our steam teacher at Hillcrest Elementary School. And we want to thank them for all the work that they did. And

equally important, our parents and our scholars who put together all these, uh, steam activities and showcases. Let's give them a big round of applause. Our high school, uh, steam team as well. Doctor Mujica, all of our science teachers and our lead, uh, science teachers at the, um, uh, middle school level. Uh, want to thank them as well. Doctor Bedi, thank you for your leadership in making this happen to our administrative team. This is, uh, super over and everyone part of our middle school. Thank you as well. Let's give them a round of applause. A great opportunity for our students. Uh, students, we want to make sure that they, uh, visit colleges abroad. Um, when I was in high school, we chose colleges by a book, and we sent out a postcard, and you put, you

know, your name and information. Now, our students get to go on these wonderful trips, and here they are at Harvard. Uh, no. Doctor Holman, I think she's here. Uh, thank you for your apparent engagement. Let's give her a round of applause. So began our Harvard scholars. And so they went to Harvard and Boston University. Always important for us to expose our students. And wait till you hear about where our valedictorian and salutatorian are going to college. You're going to be enamored by their their, uh, accomplishment that is coming out on decision day in May. And so we will share that moving forward. So another round of applause for our high school team. The Peekskill High School a vocal forte, this is an acapella group. If you've ever tried to sing the Star-Spangled banner, it is

a very difficult song to sing. They sang it, um, beautifully at the City Hall. Mayor's state of the city address. Uh, last week I was able to be there with some of our, um, um, staff members as well. They did a wonderful job. Let's give them a big round of applause into our entire music team. We also had a college and career fair at the high school level, informing our students of all the opportunities or many of the opportunities that exist, both in career, um, technical schools unions, as you see, listed here. And then also our colleges as well. Doctor Roman, thank you for your leadership leading our, uh, departments, our p-tech smart scholars, and also our guidance. So thank you. Uh, I accepted this award on your behalf as a community. It's a perfect

night because we have partners here, and the, uh, the award that, um, I received last night in Albany with the Community Improvement award, it was, um, I was, uh, nominated by two of my colleagues, uh, Doctor Sanchez and Mr. Neil Boyle, both superintendents in the region. And, uh, uh, we were selected last night. And so I want to say a very special thank you to everyone for your partnership, because our work is not going unnoticed. I work in a as a partner, uh, for our school community is being recognized all the way at the state level with the commissioner there from education in New York State as well. So thank, uh, all of you. Let's give all of you a big round of applause for our community schools effort. Our NBC's summit. This is our

My Brother's Keeper initiative. They look wonderful in their ties, in their sweaters and jackets. We want to make sure we represent Peekskill, uh, showing that our young men are headed to greatness. And so they went to the county center and White Plains districts from all over the region were there. And we always want to make sure our students look their best, but also are headed, uh, to their very best opportunities in the future. And so let's give our MBK team a big round of applause. Doctor Daniels, uh, and all of our team as well. Doctor Bedi supporting that effort. Our drama club is, uh, performing their, uh, performance once on this island. It is a family friendly play. I'll be there for the open night Thursday. I always loved that night. Um, because you get

to see our students, uh, um, with the jitters on the first night. But then they love it when it's over, and they do a great job. Laura Belfiore is part of that effort. Let's give her a round of applause to our directors and stage crew, everyone who is part of that and to our actors, uh, for all that they're going to do. Tickets will be on sale at the door. Um, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. You can bring cash or check, uh, no IOUs, but we will certainly, uh, welcome you to this wonderful experience. Very important that our community votes on our budget and school board elections May 19th, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the high school. Very important that our community, who are watching online to make sure you come out and make your voices

known on our budget and our school board elections as well. Very important that you, uh, engage in this Democratic right. PTO, uh, will host Meet the Candidate forum on Monday, May 11th. Uh, and that will be at the administration building. Uh, I want to thank our PTO for leading this every single year. And so they will, um, post questions. Families and community members can post questions on the PTO website, this QR code there as well. It'll be in my Friday letter as well. And so, um, we look forward to this, uh, important dialog about leading our school district. And again, we thank all of our board members for their work. This was a great experience. Uh, I'm a big Star Wars fan. It was the first movie I saw. My mother took me to it

in Queens, New York City, back in 1970 something. And, uh, I've been a Lucasfilm fan ever since. And so now I'm into The Mandalorian series. But, uh, stormtroopers came. They were friendly. Um, they came to our Saturday Academy. And this is a whole organization that we learned about. Uh, Mr. Jenkins and I were there along with, uh, Mrs. Bologne, president of Milan, and her family, my family as well. And we learned about, uh, um, almost like Civil War reenactment individuals. They make these costumes, they go around, they do promotions for the films. They are invited to different events. They want to come and do an actual, um, middle school fight scene. And that's where the sabers will be out. And they will do this whole wonderful, uh, enactment of Star Wars movies. And they're coming

out to do that. And the woman on the left, I met her when she worked at the county level as a attorney, and now she is full time retired, and she is all in Star Wars. So, uh, let's give them a big round of applause. They came and volunteered. And all of the helmets and uniforms you have to make on your own. They have to be pro specifications of lucasfilms, and if not, you cannot be part of this group and you see some of it there. Our families got a chance to ask amazing questions. Our students as such. Uh, technical questions on the presenters there and, uh, learn so much about it. And this auditorium was filled with people and we didn't know how it would go, but they stayed the entire time, and they

had two sessions. So we thank them again. And we also had the opportunity to hold the lightsaber. And, uh, students to really, um, feel how that feels. And we have a new security member who is joining our team, uh, making sure we are all safe in our schools. And the force is with him. So thank you, Mr. Jenkins, for taking that on. Yes. You can give him a round of applause. And we kept it short tonight because we have the opportunity to recognize you as partners. So we're going to end our Peekskill Pride slides, and we are going to move into, uh, we have stronger together as a community. And that is celebrating the partners who help our students and families thrive. And so with that, I'm going to call up our amazing Saturday Academy

team, Iris of Belvidere, Melanie Roman, and also, uh, Kamari Mendez battle. Please come on up and give them a round of applause to encourage them. Okay. Good evening, Doctor Mauricio. Peekskill Board of Trustees staff, family members and also partners of the community. My name is Miss Sepulveda, along with Doctor Ramon and Miss Mendez Battle. And we support and work the Saturday Academy, uh, program of our district this evening is about gratitude, partnership, and incredible impact that happens when schools and community organizations come together for children and families. On behalf of Peekskill City School District, thank you to our honored guests, families, staff, and students for being here today. Saturday Academy has become so much more than a program. It has become a place where families feel welcomed, students feel inspired, and our community comes together

with one shared purpose helping children succeed. Yeah. Saturday Academy represents what, if possible, when we think beyond a traditional school day. It is a space where students can grow academically, socially and emotionally. It is a place where families can connect to resources, learn together, and feel supported. It is also a place filled with joy, opportunity and belonging. Most importantly, Saturday Academy works because of the people and the organizations in this room who continue to show up for our students this year and all together. We hosted six Saturday Academy events that welcomed and served more than 5000 students and family members. We provided over 20 workshops and experiences focused on health care, the arts, financial wellness, community engagement, and family support. Our community partners generously donated their time, their talents and presence, contributing more than 100

hours of direct volunteer service throughout the year. But beyond the numbers, what matters most is the impact because of you. Students felt inspired, families felt welcomed, and our community grew stronger. Before we recognize our partners, we'd like to share a brief look at Saturday Academy in action. This one minute video captures the smiles, learning energy, and connection that your support helps make possible. Thank you. Every photo in that video tells the same story. Partnership matters. When we look across all of these partnerships, we see something powerful. We see students exposed to careers. We see families connected to health resources. We see confidence built through karate. Creativity sparked through the arts and trust strengthened through community partnerships. This is what happens when a community wraps around children because of you. Saturday Academy is not just an

event. It's a movement of support and opportunity. We are proud to recognize sun River Health and Jasmine Session for their continued support of student and family wellness. The partnership has helped connect our families to valuable healthcare resources and services that strengthen our community. Thank you for helping care for the whole child. Jasmine. Oh, also, we have Vice President Morrell. Um, and we're gonna ask him to come up as well from Sunriver and as we honor. Yes, yes, as we honor. Um. Yes. Thank you. We gratefully recognize Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union. Well. Represented by Roger Campos as your mother Solorzano. Through financial literacy and community support, they help empower families with tools for long term success. Thank you for investing in our students and families. Please come on up. We are grateful to Fidelis Care,

represented by Anthony Baker and Solomon Ventura, for their partnership in connecting families to quality health care. Please join us. We proudly recognize. The city of Peekskill, Jonathan Zamora. 021life skills that extend far beyond the dojo. Thank you for building strength inside out. To our partners. I. We gratefully recognize when Ways Innovations and Anthony Bach are. Your partnership demonstrates the power of corporate citizenship and commitment to community growth. Thank you for supporting

our Peekskill families. This is when our December happens, when waste makes half at 75% of that magic happens to our families. So huge. Thank you. We also want to proudly recognize Affinity by Molina Health Care and Fritz Tavares. Your support connects families to critical health resources and services. Thank you for helping strengthen our community. He is also another huge partner in our Thanksgiving Turkey giveaway and also our toy drives. So a huge thank you for that. Mr. Morale, we are honored to recognize Wilfredo Morales for his dedication to the arts and creative enrichment opportunities for our students. Thank you for helping our students explore imagination, culture, and self-expression. Last but not least, we are honored to recognize Doctor David Mauricio, superintendent of the Peekskill City School District and founder of Saturday Academy. Through his leadership,

vision and unwavering commitment to students. He continues to expand opportunities and strengthen pathways for success across our community. His dedication to educational equity and innovation has made a lasting impact on the lives of countless students and families and staff. A huge thank you, Doctor Mauricio. Thank you all. Thank you all. Um, totally unexpected, but I appreciate all of you. Um, I would love for Mr. Lewis, who was our first Saturday Academy administrator, to please come up and join us as well. Yes. Now you know why we had this at such a big stage. Um, Ellen, your was part of the initial team. And have her come up as well. Please. Come on. Ellen. I'm sorry. Ellen. Hackett, please come on up. And we have Carmen Vargas was also part of that initial team as well.

And Maria Flores. We can't forget her. I know she's will leave tonight, but let's give Maria a big round of applause. She does amazing work helping this work. Oh, yes and no. All right. So yes and no. Uh, community school effort would, um, be complete if we did not have family engagement. And so that work again, Maria Flores began that work. Thank you to the board for letting us buy a firehouse and converting it into a family resource center. And we have Doctor Holman who's here. We're going to bring her up and have her be part of our community schools effort and say thank you again. And now I'll turn it back over to you. I. There are other. And this is why I was looking out. For. With me anyway. Okay. All right. Uh.

My God. Feeling. Thank glory, I appreciate you, thank you, thank you, thank you, but I do. Oh, yes. Oh okay I know, I know you okay. Oh. So as we conclude, please know that your presence in the lives of our students matter more than you may realize. You show our children that in their community, we all believe in them. Have a great doctrine. Let's give Iris who covid a doctor Roman Kamari Mendez battle a big round of applause for leading our Saturday Academy. And I would also like to thank, uh, Bronwyn McDonald. This was her brainchild. To have a special dinner for our partners and bring you to a board meeting to recognize, uh, all of you for all that you do. So thank you, miss McDonald. Thank you. To our partners. We're going to

take a short recess so that you can take your pictures. And, uh, you're welcome to stay for the board meeting. Uh, but we know partners. You got to get ready for your business, uh, work tomorrow. So thank you, everyone. I'm going to take a short recess, and then we'll come back to our board business. So. Gracias. Thank you. I know there is a lot of food in the gymnasium, so please, uh. And we have boxes, and so you can take that as well. So thank you for that since. I don't want to hear about. Okay. I know. Yeah. You. I. So. I think. I. There. Can I get out of here? Oh! I. I. I have, uh, I had. I. Here. Have better luck with some of the other. Thank you for. The end for

repairs on. Often. That's a business one. We. Of. I don't know if a student did it or if it was an issue or whatever, but the like, it's right at the bottom of the right part. Get your life saver. But fortunately, that was a good. First. Yeah. That's right. Yeah. That probably. Is Washington a racist? Thank you for helping out. So. Okay. Oh, yeah. Oh, right right I don't. No, no, no, it makes sense on that one. When you said like JFK, I was like, you went through his stuff. Right, right. Right, right. And that's just for special ed K. That's why I was like, what? You know, like, if I was like, I didn't realize it was the out of district. Yes. It's, you know, Parentally place. Yeah. That's why I was like, no,

no, I didn't have no question reminding me about the high school play because I kind of forgot I'm going to go to that. I don't know if I'll go Thursday or. Oh, yes. Yes, that should be great. They always do a great job. Yeah. I love the opening night. And then hopefully we'll hear about the the grants. Yeah. Yes. Oh I can't wait. Yes. You got three in the works. Yeah. They were awesome. Okay. Welcome back everybody. We're going to move on to the hearing of the citizens. So the Peekskill Board of Education desires and values the input from the entire school community. For those who wish to address the board, please sign in and state your name, your city and town of residence for the record. And please keep your remarks to three minutes

or less. Discussion of district personnel is prohibited. Although we do not engage in dialog, we are listening. Please leave your contact information for prompt follow up. Is there anyone who wishes to be heard? No. Okay. Old business. Is there any old business? Uh, yes. I have a question regarding old business. Um, a few months. Sorry. Um, a few months ago, I believe it was, um, the black diamonds came in regarding, um, like the bussing situation about how they wanted to know about, like, how much were costs for bussing, um, younger kids or older kids? Um, I was at the esteemed Barrett Hillcrest the other day, and a parent approached me, and she she was unaware that we didn't bus after fifth grade. So she was asking me what we what could she do to, you

know, you know, get her child to have bussing. And I was like, unfortunately, we can't do anything about it. Um, you know, the budget's about to come out. We haven't done anything yet. Um, but I said, she's like, what's the number? And I was like, I don't have a number for you. So we could just follow up with some more research of something so I can respond to her with like a finite I told her about, like, the electrical vehicles are and we contract out. I explained all that to her. So. Yes. Um, that was it. Yes. Thank you. Uh, thank you. Doug. Oh, okay. Thank you. Uh, thank you for the question. And thank you for I also received an email from a parent as well, um, heading to the middle school, and, um,

Mrs. Hawthorne will be, uh, putting, um, the information together for us. We can certainly do that. And we'll share it with the board. Um, what I can share is that this was part of a community, um, and board vote. Uh, the community was part of that decision, uh, in deciding the mileage, but also, uh, at what grade levels? We would, um, have transportation. And it also includes out of district, uh, students who are in, uh, private schools as well. So what we do for our district, uh, we would also do that for, uh, students who are out of the district as well. So that is also a cost. So we can put all of those details together for the board to. Yes. Thank you for the question. Yeah. And I have one more, actually. Um,

I actually saw Miss Scardino, who was the senior adviser, um, the other day. And the senior trip is going to universal, I believe, in a week and a half. So I wish them all a safe trip. So I hope they have a lot of fun. Um, another follow up was I remember last year, um, a family was requesting about, like, the tickets. Um, they wanted more tickets. So I know it's upcoming that our graduation is going to come. And I think the scoring is that there's about 300 kids graduating, I want to say or like, and the senior class around there. So I was wondering, um, if we could be a little bit more proactive in case it approaches again about ticketing. How are we going to do that process? Are they allowed eight tickets

per person or. And if someone only needs to like, yeah, I just want to think of something in case that question comes up again, which it probably. Well, yes. Uh, great question. Every year around may we get this question. And the, the beauty of it is the excitement of graduation, uh, which is a wonderful milestone in our, uh, scholars lives. Um, um, that I know you can, uh, will work with, uh, Doctor Ferris, who sends out that letter, uh, to our families, um, to our community and to our board trustees. Um, we used to have graduation at the most recently, um, we had it at the Paramount, and families got two tickets. And so, uh, thank you to the board. Um, thank you to the recommendation of our team. We post Covid, we were on

the parade field, and then one year, we had to separate the graduating class. And because the, um, uh, rain was coming that day, uh, predicted. And, uh, you know, I love making decisions about. Weather. Um, and so we moved to the Paramount. But there were so many graduates, which is awesome. We had to separate the graduating class to, uh, 6 p.m. and, uh, I think it was 8 p.m. and the students were very upset about that. And they emailed me and the board. And so we, um, we honored that request for the future graduating classes. And so we moved to the county center, where we were able to provide more tickets to our, uh, families. We do live streamed the whole event. Um, and we're able to give many more tickets than to, um, and

so we'll get that exact number out to our families. And thank you for the question and thank you to that family as well. Um, and so, uh, students also do share, uh, tickets, uh, amongst themselves. And we do allow for that. Um, some families have 3 or 4 people. And so they are able to give those tickets out as well. Um, but yeah, it does become a little bit difficult if we give unlimited number of tickets. I was thinking like like a ticketing system, the sense like, oh, put your name and how many tickets do you want? So it can be like a, you have a count of like, say, a thousand tickets and then like Alan wants only three, Amy wants two. So it can be like allotted who needs what number. So it's

not like, oh hey, do you have an extra ticket? I don't know if there's something like such like that or not. We'll we'll take a look at it as we plan for graduation. So. Okay. Thank you. Thank you. Any other old business on new business on tonight's agenda will be adopting the Boces 2627 budget. Um, board candidates, are there any questions or comments? Huh? Can I please have a motion to accept content consent? Except agenda item seven A and seven be so moved. Moved by Gremlin. Second. Second by Allen. All in favor? All right. Any needs. Any abstentions. Policy readings. There are no policy readings. This meeting. Um, accepting of minutes. Are there any questions or comments? Can I please have a motion to accept the minutes for business meeting? March 17th, special BOE meeting,

March 24th and the business meeting work session from April 7th. So moved by Frank. Second. Second by Amy. All in favor? Uh. Any nays? Any abstentions. Consent agenda. Any comments? Questions? Thoughts? Sure. Just want to recognize in the audience we have, uh, Thomas Brundage, who will replace, um, our high school social studies teacher. Who? Mr. Thomas, who is retiring. Uh, let's give him a round of applause for all of his dedication. I am also an elf. And of course, with Thomas, if you can stand up and let us recognize you and love the suit. Uh, appreciate that. And thank you to you and your significant others. Who was with you today? Welcome to Peekskill. We also have, uh, uh, before the board. Um, Miriam Castro, who is going to be, uh, is recommended tonight for

the board. The board members met with her, uh, week ago. Uh, she is going to be our supervisor of special education. So, Miriam Castro, if you can please stand. Let us recognize you. Welcome to the administration team and thank you for all you do. Um, as a social worker at Woodside, amazing work, and we're so happy to have you in this new role. So please kiss your family and tell them you'll see them next June. Uh, and we look forward to having you part of our, uh, special services team and our special education team. Another round of applause for Miriam Castro. Also want to recognize Milagros Koosman, who is an oxide and moving from interim assistant principal. I see her principal, Mrs. Anna Budds. Uh, they make a great team. Congratulations. Tonight the board will

vote on the replacement. Thank you for all that you have done this year. We appreciate all of your time and effort. Thank you, President Villa. Uh, I think we'd also like to note that Step Marker Contracting is donating to Oxide School for their trip to the city. Natural history. Visit the Natural History Museum for the second grade. So, um, we're always open to donations, especially for fun things like trips. Um, but we really want to thank them for for making that possible. I know that was such a meaningful trip for so many of our kids. Yes, $1,000. Yeah. One step myself. Yes. So if there are no other questions or comments, can I get a motion to approve consent agenda items ten through 13 A is that moved? Moved by Brandon. Second. Second by Allen.

All in favor? All right. Any nays? Any abstentions. Any committee reports or comments? Uh, yeah. Uh. Um, I mean, Doctor Michaud met with the, uh, athletic department, um, to discuss, um, some new policies and so forth that we may have coming, um, for next semester or actually start implementing it this semester. I mean, this year. Um, and, you know, the whole focus is just, uh, making sure that we're doing our due diligence when it comes to, um, you know, athletes participating or students participating in athletics. Uh, you know, in piece goal. We want to make sure that we are doing everything that we can to make sure that we're giving them all the tools that they need to be successful. Um, and we also just want students to know that they're students before they're athletes.

Yes. And so, um, you know, that there's definitely some oversight that, you know, we're putting in place, um, to make sure that they are on that right path to make sure that we're, uh, they're ready for that, uh, uh, higher education. So, um, I just want to thank, um, um, Austin and Doctor Mauricio and his department for putting all that stuff together, and I can't wait for you guys to see it, because I think it's going to really make a difference in, um, um, of our students lives. And thank you, uh, Trustee Jenkins, for your input. That was invaluable. You're on the other end of the college, uh, spectrum, uh, for our students. And so your input was valuable, and we look forward to bringing that in board. There are two coaches who are leading

this effort, um, along with, uh, Doctor Bedi and Mr. Goldberg. And so we're looking forward to bringing that policy to the board. And also. Congratulations, doctor. Marissa. No. Thank you. Thank.
