on that policy in this moment um so in between now and our second read please read up on that policy and ask any questions that you may have um next time now when we were talking through this uh an issue that is uh not identical but similar in some ways because there's liability and risk involved is uh what is our our District's stance on Just Animals on campus in general could be at a soccer game could be at a football game right so uh in terms of community relations where do we stand so we did look at some Exemplar policies from other districts about their stance on um folks having animals uh on campus outside of school hours and uh that actually turns out to be the first big nugget that is consistent is um

community members shouldn't be present on campus with an animal um during school hours we don't want visitors as welcoming as we want to be to the community we don't want unnecessary visitors here because of school safety outside or during school hours so um the first line on um the policy states that animals are prohibited from school grounds 30 minutes before school begins and 30 minutes after school ends so we keep a little grace period at either end of the day uh for safety purposes um dog and other animals capable of wearing a leash must be leashed and properly restrained at all times all animals must be under the owner's control at all times so that leaves it up to uh the Community member say they're coming out here uh for a soccer game or an

outside event uh if they're going to bring their dog it needs to be leashed and it needs to be under control right so there's some personal accountability uh there for those folks um pet owners are required to be responsible by cleaning up and removing any animal waste that might end up on school grounds uh that's consistent with other policies we looked at animals are not allowed on playgrounds or athletic fields slash the track slash courts like the tennis courts um because those are areas that we maintain for our student athletes they're not areas that we maintain for for dogs and other animals um of course assistance animals and animals used for law enforcement purposes would be exempt from this policy and let's see here um and then the last piece is is animal owners assume

all risks for the safety of persons or property when bringing their animals on school grounds and uh the district reserves the right to deny access uh for any animal at any time so we do have that ultimate Authority but as long as a community member is here with a a well- behaved animal and it's not hurting anybody we're okay with it all right so any questions on those two first reads before I move on okay all right so on to our second reads okay so the first uh of the second reads would be our policy group on instructional and Library materials um again these policies have been around for a long long time we went through all of the reposition and reformatting of these policies during our first read uh so we will eliminate 8331

that's controversial issues that will become part of 8330 which will be entitled objection to instructional materials and controversial issues that policy um governs how community members and folks within the district could challenge those materials for inclusion uh either as a um uh an instructional material or a material in the libraries um 8340 would become instructional materials for non-public school students that governs how we um provide access to information and materials for students who attend private schools but they live in the district there are um rules that we need to follow there and then um 8320 uh becomes that main policy that governs everything that we would want to include um as a part of a library material or instructional material and what I do want to do before we move on is I want to

bring up two specific sections because I think they're important to highlight when it comes to these policies so I want to take a look at 8320 and I just want to go down here and read review these a through G so these are our objectives in the selection of instructional materials so this is what we need to consider when we're including instructional materials first does it align with New York State learning standards uh letter B Implement enrich or support the district's curriculum and instructional program taking into consideration the varied interests abilities and learning style St of students C meets the varied needs and interests of staff and students D presents various sides of controversial issues so that students May develop critical thinking and reading skills resulting in the ability to make informed decisions uh letter

e offer Global perspectives and promote diversity by including materials by authors and illustrators of all cultures materials will not be excluded because of race nationality religion gender gender expression sexual orientation political views uh or social views of the author F provides staff and students with a wide range of up-to-date instructional materials of all levels of difficulty in a variety of physical and digital formats including print and non-print such as electronic and multimedia uh including subscription databases and other online products ebooks educational games and other forms of emerging Technologies and uh G affords students the opportunity to explore a diverse range of literature to develop and strengthen a lifelong love of reading so those those are the materials we want right uh and this policy outlines that now what we then need to look at is

we need to look at policy number and you just have to forgive me for confusing the numbers for a second objection to 8330 and I want to hop down to the challenging part challenging of wait where are we I skipped it right here objections to instructional materials so I'm going to skip down here where my cursor is District community members who have a question or concern about instructional materials are encouraged to bring these questions or concerns to instructional staff Andor the school library media specialist so we encourage our community to First raise their concerns with our staff members who are closest to the instruction material whether that's a teacher or our one of our library media Specialists after that District community members who wish to formally object to instructional materials must submit their objections in

writing to me District staff who object to instructional materials must follow the same process as community members um and challenge instructional materials will remain in use and or circulation until a final decision has been made the board will be informed of any objection um that the superintendent receives so you all will know if this is happening um now the superintendent will designate a Review Committee to investigate and evaluate the challenged instructional materials the committee will include among others the school library media specialist from the building where the objection originated the director of curriculum instruction Department SLG grade level leaders and the building principal the committee will evaluate the challenged materials according to the district's criteria for evaluation and select of instructional materials so back to that list that we reviewed in the other policy so

those really are the two major there really aren't major changes there really tweaks at this point because there weren't substantial changes to these policies other than how they were organized but the policy Committee just took a little bit of time to think about this paragraph right here and what would really create a thorough and objective event evaluation of any material that may be objected to so those are those are really at the heart of um our second reads in this policy group uh any questions before I go on okay all right so then we are now going to take a look at the update uh policy 7552 a second read on our student gender identity policy um if you remember this policy is uh La was adopted in 2012 last Revis in 2015 um and

the updates to this policy are really driven by updates in law so the first one uh the big update had to do with uh civil rights law 64 and the gender recognition act and that excludes legal name changes being public for transgender individuals uh this prompt schools to ensure that records for transgender individuals are updated with the new name to ensure that the school records don't quote out their status as a transgender individual and that really is in an effort to keep it private um and that's consistent with uh uh the gender recognition act which also stated that um any name changes that are part of the public record for a transgender individual will be sealed so that really is us just following suit um with that uh update in civil rights law 64 so

the gender recognition act further uh provides that the gender designation of X as a legal gender designation um so that now uh pushes Us in the State uh to have that gender um status listed on all our forms so we need to follow suit with that as well and the policy is updated um to be copacetic with that um there was a minor update in the definition of gender just to bring it in con to be a consistent definition with the definition of gender within uh the dignity for all students act and then um finally uh edlaw section 409m it was passed in 2021 indicates that uh we need to have our single stall gender neutral bathrooms labeled as gender neutral bathroom um so the policy was just updated to be um consistent with uh

policy 5633 which simply States the same exact thing um so that's our second read on the gender identity policy and why aren't we moving here there we go so in our December meeting we'll take a look at the ones we just did a second reading on and we will be looking to adopt or retire uh those policies we'll do second reads on our assistant animal assistant animals and animals in the school or animals on school grounds policy and then um we ran out of time at our last policy committee meeting to really come to consensus on what our next round of reviews will include so we'll have to Shore that up and we'll add that for December so any questions on the policy updates all right thank you all right so is there a motion

to approve the policy manual modifications as presented so move is there a second any discussion all those in favor say I I all of those opposed motion carried all right so that's a we're getting there okay so Item B District incident response plan is there a motion to approve the 2023 24 District incident response plan so more is there a second second any discussion all those in favor of our 20 2324 District incident response plan say I I all of those opposed motion carried all right item c a resolution appointing the director of transportation is there a motion to approve the resolution as presented so moved is there a second second any discussion all those in favor of appointing Leslie uh say I I all those opposed motion carried yay welcome if your official [Applause]

welcome all right um I would like to block items D through I if uh there's no um unless anybody has an issue what's the word I was looking for there's no so items D through I as presented is there a motion to approve items D through I under new business as presented so moved is there a second second any discussion all those in favor of items D through I as presented say I I all those opposed motion carried all right and Personnel um I would like to block items a through D um if there are what's the word I'm looking for no objections thank you if there are no objections any um it must be getting late is there a motion to approve items a through D under personnel as presented is there a second

any discussion all those in favor of items a through D under personnel as presented say I I I all of those opposed motion carried on to adjournment uh look at that it like automatically highlights it's so bad um is there can I get a motion to adjourn the regular board meeting for the purpose of entering into executive session for the purpose of discussing matters leading to the appointment employment and discipline so moved is there a second any discussion all those in favor of adjourning say I I all those opposed motion carried here
