Okay, we're back on. Are there any additions or deletions to the agenda? Okay. Is there a motion to accept the minutes of the November 12th board meeting? Jackie, a motion. Jenny second. All in favor? >> I uh hearings and petitions regarding items that are on the agenda tonight. Is there anyone here to offer public comment on any agenda items? Okay. Uh I'll ask for a motion to enter into executive session then to uh discuss matters pertaining to the employment of a particular person and also to hear a matter that's quasi judicial in nature. Thank you Mike. >> Second Dan. All in favor? I Okay, we are back on. We are moving into business considerations. Before we take those up, there is an addition to the agenda this evening. Sue, if you would please read the
addition. >> Yeah, we're going to be adding 616. Be it resolved that the board of education upholds the superintendent's disciplinary determination of student A. >> Thank you, Sue. >> Let's make a motion to add it. >> All right. Is there a motion to motion to add? >> Jenny second. Pete. All in favor? >> I. Okay. So now we have 6 1 through 616. Is there a motion for one or more? Motion for all. Jackie second. Dan uh would just like to uh acknowledge the holiday donation from SEIC of $2,000 to be split among the four buildings. Thank you very much for that. Is there any discussion regarding the business considerations? No. Okay. All in favor? >> I All right. Personnel considerations. We have 71 through 727. Is there a motion for one or more? >>
For all. >> Mike moves for all. Second by Dan. Do we have any discussion? >> Yeah. Yes, that's what I was going to say. >> Like to do recognitions for tenure. >> You can do it. You're you're the boss. >> Yeah. [laughter] >> As a former teacher, I want >> Yeah. Okay. Perfect. I'll take I'll jump on it. I got Thanks. So, yeah. Uh within those personnel appointments tonight, uh we do have uh several tenures uh being awarded to to uh staff. So we want to call those out to uh Miss Danielle Jones, elementary teacher at Peter B. Hanya Schmidel, school school psychologist at the high school, Kimberly Lensich, the special ed teacher at the middle school, Laura Bartlett, elementary teacher at AW Becker, and Laura Barry, a TA at Peter B. Queensman's. I just
want to congratulate all them um on their hard work to get to that point and wish them the best going best going forward. [applause] >> Oh, there down there. >> Yeah, >> there's three retirements today. Yep. Thanks for bringing that up to me. >> Yeah, there are also three retirements. So, as somebody who did that just two or three years ago, I have great um happiness for them to be their long career to be able to move on and do some great new things. So, congratulations to uh Sandy Crin, our uh secretary at Peterb Queensman's, Kelly Dogget, reading teacher at Peter Bman's, and Marissa Tut, elementary teacher, a AW Becker. And I will say we'll expect a whole bunch more in January. [laughter] >> I already know they're coming. I met with them already. So,
congratulations to those three as well for that. Yeah. [applause] Thanks, Matt. Any discussion on personnel considerations? >> All right. All in favor? >> Iform informationational items. Uh there is one item in here number two regarding the board communication plan. So this is a document that uh the superintendent has proposed to us. It's really a joint document among the superintendent and the board and it's a working document. So although there's no uh communication issues right now, thankfully uh that's actually been fantastic with Superintendent Chandler in place, I just want to take a moment to acknowledge how well the communication is working uh not just among the board but interactions with staff and families. So thank you very much for that. >> Great. It's good to hear. Thank you. >> Yeah. Um but this communication plan is
really designed just to give some framework to how uh the communication should occur, what the expectations are both of the superintendent and of board members and as things evolve in the future, this will be a working document that can also evolve. Um so did anybody have any comments on that as you had an opportunity to review it before this evening? Are we all generally good with the framework that's laid out? >> Yeah, I have one. Yeah. [clears throat] I don't know if Mr. Chandler recalls which one that was. >> 42 something. I I >> think I think it's in four. >> It's number four. Is it 4B? That was a long time ago. Sorry, Mike. I didn't know we're talking about it again tonight. >> Yeah, no problem. >> That's what I'm trying to remember
real quick. >> Centralized communication. >> It was I thought it was one of the twos. Yeah, >> that one. >> Yes, real quick. >> 4 A. >> Was it Was it 4 A3? >> That's the one I have a question on. So, >> okay. >> Yes, it was. So, thank you. >> I thought so. >> 43. Yes. >> Yep. >> And it's it's entirely open for discussion. I, you know, um, just to reiterate what Mike said, tried to put something together that could be useful. Nothing like this existed when I arrived here. tried to put something together that would be useful to the district perhaps in perpetuity, useful to future board members, etc. Um, and it is a working document, so I'm I'm sure there'll be areas where we're like, >> maybe we needed to
clarify that one. It's not to say that I, as a parent, can't email my a child's teacher and say, "No, he didn't finish the homework last night. We're going to take care of it tonight." Right. >> Okay. No, >> as long as it's not prohibiting me from communicating with >> my children's teachers for educational purposes, I'm good with that. >> From my perspective, it's really just to make sure that I'm in the loop and I'm aware of what's going on because if in that case, I don't need to know. But, you know, for instance, you have a question for Jean about something, I would like to make sure that I also know. >> Yeah. Which is not to say that Jean wouldn't tell me, but >> No, I'm good with that as long as >>
Would you would you say like for example, we had a a question like for Jesse or Gene, we could still email them but copy you on it? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Yeah. I just Yeah. It would seem very broad to me. I mean, we're a small district. We have many people in many different roles. I even though we're doing it as board members, so I'm not so much against that reasoning. I know what your reasoning was. But listen, I talk to teachers on a regular basis because I used to represent them and I still know them all and generally it's not about board obviously not about board issues >> right >> so I don't know if we >> just discuss clarifier or should we clarify it to regards to you know board >> business
>> yeah we just talk that clarification right >> because the way it reads it doesn't >> correct >> it's like you can't do it at all it's not going to happen I I would never agree to that so I so the thing is >> I can't agree to that as a parent of a child two children in the district. I need to be able surely not as a parent but it you know my role primarily now other than sports association is a board member here. So but I still talk to all these people about all kinds of different things sometimes school related but not necessarily board items. So I think Craig's answer is you know we have an issue before the board uh you know I don't know you know some uh curriculum change we're
making or who knows what it is. I think the intent is not for us to be calling up and say hey what do you think about that? what do you want us to do? Or you know, you know, they're probing for information, all that kind of stuff. >> So, why don't I take a stab at amending the language in that one and I'll put it in your next update to take a look at. >> That was really the only one that I like. >> Like there's sometimes like there may like there's a question for Jesse or something like that or to Jean for clarification. That's certainly okay, right? And just copy you on it so you have it. Not like probing like what's going on, but like a clarification question or Okay. >> And and
generally everybody does that now anyway. >> We do that now. >> Like I came in the other day and I there was a garbage issue I haven't noticed. So I went it was maybe two weeks ago, whatever. But you know, I went to the principal and said, "Hey, can we get that thing emptied?" You know, I don't want to have to CC you on that. [laughter] >> I'll take a stab at updating it. Thank you. >> I run it past you guys. >> Can I ask you one other question in here while we're on it? It's not necessarily writing, but it's about if a board member visits a school, it would be relevant is in regards to talking to somebody. Um, right now in our if a board member is going to visit a school,
um, any school as a board member, um, we have to either we we have to contact Mike or Craig and just let them know we're going to be in the building. But if if that occurs and someone starts talking to the person that's in there in relating to an issue, they should forward that to you to make you aware. >> Right. So there is currently a policy about board members visiting the school, but I think that's >> it's implied to be in your board capacity, >> but we're always board members, >> right? So it's I think it's just important to remember that you can't ever really not be a board member, right? So if somebody brings something up to you that is board related, being able to say this is really not the right time
or place and >> then looping me into that communication >> and that honestly stems from I remember when that got put in that you know into our policy. There was a period of time where we had some board members in particular. There's a couple of things going on, but where they were showing up during construction projects as a board member telling the construction guys, you're doing it wrong and we need to do this and no, you're not doing that footer right and you know that. So that's where that came from and people showing up. So >> okay, >> I have one other uh question just on um 5C3. Um it notes having a clear understanding of communication hierarchy during the superintendent's absence. um it would just be helpful for that hierarchy to be noted you
know who is who is the next person that we should contact. >> So so what would happen is if I was going to be unavailable I would notify all of you and tell you at that time. >> So in most cases it would be Gan as the assistant superintendent but let's say in a you know some scenario neither one of us are available then it would be Jesse. >> Okay. Uh, so at that time I would communicate what that hierarchy would be. [snorts] >> Okay. >> I don't anticipate it. >> Flowchart's good though because >> Yeah. I mean I think it would be helpful to still have it like just even if it just generally says it goes from the superintendent to the assistant super out and your car goes off the road or something,
you know, >> right? Yeah. I mean, god forbid something happens to you. >> You're okay, but your car's off the road. You can't say. [laughter] >> Thank you for that clarification. snowy night. So, you know, anything can happen. >> There's no plan to officially adopt this. This is not going to be district policy. >> This is really just a consensus document. We all agree to operate on these principles. >> So, this is fluid, right? I mean, we can make these changes now, but as things come up next month or the month after, >> we can revise as we go. >> CCed on emails, too. Whoever it is at the time. I don't know if this is appropriate for this document. I don't I haven't read it the entire >> I guess if laws it's not
>> probably depends on the situation >> on the content. Oh yeah, obviously if it's like executive then like no >> if it doesn't pertain a particular if it's not confidential >> or >> is there guidance surrounding that? >> Not that I disagree. I'm just wasn't sure. >> In the past there's just been some emails that like we haven't gotten and then I've gotten them eventually but it's like >> they're supposed to be getting anything we get that's not >> how is that fared out? Like if it's a parent sends it to the board and it isn't it's confidential. Does that >> Well, that wouldn't go. I don't think that >> we're not we're not on the the board like we're not in the board like group email. >> Okay. >> Email, >> right? It would
just be you manually added to the email. So, you know, like if >> if Craig is sending something with general information, >> it would be generalized emails like if parent email that would be confidential, right? But like um upcoming activities or um general discussion items and things like that. >> Anything that doesn't fall under executive obviously anything from a parent's going to fall under executive generally if it has personal information. >> But I guess then who makes a decision to send that? >> I think that's Craig. >> What? Sorry. >> Craig. >> Me probably. >> Okay. Yeah. >> Because if he screws up it's his problem. >> Yeah. [laughter] >> Well, you're putting him under the gun tonight. So >> turn off the road. >> Hey, it's what I signed up for. I'm all right.
Big bag. Will you hold it for >> Exactly. >> But again, none of this really, this is just going forward because the communication's working right now very well. Yeah. So it's just >> to have a working document for future boards as well. So >> I think it sets good expectations for both sides. So that's very good. All right. Well, Superintendent Chandler, I guess we'll turn to you next time. >> All right. So, uh, we are heading in, well, we're we're very much into the our winter concert season. So, I just wanted to, uh, give a shout out to all of our, uh, music students and music staff. They're doing a fantastic job. uh I've had the chance to be at a few performances and um you know it's really more than just about the musical
skill, but it's about those durable skills of teamwork and collaboration and uh creating something together. Uh so that's been really nice to see. I would encourage everybody to go to uh all of the upcoming concerts. There's still several more next week. Um >> yeah, sure. >> I want to give a shout out to Owen. I know I said kudos to you before, but I want to give a shout out to Owen and his uh classmates who made a great public service announcement video. If none of you have been to a recent concert, uh it was quite enjoyable. >> It teaches all the adults to behave like adults. Um I also witnessed some other people in the crowd then policing their family members when they saw them doing things that they were told not to in
the video. It was well put together. It was very well thought out. And the acting was just perfect. [laughter] Just perfect. Um, it it honestly though it was very entertaining. It really I think captivates the audience to actually get the message across as opposed to just like a please turn off your cell phones reminder that we usually get. I I think it was great. I don't know whose idea it was, but you guys really you did an excellent job. So, thank you for that. >> Thank you. >> I will also share that our uh winter athletic season is in full swing at this point as well. So, uh look forward to getting to see all of our teams uh whether it be on the court or in the pool, on the mat, at the lanes.
Uh we have a lot going on. Um as you all know, we did have our first snow day of the season recently. Uh so I'm pleased to share that I believe our communication tools for communicating that out to everyone worked quite well. I want to give a shout out to uh Amy uh K Crewwell and Bill Shramm and especially Michelle Ki uh for their work with me in making sure that uh you know one we made the right determination and then two that uh our communication was efficient in that regard. Um on that same note, the district will be conducting a test of our parent square alert system tomorrow at noon. Uh so I just want to make people aware of that. It's an important opportunity to make sure that everyone is connected and receiving
the emergency notifications. Uh so please look for that test message tomorrow and contact our offices if you don't receive it. Um and then lastly, uh I do have a couple matters that require a little bit of board discussion and some d uh direction for me this evening. Uh we've received a facilities naming request per our brand new policy. Uh, so our our policy indicates that we should establish an ad hoc committee. So I just need a little guidance from the board. I'm happy to put that together as to some suggestions as to maybe not specific people, but what roles of of people should be included. Um and then secondly, I would like the board to consider uh in policy committee, we've talked a little bit about our code of conduct policy and uh we need
to decide whether we would like to update our code for the entire code to be in policy or for the code itself to be maintained as a separate document. Um and that is really it for me. >> Point of order, Mr. Board President. >> Two points of order actually. >> You got them. First one, I'd love to have those conversations, Miss Chandler. Let's talk about if we can do them in policy, that'd be great when we get to the policy part because they're both policy related. The second point of order just to go back a second because I know they're here this evening. We informational items, we skipped um we usually don't cover it, but I know they are here. So, we have a student teacher that's going to be coming to us, Alana from
the University of Albony, uh with Mr. Hilker at our elementary school, and they're both here this evening. So, I just wanted to point out and welcome her and hope she has a success successful time with us and thank you to Mr. Hilker for taking her. [laughter] >> Appreciate. >> Thank you. [applause] >> Those are my two point orders. [laughter] [snorts] >> Rules, buddy. >> Okay. I mean, so >> I mean, we can get some general thoughts now regarding the two points and then send it back to policy, but we can talk about it. >> I was just holding it to policy so that Miss Winkler and Mr. Bone could do their reports and then we can talk about it. >> He's talking about the policy portion of our agenda, not back to policy committee. >>
Yeah. Talking about in >> Well, you want to talk about these two items >> when we get to the policy part of this agenda. [clears throat] >> No, no, no. This agenda. >> Very good. >> Yes. >> All right. [clears throat] Anything else? >> Nope. That's all. Thank you, >> Jean. Um just quickly, we had last week we had our first of three half day PD days. Um we have continued a partnership with the center for autism and related disabilities and they did some training with our TAs and BAS. My thanks to um Kate T-Bolt for helping coordinate that for us. Um, we are continuing our work around building understanding of the commissioner's regulations for ENL students for English language learners. Um, so we had some training for our elementary staff and our secondary scheduling
um for students uh with Dr. Sarah Chaffy, sorry. Um and then finally we had um our continued partnership with Alyssa Sabatino around tier one instructional practices and she worked specifically with our high school social studies department. So there was other uh department work happening but I just wanted to update you because those some of those items um were contracts that were approved through the board. So thanks for that. Uh we have our next board of ed CNI meeting tomorrow afternoon and it will be a middle school focus. So, we'll be talking about academic performance, uh, some data discussions. We're going to return to the discussion around honors for eighth grade, ELA, and social studies, and discuss any, uh, budget implications for some of the things that we're noticing that we might need there. So, you're
welcome to join us. That's it. >> Anything for Jean? >> All right. Thanks, Jean. Jesse, >> I don't have anything tonight. Uh, I think you're going to hear from me a lot in the next couple months. So, I'll give you a break tonight. Uh, but I am hoping for any questions if anybody >> never not had anything. >> Yeah, I know. I'll give you a break. I'll give you a break tonight. [snorts] >> Sure. >> Operations team getting the donation of the mats taken care of this week. The National Guard was extremely appreciative and gave some challenge coins out to those who helped make that happen. and they send their thanks and they will be put to good use. >> Nice. >> Those are wrestling mats. >> The wrestling mats are going to be used
for combives for Air Force training. >> Very nice. >> Great. All right. Uh Owen Bea, is there anything for either of you to report on tonight? >> Um I would just like to say that I can really tell that the ENL program has actually gotten a lot better compared to last year. So I just like to thank whoever takes care of that. Uh um like I know someone on the swim team actually uh is Chinese and last year was really struggling. It was really hard to communicate with him, but I've seen him. He's walking with uh I don't know the name of the whoever he's walking with, but he he's clearly someone helping him like speak Chinese. So I just like or speak English for that matter. So I just like to point that out.
Um but yeah, I don't really have anything. And this is not the where I should bring up like budget related things, right? It's or should I right now? Uh, so I would just like to say that I really believe that all the students need AC in this and I and I would like to address the one argument I hear the most, which is that I mean in most of June, July, and August, no one's using this building. Um, but I'd also like to say that the end of the year and the beginning of the year are where it's the hottest are the most important years in any school year. like we're taking like AP exams, finals, uh all that in the end of the year. And the beginning of the year is when you're getting
like used to like re getting used to how to go to school because you're after you're out of school for almost two months or almost three months. Uh so yeah, that's just my point. I would just like to make you guys aware of that. >> Um >> if anyone has any like things to add, >> where are we actually Jesse in that discussion? because we are that is a it'll be coming your way >> point of contention right so yeah they're they're they're looking into it okay obviously >> we're gathering our final information to be able to present to you guys regarding we're trying we're going to get the whole project >> here we'll have our construction manager our architect uh fiscal advisor so if uh and we'll present the total package to you guys
so you have all the information in front of you >> so next capital project like >> okay >> super okay >> so today we had our first lockown drill. And um when our teacher was going over the like instructions and stuff to go through it, one of the girls in my class actually pointed out something that I probably should have thought about, but I kind of forgot. Um she pointed out that in case of an actual lockdown emergency um and somehow you get stuck inside of the bathrooms, especially the girl bathroom, they both upstairs and downstairs have these really big gaps that um I feel like aren't really supposed to be there. Um and it's a safety hazard in case of an emergency and just really not. Um, and she was talking about it and
honestly that brought up a really good point and I was like I should probably bring that up today to see if maybe there could be something that we can do about that. Um, and also there has been this horrendous smell in the upstairs and downstairs bathroom. Some like the teacher said that it was like a sewage issue, but I have no clue. But it was getting really hard for the kids that you know had to go to the bathroom. They had to go to the nurse um to use it. Um, but the smell was horrible. There still is actually like sometimes like a day it will happen and someday like it won't and then one day it's just this absolute horrendous smell. Um so I wanted to bring that up and I really didn't know
if that was a sewage issue or what >> was that? >> We will look into both of those things. >> Can I bring that up a little bit? Actually can I >> piggyback off of that? So I happened to be in the building Tuesday I think one of the days this week for sports association and I noticed very horrific odor. Yeah, I wasn't sure it was just me, so I didn't say much. And I was running around. These guys were busy. No, not not just me that way. No, [laughter] >> whether I just noticed the smell that way. Sorry. I'm really stepping into it tonight, [laughter] aren't I? So, but it actually that what went in my head for those who have been around here for a while, we had an actual serious issue. Well,
we've had a lot of sewage issues over the years, backups in our pipes. Um when we've had a uh even the last five years we've had had a lot of work done on our pipes to get them cleaned out because kids sticking vapes down there and all kinds of things. Uh but we had a bigger problem and that's the smell that I first smell and again I didn't bring up to anybody because I wanted to see if I came back if I smelled it again. It was just that day. We had a big problem and you're going to laugh again. We had a big yeast infection in our basement. Okay. Uh the the underneath the school it was a big issue. We actually went we sent home several times about 10 15 years ago maybe.
Uh the school was emptied multiple times because we used to have a system a steam system in the building and that would keep everything in those uh if anybody knows there's things underneath for plumbing is up underneath our building where you can walk and that kept it very dry down there. When we switched to hydronics that now is all wet and a lot of times that glycol that is in our system spills which is basically sugar and then that soil had yeast in it and they were just having a blast and this and it became very people were getting sick a whole bit. So, we had a whole system put in down there. I don't know if you even been down there, Superintendent Chandler. A big whole system. The cheapest way we could do it
rather than taking everything out, it's a big plastic barrier that goes up the walls and on the floors. It's been a long time. Now, there's a possibility if some of that's back and some of that plastic has come off. I never go down there. Custodians might know better, but I would raise that because we Yes, we have sewer, but it smelled to me like the yeast problem we used to have. >> It was horrible. Oh my god. I was really sick when I came back to school and I had to use the bathroom. And I go in there and I swear to you, I actually felt so nauseous. I was like, "What is this smell?" And I was looking around. I was like, "Do you guys actually smell that?" And we all had to like
physically put our hands on our nose to say, "This is too much." And then we all had to go to the nurse and wait like 10 minutes in line. And it was just this horrible thing. I mean, I I don't really go to the bathroom much. Um, but when I do, it's like an emergency. And with that smell there, like you can smell it in the hallways. >> So, so that's the reason I bring the use backpack because, you know, it could be the other one. But I noticed it coming down in the building going straight down by the girls bathroom and there's a uh it's a big [clears throat] grate there that lets you down into the basement and that's where it caught the smell uh initially and that's why I think it might
be more. It could still could be either one of those to be honest with you, but >> but definitely something we should get checked into. Have Mr. Sham, >> we will certainly look into it. >> I was the traps that were backed up. and like the it was like the smell like the switch smell like backdrafted back up through the the pipes. It's like in the boys swimming locker room it's also really bad. >> But yeah. >> Okay. >> I concur with you both. Good call. >> So I will say that uh Mr. Sham is aware of it. >> Um he has need coming I believe he said Monday or sooner than that to test it out and then also a contractor to come in and see if we can figure out exactly what the
issue is. >> Thank you. We can give you an update on it. >> Yeah, please. >> Thanks. Ha. [snorts] >> Of course. >> All right. Any new business items this evening? >> Mel, >> um I have been approached by a couple of parents who said that they would really like um an evaluation to be done of drop off and pickup at the middle school and high school. >> Okay. that there [clears throat] is a lot of um backup particularly on Fridays when everybody's being let out at the same time that the concern is that the parents cars end up on the grass and all the way out to 9W and then the students can't get out of their parking lot at all. >> I can attest. >> Um so we can do that. We did
it recently for elementary. So >> that's what Jesse said. So if if we could do an evaluation on that, that would be fantastic. >> That evaluation of information could be shared with the large community of some protocols surrounding drop off and pick up because there's some different opinions on how that should be managed by different parents. >> Yeah, just to piggyback on that, I mean, this is just personal observations, but >> at the middle school drop off in the morning, um there needs to be some rules. >> Yeah, that's what I mean. Uh like for example, that's one lane, >> right? So I've observed parents while I'm waiting in lane drive up beside me and drop their kids off and the kids then cross the traffic coming through the drop off lane. >> That's a
pass through lane on the right hand side. It's not a two-lane drop off, >> right? >> Um it's a dangerous situation where you have kids weaving between cars that are dropping off. Many time parents are looking behind to make sure their kids are clear before they move. And if there's someone in front of that car, could not be a good situation. So maybe some signage or maybe just something out to >> to go along with the parents don't pull up far enough. >> So it's a long time. >> Yes, >> you can pull way up, >> right? I mean the need did a really good job um reviewing the elementary schools. They met with both principles and they came to different drop off and pickup times and gave us a pretty good analysis and we're
currently implementing those suggestions now. So that's >> so we do the same thing. >> Great. Okay, thank you. >> Um, this is kind of premature. Um, 2028 the state is going to replace the bridge over on 396 over on Bridge Street. I don't know if you were on an email train, but I'll send it to you. >> That was not >> uh not the one. It's the one over. >> That one's probably never happening. >> Yeah, it is. >> We're not working on that. >> That one's happen. So D before you finish, you do your >> zero. >> So [clears throat] the summer of spring of 2028, they're going to close that bridge down for traffic. All of the trucks from Callahans, a lot of them are going to come this way by the campus.
So me and Mr. Dio had a a conversation about the kids leaving going out the back way. So, when we get into 2028, we're probably going to have to rearrange which way the kids leave because if there's a ton of trucks coming down the back road, we probably don't want the students going out that way. >> Think >> we have them in the front right now. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Um there's two ways that the trucks are going to exit Callahans. They can either go out uh Old Corey Road down Fair Bush or they're going to come this way behind the school and go up 9W. So, again, I know it's premature. It's a spring of 2028. >> I'll forward you the email. >> Great. Thank you. >> Um, but it's going to change
the traffic patterns around the campus. >> Yeah. >> So, >> good. >> Thanks, D. >> Just to to piggy back off to Mr. Baker because somebody just brought up the 9W work. That doesn't look like it's happening. >> It is happening. >> Yeah. I was just I know I was just in contact this past week with the state engineer that's in charge of it and it was supposed to be almost done by now but that is a it was supposed to be no in terms of the planning but the the short answer for anybody that's >> turned off everything. No, no. Let me tell you the short answer is any for anybody that's listening is it is a combined project between the state and CSX because it is a very active line that goes under
that bridge and CSX has to have flaggers to do the project for the trains that are coming by and the problem has been apparently they only have a few few of these people certified to do this around the state and they have other projects going on. So until those two can get their communication straight between the state and CSX, it is sort of in limbo right now until CSX can provide the the flaggers. So they >> shut down all the lanes and tear up the >> Well, I think I don't want to speak for the state because I just I can totally tell you what I say what's what's happening going forward because that does affect with the buses and everybody else. >> That's a dangerous situation. >> Yes. So the short answer that he
gave me was he sh he he laid out what the plan was and it was going to be almost done by spring. Pretty much done by spring. But right now they don't know because they have no [snorts] answer from CSX when they're going to get these flaggers. So they had everything ready to go, thought they were going to have the flaggers, don't have the flaggers. So we are all are just in a holding pattern for some time on that project. >> So to take that a bit further, a flagger is a CSX employee certified with a radio. So anytime any train leaves that southern route, they have to stop working. >> Yeah. >> So they say everybody away from the tracks, the train goes south or east. When the train clears, everybody go back to
work. Mhm. And that's all >> on a bridge that's not on the railroad system. >> It's on the bridge. >> It's when it goes over that goes over the >> top of the railroad tracks. >> That's why it has to be replaced. It's being replaced because >> literally never happening. >> It's going to be a process. >> It's going to be some time. >> Yeah. It just I mean [snorts] business obviously, but it puzzles me that they tore up the roadway and closed it down. >> Well, they thought they were going to finish it, I think. But it I think it does affect us because we have a lot of buses and people all our staff comes that way. New drivers driving through that. everybody. >> I I spoke to the guy and I said,
"Repave it and open it back up." And the guy basically laughed at me and I said, "Okay, this conversation's over. >> But don't go up that way. >> Don't go up that way during a snowstorm because if a snow >> there's literally no way to get to >> There's not enough room. >> If a state truck's coming the other way." >> Mhm. >> Stuck. >> But there is no way for me to get to this location without 9W. >> I guess I could take I guess I could. That'll add like 20 minutes to my ride. old Ravina Road. Yeah, the back way. >> I can't get over Rava Road. >> Not without going over that. This is not important. Sorry. >> Oh, yeah. You're right. It's wrong side. You're right. You're right. >> Anyway. >>
Okay. >> Moving on. >> All right. >> Any other new business? >> All right. Uh, one item that we're just tracking on the old business. We'll look forward for the athletic code of conduct review and any updates to that. >> Getting closer. >> Uh, okay. Uh let's go into the policy topic then Matt. >> Okay. So we did have a policy meeting uh this past couple weeks ago. You have five policies down there for first read. Uh 13.1 and which is social media for those watching. 13.5 which are artificial intelligence. We have not had a social media one but that's in it's one that you should take a good look at. Um it has a lot going on in there. It's pretty comprehensive for students, for staff, for everybody. So please take a really good
look at that before we look at it again. 135. We have had an AI policy previously, but this is completely revamped version. So, please take a look at that. The previous AI policy had was this one we generically put in to have something, but Mr. uh Chandler did a lot of work on what we need in our district and what has to be done. So, this is a um an entirely different policy than we had previously and has very specific items in it. So, please take a really good look at those two. the three in between. Um, uh, Mr. um, Benati brought up an issue to me on 13.4, uh, which we'll look into. And he also raised that 132 and 134 maybe we had gotten rid of before. So, we'll double check that, but
those those were not changed at all. They were just ones that were putting back in um, you know, as we switch from the old manual to the new manual. So, we'll have something an answer for that by the time we bring this up again. Um, but please look at 131 and 135. There is no meeting in so Miss Stark can hear this too. We've canceled December's meeting >> and so we won't meet again for policy until January. >> Okay. And then >> thank you. >> Then we have two other things. Yes. >> Now's the time to bring up >> so code of conduct. Um, the policy we have list code of conduct. Uh, Mr. Chandler, check into it. The reality says that you're in our code of conduct policy. you're supposed to list the entire
code. Um, so NISBA's sample policy, for example, has 62 pages. So I have on the mindset and we've talked it out, um, that even though it's supposed to be in there, it probably be better to leave the actual code out of the policy and just reference that it's available on our website because part of part of the the the law that would be on there says that it has to be posted on our website. And we have talked in within policy about making sure that when you go to the the board of ed part of the um the website that there'd be a very clear link that says click here to get the policy old policy and the new policy because there's still not one combined one yet. So if you don't find an old
you go to new. Um but that's the discussion you want to have is unless the board feels differently >> is the the code of conduct is a is a series of policies, right? >> The code of conduct is just one policy. It's one policy but >> but the manual so you look I look at it this way it's a manual and it's on our website and everything it's a very long document that lists about our philosophies lists every penalty list 10 all anything that could deal with conduct you know school grounds athletics all that kind of stuff or at least other fields so it's not that I mean is supposed to be in there Mr. channel looked at it in other districts and said it's sort of 50/50. I think you said, right? >> It's
about 50/50 split. So, yeah, letter of the law, >> the code of conduct itself is policy. So, it's supposed to be policy. >> About half the diff districts have a code of conduct policy that references the code of conduct and indicates when it should be reviewed, what elements must include. The code of conduct lives separately. That's how ours is currently. and then the other districts and would be similar to NISPA's sample policy whereas Matt indicated the policy itself is 60ome pages because it is the actual code of conduct. >> So it's a if you leave it the way it is it's still a policy but the manual exists separately. >> Correct. >> So it's still a policy. >> Yeah. So it's just a matter of how we organize it and present it to the public.
>> Yes. I think it'd be easier just one little thing and you can reference it. >> Yeah. >> Separately. That was my mind. >> Whatever the easiest way for families to find it, >> right, >> would be best because the code of conduct is something that families do reference whereas a lot of board policies >> and you and yeah, to be clear, you'd still have because of the the the way the law reads, you'd still have the manual aspect of it, the the step by step, what happens if you get in trouble and all that that still has to be posted on a website, >> right? So I it seems duplicitous to put it you know duplicative to put it into the actual policy and then as people go through the policy manual when they
might be looking the whole manual for something else >> got 62 pages of one thing that's going to cause confusion that's my two cents on >> so any update so every updates on that would go through a policy committee >> correct >> okay >> has to >> the only question I had is and we were trying to do in the past but it became the definitions are not necessarily in the code of conduct for like definition of harassment and things like that. Some >> Yeah, they are. >> They are. They're all there. They're there, >> but we added them. >> Absolutely. >> On the on the front page on the website. >> They're in the document on the website. Yeah. >> Oh, all right. Then forget it. I missed it. >> Yes. >> All right.
Cool. >> That's an important part of it. >> So then the same thing would hold true to the athletic conduct. >> When we get to that, Sure. >> We get It's actually a But it's actually a policy. >> Yes. And it can exist the document can exist separately. >> Yes. As as Mr. Chandler said, what would be in the in the actual board of ed policy manual, >> the big thing would just say the things that the law says you have to have in it. >> Okay. Because the law requires you to have certain definitions, certain postings and all that would leave that in the full entire board of ed policy manual. But the page by page punishments and all that kind of stuff or consequences yet yada yada would be available posted on the
website >> and it's usually referenced in our calendar too the school calendar that goes out usually references as well. >> So is is there any anybody disagree with that or want to change that? >> Whatever is the easiest way to do it. >> That works for me. >> Okay. >> What's the second one? Mr. Chandler got a second one. >> Hawk for naming facilities. >> Yeah. Yeah. So really that one is we we have one >> um I'm expecting a second one and a third one that will be coming in um right >> as soon as I can get my act together. Yeah. >> And there'll be a third one coming as well that I notified on. So we have to have an ad hoc committee. I hadn't really thought much about it, but who
do we want to have on that ad hoc committee? Yep. And we have to sort of I probably create one tonight or decide on it tonight so we could get it started in January maybe. >> Or just give me some direction so I can reach out to some people and and put one together and I can send it to you in an update as to >> who we've got. want to represent on it. >> Well, that's the whole thing. So, like I mean I think there should be probably a board member on it even though it comes back to us. >> Um you could want somebody from athletics. Um you know could be the AD, it could be coach or I mean I guess I hadn't really thought too much about it. I was asking
this group who would you want to have on that committee? How big do we even want? >> Well, you don't want it to be huge obviously and then so I guess we figure out a number and then >> Yeah. Do you want community person? I mean like five people. going to say I I would I would think for sure somebody important to be on it would be somebody with historical reference you know >> there's so my thought on that one I've thought a lot about that part of it because I I know that the names in my head that would come up but in some cases those are the people whose names were coming up for offering and you know it's also I I guess my point is even though it's for naming business it
could be anybody but I don't want it to be um necessarily all like athletic people let's say for example Right. >> Well, the one I'm bringing isn't >> Yeah. No, that's what I'm saying. >> An athletic person. So, yeah. >> So, I I'm going to suggest right now I'll just put out five people. Five person ad hoc committee because get us moving along here. >> So, I'll do some work on that. Okay. >> And uh >> decide who you Yeah. >> Yeah. I'll put it in an update and >> I'd say >> take any feedback people have. >> First two I'll give you right now would be a board member and and athletic director. Yep. Sorry, Mr. >> Zack. [laughter] That's off the bat. And after that, I don't know. >> Facilities. Does it make
sense? >> Could be. Yeah. >> Yeah. >> At least somewhat necessary in the like depending on what type of, you know, naming it is and how feasible that may be. They're going to need to have some level of >> So, the ad hoc committee is going to review these, vet them, and make a recommendation to the board. >> Correct. >> Yeah. The board does the action. >> So, that that's that gives me enough direction to be able to put it together. >> Okay. Matt, tell me if I'm crazy, but isn't the historical society right in like would that be an appropriate venue to ask for people who might be that way? It would be somebody who might necessarily not be named or tied with a school but still have history in the town. >> Could
be. Yeah, >> maybe. >> No right or wrong. Yeah, I think better to write it down. >> Yeah. somebody who has some context of who is, you know, important and made a impact here. So, >> we could easily find that information out if it's if it's somebody that's from a long time ago. >> Yeah. Yeah. Joe does it. Yeah. >> Good. Those those answer my questions. No, I don't think so because we got to go back now that we have this answered. Yeah. >> Okay. >> All right. We're good with that. >> All right. As far as upcoming activities, we have a break coming up, which I'm sure students and teachers alike are looking forward to eagerly. >> A long break. >> It is a long break. You have two weeks this time. >> 16
days. >> I used to love those years. Perfect timing this year. Does anyone else have >> anything for this evening? >> Nope. >> No. >> And I'll ask for a motion to adjourn. [laughter] >> Pete's motion to adjurnn. >> Second. Dan. All in favor? I >> something we can always count on you.
