[Music] the csu contract was corrected for a typo um we also added an item which was the header obviously wyoming county the project tech start agreement and the collaborative agreement and we added a [Music] yeah and janet is here so we can remove the um all right then we need a motion to approve the agenda with uh changes second motion right now second right here all in favor aye authority obscene motion i should remember them through the left um brad and sewer all excuse me okay we'll move on to item three which is our presentation i think it is well it was working a minute ago i'm just let me know i'll advance it i just moved it it was working but what's going on i'll admit hi everyone it's been a little while since
i've seen you i hope you guys are all enjoying the summer so i'm going to give you guys an update on the active construction phases and kind of where everything stands here today we'll start with phase three where we have prospect elementary which is currently in active construction and then phase 3.4 which is at the tail end of pre-construction so for phase 3.3 we started construction back at the end of june just as all the kids were let out about our school we've recently completed a couple scheduled milestones one with the addition foundations they've been completed poured out and we as you can see by the picture second from the top on the left hand side there also been waterproof and we started backfilling the foundations we've also turned over the classroom conversion where we
took two smaller classrooms made in one larger classroom and added a bathroom to it we turned that over to the district last friday so rich and the custodial staff are waxing the floor there to get the teacher into our classroom later later this week some upcoming milestones that we have are turning over the teachers break area this friday and as well as finishing up the the new bathrooms and getting those available for you starting next week the roof replacement is scheduled to be complete by the end of this month we're looking at how to schedule there they're actually starting to demobilize tomorrow and hoping to be off the roof by the end of this week structural steel is scheduled to start just after labor day for the edition with it being the structure being completed
by the end of the month and time to start exterior wall before the start of october and then just snapshot of where we stand for overall substantial completion days for the project 831 22 for the roof replacement the addition schedule will be completed july 31st of 2023 and the overall project substantially complete and that'll do the finishes out in the hallway in front of the new edition by 8 25 just a couple of pictures here before we move to the next slide so top left is completed roof section that's been replaced top right is a new case work in the teachers brake area the bottom right is the new bathroom finishes in the classroom 116. bottom left is the finishes in one of the teachers break areas and the middle picture there is the new
floor in the classroom conversion area for phase 3.4 currently the the project's being reviewed by sed and we're scheduled to have our bid period between the month of october and november with a break ground date of just after the new year 1 3 20 23 the native american services renovations which will be taken over the current district office area won't isn't scheduled to happen until school gets out at the end of this calendar school year substantial completion for the project is the end of february 2024 with the district movement in march 2024 and then project closeout will be wrapped up by june of 2024. so phase four which is the project phase that was just approved by the the may vote um it's also currently in pre-construction and some of the milestone schedule items that
we're looking at for this overall project is the design period from that vote to approve the project in may through june of 2023 sce review will be from june 23 through october of 2023 um that approval needs to happen after september 11th of 2023 for aid to renew and help fund that project the big period will be from october to november of 2023 with construction starting the end of november 2023 and then wrapping up in august of 2025. closeout will be from september through december of 2025. does anybody have any questions on where we stand with the current capital projects so all right thanks for your time everybody thank you thank you so much next time we'll learn through our recommendations schoology perfect so um thank you again julian um mrs schnuffer our uh technology
coach will be presenting to us and schoology which is the upgrade essentially for our learning management hi how are you i'm glad to be here tonight so like dr buehler said we are going to launch our second learning management system since i have been here in six years um for those of you who do not know me um i have a little introduction of myself somebody told me a little bit of humor is always good to settle the nerves um i've been in education for 23 years this has been my sixth year here the schoology is my third uh learning management system i helped in my previous district with google classroom we launched powerschool learning in the summer of 2018 and last fall we were told that it was going to be decommissioned as of
september of 2022 so um this is my third time i'm hoping to charm and i don't have to launch another learning management system anytime soon it's a great deal of work um i also have a lot of experience with standards-based grading integrating technology into the classrooms and i'm also a parent between boys in the district who you may have seen present once or twice on steam and recently we've moved into the district and i now have a five-minute commute instead of an hour commute and they're loving our space here so a little bit about schoology as i said last fall by chance we were notified that learning was going to be going away learning also known as class pages had been a learning management system that took us through the pandomic um it was a
good system where they had a lot of limitations so powerschool had purchased schoology a couple years prior and had been encouraging everybody to switch over but now it wasn't a choice anymore we had to make some decisions um without with dr wheeler we did look at on some other learning management systems but being that schoology is a college student company and it integrates beautifully with our student information system which is clear that we should go with schoology levi also helped me look at some different systems and there's a lot of different speaking systems but school did you run out with the ease of the teachers and students being able to use it and that it was integrated with powerschool so some of the benefits our schoology accounts will be created by a nightly state so
once a student becomes active in power school overnight they'll have their schoology account it integrates with so many of our web resources ixl near pod discovery education canva caming so many things work super easy in the schoology interface there's some really awesome assignment options um one of them is the fact that a teacher can create a shared document in an assignment in word online powerpoint online excel online and it becomes a true learning experience for the students so as a student is working on the document the teacher can also collaborate right on the document within schoology um so that was a really nice feature to be able to have there's some great messaging and notifications that happen in schoology and they're all housed in the schoology interface under the envelope and the bell but teachers
parents and students can also choose which notifications would come to their office 365 email so if they want to get those notifications and email we can teachers have something in the schoology that we did not have in learning an easy way to share resources so if i'm a teacher and i build a lesson in schoology i can send it to a spot called resources in schoology which is like a file cabinet and i can share it with my colleagues and then they can pull it down into their class at the resource as they so choose we've already started using this in summer trainings and it's been a real benefit to a lot of teachers there's a ton of public resources available schoology has been around for a very long time there are a lot of
school districts that use schoology and there's a lot of teachers that actually create resources and share them publicly with other teachers that can pull them into their own schoology accounts edit them and use them in their so we have a lot of great resources available to us there's a very easy to use parent portal schoology app for iphones ipads um android devices here's another really great thing there's an advisor dashboard so i want to use the example of our family liaison in the past we had to have teachers add the family liaisons to ad reports now we can get the family liaisons and the advisor dashboard the guidance counselors the tutors we can assign specific students in this advisor dashboard to those specific people they can go in and look up a student they can
see their grades their attendance and any coursework that they have been assigned as a as like a viewer they can't do anything they can only view so that'll be a great help to help increase transparency between our family liaisons tutors guidance counselors and the classroom teachers to be able to assist students to have a better experience our gradebook and attendance are integrated into each course attendance and assignment creation and grades will all be performed in schoology so that teachers do not have to bounce out of schoology to go someplace else to take attendance or to create grades and as you can see from the image on the screen it has a really clean folder based look so many things integrate like youtube our onedrive resources all kinds of different video services and a lot of
our web resources and teachers can put them right into folders for students to easily access so a little bit about the parent portal basically what's going to happen is parents will create a schoology account they'll be given a code with their students little individual code on it and they will hook their student up and they'll be able to go in and access their students as a viewer they can attach as many students as needed that same code can work for multiple tariffs so we've got a great plan we're going to offer all parents to set up prayer for accounts both seneca and the high school have been given a sheet that looks very much like what you see on your screen it's exactly the same um individualized to each student so the student name is
up in the left-hand corner the student's code will be right here where you see that on yellow this 12-digit code will be mailed home we've individualized those for all students and they're being mailed home we've also made a second copy that are going to be distributed to teachers so on the welcome picnics especially at seneca the tea the parents come into the teacher's room they'll have a second copy to be able to encourage the parents to be uh slogging into schoology um i've also sent out the student codes to the liaisons so that they have the code so if they're in homes working with parents that they would have this direction sheet as well as the student codes and they can get the parents hooked up um i'm going to be at the seneca high
school welcome back picnic in the library so if parents do need help they can come in and visit me in person that night levi and i our contact information is on the letters as well as on the website so that parents can call and get one-on-one help if they need help and i believe levi is going to be doing a robo-call out to parents to let them know about the portal and how to access okay such a busy summer i've been here since june training teachers first after school and then in half day and full day trainings um in june we have one hour intros because i find the more times the teacher sees this that more comfortable that they become using the tool so we had some one hour after school trainings where we
really went in and looked at all the tools and how they function so we did those about six times over the summer and right now we're into integrating resources where student teachers can learn all the different resources that are integrated into schoology how to put them into their lessons and access for students tomorrow we will start the grading session so we will be teaching teachers how to use the gradebook how to create assignments how to take attendance um and those are three hour sessions um tomorrow and then there's two on monday and then there will be more after school offerings in september as well as i'll be participating in team and department meetings i have had sessions with the principals over the summer the principals each have a schoology course that their faculty is going
to be attached to that they can put faculty information out right in schoology and right now we have about 90 percent of all of our teaching staff trained at some level in schoology okay for students mostly at the high school i will be pushing in to eighth grade technology classes 9th grade history classes 10th grade history classes and 11th grade english classes as of now i have those all scheduled i'll be going in and introducing the high school classes to schoology how to use it with the teacher presence so that we can get the kids all on a level playing field prospect and computer lab um we'll be going over schoology and we'll be going into individual classes as requested and most of the seneca um teachers have been very thoroughly trained to be able
to introduce to their own students um all the different pieces of schoology because they will be using it as if they want okay so i wanted to just show you real quick what a live schoology instance you have schoology accounts by the way um so if you ever want to use schoology we can teach you how to use it for board purposes but um levi's gonna pop on the schoology so basically you'll see um the warrior head will actually take us back to our home page which has a recent activity much like a facebook feed so as teachers are posting updates in their courses they'll be almost like a facebook feed for a recent activity our course dashboard um you'll be able to see students will be able to see overdue assignments as well as
upcoming calendar events and assignments in there at the top you'll see there's courses that contains grading and attendance groups which are really used for like you could use it for an after school sport or club basically to share resources and communicate the resources piece is our little file cabinet tools is something levi and i have and that's where we go to do all the administration of schoology and that's also where the advisor dashboard will be found for our liaisons there's a search tool so you can type in if you type in implicit bias you can see anything that has to do with implicit bias in there um the app tool next is not used for teachers that's where i go to integrate all the resources there's a really nice calendar feature that will pull out
assignments and events from courses and groups yep look at all the things that we have in there already the nice part about it is people can choose what calendars what courses or groups they would like to populate in here they can just check box they can actually change the color of the event to suit their needs the envelope is a place where messages will come in and messages can go out into individual people um in every course and group the owner of the courser group has the ability to send out a mass email message to all the students or all the parents or all the students and parents together the bell is our notification area so anytime a teacher gets an assignment submitted or a student gets an assignment they get a notification in the
bell and if you scroll all the way down and show view all all notifications are ordered in chronological order so if a teacher happens to miss something they can go back and find the date and say oh yeah susie you did turn that assignment and i'll get that graded for you right away because sometimes we miss things under the name in the corner if you have students in the district you'll be able to switch to different students parents will look exactly like this they'll say their name in the top corner when they switch they'll be able to switch the students that they have connected to their parent account and something super new that i'm super excited about is called the app switcher so up in the top right hand corner the app switcher allows our
teachers to be able to switch into performance matters which is our electronic testing tool and data collection back into schoology learning and into the actual powerschool student information system without having to navigate back out and go into class link and find another app they can switch um there's a few other powerschool products that will soon be added to this app switcher including naviance which are career and counseling app that we use in the high school on the roadmap they must be in there and the teachers will be able to switch right into that so it's really cool do you want to go and show me by a student go into one of your students so what a parent would see when they would come in to see their um their student they'll see that they're
viewing the student name um basically they have a very slimmed down um view here soon after grade report they'll be attendance so they'll be able to drill and see their students attendance their students grades and any courses or groups that their student is a member of they will have a view only access of that course or group so that they can stay in the know of what's happening here at school and the goal is to really be transparent and have parents be part of our school community do you have any questions for me i know that was kind of fast yeah i think i think levi and i are both super happy with um the setup it was a really great setup um from schoology it was very clean there was a few bumps in
the road but um dr buehler tell you i'm a tiger when it comes to getting things the way i want them so i have stayed on it levi has stayed on a lot of the assist connection pieces um and we are almost there i would say we're about 99 all set and we have a couple little bumps to finish here the next week and get things all perfect and by september 6 when we're all together with the kids everything should be all set and ready to go okay well thank you very much for letting me present today thank you i think it's important to recognize the amount of work that goes into a transition like this and without leadership and simply the hours of work she's put in behind the scenes here and in front
of the camera for that matter literally and figuratively we would not be where we are right now especially ready to go for the start of school so i wanted to express our gratitude to sue um as well as to levi for the assistance to make a great team so thank you next we're going to have our presentation for the land acknowledgement statement all right so we have members of our native american curriculum team all right um all right so land acknowledgements i'm just going to talk i guess a little bit about the history of land acknowledgement statements how we created ours and then our intended use for it so they started in about the 1970s in canada just through different educational institutions organizations that wanted to recognize you know the history of the land in
which they were standing on so kind of started really slow and then throughout these last few years i've personally seen a really big um growth in them and so naturally you have a native population that has ideas about them right there's a couple of different perspectives um one view from indigenous peoples is that you know it's a really great initial step in reconciliation and recognizing the history that occurred and then there's the other side that tends to believe it's really the very least organizations can do and there are many other tangible ways to benefit indigenous communities whether it's through scholarships different programming curriculum those kinds of things so when we were coming up with ours it started last year the conversation had started before the native a national indian education association conference and so it
was really great because i had had a lot of experience with it but some of our other members hadn't and when we got there the very first thing they did was a land acknowledgement statement so it was really great to be able to hear one and it inspired us we wanted to make sure that when we were doing it it wasn't just something that we're standing up and doing just to kind of check a box we wanted it to be authentic and to really acknowledge the history that's happened here and and of course other people want to acknowledge that when they're doing it um so that was really a big part of it we wanted to make sure that we recognized and acknowledged the really harsh parts of history but then also celebrating the intention
behind it and what the district is doing so ours we start out first really by um we wanted to include the local indigenous community that's an important part of it so while some of us were native that were creating it there's also making sure that we're sharing it with people as we went making sure that our facts were accurate making sure we had that right history and then because they'll make us an educational organization or institution we wanted to make sure that we acknowledged a very important part of history and that's the forced assimilation that occurred through boarding schools so we did that and it's all very heavy but then towards the end of it we get a little bit lighter and we really wanted to focus on the positive things that our district is
doing and continues to do there's a lot of different ways that you can benefit both native students and non-native students through education we all know that so just by having these things said to them it helps kind of open that door and have that conversation about what occurred but what we're doing so our team is a great example of what the district's doing to provide tangible benefits we're working to maintain that relationship of the district with the seneca nation and so i think that was a lot of what we were hoping to gain from it and then our intended purpose is naturally to share this to have it available when students staff and visitors are coming to the district so they can read it and consider you know where their districts are what their history
of their land may be and then additionally thanks to mr newbie here we've made it available for the different grade levels so it's not going to be this heavy language that elementary students aren't necessarily going to understand or it might just be a little bit too much but something i always say when i talk about it is even though they are young it's really important that we teach young children that they can't take things that don't belong to them so it's an important reason for sharing it and naturally our hope is that through doing a land acknowledgement statement we're empowering our indigenous students to recognize the land that we exist upon we're empowering that resiliency we're still here we still have our language we have our culture and we have an ongoing history i often
call it a living history and so i think that's really important uh as a part of our land acknowledgement statement and i think dr buehler are you going to read it all right so we're going to let dr wheeler take it away the salamanca city central school district acknowledges the homeland of the anandawaka the people of the great hill the seneca people who are keepers of the western door for the hojinhoshoni confederacy on whose ancestral and modern day land and water salamanca school district now stands this truth is told by the words spoken with the george washington belt and the two-row wampum and codified by the 1794 canandaigua treaty the 1794 treaty was signed by timothy pickering as a representative for george washington and ratified by the u.s senate as the supreme law of the
land we are mindful of our geographical proximity to thomas indian school a boarding school for native american children operated on the cataracts reservation of the seneca nation in irving new york from 1855 to 1957. we acknowledge that seneca children were removed from their homes and sent to tunisia indian boarding school in quaker new york and carlisle indian industrial school in carlisle pennsylvania which were boarding schools off territory these boarding schools implemented the federal indian policy of forced assimilation which included the prohibition and punishment for using seneca language and for sacred cultural expression we recognize this century-long trauma and cultural genocide continues to reverberate within the seneca and other hadinashoni communities we send love and acknowledgement to the survivors that reside in our community today we acknowledge that one-third of this territory was flooded by the
construction of the kinzua dam despite and in opposition to the 1794 cannondale treaty we recognize this forcefully forcibly removed seneca families from their homes and pushed them into salamanca city central school district we offer care and support for their children and grandchildren we acknowledge we are standing on the seneca territory of ohio in an area called onetigo meaning place of the hemlocks further we acknowledge that this city and school district exist through the goodwill of the sanika nation of indians and was reaffirmed by the u.s congressional acts of february 1875 and september 30th 1890 that authorized the seneca nation of indians to lease lands within the cataracts and allegheny reservations salamanca city central school district endorses the united nations declaration of the rights of indigenous peoples and strive to surpass each of the articles we
wish to strongly state our commitment to teaching the history culture and language of the ananda and beyond in a framework that acknowledges settler colonialism and its consequences to educating all of our students to understand the foundational nature and ongoing existence of subtler colonialism as a social political formation and system of thought mindful of these histories we work toward understanding acknowledgement and ultimately reconciliation the salamanca city central school district acknowledges and greatly values the diverse community members from indigenous nations their spiritual and physical relationship to this environment their right their resilience their sovereignty and their heritage we also acknowledge other members of the hadi nashoni confederacy including the tuscarora oneida cayuga onondaga and mohawk that have a connection and presence here we stand with all indigenous peoples in their staunch resolve to remain connected to this
land while we cannot undo what has been done it is the goal of the san omega city central school district to make improvements that will benefit the next seven generations of indigenous students um and then i just wanted to i did i forgot to mention um so those of us that created the land acknowledgement statements was of course the native american curriculum team um brittany jemmerson and then we also worked with the indigenous studies committee but we had a really solid group too cool perfect so moving forward um it is the intention that the land acknowledgement statement will be read um for a version of it that would be age appropriate or offending appropriate um subsequent to the greeting of the pledge of allegiance at any of our school functions and as gabrielle mentioned it
really should serve as an acknowledgment of the territory and land that we are currently on um and work toward reconciliation with the indigenous peoples of this area so i really want to thank our native american curriculum team they've put a tremendous amount of work into this moving forward as i mentioned various versions of this will be distributed to the schools and it will be uh not only an acknowledgement but an opportunity for additional learning for our students so thank you very much [Music] um i i wish i could say that but that is so far from the truth insane uh i would just like to to publicly thank my entire team um for everything they've done this summer um the business office is kind of extremely busy with all the new hires and uh getting
everything caught up there are so many grants in process right now and not only are we closing out but kids trying to write new ones and it's it's been a nightmare um so i just would like to you know publicly thank them for everything they're going through right now and um making it all happen doing what it takes to make it happen um i'd like to also let you know that um cafeteria has successfully completed her administrative review from my said central uh child nutrition services um findings and that the pos systems are being installed at prospects in seneca so hopefully we're all good this week um we are still a cep school so our students will still receive free breakfast to lunch so that's great um but they have to go through the line
so uh facilities they've got everything on the move they're moving teachers from one location to another because of construction or because there's not enough room in the building so people are being moved all over the place in addition to um you know the regular cleaning and maintenance of the buildings and waxing the floors and this place will be shiny and spotless day one um also transportation buses are all ready to roll we have plenty of drivers what we are missing is monitors so if anybody's interested in being a monitor a couple hours in the morning a couple hours in the afternoon please let us know we are very short on monitors um but the uh bus runs are being copied tomorrow and we'll be getting that tomorrow and uh other than that i sometimes i
just feel like dory from finding you know and just keep swimming and that's all i know awesome thanks does anyone have any questions for karen we'll move on to the board message so let's start at the end of that i just wanted to thank everybody coming out today um the presenters doing a very nice job on informing all of us of all the different activities you guys have planned and ongoing the uh and the other thing is this school starts right around the corner yeah it's amazing how the summer flies and a couple more board meetings we'll all be talking about how it's gonna snow that just flies through oh yeah just excited to see how all that happened and all the projects going forward and enjoy the rest of your summer yeah yeah yeah
likewise um a couple more weeks we'll be back at it and just say keep up the good work um it's been a struggle finding staff staff because i know doing the same thing myself and uh just stay with it um it's a short time right now so thank you everybody thank you very much just excited for school to start gain weight um and i didn't want to say um good work on the land acknowledgement and you're right it's just step one that's that's my my own personal view is that it's never going to be enough but it's beginning and good job on that that's it yeah it was a good job on the landing acknowledgement it was well thought out expressed very well it wasn't a nice job all the presenters did a great job
to them it's nice to hear what's going on with the school especially i don't have the luxury of having kids in the school anymore so sometimes i lose track of all the great things that we're doing um i did hear through the grapevine that we have a couple transfers that our people from other schools are bringing their kids in so that's always exciting for me to hear that uh kids that were elsewhere and want to come back to our district or they're from other districts that want to come to our school and then they become residents right so yeah you know so you started building that it's great to see what our school has going on and the people that come back for uh class reunions you know dale i know you showed off that
part for your classroom and i know i'm in your class had a class reunion this year so there were people that came here [Music] see what's going on with the school they're really impressed and they contribute to all the staff and all the hard work that everybody is putting into this district and and how you want your district to succeed so thanks to everybody i'm glad that we're going to start school here a couple more weeks and sure the kids aren't but uh the parents probably are so thank you to everybody for who you've done over the summer to get us back to it when you be here and with that alternatively well you know and we enter the final weeks before students return to school there is definitely a helpable mix of excitement and
their business throughout the district our support staff and administrative team have been extremely busy this summer preparing our buildings and our minds for the first day of school i'd like to take a moment just to remind everyone that our welcome back picnics are scheduled for next week tuesday at prospect and wednesday at 7 o'clock and high school i look forward to seeing everyone there the 30th is our first day back for our instructional staff and we have an all-day workshop for them so i'd like to invite our school board members to uh lunch that's being provided on the next tuesday the 30th between 11 and 12 from carson's barbecue so if you're available stop by and interact and join some of our staff that's returning for the first step back thank you okay next we'll
